Welcome to Pod meets Twirl, a podcast that began with Dancing with the Stars. Continued through castles, traitors, and strategic deception. And because our producers, along with many of our listeners, apparently enjoy watching two confused middle aged men struggle through wildly successful reality television, we have now arrived at a place neither of us understands. Bravo. Specifically, in the City. Now, usually these shows involve a game, a competition, a cash prize, a goal. But apparently this is different. There are no challenges, no murder mysteries, no judges, no dance scores. Just wealthy adults attending parties, drinking, dating, and keeping tabs on one another. We are Ryder Strong, a man who prefers stories with structured themes and an ending, and Will Friedle, who was told there would be some humor among the cocktails and betrayals. Join us as we enter a world of social warfare, passive aggression, luxury apartments, and confessionals delivered with the gravity of international diplomacy. This is pod meets twirled metropolitan mess. Hi, Will.
Will Friedle
Hi, Ryder.
Ryder Strong
We made it.
Will Friedle
Did we?
Ryder Strong
We made it through a season of in the City.
Will Friedle
Well, there's still the reunion.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. I have to say, I expected a little more drama. I think where this landed makes me feel like, you know what it is? It's like I went through the drive through at McDonald's and Midway Eating it. I was like, oh, this is gonna fill me up. This is gonna fill me up so good. And then you're done eating and you're like, I could get another burger.
Will Friedle
I thought you were gonna say horrible diarrhea, which is, I think, more where I was at.
Ryder Strong
What I'm saying is this show feels like a teaser. It feels like, like you're going to get sated, we're going to fill you up, and instead it just makes you hungrier. And, like, I want it. I actually, like, feel. I wanted people to, like, really go for the drama and, like, take me there. Instead, it's like, now I got to watch another season. Well, this is how these shows work.
Will Friedle
I'm curious. Maybe Maddie. And maybe Maddie would be able to know this answer, but I'm curious. It almost seems like this show was created as a spinoff of Summer House solely based on the drama of them splitting up and then him being with her, being with West. But then why would west not be on the show?
Ryder Strong
Yeah. And also plan that.
Will Friedle
But. But at the same time, it's like, yeah, I. Yeah, I agree with you 100%. I still. I don't get the point of this show. And I don't know if it's this show particularly or it's all these shows of just people sitting down at meals and getting into fights. Like, and I think that's the. And I think it might Just be this entire version of reality TV that I just don't understand.
Ryder Strong
Here's the thing. Weirdly, I've come to like these people. Really? Yes. You know, because when we started the show I was like, I was a little skeptical that I could like people. You know, I think I was judgmental. I think I was judgy of the fact that these people, I would say because of their wealth and their privilege, I would be like, why do. These aren't real life problems, you know, and, but by the end of this, I, I'm kind of like, yeah, you know, I've spent time like, basically I feel like this show is like a trailer for like a big chill style movie that I would want to watch. Does that make sense?
Will Friedle
It does.
Ryder Strong
It's like, I don't agree with actual much drama. It's, most of the drama is like a preview of like we could be, we could have a huge blowout fight and never be friends again. But we'll see you next season when we're just going to work it all, you know, because they do kind of just work stuff out. Like it's miscommunication. It spreads. It spreads. It teases you. It's like, oh, they're going to have it out. And then they kind of like, you know, because they have to admit like, yeah, I did say that and sorry I said hurt your feelings and we're going to be friends. And so I don't know, it's, I guess it's a weird, like I kind of crave like a slice of life movie version of these people and I be into that. As it is though, the show just kind of like invites you in, you get a little taste and then it's just, you know. But now I do feel like I need to keep watching.
Will Friedle
I just didn't get the appeal of the show. To me, the sitting still makes me very anxious. It makes me feel like, you know, I, I like to avoid conflict. That's one of the reasons I've talked about this before where I, I, I think I've, I've honed my, my comedy is because I know I can avoid a lot of conflict by making people laugh and doing stuff like that. So a show that's totally based around uncomfortable moments and dinners and people yelling at each other is absolutely just not for me.
Podcast Announcer
Right.
Will Friedle
So yeah, I mean, again, I, some
Ryder Strong
of the people are, are, they're all fine.
Will Friedle
They're fine. Know they're fine. It's a reality show, you know, it's, I'm not Looking for my morality to be, you know, they're not dictating my moral compass. I know exactly why I'm tuning in, so. But, yeah, but for me, it's. There's so many. I mean, we've talked about. However, it's already been announced that we're. We're doing Married at First Sight next. And I've seen that show before, and so there were other shows that when I turned them on, reality shows were way more of a breath of fresh air than something like this was to me.
Ryder Strong
Well, Married at First Sight is more of like a social experiment.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Right?
Ryder Strong
There's.
Will Friedle
Yeah, there's.
Ryder Strong
There are real stakes. This show is like determined against stakes. And I think that, that, you know, that's a. It's. It's a weirdly soothing thing. I can totally see how people, you know, I feel like I know these people kind of well enough to like, hang out with them or like, make slight judgments about, like, didn't like the way she said that. She could have phrased that better. Or he really butted in there when it wasn't, you know, like those kinds of, like, social observations. I don't know. Like, I could see why people get hooked on this crowd. Oh, I can too.
Cal Penn
Because it's.
Will Friedle
People also just crave drama.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
They love.
Ryder Strong
It's actually not drama.
T-Mobile Representative
It's.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
It's.
Will Friedle
It's like.
Ryder Strong
It's. It's melodrama maybe is the right term. It's like, right, because, you know, it's not. If it was real drama, it would be Married at First Sight. It would be Survivor even. You know, it would be a much more like this is somebody's gonna make or break their. You know, in this case, I guess there is the real drama. I would say the only true drama of this entire season is Kyle and Amanda breaking up.
Kyle MacLachlan
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Like, that is the only true life transition. That's sad, you know, and because, you know, the other big drama, which I put in quotes is, is the babies being born, you know, but like, otherwise,
Will Friedle
or maybe him finding his dad. I mean, that was. But it seemed to. Almost seemed a little manufactured for the show, though.
Ryder Strong
Sure.
Will Friedle
That's the thing where it's just kind of like, okay, you're now we're right. Because. Yeah, there's.
Ryder Strong
I mean, are there any of these. Here's what I would ask. Yeah.
Will Friedle
Are there any of these people that you could see yourself being good long term friends with?
Ryder Strong
I mean, by the end of this, I was like. I genuinely, like, I was like, you know, none of these People are that bad. Like, no. And I don't feel like I really know them. So, yeah, I could be like, I think I could be in this friend group. Like, by the end, I was like, really? I'd probably be like the Owen of the friend group. Like, I'd be the one just kind of like in the back of my mind half the time being like, can't believe these people are drinking and talking about this again, you know, But I would still be fine being there, like, because I don't think it's actually that dramatic. Like, I don't think they're.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
That.
Will Friedle
I don't fight quite a bit. I mean, they fight quite a bit. It's like, that's the thing is I just look at them and I, I again, I don't see bad human beings. I just see a group of people that I wouldn't want to hang out with.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Right.
Will Friedle
And again, having nothing to do with their moral character or any of that kind of stuff. It's just these are people that love money, love, love designer things.
Ryder Strong
They're all grave, by the way.
Will Friedle
Yeah, they're all beautiful, very good looking
Ryder Strong
people, which is so interesting. I mean, I guess my, my bigger, like, sort of overall question is like, why this? Like, why do we settle as a culture into like. Because I know that they've made reality shows following all different types of people.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Right.
Ryder Strong
But why do we consistently come back to wealthy, you know, low stakes situations where people are mostly gossiping and backstabbing? Like, that does seem to be the Bravo verse, you know, whether it's the housewives or like, we don't watch shows where, like, I don't know. I'm trying to think of an alternative example of like, you know, a group of a friend, group of like, people that are struggling with their jobs or, you know, like, we don't get like the Roseanne version. You know, if this were a sitcom, it seems like we see you do.
Will Friedle
We do the Huxtables. You know what I mean? We do, actually. And it's interesting. I would go when you're going for blue collar, I think they mask the drama of blue collar with making it about whatever job the people are doing. So, like Deadliest Catch, where. Which is still to me the greatest reality show that's ever been made where they're crab fishing, but it's still about the drama of the captain firing the greenhorn and it's all that stuff, but it's. It's wrapped up in a blue collar bow. Hey, I'm working. We're building motorcycles. We are crab fishing. We're hunting for gold.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
We're.
Will Friedle
You're still watching for the people, but you get to tell yourself you're watching because it's a world you know nothing about. And going back to what you're saying, I think Bravo. And why people like to watch it is because it's an interesting balance of jealousy of wanting to be those people, and superiority better than you.
T-Mobile Representative
I don't know, man.
Ryder Strong
I think that, I think it might be even simpler for me than that. Like, I feel like there's just kind of a weird sense of community that came at him over me. By the end, you know, when they were, like, updating everybody at the end, I was like, oh, yeah, I guess I kind of, Kind of do want to spend some time with you.
Will Friedle
Wow.
Ryder Strong
I know.
Will Friedle
I didn't get that.
Ryder Strong
I was like, I just. You feel like you're in the friend group, you know, it's like we're adjacent to these people and you just. Because by, you know, you show up every day, you look at them all the time. They're beautiful. They have, like, fancy cars and fancy clothing. It's like, yeah, sure, I, I, I
T-Mobile Ad Voice
guess I could see it.
Ryder Strong
Like, it's just kind of like, why not? You know, what else am I doing? My, my TV? Watching PodM.
Will Friedle
People love Pod meets World. I mean, a lot of people say that. They're like, we feel like we just get to hang out with you, you know, during the week.
Ryder Strong
The fact that we're talking about something low stakes is part of the appeal, right?
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Like. Cause we're not, we're not an NPR show covering, you know, the war in Ukraine or We're not talking about actually important stuff. We're talking about our TV show that we did when we were kids. And I think that's part of the comfort is, like, look, because people's lives are hard, everybody's life, you know?
K Host (possibly Kyle or another host)
Sure.
Ryder Strong
So when you want your entertainment to just be an escape, like, I think there's worse things, you know?
Will Friedle
Oh, I don't disagree. But for me, the constant fighting and bickering just makes me uncomfortable. So I find nothing relaxing about watching the show. Like, I watch through my fingers a lot of times, like, oh, God, I just, I don't want to be in this room with these people. I hated high school, and this is very high school to me still.
Ryder Strong
Okay. You know, I'm realizing the moment for me, it's the Gavin Kenney scene in this episode really got me very sweet because I feel like he has been, we pointed out, he's been, like, the producer's avatar. He's been the shit stirrer. He's been the one. And you could see him having to confront that. And it felt very real. And it felt like he prioritized and was like, no. And I love that he wouldn't admit that he cried later because it, you know, because it showed a drive towards privacy that felt very human and felt like he wasn't just crying for the. He was actually embarrassed, probably, that he had had that moment. And I was like, you know, these people are actually probably pretty good friends, and they're probably there for each other when it really matters. And that this is just a TV show that they're, you know, they're all making a living off of, and they're all able to, like. And I can see it, like, if you're a beautiful rich person and somebody comes up to you and says, could you just. Could we just follow you guys around? I could see, you know, for better or worse, I could see why people would agree to do that. I would agree, of course.
Will Friedle
Yeah, of course. I also, again, I see in this day and age, there really is no such thing as bad publicity.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
Yeah.
Will Friedle
And the idea that if you get on one of these shows, I mean, it's funny. Sue and I were having a talk the other day where I'll bet you the vast majority of people on reality shows, whatever reality show, have auditioned for a bunch of them.
Ryder Strong
Yeah.
Will Friedle
It's never like, oh, I've only wanted to be on this one show, so I just auditioned. No, these people have sent out for Married on First sight. They sent out for Love. Love is Blind. They want to be on Survivor. They. They just want to be on reality tv. They. Because the second you get on these things, you get hundreds of thousands of followers. It means money. So that's why, as they say, their lower third on this, half of them say influencer. Cause that's what it is now. This is how you influence people. And I think most people want to do this. It's. Again, the American dream is getting as much money as possible for doing as little work as possible. And hopefully fame comes with that. That's the American dream.
Ryder Strong
But I also. My joke Instagram handle is that we're all influencers now, as Socrates once said. And it's. But I think it's true. Like, I, you know, I wrote it as a joke at one point whenever I was setting up my account or revising my account. But I've come to realize, like, Everybody I know, like every artist, whether you're an actor, whether you're a musician, whether you're a business person, it's like you have to kind of be an influencer. You have to reach your audience or your consumers or whatever. And part of that means, you know, reaching out through social media and putting yourself front center in a way that I'm very uncomfortable with. Like, I'm, you know, I like it word based sometimes. You know, I used to be into Twitter. I'm not anymore. But, like, it's hard for me, you know, it's, it's, it's.
Will Friedle
But I don't have it at all.
Ryder Strong
I mean, our podcast, though, is that, you know, like, our podcast is us being influencers and like, so I get it. Like, and, and, you know, yeah, it's, it's, it's. It's sort of a weird state of affairs that, like, because publishing is available to all of us, we have no longer gatekeepers. We don't have editors, we don't have record companies, we don't have studios. Gatekeeping, whether our content, whether that's what we write, what we say, whatever. Since we don't have those gatekeepers, we're all equal. And so how do you stand out and how do you rise above and actually get to make art or get to express yourself in some way? Well, you hope it's talent. You hope it's talent. But what does talent even mean? Cause you could be the best singer in the world, but people won't listen unless they're already following you or whatever. You have to get the word out there.
Will Friedle
Well, what do they say? 99% of the artists on Spotify, only the top 1% that actually get downloaded, it's like 99% literally don't and make any money. Yeah, I still, I pitched a show that I want to pitch again to somebody, which is literally just called the 99. And it's every week you have on one of the 99% that never gets anything in Spotify and you do a live music show.
Ryder Strong
All right, episode nine, in the City. Out of the city in Connecticut, at a farmhouse. The two episodes, like the big ultimate drama, completely takes place out of the city.
Will Friedle
So on a show called in the City.
Ryder Strong
Yes. So they are still doing their thanks their friendsgiving. We see the night before when they're talking about their paintball bruises and eating s'. Mores. Next day, we have a shopping mission going with Kyle, Danielle, Kenny, Whitney and Owen. Lindsay is talking to her baby over the. Over her phone facetiming. With her baby. There's this funny moment in the store where Kyle gets Amanda some pirates booty and says, that's how I win her back.
Will Friedle
That's how I win her back. She survives on pirates, but, yeah, because she's stoned. We. We all love pirate booty, trust me. But there's nothing like it.
Ryder Strong
We get a flashback to the night before, which after, apparently the drama of their big blowout, he did say I love you to her. Danielle tells Whitney that the whole single mom card comment, you know, they start talking about that, and ex. And Danielle explains that they're going to hold on to this phrase if you're not careful. And then Danielle realizes that Whitney is actually not backing down from the comments. She's kind of doubling down on that.
Will Friedle
She's doubling down, right? Exactly.
Ryder Strong
I was like, I'm not sure where
Will Friedle
I fall in this conversation.
Ryder Strong
I don't either. I know. Because you said something last week about how you were like, she did play the.
Will Friedle
She totally play the mom card.
Ryder Strong
All right, we'll get into it. Cause I do think she did. And I think, you know, and I think that that criticism is pretty valid.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
But then there's this extra layer that Whitney keeps adding to it, which is she has a nanny. She can't. And it's like. But she's not really complaining that much about being a mom.
Will Friedle
She also is a mom and is a single mom. Yes, she has help, but a lot of people do. She's a single mom. But I love. And we'll get into it later. But I love how they always. It's like, you can't play the single mom card. It's because you hate all women. And it's like, wait, whoa, whoa.
Ryder Strong
It's a little intense.
Will Friedle
Where the hell did that come from? Yeah, so it was that they jumped it up. They ratcheted it up quite a bit.
Ryder Strong
All right, well, Amanda and the crew are going apple picking. Amanda goes through describing her panic attack and her feelings there, which, I mean, it definitely sounds like a textbook panic attack.
Will Friedle
Oh, yeah, yeah. She had a phone.
Ryder Strong
But the way she phrases it, she says she's. She heard a voice or something in her saying, get out. Which I kind of took to mean that she was talking about the relationship like she needs to talk.
Will Friedle
Yeah, I did, too.
Ryder Strong
Yeah, okay. Yeah, okay.
Will Friedle
I did, too. Like, it was. It was. Something snapped and it was done.
Ryder Strong
Like, she realized it was like, it's definitely over. Super interesting that we kind of saw it on camera, you know, and that they chose to make It. At that filmic moment we talked about.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Seems pretty accurate for her experience. It's also.
Will Friedle
I mean, it seemed kind of one of the things she's talking about is. Is the culmination of he was clearly drunk again and kind of yelling about,
Ryder Strong
I'm not doing this.
T-Mobile Representative
I'm not doing.
Will Friedle
And she probably just saw the rest of her life and was like, can't.
Kyle MacLachlan
Okay.
Ryder Strong
It's never going to end.
Will Friedle
This is never going to stop.
Ryder Strong
It's never stop either. I mean, it's. They're so.
Will Friedle
They are. Some people are just wrong for each other. And it's also. It's one of those things where people always say, and I get it, we're in love.
Cal Penn
Yep.
Ryder Strong
Okay.
Will Friedle
Love is the easiest part of any relationship. You basically don't. Don't. You're not making yourself fall in love. You either fall in love or you don't. Love is love. That's.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
It's.
Will Friedle
It's just a feeling in your brain. It is literally there's biochemically about the
Ryder Strong
same as, like, chocolate.
Will Friedle
Eating large amounts of chocolate. Yeah. So again, but the rest of the relationship is. Is trust and respect and intim. And love is easy.
Ryder Strong
You know how many people are in
Will Friedle
prison for killing people they loved? It's not.
Ryder Strong
I'm sick of hearing.
Will Friedle
But we're in love. Your relationship is not working. And I think she. We did. We saw it. It was captured on film where she was like, I'm done.
K Host (possibly Kyle or another host)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
I think. I think 10 years is a good long drive.
Will Friedle
Yeah. You gave it a shot.
K Host (possibly Kyle or another host)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
All right. With the other crew, Lindsey is clearly upset about the single mom card being played. We cut back to Whitney in her car saying, well, she is a nanny. So they just keep going. Showdown is coming. Showdown is coming. We get to the apple picking cider spot. Thank God there's alcohol here.
Will Friedle
I know, but it's so Connecticut. This just brought me right home. There's spots. It's really pretty manic.
Ryder Strong
It looks so cold.
Will Friedle
Freezing.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. I would much rather be doing this in Northern California where it never gets this cold.
Kristen Davis
No.
Will Friedle
You gotta wrap yourself in a blanket.
Ryder Strong
So beautiful.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
Yeah.
Will Friedle
Yeah, it's awesome.
Ryder Strong
And then once they arrive, they get out of the car and Lindsay immediately just starts talking, like, about being a mom. Like, she's, like, beating her. I couldn't believe it.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
All right. The drinking begins. Luckily, they have cider so we can drink.
Will Friedle
Noon.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. They do some apple picking and they sit around a fire, freezing cold. Lindsay goes to the car. We'll find out why later calling Frank. Your guy getting that milk? Getting the milkman on the line.
Will Friedle
A milkman on the line, my friend.
Ryder Strong
So then Georgina brings up the single mom card. Got comment to Whitney. And Whitney's defense is about her relationship with Yvonne. She says, I have different standards of behavior with friends, which is I, I. This is where I was kind of like, okay, like, that is a valid critic. You did play the mom card. Like, and, you know, and this is, this is the valid critic. Like, saying you were playing is, like, not worth it. Like, you were just a shitty friend is really what you.
Podcast Announcer
Like.
Ryder Strong
You used the mom thing, and that was your excuse, but really, you just took this opportunity to kind of not support your friend, who, you know, Yvonne, again, whatever. So that's the criticism I do think is valid. So they go at it. Whitney's trying to make it about how Lindsay treats her friends, which I think is valid. But Georgina is insulted on behalf of the mother comment, which I also think is valid. I don't disagree. But she takes it to this level of, you two just don't like women as a couple, which is an intense. I know. I know. But I do think, you know, it was interesting to see Georgina get this emotional because she's actually been pretty cool, like, this entire season. And, you know, I think it's one of those things, like, when you are. When you're friends with, with people that don't have kids, and especially if you're a single mom, like, you probably feel. I just, I think she's defensive, like, overly sensitive. Do you know what I mean?
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
And she's emotional and sensitive in a way that it probably isn't warranted, but, you know, I get it because, like, there have been. There have been times I, like, watched my wife, you know, like, she's lost it on me during a Mother's Day one time, you know, because.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Really?
Ryder Strong
Oh, yeah. You know, and, like, for me, like, I really, like, I think I'm giving her credit all the time, but I think that there's something to be in a mom specifically that is very exhausting and taken for granted by, by most people, you know, and it's not just the time management. It's actually like a mental space thing, you know? Cause, like, I look at it, I'm like, with my wife, I'm always like, I'm doing 50% of the work. Like, because we split everything as equally as possible, but that's not really true. Like, there's something about motherhood that goes unspoken sort of, and that just takes up so much. She does more of the planning, for instance. Do you know what I mean? Which is work. It's like, we could say, like. But she's planning, she's thinking ahead. She's also the one who, like, will think of Indy's emotional states and, like, his food and stuff in a way that I just don't, like. Unless the kid says to me, like, I'm hungry, or, like, I like. It literally won't occur to me unless I, like, write it down as a note to myself where she's so. And I think that that just is exhausting. I think that takes up a lot of space. And when people don't see that and they don't respect it.
Cal Penn
Ooh.
Ryder Strong
So I could see Georgia lashing out. It's like she says the wrong thing. Like, this is not a fair comment, but it's coming from a place of, like. I think something a lot of women relate to a lot of mothers. I do, too.
Will Friedle
But I also think you do get some of these people, and I'm not. Not sure if she's one of them, but you do get some of these people that, like, have a baby, and in three months, their entire identity is being a mom. That's all I am. Everything I am. Oh, you don't understand what it's like to be a mom. It's like, you've been a mom for three months. Relax.
Ryder Strong
I know multiple people who became, like, mommy bloggers.
Will Friedle
That's what I mean.
Ryder Strong
Writing books, wanting to. And they were. And I was like, people came to. I think I'm going to start a podcast about being a mom. Like, multiple people. Yeah. And I was like, well, you're just in it. You've just found a new identity, which is a new identity, and it takes up a lot of time, but it's. You know, it's like you've just woken up and discovered cheese. So you're now a cheese expert.
Will Friedle
That's what I'm saying.
Ryder Strong
It's like, it's not that you play
Will Friedle
pickleball once, and it's like, all right,
Ryder Strong
I'm a pickleball expert. Like, okay. It happens to a lot of parents, man.
Will Friedle
I know.
Ryder Strong
It's. It's. It's. It's all consuming. It takes up. So I'm sure.
Will Friedle
I couldn't even imagine. I'm sure, but I couldn't even imagine.
Ryder Strong
I know those first couple years, it's crazy, man.
Will Friedle
Like, yeah.
Ryder Strong
When you realize, like, the moment. The moment we came home with Indy and it was just the two of us. Bringing him home from the hospital. I mean, it's like I was truly terrified. I was like, wait, she will die. This thing that I'm holding, which doesn't even look like a human, by the way. They're like little slugs. That's why Eraserhead. Did you ever see the movie Eraserhead? Yes. Remember when it's like the baby is like this weird little puppet? That's actually what fatherhood is like, or parenthood. It's like, I don't know what to do with this thing. It's so alienating. And it's just like. And then it becomes once you get over that fear, you've conquered the world. Do you know what I mean? Within a few months, when you figured out sleep training and how to change a diaper. Oh, you're like a superhuman. It's so fun. It's an amazing process. Terrifying.
Will Friedle
But it sounds like it's not for me, even slightly.

intelligence data to H2025 hey everyone, it's Cal Penn. I'm the host of Earsay the Audible and Ihear Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Ray Porter, the narrator of Andy Weir's audiobook project, Hail Mary, massive sci fi adventure about survival and science and what happens when you wake up alone, very far from Earth.
K Host (possibly Kyle or another host)
I really had to make a decision because I caught myself getting that frog in my throat and starting to get teary as I'm narrating some of these sections. And it's like, okay, yo, yo, yo. Is this indulgent? And I really thought about it. I was like, no. At this point, it would kind of be betraying the trust the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through it. But there's places in this book that that deeply, emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh my God, I cried at the end. It's like, yeah, dude, me too.
Cal Penn
Listen to Irsay the Audible and I Heart Audiobook Club on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts.
Ryder Strong
All right, well, Lindsay's on the phone with Frank and he's offering to hang out with her, take her away from all this drama.
Will Friedle
Surprised Frank learned how to use a phone.
Ryder Strong
And then my favorite shot of the show, Kyle pissing in the wind. Just whipping it out, taking this. Like there are cameras here. Kyle, I don't know if you know this. We're in public. We're at an apple picking orchard. You're at an apple picking orchard. They probably have a. At least a porta potty somewhere for you to use, but there's probably other families around just like basically singing sailor songs off in the corner. How much cider did you possibly have? You have still have the dinner to have. It's amazing. He's amazing.
Will Friedle
He's. He's amazing. You don't know what it's like. You don't know what it's like. The first time you bring Kyle home from the hospital and you, you realize this thing's gonna die if you don't
Ryder Strong
give him a DJ job. All right, Back at the house, Whitney goes upstairs, people get cooking. Andrea sets at the table because I guess he's been raised right. He knows how to set a table. Whitney and Lindsay have their confrontation. Whitney gets her to admit that she did indeed play the mom card.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
Okay.
Will Friedle
But then she's like, I'm allowed to play it whenever I want.
Ryder Strong
It's like, I guess, right? But then Lindsay brings up the nanny comments like, what does me having a nanny to do with it? And Whitney really doesn't have a good answer.
Will Friedle
So I think the answer is, I mean, it's obviously easier to raise a child if you have wealth, right? That's what it comes down to is there's a lot of people that are also have a baby and are also single moms that still have to work and are like, maybe I can bring my baby to my mom's house for a while. They don't have nannies. This is, I think what she's saying.
Ryder Strong
But she's also, I think the assumption is that Lindsay has been complaining about motherhood. And I don't think that that's true.
Will Friedle
Like, once you. I don't think so either.
Ryder Strong
So it would be a great mom making that observation.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Is pretty, pretty. Like, you know, you just can't, like, because life is not a zero sum game. Like, parenthood is hard no matter what level you're doing it. You know, life is difficult often, no matter what. Like, yes, there's a certain amount of things that money could take away, but ultimately, like, she is still single, you know, she's. There's still issues, you know, and to take that away from her because she has money or she has a nanny, that's not fair. You know, if, if, if Lindsay were always like, really truly Playing the single mom card all the time. I could see it.
Kyle MacLachlan
Right?
Ryder Strong
But she's not, so. And he has to confront that. And, like, yeah, I get it. I love this moment with Amanda, Danielle, and Owen doing a puzzle, and Amanda comments like, there's nothing brings people together more than other people's drama.
Will Friedle
I love that she's like, I bet you we can finish this entire puzzle before they're done with their conversation.
Ryder Strong
All right, so then Kenny and Whitney asked Georgina if she really thinks they hate women, and she says, it sure sounded like it. Lindsay backs off and says she never meant to mean them. Georgina starts to accept that, and then Gavin jumps in, and Gavin, shut up. I'm sick of you. Kenny jumps on Gavin, too. Kyle's like, gavin, get out of this situation.
Will Friedle
He's right.
Ryder Strong
Yes. And Gavin says, I'm not antagonizing. She's the one that's telling me to shut up. Whatever. Gavin is jumping in because that's his mode. Yeah. Back to some food cooking. Kyle does some horrible song, rap, whatever. Getting his DJing ready, which is coming up.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Will Friedle
They're like, why are you DJ'ding? Our thanks. Friendsgiving dinner. What's happening? Yeah,
Ryder Strong
I mean, he's entertaining, but that is my worst nightmare, like, what he does. If I was at a Friendsgiving and that guy was dj, like, showing up with the headphones, I'd be like, what?
T-Mobile Representative
What are we doing?
Ryder Strong
But I'm not a dancer. Not my thing. I just want turkey. Kenny and Gavin go outside to have a talk. This is, like I mentioned earlier, a really sweet scene. I thought, you know, I agree. And it's like, it's a much needed conversation. It made me appreciate these two guys. I appreciate Gavin. I feel like Gavin's playing a role. You know what I mean? Like, this whole season, he's been playing a role.
Will Friedle
I think so too.
Ryder Strong
And I think when he's called out on it in this way, and he says, like, you're one of the most important people in my life. And he apologizes.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
It's like, yeah, I think he's great. Yeah.
Will Friedle
But it is. It's. It is. It's like, dude, you're. You're. You gotta relax, you know, Stop jumping into stuff. Stop stirring the pot.
Ryder Strong
And I love how he's like, you.
Kyle MacLachlan
You.
Will Friedle
You try not to keep score or you try not to, you know, put a pin in everything. But he was like, all right, look, you called me out for not liking dogs. You called me a boy. You called me that. It's like, how much Other shit, dude, before I finally have to say something like, this is bad. You just keep inserting yourself places. And I was frankly waiting for Gavin to push back more, and I'm glad he was kind of like, no, you're right.
Ryder Strong
No, you're right.
Will Friedle
This is because I think he was
Ryder Strong
always playing a role when he was doing those things. You know what I mean? He saw himself as like, oh, I'm on the show. This is kind of my job. I'm sure a producer was, like, egging him on a little bit. And I think when he was. When it came down to him, when his friend looked at him and was like, dude, you're my friend, he was like, oh, shit, you're right. Like, that is way more important than, you know.
Will Friedle
So I. I'm dying to know on any of these shows, and I'm sure it changes from show to show, but I'm dying to know how involved the producers are. Like, are they pulling people in?
K Host (possibly Kyle or another host)
Pulling.
Ryder Strong
Very involved.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
But I mean, to the point of,
Will Friedle
like, pulling people aside and being like, you know, this is what she just said about you. I mean, you think it's that.
Ryder Strong
Yes, man.
Will Friedle
That interact. That involved.
Ryder Strong
I totally think that's the deal.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Will Friedle
I think probably.
Ryder Strong
And I think that these. I think that the line between the people on the show and the producers is blurry enough that they probably all think of each other as friends at times. Do you know what I mean? Like, the producers make the show. People feel like they're their advocates when actually sometimes they're exploiting them and vice versa.
Will Friedle
You know what I mean?
Ryder Strong
And vice versa. The people on the show are often playing into the producer's desires, and so it's an interesting dynamic. I would love. I think that that actually is its own sort of show.
Will Friedle
It's like a producer's reality show behind the scenes of a reality show. As the reality show, it's actually not a bad idea.
Ryder Strong
It's a sketch. But no, I mean, no, like, for real.
Will Friedle
And we don't even know the reality show that they're doing. But you literally could do a second show, take any one of these shows and throw a camera just on the producers and the crew, and it's a whole other reality show.
Ryder Strong
I know.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Well, it's like Emily Longeretta's article on Survivor.
Cal Penn
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Like, in some ways, it was more entertaining than the entire season. I was like, yes, yes. I want to know more about this.
Will Friedle
It's crazy stuff.
Kyle MacLachlan
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
All right, back inside. Kyle set up his DJ booth, grabs himself A turkey leg just sticking with a drunken sailor. They're like, we haven't even sat down. We haven't said grace. Gonna pee in the corner here.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Like, let me go put out the fire.
Will Friedle
He's not even trying to hide it at this point. And I love what he. And we'll get into it, what he says at the very end. Because when. When they're. When we go back to the conversation, when it says two months later and we go back to the conversation that the entire series started on, he basically addresses it in a way that I thought was very interesting.
Kyle MacLachlan
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
They sit down to eat. Kenny and Gavin talk about how they made up again. Gavin does not really admit that he was crying, which I thought was kind of sweet, and revealed like, that it was, I think, a real genuine moment, you know, that if anything, he probably wishes he didn't have on camera, which just makes me like him. Danielle brings up her beef. Are we moving forward or is there residual resentment from the past? The Owen marriage issue. Lindsay apologizes for the chatter. Yeah, everyone. Everyone's like.
Will Friedle
Admits that they're like, danielle, we've never seen you this happy.
Ryder Strong
Yeah, we all like going now. We finally got to spend some time with him. Everyone, cheers. Gavin says, this is what friends giving is all about. And this is where I was like, you know, I kind of like these people. It's all been a little manufactured, a little, you know.
Will Friedle
Right.
Ryder Strong
But I do, like, like, it's cool that I also. I think this episode was sweet to watch them make for food for each other.
Will Friedle
Like. Right.
Ryder Strong
You know, it's an important thing. Everybody does their own thing. Even Kyle, you know, he sets up his dj, Boothy. They're all contributing something, and I think that that's what's been missing from their lives. If you just go to bars and order drinks and. Do you know what I mean? Like, yes.
Podcast Announcer
No.
Will Friedle
It definitely.
Ryder Strong
When you watch people, like, cook together and spend time together, it's like, you know, we did Friendsgiving last year. It's like, it's the best feeling.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
It is.
Will Friedle
It was.
Ryder Strong
And when you all sit down and you're like, right. And so I think it brought me in. It just put if it was like, oh, these people are pretty cool. Like, they. They all contributed something. They all just made me like them more. I was like, yeah, they can do it when they want to. It's just that the show isn't about that. You know, this show has not been focused on that aspect of their lives.
Will Friedle
They definitely this towards at the end here Seemed more like a genuine group of friends than they had any other time in the.
Ryder Strong
Yes. And I bet you if they were left to their own devices without a camera crew, it would probably be more of this, which.
Will Friedle
Probably. But you also wonder because I guess, you know, nobody knew Whitney, nobody knew Kenny. You know, they brought these people onto the quote unquote show. So it's also a manufactured friend group. You know, not all of them, obviously. Amanda and Kyle. And they all knew each other, but, I mean, there was certain groups where they were like, oh, we're gonna bring you in a couple new friends. Okay, here we go.
Cal Penn
Right.
Ryder Strong
Well, that's. That's what we're watching happen. Right then my nightmare dancing while Kyle DJs. Hell yes. Oh, this is like. Yeah, get it. Being with a group of friends. Like a small group. Like. Well, not a small. I mean, how many other? Like a dozen of them?
Will Friedle
Not even. Not even 10, eight.
Ryder Strong
And trying to make it into a dance party. No.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yes.
Will Friedle
That's so funny, by the way, because the first person to start dancing at a dance party like this is going to be your wife, Alex.
Ryder Strong
Oh, yeah.
Will Friedle
So that you're married to somebody. Like, let's go.
Ryder Strong
She has a. She does interpretive dancing at weddings. And guess who know.
Will Friedle
I remember it at my wedding.
Ryder Strong
Yeah, she does.
Kristen Davis
It's the thing.
Will Friedle
I remember your wedding. Yeah, it's the same thing.
Ryder Strong
It's the thing. She's Italian, man. She grew up in New York going to New York Italian weddings.
Will Friedle
She better do it at my birthday party too, man. I'm psyched. Can't wait.
Ryder Strong
So in the morning, Amanda's the first up because she was the first to bed. Probably got stoned.
Kyle MacLachlan
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
And just put herself to sleep with her pirate's booty. Everyone else is hungover, though. They pack their bags as they walk out. Kyle and Amanda, we're not going home together. Kyle says, feels like it's over. Yes, it's over. But it's done. Cut to two months later. We get the headlines. Kyle's on a talk show. He doesn't believe the rumors about West. And we get April.
Will Friedle
Those are the headlines that popped on your screen. Mine were like, lettuce can give you explosive diarrhea. And all that.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Kind of.
Will Friedle
I was probably watching the wrong thing.
T-Mobile Representative
Damn it.
Will Friedle
Yeah. Although this is how the show started. They went. They took us back to the. To the beginning.
Ryder Strong
Yep. So now it's Amanda and Kyle talking. Kyle says, you know, you. You just point blank lied to me about West. She says, I didn't leave you for West.
Will Friedle
Yeah, she's. She's still saying there was no affair. Yeah, and my guess is she means physically, because I think she was texting. Hell, yes. I'm. I'm guessing that there was some. I mean, we've said connection between people
Ryder Strong
usually have one foot out the door because they already have an opportunity. There's that potential, whether it actually manifests or not. There's always, like. People don't just break up. Usually.
Will Friedle
I will bet you. I will put. I would put a good amount of money on the fact that when she walked away from that table with that panic attack and went into the other room, she texted. Texted or called him. I will bet you they had a talk that very night.
Ryder Strong
Well, then Amanda Kyle reminisce about posting their breakup message to the world, which is just such a crazy ritual. I mean, I've never. I've never broken up. You know, I've been with my wife since before social media.
Will Friedle
Yeah, me too.
Ryder Strong
We. I never did, like, dating apps. I completely miss that. And I've never had to deal with, like, the breakup thing. It's such a weird ritual that they have to, like, agree, like, what are we saying to the world? And how did we put it up there?
Will Friedle
But again, you don't. You don't.
Ryder Strong
I mean, I think you do, even if you're not on a reality show. No, but I think people do this on Facebook now. This is just. You have to, like, if you want.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
All right.
Will Friedle
Status.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. Because otherwise it gets you, you. You. It's like you put people in an uncomfortable position. Otherwise, maybe, you know, because they don't. They don't know if that. You're broken up. One person changes their status.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
No, I get it when you're like, hey, we want to maintain our. You know, we want to maintain our
Will Friedle
privacy by being as public about it as we possibly can.
Ryder Strong
It's just the way the world is, though.
Will Friedle
I know, but then you get.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
You.
Will Friedle
You end up with these. These ridiculous phrases in the lexicon, like conscious uncoupling, where it's like, what? He broke up, Dude, Come on. So, yeah, it's rightfully mocked.
Ryder Strong
That was Right.
Will Friedle
Yeah. And should have. It should have been. By the way, rightfully mocked is a great band name, but.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Will Friedle
No, I get. I get it.
Ryder Strong
It's.
Will Friedle
It's a shame that things that are this ridiculous are now the norm. Like that. You're right.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
The hat.
Ryder Strong
It doesn't even have to. It's. You don't even have to be in a reality show because it's kind of everybody's life now.
Will Friedle
We're all.
Ryder Strong
We're all influencers now, baby. Yeah, it's true. Then Amanda says this really weird thing about how her drama has helped lover boy.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Which is so weird. And then she's like. And then he says it's not. Or she says.
Will Friedle
She says, because everyone hates it for him.
Ryder Strong
It's eight for me.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Oh, she's talking about feeling that when she walks down the street, which I'm kind of like, I don't. You know, he chose to be on a reality show that.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
That is the.
Will Friedle
And then you chose to. Whether. Whether people believe it or not, you chose to break up after 10 years and instantly go out with his. One of his best friends. So come on. But this is where I liked Kyle because Kyle was like. When he listed, he's like, look, maybe I didn't handle it well. Maybe I just had a good old fashioned SP spiral. And I'm thinking that's what we saw a lot of on this show. My guess is he was drinking a ton and he was just spiraling. I think, I think he just kind of owned that, like. Yeah. But we'll see if that's. It sounds like he's been in a spiral for.
Ryder Strong
I was gonna say years. We haven't watched 10 seasons of the show.
Will Friedle
Where,
Ryder Strong
where is the rock bottom of this spiral?
Will Friedle
Yeah, yeah. No, this guy needs. I mean, it. It sounds like for his own well being. This guy needs. Needs to quit.
Ryder Strong
Luckily, he's going on a 15 city tour. DJing, partying.
Will Friedle
Sure, that'll help. I know, I know.
Ryder Strong
This is the thing, man. This is like being a comedian, you know, like, it's just so bad for alcohol. Alcohol and drugs. Because you just, you. You get so high off of the socializing and that is your job is to be the life, like literally the life of the party. And it's so much easier to do that when you're drunk or whatever.
Will Friedle
There's a great. It was Mickey, you know, Mickey Mannel's a very famous baseball player from the 50s and the 60s and he was considered. Make the touchdowns, you make the touchdown with the hockey net.
Ryder Strong
I know the name Mickey Mantle.
Will Friedle
I've heard that.
Ryder Strong
Mickey, man.
Will Friedle
So Mickey Mantle was a. Was a legendary alcoholic.
Ryder Strong
Oh, really?
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
And.
Will Friedle
Oh yeah. Legendary while he played baseball. Oh, that Forever.
Cal Penn
Yeah.
Will Friedle
For life.
Ryder Strong
This is why baseball. I know the fact that you could like smoke cigarettes, drink, still be like one of the greatest.
Will Friedle
Buy cigarettes and beer. So overweight, you're like, what and but so his. His wife, after he passed away, famously said, you know, people would come up to in a bar and say, can I buy you a drink? I want to have a drink with you. So you had one drink with Mickey Mantle, but he had 20 drinks that night with people coming up and asking for a drink. And so that. That's the way it was. Whereas Chris Harley's manager one time said that she saw him drinking, you know, picture after picture, and she literally went up to him and said, chris, no one's going to take it away from you.
T-Mobile Representative
Right.
Will Friedle
Like, you don't. You can slow down.
Ryder Strong
I forget who worked with. I think it was Blake Clark. Clark. Who played Chet on.
Kyle MacLachlan
Right.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
I think he was telling us about working with. With Chris Farley when he had, like, an AA sponsor with him.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
And people would still offer him drinks, and he would say, like, no, this is my guy, my AA sponsor. And then five minutes later, he would come up to the person and be like, if you put it in a different cup, yeah, I will have a drink. And it was like, oh, he was, like, sneaking drinks.
Will Friedle
And ji.
K Host (possibly Kyle or another host)
Same thing.
Ryder Strong
That's a sad thing, because, like, they. They would be wanting to. You know, you want the story around. Yeah. They want to be.
Will Friedle
I had a guy, and then Chris Farley came up to me, and I, like, had to put the drink in a different thing.
Ryder Strong
Have it.
Kyle MacLachlan
Yeah.
Will Friedle
And that's. I mean, it's awful. Meanwhile, the guy's dying inside, so it's. Yeah. I think Kyle is probably a pretty sick guy.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. All right, we cut to June.
Cal Penn
Update.
Ryder Strong
Kenny. Things are great with him. And Whitney might have accidentally got married in Peru. This is a weird thing. They did some kind of ceremony, and where the guy.
Will Friedle
I'm sorry, What?
Ryder Strong
I'm sorry.
Will Friedle
The hotel set this up for us. What's happening.
Cal Penn
Exactly.
Ryder Strong
I thought that was funny, but. And then Georgina says she's officially ready to date, being set up with the guy. She's not trying to figure things out with her ex, which I guess she had been doing. We didn't see much.
Will Friedle
We didn't know that, but.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. And, you know, she talks about how she was trying to make things work for her ex for the sake of her kids. But then she had a friend who had divorced parents point out, hey, I just had more people who loved me, which I thought was a really cool thing and that.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
And that Georgina's like, that kind of turned her head around. She's like, okay. I think it's. You know. And this is totally True. I've like, I remember I actually took a class in college. There was a requirement in my freshman year of college that was part historical, part psychology. Class was team taught by a psychologist and a historian on the American family. And so we had to read all these studies about the American family and the history of America. Super interesting. But one of the things a whole bunch of studies have shown that kids are better off if you're split up. If you're unhappy. Do you know what I mean?
Will Friedle
Oh, sure.
Cal Penn
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
If you're unhappy staying together. Yeah.
Will Friedle
For the sake of children. Yay.
Ryder Strong
Is. Is way worse for the kids.
Will Friedle
Yeah. Two healthy parents that are.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
That.
Will Friedle
That seems to be co parenting. Well, seems to be better than in staying in a toxic relationship.
Ryder Strong
Exactly.
Will Friedle
Yeah, sure, sure.
Ryder Strong
And we get Lindsay, who is now talking about how she won't be on the outside as a mom because three of their friends are gonna be moms.
Will Friedle
Maddie told us that everybody was preggers.
Ryder Strong
Nick doing the gender reveal with the cake. I hate gender reveal stuff. I hate it so much. I thought you're gonna say you hate cake.
T-Mobile Representative
I do.
Ryder Strong
I hate cake too. This is my nightmare cake. Gender reveal. Jesus, just have a baby. Who cares?
Will Friedle
No, you're supposed to have your cake,
Ryder Strong
your gender reveal, and then you dance with your friends in a small group.
Will Friedle
You know that.
Ryder Strong
Ryder, have your cake and gender reveal too.
Will Friedle
And dance it too.
Ryder Strong
My nightmare Kyle. Gender reveal. Kyle, D.J. and a gender reveal cake eating party. Oh, sweet. All right. On a reality show then, Andrea, they're having a baby and he's happy to be a daddy. Girl, you keep going with your reverse cowboy. Andre.
Will Friedle
It's g. It's girl.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
Dad.
Ryder Strong
He's funny, though.
Will Friedle
He's funny.
Ryder Strong
I mean, that's the thing.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
That's the thing.
Ryder Strong
I like them all. By the end of this, I was like, you know all of these people. I feel like I know them. They're funny. Owen and Danielle are having a baby. We see this very touching scene of her mom finding the sonogram.
Cal Penn
Yeah.
Will Friedle
Nobody, nobody pulls out in the city. That's all we got. We found out here.
Ryder Strong
He's staying in. In the city.
Will Friedle
Staying in the city.
Ryder Strong
In the city. All right, so that, that's a wrap. And I felt, yeah, it was like a slight season, man. It just kind of, you know, you get all these riled up emotions. I'm not sure what all of it was worth, what it was for.
Will Friedle
I agree. I don't. I'm not, not entirely sure of the, of the ride of this one.
Ryder Strong
No, I mean, I kind of ultimately like, I kind of like these people. I don't feel as judgy as I did at the beginning.
Will Friedle
You're going to want, even if we say so, if we are not covering season, the next season of this.
Cal Penn
No.
Will Friedle
Are you still going to watch it?
Ryder Strong
I don't have time for TV shows and books that I want. You know, like, I genuinely don't watch television. Like, I've just cut it out of my. Which sucks. But like, yeah, unless somebody tells me that a show like has gone start to finish and is worth it.
Will Friedle
Like, like Widow's Bay.
Ryder Strong
Yes.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Like, well, but that's still ongoing. I'm watching that. That is the one thing I've been watching ongoing. I'm saying, like, if somebody like I waited for Breaking Bad, you know, I waited. It was like the way. So like severance, I'm avoiding because I watched a couple episodes. I loved it, but I was like, this could be lost. It could go nowhere. Like, I want to wait until somebody tells me, no, no, they landed the plane. It's worth it.
Will Friedle
Okay.

Cal Penn
Hey, everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay, The Audible and iHeart audiobook. This week on the podcast, I'm sitting down with Wil Wheaton, who played Gordie Lachance in stand by me 40 years ago and now narrates Stephen King's the Body, the novella that inspired it all. We talk about what it's like to return to a story that shaped his life, channeling his memories of River Phoenix in the recording booth and why the friendships you have at 12 might be the most important ones you'll ever have.
Ryder Strong
I know Gordon.
Cal Penn
Gordy Lachance.
Will Friedle
I am Gordy Lachance. Like, I mean, even when I was
Ryder Strong
a little kid, I was Gordy Lachance when I didn't know it.
Cal Penn
Listen to Earsay the Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club on the iHeartradio app or wherever you get your podcasts.
Ryder Strong
I'm going to check in on these characters. I imagine, like, someday, like, you know, and. And I think the way I will check in is with a friend of ours going way back to when we were very young, a Mr. Lee Norris. It turns out he who played Minkus is a huge Bravo guy.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Huge fan of in the City and all the Housewives. And he has a Special message for us that he sent from the field. This is our correspondent, Lee Norris. Minkus himself giving us an update.
Will Friedle
Bravo expert Minkus.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Okay, Ryder and Will, I am in New York. And I think you guys now know that my wife and I are big Bravo fans. So we have ventured into the unknown. We walked through the five guys upstairs. And we are officially in. What is this called? The Garrett in the West Village. And I will tell you, I was fully prepared for this to be a ghost town. Like, I was expecting this to just be like, you know, a place that wasn't really that cool. But it is. It's. It's crowded in here. And when I say crowded, I mean it is full of geners. And we are officially the olds in the corner. Okay, a couple of quick things I want to tell you. Number one, I have not seen lover boy anywhere in the vicinity. No one is drinking lover boy. I. I did a quick pick at the menu. And I didn't see it. And I don't see it on the bar, so.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
Wow.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
Very mediocre cocktail list. I ended up ordering a paper plane. Hold the paper plane for Minkus.
Cal Penn
Yes.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
It's actually really good. I will say. I'll give them perfect props. You know, another thing I'll say is that I keep getting the smell of french fries from the five guys Keeps wafting around in the air. And I was prepared to be snarky about it, But I'm actually just really hungry. And it's kind of genius. I mean, people are drinking and you just stumble downstairs and you get some fried food. And I mean, I think it's great. Definitely catching some man hating vibes in here. And I did try to order a murky spark, but the bartender did not know what I was talking about. So. Just wanted to let you know I am braving the wilds of Gen Z, reporting from the ground. You guys are doing a phenomenal job. Keep holding this. Keep holding it down for us. Bravo, bros. And Cindy. And my best. Okay, I'm out. Bye.
Will Friedle
God, I love him.
Ryder Strong
I love him so much. Bravo, bros. Hold the paper plane for me because it's my new favorite line. I can't believe him. Yeah. So great. I. I want to go to the Garret so bad. Sounds delightful.
Will Friedle
I want to have too much to drink and then stumble down to five guys and get a burger. Hell yes.
T-Mobile Representative
Oh, my God.
Ryder Strong
It sounds so good. I wish we could have been there with him. Yeah, man. I mean, see, it's community building in the city. It brought us all together. Put Lee Back in our lives. Oh, I love it.
Will Friedle
It's community building.
Guest/Caller (Lee Norris)
It is.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. I feel all right.
Will Friedle
Well, speaking of bars, I got a last one for you here, my friend. All right, this is a nice one. This is how we're gonna wrap it up. We're gonna wrap it up with 8 ounces of warm chamomile tea, into which you pour 1.5 ounces of cardinal spirits, which is flora spirits, and then a lemon wheel for garnish.
Ryder Strong
That's it.
Will Friedle
And you sip it before you go to bed, and it's called the grand finale. Aw, I thought you'd like that.
Ryder Strong
That doesn't sound very good to me.
Will Friedle
Oh, it sounds awful. But most of these drinks, dude, to me, it's just put liquor in a glass and hand it to you.
Ryder Strong
No, there were a couple that I was kind of into, but. Yeah, that one's a little too sweet. I think that's.
Will Friedle
Yeah, I think that's most of the case.
Ryder Strong
I guess usually it is usually too much. It's like, you know, a hat on a hat. Yeah, I agree. A syrup on a drink on a.
Will Friedle
Wait till you. Wait till you sip the punch at my party, which is called someone spiked the punch. And it's a brand new recipe that we made just for the party.
Ryder Strong
Amazing.
Will Friedle
And it's going to be great. So you're going to dig it.
Ryder Strong
Well, in the city, it comes to a close. I gotta say, it won me over.
Will Friedle
Okay.
Ryder Strong
I'm not. I don't think I'm gonna stick it out. I don't think I'm full. Bravo, bro. But if. If Lee tells me like, that the next season has worthy moments. I mean, you know. You know, Maddie. Maddie, our producer. Matty's gonna keep watching, so I'm gonna check in. I'm gonna be like, what's going on with Kyle? How's. How's Kenny doing?
Will Friedle
Hey, what's going. You don't have. You don't have Google notifications set for. I mean, for West.
Ryder Strong
You're not.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
You're.
Ryder Strong
You're telling me you're not gonna ask about Lindsay and Franklin down the line?
Will Friedle
You're a little curious about. Frank's my new favorite thing ever.
Ryder Strong
You just want a reality show following Frank delivering milk, Frank flexing for women.
T-Mobile Ad Voice
Yes.
Will Friedle
Oh, my God. It's just called let's get Frank. It's gonna be great.
Ryder Strong
All right, well, we're gonna move into our new show, Married at First Sight, which I. You know, basically this. We're watching a show because of our arranged marriage conversation. Yeah. Because of all the horrible marriages discussed on. We, we. We're gonna learn. We're gonna learn a lot about marriage moving on, and I think it's gonna be higher stakes. Yeah, well, it's gonna be interesting. I think we'll probably end up having a more, probably more constructive, deep, deeper conversation.
Will Friedle
I've seen. I've seen. I've seen several seasons.
Ryder Strong
Okay. See, I've never watched her, so I'm excited.
Will Friedle
And it's great. It's a. It's a fun, fun show. And I think we are coming back for one more in the city because I think they're doing a reunion union. So we'll have to obviously do that. But other than that, we're. We're out. We're out of the city.
Ryder Strong

Podcast: Pod Meets World
Hosts: Ryder Strong, Will Friedle
Air Date: July 17, 2026
This episode of "Pod Meets Twirl’d" finds former "Boy Meets World" stars Ryder Strong and Will Friedle wrapping up their journey through the reality series "In the City." Known for their candid and humorous takes, the duo dives into the nuances of the show’s finale—reflecting on the manufactured drama, surprising moments of genuine connection, and why audiences remain captivated by reality TV that’s, as they call it, “a metropolitan mess.” The episode explores cast dynamics, the cultural fascination with low-stakes, upper-class friend groups, and the line between real and artificial reality TV drama. Notably, Lee Norris (Minkus from "Boy Meets World") calls in as a Bravo enthusiast, capping off the episode with on-the-ground impressions from the real-life world of Bravo fandom.

But now I do feel like I need to keep watching." | Ryder Strong | | 06:46 | “A show that's totally based around uncomfortable moments and dinners and people yelling at each other is absolutely just not for me.” | Will Friedle | | 11:25 | “Bravo... is because it's an interesting balance of jealousy of wanting to be those people, and superiority [feeling] better than you.” | Will Friedle | | 15:06 | "My joke Instagram handle is that we're all influencers now, as Socrates once said." | Ryder Strong | | 18:39 | “She also is a mom and is a single mom.
