Will Friedle
Ryder, what's your favorite thing about summer?
Ryder Strong
Well, as you know, we are a big camping family, and even though it's wildly difficult to take a whole family on the road, I absolutely love it.
Will Friedle
Well, what if I told you there was a way to manage the chaos?
Ryder Strong
Go on.
Will Friedle
Every member knows Walmart plus is summer's greatest shortcut. With free same day delivery on groceries and more, you could save yourself an errand run or a sleepless night under the stars.
Ryder Strong
Who knew?
Will Friedle
And that's not all, my friend. Walmart members also get a choice of Peacock or Paramount plus included at no additional cost.
Ryder Strong

Will Friedle
Exactly. Join Walmart. It's worth it.

There's a difference between liking a house and actually getting it.
Ryder Strong
Redfin is built to make up that difference and close the gap between finding and owning the home for you.
Will Friedle
Redfin agents close twice as many deals as other agents, so when you find
Danielle Fishel
a home you love, you're not a step behind when it's time to make an offer.
Ryder Strong
That means less watching great homes disappear and more focus on the one you'll call home.

Danielle Fishel
When we were kids, we thought adulthood meant having everything figured out.
Will Friedle
Like we'd wake up at 30 and suddenly understand taxes, health insurance, and how to fold a fitted sheet.
Ryder Strong
And then you start your own small business and you realize you do not have it all figured out.
Will Friedle
I just wish I had someone to make insurance simple.
Danielle Fishel
And that's where the Hartford comes in. They've got over 200 years of experience,
Ryder Strong
and they insure more than 1 million small businesses across the country. So they've seen it all.
Will Friedle
Retail, salons, financial services, restaurants, tech. Whatever you do, the Hartford makes it easy to get a customized quote online or by phone.

Grammar Update.
Will Friedle
Grammar updates.
Ryder Strong
We have more intel people.
Danielle Fishel
Oh, thank God. I've been dying.
Ryder Strong
I don't even remember.
Danielle Fishel
This is. I don't even know what the first update was. What is this? EM dash.
Will Friedle
Why in the double EM dash are
Ryder Strong
we doing this again with spaces on the sides? Your ellipses have spaces in between them. Now, many of you reached out to say, you too, also believe that EM dashes should have spaces on either side.
Danielle Fishel
And I didn't see anybody reach out to us. And where did they reach out?
Ryder Strong
Woo.
Will Friedle
We talk about eating and traveling.
Danielle Fishel
My back hurts.
Ryder Strong
Twos of people reached out to me. Ones and twos of people reached out
Danielle Fishel
to me in the ones.
Ryder Strong
Ryder, I agree with you and Ishiguro
Danielle Fishel
that we should have.
Ryder Strong
No, no, no, no. Here's where it gets. Here's where it gets.
Danielle Fishel
Here's where it gets good, doesn't it?
Ryder Strong
One of our listeners who reached out to me was my oldest and dearest friend, Ocean.
Danielle Fishel
Okay, so wait a minute. That's not. That's not what I'm arguing. That's your friend.
Ryder Strong
But he listened to the episode.
Danielle Fishel
Oh, okay.
Ryder Strong
He reached out to say, dude, I feel exactly the same way about those two specific things. And then he looked it up, and he said, it's actually two rules from two different style manuals. So actually, there's. There's the AP style, which says you should have the spaces on either side of the EM dash, but not the Chicago style. But the Chicago style says you should have spaces between your periods and your ellipses. So he's like, what's the deal with both of us having very strong feelings about these two rules? And then I was like, did we have a conversation about this in sixth grade where we both decided this, like, in our bones? And he's like, I think we must have, like. We must have, like, somewhere along the way. And then yesterday, my brother asked me to proofread an essay or to give him notes on an essay. And I noticed Shiloh also does the exact same things. And I texted him. I was like, how do you feel about spaces around the EM dash? He's like, it's important. And I'm like, how do you feel about periods during your ellipses?
Danielle Fishel
And he's.
Ryder Strong
Or he's like, do you like it when autocorrect tightens your ellipses? He's like, no, I don't feel good about that. And I'm like, yes. So it goes back to our school. We all went to the same tiny, tiny high school.
Danielle Fishel
Or is that AP style or Chicago style.
Ryder Strong
It's a blend of the two. Oh, that's the thing. It's like it's not following one style. Which means basically we've nailed it down to probably one teacher at our school at Nonesuch. Cause we all loved our one English teacher, Chris. Chris Kinney took us through.
Will Friedle
Chris, this is such a small. You could not. Mr. Something.
Ryder Strong
We called him Chris. He was only 24, you know, when we were. When we were in high school or whatever. So he probably. It was probably him marking up our papers because all three of us. So we're calling it the Nunsuch style, which is the name of our school, which, you know, tiny school. We graduated in a. I graduated in the class of 12 with ocean. But we're calling it the non such style.
Danielle Fishel
So there are 10 other people walking around.
Ryder Strong
Yes. Who are just as obsessive. And so I wrote to Shiloh, I was like, it's the non such style. And Shiloh goes. I guess none such style is more than a lack of showers and the lingering scent of weed, which is a perfect description. God. So there you have it, folks. It is now the non such style to cook. If you specifically like this where you. Don't you want your ellipses to not
Danielle Fishel
be shortened to like that spaced out ellipses?
Ryder Strong
Yes. And you know, basically I don't want to be crowded.
Danielle Fishel
We need room.
Ryder Strong
We want space. Give me space.
Danielle Fishel
Come on. Give me a bubble. I like a little bit of bubble.
Ryder Strong
We figured that it goes back to our school and you know, which goes to show something that you do you think is so personal. Like I literally thought that this was
Danielle Fishel
like just so personal.
Ryder Strong
So it was like, there's no way. This has to be. And then Ocean feels the same way and Shiloh feels the same way. So it goes to show that teachers really affect you. If you have a teacher. Without even realizing it, we absorbed this teacher's clearly preference for certain styles. And that's. That's now in our bones. Well, we're going to insist on it.
Danielle Fishel
If you would like to adopt the non such style, where can people reach out to you? What's the helpline?
Ryder Strong
I don't know.
Danielle Fishel
Let's just call it.
Ryder Strong
Just adopt it as a nonsense.
Danielle Fishel
Could you start one of those numbers again like you used to have for your road trips where we could collect messages?
Will Friedle
Call me, leave a message.
Ryder Strong
Don't we. Do we have a voice note?
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, we do. Send us your voice notes about ellipses, spaces, about the bubble method, the nonsuch method.
Will Friedle
I'd like to vote that we never talk about anything Chicago style again if it isn't a pizza pizza. Cause
Ryder Strong
no, but Chicago style pizza sucks.
Danielle Fishel
I know. Not my favorite.
Ryder Strong
It's just a different style of pizza. Dude, have you eaten, like, more than you eat more than half a piece and you're like, oh, done. Absolutely.
Will Friedle
Oh, my God, we eat so differently. Oh, my God, we eat so much.
Danielle Fishel
Cheese has to be on top. Willy nilly, sauce all over the top. Doesn't work for me.
Will Friedle
Oh, my God.
Danielle Fishel
What's. Why is there a difference between deep. Because I like some deep dish pizza, but not Chicago style pizza.
Will Friedle
Really?
Danielle Fishel
Like, yeah.
Ryder Strong
Is there a difference?
Danielle Fishel
Well, yes, because deep dish Pizza Hut pizza is still just normal pizza, but with a slightly thicker crust versus Chicago style. Isn't the sauce is on top. Right. And the cheese is underneath.
Will Friedle
You could do. Yeah, stop on the. Yeah, you can do. But we had a great restaurant right near us, Danielle, which I think is closed now, called Paoli's. Years ago that had the best deep dish pizza.
Ryder Strong
Oh, really?
Will Friedle
Oh, it was so good. Homemade sausage. It was just really great.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
No more food talk.
Danielle Fishel
No more food talk.
Ryder Strong
We're done. I tried to talk about something interesting like grammar. You guys bring it right back to.
Danielle Fishel
Sorry.
Ryder Strong
Something important like your ellipses spacing.
Will Friedle
I do want to say one thing. I want to pat myself on the back, which I like to do often. You know that.
Danielle Fishel
I love this for you.
Will Friedle
Today is my 12th year anniversary without a cigarette.
Danielle Fishel
Congratulations.
Ryder Strong
May 27th. Why did you decide?
Will Friedle
I don't know. I just picked up and quit and I haven't had it. Haven't had a puff of a cigarette for 12 years.
Ryder Strong
Good for you, dude.
Danielle Fishel
Man, I'm so proud of you.
Ryder Strong
That's huge, man.
Will Friedle
12 years?
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
That's so great.
Will Friedle
God, I miss it.
Ryder Strong
Do you really, though?
Will Friedle
I mean, I do.
Danielle Fishel
You don't.
Will Friedle
I probably don't miss the taste or the smell, but I really miss the ritual.
Ryder Strong
You don't, like, wake up and think about, like, oh, I'd love to.
Will Friedle
No, but I'll have dreams where I'm smoking and in the dream I like, wake up and I'm like, oh, my God, I started smoking. And like, I did smoking again.
Danielle Fishel
I do, too.
Will Friedle
Yeah. Because I know if I have one cigarette, I'll buy a pack and then I'm done.
Ryder Strong
Yeah.
Will Friedle
And it's like $38 for a pack of cigarettes now, too, so it's ridiculous.
Danielle Fishel
I know. I saw a great girl math thing the other day that was like, I don't smoke, but I could. And if I did, I'd be spending $4,700 a year on cigarettes if I smoked a pack a day. So my Chanel bag is free. Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Create a hypothetical and pay yourself for it.
Will Friedle
That works.
Danielle Fishel
That works. But Will, it's not a hypothetical. If you went back and you counted all the money you would have spent on cigarettes over the Last tens of 12 years, my math is going to
Ryder Strong
be I didn't buy a Chanel bag, So I have $4,700 to spend on cigarettes. So I. Exactly. I'm just going to go invest in some tobacco guys. Why not just make it multiple Bottega
Will Friedle
bags so you have more money at the end of the day. So it's like I just save 50 grand. I'm going to go buy something like that yet. No, I, I miss it.
Ryder Strong
Good for you, man.
Danielle Fishel
Good. Congratulations. What are you going to do to celebrate? Have a cigarette.
Will Friedle
I'm going to have a cigarette. You know, you should do, you should
Ryder Strong
go get candy cigarettes. You should go get bubble gum had
Will Friedle
candy cigarettes as a little kid, and I swear to God that that helped, that made me transition into regular smoke.
Ryder Strong
I bet it was the actual cigarettes you smoked as a little kid.
Danielle Fishel
Well, that too.
Will Friedle
But, but the, the, the ones that were bubble gum, you could blow out the, like the smoke, it was the sugar. I mean, that' for a kid. Come on.
Danielle Fishel
No, I know.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel

Welcome to another episode recap. It is season seven, episode 20, as time goes By. Guys, it's a time travel episode.
Ryder Strong
Yeah, we need more of these.
Danielle Fishel
It was originally aired April 7, the year 2000. The episode's title and the name of the cafe are homages to 1942's Casablanca. The synopsis, When Topanga is stressed out, she Transports to a 1940s black and white cafe where she doesn't remember anything about. About her past and learns how to be less uptight. It was directed by Steve's having a baby. Steve Haber. It is his first episode of television ever. He would go on to direct over 30 episodes of all that. Almost 30 Drake and Josh episodes, more than a dozen Zoe 101s, 22 victorious, and 35 Henry dangers. All because of us.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Is it 35 Henry dangers?
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. Wow.
Ryder Strong
Good for him. Oh, my God.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. It was written by Erica Montalfo and there are no guest stars. So shall we talk about our. Our overall thoughts?
Will Friedle
I'll start. I absolutely love this episode.
Ryder Strong
Oh, fun.
Will Friedle
I did. I thought it was fun. It was ridiculous. We were all putting on funny voices. It made no sense. It was. I remember us having. Feeling very bad for Steve this week because it was a ton of work, but I remember us really having fun with it and just enjoying the stupidity. And I just let myself go for 22 minutes, and I thought it was great. And I got to work with you more, Danielle, which is very rare. So. No, when you think of the overall message of the actual episode, it's really weird and creepy and kind of awful. And I just didn't care.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, okay.
Ryder Strong
Yeah.
Will Friedle
I just didn't.
Ryder Strong
Didn't care about the episode. I was just like, this is not. This is not clever enough for me. Like. Like, I don't. I don't know. First of all, I've never seen Casablanca ever. Ever.
Danielle Fishel
Me neither.
Ryder Strong
It's one of those, you know, I have a lot of coals gaping holes in. In my movie. Dom especially. And it's one of those, like, I know I will love it. I know I'll eventually watch it, and. But I just. I've absorbed it through pop culture, but I've never seen it. But also, I. I don't think that this is much of a. Because Casablanca is not a noir with a detective, right?
Will Friedle
No.
Ryder Strong
So really gets away from the Casablanca stuff really quickly and becomes like a noir thing.
Will Friedle
I don't know.
Ryder Strong
I just didn't understand it. I didn't find it that clever or funny. I think you were funny, Will. Everybody's fine. I just didn't care. I just was like, this is not for me. Not for me, not my style. And I could tell that I was uncomfortable when I was watching my own performance. I'm like, I'm glad I'm a small part in this because I was not
Danielle Fishel
having fun, but I do absolutely remember having fun this week, especially the scenes that I got to do with Will. We had. We did just have a lot of fun together, and I enjoyed that. I. I am. I'm really confused. And I guess it all, like, when I look back on my feelings that I had this season of the show, I guess it ties in, but, like, I didn't realize they. Someone kind of just aggressively disliked me.
Ryder Strong
Hated.
Will Friedle
Wanted you dead.
Ryder Strong
Just really. It was so true. And the fact that it turns out that you're the problem that Topanga needs to learn the lesson was very hard to take. I was like, wait, that's where this is going? Yeah.
Will Friedle
Cory.
Ryder Strong
Well, no, in all fairness, you need
Will Friedle
to chill the out.
Ryder Strong
Cory, you already said.
Will Friedle
Wait a second. You're. Corey said he only occasionally thought about killing you.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Will Friedle
So I don't think it should be that big a deal. I mean, come on.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, it was really disturbing. You know what's funny is that that is the feeling more than in other episodes where we maybe have take issue or umbrance with something that feels like, you know, if you really think about it, that that's really unfair and that's sexist or whatever. I've never actually felt. I don't think misogyny, the true, like,
Will Friedle
hatred, blatant hatred of women.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
You haven't.
Danielle Fishel
I don't know, because I think it's
Ryder Strong
all throughout the show.
Danielle Fishel
I mean, I find. I find there to be. Yeah. And maybe you're right. Maybe. But I did. I felt. I think I felt it more obviously in this episode than in others. And maybe it's only because I kind of started to feel it a little bit this season more strongly that then with this episode, it really feels like, whoo, this has been a lot of misogyny this season, so maybe that's it. And that some of the other moments have been softened by how blatant this one is. But I was really, like, I finished the episode and I thought, man, there were parts of this romp. This, you know, falling into a vortex and funny for the sake of being funny moment that I could. Would have loved to have left the episode with thinking like, that was. That was funny. That was cute. That was fun. And instead, I was just, like, a little sad.
Will Friedle
I was like, well, it was one of those things where the initial idea and the overall quote, unquote idea is a good one. Topanga needs to relax for herself. Not for Corey, for herself. She's too uptight when it comes to work. And sometimes you just need to let go and watch cartoons. Topanga. Okay, that's a fun idea. And to get that, she gets sucked into a vortex where it's a world where everybody's just let go, and now you're trapped there. And so. Okay, good concept. And then at the end, where it was like, the whole speech with Corey, that's when I was like, all right, I'm gonna pretend I'm not seeing this part. I'm just gonna pretend that this didn't happen. And it's still just us putting on fun accents and hearing Ben go, I don't believe it. I don't believe it. And I was like, I'm just gonna let go of all that. And then we shut off the episode and sitting with Susan, and we were talking about it where it's like, yeah, this is like. He literally stands over her going, I only occasionally wanted to kill her. And it's like, oh, wow. Wow.
Danielle Fishel
I know.
Will Friedle
So, yeah, it took a. It took a hard turn, but I just ignored that turn and enjoyed the black and white and everyone putting on accents and having fun. And I got to wear a gun. And I was like, great. Done. Sold.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Will Friedle
So, yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Well, let's jump into our recap. We start at a crime scene. We open in a noir style, black and white. A dead victim, covered in a sheet, lies on the floor, surrounded by onlookers and detectives. One officer kneels down near the body and writes on a notepad. Eric narrates, mimicking the voice of a private eye from an old crime drama. It was one of those nights. You do it will say, it was one of those nights.
Will Friedle
It was one of those nights.
Danielle Fishel
No, not so Batman.
Will Friedle
Yeah. No, to me, that's Batman. No, Batman's down here. It's one of those nights.
Ryder Strong
It was one of those nights. Yeah. You gotta be more.
Will Friedle
You need trigger words. There's trigger words as a.
Danielle Fishel
You know, the kind. Like day, but darker.
Will Friedle
Like day, but darker. Yeah. No, I gotta. I'd have to. Oh, because he's. Wait, I'm a gumshoe.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, there you go.
Will Friedle
Yeah, that's what he is. I'm a gumshoe. Please. Like day, but darker.
Danielle Fishel
Cute. Yeah, I've had them before. Except tonight someone was dead. Now, it was my job to catch a murderer, And believe me, there were plenty of suspects. Not him, not her. That guy next to her. The camera pans to people we recognize. Rachel, Jack, Angela, Sean, Mr. Feeney. These are the suspects. All dressed for the 1940s time period. I will speak for myself. I so remember the wardrobe for this week. I'm sure. And loved it. Do you guys remember the wardrobe fittings or the discussions about wardrobe or anything? I mean, right? Or you're dressed like a barkeep. So you're kind of just in a white button up shirt.
Ryder Strong
I actually thought I looked good this way. I was like, it was great. Yeah. But I don't. I mean, I probably hated it because I, you know, didn't like wardrobe or dealing with clothing. But in retrospect, I'm like, Yeah, I mean, 1950s and 19 whatever. 20s, 30s, what is it, 40s?
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, 40s.
Will Friedle
40s.
Danielle Fishel
These are good looks for us.
Ryder Strong
Yeah.
Will Friedle
You especially. Danielle, There's a real good chance that you were born into the wrong decade. Cause you do settle into that 40s. I think we did it with the 40s and the 50s. No, we did it with the war. When you're back there. Yeah, you can rock a 40s look pretty well.
Danielle Fishel
I can. Thank you.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. I love it. I loved it. I loved the hair. I loved the makeup, the dark lips.
Ryder Strong
I also, I noticed just. I love seeing the extras. Everybody looks so cool with their hair and. Yeah, it's great.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, it was really great. And of course, the guy with the hat, it's Feeny in a fez cap. We see Detective Eric also taking notes now, looking straight at the camera. Not me. I'm the guy talking. Eric pulls Mr. Feeny aside. So what's your story, Fez head? Fez head. Feeny responds. Toothpick and mouth. No free words in this town. Flat foot. But talk ain't cheap. Eric handsome. Some cash. And Feeny isn't impressed. But apparently you are. Detective Eric sighs. Enough of the flattery, Fez Head. I already like you. Come on, talk.
Will Friedle
So it was just fun. So we're having fun with that. That's the thing, is I got to have just a ton of fun this week. Yeah, just a ton of fun this week. All the way.
Danielle Fishel
You got to. Yeah, you got to really tiptoe around.
Will Friedle
He's a cartoon character.
Danielle Fishel
Careful.
Will Friedle
Playing of yeah, it was awesome.
Danielle Fishel
She got in the way. Feeny explains Eric needs more. In the way of what? You're the detective. Figure it out. Fez head. Feeny says before walking away. Eric returns to narrating. He had a point. Maybe that's why he wore a hat. But not only did I have to find out who killed her and why, I also had to figure out who she was. Does that mean that he has a point on the top of his head and he's wearing a hat to cover it? Or do those two things not. Is it. Is that the funny that they don't really.
Will Friedle
Yeah, yeah. Funny words.
Ryder Strong
Funny words in a funny order.
Will Friedle
In a funny words said in a
Danielle Fishel
funny voice by a funny man. Then Eric bends down to the dead body and carefully pulls back the sheet. It's a dolled up Topanga.
Ryder Strong
Topanga.
Danielle Fishel
She's dead. And then we're in Cory and Topanga's apartment. It's now in color. The present day. Topanga is sitting at their table doing work while Cory is on the couch watching tv, laughing maniacally. Shoving.
Ryder Strong
Bringing back the popcorn.
Danielle Fishel
It's bringing back the David Combs reopen.
Ryder Strong
David Combs popcorn everywhere.
Danielle Fishel
Oh. Shoving popcorn down his gullet, mostly missing. And having it fall all over his shirt and the floor. Which how people could ever just let things fall and don't pick it up immediately.
Will Friedle
I was fine with some of the falling. When you then sat down on the couch on the popcorn, I was like, I can't do it. I can't do it on the popcorn.
Danielle Fishel
Oh, it killed me. Oh, my gosh. I know. Oh, it killed me. Topanga can't focus. She angrily stares at Corey. Something wrong? He asks. She explains, cory, you and I have the exact same paper due tomorrow. How is it that I'm sitting here studying and you're sitting there watching that stupid coyote fall into the Grand Canyon? Again, Corey takes this personally. I want to make sure he's going to be all right. He's always all right. Topanga explains. Cory isn't sold. What if this is the one time he dies? Topanga has had enough and she gets up to clean. How can you live like this? Corey retorts. You're always prepared. You're always ready. I hate ready. He tells her.
Will Friedle
I'm sorry. There are so many Ben Isms in this one. Even that. What if this is the one time he does.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, what if this is the one time he does?
Will Friedle
So bad.
Danielle Fishel
I know. Again, another person who's just having a lot of fun.
Will Friedle
Yep.
Danielle Fishel
And just has kind of stopped caring in a. In the best way possible, maybe.
Will Friedle
Like I. I'm gonna be honest, though, until rewatching it, I don't think I got 90% of the underlying themes that we talk about on Pop Meets World when I actually read the scripts.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
What do you mean?
Will Friedle
Meaning, like the misogyny we're seeing or the way, you know, things that things that we're. I'm noticing now, I never read. Like, I would never have read this script at 22, whatever I was and been like, God, that's weird. Why is it Topanga's fault? Like, I know that would never have cut. The way I was reading the scripts was like, oh, my God, this is so funny. Or I get to do voices or I get to do this stuff. So the idea of what the stories were never really.
Ryder Strong
But note sessions were always about that, like, wasn't it?
Will Friedle
I checked out by that point. I never thought.
Ryder Strong
I don't know. I think I feel like part of the reason. I mean, the irony is that part of the reason I feel equipped to analyze Boy Meets World and take it so seriously is because of Michael's note sessions where he was basically asking. He was, you know, working through out loud and performatively, working through, like, the importance of our storytelling and, like, why it matters and why it was right.
Will Friedle
But we weren't clapping back, going, wait a second. Why is this. Why is this Topanga's fault?
Ryder Strong
Like, that.
Will Friedle
That was never a conversation we were having at the time.
Ryder Strong
There were. Remember when, like, Ben. We talked about Ben not wanting to hit the teacher.
Will Friedle
That was the one time I can remember it is. Is Ben not saying, I, Corey wouldn't hit Fred's tea? Fred's teacher?
Ryder Strong
Yeah. No. I feel like there was. There was always some. I mean, you. I mean, I think you're right. You probably didn't, and I didn't that often either. But I feel like it was just. There was a. Somebody came on early on in this podcast and said that, like, you know, Michael looked at it as a moral obligation to tell stories that were important and valuable. And I definitely felt that, like, I was always aware that we were doing.
Will Friedle
But I feel like the. I feel like the morality that he was talking about is not necessarily the morality that made it onto the shows, is what I'm saying. In his mind, there was a morality, maybe that. Then when I go back and look at. I'm like, wow, some of these episodes are really either dark or, as Danielle was saying, hints of misogyny. Sometimes blatant misogyny. And this was stuff that I didn't. Speaking for myself personally, as I was reading the scripts, none of that ever came into my head. I've never read a script and been like, my God, why is Topanga to blame for this? I think I was reading it as, ooh, I get to do fun stuff this week. So seeing it back again, I was Never cognizant of any of this stuff as we were shooting.
Danielle Fishel
I will take it one step further and say I actually completely agreed with the perspective at the time. I remember. And now it makes me, you know, sick to my stomach to think about it. But I remember, I remember thinking, ugh, Topanga's the worst. Topanga. Why is she? Why is she like that? Why is she? Why? Ew. Like, I remember thinking the same thing. This. Thank God they're giving us an episode where Topanga gets told that she's, you know, she's gonna. Someone's gonna murder her if she does. I truly agreed with the perspective.
Ryder Strong
Right. See, I, I don't think I was. I don't think I was conscious enough to be like, like that specific about. But in general, I remember my overwhelming feeling being that, that the writers and Michael were very old fashioned and out of touch. Like, that's my overwhelming feeling was like, oh, we're teaching kids lessons, we're doing these sort of big, heavy life lessons. And I often felt like the worldview was sort of limited, but I didn't. I don't know if I could have articulated why or like been like, you know, the way he treats women is. I don't think I would have been able to say that. But I remember feeling like this doesn't feel like it's the way I feel about the world. Like, I feel like this is the way an older generation feels about the world. And we're playing out as characters a sort of fantasy version of what the ideal childhood would be. And the idea. And so I remember feeling like it's hokey and outdated. Like that was my sense. Now I look at it and I go, it's hokey, outdated, and at times pretty damaging, you know, and pretty, you know, just limited, you know, and potentially not great to replicate. But, you know, I think viewers are critical enough to like, hopefully be able to see those things for how they, you know, it was a TV show, it was a fictional world, everything was a choice, everything was made up. Everything, I think reflected a worldview that was a baby boomer worldview in the 90s, you know.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, it's just funny too thinking about that. Like our different POVs, like you writer, were the type of teenager that was very self aware of the differences between the older generation and what they thought versus my generation and how we are gonna change the world and how we're gonn to do things differently. Will's perspective and everything Will cared about was about entertaining and comedy. And so Will looked at A script and didn't think, what's the theme of the week that we're trying to sell to the children? His. His thing is, where's the funny? How can this be funnier? Where can I push the envelope here? What can I do? And for me, as a teenager who was very relationship focused and very much of the mindset before I knew better was very much of the mindset of my entire goal as a young woman is to be the perfect embodiment of what men want. I got these scripts and read them through the lens of, yeah, men don't like it when you nag at them about their stuff. Let him watch his show if he wants. What's the big deal? And so I then accepted the misogynistic worldview as being like, do better. Do better, Topanga.
Will Friedle
Right, right.
Danielle Fishel
And so it's just. It's like I see it all now with this much time and space and distance that I can look back at us as young kids and see. I never saw it through writer's lens. I also never really saw it through, you know, Will's lens because I wasn't given that, you know, too many opportunities to really lean into comedy or. But. But you were. So we all had our own different POV. And it's just funny how 30 years later, US talking about it, we all can see the si. We can kind of see things the same even still with our own different POVs and maybe feeling about it to different strengths. Like, you know, it's on a spectrum, but we all see kind of the same thing. I don't know is it's interesting.
Will Friedle
I wonder if we had had some of these conversations, the three of us, back in the day on the set, if we ever would have come to the same conclusion and gone to Michael or the writers and been like, you know, we've been talking about this episode. Here's what we don't like but remember. And I still don't think we would have.
Danielle Fishel
Well, I think we. We would have. Our conversation probably would have been more on, this isn't cool. Like, we're overthinking it. It's a tv. Like, we would. We. Because we did all have that mentality of, like, caring too much.
Will Friedle
Was lame.
Danielle Fishel
Was lame.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
And it wasn't supposed. It was like we were all. We were all acting like everything came effortlessly to us that there wasn't. And it's so funny because we had people like Jeff McCracken, who was the op. The antithesis of effortless. It was actually so much effort and thought and discussion that then it looked effortless by the because you would really settled in with exactly what it is. But we didn't want to show that part. We didn't want to show the work. We just wanted to be at the finish line and not having anyone seen the process of getting there or even having to do a process to get there.
Ryder Strong
God. So strange.
Will Friedle
We should do a podcast where we just look back and watch the show
Ryder Strong
and talk about it because I think
Will Friedle
it'd be a good idea.
Ryder Strong
Yeah, we probably have some insights.
Danielle Fishel

He tells her to stop picking up his popcorn and he grabs her hands. Now listen, you've worked very hard tonight. You deserve a little break. Now I want you to sit here, just sit with Corey, relax a little, and we're going to watch some nice quality animation. I love that he doesn't even offer to. What. What would you. If you were gonna relax, what would you like to watch?
Ryder Strong
Oh yeah, exactly.
Danielle Fishel
Doesn't even, doesn't even like acknowledge that maybe cartoons aren't her thing. That's okay. But what would you. Let's put on something you want. No. And even at the end, have a massage. Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Like take a walk around the block.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Listen to some soothing music, Anything. No, you gotta do what I want to do on the couch, Corey.
Danielle Fishel
Topanga says. Corey, Topanga says, forced onto the couch. We are married now. We're adults. We have to be responsible. Responsibility is not popcorn or cartoons. Corey mocks Topanga, treading into Cartman land. Responsibility. It's not popcorn or cartoons. Topanga's now riled up and frankly, you could use a bit of stress in your life. She cleans herself off. The popcorn is everywhere. Oh, you think so? Corey wonders. You think I should make everyone nuts by being a stressed out control freak until everyone wants to kill me? Topanga's interest is piqued. You want to kill me? No, Corey says, a bit calmer. I'm just talking about, you know, everyone that knows you. Topanga walks to her teakettle and Corey continues. Look, Topanga, life is just too short for this, okay? And the difference between you and me is that me knows that. Topanga looks at him, disgusted. Did you just use me as the subject of a sentence? Corey is at his wit's end and says, I don't believe it.
Will Friedle
I don't believe it.
Danielle Fishel
I don't believe.
Will Friedle
Another. Just total Ben is a Ben.
Danielle Fishel
I don't believe it. Nothing used to be able to make me laugh faster than him saying, I don't believe it.
Will Friedle
I don't believe.
Danielle Fishel
I don't believe it. Remember when he used to do it so under his breath? Yeah.
Ryder Strong
Yeah. Well, he kind of does it in this one. Like he's slipping it in.
Danielle Fishel
It's like he's.
Ryder Strong
He's trying. He's hoping that nobody will notice. And yeah, mostly I don't think people do because, like, why?
Danielle Fishel
No one knows what it is. It's. Yeah. I mean, Jensen thought it was a Desi Arnaz impression.
Will Friedle
All of us are just officially doing random funny voices at times, trying to make each other laugh, and we're riding out the series.
Danielle Fishel
Yes, we are. He sits back down on the popcorn infested couch. Come on, relax. Take a little time out. Topanga continues to clean. Corey, this is life. You can't take a time out from life. Because something bad happens doesn't mean you can escape into a fantasy world. What's the bad that happened? The fight? Are we. Are we thinking about the episode? Are we talking about the shove from the episode before? Because why does she say that?
Ryder Strong
That's a good question.
Will Friedle
Wait, read the line again.
Danielle Fishel
She says, corey, this is life. You can't take a time out from life just. Just because something bad happens doesn't mean you can escape into a fantasy world. Is it the homework? The paperwork?
Will Friedle
I think it's the homework that she's talking about is the studying, which doesn't.
Ryder Strong
It's not bad.
Danielle Fishel
I mean, that's not bad. That's just.
Will Friedle
No, it's just something bad happened.
Ryder Strong
We got assigned a paper. I know.
Danielle Fishel
That's why I'm like, is she. Is it. Is it a callback to the week before the. The Brotherly Shove episode? I don't know. I really am not sure. I don't.
Will Friedle
Yeah, good question.
Danielle Fishel
Corey returns to hysterically laughing at the tv. Topanga has had enough. Fine. You want me to relax, I'll relax. Corey throws his hands up in excitement. That's my girl. She beelines to the closet for more cleaning. Corey breaks the news. Cleaning is not relaxation. Topanga responds, it's better than watching a duck with a speech impediment. I think the only thing. One of the only things I remember very vividly about this week is that I, for whatever reason, had the hardest time saying the word impediment.
Will Friedle
Delicious.
Danielle Fishel
I couldn't do it. I was like, better than watching a duck effort. It was like, truly. I think I did. I think I had to do it ten times.
Will Friedle
Oh, the.
Danielle Fishel
When you go back and listen to it, I think it sounds weird. Even in the take they used, I'm not happy with it.
Ryder Strong
It's funny as hell.
Danielle Fishel
Yes. Speech impediment. I can't say speech impediment.
Ryder Strong
That is funny, man.
Danielle Fishel
Now I've perfected it. But I wasn't quite the talker I was back. I wasn't. Corey is offended. Daffy is doing the best he can with what he has. All right. Topanga yells back. He's an idiot. Cory cackles again. And Topanga finds something in the back of the closet. This is a humongous.
Will Friedle
It's bigger than most of the apartment. This whole apartment, from the bedroom to the now the living room to now this closet.
Ryder Strong
This is. Yeah.
Will Friedle
You didn't want to live there. Topanga's like, I couldn't see myself in this 1400 square foot. Like, my God.
Danielle Fishel
I know. This is huge also. Yeah, the closet. I don't know why we needed it to be that big. I guess camp. Just the angle.
Will Friedle
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just so we could sneak in and out. Don't you remember how they got us in and out? Well, get ready to say it. How they got us in and out of the hole.
Danielle Fishel
No, how'd we get in the hole?
Will Friedle
They opened the thing and then there's. All the crew members were waiting to grab our arms, and they were, like, yanking us through that. That thing. That's why your legs get pulled through so fast.
Danielle Fishel
But why were. Why were our legs able to be straight? Like, was there.
Will Friedle
Because it was just a platform ended and like that. That wall ended, and there were people there to just pull us out on this flat thing that, like, it wasn't a roller, but it, like, yanked out of the. Out of the hole.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, it felt a little like wizard of Oz to me. You know, there was, like, the little feet under the. Yeah.
Will Friedle
Do you know if you listen to this episode of Boy Meets World and you start Dark side of the Moon at exactly the right time, it syncs up. They line up perfectly.
Danielle Fishel
Wow. Corey is oblivious, still watching the TV and laughing like a psychopath. Topanga opens the door and looks around. You know those continuum vortex things we're studying in physics?
Ryder Strong
Oh, convenient.
Will Friedle
Isn't that cool? At least it's not the Civil War. Still. My God.
Ryder Strong
Maybe just mentioned that it was. They were taking physics just a little bit before this.
Danielle Fishel
No. Writer saying is, tell don't show. Everyone knows that tell.
Will Friedle
Why wasn't she worrying about working on her physics paper at the beginning? It's so easy to be like, I'm working on a physics paper.
Ryder Strong
Exactly, because that's in a paper. It would be a physics test or something. Yeah, whatever.
Will Friedle
You learn. You learny guy. Writer. I don't know.
Ryder Strong
God.
Danielle Fishel
Well, this kind of looks like one. I wonder what's behind. And then Topanga gets sucked into the hole. It says doorway, but I thought I'd go with hole.
Will Friedle
Thank you.
Ryder Strong
Time hole. A time hole. We don't get the, like, tie dye swirl this time.
Danielle Fishel
Not even a black and white swirl. Not nothing. Corey just shakes his popcorn bowl mindlessly. Topanga, this popcorn needs salt. Just as she's getting sucked into a vortex, he's yelling at her to add salt to his popcorn.
Ryder Strong
Well, she's got to learn her lesson.
Will Friedle
It's marriage.
Ryder Strong
She's got to learn to chill out.
Danielle Fishel
Now we're in a black, and we're in the black and white alternative world. Topanga teleports into a phone booth. Now with a wardrobe, glam, and hairstyle Perfect for the 40s, but she is in color. Moody's saxophone plays as she looks around confused, and stumbles into Rory's Shangri La Cat.
Will Friedle
Well, I love before. Even before that, though.
Ryder Strong
So you.
Will Friedle
You. You show up in the phone booth, and obviously it's an effect that has to be done. So I'm holding. No, you really.
Ryder Strong
You really transformed through a time space continuum.
Will Friedle
So we have to hold while we're there. And so if you pause it at the right time, right as you're materializing, the extra who. The. The background actor who's playing the police officer is just standing there. And so somebody obviously. Well, you know, kind of went like, all right, and now you're here. And now the guy starts walking. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it was like. It was very kind of okay that they. They tried to smooth it out, but it didn't quite work.
Danielle Fishel
Didn't quite land.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Moody saxophone music plays as she looks around confused, and stumbles into Rory Shangri La Cafe. As she exits the phone booth, she transfers to black and white. Inside, Jack is playing the piano and Amy is sitting on top of it, singing. Detective Eric narrates again, describing the joint as a place where you check your problems at the door. People come here for all different reasons, but stay for just one to forget Ella Fitzgerald Kennedy. He continues as the camera pans to. Amy used to sing with Sinatra.
Will Friedle
Sinatra.
Danielle Fishel
I loved all of these. This was very funny to me. The guy tickling the ivories is Weehawking Willie. The camera pans to Jack, direct descendant of Beethoven. Harry Beethoven.
Will Friedle
I remember how nervous Matt was this week because he knew he had to sing. I know he was super nervous this week. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
And he's got such a great voice.
Ryder Strong
Incredible voice.
Will Friedle
Incredible voice. But he. And then he kind of. He wasn't. He didn't sing for us during rehearsal. He was always like, I'll do it on the night. I'll do it on the night. And then he sung and, like, everyone went nuts because he was like.
Ryder Strong
But they still cut away from him, which was really weird.
Will Friedle
Which is very strange. He. Yeah, but it was great.
Danielle Fishel
I know. Very odd. I feel like maybe it was adr.
Ryder Strong
It was. I think so. I think he recorded it separately. But it's just so weird that they.
Will Friedle
Well, no, the first part. The first part was he sung there. Because I distinctly remember standing right there as he's singing it to me. That was his. This world's gonna Run Amok. He sung that. So maybe they re recorded it. But he sung that live. And that was the version that they used. I distinctly remember that going like, oh, my. Because I hadn't heard it. It was like, oh, he's doing, like, all these runs. And. Yeah, it was crazy. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Fez Head and Costello, they're always together. It's Feeny and a tiny Mustached Alan. Oh my gosh. They're just sitting in the corner of the cafe playing poker. Eric continues, People talk. Allan tells his buddy in a wild high pitched voice that I love. I, I just kept waiting for every opportunity for him.
Will Friedle
Well, these are Casablanca characters. Characters. These are straight up Fez Head and this guy. These are all straight from Casablanca.
Danielle Fishel
Oh, God, I love it. Hey, move away from me, Fez Head. People are tacking. He's got the mustache.
Will Friedle
He's doing this the whole time.
Danielle Fishel
So good. Fez Head. Feeny responds, don't flatter yourself, Gertrude. Angela is a waitress in the cafe. She sashays out holding coffee on a tray. She makes her way to a confused Topanga standing next to the piano.
Ryder Strong
Did coffee pot seem out of time period?
Danielle Fishel
It seems like a 1993 coffee pot
Ryder Strong
because I believe there's plastic on it. I was like, this does not seem right for the 1940s. It was a very weird choice. I was like, we couldn't get like a metal coffee pot or just, you
Danielle Fishel
know what, I wonder if all week it was booze and.
Ryder Strong
No, because I pour booze.
Danielle Fishel
I know, but then you hand, Then you pour me a cup of coffee. You don't drink it. You pour me a cup of coffee. So I wonder if all week it was like, you know, and then we got to taping and there was a note like, yeah. And then it was just like, quick, grab a coffee pot, you know.
Will Friedle
Yeah, yeah.
Ryder Strong
It's really weird because like, otherwise the props and the wardrobe, everything is so cool. And it's a weird choice to have like a very contemporary coffee pot.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, yeah. And I, I feel like the conversation around, how old are they? Are they like, is it. Can they be serving alcohol? Like, you know, it is weird that you do still get to pour, which is funny. Angela, who sounds a lot like Betty Boop, says to the fish out of water, ah, crazy mixed up. Kid, you look lost. That's Angel. Eric narrates. Nuff said. Hi, I'm Angel. Nuff said. Angela repeats, how about a cup of joe? Topanga says she'd love one, but she doesn't seem to have any money. Out of nowhere, Sean pops out from behind the bar. The bartender yells out, nobody needs money here, kid. This is Rory Shangri La. Eric cuts back in. Meet Isaac Goodshot. Kelly walked into this place yesterday and never left. I like the yesterday reference. Sean is now cluelessly pouring a shot for so long, the alcohol is overflowing onto the bar.
Will Friedle
When Topanga walks up, tapping the top of the bottle. Is what made that joke. Yeah, as it's still coming out.
Ryder Strong
You're still trying to dump it.
Will Friedle
Great.
Danielle Fishel
Everybody seems so carefree here. So relaxed. Relaxed. Bartender Sean Isaac smiles and hands her a coffee. Well, you can be too. Forget your troubles Come on, get happy Weehawk and Willie loves that. Forget your troubles Come on, get happy. That could be a song. Then he shakes his head. Nah. Bartender Sean says, if you're looking for a job, angel could sure use some help around here with that. Angela drops a platter and breaks some coffee cups. She giggles without a care in the world. There I go again. Isaac shrugs. She's the worst waitress I've ever seen, but we all love her for that. So what are you running from, sister? Topanga's confused. What do you mean? Well, he says, everyone that comes to Rory's is running away from something or trying to find something. Usually themselves. She's even more confused now. I don't know who I am or why I'm even here. No one does and no one has to, he says reassuringly. All that matters is that we are here. Okay?
Ryder Strong
Okay. There's no point of story or reason or rationale. This is just a fantasy sequence you don't have to take seriously. So don't worry about it. We're going to speak thematically for the rest of the episode. Everything out of our mouths is serving the theme. We're just here for themes and gags. See over there? That's Gaggy McGaggerson. His joke is gonna be that he makes songs out of up that end
Danielle Fishel
up being hits, but he doesn't take them.
Ryder Strong
The gag over here is that she's a bad waitress. Gag over here is she's pretty and done. Okay.
Danielle Fishel
Then in a white suit and bow tie, Corey appears at the door. Is everybody happy?
Ryder Strong
Everything you need to know about his character. That's one line.
Will Friedle
He even says, what do you mean, what do I do? I'm a dandy.
Danielle Fishel
All the patrons are ecstatic to see him. They all start chanting his name.
Will Friedle
Rory. Rory.
Danielle Fishel
Topanga is intrigued. That's Rory. Eric narrates. He owns this place and everything in it, but he doesn't own her yet. He's soon to own her.
Will Friedle
Oh yeah.
Ryder Strong
All it takes is marriage and then he owns her.
Will Friedle
He runs the place. And you, you were intrigued by his power instantly. I love that.
Danielle Fishel
Your character, by the way, your gumsho, is a little Ricky. It's like you did.
Will Friedle
It's a little Ricky voice a little bit.
Danielle Fishel
Rory signs an autograph and then walks right up To Topanga. Where have you been all my life, baby? He hands her the rose from his pocket square. I don't know, she calmly states. Corey is very curious. So who are you really and where are you from? What did you do and what do you think? Topanga, still confused, responds, I don't know who I am or even why I'm here. Corey slash Rory turns to the bar and snaps his fingers. I know someone who can help. Detective Eric. Narration returns that's where I come in. I'm the local gumshoe. We see him now in his office, sleeping in his chair, feet on the desk. That's gum on my shoe.
Will Friedle
On my shoe.
Danielle Fishel
Rachel is his receptionist, sitting on the table next to him, filing her nails. She takes some gum out of her mouth and sticks it to his other shoe. Eric chimes in, more gum. Rachel yells out, someone's here to see ya. Gumshoe abruptly wakes up and asks, what do you mean, a case? Rachel taps his nose with her nail file. No, silly, a poison. She walks to the door in a slow strut. Gumshoe, Eric notes, beauty and no brains. A dangerous combination. I'm talking about me. When Rachel exits, Topanga enters. Is this a bad time? She asks, still narrating Gumshoe, Eric says, I had a feeling that if it wasn't yet, it was gonna be. Gonna be what? Topanga asks. He stands up, concerned. What? Topanga explains. Well, I, I just heard you say. Eric cuts her off. No, I didn't. Topanga is surprised. But I heard you. Eric, Nary says, can we just take a moment?
Ryder Strong
Where does this episode come from? Like you have four episodes left in all of Boy Meets World. You know, the show is ending and like I, I, I actually like do appreciate the time travel episodes. Like I think that they're kind of fun and like, yeah, it's a cool like little element, but like what a weird choice for our show to make.
Will Friedle
I told you last time we talked about this, I think we wanted to hit every possible trope. We did a drama, we did a straight up wacky comedy. Now there's a Time Trapple episode. I mean, I think we wanted to like hit all of them one last time.
Ryder Strong
We did a time travel episode already, right? Let's just go back and do Boy Meets World. The most Boy Meets world we can. I guess that makes sense. It just seems so weird considering how like self important the last episode was. And of course, you know, Brave New World, the two parter that ends the show. Well, so all we have, we have three left Right. We have Angela's Ashes, which is wrapping up Angela and Sean's storyline, which is crazy and, like, big. And then the two final episodes to send us to. End of the show. This is such a weird one to throw in this late. I don't know, but it's just like I'm sitting here going like, oh, this is like, this is the last time we're gonna be recapping a show. We're getting to the end of our recaps, and I'm getting emotional and nostalgic and sad. I can't imagine what we were feeling back then. And yet to do this episode right. What a choice. What a choice.
Danielle Fishel
I know. Also, it would feel less weird if my memory of it was, oh, well, we actually did it at the very beginning of the season, and they just kept bumping it. And it just so happened that they aired it way late. But, like, nope, this is where it fell. It fell right here at the end of the season. And we do. I remember so much feeling so bad for Hafer. It was such a big undertaking.
Will Friedle
I remember us being there very late into the night, too, which we hadn't done in a really long time. You know, that was like old school, where it's midnight and the audience is gone, and we're still shooting stuff. I mean, that I distinctly remember.
Ryder Strong
I think I'm gonna throw this out there. I think season seven is the season of Eric, and I think. I think they were so stoked on you Will and your ability to do everything that they just went everywhere they could. You know, it was just like, let's go crazy with season seven. And that's why I think season seven is kind of somewhat of a mess. But I also think that. I think their guiding principle was, what can we have Eric do? That would be so funny. Yes, dude.
Will Friedle
I think it's Cory and Topanga.
Ryder Strong
Think about that. That whole episode was basically to reground Eric or to give Eric a real character again to try. And it just seems like you were. Your comedic abilities were what they cared about more than anything.
Danielle Fishel
That is true.
Will Friedle
And I think Cory and Topanga, because they made the.
Ryder Strong
I agree.
Will Friedle
They tried the married couple. I mean, it was like. But again, they did it seamlessly to the point where we've talked about this. When we started this rewatch, by season five, we were like, danielle, are you on the show? And by now we're like, this was. I can see why everybody remembers Cory and Topang Cory. That's what the show's about.
Ryder Strong
Right?
Will Friedle
So, yeah, I Mean, they definitely.
Ryder Strong
I would just say it's not as successful. Like, the Cor is so hit or miss for me, you know, it's like you have the. I mean, I guess that's true. I guess that's true.
Will Friedle
And there's been almost no Sean stuff this season.
Ryder Strong
It seems like. No, no, I think they gave up on me. I mean, besides the angel. Well, because season six really didn't work. Like, the Angela. The self seriousness of the Angela and Shawn's angst just sucked. It's like. And I think the second you put Sean in college and you made him sort of like, okay and cool, like, who cares? This guy's so uninteresting, you know, like, he was so much better when Sean was struggling in school, struggling in his family. That made him an interesting character. The second you made him, like, okay, his dad's dead and now he's just okay living, you know, it's like, do
Will Friedle
you think there was a conversation on any level, anywhere in the room of them going, okay, guys, writers, check this out. We can tell that Ryder's checked out. Let's not write to Sean because Ryder is just not here anymore.
Ryder Strong
Probably. Probably. Yeah. Which is too bad, you know, like. And that's on me, you know, Like, I, I, if, If I had brought some comedy or like, I, you know, but they never. No one ever talked to me. No one ever said, like, what you're, you know, I never felt any of that, which is. But I think in retrospect, if somebody, if a director or Michael or anybody had pulled me aside and been like, what do you want to do? Like, you know what? I, I probably would have given some input and, like, been more invested in the show, but I think it was like, ah, writers going to college. Let's just. Yeah, let's just keep Sean here. But, like, he clearly doesn't care about being here anymore. So then that's a really good question, though.
Will Friedle
Did either of you. Because I can say unequivocally, no. Did either of you ever have a moment where any producer or not director, because the directors would do this in their own. Their own kind of right, but any producer would pull you aside and just do like a quote, unquote, wellness check. Like, hey, just seeing how you're doing, Just checking in, seeing everything. Yeah, no, me neither.
Ryder Strong
No studio teachers.
Will Friedle
I had that with certain directors.
Ryder Strong
I had it with directors and studio teachers. Yeah, yeah, directors and studio teachers. But none of. No, none of our.
Will Friedle
No Hafer would do that occasionally. Like, you know, somebody like a Steve or Lynn McKenna.
Danielle Fishel
Dee Dee used to check into Dee Dee. Dee Dee would do that.
Will Friedle
100%. Dee Dee would do that. Jeff would do that. David Kendall occasionally would do that. But no, there was no kind of producer that ever was like, hey, just, just, just seeing how you're doing. So. Yeah, neither of you either. Okay.
Ryder Strong
But, you know, I think it goes back to the separation of the writing staff and the act and like the, like, you know, the. I feel like there was the onset ensemble, right, which was our stage managers, our directors and us actors, our props. Like, those were the people that we were in craft service.
Will Friedle
Right.
Ryder Strong
Like there was the immediate all day work group and then there was the, you know, and then there was the guys and some girls in the office, like the writers, and they would only see us at the end of the day at the run through and then tape times.
Will Friedle
Right.
Ryder Strong
So I think that there was that separation that they just, they weren't part of our daily lives the way that those other people were.
Danielle Fishel
Topanga is surprised, But I heard you. Eric narrates again. She was as stubborn as a mule, but with twice the kick. You did it again. Topanga exclaims. Did what? Eric says. Topanga now narrates, maybe this was a mistake. And Eric asks out loud, what? I didn't say anything. Topanga says. Eric insists, yes, you did. But now he's just narrating. And boy, we like this joke. It's gone on. It's fine. It's funny.
Ryder Strong
It's fine. It's too long, but it's too slow. What I realized is that it's a great idea.
Will Friedle
It's a great.
Ryder Strong
The problem is when you're doing the voiceover, like, it just didn't time out. Right. It could have been.
Will Friedle
We were sitting there on stage waiting for playback.
Ryder Strong
Exactly.
Will Friedle
No, remember they did we, you and I recorded this, this earlier.
Danielle Fishel
Oh. And then they would.
Will Friedle
So we're like, we're like sitting here,
Ryder Strong
like waiting with a boom box. That's the problem, basically.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, exactly.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
They should have tightened it up because it is a funny joke if it just goes boom, boom, boom, boom.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly. Yeah, that would have. That would have been better. Topanga has had enough and she starts to leave. The detective yells out, listen, please, please, please don't go. We don't get a whole lot of crime here in Shanga, so I don't have a lot of cases. Please just sit down. He ushers Topanga to sit in the chair at his desk. Desk. What seems to be the problem? Ms. Topanga explains I know this may sound crazy, but I don't seem to know who I am or why I'm here. I seem to have lost track of my identity. Eric nods. The Case of the Missing Identity I'm gonna need some id.
Will Friedle
Hey. Hey.
Danielle Fishel
Meanwhile, at Cory and Topanga's apartment in present day and in color, Corey is still watching cartoons on the couch, covered in popcorn. Topanga, hurry up. He yells. Tweety's putting dynamite in Sylvester's litter box. We're back at black and white. Rory's. Topanga, whose name is now Trixie, has quickly become a seasoned waitress at the cafe. She shimmies over to Fez Head, Feeni and Costello's table. Before them come.
Ryder Strong
No sense to me.
Danielle Fishel
I know. How long has it been?
Ryder Strong
Why is she.
Danielle Fishel
Her name.
Ryder Strong
Why is she working? Like, just no.
Danielle Fishel
No time lapse to tell us either. Like, oh, now it's been a week. Anything. So it doesn't give us any sense of, like, oh, look how well she settled in. It's just. No.
Ryder Strong
Let's get back to those gags.
Danielle Fishel
Thanks. Yeah. Costello slash Alan greets her and asks, do you have the time? A confident Topanga slash Trixie responds while filling their coffee cups. Honey, I got all the time in the world. Just then, Isaac walks into the bar with angel and loves what he sees from Trixie. Ah, now you're talking our language. Ella Fitzgerald Kennedy adds, shangri La looks good on you, honey. Angel chimes in, you know, you really seem to fit in here. Trixie is genuinely happy. Like a glove, Toots. A girl like me could get so used to a place like this. Kind of feel like I was meant to be here. And then Gumshoe Eric walks in with his receptionist Rachel. He takes off his hat and announces, hey, dollface. And Trixie responds, hey. Gumshoe is offended. I was talking to Fez Head. Fez Head. Feeny is unbothered. Nice to see you, moron. Eric makes his way over to Topanga. Trixie, I think I've got a lead on your case. She has no clue what he's talking about. Out. What case? And Rachel adds, he means person. Gumshoe whispers, you don't remember who you are, remember? Trixie puts her hand to her chest. Oh, that's right. I was having such a good time here, I forgot. Gumshoe narrates. Like most people who come to Rory's, she too had found her Shangri La. Trixie compliments Amy. Hey, Ella, that last song was a real doozy. Ella laughs while patting her piano player on the back. I couldn't sing a note without sweet Willy on his 88. Again, Gamchu narrates, she didn't sing so good and he didn't play so good. But in Shangri La, nobody cares. Alan still is. This just truly unhinged Casablanca character looks at Fezhead Feeny and repeats, she don't sing so good.
Will Friedle
Fez head.
Danielle Fishel
Feeny replies, he don't play so good. And then, in unison, they both scream, we don't care. With real Waldorf and Statler Muppet vibes.
Ryder Strong
Now, I thought at this point, and it doesn't play out right, that I thought there was going to be some sort of, like, compromise. Like, you can't. Like, Corey needs to learn to be. To work a little bit or something. But that doesn't end up happening. Am I crazy?
Danielle Fishel
Like, it's just a penny at the very end. We know it's she's a nag and she sucks and she's a we hate her, but we need her because she does make us better.
Will Friedle
He does.
Danielle Fishel
He does say that.
Ryder Strong
Because when you were, like, correcting their grammar and bringing down Shangri La, I was like, right, because the point is, you can't just hang out and watch cartoons. And I thought that was gonna be a little more explicit, but it ends up being really anti Topanga for not relaxing or having fun.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. And there is a one little part where he said, but we need her because she makes us better. Better, that is. That's it.
Ryder Strong
Okay.
Danielle Fishel
But he does start it off by making sure everyone knows that she sucks
Will Friedle
with her political correctness and grammar and work ethic.
Danielle Fishel
God. Trixie. Now at debonair Corey Rory's table. Some more coffee, handsome? He smirks. Sure. Hit me, baby, one more time. Willy gets another idea for a song belting out Hit me, baby, one more time. Then he shakes his head. Nah. Rory cuts to the chase. Say, doll, what do you say you and I get hitched? Trixie's caught off guard. What? He explains. You know, tie the knot, walk down the aisle, make an honest man out of me. She's astonished. You want to marry me? He admits, I hadn't really thought about it, but sure, why not? She's confused. But you don't know anything about me. Rory pulls her closer. I know you're spontaneous and I know you're carefree. You fit in perfectly here. And I'm not taking no for an answer. She swoons, you won't have to, Rory. I love it here, you big lug. And I love you. Kiss Me. Kiss me. As if there weren't a thought between us, Rory leans in and he passionately kisses Trixie. Gumshoe walks over and annoyingly taps Trixie on the shoulder. Uh, sorry to interrupt, but I think I've got some leads on your missing identity. Trixie adjusts her uniform. Give it to me straight. Stupid. Eric says. This may sound stupid, but have you ever heard of something called. He looks at his notes. A time continuum vortex. Suspenseful music blasts and everyone in the cafe looks around. Trixie doesn't get it. A time continuum vortex. Another suspenseful music stab hits and everyone looks around the room. Then Trixie sees visions of college exams, a vacuum, dirty clothes, past due bills, and her modern day fight with Corey. All from before she found the door in the closet. She looks terrified.
Ryder Strong
Right, so this is where I was like. So she lost her memory. Right, because of the time continuum. But then she can remember, she just doesn't want to.
Will Friedle
Well, yeah, I think what it is is the fantasy world that you go into. Everyone who's been there is running from something and they instantly forget what they're running from when they get there.
Danielle Fishel
Gotcha.
Will Friedle
I think is the point.
Ryder Strong
Yeah, it made me think that they're echoes of, you know, the, the Corey amnesia time travel episode that we did. Because, remember when Corey goes to World War II.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Ryder Strong
In the alienation, he loses his memory and he gets married to the French woman or he thinks he's a French painter or whatever.
Will Friedle
So I was like, trap equals memory loss.
Ryder Strong
I guess.
Will Friedle
I didn't know that.
Ryder Strong
I honestly think that like, there's a little bit of like just our writers blending, you know, recycling ideas. Because I was like, why does she lose her memory? And how does you know? But I like what you're saying, that thematically it does make sense. Sense that like you live in Shangri La and you just get your past, you don't even know where you're running from. Except here she does remember it and
Will Friedle
then she decides to ignore it.
Danielle Fishel
But. Yeah, okay, I was going to say, but isn't Topanga in this case? Topanga's past is her. The future, cuz.
Will Friedle
Right.
Danielle Fishel
So she. So she wouldn't have even experienced it yet.
Ryder Strong
No, she's in an alternate world completely. It's not actually in the past.
Danielle Fishel
Never heard of it, she said, says she turns to Rory and they start kissing again. Gumshoe. Eric narrates something told me my services were no longer needed. Trixie stops kissing Rory and looks back to Eric. Your services are no longer needed, Trix. Relieved, Gumshoe, Eric thinks, oh yeah, it was her.
Will Friedle
It was her.
Danielle Fishel
Trixie smiles. Now that I'm getting married, it doesn't matter who I was. Gumshoe begins to leave, still narrating. Yeah, I've seen a lot of dames like her thinking they can run away from who they are. But it's been my experience that no matter where you go, who you really are always catches up with you. Rory looks into Trixie's eyes, still holding her close. Just think, the two of us together here in Shangri La. Ain't it gonna be grand? Looking in his eyes, Trixie asks, could you stop saying ain't? Everyone in the cafe looks at her. Rory's confused. What's wrong with me saying ain't? She reveals. I don't know. Just kinda makes me angry.
Will Friedle
Great read.
Danielle Fishel
So funny.
Will Friedle
That was a really funny read. Yep. Just kind of makes me angry.
Danielle Fishel
Angry. Dumb shoe. Eric watches from afar. Without knowing it, she was giving me clues as to who she really was. Trixie leans in. So now that we're getting married, maybe you could tell me what you do. He laughs. What do you mean, do? This is what I do. I'm a dandy. She's bewildered. A what? As if it's the most obvious thing in the world. Rory says. Says, I'm the one who says. Is everybody happy? Then, in unison, everyone in the cafe starts chanting.
Ryder Strong
Rory.
Will Friedle
Rory.
Danielle Fishel
He asks. You see what I mean? Topanga is still weirded out. I guess that's okay. I. I guess I could be Mrs. Dandy. Rory's relieved. Oh, that's swell. Gumshoe shakes his head and wonders to himself, but could she really? Was I the only one who thought this dame was about to run? A master. Willie, still at the piano, loves what he hears. That's it. He exclaims. He starts to sing. This dame's about to run amok. Looks like we've all run out of luck and nothing's ever gonna be the same again. We get Matt singing there. Obviously that song. Not a world famous song.
Will Friedle
No.
Danielle Fishel
Is the joke there.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
But we do get to hear Matt's great voice.
Ryder Strong
It's. But it's so weird that it cuts away for the big finish when we should have actually let him. I don't know why they didn't let him finish on camera. Like it's weird.
Will Friedle
Yeah, I know. Because he does. He goes. He starts with kind of the Michael Buble, this damsel. And he ends like Poppy. Yeah, it's very cool. Like the run at the end. He goes straight up into like. Like boy band kind of. It just shows how freaking talented he is.
Ryder Strong
No, he's super talented. But I wonder. I wonder if he didn't want to do that part like the reels, like finishing on camera for some reason or and ask them to let him. I think they did.
Will Friedle
My guess is they did that, not him. Yeah, I don't get it either.
Danielle Fishel
Willy's voice fades into the distance as we see time pass. Everyone looks exhausted around the cafe. Things have gotten tense. Costello knocks Feenies Fez off. Isaac looks at Trixie and mutters, I tell you, that dame is poison. Angel snaps at him, don't say dame. Ella calls out from a moping position on top of the piano. It's offensive. Isaac wonders since when? Costello mocks them. Them. Since Trixie said it was politically incorrect. Fez head. Feeny twirls a knife in his hand. I've decided not to like her. Rory, staring, admits he can't take it anymore. Trixie's made him worried about his future. Rachel blows a wad of bubblegum and sighs. She says, gum's bad for your teeth. Ella adds, she told me my songs were stupid. No one speaks up, so Willy breaks the news they are. And she sneers, well, you don't play so good.
Will Friedle
Good.
Danielle Fishel
Angel corrects her, he don't play so well. Oh my God, I'm like her. Isaac rudely tells her to go drop a dish. Gumshoe. Eric looks around the room and realizes Trixie has turned Shangri La into Angrila Angrila. So the message. The message here is that Topanga ruins a good time. And maybe most maybe the message is why can ruin even paradise?
Will Friedle
Even paradise in just like a couple days too. Yeah, didn't take long.
Danielle Fishel
Didn't take long at all. On cue, Costello looks at Fez Head Feeni. Realizing they're thinking the same thing. They declare the interloper must die. The entire cast starts chanting, die, die Die. Eric looks around in a panic and runs for the door. He knows he has to do something. We hear his narration, but first I have to grab Feeny's hat. Then he corrects himself. And by Feeny I mean vezed. As he leaves the phone from the time continuum vortex booth starts to ring. He notices it's blocked off with caution tape that reads this is not a phone booth. This is a time continuum vortex. Whatever you do, do not pick up the phone. He stares at it blankly. Damn, I wish I knew how to read.
Will Friedle
It's a great joke. I wish I knew how to read read.
Ryder Strong
Meanwhile, he's been taking notes. This is.
Danielle Fishel
He's the one who came up with time continuum.
Will Friedle
Vortex. Of course.
Ryder Strong
Of course.
Danielle Fishel
He pulls the caution tape off and answers the phone. Vortex. Who he closes the door and blurs out of sight. Let's talk about modern home shopping.

Now we're back in Cory and Topanga's apartment. It's current day. Gumshoe Eric flies out from the closet, now in color and confused about his whereabouts. Cory is still focused on the TV and popcorn, assuming it's Topanga. But eventually, when he notices Gumshoe, they look at each other and trade screams in panic. Gumshoe? Eric asks Rory and Corey quickly responds Rarick.
Will Friedle
One of my great joke favorite jokes. Maybe in all seven seasons.
Danielle Fishel
Rarick is so, so funny. Who came up with Rarick?
Will Friedle
I don't know, but it's such good Rarick. Rick.
Danielle Fishel
It's just. It's so Scooby Doo and like cheapest,
Will Friedle
easiest, most magical joke.
Ryder Strong
So good.
Danielle Fishel
I love it. It's so. It's so stupid. It's brilliant.
Ryder Strong
It is.
Will Friedle
It is.
Danielle Fishel
How'd you get here? Gumshoe blames the vortex. Corey looks him up and down and Wonders why he's dressed like that. Gumshoe Eric stares at Corey's bright red sweater. I could ask you the same question, Gumshoe. Eric looks at the TV and wonders, wonders, what's that coyote doing in that box? They both cackle at the cartoon for a second and then quickly get back to business. Gumshoe Eric asks why he's here and Corey explains, usually it's because you're lost. Gumshoe. Eric then notices a picture of Topanga on the wall, who he calls Trixie. Corey is confused. Gumshoe shows him the picture. You know, Trixie, that must be why I'm here. Corey explains, that's not Trixie. That's my wife, Topanga. Gumshoe reveals, your wife was transported to an alternate universe. As far as I can tell, your closet is a vortex that connects your reality with our. Cory's heard enough. Topanga, come out of the closet. Eric's drunk. Gumshoe. Eric corrects him. Drunk with knowledge. Come with me. He leads Corey to the closet and Corey complies. Fine. You want to put on Topanga's shoes again? We'll put on Topanga's shoes. Okay. Hey, Progressive.
Will Friedle
Yeah, absolutely. It's like, if you want to, that's fine.
Danielle Fishel
Gumshoe Eric pushes Corey through the vortex, then adjusts his fedora before hopping back in with him. Now we're back in the alternate reality. Gumshoe Eric and Corey arrive at the crime scene from earlier. The body bag is already covering Trixie. They're too late. Corey runs to her, shocked to see it's Topanga. Why would someone do this? Fez Head Feeny simply states she was getting in the way. Corey needs more. In the way of what? Then Rory appears. Of our happiness. Corey stares at his twin as Rory explains, we was all relaxed and happy until she came along. Wrong. You're a very good looking man. By the way. Corey pushes back, Topanga was a very good person. Ella slyly chimes in, yeah, well, now she's good and dead. The rest of the gang giggles at her joke. Gumshoe explains, so someone killed her and it's my job to figure out who done it. Everyone starts to nervously whistle and walk off, but Eric tells them not to move. They're all suspects. They all leave anyway, so he tries to compromise. Well, then, just don't leave town, okay? Just. Also very funny. Corey speaks up. Hold on. And they all stop dead in their tracks. He continues, maybe Topanga was a little annoying. And maybe sometimes she made me a little exasperated. But I never Once thought of doing this, he points down at her dead body. All right, maybe a little, but I never did. I think if the writers could have called Topanga the C word, they may have done it.
Will Friedle
Yeah, I never wanted to kill my wife. Even when she's a. I mean.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, I. Yeah. Which she is a lot.
Ryder Strong
We just have to learn to accept our wives. That's the lesson.
Danielle Fishel
And maybe try to get them to sit and watch a cartoon with us every now and then.
Will Friedle
You gotta take the good with the.
Ryder Strong
Oh, my God. That works on every level, my friend. You take the nag with the.
Danielle Fishel
That's the lesson.
Ryder Strong
That's the lesson.
Danielle Fishel
Oh. Which is the difference between me and. He turns around and dramatically points at Rory and you. Now tell me, why did you do it? Rory answers, I did it because she was ruining my good times. She was ruining our entire way of life. The group agrees. So Corey wonders, why is that? Because in your hearts you knew she was right. Because you knew that even though she'd change you, it'd be for the better. He looks down at his deceased wife. That's why I need her in my life. And you know why she needs me. He kneels down beside her. Get up, Topanga. She weakly responds. I can't. I'm dead. He reminds her, this isn't real. And Gumshoe Eric confidently declares, I knew that. Corey tells Topanga that this whole thing is just a cartoon. It's pretend. But he thinks it's exactly what she needed. She wonders, it was. And he nods, yeah, it was. And then they start to fade out of view. We're back at Cory and Topanga's apartment, in color. Topanga's back writing her essay with a smirk on her face. As Corey finally finishes his cartoons. He stands up and wipes all the popcorn off his clothes. And it's finally time to study. Topanga stops him. What if we take a break first? He's shocked. Shouldn't we clean up the popcorn? She smiles. The popcorn can wait. She gives him a kiss and he responds, Ah. They plop back onto the couch and she grabs the remote. They should watch some cartoons. She flips on the tv and we hear dramatic music and Gumshoe's voice. We pan over to see he's now sitting at their table a la Rod Serling in Twilight Zone. Shangri La. Is it hidden somewhere far away or just tucked behind the shoe rack in your closet? He puts on his fedora and winks at the camera. The choice is yours. With that, he opens the closet door and steps inside. Cory and Topanga continue watching their cartoons, completely oblivious to the dimension. Traveler now snuggled, Corey turns to Topanga with a smile. Isn't this great? And she agrees. Yeah, ain't it? Taken aback, he points out. You said ain't. She responds, I know.
Ryder Strong
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
All right.
Ryder Strong
There you go.
Danielle Fishel
Just. Okay, just don't be a. I'm a woman. I can't. It's just my natural way of being. I cannot.

Hosts: Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle, Ryder Strong
This episode of Pod Meets World takes the gang back to a pivotal (and strange) episode from the final season of Boy Meets World: "As Time Goes By" (S7E20). Framed around a 1940s noir-style time-travel premise, the original TV episode finds Topanga transported into a black-and-white world modeled after Casablanca, learning—via murder mystery hijinks—to be "less uptight".
Danielle, Will, and Ryder reflect on rewatching the episode, break down its confusing themes and messages, discuss how the series' approach to gender and character arcs has aged, and share personal memories from its production.
Fun Banter: The episode opens with humorous debates over the "proper" spacing around em dashes and ellipses, a grammar quirk Ryder attributes to his tiny high school's idiosyncratic writing style—now dubbed the "Nonesuch Style".
Sidebars: The hosts quickly veer into food talk, lamenting the heaviness of Chicago deep-dish pizza.
The hosts tackle the episode's strange implication that Topanga is so "uptight" she deserves to be metaphorically killed.
Reflection surfaces on how all three hosts read these scripts very differently as young actors:
Danielle Fishel (34:59):
"It's just...I see it all now with this much time and space...I never saw it through Ryder's lens...I also never really saw it through...Will's lens...It's just funny how 30 years later...we all can see...kind of the same thing..."
All agree that at the time, these themes went unchallenged, largely due to generational dynamics or the priorities of being young actors focused on other aspects of the job.
The hosts maintain their classic blend of silly, self-deprecating humor (with side trips into food, music, and grammar) but don't shy away from sharp, sometimes uncomfortable, critique of their own show’s messages and the industry’s treatment of child actors. The nostalgia is present, especially as they near the end of their Boy Meets World recaps, but it’s tinged with mature reflection about the limits—and flaws—of 90s sitcom wisdom.
For fans and newcomers alike, this episode offers funny memories, honest reflections, and a pointed look at how even your most nostalgic TV favorites can look very different through a modern lens.
