Will Friedle
Ryder, what's your favorite thing about summer?
Rider Strong
Well, as you know, we are a big camping family, and even though it's wildly difficult to take a whole family on the road, I absolutely love it.
Will Friedle
Well, what if I told you there was a way to manage the chaos?
Rider Strong
Go on.
Will Friedle
Every member knows Walmart plus is summer's greatest shortcut. With free same day delivery on groceries and more, you could save yourself an errand run or a sleepless night under the stars.

Will Friedle

I never expected to be passionate about was a toilet.
Will Friedle
Oh, we're a big toilet household. It's more important than your bed.
Danielle Fishel
Well, when I saw the Kohler Smart Toilet collection, it completely changed how I think about using the bathroom.
Rider Strong
The Kohler Vail Smart Toilet, especially, feels more like a beautifully designed piece of the room than something purely functional. It's sleek, modern, understated, and it really makes you realize how much thoughtful design can transform everyday routines.
Will Friedle
Well, that's what I love about Kohler. They've been redefining bathroom design for more than 150 years, and their smart toilets really show how innovation can work in a way that feels elevated, not overdone.
Danielle Fishel
A cleaner routine and a cleaner space can just about change everything.

Will Friedle

Danielle Fishel
If it smells like a haunted swamp, you've crossed the line.
Rider Strong
Relax. That's what Arm and Hammer Deep Clean is for.
Danielle Fishel
It's the powerful shortcut that forgives your laundry shortcuts.

Rider Strong
Alright, so this time when I sat down to watch the show, for whatever reason, I kind of got obsessed with our opening credits.
Danielle Fishel
Oh.
Rider Strong
And I was like, yeah. I was like, you know, these are really good opening credits. And I was like, why? Why are they so good? I was like, because they're doing so much work for the show as far as establishing the friendships. Also, it's shot on film, so it looks more real.
Danielle Fishel
It depends.
Rider Strong
Like, it looks like back behind the scenes footage almost.
Danielle Fishel
Yes.
Rider Strong
And it has this, this like archival quality. Like it's older and it's like. So it already positions the show and the storyline as like something that you should already know about. Do you know what I mean? Like, you're part of this group of friends and you, you know who's dating who because they establish like the kisses and the grabbing and the laughing. Anyway, so then I was like starting to go down the rabbit hole of like, there must have been some great articles and stuff written about the power of opening credits because opening credits have gotten so important.
Will Friedle
Right? I know.
Rider Strong
And then I came across this idea that I had never heard about. It's a French theorist named Gerard Jeannette. I can't believe. No, but I cannot believe I made it. This is like, this guy is like so up my alley. I made it all the way through, you know, film theory, literary theory in college. Studied it all the time. I never read this guy.
Will Friedle
You. You seriously made it all the way to almost 50 without knowing Gerard Mechanette.
Rider Strong
It's crazy.
Will Friedle
Amazing.
Rider Strong
But here's the cool thing. He up. His concept was Paratexts. How when there is a text, like when there is a book.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Rider Strong
We don't come to it completely naked. Like, you never are reading a book. Just picking up and the text is there. You're always. The COVID is a thing. The title is obviously a thing. If there's blurbs and reviews, the back. The author's photograph. And he said that there's. Those things are almost as important. He called them the vestibules. Like when you walk in so that by the time you get to a book. Right. And I was like, oh my God, this makes so much sense to me because I always. I've always thought about the way like even like we approach classic literature, right? Like when we're. By the time you're reading Moby Dick, you've already had to be told 50 times just by the COVID of the book. It's the most important deep novel you're ever going to read. Which I think destroys it for most people because by the time you get to the book, it's like, Jesus. It's like eating vegetables.
Narrator/Advertiser
Right.
Rider Strong
It's so much work, you don't realize it's actually just an adventure story about whales. Like, you know. Anyway, somebody. I looked it up and this guy wrote a book. Let me look his name. I'm so excited to read it. It's Jonathan Gray. It's called Shows Sold Separately, Promos, Spoilers and Other Media paratexts. And his whole argument is that nowadays in our. This is a 2010 he wrote it. So it's even worse now, but that the paratexts are defining the text almost more than the text itself. That the trailers, the interviews. And like, I think that there's an argument to be made that at this point they're almost eclipsing the actual text. Like, you kind of feel like you've seen certain move without ever even having to see them.
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Rider Strong
Because you just like already know.
Danielle Fishel
I swear, this is the perfect argument for the fact that people do no. No longer read the article. They only read the headline of the article.
Rider Strong
Yes, totally.
Danielle Fishel
And that's it. You read the headline of the article and now. Well, that's all I needed to know. It says this, this and this.
Rider Strong
Or even like how the way that Yahoo and like all these other news aggregators just like reference other articles. They're just like, it was written over here that this happened. And you don't actually read the thing. You just read the article about how there was an article that said the thing.
Will Friedle
And it's entire generation of people that are literally judging the book by its cover.
Rider Strong
Exactly, exactly. But I do think that there's an art form to the opening credits. Like, obviously, I mean, people talked about this with prestige television. Right. Like at this point, like Game of Thrones, like, the opening credits help define the show. Like, that's what people. They love it.
Will Friedle
Well, first of all, fantasy has been doing that from the beginning.
Rider Strong
Right.
Will Friedle
Good Fantasy. You open the front cover and the first thing you see is a giant map of the world.
Rider Strong
And then like a family crest.
Will Friedle
Family crest. And here's.
Rider Strong
Who knows here a family tree.
Will Friedle
They do. So they give you a ticket to the world. Before you actually get on the line.
Rider Strong
I actually think there's a. There's a more important argument. They have to make a fake world real. So they give you a bunch of detailed information. So it feels like, oh, well, there's an. There's an atlas somewhere. There's someone who's thought this all through. So you buy in easier. You know, you're like, oh, David. In David's world. David Eddings world.
Will Friedle
For my favorite of all time, the Belgaride, the Melorian series at the back, there's an entire system of weights and measures for each fictitious land.
Rider Strong
Yep.
Will Friedle
Where it's like, this is what this is worth in this country, but it's worth this. And you're like, oh, my God, this is real.
Rider Strong
Yeah.
Will Friedle
Yeah. It's nuts how the detail. But that was like, that was detailed for the nerd in me to delve deeper. Where I feel like what it's doing nowadays is it's telling a story so you don't have to do any work.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Rider Strong
Which is still pretty complicated.
Will Friedle
Game of Thrones is very Game of. But again, that's fantasy. Fantasy's in its whole thing.
Rider Strong
Okay.
Will Friedle
Just here, read the nine words for this, the top of this article. So you, you don't have to read the three page article is what I think is totally.
Rider Strong
I'm talking. But opening credits wise, like, I think like Mad Men sets you on a mood and you're like, oh, this guy's in trouble. There's somebody falling from a building. This is really. And I'm supposed to think this is kind of pretty, but there's tragedy in this, you know, and that, like, sets the mood. I was even thinking, like, my favorite opening credits, which is a good question I was going to ask you guys. My favorite, I think is Cheers. Oh, but the song is so good. But it's also sad. And then it shows all these historical photographs. And I think what that does is it says the bar is more important than we think it is. Like that there's a tradition going back. And then when people get together to drink, it's actually very important socially. And I think that it says all of that without ever having to say it. It just puts you in the mood of like, okay, these people, this crowd.
Danielle Fishel
It also tells you about legacy. Legacy of friendships. The enduring aspect that even after you're gone, the photos of you conversing and talking, they will live on.
Rider Strong
Yes.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, no, I. Cheers to it.
Will Friedle
The easiest credits in television history that is pretty phenomenal is all in the Family. I see them sit. It's literally just the two leads. It's Gene Stapleton and Carol o' Connor just sitting at a piano singing the opening theme song themselves.
Rider Strong
That's great.
Will Friedle
As husband and wife. That's it. The camera stays on them.
Rider Strong
That's great.
Will Friedle
And they just sing. By the way, Glenn Miller plays songs
Danielle Fishel
that made a Hit Parade.
Will Friedle
I mean, that's.
Rider Strong
I've heard that song.
Will Friedle
That's all it is. It's just the two of them sitting in a piano.
Rider Strong
The Simpsons, of course, is an amazing song.
Danielle Fishel
Simpsons.
Will Friedle
Simpsons is the brain. Yeah.
Rider Strong
Oh, right, of course. With all the heads.
Danielle Fishel
All the heads. And the movie. And that tells you everything.
Will Friedle
It's sort of like prototype for Game of Thrones. Yeah.
Rider Strong
A lot less dark.
Danielle Fishel
There's no blood.
Will Friedle
Yeah, it is. Okay, so let me ask. What's the most on the nose opening title sequence where it's like. I mean, one of them has to.
Rider Strong
We have to talk about Too Many Cooks. You guys have to watch Too Many Cooks. It's a short film. I thought we had talked about it at one point, but I got obsessed with it this summer or this year because the director finally made a. A feature that I wanted to see at Sundance and Indy wanted to see. Cause it's a mascot horror thing. We didn't get to see it, but. So Too Many Cooks is a whole short film that's like 15 minutes long. And the whole thing is a 90s sitcom. Opening credit sequence, going crazy. And it never ends. It's one of the most. I've seen it maybe 20 times. Indy and I watch it. We laugh our. It's so dark and so funny. You have to watch it because it just skewers the whole thing. But it starts off as like step by step opening credits, you know, or like Full House with like the. Oh, hey, a camera's Looking at me. And then it Freeze frames and it says their name. I think those are the worst opening credits. That, like, era of, like, just, like, I'm gardening for no reason. Boy Meets World, throwing a paper.
Will Friedle
I remember shooting that, and it was literally. It was Arlene kind of response.
Rider Strong
She was directing us. Yep.
Will Friedle
So it was just like, all right, Will, get on the bed. All right, now open the magazine.
Rider Strong
All right.
Will Friedle
No, don't look at the magazine change. Flip the page of the magazine while you're looking up. It's like, so I'm not reading the magazine. Magazine just. It was all.
Rider Strong
So.
Will Friedle
It was. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
I mean, but did you look directly at the camera?
Will Friedle
No, you look. You looked kind of.
Danielle Fishel
That is a. A slightly elevated version of what writer is talking about. There was the. The real classic. I think maybe even. I don't want to throw them under the bus, but I think Family Matters may have done it. It's the first one I can really picture.
Will Friedle
We're like. And you're kind of looking right at the camera.
Rider Strong
Interrupts you, like, oh, hi there. I just happened to be staring off into space, and you came along.
Will Friedle
Yeah. And then you had hybrid situations like that. Like, there were times, like Laverne and Sh. Where they'd be walking the streets. They're singing the song, but then they slam the doors together and, like, look right into the camera.
Danielle Fishel
So it was like.
Will Friedle
It was. It was. We're gonna take a little bit of
Rider Strong
Laverne and Shirley together. I don't remember. We used to say. We'd go. Oh, man, I wish I had video of that. We used to do, like, a whole Laverne and Shirley, like, holding hands and, like, listen.
Will Friedle
Do you remember the wheel? Cosmopolitan Incorporated?
Rider Strong
We're gonna do it. We do impressions of all the, like, little bits. Oh, we should have recorded that. That would have been. I wonder if that started when we did Chick Like Me. I wouldn't be surprised if we did that.
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Will Friedle
We've got to take the Pod Meets World theme song that Kyle did, and we've got to do visual openings with the three of us.
Narrator/Advertiser
Oh, man.
Danielle Fishel
That kind of mimics some of the
Will Friedle
best sitcoms of all time.
Rider Strong
Yes.
Danielle Fishel
That's cute.
Rider Strong
That's a great idea.
Danielle Fishel
We should do that.
Will Friedle
We should totally do that.
Danielle Fishel
Welcome to Pod Meets World. I'm Danielle Fishel.
Rider Strong
I'm Rider Strong.
Will Friedle
And I'm Will Friedle.
Rider Strong
We're gonna do it.
Will Friedle
It's the surprise ones. Those are the best. It's one of these where it's like,
Danielle Fishel
oh, oh, gosh didn't know you were.
Will Friedle
I didn't know you got me.
Rider Strong
How do you guys feel about signing your name a few thousand times?
Danielle Fishel
Wow. You know, I'm glad to know that it isn't just me who has. Can only be described as hand spasms.
Rider Strong
It's so weird.
Danielle Fishel
And sometimes you're. It's possessed. My hand does something and I go, what is that?
Will Friedle
Yeah, yeah.
Rider Strong
It's this weird. I have to be in the right zone. Like, there are times when I'm like, signing my name and I'm just like, what? I just wrote, like something completely different. I don't know what that is. There's extra swirls. It's. Yeah, it's a weird thing.
Danielle Fishel
And I notice for me, if I'm only focusing on my. That's that I'm signing my name. I don't know how to do it. It has to be while I'm talking or doing something else where, like, my brain isn't focused on that. But if I'm just focused on signing my name, which we talked about, that we got to do 2,500 times while we were in New York. And listen, guys, you're gonna be able to purchase an autographed copy by all three of us of Book meets World. Signed copies are available now. They will start shipping on November 10th. You can get them at Premier collectibles. And it is signed by all three of us for total the book and the autographs, $37. $37 sounds like a steal if you ask me. And if we. If we get to say, have you
Rider Strong
checked, what's the ebay price for a signed headshot?
Danielle Fishel
Probably $252.
Rider Strong
Really?
Will Friedle
I was gonna say. I thought you said $250.
Danielle Fishel
I imagine it's $2.50. I can't imagine it's more than that. We've signed so many things, it's worth nothing at this point. But it is cool. It is.
Will Friedle
Well, they give away a signed headshot of me for any ebay purchase. It doesn't matter what anybody buys. It also just comes with a signed Will friedle headshot.
Rider Strong
I've never gotten autographs in my life, except I have. I have purchased first edition books that are signed.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Rider Strong
For me, getting an author signature, an author's makes the most sense because it's like, oh, you're a writer. You write the thing. So this is like, yeah, I would definitely buy a couple books. I have a couple ones. Tony Hawk.
Will Friedle
Signed my Tony Hawk video game.
Danielle Fishel
I think William Daniels autographed 1776.
Will Friedle
That's sweet. I have an autographed book of his.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like books, books. I, I mean I know he didn't write 1776, but still, it's like it's in a book. It's. That's tied to him. It's. I think that's really cool.
Will Friedle
Buzz Aldrin's autograph walk to the moon. That's pretty sweet.
Rider Strong
That is cool.
Danielle Fishel
But can, can we just truly appeal to our listeners here to let you know that but for Writer Strong, especially if Writer Strong is able to say that he is a New York Times best selling author.
Rider Strong
Oh, that would be. Yeah, that's awesome.
Danielle Fishel
I mean, how cool.
Rider Strong
It'll be the first line of my bio until for the rest of my life.
Danielle Fishel
There you go. New York Times best selling author.
Rider Strong
New York Times best selling author. Writer Strong, who's also known for a show called Boy Meets World.
Danielle Fishel
You may possibly have known him.
Rider Strong
Father of indie.
Will Friedle
It's all great until it's New York Times best selling author. Writer Strong was arrested for. Then it's not so good.
Danielle Fishel
No, but that would be, that would be super exciting. And if you pre order one of these autographed copies, it goes toward helping us get on the New York Times bestselling author list, which would be so cool. Which would be incredible.
Will Friedle
I'm not even going to try to eater.
Danielle Fishel
I'm not even trying to hide that I want it.
Will Friedle
No, you want it. You want it bad. I see. I want it.
Danielle Fishel
I want it and I want it bad.
Will Friedle
Halfway through signing. Halfway through signing all the things our hands are cramping to do this. And Danielle just kept going. It's all going to be worth it when we're on the New York Times bestseller list.
Danielle Fishel
Listen to me. Let me tell you something. I love you both very much. You are both whiny little and I'm sitting next to you. I've got my two small children, my mom, my dad, my husband, and they've all just gone to the stat without me because I have to stay behind to autograph these books. And I didn't complain once. I got a Shirley Temple. I got a non alcoholic beer and I was just plugging away and Will's going, oh my God, how many do you think this is?
Will Friedle
I was not as bad as Ryder. And Ryder, I was not as bad as Ryder who got there.
Danielle Fishel
And two hours after us, two hours late.
Rider Strong
You guys were ahead of me.
Danielle Fishel
Oh my God, I'm never gonna. When do I stop? When do I just stop? Guys, he did Three.
Will Friedle
And he was like, I can't, I can't anymore.
Danielle Fishel
Gotta do finger exercises.
Rider Strong
I had so many oblig. I was coming from one to another
Danielle Fishel
and I was like, I don't so much socializing.
Rider Strong
The idea was like, do we really have to do this now? Right. And the answer is, no, it didn't. I was able to ship or bring them home with me. I brought the entire box home. And then I could leisurely in the comfort of my own home sign. And no one was there to complain to.
Danielle Fishel
Right. And so you just got it done.
Rider Strong
You watched.
Will Friedle
You watched talks in New York when
Rider Strong
we're only at New York for five days and I'm like, literally, you were
Will Friedle
there five, were there three?
Rider Strong
Yeah. I just could not like the idea.
Will Friedle
I just wanted to get it done because I was actually having alcoholic beer. So I was like, I can have a couple beers and do this.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly. You could toss back some. Some alcoholic beers. Anyway, I just kept saying to them, guys, this is absolutely worth it. It's absolutely worth it. And when we make it onto the New York Times bestseller list, it's gonna. You're gonna be happy that we did it. So don't think we look like an idiot.
Will Friedle
Do you think we can do it? I think we can do it.
Danielle Fishel
I mean, hope. I hope we can.
Will Friedle
I hope we can too.
Danielle Fishel
Here's the thing. It's not up to us.
Will Friedle
No.
Danielle Fishel
We have to put it into the hands of our dear listeners.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
And if there's one thing I'm not gonna do, it's gonna be to doubt the Boy Meets World fan base.
Will Friedle
Yeah, no, we got an awesome fan base.
Rider Strong
Let's tell them what's in the book to really entice.
Danielle Fishel
Okay, you're right. You're right. What do you get in the book? You get an essay from Ryder. You get a glossary of podcast inside jokes.
Will Friedle
Great. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
You get brand new inter with lots of people who have appeared on Pod Meets World over the years.
Will Friedle
A full semi nude fold out of me. Oh, did that not make the book? Did we not.
Rider Strong
Did they cut that once you sent in the photo?
Will Friedle
They were like, really? I had flowers on my nipples. I looked awesome.
Danielle Fishel
Like, I thought you looked great.
Rider Strong
I see you Burt Reynolds style. Like you've ever seen the Burt Reynolds on the bear.
Will Friedle
Yeah, like a tiger skin rug or something like that. Hell yes. I'm sorry they cut it.
Danielle Fishel
There's also never before seen photos, so. Photos that we haven't posted on our Instagram before.
Will Friedle
More. More kind of in, you know, a lot of times on the podcast people come on and maybe they feel differently about delving into a story a little more. So some of our guests I think went a little deeper into some of the stories they've told the podcast. All new stories, stuff like that, some really cool stuff.
Danielle Fishel
It's also if you look at the podcast, say you just found out about our podcast and you're like, wow, there are so many episodes to go through to learn the full and complete history of Boy Meets World. Welcome to this episode recap. It is season seven, episode 21, Angela's Ashes. It originally aired April 28, the year 2000. The synopsis when Angela's father wants to take her to Europe for a year, Sean has to decide whether to let her go or ask her to stay. It was directed by Fred Savage, his second Boy Meets World episode. It was written by Carlos Aragon. He wrote three Boy Meets World episodes, this being his last guest starring Julius Cary. He returns as Sergeant Moore, Angela's dad, a role he first played earlier in Season seven, but he actually debuted in Season five as a different character, Professor Michaels, in an early college visit from the gang. Carrie was best known as Show Enough from the movie the Last Dragon, but also appeared on shows like Murphy Brown, the Adventures of Briscoe County Jr. 227 and the Jeffersons. So before we jump into our episode recap, does anyone want to share their overall thoughts?
Rider Strong
Thought it was actually, I mean, pretty good. It was nice to, you know, I guess my my problem is it harkens back to the other Angela episode. It's like two guys fighting over Angela's future and making decisions for her. That is like the Big bummer takeaway for me. But overall, like, I just. You know, I missed Will's comedy. I missed not having some Eric comedy. But I thought Ben was so freaking funny. But, yeah, I don't know. You know, I just. I wasn't super comfortable with my performance. I was like, these are should be good scenes, like, me and Julius. I was like, I think it's almost there. But something was a little off for me. I just wish I could go back and do it again and maybe make an argument, like, as an actor, be like, hey, is there a way that we could maybe involve Angela a little bit more discussion?
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Rider Strong
That would have been in order. Like, make it less, like, we get to decide, you're a good man, You're a good father. I need a good father. You know, I don't know. And it's also a little weird to me that, like, are we broken up? Like, I don't. I'm assuming that gets resolved in the next couple episodes, but for some reason,
Will Friedle
I thought, oh, I think it does. Really? This is it for Angela.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, this is.
Will Friedle
That's it.
Rider Strong
For some reason, I thought the show ended with Shawn and Angela broken up, but it actually seems like they're trying to stay together even though she's going to Europe.
Danielle Fishel
They are. But clearly Sean knows that that's not gonna happen, which is why he says goodbye after she walks out. Because he says, earlier, if I say goodbye, then I'm saying goodbye, then I'm saying, yeah, right.
Will Friedle
Yeah. Well, I thought this was a strange episode. I thought it was a weird way to get rid of the Angela character. Kind of just like a. Yes. I felt Ryder, like, I see what you're saying about your performance. There were certain scenes in the beginning where I was like. I felt like you were just saying the words for the first time in maybe in seven years, where it was like, literally, like, you're like, yeah, you're right. I gotta go and get her back. And I was just like, wow. There was nothing behind that. Just. You said the lines, I'm gonna. Yeah, I'm gonna go and get her back. So, yeah, it was. This was an odd episode for me all the way around. And then by the end, it had nothing. It's like, Angela leaves and that's it. She's gone forever. And then it's all about Cory, and we're on to the next. And even Sean's like, you're gonna be okay, Cor. Like, that's just. It was. It was very. Oh, you know what? We need to throw in an episode to get rid of Angela before we move on to the last two episodes. I don't know. There was something tonally off about this entire thing, and I don't know exactly what it was. Love, Julius. Carrie is one of my favorite guest stars we've ever had. So anytime he comes on, the man just has a gravitas where you watch him in every scene that he's in. Again, at least now they're making a joke that Corey never listens to. Topanga. Yeah. So at least there's some. There's some funny payoff to that. But yeah. Jack now is the rich. Is.
Danielle Fishel
What the heck happened there?
Will Friedle
Why not?
Rider Strong
That was a weird time.
Will Friedle
And give him something to do.
Rider Strong
Yeah.
Will Friedle
The rich kid for the five years he's on the show.
Rider Strong
Whatever.
Will Friedle
So that was a weird B story. They. They're clearly. I think Danielle said this a couple episodes ago and she's right. Which is Michael. And the powers that be, not at abc, but working on our show are already doing whatever they can to hope maybe there's a spinoff with the four of us. So the rest of the characters be damned. Let's get rid of them one by one. Let's kind of marginalize them as much as they can. Let's focus on the four leads and let's move forward and see if we can get a show with the four of them. And that's what it really kind of read to me. Again, it wasn't. This was for something as big as Angela leaving, the character leaving and Shawn and Angela breaking up. I found this episode to be very forgiving.
Rider Strong
Forgettable.
Will Friedle
That's how I would put it.
Danielle Fishel
I loved this episode.
Will Friedle
That's great.
Danielle Fishel
So much.
Will Friedle
That's great.
Danielle Fishel
I have no idea what happened with Jack. I. I think my suggestion would be to adjust some of this. Is that this episode and this storyline, which I loved. And I. I see your point, writer, that Angela doesn't really get to be involved in the decision making as much as we would like. But that's only true on camera. We don't see her decision making. But I think she makes it very clear in that last scene that she's. She did make her choice. She made her choice and she's letting you know it's her choice. She doesn't even want to know what your question is before she makes it clear. I physically remove myself from you. I'm going to stand with my father. I have my arm around my father. Thank you for giving this to me, Sean. And then to come back and say now what did you want to ask me? So we don't see her. We don't. She doesn't have agency on camera. But she had. She's made her decision and I don't think so. I, I see your point. But I also think.
Rider Strong
But I think that even the choice infantilizes her because the choice is a binary. That the show's correct.
Danielle Fishel
You have to choose.
Rider Strong
You have to choose between your man that's going to take care of you and either it's your dad, which at the age of 22, what the heck? Like going to Europe with your dad means you can fly home whenever you want. You're an independent person. Why is your dad who you move with at 22. That's crazy to me. It's infantilizing. Or the only reason to stay is if you get a good man to marry you and it's worth staying for.
Danielle Fishel
So it's.
Rider Strong
That's it. Those are the options. There's no in between. There's no giving of the in between which is, yeah, we're in our 20s. I'll be there next year when I graduate. I'll see you soon. Like we're living life and it's a complicated series of choices. What kind of job are you gonna get? Sean? Like any of the nuance of like real 20 something is reduced to. Well, but her. And it's because she's a woman. If she were. I think if she were. Yeah. On the show. And I think it's. It's an infantilizing binary is what I would say.
Danielle Fishel
I completely agree with you. I wish though that this episode was the first of the two parter that ends the show. Yes.
Will Friedle
Yes.
Danielle Fishel
And this episode should have actually been goodbye to. To Jack and Rachel going to the Peace Corps.
Will Friedle
100%.
Rider Strong
Oh right.
Will Friedle
I thought that the entire episode and
Rider Strong
spend more time with Angela over the
Danielle Fishel
next two episodes and have it be that Angela. We have a two episode finale. What is the resolution to the Angela and Sean relationship and what is. Is what is the future of this group of people? Based on it looks like Cory and Topang moving to New York.
Will Friedle
We.
Danielle Fishel
We get this. This is a perfect cliffhanger going into the finale. And what are we going to do? There's no reason Jack and Rachel need to be still here.
Will Friedle
No, no. No disrespect to Matt and to. To Maitland, but they are by far the least important relationship on the show at this point.
Danielle Fishel
Correct.
Will Friedle
And getting rid of them in this episode and then the cliffhangers being. Because then is Sean And Angela, is she gonna go somewhere? Is Sean gonna go to New York? Is Sean gonna be.
Rider Strong
You could have had this stretch out over. Yeah. Way more important storyline. That's a great call. Yes, that's a great call.
Will Friedle
So many things like that. I also found it a little bit manipulative of Angela with her arm around her dad, looking at Sean, saying, I know you never got time with your dad, Sean, so thank you for giving me mine. It's like, well, now he can't have an opinion about it because it's like, what she's saying is, your dad died and I want to be with mine while. While he's still here.
Danielle Fishel
Yes. She's so manipulative. That's literally just.
Will Friedle
I then talk to him about that. See, these are the conversations that they should have had together without Julius Cary there, where it's like conversations between Shawn and Angela that are like.
Rider Strong
But it's not about. It's about Julius and Shawn's relationship. It's not about Angela's just the property. It's the property being shared between men.
Danielle Fishel
And again, it is boy meets world. It is any opportunity they had to have it be girl or woman meets world. They decided, let's give the mother to the dad. Let's, you know, let's turn. They. They took that POV every single time. And to be fair, that is the boy meeting the world is the entire point of the show. So it's a little unfair to be like, I can't believe every time they had to pick a pov, they picked the boy. But.
Will Friedle
But, you know, but they also would add other boys.
Rider Strong
Yeah, they added them in.
Will Friedle
As opposed to using the females that they already had on the show. Yes. That's the difference. It's not like, hey, it's always Sean's point of view. It's Sean's point of view plus a guest guy's point of view.
Danielle Fishel
I know.
Will Friedle
As opposed to Angela's point of view, who's been there for years. So, yeah, I just felt this was just a strange episode. Oh, my God, Daniel, you're 100% right. Jack and. And would have been perfect. Rachel should have been gone this episode.
Danielle Fishel
When she mentioned the Peace Corps, I was like, great. That's what the rest of this episode should be. You know what? My dad, Jack's dad isn't going to fund his lifestyle anymore. She's going to go to the Peace Corps. This should be a goodbye to Rachel and Jack.
Will Friedle
Yep. 100% and 100%.
Danielle Fishel
And it should have been a forgettable episode. If it's going to be forgettable in, you know, in Will's perspective, it should have been a forgettable episode about how they decide to go to the Peace Corps and that they end up leaving. And this could have been the first episode of a two part finale with, you know, setting everything else.
Will Friedle
It's the story of two couples. One couple that's gonna stay together and go to New York and the other couple that's gonna disappear and maybe never see each other again. And that's very a really interesting kind of storyline for the last two.
Danielle Fishel
Correct?
Will Friedle
Yeah, correct. 100%. The sun's out and that means your dad's gonna be out of the house. So this Father's Day at Lowe's, find what'll make his son.

So jumping into our recap, we start in the student union. Graduation is near. Students are gathered around a table that reads, pick up your caps and gowns here. Angela and Topanga enter, with Corey close behind. Reading the newspaper, Angela wonders how her friend can be so calm In a time like this, Topanga explains, because I'm one of 500 quarter finalists and I'm not going to get it. Angela doesn't care. She instructs Corey to tell his wife just how huge this is. Instead, Corey, who isn't paying any attention, reads an excerpt from his paper. Youngest dead guy yesterday 42. Topanga just shakes her head and takes a seat with Angela, who's still impressed. Wow. A summer internship with Brown Elliot. Jack and Rachel are studying one table over. And hear the exciting news. News. Brown Elliott. Wow. That's the most prestigious law firm in New York. Jack exclaims. They represent my rich stepfather. Oh my gosh, what they did to him.
Rider Strong
I know.
Danielle Fishel
Honestly, seeing him in this episode is what makes me feel like, please, this should have been an episode to get rid of them. Because you have, you have unfairly put
Rider Strong
Matt into this position.
Narrator/Advertiser
Him.
Rider Strong
Yes. With being an obnoxious character when the whole point of his character is that he was a stand up good guy. Like literally with the monkey episode, the point was he works hard, he does not take advantage of his money. And that here it is like, oh, I've just been a pretty boy taking care of.
Will Friedle
I was gonna say he's also really good looking. He likes to want you to know that how good look. And it's like, that wasn't. That wasn't Jack at all.
Danielle Fishel
Until he was assuming he was unassuming
Will Friedle
and wanted to be friends with Eric and wanted to be part of this group and was just a normal guy and wanted to be friends with Sean and didn't care as they're cleaning out the trailer. Didn't care where you're from. And I wish I could have been with you growing up and all that's out the door now. He's just a good looking rich boy.
Danielle Fishel
Topanga thanks him. But Jack clarifies. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I was congratulating myself on my rich stepfather, who, by the way, is bankrolling my new business venture. I'm Jack.com, which, you know, we looked up, is for sale by godaddy right now for $55,000. So $5,000, if anybody's interested, I'm Jack.
Will Friedle
Well, because you can kind of use that for, you know, Cory and Topanga are one thing. I'm Jack.com. you could, you know, I'm a Jack of all trades. I'm a Jack. You could use that for anything.
Rider Strong
So many.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, but I'm just saying we buy it.
Rider Strong
You know, when I was like, it's Actually a little ahead of its time.
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Rider Strong
This is basically like, I just. I'm going to be a social media influencer is what he said.
Narrator/Advertiser
Exactly.
Rider Strong
I could just be me. Yeah, I'm the product. Yeah, exactly.
Will Friedle
That's exactly what it is.
Danielle Fishel
Rachel wants to know the concept of this business and he simply responds, I'm Jack. She doesn't get it. So he emphasizes dad.
Rider Strong
He's basically saying, kardashians. I am the Kardashians.
Danielle Fishel
She pacifies him by shaking her head. Then out walks Eric wearing a graduation graduation gown, declaring, I'm graduating. I'm smart. The inmates let out a rowdy round of applause.
Will Friedle
I don't remember this.
Danielle Fishel
This happened for you all of a sudden towards the end?
Rider Strong
Yeah. People were cheering.
Danielle Fishel
It was like, oh, man. I know. Yeah, exactly. You were. You were like your own. Every time you entered, you got your own star. Star applause.
Will Friedle
I had no memory of that whatsoever. It was very. It's very nice. I will say that to the audience. It was very nice.
Danielle Fishel
People in jail love you.
Will Friedle
Yeah. Hell yeah.
Rider Strong
Yes.
Will Friedle
Big with prisoners.
Danielle Fishel
Meanwhile, Corey's still reading his newspaper and freaking himself out. You want to know how this poor schmo died? A bird flew in his mouth. A pigeon. Not even a classy bird. Unfazed, Eric has a question. Are you supposed to wear pants with these things? He lifts up his gown to reveal polka dot boxers. Everyone shields their eyes in response. Except the inmates. They scream in joy.
Will Friedle
Should have been Batman. Man, if I had to go back.
Rider Strong
What are they? I couldn't tell.
Danielle Fishel
What. They're blue and white. Polka dot.
Will Friedle
I would have done some kind of superhero underwear.
Danielle Fishel
Yep.
Rider Strong
Oh, then you would have to pay for that. Actually, that would have been a licensing issue.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Will Friedle
Or then you do a Disney character. It's like it's Mickey Mouse we couldn't even do. I mean, owned by Disney. We probably could. We had Mighty Duck stuff all over the place.
Danielle Fishel
Maybe they could have given you Mighty Ducks underwear.
Will Friedle
Cuz it would cover my duck.
Danielle Fishel
Then Angela's dad, in full army uniform, walks in and notices Eric. Put your dress down, Matthew. Eric giggles.
Narrator/Advertiser
All right.
Danielle Fishel
Is this the only time Eric has ever been called Matthews?
Will Friedle
No. He says it in the last one too. Matthews, you're a disgrace. This university. Right?
Danielle Fishel
Okay. Yeah, you're right. Angela leaps up to give her dad a big hug and asks what he's doing on campus. She also calls him Daddy, which every girl on the show apparently, no matter how old you are, still calls your dad Daddy. He points to Eric. Well, I didn't come to see that Eric is now bending over a table, his boxers back on full display. Angela's dad assures her that everything's fine, but he's been reassigned to Europe. Angela sighs. Oh, that's not near here. I thought you requested to be closer to me. He takes a seat with her on the couch. I did, but my orders are to upgrade security at the embassies. By the way, that's highly classified. On cue, Eric pops up between them with a goofy smile. Sergeant Moore forcefully pushes him away by the foot face. She asks her dad how long it's going to be this time and he says, a year. Angela is shocked. A year? That's forever. He smiles. Not if you come with me. We hear some dramatic music and now the entire gang is interested. He spells it out. I want you to come with me to Europe, Angela. She's in disbelief, not knowing what to say. Perfectly timed, a joyful. Shawn walks in and notices Sergeant Moore. Hey, hey, hey. There's the man who put me and Angela back together. They shake hands and Shawn immediately notices Angela is acting a little differently. We have a dramatic commercial break and
Rider Strong
then the amount of scenes in this episode that end on Sean. Dramatic look. There's like four of them.
Will Friedle
I know, dude, you could do a
Danielle Fishel
hell of a lot of weight on you.
Rider Strong
Hold that look, Ryder. Hold that look. Puppy dog eyes. Puppy dog eyes. Sadly, blissfully unaware.
Danielle Fishel
Puppy dog eyes. And then we return to the student union. Moments later, Shawn tells Sergeant Moore he's been taking care of Angela, and her dad nods. I knew you would. Shawn says hi to Angela with a kiss on the cheek, and he responds with a nervous hi. He's confused. What's going on? She responds again with just hi. Sergeant Moore chimes in. I'm sure you two have a lot to talk about. I'll be back at the hotel. Shawn suggests they have dinner later and her dad nods. Yeah, I'd like to like that. Now, with the sergeant gone, it's time for Angela and Shawn to address the elephant in the room. Shawn cuts to the chase. So what's going on? We shift to Corey at a nearby table, who finally shuts his newspaper to ask Topanga the same thing. So what's going on? She excitedly responds, well, I'm up for this Brown Elliot internship. Corey cuts her off. You, you, you. I'm talking about John. Topanga nods and explains the situation like it's a new storyline on Melrose Place. Oh, Angela's dad invited her to go to Europe with him. Shawn has no idea. And when we cut back to Shawn. He's wondering, how bad can it be with all the stuff that goes on in my life. And Angela finally lets it out. My father wants me to go to Europe with him. Shawn seems relieved. That's it. Angela begins to explain, but Sean cuts her off. Go to Europe with your father. Where's bad there. Angela finishes for a year. Sean's face drops. There's bad.
Will Friedle
Did anybody find it odd that. And this is why. Because having not seen the show, I didn't remember this. That Angela never inv. Invite Sean to go.
Rider Strong
No, I know there's no option. It's. Yeah.
Will Friedle
I mean, why not say, come with us. You don't know what you're gonna do for a year. Maybe taking a year off. We'll bum around Europe. We'll find something to do. Come with us. That never.
Rider Strong
What is she even doing in Europe besides being with her dad?
Will Friedle
Like he's going to. What are there.
Rider Strong
Is she gonna do all college? Is she not finishing college? Does she have a job? Is she. Well, like, we're all graduating.
Danielle Fishel
Everyone's graduating. This isn't. We don't have another year. We're all graduating.
Will Friedle
You're done. So why not. How do you not have the scene. Come with me.
Danielle Fishel
Well, I'll tell you why. Because they want to set us up for a spin off after watching to be leaving her. They wanted another bad thing to have happened to Sean because they have.
Rider Strong
And they couldn't let it be just her choice to break up with him. So they might create the dad and they'd give him all the responsibility for it.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Rider Strong
So that you're like. It's also a tragic separation as opposed to Correct. And something.
Danielle Fishel
You can't fault her for something you. You know, there's a no enemy in this situation. Everyone is a good guy, but it's a tragedy.
Will Friedle
And I guess there would. But again, this is why it would. Would have worked so well if it was the last two episodes. Because you can have these scenes of come with me to Europe. And then it's Cory going, no, you have to come with me to New York. Well, no, I don't. Do I go with them? Do I go with the girl that I love?
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. Do I go with surprise. Correct.
Will Friedle
Yes. There. That is just gone. Because again, the idea that she would never say, just come, come. It's a year. Like, what's the big deal?
Danielle Fishel
Come on.
Will Friedle
You're not. You don't have a job. You're not going anywhere. You're not doing anything. Come, come For a year we'll go hang out in Rome like. And my dad worked.
Danielle Fishel
It was never mentioned.
Will Friedle
Right, it was never mentioned.
Rider Strong
So I thought even just come every three weeks. Come, you know.
Will Friedle
No, I can't see you for a year. I'm going to Europe.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, exactly. I know, it's like another planet.
Will Friedle
I'll see you in a month.
Danielle Fishel
I mean, don't get me wrong, it's expensive to fly to Europe every three weeks and I don't know where anybody would get that money with. You're talking about college students and I think.
Rider Strong
Yeah, but I mean, over the course of a year you can come visit twice and have a long distance relationship,
Danielle Fishel
which I do think is Angela's plan. That is what she wants.
Rider Strong
But that's what we should be saying to each other. It's like, there's no nuance. It's gotta be, you know, heavy handed tragedy just for the sake of heavy handed tragedy. But without actually having any characters making the kinds of choices the characters have to make for good conflict.
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Rider Strong
Like if Sean has to actually choose over Angela or not, or she has to act. But instead it's like, it's also what,
Danielle Fishel
it's passive choice motivator for Sean to be like, wow, I've got a girlfriend who lives in Europe. I need to get a great job because in three months I want a plane ticket out there. And so I'm gonna, I'm gonna get to work, I'm gonna start saving money, you know, but, and that, but it's so wonderful.
Will Friedle
She's packing and leaving. So. Is she not gonna graduate?
Danielle Fishel
No, she leaves. She's not, she's not walking. I mean, you still graduate whether or not you walk.
Will Friedle
But it's like, I'm. Dad, I'm. I'll meet you there in a week. I'm gonna graduate with all my friends. No, it's like my dad came on a Wednesday, I'm leaving on Thursday.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, exactly. I have to leave the same day he does. As opposed to just like, okay, dad, I'll see you there.
Will Friedle
Without inviting.
Danielle Fishel
It's a TV show. It's a good calm.
Rider Strong
It's a rom. It's a romp.
Danielle Fishel
I like it. I do. Overall, I like it. I, I see. That to me is such a minor thing. I don't know why. I mean, I do understand that they wanted it to be sad and, and they very clearly, for whatever reason wanted it set up where Sean didn't have any strings going into the spin off, so.
Will Friedle
Sure. You know, this is a hugely important Relationship for a lot of people watching this show. And it was not given any credence in this episode. It was like by. By Angela.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. And I think again, that goes back to the idea that that is who Sean's character is. He sees that she's leaving, she's made her choice, and he goes, she will find someone else in Europe. I just know it, you know, And. And so he says goodbye to her and there's no way to make a long distance relationship work. And, you know, I guess that is not surprising for the Sean character that he goes to. Well, another person has left me. Another some. The person who I love the most has chosen something else over me. I guess I just have to let this person go. And it would be Corey who should be saying this shouldn't stop anything. But Corey can't have that POV because Yale was the same thing for him. And so no character in this scenario has the POV that if you really love each other, time, space, distance does not stop that. And that there are ways to make it work. That is not the POV of this show. This show is if you love each other, you are together all the time.
Will Friedle
Yeah. And you have to get married to
Danielle Fishel
show them that you love them.
Will Friedle
Yeah. I get why people say. Cause there's a lot of people that argue that the way they did Eric's character throughout the series was the dirtiest part of this. But there's other people that believe the way they did Shawn and Angela was the dirtiest. And I'm starting to lean towards that. That it's more how they did the relationship of Shawn and Angela where it just kind of was never given the. It was given all this gr. It and it's. We talked about this, I think in a couple. A couple episodes ago where Shawn seems to. Once they got him to college. I think Ryder, you were the one who were like, once the kind of the. The melancholiness and the. Who is this guy was gone. They just kind of dropped Sean a little bit by. Dropped him.
Danielle Fishel
By the way, I think they did Sean and Angela dirty this season, not this episode. I don't think.
Will Friedle
No, no, I'm saying the whole.
Rider Strong
I'm saying the whole relationship is. What character based choices does Sean make once he gets to college? He doesn't choose to date anybody else. He doesn't choose to. Like, it's like he literally just becomes a static crybaby, you know, like. And we don't see him mess up. We don't see him do poorly in school. We don't see him do well in school. We don't see him make. It's like he's just this static guy, and it's so freaking boring. It's so boring.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, it's too bad.
Rider Strong
Especially season seven. I mean, season six. I feel like he's dealing with stuff, like, throwing stuff at him, you know, but, like, what choices is he. It's just angst, you know, I gotta drive.
Danielle Fishel
And they get. They get you guys back together and. And. And then you want. We want to see their relationship. And it was such a thrown away. Yeah.
Will Friedle
Letdown.
Danielle Fishel
A letdown. This whole season. I actually, to me, I think the reason I liked this episode so much is that it actually felt, oh, every character in this episode is taking their relationship seriously. Every. Every character is looking at this going, well, this is a big deal, what she decides to do and if she leaves and how that impacts her and how that impacts Shawn. And we love her. She's my bet. What am I gonna do without my best friend? Topanga says, like, it was finally in this episode, I felt like it was acknowledged that Angela is an extremely valuable and important person to this dynamic. Whereas in every episode for previously in this season, it had been acted as though, well, we'll just. We just take her for granted. Yeah, she's here, she's here. We got. We got to give her a line. She's got to say something here, you know? And it's like. So I felt like the whole season took her for granted. And then this episode was actually like, this is a beloved individual who means a great deal to everyone here. And it's that. That is the reason why. I don't understand why that wasn't the first part of the two parts. Heart, goodbye.
Will Friedle
Agreed.
Danielle Fishel
And that the other two characters that we have completely also thrown under the bus the entire season. Why did we do it in this order? I don't know.
Will Friedle
Yeah. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
So then we're in the guy's apartment. Corey is pacing, saying, no, no, no, no, no to Sean, who is making a sandwich. He sighs.
Will Friedle
Wow.
Danielle Fishel
Europe. Corey's still frantic as Sean continues. I can just see her now, sitting in an outdoor cafe, reading poetry, sipping espresso. What a nice dichotomy between the way Corey thought about Yale and the way Sean thinks about Europe.
Rider Strong
Good point. Right.
Danielle Fishel
You know, for Sean to. From the very. Even though he's obviously, this is not what's best for him, the very first thing he does is put himself in her shoes and name all of the wonderful things will be good for her. That will be good for her.
Will Friedle
And that genuinely thinks about her first.
Danielle Fishel
Genuinely is bringing him joy. Joy.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Rider Strong
Right. And then Corey's got to bring it down.
Danielle Fishel
And then Corey's got to say, no, no, no. What about you, my friend? This is. Yeah. What about the man here? Corey is stewing. You know what else they got besides cafe in Europe? They got men. Men named Paolo, Enrique.
Rider Strong
I was dying. All the sound just. Just funny names. Funny and accents.
Will Friedle
That's all he needs.
Rider Strong
God, this is my favorite scene of the episode and maybe my favorite Cory moment for a long time. I just love that. That was so funny.
Danielle Fishel
Yep. And it's perfectly in character with who Cory is. The panic, the stress, the anxiety, and everything going back to. What if another man wants her? They do.
Will Friedle
Well, that's one of. I'm sorry. That's one of the things that I'm realizing, especially about season seven, Cory. There's such a joy in Corey. He has to be anxious all the time. So it's nice when he gets to focus on being anxious for someone else.
Rider Strong
Else.
Narrator/Advertiser
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Will Friedle
And that's the thing with him where it's like, okay, now, like, oh, I'm gonna be anxious for you now. I don't have to worry about me. Yeah, I'm worrying about you. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Will Friedle
It's great.
Danielle Fishel
They sit there prowling around in their dirty Ferraris, looking for that fresh American meat. Sean says he trusts Angela, and Corey responds by laughing in a French accent. My little croissant, jump into my pigueur and we will drive on the wrong side of the road. Corey now mimics Angela. But I love Sean. Then he switches back to the French suitor. Phooey on Sean. If I was your man, I would never let you go. Shane cannot possibly satisfy you. He's a little trailer boy with a stupid American. Sean finally stops him. Shut up. Corey, now in his normal voice, is shocked. I love that you can quietly lie to yourself while your life is just falling apart. Really, I just find it adorable. Sean shrugs. I want Angela to be happy. Corey isn't buying it. You're a liar. A year away will kill your relationship. Which is, again, we. We know to be his true pov. So, you know, it would have been nice for Corey to say, what's a year? What's a year to. To the love of your life. You know, get a job, save money. Look at what. Look what Topanga and I did with the house. And, you know, you can do that and buy a plane ticket and, you know, but.
Will Friedle
But which is what Sean did for him. Like, we'll fix up the apartment.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly.
Will Friedle
Don't worry about it. We can. We can.
Danielle Fishel
This is great.
Will Friedle
We'll fix everything up and clean it up. That's not the friend that Corey is.
Danielle Fishel
No. Sean poses the question to himself in Angela's shoes. How often do you get to spend time with your father, huh? Corey scoffs. That's nice, Shawn. Are you gonna nice yourself out of the girl you love? I mean, that is dark. Are you gonna put yourself in someone else's shoes and then not get what? Is that what you're gonna do? Is that what you're gonna do? Are you gonna think about others and do what's best for them? Huh?
Will Friedle
All the while not while not listening to his wife again.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly.
Will Friedle
Yep.
Danielle Fishel
Sean says no. Now he's convinced, I've lost too many people that love me. I'm not letting this one go. I'm gonna tell her to stay. He quickly stands up with determination, but Corey quickly stops him. Nicked. You can't do that. Sean, now confused, asks, asks, why not? And enlightened Corey explains, because you can't make this decision for her now. This is. This is the manipulation that would be like me telling Topanga she can't go to Yale. It's a decision she's gotta make on her own. Sean wonders, isn't that risky? And Corey responds, you said she loves you. And Shawn knows she does. So Corey continues, then there's no risk. Listen to me. Take it from experience. Women have got to go through a process. With women, it's all about the process, right?
Rider Strong
And this, it sounds like you can't pressure her. She's got to make the decision. But it's actually, you gotta give her the illusion of making her own decision.
Danielle Fishel
You have to pretend.
Rider Strong
You have to pretend and let her go through her process and shoes and whatnot. But she will ultimately do exactly what you want. Yes, but it sounds so close to like, hey, you don't wanna push her, corner her. You don't wanna, like, corner her because. Because she's gotta make this decision on her own. It's. She's gotta make this decision on her own. And then, yeah. Cause I was so confused at first. I was like, oh, this is actually good advice. But then the next, you know, when she does say she's leaving, he's like, well, you couldn't. You can't let that happen.
Danielle Fishel
And he even flat out says, no, you let her make her decision if her decision is the one you want. If she says the other way, you Change tactics.
Rider Strong
Yep.
Danielle Fishel
Literally. But I actually like it.
Narrator/Advertiser
It.
Danielle Fishel
Because it is finally an acceptance that. That is just. That's exactly who Corey is. We're not reading into it. We are not making it up that he is a. That he is a manipulator.
Rider Strong
Believe what he says. Yes. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Actions. Believe his words. This is the final culmination of Corey telling you, showing you who he is. I will believe him. I will believe. Here it is.
Will Friedle
Yeah. He's not obfuscating anymore. It's like, let me just tell you how I am. You've got a manipulator to do what you want to do.
Danielle Fishel
Correct.
Will Friedle
Correct.
Danielle Fishel
And so to me, I walked away from it going, that's a character with a pov.
Rider Strong
Right.
Danielle Fishel
Right. You know, I don't have to love every character in every show. This is his pov.
Rider Strong
And you could argue that Corey's learning his lesson by the end of the episode in that he wasn't actually aware of what his wife was doing. And he's completely wrong in this argument.
Danielle Fishel
Yes.
Rider Strong
You know, there's. It's there. You know, it's not like that character is rewarded all the time. But in general, Corey is rewarded. But yes, you know.
Danielle Fishel
Yes. So Sean recounts the new plan. So if I let her go through this process, she'll make the decision to stay all by herself. Corey adds. And she'll love you even more. And she'll stay right here and never go anywhere and always be in that living room. Sean nods. Huh. This will be like the first time that everything's turned out okay in my life. Life. Corey agrees. Definitely. The only monkey wrench is that I've noticed most of Topanga's shoes come from Europe, which I didn't understand. The joke is the idea that the b. The downside is that Angela's going to buy more shoes.
Narrator/Advertiser
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
That she.
Rider Strong
That. That she's going to choose Europe because of the shoes.
Narrator/Advertiser
Oh, right.
Danielle Fishel
Okay. God.
Narrator/Advertiser
Oh.
Rider Strong
Because women care about processing shoes more than anything. So you give her the process. She might also still want the shoes. And that would make her go to Europe.
Will Friedle
Anga already has all the shoes. Then you can get.
Danielle Fishel
Get them anywhere. That's why I just say I don't. And then we're in the student union. Jack is on the payphone begging like a child.
Narrator/Advertiser
But dad.
Danielle Fishel
But Daddy. He abruptly drops the receiver in disbelief. Wide eyed, he zombie walks over to Rachel who's sitting on a chair reading all about the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps could be a great way to see the world and help people. At the same time, Jack waves are off. Yeah, yeah, peace. I really need to talk about myself right now. I have a serious crisis on my hands. Here, here. Rachel scoffs. Yeah, right, you crisis. What could go wrong in that stupid charmed life of yours? Jack whines and bites his palm. I'm poor. My stepdad's cutting me off. He doesn't want me to start. I'm Jack.com. he thinks it's risky. I think it's brilliant. Idiot. He wants me to be an investment banker and to follow in his footsteps. Rachel shrugs. Well, then work for your dad. Jack isn't hearing it though. He wants to start his own business, so Rachel encourages him to do what he's passionate about. He scowls.
Will Friedle
How?
Danielle Fishel
I've got no money. I can't be poor. I'm too good looking to be poor. While still holding the Peace Corps pamphlet, Rachel reminds Jack, stick to your principles, because without principles, you're nothing but a shallow, soulless scum. And we cut to Eric, who's now over by the payphone, who's the opposite of shallow, soulless scum.
Will Friedle
I. I. Probably the most depth of any character
Rider Strong
on the on the show. The most heartbell.
Danielle Fishel
Yep, Certainly anyone.
Rider Strong
Soulless is not the word.
Danielle Fishel
No, no in yes, hello, Jack's rich stepfather. I'll be your son for money. Well, it sounds painful, sir, but I'll do it for the money. What do we think he said?
Will Friedle
Anal.
Danielle Fishel
I'm wondering though, like if he said, you know, what was the thing that our writers used to say that was like from Happy Days or something. Like sit on it and spin. You know, like something like that.
Rider Strong
Like an insult. Like.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, like an insult. Like something you say to someone.
Rider Strong
Like you take it up the and then he says, that sounds painful, but I'll do it.
Danielle Fishel
I'll do it. Yeah, as if that was his offer. Oh, you know, sit on it and spin.
Rider Strong
Sounds painful, but I'll do it.
Will Friedle
Why don't you take the phone and shove it up your.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly.
Rider Strong
That's probably what it was.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly, right?
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Then Topanga walks in wearing a business suit. Love it. A glimpse into our Girl meets World future. And Corey immediately runs over to apologize. She's confused. What did he do? He asks. Aren't we fighting? He woke up alone this morning and thought they had a sleep for fight. No, she reminds him, I had my on campus interview for the Brown Elliott internship this morning. Corey pauses before pretending he remembered and is enthused. Oh yeah. Hey, Brown Elliot. All right. How'd that. How'd that work out for you? Topanga admits, I'm not sure I really appreciated it when they all applauded for me, but those things can be just so hard to read. Just then, Sean walks in, and Corey gets distracted. Topanga continues to talk about the interview. Interview? They've narrowed it down to only a hundred candidates. Corey nods, paying no attention to his wife. That's good for you. Then he shouts, sean. And dishes her. She sarcastically smiles. Thanks, honey. Was it sarcastic? I don't think it was sarcastic. That's the other thing I kind of appreciate about this. Topanga doesn't need him. Topanga is in no way bothered by the idea that he's not listening to her, because, again, this is just their dynamic. And she is fulfilled by her best friend knowing she gets to have those conversations and she gets that support from other people in her life. So at least if she's married to a total doofus, she doesn't rely on him for those things. She's just like, yeah, thanks, honey.
Will Friedle
She also had a moment at the end, which was phenomenal with the. With the. And they worded it perfectly, where she says, we have to move to New York, right? Not can we not. Should we not. Hey, can we.
Rider Strong
We're. This opportunity is too good.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, and I'm prioritizing myself.
Rider Strong
Yep.
Danielle Fishel
Corey rushes to Sean to coach him some more. Now, after Angela tells you that she's decided to stay here, what do you see? Say? Sean recites, I tell her I wanted her to stay all along, and my life is miserable without her. Corey prompts him, and this will like clockwork. Shawn answers, validate her decision and give me lots of kisses. Corey beams. I've taught you well. Now go get your girl, you crazy kid. Corey and Shawn give each other the most loving embrace we've ever seen on the show. And Shawn is off to find Angela. Now, outside the student union, Shawn finds Angela studying at a nearby table and sits down next to her. To her, clearly stressed, she admits, you know, I'm going crazy about this. He sighs, me too. She thanks him for letting her work it out. And he plays it off. Hey, you had to go through your process. She explains. She went back and forth so many times because Shawn means everything in the world to her. Shawn nods. Then Angela reveals, and I could never leave you. He smiles knowingly. And I could never leave you. He gives her a big hug as she adds, unless you said I could go.
Rider Strong
Go.
Danielle Fishel
He pulls away. What? Then she asks a familiar question. When will I ever get a chance like this to Be with my father. And then we go to an intense commercial break. We are in puppy dog.
Rider Strong
Wounded puppy dog.
Danielle Fishel
Wounded puppy dog.
Rider Strong
Look, hold Ryder. Hold it.
Will Friedle
Hold on.
Rider Strong
Hold on.
Will Friedle
Ryder's wounded puppy dog shaking the M M's.
Danielle Fishel
Look over here.
Rider Strong
Tears, Tears. Can you well up? Well up those eyes?
Danielle Fishel
And we are in Cory and Topanga's apartment. Corey answers the door and just boxers in a T shirt to see Sean, who's been radio silent for two days. Corey wants to know where he's been. Sean explains spending all my time with Angela. Corey's thrilled. That's what I love to hear. So did she tell her dad the bad news? How'd he take it? Sean sighs. She's going to Europe core. Tori can't believe it. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Rewind for a second. Second. So Sean breaks it down. She said she wouldn't go if I told her not to, but you know, she wants to go. She wants to be with her dad. What could I do? Corey is furious. Ugh. Are you nutsy faking? She wants you to fight for her man.
Rider Strong
Nutsy Fagan.
Danielle Fishel
Nutsy Fagan. Yeah.
Will Friedle
And they put it. I put it as faking on, but it's Nutsy Fagin.
Danielle Fishel
It's Nazi Fagin.
Rider Strong
This was a thing you said this will.
Will Friedle
We used to always say big and mash.
Rider Strong
Is that what I.
Will Friedle
Okay, yeah. Klinger used to always say, I'm Nazi Fagan. Yeah.
Rider Strong
Is it like a reference to Oliver Twist? Fagin. The character of Fagan and Oliver Twist.
Will Friedle
Funny words.
Danielle Fishel
Nazi Fagan.
Rider Strong
Okay, I'm looking this up. Keep going.
Will Friedle
I was just about to look it
Rider Strong
up because I was like, that's a will line. I have no idea. And that was like. I always thought it was just something you said, but. Okay.
Will Friedle
Nutsy Fagin was a 1970s snack brand famous for its crunchy seasoned and spicy coned peanuts.
Rider Strong
Gotcha.
Will Friedle
But then why.
Rider Strong
So it was just like calling somebody, like, you're. Because. Because you're saying you're nuts.
Will Friedle
No, like you.
Rider Strong
You're nuts. Was the same. So it's like taking it to the next level. You're a Nutsy Fagin. I don't know. Right.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. Okay.
Will Friedle
I. I get. Oh, now this says there's another one that says it's a very old reference to John, quote, Nutsy Fagan, who was a vaudeville actor. And the implied insult from Frank the Klinger is so. Acting is so bizarre and loony. So they're saying there was a vaudeville actor named John Nutsy Fagan. Wow.
Danielle Fishel
It's either A peanut or a person.
Will Friedle
This is one of those things. We're never gonna.
Danielle Fishel
We'll never get to the bottom of it. She wants you to fight for her, man. Sean pushes back. There's no fight. The process. It's over. She's going. Corey disagrees. She's testing you. She wants you to show her how much you love her. Her. Shawn assures him she knows, but Corey says, not enough to keep her from going. You failed the test, Sean. You forgot to pay attention to what she wants. Topanga. Topanga is always testing me. Always. It's nothing but tests between me and the old lady, but I always pass. You want to know why? Because I pay attention. I love this too. That, like. But not enough to keep her from going. As opposed to the idea that if you love someone enough, you do the sacrifice so that she gets to go and you make the travel back and forth. You know what I mean? Like, Topanga's gonna go to Yale, and I'm gonna. I'm gonna come and go figure it out. You know, I'm gonna figure it out.
Will Friedle
But he's also figuring out all these tests. So this was a test, but he doesn't figure out that Topanga tests him with, like, go date another girl. See if you need to do that. Go to. Topanga tests him a couple times, and he never picks that up. But he picks it up for other people.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. Yeah. On cue, Topanga appears, wearing another business casual suit. Wish me luck. I'm leaving. Corey dismissively responds, good luck. Sean asks, what are you. What, you leaving your man too, Topanga? Topanga responds, no. I have the final round of interviews in New York. I'll be back before leaves, though.
Rider Strong
Cory insists we graduated college in two years. All of us.
Danielle Fishel
Yes, basically. Have we only been. Have we only been there season six and seven?
Rider Strong
Yeah. Because end of season five was graduation from high school.
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Rider Strong
So we made it from 6th grade to 12th in four years.
Danielle Fishel
Uhhuh.
Rider Strong
So there's like a time travel and then all of college in two. And, yeah, you're all very. No. 5. So it's five years to go from
Danielle Fishel
sixth grade, seven seasons to go from sixth grade to graduating college.
Rider Strong
Yeah. Okay. But yes, the accelerate. The. The accelera. We skip one year in the. In the high school years.
Danielle Fishel
Yep.
Rider Strong
And then we are totally accelerated through college at, like, double speed.
Will Friedle
And Eric took a year off from college, but still graduating at the same time with you, so he must have also failed a year somewhere down. He was two years older than everybody.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Rider Strong
You don't really fail a year in college. You just do it again.
Will Friedle
Got you.
Danielle Fishel
Take enough units.
Will Friedle
Gotcha, gotcha.
Danielle Fishel
Corey insists Angela is not leaving. Okay, that's negative. And we do not need any negative Nellies around, right? But right now. So goodbye, Nelly. He turns his attention back to Shawn, but Topanga continues to stare at him. Standing at the door, Corey turns around to ask, can I help you? She eagerly asks, aren't you going to give me a kiss for good the luck? He blindly responds, good luck, and gives her a peck on the cheek. She leaves, and Corey returns to the conversation that he actually cares about Shawn. You failed. You failed because you have absolutely no idea what's going on with your woman. Shawn asks, where was Topanga going? And Corey says he doesn't know laundromat. Shawn pivots back to his issue. Why would Angela say that she wants to go if she doesn't? Corey has an answer. Because how can she turn down her old man unless someone tells her to? Sean's starting to believe him again before he continues. Her father's a strong guy. He told her to go, but she was waiting for an easy person to tell her not to.
Rider Strong
This is where I'm just. My brain was melting in the logic. Just.
Will Friedle
Well, he literally says it. He literally says it. You need to be a stronger man than telling her what to do.
Danielle Fishel
He says, tell her not to. But yet you go to the dad basically to say, I challenge you to a duel.
Rider Strong
Yeah, yeah, take off my glove and slap him across the face.
Danielle Fishel
Sean sighs. You're right. I didn't fight. I let her go. Then he gets mad at Corey. You told me to do nothing. He argues, No, I told you to do nothing. If she decided to stay, if she decided to go, what idiot wouldn't do something? I can't believe I have to tell you that. Shawn tells him to stop yelling, but Corey pushes back anyway. Did you once ask her to stay? Shawn admits, no. So Corey asks, then what choice does she have but to go? Sean answers, none, and Corey nods. It's you versus her dad. I realize that you like the guy, Sean, but you're fighting for the woman you love.
Rider Strong
You versus her dad, not her. She has nothing to do with it.
Danielle Fishel
Nothing at all.
Will Friedle
She's gonna do what she's told by the strongest alpha male there.
Danielle Fishel
Yes, and that is why she decided to go. It's not because she wants to go. That's a misunderstanding.
Will Friedle

Then we're in Angela and Rachel's dorm. Sean knocks on the door and anxiously lets himself in looking for Angela. She's nowhere to be found, but the room is now filled with boxes and Sergeant Moore is helping pack. He tells Sean that Angela will be back soon. She went to get more boxes. Sean stands his ground. She's not leaving, sir. I'm gonna ask her to stay. And she will because she wants to be with me. Sergeant Moore isn't amused and he goes back to packing. Angela's leaving with me. Shawn lets out a little laugh. I thought you were my friend. The sergeant responds. We are friends. Shawn closes the door and says yeah, cause what kind of friend puts us together and then rips us apart because he wants to go to Europe. He insists that was never his intention. So Shawn wonders what his intention was then, because he's taking her away from her friends and the person who loves her. Shawn reminds him that she has a whole life here. How could he do this to her? Sergeant Moore explains, I want what's best for Andrew, Angela. Shawn argues, I'm what's best for Angela. I am here for her every single day of her life. Can you say that, sir? Sergeant Moore, now very focused on Shawn, stands and looks down at him. No, I can't. Sean looks up at him and responds, well, I can. And I know what that's worth. Because no one that loved me ever was. Not my mom, not my dad. Sergeant Moore places a hand on his shoulder. I'm sorry that happened to you, son. Then he begins to walk away. Sean continues. You know, I went away once. The sergeant says Angela told him about that. And Shawn nods. I left everyone behind that meant anything to me. And that's what brought me back when I realized that nothing out there meant more than the people that are here for you every single day. Sergeant Moore counters, look, I know how you feel. I've spent far too much time away from my daughter. This may be my last chance to spend some real time with her. This may sound selfish, but I'm not going to let anything get in the way of that. Shawn crosses his arms. This may sound selfish, but what if I asked her to marry me? Sergeant Moore raises his eyebrows in disbelief. Sean reminds him, you said you liked me. How much do you like me now?
Rider Strong
I hate this scene so much.
Danielle Fishel
This is this.
Rider Strong
Yeah, it's not this two characters monologuing at each other. It's just. Yeah, it's not good. And, yeah, I'm phoning it in. I just. Like, this is. This is the one. I want to go back and be like, hey, let's get out the pencils. Let's rewrite a few lines here. Let's find objectives that are more immediate and accessible. Like. But I think ultimately it's just a weird objective. It's like two guys fighting over.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Rider Strong
A girl. It's. It's just such a weird scene. Like. And. But instead, we just have to share so much information. Like, it's not. It's not. Yeah. It's just. Yeah.
Will Friedle
Information. You've got two very good actors in a scene. That's an important scene that with one rewrite and some work, it could have been a phenomenal scene.
Danielle Fishel
I do. There is A part of it that like. Like, if I think about these two again, these two characters and their POVs, I do get the sense that her dad knows that this is what she wants to do. Like, not. It's not because he's manipulated her. I don't. I don't. I can't say that he is doing the same thing that Shawn is doing because of the advice of Corey. He came. He basically. Let's think about this from his perspective. His daughter's graduating from college, but she doesn't have a job yet. Obviously, she doesn't have something she's going off to. Let's take this year between college ending and you starting the rest of your life to spend quality time together that we've never had, because my job takes me everywhere. And let's do it in a fantastic place like Europe for a year. And she has then thought about it and gone back and forth, and she has thought, thought, man, when do you ever get that opportunity again? As a matter of fact, my own boyfriend's father died before he ever got to do this. I don't want to. I don't want to pass this opportunity up. I want to go. Sean's POV is, ooh, she made a decision that's going to negatively impact me. What if I manipulate the situation with something like a marriage proposal to get what I want? And her dad is just saying, huh, interesting. But I still feel like there's a quiet confidence that he knows. And then he says, well, I guess we're just gonna have to see which one of us knows what's best for her. And then she arrives and walks over to him, puts her arm around him and says, thank you for giving me this gift. And I think he's known that all along that, like, this is what she wants. And so.
Will Friedle
But that's why he doesn't. He shouldn't be in the scene. It shouldn't be Julius. This entire scene should just be Angela and Charlie on.
Danielle Fishel
Agreed. But from the. We have to understand at this point that Boy Meets World is not going
Rider Strong
to give her that.
Danielle Fishel
They're not going to give her the agency in this. It's going to be Sean having to talk to another man about, I'm gonna listen. I've got tricks up my sleeve to manipulate her. And if I have to do it to get my way, I will. And at least the other man in the scene is saying, saying, okay, interesting.
Rider Strong
Good luck with that.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, I guess we'll. I guess we'll see. 1. We'll have to figure out, you know, whatever's best for her is what will be. And then he does make Sean does do the right thing. When it is again revealed to him the same way it was earlier that she shows that she wants to go, he goes back to his instinct, which is, let her go. Let her go.
Rider Strong
Let her be. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. So it's tense and silent until Sergeant Moore starts to laugh. Sean joins in, but admits, I don't know what we're laughing at. I'm very uncomfortable, sir. He responds, if you and Angela decide that you want to get married and you think you can take care of each other for the rest of your lives, then I'll step aside and let you be the most important man in her life. Sean realizes, I guess we're just two guys who love the same girl and want what's best for her. So at least he mentions, if you and Angela decide that that's what you want. Want meaning, like, if you're gonna propose to Angela and Angela's going to accept, then I'll say, go ahead and stay here. Don't come with me to Europe. Sean realizes, I guess we're just two guys who love the same girl and want what's best for her. Sergeant Moore tells him, well, then one of us better figure out what that is. On cue, Angela walks in to find the two of us figuring out.
Will Friedle
We decide and then tell her what she needs to do.
Rider Strong
And then tell her what she needs to do.
Danielle Fishel
Well, I think his point is he knows that marrying. That getting. Getting married is not what's best for Angela. Shawn doesn't. Shawn still seems to think that maybe that's what's best for her.
Rider Strong
See, I think a more interesting way for me to have played this scene and for the scene to be written is for me mid scene to realize that I could ask her to marry me and then that I ultimately don't want to. That.
Danielle Fishel
Right, right.
Rider Strong
That would have been more fun to see in real time, more dramatic to see in real time. If you watched me go, well, then screw it. I'm gonna marry her. And he goes, go ahead. And then she walks in, and I can't do it. Not because I just realize I don't actually want that. And you know what I mean? Like, that's a more interesting scene. Cause then you see. But instead, it's like we talk it all out. I don't know. It's like, again, they don't want anybody to be blameworthy, and no one makes any mis. Like, Sean has to be this sort of blameless. Sad sack. As opposed to a character who's making mistakes and who doesn't really want to marry someone. Somebody. It's like. It's like, he's got to be the victim.
Will Friedle
Julius was gonna ask. I hope. Julius. I was hoping Julius was gonna say, do you want to marry her?
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Rider Strong
Or what if he was more combative with me? Like, wouldn't that be a better scene if he was like, go ahead, kid. Like, what if we, like, got into it a little bit and we didn't, but instead, everybody's gotta be likable, and it's like the show has to make everybody passive and full of information and feelings and talking it out. So we get an essay instead of a scene. Like, the scene is, I'm not gonna let her go. And dramatically doing whatever occasion and making mistakes. And then. And, you know, I love your first
Danielle Fishel
pitch so much of saying, you know what? Cory and Topanga did it.
Narrator/Advertiser
We're.
Rider Strong
What if I.
Danielle Fishel
What if I proposed to her? And him saying, oh, I didn't. I didn't know you were ready to be a husband.
Rider Strong
You want.
Danielle Fishel
Do you want to marry my daughter? Why not?
Rider Strong
And I run. I rush her into another room. I start to do it, and we know it's coming, and we're like, oh, God, that's a bad idea, dude. And then I bail. And you see me realize why I have to bail without it being about Julius, without it just Shawn's journey and making mistakes. Yeah. I just don't know why they didn't. They didn't write to that energy anymore.
Danielle Fishel
It's like they wanted you to be a victim.
Rider Strong
Yeah, exactly. It was better for Sean to always be a victim. Such a.
Will Friedle
But they couldn't. They couldn't allow the victimhood to come from Angela.
Rider Strong
Right.
Danielle Fishel
Right.
Will Friedle
Nobody needs to be like.
Rider Strong
Everybody has to. This is like. Yeah. It's overwritten in that regard. You know what I mean? It's like, it's. It's bending over backwards to make everybody.
Danielle Fishel
Which also does sound a little maybe like a network note. Like. But we don't want her to. We don't. You know what I mean? Like, we're totally no network.
Will Friedle
You wonder if there was ever, like. You mean. You wonder if there was ever, like a. She's leaving, maybe for another dude.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah. Who knows?
Will Friedle
What if she met somebody and it's like, I'm leaving you, Sean. It's like, you can't. Can't have that.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Will Friedle
So, yeah, we need to bring in a third party to take some of the heat away from Angela. So if anybody thinks anybody's the bad person, it's this guest star that's the bad guy taking her away. As opposed to her actually saying, I want to leave.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. And yet, as a dad who just wants to be with his daughter, that's a. You can't buy that either, right?
Will Friedle
Exactly. Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
She asks what's going on? And they quickly disperse. Sean says nothing, and her dad claims they weren't even talking about her. Angela asks sean, you came to say goodbye to me? And Sean responds, no, no, I will never say goodbye to you. Because if I say goodbye to you, that's it. That's goodbye. Angela agrees, you're right. We should never say goodbye because we're going to write each other every day, we're going to call each other, and it will be like we've never even been apart. Shawn nods. Yes, exactly. We should never be apart. I love you. She tells him she loves him too. After a small glance at her dad, Shawn walks her toward the door and starts to explain. When you love somebody, Angela, it's okay to be a little selfish. She agrees and kisses him. Then she says, thank you for letting me be selfish. Shawn shakes his head. No, no, no. Not. Not you. Me. Look, there's something I gotta ask you right now. She smiles and finishes her thought, not catching the drift. You know, because you're the only person that knows how important it is for me and my dad to spend this time together. With more dramatic music, she starts to walk to her father. Shawn watches on as they put their arms around each other and Angela says, says, I only wish you and your dad had this time together. I'm so sorry you didn't. Thank you for giving me my chance. Shawn nods. He's emotional. I'm really happy for both of you. Angela makes her way back and asks, what was it that you wanted to ask me? He shrugs. Oh, never mind. I figured it out. Sergeant Moore nods his head, clearly touched. Knowing what Shawn is giving up, Angela lovingly rubs a hand across her boyfriend's face. Face. And I swear that it's not that she didn't catch the drift, but that she sees where this is going and she wants to make it clear.
Rider Strong
Yeah, that's. That's good. I. I don't. I didn't get that. But maybe it's.
Will Friedle
But that's why it felt manipulative to me a little bit. Because it's like when you're doing it for the first time in front of like I'm holding my dad, who's still alive. You lost your dad. Thank you for giving me this opportunity with my dad. I get it. But I would like to have seen. I think it would have been softer had it been her and Shawn having that conversation together without physically across the
Danielle Fishel
room from him to say sorry about your dad. Look at me with mine. I agree, that part feels a little
Will Friedle
harsh, but weird to me. That was it.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, It. The proximity to. Proximity to. To Sean would have been nice there, but I really do think she physically removed herself from him and brought herself to her dad because she wanted him to. She. Basically what she's saying is, don't do this, Shawn.
Will Friedle
I picked him.
Danielle Fishel
Don't make the selfish choice. Let me be selfish.
Will Friedle
I picked him.
Danielle Fishel
I pick him. And then she comes back and says, now, what did you want to ask?
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
So to me, there was more agency for her in the scene than was previously let on. And that previously, because she. She made her decision off camera. And in this kind of understated way, I was picking up on vibes that she was like, I got. I. I made this choice. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's. That is how I read it.
Will Friedle
I kind of read that. I've read that too. But that's why it felt very manipulative to me to walk over to her dad and was like, you know how your dad's dad.
Danielle Fishel
You're about to be manipulated by someone and you point out to them, don't manipulate me. Do you get to be called manipulative?
Will Friedle
But she said before in the previous scene, unless you tell me not to go.
Danielle Fishel
Right?
Will Friedle
So she literally says to him, if. Essentially, if you tell me I'm not gonna go somewhere not to go, I won't go. And then when he goes there to say, don't go, she stands next to her alive dad and says, it sucks your dad is dead. I'm holding on to mine. I. What did you want to say? And so it's like, well, then don't tell me to say. Like, stand up and say, I want to go. I'm going with my dad. I need to go with my dad. This is something that's important. Don't make it seem like it's my idea. And then when I go there and make a choice, make it as difficult on me as possible.
Danielle Fishel
She already told him she wanted to go. And he was like, okay, you should go. He was all excited. Then Corey talked him out of it. Now he's showing up again. And she's like, no, no, I made my choice.
Will Friedle
That's but this is why it's infuriating to me that they don't. You don't get a scene between the two of them. That's where it's like. It's supposed to be Sean and Angela. That's the point. Not Sean and Angela and her dad. Throwing that third person in there took away the scene. I wanted to see over the three seasons of this couple, four seasons getting back together again.
Danielle Fishel
It would be very easy for when Angela arrives for Sergeant Moore to be like, I'll. I'll give you gu some space. That's it. Yeah. He could have left the scene and he. Then he puts. Puts it on. Sean, are you gonna propose? I'll find out when. When I come back.
Will Friedle
He knows that she's made her decision. He's not gonna rub it in. He's not gonna be there to watch this guy get crushed. I'm just gonna give you guys a minute. Hey, let me go. I'm gonna bring some boxes down to the car or whatever. And then they have a scene. The two of them together was what I think this. That was missing for me. I wanted to see these characters say goodbye in a way. Like work through it together the way they have for seasons at this point.
Rider Strong
Then she would have to be a full fledged character.
Danielle Fishel
That's true. I know.
Will Friedle

Narrator/Advertiser
What?

What, what, what character.
Rider Strong
Two non characters having to have a moment to.
Danielle Fishel
And then the two ladies. I don't know, they say lady stuff. They say lady stuff about roomies and big beds and I don't know, there's something. Something about shoes. And then I graduate and. Oh Rachel. Okay, Jack walks up next. Wow, you are going to have a great time in Europe. I'm sure of it. Angela wishes they were coming with her. Jack admits, I wish too. But it's funny because I can't really afford to go anywhere anymore. His voice breaks as he tries to console himself. Oh Jack. Rachel consoles him as he weeps. Next, Eric walks up to her with arms wide open. Angela. She responds. Response.
Rider Strong
Eric.
Danielle Fishel
He instructs her. Angela, come on. And pulls her in for a hug. Let it out girl. Let it out. She laughs, uncomfortable. She's like, what are we doing?
Will Friedle
Trina looked really.
Rider Strong
Her line is like, you're touching me.
Will Friedle
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
She laughs and politely pushes him away. Eric, we're touching. He starts to sing as she laughs. Ooh child, things are gonna get easier. Ooh Chad, things will get brighter. He encourages her to slow down. Dance. Come on, move with me. They start to sway. Meanwhile, Jack is still moping. How am I supposed to survive without money? Rachel tells him he's just going to have to scale it down. No more fancy restaurants, designer clothes or fifty dollar haircuts. Jack touches his hair in disbelief and gasps. But that's Jack. I can't do that to Jack. She smirks. You're really desperate, aren't you? It's kind of fun. We cut back to Eric and Angela, and Eric is now holding hundreds of his head headshots. He instructs Angela to hand them out to all the European girls, and if they want him to be their American boyfriend, his number is right at the bottom of the picture. The prisoners hoot and holler all over his lines, but Angela laughs at his determination. I've only got 500, so don't be handing them out to any hairy chicks, all right? Angela quickly hands off the 500 headshots to a random passerby and then makes her way over to Sean and Corey. She asks, is she gonna make it? Corey assures her, yeah, yeah, she'll make it. She's been busy lately doing. Doing. I don't know, something. Angela earnestly thanks him. Corey asks, for what? And Angela explains, for being my friend, believing in me and Sean as much as you believe in you and Topanga. I owe you. And then a panicked Topanga comes running in. Where is she? Where is she? Angela shouts, Topanga. And they give each other a big hug. Topanga says, I was afraid I wasn't going to make it. I'm going to miss you so much. Angela wonders, what am I going to do without my best friend? Topanga assures her, you're gonna do great. Send me shoes. Corey perks up at this and gives Shawn a look. Then Sergeant Moore comes walking in. The cab is waiting. And so Angela makes her way over to Shawn for one last time. Let's not say goodbye. Let's just say I love you. He painfully responds, I love you, too. I always will. They give each other one last hug, and as she walks away from him, Shawn tells Sergeant Moore to take good care of her. He smiles. You're a good man, Sean. Thank you for giving me and my daughter this chance. Shawn responds, well, I know how important it is. The father and daughter head out, and an emotional Angela watches Shawn as she leaves. Once she's out of sight, Shawn finally says to himself, goodbye, Angela. Corey consoles him by saying, don't spin out of control. Okay. Then Topanga breaks the silence and news to Corey, I got that Brown Elliott internship. Corey turns to her.
Will Friedle
Huh?
Danielle Fishel
Topanga continues, they offered me a scholarship at NYU Law School, and they told me once I graduate and pass the bar, they'd like me to work for their firm. Corey's completely caught off guard. What are. Who. Where is this coming from? You. What are you. What have you been doing? Topanga tells him they have to Move to New York. And Sean grabs Corey's shoulder to console him. Don't spin out of control. Just as Corey starts convulsing, he loses it, shaking and shouting, why? Why, why? Why did no one tell me? Someone's always got to tell Corey. He falls to his knees, grabbing onto his wife and best friend. Why, God?

Like, but then the next episode is called. Okay.
Rider Strong
Brave New World Part one. Kind of Brave New World Part one.
Danielle Fishel
It's kind of part. And part one and two aired on the same night as an hour. So it was kind of a two part finale. The first part of the finale was 30 minutes. The last part of the finale was an hour, which is why it's this one is to be continued. And then Brave New World Part one, Brave New World Part two. Let's combine those kind of into being one episode. Okay, well, our next episode, season seven, episode 22, Brave New World, part one, it originally aired May 5, 2000. That's my birthday day.

That was a trivia question. I thought the question was going to be, when was Danielle Fishel's birthday? And you were excited that you got that right.
Danielle Fishel
No, the trivia question was, when did it air? And I was like, I know this because it was my birthday. Also, one of my favorite moments was in a movie theater when a movie trailer played and then the date popped up and it was like June 7th and someone yelled, that's my birthday. As loud as they possibly could. And I just love it. I love it so much. So I do that now. Anytime my birthday's mentioned, Anytime my birthday's mentioned, I go, that's my birthday.
Rider Strong
Gotta find those birthday siblings out there.
Danielle Fishel

Podcast Description: The trio revisits every episode of “Boy Meets World,” sharing memories, behind-the-scenes stories, and critical reflection.
This episode dives deep into Season 7, Episode 21 of Boy Meets World: "Angela’s Ashes." The central focus is the significant departure of Angela, a beloved character, as the show nears its finale. Hosts Danielle, Rider, and Will reflect on the episode’s narrative structure, the decision-making dynamic surrounding Angela's exit, and broader show legacy questions. They also discuss memorable guest star Julius Carry and lament the ways both character and story arcs were handled at the end of the series.
“They're doing so much work for the show as far as establishing the friendships. Also, it's shot on film, so it looks more real. …It has this, this like archival quality.” (03:47)
“I want it and I want it bad.” (17:03)
“It’s a wonderful coffee table book. I really think it makes a great gift for any Boy Meets World fan…” (20:18)
“If you preorder one … it goes toward helping us get on The New York Times bestselling author list…” (16:44)
“…My problem is it harkens back to the other Angela episode. It's like two guys fighting over Angela's future and making decisions for her. That is like the big bummer takeaway for me.” (27:30)
“I thought it was a weird way to get rid of the Angela character…” (29:00)
“You gotta give her the illusion of making her own decision… and let her go through her process… But she will ultimately do exactly what you want.” (60:43 – Rider)
“Opening credits have gotten so important… the paratexts are defining the text almost more than the text itself. That the trailers, the interviews… They’re almost eclipsing the actual text.” (06:00)
“People do not read the article. They only read the headline.” (06:41)
“It's an infantilizing binary… The show is like: 'You have to choose between your man… or your dad, which at age 22… that's crazy to me.'” (32:54)
“They took that POV every single time. …That is the boy meeting the world…” (35:10)
“[Angela’s departure] was not given any credence in this episode. It was like... ’By Angela.’” (52:03)
“You’ve gotta give her the illusion of making her own decision… but she will ultimately do exactly what you want.” (60:43)
“That is just. That's exactly who Corey is. We're not reading into it. …He is a manipulator. Believe what he says. …This is the final culmination of Corey telling you... I will believe him.” (61:39)
“He's not obfuscating anymore. …You've got to manipulate her to do what you want.” (61:53)
“You don’t get a scene between [Shawn and Angela]… That was missing for me. I wanted to see these characters say goodbye in a way, like work through it together the way they have for seasons at this point.” (92:41)
“It was better for Sean to always be a victim. …They couldn’t allow the victimhood to come from Angela.” (87:23, 87:28)
