The funny thing is that what they said was they had always watched it in Spanish and. And they thought we were all speaking Spanish. And then they watched, they heard it in English and they were like, that's not what they sound like. Like, they are voices to them in what we really sound like. I wanted to go for my 40th birthday. That was our plan for my 40th birthday. And then I was pregnant and I was like, I don't want to go to Japan pregnant. No, I didn't want to do all the walking. It was also my pregnancy with Keaton, and so after my pregnancy with Adler going into labor early, I was like, I'm not going to take any chances of.

I did. Some people don't because the risk for, you know, infection. But I was told by my doctor that as long as I was eating from a reputable place that I had been to before, basically no 711 sushi, although I know they have better, stronger, you know, rules, whatever, just as long as it was from a reputable place, I didn't have to worry about it. But everybody makes their own decisions. Of course, when you're pregnant, it's up to you. I ate both deli meat and sushi while I was pregnant, but I didn't want to, like, eat it for ten days straight.

And I think we actually are at our like 30th anniversary. I think that's coming up. But yeah, you know, it didn't. I don't think it made a big splash at the box office. I think I definitely. I think I definitely remember seeing it at like a two, two for one matinee screening. Like, you know, I don't think it but it's one of those that seems to sort of. It seems to have endured. And I have to. I had to cram for this one, you guys. I was not. I'm not as prepared as I was the last time I was watching it. Finishing it up literally an hour ago. Just like, I just had an allergy.

But, yeah, we haven't. Yeah, we haven't all been to. Been together. No.

As a kid. Did you read the Baby Sitters Club book series?

I. Yeah, I was also gonna say, I think, like, it's also the enduring appeal also of, like, these story, you know, and this setup that feels kind of like still very, like, revolutionary from, like, a feminist lens throughout in the 80s, you know, of course, it's also like capitalism.

Of course.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Of course they're entrepreneurs, and they're making it work. I do love that moment at the end where they're like. They're like, we made $100. But I think I wasn't quite as obsessed with the books until we started auditioning and then filming. And then definitely once we were filming and are like, you know, in my, like, research of it, like, I read all the dawn books I could get my hands on for sure. And, like, all the. They had those, like, super mysteries or, like, you know, so I was. I was definitely into. Into all of those.

I bet we could find you one in the fan base knows that there's a book about wizards somewhere in Babysitter's Club. Over. Yeah, no, there's. It'll be from each character's perspective. Like, there will be. It's like, still all of the babysitters, but it goes through. It cycles through each character from their perspective and the story as they see it.

For reference, in case people don't know, Tell us, Danielle. The Babysitters Club book series was a worldwide phenomenon. Written by Ann M. Martin, they were published between 1986 and the year 2000. The series consists of 60 to 80 novels written by Martin, and it sold almost 200 million copies. It was conceived by Scholastic after a different book about babysitters had seen a spike in sales.

So no wonder there's that capitalist. Yeah, no wonder. Yeah, exactly. What was that one?

They're still really popular. We were watching the movie with Indy last night, and he was like, oh, yeah, she has diabetes. I know that. I was like, he like new characters. He knew which ones were the new Netflix show. I don't think so. No, he. He went through a phase where he read a couple of the books, I want to say, like, two years ago, like, you know, got him out of the school library. They're still popular. Yeah.

Marissa, do you remember auditioning for this movie? It must have been extremely competitive.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I do remember auditioning for this movie because I think it was in between the first and the second season of Alex Mack. Like, if I remember my own age, I believe it was around there. So I think, you know, I say this because the times that this has happened, you know, are not the usual. I. I think I was, like, pretty wanted, like, in general.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah, you were a commodity.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Well, you know, it's. You know, there's brief moments in time. I can remember being, like. I think I was a wee in demand. Yeah. But I. So I do remember sort of being in the mix and reading for Christy, Stacy and Dawn.

[Ryder Strong]

I was gonna say they probably just kept auditioning and mixed and.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah. And I definitely want it to be Dawn. I think I just. I felt closer to her, and I felt really close to her storyline in the movie. And also, I didn't want to kiss a boy.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Ryder Strong]

Save that for Boy Meets World.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Right? This is definitely, like, you know, I was 13, so it was 94.

[Ryder Strong]

Five, I feel like. Yeah, 94, 95. Because.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah, so it was. It would have been like, you know, before, like maybe a year before I had done boy. So there's a big difference between 13 and 14.

[Danielle Fishel]

Totally.

[Marla Sokoloff]

And I definitely. I was actually laughing at, like, whatever improv there was where, like, you know, I get the hand on my shoulder.

[Danielle Fishel]

I saw that. And you're like.

[Marla Sokoloff]

But also, I was boy obsessed, too, which is so funny.

[Danielle Fishel]

Listen, we were exactly the same. I was so, so boy obsessed. But I didn't want to actually kiss one. I wanted to think about kissing one. Yeah. The actual doing of it. Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I wanted to dream about it and kiss my palm.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Like, kiss the. Kiss the back of my hand and pretend and, like, have, you know, posters on my walls with the idea of an actual human boy was, like, terrifying to me. So I didn't want to have to kiss a boy like Stacy did. And then with the Christie stuff. This is so funny, you guys. I really remember being like. That's a lot of heavy lifting.

[Danielle Fishel]

It's a lot of acting in that. Yeah, it's true.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Gosh, I really think I'm getting goosebumps right now because I really think Skyler was so. It's so fantastic. And there's so much of what she had to go through in this movie that just breaks my heart on so many levels. But I remember just kind of being, like, being like. That seems. That seems like a lot of work. And I, you know, I. It is still. It is still very much my sweet spot. I'd like being. I like being a solid number four on the call sheet.

[Danielle Fishel]

That's where you're the happiest shooting for the middle.

[Will Friedle]

Just shooting for the middle.

Because I was already doing Alex Mack, and I was just like. I was like, I want this to feel like a vacation. And it did. I got to have a vacation.

It's like. And I feel like I was on set, even though I was nowhere near it. Where did you guys film? Were you in la or you're in Pasadena? Pasadena.

That's what I thought. I was like, it looks like Pasadena. And then. Yeah, I just knew everybody. It's so weird.

I had never seen this Movie, obviously. I just remember her from one of the creepiest Law and Order esque vu episodes ever where she's in a relationship with her dad. So it's like those in a relationship.

They were. She was pregnant with her dad's baby.

They were in love, Danielle. And it was real.

I know. There's some moments, some. There's some weird moments. Let's jump into our synopsis. A group of teenage girlfriends run a summer day camp while navigating crushes, family drama and growing pains while being 12.

That's, you know, it's like they're running a business, they're babysitting and they're all like. I was like, oh my God. They're all like 12.

[Ryder Strong]

I was looking at this camp going, this would be the hardest job ever.

[Danielle Fishel]

Like these, ever.

[Ryder Strong]

These girls are working and they're like barely older than the kids are taking care of.

[Danielle Fishel]

I know, I know. You got to really love kids too. God. This would have been Danielle's little Danielle's dream, by the way.

[Ryder Strong]

Oh, really?

Yeah.

That's such an 80s and 90s thing though. It's like I'm just going to go drop my kid off with these 12 year olds. They'll take care of 12 year old.

The movie was released in theaters on August 16, 1995. One of the two new films that debuted that weekend. Does anyone know what the other movie was?

That's right. Mortal Kombat. Both movies did not live up to their pre release hype. Babysitters Club came in ninth that weekend with just $3 million at the box office. Mortal Kombat finished just one ahead at eighth Club finished its theatrical run with a total domestic gross of just under 10 million.

[Ryder Strong]

Do we know what the budget was?

[Danielle Fishel]

Keep in mind it only cost six and a half million to make. At least it didn't lose money.

[Ryder Strong]

Wow.

[Marla Sokoloff]

It felt so much more high budget than that to me.

[Danielle Fishel]

I really did.

[Ryder Strong]

I watching it, I was like, oh, this is a 10 to 20 million dollars movie shot on film. I was like, this was a big.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Thing and so many of us. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's. That's impressive.

[Danielle Fishel]

Actually, that's pretty good. I know. Very impressive. Larissa, do you remember seeing it in theaters?

[Marla Sokoloff]

This is one of the only. Okay, so I think this is the only movie premiere I've ever been to for something of mine because we didn't have one for 10 things. And so this. So this was like the movie premiere and they went all out. It was crazy. It was on the Paramount lot. They, like, we all arrived in school buses. It was like a huge carnival. It was so fun. So I think that must have been the first time that I saw it. And then. And then, yes, I definitely. The experience that I had of actually seeing it in a movie theater was, I think during Alex Smack, it would have been in Valencia and there was like a two for one screening at one of the movie theaters there.

[Danielle Fishel]

You were like, I'll go.

[Will Friedle]

Did you see Mortal Kombat?

[Marla Sokoloff]

I don't think I did.

He also directed me in an episode of Pretty Little Liars, which was fun.

Freaky Friday should be on your list because that's also Marla and Natanya and Andrew, I think.

Yeah. It was written by Dalene Young and the original Babysitters Club writer Ann M. Martin also got credit for her charact characters. Dalene is another actress who moonlit behind the camera. She wrote dozens of TV movies including titles like Panic and Echo Park, Dead Man's Curve and Marilyn the Untold Story. She also appeared on camera just a few years ago in Pig, a critically beloved Nick Cage truffle hunter movie where she played Jezebel. Sadly, Dalene passed away just this May. She was 85 years old.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Oh, my goodness.

[Danielle Fishel]

So. Starring Rachel Leigh Cook as Marianne. Rachel is best known for movies like she's all that Tom and Huck and Josie and the Pussycats. But I believe this was her first, like, big job ever.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah, she. I don't. I can't remember if she had just done Tom and Huck or had gotten it right afterwards.

[Danielle Fishel]

Okay. Right around the time of booking. Tom and Huck.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

And then our pal here, Larissa Oleynik, plays Dawn. You know Larissa from movies like 10 Things I Hate about yout, 3rd Rock from the sun and is the titular iconic character in the Secret World of Alex Mack. And then we have Skyler Fisk is Christy. Skyler is most recognizable from the movies Orange county and Snow Day. And Brie Blair plays Stacy. This was also Brie's first job, and she went on to do a ton of tv. You may have seen her on swat, Narcos, or Grey's Anatomy. And we mentioned them before, and we're going to hear directly from them a little bit later. Marla Sokoloff is Cookie Mason. Cookie. Cookie. What a name. Cokie. Marla Sokoloff is Cokey Mason. And Natania Ross plays Grace, the two of the Resting Face bullies. We have interviewed both of them here on Pod Meets World in the past, so go check out their episodes if you'd like to know a little more about them. And you should. They are both fascinating women. So, Larissa, please tell us everything about filming this with all of these girls. Are you guys all the same? You guys are all about the same age, right?

Roughly. Trisha, who played Claudia, was a little bit older. She was like 17 or 18. And I think. I don't think she stayed in the hotel, but the rest. And then Zelda was significantly younger. I think she was maybe only nine. She was. She was young and young, but also, like, so why. And she had already done Crooklyn, so we were. Yeah, we were like. We were like, oh, you, hello. You are an actor who has been in movies. And so. But so we were all staying at a hotel in Pasadena. And, like, I want to say it was a Radisson, but I just remember it was one of those where it kind of like circled around, and then the lobby was in the middle and there was a pool.

[Danielle Fishel]

And.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Like, honestly, we just had so much fun. Again, I can't speak for. I do know that, you know, Skyler had a lot more to do than the rest of us.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

But, I mean, it really did. It really is. It Is one of those that it truly felt like summer camp. And I think the amazing thing about having Melanie at the helm is that, like, you know, there's some. There's some. It gets off to a bit of a clunky start. And it's like, I remember when you're talking about the budget and all of these kids in these locations, like, it was definitely chaotic. Like, she had a lot to wrangle. She got a lot to wrangle.

[Ryder Strong]

And I think any given scene would have like eight of you and like, be done in one shot. And I'm just like, oh, my God, this is the. Coordinating. All of this must have been insane.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah, I think her editing process must have been. I've never actually asked her about it, but I was just watching it thinking, like, her editing process must. Must have been a little tricky. But her, like, the main, like, the main thing that she, like right from the jump was like, she just wanted. It has this heart, you know, it has this heart to it. It's. It's rare, I think, to see something so earnest and genuine. And that was because we all felt so safe.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Not only is this a woman directing this, this is a woman who's an actor who understands what this feels like. She was like. I mean, even. There's a lot of just little things that I picked up on, but that I was like. Was like, oh, that was us being, like, really protected. But yeah, it just felt like an extremely safe environment to have a lot of fun and really bond. Like, really, really bond. I don't. I think literally the only drama there might have been, you know, some interpersonal stuff here and there, but the only real drama was about the hair because we all had to look like the characters in the book. And it was a constant process dealing with the hair because, you know, I. Skyler's normally a redhead, and then Stacy, who plays Mallory, is normally blonde. Bri was in curlers all the time and I had extensions and, you know, they were having to dye my hair like every two weeks or something like that. But, yeah, it just. It truly is. It truly is one of those. Those experiences that I have nothing but positive. Positive memories of. Nothing but positive memories. And. And when we're filming all that stuff at the end, I do believe that was the end of the shoot and we were true. We were crying. We were crying because we were sad to leave each other.

[Will Friedle]

Now, when you're doing a movie that's based on such a huge, like, international best selling series of books, is the author of the the novel. Was she on set and involved in any way, shape or form or was it just kind of like you sign it over and you walk away?

[Marla Sokoloff]

I think she had to give final approval on all of us, certainly. And I mean, maybe of the film, but I don't really remember her being there. I think she was much more involved with the Netflix show. But yeah, the only thing I remember, the only thing I really remember being like hyper specific around that was the look of the characters and making sure that we all looked like what people wanted us to look like. Which. Yeah, but yeah, I think we, I think, you know, I'm sure we spent a fair amount of time on character work and relationship building and. But we had the books, you know, we had the books. So I mean, for me, that's all I ever want. I'm like, oh, you're telling me my research is that I have to do whatever I know.

[Danielle Fishel]

Oh, the best.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

There were also two actresses with recognizable names who appear in the film. Annie and Lily Costner. And yes, Kevin Costner's kids.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah.

Yeah. They're sweet. They were sweet. They're really, really sweet.

Girls don't play sports, but her style is pretty iconic. Very tomboy, almost Bart Simpson esque. Kristi explains. The Babysitters Club is a famous local network of seven young girls. She's already drawn up budgets and schedules to pass out, and just like that, she wins them over. It's the paperwork. Little girls love paperwork. You hand some paperwork, they're going to think it's genius. And so the babysitters club Camp has begun. And Christie's back backyard. The girls set up a dance area, a sports area, a tent for first aid and arts and crafts. And like all good entrepreneurial teens, they remember to include bathrooms.

Wait a second. I'm sorry. Isn't it Dawn's backyard?

It is. It's Don and Marianne's backyard.

It was Dawn's backyard because she comes. Her father was the lawyer, and they have to sign all the paperwork to use the backyard because her dad's the lawyer.

You have no idea how much this brought me back to childhood. We got a trampoline one year, and my dad originally wasn't going to let anybody on unless they signed a waiver. Wow.

Well, it's just the Marla part of it. It's true that, like, I mean, that it was a big deal, Ryder, for us to have all been, like, in this acting class in Berkeley and know each other from there and then travel together down to La Oaks, all go to the Oakwoods. Yep, it was. I mean, and it.

[Ryder Strong]

We were a unit.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah, it's true. It made it. It made a big difference in my experience on that set and on your set, to be like. To be like, okay, well, I've known this person for a really long time. There's just something about knowing it's what we're experiencing right now. Like. Yeah, you know, I was. It's what I was experiencing. I was texting Rachel earlier. It's like when you've known someone for this long, it's just. It's just different. It's just different. And that is so. That's so sweet of Marla. Well, we. I have some fun. Yeah, that luckily shouldn't bring up how much tequila I had that night.

[Will Friedle]

I was just about to say you looked really nervous that she was going to say something.

[Danielle Fishel]

She mentioned fast food, no tequila.

[Marla Sokoloff]

What was it? Oh, yeah, we. We. The last time I saw her was at. I don't think you shouldn't mind us saying it was at Natania's wedding, which.

[Danielle Fishel]

Was a couple years.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah, we got to. We were dates to that.

[Danielle Fishel]

Right Koki uses Grace and Bebe to distract Marianne and flirt with Logan. But it doesn't work when Marianne catches them and they all insult each other like little babysitting battle rappers. But when Koki offers him Smashing Pumpkins tickets, who can say no to that?

[Will Friedle]

His head turns quick. His head turns quick for a little Billy Corgan action right there. Just boom. I'm out.

There is some trouble in paradise.

Yeah.

Elsewhere, the girls are distributing advertisements for the summer camp. They even perform payola by trading radio air time for five hours of babysitting. Now, at a beautiful neon drive up diner where Cokie works on roller skates, the BSC are hanging out and talking about Christie's upcoming birthday party and the camp. They're charging $250 per camper and hoping to make 7, $500 to open up their own official office with a fax machine.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

So far only 12 kids have signed up. Then Cokie coasts by to rub her Smashing Pumpkins date with Logan and Marianne's face, commenting on how outrageous her outfit is gonna be. Cokey Cokey came to win. In an attempt to calm the tensions, Christy tries to call a truce with Koki and invites her to an annual BSC party tomorrow night at the park. But yet, the next day, bully Cokie and her friends arrive at said park party only to be drenched by sprinklers instead. Womp, womp.

[Ryder Strong]

Think about some memories from babysitters club. Well, one, Larissa and I were so stoked to get a movie together. It was probably, I think it was in the middle of season two and three of Alex Mack. So we were locked in. We were like already best friends. So to go from that to this really high budget feature film, first one for both of us. I say it all the time, it's so cheesy, but baby Sears Club is such a beautiful coming of age movie and it really was such a beautiful coming of age time for all of us that were in the movie. Just to give a little like behind the scenes tea. My very first boyfriend was actually Austin o' Brien who played Logan, which was. Yeah, that would have been Rachel Leigh Cook's boyfriend in the movie. Of course, everybody made fun of us for it and it was this cute little thing and it was innocent and we would just hold hands in between scenes. And I do remember there was one scene where him and Rachel, they had to kiss in the scene, man, I was a wreck. And of course, I stayed away and I stayed in the school room and refused to be anyone anywhere near that setup. When they were doing that, I will say everybody, like, in the school room, I know everybody was listening to the new live album or Nirvana, Hole, all of the things. And I was obsessed, too, believe me. I had every single one of those albums, but I was like, extra obsessed with TLC at that time. I've always been like a hip hop girl. So I had Sexy, Crazy Cool playing on repeat in my little walk. Man, we are all so old now. I told you. Austin was my very first boyfriend ever. And he was also my first kiss. So at the wrap party for Babysitters Club, we did it at Pickwick Bowling Alley, which is in Burbank. When it was time to go, we kind of like snuck out to the parking lot and we kissed for the first time. And of course, I was madly in love. And that was back in the time when we had pagers. So Austin and I had our own little pager code. I will never Forget. It was 27, 34, 5. That was because those were our favorite tracks on the live album.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

It was just such a beautiful time, such a beautiful movie. I'm so, so blown away by how many fans the movie still has. I love you all.

That's funny. I knew that they were dating. I mean, I was. I. That's. I wasn't. I wasn't going to say anything about it, but I knew they were doing what. I didn't know it was that intense.

I think I know. And I think. I'm sure more than one of us had a crush on Austin. But. Yeah, that's so funny that she said it did. It felt like. It felt like a real big budget for us. We were like, yeah. We were like, we're here eating this catering.

So was everybody's parents on set, too? Like, they were. All the moms were around. Oh, my God. Wow.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

You're lucky you didn't have more drama then, actually, like, when you just bring that many child actors and their parents together, it's. It's like it could be really bad.

[Will Friedle]

And what, 30 little kid extras. I mean, it could have been just mayhem. Yeah. Unbelievable.

[Danielle Fishel]

Well, then it's the official first day of the BSC summer camp and things look pretty busy. They hand out advertising potholders, you know, cuz kids love potholders. The girls think they have everything covered, but that darn neighbor is now very concerned. And when things couldn't get worse, Allan the Neb Gray arrives. He is a dorky boy who's friends with Logan and dressed like he's taking tickets at a circus for Amish people.

[Will Friedle]

Like, who dressed this guy? It's like, what are you wearing?

[Ryder Strong]

I felt like this character could have been inspired by Shiloh Strong.

[Danielle Fishel]

There is. It says in my paperwork there is no way Shiloh didn't audition for this. Right thing.

[Ryder Strong]

We all thought the same thing. But yes. No, he was totally like the suspenders and like Shiloh would have been wearing a bowler hat and like juggling. I was like, oh, yeah, yeah, this. I totally get this guy.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I mean, like a, like, like, like, like a Henley shirt. Like a pretty, like. I don't know. I was into it.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Hottie. Hot, hot.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I was fully into the styling. Yeah. I love all the costumes in this movie, honestly.

[Danielle Fishel]

Oh, the wardrobe's great. Lots of vest. Lots of vests over other shirts, which made me go, do I need to be wearing vests?

[Marla Sokoloff]

Can we bring back the vest?

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah, I might. I might need to do it. Well, the Neb wants to help, so they hire the dweeb as an unplayed unpaid employee. And now, on their way home, Marianne and Christy are talking about this Logan and Cokie issue. He rejected the date, but Christy thinks Marianne still has to stand up for herself. And when Marianne leaves, Christy is surprised by her estranged dad. He drops a bombshell. He might be moving back. He has a shot at getting a newspaper job in town, but doesn't want Christy to tell her mom yet. He has an unshaven face and an unkept in an unkempt VW van. So yeah, that Van. Do not trust him.

[Ryder Strong]

No, he is a loser. I, I really did want his van, though.

[Danielle Fishel]

I was like, I know you did, Van.

[Ryder Strong]

It's pretty nice.

[Will Friedle]

I'm hoping you guys are going to let me, because I, I think I missed something. I get why she didn't. Or he didn't want her to say anything to her mom, but I didn't get why she couldn't tell her friends. Did I miss that?

[Danielle Fishel]

I don't even know why she doesn't want to tell her mom.

[Ryder Strong]

I literally had to have the conversation with Indy. I was like, if an adult ever wants you to keep a secret, you tell me or mom or anybody. You tell everybody. I was like, yeah, no adult should be asking a kid to keep a secret for them.

[Will Friedle]

I'm like, I mean, again, it's weird. I, I, But I get the, hey, I don't tell your mama. Like, I got that at least made.

[Ryder Strong]

A little bit of sense, but for.

[Will Friedle]

Like, I didn't understand about not telling her friends.

[Danielle Fishel]

That rule is like a gift. Like, if Jensen wants to take the boys to go buy me a Mother's Day gift, like, being like, it's a surprise.

[Ryder Strong]

Andy asked about that. He's like, well, what if I, you know? I was like, oh, well, then it's, you know, that's a surprise. It's a delayed. But if you're, like, asked to keep a secret, like, don't tell anybody about that. Like, from an adult, double it up to where you're.

[Will Friedle]

You're asked to keep a secret by somebody with a van.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Will Friedle]

Now, this is not a good thing. This is a double double. Tell an adult immediately. Yeah.

[Ryder Strong]

Yeah. It was hard to see the. I mean, I think the point is that she, you know, like, when they play baseball and like, you're supposed. But, like, there was never. I. There wasn't enough, like, likability on the dad's part that I was like, this is a relationship with worth screwing over everybody in your life for.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Oh, my God. Wait. I. That's so. That is so interesting. I mean, but that's her. But it's her dad.

[Will Friedle]

I know, but why can't you, why don't you tell your friends my dad's back in town. Please don't tell my mom. But my. I mean, it's like, I get not telling your mom, but why keep it from all of her friends? That I didn't understand.

[Marla Sokoloff]

She's so, I mean, even though she has this. Oh, my God, I'm. We're going to get into it. Even though she has a stepfather who, like, that's, that's, that's also one of the, the things that's, like, so interesting that it's like, it's like she knows that the stepfather is, like, the real deal and is totally there for her. And she has that beautiful scene with Brooke Adams at the end about, like, you guys love me differently than the way he does. But, like, she's so starved for this.

[Danielle Fishel]

Relationship, and she's been let down so many times.

[Marla Sokoloff]

And that's what's so, like, heartbreaking. To me that her coming of age story happens is like go. It's like going from a girl to a woman disappointed by your father. Someone who's supposed to be there for you.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

And having to like parent yourself through this and I think so heartbreaking for me about him too and his character. Is that like the reason why he needs her to keep it a secret is because he knows he's disappointing.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

He knows he's effed up like over and over and over again. And it's like. And still at the end of the day it's like, yeah. She has to be the more mature one.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. Yeah. So sad.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Gets me. But I mean, Peter Horton is a dream. You're not charmed. I'm so charmed.

[Danielle Fishel]

That night, Christy brings along Marianne to have dinner at her dad's sand sad VW van. They eat pancakes shaped like mice. And Christy wants to know when he plans on calling her mom. Patrick says he wants to at least have a job before he tells her, which shouldn't be long. And he has a gift for Christy. It's a bohemian dress dress, which doesn't really fit her tomboy style, but it's the thought that counts. Later that night, Christy makes Marianne promise not to say anything to anyone about her dad. The next day at camp, Logan and Marianne are back at it about the whole Cokie thing. He swears he would never go out with her. And we get our first kiss.

[Marla Sokoloff]

How did that feel?

[Danielle Fishel]

[Marla Sokoloff]

The kiss.

[Danielle Fishel]

Oh, do you remember? I mean you. So it's been revealed that Natania was date. Had her first boyfriend on the set. Did anybody? Was anybody else dating? Oh, can't tell us. Oh, what?

[Will Friedle]

Somebody was dating Luca. Somebody's dating the guy who played Luca. That's what it is.

[Marla Sokoloff]

He was like 19. He legitimately. And he and I had talked. I mean, oh boy, that actor has passed. So we'll be, we'll be respectful. We can still make fun of the storyline though because I think he and I had worked on something thing together recently and like I. He was like, he was like. I was so uncomfortable being like being like a 19 year old man amidst all of these like 13 year old girls and having to kiss a fort Brie was actually seen and he was like.

[Ryder Strong]

Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

It's camp sports day. Which for some reason involves slingshotting items into the neighbor's yard. Koki shows up at camp to distract Logan and her hench. Women drop a smoke bomb in the yard but forget to detonate it. So when the kids slingshot it over the fence. They are really pushing it with the neighbor, who is engulfed in smoke. Also, this Logan is still flirting with Koki like a real player. Christy suspiciously leaves camp early, forcing Jackie to practice softball on his own. And when she hops into her dad's creepy van, everyone thinks she has a boyfriend. Which seems like a tough storyline. But I. I do have to tell you that my dad used to travel a lot when I was 18, a kid. And when I was in sixth grade, we had just moved from Orange county to Calabasas, and I was going to A.E. wright, and my dad had been on a really long work trip. And when he came back, he surprised me at school by picking me up to take me to lunch. And he got out of the car. I saw him across the parking lot, ran, jumped into his arms, took. Then he's like, come on, we're gonna go get lunch. And I took my backpack and I hopped in the car and we drove away. And then the next day, everyone was like, who's your boyfriend? Who can drive? Who's your boyfriend? Danielle, did you know Danielle's boyfriend? I'm like, what? What are you talking. I had no idea what they were even talking about. I was like, what boyfriend? I don't. I don't have a boyfriend. They were like, the guy. The hot guy who came and picked you up yesterday. I was like, it was my dad. So it's a weird storyline, but it does happen.

[Ryder Strong]

Very realistic.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yes. Instead of just ignoring her friend's questions about this mysterious man, Marianne says she can't say anything about it. It. Which makes it even weirder. And that's when the neighbor, Mrs. Haberman, appears. She's had enough and she's going crazy. She gives them an official warning, and if there's any more trouble, she will call the city and have their permit revoked. But based on their reactions, it seems like maybe they don't have any permits.

[Will Friedle]

I can't get over the number of jelly donuts wasted that they were shooting over the fence. That. That's going to stick with me for the whole movie. I was like, what are you doing? What are you doing?

[Danielle Fishel]

Koki overhears everything, which seems like trouble. Claudia continues to focus on drawing in the club. Instead of her summer school workload, she's stepped up for the preoccupied Christie. Claude even found an abandoned greenhouse. She made a deal with the city. If they can fix it up, they can use it as an office. These girls sure know how to work through infrastructural red tape.

[Will Friedle]

Yeah, a lot of stuff with the municipality and going cutting through the greenhouse. Wow. Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

The next day at camp, it's full on chaotic food fight in the cafeteria and every camper gets a timeout. So at the end of the camp day, the girls are exhausted. Stacy had another great date with Luca, but Christy continues to drop the ball as president. That night, Stacy is at home having a panic attack about not having anything to wear for another date with Luca. She's so stressed, she's not even eating, which is really testing her diabetes. Luca eventually arrives and says this. Hi.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Hi.

[Danielle Fishel]

Come on in. You look smashing. Smashing.

[Will Friedle]

He looks smashing.

[Danielle Fishel]

He wants to go on a hike, which is not something city girl Stacy has ever done before. But teen love will make you do weird things. Out on the hike, Luca talks about his band, the Dogs, and then Stacy lays on the ground. It's not just because of the bad news that her crush is likely in a terrible band. It's also that she needs something to eat. Eat. She's losing energy and now almost passed out. Stacy decides to tell Luca she's diabetic.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Which is more egregious? That he's 19 or that he's talking about his band? On the Terrible.

[Danielle Fishel]

Terrible.

[Marla Sokoloff]

She has no escape route.

[Danielle Fishel]

Let me tell you about my band.

[Will Friedle]

Please. I can't go anywhere.

It could have been good. The dogs had to run there for a while.

Well, thankfully her diabetes doesn't bother him. He still thinks she's beautiful. Elsewhere, Christy is on her way to play some baseball with dad and changes into the dress at the greenhouse. She doesn't remember her dad being this much fun, but it's all been going great. Except he continues to be vague about the job hunt. And in all the excitement, she's missed a babysitters club meeting. For the first time ever, Claudia steps in to run the meeting just as Christy comes running in. The first order of business is the new issue with Mrs. Haberman and the city permit they don't have. Christy promises they don't need a permit, but her not being there to fight back with the neighbor didn't help anyone. Christy says she'll handle it all. The girls peel out one by one. The next day, construction starts on the greenhouse. All the kids are working hard, except for Koki and her friends, who watch on like haters. All the while, the guilt is getting.

[Ryder Strong]

Do you have anything else to do? Do Ko and her friends?

[Danielle Fishel]

Of course.

[Ryder Strong]

It's like this pinky in the brain storyline.

[Danielle Fishel]

Like.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Like nothing else going on And Natania.

[Will Friedle]

Clearly wants to be part of the crew.

[Danielle Fishel]

She wants to be part of the babysitter so bad.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Such a cute little storyline for her.

[Danielle Fishel]

The secret is weighing heavy. But Marianne stays strong as her best friend and doesn't betray her trust. Claudia is feeling the effects of Christie ignoring the club too. When they tried studying for that final test, Christy's attention was elsewhere. And all of this has turned into a big battle royale fight between all of the babysitters club.

[Will Friedle]

But wait a second. At the beginning, they said nothing was gonna break them up. It was like part of the movie.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I feel like it does get very combative very quickly. That was something that I was sort of. I was like, we are angry.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah, yeah. There's no room for understanding. It's just immediately jumping to like, what the. Where are you? Why are you not telling yourself?

[Marla Sokoloff]

Who are you, Christine?

[Danielle Fishel]

You're letting us all down.

[Will Friedle]

That was my favorite.

[Danielle Fishel]

One of them said, you owe us.

Like, what do they owe you for? No.

But it doesn't stop Christy from sneaking off from camp again to see her dad. And this time, with her gone, her brother walks off campus and basically right into traffic.

Yeah.

If he was like, car's going to hit him. Car's going to hit him.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Come on.

That you don't want.

[Ryder Strong]

That would make this so much better.

They're in the hospital. All of a sudden, now is. So is her little brother then Bruce Davidson's kid? Or is that also. I'm gonna imagine, Peter Horton's kid? Do we know?

[Marla Sokoloff]

No, no, that's Bruce Davis.

[Ryder Strong]

Peter Horton doesn't care.

[Will Friedle]

Okay, so that's it. So that's her half brother, then her step.

Yeah.

Gotcha. Another writer, strong connection, Brooke Adams played my mom in a TV movie called the Last Hit. So when I saw her on screen, I was like, oh, my God, I know everybody.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah, it's crazy.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I actually just saw her and Melanie and an actress whom I love by the name of Caroline Aaron and also I think Muriel Hemingway in a play. Yeah, the four of them. And I was like. And, you know, Melanie and I are in sort of regular contact, but I was like, brooke, I don't know if you'll remember that we did that. And she was like, of course I remember. She's so lovely. So love. We really lucked out with all of the adults.

[Danielle Fishel]

That's so cool.

All the while, Christie is mindlessly dancing on a bridge with her dad. Not a care in the world. But when she gets home, her mom and stepdad are waiting for her, furious she didn't pick up her half brother. They don't know what's gotten into her. And she yells the cliche, you're not my father as she runs away.

[Marla Sokoloff]

No. This is when I started. This is when it started for me. And, like, I started sobbing and it didn't stop. I know.

[Danielle Fishel]

It is so. It's just so sad.

[Marla Sokoloff]

She's got so much pressure.

[Danielle Fishel]

So much pressure and so many things on her plate. And every adult around her and all of her friends and her friends, everybody.

[Will Friedle]

Everybody, even Rachel turns on her at one point and it's like, wow.

[Danielle Fishel]

To go now. Yeah, I know. Poor Christy. The next day at camp, Christy knows things have gotten rough with her friendships and family. Without even knowing that her friends are still setting up a surprise birthday party for her. Christy starts her apology tour by creating a camp wide lesson plan plan to help Claudia study. It was like we did the Hugo Awards where everybody got award. It was like a fake ceremony that the cast threw for itself. And we got up and all four of us wrapped.

Yeah, you guys threw your own award show.

[Ryder Strong]

It was like a joke award show. Like you give out awards for, like, somebody who always, you know, had a wardrobe malfunction or something, you know, so it was all like in jokes. So.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. I forget why we were.

[Marla Sokoloff]

My huge award. Yeah, I think. I think. Yeah. Mine was messiest or most cluttered or so cute. Diane. Diane did that. Came up with that for us or something. Yeah, you know, but I do remember doing the rap.

[Ryder Strong]

Gary. Gary Beach. I remember him pulling me because he hosted the whole night and he pulled me into his dressing room and was like, what is this? You guys could do a rap? Could you come up with a rap? And then like, we worked it up with him. Yeah, we all came. Oh, I have video of it. I'll find it.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

So funny. We also, I think we also choreographed that rap. I think, I'm sure we had a choreographer present. I'm sure there was an actual paid individual, but I think they, they wanted our input. And so I do remember us working, like working on the choreography to the rap for a minute at that Pasadena hotel.

Well, the next day, while taking the test, Claudia starts tapping her pencil. And she remembers the song. And now she's a genius.

But still, even with this progress, the babysitters club have lost their trust in Christy or even Marianne for keeping a secret, too. And with all the weight on her shoulders. Christy. Christy almost tells her mom, but decides not to. At the last minute at camp, Jackie still hasn't hit a home run. And the girls finally confront Christy. They want to know what's happening, but she still won't tell them the secret.

Can somebody teach this kid how to at least hold the bat prop? I mean, he's hitting his own foot with the bat. It's. It's so bad. It's like, come on, dude. Somebody help this kid swing the bat.

Christy is still oblivious to her upcoming surprise party, but she said she might just be a little late to what she thinks is a meeting. But the good news? Claudia passed her test. Thanks. Rap music. Stacy and Claudia went out in New York together and decided to meet up with Luca. But the girls can't get into a nightclub with their fake IDs. And that's when Luca realizes she's 13. He apparently thought she was older and is now furious.

It's done on a stage and it's. So I was like, what is happening? Like, are we supposed to believe that this is on the road?

Yeah, I was just paying attention because I took a video of that clip for Bri because Bri and I are still really close. And I was like. I was like, oh, this is your shoe. When she's just like, shut up, shut up, shut up.

It was great.

I was dying. I was dying. I was like, there's my little firecracker.

There was also two different scenes where they cut away and they just drop the audio out from underneath Rachel. Like she's in the middle of saying something and they just like, no, cut the scene. So they just drop the audio out. Her mouth is moving and then they just cut.

I noticed a lot of that, too.

[Will Friedle]

That was great.

[Danielle Fishel]

Well, he wants nothing to do with her now. And good for him. The next morning, Stacy and Claudia come back home in a cab and there are just three and a half week weeks left of camp. But it's not coming quick enough for Mrs. Haberman. Kids have ripped apart the neighbor's yard and taken her flowers and so as promised, she's calling the city. But Don is able to calm her down with some replacement flowers and they bond about her interesting life. What do you remember about working with Ellen Burstyn, Larissa?

[Marla Sokoloff]

I mean, I knew it was a really big deal and my mom and I had watched Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Such a good movie. And I, I, you know, I think I learned some sort of like very highbrow acting techniques in the moment of like, like just, you know, use whatever you're feeling to serve the scene. I just like, I wanted her to like me and I wanted her to think I was good and I wanted to get her, I wanted to get her seal of approval. And I'm sure that was my audition scene. And so it had a lot of. It felt very grown up to me honestly, that it's like we are filming this fun movie with all of these kids and all of these friends and we're having a blast. But then I get to do the, this serious two person scene.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. Where you get to drink a cup of tea.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Would drink a cup of tea and talk to a real actor and she could not have been more lovely. And yeah, that's just the feel. That's just what I remember. I just remember feeling very grown up and very accepted. And again, this is one of those. That's when I say it was such a positive environment. Like we were never talked down to. We were very much treated like, like actors in our own rights and we had opinion, you know, we're all incredibly green, but that's. You can. I can see the development, see what we're working with. I can see that we're trying things out and so, so, so, yeah, it was a very surreal experience.

[Ryder Strong]

So very good. It's a good scene.

[Will Friedle]

It's a great scene. I love how it starts too. It starts because you walk over and you're looking at a picture of Ellen Burstyn exactly as she looks now. Because you take them on the set and you're like, is that you in the pictures? Like, well, yeah, it's literally her.

[Danielle Fishel]

It was two days ago.

[Will Friedle]

We just took this.

CVS just mailed me that print.

An over at Stacy's house. Luca is playing harmonica outside, begging for forgiveness. Apparently completely over the age thing now. And all of this is before technically not illegal.

She's not 14 yet.

Also, her mom really wants this relationship to work out, so, you know, 13's what, eighth grade?

Yeah. Grade is 13.

I mean, you're fresh. Yeah. Eighth or eighth or ninth grade. Eighth or ninth grade.

[Will Friedle]

Okay.

I think we're supposed to be eighth graders going into ninth.

[Danielle Fishel]

Ninth grade. Yeah.

Okay. The summer he's in a band and about to graduate high school. Gotcha.

All of this is before Christy's big surprise party. The girls have put together a nice night, and now they're just waiting for the birthday girl. She's supposed to be spending some time with her dad, but he is nowhere to be found. She takes a cab to the pier where they were supposed to celebrate. But while a sad song about wanting to be a daddy's girl plays, Completely missing in action. She aimlessly searches the grounds while the babysitter's club still just waits for her. And an ice cream cake melts. And just in case you thought things couldn't get worse, Koki and her gang toilet paper and spray shaving cream all over the newly renovated greenhouse house the night before the big city inspection. And in the process, the bullies get stuck in wet cement. The carnival is closing. A thunderstorm is brewing. There is no sign of her dad still. So Christy hides in a scary carousel and calls the babysitter's club, crying. But the payphone cuts out, so Marianne spills the beans. She reveals Christy's real dad came back. The club is stunned, but they still can't tell anyone. They just need to find her. Christy is trying to walk home from the carnival now in the pouring rain, a cart filled with babysitters club, driven by the 17 year old Luca finally finds her. And they hug their friend in the middle of the road. After getting Christy dry and safe, Luca tells Jesse that he'll be coming back next summer. And that means she'll be 14 and he'll be 18.

The way they said that too was like, well, that answers all the problems.

[Danielle Fishel]

What one huge hole.

[Danielle Fishel]

It really is like.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I'm like, wow, we. I don't think we can dig ourselves out of that one.

[Will Friedle]

I mean, that was. Yeah, that was. That was audibly me going, wait, what's happening? What the hell is happening? Yeah, I know. Ow.

[Danielle Fishel]

They could have just made him 16, which still, there's a little bit of an age difference, but if he had been 16, he could still have a car. He could still be driving, and she could be 14 next year, and he'll be 17 next year. And then we're still not quite at. We're still teenagers. It's still not great. But the fact that they went out of their way to make him 17 were. It's all just like, could have been saved a little bit, I think, with just one year difference.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah.

[Will Friedle]

You are completely different human beings, though. At 13 and 17, you just two. It's. You might as well be 20 and 80. I mean, you're just two different people.

[Danielle Fishel]

I know, but you know when you're like, I remember. Remember being in high school and you're all in high school together. You know, you're in high school with 17 year olds. Some 17 year olds are juniors, some 17 year olds are high or seniors. I was a freshman at 14. Like, you're all. You hang out at lunch, you go. You see each other at parties. Like, you. You do date.

[Ryder Strong]

I know. I mean, like, even, like, I mean, just the difference between Larissa, who to me looked like teenage Larissa, and Rachel, who looked like a child to me. Like, I was like, you know, like two years later, I was dating her, and I was like, that was a different person. Like, watching this was creepy. It was like, oh, that is a little girl. Like, she's. Whereas Larissa's right next the same age.

[Marla Sokoloff]

But because Rachel's 2 years old. Like, she was.

[Ryder Strong]

Yeah, she's.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I was 13. She felt like a teenager to me.

[Ryder Strong]

Oh, my God.

[Danielle Fishel]

She felt like a big kid.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah. I, like, so looked up to her. I thought she was the coolest. Coolest, coolest. Coming in with her thrift store clothes. I know.

[Ryder Strong]

And then they dress her like. Like such a yuppie in this part.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Drinking her coffee. Yeah, no, I know. That's so funny.

[Ryder Strong]

So not her. Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Because to me. Yeah, to me, she was. To me, she was. She was like a big kid.

[Ryder Strong]

Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah. So. Yeah. And I felt like I. I still felt like 10.

[Danielle Fishel]

Right.

[Ryder Strong]

Right.

[Danielle Fishel]

You were like, I can't wait till I'm. I'm grown up. Yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I didn't know I was so tall.

[Danielle Fishel]

I know.

[Will Friedle]

You were. There was.

[Danielle Fishel]

There was one.

At one point, you were all in a line and. And you must have had six inches on everybody else that was there.

[Danielle Fishel]

So they mentioned that she'll be 14. And he says he knows. They completely ignore the fact that that means he'll be 18 and really breaking the law. And then they kiss the girls, console Christy as she sobs about her dad. She really believed him this time. Everyone forgives each other and they are still able to celebrate her birthday. Best friends forever. The next day, Christy finally tells her mom, who isn't happy she kept it a secret, but correctly blames her dad. But she also admits her dad really does love her. She reveals a letter that he left in the mailbox. It says the job didn't work out, and he apologizes for everything. He's going to Colorado for a possible job and will keep in contact. Her mom defends the letter by saying her dad is full of dreams, just like her daughter is, and she should never give them. Up. Up. It's a little. I'm a little confused about the message there.

[Will Friedle]

Thought she was gonna say he's full of bourbon, which is why he didn't show up.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. Also, I. I just. So he was. When he made the plans to pick her up on her birthday, did he know then he was gonna let her down? Like, when did he make the decision that leaving her stranded again on her birthday and just leaving her a note instead was the good choice here?

[Will Friedle]

Probably when he was shooting 30 something, maybe.

[Marla Sokoloff]

No, but that's. I think that that's the thing, like, that he's. You know, it's that. It's that misguided attempt at, like, oh, I'll hurt her less if I do it this way. And it's like, you know how you don't hurt your daughter? You tell her the truth.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. You don't set her up for failure.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Promises that you can't keep. That's how you do.

[Will Friedle]

Yeah. They try to do his character work where it's like he wanted to be there. You know, he was trying this time, but it was like this. I don't buy this, but I don't begrudge.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I don't begrudge Brooke. I don't begrudge Brooke Adams character for not, like, speaking ill of him.

[Danielle Fishel]

You know, I love that she doesn't speak ill.

[Will Friedle]

It really makes sense.

[Marla Sokoloff]

She's really trying to bite her tongue on that one.

[Will Friedle]

Absolutely.

[Danielle Fishel]

And I do think it's so important, like, for. Even if. Even if you don't feel it or believe it, to tell your kid how much the other parent loves them. Because if a child feels unloved by a parent, it's not because they blame the parent. It's because they think they are unlovable. And so when she said, what if.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I had done something different? And what if I were different? Oh, my God.

[Danielle Fishel]

I know.

[Will Friedle]

Yeah. The scene you don't see is then her at night with the parents at night, Bruce Davidson together. And her like, can you believe he did this again? Mother, dad.

[Marla Sokoloff]

The bottle of bourbon comes out.

[Will Friedle]

Exactly. That's when that would have happened. But in front of your kid, you're like, no, it's just. He's following his dreams.

[Larissa Oleynik]

Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

So when the girls get to the greenhouse ready for the inspection, they see all the damage from Koki and her crew and their shoes in the dry cement. So with two hours left before the city officials arrive, the whole club and the kids from the camp clean the area. They work tirelessly right up until the committee arrives, which apparently includes the neighbor, Mrs. Abrams Herman. And although it looks beautiful, the group can't give them the permit since they charge for their babysitting services. They are more than just a club. They are a business, which makes the permit impossible. Instead, the officials want to use the greenhouse for government activities and give the babysitters club a plaque. And that's when Mrs. Haberman jumps in. She thinks this is ludicrous. The girls barely even profited $200. How can they be a real business? She goes on to explain, if any business doesn't make $1,500 per year, then they aren't actually a business business. And so the permit is allowed, thanks to the once cranky neighbor. The president agrees, but also just barely cares.

[Will Friedle]

Why is it so hot all of a sudden?

[Ryder Strong]

It's a greenhouse.

[Danielle Fishel]

A greenhouse.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Greenhouse, yeah.

[Will Friedle]

Oh, gotcha. That might. Okay. Wondering why I was, like, sitting there, I was like, why is everyone.

[Ryder Strong]

When they first walked in the first scene, walking into this, they. Someone has the line, this gatehouse used to be. And both. All three, me, Indy, and Alex, were like, did she just say gay house? Was this a gay house? We went back and we're like, oh, gate house. But all three of us heard it. We were like, this used to be a gay house. Now it's a greenhouse.

[Danielle Fishel]

Is a. Is gatehouse another word for a greenhouse?

[Ryder Strong]

I don't know.

[Will Friedle]

No, I think a gatehouse, probably back in the time, was probably the little house that your guard would be in at your gate to drive up. It's called a gatehouse. So this is probably on a big piece of property, and it used to be. It was far. A gatehouse, I would think.

[Danielle Fishel]

Okay. All right. So it was an amazing day. They got the greenhouse as an office, and Jackie hit his first home run with the ball, landing on Cokie in a tree, knocking her into a dumpster. No one ever heard from her again, so she might be dead. Even the nerdy kid and dawn end up together. And Christy gets another letter from her dad. He's actually sending one every week. And with summer ending and liking Claudia's room as the actual clubhouse, they decide to donate the greenhouse to Mrs. Haybrook. So in the end, Claudia wasn't the only one with a test this summer. They were each tested in their own ways and learned what it means to come through for each other. They take one last group photo, and the babysitters club will live forever. There it is. So what do you guys think? Final thoughts on the movie?

[Marla Sokoloff]

I think it all come. I think it all wraps up very nicely.

[Danielle Fishel]

Me too. You know what? I. It made me really feel like I super missed out because I didn't see this movie when I was a teen. It makes me really. It made me feel the same way. I'm talking about, you guys need to do a big reunion. It makes me wonder, like, I guess Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is another movie that feels like this, but it really made me go. Movies about groups of girlfriends. Why are there not more of them? Like, I think about some of my favorite movies like Steel Magnolias. Like, movies about women and. And their relationships now and then. Great. One Babysitter's Club. Like, I want to watch them all and I want to see more of them. They're. They're so compelling.

[Marla Sokoloff]

I think it's also, I think what I was struck by this time, and I remember I was struck by a couple years ago when I rewatched. It was like the level of. Aside from the bad girl storyline, which, you know, now does feel a little dated, even though they're also great, funny, and Marlo is so committed. But, you know, it's like the genuine level of. Even though I was talking about it, it's like, you know, a little bit too intense. Our aggression towards Chrissy. But Christy. But the affection that we have for each other, the physical affection that we have, I don't feel like that's shown so much. Like, I even. I even sent a screen. I sent a screenshot to Rachel of, like, we're like. We're like interlacing hands, you know, like just that depiction of, like, how important and how deep those friendships are. How, like, when the rest of the world gets you down.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah, yeah.

[Marla Sokoloff]

When the rest of the world gets you down. Like, you have, I mean, genuine, genuine family with the women around you, especially as a young girl like that. That I think is. It's important. It's important.

[Danielle Fishel]

And I Think we forget that as teenagers when somebody. Somebody has something weird going on, your first thought is not, maybe there's something wrong with them that I should dig deeper and I should have more empathy for. For them. Your thought is, why are they doing this to me? What is it about me that's making this happen? Me, me, me, me, me. And your first thought is, well, then fine, if you're not going to tell me what's going on, then I guess we're just not friends anymore. Like it. Those things are very real. I mean, my best friend, Jennifer Kaminsky, started dating a boy. I had a. I had dated before, and I was furious. And we wrote each other nasty notes and dropped them in each other's locker.

[Marla Sokoloff]

And I'm sure it felt like a real breakup.

[Danielle Fishel]

It did. It was way more traumatizing to me than anything that happened with Michael Goldman.

[Will Friedle]

Did you become friends with her again or no.

[Danielle Fishel]

Oh, yeah. Jen's still my best friend. We. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We of course overcame it. But that's my point is that your relationship, your relationships with each other, there are. There are highs and there are lows. And sometimes in teenage friendships especially, you do things you are not proud of and you make the worst of assumptions. But. But it's all very real. Like all of that, it felt very real to me.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Yeah. And the part of the reason why we're so upset is that we're just feeling like left out of something. Someone knows something that someone else does, you know? I'm curious, Ryder, what was Indy's takeaway?

[Ryder Strong]

You know, he's gotten. I think he's gotten a little more sophisticated. He likes horror films now, you know, like, so he wants to watch grown Ups. So I think he felt like it was a kids movie and he, you.

[Marla Sokoloff]

Know, you guys were even forcing him.

[Ryder Strong]

Yeah. Yeah. But no, it's such a cozy film, you know, like, that's the feeling I got. It was like, oh, this is. This is a movie where like, even the bad things aren't really that bad, you know? And it's like, it's just a. It's a nice. It's a nice world, you know, it's just like a cozy, you know, relaxing world. And I just. I love the way it looks too. Like, I love seeing a movie from the 90s that had that, like, you.

[Danielle Fishel]

Know, that film machine.

[Ryder Strong]

It just looks good and it looks inviting and warm and I just want to like. Yeah, I. I figured it was Pasadena. I was like, if they didn't shoot this, this had. If this was in la. This is Pasadena, but it's just beautiful. But yeah, what a tough job though, man. Being a summer camper for a bunch of kids. That seems like a nightmare.

[Danielle Fishel]
