These objectives can conflict. A larger viewing window may improve visibility but reduce structural support. A slimmer body may look elegant but constrain battery capacity or internal clearances. A continuous metal enclosure may feel premium while complicating antenna, charging, assembly or inspection needs.

Industrial design is the process of resolving those tradeoffs into one coherent object. The result should not look like a set of compromises. It should make the necessary decisions feel inevitable.

Designing Around the Internal Architecture

Every concept begins with a spatial envelope. The reservoir establishes capacity and influences height or width. The battery occupies a significant volume and introduces electrical and thermal requirements. The heating system and liquid inlets need a stable relationship with the bottom of the reservoir. Airflow must travel through a controlled route, while seals and structural parts require space of their own.

Mouthpiece design deserves equal attention. Width, taper, curvature and material affect both comfort and the visual identity of the object. Activation changes the interaction model. A button needs a discoverable location, suitable travel and protection against accidental operation. Appearance models and functional prototypes answer different questions. A non-working model can test proportion and grip, while a working sample reveals how the form interacts with airflow, heat and assembly. Both should be reviewed before tooling.

CMF: Color, Material and Finish

CMF—color, material and finish—determines how the object looks, feels, wears and fits within a brand portfolio. On compact hardware, a small change in gloss, texture or seam quality can strongly influence perceived value.

Materials

Metal enclosures can offer rigidity, precise edges and a cool initial touch. Engineered polymers allow complex molded features, lighter weight and transparent areas. Elastomers or soft-touch coatings can add grip, while PCTG and related copolyesters are often used where reservoir visibility and molded geometry are important.

No material is automatically premium. A carefully detailed polymer part may feel more resolved than a metal shell with inconsistent gaps or a fragile coating.

Color

Color needs to work across different substrates and processes. The same digital value can appear different on anodized aluminum, painted metal, molded polymer and printed packaging. Designers should approve physical samples under multiple lighting conditions rather than relying on a monitor.

Adult-use products also require restraint. Color can create recognition without resembling toys, candy packaging or youth-oriented accessories. A controlled core palette with limited seasonal variations is often more durable than an unlimited collection of novelty finishes.

Finish

Gloss changes perceived form because it controls how light moves across the surface. Matte finishes can reduce visible fingerprints and create a quieter appearance, while polished accents can emphasize a transition or control. Texture can improve grip but may also trap dirt or complicate graphic application.

Durability must be part of the CMF brief. Coatings should be assessed for abrasion, oils from handling, packaging contact and normal cleaning. The most attractive sample on day one is not necessarily the best finish after repeated use.

Making Oil Visibility Part of the Design

A viewing window is both a functional interface and a visual feature. It helps communicate remaining material, identifies the reservoir and reinforces orientation without requiring a screen.

Designers can reveal the entire tank, create a narrow vertical window or use a geometric opening. Each option affects structure, molding and assembly. The window must remain legible in common hand positions, not just in a front-facing render.

The relationship between the oil color, transparent material and surrounding finish also matters in photography and retail presentation. A window can become a signature brand element when its geometry is repeated across related models. It should still be designed for inspection, cleaning and tolerance control rather than treated as a purely graphic cutout.

Design for Manufacturing Without Losing the Concept

Design for manufacturing, or DFM, translates visual intent into repeatable parts and processes. It begins before the final render, when the concept is still flexible enough to change.

Key questions include:

Where will molded parting lines and gates appear?
Which surfaces are cosmetic, and how will they be protected during assembly?
Are wall thicknesses, draft angles and radii suitable for the selected process?
Can parts locate themselves without excessive operator adjustment?

A seam cannot simply be hidden in a rendering. It must be placed where it supports assembly and looks intentional. Likewise, an extremely sharp edge may be visually appealing but incompatible with tooling, coating thickness or comfortable handling.

DFM does not mean allowing manufacturing to erase the design. It means identifying the non-negotiable qualities—perhaps a silhouette, window, tactile transition or mouthpiece profile—and simplifying other elements so those qualities survive production.

Building a Scalable Product Design Language
