I've confronted hundreds of men over two decades, men online looking for children to sexually assault. Cody, I'm Chris Hansen. I know who you are. I tried to get into their heads and understand why, but you have it on your phone. That's true. And ultimately make sure they face justice. Can I just give you some money and leave? I don't want money. I want the truth. These are the predators I've caught. I'm Chris Hansen. It is always intensely disappointing to me when we find out that one of the predators I've caught served in the US Military. We want to honor our veterans. We want to thank them for their service to our country. And I guess it doesn't surprise me that anyone from any walk of life could walk into one of our stings. But it always hurts me a little bit. And such is the case with 37 year old Jonathan Mitchell, who in July of 2025 surfaced during our sting in Marion County, Florida. You may recall that we arrested some 40 men in six days. And while that was astounding, you're going to see very shortly that we arrested even more in the most recent sting in Marion County, Florida. But Jonathan Mitchell was chatting online with somebody who told him she was a 13 year old girl about to be 14. There was talk of sloppy toppy,

of doing something else if it doesn't fit. He was referring to his man size. And he drove from his home in Brantford, Florida about 30, 40 minutes to the Ocala area where we were operating the sting to meet this child. And I'll get into details of the chat here in just a minute, but you know, they're graphic. And he gave me all the excuses of he was just going to Subway to get a sandwich and that happened to be right next to the location where he was supposed to meet the girl. It's all in the chat where he was retired from the US Navy at the time. He was a specialist in close in weapons, spent about five years with the Navy. He told me he was retired. He had a little side business moving stuff with his truck. He wasn't married at the time, or at least that's what he said. And he didn't seem to have children, at least that's what he said. And he took this all very casually, like it was just a bump in the road. Oh, I was just getting a sandwich. I didn't do anything. I didn't actually meet with a girl. But I think his intentions are pretty clear when you take a look at the chat, which is exactly what we're going to do now. Now, this comes directly from the investigative report from the Marion County Sheriff's Office. The defendant, being Mitchell, asks several times what her donation rate is. Now, this is code word dog whistle for how much are you going to pay somebody for sex rate for an hour? The defendant quickly begins asking to meet up with the girl in person. Mentions on two separate occasions that she is underage and is in fact 14 years old. The decoy posing as the child then says, are you OK with me being younger, though? I'm down to meat. I just have to be careful. This is the decoy posing as the 13, 14 year old. Your ad said 19, says Mitchell. So yeah, definitely okay with that. When do you want to meet? Now he's playing this game that we see played all the time. Children get on these platforms and they have to say they're 18, 19 to get on. But then there's no identification required, no proof of age required. So anybody can get on these apps and children do that, and that's part of the sting here in this case. I'm not. That's the youngest you can put. As long as you're the age of consent, then I don't see a problem. You're 18, right? It puts a little smiley face emoji there. Or we can meet up when you're ready. He says, I mean, once I can trust you. I'm about to be 14. She says, I gotta play it safe, like I said. Then Mitchell sends a photograph of himself with his dog. The decoy mentions that she likes to play video games and says that she is lonely. The defendant tells her that she does not have to be lonely and that if they could play video games together in person, but they would be too distracted to play any game, meaning they'd want to have sex with each other. The conversation continues. The decoy says, what are my options really? Whatever you want or can take. Whatever you can take. Now that's an inference that he knows he's talking to a child. A gentleman would be straight up, though. I like to consent to my activities. I'm cool with whatever. No pressure to do anything. He says, I'm a Certified gentleman. Yeah, certified gentleman.

All right.

By the way, may I know my options then, gentlemen? She says options for what? Says Mitchell. And what option you want to consent to? Okay, bye now. A 13, 14 year old wouldn't want to get into this kind of conversation. So the decoy posing as the child ditches. But Mitchell's not ready to let this go. He sees an opportunity. I'm just not sure what you're referring to. Not going to talk explicitly over text. You can call if you want to hear it. So he's being careful. He doesn't want to leave a trail of evidence. Him setting up a sexual liaison with a child. And if there is any doubt, Mitchell makes it clear. Pretty sure you know what I want. Looking for some sloppy toppy and go from there. If it doesn't fit, then maybe good tug would be cool. So what he's actually asking for is oral sex. But because of the child's age, he's concerned that maybe his penis would be too big for her to handle and that, you know, a hand job would be okay. That's what he's getting at. As long as you promise I won't get pregnant. I promise. My pull out game is top notch.

Does that work? She asks. Not trying to be a mom at 14. Lol. Lol. Don't blame me. It depends on the person, I guess. But we can play it safer if you're worried. So you know, there's been talk of oral sex, talk of other sexual acts, but he's leaving the door open for intercourse as well. Now remember, this girl has told him she's 13, about to be 14. The defendant then makes plans to meet at the Dunkin Donuts right there at Ocala. He texts that he's out his way. And at about 4:00 clock in the afternoon, we are out there as well. One of my crews as well as deputies and detectives from the Marion County Sheriff's office. And we see his blue Tacoma pull in. My camera guy catches it from there. One of my cameramen heads out with the arrest team to pick up 37 year old Jonathan of Brantford, Florida at a local fast food joint. Roll the window down.

Mitchell is taken into custody without incident. They search his blue pickup truck and find a weapon, a loaded firearm, pistol. Now that's not illegal necessarily in Florida to carry a concealed weapon, but it does raise some concerns based upon what he was doing that day. And you have to ask the natural question. What if he did meet a 14 year old girl, she jumped in his truck and his sloppy topic didn't go the way he wanted? There's a firearm in the vehicle. Jonathan is loaded into the transport vehicle and I'm waiting for him at the sheriff's office. Jonathan Mitchell also had seven condoms in a pouch they found just in case the child didn't want to trust his quote unquote pull out game being so strong. Jonathan is taken to the Marion County Sheriff's Office and he is brought in for interrogation. He requests a lawyer, which cuts the interview with detectives short. But that doesn't mean I can't talk to him. Something I make very clear when I walk in. He tries to play it off like this is just some sort of inconvenience. Hey, Jonathan, how you doing? Good. Had a rough afternoon, huh? Show me what happened.

I don't know. How's that? Subway. And then I was leaving and then I got pulled over by cops.

I don't know. He says, I was at Subway, then I was leaving, then I got pulled over by the cops. Now he leaves out, conveniently the reason for him being there and how it matches up with being right next door to the Dunkin Donuts where he was supposed to beat a child for sex. According to the transcripts, we were at Subway.

Yeah, you know, I went in, they came out and then was leaving.

I was going to meet someone and then canceled. There's no record of any cancellation in the chats he had with somebody who told him they were 13, about to turn 14. There's talk of sloppy toppies, talk of a pullout game. No talk of cancel. And where do you live?

There he goes asking for a lawyer. Now he has a right to a lawyer and a right to not answer questions from law enforcement until he gets that lawyer present. But I'm a journalist and I can ask him whatever I want to ask. Now if he says, get out of here, you're harassing me, it's time to go. I go. But more often than not, these guys will talk to me at some level, even after they've requested a lawyer before they talk to the detectives. And that's fair game.

No, I'm just trying to get the truth. Do you know how many guys I've interviewed in your situation? A lot. And you know how many go to prison or get convicted? 99.1%. Which indicates to me that a lot of them are lying to me or jerking me around.

[Jonathan Mitchell]

I was leaving. I was leaving. I was leaving when you guys pulled me on back.

[Chris Hansen]

Okay, I didn't pull you over. The sheriff's office.

[Jonathan Mitchell]

Yeah, I was leaving. I was going home. So I didn't do. And I didn't.

[Chris Hansen]

You did. When you got into the conversation with somebody who told you they were a child. Okay, so you can try to jack me around all you want.

[Jonathan Mitchell]

I'm just saying that's the truth. I was leaving. I was going home.

[Chris Hansen]

Yeah, but all that happened after you had the conversation. No, after you had the conversation. Why did you go? Why? What was your purpose of going to the subway? You weren't going to meet anybody there. Nobody at the subway. Jonathan thinks he can go toe to toe with me and he gave it a good shot. The difference is at the end of our conversation, I'm going back into the room where we hang out with our crew and then walk over to the big room where all the chatters are working on the next cases. Jonathan is going to an area that's not so comfortable. He's going to the lockup area. He's going to get a chance to make a phone call and later a potential chance to bond out pending his case. And oh yeah, he'll be able to call that lawyer he's been talking about.

[Jonathan Mitchell]

Just really had to go take a pee. I was going to get something to eat and then I thought against it and moved about and that's when you pulled me over. You got Sheriff, I saw your cameras there.

[Chris Hansen]

Yeah.

[Jonathan Mitchell]

So you were there in spirit. Either way, I was going home. I don't care.

[Chris Hansen]

But a couple more questions before that. What do you think should happen here?

[Jonathan Mitchell]

I don't know. I'm going home and I was just going to live a peaceful night. Like, I wasn't trying to do anything. Like I was literally going.

[Chris Hansen]

What were you doing on that site earlier, though? What was the purpose of being on that site?

[Jonathan Mitchell]

You know where that site is?

[Chris Hansen]

It's a site where people go to meet others for sex. And in this case, there was a 13 year old girl on the site or somebody who told you she was 13 and you engaged in a sexually

[Jonathan Mitchell]

charged conversation so that there was nothing sexual about it. You can spin it however you want.

[Chris Hansen]

I don't have to spin it. I don't have to spin it. And then I don't have arrest powers. I'm just trying to figure out what the hell was going on in your mind to put you in this situation. You can either help me to understand that or not. So I guess it remains a mystery to me.

[Jonathan Mitchell]

It will. Okay.

[Chris Hansen]

All right, Jonathan, anything else you want to say? All right, well, I'm sure they'll figure that out for you. Do you have a lawyer?

[Jonathan Mitchell]

No. I don't know how that works.

You ever been arrested before? Just for a dy, dui, nothing else. Do you ever meet anybody online for sex before?

What? Don't ask me questions. What? What you mean have you? Oh, you're not gonna get an answer?

You're not gonna answer that? Do you have a predisposition or an attraction to underage girls?

No. No. It was even my life. Regardless, I was leaving. Got me for leaving. Where was I going? Home.

Pretty cordial for a guy who's facing such serious charges. I don't know if he ever really did look me up, but if he did, he'll know exactly what I do for a living. I did look him up, though, to see what's happened since his arrest. And it turns out that recently Jonathan Mitchell pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years in Florida State Prison. That's right. After all that, all the denials, everything else, he took responsibility for the crimes. And he will be in Florida prison until May of 2028. Now, as you remember hearing, Jonathan Mitchell said he had been in very little trouble during his life, just a dui.
