Hey, hey Startup Nation. Welco. Back to another episode of the Private Practice Startup podcast. We hope you guys are doing well during these times and I know podcasts are evergreen, so you could be listening to this two years in the future. Today's actually April 3, 2020. We're in the middle of the COVID crisis and Kate and I have been bobbing and weaving trying to bring topics that are most relevant to you. And the funny thing is I will usually tell you, hey, we hope you checked out last week because this was the last week's podcast guest, but because things are changing so much, we are changing the order of our podcast to deliver you guys the most relevant content. A few of the guests we've had on recently are Camila Gamba, all the way from Milan, Italy who did an update with us because Italy has been about three weeks ahead of us. So she's been on our podcast now twice updating us just kind of on the current trends and what's happening and really inspiring hope. So that was one of our podcasts. We have Hal Elrod. We have a number of podcasts especially also one on self care. So I'm not really sure what order they're in anymore because we keep changing things. But that's okay. You know, I'm really excited about today's guest. Today's guest is not only a personal friend of mine, but was also my business coach for a full year as I was developing my private practice as well as the private practice startup. He continues to be a friend and a coach. I know that he has settled me in some anxious times as we've gone through this crisis and really grounded me and helped me see the possibility in the future. And that is the one only Michael Dill of Action Coach. What's up, Michael?
C
Good morning, Katie.
B
Hey, hey, hey. So just a little, we're going to be talking about how to migrate in turbulent time. So a little bit about Michael. He's a certified award winning business coach. He's been 15 years in the restaurant industry, 24 years in the financial industry, eight years as a professional coach, and has won the Action Coach Excellent award as well as Young Entrepreneur of the year client award 2016. And today we're going to be talking about attitude, action and results. But before we dive in, you know, the interesting thing about what's going on is I know I spoke about this before on the podcast, is that anytime there's a crisis, there's also an opportunity, right? That's the other side of crisis. And for some of you, I know that this is really difficult time for you and you have been in fear and worry and concern and I get that. And most importantly is to manage your own emotions, take care of yourself and do what you need to get out of that and get grounded again. And for those of you who are seeing this as an opportunity, you might coming into business anew for the first time. And what an interesting time to come into business. And for those of you who are already in business, this is a great time to really work on your business. So for those of you who are brand new, we want to give you a gift. That gift is our A to Z cheat sheet. The essentials for building and growing your dream practice. Head over to Private PracticeStartup.com, go to the resources tab and download that. That comes with five days of free practice building emails to really support you in transitioning and creating the private practice that you most desire and most Dre just going to kind of dive in with Michael. We're going to talk about this. And Michael obviously brings a lot of experience to the world of business. He's been in different industries also is very aware of the industries that are currently affected with all of our hospitality people, you know, I think about like the massage therapist and people who do like touch as a job and they're like in the public that have had to close down. Step one, obviously this is a big financial crisis in the time of not only US history, but the world history. So Michael, where should we start?
C
Oh my God, where should we start first? What has served me and I don't know, there's lots of different ages. I was just on our planning with four individuals and one of the individuals was a 22 year old real estate agent and he had that deer in the head, like looks in his eye because he. This is the first time he's going through something like this before. What I've done is I'm tapping into my experience. In 1990 I bought my home. If you remember 1990, we were in a recession and there was the Iraq, Kuwaiti war. I unfortunately bought my home and a week later I lost my job. And it Was a very trying time for me. And I remember negotiating for a new job, reading the book Psychology Winning by Dennis Whateley. Day in and day out to keep my mind right. And in 2000, you see behind me the dot com bubble in the stock market. As an advisor, I didn't handle that very well. I wasn't as prepped as I am now. And when you mix 9, 11 in the mix and stocks going down every day, I was a little jaded and a little beat up, and I wasn't having fun. And finally I realized what saved me was there's certain things that I cannot control. There's certain things I can control. I can control everything in the four walls of my business. I can control my mindset, my attitude, how I show up every morning. I control my actions, getting on the phone, speaking to my clients, speaking to somebody else's clients. And when I just controlled my mindset, my attitude, and my actions and steps, results came. So that really was a huge shift for me then. I was blessed in 2008, believe it or not, as a consultant to advisors. People here, blessed. They think I'm crazy, but there was a lot of adversity, just like we have it now. But I had the ability to tap into what I learned in 2000, and I was looking at it from the opportunity side of the equation of how to add value to my clients and listeners out there, to give them that source of light or vision that they can grasp onto something and look forward to, versus looking backwards. And all those experience I'm tapping into now because I felt I've been here before, and a lot of us have been here before, but we say it's different. It's really not. It's just the same. It's tapping to our strengths, delivering our goods and services to our clients in a professional manner, and being ready for the other side when it breaks.
B
Yeah, let's just take a really quick break for our sponsor.

B
Michael, tell us some of the things that you've actually learned going through now. This is the third, I guess, recession that you're going through. As you know a person, someone who had real estate, property in business, a business owner, what have you learned? What hope can you instill in us that might be going through this for the first time?
C
Well, you got to do it first thing. Attitude. You gotta keep your head right because if you're listening to the noise, if you're listening to people making predictions or you're listening, say this is going to happen, we're going to be out of work when blah blah blah blah blah, you really got to get clear on how you can show up every day. Because I've learned something a long time ago, Katie. We're not necessarily here for us, we're here to serve. So whatever profession we're in, when we put our energy into what I'm not getting what has been taken away from me, why this is difficult for me. I guarantee you will be stuck and you will go down. However, if you get into the mode of I am here to be a beacon of light to add value to others, to help others, to give them strategy, solutions, systems, ways of thinking, ways to shift, then you're not stuck because you're out there helping people. And when those people say thank you so much for being the person you're being getting me through this, that gives you the light to keep on going. And I think that's really the first thing is the attitude. We need to control that before anything else.
B
So what's one thing that you do consistently to really make sure that you have the right attitude and mindset.
C
Oh, my God. I do meditation every morning. I do my affirmations every morning. I practice the principles I teach and think, grow rich every morning. I make sure I'm exercising. I don't watch the news. I watch CNBC for an hour a day. I read Investors Business Daily so I can see the technicals of the market. And I talk to smart people that are much brighter than I. I tap into the community. I'm fortunate, Katie. I'm in a community of coaches all around the world. We're 26 years old. We're the number one coaching organization in the world. Brad Sugars is brilliant. So I tap into that community and brainstorm and mastermind of what everyone else is doing to stay on their A game and help others. And when you tap in that community, you're just surrounding yourself with wisdom and that same wisdom begins to translate to you helping others.
B
Nice. Nice. So let's talk about attitude and moving on to action. So what can we do in the four walls of our business during this time? And obviously our audience is therapists. So what recommendations do you have regards to that?
C
Well, therapists especially, and I consider myself somewhat of a therapist sometimes, because in business you're coaching people and people are people. The first thing is we need to really work on ourselves first because you can really get caught up with helping everyone else and it can take a little wind out of you. So you really got to make sure you're on your A game and get yourself thinking in the right direction and get them thinking. Thinking in the right direction. And you said something great at the beginning of this podcast, Katie. You said opportunity and crisis. And in Chinese, there's two brushstrokes for the word crisis. One is opportunity and one is danger. Now, yes, there's short term danger, but if you're focusing on that, you're not going to be able to shift. But if you're focusing on the opportunity on the side, the only thing you can really do is keep in touch with your clients, communicate properly, make sure you're in the right communities, and make sure you're clear on your vision of where you want to go with your particular organization. Because especially now more than ever, if you're not clear on the purpose and the vision and the mission of your organization of where you're going. I mean, it's dicey out there, so you're going to get stuck. But that vision could be that magnet that pulls you forward, that keeps you going, that keeps you enthused to keep on going. Towards that light. Because in times like this, great opportunities and innovations have come out of situations like this. We'll read about these companies and these innovators a year, two years down the road that they were starting right here, right now to serve a purpose. You're like, oh my God. So it's possible if you keep your head in the right place and your eye on the prize.
B
You know, as you say that I have chills because I so strongly feel that and believe that. Because when we even look at a diamond, like a diamond has to be compressed, you know, over time, right? And usually the place of some of our greatest growth is the compression. And we're being, as a world, we're being compressed right now. And yeah, we can either choose to sink or swim, you know what I mean? And it's just so important of what side we're going to choose. And you know, I get that the fears and the worries come up and we got to handle that and then we have to shift. And one of the things you're also talking about with mindset, you know, when I got into business, you know, I thought very like logically and I find that business can be very counterintuitive in the sense of, I remember when I first got into business I was doing full time dance between part time practice, I was up till 1am, would get up at 6am and work, work, work.
C
Work, work, work, work.
B
And I find that stepping back and like you're talking about like doing the self care or even right now for me before we hopped on and hit record, like I've been having excruciating history of chronic pain, but excruciating pain like in my neck from being on all of the online of, you know, running around right now trying to serve therapists the best that we can and doing this podcast and level up and like you had mentioned is the counter, the logical thing is like, no, we got to keep going. But what we really need to do and what Katie and I started doing is taking a step back, like take a breath, okay. We got caught up in, you know, the chaos with everyone else. And that's okay because like you said, we're like here to serve, but we have to look at, you know, what is the vision, what is the goal, how are we going to pivot and most importantly, how are we going to take care of ourselves in that process so we can continue to take care and serve our audience the best way we can and really be a role model for that. So I'm saying this to you Therapists, because I know, I feel like we're one of the bunch where sometimes we can, you know, talk a good game and give really good advice, and then sometimes we're not caring for ourselves. So, you know, if you're in a place where you need to just kind them check out for a day or two or take a weekend or three days, that's okay. Because I know you guys are doing telehealth. I know that it can be very taxing to the body. So you got to care for yourself first. And this is the time where you really get creative. I know for me, I did a recording with Hal Elrod, the author of the Miracle Morning, and you know, he talks about the five minute rule, right? So when something has happened to you, you set your timer for five minutes and you can bitch and complain and, you know, woe is me. And once that timer goes off is you say, I can't change it, and then you shift. And so I know a few days ago when I woke up with really excruciating pain, I was kind of in that place. And, you know, and then I said, you know what? I can't change it. And then I began to look at my schedule, you know, I began to put more stuff on the team. You know, I said, I can't be on the computer today, guys. And then I looked at my client schedule and I started spacing people out more. And I've committed like two maximum three videos, you know, per day. That's it. That's all I can do right now. But I can do other stuff. So this place of compression and having, you know, whatever pain we're in, whether it's, you know, an emotional pain, a chronic pain or something else, is, you know, allow yourself to be creative, really serve yourself so you can serve others. So I just wanted to kind of mention that and just kind of share a little bit about what I'm noticing for myself, if that's helpful to any of you.
C
You know what's interesting, Katie, is I think the biggest value we need to get from this time right now, when we're going through adversity, when we're going through it, it's not enjoyable. However, when I look back at 1990 and 2000 and 2008, those were my biggest growth spurts. I tell all my clients, I told everyone from the very beginning, in adversity, this is where you're going to find out a lot about yourself. You're going to find out a lot about people around you. There's two ways of Doing this, you can either rise and shine or you can crack and break. So this is. Instead of fearing what's going on, embrace it, because this is where we, as leaders get to grow the most. I promise everyone on this podcast, four or five years down the road, you will look back at this time, say, oh, my God, I grew more, more then than I have in my whole life. So embrace this, because this is what's going to serve you, to make you stronger, to be a better leader, to be a better business owner, a better entrepreneur, a better person. And that's the really valuable lesson. And as we try to avoid the pain and avoid fear, embrace it, dive right into it, because you're going to learn so much about yourself. Awesome.
B
So share a little bit more about what actions should we be taking in our business at this time.
C
Well, first of all, there's ways to get money. The first thing is, if you can get money, get money. Make sure you go on the different sites. I know facebook.com Facebook is awarding $100 million in grants, so it's grants. So look at that. There's SBA.gov, there's all different ways the system is putting money in there, it's putting money out there. So if you need money, take advantage of the money to grow. Make sure you're keeping your mind right. Make sure you're speaking to your team. You know, it's just a little things we should be doing every day. Communication is key. Communication with your team, your clients, your customers, people around you. Also, you know, what's interesting about this right now is more people are spending more time with their family, the ones closest to them. And there's going to be a lot of learning coming from that, that how you know who's really most important to you. Focus on the right groups, the right people, other people's knowledge. Anyone listening to this podcast today, you're listening to this because you're looking to siphon knowledge that can help you grow. So be really clear on the people you want in your environment that's going to stretch you and help you grow. Don't listen to the complainers. Don't listen to the doubters. Don't listen to the ones that are saying, this isn't going to work out. You're going to have to disassociate yourself from them. So everything you do needs to serve you. Your family, your community, your business, your clients. If it doesn't fit into those five categories, if it doesn't serve that purpose, don't even put your time or energy there. And I think that's a few things we can do to help ourselves out.
B
Well, and one of the biggest things, and this is just part of your normal business practice, what you coach. My normal business practice is the 90 day plan. Right. And the 90 day plan is really understanding where you can step back and forth, really create your next 90 days and stay very attuned to what it is that you're creating in your business and how important that is.
C
Yeah. And what's interesting, Katie, is certain, I mean, certain demographics, certain behaviors, some of us have no problem changing. Some of us don't like change. Well, for those of us who don't like change, guess what? You don't have a choice right now because the environment has changed. You're going to have to change. You're going to have to pivot. So sitting down with somebody doing some planning, and you know what, we do a lot quicker, we'll be checking in six weeks down the road instead of 90 days down the road and seeing exactly where at. So when you get this on paper.
B
This is, this is. You're pointing to your head, whatever you're thinking about.
C
Oh, you have a plan, Katie? Oh, yeah. It's all in here. Yeah, that's, that's great. How's that working out for you? Let's take it from here and let's put it on paper. Because when you put it on paper, you just increase your chances. And here's something else. When you put it on paper, you just increase your chances of accomplishment. And then when you tell people you've increased your chances of accomplishing it more because you put it out there in the universe. And then when you get an accountability partner to make sure you're doing what you say you're going to do, it increase your chances even more so when you get clear. And plus, if you have action steps you plan to take each and every week and each and every day to move forward, your focus is working on your business to move forward instead of looking at what's happening and getting stuck. So all these little things we can do make a big difference.
B
And so we talked about attitude, talking about action. Share with us about results.
C
Well, I'll tell you what I was telling my clients. I said, you know, you're going to see people, you're going to find out a lot about yourself. And I'm learning a lot about myself. I'm learning a lot about my clients. And the results are sometimes not monetary. I had a gentleman call me on Wednesday at 5 o' clock and he told me, coach, I just got to let you know that with what you're doing with me, my brother, my dad, our organization, you've really leaned on me to be a better leader. You've had me read the right books. You've had me stretch way outside my comfort zone. And I want to tell you, there's no way I could be showing up the way I'm showing up today if it wasn't for you. I was a totally different person a year ago, and I would have broke. I had other clients say, like, I'm so fortunate to have someone like you guide me through this. And that's the results, because that's the juice when I just know that one thing I can say, or just my strength and my energy alone will guide my clients through this. That's it. That's good enough for me right now. That's the results right there. As we do everything right now. You might not see the monetarily reward right now, but trust me, for those of you are doing it right now, the results will come down the road because a lot of people are breaking, A lot of people aren't doing it right. So we have an opportunity to come out the other side much better. Entrepreneurs, business people and people and people want to do business with winners and strivers and are out there to serve. So this is your chance to really build your brand, to be the per. The people that people want to grasp onto and do business with.
B
You know, I'm glad you say that because I've often been. I've been thinking and talking about, you know, in times of crisis, you're right, like people will like kind of bow out, crumble, and just can't. And that's okay. So there is definitely more opportunity. So if you are thinking about starting a business or should I continue my business or whatever it is, the answer is yes. And the answer is really with even more service and over communication with your clients, it's interesting that you're talking about like the results. So I had reached out to a client back in February and I hadn't heard back from them. And I was just in bed last night just kind of like trying to clean up the email box a little bit. And I saw an email from them and it was just like the tenderness, it just touches my heart because they got married, right? And I do couples work. So, you know, they said we couldn't, by the way, we got married on the stage and we couldn't have done what we did without you. And it was just like like, that's, like, very touching. And especially, like now, like, that was, like, my biggest win for the day. And even today as I read that stuff and of course, hearing from Startup Nation and what they're doing and they're creating and just, you know, even when we just get like, the thank you for doing what you do emails, like, that's the stuff that keeps us going. You know, it's not like, hey, selling a piece of paperwork. It's like, this was really helpful, or this is how my practice grew. And as therapists, you know that's going to happen with you and your clients because your clients are going through crisis, right? And it's how you help them navigate that. I know for some of my sessions are related to the impacts of the crisis. I'm socially isolated and I'm feeling down, I'm feeling depressed, and we're just there with them. Or they might just be about their everyday issues that they were originally coming in for. And so when we can really serve them, either way, it's really important. And it is an also great time to really just take a step back and create that content, that communication, all the stuff that you've been wanting to do for your business. For those of you who have the time. I know that there are, like, some single parents with three kids home and trying to run a business, and there's barely any time because you're. You're the everything right now. So you're probably doing the best that you can. I know you're doing the best that you can. You know, give yourself some grace and compassion.
C
You know, I'll also add, Katie, that for every person listening, if have faith and trust in yourself, a lot of times we don't think we're doing enough. However, you could have one conversation with friend or a colleague or a client, and that conversation, which you don't think is giving a lot, it could be the one thing that saves their marriage, saves their career, gets them to get them to shift. We're working on becoming our best. And don't discount being authentic and speaking from your heart, because that energy and that one thing you say could be turn somebody's life totally around. You might not know it then, but you'll find out later because you just said, I got an email, say we got married. Like, you made the difference in our life. And that is a shining spark for your day to keep you going. So don't anybody on this podcast doubt yourself and have less faith because you have what you need to deliver the goods. And when you Believe that, and you do it authentically. That's all you need.
B
And one of the things that you've taught me, Michael, is having a wins wall. Right. And so if you have a hard time remembering the things that you've done for your clients and things like that, make a win wall of, like, the wins that you've helped them achieve. So whenever you're down or not feeling inspired or feeling like you're not doing enough, just take a look at that, and you can just remind yourself, you know, and that is so important. I'm glad that you said that, because I know for me and Kate, we've been in that place of we're not doing enough. Oh, we have. This is a good. Where are we going to fit this? Oh, my gosh. And it's just really hard to want to serve so much, but find that balance of keeping the vision, keeping a steady pace so we can care for ourselves and others. Any final thoughts as we wrap up this awesome podcast today?
C
Well, it's interesting. I was just saying, you know, tap into yourself. I would wager to bet everybody on this podcast, somewhere along their life, had an adversity that they had to overcome. And I learned something a long time ago that many of us listening to this podcast listen to, watch videos, read a book, go to a movie, go to an inspirational workshop, all to be inspired, to get some inspiration or motivation so it can give us the juice to go out there and make things happen. But then I would wager to bet that everybody had something in their past that they had to meet with adversity that didn't think they can get it done, but they went and got it done, and they look back and say, wow, I did that. And I would remind you all to write that down and tap into that strength, because we all have what we need, but sometimes we forget it's there. So every single one of us, every single one of you listening today has exactly what you need. The strength to tap into, to dig it out, knowing that you did it before and you can do it again. So tap into that, trust yourself, and go out there and just be the beacon of light.
B
Awesome. And the cool thing as we begin to wrap up, Michael is actually one of the first four of our actual podcasts. So Michael joined us way back in 2016 when we started our fourth podcast, which was all about time mastery. So we will include that in the show notes in case you are needing some time mastery help. Michael, where can people get ahold of you and find out more about you?
C
Well, Michael Dill at actioncoach.com is my email address. Business coachmichaeldill.com is my website. I am Monday morning with coach Michael. This Friday I will be doing a mastermind group. Just search me out. I will be doing webinars mastermind groups. I have a video that goes out every Monday morning. You can get some tips from. If you want to find me, you will be able to find me.
B
Awesome. Well, we thank you so much for joining us for a second round during this time. I greatly appreciate you being here. Startup Nation. I will say join us next time. Again, I don't know what's going to be next. It could be changed around but what our prediction is going to be next. Our next podcast topic looks like it will be Hal Elrod's Miracle Morning. But who knows, we might change that around during this time. We'll get back to our regularly scheduled, more specific, more structured when this crisis begins to dissipate and kind of, you know, the new normal life begins to resume. So nation, you know what, as you listen to this podcast, I think the greatest gift that you could do if you're listening to this podcast and you're like, I know someone who could really use this podcast, just share the link with them, text them, say, hey, I was thinking about you. That helps us serve more people, helps us serve you, but also you know when you're thinking about other people and you share something with them that also makes them feel good. So join us next time and we'll see you then. As we always say from Startup Nation, thank you for allowing us to inspire you guys. From Startup to mastery. Have an awesome and inspired day everybody. Take care.
