Katie
Hey everybody. Welcome back to another episode of the Private Practice Startup Podcast. We are glad to have you and especially this is a very important and big announcement episode. So if you're joining us for the first time, welcome. And if you've been a lawyer listener, this will probably come as some very big news. But before I reveal what that is, Kate and I hope you joined us last week as we talked about eight years behind the mic, really just sharing our podcasting journey. Really the benefits, the challenges, the evolution, and just overall our journey. So we just kind of took a walk down memory lane and just shared with you what a podcasting journey looks like behind the scenes. Really behind the mic. So check that out. If you haven't checked it out before you go, I am joined by. Go ahead.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Yes. So it's Dr. Kate Campbell here. And I haven't had butterflies before a podcast episode in like, years, Years, A long time. I have butterflies before this episode. Little mix of anxiety and excitement. And I'm sure you guys are wondering what could possibly be going on. Katie, did you want to share the title for today's episode?
Katie
Sure. So it's just going to be me and Kate and you all as you listen. And so today it is an end of an error and we're saying a fond farewell to the podcasting journey. This will be. It's funny, it was like a wonderful cry. I just felt like I was getting choked up. So this will be our very last podcast. I didn't think I was going to get choked up, honestly. I was coming into this. Com and then with you and your butterfly discussion, I have butterflies.
Dr. Kate Campbell
I got all sorts of emotions flowing through me. It is bittersweet, for sure, and quite emotional for us to, you know, share with you all how we made our decision to retire the podcast after eight years. I mean, this is 367th episode of Katie and I showing up and, you know, having our different types of episodes, guests, solo episodes, panel discussions, you know, you and I just showing up together and regardless of what life brings our way, just continuing to support Startup Nation and showing up and sharing our lives with people, sharing, you know, as much wisdom as we possibly could with you all along this journey. And it's a decision that Katie and I did not make lightly. And so we want to kind of talk through that with you guys to let you know where we're coming from and kind of what's informing our decision to retire the podcast after, you know, being one of the longer standing podcasts in our space for practice builders. We got started in 2016 and here we are, 2024, the end of 2024, we, we really thought about when we wanted to retire the podcast and when it would make the most sense. And at the end of the year here, you know, we're right smack dab in the holidays. This seems like the most pivotal time to do that. The private practice startup has always been a side hustle for Katie and I, and it's something that grew into something that was so much bigger than either one of us could ever have anticipated, that either one of us could ever have anticipated. All the emotions are making me stumble over my words a little bit. And we've needed to make many modifications and adjustments, you know, in pivots over the years as we've continued to work in the private practice startup and serving Startup Nation, providing as much content and products and services to support you all in the private practice journey. And we also have other thriving businesses and lives and families and kids and all sorts of things that need our attention. So as the private practice startup grew much bigger than we anticipated that it would, that became difficult to manage at different points in time in our journey, and we learned how to systemize and outsource as much as possible so we could stay focused on the areas of the business that, you know, were higher level and most important for us to be involved in and most passionate for us. And so that way we've been able to continue to serve Startup Nation. And, you know, over the past year or even longer, I think we've, you know, we've given so many different topics that we've been asking ourselves, how do you know when you've reached saturation with the types of content that you can produce? And how many times can we talk about different aspects regarding branding and marketing and finances and all the different aspects to building a business? And we've really tried to get as creative as possible and engage our audience as much as possible so that our content is always meeting your needs. And just more recently, we've realized that we really feel like we're in a place where we've saturated the content making process for the podcast for Startup Nation. And we really want to go out, you know, in a, in a positive place and, you know, where we're not struggling and not feeling like we're having a hard time getting through the episodes that we, you know, feel like we've done our best for Startup Nation to serve you all with the podcast and continuing to provide that quality content that you all expect from us and that we enjoy producing. So our passions have evolved into different areas and, you know, I've, I've, I'm sure you all have heard me talk about Bayview Therapy. That's my group practice here in South Florida. We have three locations and 32 clinicians at this point. And I'm wanting to continue to scale that and potentially add some additional offices and in order to focus on some of the other business areas that we're involved in. You know, there's just sometimes you need to take a step back and take one of the balls out of the air and the podcast, it just feels like it's the right time for us to be stepping back and retiring the podcast. So, Katie, what do you want to add?
Katie
Well, before I do that, let's just take a quick moment for our sponsor. Trying to navigate all the things as a therapist is hard, especially when you're trying to stay focused on the most important thing, your clients. Of course, that's why Therapy Notes makes billing, scheduling, note taking and telehealth incredibly easy. Also, for all you prescribers out there, Therapy Notes is proudly offering e prescribed services. One of the things that I love about Therapy Notes is that they really have the clinician in mind. Working with A company like TherapyNotes helps streamline the back end of your business. If you're a busy therapist, good quality support is essential. That's why TherapyNotes has telephone support seven days a week. No wonder why they're the number one top rated EHR and why more than a hundred thousand therapists trust them. TherapyNotes is offering two months of their EHR absolutely free, no strings attached. So go to therapy notes.com and enter the code PPS. That's therapy notes.com and enter the Code PPS. I mean, I think you said, you know a lot of it. As we were thinking about what should our last podcast episodes be? Definitely check out the one that we are referencing behind the mic. That's a fun one, but it was interesting because we're looking at podcast topics and it was even on many different kind of websites. We've done so much, we've done so much of the ideas and like Kate said, it is interesting to read A Point of Saturation. We could keep talking about similar things and other things and ideas, but you know, we've talked about so much in 360 plus episodes. So there, there's a lot, a lot of this business with what we've done with the Private Practice Startup has been to model our own alignment and values with our business. So there's been very difficult decisions to make and ebb and flow through the business and pull back and things like that together. Even though sometimes we might have not been on the exact same page. Kate and I have an amazing business relationship where we respect each other and really would never want to, you know, do the podcast without each other. So, you know, there's a lot of stuff to consider and you know, we didn't want to really disappoint our community, stay true to ourselves, like I said, being in alignment. And I would also want to say you just really want to, you know, honor our team at the Private Practice Startup, our long standing listeners. If you're coming in and listening to this as your first episode. The beautiful thing about podcasts is they're evergreen and we have podcasts on our website that are chronological order by episode. There's also podcasts by topic. So the beauty of a podcast is really leaving a legacy. And so this legacy is here to stay and you can always catch up on other episodes as well.
Dr. Kate Campbell
So yeah, yeah, it's an interesting space to be in because, you know, we, we feel very strongly about our commitments and following through with our commitments and our relationships with our sponsors and Startup Nation with each one of our loyal listeners and then, you know, our team, our team in the background that really helps support what we do with Ruth and our ambassadors and the Facebook community and our sponsors who have continued to support us and being able to serve you all with this content. There's just so many aspects that lives have been impacted in many different ways and it's so bittersweet to come to the realization and really have that clarity that it's time and we both feel on the same page that it is time to retire the podcast. We didn't want to disappoint people, but it is, as Katie said, so, so, so important for us to be able to stay in alignment with what we're needing our lives to look like and this area that we are with both of our businesses and life stages and being just ready to transition on and focus on some different things. So I think it would be just kind of interesting for us to reflect back on some of the most memorable episodes that we've had. And.
Katie
Yeah, that's a great idea. So before we do that, let's just take a quick moment for our sponsor and then we're going to dive into those memorable episodes.

Startup Nation There's a lot of perks to being a private practice owner. Doing your own bookkeeping and filing taxes is not one of them. How much should I pay myself? How much should I save for taxes? Do I have to pay quarterly taxes? How do I pay less in annual taxes? These are all questions we hear from therapists all the time, which is why we've partnered with the financial experts at Heard, the accounting platform built for therapist entrepreneurs. The 2024 tax season is right around the corner and Heard can file your business and personal taxes with ease. On average, heard saves therapists 60 hours per year in financial record keeping and $5,000 in taxes. How many more clients could you see if you got 60 hours back per year at $150 per session, that's $9,000 in extra income. And when you join Heard, you get access to a team of bookkeeping and tax professionals who will guide you on your journey as you build your business. With peace of mind about your finances, you can put more energy into client care where it matters most. Schedule a free 15 minute consultation call today at joinherd.com private practicestartup and use code STARTUP15 at checkout and you'll get 15% off all annual plans.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Yeah. So as we reflect, I know last episode we talked about the reflections of our eight year journey and we talked about some of the struggles that we've been through personally and professionally and what we've learned, lessons learned and challenges and benefits of podcasting. I think it'd be helpful for us to just kind of reflect on some of the most memorable episodes. If you all have listened to us for a long time or some of those earlier episodes, they're quite humorous because, you know, our style of podcasting has changed and evolved and we used to be much more structured. We've had so many amazing guests over the years and are so grateful for everybody that has come on the show and been vulnerable and shared their stories and struggles and their missions for how to how they, you know, really impact the world. We had my dad on as a guest one time And Katie's mom on as a guest one time. I can remember having Dr. Sean Davis on. He was our first guest, and he's been on many times since then. We've had so many practice builders who we've just become great friends with, which is amazing. You know, Laura Long is always a hoot to have her on. And Allison per year. And Maureen Werbach. We've had crazy places that people have podcasted. I think the first time Maureen was podcasting from the closet and then podcasting in her backyard with the beautiful Chicago weather. We had Roy Huggins on May He Rest In Peace. He's unfortunately passed away, but his legacy lives on through his podcast episodes. And he had actually podcasted from a vault, which was super cool. There's so many people that we've had on. We've had Mike Michalowicz shout out to him on four times for his different books, and that's been amazing. Who else comes to mind? Katie?
Katie
Yeah, I mean, Mike McCalliv. He is really my favorite business author. If you guys haven't read him. He's funny, he's smart. We got to actually have him on with Casey Compton because she. I never remember the name. When you do, what is it called? You know, I'm talking about Kate. Like, when you write a subset of a book, like, oh, I don't know, created a book from one of his books, there's a specific. So I know he did that as. As well as Julie Harris had also done that. But having Mike on is amazing. Interestingly enough, I was at a conference that Hal Elrod. And if that name sounds familiar to you, it's from the Miracle Morning, and he was presenting, and Kate and I had referenced his structure of the Miracle Morning in our E course, and he was giving out his book at the conference, and I was like, oh, my God, I'm going to ask him to be on the podcast. Then I couldn't listen to really anything he said. My palms were sweaty. And I just went up to him and I told him and asked him, and he was on our podcast. So that was really amazing. I know you referenced Dr. Annalyn Schooley. I feel like it wouldn't be enough just to give her a shout out, but. So Dr. Annalyn Schooley is really kind of brings Kate and I together. So Kate and I wouldn't be here.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Had it not been for Schooly.
Katie
Yeah, the school of school. We met in supervision, and Kate and I would often have supervision together. And then we both loved schooling so much that we both did the Double amft. Supervision of supervision. And then Schoolie twisted our arms, as we say, to resurrect the Broward association of Marriage and Family Therapists. And that's really the pivotal moment where Kate and I realized how well we worked together. She was president, I was vice president, and that's what led us to creating the private practice startup. So Kay and I really go, like, way back.
Dr. Kate Campbell
That was 2006. 2006. Here we are going into 2025. That's almost two decades.
Katie
We almost know each other for. That's crazy.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Where does the time go?
Katie
Yeah.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Wow. Yeah.
Katie
So one of the other people that we had on was Perry Rosenblum, if that name sounds familiar. Perry was the creator of Brighter Vision. He was able to sell his company, which is amazing. We actually met him when we did a conference where. I'm not remembering. I just remember hanging out in the restaurant. So that was cool. One of the funny episodes, and this was an early episode, we had a woman who did like fashion design and helping people dress for their best. And during the episode she went, meant to say, dress your best, but she was like, and you have to dress your breast. And it was just like a very funny moment. So that just kind of sticks out as well. So those are a few of my favorite.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Yeah. It's funny because we used to edit our podcast a lot and we would edit mistakes like that. And then we realized that people love authenticity and they love realness and mistakes and imperfections. Makes it perfect. And so our brand has evolved. Our podcasts have evolved. They used to be much more structured and now they just kind of flow and they're more conversational and, you know, things that happen in life show up on the podcast. So our brand is continuing to evolve, and although we're retiring the podcast, we are going to continue to re release previous episodes so that you can continue to soak in all of the information that we've shared in this 367 episodes. Because that's a lot of episodes. And you could be listening for over a year to an episode every single day and still have not heard them all. So that's pretty cool. We're going to continue to re release those. For those who are on our email list, you. You can always find the previous episodes on our website or listen to them on itunes or any of the other podcast platforms that we're on. And we are, we're going to continue to offer our attorney approved private practice paperwork and our marketing E course, just like we're doing currently. So our brand is going to continue. We're going to continue to support Startup Nation. We're just not going to be releasing any new episodes of podcast. And, you know, I'm going to miss it, I have to say, because it's just been a constant that no matter what's happening in life, where we are with life, our businesses, our families, you know, personal things going on, we've just always had this consistency of showing up and getting on the mic and, you know, being there for Startup Nation. And so it's like this is. I don't know, it just feels so strange to not be having that. And it feels like something that I'm definitely going to miss. I'm so grateful that we've had this opportunity to have this platform and to have a voice in this way, and we've grown so much as individuals, as business partners, and it's just been an amazing journey, and we couldn't have done it without each one of our listeners. And so we just are so grateful for you all, Startup Nation, and your loyal listenership and support throughout the years, and also to our fellow fellow practice builders across the globe supporting us and collaborating with us. And I'm really going to miss those connections and conversations. And we'll have to find new ways of being able to, you know, connect. Connect with that, stay connected with that.
Katie
Yeah. And it's just been so really cool to hear folks feedback over the years, whether it's through a review or just sending an email or how the podcast helped them or who they connected with through the podcast. So that's been really cool. You know, the podcast has been an additional revenue stream for us, and it was very, very lucrative, and we're very grateful for that. So, you know, there. There's that. And also too, you know, podcasting has provided employment, you know, for folks, for us. So we have a podcasting editor, our assistant, our social media person. So, you know, to be an impact and provide employment for others is really important. So we don't take that when we're also considering this, because our team members have been amazing. I don't think we could have asked for better team members. So that's also been very important.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Absolutely.
Katie
And, you know, just some things that we're looking forward to is really focusing on one business. Even though this has been a side hustle for us, you know, there's still that. That compartment of space. Right. That you kind of have to bobble back and forth. And if you're a person who is like me, who has 20 windows open on their computer, already and you 10 different posts and notes going on for 10 different things. It's just a lot to jump back and forth between things. We've done it, we've done it with ease and grace and in a very minimal amount of time a week, which has been amazing. But it is going to be nice to be able to focus on one business at a time. Having to give multiple things your attention, as you all know, is very difficult.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Absolutely. You know, it's. I love the analogy of all the tabs open on the window on the computer because what Katie and I do for both businesses is all on the computer, you know, and we now that I've retired from seeing clients at baby therapy, ever since my youngest son was born, everything that I do is pretty much on the computer. And having all those tabs open for Bayview, having all the tabs open for the private practice startup, having the tabs open for the kids schedules and sporting things and, you know, personal life and trying to put self care in the mix and family things and, you know, husband stuff. I mean, there's just so many tabs open and shifting from all those different things creates that decision fatigue and just gives me brain fog. So I'm looking forward to having less tabs open in my brain and really being able to give more to the areas that I am focusing on moving forward with Bayview and being present for my kids and family and all of that good stuff. And Katie, I know you're looking forward to continuing to be focusing on leadership opportunities and making a big impact in other spaces. And, you know, this is a pivotal point for us. It's emotional, bittersweet. I hope it hasn't been too heavy of an episode as you guys are listening and you're going, wah, wah.
Katie
And if it is, that's okay.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Yeah, yeah, that's true. It's, it's, it's, it's definitely an emotional episode for us. And, you know, ultimately, we just want to thank you, Startup Nation, for your loyal listenership over the years. And we just couldn't have done what we do without you. We have loved all of the messages and feedback and, you know, hearing how our episodes have impacted you and your life personally and your business professionally. And that's, you know, really been a fire for us that has kept us going and our sponsors, you know, this podcast wouldn't have been possible without you all. And all of these episodes are evergreen. So this is our legacy we're leaving behind. You know, we're leaving behind 367 episodes. Chock full of all sorts of business and marketing advice and our, you know, stories and the stories of those guests that we've have, we have had on, you know, that's going to live on and that's pretty powerful that our voices will continue even though we won't be recording new episodes anymore.
Katie
Yeah. And our assistant who's been with us for years, she's just amazing and she really does a lot of, you know, the post production behind the scenes, really making these podcasts live for you all. And she does it seamlessly with grace. I mean, if you had, if Ruth wasn't around, I don't know how I would get a podcast up. I would go to our system and look, but I would probably be very anxious and it would probably take me hours to do that.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Yeah. Our coach has been incredible. She's been our angel for sure in the wings, supporting us and really helping us to make a big impact.
Katie
Yeah. Our coaches, Kimberly Bonds brochure and Susan Block have been amazing. Our social media manager, Ina, Wow. We found her through Wise Hire, which is an amazing company. We actually did a podcast with them and she just took things by the rain. She's just been awesome in what she's done. And speaking of, I know that she actually has shared with us as we let go of the podcast part. She does have a little bit space open in her schedule and she loves working with therapists. So I will say, if you need a social media manager, Ina is amazing. You can reach out to us and we'd be happy to connect, connect you. And also too, you know, we have done multiple ways of getting the news out about our podcast, from our newsletters to the social media posts. But initially, Amy Crane from Social Lab Marketing was a big pillar in helping us navigate the world of Facebook ads. And then she sold her company to Jennifer Schwallenberger, who has been. And I can't say enough about Jennifer. She's just beyond amazing. I mean, you have a need, she answers, she has an answer. She helps guide you the strategies. So she's been amazing too. And then, you know, our initial team, Jessica Jefferson, April Andell, Erica Garrett, they were really our initial team. And we, I remember Kate, our very first launch of the podcast. So we were doing, I think the, was it called pre. Pre licensure courses, I believe licensure, renewal, licensure and renewal. But also it was the pre licensure courses. And Erica had come with us and we were getting ready to launch our first three episodes. And remember Erica was helping us do a video in the hotel room.
Dr. Kate Campbell
I do about. And we can remember the date. It was 6. 6 16.
Katie
Yes, yes. So, you know, Erica was substantial there and Sophia Robirosa. And what's been interesting about Sophia, one of the things that we created not related to the podcast was a networking group. And actually Sophia and Jessica took that networking group and ran with it. And it still exists today, which is so amazing. It's just, you know, when you look back over the impact, it was like there was an idea that was created and just kind of didn't fit for us because we're much more of a global brand. But, you know, we just want to give shout outs to them too, on this podcast.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Absolutely. Yeah. It was called Inspire and now it's called something different. And they just have Private Practice Connect. Yeah, Private Practice Connect. And it's done an amazing job. So if you're local here in Broward, definitely check that out. And yeah, so it. This is bittersweet, you guys. I can't believe it's our last episode. It feels kind of surreal, like it hasn't really hit yet, that this is actually us signing off on the mic.
Katie
Like a true mic drop. Drop. This is a true mic drop.
Dr. Kate Campbell
True mic drop.
Katie
Literally and figuratively.
Dr. Kate Campbell
Like, it just hasn't even. I. I just can't even fathom. I don't know, it's going to be weird not showing up and being like, hey, it's time to podcast. Yeah. So who knows? We might miss it and we might be like, wait, why did we. Why did we stop? And we might come back. You never know what's going to happen. But we'll be around. And we hope that you continue to stay inspired on your Private Practice journey. And. And that's where we'll end things. Right. Because there's not going to be a next episode. So just pay attention for those re releases of the previous episodes. And again, thanks so much, everybody.
Katie
Take care. Stay inspired.

Release Date: December 14, 2024
In Episode 367 of the Private Practice Startup Podcast, hosts Dr. Kate Campbell and Katie Lemieux announce the heartfelt decision to retire their beloved podcast after eight impactful years. This episode serves as a reflective farewell, celebrating the journey, achievements, and the vibrant community they've built alongside mental health professionals worldwide.
Katie opens the episode with an air of anticipation and emotion, stating:
"This is a very important and big announcement episode. So if you're joining us for the first time, welcome. And if you've been a long listener, this will probably come as some very big news." [00:38]
Dr. Kate Campbell adds her sentiments, revealing her unusual experience of feeling butterflies before the episode:
"I haven't had butterflies before a podcast episode in like, years... I have butterflies before this episode." [01:34]
Together, they declare that Episode 367 will be their final podcast installment, marking the end of an era for their listeners.
The decision to retire the podcast stems from multiple factors:
Content Saturation:
After producing over 367 episodes, Kate and Katie felt they had covered a vast array of topics essential to building a private practice. Kate reflects:
"We've realized that we really feel like we're in a place where we've saturated the content making process for the podcast..." [02:32]
Business Growth and Focus:
Both hosts have expanded their primary businesses beyond the podcast. Kate discusses the growth of Bayview Therapy:
"We have three locations and 32 clinicians at this point. And I'm wanting to continue to scale that and potentially add some additional offices..." [06:32]
Similarly, Katie expresses her desire to focus on leadership opportunities and other impactful areas.
Work-Life Balance:
Managing multiple ventures alongside personal lives became increasingly challenging. Kate shares her struggle with "decision fatigue and just gives me brain fog" due to juggling various responsibilities (22:19).
Kate and Katie take a nostalgic walk down memory lane, reminiscing about their eight-year journey since launching the podcast in 2016. They highlight the evolution from a structured format to a more conversational and authentic style, embracing imperfections that resonated with their audience.
"Our podcasts have evolved. They used to be much more structured and now they just kind of flow and they're more conversational..." [17:50]
The hosts celebrate the diverse and inspiring guests who have graced their podcast:
Katie shares a particularly memorable moment:
"We had a woman who did like fashion design and helping people dress for their best. And during the episode she went, meant to say, dress your best, but she was like, and you have to dress your breast. And it was just like a very funny moment." [17:50]
Initially focusing on pre-licensure courses and structured business advice, the podcast gradually embraced a more relaxed and authentic tone. Kate remarks on the shift towards realness and the importance of authenticity:
"People love authenticity and they love realness and mistakes and imperfections. Makes it perfect." [17:50]
This evolution helped in building a loyal and engaged community, fostering genuine connections and lasting friendships with guests.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to expressing heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the podcast's success:
Team Members:
Katie and Kate acknowledge their dedicated team, including podcasting editors, assistants, social media managers, and coaches. They highlight the indispensable role of individuals like Ruth, Ina, Amy Crane, and Jennifer Schwallenberger in navigating the complexities of podcast production and marketing.
Sponsors:
Although sponsors were briefly mentioned, the hosts ensured that their contributions were recognized as integral to the podcast's sustainability.
Listeners:
The hosts extend immense gratitude to their loyal listeners, the "Startup Nation," whose support and feedback fueled their passion:
"We just are so grateful for you all, Startup Nation, and your loyal listenership and support throughout the years..." [20:42]
With the podcast now retired, Dr. Kate Campbell and Katie Lemieux are redirecting their focus to their primary businesses:
Dr. Kate Campbell:
Plans to scale Bayview Therapy, potentially adding more locations and enhancing services to better support clients and clinicians.
Katie Lemieux:
Intends to concentrate on leadership roles and creating a broader impact in various professional arenas.
Both emphasize the importance of aligning their professional endeavors with their personal lives to achieve better balance and fulfillment.
"I'm looking forward to having less tabs open in my brain and really being able to give more to the areas that I am focusing on moving forward." [22:19]
As they bid farewell, Kate and Katie reflect on the significance of their podcasting journey, acknowledging the deep connections and the substantial legacy they've built. They reassure listeners that previous episodes remain accessible, ensuring the valuable insights and lessons continue to benefit aspiring private practitioners.
"This is our legacy we're leaving behind. You know, we're leaving behind 367 episodes. Chock full of all sorts of business and marketing advice and our stories..." [23:46]
The episode closes with a mix of sadness and optimism, embodying the bittersweet nature of endings and new beginnings.
Katie on the announcement:
"This is a true mic drop. Literally and figuratively." [28:17]
Kate on the decision:
"It's very bittersweet... It's time and we both feel on the same page that it is time to retire the podcast." [07:16]
Reflection on authenticity:
"People love authenticity and they love realness and mistakes and imperfections. Makes it perfect." [17:50]
