Welcome to Profit. This is Pajak, the podcast where we talk about business strategies and financial insights for the green industry. And today we're here at Pod House in Las Vegas, Nevada. We're covering the Con Expo, which is the largest landscape, excuse me, largest trade show in North America. And I've got Mike Garvey from the side Hustle Squad podcast joining me today. We've got some other friends that probably they might jump in a little bit later, but as things go. Mike, how you doing, man?
Mike Garvey
Well, thanks for having me. I'm becoming a reoccurring guest here. Yeah, I hope it's, I hope your audience enjoys it.
John Pajak
I hope so too.
Mike Garvey
Like Jesus again.
John Pajak
So, yeah, we, we, we're, we're here at Pod House. There's several other podcasters here with us. We got Larry Delisante, who's also co host of the side Hustle Squad podcast. If you guys haven't listened to that yet, you got a do it. Eric Triplett, the pond digger, also known from the, he's the host of the Deep End. He may be joining us a little bit later. And Naylor Taliaferro, who's left town but is the host of LCR Summit and excuse me, LCR Media podcast. We all got together and having a good time, but we're also getting a lot of work done bringing you guys content and, you know, covering the show.
Huge.
If you've never been to this show in Vegas, it's not really lawn scape or lawn and landscape related at all. But if you like big equipment, this is an amazing.
Mike Garvey
If you like equipment and it may not even be equipment for your field. If you just like equipment, this is the place to be. I mean, I would say you think equip is big. This is equip is probably one eighth of this show. Yeah. Just by the, the size, the, the size of the equipment. The attendance is over is 140,000. It's, it's overwhelming. I think we. Yesterday we took a kind of look around, kind of could see where some things are. Some rooms I did not feel comfortable in because I didn't know what these things were. These ginormous. You saw, you saw the trailer, like things with like totally the heaviest of heavy equipment. And then we went into one area where I was like, okay, I feel better here now. There's, you know, some. There's a, there's a mower, there's a skag. I saw Relco. I'm like, okay, the brands that I know, you know, and it was, it was, it was cool. And then. So we got to see that yesterday. But then make a plan. Last night we all came back here. You came in from to town, we had dinner, we hung out. We got some time outside. We have a pool here, palm trees. It's multiple bedrooms. Another pool house in the back where Nailers they.
John Pajak
There's a whole house back there.
Mike Garvey
I'm taking, I'm taking it because, you know, triplet and Larry are up at 5:30 in the morning you know, barking orders at their teams back home and all that stuff. It's funny.
John Pajak
Or just like in mid conversation. Hey, I'm answering a sales call right now.
Mike Garvey
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't care if you're talking to me. It doesn't matter. Doesn't stop.
John Pajak
Do we have to leave?
Mike Garvey
Right? But, but it's really cool. And this was the concept, you know, back at Equip, Eric stayed with us and we talked about this and like, man, we lose so much time after the show. We love pod row and we love what we do there. But then, you know, okay, where are we going to dinner or are we losing time waiting to go to dinner? And then like we're not capturing these conversations that we have after hours. And, and I think people want to hear more, more about what goes on. Us covering stuff and us talking about our businesses and us essentially living together. It seems like this is becoming like a family reunion. Right? We were just in, we were just in New Orleans. We're, we're, we're here. I'm going to hopefully see you in Pittsburgh for Cornell Max event. And then it's like the ball just keeps rolling. It's cool. It's awesome.
John Pajak
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it's like there is a whole bunch of stuff. It's like. But now I think with the. The pod house, we're. We're literally. You're good. You guys are getting a glimpse of, like, my regular life of.
Mike Garvey
Right, your sleep schedule. Yeah.
John Pajak
You're like.
Mike Garvey
But. But it's cool. Like, like, you know, you learn a lot about people, right? It's like when you travel with them and live with the. It's like, cool. It's like, you know, everyone. What. What. What motivates you, what. You know, but, like, even watching, like, I watch triplet and I, like, see how his day. Right. All right. I have a coaching call at 8am and 9. He's very, like, regimented and, like, has reminders and everything. Like, I need to do this. Okay, okay. Okay, let's do that. You know, like. Like that. And then it's fun. It's cool to, like, you know, see everything, you know, see the people that you interact with from afar, but actually be under one roof.
John Pajak
Right.
And, you know, like, when we do events, we have our schedule or who we're interviewing. You know, we'll have all types of guests on. But then, you know, not to say that there isn't good content after the fact. Some of the best content comes with after the fact, and we don't record it, you know, and that's.
Mike Garvey
Yeah.
John Pajak
Some of the stuff that people love to hear.
Mike Garvey
You know, a lot of times too, we were saying, it's like, hey, I'd love to get you on my podcast. And you're out of. And you're like, okay, when do you want to do it? We could do it tonight. Oh, where do I meet me. It's like, oh, like my hotel room.
John Pajak
Here's my hotel room, buddy.
Mike Garvey
Yeah. It's like, okay. Hello. You know, I don't know. It's kind of weird. It's not intent intended to be.
John Pajak
No.
Mike Garvey
But I think, like, you know, we have people. We're gonna have people at these other events. Like, hey, man, come back to. Come back to. You know, this is. We'd love to have you. You don't have to stay here, but we'd love to come by, have dinner with us. We can make it like a, you know, a thing. And that's where I see equipment being, you know, hopefully having, you know, we have close to Between. There's a couple. The location, I think, is close to 10 bedrooms. And then, you know, we're gonna have hopefully bring a chef. And so, like, no one has to worry about a thing. It's just, like, done like, okay, here, like, podcast and there's multiple studios Right. Like, okay, there's a patio. Like a rooftop. Mm. This rooftop. This. This. This section. That section. Even here, it broke down that Naylor had his own setup. And then I had this set up here. We had two studios in one, in, like, one compound, which I think is great. And then last night, after we went, we ingested all of what we saw and then digested it. Right. That, like, say, wow, okay, well, what do we want to do tomorrow? Well, let's hit these brands. Let's go talk to Ro. Let's go talk to Vermeer, and let's do podcasts in the booth with them. Not with necessarily with the whole board and headsets and everything, but let's go mobile. Let's make these. It's Mike. These guys up, and let's have the conversations that we would have with them about their equipment or about what they want to talk about.
John Pajak
Yeah, we're in their habitat, not. They're not in ours.
Mike Garvey
Right.
John Pajak
And it's like, I think part of that, too, is, like, how many times has this happened to you? And it's happened to me quite a few times where somebody will come on the show and they get a little intimidated by the board and the headset and all that stuff, and they kind of freeze up, and you don't see how they really are. But when we go to them, we're
Mike Garvey
in their habitat, and they're super comfortable and, like. And that's a skill, too. Like, I really see it, too, especially in sales. And now I'm seeing it with, like, engineering, manufacturing, these big companies, it's like, they know their products. Like, hey, well, how long this take to. To develop? And, you know, and why is this knob here? And why do. Like, you're in. They. They. They know this. And. Yeah, right. You're in their habitat, and they're more comfortable. Curtains down a little bit. It's like the. It's very. More chill for them.
John Pajak
Yeah, definitely. Which brings better content for you guys.
Mike Garvey
Yeah. And I think it was cool because we had, like, a little min. Entourage rolling, and it was like, hey, we got, you know, pothouse stuff on. Like, who are these guys? Like, oh, what's going on? Like, like, someone from Mack Trucks, like, came up to me like, hey, what. What is that? Like, what. What's pothouse like? Oh, well, it's a cluster of us from the lawn and landscape industry that have a pothouse. We stay under one roof, but, like, we're recording back at the house, but also, like, recording in the boots with different vendors and stuff. She's like, wow, okay.
John Pajak
Like, do you talk to Matt about mad craps? We're like, no, I don't have one. Like, no, no. I mean, you know, I was like,
Mike Garvey
I want to hang out with the dog.
John Pajak
Yeah, exactly.
Mike Garvey
They. They had Wilson.
John Pajak
Yeah, Wilson. Wilson the bulldog. Man, he was cool.
Mike Garvey
I got a picture of him. I'll put it on Instagram. But it was cool, you know, but like, oh, what's going on here now? I think we're developing, like, a strategy moving forward. It's like, oh, man. Like, let's. Okay, we'll come to you. We'll set up the lighting, we'll set up the mics, and, like, we'll do the video, audio, everything, and like, boom, let's go. And then, you know, and then you see a vision, too, with Pod Row in the future, too, right?
John Pajak
Yeah. You know, Naylor, Tally Farrow definitely had the brainchild of it, but, you know, we've been doing it for several years now. And, you know, since we've been at Equip Expo the past, you know, what, three years, I think is. Two years. Two years. We've just been doing Pod Row for multiple years. Two years at Equip. And I want to. I really want to make a spectacle of it, man. I really think you're on the.
Mike Garvey
You're. Man, you. You. You could do anything you set your mind to, man. Like, I've seen it. Like, you got. You got the brain power. You got the, you know, you got the stamina to. To work into the night. So I think. And that was kind of. That was motivation to. For me and Triplet to develop Pod House was from Pod Row is like, man, they got. This is cool. And it's like, I don't want to stop it at 5 o'. Clock.
John Pajak
Pack up, dude. Even though, you know, that's the cool thing is, like, I really think Pod House really compliments Pod Row because, yeah, during Pod Row hours, we are with the. The. The vendors, the manufacturers, all those CEOs.
Mike Garvey
CEOs, like, owners.
John Pajak
Like, you're sitting there, you're like, this guy's got too many commas in his bank account. Like, can I talk to this guy? It's right, you can. And, you know, we. We could bring that to. To our listeners and everything. But the other part is now if we have our, you know, Pod House, where people can actually come in and be guests and whatever. Yeah. It's not a party.
Mike Garvey
No, it's not.
John Pajak
It's not at all. But at the same time, it's like, hey, we couldn't catch you during regular hours because you were working. Yeah.
Mike Garvey
You know, come tonight, you know, like we're going to hopefully have multiple studios. But hey, John's going to be on the rooftop with X person, you know, interviewing them.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Or whatever.
Mike Garvey
The 7 to 7:45 time slot.
John Pajak
Right.
Mike Garvey
It's all going to be like organized.
John Pajak
But you know, it's like, hey, come and see how it is. Not only, hey, become a guest on our show and tell us about, you know, like, especially because we're doing this at all events, tell us what you really feel about the event. You know, it's a more chill environment. It's not like a busy hall that we're mostly stuck in during like when we have pot row and everything. It's like a spectacle. It's like, well, this is still cool, but it's chill.
Mike Garvey
Yeah.
John Pajak
And you know, you could decompress a little bit. You don't have as much craziness going around you.
Mike Garvey
No. You kick your shoes off, right. Wear your feet up, have a beer and just like, let's like, you know, let's, let's jump into whatever you want to jump into. Business problems, you know, numbers. Yeah, anything. And let's, let's do it.
John Pajak
And that's a. This is not vacation time at all. But you know, there's a really cool setup here. Like this place is beautiful. You know, it's got a pool, it's got the pool house, it's got the main house. But inside the main house, you know, we're looking, we're like in the communal area where it's like the living room slash kitchen and there's a ping pong table, there's a pool table, there's Mortal Kombat and Pong. And you know, out back here we got all these other cool games and stuff. It's like, yeah, this is still cool, chill hang out and everything. But you know, it's not vacation because I said, you know, like even with, you know, actually everybody has asked me for something like, hey, can you take a look at this for me real quick?
Mike Garvey
Hey, can you do this? Yeah.
John Pajak
Can you take a look at my website? Can you take a look at this? Can you give me some advice on that? You know, it's like, yeah, oh yeah, yeah, no problem. You know.
Mike Garvey
Right.
John Pajak
And like you said, you kind of get an insight of people. Even though I came in late yesterday because I had a. I was out in Texas, you know, for most of
Mike Garvey
the day yesterday, we've been traveling the country yeah. In a day.
John Pajak
It's like 3. I. You know, I left my home at 3:00am I to get to start that journey. I didn't sleep the night before. And then even when I got here, I think most humans would just collapse. And I got such a third wind from hanging out with you guys that I didn't go to bed until like 4:30 or 5:00 clock this morning.
Mike Garvey
Right.
John Pajak
And that's when everybody starts waking up and I'm like 7:48. All right, that's enough time.
Mike Garvey
That's enough charge.
John Pajak
I put, I put the dead phone on the charger for a little bit. It's still got a little bit. I got like 23%. That's good.
Mike Garvey
It's fine. That works. Whatever.
John Pajak
Back when I was getting my lawn care business off the ground, I was juggling routes, invoices, and customer notes with paper and prayers. It was chaos. Until I found Yardbook. Yardbook gave me the structure. It helped me track chemicals, route efficiently, inv voice faster, and most importantly, it helped me grow a profitable business. If you're tired of duct taping your systems Together, go to yardbook.com and sign up for free. And if you're ready to go premium, use promo code PAYJACK to get your first 30 days on me.
Mike Garvey
We learned a lot today, though. It's like we need, you know, everyone found their job, found their niche at the boots of. Of, you know, with, you know, Eric Triplet was doing the interviewing and photos and like, it was very cool. Think it was, it was a good experiment. I think we're finding our way with that. And then, you know, we're going to. This is the pilot. You know, this, it, it reminds me of like, you know, everyone started somewhere, right? It's like Seinfeld, you know, pilot episode. All these shows have pilots, right? It's like.
John Pajak
And, you know, this is an excellent one because, like, nobody's. Well, knock on wood, we haven't gotten through the Larry vortex. Yeah, there's something that could still happen, but we're basically winding down things a little bit. We'll have a. We've got like 12 hours left. Yeah. You know, essentially. So I think we're. It's pretty smooth sailing. But this is like a really good indicator of like, what possibilities are in the future for us. And not only the content that we normally bring, but just, you know, the, the potential of grabbing, you know, not like friends, you know, bringing them out, like I said. But again, you, you have an pod house provides an environment to where we could get different interviews and more interviews from people that maybe we couldn't get before.
Mike Garvey
Yeah. It extends the hours until.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Mike Garvey
Till, you know.
John Pajak
So, like, you guys will start working like, I do, where I just work all the time, right.
Mike Garvey
Yeah, Right. But it just was like, we lose a lot after the show, and it's like, everyone goes, all right, I'm going to go back to my room. I'm going to go. You know, we'll meet up for dinner. Where are we meeting? All right, let's. I'll see at 8 o'. Clock. All right, well, you know, that's three hours of potential.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Mike Garvey
Conversations that we have, and we've had them, and, like, we're just hanging out in the rooms or whatever, but, like, this is so much better. And then we're not like, oh, also, too. All right, where are we going to dinner? And, like, do we decide yet? All right, let's go there. And then we wait there for an hour, and then we have more conversations. Like, we could be doing this while everything's already. And then it's ready. And boom. Like, and then we want to say the quip. We want to. Okay. Eat dinner. And then we go to. We. We go out to the different events at night. We don't have to worry about that stuff. It's already done.
John Pajak
Right. And I mean, honestly, this. I feel less fatigued.
Mike Garvey
Like, yeah.
John Pajak
Like, okay, in Vegas here, the Con Expo is gigormous. Like we said, It's. It's ridiculously large. And, hey, we got a little tuckered out. You know, we hit. We hit all the milestones we needed.
Mike Garvey
Yep.
John Pajak
And then we were kind of tuckered out. We came back here, and everybody kind of just took a break. We didn't talk about it. We were like, hey, I'm gonna take a nap or whatever.
Mike Garvey
Whatever. Everyone. Yeah.
John Pajak
You know? You know, everybody kind of just had their little quiet time.
Mike Garvey
Yeah.
John Pajak
You know, Mike went out on the. You know, all I want to do
Mike Garvey
is sit in the sun. I haven't been in this. I know, like, months, and I'm like, all I want to do. I love my pool at home. I love, like, sitting by my pool. I love just being near water. Right. Being close to the beach. And I'm just like, I just want to just sit down and just like, I did. I don't have my phone.
John Pajak
Right.
Mike Garvey
My phone died. I was like, I need to leave my. And, like, you know, what takes. Take a little bit of that was the recharge I needed. I'm like, all right, let's go. Like, all right, everyone did their thing.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Mike Garvey
It's like I worked on your. Yeah.
John Pajak
Like, sat out there and I was like, oh, I'm going to work on this. I had a couple little lesson plans that I want to put together and, yeah. You know, jot some ideas down. I don't have to talk all the time, which is kind of rare, you know, But I'm like, Mike's going to take a little nappy nap.
Mike Garvey
Yeah.
John Pajak
Sit in the sun. I'm going to get some vitamin D, too. I'm going to sit there. And, you know, it was nice. It was just really nice. And then, you know, you get this opportunity to recharge and it's like, again, I feel I, you know, not to. This is. Don't live your life like this. Okay. Don't live where you're not getting enough sleep. I've talked about this ad nauseam. Take care of yourself. But I'm dumb. I'm a dumb human being. I will stay up way too late all the time. But anyway, this little recharge is nice. It's like, I don't feel, like, worn out. And I could imagine after multiple days, you know, like a lot of the. Some of these events that we go to, I really overextend myself. And it's.
Mike Garvey
Oh, quip was the. Probably I've been fatigued in my life by. By Friday night. I was like, I'm gonna need like three days of sleep.
John Pajak
You're like a zombie.
Mike Garvey
I was. I wasn't even listening to people talking right before. I'm like, my mind is like, it's fried.
John Pajak
Exactly. But, you know, things like this where, you know, pod house being. It's like immediate rest recovery for us. I know you're, like, listening and going, what? How does it benefit me? It's like, because you're going to be able to get, like, great greater content with us.
Mike Garvey
Yeah. And. And, you know, we're going to be able to have, you know, eight guests on it. Eight people talking. Or we could be sitting around the table with eight of us, you know, talking about what's going on. Right, Exactly. And you're getting more. More business where you wouldn't normally get that off a, you know, a zoom or a phone call interview or that type of. And we love these live events and we're. We're some of the best content and collaboration and ideas are born.
John Pajak
Yeah. And another thing is, too, is like, you know, this is. This is kind of like, you know, Mike, you've already said this a couple times to Me, I don't remember if it's been on air yet, but you know, this is the pilot. This is the first run. This is, you know, a good one. Yes, we did talk about it. My bad. Jesus. Sliding off the cracker again here, buddy. But the other thing is too, this is also a preview of all the audio visual things that profits with Paycheck is moving into. Right. So, you know, the streaming and the video content that's going to be coming and this is like the inspiration for it just to take things to the next level. You're going to be able to watch these as well as listen to them. So if you're, you know, if you still just love the podcast, well then you. It's still going to be there. We're not changing that, but we're going to be releasing more video, more live streams, not only on a regular basis, but especially when we're on site at an event. And then, you know, really, if you can't make it, hey, at least you'll feel like you're part of it.
Mike Garvey
Part of it, yeah. And you, you can see, watch the clips and the shorts and the everything, you know, then the people can, however they want to digest the content, they can.
John Pajak
And so this is kind of your notification that, you know, be looking very shortly here. Whiteboard Wednesdays. I'm gonna make it's reco. It's coming back. I've been getting my stuff in line. I had to test out my equipment. Cool. That's been in a private Facebook group, but now it's going to be on YouTube. It'll be distributed on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn. It's gonna, you know, we're gonna be going live once a week to talk about Whiteboard Wednesday. That way you can see the numbers as we're running them. You know, you'll see me writing stuff down in that way. Especially when it comes to numbers. You'll be able to visually see things and then from events, which is super helpful. Oh yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Because I mean, I could talk about numbers but man, it's. Sometimes it's hard to. Even when you're looking at it.
Mike Garvey
I have trouble even when I'm, when I'm seeing them in front of me.
John Pajak
Right.
Mike Garvey
I wasn't a great math student, but I tried my best.
John Pajak
But you know, especially things like, you know, for future events with Pot House, that's one of my goals is the profits of Paycheck Podcast bringing up the behind, not just the behind the scenes, but actually well produced content. And I only feel you can't do that from a hotel room, you know? And, you know, this is an environment where we could really make some magic happen. And I'm. I'm really thankful and excited to be part of this.
Mike Garvey
Awesome. Well, thank you for your support in it and also your mentorship, your guidance, and being such a great friend that you are.
John Pajak
Oh, thanks, Mike. It's my pleasure, man. It really is. But we're gonna. We're gonna kind of cap this one off. The boys are out there. I think they're gonna be coming back soon with some accoutrements for the. For the meal tonight.
Mike Garvey
Chef Larry.
John Pajak
Chef Larry made some broccoli this morning at 5:30am smelled up the whole house of the day. The whole house smells like burnt broccoli. But okay, we love them. We. We love them.
Mike Garvey
But thanks again, John.
John Pajak
