John Pajak
Welcome to Profit Smith Pajak, the podcast where we talk about business strategies and financial insights for the green industry. We're here today. We are at Pod Row. We are at the Lawn and Landscape Technology conference here in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. And I have Eric Prokop from Permagreen.
Eric Prokop
Hey guys.
John Pajak
Is sitting here with me today. We've got this wonderful, wonderful pothouse thing going here. This is, I might mic you guys up for that. That was really brilliant. Ok.
Eric Prokop
Okay.
John Pajak
We have Eric Triplett in the background. We're shooting some content for Pod House, which is just some good stuff for everyone involved. Absolutely. Shows you the little bit of the behind the scenes of, of what we do. And also it enables us to get a background and more insight to some of the companies that we work with.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
And Permagreen, you guys are very close to where I live. I'm in Sherville, Indiana. They are in Valparaiso.
Eric Prokop
That's right.
John Pajak
And Eric, tell us a little bit about your journey with Firmagreen.
Eric Prokop
Well, first of all, thank you for having me, John. I'm really excited to be here. It's a real treat for me to be around a bunch of like minded individuals that have the same goals that are trying to reach them together. It's a great place to network and meet great people and like yourself. It's just, it's really fun for me to be here. So I've been in the industry, you know, I've been saying I've been in the industry 20 years for a little too long. It's more like 23 years. Yeah, I'm a little long in the tooth. Yeah. But yeah, started out long ago as a helper, go to technician, route manager and eventually owner operator of a company and you know, recently sold it and you know, now I'm a consultant for Permagreen. But you know, during those 20 years, I've, I've ran the gambit on the equipment and I've pretty much ran it all. And you know, me personally, I always kind of felt that Permagreen for me was the most user friendly and proficient. And yeah, it's, it's kind of apropos that I work here now. I'm really excited to be here.
John Pajak
Your Eric, your journey is similar to mine in a sense. You know, I'm 25 plus years in this industry, which again, I understand that feeling of the long and the tooth and you're just kind of like, have I really been doing this for that long?
Eric Prokop
Oh my gosh. Yeah.
John Pajak
But you know, besides the working as a tech for other people, you know, cutting your teeth on learning this industry, but then also going out on your own and doing work for yourself, equipment is very important. You know, we can honestly, you could probably back me up on this. We could just use push behind spreaders and an assortment of backpack sprayers, hand cans, things like that and still make a beautiful lawn.
Eric Prokop
Oh yeah, 100%.
John Pajak
But I mean, I've done just about everything probably like you, where we've probably pulled hose, we've done that push spreader with the backpack sprays. And when you step into some ride on equipment, it is an entirely new world.
Eric Prokop
It's a game changer. It really is. You know, you started out, you know, 7:00am Pushing a spreader, pulling a hose, and by 7:15, you got the sweat towel and you're like, oh my gosh. And you're like, what am I doing? Almost like wondering if there's a light at the end of the tunnel. And then you get, you get to ride on a machine. And it's, it really changes the game. And you know, you really, you make more money, less physical stress on the body. And really that's, that's about the most important thing. When you can go home at the end of the day and you're not exhausted and you can, you know, still give your energy to your family. That's really important. That's what it all comes down to.
John Pajak
Exactly. You know, there's again, you know, just the savings in your, your energy, your energy levels. Just having enough power at the end of the day. Again, like days like Today, we're. It's 115 degrees in Arizona. Okay. It's. This is not.
Eric Prokop
Still getting used to it.
John Pajak
Yeah, this, this is not common. Okay. This is not a, you know, I'm from Northwest Indiana. You're, you're in Northwest Indiana. We don't deal with this type of heat. But when we are back home and like you said, you start pulling hose at 7 in the morning. At 7:15, you're already sweating.
Eric Prokop
You know, you got eight hours to go.
John Pajak
You still gotta go. Right. When you could get on a machine and still be fresh, even up to lunchtime where you don't feel stressed out, you know, you're getting the application done properly, you know that everything's gonna, you're getting the right product down in the right manner, but at the same time, you're still energized.
Eric Prokop
Absolutely. You know, and I believe the time is the biggest factor. You know, when I, when I was a technician and working hourly and being a realm manager, it's like you love that overtime. Right. But then when you start your own business, you realize the time is almost worth more than the money. You know, so when you can get a machine that saves you time and you can cut, cut the amount of time you're on a property in half or even more. Boy, that's a, it's a real game changer.
John Pajak
Absolutely. You know, like right now we got, you know, we have three crew. Well, two full time crews and a part time crew. And then sometimes I still go out, you know, I cherry pick the jobs I want to do. I guess I got my favorite lawns that I still do. And then I also take care of like some of the, the oddballs, they just, you know, it's like just for customer service. Sure. Satisfaction. And not only that, but some of these are very unique lawns. So like I'll out and do them. But the thing, but again, like when I'm. We're run a ride on Permagreen, we've had, you know, we had a 2017 model, a 2019 model, and I just, you know, again, I'm looking at all the updates that you guys have done.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
Now you have that autofill system that was brand new to me.
Eric Prokop
Oh, man. You know, two minutes, you got two full tanks and you're ready to go.
John Pajak
Right.
Eric Prokop
It's pretty amazing. You know, it takes you less time to fill the tanks than it does to drop a bag of fertilizer in the hopper, which is really nice.
John Pajak
Yeah. And again, because, well, I'm getting a little sidetracked ahead of myself. But you know, that autofill system is nice because like you said, you could just turn that on and it will stop. It will stop automatically.
Eric Prokop
Stop automatically. So you know, there's been times where customer comes up to your truck and you're talking and you get distracted and you know, it's just a nice reassurance to know that you're not going to overflow or lose any product. Because I've been there in the past where you, where you're running to your machine like oh, darn right.
John Pajak
You know, and then if it starts dripping, you know, like most the way we have it set up now, we have the racks on the back to where the machine is just sitting on the back before, you know, it was on an open trailer or something. And if you're letting everything fill up and run and it starts to overflow, that's a very bad. Yeah, not a good visual. You know, it's like we're supposed to be stewards of the environment and then all of a sudden it's like, oh, you just dumped like three gallons of herbicide, herbicide on the. What are you doing with your life? Oh no. You know, it's easy to get distracted but you know, little, little things like that, you know, like again, I had a system but it wasn't, it was an aftermarket product that I had to put on my permagreen. Actually they made it for other machines as well. But now that you guys are offering that, it's not. Instead of it just being the one Triumph model.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
You could do these add ons and stuff.
Eric Prokop
Oh, I know, it's like upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. And you know, yeah, some of those, some of those upgrades are just game changers. Just the two minute fill system, the never flat foam tires. Boy, I've been on properties with flat tires and it's never a good look, you know, and you're trying to resolve the situation, it's okay, time to push this 40 thou.
John Pajak
Yeah, exactly.
Eric Prokop
Never fun. But yeah, it's nice to have a little reassurance knowing the tires aren't going to go flat and excuse me, the two minute autofill system. But for me personally, you know, the game changer was those spray guns. It really was those spray guns because I came from a place where, you know, I would do 2530 applications a day and you know, you do perfect apps with a regular base model that just had the broadcast spray. But man, when you get back to your work truck, it's like, all right, grab that four gallon backpack, walk the perimeter. You know, that might take three, four minutes a property. You times that by 30, that's some time. Not to mention, you know, you throw four gallons on your shoulders 30 times a day. It takes it out of you a little bit. You don't want to do it much anymore.
John Pajak
Exactly. You know, you get. Again, these are all things like we're talking about the efficiency and you know, if you got happier techs and they're not as exhausted, you know, going back to like, hey, it's 7:00am and we're already sweating at 7:15. You know, if you're. When you're on a permagreen running that, it takes a lot of that manual labor. I mean, you're still working it. It's. It's a very nimble machine. But you know, you still have to maneuver it.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
But you're not exhausted.
Eric Prokop
You're not exhausted. You don't have to take a nap as soon as you get home.
John Pajak
Right.
Eric Prokop
You know.
John Pajak
You know, and again, like with the. I was bugging Tom and Brian and one of your predecessors before you like about having another spray tank in there.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
So finally, a couple like a year ago or so, you guys have the auxiliary tank on there, which is an option.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. That's pretty. That's really nice. Especially you know, if where I was, where I was from, there was a lot of nutsedge to have that secondary herbicide right there. It's just the convenience and an efficiency factor. And then, you know, if you don't need a secondary herbicide, it's always nice to just have a little more weed control. It's. It's beneficial.
John Pajak
Right. And you know, again, you are. It's not. I didn't have you on the show just because you're permagreen, but you're an applicator. And we've in with the show, we've had quite a few people that they want to. They know what I do for a living as beyond the podcasting and coaching and all the other fun things I do. But you know, they asked me a lot of questions about the chemicals and stuff.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
And one of the things that we are running right now and this is where like an auxiliary tank comes in handy. So instead of having to go back to the truck, you know, say you're running a permagreen and you have that auxiliary tank that you guys have bolted to the front of it. Now, you know, I would. We're using like a one gallon spray tank where it's, you know, Queen Clorox 75 DF mixed with Sedgehammer Plus. Sure. Because. And then we don't run any surfactant because the Sedgehammer plus has the surfactant in it already. And it's like we see the set, we, you know, if we see the sedges or the crab grass, it's like, oh, we should just hit it real,
Eric Prokop
real quick, you know? Yeah. I love it. And what, what's nice about that auxiliary tank too, even, you know, it comes with the spray gun. But even if, if you find an area where you need that secondary herbicide and it, it's just the spray gun just isn't going to cut it. You can also broadcast that.
John Pajak
Exactly.
Eric Prokop
That, you know, secondary herbicide at a 11 foot pass if you needed to.
John Pajak
Right. So it's not just, it's not in the spray, just in the spray gun, but it's also broadcast as well.
Podcast Host
It's.
John Pajak
Everything's plumbed in. So it's not just a, it's not like an afterthought. It's like you're finally, you know, putting all of this together into one cohesive triumph plus plus, you know? Sure. I mean, how long has the Triumph been around now?
Eric Prokop
The triumph, was it 12? I thought I was gonna say 2012 is when the Triumph came out, but yeah. Our president Tom, has been making machines since 1996. He's been manufacturing equipment since 1983. You know, he's been doing it a long time. He's got a lot of patents and you know, at the end of the day he really cares about the technician on the machine, you know, the boots on the ground. That's who he wants to help.
John Pajak
Exactly. I've talked to Tom quite a bit and you know, you could feel that from him.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, you know, he's passionate about it, you know, and he, he's still the first one there at 5am every day. And it's like, good gosh, you know. Yeah. I can learn a little something from him. You know, the work ethic that they, that these, you know, the older generation have.
John Pajak
Sure.
Eric Prokop
You know, Tom, he's a great guy.
John Pajak
Yeah. I mean, you can tell like he's passionate about it. It brings him happiness especially. And you know, when you tell him about certain things, he, he will come around to it eventually. Sure.
Eric Prokop
Right. You just gotta plant the seed.
John Pajak
You gotta plant the seed and then you just. Like with our industry where we're spraying and fertilizing you, we have to be patient as well as our clientele.
Eric Prokop
Absolutely.
John Pajak
And I don't know about you, but I could look at a lawn and people are like, I don't know, it's terrible. I'm like, I see the potential.
Eric Prokop
Oh yeah.
John Pajak
I'M like, it's. You know, by the end of the season, we're going to see. I know that we're going to hit these milestones. It's going to look better. Yeah, that could be perfect. Yeah.
Eric Prokop
I love those new customers that had those ugly lawns, and you're just like, wait and see.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
You know, I got a surprise for you.
John Pajak
I tell people, I'm like, you know, patience is a virtue. And I try to. I'm like, I'm a virtuous man because I'm very patient.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. The saying is patience is a virtue, but I've never waited long enough to find out. Right.
John Pajak
Yeah, it's. But, you know, again, like, you plant the seed with Tom, he comes around because a lot of these. I. Again, I'm not saying that it's because of me. I'm sure there's a huge demand for it, but, like, getting that auxiliary tank put on there was like. When I finally saw you guys doing that, I'm like, oh, thank you. You finally listen to me.
Eric Prokop
Right? Yeah.
John Pajak
You know, I've had the advantage, you know, the. I've. I've been able to work with you guys for a little while, just shooting, content with you and. Sure. And whatnot. Brian, who will have on the show later. But, you know, they. We. I'm. It's. It's easy to see me in the Permagreen videos because I'm wearing my work uniform.
Eric Prokop
Your bright orange. Yeah.
John Pajak
But the. The electric model. I know you brought one here to the show.
Eric Prokop
Very exciting.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
Oh, man, it makes me want to be a technician all over again. It really does. You know, I. I got on the machine. I mean, it's quiet as a mouse. All you. All you hear is the fertilizer hitting the propeller, and that's it. So realistically, if. If you need to get after it early in the morning, you could.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
You know, and that you're not bothering your customers.
John Pajak
And one of my technicians, Lynn, he's. He's using the Permagreen and he likes it. You know, he's. He's come. He worked for another company and they. They had like, the. The Magnums. They were the. Sure. They literally had like, a whole fleet of Magnums that are still out there. And if you don't know what. With Permagreen, they've had several models, but the Triumph is the current one.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
The Magnum. There's a whole subculture that's, like, literally
Eric Prokop
devoted to Die Hard, Magnum. F. Yeah, it really, you know, we've Kind of kicked the idea around with Tom about, hey, how about we, you know, have the Magnum option and have the Triumph option available? You know, that's, you know, that's neither here nor there right now, but.
John Pajak
Yeah, but the thing is, it's still out there.
Eric Prokop
It is.
John Pajak
And it kind of shows the, the longevity of these machines if you take care of them. And there's even unofficial, you know, guys that literally have created their entire business of remanufacturing these things and saving them so that. Because, like, the frames that you guys build are actually really good.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
Stainless steel construction, you have the, where it's necessary, you have the carbon steel for the strength.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
But everything, you know, it lasts a long time.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. I still know companies that are running Century.
John Pajak
I was just gonna bring up the Sentry model.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, you know, they just like, hey, I'll, I'll get a power washer engine and throw it on there. And they're, man, it's, it's just awesome to see some of the old models still out there. And honestly, you know, when I'm at work and, you know, I go out in the field during the day, it's, it's rare that I, I don't see a permagreen on a rack on the road. You know, during the seven to three period, you know, I'm. You see them everywhere.
John Pajak
Yeah, exactly. Back when I was getting my lawn care business off the ground, I was juggling routes, invoices, and customer notes with paper and prayers. It was chaos. Until I found Yardbook. Yardbook gave me the structure. It helped me track chemicals, route efficiently, invoice faster, and most importantly, it helped me grow a profitable business. John Pajak
They're just versatile machines. You know, obviously if you have, whether it's the rack that goes on the back.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
Which is nice because then you don't have to do a trailer or if you have, you know, like I've seen a lot of guys do ramp racks where, you know, obviously that's a specific product.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
But you know, they could put it in the bed of the truck or if it's not, it's in a trailer or on a trailer somewhere. You know, you see them all over.
Eric Prokop
It's still an efficient machine. But man, when you can put the rack, when you can combine the rack with the machine and you're not, you know, dragging a trailer around, trying to find parking, having to back that trailer up into a spot, it's just, you can just pull right up, you know, drop that gate, you're already on the parkway, ready to go. Just we try and think about those efficiencies that really make, you know, those small efficiencies that really make a difference in, you know, your daily operations.
John Pajak
Yeah, I get, when you get home, I know it's like we travel across country just to see each other, but it's like I should Bring in the, the one truck that we've got set up just for the Permagreen. It's super efficient. You know, we've got our 100 gallon nurse tank. Everything plugs in so it auto fills. We have it to where you know when you grab a bag of fertilizer, you're not stretching because I have like a little extendable thing that pulls the material closer to you.
Eric Prokop
Yes sir.
John Pajak
So it's like we could actually have an entire pallet that will slide to you.
Eric Prokop
Oh, that's awesome.
John Pajak
You know, obviously the machine has to be off of the, the trailer off of the right rack but in order for the, the tailgate to go down. But this will extend out so you don't have to climb in the back and everything. You would have loved to work for me.
Eric Prokop
I'm sure I would have. Yeah. You know, learning about some of these. Yeah, it's you know, putting the tool in the right spot and having your fertilizer in an easy to grabs. You know, it's little things like that. I, I read a book once called Lean Manufacturing and it was just, you know, putting everything in the right spot. So you have to do less. It's all right there for you.
John Pajak
Exactly.
Eric Prokop
I love it. I love it. And that's kind of how permagreen operates too, you know.
John Pajak
Yeah. The Six Sigma was one of the. Long ago. You know, it's like the lean manufacturing thing. The Toyota was a huge influence. But you know I, with my company, I don't really talk about it that much but with our trailer design, with our shop design, with every. Even the trucks themselves, we. I try to minimize the amount of movement is that's required for a technician to get what they need.
Eric Prokop
Yes sir. And it's all about less stress on the body. Right?
John Pajak
Exactly. And you know that kind of walks right into. And I know I'm. You know we're talking about permagreen. The layout of the controls on every permagreen.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
Is so once you get, once you get the hang of it, it's so intuitive.
Eric Prokop
It really is. You know, it might. It may take you a couple hours a day to get used to that machine but man, within a week it's like riding a bicycle. You're just. You're off and going making money.
John Pajak
Exactly.
Eric Prokop
You know, it's really exciting.
John Pajak
It's you know, because it's like, okay, one handed. I can still control all the technicians. Once they learn it, they're like, yeah, I like this. You know.
Eric Prokop
Right. Lock things in place.
John Pajak
Exactly.
Eric Prokop
You know, it's really nice.
John Pajak
You know, you do, you know, you have your brakes, you know, it's like, it's like a, a motorcycle in a way or squad.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
And you could, you know, you got front and rear brakes.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
But then you have your throttle on the one side and then the other. That's where you control your spray on.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, we control. Exactly.
John Pajak
And then in the middle, you know, you have your, your, your valves for your wide, your, your narrow for the auxiliary tank.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
All those things are right there. You can still do this all one handed while you're still rolling.
Eric Prokop
That's correct.
John Pajak
I use the thumbs, the thumb levers to turn my granular on. All at the same time.
Eric Prokop
Exactly.
John Pajak
And then if I need to throw the, the side shield up.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. Make that guard.
John Pajak
You make that guard go up. And at the same time I could. Because of the new improvements with. Do you remember the old like plastic lever?
Eric Prokop
Oh, yes.
John Pajak
Well, you know, that got improved years and years ago, but I could pull both of those at the same time so that I'm redo. I'm closing my third hole.
Eric Prokop
Exactly.
John Pajak
And for those of you that are like, what the hell are you talking about? It's just, I'm putting into reference like everything laid out on those permagreens. It's so intuitive. You could do it with either hand and then you could just throw all these things. And that's why it's like all the, all the controls are easy.
Eric Prokop
Absolutely. It's like you can control everything without taking your hands off the handlebars. Which is, it's, it's phenomenal.
John Pajak
The only. Well, the only thing I think that you have to take your hand off for is the. Unless you guys did something different. But with the, the side shield, I think that's the only one that you really have to take your head off that.
Eric Prokop
That's true.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
The deflector.
John Pajak
The deflector.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
But other than that, everything you could still do with your hands on both grips, which are comfortable.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
I put. I don't know about you, but I like putting the mushroom grips. The. Oh, they remember we used to call them mushroom grips when we were.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
The bike grips.
Eric Prokop
I was just gonna say the bmx. Yeah, yeah.
John Pajak
It's like those were the cool ones. So it's like when we tear them up because, you know, if that stuff just wears out, eventually it's like I go and I get those. The new ones, the, you know, and I just slide them on and just, you know, that's awesome. It's just fun.
Eric Prokop
Give it a new look.
John Pajak
Give it a new look. You know, my guy Lynn, he likes red. I get him a set of red mushroom grips, and he's like, that's my machine. I'm like, yeah, that is your machine.
Eric Prokop
That's outstanding.
John Pajak
He's like that. I'm like, you're the only one that's going to use it. That's yours.
Eric Prokop
You know, and then technicians grow to love them. And then, you know, a lot of times, you know, technicians will be employed and they'll ride machines, permagreens for five, six years. And then, you know what? I love this machine so much. I'm going to, I'm going to do this on my own. And they ended up purchasing permagreens. And we love that just as much. You know, we, we love the. I love everybody in this industry. I really do. You know, I, I admire the, the billion dollar companies that started from scratch, but I also, you know, I admire that young man who's got a bicycle and he's got a push mower tied to the back of it and he's getting after it. I, I love this industry, man. And everybody's here to support each other. I really love it. It's exciting.
John Pajak
It's kind of unusual. You know, we have, I think we have a. Our, Our service industry is kind of unique in certain ways because, you know, you, you compare it to other trades where you got like plumbers and H vac and all these. Not that they don't get along, but they're. A lot of these companies are really competitive, so. Competitive to where they're willing to, you know, cut some tires, you know.
Eric Prokop
Exactly. Yeah. Throw somebody under the bus or whatever the case may be. And. Yeah, you know, at least the people that I've met in this industry, whether it's local or national, they've all just been super supportive. And, you know, as much as I do, this industry is massive. Yes. But at the heart of it, there's still like a community where you see people. Oh, I saw you in Nashville three months ago. How you doing? How's things going? Can I help you with anything? It's like I've seen people that I've seen in five or six different states, and you just, you, you build relationships with people.
John Pajak
Right.
Eric Prokop
That's exciting, man. That's really exciting for me to, you know, network and just meet great people in this industry. They're all over the place.
John Pajak
Exactly. I mean, it's, it really is like a special community in a sense. I Mean, don't get me wrong, there's going to be, I mean back home there's a company that I'm totally fine with. I call most of my guys friend Petitors. You know, I'm friendly with them but they're competitors and I'm like, hey, I'll still help you out. Matter of fact, I had a guy call me this morning, he's like, I think I need a subcontract some work out to you. Can you handle it? I'm like, yeah, we could probably take care of you.
Eric Prokop
That's awesome.
John Pajak
Because he's just overwhelmed with his landscape division and he is just like, I'm falling behind.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
I'm like, of course I could help you out.
Eric Prokop
You know, when I own my own business. I had a friend who did something similar. He started a business at the same time I did and you know, we were running neck and neck for five years and our, our model was, hey man, there's plenty of fish in the sea.
Podcast Host
Oh yeah.
Eric Prokop
Do you need something? Let me help you out. You. And that's exciting. I just, I really appreciate that part of this business is people caring about you. You know, it's exciting. And that, that brings me to my next point. It's, you know, a lot of these companies when I was a, when I was a technician or an owner operator, that was one of my sayings. I would tell my customers, you know, a lot of these companies were using a lot of the same product, right? So it's not what you're putting down, it's who's the one that's putting it down that's going to make the difference for you.
John Pajak
Y.
Eric Prokop
You know, customers love hearing that and you get personal and you, you build relationships and you care about that property and it's nice to see, you know, the results of your work, you know, from round one to rounds two, three and four or five where you just. Round one, it's a dead property. Or not dead, but dormant. It's a dormant property, you know, and then, you know, six months later you're like, gosh, this thing is beautiful. I love two months later. It's beautiful. You know, it's just, it's exciting to see your work and I'm, you know, I'm really happy to be here, you know, teaching the next generation of technicians.
John Pajak
Yeah, isn't that feel weird, man? Like, it's like, don't get me wrong, I, I'm still going, what am I going to do when I grow up? You know,
Eric Prokop
I hear you.
John Pajak
I know I'm a 70s kid, so it's kind of like, oh man. Like, am I okay? I guess I gotta grow up sometime. The thing is, we just have so much fun doing some of these things, you know, it's like again, when I get on, like if I'm. If. When my permagreens are dialed in, it's so nice. It's so effortless, you know?
Eric Prokop
Absolutely. When they're, when they're running. Right. Which is almost all the time, you know. Yeah. They're. They're just a profitable machine. And. Yeah. Love using them and they're just fun to ride, really. You know.
John Pajak
Oh, my daughter, you know, she's always. When we had a mowing division, you know, she was the one that I could, you know, I showed her how to ride everything. And we used stand on units to. When we had the mowing.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
And she would surprise the guys that would. When she would go to the dealership with me and she'd jump up on it. I'm like, oh, yeah, pull the key out of that for me. And they're like, she can't start it. It's got the safety. She knows how to buy me. She knows how to do the safeties.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, she knows how to do it.
John Pajak
She knows how to do it.
Eric Prokop
She's.
John Pajak
Matter of fact, it was the funniest thing, Eric.
Podcast Host
I.
John Pajak
When we had. I used to have quite a. I had like six guys that were on the mowing crew. And the funny thing was I had her, I had my daughter Claire show them how to start all of our equipment. That's awesome. Because one guy got on, he's like, this is a piece of junk. It doesn't work. And he just didn't have the parking breaking right.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
And she walked over there and she's like. And she's. She was like six or seven years old and she's like, she pulls it and she pulls the brake on and then all of a sudden she's like. Turns the key and she's like looking at me and I'm like, she's six years old, she could start it, bud.
Eric Prokop
There's a six year old telling a man, hey, there's a standard operating procedure. Let's figure it out. Okay. That's funny.
John Pajak
And then again, you know, with. As she's gotten older now, occasionally at our storage unit place, you know, she wants to ride everything around. And I'm like, you could take. We just cleaned the machine. Go ahead and drive it around so it dries out. Yeah, you know.
Eric Prokop
Exactly.
John Pajak
So she'll she'll jump on the, the permagreen and she'll just fly around. And, you know, I know that you guys have electric starts on some of these.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
As an option.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. We got the turnkey electric starts. You know, we have the, the manual pull starts, which are great machines in themselves, but.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
You know, you do 30 applications a day. You start that machine 30 times. It's just kind of nice to have that turn key option where you're not, you know, give your shoulder a break
John Pajak
every once in a while and then if the battery dies, well, then you can still pull it.
Eric Prokop
Exactly. It's a fail safe. Yeah, yeah, it's very nice.
John Pajak
But, you know, she's still. The ones we have still have pull starts on them, but it's just, she's 12 now, you know, and she could still operate this thing.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, she's a future technician, manager, owner, operator.
John Pajak
Right. She has no interest in this. She just likes. She's like me.
Eric Prokop
She.
John Pajak
We like the equipment and the tools. Sure thing. But the thing is, it's like again, show it. I think that's a testament to how it's a simple machine, but it could do a lot of complicated things as well.
Eric Prokop
Oh, yeah, yeah.
John Pajak
You know, and it's, it's a good thing. I mean, it's. I, I've, you know, for those that are listening, I have tracked how much money those machines make us in a day. Okay. Now, on average, you know, eric, you said 25 to 30 a day.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
That's kind of like what we were doing too. We were, we're doing. I kind of give my guys a bit of a. A buffer in a sense. Yeah. I'm. They do. I got one guy, his name's Greg, he does 30 and he wants more.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
Okay. But I'm like, no, let's. We, we gotta pace it here, bud.
Eric Prokop
Gotcha.
John Pajak
I, I don't want to, I don't want to count on production being 30 plus a day.
Eric Prokop
Right. No, I, I completely understand.
John Pajak
You know, quality control is huge in our business and everything. But, you know, anyway, going back to, you know, 20, 25 a day for us. I mean, each machine can produce depending on what application we're on. I mean, you're, we're talking if our average ticket. Let's just say it's a hundred dollars because that's a very close to our average ticket.
Eric Prokop
Okay.
John Pajak
You're doing 25 a day.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
That's 2, $500 per machine. 10. Even if you do 10, which that's light work.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
We get that done by 10 o', clock, 7 o' clock to 10 o'. Clock.
Eric Prokop
So it's been a bit, it's been a little bit of time since I've bought in some fertilizer. I know things have gone up, but when I was buying fertilizer, 17 to $21 a bag. So if you use, you know, 10, 15, 10 bags of fertilizer, you know, was it 170 bucks in product, you know, your gas, maybe $100 in gas for the day. 300, 270. 300 bucks. And then, yeah, you're making 2500, $3,000 a day. It makes sense, doesn't it?
John Pajak
Yeah. Because, you know, a lot of, I think a lot of times when people start looking at write ons, especially when it comes to fertilizer equipment, it's much higher than like say a mower. And people look at it and go, look at the permanent. It's small. And you know, I'm not sure what the retail is on these right now, but they're just like, oh, sticker shock. But I'm like, look at the production. You could get done with these things.
Eric Prokop
100. I'm glad you mentioned the, what the retail value is right now. So we are at the lawn and landscape Technology Expo and because of that we are running 30, 30% off our machines right now for till July 31st. You know, in honor of our nation's birthday, you know, we're running till July 31, 30% off a machine. You can get a base model Permagreen, which I ran for 12 years and did perfect applications. A base model for right around 9200 bucks.
John Pajak
Yeah. Oh man.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. See that's, that's really insane. When my boss told me those prices, I was like, are you sure? Ok, go. And man, we've gotten a lot of traction and you know, and not to mention that we are now. Permagreen is now selling direct to the customers. You know, we used to sell through dealers, site one Ewing Irrigation and stuff. And now we've, you know, you can still purchase the machine through one of those dealers, but if you buy direct, we're going to save you a boatload of money. So now instead of those dealer markups, we're passing those savings directly to the customer.
John Pajak
That's awesome. Yeah, that's, I mean, okay, that's like going 10 years back, it really is. You know, I believe for my 20s or for my 2017, that's about the price out the door after tax and everything that I Bought it for.
Eric Prokop
Yep.
John Pajak
And we've had quite a bit of inflation.
Eric Prokop
We all know how prices have gone up.
John Pajak
Yeah. So being able to buy a base model permagreen for around that amount of money, I mean, that's amazing.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. You know, I. Dude, I know guys that have bought base model permagreens and. And carrier rack for like, 10, five all together. And you're like, wow, dude, you're all set, Ready to go.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
And, yeah, sometimes I kind of shake my head at these prices, but, you know, my boss.
John Pajak
That's great.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
That again, we profits with paycheck. We talk about how to make your business more profitable. If you could save money on that, I definitely encourage you. Go to permagreen.com and absolutely check everything out.
Eric Prokop
Check out permagreen.com. you know, you can actually fill in a quote. You can get a quote online. If you get one in by July 31, you get that 30% off discount. And, yeah, we were happy to help. And then that quote will go for 30 days. So if you get a quote in by July 31, you can actually pay that same price until the end of August.
John Pajak
Awesome. Yes, sir. So we're gonna have to get this out there.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
I would love to say, hey, you know, use profit. You know, use program promo code, paycheck, and I'm gonna get you the 30 off. But permagreen is doing this on their own because of the, you know, America's 250.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
250th birthday here.
Eric Prokop
But, you know, and I've. I've been with Permagreen close to two years. Brian's been there for, you know, considerable time, longer. And during that time, we have never seen this type of discount. This 30 time just was like, you know, it's our 250th anniversary. Let's give them something big.
John Pajak
That's huge. That's huge. And the thing is, like, again, we're talking, you know, like, with my business, we're Talking Productions between 2,000, $2,500 a day, sometimes 3,000, depending if we're doing grub control, because that's.
Eric Prokop
Oh, gosh. Grub control. You make a lot of money.
John Pajak
Yeah. You know, it's. And, you know, you start to put that in perspective, even if you're a solo operator. That's a. A very good. You know, that's a good day.
Eric Prokop
Oh, yes. Yeah, Very much so.
John Pajak
You know, you start multiplying it. You know, like, we got three. Three trucks running. Hey, if. Even if it's 2000. That's 6000 in production a day.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
You know, those machines, you could pay them off very quickly.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, the ROI, you know, on a $9,200 machine, just like you were saying, you got two, three trucks out, you know, six grand a day, it's not going to take long to make your money back and then some.
John Pajak
Exactly.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
John Pajak
And you know, a lot of times, you know, if you've been following the show for any amount of time, some pieces of equipment, I say do it in one year. Some, you want to get your ROI within three years or five years. It's like I'm a 1, 3, 5. It's kind of an odd, the odd numbers kind of stick out. But you know, if you plan, if you budget permagreens and other write on machines that we use. In my company, we kind of have the Swiss army knife approach to where different things require different machines in a sense. But you know, we look at it and go, you know, these, we're going to get the ROI in three years. But honestly, when I look at our numbers and I'm going through it, we're getting our roi usually in the first year with.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, it's much sooner than that. Usually, you know, you got the, the clientele. Well, yeah, you're gonna make your money back real quick.
John Pajak
Exactly. You know, and again, that's another thing too. We gotta also talk about, you know, maybe we could talk about it real quick. Just like.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
Where do you feel the, the tipping point is? Where you going from like say a push spreader and backpack sprayers to treat a lawn to like the volume of. How many do you need to really start benefiting from, from a ride on piece?
Eric Prokop
You know, that's a good question.
Podcast Host
I,
Eric Prokop
I would, I would put it in the, you know, if you have 100 customers, I would get the permagreen. I really would. Because you're, you're going to finish those properties quick and then that gives you more time to pass flyers.
John Pajak
Yeah.
Eric Prokop
Do everything else. I, I have a friend who runs Permagreens, a company called the Green Standard. And he's got three, three children. I think he's got about maybe like 200, 250 customers. And he, he, he provides for his three children. He's got a, you know, and he's a solo operator with a permagreen with 250 customers. And it's enough to provide for three children and his wife. And it's like, dude, he's getting after it. You know, you don't need much. But, yeah, the. You know, I would say anything over 75 to 100, you really should start considering getting that equipment. That's going to make your job easier.
John Pajak
Exactly. I. I was. I was gonna say. But, you know, like, I think the first one that we got was once we started having. I wasn't even talking about accounts. I think I based it off of the square footage that we were doing. And I would agree, if it's residential lawns, like, I might even go as low as 50.
Eric Prokop
There you go.
John Pajak
Because then it starts making more sense, you know, again, you get more time, more tight, you know, because if we could. If you got 50 clients and you could get them done quickly, like you said, we could pass out flyers, we could pass out. We could write some stuff down and send them a postcard or a, you know, some sort of notification.
Eric Prokop
It goes back to when you own your own business. It's. But sometimes the time is more valuable than the money.
John Pajak
Oh, can I buy time? Can you buy time?
Eric Prokop
Yeah, I wish I could. I really wish I could.
John Pajak
Time.
Podcast Host
We.
John Pajak
You know that when people say time is money, that is. I'm like, I wish it was because then I could have as much as I want.
Eric Prokop
Yeah. How about it?
John Pajak
You know, you and I were sitting there going, we're 23, 24, 25 years in this business, and we're like, we don't feel like it. It's like, we can't buy that back or, you know.
Eric Prokop
No, I know.
John Pajak
It's. It's.
Eric Prokop
It's. It's scary. What is it? The days are long and the years are short, my friend.
John Pajak
Exactly. But, you know, again, I've owned Permagreens since 2017. Actually, 2016. I bought it right at the end of 2016. I bought the 2017 model when it came out.
Eric Prokop
There you go.
John Pajak
So it's like, even though that machine was built at the very end of 16, it was a 17 model.
Eric Prokop
Gotcha.
John Pajak
And, you know, I purchased those ahead of 2017 and 2019, and I've been kind of sticking in those, just that. That year of style, because they, you know, they'll last.
Eric Prokop
Sure.
John Pajak
Unfortunately, you know, I'm not buying a new one every single year.
Eric Prokop
We'll get you there.
John Pajak
Yeah. But at the same time, it's like, once you make that investment, it's going to stick around for a long time.
Eric Prokop
Oh, yeah.
John Pajak
You know, and the fact. Oh, go ahead.
Eric Prokop
Oh, it's just like. But, you know, once you made that first purchase, how long was it until you're like, Imagine if I got two of these.
John Pajak
Oh, yeah.
Eric Prokop
You know.
John Pajak
Yeah, exactly. It's like, you know, at this point we're running, you know, it's again like we're the model of, you know, one is none, two is one, one is none.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
Honestly, you get to a point where it is going to be beneficial to have. You don't have to have one for each. A backup for each machine.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
But it wouldn't. I haven't gotten rid of that 2017 because I clean it. You know, it's, it's a good clean machine and then it doesn't always see the light of day every day. But if the 2019 or the other machine that we have goes, you know, it's needs some service.
Eric Prokop
Right.
John Pajak
Oh, there we go. We got the backup right there.
Eric Prokop
Exactly.
John Pajak
And it's not costing me a ton of money.
Eric Prokop
Right. You know, it's your most reliable employee.
John Pajak
Yeah. It fires up even when so. Well, not now. I can't talk about my guys now. They're wonderful.
Eric Prokop
There you go.
John Pajak
I've got some gems of, you know, Lynn and Greg and Brian. If you guys are listening right now, I thank you so much for all the hard work that you do. I try to make it as easy as I can for you when it comes to production. That's why I invest in machines like Permagreen and all the other toys that you guys get to play with.
Eric Prokop
Hey, yeah, that, that's probably the coolest part about our job is all the toys, right? Exactly. Coming here and seeing something new, you're like, oh, I wonder if my wife will let me buy that.
John Pajak
Yeah, exactly. But again, I highly suggest that you guys go to permagreen.com, check out the machines and the add ons that are available right now.
Eric Prokop
Absolutely.
John Pajak
And like, Eric, just, you know, again,
Eric Prokop

Eric Prokop
And real quick, John, before I let you go, let me tell you a story of how I got the job at.
John Pajak
Yeah, let's hear that.
Eric Prokop
So, you know, during. During your winters, you have a little bit of downtime. So a couple winters ago, I. I called Permagreen and I'm like, hey, this may be a little unusual, but I'm kind of a turf nerd and a bit of a lawn care geek. Do you guys have, like, tours of your sales floor or your assembly line? And they're like, no, we. We don't normally do tours of our assembly line. But. But you said you had 20 years experience. Why don't you send me your resume? Couple weeks later, I was working at Permagreen.
John Pajak
That's awesome.
Eric Prokop
Yeah, I honestly, you know, I. At the time, I had, you know, I wasn't even looking for employment, you know, but it just, you know, the right time, right place and. Yeah, and now I'm. I'm loving it. And I've been here two years, and it. It feels like two weeks. I just. I love it here. And, you know, just now, you know, from being a helper technician, route manager, owner, operator, and now I'm a sales consultant for Permagreen. I literally get to travel all over the country. I've even been to Canada just to talk lawn care. And it's. It's a real treat for me.
John Pajak
Me. It's amazing where this. This. This whole industry could take you, isn't it?
Eric Prokop
It's exciting. Yeah, I love it. And, you know, just meeting you, this is a real treat for me.
Podcast Host
Excellent.
John Pajak
Thank you.
Eric Prokop
Yeah.
John Pajak
Well, that about wraps it up for today. Again, check out permagreen.com. i've got all the contact info in the show notes. And as always, God bless. Keep pushing through and we'll catch you on the next one.
