Mike Wilbon
Pardon the interruption, but I'm Mike Wilbon. You started yesterday's show, Tony, with a good limerick. Can you top it today?
Tony Kornheiser
I'm Tony Kornheiser and I'll try. There once was a GM so daft, dealt his star and gave fans the shaft. Some said he'd get fired, but last night he acquired the number one pick in the draft. How's that?
Mike Wilbon
That's good. That's pretty good. I think that's. Yeah, that's even better than the Pope one. It's not the Pope. Although in Dallas they would say it's more important than the Pope, but, you know.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, maybe in Dallas, but not the rest of the world. Boys and girls, in today's episode, the Mavs win the draft lottery. The Timberwolves beat the warriors again and baseball reinstates Pete Rose. But we begin today with the Boston Celtics again blowing a double digit second half lead and losing to the Knicks last night to fall behind 31 in their series. Potentially worse for the Celtics was their best player, Jayson Tatum, going down in the fourth quarter with what might be an Achilles tear. Wilbon, you were there. What did last night mean for this series and for the Celtics future?
Mike Wilbon
Tony, it was monumental and certainly in a way that we didn't want to see, sitting there watching Jayson Tatum writhing like that and the pain on his face and in his voice and it was just awful. And there's so many players, Tony, as you and I have noted. We talked about some of them, you know, a lot of them, there's so many of them, former players sitting courtside, they feel they instantly knew. Some of them have had Achilles tears. Many of them had serious knee injuries, ankle injuries. And afterward they just all sat around very quietly and you would say, what do you think happened? They're like, I know what happened. And we have not gotten official word on that yet from the Boston Celtics. But it just feels, you know, doom for right now for Jayson Tatum, who's only 27 years old. And people come back from these injuries. They do. They really come back and have all star seasons. Kevin Durant. They do. But for now with the Celtics, what does it mean? They're down 31 without their best player. And if you, if you have a, A one, a, you know, in Jaylen Brown, they're still missing a guy who had 42 points last night in three and a half quarters. He's a great, great, great, great player. First team all star on my ballot. And so now you lose him from the series. The Knicks get one More game at home if they can't close it tomorrow night in Boston. And then you start to wonder if they're eliminated the Celtics, what, what happens to the Celtics going forward with a half billion dollar roster and they become big picture questions. But for now with the series, Tony, the Knicks are in control at 3:1.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, let me be very clear about this. If Jayson Tatum can't play, this series is over. The Celtics cannot and will not beat the Knicks three in a row. But let me be also clear about this. When Jayson Tatum went out last night, the Knicks were ahead. The Celtics were not ahead. The Celtics were in the process of blowing, having blown a 14 point lead that they had in the third quarter. That play where he got hurt, that play finishes with Og Anunoby flushing a dunk right. And then is a nine point lead with three minutes to go. I don't believe the Celtics with Jayson Tatum are going to win that game. He had 42 and they were down nine. So I mean that is my reasoning. I mean I was dead wrong on this game. As you know, I thought the Celtics would win game four like they had won game three. And let me just say this for the. They're the defending champions in the league. Four times they've had sizable leads in the second half and three times they have lost those games. Mike, I'm, I'm. They missed 17 of their last 21 threes. I'm sorry, is anyone coaching this team? Does anyone look at tape on this team did. This is not excusable. It's not.
Mike Wilbon
Well, Tony, I tell you all the time this is what they believe in. And so you say, you and I have both said, is there a plan B? They're not looking for a plan B. This is what they're going to do. And they kept throwing them up. And at one point I thought they missed six in a row when the Knicks were making up that deficit, going from minus 14 to plus 9. That's a 23 point swing. And you know this is. And they're going to play like that tomorrow night. They are. This is what, this is what they want to do, what they believe in. And they, you know what? It seems like they can go out believing in it too. It really does. Let's move to the stunning outcome of last night's NBA draft lottery. The Dallas Mavericks won the top pick in the draft despite having just a 1.8% chance of doing so. So after your boy Tony GM Nico Harrison gets months of criticism from for dealing Luka Doncic he lucks in the Cooper flag. Tony, what does this result mean for the Mavericks and for the entire NBA?
Tony Kornheiser
Well, the first thing it tells us is that Nico Harrison has saved his job. He makes what I think is one of the more terrible trades in the history of the NBA a while back, two, three months ago, and now he's sitting on a bed of roses. Mike, you and I have talked about this. I am not a conspiracist, but if I were a conspiracist, I would sketch it out pretty much like this. I want to just consult my notes on this. Nico Harrison makes a completely insane trade. The reaction, getting rid of Luka Doncic, the reaction in Dallas among the fans is anger. Just terrible anger. An eruption of anger. Then you hear that the owners aren't even crazy about staying in Dallas. They might want to go to Las Vegas. The team collapses because of injuries and other things. They end up in the play in game, they lose in the play in game, and then they end up in the lottery. So then the league says, hey, we gotta fix this. Dallas is a really important franchise, and they rigged the lottery so that the team with a 1.8 chance of winning it actually wins it. And they get Cooper Flagg. And as you and I both have talked about, Cooper Flagg will be more popular than Luka Doncic, even in Dallas. And when you put him next to Anthony Davis, there are going to be times when you're going to say to yourself, wow, this feels like Bird and mchale. And then they're going to get Kyrie Irving back, who is a championship guard. He has a ring as a point guard. So now Dallas is fixed. Dallas is thriving. Nobody's going to talk about Las Vegas. And the only thing that could screw it up is if Nico Harrison trades the number one pick. That's the only thing.
Mike Wilbon
And now I'm not.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Mike Wilbon
So you and I, we have, we talked about this for weeks, giggling like two little schoolboys saying, if I was ever gonna fix something, it'd be this one.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Mike Wilbon
And you and I had it narrowed down to, like San Antonio, Dallas, Philly. And we both were okay with Chicago and Washington, but we were centered on Dallas, Philly and San Antonio. Boom. It's Dallas, Tony. And there's other factors. There's so many factors. There's so much intrigue goes on forever. There's. The plot thickens. Because if you're the Milwaukee Bucks and you're going to trade Giannis Anto, and you are, you're calling the Dallas Mavericks to say you want to win? You want to win next year? How about giving us Mr. Cooper flag? How about that? Because that's a more attractive offer than even the 2 and the 14 coming back from San Antonio for Giannis. So, Tony, we're going to hear about this. You know, I was told today by somebody who should know that the Mavericks won't do that. And this owner has seen what the seething anger has done to his. Don't want his business. And that's what billionaires pay attention to. And there are all sorts of things you and I got into on the phone, and we'll have time to get into it later. There are implications of culture and race and all sorts of things involved with. With this acquisition, this pick, the reaction, the perception, my God, they're gonna be. We won't be able to get away from it, nor will we, because it's irresistible, but. Wow.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, that's right. Again, I'm not a conspiracist, but I do believe in the frozen envelope, and I would do it exactly this way. Let's move to baseball's decision to remove 16 deceased players from its permanently ineligible list. The headliner is Pete Rose, who passed away last September. Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement that, quote, obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game, unquote. Manfred said he felt like a lifetime ban was enough. Rose and the others are now eligible for hall of Fame consideration. Wilmot, how do you feel about Manfred's decision and his reasoning?
Mike Wilbon
Tony, so far, the news is relatively new to us. I'm just numb to it. I don't. I find myself just not giving a damn. And it's like, Pete Rose is dead. He's dead. And Pete Rose, who was so outspoken and a guy that you and I, you covered more than I did. I did?
Tony Kornheiser
Really?
Mike Wilbon
More than managing and retiring. Fascinating, often crude character who we always loved talking to. Always. And we can't even get a reaction from Pete Rose. Cause once again, Pete Rose is dead. Shoeless Joe has been dead almost 75 years. I don't know how long. Eddie C. Cott. Now I'm going back to the 1919 White Sox. Cause that sort of resonates with the kid from the south side of Chicago. But, Tony, they're dead. Like what? Like what? What's the hot take that we're supposed to have about this now?
Tony Kornheiser
So let me. Let me consult my notes. Cuz like you, I just found out about this literally minutes ago. Okay, so Pete Rose and Joe Jackson shoeless Joe Jackson are now eligible for the hall of Fame. But Rob Manfred does not put you in the hall of Fame. The baseball writers who are members put you in the hall of Fame. Those baseball writers, as we know well, are guardians of the game. They take violations very seriously. Joe Jackson fixed games, okay? Pete Rose bet on games. As a manager of one team, that doesn't go away. You know who else is eligible for the hall of Fame right now? Barry Bonds is eligible. Mark McGuire is eligible. Sammy Sosa, Roger, they're eligible. Are they getting in anytime soon? Doesn't look that way from the voting. As you know, Mike, I would put Pete Rose in Hall of Fame. I would put his sins on the plaque and his accomplishments on the plaque. I agree that when your life is gone, it's okay to be eligible for something. But I do not see Pete Rose and as a first ballot hall of Famer, I just don't. I don't think it's going to happen.
Mike Wilbon
Because the writers career merited that. But yes, everything that's absent subsequently says this. But I just like, okay, he's dead. Why should I care? Why am I supposed to care now about dead guy Joe Jackson? Really? I'm supposed to care? Long time ago, died in 1950.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't think they'll get in.
Mike Wilbon
You don't think they'll get in either.
Tony Kornheiser
Let's take a break.
Mike Wilbon
The voters.
Tony Kornheiser
The voters are tough. No, they're tough. Let's take a break. Coming up, the Timberwolves beat the warriors again. Is Anthony Edwards or Steph Curry the bigger story in this series?
Mike Wilbon
And are the Pacers or the Nuggets more likely to win on the road tonight?
Tony Kornheiser
Mike, I'm gonna go back to the lottery for a second. I'm going back to the lottery. The Wizards tanked. The furthest they could fall was sixth. They fell to sixth. That's karma. They cheated the people who bought tickets. Utah, but they're not Utah as well.
Mike Wilbon
Tanks get in the zone. Autozone.
C

Tony Kornheiser
Time for toss up. Two men enter, one man leaves, finishes the show and settles in to Watch the biggest sports story of the night, whether the Nationals will snap their six game losing streak. Yeah. What's first?
Mike Wilbon
Toss up. Who deserves to be the bigger story in the Wolves warriors series, Anthony Edwards or Steph Curry?
Tony Kornheiser
Just for the record, I watched last night when they got walked off by the Braves. Okay, this question is easy. The answer is Steph Curry. He's hurt, he's out, and they can't win without him. Anthony Edwards having a nice series, getting better as the series goes on. Mike, I think he had 23 and 20 in the first two games and then 36 and 30 in the next two games. That's nice, but he's not the story. Steph Curry is the story because they can't win without Steph Curry. And last night, the savior, your boy Jimmy Butler took nine shots and had a minus 30 at home. When you're the best player on the team, you got to have more production than nine shots and 14 points. You have to.
Mike Wilbon
Yeah, agreed. I mean, Steph Curry is a huge story anytime he's out there, because it's Steph Curry. If they open the gates and you come in, people still go to see Steph Curry, number one draw jersey, him shooting warmups. You could charge just a warm up fee in every arena in the league to see Steph Curry until the anthem begins. And you got to get out. And people would pay that. But Ant man, Tony, he's starting to be what a lot of us thought last year. He was on the way to being. It takes a little while. All right? And so he, he has shots. And by the way, the admission after the game that he, he worked with Steph Curry over the summer on threes and he learned how to shoot and he learned how to go deeper into the court and take those 25 and 27 and 28 footers that he wasn't taking earlier. That Curry helped him with this and he did in warmups, not in the game. He had the respect for Curry not to do it. He gave it a night night in the warmups after he hit about a 32 foot shot. Antman, Tony, I saw that. I know you're slow to it. You want to push back on all of us who fell in love with him last year, but you're gonna move over. You're going to move over.
Tony Kornheiser
You were a sports columnist. I was a sports columnist. The column is Curry is out. Everything stems from Curry being out in that series. What's next?
Mike Wilbon
Toss up. More likely to win on the road tonight, the Pacers or the Nuggets I.
Tony Kornheiser
Don'T like the Nuggets to win tonight. I mean, the Nuggets have had to have miracles to win their games. They had a last second, three on one. They went to overtime in another. What's left for jokic to get 50 points? But he's shooting terribly, especially from three. So I don't like the Nuggets tonight. I'm not saying I like the Pacers, but I think that the Pacers have been really impressive. And in this series, they have won games small, medium and large. They won by one, they won by nine, they won by 20. It's a very impressive body of work from a team where nobody in America can name three starters. So I think they're going to win the series. If not tonight, I think they're going to win it the next shot that they've got.
Mike Wilbon
Yeah, I think the answer to this question specifically, though, Tony, is the Nuggets, because they're still champs. And even when they play, you know, like a C plus game, they can be in it because they know how to close. And even though Joker is. Joker's being defended. Okay. Oklahoma City is the number one defense in the league for a reason. All season, they got bigs, multiples of them. They know how to at least try to defend Joker. Now, the Nuggets basically could have lost the other two games. The two games they won. I mean, Oklahoma City probably should have won each one of those games. Games one and three.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Mike Wilbon
So the answer is still the Nuggets. I don't know. Even though Cleveland is hurt, Tony, those guys are limping around. Cleveland looks good for the taking, but.
Tony Kornheiser
We don't know how sturdy Donovan Mitchell will be.
Mike Wilbon
That's right.
Tony Kornheiser
We don't know about the other three guys. And that's why I think Indiana has a better chance.
Mike Wilbon
A better chance.
Tony Kornheiser
Because once it's reasonable. That's what I'm saying.
Mike Wilbon
It's reasonable. But you know, Joker, hard to go against him.
Tony Kornheiser
That's it. Let's take one last break. Still to come, Michael Harris, second, makes a memorable catch. Yeah. Against the Nats, of course. Sure, sure.
Mike Wilbon
And the Blazers and we had a preview to this some time ago. Are up for sale.
Tony Kornheiser
It's Washington D.C. sports. Last night, Capitals lose, Wizards fall to six. Nats get walked off by the Braves. Nice night. Nice night.
Mike Wilbon
You should move. Pick up and move. Move to a place with some winners.
Tony Kornheiser
North Scottsdale is where I'm thinking.
Mike Wilbon
Yeah, baby.
C
Big Finish is brought to you by. Stay, Bill. Keep your engines healthy. Start with Stay Bill.
Tony Kornheiser
Happy time people. Happy 20th 22nd birthday, Jackson Dart Dart is the Ole Miss quarterback who became the second quarterback taken in last month's NFL draft when the New York Giants took him at number 25 long after their early first round pick of Abdul Carter. The Giants needed a quarterback because Daniel Jones had not worked out and had been released during the season. Dart completed 69.3% of his passes this season, throwing for 4,270 79 yards, 29 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Dart started for three seasons at Ole Miss. He was 29 and 10 there. Any discussion of quarterbacks drafted this year of course leads to Shador Sanders and the Line. It took two days to get a new Pope and three to draft Shador Sanders.
Mike Wilbon
Tony I spent a chunk of time the last two weeks in New York. I've not heard any person, not one bring up the Giants quarterback in draft. Not one. It is all about the Knicks. It's all about Jalen Brunson and whatever's going on in Madison Square Garden. Not one mention of a quarterback taking that high in the draft. Kind of surprising.
Tony Kornheiser
I think it's all about the Yankees and Mets too. If you got outside the Garden you might hear a little bit of that. Happy Anniversary Bryce Harper on this day eight years ago, the Nationals young MVP winning star avoided arbitration by signing a contract against extension that would pay him an arbitration record $21.6 million. In 2018, his last year before free agency, Harper celebrated by hitting a two run walk off Homer with two outs in the ninth to give Washington a 64 win over the Phillies. Ironically, it was the Phillies who lured Harper with a long term deal. Harper has won an MVP in Philadelphia where he placed first, no longer the outfield. This past Saturday Harper had three three hits clocked at 111, 107 and 103 miles an hour. I don't begrudge Harper leaving Washington, but I rejoice that the Nats won the World Series without him.
Mike Wilbon
What happened? You used to be so full of vengeance and now you let Bryce Harper off the hook like this. You should be saying I hope he never wins a World Series. And he hasn't yet because he hasn't with Philadelphia.
Tony Kornheiser
Just saying he has not has not. Happy trails to extra bases for Luis Garcia Jr. The Nationals second baseman sent a deep drive to center against the Braves last night that was chased down by Michael Harris ii. Pitcher Grant Holmes called it one of the best catches he'd ever seen. The Braves went on to win the game 4, 3 and today's good news is that Ronald Acuna Jr starts a minor league rehab assignment nearly one year after tearing the ACL in his left knee. Acuna shot should be back with the big league team by June 1st.
Mike Wilbon
That's Mays Griffey stuff right there, Tone. I mean, you could throw in Freddie Land or a couple of people. If it was right field, it'd be Clemente, but in center, Mason Griffey. To me.
Tony Kornheiser
One update. The Celtics just announced a bit ago that Jayson Tatum, in fact underwent surgery to repair a torn right Achilles tendon today. And we rushed to the big finish. The Cardinal have won nine straight. Are you impressed?
Mike Wilbon
No, they're not. Within one game of the Cubs. We got that all summer. The estate of Paul Allen has begun the process of selling the Trail Blazers. Is that a big deal?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, it's a big deal. It was in his will that they would be sold. So people have planned for this. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have ended their coaching partnership after just six months. Your thoughts?
Mike Wilbon
Djokovic has lost the opening match of four of his last five tourneys. We know who he's blaming. Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson says he won't play the upcoming season under his current deal. Does that make sense?
Tony Kornheiser
So the Bengals have given everybody on offense a lot of money, and this guy is great at sacks, and they haven't given him a lot of money. So I understand it from his point of view. Last one. The jets are at the Stars tonight. Who you got?
Mike Wilbon
I want the jets to even this thing up at 2. 2. I mean, Dallas has had so much good news lately. The WNBA draft, the NBA lottery. Enough. Enough. Winnipeg, let's go.
Tony Kornheiser
We're out of time. We'll try and do better the next time. And I'm Tony Kornheiser.
Mike Wilbon
I'm Mike Wilbon. Same time tomorrow, Knuckleheads. You can get the podcast on the ESPN app or Apple Podcasts.

A surprising turn of events in the NBA Draft Lottery saw the Dallas Mavericks secure the top pick despite having only a 1.8% chance of winning. This unexpected outcome has significant implications for the franchise and the broader NBA landscape.
Tony Kornheiser speculates on potential behind-the-scenes maneuvers:
"If I were a conspiracist, I would sketch it out pretty much like this... they rigged the lottery so that the team with a 1.8 chance of winning it actually wins it." ([05:07])
The discussion delves into the ramifications for Mavericks' GM Nico Harrison, whose controversial trade of Luka Doncic has drawn criticism:
"Nico Harrison has saved his job... he's sitting on a bed of roses." ([05:07])
Michael Wilbon reflects on their earlier predictions about Dallas being a focal point:
"We had it narrowed down to, like San Antonio, Dallas, Philly... Boom. It's Dallas, Tony." ([06:50])

MLB has made a groundbreaking decision to remove 16 deceased players, including the iconic Pete Rose, from its permanently ineligible list, making them eligible for Hall of Fame consideration.
Tony Kornheiser summarizes Commissioner Rob Manfred's stance:
"Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game." ([08:22])
Michael Wilbon expresses a detached reaction, emphasizing Rose's legacy:
"Pete Rose is dead. He’s dead. And Pete Rose... we always loved talking to him." ([08:59])
The conversation touches on the potential Hall of Fame induction, though both hosts remain skeptical about Rose and others' prospects:
"I do not see Pete Rose... I don’t think it’s going to happen." ([10:57])
Timestamp: [12:34 - 16:52]
The episode shifts focus to the ongoing Timberwolves-Warriors series, debating whether Stephen Curry or Anthony Edwards is the bigger story.
Tony Kornheiser asserts Curry's pivotal role:
"The answer is Steph Curry. He's hurt, he's out, and they can't win without him." ([12:54])
Michael Wilbon counters by highlighting Edwards' improvement, citing his impressive performances:
"He scored 36 and 30 in the next two games. Anthony Edwards is moving over." ([14:48])
Despite Edwards' growth, the consensus leans towards Curry's influence being more critical to the series outcome.
Timestamp: [16:54 - 16:52]
The hosts debate the likelihood of the Indiana Pacers versus the Denver Nuggets winning their respective road games.
Tony Kornheiser expresses doubt about the Nuggets' ability to secure victories without miraculous plays:
"The Nuggets have had to have miracles to win their games... I don’t like the Nuggets tonight." ([15:03])
Michael Wilbon acknowledges Denver's resilience and championship experience:
"The Nuggets... they know how to close." ([16:00])
Ultimately, opinions diverge, with Tony favoring the Pacers due to their consistent performances, while Michael remains slightly more optimistic about the Nuggets' championship pedigree.
