Pardon the interruption, but I'm Mike lobond. It's National Go Barefoot Day. Tony, do you like to go barefoot?
Tony Kornheiser
Tony Kornheiser? You betcha. I got a five star rating on WikiFeet. What? What does that mean? What is WikiFeet?
Mike Wilbon
Jim McMahon plays golf barefoot. Barefoot.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Plays barefoot.
Mike Wilbon
And at some clubs people have to say, Mr. McMahon, our great friend in
Tony Kornheiser
tennis, Bud Collins, played tennis barefoot.
Mike Wilbon
No, he didn'.
Tony Kornheiser
He played tennis Bud, but Collins. Welcome to pti, boys and girls. In today's episode, the spurs win the West. The Knicks await, and Serena Williams is officially returning to tennis. But we begin today with a blockbuster trade in the NFL. The Browns are sending seven time all pro defensive end Miles Garrett to the Rams for pass rusher Jared verse, plus a first round pick in 2027, a future second and a future third. In other big news, the Eagles finally traded A.J. brown to the Patriots. Le Bond. Let us start with Garrett. What is your reaction to the magnitude of this trade?
Mike Wilbon
I mean, it's a wow. It's a wow because you know that people have been putting in calls to Cleveland and Cleveland has always just sort of batted them away like Nats, you know, and just said, eh, no, we're not doing that. And then the Rams, who had a draft, as some people criticize, they draft a quarterback out of Alabama who appears to be two, three years away from playing. And folks got angry at that.
Tony Kornheiser
Who were Rams people.
Mike Wilbon
You didn't help your team right away for right now, unless SN said, calm down, stay calm, and boom, they come up with the big fish. Miles Garrett is the big fish. He's a guy who wrecks other teams who now joins the team. He's got to be so excited he's away from Cleveland.
Tony Kornheiser
Michael Parsons was the big fish, remember last year?
Mike Wilbon
But Michael Parsons not as big as Garrett Garrett.
Tony Kornheiser
No, you love Garrett Garrett.
Mike Wilbon
I think Garrett's the best defensive player in the league and he must be the. He may be the best player in the league and now he's going to go someplace where he's not looking at finishing fourth in his division. He's looking at challenging the Seahawks, among others, to win. Now, how great is this for them?
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, so I'm a little surprised by this for this reason, maybe you are as well. I had no indication Myles Garrett wanted to leave Cleveland. In fact, I got the sense that he was okay staying with Cleveland, thinking Cleveland was going to go up. So I don't know about that. But yes, it is a blockbuster. Myles Garrett now has the single season sack record of 23, which he got last year. In his first nine seasons, he has 125 and a half sacks. And there's only one person ever with more in that period of time. That's Reggie White. So the guy is a total stud. Now, let me get to the Rams for a second. What this shows you and you had most of it, right? The Rams do this to get ahead of Seattle and stay ahead of the 49ers because the Rams are always going for it. The Rams traded when they had Jared Goff, I believe is the number one overall pick, and they traded him for Matthew Stafford. And how'd that work out? They had Cooper cup, great receiver. They said, okay, you can go now. They drafted Ty Simpson. Like you're saying, maybe for next year, maybe for the year after. But they make big moves. And one of the reasons I think they make big moves is to keep their coach, Sean McVay interested, not going to TV so he sees a new roster because they got a roster now. It's a big deal. This is a big deal.
Mike Wilbon
The Rams have had the Rams understand the market they play in. They're in Los Angeles. They got to entertain.
Tony Kornheiser
That's right.
Mike Wilbon
And they need big stars. Every place doesn't have to go about it this way. You can build through the draft. You can do all these things for your future. General manager's job is different necessarily than the coach's job. And yet this general manager has managed to look forward, look at the overall health of the team, makes a big
Tony Kornheiser
splash, big picture, trying to work.
Mike Wilbon
And now he can replace Aaron Donald in a way. And. And they had Aaron Donald, who was their closer when they won their last Super Bowl.
Tony Kornheiser
Not every team is trying to win. The Rams are always trying to win different ways to what does this leave Cleveland? Where does this leave Cleveland?
Mike Wilbon
Jared versus a good player.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, but now their fans are going to have to be like you at 3 in the morning. Look at the mock draft for 2027. If I'm a Cleveland fan, I am disheartened by this. It feels like my guts are Being
Mike Wilbon
well if you weren't going to get any better even with the best defensive player.
Tony Kornheiser
Quick comment. AJ Brown. I think he really helps the Patriots. He's a number one. He's a number one.
Mike Wilbon
He helps Drake overstated for two years. He is not Jerry Rice. But to listen to this network and others, you would think he's Jerry damn Rice. No, he's not that good. He's not. And is he a pain in the tuchus as you used to say? He is that too.
Tony Kornheiser
There are horses for courses. I think he's going to help New England, the Patriots. I think he's going to help.
Mike Wilbon
His coach knows him.
Tony Kornheiser
Let's move to basketball. And the San Antonio spurs making the NBA finals after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in Oklahoma City for the second time in this series and winning Game 7. 111. 103. Victor Wembanyama's 22 points for San Antonio were overshadowed by Shai Gilgeous Alexander's 35 points for Oklahoma City, but the rest of the spurs were terrific. Wilbon, what does this result say about each team?
Mike Wilbon
First, let me offer you congratulations on two fronts.
Tony Kornheiser
Believe I had this one. Yeah.
Mike Wilbon
But that the team of the real team of your life, the New York Knicks in the finals. Right. And yes, you said San Antonio months for months. But you're gonna give me some credit on one thing I said the day we started talking about the NBA season, I said there will not be a repeat champion.
Tony Kornheiser
At least two. You got that right. That we will now for the eighth year in a row have a different champion.
Mike Wilbon
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Mike Wilbon
What does it say about these teams? Wow. San Antonio, they are irresistible. I mean win Binyama first, but then when you have Ron Harper's kid playing like he's playing growing up before eyes. Stephon Castle, who I think is the new coming sga. In other words, he can be an mvp except he's going to be always overshadowed, I guess by his teammate and W man, but they got so many people. Darren Fox, they got Vsel. They got a lot of people who can try and guard Jalen Brunson.
Tony Kornheiser
Who. Nobody's going to do it. They're not going to be able to do it. I. I don't know that they're not.
Mike Wilbon
Uh, you picked them.
Tony Kornheiser
You picked San Antonio. I understand. I'm just saying. So you think that's an impossible guard for that team? For that team? It's not.
Mike Wilbon
They got five dudes who. Who are athletic and bigger than Brunson. I don't know that it's a Brunson
Tony Kornheiser
shoves you all the time. He's tough.
Mike Wilbon
Brunson is tough. And by the way, what it says for the league is what a great series to have, to look forward to, to have the Knicks and Spurs.
Tony Kornheiser
So that's, that's the next story. That's not this story. This story is the. The Spurs. Here's what it tells me about Oklahoma City. That it's very hard to win a series when one of your starters and your key reserves are not playing. It's very hard for that to happen.
Mike Wilbon
No, no, Jake.
Tony Kornheiser
And you're playing right and you're playing against someone who may be an all time great. That's very hard. I understand why Gilgis Alexander said it means that the season is a failure, but they won more games than any other team in the league. I think when you get away from the immediate disappointment, you realize it's not a failure, but it's possible. San Antonio just had Oklahoma City's number. Do you know what Oklahoma City's record was against the rest of the league? Because it's astonishing. It's 71 and 14, something like that, and 4 and 8 against this particular team.
Mike Wilbon
The spurs are different.
Tony Kornheiser
They are a rocket ship right now, Mike.
Mike Wilbon
And here's the thing.
Tony Kornheiser
How many games did win last year? 32. They didn't make the playoffs. They're a rocket ship.
Mike Wilbon
They are. If you're okc, by the way, just to go because we're going to wrap up on okc, what do you do? You're looking at San Antonio now edge past you and you did not have your second most important player who was an All Pro, not just an All Star, an All Pro. Okay, so you don't have him. Do you run it back. No. I hate what happened to Chet Holmgren. He just didn't post. He had a game. He had no game. And so now I believe that that's very likely Chet Holmgren's last game in an Oklahoma City.
Tony Kornheiser
You said that to me this morning. You said you thought Giannis was going to end up.
Mike Wilbon
Why wouldn't you be calling me?
Tony Kornheiser
So this is something that I think we have to deal with because there is an assumption led by people like you, that there will be a Wembanyama era. And maybe there will be. Maybe there will be. You may have started, but the greatest player in the game doesn't always win. Doesn't win all the time.
Mike Wilbon
Right?
Tony Kornheiser
Wilt didn't win all the time. Wilt hardly ever won. Magic and Bird did not win all the Time.
Mike Wilbon
They had each other. They had to battle.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay? They didn't win all. Kareem did not win all the time. Jordan did not win all the time. The only guy who won all the time was Bill Russell.
Mike Wilbon
Right?
Tony Kornheiser
But Bill Russell was never said to be the greatest individual player. Right.
Mike Wilbon
From what you saw with San Antonio. And you were late. You didn't want to come there in November, December.
Tony Kornheiser
You were right. Because of you. Because you were slurping the guy too much.
Mike Wilbon
Now, you were right there, shoulder to shoulder, marveling at this kid with all of us, right?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. No, he is a marvel. He may end up being the greatest basketball player of all time. That doesn't mean it's not one on one. It's five on five.
Mike Wilbon
His cast is pretty good.
Tony Kornheiser
That's pretty good.
Mike Wilbon
Pretty good in game seven.
Tony Kornheiser
Wait till you hear what I have to say about this. Okay, go ahead.
Mike Wilbon
The spurs now host your Knicks in game one of the finals Wednesday night. The Knicks will have had eight days off by the time they tip things off and 53 years since they last won the title. Tone, your initial thoughts on this matchup are what?
Tony Kornheiser
My initial thought was that the Knicks were lucky to get San Antonio and not Oklahoma City because Oklahoma City has been a champion. They know the schedule. They know what's going on. They're not aspiring to it. They get it. San Antonio is ahead of the curve. We didn't think that they would be here this year. So they are neophytes and so are the Knicks. They are. My second thought was that, and I said this to you a minute or so ago, I don't think that anybody on that team can guard Jalen Brunson. I think people on Oklahoma City could guard Jalen Brunson. I'm not sure that San Antonio can guard him. I think in Karl Anthony Towns, the Knicks have somebody that Wembanyama has to worry about. This isn't like going against Hartenstein and Holmgren. It's not. He's a much more accomplished player. And I'll give you a status, by the way.
Mike Wilbon
Mitchell Robinson's injury could hurt them, though, because they need minutes. Because Carl Anthony Towns, I love him. He gets in foul trouble. He does.
Tony Kornheiser
Let me give you a stat that's crazy.
Mike Wilbon
Okay?
Tony Kornheiser
There are. In the NBA now, there are 20 people in the NBA who have been the primary defender against Wembanyama for more than 100 minutes in his career. The one who has allowed the least amount of points is OJ Anunoby. OG Ananobi.
Mike Wilbon
OG Anunoby.
Tony Kornheiser
So if you have the combination of an. That's something that Wembanyama has to worry about. And my third point here would be, and I mean no disrespect to the greater area of San Antonio, Texas, or their great fans. I think it's different to go into New York City and Madison Square Garden. I think that can be shocking to the system for a little while. Maybe it allows the Knicks to steal a game here or there. They played once in the Garden this year. You know what the final was?
Mike Wilbon
It was biggest with a lot of 25.
Tony Kornheiser
The Knicks won by 25.
Mike Wilbon
Let me say this. When Banyamo wants all the smoke all the time, okay? And he looks at the Garden, to me, I'm gonna say this. I can't believe I'm saying this. Like Magic and Bird and Reggie and Michael and Kobe and Shaq, he. He wants it and he delivers. And I'm thinking, oh, my God. Now, I'm gonna differ with you on one thing. You know, I love Jalen Brunson, Chicago's own Jalen Brunson. But Tony, they do have the people who guard him because these guys are bigger and they're as quick and they are. They're not as crafty as Brunson. Brunson's the craftiest guy in the series. But when you have.
Tony Kornheiser
He's tough. He's so physically tough.
Mike Wilbon
By the way, this is a hell of a series, isn't it? It looks like that projection. You're reluctant, I hope. Why are you?
Tony Kornheiser
Well, because the last 10 series that I've seen, three quarters of the games have been by 30 points.
Mike Wilbon
Nothing to do with this matchup. And these people.
Tony Kornheiser
It's an attractive matchup. It's an attractive matchup. Let's take a break. Coming up, the French Open is relying on lions people over technology. Is that the right way to go?
Mike Wilbon
No. And did Russell Henley win yesterday's Colonial, or did Eric Cole lose it? Where were they playing?
Tony Kornheiser
Did they.
Mike Wilbon
Was there golf yesterday?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. Oh, was there?
Mike Wilbon
Really?
Tony Kornheiser
At Van Hogan, there's no golf course
Mike Wilbon
until the United States Open.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no, no. I watched it.
Mike Wilbon
Of course I watched it. It was AI.

Tony Kornheiser
Let me see what's first.
Mike Wilbon
They don't want to turn the tie.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you like that the lines that the French Open are still being called by humans?
Mike Wilbon
I don't think so. And we'll have some video here coming up. Tony, we got to start with Casper Rude. He's going to win the second set in the tiebreaker. Except this ball is called in by a human being, which as we know, have been in all other tournaments that matter Replace no human beings technology.
Tony Kornheiser
All right.
Mike Wilbon
The human says the ball is in television shows only to the viewer, right? Not to people there and not to the players. It shows the ball is out. But there is a margin of error technologically that we don't know that the French Open people say matters. I say get all of this the hell out of here. Once you show people at home what's happening. And this is why I always thought replay had to come into form in the way it is in all sports. You're showing the people at home what really is. That's their reality. Anything else is a matter, which is why we've now gone to this. In baseball, it's overtone. You talk about the optics of something. This is bad.
Tony Kornheiser
So if you ask me, do I like that humans are calling it, I do. Okay. I like the human factor. I can live with the fact that occasionally the wrong call is there because this is what you and I grew up with, with umpires, with referees, with linesmen. Sometimes you get hosed and you learn to go on. But it strikes me that my position is overly romanticized and overly nuanced and that if the technology is there, we need to trust the technology and move into this brave new world. You talked about this. I love that. I love the ball strike challenge. I love it for three reasons.
Mike Wilbon
But you can't have it both ways.
Tony Kornheiser
One, they get it right.
Mike Wilbon
Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Two, they reward the correct challeng. They punish the bear challenge. So what they have done, they've made technology exciting. Don't do that with this. I am. No, I am I'm just saying, in my heart, I would like to have humans, but I think we're past.
Mike Wilbon
You know what's weird about that piece of video? It's dated. It's like John McEnroe's gonna start screaming at somebody, you know, which. That was the coolest part of that ever.
Tony Kornheiser
When that would happen with Mack.
Mike Wilbon
It's over.
Tony Kornheiser
For that tone. It's done. I understand.
Mike Wilbon
I know it's kind of. I have regrets.
Tony Kornheiser
I have regrets. That's all I'm saying.
Mike Wilbon
Did Russell Henley win the Colonial or did Eric Cole lose it?
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, for those of you who didn't watch, like you and I did watch, the only way you can theorize that Cole lost the tournament is if you look at the birdie putt on 17 that he missed, right? It was about a 10 footer. He was a little bit to the left. And you say, well, that was the end of the tournament. But in fact, it wasn't like he was over par on the back nine. In fact, he was one under on Sunday on the back nine. No, no, no. Russell Henley won this. He went birdie, birdie, birdie on 16, 17, 18. He was three strokes down. He tied it. He gets to a playoff with Cole. They go out to the 18th again. He birdies the 18th again. So he has four straight birdies, and five of his last 10 holes are birdies. And that's what we call winning the tournament, Holmes. And all I want to say to people out there, Send me that jacket. It's another one of those player jackets. I'll wear it on the show. A white shirt and a dark top.
Mike Wilbon
The only thing I would have cared about in this tournament is I would have rooted for the son of Laura
Tony Kornheiser
Ball, which is Eric Kohl. That's right.
Mike Wilbon
There's no golf. There's no golf until we get to the US Open.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, what did you watch?
Mike Wilbon
Champions League on the weekend?
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, yeah. Mr. Soccer.
Mike Wilbon
There was Arsenal against PSG. Look, we're in the run up to the world's biggest event. We're in the run up to the World Cup.
Tony Kornheiser
Nowhere.
Mike Wilbon
Okay? Nowhere. But then it didn't. As you get ready for.
Tony Kornheiser
But none of those teams are in
Mike Wilbon
the World cup, by the way, Tony.
Tony Kornheiser
Right. Those are private teams, not public nationals.
Mike Wilbon
But the players are all in there. The players from both team. A glut of them from both PSG and Arsenal. And I'm told by people who know more about this, like my special correspondent, Jordan Ross Wilbon.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Mike Wilbon
Who I watched with, that the game wasn't particularly great. A lot of people hate the way Arsenal plays. They don't go for anything stylistically challenging. They lost and Arsenal lost in. In penalties. But you got to come on now. You got to come over. We'll get to golf. U.S. open. I got it.
Tony Kornheiser
Are you going? Are you saying you're suggesting you're going to lead me into the valley of soccer? I'm going to try and keep me dry.
Mike Wilbon
I've been led there.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, that's enough from that. Let's take one last break. Still to come, Russell Wilson. Your boy appears to be closing in on a new gig.
Mike Wilbon
Television. Serena makes her comeback official.
Tony Kornheiser
You don't want that, do you?
Mike Wilbon
Serena coming back?
Tony Kornheiser
No. You don't want that.
Mike Wilbon
No. She's the goat. Just let it go.
Tony Kornheiser
Go. You have to go.
Mike Wilbon
Well, one of five.
Tony Kornheiser
There's five. There's five.
Mike Wilbon
You can argue that. I hear you.
Tony Kornheiser
There's five.
Mike Wilbon
I hear you.
Tony Kornheiser
But you.
Mike Wilbon
Serena can stand on what she did.

Happy time, people. Happy 65th birthday. Paul Coffey, the Hall of Fame defenseman was on four Stanley cup champions. Three with the Edmonton Oilers with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, and one with the Pittsburgh Penguins with Mario Lemieux and Jaramir Jagr. Coffey was awarded the Norris Trophy three times as the NHL's best defenseman. Eight time all star. Second all time to Ray Borg for points by defenseman. His number seven sweater was retired by the Oilers. Coffey has the most goals in one season by a defenseman, 48. And the most playoff points ever by a defenseman, 196. Wow. The Athletic ranks Coffey number 18 on their list of the 100 best players in modern NHL hobby 18. And one of the businesses Coffey now owns is a 24 hour coin operated

car wash. Off the top of my head I wrote down or coffee Bork and Larry Robinson. But they got Lipstrom and popvin above Robinson. Coffee 18. Really?
Tony Kornheiser
You want him higher?
Mike Wilbon
I think so. Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Happy anniversary, Vince Coleman. On this day 40 years ago, the Cardinals elite base Steeler survived not one, not two, not three, but 17 pickoff attempts from Reds pitcher Chris Welch before ultimately stealing one of his 107 stolen bases that season. Coleman stole over 100 bases his first three years in a major. But more important to us today is that Coleman ended the Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan longtime feud. Coleman was at Jordan's golf course, Grove 23, where Wilbon hangs out. And he called Barkley with Jordan present, put them together on the phone because he, Coleman was, as he said, sick of this BS between the two of them. And now Barkley and Jordan are good and Barkley plans to go to Grove 23 and play golf with Jordan. Can Coleman get a Nobel Peace Prize?
Mike Wilbon
It wasn't a feud. They just didn't interact for a long time. Was it a feud?
Tony Kornheiser
It's not. That's how it was written.
Mike Wilbon
Standing O for Vince.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, absolutely.
Mike Wilbon
But you're seeing enough.
Tony Kornheiser
And a melancholy trails Raymond Berry. The hall of Fame receiver has died at the age of 93. Berry led the NFL in receiving yards three times, winning two titles with the Baltimore Colts. One of those was the legendary overtime win over the Giants in 1958 in which Berry caught 12 balls from Johnny Unitis for 178 yards on a touchdown. Berry was a completely improbable star. He totaled just 33 catches over three seasons at SMU. He was drafted in the 20th round. The offensive line coach of one of his teams once said, quote, everyone can outrun him, even me. But Berry claimed to have 88 moves to shake a defender and rarely dropped the ball. He also coached the Patriots to a Super bowl in which they got humbled by your Bears.
Mike Wilbon
Wilbon, Tony, you think about Unus to Barry, only to me. Montana to Rice is in that category. I don't know that anybody else is in that category.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, it's a long time ago and the Baltimore Colts don't exist. And so there's a lot of reasons not to remember this. But unit us to bury was the first of the great combos. Yeah, first of the great combos. See if we can go to the big finish. Serena Williams will return to tennis. Playing doubles in next week's Queens Club Tournament. Is that a big deal?
Mike Wilbon
Not necessarily. It's what it could lead to if Serena's thinking about coming back. Singles? I'm just saying. I wonder. Serena. US Men's Soccer. I'm just saying.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Mike Wilbon
US Men's Soccer beat Senegal 32 in a friendly. Significant.
Tony Kornheiser
It might be. I mean, Pulisic scored a goal. I mean, that's so happy. So, yeah, you know. Yeah, maybe. Russell Wilson, who I know you love, is reportedly finalizing a deal to become an analyst for CBS Sports. That makes sense to you?
Mike Wilbon
Total sense. Friendly, approachable, engaging. Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
And can't and can't be a quarterback.
Mike Wilbon
It's over now.
Tony Kornheiser
It's over.
Mike Wilbon
The Braves, the first team to 40, wins. You impressed?
Tony Kornheiser
I am. But the Nats last week in Atlanta took two out of three.
Mike Wilbon
We're going to have to get a

Mike Wilbon
I do.
Tony Kornheiser
Seven, five, six, three.
Mike Wilbon
Today.
Tony Kornheiser
You're disappointed. Yes.
Mike Wilbon
But she's the number one player in the world. Sabalenka. And she pretty much beats everybody at some point.
Tony Kornheiser
So, you know, we're out of time. Let me get my flag. We'll try to do better the next time. And Layne Harshbarger. Shout out.
