Double Acid (WIP) (excerpt) by Quextal
My "remix" of Helskanki's Nikata, released in 2012. This one has a bit more in common with the original version than my DBF "remix" did, but it's still basically a Quextal original taking some inspiration from the Helskanki version. But I did actually use some of the samples this time... I've had an excerpt of this track on soundcloud for years but can now provide you with the full version.
This track is unfinished, but I'm almost certainly never going to finish it, so decided to put it up for free download. This track has a history... The very first proper electronic music I wrote was a track called Acclimatize in 1993. It wasn't much more than a single riff over some polyrhythmic percussion, written on a borrowed synth. About 7 years later when I started putting together my own cheap home studio, I went back to that track and started writing more to it... and more, and more, over months and years, until it became a 21-minute symphonic epic, yet still unfinished, called Xa. Xa is a very quirky track, some great bits, some awful, far too much going on, and it's questionable whether it really holds together as a single item... but because it sucked up so many ideas over the years, it has in turn become a source of inspiration and riffs in several subsequent tunes. There's an arp-and-pad breakdown in Xa that I always found particularly en-trancing and emotional, and so I decided to build a new tune around it - hence Xia was born. If it sounds retro, that's the reason... Yes, that's me singing (badly) in the breakdown. I'd intended to re-do that, and there was a lot else I never quite got around to doing. I was never happy with the bassline(s) - I'm not sure the whole syncopated bass thing really works. Basically, I've sat on this tune for nearly 3 years without doing a damn thing to it, so I think it's obvious it's not going any further. Plus, it was done in Logic, and I realised I don't like Logic. I may start again with it in Ableton, one day.
