
A Senate inquiry has heard the illicit tobacco market now accounts for around 50-60% of all tobacco sales in Australia — worth around 7 billion dollars to crime gangs. It's estimated the federal government is now losing out on more than 11 billion dollars in tobacco excise annually. While public health advocates and the tobacco industry argue over the merits of lowering the tobacco excise, small businesses are caught in the middle.
