feels like every year we have to report on wildfires in the same area and our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Especially if you want to help in any way or apply for assistance here. Here are the details. The Oklahoma Cattlemen's foundation has established a relief fund to help cattle producers who have been affected by the recent wildfires in Oklahoma. The Fire Relief Fund at the Oklahoma Cattlemen's foundation will distribute 100% of received funds to impacted cattle producers. And don't worry, we will have the direct links in the show notes for this episode@ranchituphow.com for your convenience. On the Kansas Livestock Association's homepage you can find where to make cash donations or to help with HA donations. Again, we have the direct links in the show notes and we will share those all over our social media network as well. The loss of access to China for more than nine months cost U.S. beef exporters nearly $1.1 billion last year, according to the U.S. meat Export Federation. China withdrew export registrations in early March 2025 from most U.S. meat facilities after the Trump administration slapped a series of tariffs on Chinese goods. The licenses were reissued within days for poultry and pork facilities, but have remained expired for nearly all beef processors and exp. Compared to 2024, beef exports by volume were down 12% last year to less than 1.14 million metric tons. The global export decline was nearly 150,000 metric tons, while the loss of volume to China was about 120,000 metric tons. Amid record global beef prices for much of last year, US exports of beef were down 11% by value to $9.33 billion, equivalent to the drop in sales to mainland China. A truce announced at the end of October in the trade war called for China to drop non tariff bar goods, but the beef export registration issue remains. The U.S. supreme Court ruling invalidated President Donald Trump's claim of unlimited emergency tariff powers Removing what the White House claimed was important negotiating leverage. This is Beck for the Ranch it Up radio show, and that's been the news.

Now let's talk horses for a bit. Horses to meet everyone's fancy. That is the Alabama Select Horse Sale. It's becoming one of the hottest events in the south, and for good reason. And now we're going to visit a little bit with Seth Maxey with Magnolia Livestock Services, the sale manager and coordinator of the event. So, Seth, what do y' all have for horses? Ranch horses, arena performance? Pleasure. Is it kind of all of the above that are being offered?
C
So the good thing about the Montgomery area is you're 15 minutes from trail riding associations, you're 15 minutes from feedlot types and a lot of stocker calf operations. And there's an opportunity there for a lot of people to have different types of horses for everybody. So to answer your question, we have a little bit of everything because that's what the area requires. We have ponies for the kids. We have gated horses for some field trial type of hunters. We have ranch horses for the cowboys in the area. We have roping horses for. For the team ropers area, which is a very big team rope community, believe it or not. So we truly have something for the entire family.
A
Now, I know we're kind of picking on you a little bit because last year was your first sale and and this year is your number two. So let's talk about geography, a little bit of where these horses went. Even though you said you're in a location where just within a few minutes, there's multiple different disciplines and needs for those horses based on maybe what your occupation or your hobby is. But let's talk about areas that you've sent these horses, because I'm sure they have crossed the state lines, they've crossed regional lines, and you've kind of pushed them all over the country.
C
Absolutely. So we had 300 buyers from 11 states, including ones online, to kind of give you a general area. Basically, from Texas to North Carolina up to Kentucky down into Florida, we had quite a few buyers from, like I said, 11 states. And we were kind of proud of that fact. You know, we are focusing on quality instead of quantity. So we had 75 head and, you know, and then broadcast those over 11 states. I was pretty proud of that.
A
So, like, with some of the videos and some of the horses. Now, these are finished horses, right? Or is it like just kind of a duke's mixture? You've got some that are probably considered finished horses. You've got maybe some that got 30 days on, you've got some that just need a job. Is that kind of the range is you've got really a big mixture of horses from top to bottom.
C
Absolutely. So I tell you a little bit about this year's sale is we had a, a breeder in Mississippi who, excuse me, in Alabama who has been breeding reigning horses for over 50 years and he's consigning his herd to our sale and he has weanlings all the way up to 8 year old heavy bred mares. That is if we're not going to have a pair by the sale, we'll be lucky. So we have then everything in between. I have a friend there in Alabama as well who's bringing us to super nice 4 year olds that are going to be cutting prospects. And then we have another friend from Mississippi who has the Riata buckle incentives paid for 4 year old gelding that is going to be a finished head horse. And so we have maturity prospects. And then of course we have something for the husbands. We'll have a you know, 14, 15 year old geldings that are, have more woe than go as they say and you know, are a little slower. So we, so we have husband safe horses, we have cowgirl safe horses. We have truly a good, a good selection for everybody. And last but not least, one of our staples here at the Alabama Select Horse sale is we have a scholarship program for the Southeastern Livestock Exposition. So what we'll do is we'll have a certain lots that we sell that the proceeds from that will help go back towards the scholarship fund. I had a friend of mine from Mississippi donate his little mini donkey herd to that fund. Oh my God. We're gonna be. Yes. So we have many donkeys, we have ponies all the way up to 15 three handed tall four year old number one rope horses. And, and that's the good thing about this deal is they're all quality horses, they really are. And there's truly a buyer for all of them because I've get, I've got guys calling me for barrel prospects. We're gonna have those. I've had people call me for roping horses. We have those, we have brood mares, we have Phillies that are ready to breed. So we got stuff that you can show now, breed later, you know, or you know, there's. The possibilities here are limitless on the sale this year and we're super excited about it.
A
Now Seth, just hold on here. I need to take a quick break but I have a few more questions about the details of the sale that I want to go over. So just hold with us for a little bit and crew stick around as well. We will have more of the Ranch it Up radio show when we come back.

Coming soon to ranchchannel.com the sales series the evolution of how producers connect with elite livestock and proven operations from top end bulls, heifers and horses to land equipment, products and programs shaping the future of agriculture. The sale series where smart ranching starts. Find out more by emailing inforanchchannel.com Calf prices are good, but want to add another hundred bucks per calf? Here's the solution. Galvian Balancer females add an average maternal weaning weight advantage of 22.7 pounds per calf at a market price of four and a half dollars a pound on five weight steers with a 22.7 pound weaning weight advantage, that's an additional $102.15 per calf. Galve and Balancer females, they make it work. Welcome back to the Ranch it up radio show and we are back with Seth Maxey with the Alabama Select Horse Sale. Now Maxi, you and I, we've got the connection of of course the rodeo side. And you and I have become very, very good friends over the years and on the cattle side on a number of different, I'm going to say facets and sectors on the cattle side. And you and I have never really talked on the horse side much. So I'm curious about this deal because we're kind of building up our horse program. Is color a big thing where you're at in down there at Alabama? Is that a big thing where all of a sudden if you've got a really good prospect and you try not to, you don't pay attention to color so much. But if you've got a cool colored one, you've got a griller, you've got a cool roni that by golly, he's going to ring the bell is color. You know, it goes along with it that you want a good one. But it's nice to have a good one. That looks good too.
C
Absolutely. And one thing, you know, of course you try not to look at color, like you just said, but it's hard not to. It's hard not to because, like, I'm a sucker for a bay. You know, I love bays more than anything and I've always have. Yes. I don't know why, but I just. I'm a sucker for a bay horse.
A
I'll be golden. I would have thought you would have been like me. You would have been the wilder colored, the better.
C
Oh, man. Yeah. I just don't, I don't know why. I always have, but, you know, I grew up watching like John Wayne with Champ with the Sorrels. And then you have, you know, Trigger, the Palominos. And you have, you know, Danny from the Manchester river, the old Grula.
A
Yep, yep.
C
So, you know, so I mean, there's all those horses, of course, have influence over this industry. But like we have that consigner from Alabama who's got the reigning horses. He's got some red rolls. He has a black smoke Philly that I'm in love with. He has a really like a Bayron in the bunch as well. He has some grays. We have that lady from Mississippi I spoke of earlier with a four year old. It's going to be a buckskin. So we have from mild to wild as far as your color scheme goes.
A
So my last question, when it comes to the sale, do you have any kind of transportation that you'll be working with that people that are, that are obviously not going to be there, going to, going to be bidding and buying online or they may call you or one of the representatives want them to bid for them. Will there be some sort of help with transportation to get these horses to their next zip code?
C
Absolutely. So speaking of the transportation, that is my big background and that's what I have done for a long time. So I have a lot of contacts. So I negotiate the transportation with the buyers and the sellers between the two of them because I have so many contacts in that deal. So you, you tell people to call me, I'll help you set it up. Easy transition. You don't have to track nobody down. You just call me. I can have the horse delivered with anywhere in the lower 48. And I actually have one guy, he get, he shipped a load of horses to Alaska not too long ago. Swing. Really get them anywhere you need them to go. But you just call me or email me or get in touch with anybody at The SLE rodeo. And they'll be able to get you transportation, no problem. Coast to coast. Border. Border. We're excited about bringing another quality event to the south to really represent the great horses we have down here with the great consigners. And that's one thing that I do want to make sure people know this. I had an auctioneer tell me one time that good people bring good horses. And that's what we're trying to have is a quality event. And we're going to have. Speaking of the quality event, if you guys can make it, come Friday, come early because we're gonna have a kickoff social on Friday night. We're gonna have a benefit auction for the SLE Rodeo. We're gonna have about 10 or 15 items we're gonna sell Friday night. We have a live band going on Friday, March 13th. And then we have our official preview. Get started at 9am on Saturday the 14th. The sale starting is gonna be noon, gonna be central standard time. So for all my east coast or west coast people, make sure you tune into central time. It's gonna be noon and we're gonna have a great function.
A
So can we bid and buy online? Can I go online? Can I look at these horses? Can I, Can I bid? Because I know last year we had talked and you were taking consignments from a long ways away and everybody was getting along pretty darn well with the sale. So can we bid and buy online? Let's just kind of go through some specifics like that. Because from where I'm at to where you're at, it' ways away.
C
Absolutely it is. And so we are. We do have an online buying platform. We go to horse auctions. USA.hibid.com Ms. Bridget and her crew do a fantastic job working horse sales all over the country. And you can register to buy there. You can see the horses online that we're going to be selling@al select horse sale.com they're also going to be. The horses will be posted on our Facebook page page at the Alabama select horse sale Facebook page there. You can view all the horses there along with additional information like where you can stay if you want to fly in where a host hotel is. All are talking about our sponsors there, all the information regarding horses transportation, all of those things. You can check out on our website for further information.
A
So before I say fairly well, just kind of your opinion on this. And you've been getting more and more and more into the equine side of your marketing program. Excuse me, with Magnolia Livestock Services. Now, at least in my opinion, we've seen this horse market go up and down over the years. However, what I have seen remain solid and strong through those ups and downs is good horses bring good money and they always did. Even when markets were dipping and we were going through this struggle or this change or whatever it is, the good ones still always bring good money. Would you agree with that?
C
Absolutely. And you know, I hate to beat a dead horse and in so many few words here, but you know, that's, that's, that's why we're focusing on quality because there is a lot of horse sales in this industry too. There's a lot of ways to market horses between your online platforms and your there's numerous sales across the country. But that's one thing that you and I discussed in previous encounters is people are missing the social interaction when it comes to sales. They're missing the camaraderie, the hospitality, the events. You know, I've heard the stories about the late 80s and 90s of people flew in, they had a three day sale and everybody went there because it was an event, not just a business transaction. So that's one thing that we're trying to really focus on is showing off our southern hospitality to the highest level. Between everything on Friday night, our hospitality on Saturday, I have a great committee behind me working alongside me as well, really taking care of not only our sellers but our buyers as well to make sure they're really it's an easy transition from front to back.

So Mr. Donsbach, what do you got for numbers for us, buddy?
E
All right Tigger. As of Friday, February 20th, March feeder futures closed the week at 367.32 and a half. That's up $1.65. On the week the CME feeder index was up.346 at 377.37. That left a very wide positive basis of $10.04 and a half cents versus March futures. We did have a Cattle on feed that reported February 1st inventory at 98.2% versus expectations of 98.5. Placements for January were 95.3% versus expectations of 96.7 and marketed in January 87% versus expectations of 87%. All in all, a very as expected report and considered neutral. April live cattle closed the week at 241.72 and a half. That's up $1.32 and a half on the week. Cash traded light volume late Friday at 247 to 249 in the north and 249 in the south. That left the very lightly reported five area weighted average up $0.01 at 241.01 on 178 head and the bases at a negative $5.25. There have been no deliveries against February as weighted average is very lightly reported and not representative of the actual market Choice. Boxes were up 220 at 366.67. That's roughly $13 under last week's dress price which left an estimated spot factor margin at negative $350. That's a very concerning numbers there. Weekly slaughter was 516,000 head. That's down 25,000 head. Although last week was a holiday shortened week, that's 49,000 head below the same week last year. Dress weights were up 1 pound at 896. That's 21 pounds above the same week last year. The combination of slaughter and dress weights left yearly production 4/10 of a percent at 8.2% less than this week last year. Wrap this up. March corn closed the week at 428. That's up three and three quarters on the week. Corn continues to consolidate not able to close above the 437 level that we're watching. The other grain strength has been adding support to the corn market.
D
You spend good money on bulls, don't you want to know which ones are doing their job?
C
Hey hey.
D
I'm Shea Wanner and I host the casual Cattle Conversations podcast. Shane White with Saris Tag and I recently sat down to talk about technology that measures bull mounting scores and cow cyclicity. Here's a portion of our conversation. Yes, absolutely. So not only can they pair mounting scores from their bulls along with those estrus alerts, but then they can also see no that female had a 20 and a half day average of her cycle and it will be down to that kind of granularity where this female has actually had a 22 day cycle and we get to see that 22 days later she didn't come back into heat. So we have a very good indication of when they've been bred, even in a multi sire system. It also is going to allow us to at least see which bulls are working and which ones aren't and when we spend as much money as we spend on bulls in this country every year. Getting to see which bulls actually go and do their job in a timely manner is going to be very important information. Ready to tune into the full conversation? Check out the Casual Cattle Conversations podcast on your favorite podcast player as soon as you're done listening to the Ranch it up radio show.

Many of these online bidding platforms, they require setting up your account at least like 24 hours in advance. But once you get approved for bidding, you're good to bid and buy. So just FYI, if you haven't used platforms like DV Auction or LiveAg or CCI Live or Superior or any of those and now that's going to wrap it up for today. A big thanks goes out to our crew.
