and welcome to True Crime. Time for Friday, May 29, 2026. And I am Cindy Overton and we are excited that it's Friday. It is. I have a lot of interesting stories to talk about today, but to get started, let's just start with this day in True Crime. So on this day in 2019, A' Lilia Minthorn's body was discovered by agents that were led by a witness who believed they witnessed Jordan Stevens shoot Minthorn. After an autopsy was conducted, it was determined that Menthorn had been killed by a single gunshot to the head. So just over two years later, Stevens was actually convicted by a jury and was sentenced to life in prison. So I know that in doing this calendar, the people that did the calendar or the person that did it did a very good job. But of course, I always have many more questions about what happened and, you know, the story behind the story, so to speak. So let's get to some more information. A Lilia went by the name Lala, and she was 25 years old. And what's interesting about this is that and that she was an indigenous woman from Washington state. And her disappearance in 2019 highlighted ongoing cases, the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women. And that has the acronym mmiw. And like I said before, she was murdered by a man named Jordan Everett Stevens. And then ultimately, two years after her murder, he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. Minthorn was last seen in the early days of May in 2019 in Topenish, Washington. And then ultimately she was reported missing and her body wasn't discovered until this day in 2019. And she was actually found in a closed area of the Yakima National Reservation. Now, like I said before, also witnesses testified that Stevens shot men execution style. But I didn't tell you this. He believed she had spoken to federal authorities about a previous robbery he had committed. And so then there was a federal trial in June, and of course he was found guilty of first degree murder using a firearm during the crime of violence. So Menthorn's case became widely recognized by advocates working to draw attention to the MMIW crisis and systemic violence affecting Indigenous communities. So there's always more to the story and I, I like to give the more to the story. But let's now get down to some true crime time. 4 and we're going to start off with a dum Dum in the court.

It's time for dum dummy in the court.

Okay, let's be honest. I use chat GPT an awful lot. In fact, I used Chat GPT to help me find the stories today. So with that being said, I get it, I appreciate it. It's very, very helpful. But there are many, many times that ChatGPT comes back to me with a response and I literally ask it, are you sure about this? Double check your. Whatever it is, Double check the facts. Is this all of the information? And you know, then I have to go through, and I'll go through another way of checking information. Double checking actually kind of have to still use my brain. Well, some people don't actually do that, and they use ChatGPT for nefarious reasons. And we have two lawyers who got caught submitting completely fake legal cases generated by ChatGPT in federal court, and a judge fined them after discovering the cases literally did not exist. So let me tell you a little bit about this. This happened way back in 2023. So this was before, like I just started using ChatGPT within like the last year, but these people, this is years ago, but I still thought it was interesting. So a federal judge on Thursday, this article was June 22nd of 2023. So a federal judge imposed $5,000 in fines for two lawyers and a law firm in an unprecedented instance in which ChatGPT was blamed for their submission of fictitious legal research in an aviation injury claim. So Judge Kevin Castell, or Castell said they acted in bad faith. But he credited their apologies and remedial steps taken in explaining why harsher sanctions were not necessary to ensure they or others won't again let AI prompt them to produce fake legal history. In their arguments, he says technological advances are commonplace and there is nothing inherently improper about using a reliable artificial intelligence tool for assistance. But existing rules impose a gatekeeping role on attorneys to ensure the accuracy of their filings. And the judge said the lawyers and their firm, which is Levadow, Levodal and Oberyn PC, abandoned their responsibilities when they submitted non existent judicial opinions with fake quotes and citations created by AI, specifically the tool ChatGPT. And then they continued to stand by the fake opinions after judicial orders called their existence into question. And in a statement, the law firm said it would comply with Costell's order, but added, we respectfully disagree with the finding that anyone at our firm acted in bad faith. We have already apologized to the court and our client and we continue to believe that in the face of what even the court acknowledged was an unprecedented situation, we made a good faith mistake in failing to believe that. That a piece of technology could be making up cases out of whole cloth. That's crazy, the firm said. Then they doubled down. The firm said it was considering whether to appeal. And then Castell said the bad faith resulted from the failures of the attorneys to respond properly to the judge and their legal advisories were. When it was noticed that six legal cases listed to support their written arguments did not exist, the judge cited, quote, shifting and contradictory explanations, end quote, offered by attorney Stephen A. Schwartz. He said attorney Peter Loduca lied about being on vacation and was dishonest about confirming the Truth of statements submitted to Cast Castell or Castell. At the hearing, Schwartz said he used the AI powered chatbot to help him find legal precedents supporting a client's case against the Colombian airline Avianca for an injury that occurred on a 2019 flight. And then the chat bot, who we all know what ChatGPT does, suggested several cases involving aviation mishaps that Schwartz hadn't been able to find the usual methods used at his law firm. And several of those cases weren't real misidentified judges or involved airlines that actually didn't exist. The judge said one of the fake decisions generated by the chatbot had some traits that are superficially consistent with actual judicial decisions. But he said the other portions contained gibberish and were nonsensical. And so in a separate written opinion, the judge tossed out the underlying aviation claim, saying the statute of limitations had expired. So that was a couple years ago. I can only imagine what AI stuff is going on today, but it's still very much a dum dum in the court. So I did a search because as I stated, I can only imagine what is going on now. And Just recently on May 22, there was an article in Scientific American and it states the trend of attorneys getting caught citing AI hallucinated cases points to a broader problem. Instead of checking AI's work, people keep trusting it. In April, the Alabama Supreme Court sanctioned an attorney who had filed legal briefs laden with inaccurate citations generated by AI, including numerous references to cases that did not exist after being informed that he had cited a made up precedent. In one filing, the lawyer promised it would never happen again, but then cited non existent cases at the end of the very next sentence. And then at least one other lawyer was sanctioned that same week for continuing to file AI hallucinated material after being warned not to do so. There's a database maintained by Damien Charlatan, who is a senior research fellow and at the Paris School of Advanced Business Studies. And it lists more than 1400 cases where courts have addressed AI errors in the past three years, including filings by attorneys and self represented litigants. I could see that, like if I was self representing myself like I did in my custody battle for my kids in Texas, I would have definitely used and relied on ChatGPT to give me the information and I would have fallen prey to it. But I, I don't know, like I could see how that could happen. As recently as last fall, Charlatan says the list appeared to be growing exponentially. It since leveled off to a steady flow of exasperated judicial rulings. For the past two or three months, we have reached a plateau of around 350 to 400 decisions a quarter. Courtroom proceedings are public, and lawyers face sanctions for false claims, making such errors comparatively easy to track. But uncalled errors on AI generated materials have also ensnared journalists, software developers, academic researchers, and government consultants, some of whom have been well aware of AI's fallibility. On May 19, the New York Times reported that the author of a book called the Future of Truth, which is about how AI is shaping discourse, acknowledged his text contained more than half a dozen fabricated or misattributed quotes produced by the technology. The pattern emerging across these cases is that people keep trusting AI's answers, even when they know the systems can be wrong. And so far, that misplaced trust has led to dismissed legal appeals, attorney fines, fired journalists, and software outages. And experts warn the stakes will rise as AI becomes more deeply embedded in professional work. Alan Wagner, who is an associate professor of aerospace engineering at Pennsylvania State University, says humans essentially have a tendency to believe that machines have more knowledge than they do, don't break, and are infallible. AI also appears to inspire a particular kind of trust. It can generate answers that are realistic sounding but false in a way humans seldom do. And people, it turns out, can find its guidance unusually believable. And so there was a study that was published this past February, and it asked participants to complete a usage classification task with guidance they were told that came from either humans or AI. And the guidance, no matter where it came from, was right only half the time. But among participants who were told the advice came from AI, those with positive attitudes towards the technology performed worse than those who held less favorable views. No such effect appeared when participants were were told the advice came from humans. So the results suggested that AI guidance has a quite specific ability to engender biases. And this just goes on and on and it's getting into some other things. I really just wanted to share how it is continuing and obviously it's getting worse.

So A United Airlines flight out of New Jersey was forced to divert to Virginia after a passenger caused a major disturbance on board the plane. United Flight 1551 was headed to Guatemala City on Thursday, May 21 and according to air traffic control audio, a passenger tried to open the door of the plane mid flight. In the recording, a crew member says the passenger attempted to open cabin door 2L at 36,000ft and then assaulted a fellow passenger. The incident prompted the plane to divert to Washington Duals Airport in Virginia and the United Airlines spokesperson said that the flight landed safely at the airport and it was met by law enforcement. The Boeing 737 Max 8 was carrying 145 passengers and six crew members and following the incident the flight was canceled and a replacement flight was scheduled for Friday morning. Customers were provided overnight accommodations and no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. There was also a similar incident last month of a United flight from Germany to Chicago that forced it to divert to Boston due to an unruly passenger. At that time, Massport operations dispatched troopers to a United flight diverting to Logan Airport due to an unruly passenger, and this was According to Massachusetts State Police. The individual was restrained on the flight but was cooperative. By the time troopers boarded the plane. The unidentified passenger declined medical attention from the emergency medical services at the scene and he was taken into custody by U.S. customs officials. That was a Boeing 787 which was carrying 231 passengers and 12 crew members. But it later continued to Chicago and the individual was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital after being placed into custody and police said they will issue a summons for them to appear a court in court at a later date. This next story is something that is very important, something that is becoming more and more of a problem and we've got to get a grip of it and one of our new sponsors is actually going helps people with that. So this story is about scams and fraud. Older adults have suffered the greatest financial impact from fraud this last year. Americans age 60 and older report losses of $7.7 billion, which is a 60% increase from 2024. In comparison, those in their 30s and 40s reported $4.6 billion in losses, which is still ridiculous. People of all ages have filed more than 1 million Internet crime complaints with the FBI this last year, with their total reported losses climbing to 20.9 billion. Again, this is a 26% increase over 2024. These figures likely represent only a fraction of the true toll. Cause, I mean, I didn't report our fraud to the FBI, like we took different measures, but I didn't report all the times that we've had fraudulent things happen to us. Investment scams were the most lucrative schemes for criminals for the most devastating crimes. Based on reports to IC3 were investment scams, which totaled 8.6 billion in reported losses. Cryptocurrency related fraud, which is 11.3 billion, tech and customer support scams, 2.1 billion, and romance scams, which totaled $929 million. So data from the FTC overlaps with the FBI's. But the FBI collects reports on Internet based crimes, while the FTC focuses more broadly on consumer scams. So like the FBI, the FTC's consumer sentinel network data found a huge jump in reported fraud losses. In 2025, it was a record 15.9 billion, which was up from 12.5 billion in 2024. Goodness gracious. And it's based on about 3 million complaints consumers submitted to the agency last year. The FTC also found that older adults continued to bear the greatest financial burden. And in 2025, people age 50 and older reported 4.3 billion lost to fraud, compared to 2.3 billion among younger adults. So how are they getting them? Credit cards and payment apps were the most commonly used payment methods and scams reported to the FTC, accounting for 736.9 million in reported losses. And larger amounts were lost to criminals through bank transfers and cryptocurrency, which was $4 billion. In the cryptocurrency data shows losses reached, like I said, 11.3 billion. And scammers often use social media, fake investment platforms and promises of high returns and crypto investment scams and sometimes directing victims to send funds to crypto wallets or kiosks. And then of course there's the AI driven fraud with the FBI reported 893 million in losses tied to AI related scams, including voice cloning for family and stress calls and deep fakes in investment schemes. And older adults accounted for 352 million of those losses. And then of course, we have Imposter Scams Government and business impersonation scams continue to grow rapidly, remaining with widespread and costly results. So here's what you can do. Although fraud is often under reported, reporting incidents is critical. It helps law enforcement identify patterns, connect cases, and disrupt scams. So you report fraud immediately to your local police and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint center at ic3.gov or you can call their hotline at 877-908-3360. And that's a resource that offers guidance from trained specialists. So please do your best to verify unsolicited contacts independently, never send money or cryptocurrency under pressure, and use the two Factor Authentication and avoid clicking suspicious links. Although scams continue to rise, be aware, be vigilant and do timely reporting and that will help reduce the impact so now we're going to talk about a killer, Mackenzie Shurilla and what's going on right now in the news for her. Her attorneys are asking Ohio's highest court to review her case after her appeal was rejected for being filed one day late and a delay that argue stemmed from a leap year miscalculation. So In August of 2023, Sharilla was convicted of double murder in the deaths of her boyfriend Dominic Russo, who was 20 at that time, and their friend Davion Flanagan who was 19. And she slammed her Toyota Camry into a brick wall at nearly 100 miles per hour in July of 2022. And she did it without braking, like she didn't even try to put on the brakes. And this was according to the data recovered from the car. She was sentenced to two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life in prison with eligibility for parole in 15 years. Sherilla's previous attempts to have her case appealed have been denied and now her attorneys are asking the Ohio Supreme Court to review the case saying she could have been acquitted if the paperwork was filed on time. On April 27th of 2026, her attorneys filed an appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court saying there is medical evidence that Sharrilla suffered from a pre existing medical condition that could have caused her to black out while driving. Her attorney at the time did not adequately investigate the aspect of the case and did not try to secure expert testimony, the appeal claims. Her petition for post conviction relief, according to the trial court, was filed out of time, her attorneys wrote in April 27th of 2026 in a memo in response to jurisdiction on May 14th. They argued that Sharrilla miscalendared the date that her petition for post conviction relief was due and the trial transcripts were filed in her direct appeal on October 23rd of 2023, triggering the 365 day statutory clock to file the petition. Sharilla, they wrote, filed her petition on October 24th of 2024, the same day many of her exhibits were notarized. And because 2024 was a leap year, Sharilla's petition was late by one day. As a result, they argued, the trial court denied her petition as timely. On March 12th of 2026, Ohio's 8th District Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's decision denying Sharrilla's appeal. But the justices disagreed, saying Ohio law is clear that PCR petitions must be filed within 365 days after the trial transcript is filed in the Court of Appeals, not on the date's one year anniversary. On April 27th of 2026, her attorneys filed another appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court. And in a statement on May 27 regarding Charilla's case and her quest for appeal, the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office wrote, prosecutor Michael o', Malley, quote, believes without question that Mackenzie Shurilla is guilty of murder. We are confident that any court that reviews this case will come to the same conclusion. On April 27, 2026, her attorneys filed another appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court and the Ohio Supreme Court has not yet said whether or not it will consider her appeal. Goodness gracious. That's why you don't wait till the last minute. Why? Why wait? You're sitting there doing the work.

This next story is coming from California. Don't know what's going on in California, but I know these aren't the only two stories out of California about murders. But back to back, two adults and two children were found dead at a home in Los Angeles and an apparent murder suicide. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call in the north hills neighborhood around 8pm on Wednesday, May 27. First responders found four victims, two adults and two minors with gunshot wounds at the home. And police are investigating the case as a murder suicide and are not looking for any suspects. They have not released any further information about the victims such as age or gender. Along with police and firefighters, members of the mayor's all Volunteer Crisis Response Team were at the scene and the group provides emotional support, resources and trauma informed care during traumatic incidents. Neighbors have said that they believe the victims to all be family members. It's just shocking to be in our neighborhood something that drastic and devastating in the neighborhood. It's sad. Four people lost their lives today is what one of the neighbors said. And her name is Andrelle Turner. We really need to hone in on our moms and even dads just to make sure in the neighborhood people that you know that they're okay. Do they need any help? Do they need any assistance? Do they need any support? And that is the truth. Other neighbors expressed their shock, saying they never noticed any signs of any sort of domestic violence or problems in the home. And usually that's the case. It's all hidden. Again for this one it says text 9, 8, 8. If you are having mental health challenges, emotional distress, substance use problems or you just need to talk, there are resources out there. Please, please reach out and talk.

There's a video on this that I'm not going to play. But a Florida influencer known on social media as slightly off balance went viral after receiving a traffic citation. Her real name is Katie, but Katie is what they call an adaptive athlete who documents life with a limb difference. And she was pulled over for distracted driving on February 11th. And like I said, there's a video that was shared on social media of this happening. At the time, a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy claimed she was holding a phone with her right hand while driving along North Dixie Highway. Remember, I said she had a limb difference? Well, what that meant is that she does not have a right hand. So how is she holding a phone with her right hand? Despite that, she was given a wireless comm device handheld while driving. First offense under Florida Statute 316, 305.3A, with a civil penalty of $116. Now, days later, the influencer posted a video recapping the event on her TikTok. And of course, it went viral. And she said that she was pulled over for using her right hand, but then documented her inability to hold a phone with her right hand because she doesn't have a hand. Social media users urged her to fight the ticket. And in the months that follows, she posted her process to dispute the citation. And she then went to court in late April, pleaded not guilty, and shared an update on TikTok. She was scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, May 27. But on Tuesday, May 26, ahead of her court appearance, Katie uploaded the body camera footage she had requested, and she uploaded it to her Instagram and her TikTok. So in the video, the officer tells Katie why she was pulled over. But Katie simply lifts her right arm and says, obviously not, before laughing out loud and adding, so you want to just call this a day? But the officer insisted he saw her hold her device with her right hand and continued to ask whether she was using her phone while behind the wheel. He then asked her to put her hand to God and she threw up her right arm, prompting him to say the other hand to God. The officer went on to ask for her license and registration before writing the citation. This is all documented. The deputy requested the citation to be dismissed before the scheduled court hearing. And Katie shared in a Instagram Post on Wednesday, May 27 that it was dismissed due to lack of evidence. Yeah, the evidence was she was lacking her hand. So I'm going to end on that and I hope that y' all have a wonderful rest of your day. And I'm sure you will hear Woody's wonderful voice tomorrow on Saturday's episode. And who knows, hopefully you will hear both both of our voices tomorrow on Saturday's episode. As always, I thank each and every one of you for listening. Please continue to share us.
