China is turning regulation into a weapon, and American technology companies are squarely in the blast zone.

China has barred dealings with seven American entities, tightened export reviews for controlled drones and related components, suspended US-based factory inspection agencies, and launched a national-security investigation into imported office equipment.

None of these measures amounts to a full economic shutdown. That is exactly what makes them so effective.

By reviewing drone exports one shipment at a time, Beijing can decide which products move, which companies wait, and which industries absorb the uncertainty. The result is a pressure campaign that can be tightened or loosened without the shock of a blanket ban. Foreign companies are left trying to solve a political fight through compliance departments, licensing applications, and supply-chain contingency plans.

This episode also examines the accelerating security cycle connecting China, Japan, and Taiwan. Japan's latest defense white paper identifies China as its greatest strategic challenge and warns that the military balance around Taiwan is shifting rapidly in Beijing's favor. China responded with a formal protest, accused Tokyo of exaggerating the threat, and warned against the return of Japanese militarism.

That exchange matters because each government is using the other's actions to justify its own next move. Japan points to Chinese military activity as the reason it needs long-range strike capabilities, unmanned forces, and a stronger defense industry. Beijing then cites those investments as proof that Japan is becoming more aggressive. Around Taiwan, even routine military preparation can quickly be interpreted as hostile intent.

Beneath the political messaging, Taiwan's Han Kuang exercise is testing what could actually keep the island functioning during a blockade or missile attack. The ten-day live-force phase includes decentralized command, disrupted communications, convoy protection, mobile internet degradation, relocated weapons production, and cooperation with civilian industry. Taiwan is also requiring commanders to explain how they intend to carry out orders, an important test of whether units can continue operating when communications with senior leadership fail.

Japan is moving in a similar direction by connecting combat drones, civilian technology, software, manufacturing, and defense production. Deterrence is no longer measured only in ships, aircraft, and missiles. Testing facilities, component suppliers, communications networks, and factories capable of relocating under pressure are now part of the regional military equation.

Inside China, Beijing's anti-corruption campaign has reached another strategically sensitive sector. Former defense-industry regulator Zhang Jianhua received a ten-year prison sentence for bribery and influence peddling involving project approvals, investments, contracts, and more than 55 million yuan in payments. Because Zhang worked within the agency overseeing science, technology, and industry for national defense, the case could signal a broader effort to impose political discipline across China's defense-industrial system.

Finally, the semiconductor battle is producing an uncomfortable side effect for Washington. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have reportedly tested etching equipment made by China's AMEC at facilities in China as protection against tighter US restrictions. Samsung disputes part of that reporting, and no deployment decision has been confirmed. Still, the incentive is clear. When foreign chipmakers become uncertain about access to American equipment and servicing, Chinese alternatives become more attractive.

That creates a serious strategic question: Can US export controls preserve the technology gap without accelerating demand for the very Chinese suppliers Washington hopes to contain?

Today's China intelligence brief connects the dots between export controls, drone technology, Taiwan defense planning, Japan's military buildup, semiconductor competition, Chinese corruption investigations, and the growing use of commercial industry for national security.
