Chris
What's up, guys? Welcome to right about now. It's our weekly business news of the week here on November 1, 2024. One week to election day or I think or three days to election day. What is it? How whatever it is, it can't happen soon enough here as we enter November. There's all kind of sayings for November, guys. I know there's like multiple no shave November. No shave November. There's another one.
Sawyer
What's the other one?
Chris
I don't really want to.
Sawyer
I don't want to say.
Chris
I don't really want to partake in it if it's what I think it is, but nonetheless. Chris, what's up, brother?
Sawyer
What's up, bro? How you doing?
Chris
I'm good, man. Hopping from one to the next and having my tasty kombucha here. This morning. Sawyer said, no way I'm drinking kombucha. Mmm, Tasty. It's tasty. Brianna, what's up?
Brianna
I am doing great. I just read what the other November challenges, and I'm not saying it out loud.
Chris
You didn't know what Chris and I were talking about.
Brianna
I had no idea. I was like, what is it?
Chris
I'm like, I don't even want to say. I don't want to partake.
Brianna
You know, you guys can Google it.
Sawyer
It's a new challenge for your husband, Brianna.
Brianna
Nope.
Chris
Let's just say it's triple quick.
Sawyer
No.
Chris
Yeah. Triple ins. Is that right? Am I doing my. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brianna
That.
Chris
We're talking about the same thing. So we're gonna. We're gonna be like the anti triple here on right about now. When everybody else goes left, we go right.
Brianna
We don't Recommend the NNN challenge.
Chris
Yeah.
Sawyer
No, it's not an election year.
Chris
Oh, here we are into November. Got two months left. We're like, my wife is already starting to decorate for holidays for like Christmas. She decorates for Christmas before Thanksgiving. She's one of those.
Brianna
Gosh, no. December 1st is it. I can't take it much longer than one month.
Chris
Yeah, it's a thing. But. But she likes to get it done. I can't fault her for the fact that she likes to kind of get it over with and, and to enjoy it longer because it's a lot of work. I mean, there's a lot of. With all the shit. We have like seven Christmas trees.
Brianna
Seven.
Chris
Like some of them, the mini miniature, like, you know, five foot kind. But two or three of the big daddies. It's a thing.
Brianna
I was telling the team this morning that we have a house Christmas tree and then we have a to go Christmas tree. Because for the last three years we've done Airbnb for Christmas, like to go somewhere. So take the to go tree to the Airbnb and set it up. But then we also have like our main 30 day Christmas tree.
Chris
My dad developed a concept. My dad's a creative guy. He's like a MasterCard carpenter, general contractor. And he developed a concept that was kind of like a roll up tree that went flat against the wall. Like it was tall. It was a triangle like the tree and it had decorations on it, but it kind of. It rolled out on the wall. Yeah. It had lights on or whatever. On the back. Yeah. Flat on the back flush.
Sawyer
He was like, those for the corners too. That's awesome.
Chris
Yeah. He's like, this is a billion dollar idea. But I know execution is everything. And he never. But I, I thought I, I kind of laughed it when I was a kid because he's had this for like 30 years and. But now I don't know that that's a bad idea. Yeah, I like that idea for like single people especially. Easy or just. Yeah, you roll it out, baby.
Brianna
We are like, go cut down your Christmas tree in the national forest family. I don't know. I've been trying to figure out where in South Carolina. Yeah. Because we in California, we have the Tahoe national forest. It's like 10 bucks. Get a permit online and you go out and you cut down a tree.
Chris
Look at us jumping straight to Christmas here. Nicole. Be proud. We skipped right over Thanksgiving and Black Friday and all that stuff. Went straight to it. But, you know, I think, I think it's Anything to not talk about elections and everything else. So we'll see.
Brianna
We purposefully have a very limited amount of presidential coverage on the news today.
Chris
I know I barely have enough energy to talk about it, but the only reason. You know why I do have energy, because before I got this healthy kombucha, I had my ex, Exponent powers the podcast. Yeah. That's the only way you have energy. You look. It's been a long election year. Look, long season. This is the reason for the season is Exponent. That's what I'm talking about. Anyway, they are the official energy drink provider. They get us through the holidays. They get us through these episodes where we get tired of talking about, you know, two. Two candidates battling each other out here. And one of these is going to get the belt. We're not going to send this one. But one of them is. But who gets the belt every time is Exponent, the official energy drink of right about now? And Ryan offered, keeping me pumped up. I had six before the show. I'm ready. I'm kidding. Don't drink six. I did have a couple and I'm good to go. We appreciate Exponent, one of our newest sponsors here, powering right about now and keeping yours truly eyes wide open. Thanks to them. Go check them out. Exponent in drink. Exponent on instagram drinking drink exponent.com. that's exp. But they got the big X. X marks the spot for energy. Appreciate them. I got right to it.
Brianna
Yeah. Speaking of drinks, we have on the docket for the news today, Mountain Dew doing a rebrand. And I dropped a little image there for you guys to check it out. So their rebrand in 2009. And what we heard was that it kind of was a little bit childish and kind of aimed at like your kids age group, that demographic. And so they're trying to kind of do a little, like, vintage thing here with the 2025 rebrand. It's got the word mountain. It was abbreviated before. Now whole words back.
Chris
It's the old logo change for iconic brand. I could see him in the boardroom. All right. Sales are slumping a little bit. I was thinking about, you know, an influencer campaign. No, let's redo the logo. Magic. There it is. I do like, hey, go back to your roots. Go back to the. Hey, I still, like, do the. Do you know that was the tagline back in the day. And the previous logo is kind of like that Batman, like shattered. Bam.
Brianna
Yeah.
Chris
Now it's like back to the glowing for the mountains.
Brianna
I Like it? I think it's a vibe.
Chris
I think it's cool. It's just.
Sawyer
It reminds me of Irish Spring.
Chris
Yeah. Yeah, I do. I was going to say it feels familiar. Yeah.
Sawyer
And I don't know why that's, like jumping at me for some reason, but.
Chris
That should be a mashup. A brand mashup. Do the do while you're doing the do.
Sawyer
Like watching do the do in Ireland with our soup.
Chris
Hey, that's pretty good Iris accent from Chris.
Brianna
I think I know you had it in you.
Chris
I like that. Can you talk the whole episode that way?
Sawyer
I can try, but it would be a struggle.
Brianna
Yeah. So Irish Springs old packaging looked very similar, but they have since also rebranded.
Chris
Man.
Sawyer
I guess soap sales are slumming it, too.
Chris
Yeah.
Brianna
Yeah.
Chris
I will say of all the sodas, being an energy drink guy, being an exponent energy drink guy, you know, like, I gotta feel something. Of all the sodas that I actually feel like I feel the caffeine. Mountain Dew is one of them. Yeah. You drink like three diet Mountain Dews pretty good.
Brianna
I drink a Mountain Dew and I feel like the. I feel like when I'm drinking it and it's like that bright color, you know, it's all artificial. It makes me feel like I'm gonna get like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or something.
Chris
Neon. Yeah. What's so funny is yellow number five.
Brianna
Yeah, I'm good.
Chris
Oh, boy. And look, you know, that's what's so funny. They're going back to the mountains, which, you know, it kind of instills this natural, like, whatever it. Is there a more. Is there a more sort of artificial flavor?
Sawyer
Yeah. I'm like, did they switch to cane sugar and not corn syrup with the rebrand? Cause I'm thinking people are cutting down cause of health reasons, not the branding. Right.
Chris
Yeah.
Brianna
Yeah.
Chris
The mountain's not full of anybody. Maybe that Mountain Dew0. I don't know. But do the Dew. And I do think that. I can't help but think that, like, traditional soda's hurting a little bit with the fight against sugar and everything. I think that's why Coke zero, Coca Cola mean they're spitting buz on Coke Zero everywhere. If you see. I. I can't remember actually the last time I saw a Coke original commercial versus a zero Coke Zero commercial. I see a lot.
Sawyer
It is because it's funny you say this. My. In the package room this morning. Younger guy is probably 25. He was talking about, oh, yeah, I quit drinking regular soda. I used to trash diet soda now only drink diet because I'm trying to be healthier and I'm like, all right.
Brianna
Bro, drink some water.
Sawyer
That too.
Chris
Yeah, Yeah.
Brianna
I just can't put that sentence together. I'm trying to be healthier. So I switched to diet soda. Like, maybe switch to iced tea.
Sawyer
Baby steps.
Brianna
Yeah. Okay, okay. I'm not really a soda drinker. I'm a Lacroix girl through and through.
Chris
I can't. I gotta have a little sweetness in my. Like the Kroy doesn't have. It's just fizzy water with a flavor. I don't have.
Brianna
Water naturally.
Sawyer
Tell you what, Element tea that the electrolyte drinks, they just came out with a canned sparkling electrolyte drink. That's kind of been a good little soda replacement for me.
Chris
There you go.
Brianna
To try it.
Chris
I replaced my soda with soda and go. The Coke Zero. I posted that we talked about a couple weeks ago. Cherry Coke Zero. I don't really.
Sawyer
You replace your soda with an energy drink.
Chris
Yeah, that's true. That's true. Or kombucha.
Brianna
My thing is this. I would rather Ryan just tell everyone.
Sawyer
It'S a Bud Light. Having a Bud Light.
Chris
It's fuzzing. It's fizzing. It's not Bud Light. I swear. It's not out of the question that it could be, but it is not today.
Brianna
We did just refill the cake.
Chris
Yeah. That's not it, though.
Brianna
If I'm going to drink my calories, I'm going to drink them in a craft beer or a glass of wine.
Chris
Yeah, I agree. That's why I went to zero. Like zero has zero calories. I know it's on. I know that the chemicals in her own healthy. I've cut back. I don't need the lesson. However, if you're gonna drink a soda, I can't help but think that zero is better than none than a sugared one up. Like, they both have the chemicals that are nasty, but at least one doesn't have 180 calories and 4 tablespoons or like, what, a pile of sugar this high or something.
Brianna
Yeah.
Chris
So still, there's a reason to drink exponent. They got zero. No adaptogens. No. Or they have adaptogens, but no bad stuff. I'm staring at the can. They're getting bonus. You know, I love these guys, but they're getting bonus. Say because it fits in plant powered. Yes. They got none of the bad stuff. All the good stuff.
Brianna
Those things are amazing. I've been drinking one in the afternoon and I feel like I have gotten so much more productive. Like end of day two to four p.m. cranking stuff out.
Chris
I'm just getting this perfect to not bother Sawyer. Yes. I got the thumbs up here. We got perfect synergy here on the set and I don't want to disturb the Chi or Sawyer, so. Yeah, I agree. So enough, enough exponent. We love them. You know it. Go check them out. But here's the deal. Brands do this all the time and they think, all right, the logo change and it, it, it gives it a fresh little pop. It gives you some, some news. It's kind of more of a PR play. I don't think they're going to fool anybody into thinking this is truly natural. Mountain Dew, Mountain Spring. But you know, I do like the Chris's comparison to Irish Spring. That'd be a good brand mashup of sorts.
Brianna
And in addition, we have one more marketing news coming to you guys today, and that is Goldfish Crackers has done a limited edition where they release. It's the same, the same cracker goldfish as you know and love them, but they are called Chilean Sea Bass and it says their whole marketing campaign is adult sounding name, same goldfish taste.
Chris
So it's not actually flavored Chilean Sea Bass.
Brianna
It's just, it's just called Chilean Sea Bass. And they are sold out. They sold out like immediately.
Chris
That's.
Brianna
You can't even get them anymore.
Chris
I mean people will collect anything.
Sawyer
I was, that's what I was going to say. Must have some collectors or something.
Chris
Yeah. And then it's like, I mean, you're going to have that bag and of crackers that go stale.
Brianna
Like that tastes just like a regular.
Chris
Tastes like about 30 years ago when these came out. Then it's going to be on that show where they eat stuff, you know, on YouTube. Like they eat stuff that's like 50 years old or something. They open it up to see if it's any good. It's pretty. My kids watch that. I'm watching it. It's pretty fascinating. They got like one of those cake. You remember those old cake makers that little. You make bake little baked cake.
Brianna
Little Debbies. Like an Easy Bake Oven.
Chris
Easy Bake Oven. Yes. They were making one from like 1960. It didn't go over well.
Brianna
I had an Easy Bake Oven.
Chris
Easy. I'm sure you did.
Brianna
I did.
Chris
Little, Little baker.
Brianna
My very first job was being a baker's apprentice when I was 16.
Chris
Oh, did you wake and bake as a child?
Brianna
I plead the fifth.
Chris
Yeah.
Sawyer
That was Quick.
Chris
Chilean sea bass crackers. Look, this is another good PR play. I like it. I like that from marketing perspective, it's hard to get attention. You know, it's in today's world. This is a nice little attention play. I have no idea where they came up with Chilean sea bass. I was trying to get the play off like the name, and don't think there is one. It's just. It sounds very fancy. Next they're gonna have like escargot. Escargo crackers.
Brianna
I love that. It's just like cheddar flavor. Like the same old, same old. You've always gotten labeled Chilean.
Chris
I was hoping it was kind of like they actually tried to make the floor because there's been a lot of that too. These funky flavors of different things. But. Oh, well.
Brianna
Do you want to take us into basketball?
Chris
Oh, sure. You didn't even want to set it up.
Brianna
I mean, you felt I do, but I'm a little nervous. My basketball. I'm not up to my basketball speed.
Chris
Oh, yeah.
Brianna
Gatorade. Signing a new deal with Dukes. Basketball star Cooper Flag.
Chris
Yep, he's one of the highest rated recruits coming into this season playing for Duke. Shocker. The good get better. And so he's signing in Aldale with. With Gatorade. All these guys are signing deals. He's projected to be the overall first pick of the draft straight out of college so that they odds play one year. And you know, with the new nil deals, these players can get paid for their name, image and likeness, and it not be used to be sort of against the rules. They've finally come around on that. I think they did. I still think it's the wild, wild west a little bit. They don't have the regulations around it that they need to. It used to be, you knew like the $500 handshakes were happening behind the scenes and so that that's gone, which is good. It's now in front of the scenes. But you've got guys signing these huge deals before they, you know, even get to the pros. And I think people should look be able to profit on your own name and image. I mean, that's pretty much what influencer marketing is. But at the same time, there's this slippery slope where you've got different players on the team getting paid different amount, different deals. It can cause some turmoil sometimes between teams or has the potential to do that. I don't know that that's been proven yet. I do think an offensive lineman understands the quarterback like in college football might get a bigger deal just like they do in the pros, how rare their talent is. But I think you're seeing more and more of these deals even take place before these athletes make it to college so. Because I can tell you this before.
Brianna
They make it out of college. Yeah, yeah.
Chris
I mean I have the outline of a book called Raising a Brand because literally there's a strat, there's a strategy to this and I don't know if any of our kids will be pro athletes. Nash, our youngest, probably has the most potential just based on athleticism at his age. And I've already bought. I own every one of their own Instagram handles all their own Ur I did this probably 4 years ago like Nash offered.com Hudson offered.com Hudson at Hudson offered on Instagram, on TikTok, on like I own all I have all their usernames and their URLs already because you know, planning ahead not only because for for you know, athlete, you know, athletics, but for just personal brand sake to own these things because you never know when they get taken crazy.
Brianna
That's an asset that you should look into for your children ahead of time. I thought about that.
Chris
So for yourself too.
Sawyer
I didn't do that in college. I had to build a website on my name like a domain, like a personal brand. So.
Chris
Yep.
Brianna
Well there's 20 million Brianna Halls, so.
Chris
There'S only one true Chris Hansen and he's not on Dateline. You do have the old one.
Sawyer
I'm the new one.
Chris
Yeah, he's the newest one. He's not chasing the I do get.
Sawyer
Predators like probably twice a month. Someone's like oh, Chris Hansen, D.C. yeah, yeah bro, it's my uncle.
Chris
Yeah but Cooper flag that it's a pretty recognizable and memorable name but you'll be hearing a lot more of it. Good player, very rangy. I would say he's kind of like one of those six, eight kids that's shoots runs and does it all jumps well, does all well, dribbles well. Like not just like a big guy and not just a guard. So that's why he's likely a first round draft pick. And it I'm sure this is a seven figure deal already. So there's real money being thrown around with nil. And I think of it really back to just it's just it's influencer deals but they have their influence is driven by their athletic ability and the eyeballs because Cooper flags is on Duke's team. And think about the aware like how often does Duke get shown on television. And how often does he get shown on television? So how many impressions is that for his awareness? Because that's the way you think about these deals, is, no, he's not going to have a Gatorade logo on his. Not yet on his Duke jersey, but the more known he is, the richer this deal is for Gatorade. And so that's the way you have to think about it. And that's the way, you know, they signed these deals. Thinking about, okay, if a player is going to New Mexico State or they're going to Ohio State, who do you think is getting the bigger deal? Ohio State, bigger name, more impressions on television. More, More known, More known. And so the player combined with the, the school and then the personalities, and this is where, you know, like parents out there listening are like, you know, your kids are. It's not about just being showy, but being approachable to brands, being willing to do content and do things like being open to this stuff, because it's not natural. I mean, you think about even doing podcasts, some people, it takes getting in front of the camera and doing those kind of things. The faster that you can get comfortable with that, the bigger your deals will be. Because there's guys that get bigger deals that might have a little less following. They got huge personality. They have a true following. And not just sort of a, oh, I'm following him because he's, you know, a good player, but because of his personality and things like that. So things to think about, things that these brands think about when they sign the deals. And this guy's just at the top of the class. Something that's. I don't know what his personality is, but he's got it. He's just going to be out there so much. They're tying to it early because he ends up first round traffic. You know, he'll have. He'll have a pro deal and everything else.
Brianna
So it is interesting, I think that it's good for these players to benefit from all of their hard work before they have to, you know, to wait until they become a pro. Because I think that's kind of what's happened in the past, right? They've almost been penalized for not yet being at that level. And then if they do get injured or, you know, their career gets cut short, they never got to benefit from it the way that they should have.
Chris
Other than the free $300,000 scholarship that they get. But, you know, that's sort of. I mean, that's the one thing that started getting lost in all this is, and I agree with you, by the way, and the scholarship isn't in comparison to million dollar deals, so I get it. But at the same time, we're kind of losing the core of this, which, why you typically did it, which was to get the education, but now it's coming pretty much pro sports and pre pro sports colleges. We just don't, we don't have to hide about it anymore. Just is what it is.
Brianna
Yeah. College is a really interesting topic. We won't go down that rabbit hole. But the landscape is changing a lot.
Chris
Yes, it is.
Brianna
Well, we thought this was interesting. This morning on the radical team, we discovered that Robinhood, the app, you can now bet on who, which candidate you think will win the US Presidential election. So we put this. This is our only election coverage, but we just thought it was interesting that now you can place a monetary bet on who you think is going to win.
Chris
I'm at. I thought they'd had this stuff out there. They'd have the, I think poly market.
Sawyer
You could do it in Vegas. But Robin's rolling out on the app now.
Chris
Okay, nice. So 60. So it's essentially 63% chance Trump win 38. Man. Am I reading that data right?
Brianna
Yeah.
Chris
At least according to how they're doing it. I wonder if that's just purely if that's based on sentiment or polling or if that's just based on the bets being made.
Brianna
I think it's based on the bets being made on the app, but I'm not certain.
Chris
All right.
Brianna
Let'S see.
Chris
I mean, I'll. I kind of want to take Kamala for 38 cents, even though I, I've been very vocal about who I want to win, who I voted for. But it seems like it could be like good money, like. Yeah. Good spread. If it's as close as they say it is, that's. That's a good bet to make. Now, I tend to think it's might be going the other way and hope that it is, but just saying if you. Because look like that's what happens. People vote. You don't bet. Gamble with your heart.
Brianna
Yeah.
Chris
You gamble with your head. That's what happens with, like football stuff. Oh, yeah. I love that team. Or that they're definitely gonna win by that much. You're just totally going all heart, not like logic. So I don't know, is it good? Is it really trending that heavy to Trump in your mind? Chris?
Sawyer
I don't know, man. I don't know what to believe.
Chris
Yeah.
Sawyer
Because I, you Know if you based on social media, it's like, well, is the algorithm just showing me certain things? I do feel in the last week I have seen more criticism of her even I feel from the media.
Chris
Yeah.
Sawyer
So I could see and that. And let's be real, you still have a lot of people heavily swayed by the media. So I could see, you know that. But again, I don't really know what to believe.
Chris
If you go to a media outlet that's pro Kamala and it will make you think that she's absolutely winning. Like they're not showing. I go to a site that I. That I felt used to be pretty down the road. It might even have leaned Republican 10 years ago, but Drudge Report and God, it is so left now I can't barely even read it. I just go there sort of to, you know, at least get the other side. And they do have. When I get past the election stuff. Some of their other articles are pretty interesting. But God, they would have you believe that, you know, Trump's loss is mine, not going to win and everybody's bailing. But it's like that. But then like you said, Chris, I'm on social media and I know it's the algorithm and stuff like that. Everything else. And the more middle of the road media seems to be sort of throwing a little more darts at her. Yeah. So it's. Who the hell knows what to believe.
Sawyer
Well, and then you got like Trump on Joe Rogan, obviously that's huge. And I read this morning that her campaign said they would only do it if he went to them in an hour, maximum length.
Chris
Yeah.
Sawyer
So he said they're not going to do it. I mean, yeah, it's a podcast, but dude, Joe Rogan podcast is huge and a lot of people follow him heavily. So I wouldn't be surprised if that also could have swayed some folks or, you know, and I think it's fair to say you probably have a lot of people that listen to Rogan that aren't Trump people a little bit more free thinking. So maybe you had some, some of the listeners getting a different side of him that they're not exactly exposed to if they're used to just watching the mainstream media.
Chris
Yeah, I think if this was any other candidate on the right, it would be a landslide victory for sure. For what? The, for, for the economy and inflation and all that stuff. That would bury her like, and like.
Sawyer
Christy, no more Tulsi Gabber. Another female would make it really interesting if there was other female Republicans.
Chris
I think the only reason it might be. And I still think it might end up being a landslide comparatively. You know, like what's a landslide in an election? You're always going to have it fairly even because there's a lot of Democrats are never going to vote Republican. But it. I still think it might be a landslide, but it got. It would be an earthquake landslide if his name wasn't Trump.
Brianna
So this is super interesting in regards to this bet. It says more than $100 million has been legally wagered on the presidential race days out from election day.
Sawyer
Betters will bet on anything, man. That's all that my buddies that gamble, they will gamble on anything. They probably saw this this morning in a immediately jumped on Robin Hood and place bets. I'm not gonna lie, I was tempted, but Robinhood doesn't have a great reputation after the whole Gamestop.
Chris
Yeah.
Sawyer
You know, when they shut down trading and all that. So you could win your bet, but you might not get your money out with Robin Hood's reputation.
Brianna
So this is interesting. So according to NPR's Planet Money of the 15 presidential elections between 1884 and 1940, the betting market has correctly called the race in 11 of the 15. I like those.
Chris
Yeah, it's just. What is the betting market? Is it Robin Hood?
Brianna
Well, this is. This is the betting market.
Chris
Yeah.
Brianna
So there's call in the saloon. There's a. Yeah, there's a couple of them. Robin Hood and call she are the two big. The two big ones.
Chris
I got my six shooter and my bed in. All right, we'll see what happens.
Brianna
A couple weeks ago we had talked about the TikTok Chase bank glitch that was trending on TikTok. And now it's coming full circle as JP Morgan Chase starts suing the customers who allegedly stole funds in the ATM glitch scam that went viral.
Chris
Yeah, our YouTube video. And if you good time to plug the YouTube channel. We got one of the fastest growing business podcast YouTube channels. Get over there and check that out. Right about now, just search that on YouTube. But that was one of our biggest videos. Go figure. A couple thousand views and it was all about this. And we either fueled more of it or got people to stop. I'm not sure which one, but go figure. You're gonna get sued if you still. Oh man.
Brianna
Yeah.
Sawyer
Writing bad checks. Shocker.
Chris
Shocker. They go after you. It does.
Brianna
I was really surprised that two of the people that are getting sued are businesses in Florida that participated in this game.
Sawyer
That caught my eye too.
Chris
Yeah. Well, take much to open A business. I mean, you know, like.
Sawyer
Yeah, they probably formed an LLC and just wrote blank checks just to.
Chris
Yeah, some scam.
Sawyer
I would imagine. These people probably will no longer be able to banquet Chase.
Brianna
Yeah, well, they'll probably be in prison. This one person says Chase alleges that a man deposited a $335,000 counterfeit check resulting in a $290,000 debt after multiple withdrawals. So how is he going to pay that back?
Sawyer
Need a lawyer?
Chris
Yeah, I just can't believe that I get it because I've. I think I've seen this with my bank. You know, once you bank with them for a while they'll, they'll credit you before the checks. So I get it. And a few grand, three or four grand, five grand, something. But the fact that they allowed this on the $335,000 check or even down further in Article 2 to $140,000 checks.
Sawyer
It'S like kind of like Chase's fault at that point. Like dude, your software allows that?
Chris
Yeah, yeah. Bank error in your favor? Not really. But still Chase is suing to get the funds returned. Yes.
Brianna
Wild.
Chris
Wild.
Brianna
Also, how'd you get that much money out of the atm? I thought ATM had like a limit.
Chris
It does.
Sawyer
Well, they're probably walking in getting the.
Chris
Teller to give them then Rusty Tim, they might have doing like going to different ATMs. Thousand dollars a day or something for a week.
Sawyer
Maybe they're breaking off the bank teller cut too, you know. You know it runs deep.
Brianna
Speaking of deep. Deep in the tick tock industry. Tick Tock's founder has now become China's richest man. I am not going to attempt to pronounce his name, but he is the co founder of ByteDance. And he has now become China's wealthiest person with a net worth of 49.3 billion.
Chris
Is that Yang or Zhang? Zhang. Zhang. I know. I mean it's. I don't know if the Z and the H become a Y. I don't know why I think that. I think I might be making that up. But Zhang Yiming, you know, it's not that, that's too easy, but we'll find out. He's. He's a rich dude in China and the owner of Bytedance. Co founder of Bytedance. Excuse me. Go figure. 49.3 billion with a nearly 50% increase year over year. He's doing some good investing there. Doubling up, doubling up in a year. Essentially 43% increase. And if he sells, if they force the US ever felt forces them to Sell. It'll make a lot of bill, a lot of those bees. It's worth quite a bit. Is he limited to what he can spend it on and being in China, Communist China, does he have to share how much of that does he have to give the government a year?
Brianna
I just want to know, like, could.
Chris
They take his funds at any moment?
Sawyer
I mean, that's kind of great question.
Chris
Is it really, are you really a billionaire if you're in China and it's in Chinese bank accounts?
Brianna
Yeah.
Sawyer
I don't know if you want to be on that list in China.
Chris
I don't know either. Government's definitely in your pocket.
Brianna
It says that being a billionaire in China can be challenging.
Chris
I bet you think when a communist country might can just decide they want.
Brianna
To take your money and you can't criticize the Chinese government if you do have money because you will face political backlash. It says quite a few billionaires have left China and an additional 15,000 high net worth individuals are expected to leave China.
Chris
Let's just say if I was in China and I had that kind of money, I'd be offshoring, that is, however you can do it and planning my exit. So just saying.
Brianna
Well, for us normal people in America who are not billionaires. Billionaires, yeah. Sounds like. Job openings fell to 7.4 million, the lowest since January of 2021, indicating a slowdown in the labor market, especially in healthcare and government sectors.
Chris
I don't know why in those sectors, but it's not surprising. We've been hiring a few positions and I feel like the candidates have been better. I mean, I don't know if that's correlated at all, but I do think it's a different job market than it was a couple years ago. It just feels different when response rates, things like that, the people that seem to be in the market. Just my observation as a small business owner, but so it's not totally surprising. And I feel like some of the, it's like all the other economic metrics had to catch up to the job market at some point. Right. So I think there's some of that as well.
Brianna
Yep, totally. Well, hopefully everything after. Let's see, today is November 1st. We have three more days. I think we will see some changes in the economy based on the outcome of November 4th.
Chris
Yeah, it will be interesting. I mean it's going to be surface level, just sort of, I don't know, temperament reactions because no president getting elected on the fourth, no one, they don't take office till next year. And so it's all sort of become speculation. So emotional, emotional speculation. I could see bitcoin, if Trump gets.
Sawyer
Elected, going up and then kind of going back down.
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
Sawyer
So the stock market probably as well get a good pump and then it'll kind of chill out.
Chris
Yep. So I think a lot of those metrics, if Trump not. And this is just, it's not because I'm voting for Trump, but, but like, because he's new, I know he's already been president, but because it's a new candidate, new party coming in, which always brings sort of what is what everyone's sort of sentiment is like new energy, new things, whether true or untrue, ultimately, no matter what the policy, it's sort of that sentiment more than anything. It's sentiment's powerful in the market.
Brianna
Well, and I was having this conversation recently with somebody is. So we've been in four years of the current administration. If Kamala gets elected, we have four years of Kamala, which essentially is the same administration and then she could get reelected so we could have three four year terms of the same sentiment.
Chris
Oh, did I fall into my mic? I was just thinking about what you were saying.
Brianna
Yeah. All business owners everywhere are.
Chris
Yikes. Yeah. Yes.
Sawyer
12 more years.
Chris
Eight more years. Eight more.
Sawyer
Just one more decade, you guys. We'll be all right.
Chris
I just can't take the. I don't know, it's. Look, I've said this a lot of times. The president's going to get in my way of be, you know, pushing forward. That's the great thing about America. But I just don't know if I can handle some of the. And look, I get it on the other side, people say the same thing. Everybody has different strokes for different folks. But I'd like to keep my business taxes down. Yeah, it's good for everybody, you know. Oh, I think that's it for today. We appreciate everybody out there. Chris, any final words?
Sawyer
Appreciate you guys listening like. And subscribe.
Chris
Yes, Brianna.
Brianna
Go vote.
Chris
Go vote. Get out and vote, folks. It's your right as American.
Sawyer
Do it.

Podcast Summary: Right About Now with Ryan Alford Episode: "$100 Million on the Line: Americans Betting Big on the Presidential Election" Release Date: November 1, 2024
In this episode of Right About Now with Ryan Alford, the hosts delve into the intriguing intersection of big-money betting and the U.S. presidential election. Released just days before Election Day, the discussion weaves through various topics ranging from the dynamics of electoral betting markets to current marketing trends and significant business news. Hosted by Ryan Alford, alongside co-hosts Chris, Sawyer, and Brianna, the episode balances insightful analysis with lighthearted banter, staying true to the show's reputation for making listeners think while keeping them entertained.
The primary focus of this episode centers on the burgeoning trend of substantial financial wagers placed on the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. The conversation expands to include how platforms like Robinhood are facilitating these bets and the historical accuracy of betting markets in predicting election results. Additionally, the hosts explore recent marketing developments, such as Mountain Dew's rebranding efforts and Goldfish Crackers' limited edition launches. Business news segments cover topics like labor market trends, legal actions by JP Morgan Chase against ATM scam perpetrators, and insights into the wealth of TikTok's founder in China.
One of the standout segments discusses the phenomenon of Americans betting over $100 million on the presidential race. The hosts examine Robinhood's new feature that allows users to place monetary bets on election outcomes, raising questions about the reliability and implications of such practices.
They reference historical data from NPR's Planet Money, noting that betting markets have successfully predicted 11 out of 15 presidential races between 1884 and 1940, suggesting a level of reliability but also questioning the modern dynamics influenced by social media and platform algorithms.
The hosts discuss Mountain Dew's 2025 rebranding effort, which aims to shift away from a perceived childish image established in their 2009 rebrand. The new logo emphasizes a "back to roots" approach, incorporating full words instead of abbreviations and a more vintage aesthetic.
They debate whether this rebrand is a savvy PR move to refresh the brand's image amid declining sales or a superficial change that fails to address deeper consumer preferences.
Goldfish Crackers introduced a limited edition called "Chilean Sea Bass," featuring the same classic taste but branded with an adult-sounding name. The release quickly sold out, highlighting consumer fascination with novelty and premium-sounding products.
The hosts speculate on the marketing strategy behind this release, suggesting it's a clever attempt to rebrand a familiar product as more sophisticated without altering the actual flavor.
The episode touches on recent data indicating a slowdown in the labor market, with job openings dropping to 7.4 million—the lowest since January 2021. This trend is particularly noticeable in the healthcare and government sectors.
The hosts discuss the potential reasons behind this slowdown and its implications for small business owners and the broader economy.
A significant portion of the discussion highlights JP Morgan Chase's legal actions against individuals involved in an ATM glitch scam that led to unauthorized withdrawals exceeding $290,000. The hosts express disbelief over the scale of the scam and Chase's aggressive pursuit of restitution.
They analyze the vulnerabilities in banking systems that allowed such large-scale fraud and the potential repercussions for both the perpetrators and the banking industry.
The conversation shifts to the remarkable rise in wealth of TikTok's co-founder, Zhang Yiming, who has become China's richest individual with a net worth of $49.3 billion. The hosts debate the challenges of amassing such wealth in China’s political and economic landscape.
They ponder the limitations and governance issues faced by billionaires in China, including potential government interventions and the stability of personal wealth.
Throughout the episode, Right About Now with Ryan Alford provides a multifaceted look at how betting markets are intertwining with political processes, the evolving strategies of major brands in staying relevant, and the shifting dynamics within the labor and economic landscapes. The hosts emphasize the importance of understanding both consumer behavior and broader economic indicators to navigate the current business environment effectively.
This episode of Right About Now with Ryan Alford skillfully navigates through a variety of timely topics, offering listeners both depth and entertainment. By combining discussions on presidential election betting with current marketing strategies and significant business news, the hosts provide valuable insights for business owners, marketers, and enthusiasts alike. The blend of serious analysis with casual conversation ensures that the content is both informative and engaging, encouraging listeners to stay informed and think critically about the evolving business landscape.
