Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Hunter Pence, Matt Fazkurjian. A whole bunch of people. And it's the one night where you don't swing to make contact. You swing to make history. I'm interested to see what Bond says about this, actually. Anyway, it is all live from Citizens bank park in Philly.

Tate Frazier
Welcome back to Ringer Tailgate, the Wednesday edition of the show. I'm your host, Tate Frazier. We got a very fun show here, but first and foremost, let's say what's up to our guys. Van Lathan in studio. What up, man?
Van Lathan
Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo. How y' all doing, man? Ringer Tailgate is back.
Tate Frazier
Not gonna raise the roof quite yet.
Van Lathan
Well, here's the deal. Here's the deal. I saw something and I thought it was fair. We should. People say that, like, I sometimes jump the gun on raising the roof and that we should introduce everyone, then raise the roof. Because sometimes I raise the roof too quickly, and then we get into a segment and it's not, it's like, it's not great, you know?
Joel Anderson
Oh, well, I just get excited.
Tate Frazier
You know what I mean?
Van Lathan
I get excited to raise roof. So let's try it. We introduce everyone, then we raise the roof.
Tate Frazier
Right?
Joel Anderson
Okay.
Tate Frazier
All right, next up in the Idaho sweatshirt, I'm gonna ask you your favorite city in Idaho after this, but Joel Anderson. What up, man?
Joel Anderson
Yo, what's up, man? My favorite city in Idaho. I've only been to Moscow. I, I, I want to go to Boise. Moscow, is it Moscow, man? Damn, I fucked it up. I saw the Kibby Dome, the Kibbe Dome.
Tate Frazier
There you go.
Joel Anderson
Well, because you know people. I'm sure a lot of people know this, but maybe a lot don't, that the University of Idaho is 8 miles from Washington State. They're right next to each other.
Tate Frazier
Right over the border. That's right.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you can go right over there. So I just went over Coeur d'.
Tate Frazier
Alene. Really pretty city. That's where all the celebrities go to kind of get away from the world. So you ever want to see a celebrity? TMZ loves Quarter Lane.
Joel Anderson
I can't. I can't.
Van Lathan
I'm not a lot of people go there. They have that Sun Valley conference in Idaho where all the rich people go together and they have a fun time. You ever heard that song by Michael Jackson, Stranger in Moscow? You ever heard that one? Michael Jackson? Strange. Y' all never heard Michael Jackson Stranger in Moscow before. You never heard that?
Tate Frazier
Is he talking about Russia? Is he talking about,
Van Lathan
Like, a stranger in Moscow? You never heard that?
Tate Frazier
I'm gonna have to pull that up and listen to it.
Van Lathan
Hey, Mike got some. Mike got some. Some crazy hits that Mike got the hits we all know, but Mike got also the hits we don't all know.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, a little under the radar also. I think Michael Jackson's having a good week. BET Awards on Sunday. Jafar Jackson had a nice moment there, you know, that was nice.
Joel Anderson
Butterflies was dope, man. I feel like if somebody. Butterflies had done. Had done. Well, I guess somebody else did do Butterflies. Flow A Tree did Butterflies. Yeah, but, you know, I feel like people don't give Michael Jackson credit for making that song, though. It still was a really good song when he did it.
Tate Frazier
Well, he.
Joel Anderson
He.
Van Lathan
They did it first, right?
Joel Anderson
Did they do it first? Who did?
Van Lathan
But I think they did it first. And then maybe Michael Jackson covered that. I'm not sure, though. Okay, I'll be honest with you. Like, it's like, well, Marsha Ambroses. Okay, so here's the deal. Butterflies is a song by Americans. Oh, we gotta raise the roof. Raise the roof. We gotta raise that roof, bro. Butterflies is a song by American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson. It was written and composed by Andre Harris and Marsha Ambrosis, produced by Jackson Harris. It appears on his Titsuit album Invincible. So I think it came out as Mike and then I think Marcia redid it for Flow Tree or I have no clue what actually happened.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, I never thought to ask, like, who had it first? Like, how did that happen, you know?
Van Lathan
Yeah, Moscow.
Tate Frazier
All those songs get passed around. You know what I mean? Like, then eventually get a legend on it.
Van Lathan
Yeah, but this is deal, so. Because you know it. Michael at that point was working with a lot. A lot of. Like, Justin Timberlake's first album were songs that Pharrell and Chad, the Neptunes had hoped would go to Michael Jackson.
Tate Frazier
Chad.
Van Lathan
Yeah, they. The reason why they feel like Michael Jackson records, because some of them are. So I have to say this before we get into the show today. We got a lot to talk about. We're going to be more focused today. But this. This week is the week for Joel's dad that meet this week.
Tate Frazier
Oh, nice. So this is the week, July 4th.
Van Lathan
I asked Joel for his. His. His dad's address because Joel, they keep. Everybody's upset that this hasn't happened yet.
Joel Anderson
Well, the reason it came up is because you, on your show, you dissed. You dissed Donnie's dad, and then you said, oh, I'm gonna send him some barbecue. And then Donnie was like, why don't you send Joel's dad to barbecue first? So I kind of expected this might happen. Right?
Van Lathan
So. But you. But I hit you up. Be honest. I hit you up.
Joel Anderson
What are you gonna send?
Tate Frazier
Brisket barbecue.
Joel Anderson
What's the.
Van Lathan
It depends. I gotta figure out what place that I'm gonna get it from, you know what I'm saying? But I'm gonna make sure that this dad gets some heavy meat for the week.
Joel Anderson
I don't feel comfortable giving you his address. All right, bro.
Van Lathan
Joe, you gotta do it, bro. Because people are actually getting at me like I'm incapable of following through the something I said I was going to do.
Joel Anderson
It's been months now.
Van Lathan
It is. It has been months. But now you have to, like, I. I have to do this. I have to make good on this. I'm a man of my work. I have to be a man of my work. It's very important.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. I'm excited to see the delivery, the reaction. I hope we hopefully sends a video to you.
Joel Anderson
I don't know. You know, wait, why don't you wait? I'm going to fly him up here at the end of July. He's gonna be here, and then you can send the meat.
Tate Frazier
Oh, Joel wants some of the meat.
Van Lathan
Joe, you want the meat? You want you and your dad to share that meat? That's crazy. I don't know how y' all do it, bro. Hey, hold on, hold on. I got a new name for y'.
Joel Anderson
All.
Van Lathan
The Anderson Meat Boys. Like, we like. So you want. Okay, cool. That's cool.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. Look, I have no problem eating meat. No problem with me. My dad doesn't have problem eating meat. We'll be fine. You know what I'm saying? We still grown, you know?
Van Lathan
Oh, man.
Joel Anderson
Still.
Van Lathan
Okay, so let me ask you this. So what's the best barbecue in that area, then? What's the best barbecue in man. In the Maryland area?
Joel Anderson
And you know what? In. In. Oh, in the Maryland area.
Van Lathan
You know what?
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Tate Frazier
You said when he comes to your
Joel Anderson
house, 250 barbecue over in Riverdale Park. I go over there sometimes. I meet some friends for lunch or whatever, and that actually, it's Texas style barbecue. The place is packed every time you go in a. You cannot, like, you have to wait.
Van Lathan
It's good.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, man. This is really good, man. And I mean, again, my mom was like, well, did they have any black people back there cooking? And I was like, no, but it was a bunch of black people in line. And so I was like, so does that satisfy your standard? And it did. She really enjoyed the brisket.
Van Lathan
So it is mad white people that know how to barbecue, though. I like black barbecue better, but, like, it's mad white people. Barbecue is one of those things to where it's mad white people.
Tate Frazier
I think it's cultural on both sides. You know what I mean?
Van Lathan
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
See, the thought is, just say this. Well, I mean, my mom wanted to know more about cleanliness. No.
Van Lathan
Who would.
Joel Anderson
There's a group of people that she doesn't think can make barbecue, and she wanted to make sure that group of people wasn't the people preparing her barbecue.
Van Lathan
Also, she's a racist. So what? So if there's a specific group of people she doesn't want to barbecue for her, she's racist. Just drop it, dog. If any. Any other person that would say something like that, we have to call it out. No, call out your mom. It's fine.
Joel Anderson
Look, she's racist. Who?
Van Lathan
What?
Joel Anderson
Like, what?
Van Lathan
What?
Joel Anderson
Look, people.
Van Lathan
Wait, hold on, hold on.
Joel Anderson
I'm trying to think. So would it.
Van Lathan
Like.
Joel Anderson
Let's say you went to a. Would you eat at a. Did you eat at a Chinese restaurant? If. I'm sorry, I don't know you. I mean, you would not.
Van Lathan
Let's.
Joel Anderson
You know what I mean?
Tate Frazier
Don Cheeto in Russia.
Van Lathan
Wait, just wait a second, though. Okay, so look. But. But here's the thing, though.
Joel Anderson
I don't know how this.
Van Lathan
This is why. This is interesting. It's interesting that if.
Joel Anderson
If.
Van Lathan
If you're talking about the Asian community overall or like, whatever, what I would say about that is. This is what I would say.
Joel Anderson
Oh.
Van Lathan
Is what I have learned is that our Asian brothers and sisters, when they decide that they are going to commit
Joel Anderson
to a cuisine they're locked in, they
Van Lathan
start putting their foot in.
Tate Frazier
That Korean barbecue is incredible.
Van Lathan
I mean, look, Korean fried chicken. Are you nuts?
Joel Anderson
Korean fried. But. But I will say, apparently the Korean fried chicken thing is because of the brothers that went over there during the Korean War and they taught them how to fry chicken. That is the. That is the story that I've been telling. The etymology of the story, but actually, my mom wasn't concerned about Asian people making barbecue. Because actually, now that you mentioned it. Now, I'm sure that that happens in Texas because Texas and Houston in particular, is very diverse. I don't know if I've ever seen an Asian person working on the grill at a barbecue restaurant or being back there, man on the. I mean, have you.
Van Lathan
But what I do know is that, like, I think Korean barbecue, and there's a lot of different. Like, they kicking ass. Can I say something?
Joel Anderson
If you Asian in the barbecue game, hit us up, let us know.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Van Lathan
By the way, we've seen. I've seen, like, a lot of our Asian brothers and sisters that come over here and for America for the World cup, and they trying to taste the barbecue. And there are a couple places actually in Japan that are now doing the Texas barbecue and kind of stuff like that. It's going worldwide. I say this about that Korean fried chicken story. That story is either true and this beautiful example of cultural exchange, or it is literally the most devastatingly racist story that's ever been told. And I've heard that before. Because think about it. Because think about it. It's like other cults, other cultures, when they talk about the exchange, they talk about, oh, the. Like, people met and they exchanged algebra. Like, people met. They exchanged the printing press, the written word, all that stuff like that. They exchanged, like, geometry, and it's like the.
Tate Frazier
With Korean, they said, can you help us with the tickets?
Joel Anderson
Can you help us? You all seem like you'd be experts at that. Well, look, okay, so Wikipedia,
Van Lathan
they went there like, it's all about a fried chicken. I'm like, oh, all right, cool. Like, that's what we explained.
Joel Anderson
Okay.
Tate Frazier
It's a beautiful exchange.
Joel Anderson
U. S. Military presence after the Korean War introduced deep fried chicken as a popular Korean cuisine. Amazing. There's a couple of links to this. Now, apparently, they were fried chicken back as far as the 15th century, but obviously we're talking about.
Van Lathan
Yeah, I'll say. Don't. I'll tell y' all something Hollywood. Do me a favor. Don't make that movie, okay? Don't make that movie like Spike Lee joint. I'm just saying they're gonna make a movie, and the movie is gonna be. It's gonna be called Soul Food, but soul's gonna be spelled like soul. South Korea. See, that's how they do it. They're gonna make that, and they're gonna put somebody in it. Yeah, they're gonna put somebody, and it's gonna be about that. Say that. Don't make that.
Joel Anderson
You could make it a story about a romance, you know? What I'm saying, a brother comes over there, finds a bro, you know, a wife or whatever, they get married abroad. About to say abroad. You know what I'm saying? Wife. You know what I'm saying? I don't know what I was about to say. You were gonna go married somebody over in Philippines, and I had a Filipino cousin.
Van Lathan
That's awesome. See, that's the exchange that we want. What we want is more. Amari's is what we. Is what we want.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, one thing that's.
Van Lathan
That's the exchange that works, you know, let. You know, let us. Let us chickens. But, but, but I'll say that. Yeah. So, Joe, whatever.
Joel Anderson
Your mom, she actually.
Van Lathan
I mean, the contrary of what your mother.
Joel Anderson
I'm gonna say my mother didn't think that Mexicans could make the barbecue. Okay? So that's what it is. That's the thing. So she's. She's skeptical.
Tate Frazier
Hey, they just made it to the group of 16 in the world Cup.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, that's not gonna.
Tate Frazier
That's not gonna kill their vibe.
Joel Anderson
Oh, absolutely. And I mean, she has respect for their food. I mean, you know what I'm saying?
Van Lathan
And by the way, I'll say this. If I was Mexican and somebody like your mom, Stephen Miller Anderson,
Joel Anderson
She didn't say they couldn't come. She just said, I just would leave the restaurant.
Van Lathan
Oh, no, they definitely could come. It's a bunch of them motherfuckers. But it's your. But like, if I was Mexican and I heard that, yeah, I would say get the fuck out of here. Do you know how much food we got? That's bomb. We don't need to barbecue shit. Get off us all y'. All. Y' all want our tacos? Y' all want our berea. Y' all want
Joel Anderson
all that stuff.
Van Lathan
You want our rhythm, but you don't want our blues, man. You don't want. We going through. Like, your mom. Shouldn't she sit on her high horse as an American?
Tate Frazier
And look, you want a rhythm, not a.
Joel Anderson
Well, I mean, it's just like. It's the difference between going to. And like a little pit, you know, some place in Lulin, Texas, or whatever, you know what I mean? Which is where actually, I did go to City Market in Lulin, Texas. Shout that out, because that's really good barbecue.
Van Lathan
So what we gonna do? What we're gonna do is when you come back here, because LA is like, you know, we are very Mexican city. Black brown. Black love brown.
Joel Anderson
I love it, man. Absolutely.
Van Lathan
So we gonna. When we gonna come Back here and we gonna find some place where our Mexican brothers and sisters are barbecuing out there. And then we're gonna see. We're gonna put you to the test and see if you know your mother.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Oh, no, wait. I mean, this is what my mother believes, not me. Also, I'm just thinking, man, if you go down into South Texas, you get a little bit like, beyond Corpus Christi or whatever. Well, I bet they got.
Van Lathan
They got to be, right?
Tate Frazier
El Paso barbecue.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
I mean, they got to be, bro. They like you go down there because it's just too much. They got to be, man.
Joel Anderson
Oh, yeah.
Tate Frazier
El Paso's got good food, so.
Joel Anderson
Oh, man.
Van Lathan
You've been El Paso, too?
Tate Frazier
Yeah, driving out to la. I took two nights in El Paso.
Joel Anderson
El Paso is so dope. I spent a New Year's Eve there covering the sun.
Tate Frazier
Great Tex Mex down there. Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Oh, man. And I've been in the Sun Bowl Stadium.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. I mean, I didn't go inside. We just, like, drove by.
Joel Anderson
Beautiful El Paso. I mean, a very underrated city to hang out last.
Tate Frazier
That was the last blockbuster I ever went to back in 2015 in El Paso, Texas. Also, Chris Brown was on tour at the time at El Paso and I was, like, selling out stadiums. Yeah, he was.
Van Lathan
He stopped in El Paso. For real?
Tate Frazier
Yeah. Back then. I don't know, 2015. You can look it up. We're going to take a quick break here because we got a presenting sponsor. One big reaction. We got the Manning Passing Academy to get to. Before we get to that, couple housekeeping issues. Billy Gill. For all the Billy fans out there, he's not here. He's on a cruise. And Joel was trying to dox him by finding out what exact cruise that he was on.
Joel Anderson
It is weird with cruise line. I mean, he didn't say nothing about that. I mean, actually, he didn't tell us that he wasn't going to be doing the show until like yesterday. Right. That that was when he first broke.
Tate Frazier
We do have a. We have a document that has the dates marked on it. He had put. He was going to be on a cruise.
Joel Anderson
Where's that document? I don't have it.
Tate Frazier
I think we shared it months ago. But yeah, he had put it on there. So it was on the dock.
Joel Anderson
All right, my bad. I need to put my dates on there then. Damn.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Was there any specific reason why you wanted to know, like where they were going and stuff?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, just out of curiosity.
Van Lathan
Okay, that makes sense because I always. I do wonder with. Because I've seen some videos for. For some. Some cruisers. I know Billy and his family not on them. You know what I'm saying? Because it seems like, you know,
Tate Frazier
what kind of cruises.
Van Lathan
Some of these cruises. Carnival cruises. Some of these cruises. You know, it reminds me of cruises that might have happened forcefully back in the day, but.
Joel Anderson
Come on, man. Come on, dog. Don't do that. Hey, man,
Van Lathan
I follow Joe's limit.
Joel Anderson
Come on.
Tate Frazier
That broke Joel.
Van Lathan
Joe. Imagine that cruise,
Joel Anderson
man.
Van Lathan
Oh, man.
Joel Anderson
Actually, it's crazy because I just read something about this. Oh, man, I was about the Middle Passage. Yo. I was reading the 1619 Project Children's book to my son. Okay, Sorry. Any cup. And it does cover. Is it called a White Line children's book?
Tate Frazier
It's crazy.
Joel Anderson
Is it the white one, bro?
Van Lathan
Bro? What the bro? What are you talking about?
Joel Anderson
Oh, man, he fell asleep in that hole, too. He sure did. Oh, yeah. It was a White lion, man. The first ship that brought the slaves over in 1619. We got that far. I've read the whole book to him before, but he wanted, you know, I mean, sometimes.
Van Lathan
Wait, wait, man. Shout out to your little man, bro. You mean to tell me kids, it's other kids like that. Before I go to sleep, he's in class.
Tate Frazier
What does your daddy.
Joel Anderson
I didn't buy that book. Somebody bought it for us. I mean. I mean, mostly just so I. Mostly I read him the Cat in the Hat. He loves the cat, right?
Van Lathan
Okay, good, bro.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, that checks out.
Joel Anderson
Caps for sale. You know what I'm saying? But yeah, but I mean, 69. Sometimes he just wants a little bit, you know? I can just tell he wants a
Tate Frazier
little bit of a dad. Can we go deeper than the rhyming scheme of doctor.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, well, some book. There's a book called the Smart Cookie that is kind of.
Van Lathan
What's that one about? Anyway. But, but, but Bill. But Billy. So I just. To your point is. What I was saying is it would be interesting to know what type of cruise Billy and his family choose.
Tate Frazier
I think he's on a Disney cruise.
Van Lathan
Oh, it is. Okay. So, yeah, Disney will weed out the Disney.
Joel Anderson
Wait, I don't. I'm surprised people want to do. I thought after the pandemic, we were all done with. Done with the cruise, man.
Tate Frazier
I think after the poop cruise, right? Yeah, I think the poop cruise was the end. Everyone was like, wait a second. They can just leave us? Like basically, yeah, bro. It's like out in the ocean and not take care of us.
Joel Anderson
Nothing about a cruise sounds appealing to me, Doug.
Tate Frazier
A lot of people disappear on cruises too. Also, there's maritime law. So it's like. There's actually no laws.
Joel Anderson
Oh, is that true?
Tate Frazier
Place.
Van Lathan
I didn't know that. Is that true?
Tate Frazier
Yeah. So you're on a boat. When you're on a boat, like at sea or whatever, there's like no actual real laws.
Joel Anderson
Wait a minute. Hold that camp.
Van Lathan
So, yeah, because you.
Tate Frazier
You.
Van Lathan
What the.
Tate Frazier
You mean.
Van Lathan
So you mean to tell me you can King Vaughn the whole cruise and can't nobody do nothing?
Tate Frazier
Come on, man. But look, I know this because at Myrtle beach, they take these boats, they take you 60 miles offshore, and then you can gamble, right? It's illegal to gamble there. But if you're out 60 miles, then you have your own laws. That's the only reason I know this. And yeah, so when you're on a cruise, you're kind of.
Joel Anderson
Let me see what the maritime law.
Van Lathan
Let me see what the maritime law. Because if that's true, then I'mma put this in the script. Yeah. Cuz.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, because it's a specialized body of domestic and international law. What are some of the.
Tate Frazier
I'm sure they're agreed upon laws like. No, you know. Murder. No. You know what I mean? But I think that's pretty. It's pretty lawless.
Joel Anderson
Maritime crops addresses piracy, smuggling.
Van Lathan
It seemed like they're only concerned about John Lee feet and all the people like that.
Tate Frazier
They're worried about the pirates more than anything.
Joel Anderson
That's funny, man.
Tate Frazier
So I don't think there's any legal recourse when you're on the poop cruise unless against the actual. But whatever you sign to go on the cruise, basically, you're basically saying, hey, that could happen to me.
Joel Anderson
So I don't know, I feel like if, you know, maritime law to reach out to us, because I want a little bit more clear. I'm not, I mean, I'm not gonna go on the cruise.
Tate Frazier
No, I'm not an expert on maritime law. I'm just saying cruises are. It's a questionable decision.
Van Lathan
I feel like there's probably got to be some sort of justice.
Tate Frazier
I think there is agreed upon justice. I'm just saying. A little bit more lawless than you would say.
Joel Anderson
Okay, well, hold on. Let me just. I, I gotta look up one thing and see, because this is actually a real problem online. I can't. You know what? I'm just Googling something. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Maritime sexual assault law encompasses federal statutes and admiralty regulations, you know. Well, I'm just saying that's, I mean, that's, you know, real problem on a boat, I'm sure.
Van Lathan
Drinking, you know, Disney Cruise, though. So y' all enjoy yourselves.
Tate Frazier
Have a nice cruise.
Joel Anderson
Hey, yeah, nice, man. I mean, grown ups go on Disney cruise cruises too, man. You know, saying, trying to get it in.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, there's a lot of grownups that go to Disney without kids.
Joel Anderson
I know a girl who skipped a whole, she skipped her whole newspaper internship to go be like, literally like Goofy at Disney World.
Tate Frazier
To work is good.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, to work. Yeah. Like, because you could get it in the costume. Yeah. And like I said, maybe you could work different costumes over the, over the summer or whatever, but that seems like
Tate Frazier
a pretty good get. You got Goofy's kitchen.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. Like, I mean, she, she left the Denton Record Chronicle high and dry. They were looking for her that day, and I was like, oh, man. She decided to go.
Van Lathan
I mean, I, I. With what you're talking about. That's a good job. Like, going around being Goofy, hanging out, having fun.
Joel Anderson
Hot than a Though man in that suit, I'm sure.
Tate Frazier
Definitely hot. I've seen a lot of those pictures of the guys, like, smoking cigarettes, like, with the head.
Joel Anderson
It don't look glorious.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. But shout out to Goofy. Let's get to it. One big reaction. Manning Passing Academy. I don't start with you, Van. Like, how much did you see from the Manning Passing Academy? Like, how much was this, like, an actual storyline? Because I've seen a lot of podcasts talking about it, but I don't know how much we really got, other than a couple of clips. But what stood out to you?
Van Lathan
Really, the only thing that stood out for me is, like, the buzz and everything that. What I heard and saw was who Obviously, Arch is going to be a story. So it's three stories. It was Arch who did well and then who did poorly. It looks like Arch kind of split the baby a little bit. It looks like you see Arch, and obviously Arch is very talented, but he's running into people who expect him to be Peyton Manning or really even Eli Manning, because Eli Manning was probably the more physically gifted of those two brothers. And he's. That's the thing that Arch is, to me, still dealing with, is that if you watch the way he threw, if you watch the way he moved around, that he was good. But people are expecting, wow. And it doesn't seem like as if Arch has wowed anyone yet, and they're still holding that against him.
Tate Frazier
I do think there's, like, an algorithm issue with Arch Manning. Cause, like, on one app, I saw Arch Manning throwing bombs. You know what I mean? It's like, man, how great does Arch look during the Manning passing academy? Then the other, you know, I get on Instagram and I'm scrolling and I don't know, maybe it's like some hater DNA that's in there, but I get like, Arch Manning overthrowing out routes and he looks terrible. So, like, I don't know, depending on what videos you saw of Arch Manning, you could have a totally different perception of how he did and what he looked like.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, no, I mean, so I grinded some tape. You know, I watched a lot of those quarterbacks. I watched a lot of the quarterbacks throw there. And yeah, Arch did have the worst throw that I saw. Like, he missed about the most of any guy that threw a ball that day.
Van Lathan
It looked like you're talking about one specific rep, though.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, one rep. There's one.
Van Lathan
But they don't get that many.
Tate Frazier
We've all seen that video.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, apparently they don't get that many reps, though. You know what I'm saying?
Tate Frazier
There's a lot of guys. They gotta.
Joel Anderson
They gotta rotate through a lot of guys. So. And I think. I'm guessing this was the Friday night competition where everybody comes out also. They were booing Arch and I at this thing, like. And I'm like, what. What did Arch do to Louisiana? I don't understand. Nobody ever thought he was going to.
Tate Frazier
He didn't go to lsu.
Van Lathan
Well, I mean, nobody was. The Mannings don't. With LSU like that. The Manning, the. The. We haven't gotten any Manny's. The Mannings aren't Ole Miss.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Like, they're not really. They. Not really from. They. They. They From New Orleans, but for real, that's a culturally Mississippi group of people. Very much so. You know, I mean, their dad, all of that stuff. I get it. They're from new, all of that, but they're not. Nobody expects anybody named Manning to go suit up or like have anything to do with Louisiana Too much.
Joel Anderson
Well, that sounds like people showed up to Thibodeau and to boo him. That was kind of crazy. So I, I thought that was interesting. But it just sort of reminds you about the expectations that follow that guy. Because that's the way everybody got interested in the Manning passing academy to read anything else because it's like, what did Arch look like? What did Arch look like? And he looked okay. Like I, like, like you said, like I saw when I was grinding tape, you know, he also threw deep.
Tate Frazier
Did you have actual tape or you just grinding like the video clips that we've all seen?
Joel Anderson
No, I was, I watched about a 20 minute video of the quarterbacks dropping back on YouTube today.
Tate Frazier
You know, so real grinding.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, real grind. Real tape grind. Yeah. Now again, not that many reps and I didn't get every. Like, I didn't see Kevin Jennings, I didn't get to see jks anything like that. But you know, Arch looked all right, but the dude, I gotta say something about this guy. I don't know if it's going to work out, but this dude, he probably is not going to be at Mississippi State much longer if he lives under his talent. Camario, Antonio Laquan Taylor, 6 foot 4, 2 30. He dropped back and threw a comeback route. And the announcer who had never said anything like, he'd just say, who's coming up? He'd be like, up next, you know, Connor Wegman, he never said anything else. When Camario threw the ball, you hear him say, oh, wow. And then, good lord. And so, and I mean, man, look, he started the last two games last year, didn't, you know, lost. But that's sort of a tough spot for a true freshman. I mean, I don't know, you know, what else he has around him in Mississippi State, but I looked at that dude, I was like, God damn, man. Like he might have something to him.
Van Lathan
Yeah, yeah, he made some plays last year. He's got all the athleticism. Kind of reminds you a little bit of in terms of the total package of like a guy like Sellers at South Carolina and what they could be if the upside was ever realized.
Joel Anderson
Would, would you rather this? I mean, you all haven't seen him play yet. Would you rather have Kamario Taylor or Bryce Underwood?
Van Lathan
I've seen Camario Taylor play a little bit. Like, okay, he doesn't have a ton of tape, but like, yeah, I mean, you know, the thing about Bryce Underwood, man, is we're really going to be able to see this year what Bryce Underwood can do. Well, hold on. I can't say that at all. We're still yet to see somebody just let Bryce Underwood rip. Yeah, it would have been awesome to see him at a situation like this where it's all about the passing. Bryce Underwood, his talent is so much about the package and all of that stuff. I can't say which guy I would rather have because I honestly, even though there's. I've seen so much more of Bryce Underwood than I see to this guy. And you'd have to take Bryce Underwood. It seems kind of silly to even talk about, but there's so much more from Bryce Underwood that you want to see.
Joel Anderson
Yep.
Tate Frazier
And especially with the arm talent.
Van Lathan
With the arm talent. So much more that you want to see. And the question is, will you get a chance to see it? And if they aren't cutting him loose, is there a reason why?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, yeah. That's kind of what I wanted. Yeah. I think this is the year that he'll get a chance. And, you know, they got the. The Utah offensive coordinator who worked with Devon Dampier. Devon Dampier looked pretty good, but also, as I mentioned over and over throughout the season, I didn't think he could throw very well. So. And that. That ultimately limited them. That was the ceiling on that team. And so hopefully Bryce looks a little bit better. But that Camario guy, like, I hadn't seen a lot of him. I didn't. I don't know why I didn't get to see the Egg bowl last year. So I missed his first start. But, I mean, that dude looks physically impressive in a crazy way. So I hope, I hope, I hope he has a little bit more success this year.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. Another story, another guy that stood out, C.J. carr for Notre Dame.
Van Lathan
Yeah.
Tate Frazier
I listened to McShay and I listened to Minch, and they were just. I mean, McShay was giving glowing reviews about C.J. carr. Does that change your perception of Notre Dame a little bit?
Joel Anderson
Van?
Van Lathan
Yeah, because they lost a lot. Right? They. They. They lost two studs. Right. But if, in fact. What'd you say?
Joel Anderson
Huh? Two studs.
Van Lathan
They lost two studs.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Just get ready for this meat. But no, so, I mean, if he's ready, I mean, that's what Notre Dame has been like looking for and asking for Riley Leonard approximated like a really gritty Notre Dame quarterback. Didn't go out there and win you games, but like.
Tate Frazier
But he was limited.
Van Lathan
He was limited. Right. But as far as a guy that can like execute an offense or win a game from the pocket, if Notre Dame can do that, I think with the defense and the discipline and the way that they play physically, everywhere else, that people are going to look for no Damon, go pretty deep in the playoffs. And so, I mean, people were wondering that about Carr and if he's that, then look out.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I heard someone say that we had been talking about the wrong Nepo kid the whole time. You know, Arch Manning, obviously the headliner, but C.J. carr, Lloyd Carr's grandson, also another kid that has some, you know, football familial ties that are pretty strong. And he looks really good. I mean, he looked good against Miami in that first game last year. I mean, he popped to me from the start and I think, think he's only going to get better. So the fact that he was a standout in that sense and everybody was talking about him, I think that's really encouraging for Notre Dame.
Joel Anderson
Oh, yeah, absolutely. They could. I mean, the thing is, it's, it is interesting because Notre Dame has had some very celebrated quarterbacks, but you can't really look and say they've had great ones. Like, I'm, I'm going back. So people remember the. And Brady Quinn, Jimmy Kaiser, Malik Zaire. Yeah. Jimmy Clausen. Brady Quinn, Carlisle Holiday. Jarius Jackson. Remember Jarius Jackson? Ron Palace. Now you get the Rick Meyer and Rick Meyer was cold. And then Tony Rice. Tony Rice is my favorite, you know, but I mean, obviously that was about running more than anything else. So they have not had, you know, the nobody that ever turned out to be the guy guy. Like, once they got past, you know, the, the day of the NFL draft, they never developed in anything else. So it'll be nice if that ends up being who CJ Carr is. And if it is. I mean, man. Yeah, look, Marcus Freeman, man, I, I really thought Notre Dame was going to miss Brian Kelly. I really did. And it seems like they only got better.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, they got more palatable as a, as kind of a group. I mean, Freeman's very likable. I mean, he's on magazine covers. Like, he kind of sells himself very well. And our most tough coach. Yeah. Most attractive coach here on ringer tailgate. So. Yeah. Very fascinating. You mentioned Brady Quinn and that leads me to the next conversation point. This is fascinating. And obviously, always a talking point when it comes to quarterbacks. John Matier has gotten ripped. He is super swole, and that was one of the things with Brady Quinn. I remember when he was coming out, they said he got too swole, like, for his throwing. Like he was too strong and it hurt his mechanics. John Mateer looks like one of the strongest quarterbacks since, like a Tim Tebow or something. I mean, this guy's absolutely jacked. Van, your thoughts on swole Matier, is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Van Lathan
Well, it. To me, this tells me that he's going to run a lot. That he's going to. Because, remember, this was a stupid fucking statement. I'm sorry, guys. To me, this tells me that he's going to run a lot. The guy fucking runs all the time. He loves to run. Expert analysis.
Tate Frazier
I think he's more prepared to run now.
Van Lathan
I think that's what I'm trying to say. What I'm trying to say is that there were some bumps and bruises last year. And what he's probably trying to do is shield himself from a lot of the injury that he subjected himself to by toting the rock so much. Like at points last year, he was their running game. He was their running game, right? He was and he was. These runs were physical. He wasn't running to the sideline and then stepping out. He was taking shots. He was really moving the ball on the ground, and people wanted him to do a little bit less of that, particularly after he got banged up a little bit. But it doesn't seem like he's going to do that. And if I was thinking about the reason why he would be jacked like this, it would be able to put some muscle on so he could absorb the punishment down there in the SEC a little bit better.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I mean, it checks out. That's what it looks like, Joel. But are you worried about the throwing? If he's that strong, is that actually a real complaint?
Joel Anderson
I mean, you know, the thing is, he hasn't really. He's been productive, but he's not been accurate. You know what I mean?
Tate Frazier
Like, I think, oh, yeah, he had the hand injury last year and he.
Joel Anderson
I mean, again, he was the Heisman front runner up until the point that he got hurt at that. At the point of the year. So, yeah, I could see him. I could see that, the bulking up to protect yourself. But the. The thing that works against this is that I've never seen a great quarterback look like that before.
Tate Frazier
Who is the most swole Quarterback to be. I think Cam Newton would be my.
Joel Anderson
But Cam Newton looks like a small forward or like a defensive. Like a real.
Van Lathan
He was pretty swole. He was pretty swole. But even when he. Even when he threw the ball, like, he didn't have the most natural throwing motion. Even though, you know, Cam Newton could really throw the football. But like, I don't know. The swole is when they get too swole. It normally doesn't work out. Like, it normally doesn't work out.
Tate Frazier
Was too swole.
Joel Anderson
I mean, I'm glad people can admit that couldn't throw now, man. I mean, that would have fight. That was for like three to four years.
Van Lathan
Who was saying that he couldn't. Who's saying that? He was like a master from the pocket. Who's saying that? Oh, Skip Bayless. I'll tell you, I'm a. I'm gonna shoot a little bell to Skip Bayless a little bit. He wasn't necessarily saying that Tim Tebow was this maestro from the pocket. What he was saying was that Tim Tebow was this consummate winner that will competitor. I'm gonna be real with you. He was saying that. And it was looking crazy because espn, while he was playing, would play these videos of Tebow, like throwing on air at practice. Yeah, and these passes look crazy, bro. But then. But then you would go out and Tebow for a time would be like, I don't know, 7 or 21 for 79 yards. But they will win that fucking game.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, that playoff.
Van Lathan
And you would be like, yo, what the fuck is going on in that Tim Tebow situation? And of course, it didn't last.
Joel Anderson
I mean, the chibo thing when I first was like, oh, this is a bad motherfucker. It was actually at LSU in Baton Rouge during his Heisman Trophy season, I think, because I was like, God damn, he's taking all this punishment. And was still effective. They won that game. And I was like, oh, yeah, Tim Tebow could play for me. But I just. I don't know, man.
Van Lathan
In college, he made throws.
Joel Anderson
He was cold.
Van Lathan
In college. No, in college. In college football, we had this long.
Tate Frazier
He had the weapons too. I mean, he did.
Van Lathan
He did. Percy Harvin, all of the guys like,
Tate Frazier
like with the pounce.
Van Lathan
Great tight ends that never got in any trouble.
Joel Anderson
He.
Van Lathan
He had guys. Great guys. At the same time, though, he was making throws. We were talking about on Twitter a couple of days ago, someone was asking, you know, why do people like college football and why do people like pro football? And I responded, if you love the sport, you probably love pro football. If you love culture, then you probably love college football. Right? And so then that created a whole downstream argument on which product is better on the field between pro football and college football. If there is one player that is exemplifies the fact that the NFL is a way better product, it's Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow might have been the best college football player we've ever seen. He wasn't. But
Tate Frazier
I mean, resume wise, he could be up.
Van Lathan
Yeah, he's in that. He's. He's. Joe, he's in that argument. Joe, Joe, come on, champ.
Tate Frazier
Heisman Trophy.
Van Lathan
So. So Tim Tebow is not in the conversation of greatest college football player the of all time.
Joel Anderson
Well, that's what y' all said a second ago. So that's what I'm being skeptical at. If you're telling me, yeah, he's a great college football player and he's an icon in Florida.
Tate Frazier
Then Joel said he likes Pavia better.
Joel Anderson
I don't know, man. Pavi was bad. You'll go see Tim Tebow winning New Mexico State. I mean, I haven't seen it yet. Like, I mean, if you win 10 games in New Mexico State, in Vanderbilt, you are a legend to me. I know how bad Jojo.
Van Lathan
Joe, can we, can we stay focused? Tim Tebow just, just so you know, two time BCS national champion, right? I mean, okay, BCS national championship game MVP Heisentron. He was, he was first team all American.07. He did have something to do with it. He just wasn't.
Tate Frazier
They brought him in the goal line.
Van Lathan
Brought him in the goal land. Yeah, I was there.
Joel Anderson
I saw it diminished the work of that black man, you know?
Van Lathan
Shout out to Chris Lee. Chris League is the man. Shout out to. Shout. Shout out to Chris Leap. Remember Ron Zook right before, right before, like I Love Rex Gross 2007 First Team All Americans considers All American 2007 Second Team All American 2009 Two time male SEC male athlete of the year. Like first team AP All American all time all American in 2025.
Joel Anderson
Get the out of here. They really do have him on that team
Van Lathan
in college, bro. Tim Tebow's college career is pretty amazing. I want to hear this dog. I want to, I want to hear. Well, I wanna, I want to hear this, bro. Like you're telling me that Tim Tebow is not one of the greatest college players of all time.
Joel Anderson
Oh, he is. But they. This list has him is the greatest. He's first team all. First team all time quarterback. I That's just. I mean, I. I guess if you add up the accomplishment and you credit him with the second national championship, even though he was a bit player on the first one, I guess. But if you asking me who the I was going to take and who was the best quarterback out of them in college, I'm talking about Vince Young. You know what I'm saying?
Van Lathan
I would take over Vince Young. I would take Cam Newton. I would take Cam Newton over Vince.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I think I would take Cam. I think Cam was the best quarterback I've ever watched. I mean, I. I've never.
Van Lathan
The best quarterback I've ever seen weapons, despite all the weapons and stuff like that. The best college quarterback I've ever seen playing like Joe Burrow played perfect football.
Tate Frazier
Perfect football.
Van Lathan
He was perfect. Perfect. But like, you know, I. I will say that like, you know, he had two dogs, man. We had Thaddeus Moss, man, we had. Claire was a lair, man. We were some Tigers dog. So you. So you do have to kind of keep that in the back of your mind when you're talking about it. If you're comparing him him to Cam Newton, if you're comparing him to Tim Tebow, if you're comparing him to this Young, that Vince Young team also was just like a stack team during the national championship game, but just like Cam Newton also.
Tate Frazier
Johnny Manzo has to be in a conversation too. Johnny.
Joel Anderson
I mean, he was a very good college.
Van Lathan
He was really great. No, no, he was really great.
Tate Frazier
Anything like that. That for not. Not the second year because it was kind of like a little bit like he was losing the power. But that first year I was like,
Van Lathan
what the hell N. He was doing his thing. He was doing his thing. The only thing is defense.
Joel Anderson
When that what he did that time.
Tate Frazier
Never get over that.
Joel Anderson
Right?
Van Lathan
I mean, it's phenomenal. But like what I would say with him though is that seemed more individual. I mean they were good teams, but that seemed more individual. The other players that we're talking about, they took their team to team heights. You're talking about national championship with Cam Newton, with Tim Tebow, with Vince Young, with.
Tate Frazier
They won the Cotton bowl that first year. That was good.
Van Lathan
No, no, no. I'm not saying that they didn't have great. Hey, hey, hey. He never with LSU though. He never with. He never.
Tate Frazier
He never.
Van Lathan
He never over us.
Tate Frazier
I think Johnny is at least conversation.
Joel Anderson
Max Dugan won the Davey O' Brien Award in 2022. I had no idea.
Van Lathan
So anyway, to that point though, there's no way you don't even know. See what I'm saying? See what I'm saying? Make sure you leave that in the podcast. Make sure you leave that in the podcast. You don't even know. Nah, dog. Make sure you leave that, because you don't even know your own bro. You don't. You don't know your. You don't know your own bro.
Joel Anderson
You didn't know that this was on the thing.
Van Lathan
You don't know how to say this.
Tate Frazier
At least he has an Idaho shirt.
Van Lathan
Yeah, bro, like this. This. This is one of his guys, bro. He doesn't know who the guy is. He doesn't know. He has no clue who the guy is. He's no nice. He didn't know that the guy made the team. He doesn't know how to say the guy's name. If I came on this right now and. And called, okay, it said, odel, Odell Beckham Jr. People would look at me and they'll be like, you ain't no real tiger.
Joel Anderson
This happened to me the other day when I was talking to Josh, the governor from Pennsylvania. And I know that I've been to Reading, Pennsylvania before. I know it. But I called it reading because I read it as reading for some reason. I don't understand.
Tate Frazier
Well, you were reading when you were saying it, so maybe I was reading.
Joel Anderson
I mean, I know I got cte, you know what I'm saying? So I understand that that's, you know, probably what's at play here. I'll just. Also, I'm tired sometimes. Go on. But I'm sorry, I. I thought I knew how to say the name, but, you know.
Tate Frazier
Did you call him Dugan the entire.
Joel Anderson
You know, the thing is, though, I never had. There was never a point that I ever had to say his whole name. I didn't call it Max. Now, I know.
Van Lathan
I heard you never heard that either, because you weren't watching them games. Ain't nobody, anyway. Nobody watching this year.
Joel Anderson
Oh, you know what? You didn't watch the national semifinal 2022 when we beat Michigan?
Van Lathan
No, I did watch it. I thought that was a fantastic win. Yeah, I knew what would happen. I knew what would happen.
Joel Anderson
I know that LSU ain't played in that game since TCU has, so that's.
Van Lathan
I know that. We win.
Joel Anderson
Okay.
Van Lathan
Oh, anyway, but back to the Manning passing academy real quick. You know, Arch mixed bag. Did anybody, like, ruin their reputation at the main passing academy? Like, was there anybody there that's like, oh, they all look good, or did everybody cat throw the ball pretty well?
Tate Frazier
I Think it's hard for anybody to really. Other than. The only person that I know that has actually hurt their reputation was Johnny Menzel by not going.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
While sleeping in. Yeah.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, Sleeping in. But I don't think there's any of those stories. I mean, most of it is, like, PR press, you know, press. I haven't seen anything.
Joel Anderson
We got to go to that next year. Because I saw, like, Todd McShade there and Pete Thamill at ESPN, and I was like, yo, that's a good time to talk to all those people. They're just being. You know, they're just there.
Tate Frazier
You know, everyone's guard is down. Everyone's, like, kind of chummy and hanging out.
Joel Anderson
We could go up, talk to Cupper, Peyton, Eli, whatever, You know what I'm saying? So I think that next year.
Tate Frazier
Did you just call Cooper?
Van Lathan
He did. On purpose. Joel, don't take the bait. You think that he doesn't know who that is? Don't take the bait. He's trying. Let me tell you what. Let me tell you what. He's trying to do this. I know he's a good gaslighter in this relationship, man. Shout out to this.
Joel Anderson
Hold on.
Van Lathan
Because. Because. Because what? What he just did. What he just did is very, very. It takes a lot of technical skill to be this type of gaslighter. So he comes back, he pronounces that name wrong.
Tate Frazier
Wrong.
Van Lathan
He does it on purpose. And the reason why he does it on purpose is because if he pronounces that name wrong on purpose, then the earlier name that he pronounced wrong on
Tate Frazier
purpose, now it just seems like a thing.
Van Lathan
No, it just seems like it's something that he does.
Tate Frazier
He does it for that.
Van Lathan
The fact. So the fact that he didn't know that the guy had accomplished something and he didn't know how to guys his name. It's no longer an indictment on Joel. What it is now is just something.
Joel Anderson
No, listen, listen.
Van Lathan
That you do do. It's like you come in. You come in every single day and you take a shower. Why? Because when your girl sees you come in and take a shower before you give her a hug, you'd be like, I take showers all the time. Right. You know what I'm saying? You take shower because you like to be clean, not because you washing off the biracials that you've been.
Joel Anderson
Come on, man. What are you doing now? What are you doing? What are you doing? What's happening?
Van Lathan
What?
Tate Frazier
Yeah, you're setting the standard. That's what it is.
Van Lathan
D. Ray Davis.
Joel Anderson
I'M the clean. I'm the cleanest. I'm the cleanest person I know. Let me tell you something, though, about what happened there. So in Shreveport, there's an area that's now called mlk, but they used to call it Co Road. Copper Road is spelled Cooper Road. And so that's what went through my head when I read it, because also, we're talking about Louisiana. And so I just was like, oh, yeah, Cupper. But, yeah, Cooperman. Yeah, I got it.
Tate Frazier
You know, you were saying, like, you're doing the actual. This is a. This is a Christobel all over again. You're saying that you're doing that Somebody.
Van Lathan
Even. That's a bit.
Joel Anderson
Somebody said. I was right about that.
Van Lathan
I actually did. I did hear somebody say that. Like, they were Spanish, you know, in the. In the Cuban languages, in the culture. Yeah, he's a Cuban. He's Cuban.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Crystal, first of all. So. And that they say it that way. So there was some retribution or some. For you right there.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Tate Frazier
Copper, if you're in Louisiana, in that specific town that named Cooper Bro, Streetport,
Joel Anderson
Couple Road, Shout Out.
Tate Frazier
Where do they pronounce Dugan? Is the next question. We'll figure that out at some point.
Joel Anderson
I mean, that. That, you know, look, you know, again, I didn't have a lot of calls to say his last name. I appreciate his service, but I will say earlier in his career, I didn't want him out there. And I know that Jalen Rager. I remember Jalen would be running routes. Jalen Rager, the best athlete TCU had posted. Ladanian Tomlinson, like the. Was outstanding and he just get around, but we couldn't use him because Max Duggan couldn't get him the ball. Okay. So anyway. But I'm glad that he turned it around and he was a good quarterback for us.
Tate Frazier
Well, they had QJ also on the outside. Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Oh, man. Yeah. Quentin, man, that's what. Shout out. We've had some. We had some. Some dogs out there, man. For real?
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I. I went out to the Chargers facility the other day, saw him out there. You did? Yeah, I forgot. I should have brought it up. You know, TCU horn.
Joel Anderson
Oh, man. I'm thinking you went to San Diego. I'm just. Oh, you just went down the street. Okay.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. It's an El Segundo. It's right near me.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. Okay. I don't know where El Segundo is, but, you know.
Van Lathan
Hey, Tate, you try to. You trying to. You trying to throw the baseball Friday?
Tate Frazier
I'm I'm. I'm out this week.
Joel Anderson
That's. That's the Fourth of July. Isn't that a holiday?
Tate Frazier
I'm back.
Van Lathan
Saturday is 4th of July.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. Yeah.
Tate Frazier
I gotta fly back to the family in North Carolina.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, Tate's coming out to North Carolina, man. He's coming to the east coast, man.
Van Lathan
I might throw. My mom's in town. I might throw the football with my. I'll throw. Throw the baseball with my mom. Like, just whip the baseball in her head.
Joel Anderson
You say your mom couldn't catch balls?
Van Lathan
Huh?
Joel Anderson
Okay.
Tate Frazier
Oh,
Van Lathan
watch.
Tate Frazier
What the.
Van Lathan
I have to get in that joke.
Joel Anderson
Okay. Yeah. You know what I'm saying?
Van Lathan
But she can, though. She can, though.
Tate Frazier
It was a David Copperfield. That's her crush.
Van Lathan
She liked David Copperfield, Obviously, my dad. But she also. She's had sex with men, so. Yeah, she's caught balls before. Has your mom had sex with men?
Joel Anderson
I mean, obviously I'm here.
Van Lathan
How many men do you think? What do you think? Your mom's body.
Joel Anderson
I don't think about it. I don't think about it, to be honest. My mom got married when she was 19 years old.
Van Lathan
So you're saying she didn't catch a lot of bodies? Well, how old was your mom when she got married, Tate?
Tate Frazier
24.
Van Lathan
So she was out there?
Joel Anderson
No, 24 ain't out there because it's 24 ain't out there in white world because you. They would. Were your mom and your. And. And dad dating in college, too? Did they start in college?
Tate Frazier
They got together in college.
Joel Anderson
Okay, this is what I'm saying. So they were together probably, what, five years before they got married?
Tate Frazier
Yeah. Then they had my brother when they were 27, and then I was 31. Something like that.
Van Lathan
Wow. Okay. So, like, my parents. My mom was 24, like, the same age when she met my dad.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, there you go.
Van Lathan
So. Yeah. Okay.
Joel Anderson
That's not.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
That's not enough. That's not a lot of time for people that are that age.
Van Lathan
Well, I mean, it depends on, like. Oh, what your mom was like in high school. I can find out, so.
Joel Anderson
Oh. Oh, my mom was beautiful. I mean, she was a cheerleader. I know.
Van Lathan
What I'm saying is I can find out just. Just using some of the stuff I've learned at tmz, obviously, you know, I can find out, like.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. I will say my mom was very impressed when Van explained how he would figure out if Ben Carson and, you know, was having a little rendezvous, like, how he would. She was like, that was some good tmz. Info that Van was getting.
Van Lathan
Joel knows. Like, Joel. It's funny. If you listen to the show enough, you see that Joel and I come from two different. Like, Joel knows how to work a story. Like, Joel puts in the legwork. You ever see, like, Lois Lane goes
Tate Frazier
to Ben Carson's house?
Van Lathan
Yeah. Knocks on the door like, Joe. Like Lord's Lane goes up to Perry White and goes, perry, Perry. I need to go to Alaska for two days to investigate this guy, this mysterious man who's helping people out in Alaska. Like, we had none of that. Was nobody getting sent nowhere. So you have to work it all from. Like, you have to use digital resources and make phone calls.
Joel Anderson
Oh, I think it's when Van talks about how he works the tmz, I think it's fascinating because that's me, too. I think people undersell how difficult difficult that is. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, people just think the tmz. And maybe this changed after the Michael Jackson announcement or whatever, but I felt like they just, I was like, yo, man, like, still scrounging up information, getting people to talk that might not normally talk. It's not easy no matter how you go about doing it, man.
Tate Frazier
So, yeah, and having contacts and, like, places that, you know what I mean? Like, all that is, like, showing up,
Joel Anderson
being, being out, being reporters that leave the house, man. And that's. It's not the, the fault of everybody, because I know the business has changed, and you probably got to be chained to your desk producing copy or whatever, but the, the, the story is outside, man. You got to go outside to do that. So that's. I would love knocking on people's houses. And I'm saying, I was thinking somebody was telling me about Clarence Thomas, man. And I was like, man, I, I, I really could call his mama, man. Just see how she doing. You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
Van Lathan
See what's up with. I mean, you used it for the story, so.
Joel Anderson
I did. I did.
Van Lathan
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
I was nice to her when I was there. She. I know she enjoyed having me over. I know she did. She was excited. Yeah.
Tate Frazier
That's sweet. Let's get to just, you know, piggybacking off the Manning camp talk. We got ratings from college football. 27 that just came out. And I got the top 10 quarterbacks here. Everybody is above 90 in the game other than one guy in the top 10, and that's Swole Matier. John Mateer is at 89. And then I'll read off the list from there. You guys stop Me if there's anyone that stands out to you. Noah Fafida from Arizona, Sam Levitt, LSU. Darian Mensa, Miami. Arch Manning is at number six at a 91. CJ Carr, Notre Dame. Jaden Mayava is at number four. Trinidad Chambla. Number three, Julian say in number two. And number one is Oregon's very own, his own rating, 95, Dante Moore. So that's the top 10 according to EA College Football. 27. Is there anybody that's missing, Van, you see that list?
Van Lathan
No. I will say this. Actually there is somebody that's missing. I wonder what DJ Lagways rating is going to be on the game. I'll tell you why.
Tate Frazier
Or Lenora Sellers.
Van Lathan
Right, Lenora Sellers. When you. I'll tell you guys something right now. Man, I love this football game. I love it. It is very, very frustrating on the game sometimes to go against a blue chip, highly rated quarterback. Just like it is in actual, in college football. Like in actual college football. You see these guys make plays they should not make. They make throws, the crazy throws. You can't even when you get clean hits on them, you can't get them down. And Lagway, Lagway and Milroe used to give me conniptions, drive me nuts on that game. Milro used to drive me nuts on that football game. You cannot tackle these guys. And they were making crazy throws. And over time I bet that like Lagways rating has changed. But it'll be interesting to see what his rating on the game would be right now.
Tate Frazier
He said he was depressed last year and that he's in a much better headspace now that he's at Baylor. So we should see, I would hope a bounce back.
Joel Anderson
Nothing much fun about that year in Florida, you know what I mean?
Van Lathan
It's a terrible year.
Tate Frazier
The injured going into the year.
Van Lathan
Going into the year, all of the talk around him, he was looked to save a coach's job basically. Yeah, it was all on that young man to like bail out the. The coach of the team. So all this pressure with absolutely no structure around him. It just. I'm hoping for a bounce back for DJ Lagway.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I'm with you. I think that's a good shout out there. Top 10 offenses, I'll start at 10. Oklahoma is at 10. Missour nine. Ole Miss, Notre Dame, LSU at number six there with Lane Kiffin back in the fold. Miami number five, Texas number four. Indiana number three. Oregon. And Ohio State is at number one. Just thinking of Indiana there. Number three, Josh Hoover. He's on that list, top 10 quarterbacks at some point.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, could be. I mean, the one thing that I was surprised about. Where's usc? I mean, again, no, no disrespect to EA Sports. I would love to get one of the games, you know what I'm saying? But all the. They get. All their starters are returning on the offensive line. They've got an NFL caliber quarterback, two really good running backs, and Waymond Jordan and King Miller. And I mean, they're replacing, you know, Makai Lemon and other dude that was there that went to the league. Jacoby Lane is.
Tate Frazier
Jacoby Lane.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tate Frazier
Jacoby.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, Jacoby. So, I mean, but I. One thing I never really worry about at USC is if they're going to be able to find receivers, you know, so I'm just kind of surprised because, I mean, Oklahoma, man, I mean, that's a lot of. A lot of wishing going on there because they could not run the ball last year and their quarterback is. We've got questions about what kind of development's going to be in Missouri. I mean, I just. That's got to be.
Van Lathan
What.
Joel Anderson
What is going on? Like, that's got to be SEC bias. We don't know what Austin Simmons is like yet, you know.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's a lot of belief in Simmons being able to kind of be what Lane Kiffin wanted him to be originally. Right. That's a lot of, like you said, a little bit of wishing there.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. So. But yeah, man, I would love.
Van Lathan
Senegal just scored, by the way. Senegal's up one. Oh, they play in Belgium. And boy, would. Would it be awesome if the Africans could be. Man, do you.
Tate Frazier
I mean, by the way, the knockout stage has been all upsets, really. Like Paraguay against, you know, Germany. That was insane. Netherlands losing to Morocco is insane. South Africa took Canada to the ropes, you know what I mean? They could have easily won that game. So, yeah, a lot of upsets. Not good for the U.S. by the way, because, like, everyone's acting like they're going to win no matter what against Bosnia. I'm worried about the upset. Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. I mean, yeah, the one thing, you know, with all the racism going on in the world, you know what I've never really seen, though, anybody root really hard against the African soccer team. You know, have you ever been anywhere and seen somebody be like, nah, Nigeria something. You never see that. And I'm just like, oh, people know not to do that with the African teams. And it's really nice.
Tate Frazier
I'm with you. I think Most people root for him, but you almost feel like it's kind of. Almost disrespectful because it's, like, charitable in a way. You know what I mean?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, I guess.
Tate Frazier
Like, Nigeria is a huge country with, like, one of the biggest cities in the world. Yeah.
Joel Anderson
No, I mean, they said. I think there was something. And I don't hold myself at a. Of soccer.
Van Lathan
I'm. I'm trying to figure out whether or not this is the essence or not. I'm saying that, like, it's like. It's like your rule for black people is charity. Take the essence.
Tate Frazier
I'm saying, like, respect that. They actually good. Like, Morocco was good in the last World cup, and everyone's shocked by Morocco. It's like, Morocco's good, you know?
Joel Anderson
You know, it's interesting, too, because I think it's like. I feel like even racists are like, well, I'm good, then. Black people in Africa. Africa. But it's like, when they're like, oh, man, they on Norway, Belgium, whatever, they get. They get frustrated about that because it's just like, see, we're losing our Western culture. But in Africa, they like, oh, yeah, that's where y' all could be right now.
Van Lathan
Yeah, that's your spot. Be good as soccer over there. Like, it's. It's. But if you guys. I'm sure that you probably read this. You probably read the story of King Leopold II to your kid, I think, in the Free Congo state. I'm sure you probably read that to them. You know, 10 million Africans did. That's the kind of stuff that y' all read
Tate Frazier
Marcus Garvey's autobiography, right?
Van Lathan
So. But. But. But yeah, if. If it's. You know, if they were to. If the Africans were to beat the. The. How is it Belgium's Belgish.
Tate Frazier
Belgians.
Van Lathan
Belgians. If they were to beat the Belgians, that would be. That would be phenomenal. I will. I've been loving the World Cup. The only thing I didn't like about the World cup was, like, on my flight back this morning, I flew in from New York this morning on my flight back. There was a. There was a family, and it was the worst family ever to fly with. I've never seen anything like it before. They all had different obsessions. The younger kids were obsessed with the tablets, and they were playing that tablets without the headphones.
Joel Anderson
Okay. Oh, man.
Van Lathan
The father was obsessed with the World Cup. Everybody was a noise maker. The older son was obsessed with the Lakers. So the sun was going crazy because the Lakers Got Walter cast, like. Got Walker Kessler, the. I think the Congo versus Who played this morning.
Tate Frazier
I think the Lakers might be the new essence, by the way.
Van Lathan
The Lakers are the essence, man.
Joel Anderson
The Lakers, the LA Celtics. You know what I'm saying?
Van Lathan
Everybody on the team looks like a John Wick villain. The Lakers are the essence, man. I don't know what the. Is happening. Palinka, what are you doing, dog? What is going on, bro? And everybody was going crazy, but the World cup, bro, is bringing people together. I would like to address something real quick. I said that I hope that the World cup was every year. Did you see this on Twitter?
Joel Anderson
Oh, yeah. Because you. You. I mean, you were talking crazy to people on Twitter, by the way, so.
Van Lathan
Yeah, no, I wasn't.
Joel Anderson
You. Yeah, okay, I did.
Van Lathan
I was defending myself.
Tate Frazier
DNA coming out.
Van Lathan
So, I mean, I've been on that for years. Joel just goes further. Joe just challenges people to fights.
Tate Frazier
Y' all. Just keeps the thread going.
Van Lathan
Yeah, Joel just keeps. Joel threatens people. I don't threaten people. So I say, yo, man, you. You're blocked. Joel goes, yo, you. And if you got something to say about it, I'm like, yo, what this shit?
Tate Frazier
Meet me at Whole Foods.
Van Lathan
But do you guys think that it's wrong for me to say so? The tweet was, you know, I wish that the World cup could be played every year. I love all the peoples of the world. I like people seeing him happy and seeing them enjoy. And everybody can be stupid fat American boy when these. Nothing. The only thing that makes me super patriotic is American competitive team sports internationally. And when people dis. American. Americans. So, like, if during the. You during the Olympics, I'm like, yeah, usa. Usa. Usa. World cup. Usa. Usa. Usa. But, like, in wars, I don't really root force, but like, in. In like, in. In like. Because we always start in the wars now with somebody who can't really with us, bro. Like the US So. So when y'. All. When you. When you somewhere and when you somewhere and your homeboy is picking on somebody and you like, yo, you know what? I hope he beat your ass, bro.
Tate Frazier
Even though it's your home, you deserve it.
Van Lathan
Yeah. You know what? You like, I hope he beat your ass. You know what? No, go ahead and fight. Stop wolfing. Go ahead and fight. Like, whoop his. I hope he beats his. I hope he beat your ass. Even the you love. Because you know that. You know that all he likes to do is pick on people that are smaller and weaker than him. That's kind of how I feel. About the US foreign policy right now. I digress.
Joel Anderson
Okay.
Van Lathan
I'm saying is that in this situation, it really turned me into an uber patriot. Watching people go, you fat dumb American, stay out of the World Cup.
Tate Frazier
We're hosting the.
Van Lathan
You think you talking to who the. Like, don't.
Tate Frazier
Hey, Barbecue. Hey.
Van Lathan
Who the you think you talking to? We'll that flag in your picture. Like, who the who you.
Joel Anderson
You don't talk.
Van Lathan
What? Don't make me get on my now. Like, who are you talking to? You talking to me? I know you're not talking to me because we could send a delta force in there and have your whole in about five hours.
Joel Anderson
I know.
Van Lathan
Like, don't. Like, don't. I know you're not talking to me. That dumb American. You better get get the out you like Mickey Mouse. Don't, don't, don't. Don't with me now.
Joel Anderson
Wow. This dude has the. The Palestine flag in there. And he. But he also said guess his nationality. L A L, M A, O. Wow.
Van Lathan
Oh, but I told him. So I came back to him and I was like, hey, I'm gonna remember this. And then I said I just let you know because he. He like a performer type guy. I said, I'll remember this. So I'm gonna pop up. I'm gonna over you. And then he came back and he was like, my bad og. So shout out to him.
Tate Frazier
He hit you with the og.
Van Lathan
He's probably being. He's probably being cynical but like. Or like facetious or sarcastic or whatever. But I'm saying that actually brought the American out of me. Like, don't, don't.
Tate Frazier
Don't act like exceptionalism.
Van Lathan
Yeah, yeah. Don't act like you don't know what it is now. Like we. You know. You know what I'm saying? Don't, don't. Don't act like you don't know what it is. Like we. Let me criticize my you state. Don't you don't criticize this. Don't act like you don't know what it is, man.
Tate Frazier
I understand where coming from how you bring people together.
Van Lathan
I understand what you coming from. At the same time, I can call somebody and have a tomahawk parked in your front. Don't. Don't with me.
Joel Anderson
Now you talking a lot of. We got ran up out of Iran. Like they fled us over.
Van Lathan
But we don't know. We don't.
Joel Anderson
We don't know what kind of. We don't know what kind of squad.
Van Lathan
Hey.
Joel Anderson
You know what I'm saying? I'm just saying, don't make me send
Van Lathan
the Nimitz back over there, because if it's time to get busy, we can get busy. No, I'm just. But, you know, anyway, I don't like that dumb American. That hurt a little bit, you calling me. I criticize America. You don't like. I'm.
Tate Frazier
It's kind of like you can talk about your family, but, yeah, someone else can't talk about your family.
Van Lathan
Dumb fat American. I am a dumb. Oh, brother. The got 3.6 million impressions. Like, people were going crazy.
Joel Anderson
Damn. Okay, man.
Van Lathan
They were really mad that. By the way, my entire point was not about that we should logistically get together and do the entire tournament every year. My point was that it's so awesome and amazing to see world cultures come together. And you only really get that during the World cup, particularly right now. It's been really amazing to see. And I would like to see that all the time. And somebody said, well, go ahead. My bad, Joe.
Joel Anderson
No, go. No, no, I'm sorry, man, go ahead.
Van Lathan
No, I'm saying somebody said we should have Christmas every single month. We really should have Christmas every month. Also, if we had Christmas every month, would people are nice to children, nice to the less fortunate people. When we have goodwill towards men, when we're with our families, more like we make precious memories. That would be awesome if we had. Yeah, we sit down and throw the baseball and all of that. It would be. It would be. It really would be. Remember Tate family? Remember Tate family had three different Carolina. No, well, no, it's two trees.
Joel Anderson
Two trees. Two trees.
Van Lathan
That's awesome.
Joel Anderson
That's a lot of work, bro.
Van Lathan
That's a lot of work, everybody.
Joel Anderson
That's a lot of work. Yeah, I mean, look, the thing is, and I'm not no big soccer guy, but, man, you know, some of those little, like, regional tournaments, like the Copa de America, man, I see that was one of them events, low key. I was like, man, you know, it's all of, you know, South America and playing all their little countries, man. And that was hype. Like, it just looked great. I was like, man, a little dismissive
Tate Frazier
to say all their little countries.
Van Lathan
See, I see that's how you sound. American. You.
Joel Anderson
No, no, that.
Van Lathan
American. Fat, fat, stupid ranch eating American.
Joel Anderson
I mean, everybody.
Tate Frazier
I love the ranch, though.
Joel Anderson
Everybody's fat now. I remember reading something about Europe and like, they. They're having. They're. They're catching up in levels of obesity to us, too. So, I mean, what are they talking about?
Tate Frazier
Yeah, but all the food is processed and everything's making us fat.
Van Lathan
Not as much. Theirs is here. Look, I get. I get all these things.
Joel Anderson
Well, yeah, I mean, because, yeah, we don't walk either. You know what I'm saying? But all I.
Van Lathan
All I said was. All I said was, I feel like we should kick it more and it would be awesome if we could do it. Every year everybody was talking about the. Well, their tournaments. Every year they got the Copa America. Everything that Joe was just talking about. I ain't seen people having these big ass celebration over the Copa America. So if they. If they are in the middle, I was saying at the Equinox Hotel, right next to it in Hudson Yards, they had people that were like screaming, screaming as a crowd of 2, 000 people out there watching the thing on a goddamn. I ain't seen that for the Copa America FIFA tournament.
Tate Frazier
The World cup is different. It's also cool just to see it in Mexico. US And Canada, you know, all three places get together a little NAFTA moment.
Joel Anderson
Uruguay won the Copa in 2011. That was the last time I saw the Copa, man. Yeah, man, I was broke. Things weren't going well, but I would have thought I was like, you know, at some point, I'm gonna get down to Uruguay. Still ain't happening yet, man.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I mean, South America, a lot of good places to go.
Joel Anderson
Oh, Central America. I want to do that. Oh, yeah, yeah. I've been to Believes. Belize, you know what I'm saying? Y' all done a little Belize.
Tate Frazier
Never been to Belize. Costa Rica is my favorite.
Van Lathan
You know what you're talking about? You told us that.
Joel Anderson
What story?
Van Lathan
Yeah, whatever.
Joel Anderson
Wait, what are you talking about?
Van Lathan
What?
Joel Anderson
I've never talked about going to Belize.
Van Lathan
Yeah, you told us about Belize, bro. You told us.
Joel Anderson
Now you
Van Lathan
really take. Take. Hey, tell us about Belize. You told us about beliefs, dog. It's like, no, I was.
Joel Anderson
I was the best man in my homeboy's wedding. I. I tore my Achilles two weeks before playing basketball.
Van Lathan
I heard you tore something else up down in.
Joel Anderson
Shut up.
Tate Frazier
You could have said you tore the club up.
Joel Anderson
I actually did. Me and one of the bridesmaids hit it off. I thought, you know, know, it was gonna be a little something when we got back then, Joel, see, nothing physical happened,
Van Lathan
man.
Joel Anderson
My foot was up, man.
Van Lathan
So. The foot was up. So you don't feel like you could have performed, could you. Could you? With an injured foot?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, I did.
Van Lathan
I don't know if you could with a torn Achilles.
Joel Anderson
Oh, I did, though.
Van Lathan
You did?
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Just one foot. You. Because you do you push off the headboard.
Joel Anderson
I don't remember the details because this was like 22.
Tate Frazier
I think you got to be on
Joel Anderson
the bottom, but I think, yeah, you
Van Lathan
gotta be on the bottom.
Joel Anderson
I don't even think. I don't even think I. I know.
Van Lathan
I think I did a torn Achilles, bro. If you got the torn Achilles, if it's in the cast.
Joel Anderson
That's what I'm saying. I had a cast on by that point.
Tate Frazier
Okay.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. So when I went to Belize, I had a cast on too.
Tate Frazier
You're keeping the foot propped up.
Van Lathan
Yeah, you gotta get blood flow to it and like that. You're not, you're not putting in work like normal though.
Joel Anderson
Oh, yeah, no, you can't get the same leverage or whatever.
Van Lathan
But yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Joel Anderson
But I mean, yeah, I mean, I was a young man dog, you know?
Tate Frazier
Yeah, you're a G. Everybody knows it. We're gonna take one. We're gonna take one more break here. When we come back, top five headlines of the week. And we'll be right back after this.

Are all batteries the same? That's like asking if all soccer players are the same.
Van Lathan
Take Messi, the most decorated player forever.
Tate Frazier
Is there any other player who has achieved that?
Van Lathan
No, just him. Now take Duracell.
Tate Frazier
Is there any other battery with power boost ingredients inside?
Van Lathan
No, just Duracell.
Tate Frazier
Remember, goats only trust goats because they're built different.
Van Lathan
And Messi only trusts Duracell. This episode is brought to you by Google Chrome. You think you know a browser, but Gemini and Chrome, that's new. Tate Frazier
All right, welcome back. Top five headlines of the week. We're going to start here. We talked about Arch a little bit earlier, but Archie Manning, he went out in the media. I started talking again. Obviously, this is his grandpa. He said the media's expectations for Arch last season were unfair. He went on to say, quote, they crowned Arch before he even played. End quote. And I do have to give Archie Manning some credit. He did say last year that Arch would not be going to the NFL. He kind of got ahead of the story. But he said that they crowned him before he even played. Fine. Bomb was one of those guys that did that, Joel. He said that he was going to be the Heisman Trophy winner. He was going to be the best player in college football.
Van Lathan
Football.
Tate Frazier
Do you agree with Archie Manning when you hear this?
Joel Anderson
Oh, he's right. I mean, I agree.
Tate Frazier
Why didn't you say that? Define Bomb.
Joel Anderson
Wait, I didn't talk about that. With what are you bringing five? This ain't even got nothing to do t
Van Lathan
your mouth. Oh, my God. Okay,
Joel Anderson
I didn't. Van, see Tate, man. All right, all right. I'm telling you, man, I'll be defending.
Tate Frazier
Sorry, that was too easy.
Joel Anderson
I defend you against Van. You know what I'm saying?
Van Lathan
You don't need.
Tate Frazier
No, that was. That was just too. That was just too easy.
Van Lathan
It's too easy. Too easy.
Joel Anderson
No, it's not easy. You had to horn. You have to shoehorn Paul. Fine, but I don't even know what you have to do with that. But anyway, the point is, is that favor ain't fair, dog. That's what the old folks used to say to us. So it is true that they tried to tamp down expectations, but he's the guy who's the face of Red Bull and Uber and EA Sports and Warby Parker and Rory and Panini.
Tate Frazier
You know, he does have a lot of ads.
Joel Anderson
Yes. I mean, so again, so, like, this is what it's all part of. And he's gotten this treatment his whole life. Like, USA Today wrote about it when he was an eighth grader. You guys may know that if you read the piece I wrote for the Ringer last year. The Arch Manning experience versus the Arch Manning industrial complex. You know what I'm saying? But, you know, this is what it's all about.
Tate Frazier
So you were part of the problem?
Joel Anderson
No, I was writing about the film.
Van Lathan
So I. I legitimately watch his first high school game at my desk at tmz. Like his. The first game that I could watch for him. Like, you had heard about it. The name itself. Arch not being Archie, but being sort of this amalgam of all the Mannings. Is he an amalgam of all their talent? Remember, he runs like Michael Vick. He runs like Archie Manning. He throws like Peyton Manning. This is the kid he's dominating. You wanted to See it and he's lucky.
Tate Frazier
Like Eli Manning. Yeah.
Van Lathan
Like he's got all this lore leading up to him and now he had a chance to, to, to, to deliver on it in front of everyone. But honestly, to your point, Tate, I gotta give Archie a lot of credit here because Archie is one of the people that were like hey yo, kind of tipper your expectations as far as what he's going to be. It's going to be a work on the field in terms of his football development and progress and, and he's never one that tried to hype him to that same point though, bro, if you in every ad you gotta get in somebody ass. It's just the way that it works, bro. If you come out there and you're that hyped and we gotta see your face every commercial break with you with the Warby Parkers on, you can't do that and then go out and struggle. And not only that, you can't do that and go out and be average. You have to do that and go out and actually shine. And yeah, I'll say this last thing. That is normally, normally a critique that is reserved for a professional athlete that like that, like that knows how to deal with those types of pressures because they've been doing it longer. You know, you wonder, you wonder if there's a difference for someone that's 19, 20 years old in the way they're going to be able to deal with that.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know I, and I agree with you, but also we just don't ask that question of tennis phenoms, golf pheno, you know what I'm saying? First round picks in the NBA, you know, 19 year olds are professionals in lots of context. And again I, and I know that people are going to say baseball players
Tate Frazier
too, a lot of baseball players, but
Van Lathan
they, they are, but we don't. In all the sports that you're talking about, the phenom situation is, is going to be significantly less routine than it will be in college football. Like it's in the sports that you're talking about. There are wonderkids in tennis, right. There are wonder kids in basketball, but there's going to be a never ending conveyor belt of them in college football because just of the mechanism of the sport of the, the and the college basketball as well, to be honest with you, of the mechanism of the sport and to be real with you, with the, the straight out of high school thing that was going on in the NBA, they actually went back and went maybe that's actually not working for the athletes and for the league as much as we thought it was. They also kind of did that to be on the dick of college basketball, to be honest with you. So. So there's a lot of reasons why that happened. I'm not saying that none of that should exist. I'm not saying that at all. But what I'm saying is there is. There's a specific way that you would have to exist in support of these young men at this age to be dealing with all of that, all. Think about the stories that we heard from. I'll shut up after this. Think about the stories that we heard from Marcus Lattimore and everything that he talked about and everything. Like, that's a lot for a kid, man. Like, it is. And then when you put all of that other stuff on there, I just hope that these young men, their earning potential is what it is, and it should be. I just hope that they're getting the support that they need as men as well as young men as well. Because that's a lot, man.
Joel Anderson
I feel. But see, the thing is, I feel like it was tough for kids even before they knew they were getting paid, right? There was. I mean, how many stories have we heard of people not, I couldn't go to class or, you know, death threats at kickers who missed, you know, missed key kicks in college football? So, like the Specs, man. See, See?
Van Lathan
Make the kick.
Joel Anderson
That's the only thing I mean, see what I'm saying? But look, that's a kid, man. Sebastian Janikowski, man, you got to be. You gotta be concerned about him. So anyway, but the point is, is that. Yeah, it just. Sometimes I don't know what. The point is, dog. I lost it.
Van Lathan
You're right. I'm serious. You're right. The point is, it's always. It's always been a thing. I just wonder. You're right. You're right. Everything you're saying is correct. It's always been a thing. But it's one thing. You wear Texas. You wear your family now. You also wear Warby Parker and Schlitterbahn and.
Tate Frazier
And Red Bull commercials.
Van Lathan
There was a. There was a Drew Aller commercial that continued to run with Terry Crews in it for the entire year, even after he was having this. It just looked crazy, right as everybody else was playing in the playoffs and Drew Aller is no longer a thing. But, you know, it is what it is. Every sport has the same thing.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, well. And I do hear what you're saying, but also, I would say Arch Manning is better equipped to deal with it than almost anybody else. You know, like so he, I mean in that way he's very fortunate that the hype has helped, has elevated him maybe beyond his station to get nil money. But it's maybe not worked out as well on the football field form. But on that side he's got, you know, a great group of people that can help him through that that are familiar with that sort of particular pressure. So he thankful for him. I don't, you know, I don't know what it's like for, you know, somebody else in that position.
Tate Frazier
One last thing just on the Manning family. Did you guys see the video of Peyton's son throwing?
Van Lathan
Did you see that?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, I have seen it.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. He looks cold as shit. Like he looks so good. He looks so much better. He looks so much better than Arch.
Van Lathan
Yeah, I saw that.
Tate Frazier
Like these guys like he's got a way better arm. I'm immediately when I saw him I was like, I think I'm on to the next Manning. Like I've moved on already.
Van Lathan
This in the fifth grade.
Joel Anderson
Look at that. Look at that dog. Look at, look how you doing and say you part of the problem.
Tate Frazier
I'm just saying I see more natural talent throwing town.
Van Lathan
So here's the thing with the Mannings. All of these little is gonna have a chance. They have like legitimately top flight technical expertise and honestly like pretty strong genes. These Mannings are. They're big, they're 6 foot 4, they're 6 foot 5. I mean Peyton can't run but like Archie Manning was a dog. He was a phenomenal athlete. So they're gonna have, if you got somebody with Manning in the last name, they're going to have the opportunity to like be elite athletes like from the quarterback position, bro, like. And even if they do come out with like not great physical talent as far as arm talent is, they're going to be so technically ahead of everyone else that at least in middle school and high school they're going to put up crazy numbers, man.
Joel Anderson
You think about mushroom and 59150 according to 2, 4, 7 sports.
Tate Frazier
How old is he?
Joel Anderson
Well, his class of 20th, 30. So does that mean he's a freshman this year in high school?
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Van Lathan
He needs to grow.
Tate Frazier
You got a canon.
Joel Anderson
This reminds me, do you remember. Of course Van does remember Abram Booty and Josh Booty, the whole Evangel Catholic, Evander Cat. Yes. I covered the, the.
Van Lathan
I think he was Christian. Should I say?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, Shreveport Evangel Christian. They had Jake Booty who Was, I think, his nephew.
Tate Frazier
Are they related to John David Booty?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, John David Boot is part of the same family.
Van Lathan
Is the bro.
Joel Anderson
Brother, man. Shreveport Times flew me out to USC to interview John David Booty. But anyway, I covered Foodie's.
Tate Frazier
A tough last name.
Joel Anderson
Tough life. But, man, those were cold, though. So I didn't even really.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
You know what I'm saying? But so Jake Booty ended up going to Calvary, which was, you know, they had a schism at Evangel, and so they broke off, and then they formed another school, Calvary, and Jake Booty was a quarterback at that team. And actually, Doug Peterson, the former Philadelphia Eagles coach at that bowl winner, sir. He was a head coach. He was coaching that team when I covered them. And Jake Booty was cold as, man. He was. I think he was an area player of the year. Was five, eight, though, man, just to. Some things you can't overcome.
Van Lathan
Sometimes it don't happen like that.
Joel Anderson
Sometimes it don't happen.
Tate Frazier
I grew, like, 6 inches from 9th to 10th grade, so he still got time.
Joel Anderson
Oh, it's possible. It's possible.
Van Lathan
By the way, they was the. All the Booty brothers. They was. They was cold in baseball, too.
Joel Anderson
Oh, yeah. Abram played. Played professional baseball, I think. Or did Josh.
Van Lathan
Did for a little bit, too.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, yeah, yeah. They were. They meant Abram. They were trying to. What happened to General Booty? That. That's. He was the most recent one out of that family. Where did General Booty end up?
Van Lathan
Can't remember what happened to General Booty?
Tate Frazier
I just remember his name being, like, on list, like, names in college football. You know what I mean?
Joel Anderson
Oh, man. He was at. Oh, man. Okay, so let's see. He originally began his career at Tyler Junior College before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, recorded no statistics, entered the portal, transferred to University of Louisiana, Monroe, and then at the end of the year, Nancy announced he would enter the transfer portal for the third time. And that's the last we've heard of the young man.
Van Lathan
No more Booty, bro.
Joel Anderson
No more Booty. The Booty's out.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. No more Booty. Tough. This story is Booty in Joel's mind. The CFL will not allow Brendan Sorsby to join its league. League this season. Joel, any thoughts on Soursby?
Joel Anderson
Okay, I'm going.
Tate Frazier
I just love how. I just love how upset you get when we bring up.
Joel Anderson
I'm gonna do this one time.
Van Lathan
I.
Joel Anderson
People are acting like. They're like, oh, he made a huge mistake by availing himself of his legal rights. They're like he should have never challenged it in. And what would have happened? He would have set out a year, just like he's going to do right now anyway.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, exactly. It's the same result.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. Everyone is entitled to defend themselves. And it's not supposed to be evidence of anything other than him fighting for his career. It didn't mean that he doesn't have contrition. It doesn't mean that the addiction is just an excuse. It just meant that I have this avenue to pursue. I'm going to do it. And I can't blame him. What really fucked him up was Ken Paxton jumping the gun and doing that kind of shit. And that's what kind of triggered everything that allowed them to do it. But, I mean, but the, the last we heard before that was that he was eligible to play, but other teams were getting mad about it. So anyway, I just think that people acting like he shouldn't defend himself and shouldn't have saw it as legal recourse. That's dumb to me. And about the cfl, I mean, just whatever, dog, okay. They can't play at the cfl. I love the cfl. That's some good football. I've, I've seen the Toronto Argonauts play. My favorite football player ever played for the. Now the Edmonton Elks used to be the Edmonton Eskimos. I'm just, I don't, I just, I don't agree with the. Professionally, they are free to set the parameters there, but he hasn't done anything that runs afoul of the, the, the rules in that league as of yet. And I just, you know, if a team wants to sign them, they should be able to sign him. But you know, they, obviously that's. The league sees it differently.
Van Lathan
So I think for him, he's got a large portion of his money and he's got a full year away from the game. So what I hope for Brendan Sorsby is that he builds the structure that he needs. Number one, not to relapse, number two, to continue to build this, to build his career and look at all of this as adversity that he brought on to himself. Now that he does it, there's nothing noble about taking the hardest road. It's not like Britney Shoresby should have been like, hey, guess what? Nobody goes into the judge when they get caught doing something to be like, yo, man, give me the 25 years. Like, no. Like, no. Nobody. Like, nobody does that. Nobody's like, you know what, man, I did terrible. I up. I shouldn't have been carrying that go ahead and give me the 25. So I learned my lesson. Nah, man. You see if you could get the
Tate Frazier
three, you're like, you see, that's the legal system. Yeah, yeah.
Van Lathan
You see if you could get the three, right. You, you, you, you, you, you do that. And so there should be no ill will to sort of your source be or Kessler for anyone, for them pleading their case and everything. Now, all the work that everybody said that they were doing, let's see if you're actually doing it now. Let's see if everyone that said that they were in for making sure that Brendan Sorsby was recovering and had safety around him. Let's see if you really mean that. Now that he's not on the football field for you, now that he's not on the football field for you, let's see if you actually care about the life of the young athlete. Let's see if he's going to be around the facility, if he's going to be around the team, if he's going to be welcomed, if, if people are going to look out for him, if people are going to call, if they're going to check up on him, if they're going to do all of those things to pour into this young man now that he's not out there winning games for you. Let's see now if you actually care about the person. Because I've heard, why take chances away from a young man when athletes have behaved badly for decades? I just don't hear about the guys from my neighborhood. It. I never hear it about them. I never hear people make those arguments about young men that come from where I come from. And look how I look. Looked how I looked when I was, When I was that age. Because they need second chances, too. They need investment, too. They ain't running no 4, 3 40s or throwing the ball no 70 yards. But they need somebody to care about them, too. I'm not trying to conflate those two things. What I'm trying to say is everybody that's in Brendan Sorsby's life is going to get the opportunity to. To show up for him right now,
Tate Frazier
show what they're really about to show.
Van Lathan
And now he's not playing for Texas Tech. And I hope over this next year, which is probably going to be hard for him, that they take that opportunity.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, I'm with you. I think that's a great call. Next up, third story here. The pack is back. Pac 12 football is officially back July 1st. The seven new teams are officially member institutions of the Pac 12. So.
Joel Anderson
God damn.
Tate Frazier
We have a real. We have a real conference here. We're back.
Van Lathan
We back.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, we're back. The pack is back. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Texas State, Utah State, Washington State, Oregon State. A lot of states in the new PAC 12. But the conference is back. The pack is back. Is this good news? Joel? I know you're excited. Get your Idaho shirt on. They're probably upset they weren't invited.
Joel Anderson
I was confused because I didn't see that on our list, so I didn't prepare anything for that. So what am I supposed to say about this?
Tate Frazier
Want you to know the pack is back.
Joel Anderson
All right.
Tate Frazier
I mean, you excited about this?
Joel Anderson
Listed all the teams. No, about this dog. I mean, I did know the pack 12.
Tate Frazier
This is the first day of it actually being back. It's. There was the pack two for two dark years, obviously, and now.
Joel Anderson
Supposed to be in the document. I didn't see it. Okay.
Tate Frazier
And Zaga is the only team that's not a football playing school. All eight teams will play each other in football.
Joel Anderson
So. Okay, yeah, I mean, I, I. Boise State, Colorado state.
Tate Frazier
Those are two good programs.
Van Lathan
Is this the real PAC12?
Joel Anderson
No.
Van Lathan
Is this, Is this the new. Is this new Coke? Like, is the Pac 12 is Arizona versus UCLA? That's the Pac 12, brother pack. The Pac 12 is Cal. Stanford. The Pac 12 is the Oregon.
Joel Anderson
Washington.
Van Lathan
Yeah, like that, that, that's the Washington State.
Tate Frazier
Oregon State. You know, they're still there.
Van Lathan
They're still, they're still there. Like, they're, they're the ones. Like, is this, can this be the Pac12?
Tate Frazier
No, I think so. Because I think Boise State's going to be big for them in football. I think that San Diego State's going to be a nice addition in basketball. I think Utah State's been doing really well in basketball as well. And then Gonzaga is a national power. I think they're going to eventually get to a point where they can actually be something. Now, will it look more like the mountain west of old? Definitely. But it won't be, you know, completely disregarded.
Joel Anderson
Well, that's what I'm saying, though. I mean, because, like, it will be maybe a better version of the Mountain west, but just because you call it the PAX World don't mean that we have to respect it as the PAC 12. You know what I mean? And, and so I.
Tate Frazier
It's like the Southern Conference used to have North Carolina in it, but now the Southern Conference has Davidson. You know what I Mean, like, they have to repurpose.
Joel Anderson
I mean, it's, it's a new thing. But again, for those of us who are alive at the time, we'll be like, man, dang, with the pack, we would be like that. You know what I'm saying? Because again, because I'm old, I still think of like, okay, the Big 12 is a made up conference. I'm really a Southwest Conference guy. And those are big eight schools, you know what I'm saying? And so like the Big 12, I just, I don't buy it as a thing. Like, I know that it's just a collection of schools that had nowhere else to go. And that's kind of the same thing with the PAC 12. Them schools had nowhere else to go. Either they had nowhere to go but up, or you were like Oregon State and Washington State. And I feel really terrible for them because those are really good fan baseball. They have a tradition of fun football. They've had some good teams over the course of our life. Tom, Shout Out. TJ Hushman, Zada, you know what I'm saying? Who came on our show?
Tate Frazier
Yeah, our guy.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, but beaver. But, yeah, so, yeah, anyway. Oh, man, you know what? You me up because I'll tell. Let me tell the quick story about beaver because this is. Have I told the story about beaver on here before?
Van Lathan
What, Joe?
Tate Frazier
Is this back to Belize?
Joel Anderson
No, guys, they're making some up. I never told them about that.
Van Lathan
I don't know what Joe's life.
Joel Anderson
I did not do no sex.
Van Lathan
Go ahead, Joe, go ahead.
Joel Anderson
All right, so the beaver story is I, at the time, I was dating a young woman. And we, when I was in Dallas. And so we were going to go to the zoo, but the zoo was in Fort Worth. And even though I've been to school in Fort Worth for four and a half years, I never went to the Fort Worth zoo. And so on the way over there, I'm just geeking, you know what I'm saying? I was like, man, I ain't seen a fox before. You know what I'm saying? I don't know if they have foxes at the zoo. I was like, I hadn't seen monkeys in a long time. And I was like, you know what else I haven't seen? I've never seen a beaver before. And my girlfriend just gets cold. She's just like, don't say that word. Why? What's going on? And she's like, I just don't want you to say it. I mean, you know. And I was like, okay, finally she said, well, look, when I was in school, one of my classmates used to talk about my beaver. You know, just like the. Okay, so anyway. And I was like, oh, man, that's sad. But I was talking about the animal. So I was like, I don't know. I'm not. I understand what you said. Well, what the fuck am I supposed to call that animal if I can't call it beaver? All right? And so I swear to God, we got to Fort Worth, which if. You know, from Dallas and Fort Worth. We got to Fort Worth, and I was so mad, I turned around. I turned around, we went back to Dallas.
Tate Frazier
So you still never seen a beaver?
Joel Anderson
I still never seen a beaver. I've still never seen a beaver. Let me make sure. Are there any in Maryland? Because I did see a weird animal fans down other. Oh, wait, there are beavers in this part of the country. But maybe I have.
Tate Frazier
Do you know.
Joel Anderson
Do you.
Tate Frazier
Do you know what the phobia is called if you're scared of or if you have a fear of beavers? What? Castorophobia. So she had historical historophobia.
Joel Anderson
All right.
Tate Frazier
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. It was just more evidence that we did not need to be together.
Tate Frazier
Was that the end?
Joel Anderson
It was very, very toxic.
Tate Frazier
Another year.
Joel Anderson
We held on for, like, another year, dog. Yeah, man, it was crazy. It was crazy.
Tate Frazier
Ben just passed out, bro.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Tate Frazier
We learned the fear of beavers is castorophobia, so that's what she has. Yeah, but Joel. Joel lasted for another year with her.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Oh, my God.
Joel Anderson
It was crazy. It was very crazy. Shout out, though, man. She's a mother of three doing well in life, you know what I'm saying?
Van Lathan
So she put that beaver to use, huh? Oh, my God, bro.
Tate Frazier
So maybe that's something for the tailgaters at some point. Like, how can Joel see a beaver?
Joel Anderson
I mean, find.
Tate Frazier
Find a way to show him.
Joel Anderson
I mean, bro. I mean, have y' all seen a
Tate Frazier
beaver in real life?
Van Lathan
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Joel Anderson
No, wait. Where have y' all seen a beaver at? For real?
Van Lathan
Well, I saw him in the zoo.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. Zoo?
Van Lathan
For real?
Joel Anderson
Oh, man. Okay. All right.
Van Lathan
They had him in the zoo. I've never seen a wild beaver. Wow. I've never. That's funny what y' all talking about. That is funny.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
That's hilarious.
Joel Anderson
Oh, man. Anyway. Yeah, man. All right. So anyway, for Oregon State, Washington State, that. It's just really tough, man. And, you know, I. I hope it works out for them. I hope if there's a new realignment that they're part of It. But it just. It seems like they're on the outside looking in forever.
Tate Frazier
Joel, next time you come to la, apparently it's the LA river. They have. They have beavers.
Joel Anderson
For real. Oh man.
Tate Frazier
That's what it says about 30 days. Nora. Some stretches of the LA river feature naturalized river bottoms where beavers have been filmed building dams.
Joel Anderson
Have beavers.
Van Lathan
Oh, amazing.
Joel Anderson
In Maryland. And can be found in every single county.
Tate Frazier
There's beaver. There's beavers everywhere.
Van Lathan
We don't have them. I feel like we have the nutria rat. I'm not so sure if I know nutria.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, yeah.
Van Lathan
The nutrient. Right? I'm not so sure we got beavers back home. But see, I don't know. I got in trouble because I said I hadn't seen like a bald eagle. Like talking about was like dumb ass bald eagles everywhere. We see them all the time. Stupid and like. I don't know why people treat me this way. It's like the same thing they did to me over the World Cup.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
Idiot. Like that. We got balls. You've never been to Raimi before. I've been to Raimi all the time. Time. All the time. I go to Raimi. I fish sackling out of Remy all the time. I've never seen the bald eagle before. Never. But they got him. So shout out to them America 250.
Joel Anderson
When they say. And they do talk about the bald eagle is like kind of like. It's like a vulture, basically. It's not. It's not like a very distinguished bird when you. Anyway, well that's.
Van Lathan
I mean they're gigantic. So if you see one, it's like kind of like it.
Joel Anderson
What's so special about the bald eagle?
Van Lathan
He looks cool and he's huge.
Joel Anderson
Wait, what does a falcon look like?
Van Lathan
Let's move on, guys, because like Joe. Like Joe's.
Joel Anderson
All right.
Tate Frazier
Joel's gonna be looking at animals for the next falcon.
Joel Anderson
Falcon kind of look cooler though. For real though.
Tate Frazier
Falcon is. Falcon is cool.
Van Lathan
Is a falcon cooler than a bald eagle? Let me see.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, dog. Look at this. Colors and too.
Tate Frazier
They get the talents. Yeah.
Van Lathan
Look at that falcon kind of cool.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. Falcon kind of imagine the US but
Van Lathan
he don't look as cool as the bald eagle, though. The bald eagle is gigantic, bro. The falcon like a little.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, but I mean he probably got. Hold on, man. Because I mean that falcons can really a lot of animals up.
Tate Frazier
They can.
Joel Anderson
They'll come take.
Van Lathan
Oh, bro. Hey, look at the ball eagle. The ball eagle. Look. Holder the ball eagle look like the bald Eagle looks like a slave owner. I can see why. Yeah, they got like, you. You look. Look at the bald eagle right now. Now the ball eagles like George Washington. Yeah, he does.
Joel Anderson
He doesn't look like a founding father. That's why they do.
Tate Frazier
All right, next up, Wisconsin. They have announced a jersey patch sponsorship deal with Culver's. Joel, you're ready for that one. Your thoughts? Have you ever had Culver's, man?
Joel Anderson
I was gonna. I've never been to Culver's, man.
Tate Frazier
That's one of the places.
Joel Anderson
Been out of my. It's. Is it kind of like Dairy Queen or Brahms, something like that?
Tate Frazier
I think so. I mean, a lot of people like cookout west love Culver. Never could be cookout. I know that. O.
Joel Anderson
Okay. Oh, my bad. My bad. Okay.
Tate Frazier
They wish. But, yeah. Culvert is. I. I have never had. But they have cheese curds, right? Isn't that something?
Joel Anderson
They have? Is that right?
Van Lathan
I don't know what this place is.
Tate Frazier
I. I've only heard west people that I know, they like Culver's.
Joel Anderson
Y' all ever been to Tim Hortons?
Van Lathan
Never.
Tate Frazier
That's Canada, though.
Van Lathan
They got it. They got them around. Oh, Cobras. Look like he's smashing.
Joel Anderson
Oh, yeah.
Tate Frazier
Hold on.
Joel Anderson
It looks all right. That looks good.
Van Lathan
Because this look good as hell.
Joel Anderson
This value, man. I bet Atlanta got of c. Let me see, man.
Tate Frazier
I think CS is, like, everywhere. It's kind of like how Chick fil a is.
Joel Anderson
It's kind of coming. Yeah, it's like. It's. It's blowing up a little bit, man.
Van Lathan
Let me see. Oh, they about. Well, here's the thing, though. By the time we get cs, it's probably going to be that private equity got to him, and we don't get
Joel Anderson
the real C. Oh, yeah.
Van Lathan
You know what I'm saying? Like, that's the thing. Let me see. Let me see. What the. Cuz. Like, I. If you get n. No Butter burgers,
Tate Frazier
that's what they have.
Joel Anderson
Butter burger Burgers. Okay.
Van Lathan
That's butter burgers at the corner. You know who has a butter burger?
Joel Anderson
I think Steak and Shake, y'.
Tate Frazier
All.
Joel Anderson
But y' all done steak and shake before.
Van Lathan
I've been there before. Name throw me off sometimes. Steak and Shake.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. It's not bad.
Van Lathan
They'll sound like it. They'll sound like Steak and Shake and steak.
Joel Anderson
That man. Yo, man, so you're right. So let's see.
Van Lathan
I'll.
Joel Anderson
Let's see if we can agree on this, because I was telling people. I was like, yo, Popeye's, chicken don't taste the same no more. It, like, in the 80s and 90s, it was totally different. And then it got bought by the group that owned Burger King. And I feel like the chicken is still very good, but it is not. It does not live up to what Popeyes was like in the 80s and 90s along the I10 corridor.
Van Lathan
So I'm gonna agree with you. But what the last thing that you just said was the most important thing, which was along the i10 corridor. Like, it's not a Popeyes that you go to in Louisiana or East Texas, where the Popeyes let you down. Down. I had never been let down with Popeyes anywhere until I left the state. And when I go back to Louisiana, it's the same way. But, like, out here, it's Popeyes. You can. With the Popeyes, but it's hidden. It's hit or miss.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
And it was never hit or miss before. It was like, legitimately, it was a special.
Joel Anderson
It was a special occasion. Yeah.
Van Lathan
Right. So I, I don't really know if that's necessarily as much about the sale to private equity, which I'm almost certain that that's like a component to it, or if it's just about the fact that you outside of the, of the region, you know, and they don't know
Tate Frazier
how to make it right. You know what I mean? Like, I had Bojangles in Vegas because I was like, I can't believe they have a Bojangles in Vegas. And I went there and I'm like, this is not right.
Joel Anderson
It wasn't the same. Oh, man.
Tate Frazier
No.
Joel Anderson
Damn.
Tate Frazier
I'm like, they don't know how to make biscuits. They don't know how to, like, actually season the fries. They don't know how to make the chicken.
Joel Anderson
My homeboy owns Frenchie's Chicken in Houston, Okay. And so he. I, I. They're having Bojangles in Houston. Houston's going to get a Bojang, Jangles.
Tate Frazier
It's. It's coming west.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Tate Frazier
They. They've already had 25 franchises bought on the West Coast.
Joel Anderson
I. With Bojangles. Heavy, man. When you would go through the, through the, through the terminal in the Charlotte airport, I run my ass over there so I could get that, that, and
Tate Frazier
even that one in the airport isn't
Van Lathan
like, man, I'm gonna open up a Culver's, bro. This look busted. Really? Yeah, bro. They got, they got, they got, they got, they got.
Tate Frazier
We do like a trifecta restaurant, like a Culver's Bojangles Popeyes. You know,
Van Lathan
I do that with my guys.
Joel Anderson
That's kind of nice. That's kind of.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, we all have.
Van Lathan
Where's the Bojangles coming, though?
Tate Frazier
It's in Vegas right now. It's this far west.
Joel Anderson
Well, it's going to Houston. It's going to Houston.
Tate Frazier
Going to Houston.
Van Lathan
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. And so my homeboy was like, I. I posted something about it on Instagram, like, oh. And he's like, man, that after he said. I mean, he was hating on. He was hating on Bojangles, I was like, man, there's enough room in Houston for two chicken places, dog. Nothing will ever replace Frenchies.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. I was gonna say, like, it's just like. It's a little bit of, you know, a little separate taste there. But, like, Bojangles is unbelievable.
Joel Anderson
I mean, I'm in the Bowberry biscuit, man. What?
Tate Frazier
Breakfast is so good. Yeah, obviously. Four piece chicken supreme, honey mustard, fries, sweet tea.
Joel Anderson
Man, you know what they need to build around the country, man? And if. If y' all are into this, please let me know. If you watch the show Polio Tropical. I don't know if it's still going anymore, but, yo, that is special, man. I would love to see.
Van Lathan
Yeah, I'm looking at it right now. They have polio Tropical. Oh, no, they don't have one here. They got all different types of polos, though. But they don't have no polio.
Joel Anderson
There's a lot. There's a lot of different polios.
Tate Frazier
That's a Florida. Isn't that Florida?
Joel Anderson
Yeah, man. When I lived, you would go to polio.
Van Lathan
When I'm in Florida, I like to go to this place called the Chicken Kitchen. It's like a polio Tropical. But, like, really, they got the chicken couscous. Chop, chop. Yeah, it's great. I think it's just a Miami food.
Tate Frazier
So nice they named it twice. Last. Last story, I was gonna hit just the Chris Johnson als. Did you guys see? I just, like, that was. It's a sad story. But, man, I just, you know, CJ2K. I. I did not know it was at that stage or anything. And that was like, a real sobering thing to. To see that interview with Strahan and everything. But. But I remember I saw Chris Johnson at ECU for the first time, and I was like, that's the fastest person I've ever seen in my entire life.
Van Lathan
Fantastic athlete. I only have one thing to say about this, is that that was an announcement that he was making about his condition. I'm not so sure if that was the proper forum to sit down and have a hard hitting conversation about the rigors and the physical demands of the NFL game. I think if you're talking to doctors, we're talking to owners, if we're talking to coaches, you can have that conversation. But I think what I took away from that was a man sitting down talking about just an enormously difficult topic. Right. Like he was diagnosed and when I saw him. Yeah, he didn't, When I saw him, this just happened. It moved so fast. Yeah, man, it moved so fast. And so, you know, we all have to make sure that we hold a certain journalistic standard when we're in those situations. But I personally think that Michael Strahan did exactly what he was supposed to do there, which was allow Chris Johnson and his wife to tell their story about one of the most devastating sets of circumstances that one could deal with in a brave and triumphant way.
Joel Anderson
So, you know, wait, let me ask you this, man. Would you, would you have asked the question?
Van Lathan
No. You would have really?
Joel Anderson
No, I mean, I don't think really,
Van Lathan
I, I wouldn't have, I, I, if, if the question would have been asked, I don't know that I would have had a huge problem with it.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Van Lathan
But in that scenario, in that situation, I just don't think that it was a, I wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it just because he's, that didn't seem what, like, that was what the moment was about. Like. But, but give me your take on it, though.
Joel Anderson
Well, no, I don't think you, if
Van Lathan
you guys don't know what we're talking. Should we set up what we're talking about?
Tate Frazier
It's like, like, yeah, I mean, Michael, yeah. Michael Strahan did an interview with Chris Johnson and his wife and you know, basically talking about his diagnosis. And I mean, they were compare. I mean, even a year ago, how much change. I mean, it has happened dramatically, fast. And then there were a lot of people that came out after the fact that basically called out Strahan for not asking about the implications of playing football and you know, know what that had to do with his injuries and you know, what happened and you know, as far as the involvement as the disease to football and the correlation. But go ahead, Joe.
Joel Anderson
No, so Van made a very compelling, smart argument that I agree with. When he caught, when he said an announcement, I was like, it cleared for me. I was like, you know what, he's right. But I don't think if somebody, I think there is a humane way to ask that question without it feeling out of pocket, you know, out of pocket. Just like, I mean, I think a real question would be like, like, you know, some people think that football may have causes. Would you ever play football? You know, if you had to do it all over again, would you play football? Boom. You know, I had to interview Kevin.
Tate Frazier
I just feel like that takes away from his story. You know what I mean?
Joel Anderson
I don't think if you, if you don't ask like a bunch of hard follow ups. Are you serious? Well, I mean, a lot of people, the study shows this. I mean, it didn't have to be.
Tate Frazier
But then the story is like Chris Johnson says amidst, you know, his alsace diagnosis, that he would not or he would still play football or whatever it is.
Joel Anderson
I still feel like the, the, the, the headline was Chris Johnson has als. Because we didn't know that
Van Lathan
to Tate's point. And so listen once again to Tate's point. If he says I would still play football, it's, it's, it from my TMZ days. That was one of the ones that if you got an answer, you got to have, and the headline is a 50 50. No matter how strong it is, I would still play football even though I have this debilitating disease at 39. Or I wouldn't have played football had I like, like you get the headline. But the headline does become him talking about that to me at least, and not him telling the story about his diagnosis and things like that. And this is the last thing I'll say about it as a regards to that. You know, does Chris Johnson know the statistics? Is Chris Johnson. Have they. Maybe you get in like that? Do you ask, are you, are you aware that you're four times more likely to develop las if you played in als, if you played in the NFL. Is that something that Chris Johnson knows? I mean, I would imagine that there had to be some conversation of his career and how it might have affected him, but how deep can he actually even go into that? If we're going to have that conversation, do you have it with the person tricking with the disease, or do you have it with someone who can be held accountable for what it is that they say about those statistics and about
Tate Frazier
the safety of the players, like Roger Goodell? Well, that's a, that's a, that's a fair thing to ask Adele or owners in the NFL?
Joel Anderson
I think that it, it's a, it's a, it's a natural question, and it's something he's almost certainly has to know about because he's going to have to be grappling with the NFL for his health care for the rest of his life. I mean, I don't. I mean, unless the NFL is all of a sudden become extremely generous and has vowed to take care of his health care for the rest of his life, but, like, inevitably it's going to come back to that and it's going to be aggressive. And the reason I'm saying it, I interviewed a former NFL running back, Kevin Turner. He had ALS. It was 2013. He died about 2016. He was like 41 years old. And it was like, yeah, ALS just took him immediately. But the reason he was talking is because the NFL was fighting them in that concussion related class action lawsuit. Right. And so, I mean, maybe you're right, Van and Tate, that, that wasn't the. That wasn't the time for it. But I would imagine that inevitably Chris Johnson is going to be at odds with football or the NFL because, I mean, it seems clear that there's some sort of link there and he's going to want them to be, you know, legally responsible for. For paying out.
Van Lathan
They would be monumentally stupid to stun on him in any way, even if they have with other players. He made this announcement on Good Morning America, but, you know, I know, I know, dog. I know, I know. I'm just saying in, in that situation. Jesus Christ.
Tate Frazier
Like, that would be such a fumble for them.
Van Lathan
Yeah. Like, they read like Gucci. Monumentally stupid to get into that type of situation with him when he was just in front of the whole world. You know, it was very moving. I just, you know, I don't. I know. It's just not too much on Michael Strahan here. That is not an easy situation. And you want to make sure.
Tate Frazier
Not who Michael Strahan is.
Van Lathan
Right.
Tate Frazier
You want to make sure you're doing 60 minutes.
Joel Anderson
I imagine they came to him because. Because they didn't want, like a grill.
Van Lathan
Yeah, precisely. They wanted to have this story and talk about what they've been going through and maybe answering questions about that situation in NFL. The medical. Maybe that's beyond that pay grade right now. But, you know, I understand, I understood it. I just thought, God damn, that's a tough one. That's a tough one. Yeah, yeah.
Tate Frazier
It's tough to see.
Joel Anderson
I was looking at Steve Gleason, by the way.
Van Lathan
Yeah, from the Saints, man.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, he didn't. So he had. He didn't sue the league, but because of Kevin Turner's. His role in that lawsuit. Apparently now people that are diagnosed with ALS, they can receive up to $5 million from this compensation fund. So.
Van Lathan
Amazing.
Joel Anderson
I mean, again, you know what's crazy, though? $5 million sounds like a lot of money to you. Start talking about medical care for the rest of your life, you know?
Van Lathan
Right. Particularly.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, yeah, right.
Van Lathan
Like, you know how that. That worse and all the care that you need and what needs to happen. But the bottom line is, God bless Chris Johnson and his family and all the. The young men, young women out there playing sports and doing things like that. You know, just kind of be cognizant of what the risks are, like, what it is that you give up. Because it can be a lot.
Joel Anderson
I got cte and I'm still gonna. I still don't regret it.
Van Lathan
We can tell. We can. We can tell.
Joel Anderson
I know. That's fine. I use my hair as a projectile for a lot of time. You know what I'm saying? It paid off. It's all right.
Van Lathan
Yeah, man. Man. Razor roof for Joe for that.
Joel Anderson
That's what's up, man. Wait, I wanted to ask Van about the Lakers, man.
Tate Frazier
Yeah, yeah. That was the last thing.
Van Lathan
Tough. Oh, well, no, we don't know if it's tough yet. We don't know. We got an all white team. We Is.
Tate Frazier
Is.
Van Lathan
Is the Lakers got an all white team?
Tate Frazier
What's the start? What's the starting five? Luca.
Van Lathan
Luca Kessler. Reeves Laravia. I don't even know if Laravia is in the starting lineup right now because they signed. They just signed that other guy. I can't even pronounce his name that he's supposed to come in. Yeah, Mamu, they like, they just signed him. He's supposed to be your guy. Rui out. Canard out. LeBron out. Smart out. Out. White boys in. That's what. That's. That's what. That's what the Lakers are doing.
Tate Frazier
How do you feel about LeBron leaving?
Van Lathan
I was time. It was time for LeBron.
Tate Frazier
Every Lakers fan I know, like, my neighbors are both. Both big Lakers fans, and they're just like, yeah, It's. It's time.
Van Lathan
LeBron James was like, exactly what the Lakers fan base needs. Stability, all that stuff there. It was time. But I think he wants to go out on his own terms. He's not gonna be able to do that with it being Luka Donchi's team.
Tate Frazier
Yeah. And I think the Lakers want to be the Lakers again, You know, like Right now, it's LeBron and the Lakers. You know, it's like David Ruffin and the Temptations. Like, they want to be the Temptations again.
Joel Anderson
I'll see. I mean, my thing is, like, Lakers fans, show some respect. You know what I'm saying?
Tate Frazier
Like, I think they've shown. They've shown a lot.
Joel Anderson
I feel like there's always been a little bit, because they gave him eight
Tate Frazier
years to run the team. That's a long time.
Joel Anderson
And he's just. I mean, he's. He just like Van. He's like a Kobe Stan, you know what I'm saying? So he's like. And I feel like this is a little bit of a thing where, like, they really give Braun.
Van Lathan
Right.
Joel Anderson
Just do props. And I'm like, before Braun got there, they had. They had the longest losing stretch. They hadn't been that bad since they were in Minneapolis, and Brian came and saved them and made them relevant again in the NBA. And I'm just like, y'. All. This dude played hard for y'. All, was a great player. I mean, didn't get any trouble. All this shit. All true. Why?
Van Lathan
Why?
Joel Anderson
I respect him. I don't get it.
Van Lathan
But you know what the deal is? That's not what captivates people. What captivates people is moments and stories and snapshots and connection. And for whatever reason, it never quite happened with LeBron James. As much as people should and do appreciate him, him is not the same. I don't know what you want me to tell everybody. Like, everybody got that. Everybody got that. That person that they love and they with and they attracted to and everybody. Like, this person's terrible for you. Whatever. This other person is perfect, does everything perfect. It's not the same. You can't explain it. You have a connection to them. That's what the thing is. That's the deal is if you. If you were of that Kobe generation, it was going to be Kobe N. If you're a little bit younger than that, it could be both guys. But you have to respect and applaud what LeBron James did as a Laker, what LeBron James did with every team that he was with. Really?
Joel Anderson
Yeah. That's what's up, man. Well, I mean, good. You know, the Luke. I mean, here, not now.
Tate Frazier
You know, also, I think the Lakers are probably the third team in the LeBron story, right? I mean, it's Cavs, Heat, then Lakers. So I think that's the other part.
Joel Anderson
Yeah. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
Van Lathan
Yeah.
Joel Anderson
Yeah.
Tate Frazier
And probably whatever team he goes to next will be the fourth team in that story. But.
Joel Anderson
Yeah, I mean, I know, but see, I mean, the thing is, Tate, you always be kind of throwing, like, light jabs at Brian because I think. Think this.
Tate Frazier
I'm not throwing lights, anything.
Joel Anderson
You all.
Van Lathan
Yeah, you know.
Joel Anderson
You know, I just. You throw your little thing at it, man.
Van Lathan
You.
Joel Anderson
I guess it is what it is.
Van Lathan
Throw your little thing at it. You gonna let him talk? You throw your little thing at it. Jesus Christ.
Joel Anderson
So you got a little meat, man. All right.
Tate Frazier
Anyway, I hope van can send you some meat, though, to you and your dad when he gets there, you know, Fine.

This episode of Ringer Tailgate delivers classic summer college football banter as Van, Joel, and Tate break down the latest buzz from the Manning Passing Academy, analyze the newly released EA Sports College Football 27 QB and offense ratings, and dig into the resurrection of the Pac-12 conference. The crew ricochets from playful meat-delivery debates to sharp commentary on NIL-era pressures, and even finds time for cultural takes, World Cup talk, and food rants.

This episode is a supremely fun, insightful, and chaotic blend of college football culture, quarterback reviews, a healthy dose of food and pop culture, and clever observations on the state of the game. The Manning Passing Academy reactions and the conversation around hype, NIL, and media pressure on young stars are especially strong. Food and family jokes add to the chemistry, and the show balances reverence, irreverence, and real insight about college football’s past, present, and future.
For listeners wanting a “vibe check” on CFB’s culture and headlines, this episode is a summer must-listen.
