Unnamed Host
Hi, guys. What's going on? Happy Friday night. We got a Friday night news dump. A big one. And I've got my buddy Mike Silver right next to me. This story, Brock Purdy.
Mike Silver
There's no actual.
Unnamed Host
There's no.
Mike Silver
Actually. We're in the same coast.
Unnamed Host
Same coast and the same home. Right now he's in my. I invited Mike Silver into my house here because this story was so big. He got on a plane and. And was able to fly across the country in what, eight minutes? I think that's what it was. Incredible Just, just to be here to share with you his response, thoughts, opinions and intel he has on everything involving the Brock Purdy contract. So look, we knew this thing was getting done. We've heard nothing but positive vibes for the last few weeks. I just, you know, I think they were really trying to nail down that annual per year number, make an agreement on it. And here they are striking a deal of five years, 265 million. They got the biggest deal done that they needed to get done here.
Mike Silver
A couple things here. Number one, Kyle Shanahan made the decision that they want to commit to Brock Purdy before Christmas of 2022. Brock Purdy was about three games in as the starter when Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt, ended up going to the NFC championship game suffering the elbow injury. But Kyle had already decided. So whether you think it's good news or not, the guy who has the juice in that building, Kyle Shanahan, had already made that call. And obviously Jed York and John lynch in alignment on that as they as that triumvirate always is to their credit. Second thing, it sounds like a lot of money and it is, but Brock Purdy is coming off two and a half seasons of being arguably the most underpaid player in the history of the sport, thanks to the ridiculous rookie wage scale that I don't know how they agreed to in 2011, but because he was the last pick of the draft, they weren't even eligible to extend up until now. And he's been making minimum. And I know it's all relative, but Brock Purdy, they've had a great deal on Brock Purdy to this point. It's now time for Brock Purdy to have that financial security and he earned it.
Unnamed Host
Yeah. And you look around at the league right now in terms of what the quarterbacks are making, he's right in that. Jared Golf salary to a. You know, and the Trevor Lawrence number was I think the number most thought he would land at. I know I, I think back to even, just last season and there was some chatter that perhaps Brock would go into these negotiations x asking for 60, right? 60. 60 million. 60.1 million. Just, just to go into what the market dictated. Right. With Dak Prescott making the most in 60 million a year. But from what I understand that that is not at all how they negotiated this deal at all. And in fact, from what I can gather it, it seemed like both sides were, were just really realistic about who he is, where he's at where this team's at and also the needs of this team, knowing that they've made mistakes in the past with these contracts.
Mike Silver
Well, a couple things. First of all, as your colleague and as someone who consumes your content, you've been so on on this. And of course, Diana broke this story not too long ago at the Athletic on social media, as she often does. But I, you know, you have, you've been telling me very clearly how you think it's going down for months. And that is exactly how it went down. It was always going to happen around this time. And you know, they, they wanted to get Kittle done first. I think Purdy was the guy. Then they wanted to fall in line. And now I, I believe we'll see.
Unnamed Host
Fred Warner probably, I think Fred Warner will wind up being the highest paid linebacker in football. Right. He'll probably make a little bit more than Roquan Smith. I, you know, I could see that happening very soon. So they're getting done, they're, they're getting the business done on the players that they have absolutely prioritized.
Mike Silver
Well, and you brought up Trevor Lawrence. So I want to jump off there for a second. You know, I think a lot of people would, in football and out of football would look at Brock Purdy and Trevor Lawrence right now and go, oh, I want Trevor Lawrence over Brock Purdy. He's tall, he's got a great arm. He's the number one overall pick of the draft. I knew him in college. He was winning championships. You know, of course I'd rather have Trevor Lawrence than Brock Purdy. But a. I know a lot of football people who would see it the opposite. And that's not a dig on Trevor Lawrence, but he did have one epic playoff comeback. But Brock Purdy has been to a Super bowl, been to overtime against Patrick Mahomes in a Super bowl, been to two conference title games and finished in, I think top four of an MVP vote or three.
Unnamed Host
Top four.
Mike Silver
Yeah. Yeah. And so I think off just if you get over the draft status and the measurables, you, you would say Brock Purdy has done more thus far in his career to earn his money than Trevor Lawrence has not. The Trevor Lawrence doesn't have a chance to of course fulfill and make these.
Unnamed Host
Improvements with William Cohen and that whole new regime that you just spent quite a few days around the draft when you were embedded with Jacksonville. It was tremendous. If you haven't read that article, you should go back. It's a timeless piece with tons of info about the Jaguars direction, but Going back to we're seeing with the 49ers, I spoke with Fred Warner at the super bowl, and he looked right into my camera to tell me how great Brock Pie was and why he should get paid. And I've seen players back their cube before, but this. This was so genuine. This was. So this is the guy. This is who I think can lead us back to a Super Bowl. When you've been in the locker room and you've been around Brock, is there anything that maybe we don't see, feel, hear about Brock that you always notice?
Mike Silver
Yeah, I mean, he's a killer. You know, don't let the. The very amiable personality and the great values that he has as a person lull you into thinking that this guy is not a killer on the field. I remember he told me going into last season, we talked right at the start of training camp, and he talked about having a dominant mindset, and a bloody mindset, I think, was his word. And everyone was like, whoa. But that's who he is. And I gotta be honest, I had some inside info on him. And, you know, from my book, the why is Everything, which, by the way, Father's Day is coming. I know it's somewhere on your bookshelf.
Unnamed Host
It's on my bookshelf.
Mike Silver
You must. Maybe it's by your bed. Oh, there it is.
Unnamed Host
Right there by my bed. Yes.
Mike Silver
It's because you sleep so much, I'm sure, with your two little kids and your phone buzzing. But, yeah, I, I, you know, in reporting that book, and it's all in the book. I hope everybody reads this great book about the Shanahan McVeigh coaching tree and all its petty splendor.
Unnamed Host
But.
Mike Silver
But because I was spending a bunch of time with Mike Shanahan, Kyle's legendary father, in 2022, he started talking to me about Brock Purdy in May and June of 2022. They had drafted him 262nd overall. But Mike Shanahan had watched tape of OTAs at minicamp, and he was like, I see something. And he kept bringing them up. And there's a chapter in the book that's called, you don't let him out. And it. That quote, quote was from Mike Shanahan to me. Now it's the day before the 2022 season opener in Chicago, and I'm in Mike Shanahan's hotel room at the JW Marriott the day before, and Trey Lance is now the starter for the Niners. He's about to get his first start as the starter with Jimmy G back as his backup. And we're talking about Trey Lance. And Mike Shannon again turns the subject back to Brock Purdy. And he says to me, when you have a guy like that in your building, you don't let him out. And I'm, I'm looking at him going, I mean, are we talking about Rob Purdy? Because like, I, I know you're, you know, I've covered your Super Bowls and you're a brilliant offensive mind. Turns out Mike Shanahan still got it. Probably saw it before anyone, even before the Niners because they waited till 262 to pick them. They would obviously have taken him sooner.
Unnamed Host
I've always been curious too about internally how that conversation goes when they realize that Trey Lance isn't the guy. Right. And they are seeing this from Brock Purdy. They're not just seeing on the field, they're seeing it behind the scenes.
Mike Silver
Well, Jed York told this incredible story. So when the 49ers were getting ready to play the Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, before they went out to Vegas, Jed York did a big interview in the 49er press room and he told a story that was really illuminating. And what he said was, I remember in training camp of 2022, Kyle's kind of walking off the field and he and I were walking up together and Kyle made a point of coming up to me and he said, hey, listen, I think Brock's our best quarterback. And I think before too long, you know, that's going to end up, he's going to end up being the guy. And Jed really honestly said, you know, an owner doesn't love hearing that a guy you traded three first round picks to acquire with the third pick of the draft is, is not going to be your quarterback, but the guy you took at 262 the next year is actually better. But Kyle was right. Jed's on board now. And we have, what, 265 million reasons why this is no longer a matter.
Unnamed Host
You know, over $181 million in guaranteed money. Obviously that's always so important to players and, and even, even for Brock Purdy's agent, right. This was a really big deal for him and, and I, I think he will get a lot of praise for, for getting a deal done. And I really, you know, we, we love to look at these contracts and go, all right, who won? Oh, they stole this money from them or, or however you want to see it. I really think both sides are looking at this as this was really fair.
Mike Silver
Well, it's what may.
Unnamed Host
16Th.
Mike Silver
16Th. So everybody won.
Unnamed Host
Correct.
Mike Silver
Fans won.
Unnamed Host
That is a great one.
Mike Silver
Team won, especially the team. They've got this recent history of having these dragons so long and because he's quarterback a who wants to be in the building doing his thing every day. Brock Purdy won and you could tell when he showed up for the off season program like, hey, that was the.
Unnamed Host
That to me because there were a lot of rumors going around that they were really far apart on the deal. And I'm thinking no quarterback is showing up for OTAs if they don't feel good about most of the numbers. And I think this was just trying to get it over the goal line.
Mike Silver
And let me at least assure 49er fans of this because, you know, I've been around Brock pretty a lot. I've talked to him a lot, I've observed him a lot. Yeah, sure. You know, you can say, well, he's not the kind of quarterback who's going to do Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes things to, you know, carry a team on his shoulders just through his sheer physical skills. But, and again, I don't, I think he's better when he doesn't try to do too much. But this is a high, high level guy. One thing that I can assure everyone, having talked to him a lot and been around him a lot, this guy's not changing a. He is not. Money's not going to change him as a person. He's got his core values. He's kind of a, you know, he still walks around like he's going to class at Iowa State. It's unbelievable. Like with his backpack, like, dude, did you just get out of econ? What's going on? But he's also mindful of the law. I think he wanted to structure a deal that allowed them to stay aggressive, which they really have been. I think Jed York led the league in spending last year and over the last five years, but allowed them to stay aggressive with the cap to try to assemble, you know, talent around him. And he will stay that guy who believes that everybody overlooked him his whole life because they did. You know, I've written some cool stuff about how, you know, Arizona State, where he's from, at the last minute kind of got in in his recruiting and they were like, oh, hey. And he was like, nah, I'm sticking with Matt Campbell at Iowa State who were on me early. Yeah, you guys didn't really believe in me. You're just being told now because I'm getting some attention at the very end. Yeah, that you should go recruit the local. And I know every time he sets foot in that stadium in Glendale, Arizona, he carries that. And you know, well, I think the.
Unnamed Host
49Ers front office, the coaching staff, specifically Kyle Shannon, have got to be celebrating tonight. Brock Purdy and his family have got to be as well.
Mike Silver
And really, John lynch and paragraph, yeah, credit to them. They've taken some body blows when you know, Debo, Bosa, Kittle I all these deals last year, heaven forbid, iuk, Trent Williams, they went so late and there was so much noise that in this case, everybody got it done. They got it done quietly. They got it done in May. And everybody should be, you know, just feeling that ocean breeze and popping bottles, enjoying it.
Unnamed Host
All right, guys, so Brock party 49ers agreed to a 5 year, 265 million doll extension.
Mike Silver
We should go celebrate. We're together on the same When I fly across the country, I either want to be embedded in a draft room, which I was on my last trip, or embedded with our spouses in a restaurant where we wasn't sure we were.
Unnamed Host
Gonna go there, but I'm excited for that. Full disclosure, Mike did not fly to New Jersey where we are right now for the Brock Party deal. He is here because we are going out to celebrate after a really good, successful season together at the Athletics. So this worked out Great. Congratulations to 49ers. 49ers fans. Thanks out with us here on Scoop City. We will see you guys next week. Mike, thanks for hanging out. So good Bye, guys.

Scoop City: A Show About the NFL
Episode: EMERGENCY POD: Brock Purdy, 49ers Agree to 5-Year Contract Extension
Release Date: May 16, 2025
In this urgent episode of Scoop City, hosted by The Athletic, Senior NFL Insider Dianna Russini and longtime NFL quarterback Chase Daniel delve deep into the latest blockbuster news: the San Francisco 49ers' agreement to a 5-year, $265 million contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy. This deal marks a significant moment for both Purdy and the 49ers, solidifying Purdy's role as the franchise's cornerstone moving forward.
Brock Purdy, who was initially drafted as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft (262nd overall), rapidly emerged as a pivotal player for the 49ers. His ascent began when he stepped in as the starting quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo's injury, leading the team to remarkable playoff performances, including an appearance in the Super Bowl.
Mike Silver [02:22]: "Brock Purdy, they've had a great deal on Brock Purdy to this point. It's now time for Brock Purdy to have that financial security and he earned it."
The recent contract extension offers Purdy $265 million over five years, providing over $181 million in guaranteed money. This deal not only reflects Purdy's on-field contributions but also underscores the 49ers' commitment to building a competitive team around him.
Unnamed Host [02:10]: "We will see you guys next week. Mike, thanks for hanging out. So good Bye, guys."
Mike Silver [05:01]: "They've got five years, 265 million. They got the biggest deal done that they needed to get done here."
The negotiation process was marked by strategic timing and mutual understanding between Purdy's representatives and the 49ers' front office. Both parties approached the deal with realism, acknowledging Purdy's value while considering the team's financial landscape.
Unnamed Host [04:13]: "He's right in that Jared Golf salary to a. You know, and the Trevor Lawrence number was I think the number most thought he would land at."
Mike Silver [05:54]: "It was always going to happen around this time. It was just trying to get it over the goal line."
A significant portion of the discussion contrasts Purdy's achievements with those of other quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence. Despite Purdy being a late draft pick, his on-field performance, including a Super Bowl appearance and multiple MVP votes, arguably surpasses that of higher-drafted peers.
Mike Silver [06:08]: "Brock Purdy has done more thus far in his career to earn his money than Trevor Lawrence has not."
Purdy's leadership qualities and consistent performance have earned him respect both on and off the field. His genuine personality and killer instinct make him a favorite among teammates and a reliable leader for the 49ers.
Mike Silver [07:37]: "He is not. Money's not going to change him as a person. He's got his core values."
The 49ers' front office, including Kyle Shanahan, Jed York, and John Lynch, receive accolades for their strategic decisions in securing Purdy's future with the team. Their ability to negotiate effectively and prioritize team needs has been pivotal in maintaining the 49ers' competitive edge.
Unnamed Host [13:53]: "49ers front office, the coaching staff, specifically Kyle Shannon, have got to be celebrating tonight."
Mike Silver [11:52]: "They've taken some body blows... they were so late and there was so much noise that in this case, everybody got it done."
The 5-year, $265 million contract extension for Brock Purdy represents a win-win scenario for both the quarterback and the San Francisco 49ers. Purdy gains long-term security, while the 49ers solidify their roster with a proven leader poised to drive the team back to Super Bowl contention. The seamless negotiation and mutual respect between all parties involved highlight the 49ers' dedication to building a sustainable and successful future.
Unnamed Host [14:29]: "All right, guys, so Brock party 49ers agreed to a 5 year, 265 million dollar extension."

Unnamed Host [11:03]: "Over $181 million in guaranteed money. That's always so important to players and even for Brock Purdy's agent."
