Welcome in to Scoop City on a Wednesday. I'm James Palmer. We are going to be doing mid season awards. I'll get to what that means in just a second. Don't forget to like and subscribe Please. We'll love you for it. We are going to go through kind of some mid season superlatives, but high school yearbook style. I'm going to see what Diana want because she's going to be joining me.
B
Also.
A
We're going to talk about maybe some trades that could happen before the deadline, some things to keep your eye on, maybe some bigger names. Maybe a couple things need to fall for that to happen. Also, have the Ravens put themselves in a position to save their season. We'll get to that. That. And when I say we, that means my fellow Johnny Cash lover in black, Diana Rossini, the senior athletic NFL insider. There she is. We're both kind of just in black today. I don't know why, but it's. It works. It works today.
B
Please.
A
Perfect. This works. This totally works. We're going to go through Diana, some. Some high school superlatives. NFL style coming up. Did you win anything in high school? In terms.
B
I did. I got. I won Most likely to win Survivor.
A
That's a phenomenal one. We might have to add that to our list on which NFL player would most likely win Survivor. I like that. Okay, that's good. That's good. I like it.
B
I have some thoughts too already. I have some good answers. Like, I actually thought, like, I, I really want to be an amazing Race. Like, oh, who you choose as a partner is everything. Tells you a lot. It's everything. I actually think you and I would be great at it together.
A
I think we crush it against other podcast, hopefully ones at the Athletic don't sit a chance. Let's go.
B
Robert Mays.
A
Yeah, sorry, Dave, you're not. You don't have a thing coming towards us. Let's get to what we're hearing. Diana, what are we hearing right now? Big news this morning on a Wednesday. Aiden Hutchinson signs a massive four year, $180 million, $141 million guaranteed contract with the Detroit Lions. Give me the deets outside of the ones that were provided by his agent this morning. Mike McCartney.
B
Mike McCartney. He's so good. He. He is the only agent that tweets out the information. It's. It's actually my favorite thing sometimes because you're never going to get beat because the agent's always going to tweet it out.
A
Mike's got it. Yeah.
B
Yeah. But he is fantastic. And he's kept everybody, I think, up to date over the last few weeks that this deal would get done. It was really just a matter of time and, and we see this go down and of course it's going to be compared to the Micah Parsons contract immediately as you see it, because it continues to rise as the numbers are just. Are just pretty wild. Aiden gets about, I don't know, a little. A little over a million dollars more in guaranteed money. But it's close to the Michael Parsons deal, which. Which I think we could all argue. Parsons got paid a great deal and Aiden Hutchinson is worth every single dollar. And you look at this Lions team like he is a pillar to this defense and. And such a crucial part. And just the fact that he's coming off this significant injury and still able to perform the way he is and get a payday. James, like it wasn't. It was just a few years ago where we would have these conversations about once players are injured, you know, they completely not destroyed their markets, but they were never going to be the same or get the money. And look at him. He worked hard, got back, and now one of the highest paid players in football.
A
Yeah, it's been a remarkable thing. And we know just. It's more than just what happens in that locker room with Aiden Hutchinson and what happens in the community, the entire city of Detroit, you and I have been there since he's been acquired by that team. And it's just a different feel when you have that type of player around your organization. Real quick, before we move into the trade stuff, this doesn't change anything in my understanding about what they want to maybe possibly add some pieces to that defense as well in Detroit.
B
Yeah, they are also looking at a pass rusher and a corner. Those are two specific positions that they've been making some calls around the league for. And you're right, it does not change at all because these are needs. He can't do it all. By the way, we will talk probably the next few episodes before the trade deadline about needs. And you're going to hear me talk a lot about defense. So let's keep it going.
A
I love it. I love it. Because you did say the other day when, when you broke the McCreary news on our show, Lions were involved in that they were one of the teams that was kind of poking around corner. That shows you exactly what you're saying. Let's get into what you're hearing about some of these trades and everybody wants to know and I think we got to maybe just have this conversation to put it, you know, not to bed, but in the right spot.
B
Okay.
A
Why do we not see a whole lot of big names potentially moving at this deadline? Last year we saw Devonte Adams maybe Because him and Aaron Rodgers were borderline in cahoots about how this was going to go down there, that he was going to be on the move. But this year kind of set the record straight down about bigger name players. Whether it's Trey Hendrickson or Max Crosby or any of these type of guys, why we most likely won't see them on the move.
B
Most of them don't want to be moved. Right. So most of them want to stay with their team. So it's as simple as that to start. Secondly, these players are usually not available from the teams. The teams don't want to deal them. The Raiders have been adamant for years that they're not moving Max Crosby. I spoke to Mark Davis last week and I think at this point he just is annoyed by me when I ask him. Like, he's just. He doesn't even answer because it's just.
A
Like, just, how dare you.
B
But I know what he means, right? And I know Max wants to be there. I think Max is a competitor and he obviously wants to win a Super bowl, but he believes that he can do that in, in Vegas at some point. We obviously know the, the reality and they are far from that. Myles Garrett, he's another player. He's got a no trade clause written in his contract. Even though there's lots of buzz about perhaps them moving him, he wants to be there, they want to keep him there. And by the way, I did, I did make some calls on this last night because I don't know, sometimes Twitter, Twitter rumors are fun to chase down just to see.
A
Yeah, it gives you a reason to call. Like, hey, tell me.
B
It's like, hey, check in. The best is when they're right. You're gonna be like, oh my gosh, they were onto something. We saw the Patriots last night do back to back trades. I, I expect them to, to be sellers, perhaps, you know, even more here. I expect them to be buyers too. Right. Because I think the direction of this Patriots team now has changed completely from what it was in the summer to where they are now winning five straight here and obviously having remarkable performances from Drake. May so pass rushers across the league, if you can find them, there are teams that will be interested. Unfortunately, the ones that are available aren't really drawing that much interest.
A
Yeah, exactly. And one quick thing I have on New England, talking to somebody last night, I wouldn't be surprised if they look at running back maybe as an addition to that backfield, maybe being something that they could look for depth in. In that sense, I'm not saying they're blowing anything out of the water, but maybe a little depth. And that's about. That was a little birdie told me that last night. How about week nine, Diana, and how that impacts this because we might be kind of, you know, just kind of easy breezy a little bit. Right now you have the Aiden Hutchinson move. But how much does Sunday and what transpires on Sunday impact the way these conversations change come? Maybe Sunday night, Monday?
B
I had the exact conversation with the general manager yesterday afternoon that we're good. This Sunday's games will determine which teams are going to become buyers or sellers and, and some have an idea of what they want to be. Those that are obviously ahead here and, and are winning and know what they are are already scanning the market. But there are some teams right on the border where this is going to determine a lot of, of what the future is going to look like. But the reality is, James, like I, I, I am excited for the trade deadline because you never know and things can happen. And right now, you know, we could say that it's going to be dead and then in an hour it could all change. But I just have consistently been getting the same thing, which is don't expect that many fireworks. Don't expect some big name. We'll see some move, so some movement, but I don't think we're going to get one of those. You know, obviously Micah Parsons size trade.
A
Okay, okay. Well, everybody can dream. Everybody wants to know if their team's acquiring players. Like, no matter, like who the fan is a fan of. I feel like they're all like, like, what are we doing?
B
Right. The Jags, you know, they want to make a move. They're antsy. Right. You got a new general manager. Learn from Les Sneed.
A
They want where he comes from.
B
Yeah, yeah. And sometimes that's like a great way to even piece it together of what their styles are. So they're going to be trying to get in there. I think Baltimore sniffing around for some defense as well. We saw obviously the Rams made that trade, so they feel good there at corner. But like we mentioned, the Lions are going to be in. The Saints are getting lots of calls on their offensive weapons. I don't expect them to miss to, to move Chris Alave. They've been trying to work on a deal. We'll see if they can continue good conversations there to get a deal done. But wide receivers, another position. That is another position that teams are eyeing. Like, all right, we need a pass catcher. But again, availability is the problem. This year, it's. There's just not a lot out there.
A
Yeah. I was talking to a coach from another team that said, man, if Shahid winds up with the Bills, look out. That's exactly what they're looking for. We know they're looking for a boundary receiver. They were looking for it last year, Diana. They gave up a third round pick for Amari Cooper. And I remember talking to people in Cleveland that were like, I can't believe we got a third round pick for Amari. Like, we was never going to be part of our plans in 2025. But that's how desperate kind of Brandon Bean was. And it has a similar feel this year that they understand. Understand this offense is not working without any sort of threat along the boundary. That could be a team. The Steelers could be a team that's obviously poking around at a compliment to DK Metcalf. Could Jacoby Myers potentially be on the move? I think that is a position that we are kind of keeping our eye on. Certainly. Do you have a specific team that you think might be a sleeper? We're not talking about it much. I mentioned those two teams as being ones looking for receivers, but maybe somebody that's lying in the weeds. Is Denver kind of lying in the weeds going, hey, we're at the first place in the division right now. Maybe we need a spot. Do you see a team that maybe is not getting enough attention that might make a move that's somewhere across this league?
B
I do think the Chiefs are still looking on defense. They're still sniffing around. I do think the Broncos are looking on the offensive side of the ball. We talked about it last show. That tight end makes a lot of sense for them.
A
They signed an old one. They signed an oldie.
B
41. Nothing against 41. Oh, wait, I'm not even 41. I'm 42.
A
Oh, I'm 42 as well. I thought I was 41 for a second.
B
You did it too.
A
But I. That's why I pointed at myself. I actually am 42 as well.
B
We have hit that age. I remember when my mom started to forget how old they were. Like, yep. And. And we. We have arrived.
A
I just did it. I just did it. We're there. We're there. Crap. Our chances at Amazing Race are dwindling by the day.
B
I think if the Giants were in a better position, I think that they were going to. Thibodeau is not available. From what I was told, there was a little bit of chatter about that.
A
These last two weeks were. Went differently. You Mean, for. For.
B
Yeah, I think, yeah. Yeah. If they had won those games, if they beat Denver, which they should have, and if they beat the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles. I'm glad that that just came up naturally. They. They're looking on defense. They need a pass rusher so badly, and they know it, and the league knows it. And, And. And how he's working the phones, trying to get one.
A
I love it. And one thing they do in Philly and just a little inside baseball here that I love about that organization is Howie Roseman has a history of listening, which is not always the case with general managers. He listens to Vic Fangio. If he. If Vic comes to him and says, I think we need this, he will try to make it work. That's not always the case, Diana. In every single building like that, you listen to your coordinators to that extent. But I think Vic has pelts on the wall and I think how he knows the knee is there, obviously at Ed Rusher. But I do like the dialogue that went on with the previous draft and how well that went. That was a lot of inp foot from that side of the ball. To my understanding, that was towards Quinion Mitchell and Cooper De Jean, and those were guys that guys on that staff really loved and how he listened. And look, what's the way it's worked. I think Philly is one to really keep an eye on. The BG move, to my understanding, was not changing by any stretch, are we, Callie Roseman?
B
Too much credit, Is that what you're saying? I'm just kidding.
A
I don't think I am. Because, you know, who gives him the credit is like, if you talk to people in other buildings, right? They're like, God, Philly just does it, right? A lot of times. You ever hear that, like, it's just like, oh, that building. They just do things kind of.
B
I mean. I mean, it comes with a couple other descriptions, but, yes, it then eventually gets to how he does a good job. But the Eagles are a pain in the ass to everybody.
A
Certainly. Let's go to the Minnesota Vikings here in this quarterback room. I know you've been some. Doing some digging and seeing what's going on there. Obviously, first off, Carson Wentz, maybe Herbie, my guy, fellow Buckeye, might want to take back a couple of things he said on Thursday night about the frustrations that. That Carson had because he was dealing with an insane injury to his left shoulder that not all of us knew until now he has done for the season. And what he was playing through was Unbelievable that he was even out. Where do we stand now with jj? And I feel like you have some nuggets here for us after some digging about what's going on there.
B
Yeah, J.J. mcCarthy had to get through some hurdles here to. To get cleared essentially, to be ready to go and play. And he. He's done those right. So he. He's expected to get this start against the Detroit Lions. And look, they're. They're in a weird position right now because there's a lot of pressure on JJ now because Carson Wentz obviously is on IR right now. They don't have a lot of options here, and they need to see what J.J. can do. We saw that incredible quarter against the Chicago Bears, and that is, of course, what a sentence.
A
Incredible quarter.
B
But that version of JJ is, I think, what they love about him, and I think they just want to see more of it because we obviously saw the other side to this. Injuries were part of this having a baby. We've had, like, we've so many things thrown at McCarthy. I just think the next few weeks are going to tell you a lot about how the Minnesota Vikings feel about them and the future of J.J. mcCarthy. Like, I don't think that this is going to be one of these, oh, let's. Let's get through this season and give them another year. I think they really want to see what he can do over the next few weeks with full weeks of practice, being healthy, and of course, with Kevin o', Connell, who's had so much success with so many different quarterbacks over the last few years. So this is a pivotal moment for the Minnesota Vikings. I really think so. They. They're a good team. They just need good quarterback play, and JJ can provide that.
A
Yeah. And you went all the way back to the baby and everything. He hadn't practiced. I don't know if he still has because we're doing this on a Wednesday. Can. Full participant in consecutive days since week one, like, it just hasn't happened. And so they want him to get out there. They want him to be a full participant. You know, the way that this offense is designed, he needs actually for minors, he needs JJ McCarthy's feet to be good. That's a big part of the way that Kevin o' Connell runs this offense. And a lot of the stuff that goes over the middle feet, eyes everywhere. It needs to be. And they need to see some consecutive practices put together to have this happen. Okay, we have. Coming up on Scoop City. Diana, as you work the phones continuously stay there. I will stay right here we are going to do high school superlatives. These are going to be superlatives for midway point of the NFL season. But in the version of maybe your 1990s high school yearbook, a tangible one. I don't know, they might be digital now. We'll see. James Palmer, Diane Rossini with you. And we teased it a couple of times because I think we're so excited about it. Diana, you were voted most likely to what? Win Survivor, which is such a weird. Rather a cutthroat individual. In high school.
B
I know. I was like, do I eat bugs? Yeah, I. I remember hating it like when I got. When the votes came back because I figured I'd win best athlete, but I didn't win, so I thought you'd win. I know my friend Christy won. I played four sports. Chrissy played three, but she was so. She's still so good. I know. She's one of my good friends, so it's fine. What about you?
A
Yeah, it doesn't seem to. Doesn't seem to bother you at all to this day?
B
No, not at all. I'm not competitive.
A
It's funny you brought it up. Do you know what I won senior year?
B
Oh, my God. I. Best all around.
A
Best athlete. No, athlete. Yeah, Best athlete played.
B
I didn't even know you were an athlete.
A
Oh, man. Come on. We'll talk offline about my high school accolades because nobody wants to hear those except you. And I played four sports too. Soccer, football, basketball, and baseball. All right, here we go. We're going to get in to these kind of off the wall ones. Matt created these, so China bear with me. Most unexpected glow up. That's essentially the biggest surprise. Maybe somebody that went from, I didn't see this turning into this. Who do you have?
B
I mean, how could you not have this one? I would think that you would want this. You would cast your vote here. At least it was close to the one you picked. Daniel Jones, quarterback for the tremendous. Did not see that one coming. We'd heard good things in camp, even going back to when he was with Minnesota, we heard that he had some good practices. Like, I remember thinking, wait, what are we talking about here? But you just heard all this good stuff about him head into the season and now connected with Shane Steichen, with Jonathan Taylor, with a great offensive line with Tyler Warren. To me, this has been the best glow up. This is not the Daniel Jones I knew in New York.
A
I love it. I love it. My pick, Jackson Smith and Jigba out there in Washington leading the NFL and receiving. Have you ever seen the movie she's all that starring Freddie Prinze Jr. Remember when Laine Boggs is an art girl and she has glasses and her hair's up and she's covered in pain all the time. Well, guess what? Surprise, surprise. Hollywood pulls a fast one on us. Diana and takes her glasses off, pulls her hair down. And now Laney Boggs is running for homecoming queen. That's Jackson Smith at Jigba. We just didn't realize it. We should have been in the art studio and realized that he had all this, that they got rid of DK Metcalf and they were comfortable with it. They got rid of Lockett. They were comfortable with it. He may not look like a one. He is a surefire number one. And we should have had our eyes open for Laney Boggs, AKA Smith and Jigba. How about Most Likely to Succeed? Okay, this is a common yearbook one right here. This is a common yearbook one.
B
I can't get enough of the Colts. So for me, it's Jonathan, let's go. I mean, he. He's like. He's the Saquon of this year, right? Like, he's on track for accomplishing just as much. He's carrying such a heavy load on this offense. And I feel like, and I'll speak for myself and the rest of the world, I have underestimated Jonathan Taylor in years past. Almost as if when I rank my running backs, which I don't like to do rankings, but when I do them in my head, I have forgotten about him or I put him in a number. That isn't fair. Why? Is it because of Indy? Is it like. And now I'm like. I have a hard time naming other running backs now that he's so good. It's like. It's just Jonathan Taylor to me, you know? So to me, he is most likely to succeed. And I think we're to continue to talk about him and maybe he can make a case for mvp.
A
I love that. I love that. And maybe, you know, Saquon Barkley did you mentioned him. And he got himself a nice little pay raise after that season. Let's see what happens with Jonathan Taylor's contract after this year. We'll see. You might. Maybe we should dig on that a little bit. Okay. I'm gonna go with Patrick Mahomes. Diana, have you ever seen the feature film Armageddon? I think you see a theme here with what?
B
I'm going back to movies that I've seen. These are. These are right in genre.
A
These are your jams. These are your jams right here. We had them all on dvd. We had them in the cases. We popped them open, we threw them in. And you saw AJ Frost starred by the Grant. Ben Affleck on the spaceship telling everybody, remember, Harry will do it. I know Harry doesn't know how to fail. That's Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes does not know how to fail. He goes to the AFC championship game every single year. It doesn't matter. Nothing slows him down. Whether it's a slow defense certain years, whether he has no weapons certain years, whether there's gassy compacted parts within a meteor that's trying to blow up the earth, it doesn't faze him. He can do anything. He can accomplish anything. He's very Harry Stamper, played by Bruce Willis.
B
I always imagined that scene with Liv Tyler with the animal crackers. I've never looked at animal crackers.
A
Right, the open planes. Yeah. When she. When she puts her hand up on the screen. I always thought her fingers were freakishly long and huge, though.
B
Yeah, they weren't really kind of. You know, I have really biggest. And I remember being seen. I remember going, oh, my God, those look like my hands. And at the time I had a big crush on Ben Affleck, so I was just dreaming.
A
Oh, man, I remember being seen. Okay, speaking of a couple dynamic duo of Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck in the great film, the documentary Armageddon, how about best couple? This was always a popular one on the back page of the yearbook. Best couple, Diana.
B
Best couple. For me, I'm doing this just based on what I think is actual true love. Not superficial love, not anyone taking advantage of the other. It's not even lust. It's true love. It's Brian Dable and Jackson Dart of the New York Giants.
A
I think you are right. I think you're right.
B
I think they make out on the sidelines sometimes. Oh, they obviously don't, but they hug a lot and went into the blue tent. Everyone had said to me when they took Jackson that that Dart's personality is perfect for Brian Dable. And I wasn't really sure what that meant. And now I see it, and now I'm like, okay, I get it. Like, I think there's a little crazy there. But the good kind of crazy for. For that relationship to work. It's fiery, it's intense, it's competitive. They've been my favorite couple this season.
A
I love it. I'm going back to the cinema. Diana, have you ever seen and did you cry at the movie? A star is born when our man Jackson Maine hangs himself in the garage. Just tragic. Tragic. But Jackson, Maine had been around the bath block. Diana oh, it was the worst. But Jackson may have been around the block. He was a legend. He's worked with some of the great artists of all time. He finds this young phenom, this young alley, this phoenix rising with this voice in this running building. What does he do? He arranges everything with his band to create the song shallow for the two of them to sing together. That is Josh McDaniels and that is Drake May. Josh has been around. He's worked with some of the greatest of all time in Tom Brady. My understanding is behind the closed doors, Diana. He kind uses that to his advantage. Hey, we did this with Tom Brady. And then if you're Drake May, you're going, oh, wait, if he did that with Tom Brady and he thinks he can do it with me, he must think pretty highly of me, right? If I can do the same things. My understanding is they have set him up to succeed brilliantly with the stuff that they've done to increase his accuracy, whether that's the type of routes they have certain guys running, the type of throws they have him running to really put him in a position to succeed. Very Jackson, Maine. Very Ally. Hopefully there's a far different conclusion to this relationship than the one that went on in A Star is Born because JP was little ball of emotions for that one. How about speaking of this? From the feature films to now, the TVs, the small screens, who's the. Who's the guy in the league right now that has the greatest chance of being a future TV star?
B
A future television. I would have probably said scatter.
A
Boo.
B
Right? But.
A
Oh, yeah, yeah, right.
B
He just. He's such a. He's got a personality that you're like, I. I want, I want to know more. But because he's hurt, we'll say with players and. And I hope the best for him. I'm gonna go with Baker Mayfield. He is the really good pick.
A
It's a really good pick.
B
I hate commercials in general. I love every Baker commercial because he's so good at it. Like, he is a naturally talented actor. And I look forward, like when he hangs it up and we hear that he went into acting, I'm like, great. Can't wait to see his movies. Like, I bet you he's a star. So to me, for just simple reasons of those commercials, he's my pick.
A
I love that one. I think you can go back and go on YouTube, anybody and watch this. I didn't he dress up like in full buck fans and like this whole like prosthetic face and Everything. I think he. He, like, went and, like, hung out with a bunch of Bucks fans as, like, a fake person.
B
Did you see the one with Justin Jefferson? They dressed him up like a photographer, and they had him. So it's Justin Jefferson dressed as a photographer, and he's taking pictures of Kwesi. Kwesi thinks he's doing, like, headshots for the Vikings, and he's like, man, you paid Justin a lot of money, huh? He's like. In case. He's like. I mean, yeah, he's great. He's like, oh, no. He's a. You know, like, he's, like, getting it up. And then finally, Kwesi realized it was Justin, and he was like, oh, my God.
A
Oh, my God. That's outstanding. I love it. I love it. We all knew Nate Burleson was going to be a superstar when he was playing dynamic, if you remember. And then when he got into media, now he's just taking it all over. It was just so easy to see. I think we're seeing it with a current player, too. Travis Kelsey was just in an Adam Sandler movie. I mean, it's the worst of the Adam Sandler movies. I've seen. Little Nikki. Happy Gilmore, too, is dreadful, but he's been in an Adam Sandler movie already. I think he's got his way to the. To the small screen here. So I'm gonna go with. With Travis Kelsey. Thoughts?
B
Yeah, I don't think anything scares him anymore. I mean, you're married to the biggest star on the planet. I don't think doing some movie is gonna really freak him out. Yeah, yeah.
A
This is tv.
B
Like, he. He. Nothing bothers him except great not getting them all or losing in the Super Bowl. But just like things outside of that, he just. He's such a mentally strong human being anyways and obviously does not care what people think.
A
No, he does not. Okay. Most likely to run for office. Who? This is kind of coach of the year here. Most likely run for office. And we all had a kid in high school that we thought was going to be the next President United States. For some reason, we thought they would be just because they were dominated. Student government.
B
Definitely don't think my pick could ever run for office. So let me be clear. I just think he's done the best job in his position. Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers head coach, has been pretty masterful in dealing with all the different injuries on both sides of the ball with Mac Jones coming in a quarterback that all thought was done. Maybe not Done. But we didn't think he had this. I know they're coming off a loss here, but I have such a firm belief that Kyle Shanahan, as long as he's play calling, they will find ways to win as long as Christian McCaffrey can stay out there. Brock Purdy gets back here for week nine, which it seems to be on target for that. The 49ers season will not die as long as they've got these guys. Look, at some point the rubber meets the road and is going to be tough. They're looking for some more pass rush help, but I think with as long as Kyle can continue to do a masterful job on offense, he's my pick.
A
Yeah, that's a great pick. They've been without so many pieces. I mean, just one after another and then certain positions just hit harder than others and it's just been maybe I'm Patriots heavy here. I'm going Mike Vrabel. We thought this team was going to win four games. And I'll stick with my theme here. I don't know if it's working or not, but I love doing it. We've seen. Seen Independence Day, Diana. Staying right with your wheelhouse, right? Seeing Independence Day, James.
B
Just spend the weekends here. Like, we will watch movies all weekend because we will. Like we will watch the same ones. Line them up and not these movies. He hates all the. He loves dying.
A
Oh, my God.
B
Like, boring stuff about life. I'm like, who cares? Put the Fugitive on.
A
Yeah, seriously. I'll even watch the Second Fugitive with Wesley Snipes. I don't care. I'll watch that with him and Robert Downey Jr. Where it's on a TR. I'll do it. Come on. But it's gold. Remember this. There's only one guy that can defeat these aliens that come and invade the planet. It's that guy that slapped Chris Rock in the face. And he's flying around up there with all of them and we can't beat him. But until the president comes, gives this giant speech, right? And he gives the speech, we will not go quietly into the night. And then he gets in his flight suit and he flies, too, to beat the aliens. You're not telling me that Mike Vrabel couldn't give a similar speech and in turn turn, put the pads back on and give you 15 snaps on Sunday. I bet you're very well if you give you 15 snaps.
B
I think that's probably why they respond to him so well, right? It's like, yeah, this guy's done it. You're like, hey, he's done a three. He's got three super bowl rings, and he's been to five Super Bowls. Right. But also the fact that he can still kind of. I mean, he's 50, but he can still do it. Yeah. Yeah. I also think he's kind of guilty of one of those people that. That thinks they're younger than they are. You know what I mean? Doesn't he remind you of, like, that friend that thinks that they're still in their 20s? You're like, Nope, in there.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah. They. I love the way they're responding. I. I've never actually seen this version of Rabel. I think you probably have because you've spent more time around him over. Over your reporting years. But just like, the dancing on the sideline, like, I've never seen that. Like. Yeah, I think it's great. I mean, he's obviously having fun.
A
It's. It's been really great to watch. Okay. Most light will speed these last two up. Most likely to steal your girl.
B
Girl.
A
When I look at this, I said, that's never in the back of a yearbook. Like, who's the guy to steal your girl?
B
Translation of it is more like, I.
A
Think the dark horse, essentially the team that's coming from nowhere, maybe that we don't see, you know?
B
Okay. That's good. Yeah. I'm actually. You're not gonna like this one. I don't think the Houston Texans. Okay. Oh. Think they have sorted themselves out. I don't think it's perfect. I think it's moving and trending in the right space. It's just. I think the first two months here for this team was a lot of transition with an offensive line that's not very good, with a new play caller, new players on offense. It. It's just been a little bit. It just needed a little time. I think C.J. stroud needed a little time to adjust to all the change. And I think this version of the Houston Texans, I don't think we're going to be messing around with them come late December. I think these. These guys are going to find it.
A
I like it. And also, like, nobody was paying attention. This defense is unbelievable. We expect them to be unbelievable. But the offense was, like, so bad. Everybody stopped paying attention. That, yes.
B
So true.
A
Was what we thought they were going to be. We just stopped paying attention to the team as a whole. I love that you brought them up. They're giving up seven points a game.
B
Relegate.
A
Yeah, relegate them. Yeah, get them out of here. Oh, wait, you're giving up 14 points a game. Like, you're been outstanding on defense. I'm gonna go with an individual player. I think we've kind of written off Josh Allen a little bit. I think we're going. Okay. We got some. We got some new hip things going on in the afc, whether it's the Broncos or the. Or the Colts or the Patriots. I think Josh Allen's gonna come back here. Should I use a movie reference again? And I know you're gonna love this one.
B
You are phenomenal right now, so you.
A
Can do as much fiber for me. Okay.
B
Oh, my God. Ready?
A
Josh Allen is John Beckwith. John Beckwith, played by the great Owen Wilson in the. The comedy Smash Wedding Crashers. Like, he's rolling in the beginning, right?
B
He's.
A
He's dancing. He's going to every single. Every single wedding imaginable. And then all of a sudden, he hits a railroad spike in sack played by the great Bradley Cooper, and hammers him in the back of a. An alley in the face with a fist. And says, hey, stay away from my girl. And he's down to the dumps. He's reading Don't Kill Myself books. He's meeting with Will Fer, and guess what? He comes back in at the end, swoops in, gets a little help from his friends, which maybe they need a little help to get exactly where they want to get to in the playoffs. And Vince Vaughn smack Zach right there at the altar. I think. I think, you know, we got Josh Allen. I think he's upset with the way the offense is playing. I think he knows they have an issue that they need to find a way to correct. We'll see if they can. But there are enough things there around him. He's just not being able to be himself the last couple of weeks. And if he gets that back, maybe they make a.
B
A move.
A
Maybe Bean makes a move to help them out and we see the return. Because I feel like we're writing off the MVP and the Bills a little bit, Diana. I feel like we're writing them off a little bit. That's what I'm going with then.
B
This is a big weekend for them. This is a big game monster.
A
This is so much bigger for them than the Chiefs. Like, so much bigger.
B
And I talked to someone with the Chiefs yesterday morning, was like, we are so confident right now. We are playing in, like, they are in such a good mental space right now. Now, which scares me for Buffalo, because I don't Know if Buffalo feels that way, they could coming off this pounding of the Panthers. But when the. In the years past when the Chiefs have shared that they've got their ducks in a row, it's like, oh, boy, look out.
A
Yeah. It's like the Death Star. Okay. Most popular kid in school. The mvp. The most popular kid in school. In school. I'm trying to think who the most popular kid in our school was, but go ahead. Who's your most popular pick for the NFL?
B
Where are they now? Is the better question.
A
Yeah, good point.
B
I'm gonna. I'm gonna back into your grouping of the New England Patriots. You've given them tons of love. I. Drake May. I think he's blown the doors off what he's doing every single week.
A
I love it. Yeah.
B
And I saw Jon Gruden describe him as Tom Brady would. Like legs, like, with wheels.
A
Are you saying Tom Brady.
B
Slow.
A
The greatest quarterback.
B
So, no, Tom Brady with wheels.
A
He's not getting anywhere now.
B
Yeah, right. Look, it's early. I have a feeling this will probably change come December. But for right now, he has my vote for just the fact that he's been able to handle more every single week, too. I think that's another part. And you look around at. At the cast that he's surrounded by, they're good. They're not great. And I think what he's been able to figure out with these guys has been pretty tremendous.
A
I love it. I'm going to go back to somebody you had earlier as the most likely to succeed is my most popular. My buddy in high school, Ryan, was just the nicest guy in the world. Very different than me, but he was beloved by everyone. And he won homecoming king, and everybody was just like, that is the right pick. Like, you know, there's kids that, you know, the football stars and everything. And then he won. Everybody's like, you know what? That is the right guy to win.
B
Yes.
A
It makes sense. Jonathan Taylor just makes sense. Like, everybody just goes, you know what? Like you were saying it. As you were saying it. I was thinking of my pick here being like, Diana's kind of saying everything that I would say the same thing about China. He's always just been there, and he has been good. And he won offensive player of the year in, what, 2021, I think it was. And he. He has four. Four games this year with three touchdowns. Is that right? Like, it's. It's. It's unbelievable what he's doing. And I think everybody's just going, you know what? He has Always been good. He really has. And we just haven't paid attention. And he, he has a chance now to like, everybody likes Jonathan Taylor and everybody should. And that's my most popular.
B
Yeah. On another episode of the show, I would like you to explain to the audience all the different nicknames that your friends have and how they get those nicknames. Because I.
A
You sent me what, you texted me one of the nicknames the other day and you said, is this guy's really nickname this? And I was like, I don't think.
B
Our listeners or our viewers know that. I don't think we ever said it. That my husband has mutual friends of James's. So our world's on top of each other. So I know a lot about James and James knows a lot about my family. And we didn't know this until this like our world. Worlds were. Our worlds collided like this and it's. It's spectacular.
A
Well, I remember when you. I remember when I talked to you. Mac, you can cut this if you want. I remember when you talked to me, you're like, I met this guy, like, and you guys, you and Kev started dating and you were like, I really like him. And really. And I was like, I'm starting to put the pieces together. And I'm like, I think I know. I think my boy. I think I know this guy. I think I know who this guy is.
B
I know Stefanski did the same thing. Like, I know this guy. Like, well, first of all, it's not like Kev doesn't represent. There's like 50 Kevs in Philly. Right. Like, it's not. It just. You have to figure out which one he was. Which.
A
He's. That one. Yep, exactly. Oh, I forgot one real quick. Just give me. Give me the player and then everybody can know it. Best hair. Best hair.
B
Juwan Jennings. Did you see the red dye?
A
Yeah.
B
He's having fun. I like it. I don't know if that's for Halloween or style, but I'm digging it.
A
I like it a lot. I'm going with the real life modern day Thor in Tyler Warren. And that just flow is. That's something else right now. He might be rookie of the year. Perfect. All right, coming up when we come back, we are going to be getting Chris Branch, which is, you know, Diana and I love when we talk to Chris because we always over evaluate his background setup. He moved the pipes, by the way, from the last time I talked about the pipes and I don't know if I had any part to do with that. Welcome back to Scoop City on a Wednesday. James Palm with a very Farrah Fawcett, Diana Rossini with me. By the way, that should maybe be a Halloween situation. Maybe we got with this coffee. It looks outstanding. We have on Wednesdays always a question given to us. Chris Branch is going to give us a question here. Chris. Fire away Mac. Roll it. Hello Scoop City friends, I am coming to you. Extremely exhausted on a Tuesday because I stayed up till 3am covering a baseball game last night and it got me thinking about overtime and how NFL overtime has been discussed this year year a lot. We've had a tie. Would you rather NFL overtimes end in a tie in a timely fashion or would you rather let them play out the string? Because I find the tie so unsatisfying but I also find staying up till 3am so unsatisfying. Could we maybe fold in a college concept of going for two over and over again? I want to know your general hot takes on overtime because it's just we gotta fix something. Either way it first off, no Fisher Price Basketball hoop. Little upset about that. Is Chris in a bathroom stall, Diane?
B
No, I know where he is. They have these little booths at the Times building where you can do exactly what he's doing or take a phone call to like little telephone booths. Remember those?
A
Okay, good.
B
Yeah.
A
I thought he had the tv. The tv, the computer, the iPad placed there on the toilet.
B
Toilet.
A
And he was squatting down going, hey, guys, check me out. This is a real clear background. Oh, yeah, there's a little hooked hanger here. So my. Don't touch the floor of the. Of the bathroom. Thoughts on the overtime, Diana? This is a good question.
B
Likes overtime, by the way. Let's just start there. Like, I feel like it's not a debate. Nobody's like, you know what?
A
I love free football.
B
I. Nobody likes a tie. Look, I think once they change the rules where each team gets a possession, it immediately made this kind of a pain. And I get it. And, and look, the baseball thing is a whole nother conversation of just how late people are staying up watching this stuff. You're insane. And I've done it too. But I think baseball is way more annoying than football is in that regard. So. James, you remember when I covered the XFL?
A
Yes, actually. Brilliant sideline reporter. Best the XFL's ever seen.
B
Thank you. I think so too. I think I did like six games before it ended because of COVID But those six games were a highlight of my career. I ran miles every game. It was unbelievable. Anyways, their overtime rules were phenomenal because it just kept the game moving so fast and is. It was similar to college. But my, my favorite part about it was the fact that. So you'd get one possession, I think at the 20 yard line. Okay. And if you scored there, it was just like if the rules are now, you go back and forth. But they had one little caveat. Either way, it was way more exciting and I wish that they would apply that. I just got to try to recall my brain of what the XFL rule was. Okay, how do you think they. Do you think they fix it? Is because, look, the competition committee is always. This is always coming up in conversation of ways to make this better. Especially after the 13 second situation with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs and the Bills. What do you think?
A
Yes, I remember that I was standing on that sideline and Talk about running your tail off. That was me going to sideline in that divisional game going, I'm going to interview Josh Allen. No, I'm going to interview Patrick Mahomes. No, I'm Going to go back to Jalad. Like, it was just the greatest finish ever.
B
Remember, they ran to each other. Other. Remember? That was what made that. That was one of the most remarkable images I had.
A
Just, like, sprinted and we're just like, I can't believe this just happened.
B
And oh, my God, I love you. This was the greatest game.
A
Yeah, it was unreal. It was the greatest game I've ever covered. But I, I, I fight with this, Dinah, because the most popular sport in the entire world is what? Soccer.
B
Soccer.
A
It's not even close. Yeah, they end in tonight. Ties all the time. And for some reason, their fan base is completely cool with it. And maybe this is just an American thing because we're like, oh, God, ties. There has to be a winner. Half of Europe is like, tied. Let's go home. And it's like they feel completely fine after it. It's very fascinating to watch. What I also, though, don't find very appealing is different rules from the regular season to the postseason. During the regular season, we get a ghost runner on second base. What are we playing stickball in Philadelphia right now with a broke hockey stick and a one bounce tennis ball. Ghost runner on second. All of a sudden, a guy just appears there out of nowhere in a regular season game. But it doesn't happen in the postseason. So, like, the different rules that can apply, I. E. Kind of like the NFL from the postseason to the regular season, it all just seems very, very odd in a sense. So maybe you should keep playing. Maybe you do just keep playing. I'm there. These tickets are expensive. Maybe you want to. They're not expensive because I'm there. They're just expensive for the fans. And maybe they just want to be there, a real winner in a real game. All the jerking around these, these rules is a little wild to me, and that they're different from one aspect to the other. I don't know. I don't have an answer for.
B
I wonder if the physicality, I wonder the physicality of football is what makes us so eager to get an answer. Because these guys are putting their, like, bodies on the line every day. I'm not saying soccer is not aggressive and that they're running tremendous amounts all day long out, but it's just a, it's a different sport. And I just think it takes so much more in football that it's like this boxing match. Better have an answer. But although in boxing, they, they have draws, too.
A
They have draws too. See, and here's the deal. And with the new kickoff rules, by the way. And the way that these guys are bombing them from downtown. Maybe that changes things a little bit too, with the way some of these games end. I don't know. Maybe the kickoff rule plays a part. Who knows? Okay, we don't have an answer for Chris, so maybe we have an answer for questions number two. Mack, you roll that one, please. The team I'm most fascinated with right now is the Baltimore Ravens. I. Their season is kind of a failure already, but then they look great with Snoop Hundley. Lamar is coming back at some point. What do you guys think is more likely? They win the AFC north this year or we start talking about John Harbaugh in the hot seat by the end of the year. I could see it either way. Wow.
B
I have not heard about John Harbaugh being in the hot seat right now. I think it's too early. I think there's still a lot Ravens fans apparently. God, he was really depressed talking about that, and I don't think he should be so depressed because with Lamar Jackson being back, it changes everything. It changes what's. What's the famous stat that every. Every game that Lamar Jackson is part of, they win some percentage. It's very high. It's like ridiculous. Like, every game that Lamar Jackson's part of, like, they win like 87% of the games. It's not that high, but it's close to it. I. I just think with him backing it, it changes the entire offense, which will then help the defense. I don't think they're perfect. They were my super bowl pick. I have freaked out over the fact that they were my super bowl pick because they do not look like a Super bowl winning team. But I think this is a type of team that could get a. They could be steal your girl too, by the way. They could have fallen in that category.
A
They were my pick and they make me change it. Because we were going to talk Ravens, apparently here at the end. I didn't know why they wanted me to change from the Ravens, but apparently that's why. I got two things I want to say. One, I think the move to Stoop Hudley during the bye week, Diana, might be the decision that John Harbaugh does that saves this team getting that win right out of the buy and changing away from the quarterback you paid $6 million for to be your backup and you go, no, we're going to go with Snoop and this is what we're going to do. That part of the team, they don't have any problems with, like John Harbaugh the CEO of this organization. My understanding is there's no problems there. Right. Like there's injuries. There's other things. It's not like what he's doing in his role has been bad. I just look and we'll close out the show with this. This is the schedule and you tell me how many just absolute, just losses are on here for the Ravens at Miami, at Minnesota, at Cleveland, at the jets, at Cincinnati, against Cincinnati, against Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, New England at Green bay at Pittsburgh, 2. 1.
B
I had six wins there, right?
A
Yeah.
B
So I think their biggest challenges will be probably beating Pittsburgh, you know, to do it twice. We'll go the one for Green Bay, New England.
A
Yeah, I mean, they're good. Look out here.
B
Here they come. Chill out. Get out of the bathroom.
A
Steal your car. Yeah, get out of the bathroom. Which I still seeing it a second time. Like, didn't change my mind. It reaffirmed me that he's in a bathroom stall. All right, that'll do it for Chris Branch. Appreciate him. Hopefully he gets out of there. Diana, Wonderful, wonderful show. This was a blast for everybody listening or watching. Appreciate it. We'll be back on Thursday. Enjoy your Wednesday.
