You get so into it and then you, you're always surprised or taken aback by how other people see it. Like what, what are the fans reaction or other media. They always have something they bring up that I wasn't expecting, which is kind of fun.
Chase
I love it. Chase, I don't know about you, but I look forward to this list coming out each and every year. It is senior NFL writer Mike Sando, his quarterback tears. Mike, thank you for joining us. I know you're doing a thousand of these and rightfully so because this list is kind of a must read for all of us. I want to get right to the questions, but I want to tell everybody right away that this list is a 50 person panel chase inside the NFL. And let me see if I can do this off the top of my head. Five executives, five. Five general managers, five assistant general managers, five former general managers, eight head coaches, 19 coaches that are not head coaches, including 15 coordinators. Mike, look at that. We're rolling here. And so these are some educated people.
Mike Sando
It's pretty good. Yeah, it was actually six GMs, six assistant GMs. So you were close. You had five even more six and six more people.
Chase
Maybe I wanted to avoid the 666. I'm not sure. It could have been. Yeah, yeah. There's two unanimous quarterbacks on here and Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes. I don't you're not prepared for this question, but I love seeing the graphic on the side because the people at the athletic dominate this. Mahomes, his first year was a tier four and now he's had seven straight in tier one. Do you remember what was said about him in that tier four year?
Mike Sando
Well, tier four is a little bit confusing at times. He'd only had one start. So tier four, if you put. Yeah, so here there's, there's a tier four is two different things. It could be, hey, you're not really a full season starter. So like Kirk Cousins got 24 Tier 4 votes this year. Hey, we know what he is. But people are questioning whether he can do it anymore. Michael Pennock's got like 39 tier fours. Those are all. Hey, he's only played three games. I'm putting him in tier four because we don't really know. So that's how Patrick Mahomes, I put him in it. Everyone was excited about it if you read the quotes back then. But he only had one start. So he said, look, I'm going to give him a four because we don't have enough info. He's only played one game. But hey, here's what I think about him. And so I wouldn't read too much into those four debuts, you know, it's.
Chase
More like, oh, for sure. I was just curious if people were helpful.
Mike Sando
Yeah, yeah, yeah. They were very hopeful. People were optimistic and of course the situation with Andy Reid and whatnot.
James Palmer
So, I mean, look, the Mahone stuff's interesting to me. The most interesting thing though. Well, I have actually have a few. But the Joe Burrow at 2. Right. Because in my opinion, when I've done tears and I don't know anything, I just played. I'm not knowing like the GMs and the coaches because they have like that. That's really the list. And your list is like the bible. But when you look at Burrow, Allen and Jackson.
Mike Sando
Right. Yeah.
James Palmer
Those three, in my opinion can be interchangeable depending on week. Like, I think it's Mahomes no matter what. Maybe the gap is closed. What was the consensus around the GMs and coaches and everyone between Burrow, Allen and Jackson? Because the MVP is number three.
Mike Sando
I think that there's a feeling that Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson may be the toughest guys to face. Right. To prepare for. But I do think there's a bias in these towards your ability as a passer because we've seen that for quarterbacks that rely on their legs, there's always been a feeling with some evidence that that dries up either later in your career or a lot of times in the playoffs. You've got to win in the pocket. And so I think that while Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are overwhelming tier ones, the few votes, a couple votes that didn't put them in tier one. There's like, I think there's at least one voter who only had two people in tier one. It was Burrow and Momes. It wasn't like people are picking Herbert but not Lamar. You know what I mean? It's just. It's just there's a few people that think, hey, when you got to run a lot as a quarterback, that's less reliable. And so we know Joe Burrow is going to win from that pocket, you know, almost all the time. And that gives him a slight edge. That's the most important thing to prioritize. That being said, I think we're splitting hairs. Those, those four guys are overwhelming tier ones. And it's a really outlier people, three or four people, you know.
James Palmer
Was it surprising to you that Burrow and Mahomes were the only two unanimous tier one quarterbacks because Burrow the last two years has missed the playoffs. Now he's been injured. That defense was awful last year, but unanimous when the Chiefs were about the three peat and Burrow two straight years.
Mike Sando
Without the playoffs like I knew Mahomes would be. I'd be disappointed if Mahomes wasn't unanimous. That's all we'd be talking about, you know, So I think that's good. I wouldn't have surprised me at all if Burrow got, let's say two tier two votes, right? That wouldn't have surprised me. But I'm fine with it. I'm really fine with the way that came out. I think it's great that Lamar made it. Overwhelmingly he had been, you know, top of tier 2 guy when for a lot of his career there was such a big gap between the regular season and the playoffs. He was like amazing in the regular season and had some terrible games in the playoffs. And I think that's changed the last couple years and I'm just glad to see the voters recognize that. I mean, he's overwhelming tier one. We're not sitting here spending time talking about, you know, what he has to do. I think he's done it and he's earned it.
Chase
Mike, I kind of want to go back and you kind of alluded to it a little bit about quarterbacks and using their legs to be effective. And there are people that come from one school is how tough are you to stop? And the other school you kind of described that there's still a lot of people that believe that the legs can go. Being a pocket passer is predominantly how you can win in this league. But have you seen an evolution in that thinking over the course of you doing these tiers that there's less and less maybe of that with the mobility becoming more prominent at the position.
Mike Sando
I think the mobility is more valued now. So I think if you're only a pocket guy, unless you're Joe Burrow who's, you know, super, super elite, I think now if you're just a good quarterback but don't have the ability to move, I think that's held against you a little bit, whereas maybe that wouldn't have been before as much. If you are though reliant on your legs because you are not a good passer, I still think that that is flagged as a negative thing.
James Palmer
Yeah, I mean, look at four of the top six because it's Mahomes, which you would say is very mobile, obviously, like makes the plays out of the pocket elusive.
Mike Sando
Great word.
James Palmer
James Palmer, I mean, Josh, Allen, Lamar, and then Jaden Daniels. Staying in Tier 1 before I get to Jaden Daniels, because that, that is my next question. My first one. Stafford. Okay. He's in Tier one. I think he's the fifth best quarterback in the league. There's a lot of external strife by fans that just don't see it and they don't get it. Can you help explain why coaches and GMs in your list had him at five? Because I think that's exactly where he should be.
Mike Sando
Yeah. Yeah. I think that there's a tremendous respect for how difficult he is to fool. How. I think. I think the people who, you know, have a higher level of understanding of the game, higher than mine. Guys who play, you know, you've played quarterback, you know the super nuances of what is going on. Have a super appreciation for Matthew Stafford. He's like a, you know, a wine enthusiast. Can tell the difference between the really good ones and the $500 bottle.
Chase
I cannot. Big fan of Boone's Farm over here.
Mike Sando
Yeah. A lot of people don't know, you know, the difference between the wine they got at Communion and that $500 bottle. Right. It's just this wine and they're fine with it. They think it's good. So I think that with Stafford, he's. He's a little bit of a. Has a little bit of a fine wine. There's some tannins in there. Right. And. And not everybody can see it, but if, you know the ins and outs of what he's actually doing, you have appreciation for him that goes beyond the stats. Right. And then he has won a Super bowl on top of that, and he's super tough. I think that people admire the way he stands in there. A little bit of a dying breed of guy who can really command the game the way he does without running around. Right.
James Palmer
Yeah.
Mike Sando
And, and just he has a master. He has like an old school mastery of the game that just. How many guys have that anymore? Right. There's, there's not guys like that.
Chase
Yeah, it's. Listen, you're talking to like a Matthew Stafford fan club right here, I think with Chase and I, so we love that he's in Tier one. We're, we're, we're all about it. I know Chase wants to ask you specifically about Jaden Daniels, but I look at him and Bo Nix and kind of the quotes in here, I think, are really great about both of them and their specific points. Play caller and the guy who was grooming and developing them.
Mike Sando
Right.
Chase
Whether it's Cliff Kingsbury or Sean Payton, how much is this? Not the system, but the coach that is doing the molding play into this equation? A little bit. Because I thought some of those quotes with both those guys are fascinating as they just start their careers.
Mike Sando
Yeah, with Knicks for sure. So I thought one of the greatest quotes was like, hey, this is going to be a little bit of a competition between the quarterback development skills of Cliff Kingsbury with Jaden Daniels and Sean Payton with Bo Nix. And the implication was this book hasn't been written yet. Bo Nix may be right up there too. May pass him. Now. I don't think anyone's seeing red flags on Jayden Daniels. So I think he, you know, in fairness to Cliff Kingsbury, it's easy to point to what happened with Kyler Murray, but Kyler Murray had to have a clause in his contract to study. Jaden Daniels is checking all the boxes of preparation too. And so I think it's unfair to hold that against Cliff Kingsbury too much. But we do know that that offense is a little bit more solvable, probably right. Than maybe Sean Payton's is. So I think we'll see what happens there. And also a little bit of a cautionary tale. Not. Not in a bad way. But, you know, Jaden Daniels broke CJ Stroud's record for a debut second year quarterback in quarterback tears. And he broke Herbert's. Well, Herbert is getting. Herbert hasn't fallen out of here or anything, but he didn't make the jumps to tier one. He's sort of hanging there and people are waiting for him to do it. And the same thing with C.J. stroud came back a little bit. I will say this, though. Jayden Daniels in the championship game as a rookie, that's real. I think that's why he's there. It's like he got the second season almost validation by what he did in the playoffs.
James Palmer
And how important do you think with Jaden Daniels, do you think that this panel is taking into consideration for the development of these quarterbacks, like you were saying? Because you know Bo Nicks in my opinion. Right. Not on the level of Jaden Daniels, but if you look at stats playwise through week 10, they were neck and neck in terms of what they did, win wise and everything like that. And then Jaden, really, the last part of the year took off. NFC Championship game. I think Jaden's probably right where he's supposed to be, but the development of it.
Mike Sando
Right.
James Palmer
Because you saw C.J. stroud sort of have a Down, quote, unquote, year last year, based on his rookie year. Do you see that happening with Jaden? Where does the panel lie with all that?
Mike Sando
Yeah, I think there. I think people want to see it the second year. I don't feel like, though, people are predicting a big fall off. Like, there's real concerns about. There were concerns about Caleb Williams, for example. There's concerns. I don't see real big concerns with Jaden Daniels beyond the ones that existed when he came in, which is, hey, style of play, you know, he's not the thickest guy. He's going to have some injuries. He got banged up a little bit with the ribs that affected his play. I would say one big difference, though, between Jaden Daniels and Bo Nix is that Bo Nix had a top 10 defense and Jaden Daniels had a bottom 10 defense. And so when you go take a list of the quarterbacks that go to the championship game with bottom 10 defenses, it's, you know, not a very long list. So I think that was super impressive by him.
Chase
Very true, very true. I want to be like a fly on the wall for all of these conversations. Like, Chase, wouldn't you want to just, like, hear, like. And what he's not putting in there and like, oh, that's a great quote, but I gotta toe the line here about what I could throw in.
Mike Sando
There's truth. There's kind of room floor here now of things that are unfair but are totally entertaining, you know.
Chase
Okay, well, we'll call you afterwards. Is there a player over the last couple of seasons, several seasons, if there will, that this panel is kind of frustrated with? Like, I can see him putting it, but he's not getting there. Is there a guy or two that they just go, it's there, but, God, I want it to be there, even. And it doesn't get there.
Mike Sando
Trevor Lawrence, they would like it to be there, but I think this year.
James Palmer
That'S the one we were saying.
Chase
James.
Mike Sando
Yeah, but we drilled down these conversations, and I think one of the most concerning things was, like, what is it that he's great at? Right. I think coming out, you could see the total package of the athleticism. Right. Rare athleticism for his size. But is he, you know, a dynamic runner? He's okay. Is he a super accurate passer? No, he kind of sprays it more than you would like. What is his path to Tier one? I think we sort of concluded there may not be one. Maybe there's a path to Tier two. I think people would say there is, but what are you Hanging your hat on with Trevor Lawrence to become.
Chase
That's a good point.
Mike Sando
To even get to Justin Herbert's level. Do you think he can? I kind of think by now maybe he can't.
James Palmer
Yeah. I mean, that's a good point. The most interesting one on this list to me, and it's the fan base that I seem to rile up the most, is the Eagles.
Mike Sando
Right.
James Palmer
Last week I put up my top 10 list. I had him at number nine. And that's exactly where he ends up on this list you surveyed, Obviously, a large panel of folks who put him exactly at 9. Talk us through the differing opinions on hurts that you had.
Mike Sando
I felt like the voters were almost apologizing for having him so low. Like, they like him. They respect. Really, they respect Jalen hurts, but they just don't feel like he's as much of the reason why the Eagles are good as the quarterbacks above them are. Maybe the reasons why their teams are good. And that if you transported him out of the great offensive line and this last year, the great running back and this last year a really good defense, that maybe he would slip a little bit in this thing more than he would rise. Whereas if you, hey, if we put Justin Herbert in a different system, he may go into tier one, don't you? Like he. Like he may actually ascend in different systems. Whereas Hertz maybe has, you know, less of ability to have it on his shoulders, certainly more as a passer.
Chase
And maybe overall, yeah, it's almost like he's a victim of a tremendous situation that he's in with those receivers, tight end, offensive line, all of it. He has had a variety of play callers, though. I mean, they've brought you guys in each and every year for him, and it's still some W's. And Mike, that kind of makes me think about another aspect of this. How does the group over the years, and even this year as well, kind of view a guy that is, quote unquote, the system guy, but he's very, very productive versus the other quarterback that can play in a lot of systems. But maybe across the board is not as productive as a system guy who's more valued in this system because maybe that guy can win in a variety of ways, but the other guy in the right system can win a lot.
Mike Sando
Well, I think we see that here. And here's who I would say Justin Herbert's valued over Brock Purdy. Right. If we were to just double blind taste test their stats and put them up there and where they rank, and this and that like Purdy's probably going to have the edge. Right? But nobody thinks that nobody would take Purdy over Herbert if they were starting a team, including Kyle Shanahan. Right? Yeah, good point. Right. So I think I don't, you know, it used to be called a game manager or whatever. I think Purdy's more than that because he's, he's more than Jimmy Garoppolo with his ability to move around and maybe create some things. But I think there's a reason why he was picked last in the draft and it probably one of the great quotes in here was like the draft is over. Respect. Put respect on Purdy. I love that. But at the same time, the reasons why he was a seventh round pick are sort of the reasons why he's not where Herbert is, even though he's out produced him. Does that make sense?
James Palmer
Totally.
Mike Sando
Yeah.
Chase
Totally does.

The panel doesn't seem to be buying the Aaron Rodgers experiment in Pittsburgh, to say the least. Where do you think this season goes for the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf and all those guys?
Mike Sando
So Rogers got votes in four different tiers. He got 1 tier 1, 16 tier 2, 27 tier 3, 6 tier 4. So I think we're gonna see a lot of that. I think we're gonna see some inconsistencies. I still think that no one's really excited to play him, you know, because he's got all of those Stafford ability things to control the game too. He's just a little. He's just more further down the road. He's going to be 41. So I'm a little bit torn because I feel like I heard you guys talking coming in about. No, sorry, it was. Sorry, it was a different show. We were talking about the Steve, they're.
James Palmer
All running together by understanding the circuit they're running together.
Mike Sando
But I was doing something in Baltimore and they were talking in the break about how, how good are the Steelers really? I think the Steelers have been this kind of disappointing 9 win, 10 win team with lesser quarterbacks than him. So I still think there's a path for them to have a top 10 defense try to lean into the run game a little bit and have Rodgers, you know, maybe pull out a couple games in the end. I don't know, think they're going to go deep in the playoffs. I question whether Rodgers can hold up physically over the whole year. But you can create a narrative in your mind that a full year off the injury, he's going to be a healthier player, that he was better the second half of last year. I just wonder at 41, I look at the receivers, DK Metcalf, is that his type of guy? He's got no time on task with him. He shows up in June. Arthur Smith's kind of known as a little bit of a headstrong, you know, guy who, when he was the head coach, get a little snippy in the press conference. Right. I mean, what's that marriage gonna be like in week four if they're one and three and Rogers go takes to the airwaves and says what he's gonna say and spins it like, yeah, I don't know, I'd rather, I'd rather have Rogers than what they were gonna have otherwise. But still, that's true.
Chase
And I like that you called art just a little bit snippy. I appreciate, I appreciate that. Are you throwing it in there?
Mike Sando
I don't want to get snippy with me.
Chase
I think he's the best. I also love everybody should go look at where Kirk Cousins is here at the bottom of three. I thought that was interesting. Even though he's not going to be the starter in Atlanta, so his future and the different views that people have on him. I thought Mike was interesting and I wanted to tie that into Michael Pennix and J.J. mcCarthy. As we kind of wind this down, people are fascinated to see these guys that didn't play a whole bunch. We started this conversation with the one start that Patrick Mahomes had in his first year. What is the anticipation for these two guys that are now going into their first year as a full time starter?

Well, I think the anticipation for Penix is that he'll rise into tier three after this year. Getting 11 votes in tier three after three starts is actually really good. Pretty good. 39 tier fours for him are like, hey, not enough info. So I feel like it's a little bit more optimistic on him. Okay. You know, climbing up a little bit. And then who's the other one you were asking?
Chase
J.J. mcCarthy.
Mike Sando
Who? J.J. mcCarthy. Yeah. I think people see a path for J.J. mcCarthy to just where he's at. But I say but just because it was a little bit of a weirdoff season, it feels to me like there's some reservations about JJ McCarthy that aren't being spelled out but exist. Does that make sense?
Chase
Yes.
Mike Sando
Like. Like people aren't getting specific with it. Maybe it's not totally fair, but there's something there. And I think one of the quotes I had in there about that was kind of like, hey, you just don't hear complete slam dunk stuff out of there. So I think this is one that we just need to let ride into the season. Number one, see if he can stay healthy and then just let him play because it's been a weird off season that way with these sort of veiled narratives about him and some of it played into their interest in Rodgers. And so I'm just more interested in. Let's just wait. Let's just get some actual on the field playing time in the regular season for him and then let's evaluate a little bit more fairly.
Chase
Let KOC go, right, Chase.
James Palmer
Yeah, let them ball out. And talking about KOC to another amazing coach, right? Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams, second year quarterback. It seems like people are both interested, maybe a little bit scared about Caleb Williams based on the quotes you have gathered, the tape you put out there, some good, some bad. Is there more reason to be concerned for Chicago Bears fans than you think? Or where is a. Yeah, I felt like.
Mike Sando
I felt like the comments and the tone on him was more concerning than you ever wanted it to be for somebody who was the consensus number one pick. And it always focused around his ability to process the game quickly. You know, some of that plays into taking a lot of sacks, but just in general, I think alarming was one of the words used. So I'll be very interested to see how Ben Johnson either changes that or changes what he does to help Caleb Williams be the best he can be because there's clearly talent there. You know, you would hope that he would move up in this thing, but I think a couple people said, hey, this guy could be a 2 or a 4. Real quick. That was interesting to me. That's.
Chase
That's really interesting. I want to squeeze one more in real quick because Ben Johnson's a fascinating name in a lot of this. He leaves Jared Goff. Jared Goff had five tier one votes. What was kind of the, you know, maybe something that's not in the piece that was said about Goff. That kind of made you perk up a little bit going, where is this going to go now without Ben Johnson?

Well, I thought that, let's face it, there's been some golf skepticism over the years. I thought it was going to be revived here that people would Say, oh, Ben Johnson's leaving. Because everyone thinks Ben Johnson's good at what he did. But that didn't happen. Like, people gave Goff his due. Even one of the quotes was like, hey, there's a debate between what it's according to the quarterback. I think it's more the quarterback than people are being led to believe. I think Goff moved up and got more respect with less hesitation than I was expecting. Based on Ben Johnson leaving and not there's not a Ben Johnson to replace him. Right.

In this episode of Scoop City, hosts Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel delve deep into the latest NFL Quarterback (QB) Tiers list compiled by a diverse 50-person panel. Featuring executives, general managers, coaches, and other NFL insiders, the panel's insights provide a comprehensive evaluation of the league's top quarterbacks. Joined by senior NFL writer Mike Sando, the discussion offers an in-depth analysis of the rankings, shedding light on various quarterbacks' performances and potential trajectories.
Chase Daniel introduces the composition of the panel responsible for the QB Tiers list, highlighting its extensive expertise:
Chase Daniel [03:15]: "It is a 50 person panel... five executives, five general managers, five assistant general managers, five former general managers, eight head coaches, 19 coaches that are not head coaches, including 15 coordinators."
Mike Sando adds a correction to the panel's makeup, emphasizing the meticulous selection process:
Mike Sando [03:06]: "It was actually six GMs, six assistant GMs. So you were close... these are some educated people."
This diverse group ensures a well-rounded and authoritative ranking system, reflecting various perspectives within the NFL hierarchy.
The conversation highlights the unanimous inclusion of Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow in Tier One, showcasing their exceptional performances and leadership.
Chase Daniel expresses enthusiasm about the panel's decisions:
Chase Daniel [03:40]: "There's two unanimous quarterbacks on here and Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes."
Mike Sando elaborates on Mahomes' journey from Tier Four to Tier One:
Mike Sando [03:40]: "Mahomes, his first year was a tier four and now he's had seven straight in tier one."
He explains that Mahomes' initial placement was due to limited starts rather than his actual skill level.
Mike Sando discusses the strengths of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, emphasizing their ability to dominate defenses and adapt in high-pressure situations:
Mike Sando [05:24]: "There is a feeling that Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson may be the toughest guys to face. Right... they're overwhelming tier ones."
He acknowledges a minor bias towards passers but concludes that both quarterbacks possess the versatility and consistency required for Tier One status.
A significant portion of the episode focuses on Matthew Stafford's unexpected placement within Tier One, despite some external skepticism.
Mike Sando praises Stafford's mastery and resilience:
Mike Sando [09:16]: "There's a tremendous respect for how difficult he is to fool... he has won a Super Bowl... he's super tough."
He compares Stafford to a connoisseur of fine wine, appreciating the nuanced skills that set him apart from his peers.
The discussion shifts to emerging quarterbacks like Jaden Daniels, Bo Nix, and J.J. McCarthy, exploring their potential and the factors influencing their rankings.
Mike Sando highlights Jaden Daniels' impressive performance despite challenges:
Mike Sando [26:20]: "Jaden Daniels broke CJ Stroud's record for a debut second year quarterback... that's why he's there."
He contrasts Daniels' success with Bo Nix, noting the differences in their supporting defenses and coaching systems.
Chase Daniel adds perspective on coaching influences:
Chase Daniel [11:05]: "Whether it's Cliff Kingsbury or Sean Payton, how much is this... the coach that is doing the molding plays into this equation?"
This underscores the importance of coaching in quarterback development and performance.
The episode also addresses quarterbacks who, despite strong performances, did not secure a Tier One spot.
Mike Sando expresses concerns about Trevor Lawrence's trajectory:
Mike Sando [14:54]: "Trevor Lawrence... people are frustrated... can he even get to Justin Herbert's level?"
He questions Lawrence's path to Tier One, citing his current performance metrics and the challenges ahead.
Similarly, Justin Herbert's standing is analyzed, with Mike Sando suggesting that his performance may plateau:
Mike Sando [15:39]: "Do you think he can? I kind of think by now maybe he can't."
The role of coaching systems in shaping quarterback performance is a recurring theme.
Mike Sando emphasizes the adaptability required in modern NFL offenses:
Mike Sando [07:40]: "If you're just a good quarterback but don't have the ability to move, I think that's held against you a little bit."
He contrasts different coaching styles, noting how systems can either enhance or limit a quarterback's effectiveness.
A notable segment discusses Aaron Rodgers' move to the Pittsburgh Steelers and its implications.
Mike Sando analyzes Rodgers' tier placement and the Steelers' prospects:
Mike Sando [21:16]: "Rogers got votes in four different tiers... he's going to be 41... DK Metcalf... Arthur Smith's known as a little bit of a headstrong guy..."
He expresses skepticism about Rodgers' longevity and the Steelers' ability to maintain playoff contention with Rodgers at the helm.
As the episode wraps up, the hosts and guest reflect on the evolving landscape of NFL quarterbacks and the anticipation for the upcoming season.
Chase Daniel commends the depth of the panel's insights:
Chase Daniel [30:02]: "We could go for hours and hours, but Mike has 11 more interviews to go. This was a blast for us."
Mike Sando reiterates the importance of ongoing evaluation and the need to await further performances:
Mike Sando [27:40]: "Let's just wait. Let's just get some actual on the field playing time in the regular season for him and then let's evaluate a little bit more fairly."
