Folks, there is simply never a dull moment down on the bayou. Helping us break it all down. My good friend once again joins me. Blake Rafino, AYS sports. Blake, what's going on, my friend? Appreciate you taking the time. Let me first start by saying we got the news this morning. Condolences to you in the LSU family. The loss of Skip Burtman, not just an LSU legend, not just an SEC legend, but a sports legend for those of us certainly, who love the game of college baseball. I hate to start it on a somber note, my friend, but really appreciate you taking the time. Excited to eventually dive in the Jaden Daniel stuff with you, but we had to get off, get this show off talking about Skip Bergman.
B
I don't really know what to say, you know, me of all people, at a loss for words. You know, I, I. Look, man, Chris, in the 1990s, when you and I were young pups growing up and baseball was king and there was just a guy that, that meant more than life here, you know, Louisiana is a lot of things, you know, like after yesterday with Jaden, you know, people always talk about the overall chaos. What chaos did Skip bring? Only chaos he brought was he whooped up on that candy ass on the diamond and there was nothing that you could do to stop him. And here's the truth in the legend of Skip. I think that I will remember the first college baseball game that I ever went to was an LSU versus two lane baseball game. And I remember seeing all the players. I remember being starstruck. And then for the first time in my life, I remember at seven years old or. Yeah, yeah, yeah, seven years old. 1997, when Skip Bertman walked out of the dugout in the old Alex box and seeing number 15 with the big Rolex watch on, saying, you guys aren't taking infield good and being starstruck of who he was and what he meant. You know, Chris, at that time, he had, he, he, he was the biggest probably coach in sports, you know, because he just keeps winning national titles. And college baseball is starting to become on espn and everything that we knew and know today is built on the back of 15. And so, you know, I, I don't know, man. You know, I mean, it's just, it's tough. And so you have a legend that probably changed LSU athletics forever. And, and this one, this one hurts, you know, it, it hurts pretty bad. So I, I send my condolences, as I already have, to his, his daughters. You know, losing around the same year is really tough. I can, I, I can't imagine. I don't want to imagine, but I feel like the entire LSU fan base today is. Is hurt and hurting. So I just hope that we can every day live up to a legacy that he built and changed lsu. You know, Chris, they didn't even have really a baton cage. I mean, they didn't have cages when he was here. And he built what college baseball is, you know, and so to now see, you know, what he's built and what he's done not only for LSU and what he did as an athletics director, people forget that he was an athletics director, that he was, you know, had two national titles pretty much under his belt when as an ad, just as much as he had one for, you know, the five that he had as a. As a coach himself. And so it's a. It's a tough. It's a tough day in the bayou, but one that for a legend that will remember forever, you know, and so I'm proud to have been a part of this media corps and proud to. Because he never big leagued anybody. You know, he never. He would talk to anybody. He would. He loved the game of baseball. And Chris, as we see now what college baseball has become, I know that there are a lot of massive legend and figures in the game. I don't know if there's a bigger legend than Skip Burtman and what college baseball has become. So I don't really know how you end this, but, you know, legends never really die. And I think that Skip changed baseball forever, and it's going to always be his legacy of everything that he did.
A
Yeah, certainly his legacy. Blake, I know you just said it will live on and looking way too far ahead, if you will, it's will. It will only emotionally supercharge what was already going to be an emotionally supercharged 2027 LSU baseball season.
B
So if you think Jay Johnson was a psychopath now, you know, you know, Jay sent out a tweet this morning. Just insane that, you know, I'm never gonna let you down. You know, man, that, that, that. I mean, of course you got to understand, man, like, he is the pinnacle of what LSU is. I, I don't think people, People don't understand. People think they understand lsu. They don't actually understand lsu. It's him. Like, it's him. He changed LSU didn't do anything in sports until he came here. They didn't understand about spending money and going, getting Nick Saban. Chris. The only reason they went and got Nick Saban was because he had had so much success Meaning, Skip, that man, actually winning national titles might be fun. Who, who would have ever thought, you know, and so it just, if you want to know what this place is about, look at number 15.
A
No doubt we'll continue to remember Skip. And I'm excited, Blake, to talk to you. Obviously, we get to the spring and we get to the time when we hit the diamond, and certainly that'll be a big storyline for Jay Johnson and the LSU Tigers on the diamond in 2027. Blake, I do want to move into this really quickly. It's, it's a very much a shifting in gears, if you will. It's been a very eventful last 24 plus hours or so down on the Bayou. It was late, what, late Wednesday night, if you missed it. Then early Thursday morning, the news drops that Washington Commanders quarterback, former LSU quarterback, former Heisman Trophy winner Jaden Daniels filed a cease and desist, informing LSU they can no longer use his name, image and likeness. In a letter sent to Verge Alsbury. A copy was obtained, obviously, by ESPN and many other sources late Wednesday night.
B
Yeah, I'll email it to you.
A
Right. I'm sure. I'm about to say, I know you have one. The dispute came up, obviously, DJ Pickett wearing number five. His number. Number five or he says his number that he wore at lsu. Blake, I'm just gonna give you the floor. I know things have sort of evolved since this originally dropped, but, you know, we saw yesterday the, the backlash from the LSU fan base, the LSU community, a feeling of betrayal, a feeling of how dare he try to stab us in the back and essentially just completely disassociate from the university that gave him so much. On the flip side, was it all Jaden Daniels? He puts out a statement, obviously he wants his camp and lsu, and I'm paraphrasing a bit, but he wants this handle privately. Feels like it's a little late for that. But walk me through your initial reaction, what first came out versus I know you've got some differing opinions from some others. From the standpoint of you see both sides, you, you hear out both. It's at the end of the day, I said this, Blake. It's just a shame, really, truly, because I know LSU folks love Jaden Daniels and I know Jaden Daniels has love for lsu, but boy, this got, this got really, really messy in a hurry.
B
So there's a two prong approach here, Chris, that I want to go down number one. I very well and have been very vocal about this. I may be in the minority and it's probably one of the biggest minority takes on this kind of situation that I have. I don't believe that anyone should wear number five again. I don't believe that anyone should wear number nine again. I don't believe in LSU baseball. Anyone should wear number three again. So you. LSU has not set a precedent for what they do. Like in Oklahoma. Like, what does Oklahoma do? Baker's got a statue, Kyler's got a statue.
A
You.
B
They have a. A precedent of what it's like when they have somebody in this. I do think that the Heisman Trophy in college athletics is the biggest individual award in all of college sports. Outside of the mvp, in my opinion of the NFL, I think it's the number two overall award in all of sports in general. Okay. Like, I. Maybe you could say, you know, the, the Major League baseball because it's 162 games. Like, you can have that debate. But to me, a football guy, I think the Heisman Trophy is the second biggest award in all of sports. I don't believe those numbers should be worn. So to. To go about. I agree with and have a problem with number five being worn because Joe Burrow comes out yesterday and says, yeah, LSU told me that number nine will never be worn again. Okay, Is it that you have to win a Heisman and a national title, or is it just a Heisman again? There's no precedent that's been set on what is the actual thing. Scott Wilber came out two years ago and said we're not. We're not retiring any more jerseys, but then mandated that number nine for football doesn't be handed out. Well, Scott Woodward's not here anymore. He almost ran this place into a ground. And quite honestly, I don't give two flying Rudy poos what in the hell he's got to say. He's not here. He's not lsu. He's not the fan base. So I say all of that to say that Jaden Daniels won a Heisman. And of the 5,000 to 7,000 players that have put on an LSU jersey, Chris, only three have won national titles here. Only three. Okay? So I think that that has to be in its lore of what it is. However, and I know you love when I say the word however, however, this is not the way to go about this. I have talked to the Daniels camp last week, Chris. I came out after Lane was asked about this initially and stated that I have talked to the Daniels camp, which I have in multiple occasions, and told them, which I will tell you, and I've Been saying, I told them that this was stupid, that if they go this direction, it will be absolutely stupid. It is stupid. Now, I think that Lane is, is and was put in a very difficult situation when a coaching staff changed. There was a promise given to DJ Picket, which Brian Kelly did not live up to. When DJ Picket was going through the recruiting process for LSU to land him, one of the underlying things was, is, I want to wear number five. And they made that promise. Well, when he got to campus, Brian Kelly said, yeah, you're not doing that because Jane Daniels, his number is not going to be retired or is going to not be worn. And but to be honest with you, this started well over a year ago, actually training camp a year ago, when number five, he was asking for it, meaning DJ and Jayden Daniels went to Brian Kelly and goes, look, man, what. What are we, what are we doing here? Like, what. What are y'.
A
All.
B
What are y' all doing here? So then when a new chat staff changes over and TV rev share contracts start happening and nil contracts start happening, there was an Amendment put in D.J. pickett's contract that LSU will pay him X if he is not awarded number five. Okay, so Lane gets there and is bombarded with this entire situation. And Lane goes, look, man, this really doesn't have anything to do with me. If BK promised him, I mean, let's, let's paraphrase what he's saying. If BK promised him that, I'm not going to be the one to tell him no. I. I can't be the one to tell him no. So Jane Daniels is taking the brunt of this because of his camp. I had, I, I am very close to coming out and saying that. I don't know how much Jaden knew what his mother was doing. His mother is his agent, his mother is his PR team. And quite honestly, she's failing him and has failed him in multiple stops and in multiple situations. Everything that she has touched has turned into destruction, whether it's at Arizona State, whether now it's at LSU with what she's doing. And basically Jay now has to come out with a statement saying, in theory, what he's saying. Mom, shut up. If you're going to deal with this, do it behind closed doors. And privately, you did not have to go public with this, which is what I confirmed that she was the one that went public with this. Because why is a ESPN DC based journalist reporting this for ESPN if she's not the one doing it? So, Chris, this really started to heat up last week. When she started making a very big deal of it. Because I do think that there is some form of disrespect, right? Like, I, again, I sit on the. I don't think five should be worn. I don't think nine should be worn. I don't think Heisman Trophy winners, I think they should be put up on a higher pedestal than anybody else in the football lore. But with that being said, everything that she has done, everything that she has touched has turned into destruction. Chris, I, I said this last night, and I'll just, I'll. I'll end my thoughts on this. I watched the Netflix QB documentary and when Jane Daniels got hurt, she made it about herself. So, I mean, look, I, I will say this to the. In degree. I told them that this was going to be. This was going to go the way that it did. I have text messages, I have phone calls that will prove that. I told them that this will go the way. It will go this way. Okay. You know, I mean, and so I think the, the sad thing for me is that I don't know how much Jaden really knew about it. I don't think he knew that a cease and desist was coming. I don't think that he knew that his mother was going to pull this move. And why. Basically, you know, after practice yesterday, a young man gets a phone and says, hey, what is going on? Now, I will say this to Jaden. It's time. It's time to make sure that your team is for you and for you alone. I don't. I think his mom is for him, but I think she goes about it in every wrong way. Everywhere she's been and everywhere that she's gone. So for that, Chris, it's a shame because a fan base should be backing Jaden. And I'm going to tell you right this. Sue lsu. Find out what happens. Find out, because this has already got precedent. You can't. You can't make LSU erase its history.
A
You are.
B
You, you, you. You can't. You can't do that. So I don't really know where to. To sit on this other than I, I have a two prong approach on this. But the way that they are handling this is really dumb. But I do think that LSU is at fault in this as well because they don't have a precedent. And quite honestly, when Lane was coming in, there were some people behind the scenes that did some shady stuff to get D.J. pickett into number five. And I'm not saying D.J. did. D.J. was promised it, Chris. Right? Like he was. At what point when the kid is committing in November, December, did you not think Jane Daniels was going to win the Heisman? You get what I'm saying? Like, so you promised him something that you could never promise him. And it's very foolish on their part.
A
Blake, what's next? Is my next question from the standpoint of I don't think. Certainly. I don't think Jaden Daniels in his camp. Maybe they do. I don't think they do. I don't think anybody wants Jaden Daniels legacy to be tarnished. Lsu, certainly, like you mentioned, they're not going to wipe away their history because, like, what. How do we. Where does this go from here? How does it get solved amicably? Is it Jaden Daniels and his team bending the knee? Is it LSU bending the knee, which I don't think would happen? Is it both sides coming together, gathering hand in hand, singing Kumbaya? How. How does this get resolved in a peaceful manner where Jaden Daniels legacy is still intact, as much as it possibly can be at this point?
B
Point Jaden need. Well, there's a couple of avenues, I think. Number one, don't file the cease and assist and back down. Yeah. You know, like you. That's the first move that's got to happen here. Okay, You. You gotta stop. Stop being stupid, because this is stupid. Secondly, I think LSU's got to come up with a precedent. You know, they. Chris, they got to come up with the understanding of how does it. Like, what do you do when someone wins the Heisman Trophy? Chris, we went since 1958 to 2019 without anybody at LSU winning the Heisman. They won two national titles in that time frame.
A
And just to clarify, Blake, because I'm. Maybe I'm one of the uneducated, but I'm assuming there's like, there's no ring of honor. There's no retired jerseys. It's just.
B
There is a ring of.
A
Ring of honor. Okay?
B
There's a ring of honor and multiple people. Chris, they just retired to. I say retired. They just took two people in the ring of honor that played in the 70s. LSU's way too far behind. Charles Alexander, Burt Jones, all of those things. So, like, again, though, Joe Burrow came out yesterday, Chris, and said no. They told me that they're not allowing anyone to wear nine. Okay? So LSU's got their own problems because there's been so much turnover and so much chaos from the old administration that now Lane's got to be here and sit here and, you know, they got to have some alignment. LSU has got to come to the forefront, too, here now. Okay? You know, people say I protect LSU at all costs. No, I, I pretty much tell it how it is. I think both sides are going to have to mutually agree on things. And is it Heisman? A national title? Is it Heisman? Well, come up with it because it's what you need to do. But here's what I'll say, too. Now, Chris, I know that this is a different sport, but please stay with me. Ben McDonald's jersey is retired, and I think it's deserved a Golden Spikes Award winner. Chris deserves that. Okay. They gave out Paul skeens as number 20, and they didn't think, they didn't think anything of it. Well, they didn't give out number three because, you know, I, I, I'm, I don't want to go here because of, you know, skip passing. I don't want to open up these cans of worms. But over Jay Johnson's dead body, you know, like, I mean, he is not going to allow that to happen under his tenure. I mean, this is Dylan freaking Cruz we're talking about, right? So again, Chris, I think both of them have to come together. Here's the thing for Jaden, remember, in Major Pain, Chris, when Major Payne says, you need to pop your titty out his mouth and stop him, you're a grown man. You're a grown man. You got your mama telling you what you can and can't do. From a relationship standpoint, Chris, that, that's weird. That's weird. Okay? So as much as I love Jaden, as much as I love his family, as much as I think they're good people, deep down, I, I love his dad. I love his team. Like, there's a lot of great people. Jaden's a great human being. Okay? But at the end of the day, you gotta put yourself in the situation of what's right. I think your mom has the best interest for you. However, sending a cease and assist to LSU about your name, image and likeness is stupid. It is dumb. So I don't really know the path here, but it, they just are going to have to both. I don't want to say bend the knee, but they're both going to have to come together, Chris, on this, and come to an understanding of what this means. In reference to D.J. pickett, which is getting missed. I do think there was some underhanded stuff there. Like, there. You got to understand that's a Heisman Trophy winner. Well, I wore the number my entire life. Well, that dude won a Heisman. So I don't care where. Where you WORE the number five. So, you know, I think D.J. handled it perfectly. And I understand that he was promised something. I get it. But you also need to understand that, again, I'm going to keep saying this. We LSU puts this, you know, the fan base. The one thing I disagree with them on is that they say, yeah, he won the Heisman. Do you understand the magnitude of those words? Do you understand the magnitude of this place and understand those words? So I think it's a lot of compromising that needs to happen. But like you said earlier, I. I hate the legacy part of this being tarnished.
A
It's going to be interesting to see how it unfolds. This is just the beginning. I feel we're nowhere near close to the end, unfortunately. But Blake Ravino, ays sports, will be on top of it in his coverage. Blake, really appreciate you taking the time, my friend. Let's definitely do it again soon.
