And how about that Polack interception in the end zone? Well, it's David Pollock and I think people are going to learn what kind of ball players. He's got a heart of a lion. I'm really proud of that kid.
C
This is C Ball, get ball, college football's top show for football analysis, predictions and coach interviews. Now here's your host, three time all.
B
American, seven time Emmy award winner. Welcome on indoors C Ball. Get Ball. We are here to the final four, man. We are. We are here. We have made it. And how cool is it now with the final four? Like we wanted parody for so long and we wanted competitive balance and we got sick of seeing Georgia and Ohio State and Bama and Clemson for a while and you got none of them in there. Like it's pretty fantastic. You got Indiana and Oregon and Miami and Ole Miss. So new teams, four new teams from a year ago. Pretty cool. We're basically, you know, in the, in the portal season. Basically. Like we have the off season, we have, you know, the postseason, all that stuff. Now it's portal palooza. And if you're watching and you've seen some of the numbers, man, it's kind of crazy. 45 over 4,500 players are in the transfer portal and that sure sounds like a lot. And it is because there's like 11,000 to 14,000 players depending on where you look. And so that's a, that's over 30% of the players that are in the portal. I think it's interesting when we talk about that. Like it's not all one sided. I think that's something that's really, really important for people to understand. Like, yes, there are a lot of kids that are putting their name in the portal to go chase a new opportunity, to go chase more money. God bless them. Ain't nothing wrong with that. More opportunity, more playing time, better skillset, you know, better fit for their skillset. There's also a lot of people that we don't talk about this enough that have kind of been told, hey man, you might want to get in the portal and it's not going to work here. And so like that's, that's the other side of this coin too that we, we do have to keep in mind like that that is a part of it where players are asked like, hey, you know, you ain't got to go home, but you can't stay here, right? Like, you can't be a part of what we got going on. So that's why the numbers are crazy. I think the biggest thing that we're probably going to pay attention to the most is the QB situations. It, it's, it's. It started as a quarterback portal mostly and it is the most important spot. And you're talking, you've heard about Sorsby and the Texas Tech connection and you've told, you've been told or we've heard five, five million dollars for one season. God bless America. Right? Like, holy cow. Like the numbers that are being thrown around and obviously quarterback is the most important position. It's also the position where man, we've got a lot, a lot of names and it's, it's Sorsby and Lagway and Riola and Levitt and Mesta Maker and you're gonna go to Brown and Prabula and Knight. Like there's so many names that are in the portal that. And, and the thing about the Portal that I've seen a lot is a lot of it has a ton of QBs, a ton of running backs that those are ones that are going to be in the top, you know, and receivers, those are the ones that are going to be the top. The. The top echelon of people that are going to be getting, you know, the coin and the most money. The portal the closes January 16th. So this is not going anywhere. The final four is here. So we're going to talk, you know, more about that than the, than the Portal, but I think some, some interesting nuggets. Josh Hoover goes to, to Indiana. If you looked at Indiana and Oregon and Texas Tech and Miami and all these teams that were in the College Football Playoff, they were all looking for a quarterback next year. So a quarterback friendly market now with all these names, it's going to be like, all right, well who's going there? Hoover to me is a, is a, is a, is an easy fit, a great fit for, for Indiana and It's not surprising, 31 career starts. They're going to go get guys that have a lot of experience. We've seen them do it, we've seen them be successful. You know exactly what they are. He can scramble, you know, he runs it enough, but really throwing the ball. Interesting system fit because it fits really well with some of the RPOs, but a little bit more air raid. But you know, we were talking about Mendoza this time last year. A lot of people did not. But the transfer portal is going to make or break a lot of these teams and very few teams now are, you know, hey, we're going to go get our four stars, our five stars and we're going to go develop like the new, that era of college football of putting a fence around your state. And this is how we do it. We stack classes and all that stuff. Like that's, that sounds great, but that's gone. That's not coming back. And neither is the, the money of Pandora's box that's been open. So, you know, Brent, I don't know what you wanted to add to that, but you got, you got, you got people declaring to the NFL as well in this season. Which is, which is what a lot of these kids dreams are. Which is, which is cool. But people finding locations all across the country. A lot of big names and a lot of big price tags. You wouldn't have minded that, would you, Brent Rollins?
C
Oh, I mean that. Heck no. I would have said certainly. Bring it on. Did you see Cody Campbell, by the way? So you mentioned, you know, Brendan Sorsby going to Texas Tech. We were like, hey, yeah, that's probably where he's going. Girlfriend's there. He, he, he tweeted out, hey, just got a taste. This year we want more like the guy who's cutting the checks.
B
Now.
C
There's so many questions about a lot of this in terms of the, the cap and the clearinghouse and how all this stuff, the legalities of all, like are they actually fitting within the rules? Who knows? I, it'll, they're not wild, Wild West. I, I do think overall with the portal, I'm trying not to follow it a lot, but because it's so much. No, it's so much. I'm just, I'm going to look when it's done. Like, okay, when, when everything's done. The other amazing part that you talked about, you talked about Josh Hoover going to Indiana. We're getting ready to break down Indiana's semifinal game with Oregon.
B
Yeah.
C
They've added quarterback, qb, receiver, tight end, running back.
D
Yep.
C
They're doing Big Marsh at receiver.
B
Like there, there's, listen, if you're not you're behind. Like you. Indiana is a program that is very much. It's. It's not a secret. Like, they built their program on the transfer portal and listen, one of the oldest teams in college football, one of the most experienced you'll ever see. Like, that's a part of it. And. And that's what Signetti is going to continue to do. So if you're not doing it now, like, how the heck are you expecting to compete next year? So, you know, it's.
C
They're not going anywhere.
B
It is exhausting. It's exhausting to keep up with and to see the names and to see who's talking to who, but it's also a part of the world. Now. The teams that are actually out, though, I do think have an advantage because the teams that are in. You're trying to go win. The thing, like, your first focus is, I'm not going to have an opportunity to make a final Four. These are not a given. I've got to make sure that I'm doing everything I can to go try to win it. So now the teams that are out has a good chance to. To play ball.
C
Like, and this is one where. Transfer portal, you're probably going to see more and more teams, if they don't have it already, go have the general manager role. So it's impossible not to be having it.
B
Yeah, it's impossible. It's impossible not to. You. You have to. Like, unless you're. Unless you're one of the few with, like, extreme capacity. Like, there are a few that have ridiculous amounts of capacity that can do special things like that, but very few can. I need somebody. It's just like, you know, like, Bill Belichick and parcels on them. Like, I need somebody to shop for the groceries, right? Like, somebody needs to go shop for the groceries. I'll take the ingredients. I'll take it and make a cake. I'll make whatever I need to make. But somebody needs to handle that that's really experienced, and that's why you've seen so much trickle down from the NFL. Like, so many people from the NFL offices and jobs that are now coming down to college football, because that's what it is. I remember when I went to Ole Miss and I went to Ole Miss and I talked a bunch of those guys, and I'm literally talking to him. I'm like, one of the guys. One of the staffs was like, I've always wanted to be in the NFL. That's what I've always wanted to do. That's what, that's why I want to do football and it's why I wanted to be. In the end, he was like, but this is the NFL. This is the NFL. Like, this is salary caps and budgets and stuff like that. So it fits in well here.
C
So I have a question for you that's a great segue. If you had the opportunity to go back in time, would. And you know, let's say you had a different team that wanted to pick you in the NFL draft. Was there a team that maybe you preferred to go to in that range that you were picked? I, I remember, I think we've talked about this before, but.
B
Well, I mean, obviously the Steelers would have been like a, the Steelers, the Ravens would have been like a great fit. The Colts were a fit. Like, there were a bunch of teams that were. I was picked 17th in the draft. And then after that, like, I remember sitting down with Dungey and we were doing the, the, the, the meetings, you know, and I remember sitting down with Belichick and Dungy and those guys, and Dungey was like, listen, I really wanted to get to know you, want to talk to you, but like, you're not going to be there when I'm, when we're picking. Like, we pick way down at the end of the first round. But I think like, to me as a pass, rusher, like a natural 34 outside backer would have been absolutely a perfect easy fit for me. Cincinnati wasn't as easy because it was a harder position. It was like learning something new.
C
Okay, so let's, let's use those examples. So you said Colts, Steelers, Ravens, Bengals. So what if those four teams offered you a deal in a package and then you got to pick which one you want to go to?
B
It's freaking awesome. It's freaking outstanding.
C
Like, that's what the transfer portal is right now.
B
It's, it's, it's like the draft with.
C
Where the players doing the picking.
B
Yep.
C
Instead of the team.
B
The, the thing that's amazing, the thing that's, it's amazing for the athletes, not for the coaches. But it's the thing that's interesting about it that, that I would say is curious to look five years down the road, seven years down the road. Like, okay, if you go to two or three schools though, where, where's home? Like, where, where do I go back to? Like, because, because, because, yeah, I probably would have made a lot of money. I was a three time all American after one, after two, somebody comes to you with a high bid. Well, Did I just undo everything I did at my old school? Like, the legacy of being there and being great? Now you're like, he's also the dude that left us, you know? So, like, like, I think there is something interesting. Do what he taught.
C
He talked to Quinn. Yours. I think he. Someone asked him about that and he said he had offers to go portal and more lucrative and lucrative offers to go in the portal and go play QB somewhere this college football season. And he said, I didn't want to mess up being a Tech, the Texas Longhorns qb, like, and where I'm from and the light, the sort of lifelong choice of that. And he mentioned that.
B
So it's worked out well for Vince Young. It's worked. It's worked out well. It's worked out well for me. Like, the state of Georgia and being able to, like, basically open a lot of doors and do a lot of different things that you wouldn't have been able to do if you said no, you know, and if you'd have gone somewhere else. So I, I do think that's going to be one of the unintended consequences of, of all this stuff. And, and there's going to be plenty more down the road, right? Like, there's going to be plenty of things that we look back and we're like, man, this is why this system needed to be changed quicker and sooner. But. But it wasn't. All right, first semifinal game, which one we going with? We're going with Ole Miss in Miami.
C
Because it's the first one. It's third. It's Thursday night. It's.
B
It's the. It's the first one. I love the. I love the analogy that I used on the show Saturday. Like, it's. It's literally two different types of boxers that want to play two different styles that are trying to end the. In the, in the end the match in the same result. Like, they're trying to one give body blows. Body blows. Physicality. Physicality. Make you feel me. Make you feel me. Because at the end of the game, I'm going to break your will. The other one is going to stay on the outside and jab and jab and jab and jab. And then it's like, oh, I'm going to make you feel me. But it's going to be because of tempo and because of the amount of plays, not because of, you know, the physicality in the plays. But both these teams haven't been here in a while, man. Actually never. Ole Miss has never been here. They've never played. They've never been in this position and they've never played for a Natty. Miami hasn't played for a natty since 2002. Like, it's been a hot minute. So both of these teams, fun to see them enjoying success that they haven't experienced in a while. And now it's. It's the irremovable object, right? Immovable object. It's. It's the defensive line of Miami. They've been able to assert their will against almost every opponent they've played. Almost is the key word. Like, there was a couple in there, like smu, that ran tempo, that had a quarterback that was pretty quick, that had a quarterback that would get the ball out. Like that had a lot of success. And so when you start saying that, man, I do think with, with Chambliss, with Jennings looking at that game, it's something you should look at because Bane and Mezadore absolutely rocked Ohio State's world. Like they rocked him A and M, they rocked their world. If you're going to run an offense that allows that to happen, you. You're in trouble. But that's how Ole Miss offense is. Is, is created. It's to negate this Ole Miss's offense. And the way Trinidad plays is to get the ball out, is to make quick reads, is to be the consummate point guard. Man, the dude is a point guard. He is a distributor. He takes very, very few sacks, negative plays, the ball's out, the read is quick. This dude has so much experience playing the game. At the Division 1 level, no, but at the Division 2 level. And it shows week in and week out. And this will be a tremendous test because he will have dudes hanging all over him. And it's not just Bane and Mezador. It's. It's Moton, it's Scott. Like all they, they blitz and they're aggressive with this defense and they make you feel you for four quarters and then they make plays.
C
So let's start there. So obviously we're going to go through a bunch. I got a bunch of numbers that's brought to you by Pro Football Focus that's have worked for. For over 12 years. You can get a pff discount the promo codes. Get ball 25. I think it's in the description on YouTube. But you'd mentioned Jennings. So I look back at that game. He's had exactly two career games where he has had a 90 passing grade, 300 yards and multiple TDs with zero interceptions. One of them was that game against Miami. So like career game from Jennings in that game and his average time to throw in that game, 2.57 seconds which was the exact average time to throw that Trinidad had against Georgia. So ball out, quick. He the, the interesting part looking at him too in that game was down the field 9 of 14 for 210 yards on 10 plus yard throws. So they quick, quick, quick, quick. And then shot play, big play. And guess who does exactly that? That's, that would be Ole Miss.
B
Well and I think that's the, I think that's probably the most like impressive part of watching Trinidad is the dude made the plays that everybody went. Did you see that? Did you see that? But he didn't do it all game. He only did it when he needed to. Like that. That's the biggest difference. He played the quarterback position. How about the third and five late? Like he sees it immediately. He sees that it's man to man. There's no help on this side of the field, the wide side of the field to the trips like sees it. Like if you don't disguise and have something creative, you're done. He'll see it and it's out. See it and it's out. And that's where, that's where he has the ability to do that extra. But he also has the ability to do the boring, the mundane, the easy and make it, make it very hard on you because then you got to rush the passer again. 2 minute drill before the half was the worst Miami's offense or defense looked against Ohio State. Two minute drill. It was fast, it was up tempo, it was quick, it was throw. It was throw, it was throw, it was ball out. Bane Mazador and company tongues dragging the floor. Because that's what you do in a two minute. It sucks because you're rushing the passer come back to the line. Rush the passer, come back to the line. So these styles, man, it's going to be awesome to see because it's old school, it's physicality, it's new school and, and tempo and space and tape. It's just, it's just awesome. It's awesome.
C
I mean Ole miss has had 30 straight or 30 plus points in eight straight games. 12 of the 14 games. Miami's only allowed 24 plus in three games and no more than 17 during this six game win streak that they have. But looking back at Trinidad, since we're focusing in on sort of that ole Ms. Offense vs. Miami defense matchup. First he had an all timer of A performance against Georgia. I went and looked back and in terms of PFF passing grade. So that's like, hey, you're putting elite throw after elite throw on tape. The only better performance against Georgia in the Kirby era is C.J. stroud in 2022 in that playoff game.
B
When they scored 40 and lost.
C
Like, so, like just all timer of a performance performance. So can he duplicate that or come close to that? I don't know. In the last four games, he's got an 88 passing grade, 71% completion, like 10 total touchdowns. Like he's on a heater. But it's a different animal when you're facing that defense. And I think the other thing too is the secondary play. Georgia, especially once Jacquori Thomas went out of the game with the targeting penalty. Like they're on their third safety. Like, I think Miami feels as good about their secondary right now than any point in the season.
B
Yeah, huge for them.
C
Exactly.
B
Huge. Because he's a playmaker that can blitz, he can catch, he can do all kinds of things well. And I think, you know, but if I'm going to attack Miami, that's where I'm going to attack them. I'm going to attack them in the secondary. I'm going to attack him at corner, see if they can make plays.
C
Going to matter big time.
B
Yeah. And the officials let them play against Ohio State. They let him play obviously, all the playoff games.
C
Really?
B
And, and, and to, to the detriment sometimes. Like the missed face mask against Ole Miss was the worst Miss face mask call. You like to do it in that moment, that big of a play. Like that could have been one that could have haunted Ole Miss and Ole Miss fans. But, but, but the other side, Carson Beck, dude, Fletcher. Mark Fletcher has been on a tear. Mark Fletcher Jr. Like, he's a guy that just love the way he runs, love how physically runs Miami, the run game. If you haven't seen Tony, like, he is fun in the passing game and he does this, he does that. He also blocks his fricking tail off. And they insert him into the run game all the time. Like Puka Nakua, who's huge, right? Like, but this dude's tiny and he throws his face in the fan. But I say this to Ole Miss when I watch them, man, and when I watched him against Georgia too, it's. It's 52 and 51, man. It's Harris and it's Eccles. Those guys can hold their own. Those guys can absolutely win. To me, like, you've got to be able to make plays against this Ole Miss secondary, like you've got to be able to. That, that's their, that's their biggest weakness I think is out wide. So to me this feels even more like a Tony game. This feels more like a passing affair for Miami. I think we'll see Miami's passing attack and it's going to have to play good because I do think Ole Miss's strength by far is stopping the run with 5:1 and 5:2 in there, causing havoc.
C
So I pointed, I got dug into those numbers because those two played so well. So 52, Echols, 51, Xavier Harris, who's like 6 8, 3, 15, 3 20, big boy. But the way they sort of twisted and stunted and the games that they consistently ran against Georgia created confusion along the interior of Georgia's offensive line, especially say quarters two, three and into a little bit into the fourth quarter until Georgia had to go kind of two minute offense down 10. Miami's not a zone based team. Miami's more of a gap skiing, man on man like downhill type team. And I actually think that's a little bit better built to run against than what Georgia was because Georgia had kind of morphed into more of a primarily zone team. And that now the other part though, the maze and the amazing part to me echoes and Harris echoes played 84 of the snaps in that game, 63 out of 75. Harris played 55 of the 75 snaps.
B
That's why late in the game rarely.
C
Come off the field.
B
You see him, he was cramping several times in the game. And that's exactly why. Because having to play so many snaps.
C
And so playing just a week later, can they like does Miami try to maybe push the tempo even a little bit to wear those guys down and sort of make it a fourth quarter where they can run and do things in the fourth quarter. Because that matchup like you said, I think that slightly more so advantages is advantage to Miami just because of how they run, not necessarily the players involved.
B
Well and it's, it's more body blows, more physical team. Like it's, it's, it was. This is, this is another, this is another lineup and pound you game and they just played one a week ago. So obviously Ole Miss, it's a tremendous challenge. And here's the thing, I think a lot of people are going to pick against Ole Miss and that's okay because they've been here all year long. Like but, but what you said earlier, like can Trinidad do it again? Like can he can he spin around six times and go back 35 yards and outrun a corner and make it.
C
Happen and dropped 30 yard dimes.
B
He actually didn't even, he actually didn't even run that much last week. And that, that was probably the most. Like, they rushed Lacey. Lacey was a big deal in this game. And the difference between the first Georgia game and the second one was they actually stuck with it. Like, stick with it, stick with the running game. Like, stick with the body blows. That's your, that's your form of a body blow. Like, Lacy breaks tackles as well as anybody in the country. He's got 23 touchdowns. He's got a lot more touchdowns than the next closest guy. Like, he makes plays. He's got speed. Like, so I, I think that, I think they, they have to make sure they stick to that. Trinidad's going to run it, he's going to run it out of structure as well. But I think we got to pick this game. And I don't know if you've gone back and forth on this yet or not.
C
Yes, very much so.
B
Yeah, I think this is, this is going to be outstanding. It's the styles make this so much fun. And it's really, it really is old school football versus new school football. And I mean, which one you think is going to give in? I'm going with Miami. I'm going with physicality. I'm going with. I just think that, like, the way that they've been playing offensively, it feels like they're finding more and more answers. But the most important thing that's happened is Fletcher. Like, he, they, they found that late in the season with the pistol like we talked about a couple of weeks ago against A and M. Reinforced it again last week against Ohio State. Like, it really allows them to get downhill faster with all of their big bodies and the body blows. And I think it's, it's, it's just, it's, it feels like Miami season, it feel like it's been a great one. Obviously Ohio State was a big win. They're as healthy as they've been. Give me the canes. I think it's, I think it's a, it's a, it's a medium scoring game. It's 27, 21 type of game. It's not going to be high scoring. I don't think it's going to be as high scoring as we saw with the Georgia game.
C
Okay, so first off, true ruler Miami, that's hanging out in the chat. So it says SMU did not score in the second half. That's how I know you all just watch highlights. Actually, they scored like 19 in the second half in overtime, including the last nine points of the game. And we did watch the whole game. And I actually re. Watched that whole game FY2. I wonder the Malachi Tony piece. Zachariah Branch for Georgia in that game, eight receptions on nine targets. Yes, some of them were screens, but if you really watch the game, he was open. Open.
B
He was 7, 11.
C
He was always open. Every single time he ran a route, he was open. And that, for the most part, is why I'm picking Miami. I think Carson Beck will get the ball to Malachi Tony. And I think that this game kind of feels like it could be Georgia, Ole Miss esque, where it's a little low scoring early or, you know, as the game goes on and then the fourth quarter, the offenses kind of take over a little bit because of the fatigue factor.
B
And Miami doesn't.
C
Miami doesn't want 31, 27.
B
Miami doesn't want to shoot out. Like, no crystal ball will be perfectly fine. The. The. He'll be perfectly fine saying, I win this game three to nothing if I have to. Like, I don't. I don't care how I have to win it. And I'll tell you what, the. The evolution. Evolution of crystal ball has been really fun to watch because they have. They've gotten more dialed in. They've gotten more buttoned up. They've gotten. They've done a better job closing games, right? Like, they've done a better job of not beating themselves. They've done a better job of game management. Like, we saw some spotty moments from him in the past. And I think just like anybody else, you're supposed to. You're supposed to grow into your job. Like. And he's done an unbelievable job growing into his job at a time where everybody else has gotten 7 on 7, 7 on 7, play pitchy, pitchy, woo, woo. Throw it around the yard, like, have a quarterback. They've been able to get those big dudes and continue to pop people in the mouth, play old school. And it's been unbelievable for them. And I think Miami continues and goes to play for a national championship.
C
And the beautiful part about, from a fan and just a fan of the game perspective, whoever wins this game, like Miami's, if they win the game, they're playing at home for the champions.
B
That's crazy.
C
That's amazing.
B
I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I Don't know if that's a good thing or not.
C
I. I could see that. I agree.
B
I would. I. I don't know. I. I like getting my kids away from things and like going to destinations and having their attention. Man, I got too many distractions. Anyways, that, that's a side note, but I just. I. I don't. I don't.
C
I don't. They win. They're playing at home for the championship.
B
Ole Miss wins, which is cool.
C
Ole Miss wins. They're playing for the championship without the coach who said he had to go to another job to win a championship.
B
To get to a championship.
C
Yeah.
B

Go download the app. All right, next matchup. We got a rematch, baby. We got an absolute rematch. Round two of a heavyweight fight. It was, it was a really fun fight the first time I went back and watched this game and it was fun to watch again because how did, how did, how did the styles match up? Um, Indiana trying to get to their first Natty ever ever. Like Ole Miss trying to get to their first national championship game and Oregon trying to get to its second. Neither one has ever won one. Either one of one of these two teams are going to be able to get to the spot where they can do something obviously they haven't been able to do. If you, if you're going to start with this game and you're going to start with one side the ball. I'm going to start with Indiana's offense and I'm going to start with who they are, what they are. Death by a thousand cuts. It's not overly confusing what Indiana does, but they do it exceptionally well. It's downhill, it's running backs that want to do. Listen, we can do inside zone. We can do all the different things to it zone read duo all the stuff that they do well. Their offensive line is exceptionally well coached. They do a good job. They don't give up free runners very often. Man, they work well together, they step together that they combo well together. They do all those little things well. In that last game they didn't have a lot of explosive runs. Not sure they had any like oh.
C
This Oregon you mean? Yes, it was three, three tough yard runs.
B
It was tough sledding and watching that game back Alexander and Washington, those two suckers. So when you watch Oregon, you watch one and you watch 52. They are big humans but they twitch like they don't move like big humans and they move other big humans back very fast and very effectively. And Indiana had their hands full with those two dudes. Like they won quick, they won powerfully. They got off blocks. Indiana found ways to work around it because they're freaking well coached and they have a quarterback that's a dude. Like he's a frickin dude. So you know they, they worked around it well. But I definitely thought watching that game back Oregon in the trenches, that defensive line, they played really, really well. Even though they lost the game, even though everything didn't go well, they very much limited the damaged. They made Indiana earn things and they did not let them run downhill like Alabama continually let Indiana do. Just straight bludgeon them in the ball.
C
Game and they, you know Indiana has some field position, good field position that game. Yes. So I was, I was, I rewatched the game as well both sides and it's just offense in general in that game was hard. Like those defenses played so physical so well and I thought okay, what's the difference now for both teams? But speaking since we're looking at Indiana's offense, I think the difference is the sort of three prong attack now that they have that they didn't have in the first game because they wouldn't really. Didn't really use them. The addition to me of Charlie Becker to go with Cooper and Surratt is a just a next level for them offensively that they can beat you in multitude of ways. Becker in that game had the deep target that he almost. It was an under thrown ball. He almost kind of came back and caught it. But starting with the Penn State game, he's got a 90.1 PFF receiving grade. So 21 receptions, 400 yards, couple touchdowns like ball player. And you know one of the. Was it. I can't remember if it was Sarat or Cooper that got hurt first. It was Sarah because. Yeah, because Cooper caught the touchdown against Penn State. Yeah. But like to me that may have been a blessing in disguise for them for the long term to just add him to the repertoire for the realize.
B
What he could do.
C
So that's one thing to me that is at least okay. Can can Indiana sustain a little more offense in this game and especially if they can't run it again as well. Having those three guys now established that makes me feel better if I'm an Indiana fan.
B
There's. So if I asked you to name going into this game right now, give me the top three receivers in this ball game, who would you say? Yeah. And your eyes just lit up because you're realizing my question because you think.
C
The first three are the on one team.
B
They're all on Indiana squad, bro.
C
Yep. The top three kind of semi not healthy like just getting back.
B
But even the top three receivers that can separate when contested catches like listen they all bring it like Cooper's fastest. I think Surratt's got great body control. The back shoulder is really hard. Becker gets rolling those long strides in that big frame. Contested catches like the best receivers in this Now Sadiq, if you want to consider him a receiver, we can consider him receiver and he'd be in that conversation for sure. But like the biggest difference to me like Indiana, they have a QB that is tough as crap and Indiana also beat Oregon late in that football game because they ran their quarterback. Their quarterback got some chunk plays because they spread them out. They threw the football, they threw the back shoulders a lot and they had a lot of success on the outside. Oregon had to try to find an answer in the past game and so it left the middle of the field a Little bit more open. Instead of running all those guys over the middle of the field, it was like, all right, we can, we can run Mendoza up the middle. And they, they just put you in a bind, man, because, because they can run it downhill, because he can pull it and throw it. Because they move the launch point. Because they, that can win contested catches like Bear Alexander in Washington. Those two guys are going to eat like they're going to win up front, like they're going to win. But Indiana has an offense that can beat you so many different ways with so many different guys. And that's what makes this unit special. And that's where like in the rematch, I think Oregon's better at corner now. Like obviously Finney started to come along throughout this season. They're going to have to be a lot better because where they got beat on the perimeter, it was not. It was, it was, it was pretty consistent. Like the back shoulder creating space like 120. In that game, honestly, they could have kept throwing him the ball like they, they could have thrown it to him a lot. But I don't see how, I don't see how Oregon will consistently stop this offense. I think this offense is good enough and well equipped enough to continue to make plays. To me it's. When it gets in the red, can Oregon force some field goals? And that's where I think they could have success. Because the field shrinks, it becomes a little bit different. But on that side of the football, I give the edge. Even though Oregon's defense is really good, I give the edge to Indiana's offense.
C
All right, so let's flip to the other side. Indiana's defense against Oregon's offense off. Man, offense was just hard for Oregon in that game. Davidson had, I can't remember what it was but a long one longer run. That was the only run they had over 10 yards in the game. Like it was Dante Moore's lowest graded. His graded game of the season in the 40s times. It was also dozens too.
B
So yes, got sacked six times, got pressured almost 50% of the time. He dropped back like it was, it was really hard. It was very surprising. That's one, that's the only game this season for the Ducks. Well, Iowa too, where the three headed monster at running back just didn't break as many tackles. And that's, and that's a credit to Indiana. Right. Like they got those guys on the ground because those backs run as hard and as angry as anybody in the country. And to get them on the ground like first guy you know, without giving up those explosive runs like that. That's where I think Oregon. I think Oregon's better now because I think Johnson at tight ends better now. Like he is a viable, viable target the middle of the field. Here's the thing. I don't think Oregon, the first time they played, I don't think Oregon could. Could run the game plan that they ran against Texas Tech last week. I don't think they could do it. I don't think. I think they had to have the run game to be able to win. Now. I think Dante Moore, because Dante Moore, if you haven't seen him, guys, this is the top 10 pick in the NFL, whether it's this year or whether it's next year.
C
Like top two, I would say top two.
B
The whole. If he comes out, I think he's going to stay in. But like, I'm just saying, like the, the, the. The. The arm talent, the poise, it's really, really good. But you know what he likes to do? He likes to show you that arm talent. He wants to spin it. Like you give him a, you give him a window. He wants to throw through the window. Like a door is fine, but a window is more than okay for him. And so I think last week, what I was really impressed with, with, with, with him. I love the way Dante Moore worked the middle of the field. I love the way Dante Moore hit his running backs. I love the way Dante Moore did not try to force things down the field. And that's Indiana. You got to get run after the catch. You got to get the ball to your dudes to let your dudes do it. And Sadiq and Johnson, those two guys, can I, can I run the football with, with them on the field? Because they're a 12 personnel nightmare. They're a problem. And Johnson's done like this. Sadiq's healthy. That's the matchup to me is can those guys work the middle of the field in zones? Because those zones, they have to come up and play that run, honor that run. Those guys are able to slip behind him and work the middle of the field more. Did it masterfully last week against Texas Tech.
C
So I'm smiling because. So when I was looking at this game and answering that same question that we did, what's different for Indiana's offense? I. Okay. What's different for both Indiana's defense and Oregon's offense so quickly? On Indiana's defense? No Wyatt or Daly.
B
Yep.
C
Both played in that game. 79 snaps, four pressures and a sack between the two of them combined. Landino played a bunch of those snaps. They only played 14 different 14 defensive players against Alabama. So if it gets into a conditioning game potentially that might be an issue. But what's different for Oregon, the number one thing is what you just said. It's Jamari Johnson and I even looked up the numbers just to be sure they in terms of 12, he only played 25 snaps in that first game. The last seven games the lowest number of snaps he played is 38. In terms of 12 personnel usage in that game against the Indiana it's one of the lowest of the season. 24. It's been 60 plus percent the last four games. That's what's changed them and that's what I think can allow them to do things in this game. Now granted Indiana plays a ton of base defense and always has three linebackers on the field. But for the most part.
B
But yeah, but that, but that. But the. But the reason it matters is because you've got bigger guys now. Sadiq's a tight end now that's blocking a base guy as opposed to a wide receiver. Like it allows you most of the time it allows you to run the football more effectively in the passing game to be more high percentage. Like it doesn't have to be. I win on the outside. I can win over the middle of the field with the run game.
C
So I agree their receiver injuries may have been the biggest blessing for, for.
B
Oregon in terms of figure out who they are.
C
Yeah. To and Johnson's ascension because he's a. He's going to be an NFL tight end whenever he gets to that point.
B
And it looked like they just thought he was a blocking tight end to start the season and then now he's making one handed catches over the middle of field like making it look easy. I think, I think we got a high scoring game in this one. I think this one's. I don't think it's going to be like the first one. I think this one's going to be a little bit more high scoring. Do you agree?
C
Actually no, I don't. I think this is still. I think these two teams are just so well coached, so good defensively that it stays in the low 20s.
B
Yeah. I'm thinking somebody gets to the 30s.
C
Okay.
B
So.
C
All right. The rematch question. We've already seen a couple specifically within the playoff.
B
I want to be the loser.
C
Bama got Oklahoma.
B
I want to be Georgia. I want to be the loser. I always want to be the loser in the rematch because I it. It doesn't matter. Like, the respect level goes up, the pissed off factor goes up. The. I have your attention. Like, can I have your attention, please? Yes, you have my attention. You already beat the crap out of me. And if you don't think Dan Lanning's fuming at the mouth and frothing at the mouth and making those faces like, you're wrong. And he's going to be like, look what this team did. Don't, don't forget what this team did. Like, they were physical in the end in this game. And the reason why that I say that is both quarterbacks can run it and both quarterbacks are going to have to like. But I think the playmaking for. I don't, I think you're, I think you're going to go opposite me. I think you're going to go the Ducks. Personally, I'm going Indiana. I think Mendoza is just the answer key right now. Like, he's got the receivers, they've got the running game enough, but his ability to pull the football and run like he's going to have 60, 70 yards rushing, like, he has that ability to do that. I want to be the guy that is on the revenge factor, but there's just, there's something special about this Indiana team. And betting against them, again, I just don't think is a smart move. I think they've got the pieces. I think they pull it off. I think Indiana gets it done and goes to their first ever national championship.
C
I say before, if, if you see or if we see that you were right in terms of what you think that I thought. Do you trust Dan Lanning to manage this game after Texas and all of those things?
B
I think Dan's sensational. I mean, I think Dan is a builder. I think his defense is playing, will be, will be great, will be elite. Like, I would like to see him dial it back. I would like to see him play smart. Like, at one point in that game, you're like, all right, Texas Tech can't score. Like, they can't score. So let's, let's, let's stop with the fourth downs. But I think that's who Dan is. I think Dan wants to be aggressive and that's, he's been very clear about that since he's been there and that ain't changed much. That looks like Dan that we saw years and years ago. And I think Indiana is a lot more conservative. I think they'll be aggressive, but I think they'll take their, take pick and choose their spots and they're not going to be reckless. I think Dan has a tendency to be reckless sometimes. And that's. Listen, that's okay. That's your style. I mean, I don't agree with Kirby Smart. Kirby Smart's the best coach in college football. I don't agree with a lot of the things he did in that last game. But he doesn't care if I agree with him either. And I don't. And he doesn't have to care if I agree with him. But, like, there's. I think you can lose games. Like, it's easy. I think it's. I think it's. I think it's easy to say, Dan Lanning, I'm going for him fourth down because I'm going to try to win. I think you can lose games, too. Like, games can be lost. And I think that's the other side of the coin that we've gotten so hyper aggressive and so analytically driven and so fourth down. Go for it. I mean, like, there's a couple Ohio State calls on or Alabama calls this year. I'm like, what are we doing? Like, why are you going for this right now? So I don't agree with a lot of the calls around college football.
C
Well, I would actually say that more often than not, games are lost. More so than. Yeah, they are one. But you're wrong, by the way. I am picking the Hoosiers.
B
Are you on Hoosiers?
C
23:20. And mainly because you just watch them against Alabama, against Ohio State, the first game against Oregon, they play like the best coach team in college football. In addition to the talent that they've, they. And they put the talent in the spots where it needs to be. They play fast. You can tell their physical discipline.
B
I mean, all the things you want.
C
All the little details that a coach talks about to the nth degree and cares about, they do it and they do it consistently. And they.
B
Oregon's good, too. Now. Oregon's good. I mean, I love Oregon's mix of physicality, athleticism, Dante Moore's playmaking. It's just. Dante Moore will be challenged again like he was in this game. The difference to me is Mendoza can just take off and he can break tackles and he can make crap happen. Dante Moore is a good athlete. Mendoza is a better athlete. Like Mendoza is a better, A better athlete than Dante Moore. He can get out of things quicker. But I do think, I think this one's going to be fun. It's going to be really fun. One to watch.
C
I think we're going to get two Amazing football games. That's. I think we're going to get two, like, instant classics as opposed to, you know, everybody's just kicking back and figuring out what they're doing the rest of the night kind of deals.
B
Yeah, those suck.
C
Well, when they should be just coming and listening to us or watching the. You down with Recapp?
B
Yeah, baby. Watching that recap app, baby. Let's go. Got to get them two P's. All right, you got some numbers for the transfer players.
C
And all the numbers we did tonight were related to the. To the college football playoffs, so. So nothing else outside of that, because that's the focus. That's the. That's the thing. That's the. That's what we're all here to see is the semifinal games. And then they get to see and come back and watch us Thursday night and Friday night.
B
Man, It's. It'll be fun. It'll be fun games. And we will be here live to recap them. You're gonna.
C
We do gotta get to the winners of the weekend.
B
Yeah. Who won the weekend? We gotta get Wesley in here. We haven't seen Wesley's face. I need to see that mug with them glasses. I need to see West Blank. That's what I'm talking about. You're on mute.
D
I think you said you just wanted to see me. I didn't know if you wanted to hear me, too.
B
Oh, my bad. Look at you. You're so smart. Who won the weekend for you?
D
Homie, Hottie, Toddy. Whole thing, whole thing about that weekend. Obviously, I'm a dog, but from an outsider's perspective, taking over the Superdome, getting Trinidad Shambliss on superhero S tier God mode. And look, dude, we've. We've all seen this. We've seen the juco guy come to the SEC and take college football by surprise. And you know what happened? His team won the Natty. And I said it on September 27th. I believe I've seen the script. Ole Miss is going to win the Natty.
B
So you talk about Cam. You talk about Cam Newton, ain't you.
D
I'm talking about somebody a little bit more recently, but we're. Number 13. He was the fourth of his. Of his namesake.
B
Yeah, that's in Quantavius Bennett. Is that what it is?
D
The mailman, baby.
C
But.
D
But yeah, no, I think it's an awesome story. I think the whole playoff is awesome. But I think if you're. If you're a Georgia fan listening and watching, you probably know a lot of Ole Miss people. They're not a big rival. And maybe you want to say that you lost to the team that went on to win the Natty. So probably a lot of hottie Toddy around the Southeast. And you add in the Lane Kiffin factor too, because look, he, he left to win a championship and hottie Toddy wins one and they're sticking it to him. So all of Ole Miss is my winner of the weekend and quarterfinals.
B
Yeah, that's, that's pretty dang great. And if, if, if I was going first, I might have gone hottie Toddy Wesley got forgot first dibs on that one because it's in Trinidad, obviously. The whole, the whole story with, with the coaching staff and then this QB and all that's going on. And it's still going on, dudes. Like, it's still going on. Like there's still. Yes, this coach is going to be here. This one's not going to be here. I don't know, like, I don't know who the heck's going to be here. Like, maybe, maybe he'll be here, maybe not. Charlie Weiss is going to be here. Thank God. Like, got to have Charlie with, with Trinidad. Like, thank God he's. He's there and pulling the strings. All right, Brett, who you got? Who won the weekend?
C
University of Wisconsin River Falls because they actually won a national championship. And as a sort of fellow Division 3 athlete Once Upon a time, I know those, that's. Those are guys who are true love of the game guys, but like, they hadn't even been to the D3 playoffs since 96. And then you got their quarterback, Caleb Blaha, I think is how you say it, who passed Joe Burrows, NCAA record for yardage in the season. So, like, is that good? That is over a thousand. And you know, and his name's.
B
And his name's Blaha. That's amazing.
C
Yes. But river, they played. What was it? North Central? I think that is. That was kind of a juggernaut.
B
I missed that one.
C
Lost by more than four and they won by every game by more than two touchdowns. They, you know, averaged well over like 50, 60 points a game, something like that. And then they beat him in the Division 3 championship. So that. I think that was. At least it wasn't Mount Union too, because those were his arrival with mine.
B
Oh, yeah, you west, by God, Virginia. People don't like Mountain Union. I know that.
C
Ohio I was in. I was. Went to school in Ohio, so.
B
Yeah.
C
Yeah.
B
Well, same region. I know you don't like them, period. All right, so. So here's here's one, you know, to me, really, really won the weekend. The Indiana Hoosiers in the style in which they just buried Bama, like, if you thought they were going to be like a flash in the pan and this was something that was like, oh, it's. It's. This is another good year. Like, just another good year. And like, listen to him talk. Listen to Signetti. Signetti is a rock star now with everybody. Like, everybody's. Everybody's putting Signetti clips everywhere because the coach is a dude. Listen to the players talk. Their center gets the MVP trophy, like, and just listen to him talk. Everything about Indiana. They buried a dynasty in Bama and they're creating their own, like, back to back playoffs and now the transfer portal, like, having that, having that, like that win on that stage and what they've done now, like, it's proof of concept. It's not a flash in the pan. Like, we're here to stay. And that helps get Nick Marsh at receiver, Josh Hoover at qb. Like, and it helps to continue what they're building because. Because it's special. Like, the jokes. The jokes are gone. They got a chance to play for their first national title. There's a lot of teams across the country that are fans, that are. That are amazing alumni and fans and fanatics right across the country that loved watching that. That loved watching that. That have cheered for. That have cheered for Indiana hoops for a long time and not got to see that. Not got to see football. But there's people in the chat like Rooks, Adam Rooks. It says it bothers me to my core. I don't know what he's talking about, but. But I know that his team's not playing for this because he's in the Auburn War Eagle section. But Indiana can do it. Indiana can do it. Like, what the heck? Like, what are we doing? I absolutely amazing that they've proven that they're here and they're here to stay. And Signetti got his raise because it's in the contract and the transfers are coming and the Hoosiers are for real. It's crazy. Crazy. They won the weekend. They made everybody happy across. More people watched that game. That rating was higher than I think any other game they liked. Enjoyed watching that. All right, dudes, we appreciate y'. All. We appreciate y' all joining us. We will be back Wednesday, I think Wesley. Right. We'll be back Wednesday. Is that the plan?
D
Wednesday is the plan. Yep.
B
Sweet.
D
Be back Wednesday per usual, and then Thursday and then Friday.
B
And then Saturday. No, I'm just kidding. No, I'm just kidding. We will be back, but we appreciate y' all joining us. Continue to, to, like rake, subscribe, all that stuff and then we'll keep putting out some content. But the transfer portal, y' all have at it, guys. Y' all keep, y' all keep paying attention. Y', all, y' all keep taking your notes and seeing where all these guys going. When the season's over, me and Brent will get all in depth with you. We'll, we'll break out some tape. We'll, we'll make sure we talk about all these guys that are joining your team. But right now, we're kind of trying to win a championship. Like who, who are the, who are the final four? That's going to get there, that's going to get it done, and we'll keep doing it with you on cball getball. Appreciate you dudes. Peace.

Episode: CFP Semifinals PREVIEWS and PICKS: Miami-Ole Miss | Oregon-Indiana
Date: January 6, 2026
Host: David Pollack
Guests/Co-Hosts: Brent Rollins, Wesley (segment winner discussion)
David Pollack and Brent Rollins break down the College Football Playoff semifinals, featuring matchups between Miami vs. Ole Miss and Oregon vs. Indiana. The episode blends Pollack's hallmark blend of deep scheme analysis, candid opinions, and storytelling, focusing on team identities, transfer portal shifts, key players, and coaching evolutions. Interactive and insightful, this special preview episode is rich with context for each team’s journey, standout personalities, and bold predictions.
Portal Palooza: Over 4,500 players are in the transfer portal, representing 30%+ of college football athletes ([01:35]).
Why so many? Some chase opportunity and NIL money, but many are being nudged to leave by coaches.
“That era of putting a fence around your state...that’s gone.” – David ([04:40])
Quarterback Market: The portal centers on QBs and skill players. Names like Sorsby, Lagway, Riola, and Hoover shape several playoff teams’ futures.
“The transfer portal is going to make or break a lot of these teams… that era of college football… that’s gone.” — David ([04:15])
New GM Role: Many colleges now hire “general managers” from NFL backgrounds to manage recruiting and roster construction like NFL teams ([07:33]).
“If you go to two or three schools...where's home?” — David ([10:15])
"It's literally two different types of boxers... Ole Miss is the jab, Miami is body blows." — David ([12:07])
Miami D-line weapons: Bane, Mezador, Moton, Scott—play fast and physical, excelled vs. Ohio State and Texas A&M ([13:15]).
Jennings and Trinidad:
Tempo Problem:
“To me this feels more like a Tony game… Ole Miss’ biggest weakness is out wide.” — David ([19:24])
“It feels like Miami’s season. Give me the Canes, 27–21.” — David ([23:53])
“The evolution of Cristobal has been really fun to watch… more buttoned up, better closing games.” — David ([25:25])
“If you name the top three receivers in this ball game, they’re all on Indiana’s squad.” — David ([33:03])
Pollack argues the loser of the first matchup gains the “pissed off factor” — but chooses Indiana anyway ([40:37]).
“There’s something special about this Indiana team… betting against them I just don’t think is a smart move.” — David ([41:34])
Brent’s Pick: Indiana, 23–20; cites their coaching, discipline, knack for getting the most out of their talent ([44:04]).
Coaching Contrast:
“They buried a dynasty in Bama and they're creating their own… proof of concept. It's not a flash in the pan.” — David ([50:00])
Pollack and Rollins are conversational, energetic, and passionate. Deep dives are balanced by playful banter:
The show oscillates between X’s-and-O’s strategy, meta-level college football shifts, and down-to-earth commentary about personalities, traditions, and program building.
In this episode, David Pollack and Brent Rollins preview the 2026 College Football Playoff semifinals with a special emphasis on how the transfer portal, NIL money, and modern roster management have utterly changed the landscape. They break down each matchup by scheme, key players, and coaching strengths/weaknesses, making insightful picks (both favor Miami and Indiana). The conversation is peppered with stories, playful arguments, and genuine excitement for a Final Four without the “blue blood” classes of recent years. According to Pollack, no matter the outcome, fans are set for “instant classics” that usher in a new era of college football.
