And how about that Pollock interception in the end zone?
Coach Mark Rick
Well, it's David Pollock and I think people are going to learn what kind of ball player he is. He's got a heart of a lion. I'm really proud of that kid.

Now here's your host, three time all american, seven time Emmy award winner. What up dudes? Welcome on in the Seaball Get Ball. Less than a week away from the national championship championship game, no one picked Indiana, no one picked Miami. You look at all those preseason like, you know they use the, the emblem, right? The logo and like all the teams I remember seeing and they've showed them recently of just team after team after team after team and whole websites and nobody had either one of them picked to be here. And Miami gets a home game for a chance to hold off maybe one of the best stories in the history of college football when you think about Indiana and the turnaround being the losing his program in the history of college football to now going to the playoff, coming to the playoff a second time, really trying to do something obviously special that hasn't been done, that everybody's marveled at team, a team in Miami too, that it's really grown. Like if you're watching Miami throughout the season, I think it started and again the two teams that had the highest, the highest, the two teams that were in the number one spot in the, in the seaboard ball rankings, the most Indiana and Miami throughout the season because Miami came out the gates on fire, right like they look, they were killing people up front on the, on the line of scrimmage, on the defensive line of scrimmage. Both sides playing really good. Carson Beck was on fire. They hit that mid season low and you're like okay, wait a minute, like do I pump the brakes? Beck went through a couple games where four turnovers, four picks against Louisville, you know, two picks against smu. They lose two games. But then since then, man, I think they've really found their rhythm, found who they are played really, really good. Obviously now, you know, getting to this point, Carson, Beck, Malachi, Tony, Mark Fletcher, all clicking along with the defense and getting Scott back healthy at that nickelback spot was a big deal for them. And just a team that's built on, like, physicality, like, built on toughness, built on their coach, built on enormous human beings. Like, there's not going to be a. There's. There's going to be a clear discrepancy between one side of the ball and the other. When you watch Miami's offensive line, you're gonna be like, that's a lot of booty. Like, that's a lot. And they can move people off the rock. Like, that's what they do. That's who they are. That's how it's built against an Indiana defense has been so great against the run, so great at rushing the passer, so great at getting TFLs, like that ground and pound style that body blows. Carson Beck, 15 touchdowns, two interceptions since their last loss. Like Carson Beck, really good versus zone coverage. My. Or Indiana runs mainly. Mainly zone coverage. Like Carson Beck running the ball really well recently and doing a great job. Fletcher on fire, running the rock, breaking tackles. So, you know, Miami knows who they are. The question is, can anybody get Indiana off their game plan? And what they do, because what Indiana does is they play their own game on their own schedule, on their own time. Everything's been really easy for them, and they've made everything look so easy. You want to know how easy? Like their offense. Mendoza's 31 of 36 in the playoff, 31 of 36. He's got eight touchdowns, five incompletions. You heard that right. Five against Bama and Oregon, five total incompletions with eight touchdowns. Like, that's not normal. That's not human. Best completion percentage, no ints. Perfect in the red zone. Elite on third downs. What can I mention that they haven't done great like Indiana's played on their terms? The passing game, Surratt, Cooper, Becker throughout the season. Now you've seen. You saw in the last game, too. If he's open, that dude's six foot three, six four. He's got tentacles for arms. Like every time it's a contested catch, like it's. It's on top of someone with his long arms that just stretch out and just kind of suction cup it in. So can. Can. Can Miami get Indiana to do something they haven't done all year, like play on their schedule and really dominate those trenches? There's A bunch of. A bunch of big question marks. But I think that's where it starts really up front is, can they win the line of scrimmage? Can Miami win up front? Which is exactly what Crystal Ball preaches. It's what he lives. It's what he recruits. It's the body types he wants, man. That's exactly what he's searching for. Those the dudes he want. Can Miami control the clock? Like Miami's got to control the clock and play a little, keep away. Play keep away from the number one pick. That would be fantastic. Can Miami avoid mistakes? Like a lot of mistakes in the last game? That's why the game was close first two games of the playoff. Very good at limiting mistakes. And when I say mistakes, penalties. They don't have the passing game that can overcome those penalties. Can they stay away from that and avoid those mistakes, those turnovers? Can the best pass rush in the country get home like they have? They are number one in the nation in sacks. They do it consistently. First two games, they had 12 sacks. Last game, not so much. Right? Like we're not affecting Trinidad Chambers. Why Trinidad? Chambers got the ball out quick. Mendoza gets the ball out quick, reads coverages, reads, leverages. Get the balls. Get the balls out, makes plays. And I think the last real key for. For Miami, for me, can they get Mendoza on the ground when they get there? Because he does such a great job. You forget he's 6, 5, 235, by the way he moves. But he does such a good job of kind of shrugging people off and just making people miss. And Scott blitzes a lot off that slot. He makes plays. Obviously, you got Mendoza, Bain and company up front, but when they get there, can they get him on the ground? And I can't wait to talk to coach Mark Rick. I can't wait for y' all to hear this conversation we had with him earlier. It was an unbelievable one great conversation. Just about Miami. Who he waited behind is fascinating. Like the names you will know of hall of Famers, of the reason why Mark Brick didn't get to get on the field as fast as he wanted to or have a lot of success are the reasons why. So we gave you some good keys for. For Miami, I think on the other side, for. For Indiana, like, can they stay on script? Can they keep the running game going? Can they get past the front four of Miami? Because that's the key. Like you saw Lacy last game, right? Like, when you get past the front, Miami becomes more human. Like, the best part of Their defense is that front wall. And when you get by them, there'll be more missed tackles, more opportunities to make big plays, and so they'll have to be able to. To do a good job of that. And the running game has been consistent for them all year long. Man, they've been so good at it. Just so good at it. And Ken Smith, Carter Smith and company up front, protect Mendoza. Can they keep him upright? Can they give him time? Obviously, they've done a good job. They've done a good enough job. And he's been pressured a bunch, but he continues to make plays under pressure. So can he keep that up, too? Like, that's the one thing. Under pressure, he's completing the highest percentage of passes in all of college football. Indiana, can they. Can they get the physicality? Can they stop the ground and pound the straight ahead for Miami? Can you tackle? Can you tackle? Can Indiana make tackles in zone coverage underneath? Like, that's a big. That'll be a big key this game. They play zone the whole time. Me and Brent have talked to you on this show all year long. What does Carson Beck do such a good job of, such a great job of zone. See it, get it out, get it to his playmakers. Marion's been doing so much better and coming on, but Tony, you catches the ball underneath on third and eight. If he catches it at three yards, he can break two or three tackles and get to that first down marker, move the sticks and dude, he's off and running. So, you know, can you do. Can you do a good job in your zone coverages and tackle that underneath stuff and make Carson Beck kind of kind of flinch a little bit and then can you get him in third and longs? Like, that's the. That's the last part to me, the last key for. For Indiana, because this offense becomes very human in third and long. Like, you get them in third and longs, it's not where they want to be. Can they operate in it? Yes, but not like. Not like Mendoza and company. Now, Brent Rollins from on three from. From. Pff.
Brent Rollins
That's even on my shirt.
David Pollack
Yeah, baby, I see it.
Wesley
That's right.
David Pollack
I can see. I look past the camera in front of me. I can see it. You know, can you get back in those third and longs and make him have to make plays? But. But we get to pick this game. We get to talk about the keys. We get to talk about all that stuff, man. But I know you were one of those that had preseason picks like, just like me and Ain't nobody picked Indiana and ain't nobody picked Miami to win it. That's for dang sure.
Brent Rollins
Yeah, I think looking back at what we talked about in terms of that, mine was Georgia and Oregon, so it at least had a chance. At least had a chance for a.
David Pollack
Little bit, but you at least got there, unlike mine.
Brent Rollins
Yeah. Hashtag all in was hashtag all out this year. That is the Clemson Tigers. But the two things I think that you discussed there, that to me are the most interesting parts of this game are one, the style and or pace of the game. Because if you think back to Indiana and Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game, I think it was 57 plays on one side and like 59, you know, it was like upper 50s in terms of plays for each offense. Does. Does Miami want to live in that world? They had 91 plays against Ole Miss. I think they want to live in that, you know, upper 50s world, very slow pace, stay on the field, that kind of world. And I think that favors Miami. Yes, like that. And so if they can. If so, if pace, to me, if the pace of the game is that.
David Pollack
And you know how they do that, how they do that. Is there anybody better than Miami when it comes to pushing a pile with their big boys? Like, they're, they're really fun to watch. Like, they pushed Fletcher 14 or 18 yards down the field one time. Like, literally just kind of, hey, this is a magic carpet, right? Like, just come on, bud. Like, we'll just. When. When Frank Big Francis, Maui Noah is 365 or whatever he is. If he had a biscuit this morning, he's probably a little bit heavier when he starts pushing people. Like, that pile just falls forward when Fletcher comes downhill. And that's a good way to ask.
Brent Rollins
You about that, actually.
David Pollack
Do you.
Brent Rollins
Do you like that that they're able to do that? Because I think progress for progress is one that should be a little stopped, a little quick. Because when they just get pushed in the pile, almost bet half the times the running backs told to keep your feet off the ground and just let everybody carry you.
David Pollack
Basically, it's a smart way. Well, and defense is, man, like one. You work on so many drills, and this is going to sound really stupid, but you work on so many drills on tackling back. Like, first guy get in there, grab him, stop the momentum. Second guy pull backwards. Like. Yeah, but now you're. You're fighting off a 350, a 340, and trying to get your piece of a guy to pull him back. While you're getting speared in the back from, from that 340 or 350. But it's definite. Definitely changed it because remember, you should not be able to invade or evade runners and help them go forward. So it's definitely, it's definitely changed the game and changed the running game. I don't, I don't care for it. I feel like it's hard to, it's hard to see when forward progress is stopped and where the body is in there, you know, like you don't really, you don't really know what's going on. So you're right, I'm not for it. Honestly, I don't like it that much. But if I, if they let me do it, I'm gonna do it.
Brent Rollins
Yeah. You talked about getting Mendoza on the ground against Ohio State. He was pressured on 50% of his drop backs. He was sacked three times, had four throwaways. He was only, he was 6 of 10 for 62 yards in that game when he was pressured. So I think I actually. And we look at when there's an anchor, when there's one spot, one weakness, one weak link on your offensive line and Indiana has that at right tackle. I think Miami's gonna find it. And I think they're like, look what they did to Texas A M. Like they just now granted completely different offenses, schemes, all that sort of stuff, but they found the weak link and were able to consistently attack it. And it's kind of similar in that vein. But one thing that's just. And we touched on it just a little bit on Monday, Xavier Lucas being out for the first half because the targeting.
David Pollack
Stupid, so stupid is just huge and.
Brent Rollins
Stupid because he's a bigger corner like and that's the guy you want to be able to have to place the.
David Pollack
Rat or Becker, either one.
Brent Rollins
Like yes. And that, that there last thing though is. And you, you touched on it a little bit tackling him being black or top 20 backs in the power four in terms of yards after contact. Miami, if you look at one just massive wart on their profile as a team is tackling. They have eight straight games where they've missed double digit tackles.
David Pollack
Well and that's where, that's where I said getting to the second level so important because that first level, if you get by that first level on that defense, there's plays to be made. Like there are good linebackers who are smart, who are heady or where they're supposed to be, but they're not freakazoids like those front four Are those front?
Brent Rollins
And it's not just the backs either. Like Cooper, fourth most missed tackles forced. Receiver. Omar Cooper. By the way, do you think you could name who number one is in terms of receivers forcing missed tackles in the power four?
David Pollack
Branch Close.
Brent Rollins
He's also playing in this game.
David Pollack
Malachi, Tony.
Brent Rollins
Yeah, Malachi Tony. So whoever, like whoever in Indiana is one of the better tackling teams in the country so that like if Miami can tackle well, keep the pace of the game where they want, I think they can very much stay in this game and potentially even win it. Well, let's pick a, make a pick.
David Pollack
I got Indiana not making any bones about it. I think Miami has to win the way we just talked about. I don't think they can win another way. Indiana, if they get some penalties, if they make some mistakes and get in third and long, they can overcome them. They have enough tools in the chest to overcome them. And they got the Heisman Trophy winner. They got the number one picket quarterback in the NFL draft. Like, this dude isn't just good. Like, he's one of the all time goods, like one of the all time greats. Like, this dude is an absolute stud. And I just think job's not done. I, I haven't seen him relax from his Heisman Trophy speech. I haven't seen him relax after the first playoff game. Like, I just think he's made of all the right stuff and I think his ability to run and break tackles and make plays in this offense score in the red zone is the difference in the game. But I do think Miami's going to run the ball right at him and, and, and chew up some of that clock and shrink some of the game. But I don't think it's going to be enough because I don't think Indiana is going to make mistakes. They're not going to turn the football over. It's just not who they are, man. They haven't been that all year long.
Brent Rollins
The thing you think that made me, I picked this earlier and I'm going opposite of you.
David Pollack
Oh.
Brent Rollins
But the thing and the thing that made me confirm that is what did you talk about in the very beginning tonight? It's been easy for them. Like, granted, Ohio State was not. But the playoffs have been. Now granted you could say, oh, they, it wasn't like it was easy to go up so big, but they haven't had to sweat. And I think they're gonna have to. And I think they're gonna have to play some play Very uncomfortable in this game. And I, I Would just Canes.
David Pollack
I would just say if 2320. I would say if you're going to make them feel uncomfortable like Penn State did or like Iowa did.
Brent Rollins
Yeah.
David Pollack
Mendoza got the ball and he delivered.
Brent Rollins
And that's, that's the hardest thing about making that pick.
David Pollack
That's the. No, I get it. Listen, I think it's, I think it's a 10 point game. I don't, I don't. One thing you won't get here is spreads and picks. Like we're not, we're not gamblers. We're not going to curse. We're not going to do it. Like we're going to try to be as kid friendly as possible. Even though the other you kind of worked. Not really. I dropped some, you know your version, my version of curse words. But, but I think it's, I think if it's, it's, it's Indiana, you know, just making enough plays. But I will not be surprised if Miami makes it difficult on because I would. Iowa has a great offensive line, a great defensive line could make it a little bit hard for him and I hope for our case, man, we got an all timer game.
Brent Rollins
Like that's, that's what I care about more than anything. I want to watch four quarters of great football in games like this super bowl. That kind like all that stuff. Give me four quarters of great football. Hey, much like we had last week in the NFL. That was awesome. A lot of all those games going down the wire and come back the.
David Pollack
Team that was trailing at the two minute warning won almost every game.
Wesley
Yep.
David Pollack
That was absolute pandemonium. Nuts.
Brent Rollins
I hope you have that on Monday.
David Pollack
Hope we do too.
Brent Rollins
Anyway, I'm going to canes.
David Pollack
I like that.
Wesley
I like the.
David Pollack
You.
Coach Mark Rick
Yeah.
David Pollack

Coached at the U, played at the U, coached at Georgia for a long time. A lot of success. ACC analyst. You'll hear all about it. But my man, Coach Rick gave us some good Nuggets, talked about the Miami team and talked about the traditions, the culture, all that stuff. Unbelievable interview. Listen up to coach Mark R. We think guy that wears and has worn a lot of hats, not currently wearing one. But Coach Mark Rick, who was my coach at the University of Georgia, coached obviously the Miami Hurricanes, college football hall of Famer, played at the University of Miami, which people don't necessarily know. Maybe some of the younger folk don't know on ACC Network doing television. So a guy that's done dang coach, the list just keeps growing on all these things you keep adding to the resume.
Coach Mark Rick
Unbelievable actor. Unbelievable author. It's just, it never ends.
David Pollack
What, what can't Coach Mark Rick do? All right, so here's what I want to do, Coach. I want you to take me back to the University of Miami and going there to play football. And I want you to tell me what it was like. And I wanted you to tell people who was in the room that you were competing with in your time at Miami, right?
Coach Mark Rick
Well, when I got recruited by Lou Saban, not Nick Saban, he was. I was told that I was going to be the quarterback to save his program. And of course I believed him. And I had all my plans to start as a freshman and All American my second year and my junior year. I was going to win the Heisman and go pro. The only problem with my plan was Jim Kelly was living out my plan for me because they brought Jim in in the same freshman class. So I had myself and Jim Kelly and then two years later they added a couple guys. One guy's name was Bernie Kozar and the other guy's name was Vinny Testaverde. So, yeah, Jim, who's the first rounder? Vinnie was a first rounder first pick of the draft, won the Heisman. Bernie Kozar won a national championship in 83 with Howard Schnellenberger and then little O me. But anyway, I, I think the Lord knew I was going to coach quarterbacks and not actually be one. So he let me hang around really a lot of good ones to, to know what they look like.
David Pollack
He lets you see what it looked like in live and living color right next to every day. Hey, but I, I did do some, I did do a little bit of digging, Coach. And one of the things that comes up when I, when I googled or not googled, I used AI for Mark Rick. The rally round. Rick. Coach Rick coming in for Jim Kelly when he got hurt. Correct.
Coach Mark Rick
I mean I did play when, when he got hurt in the ball game. We were actually losing that particular game to the Gators and I think I completed two out of 13 passes. But one was a huge first down that set up the game winning field goal. And another one was a 55 yard touchdown pass to Rocky Bo. You could memorize that stuff when you only have two completions in a game like that. But we ended up beating the Gators that day with a walk off field goal. I think it hit the upright, it went in. Danny Miller, a teammate of mine, because Howard was trying to decide if we're going to launch one in the end zone or try to kick a 55 yard field goal. And Danny came up to him on the sideline, said I could do it, coach. So coach called timeout, ran the field goal team in and Danny, Danny drilled it.
David Pollack
Well, that, that's that. Yeah, I looked that up. I saw that story, coach. And then I heard about cookies were being sent from, from alumni to your dorm. Can you confirm that?
Coach Mark Rick
I don't know if I remember that or not.
David Pollack
They said cookies and treats and all kinds. They said everybody rallied around Coach Mark.
Coach Mark Rick
Rick, who was more than likely. All that stuff got stolen off the door in front of the door before, before I opened it with the teammates I had. We all lived in the same apartment complex. So you could imagine the chance of cookies making it to my room.
David Pollack
They didn't make it to you. What did it mean to you too, coach? Because obviously Miami playing in the national title, to watch that, it's got to be, got to be fun as an alum. But there's a picture going around, Coach, of you and Malachi. Tony and Malachi. Tony was a wee little dude. But people don't realize, people don't remember like you had. I think it was 9 and 4 the first season. Then y' all won 10 games. Like, y' all had it cooking a little bit. But he was at this camp that you guys did that obviously inspired him, and he's from that area. But how did y' all run those camps? And what was the.
Coach Mark Rick
Well, yeah, I mean, as you know, David, we would always do community service as a team at Georgia. We did the same thing at Miami. And I think that particular year, we might have led the nation in community service hours. But as you see that picture there, I'm at a camp. I'm at a park, a local park. And what we knew was a lot of those kids couldn't find a way to come to our campus. So we decided to have satellite camps. We had five or six a summer. We'd go to different camps throughout the communities and. And give them a free camp, a free camp experience with our players. So our players would show up with their jerseys on and. And we'd rally those dudes up and. And we'd have a summer football camp. Mark Riggs summer football camp, University of Miami summer football camp, more specifically. And, you know, a lot of those guys, you know, they probably planted seeds in some of their hearts. Malachi, Tony being one of them.
Brent Rollins
He. He.
Coach Mark Rick
He probably would have gone to Miami anyway.
David Pollack
I don't.
Coach Mark Rick
I don't know that. But you never know when a seed like that gets planted. And all of a sudden, he gets to realize his dream when he grows up. But I've been getting kind of. I've been having inundated with that story, that picture. People wanted to make, make sure it was actually Malachi, and it is, in fact, Malachi, Tony in that photo. So a lot of cool stuff going on.
David Pollack
So the heart behind it was what then, Coach? Just to get the mix.
Coach Mark Rick
Well, the line was, you know, we love these kids, and we wanted them to have a camp experience, and they couldn't afford it. Not only could they not afford camp experience, they didn't have a way to get to our camp, our campus. So he said, you know what? We're gonna. Instead of, you know, at Georgia, we'd load up a bunch of kids in the community and bring them. Bring them on campus and do the same thing. But in Miami instead. We loaded our team up, we loaded our players up, our coaching staff, our equipment man. And we rallied everybody, activated everybody we got. We got in the bus and we went to the. Went to their parks and the parks in that area. You know, there's a lot of kids in those neighborhoods that really come from fatherless homes. And the moms really relied heavily on the local community coaches in that area to help stand in the gap for those, for those boys, for their sons and just a vital part of those communities. And we knew that. So the best way to do it was to go, go to them and let them know we love them and care about them and, and if somebody becomes a superstar, you know, five, six, seven, ten years down the road, whatever it is, great. But in the meantime, we're trying to bless as many of those little guys as we could.
David Pollack
Well, what's crazy, coaches, and I know you break this down at a high level with the ACC stuff, they're not here without Malachi. Tony, like, talk about that dude's game, man. I mean, he is to be that young and to be on campus. And it's not just the easy catches that dude catches. You know, he obviously catches everything and.
Coach Mark Rick
The run after the catch, obviously. And the thing about him, you know, most people know he's supposed to be in high school right now. He, he declared, you know, to be a senior in his junior year of high school, made his junior year, high school his last year. And so, you know, now he's, he's who he is in the national, national championship game as a kid. That should still be a senior in high school. It's amazing, the story. And of course, as you know, he's had some fumble issues and he's been brokenhearted in the middle of a game and has, you know, former teammates from high school on his team and coming up to him and letting him know how much they love him and trust him and he's got to get back in the game and make a play and sure enough he'll come back and make the game winning touchdown. So Mark Fletcher, the running back on for Miami, was a high school teammate as well. And Malachi actually was a quarterback in high school and had a similar situation in high school where he fumbled the ball and they, I think they lost the state championship because of it. So he was crushed when it happened in college. But his, his high school teammate and his current teammate, you know, got to him and got him back in the right frame of mind and the kid ends up making a game winning play.
David Pollack
That's cool. What about the guy that's throwing to him? What have you seen from Carson back this season?
Coach Mark Rick
Yeah, you know, Carson for the most part has had a tremendous year. I mean, he did have a rough go in the Louisville game through a few picks and, you know, two zone admission was probably the worst college game he ever played. And so that didn't help that game for sure. But, you know, because of the fact that he, you know. Well, let's, let's back up one year. Cam Ward, right? Miami gets Cam Ward last year player, a senior, whatever you want to call it, he comes in and lights it up and, you know, becomes the first pick of the draft, I think.
David Pollack
Yes, sir.
Coach Mark Rick
So he's gone. So now Miami's got to find another quarterback. Well, they decided to use the same formula, get a very veteran guy, a senior to come in and take on that leadership role, but also, you know, take up, take on the role of being a guy that can make it happen with a couple minutes to go in the game, to win the game like he did last week. So they bring him in, he does a super job of connecting with his teammates and he had, he had credibility coming in for sure.
David Pollack
Had a few wins on a big, on some big stages with some good, with some good spots. Yeah.
Coach Mark Rick
So they knew who he was, they trusted who he was. And they saw one year ago, if you believe in your quarterback like they do with Cam Moore, that it could happen again. And sure enough, he's done wonderful things for Miami and in particular the last ball game where they had to have that game winning drive. He did what he had to do, so he's been great and the guys believe in him. And the thing of it too is Miami's got a tremendous offensive line. They protect really well, they run the ball very well. You know, all the pressure is not on him. Like last year, Cam Ward, you know, he had, they had to score 50 points a game sometimes just to win. But this, this team is built different. As you know, the defensive ends, you more than anybody would know these two guys, Bane and Mazador, how unbelievable they are. Very similar to your style of play. Just relentless dudes that would get after people and, you know, so he's got a great defense, they have a great kicking game. I think, I think Coach Cristobal learned a lot of things last year. I think that he made some mistakes, critical mistakes in a couple games. From a coaching standpoint, I think he's learned from those and has handled the clock as well as anybody could hope.
David Pollack
Give me some, give me some Mario Cristobal stories. When did you ever meet him or get to know him? Because he's a, he's a fun, eclectic. He's a different bird, man. I love him. He's a different bird.
Coach Mark Rick
The first time I met him was on the road Recruiting, actually recruiting in Miami. Think he's head coach at Oregon at the time. And he's in town in Miami recruiting those dudes. And I'm in Miami recruiting those guys. And, and so, you know, I just met him, we were both at the same school at the same time, you know, recruiting the same dude, recruiting the same guy. And he's very, you know, he was an offensive lineman. He's a big dude. He's. He's a guy that has a great presence about him. And you look at him and you see authority, you see a football player, you see a no nonsense guy that has a great game plan, you know, and so, but, you know, as I retired from coaching and he became the head coach in Miami eventually when I came on campus to visit for an alumni event or whatever it was, he was like bent over backwards to welcome me and tell me, coach, you could come to any practice you ever want to come to. You can sit in any meeting you want to sit in. You got carte blanche to this program any time you want. And that meant a lot to me as a former player and as a former coach. So I'm a big Mario fan for sure.
David Pollack
When you look at who they're playing, was there ever a day back in your day, back in any day that you go, Indiana is going to be the number one team in the country and have a chance to win a national title.
Coach Mark Rick
Yeah, you never would have dreamed it. And we know why. We know the changing of the nil and the, all the money that's becoming an equalizer for programs across the country. And you know, of course, Coach Signetti, what he's done is nothing short of a miracle. It's kind of like when Howard Snellenberg took over Miami and they had like no shot to be good. You know, they hadn't been good in forever and it, but it took four years in the old fashioned way of doing things to build a team and all that. After four years, you know, Howard took him to the national championship with Bernie Kosar, like I mentioned before, in 1983. Well, Signetti did it in two years because of the way that, you know, the NCAA works now. Football with the nil, with the roster, management, the roster changing. I mean, this guy brought in a bunch of guys from a smaller school that he knew and trusted. And we all know the story. They don't have a five star on the team, but they got a bunch of guys that believe. A bunch of guys that are paying the price on a daily basis. And they are a machine the way that quarterback's been playing has been machine. Like, of course he won the Heisman. Fernando Mendoza, the kid was at Cal.
David Pollack
He might not have been a five star coach, but what does he not do at a five star level?
Coach Mark Rick
He is so consistent, he is so accurate. He's so tough and he's athletic. I mean, this, this guy plays like the team plays like a machine. And it's hard to get to him, it's hard to shake him up. They got a great scheme, they got a lot of great players that maybe not everybody's heard of, but you know by now they better have heard of them because of what they, what they've been able to accomplish in this playoff.
David Pollack
You ain't lying. What point in the season this year did you go, I think Miami could do this. Was there a point in the season when you started to say, like, I think Miami could win this whole thing or be a serious contender?
Coach Mark Rick
Well, even before the season started, I knew what they had up front. I knew. I visited spring ball when Cam was there, when Cam Ward was there. And I was like, wow, these, this offensive line is really good.
David Pollack
A lot of small guys, Coach.
Coach Mark Rick
What's that?
David Pollack
A lot of small guys up there.
Coach Mark Rick
Oh, I know, it's unbelievable. I mean, Bowie Noah, that big joker, I coached him in the Polynesian bowl when I coached the high school All Star game in Hawaii and Maui. No, he was not only the best offensive lineman, he's the best defensive lineman on the, in the, in the entire all star game. But him, along with his other cohorts are giving those quarterbacks a lot of time to throw in those running back space to run. And then you knew what they had with Bain and you thought Mesador was going to be a stud this year. So as you know, David, when teams get out class, it's usually up front. They usually cannot stand up. They cannot hold up to a great defensive line or offensive line. But I knew Miami had that and I knew Carson was going to be a heck of a quarterback. And we saw enough from Fletcher last year and a lot of the skilled guys that they had in the past. Then you're thinking, you know what? They have enough skill set, they have enough physicality to play with anybody.

Coach Mark Rick
Now can they play consistently enough to win a championship? That's the big question. And they were hot and cold for a minute but the la when had to win after the second loss and the thought that they might not get in the, in the tournament unless they really improved everybody's opinion of them from that point on. They, they went, they went off and.
David Pollack
And they had knew they had to lock in. Then they knew they had to lock in. All right, so what, what do you think? You mentioned Indiana and you mentioned Signetti in the turnaround. Like what do you think of today's college football? Obviously so different than the college football you entered and left. But like what do you, what is Coach Rick's, you know, big thoughts on the new college football world?
Coach Mark Rick
Well, to, to change a team's roster as quickly as you can, it's without a doubt an equalizer. You know, in the past, you know, a team like Alabama could acquire a lot of talent. And I'm not going to say exactly how they acquired it, but the bottom line was they could have two or three. Their first and second team could be all first round draft picks and those kids would be happy just to wait their turn and go through the system and become that guy eventually down the road. Well now they can make money today. So those second teamers that are first rounders at a lot of these schools are like, you know what, I'm going to Indiana or I'm going to wherever because I can not only play now, but I get paid now. And so that's what's happening more. These teams, these monster teams don't have quite as much depth as they used to have because their second teamers are going to other schools and making the big money and becoming starters. And because of that, that's equalizing the, the talent base. And so that's why you can see, you know, a, an Indiana all of a sudden become, you know, the number one team.
David Pollack
And I might have been intimating a little bit what I say coach, that NIL stands for. Now it's legal.
Coach Mark Rick
Now it's legal. That's that's 100. And it's so true. I mean, people have asked me, coach, would you want to coach during this era? I said, well, you know what? I'll say this. My bag of money would have been as big as everybody else's bag of money if you were allowed to pay players, if it was legal, because I didn't have a bag of money back in the day, you know, so it wouldn't have bothered me to not lose guys at the last second because some extracurricular activities were going on, that's for sure. But to build team, it's very hard. It's much harder to build team. And, you know, part of being a college coach is taking a guy from boyhood demanded, okay, you. A lot of most guys show up in a boyhood stage, you know, as far as they're still a little immature and undependable, and they are, you know, look for other people to help them. And so you want them to grow into men, but in order to do that, a lot of times you got to discipline them. Well, if you discipline them back in the day, that it was what it was. But if you try to discipline them today, they're like, I'm out. I'm transferring out. I'm not going to do that. And so it's. It's very difficult to help kids grow up. And it's also hard to build team because everybody's kind of work. Word. Word. Worried more about their own personal brand than the G or the. The U on their helmet.
David Pollack
Talked about back in the day. Bags of cash. That's one thing with Coach Rick that I've enjoyed so much as he's gotten older. Straight honesty, like, it's coming. It's coming with no filter. And appreciate you joining this coach. And I think the I. The last question, actually, Wes jumped in and asked him about how it was dealing with me as an immature age, and he was like, it was a problem. Brent would echo that, too. The younger I was, the more big of a pain in the butt. I am still am a pain in the butt. It was just less. Less of a pain in the butt now.
Brent Rollins
Well, hey, that's true. And, you know, while we're listening to Coach Rick, I. I was reading the book that we have with the men's group with Coach Rick in the morning and the picture with Malachi Tony. I. So I follow. And because I used to actually write for the Miami website a long time ago, five, six years ago, did some writing on the side. There's a lot of Miami people That pull up on my timeline, and I saw that picture with him and Malachi Tony, like, almost instantly when it came up there, and I sent it to him, and it was like, think about that. That you impact something that is now in a sort of national championship form. And that kid is a player. Also interesting where he brought up Cam Ward. Like, that's something we haven't really talked about. They lost the number one pick in the draft, and they're now in the national championship.
Coach Mark Rick
Yep.
Brent Rollins
So.
David Pollack
And there.
Brent Rollins
Hey, go ahead.
David Pollack
Go ahead.
Brent Rollins
I was gonna say one other fun thing is you mentioned the everyday counts nutrition with the ad there before.
David Pollack
Yeah.
Brent Rollins
Or the every. Yeah, that's what it's called. Right.
David Pollack
Yeah.
Brent Rollins
I saw. I saw a tweet that you got a book coming out.
David Pollack
Yeah. A lot of pictures. I mean, a lot of pictures, Brent. A lot of pictures.
Brent Rollins
Yeah, it took fun. Is that fun with your, you know, posing with the pictures with the ball and all that?
David Pollack
And that was the easy part, Brent. Writing a book was impossible. I mean, sitting down with my ADD and writing a book, it was very, very, very, very tough to sit down to. To be able to, like, focus your thoughts and then have to organize them and stuff. It was definitely. It was definitely tough. It was.
Brent Rollins
It was.
David Pollack
It was a struggle for me. And it took a multitude of years to do it, let's put it that way.
Brent Rollins
I may have talked to Mark S.L. about. About that at the SEC championship game. He said, yeah, it's. It's been a little bit. You've caught up with me now.
David Pollack
You've got two with books. Wow.
Brent Rollins
Minor textbooks, though. Mine are very boring textbooks.
David Pollack
Yeah. But one was a children's book with a lot. A lot of pictures.
Brent Rollins
So it still has your name on it.
David Pollack
Yeah.
Brent Rollins
I still remember. I still remember the very moment that I told you you should write a book and you should call it Every Day Counts.
David Pollack
Yeah.
Brent Rollins
Like, I remember where we were and all that.
David Pollack
So you told me. You told me to do a lot of things that I've done. That's been very successful portal news for you guys. Interesting. I think one of the most interesting one period is Dylan Raiola going to Oregon. I think it's a brilliant play for Dylan Raiola. I think it's. I think it's absolutely fantastic. Dante Moore returns, and here's why. I think it's great, man. He's going to get to sit behind Dante Moore unless something happens. He's going to get to learn the offense at an insane level. Now, listen, I don't know if it's changed his mind either with Dante Moore coming.
Brent Rollins
Well, so my thing was, did he sign that in pencil or did he put the ink on that thing?
David Pollack
If, if I was him, I would, red shirt, take that bag of money. Because that bag of money is life changing. And Oregon can do it. Oregon can pay a couple guys three or $4 million apiece. Like, they can afford to do that. Raul gets to sit, learn the terminology, learn the offense. Moore goes off into the sunset takeover. He's got several years, he's got at least two years to lead the Oregon Ducks with one of the best weapons, tight ends all across the field. Great team, great coach. Like, I think it'd be a great move for him. I think there's a lot of people that we pissed off and like, wait a minute, like, we need a qb. Miami still on the hunt. Miami's offering Ty Simpson cheddar. Like, how about Ty Simpson, man? Loved it. Like, loved him saying, I was a captain at Alabama. I can't go to Tennessee, I can't go to Ole Miss. Like, I can't go to Miami. It has nothing to do with anything else. I just can't do that. Dude, as an old guy that respects the piss out of that, like, I can't tell you how much I was like, man, kudos to that young man. Ty Simpson saying that. Justice Haynes going to Georgia Tech. I think Justice Haynes, when he played last year, was the third best running back in college football.
Brent Rollins
Third.
David Pollack
Literally the third. He's a baller. Really, really good. Physical. Again, go make that cheddar. I wish he played with Haynes. King. I could. I wish we could have got the Hanes together at the same time without Buster. I have a lot of questions. I have more questions than answers about Georgia Tech for the future.
Brent Rollins
I agree.
David Pollack
But that dude is an absolute stud.
Brent Rollins
So speaking two things would relate to the portal. Like, think about the teams we have next year because of the portal. We have the. I wrote them down. We have the Penn State Cyclones, we have the Virginia Tech nitty lines. We have the Auburn Bulls, the Florida Yellow Gators, the Michigan Wolver Utes, and then the Oklahoma State Mean Green. I'm probably missing a few that we got there that blended basically where teams go there. But I think the biggest portal pickup, where an entire fan base is dancing in the streets and saying hallelujah. Finally just happened about a two, two or three hours ago. Connor Hawkins, the kicker from Baylor, is going to Ohio State. I bet Buckeye fans are like, finally.
David Pollack
No, no, got a kicker. Nobody's excited about a kicker. Unless it's old Mrs. Kicker. There's probably a little bit of more of a.
Brent Rollins
Like, they were really excited when they got Caleb Downs and Quinton Judkins and Will Howard and all that. But kicker something that.
David Pollack
Yeah, Buckeyes are not celebrating that whatsoever. When he makes kicks, they might celebrate it. He might got to make it first yarder. Yeah, he's got to make them. All right, Podium kings, we've done this every week. We got one for you to start it off. New guy in a new place spitting some rhymes. What we got, Wesley?
Wesley
What's happening? Yeah, man, I. I wish that question had gotten through to Coach Rick because that was a great part of the interview. You might have some like, jumbled up audio in our archives that I can bring up another episode. So first up, we got. We're in the Big Ten guy that you like a lot, Pat Fitz, Michigan State. And this. Look, if this don't light your fire, your wood's wet. I don't throw that around. I'm not going to play the whole thing. But y' all got to check it out. I'll link it in the episode description. Michigan State, if they play the way that this session goes with Fitz here in this video, they will be a problem.
David Pollack
This is a rebirth, not a rebuild. So how are we going to do that? We have to grind every minute of every day. And then when they ask us at this time next year, what happened? How did this happen? Wow, what a turnaround. None of us in this room will be surprised.
Wesley
So I want to ask you, all this turnover just came out of the Portal editions. We're talking about Portal players ad nauseam every episode. Now it seems like it's kind of more of an NFL culture in a lot of locker rooms. You're not buying into the same coach year in and year out. How effective do you think that kind of coaching can still be moving forward for a program like that?
David Pollack
It's harder. It's harder to be a. To be a coach that's not transactional in a transactional world. And I think Pat Fitzgerald cut his teeth with Northwestern. Like a relationship guy. 100% a relationship guy. So now you go and live in a world. Here's what Pat Fitzgerald did, talking to him, because I've talked to him back and forth quite a bit. He said, dude, all I did the last several years while all this other stuff was going on was just tried to learn. I spent time with all these coaches, all of them, everybody, you know, like. And then he and then he goes to go green, go white. And here's the thing. Michigan State's had some good years, and that's what he's talking about. This is a rebirth, like, not a rebuild. Like, we've done this before. Like, I know how to do this. Follow me. I've been in this league, so you got to be excited about having Pat Fitzgerald, especially the man. The man's a great man sticking in.
Wesley
The Big Ten and a guy that knows a lot about turnarounds. Sig and a beer, baby.
Coach Mark Rick
I'm really not thinking about the next game.
David Pollack
I'm thinking about cracking open a beer.
Wesley
Somewhere. Sam Pittman is smiling.
David Pollack
Oh, yes. Well, he named his beer, though. Sam was like, I want to cold something. I don't know. Beers. I don't drink beer. But like, he said he wanted one specific type. I don't remember what it was, but.
Wesley
I was like, I'm sure someone in.
David Pollack
The chat knows free marketing out of it, whoever it was.
Wesley
Yeah, you probably got a case of them back home.
Brent Rollins
All right.
David Pollack
Yeah, baby.
Wesley
Also, in the College Football Playoff semifinal, this was before the game, and y' all kind of ride this one out. This is kind of a montage of the pre game with Golding and Crystal Ball and Goldie's kind of being. For lack of a better term, he's kind of being a turd. But it's pretty dang funny between each game.
Coach Mark Rick
Go ahead.
Brent Rollins
Well, I mean, coaching, but program building.
David Pollack
Put me on the spot here.
Coach Mark Rick
I've learned so much from Coach Saban.
Brent Rollins
Not necessarily exception. Sure.
David Pollack
I think it's important to address the fact that.
Wesley
So if you're listening, I apologize. You gotta watch that. That clip specifically because it's a dual press conference with both of the coaches before the game, and it's one of those deals where, like, the reporters are asking both coaches the questions, and usually one guy will step up to the plate and take it. And Golding was having none of it. I don't know if it was some sort of psychological warfare or if he just clearly didn't want to be there.
David Pollack
But that was pretty funny. He was like, no, screw that, man. Like, you got it. Like, you got it, you got it, you got it. Like, he kept pointing to Crystal ball and being like, you got it. Which is. Which is absolutely amazing. So I thought that was. I thought that was super funny if you were watching it, because Crystal Ball clearly got upset. And I'm not saying, like, he got fighting mad, but he was just like, seriously, like, what is this crap? Like, I Answer another one. Answer another one. Answer another one. All right, well, we've already taken a lot of yalls time, so. Oh, we're going to land the plane. You know, this is something we said we wanted to do really early in our show. Like we wanted to show you the good things that were going on in college football because there's so many good things that are going on consistently in college football. Like great things behind the scene things. Guys that are giving their nil money to foundations and kids. And we saw Mendoza do it at the Heisman. Another unbelievable example, and it's not surprising that's coming out of Indiana. It's Drew. This little man named Drew, he's sick. He went to the Rose bowl with them and basically they got him hooked up and they did videos. A bunch of the players doing videos. And not surprising, Mendoza was one of them. But just telling Drew, like, listen, man, we can't do this without you, bro. Like, if you go back several years, he ran in a touchdown at. At the spring game and they, they all celebrated him and he's continued to fight some stuff, but he went to the Rose bowl and then now they got him tickets to the national championship game. So just another a thing to salute. You got the video here, Wesley. Are we going to play the video?
Wesley
I'll play it.
Coach Mark Rick
It's.
Wesley
It's pretty cool to watch foreign.
David Pollack
Hey, Drew, we knew you're with us at the Rose bowl and there's no way we could go to the national championship without you. Hey, Drew, we know you were in California at the Rose bowl supporting us. We're gonna need your support one more time. Hey, Drew, Isaiah Jones here. And we know you're out there with.
Coach Mark Rick
Us at the Rose bowl.
David Pollack
And you know we're heading to Miami and we can't go without the heart.
Coach Mark Rick
And soul of our team. What's up, little Drew, man?
David Pollack
We know you was with us at the Rose bowl, man, but look, we can't head and the biggest game of.
Coach Mark Rick
Our career, man, without you, brother.
David Pollack
The Hoosiers and the Impact team are sending you to Miami. Come on. So the Hoosiers and team Impact are sending you to Miami. Well, us and the Hoosiers and the Team Impact gonna send you out there to Miami, bro.
Coach Mark Rick
We'll see you soon, man.
David Pollack
Can't wait to see you. So, Team Impact, you wanted to send you to the national championship. Look forward to seeing you there.
Brent Rollins
Let's go.
David Pollack
Let's go. Hey, Drew, we knew you were with us. This is a great video. First of all, tip of the cap to Indiana and the company, obviously, for. For sending them out there, man. That's. That's really, really cool. Above and beyond. But little man at the end was. Was excited and his legs were kicking, if you can't see it. But his brother was out off the chain, like. Like, I think it was his brother or somebody next to him was just throwing, like, jumping up and down and pushing him, like, let's go. So, as if you needed enough reason to probably pull for Indiana, you got another one, man. Just. They've. They've been really, really cool in the spotlight and done some good things. You've seen it with Mendoza, and obviously you see it there. All right, dudes, well, we'll be back, man. Monday. Monday is national championship day. We might sneak in another interview before then as well. But Monday is. Is go time. Brennan, why you look so down right there, man? You got your head.
Brent Rollins
I was just kind of eyes on the tv, actually. What are you watching into the basketball game? George. George's basketball is playing. It's an overtime.
David Pollack
We're doing a show.
Brent Rollins
Brent, I thought you were landing the plane. You were talking about landing the plane.
David Pollack
Well, you know.
Brent Rollins
Hey, speaking of that. So do you know where Signetti kind of grew up and played college football and his dad coached?
David Pollack
No clue. West Virginia.
Wesley
Somewhere in West Virginia.
Brent Rollins
Virginia.
David Pollack
That would have been my guess.
Brent Rollins
Like, Sig played at West Virginia. Like, so him saying, hey, I'm going to crack up in beer. I mean, that's kind of what position. Kind of apropos. He was qb.
David Pollack
Position. Qb.
Brent Rollins
Yeah.
David Pollack
I did not know that. That's our Signetti fact. We'll have to figure out what beer he cracks open. He might have it on the field Monday night if they take care of business. So we'll see you dudes Monday, man. Appreciate all y' all liking rating, subscribing. We've continued to just climb and grow, and we're very, very thankful. Oh, we got a super chat real quick. Hold on. Good show, brother. Get up to Chapel Hill sometime and say hello. I ran into Danny Cannell at Chipotle last fall. Up here. Johnny Knoxville. We will. We might have to do that. They made a good hire as an oc. Bobby White, Bobby Petrino going to to unc. Would be interesting to work with Bill Belichick. Both of them getting AARP covered, baby. Older coaches still do some good things. See you guys Monday night after the national championship game for sure. Maybe sneak something else in. Have a great night. Peace. Host: David Pollack
Guests: Brent Rollins, Coach Mark Richt, Wesley
This episode delivers an in-depth, lively breakdown of the surprising Miami vs. Indiana national championship matchup—a clash no preseason pundit predicted. David Pollack and regulars Brent Rollins and Wesley dissect each team’s journey, strengths, game keys, and X’s and O’s, providing honest, knowledge-heavy college football analysis. Special guest Coach Mark Richt—former Miami head coach and College Football Hall of Famer—joins to share stories from his time at “The U,” weigh in on the matchup, and reflect on broader changes in college football.
“Maybe one of the best stories in the history of college football when you think about Indiana and the turnaround... being the losingest program... to now going to the playoff, coming to the playoff a second time...” (Pollack, 00:46)
“What Indiana does is they play their own game on their own schedule, on their own time. Everything’s been really easy for them, and they’ve made everything look so easy.” (Pollack, 04:49)
“When Frank Big Francis, Maui Noah is 365 or whatever... that pile just falls forward when Fletcher comes downhill.” (Pollack, 10:43)
“It’s a smart way... and defense is, man, like one… you work on so many drills on tackling back... But now you’re fighting off a 350, a 340, and trying to get your piece of a guy to pull him back.” (Pollack, 11:33)
“Whoever in Indiana is one of the better tackling teams... if Miami can tackle well, keep pace... they can very much stay in this game and potentially even win it.” (Rollins, 14:22)
“They got the Heisman Trophy winner. They got the number one picket quarterback in the NFL draft. Like, this dude isn’t just good. Like, he’s one of the all-time goods... I just think job’s not done.” (Pollack, 14:39)
[15:48] Rollins’ pick: Miami in an upset
Both expect a close, physical, classic finish—“All-timer game.”
“The only problem with my plan was Jim Kelly was living out my plan...” (Richt, 20:38)
“Now [with NIL]... those second teamers that are first rounders at a lot of these schools are like, you know what, I’m going to Indiana... I can not only play now, but I get paid now... That’s why you can see… an Indiana become #1.” (Richt, 38:05)
“I can’t go to Tennessee, I can’t go to Ole Miss, I can’t go to Miami… I just can’t do that.” (Pollack, 44:33—praises Simpson’s integrity)
Pat Fitzgerald at Michigan State: “This is a rebirth, not a rebuild.” (Pat Fitzgerald, 48:08)—the challenge for relational coaches in a transactional portal world.
Team Impact & Indiana’s “heart and soul” kid:
“It’s hard to see when forward progress is stopped and where the body is in there… you don’t really know what’s going on. So you’re right, I’m not for it. Honestly, I don’t like it that much. But if I, if they let me do it, I’m gonna do it.” (Pollack on pushing the pile, 12:00)
For more, tune in Monday for the national championship recap and potential bonus episodes!
