what up everybody? Welcome on in the sea Ball get ball. I'm not going to lie. It's getting harder and harder to like not get more excited about football. I think we got six weekends till football is back. SEC media days. Watched, watched a bunch of that today. Fell asleep to it too. Took a nap to it as well. But it was, it was fantastic. So we'll get to SEC media days a little bit, some quotes. We'll get to Boomer sooner because they are on the contender list in the sec. So is lsu. They are on their contender list. Who won the weekend like we do every weekend. But first, we're going to give a tip of the cap to Michigan. Y' all know this if you are cball get ball listeners. First of all, thank you very much. We absolutely are here for the Petty. We love the Petty. We love the, the shots at people. We love the rivalries. We love the game of football and the fact that Michigan released their ward manual. You know what they were deciding to do with him for the future. Right when Sankey was doing his press conference for the SEC media days. Absolute tip of the cap. Absolutely freaking love it. I absolutely love it. Dude, it's. That's, that was not an accident. Interesting to me with the war manual. Stuff is interesting because we know it was a she show what was going on in Michigan. A lot of craziness, a lot of nut stuff. We kind of wait a little bit and now he's still got a lot of. He's still gonna, he's gonna go away because of the conduct and because of what happened on this watch. But he's not gonna go away yet. He's not gonna go away till the end of the year. Which again, I always, I'm like, why? What, what do we do this for? Oh, we do this because there's more time left on his deal. The buyout comes down, you know, and plus they can kind of release to the public now. You know, they're handling it. This is their investigation. They found the issues, but they spent a shoot ton of money to. To get to this point. Obviously, it's not that that's a big deal for Michigan, but football season ramping up, you got some closure on that. But. But this just further emphasizes my point. I got a text today, and if y' all are Seaball Getball fans and you love football, this is everything you need to know about football. This is why we do what we do and why we love this show so much. I got a text from one of my buddies. He's a really good buddy. And this is what he said to me. He was like, hey, man, you. And everyone has forgotten who Auburn is. I was like, okay, care to elaborate? He was like, did the defense get worse? Question mark. Did our O get. Did get better or worse with a bunch of laughing emojis. Obviously the offense has to get better at Auburn, but six losses by 1:1 score games could have easily run three. We're easily a top 20 team in college football, ladies and gentlemen, exhibit A. Why college football is so great. Because guess what? The passion and the hope it is there for everybody, man. Indiana just won a national championship. You're a couple moves away from being great. You never know. And that's fantastic. And the cherry on the Sunday, Brent Rollins, the best part of my favorite part of his comment. Just. Just listen to this. Listen to this, Brent. Schedule lines up great for us. As an Auburn fan. I think we beat Florida and Tennessee and then we just got a split lsu, Bama, UGA and Ole Miss. So my buddy is so in belief of Auburn that. That we chalking up UF in Tennessee and then we'll get the split. Like that is this time of year to a T. Like that is the definition of college football. And fans, we believe and we want to believe and we the. The hype. It's just. It's amazing. It's the gift that just keeps on giving every year. Man, do I.

That's a good question because we've looked at five teams already, Jordan, and in order, they finished last year, Georgia. And we'll get to SEC media days here in a sec. Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, A and M and Texas. Today we're looking at Oklahoma and LSU and sort of diving deep into those two. Those are who we think are these sort of contenders for the SEC championship.

So my question since that was brought up, how many do you think can make the playoffs from the SEC? Because obviously we think these 17. Those seven teams can.

I think I see. I love. Here's what I love about this. When I start to do this, I put people in contender mode and then I put people in. He gonna ruin a mode. Like he going to get someone or someones. That's kind of how I think about it in my brain. Like Auburn's going to get someone or someones. They're. They're going to get some people this year. Like Hugh Freeze came on this podcast and what did he say? If I was a new coach, the piece of advice I'd give him, retain the young talent. That's really, really good. And then go supplement. He did that. He's done a good job. Like, he lost some guys to older guys that left and went. And going to start at Tennessee at quarter corner, going to start elsewhere at Cor. Like, bunch of guys that left. But Auburn can get some. Florida's got the best skill, wide receiver depth in the country. So if that offensive line just comes together a little bit, one of the best backs in the country. Good QB play. Like, if you ain't scared of Florida, they gonna get someone or someones. And with some raw. And listen, Tennessee deserves to be on that list. Tennessee has earned the right to be on that list. Listening to Josh Hypo today, man, like, is he the most charismatic guy? No, he's not. But like, he does. He has done an unbelievable job. Like he's done. But he's done in the last 20 years. Like, no one's done it better than him at Tennessee and he's definitely got them on an upward trajectory. What they do is win a lot of skill to like, by the way, offensive line is really good. Receivers coming back really good. The QB running back is good. Like defense is the question. Just like it is for Auburn. For me. Um, and then the wild card. The wild card ones for me. First of All Missouri is always good. Drinkowicz is always going to overperform. But the wild card is South Carolina because they got a lot coming back and they got a dude at qb. Like, they got a lot of experience on the offensive line. They got a pass rusher that can wreck a game on the other side. Like, South Carolina is in that mix. So the only ones that aren't in that mix are the other teams, which

I hate to be, but that would put you at 11, me at nine. That I think out of the 16 can make the playoffs, the two that I thought of were Auburn and Florida. Because can. Can Byron Brown be a superman and you can't lift them offensively? And they.

The answer is yes. He's proven that. Like, if you don't believe Byron Brown's good, you're. You've watched the wrong sport. Like, he's played against really, really good teams. I'm off Florida, and he still looked like a big, strong dude that can make people miss.

Yep. And then Florida was the other one where the offense becomes a thing that you just. You can't stop it. They're getting 35 plus a game. That kind of thing. I wrote, you know what's funny? Rook said, I wrote for Auburn, go two and two versus Ole Miss, lsu, UG and Bama.

Hey, you know. You know who gonna get somebody? Kentucky gonna get somebody. I'm on the Will Stein training. You know what? He talked about it today at SEC media days. He was like, why do you think Kentucky can win big moving forward? Because of me.

I figured you would like this one. John Mattier asked about reading defenses. He said, there's not really any time to think. If someone's open, just throw it to them.

It's an easy game, guys. Y' all talk about. Y' all talk about how. Y' all talk about how complicated this league is. Come on, man. You just throw it some. Eli Drink was. If you didn't hear his comments, he jumped in on the weaker Big Ten scheduling, the. The no AQ, you know, or Power 4, you know, teams and said, you know, if you don't play at a conference, teams that are tough, listen, I get it. That's the type of years. That's the. This is the type of season which it Is. But my favorite, because I'm the most petty person here and this is just what I do is Josh. Hyp. I appreciate you Hype. I certainly hope that our fans haven't cooled off. Whether it's grocery stores being fully stocked with mustard or sports store stores making sure that they got reinforcements on golf balls. I certainly hope Knoxville's ready for his arrival. Talking about the Lane Kiffin. Hey, Ole Miss ain't the only one that wants to see him. Knoxville still wants that smoke, too. Like, that's ex. I love that stuff.

And they're all just having fun at this point. They all. They all know that they can kind of, to me. Well, most of them. There's probably some where it's like 75% personal, 25% joking, but most of them are kind of joking.

But why, why can't. Why can't we do that, though? Like, why can't we laugh at ourselves? Why can't we make fun of ourselves? Why can't we take shots at people and still be friends? Like, I think it's funny. Like the skit that Kirby and them did with, with Spurrier and Summer all like, that was awesome. Like, I just love. Yeah, Crystal Ball was in there. Yes. I love when we can do that stuff, man, and we don't take ourselves, you know, too serious. But.

So the other comment that was relevant to the discussion we just had with the how many can make the playoffs? So Sankey says no one has created the weekly competition that exists in the Southeastern Conference. We believe we're the best conference in college football. It's the reason I only think nine of the 16 can make the playoff. Last year that number was 13 because I included Vandy and they almost made it.

Greg, it's the reason why you shouldn't have gone to nine. It's the reason you don't go to nine. Yeah, you're absolutely right. And now you just literally. Again, I'm going to do the math for you. Half the teams in this conference is going to have another loss now. And there's so many teams that can. By the way, Mississippi State's got a first round corner and a quarter quarterback that is dynamic as crap, electric.

Like that might have a game of all games kind of thing. 300 throwing, 200 rushing, kind of.

Listen, I get it with the SEC and they should say that and they're absolutely right. But the Big Ten right now is like, hold my beer, like, hold my Natty light because we got three wings in a row. You know, you can suck on those like, it's just. It's the way it is right now. Like, it doesn't really matter. And sec, by the way, I think they're. I want to say, like 1 and 7 or 2 and 7 in the playoffs in the, in the college football transfer portal era. Yeah, I mean, that. That's, that's not good. Like, again, I'm not a mathematician, but that's not good. And that something needs to change. All right, let's get to the Oklahoma centers. Quick recap. If you, if you forget about Boomer sooner, another team that we predicted to go to the playoff. And by we, me and me, I always say we, me and Brent predicted to go to the playoffs last year. They did record 10 and three a little ahead of schedule. Six and two in the SEC, which is outstanding. They were the eighth seed in the playoff. They lost in a rematch to Alabama. Remember, they went to Bryant Denny Stadium and one and then went. And then they played them obviously at home in Norman. Up 17 to nothing and blew the largest lead in college football history. We're not talking about that, but defense was absolutely insane. I think the biggest storyline about last year and the most prevalent thing coming into this season is was it Matier's injury or was it Matier's ability? And I thought, I respected his answers at SEC media day. He was like, dude, it was different. I had to learn how to throw the ball a little bit different. I'm a bit. If you watch John Mattier before that last season, a lot of people did not like, he has the goods. Like, he's got the it factor. He's. He's got as much horsepower as anybody in college football. That thing comes out with some zip on it. The defense absolutely carried the day. The defense was the biggest strength of the team. I don't really expect that to change. I really don't. Like between stone and wine, like one of the best defensive tackle punches up front. They got linebackers, they got secondary, they got it all. And they got Venables. Like the defense is the strength of the team. Mater and company. Do they get a little bit better? And as the season goes on, do they take steps and progress? To me, they do that. The ceiling is super, super high. But I'm counting on the defense. But. But remember, Mater missed one game and then he didn't miss another game because of his hand. So in fairness or credit to him for being tough, but he's got to get better with deep ball placement. They've got to get better taking shots. They've got to improve just offensively from an efficiency standpoint. And that's why they've brought in so many pieces. And I think there's a whole lot to like when you start talking about guys that they added. I think it's just kind of fun because again, what we were talking about earlier, but Parker Livingston, like, just kind of fun to be able to add a guy from Texas, Arch's roommate, somebody that knows him intimately, a guy that can come in and play at the. At 6 foot 3, had some production, had some big plays. Trail Harris from Virginia, he was, he was great. A year ago he was top 10 in receiving in the ACC. Like he did a good job. He's another pretty good big bodied guy. You bring in Cole Sullivan from Michigan. So Brent, you add a bunch of pieces, a bunch of guys up front or, excuse me, a bunch of guys out wide to go with a guy that was really good. Satania was the offense man. Like when you watch them play offense, you saw the limitations of Mater and you saw Satania being the best player on offense. It was that, it was that. It was that simple. To me watching them now, how many of these pieces around them can grow, can get better? Can the offensive line step up? Can this unit be a whole unit?

I actually feel pretty good about their offensive line, what they have coming back, given how much those guys played a year ago. It's the elevation piece with Mater that you talked about. And it's not just Mater, it's. It's Arbuckle, it's the both of them. And I think from a scheme and personnel standpoint, they took a humongous step in the right direction. We've kind of talked about this earlier in our offseason, but bringing in Jason Whitten as the tight end coach. Yeah. Bringing in the transfer guys that they brought in at tight end with Rocky Beers, Hayden Hansen and Van Dorsler from Tennessee, you like, that was not an element of their game. They were one of the Highest teams in three receiver, 11 personnel a year ago.

And I think that happened because of Wynton by the way, like when you got a guy like Whitten that played for the Cowboys for all those years, hall of Famer, like that does not hurt you like in the slightest bit. That's a great, that was a great hire.

Yeah, he's like. I think, I think he's a. One of a linebacker. Yeah, he's a linebacker, but big time recruit. I mean, but, but no, I think you're, I think you're Right about the tight end spot. Like because. And they didn't get one. They got a bunch. And they're kind of different too, which is cool.

You need to be able to run the football. And that's what. Because you could see that Arbuckle in his system was, hey, we have better athletes in the levels that he coached at previously. So we can do certain things or we can rely on a QB run game potentially that, you know, that just bails us out when it's sort of nut crunching time. He goes to that. Well, that's the other thing for me when looking at Mater is I do think he's the health. He's going to be better. Like the thumb and the off season and all that. Like he's going to be better from a throwing perspective. But that was something that we saw at Washington State that you basically didn't see Harley at all. What you know, for the most part last season was his running game. And can you either one, elevate your running back running game, part of it, the other parts of your offense or two, does he become. Because his yards per contact after attempt was like almost five at Washington State it cut in half. His missed tackles force more than half that better place yard runs, playing a

lot competition a lot of better players. Yes, yes. Hey, you know, you know one thing too. You know one of the things, and we've said this before, but I want to make sure everybody knows this. Like there's such a big difference between returning starters and starts and guys that are returning that are actually good. Okay. And again, we've talked about this specifically to Oklahoma's line. Brent talked about. He didn't talk about these guys from the standpoint of they weren't very good. Because they weren't. He talked. But there was two freshmen on that line. Yeah, there was two freshmen. Like, but when you watch guys that are inexperienced start to get experience and you watch ability, you're like, okay, I think they'll get better. It's not just because they started, it's because they have ability. And I think they'll get better. They've got to do a better job of running the football. There ain't no doubt about that. Like the defense in 2025 carried this team way too much. They had six points against Texas. They had 17 against Missouri, they had 17 against LSU.

Like 23 against one random play here and there too.

Yes. And by the way, Venables, and just think about this. And this is not an insult, it's the facts. Venables is Also one in three versus Texas and I think they've scored nine points in the past two years against them. So the defense is a clear cut. Do they have things to replace? Yeah, I'm not the least bit worried about them. Not the least bit worried.

No. And disruptors, like, I feel perfectly fine. It's just. Can the offense.

So take that expectations there. Do you think the Oklahoma fan base is looking at this like, hey, you're. You're building this. You're building this. You struggled, struggled, struggled. Now you got to that point where offense is taken care of. Jim Nagy's taking care of a lot of the things from a general manager perspective. I heard him talking with.

Andy Staples today about how they allowed him to focus Venables to focus on the defense and handled other pieces of it. Is the expectation now to get a playoff win because they're the unfortunate distinction of being the only team with or the team with the most playoff appearances and no doubt a playoff win.

And that's at least two. No, that's. That's. That was Lincoln Riley obviously getting there and then, you know, like, they didn't play defense. They never played defense ever. So kind of hard. But. But I do think that was a

getting there and winning is an expectation. Do you think that's the case?

I think I don't. I could be wrong. I could be wrong. But I feel like with that schedule, man, like you're talking about, you got to play at Michigan, you got to play at Georgia, you got to play basically Texas in a neutral site. You call that whatever you want. It's Dallas, you got to play South Carolina, you got to play at Florida, you got to play Ole Miss, you got to play A and M, you got to play at Missouri to end it. Like, it's not a. Not an easy path by any stretch of the imagination, especially down the stretch. But Michigan early, you know, Georgia would be the measuring stick game for them. I think, you know, that'd be a good one to see, like where they're at at this point. The trap game to me is Florida, the seventh. Right. When you're going to. At Florida right before you play Ole Miss and A and M and at Missouri down the strip like that. That at Florida is going to be one that you got to definitely look out for. But here's the thing, man. You should have confidence if you're an OU fan with Venables and who he is and what he is, we're going to see about the second year higher we're going to see about Mater. I think. I think people are going to. I think people are going to be reminded really quickly in this season how good John Mattier is. I think they're. I think they forgot weapons are going to be there. I think the run game improves. I think this team improves and I think this team's a pain in a lot of people's butts. And I think the ceiling is 11 and 1.

The ceiling is like 11, one SC championship game. That's the ceiling.

And for a national championship, like, that's the ceiling for this offense. Like they, for this team. Because there's a lot of teams that I can start to nitpick and say they don't have this. What does Oklahoma not have? Like, what do you. What's your. What's your. What's your worry, Brett? What's your anchor that you're going. This is going to pull them down and they can't do it like Mattier in the offense.

So Mater, as a consistent thrower, especially down the field, that's probably the one where I'd go to as a. Yeah, I don't know that there's.

But there's not a. But there's not an anchor. There's not a. I know Matier can throw the ball down the field and I know he's got a hose and he's got ability. So I think the floor to me. The floor to me is like eight wins, nine wins like that. To me for Oklahoma, that's because there's such a complete team. That's the. That's the floor for me.

I put seven and five just because I don't know. Michigan, you go to Michigan. That's not, it's not like that's a. That's not Gimme.

So if you start there and now, you know, you go to Georgia, now you're two and two. Like it just. Things can fall off a little bit, those kind of things. One, we've always talked about these first two years, how Texas kind of got the better end of the stick. I guess you could say from a schedule standpoint, this is the. Now, this after the fact, looking after the fact for year one, top. Top half of the conference, Oklahoma played five, Texas only played two. And this is excluding the game against each other last year it got a little closer 4 and 3. If you look at sort of standings from last year and projecting ahead to this year's schedule, they're equal. So they've kind of. With the way the schedules worked out this time, those two. So where their game becomes potentially a once team's 9 and 3, the other's

10 and 2 kind of in Texas has gotten the better of them. We've got a message from Rooks in the chat. Who's playing running back? Robinson will play running back. Xavier Robinson. Tory Blaylock will play running back. And then they had a. I don't ne.

I don't necessarily worry about the running backs. I worry about the scheme and how they do it. And that's, that's what I want to see. Game one from them is what does it look like with all those tight ends now? Because they just didn't have them at all last year.

And, and I get. I get. I'm not gonna lie up front. They've got to do a better job with their offensive line play and what they're doing, scheme wise and not asking them to be Superman up front, like give them some help, too. All right.

Let's get to the other Tigers. We started the show with the Auburn Tigers. Now getting to lsu. Listen, we'll get to. We'll get to that. Let's recap. First recap. 7 and 6, 3 and 5 in the SEC. Started 5 and 1 looking really, really good. A close loss to Ole Miss. Nobody's fault in that. Like, close loss to Ole Miss. And then couple games later, a couple more losses. A beat down by A and M. Brian Kelly's fired. They give him $54 million to. To go the heck away. Lane Kiffin saga begins. And then all that stuff swirls and swirls and swirls. And then we get him for seven years, $91 million, complete dedication to the roster. Again, we had some weirdness, like with the. Brian Kelly, the governor, all the stuff that went on. There was some weirdness. But LSU was so desperate to get back into this national championship picture. Desperate to be LSU again and have one of these great seasons that they typically tend to have every, you know, five to eight years or whatever. Bring in Lane Kiffin. Lane Kiffin. Bringing in Charlie Weiss Jr. On the offensive side, which is awesome because why it's a proven system. I'm not guessing. I'm not. I'm not. I don't have to. I don't have to guess. This is absolutely going to be a good offense, a good system. What do you need if you're going to have a good system? You better bring in a trigger man. Sam Levitt fits really well, experienced in a spread system and has some freaking cojones and some savvy about him, right? Like he's not scared of the moment by any stretch of the imagination. Consistency needs to get better. But 4,600 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, almost a thousand rushing 16 and 4. Is a starter at Arizona State. So they got their guy. He was limited during spring, by the way, little foot injury, but 43 transfers on this, on this class, the number one portal class. Lane Kiffin is the portal king. He's done this. It's not like, hey, can he build this? Can he bring these guys together? He's done it ad nauseam. He's done it time and time again. He would rather do it this way. But he found his, found his starting qb, rebuilt his offensive line, completely rebuilt the receiver room, added proven pass rusher from his old spot, Imani Ellen strengthen the linebacker core and reconstructed the secondary like bang bang choo choo train. Brent, we got, we got 43 new players and we're off and ready to, ready to rock and roll. And I think LSU to me, to me. LSU is not in. Hey, let's put this feeler out. LSU is not in. Hey, like we really want to improve and get better. Hell, now LSU is in it for one reason. To win a national championship like LSU did. Not spend all these zeros and all these millions and have this roster and bring in Lane Kiffin to be a team that contends the team that goes to the playoff. They're trying to win this puppy right now, this year.

I think the number one glaring spot for them was offensive line because all of their guys left and went away and so they got very desperate and they had to pay Jordan Seaton a heck shoot ton of money. They had to pay a left tackle fee and they had to go get him. But they went and got him and. But I think that he's a guy that first of all he's a top 10 pick in the NFL. There ain't no doubt about that. I'm just telling you, he's got that kind of ability at his size and his athletic ability is absolutely stupid. He allowed one sack in 20, 25, five pressures like now listen, don't get me started on his run blocking because I'm, I'm going to tell you right now, I'm not a fan. I'm just not a fan, okay? I, I just. That kind of ability should show me a lot more and hopefully they get more from him in that aspect. But, but Jordan Seaton has to command the left side, stay healthy and protect his QB at an insane level because that, that's what the investment is.

So I realized that investment in the quality of player that you're getting. I went the other side just because when is Lane Kiffin really had elite offensive linemen and it mattered.

Peyton and Pyburn, they had one big game against South Carolina. The two of them combined outside and a lot of people did too. But outside of that there was a whole lot of meh. So having that sort of number one pass rusher to me was the biggest addition.

And he was almost a double digit sack guy. Like he was right, he was right on the edge. I think he was at nine sacks.

And that was my take home rewatching the Texas Tech game was that his skill set is going like, Lane's going to probably be able to do some things that he actually has not been able to do. Almost like when McVeigh went from golf to Stafford and you're like, ooh, I can do this with this toy and this guy's arm strength. There's going to be some things even maybe that he didn't necessarily do with dart that he's going to be able to do with Levitt because of the arm strength and the sort of playmaking ability that he has. Like the throw he had, he had to throw going one way, throwing back right against Texas Tech, 50 yards down the field, just one of those pro days type throws. That was ridiculous.
