Welcome to Quick Serve. Brought to you by ServiceNow all of the recaps. Exciting day of tennis again. Baratini gets through all of a sudden a quarter finalist again like shot out of a cannon. Let's try, let's try this whole comeback thing. Let's see if we can't get to rankings previously held. Well done from Baratini. Not easy. Had an absolute brawl I guess. Props to Serendolo also. I mean I don't even know how like they're walking, much less playing but props to Baratini. We are currently as we're shooting this, bring this microphone a little closer. We are currently watching Francis Tiafo try to close out Arnoldi. He is currently up four two in the in the fourth set, up two sets to one. We decided we were going to go on air when he is up two breaks. Now he's up one break. So we're going to white knuckle this thing home and see if, if big folk can't get through this one. Again. Two guys that are coming off of five setters. Like first two matches we've covered both of them all. Four guys coming off of just brutal
Mike
matches coming in, not coming off of 5 setter. I'd be more shocked at this point.
Sean
Yeah, seriously, none of them are subscribing to your don't get up two sets situation. Just. Just don't do it. So we were. I wanted to come on because I thought it was pretty funny the other day. Maybe it was just only funny to us, but as we were doing a show in the middle of Francis match is when he got in a fight with the other dude and he. Yeah, he told him he wasn't hard. Yeah, you're not hard, bro.
Mike
You're not hard, bro.
Sean
So good. And the guy kind of. Yeah, so I, I said about. I said, for instance, text. I said I was dying on air when you said that. And his response made me laugh so hard. He goes, listen, it was heat of the moment. It had to be done, bro. I thought it was so funny.
Mike
Big foe, dude.
Sean
FAA gets through against Tabilo looked pretty good. Caboli got through against Vita Zvaida is a great, great, great story this tournament. Loved, loved seeing his success. Someone I will, I will cheer for in the future. Kaboli was way up in that, that four set. And Schweid. I made it interesting. Seven, six in the fourth. First time Caboli's been tested this tournament. As a lot of our listeners wrote in the comments when I was covering the other half of the draw, very specifically, Caboli hasn't spent any time on. On court either. Yeah, I got it. We were talking about the other half. Chill out. He's looked great. Big, nasty. He's setting up that combo on the outside. A big nasty kick, putting people in the front row and then having a first look at that forehand be a little bit different. He will have less time against FAA than he has against someone like Zvaida. FAA will be able to rush him a little bit more. Let's see what else we got here. That's kind of it. And then on the women's side, Sabalenka takes out Osaka, Kalinskaya takes out Potipova. That, that match, you could tell one of the storylines when there's a lot of carnage with the top players in a tournament. Kalinskaya, Potipova, you could see they were both pretty nervous in that match, and it got a little scrappy at times. You could tell they were both kind of wanting this moment. Ended up in a. In a. In a breaker. I think it was 10, 7. Kalinskaya just pulled it out. So good work, good work there. I thought Sabalenka looked. Looked really good. When Sabalinga matches up with Naomi, it's Similar game comps, right? They both are trying to get on the front foot, they're both trying to inflict pain on each other. They basically turned this into a hardcore match. Sabalenka, it just feels like she has a little more nuance in her game now. Went to the drop shot a couple of times, moves maybe just a touch better, serves a little bit more consistently. I have to imagine that's one of the tougher matchups for Osaka because what she does well is received and then she kind of gets a taste of her own medicine with pace put back on her. So Sabalenka again, this was a prime time match, first time she's kind of had the spotlight on her in, in this tournament. I, I think there's been so much other news going on. She's gone along as quietly as world number one can an event when she is, she is the favorite. So Menshik Fonseca, listen, they're both again, they're both coming off of massive five set wins. Their bodies are both likely to be dragging. Fon man, I mean Menchik's gonna have to serve great to win, to win this match. Fona man, I consider me converted. You know, going in I'm like, I see the flashes of talent we've talked about on this show before, why everyone is so excited about him. It's the upside, right? It's what we've seen this tournament. No one can just kind of, not a lot of people on earth can just hit a 115 winner on a forehand side at will, you know, without needing much time to set up. That is an elite talent. Now he's combining it with mixing up paces, finding different ball flights, stepping in on some returns, stepping back on some returns. Listen, his, his servy finished the match against Novak kid up the register. 137, 138. Thinking his way through matches, you know, he talked about the process of points and not trying to win matches. Yes, every point, 25 seconds in between, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat. And then all of a sudden you've won a couple of five setters in a four setter. Five hours later when you, when you
Mike
look at their head to head, you know, on the Roland Garris website you can see their stats and how they've been playing so far through, you know, their first four matches. And really a lot of it is very similar with what they're doing. It's very similar. You know, average speeds across the board, but one number that really jumps out to Me is, you know, Fonseca's, I think, been in some bigger matches in terms of the pressure set and the length. They're about the same. They're about an hour difference. Fonseca has been on for about an hour longer. But Fonseca's unforced errors at about 156 men. Sheik is up at 224. I feel like, I mean, when you see a stat line like that, you know, what does that say to you about each of the guys coming in and about what type of matchup they need to play to win? Yes.
Sean
75 more errors in through four matches is. Is significant. The. The. The. And listen, I. Andre Rublev is, Is. Is fantastic. But going through Novak on. On Philip Chatrier, Novak is like, he's. He's the guy. I mean, he. He causes heirs for sport, right? Like, he. He is a guy. And, and same with Casper, that. That ball flight where he gets it up and away. I mean, it's begging for. For unforced errors. And I mean, the, the extended. I've seen more of fun Seka, I think, like the rest of earth through these matches. So, you know, Menchik missing that much more is significant. I think that's. I think that's a decent status. Is that our stat of the day, or do you have another one that
Mike
could be our stat of the day? Sure.
Sean
Brought to you by Sarah.
Mike
I like that. But actually, our stat of the day, which we didn't really go in on, it was, oh, my God, I'm not gonna be able to say her name. Just said it. Cholinska.
Sean
Cholinska versus Diane Perry got through.
Mike
Yes. And she becomes the seventh woman this century to go from qualifier to quarterfinalist at Roland Garros. With the last one being. Who'd you say it was?
Sean
Sean podoroska.
Mike
Podoroska. In 2020 when she made the semis. Yeah. So I props to her. That's our, in my opinion, the service now stat of the day with this great run.
Sean
The other one, Diana Schneider beats Matty Keys 60 in the third. I was not expecting that. It felt like when Maddie gets into a tournament, you know, that that's not going to be the scoreline that she's going to want to leave. Leave Paris with. But Fonseca, man, like, I don't know, you know, it's gonna be interesting to see going from like Novak to playing Casper to now. People probably expect him to win this match. You know, how does that pressure set sit? It's a very different One than going against the Goat and then going against a guy who's made the finals of this tournament twice and just made the finals of Rome and where you're probably still maybe not the favorite. That'll be interesting. What do you guys. What are we thinking?
Mike
I'm really pumped for Hodar Zvere tomorrow. I mean, I. I don't know. I. I just. There's something about, like, being young and not having that pressure set versus everyone is placing so much on Zverev shoulders right now. It's. I'm excited to see it.
Sean
I'm curious to see how Hodar because obviously, we've seen a lot of them recently. I'm curious to see how he returns an absolute bomb consistently, right? He takes bigger cuts and he's able to inflict pain on serves, but Zver serve is a different animal. You know, we talked about Francis being able to go stick save and then kind of play D after that. Roger was so good at it. Murray was so good at it. Does Hodar have that gear or does he need to take full swings on returns? I think we're going to see something new. I also think it's going to be easier for Zverev. He's going to know this guy's in form. His respect is already probably, you know, out of 10 for Hodar and what he can bring to the table. I just think Zverev is going to win a lot more points off of his serve freebies than Hodar is. Hodar is tall, and his serve, from what I can see so far, goes kind of straight. Like, he hits it out wide, but it doesn't turn right. I do think Zverev is going to be able to kind of firm up the return on Hodar serve once they get neutral. As far as creating speed, man, Hodar can hit through it. Like, I'm curious to see where he goes early. Does he challenge the back end or does he go straight to forehand and hope that, you know, Zverev goes roller derby and he can get two feet under him? It's hard to pick against Verav. I think he's going to be maybe not as protective as he was against DeJong. Like, he came out nervous knowing that he could kind of get through. I think he knows he's going to have to play well to beat the upstart. Sometimes that frees you up. Sometimes that frees you up a little bit. I like Sabalenko over Schneider. I should not even like, if people. If I choose people, they should just, like, quit. Svitolina Kostyuk. I can't even, like, weigh in because I'm. I'm just such big fans of. Of. Of both of them. And Draven, Christella, like, this is. This is a good one.
Mike
This.
Sean
Chris, stay, like, leveling up in her last year. I mean, she is thumping people. She won a match. Oh, and. Oh, she won a match three. And. Oh, she's thumping people. Like, I don't. I don't know. Like, I had. You had to choose Andreva, but I've been in this spot a million times in this tournament where it's like, okay, let's be sober. Let's think this through. It's obviously going to be Andreva, but fuck, I don't know anyone. Anyone going Kirstea?
Mike
No, not in my. Not in my draw. But I mean, she's been thumping people too. Andreva has to.
Sean
I know.
Mike
I like the matchup. I'm excited for it. And again, I think it kind of is the same application, but on the inverse. Right? We were saying Zverev might have the pressure on him because of the expectation where Hodar is, like, young and up and coming. It's almost the inverse where Kristea's, you know, out the door, as she's said, she's retiring. Like, the fuck it meter's gonna be zero.
Sean
Yeah, fuck that. The fuck it meter's on empty. Like, she doesn't give a shit.
Mike
And Andreva is the rise. Right? So it's almost the inverse.
Sean
I don't know. But, like, I don't know.
Mike
Let's. Let's.
Sean
We're kind of going all ways, though. But, like, when you're in the quarters of a major, like, the fuck it meter has to register a little bit. Like, if you're in the semis of a major, does this. Does the fuck it meter make a comeback with Cristea or is it. No fucks given still. Sorry, there's no chance. There's no. Every listening with a child is now turned off the. I apologize. Excuse me. Sorry. Bleeps.
Mike
We should do bleeps, Sean. Bleeps are funny. We're at 4040 right now.
Sean
Otherwise known as Deuce. Producer Mike They.
Mike
I know they've been at Deuce a lot. They. They were deuce in the. In the second set for a long time, too.
Sean
I might have to get off and watch this. I think we have to get off. Like, should we.
Mike
Should we go to break real quick and then we'll come back?
Sean
I don't know. Does that. I mean, we're going to Come back for like 30 seconds and just say, Francis 1, what are we going to do? The show's pretty much over. Mike.
Mike
Yeah, I know. One thing I wanted to ask you about real quick before we do get off. Was Fabrice Santoro asking Sabalenka to moonwalk?
Sean
I don't know, man.
Mike
Like, I mean, I just, for me personally, like, I just, I get, I get the personality side of these post match interviews, you know, and I'm sure you've. You were asked to do some crazy stuff, but, like, it's just, it's just a lose, lose. But it was like props to her for doing it. I just thought it was weird. I don't need any more. I just think that's such a weird thing to ask somebody to do.
Sean
I don't know.
Mike
Unprofessional setting.
Sean
I get weird. I like, I always got along with Febreze Santoro. He was like, not a lot of the veterans when you come out are like super nice. He was always great. I like Fabrice Santoro and like, saying, will you dance for us? Is like such a weird thing to ask. Like, I don't like it. And then when she does it a little bit and it's kind of over and then being like, moonwalk, I'm like, fuck. I don't know. Maybe people loved it. I might be in the minority. I just get like, I didn't. There was one. There was one. I forget how I'll get it wrong. It was at the Aussie Open. It wasn't Courier, because he would never. But it was. They were like, can they ask some female, like, can you, can you twirl for us? I'm like, what the, what the fuck are we doing? Like, what are we doing? I don't know. Maybe some people like it. I could be wrong. I'm fully open to that being a possibility. And when it's like, dance for us. I'm like, but to your point, if Sabalenka is like, no, thank you, then everyone's like, well, you can't play along. Like, it's no fun. Like, it's a lose, lose situation. You're either kind of like corny. I don't know, maybe I'm just putting myself in that position and realizing how uncomfortable I would be if someone's like, dance for me.
Mike
I just, I just think you have limited time with the greats, you know, and this is the content you ask for when, you know, I prefer something a little bit more depth.
Sean
Five. Five. All with Francis.
Mike
Yeah.
Sean
Double break. Oh, this is Rough. Okay. I, I think I have to end the show and go watch this. So what you just watched up until now was shot like hours ago at this point, and we did a whole show and now we have. It's Francis lost in five. And it was, it was. That was tough. This, this tournament's just been insane. I feel for Francis right now. And he was up a double break in the fourth. So let's leave that aside right now. We'll have plenty of time to talk about, you know, how to close in the future and all that. One. Props to Arnoldi. Right? Very easy to pack it in considering, you know, the length of matches he had played before that. He plays with this kind of boyish levity the whole time, which is very attractive as a viewer. You know, it feels like the pressures of the tennis world haven't gotten to him yet. Like, he always is like, has this like, ready smile and it's hard because you, you're like, respect both people. Obviously I have more of a relationship with, with Francis than I do. I don't know, Arnaldi. You know, the respect knows no bounds. And it's just. Tennis is hard. It's just hard. And this tournament has just been such a. And showcase of physicality. I remember last year we did a show after the Center Alcaraz match and I said something which I never know what goes viral because I'm not on it, but when I start getting texts from people who don't follow tennis, I know that our show, like, went nutty. And I said, I think it's the hardest sport in the world. And, you know, to watch that tonight, isolated for five and a half hours, on the heels of being isolated two days ago, for five and a half hours, on the heels of being isolated for four days and a half hours, you know, all in a five day span. The ebbs and flows during that time. You can't pass the ball, you know, Francis can't throw it into Shaq to post up, to close the game out. Like, you got to do every part of this game yourself, and it's just really hard. And I hate it for Francis. He probably won't be ready to hear anything positive from this for a while. It hopefully has a limited hangover. Also, if I had to say anything, I'd say, let's try to see the trees through the forest a little bit. Because you didn't have this physicality in your body a year ago. You didn't have the ability to lose in five and a half hours because you were losing in four hours and 40 minutes. All you can do is kind of prepare yourself for the opportunity. You were prepared for the opportunity physically. Now game and how to close and all those conversations, they're going to be warranted at this point, but hell of an effort from Arnoldi man. And in the Italians at large, like, you know, the first time three Italian men have ever been in the quarters of a grand slam with Caboli and Baratini and without sinner. So I like, how do you. I don't know how you write that, you know, at the beginning of a tournament, the first time ever, and you take out the greatest player by far in Italian history. Props to them. I feel for foe. This game is going to give you like these moments as a fan of like ecstasy. And then you get stuck in those matches where you know your heart's going to break various amounts for whoever doesn't win that match. And that, that stinks. We've seen a lot of that this Roland Garros, but it also makes you respect, respect the struggle a little bit more. We're lucky to watch these guys. I don't know how everyone on earth can play five and a half hours now. It's. It's mind boggling. I only did a, you know, a couple times over five and I felt like my, my body felt like it wanted to leave itself at the end of it. So mad respect. Obviously. Massive opportunity miss for foe, but opportunity knocking for Arnaldi. Mike, it's nice of you to join us from your birthday. Hello.
Mike
I mean, holy cow.
Sean
Yeah, I just. Well, we're gonna close the show. You just slid into the last six seconds of the show. So happy birthday. Thanks for coming up. But we just. It was an awkward moment too because I was getting really in my feelings.
Mike
I'm really sorry I said I would drop in. Nobody told me to suck off.
Sean
Hold on, let me, let me text you.
Mike
Hold on.
Sean
Just stay on for one second. Hold on.
Mike
Served.
