Sean
Guys, here it is.
Mike
I spent. I had to keep it between 10 and 2 today.
Sean
Yeah, you had a real job today.
Mike
It's good to be back in the Wild west.
Sean
I know, man.
Mike
It was employed. So can I tell you a story? So I started. For those of you I did my first day at espn. I haven't done like a, like proper. I don't want to insult anyone in this room. I haven't done a proper broadcasting job.
Sean
Okay, me neither.
Mike
Okay, good. Just as we're all in agreement, so get there today. First day at Wimbledon.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
Stories, stories, stories. So much. So much research.
Sean
So much. Just research everywhere.
Mike
If they saw this as writing up a show, like I'm embarrassed for us. We do, we do.
Sean
On the. We do have research on the back
Mike
end to correct our mistakes just to
Sean
make sure we're not saying anything correctly.
Mike
Okay. So they're like. They were going over like pronunciation guns. I'm like, we just kind of play the sound effect from the. He's like, how do you do it? I'm like, we hold it up to the mic, and it goes.
Sean
I mean, why. Why do it ourselves when somebody else will do it for us?
Mike
The answer is because we can't afford to do it.
Sean
Fair enough. Thanks.
Mike
So get there. I feel like it's my first day of school. You know, I'm walking into someone else's thing. They've been the voice of tennis for, you know, decades now, right? And don't know what to expect. There hasn't been. I mean, really? We're like, dude, we're dinging because we're just trying to prove the point that I just made.
Sean
Sorry for sake.
Mike
So. So I'm. So I get there. I'm doing it, and I'm like, okay, we got five minutes till we're live, right? And we open, and it's Johnny Mack and Reese Davis, who, by the way, is, like, the best.
Sean
He's awesome.
Mike
Oh, my Lord, what a. What a legend. So. So I'm going to the bathroom. You know, you have to unzip the thing, and so I. I do it, and three buttons fly off. Three buttons off my pants.
Sean
How buttons are on your pants?
Mike
Three? Yeah. So it's wide open.
Sean
So it's already not a good fit.
Mike
It's a bad fit. I'm going. I'm walking down the hallway, trying to cover. I'm like, oh, my God.
Sean
We're.
Mike
We're in their campus. I'm like, I hope I don't have to.
Sean
Hey, you had no zipper. Just all buttons.
Mike
Buttons.
Sean
These must have been classy pants.
Mike
They were.
Sean
You are in London.
Mike
They were classy pants. Now they're. There's a. Just a hole. So I'm like, oh, God. It's like. I'm like, I have to go. So I kind of, like, just mosey on down. And I just sat. And they didn't know. I sat underneath the desk and didn't get up for, like, an hour and a half.
Sean
You're like, man, this guy really loves this new job.
Mike
So I texted Brooke, who was here, and then I texted the driver for espn. I was like, can you go pick up pants for my wife? And so I had to send in a replacement set of pants.
Sean
Oh, you didn't even get. You didn't even give them, like, the signal, like, hey, I need help. You just sat at the desk.
Mike
I sat at the desk. I just sat. Like, I could. I tried to do it with, like, paperclips, but it was, like. It was a disaster. It's like, how do you fix that? Like, in paperclip? Every time you move, it comes off like it was. It was not great. I was like, I miss my sweats.
Sean
Well, luckily, luckily, the home you found on airbnb was right next door to the place.
Mike
Great subtle segue. This studio is built inside the home we found on Airbnb.
Sean
It's incredible.
Mike
It's great.
Sean
I know. We're like. You said that I couldn't stay with you, and you said Sean definitely couldn't stay with you.
Mike
No, that's not true.
Sean
Yeah, it's okay. It's okay. So we found a place on Airbnb that's five minutes down the hill. We've gone to Rushmore, which is, like, right by where we're staying. It is one of the best burgers I've ever had in my entire life.
Mike
Yeah.
Sean
We get the village, like, right around the corner. And your pants are like, 10 minutes.
Mike
And I can wear shorts. And they can save me because it's so close to the venue. If your pants. If the buttons pop off of your pants right before you go live.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
Leaving an extremely exposed areas.
Sean
These are not the.
Mike
I do want to. I do want to talk about. I want to correct something. Okay. I just want to correct something. I didn't say that you guys couldn't stay here. It was just when I knew that you didn't have a place to say. I didn't offer.
Sean
Is that accurate. Shot off. Gary, can we just talk about some tennis? I'm sorry.
Mike
Can we. Can I enjoy the home we found on Airbnb with my kids and my wife, like, without you?
Sean
I mean, it is pretty great.
Mike
Douche. Knock it out. All right. And there was some tennis. I'm sure that. Thank you for staying with us for the. The life and times of our life in the Wimbledon village.
Sean
I'm glad you and turned out to
Mike
be a good fit, you guys. Nice one. Nice. You guys just been, like, villaging your asses off, bro. This a meeting here. A little thing there, like, just kind
Sean
of going by the IMG house. Max had us over. It was incredible.
Mike
Did.
Sean
He was lovely.
Mike
Oh, did he? Look at us.
Sean
Yeah, you were busy working. We were busy.
Mike
Look at us. You guys are just smashing burgers and free food from the. I. You know, you go there just for free food.
Sean
We built this studio, okay? It took us all of three hours.
Mike
That is true. I can't argue that it did. And that's exactly what happened.
Sean
No down to the queue. We met some wonderful people.
Mike
That was cool, by the way.
Sean
The queue's awesome.
Mike
Yeah, the queue For. For those of you watching at home, and you're like, what's it? It's a line.
Sean
Basically everywhere's a Q at Wimbledon, apparently. But this is the Q, and you
Mike
spell it with a lot of unnecessary vowels. Q, E. Yeah. Anyways, you guys are crushing it. I'm trying to keep my pants up on espn. I just sat. I had to go to the bathroom for, like, 45 minutes, and I was just like, I can't. So then all of a sudden, that's like, WhatsApp. And sweet, sweet ladies were like, your pants are here. I'm like, oh, okay. So I just shimmied along, like, awkwardly. It was bad. There was tennis.
Sean
Yes.
Mike
By the way, sinner's gonna lead the day, obviously surviving. Like, we'll. We'll. We'll talk about that. Medi cruise through silic 1, 2, and 4. Michael Zhang beat Nori.
Sean
That was awesome.
Mike
Nori knows how to play on the surface. He's been in the semis here before. That's a big win in a. In a. In a slam. Seven, six in the fifth. Really impressed. Like, when was the last time you graduated from Columbia and Or won a match at Wimbledon, Mike?
Sean
I've never done any of those things or thought of them.
Mike
I've done one. It wasn't Columbia, I'll tell you. Anyways, he played fantastic Hodar, So Hodar was interesting. He played Gil, who was a wild card. So we still need to stress test this a little bit more. I think it was ranked 222 coming in. It's so weird when someone breaks out like a Hodar did during the clay court season and goes from 500 to, you know, 23 in the world in, like, a sneeze. Never played a match on grass, so it's like we're trying to just predict how he's going.
Sean
He'd never played a professional match.
Mike
Well, I mean, no. Like, I don't. I don't. I don't think. Or a tour match. Maybe there's someone else, but, like, definitely not a one at Wimbledon. Look, good shot. Tolerance is good. Serve was good. I want to see him get beat up to the corners a little bit to see if the movement is there a little bit more. They. I don't think the guy today had pace of shot to test him, but I was watching, and the eye test was. Was positive. I. I thought. I thought it was a really good performance for him. The up. The upset that I don't think was an upset except for you. And remind the. Everyone what you did. With your draw. Because this is an example of it being horrible.
Sean
It was going really well until it didn't. But essentially I.
Mike
It's day one. What do you mean?
Sean
I picked based on head to head and then if. If there wasn't a head to head, then I picked based on. On ranking.
Mike
Okay.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
Hercock speaks.
Sean
Casper Rood.
Mike
Yep. That was a horrible pick by you.
Sean
Horrible pick. So I knew it was going to be. Because you're very committed about it being one.
Mike
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because that works out. Hashtag Roland Garros bracket.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
Tommy Paul is in this in Betty section. Like to get to the quarters.
Sean
He looks great. We watched him for a little while from the media thing.
Mike
Yeah, Mueller just didn't want to be on grass. Like he didn't want to. There was. He broke from the first game, didn't face a break point. Like he. I almost feel like he's going to start a second round. Be like this is the start of the tournament a little bit. But he just knows how to play on the surface. Fonseca beating Batista. Good. Batista goo. Made the semis here once like as one title. Won a title on grass. Like knows how to play. Plays the trajectory down, hits the ball flat low little stress test in the first set. Winning in a breaker. Good win. Like a good solid win over a veteran who actually knows how to. To play on this surface. So at ESPN, I sit with my back towards court 18, so I don't always see what's behind me. And we're, you know, in this huge board of just. It's like a dream watching situation. It's unbelievable.
Sean
It's like screens everywhere.
Mike
Like I can be like step me and it's like.
Sean
It's like a. Sorry.
Mike
It's like a buffet of information.
Sean
Womp, womp.
Mike
Yeah. So anyways, I'm sitting in my back, I hear. I'm like. It was like jarring. And then I look, I look over my right shoulder and it's just a sea of Brazilians up on.
Sean
We could hear them. We were like on the other side of the media. Like the. The media like area for all the different groups sits above that court. Yeah, like right above where you guys are. And they were just cheering Fonseca.
Mike
It was amazing.
Sean
And you're like, oh my. This the energy that they're going to bring. I remember last year, the first time I came here, you had given us tickets and we were in center court. I remember he was playing like all the way out on the edge and you could hear them CHEERING and it's only going to be bigger. And if he plays the way he did today, it's going to be for a long time.
Mike
There's still going to be like, Batista Goode is great, understands ball flight, but doesn't have, like, the knockout punch. Right. If he was going to have to get in and claw his way into this thing, just. And Fonsega is the opposite. Like, he has knockout power all over the place, but, like, it was a very disciplined, straightforward, like, it was a mature match.
Sean
It's funny, you said Sean pointed that out when he was like, oh, he just, like, he would serve and we're like, man, look how patient he is. He's just walking over, he's getting the towel.
Mike
Yeah.
Sean
I mean, he's like, this is my match to play, not a match with somebody else. It was interesting to watch.
Mike
And I don't want to discount the effect of week one of Roland Garros there.
Sean
Okay.
Mike
Big time tennis. Three out of five sets. Pacing yourself. How do you feel when your four matches in all of those things, as it, like, the input comes in and he understands how it feels and it's. It's going to get calmer. I think for him. Not as frantic, not, you know, expectation through the roof. I think the more he does it, obviously, the more comfortable he's going to get with it. But I thought it was a. I thought it was a great performance. Some of the highlights on the women's side. Coco Golf rolled. It was a good performance for her. This is, you know, I like that she's honest. She went to the press grammar. She goes, my relationship with grass isn't. Isn't the best, but she looked good today. Sabalenka just rolled. Ostapenko wins. Andreeva, Pugula, Jovic. Eva Jovic looked. Looked good.
Sean
She looked great in the second, not
Mike
an easy first round. Osaka looked pretty good.
Sean
Yeah, her fit was crazy.
Mike
The fit is insane. But, like, it's. It's fun, it's great. It gives you a reason to watch, like the entrance. But she put this thing on the chair and, like, laid it across.
Sean
All right. I was reading about this. You tell me about it.
Mike
I didn't see it. So she walks in, in the Osaka thing, and if you've watched the coverage of the French, it's like a new version of the long, dramatic entrance. Cool, fun. Like, we're great, we talk about it. No one's heard. If you're offended by it, then, like, get over it. It's fun, right? Like, it's like, what are we doing? So. But she lays it on the chair and it's like sitting up. And then she would. I think she was planning on sitting in the chair next to it. And the. The umpire got out and was like, we have to move this off the court. I don't know if it's viewed as like an advertisement or like it's laid out.
Sean
So she laid out like, like standing up.
Mike
Like, it was pretty.
Sean
I mean, because it's pretty big.
Mike
It's not small. It was 15ft high.
Sean
People. The ladies in the front row were like down in front.
Mike
Yeah. There were four people holding the back of it. I don't know. It's like a wedding person. So anyway, so she had to move it off the court. Like, imagine wearing something on. Like, we have to move your outer gown. Like, how do you even say that without it?
Sean
Your tearaway pants. We have to move your tear away pants. They weren't terrible.
Mike
You would not tear this work of art. Like, that's. I don't. I don't even know. I don't even know.
Sean
Also, your sweatsuit's causing too much.
Mike
Also it takes a while to like enter and then get off. Like, does that go into the warmup time?
Sean
That's a good question. Right, Sean? We should go next time. We should see when they start the clock.
Mike
Yeah.
Sean
I'm curious when they start the.
Mike
Yeah, it's four matches behind you.
Sean
That's. I'm going to go check that out. Cuz the entrance is elite.
Mike
Not going to lie. Great. And I don't want anything to mess with it. And if I was playing her, I'd be like, she starts serving and be like, go time. You tapping on your wrist right now, like, let's go. That's it. Kova wins. Swancow beats Kalinska in the easiest pronunciation match of the day.
Sean
Obviously the qualifier baton passing. But I mean, she was. Maya was on the way to winning that match.
Mike
6253 rolled her ankle.
Sean
Bummer.
Mike
I. I will say, like, qualifier wins three rounds. Like, she was in that position a month ago. Knows that. That's momentum, that's value. It has it and we talk about it all the time during the draw shows. I will say it was. I sat back and I was like kind of smiling. Like, it wasn't a smirk. It was like a very happy Smileska's outfit. Sponsored the manufacturer is the same all the way down to the shoes. Patches everywhere.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
Now for her injuries and her days of struggle, she gets paid 100 grand.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
So fantastic.
Sean
Fantastic.
Mike
Like her new reality is, is.
Sean
I know.
Mike
It's fantastic.
Sean
Megan was writing that she. Her game looked great on the grass, though, so I feel I'm a little disappointed that we don't get to see.
Mike
Yeah.
Sean
I mean, if it was going to hold up on the ground, it does.
Mike
One thing that you need to watch for for grass court tennis, and I don't know that we saw that today with Kvalinska to get an accurate reading was when someone can beat you hard through the middle consistently and or push you to the corners, like with pace.
Sean
Okay.
Mike
Right. Shot tolerance is a big deal. When someone can't create that amount of speed, I don't know that it's an accurate read. So she looked fine. I think as you go through the tournament and it's like Sabalenka and that pace of shot is coming through. I think she might have struggled a little bit, but we won't know till next year. And if you told her two months ago, you're gonna final one of the next two slams, are you in?
Sean
I mean, she's like, dial me up.
Mike
Correct.
Sean
Dial me up.
Mike
So very cool. Even. Even on a bad day. The earn out in a million different ways for her is well earned and makes me happy. What else you got?
Sean
I think that's it. I think that's. That's all I really got. I think the biggest thing would be asking you about Yonic center.
Mike
Yeah. So did the entire match. And we did a. A, a breakdown kind of in match one. Career high in aces for Yanic. He had 30.
Sean
31.
Mike
31. Okay. So I was wrong on that live on TV. Anyways, moving on.
Sean
Foley had a good stat department.
Mike
Yeah, no, they have their elite stat department. I'm just kidding, obviously, about it.
Sean
There's 50 million of them.
Mike
F. There's a lot of them. And they're fantastic.
Sean
And they're lovely.
Mike
Gr. Fantastic 51 errors. He was missing a lot of like. And his misses weren't by three inches. They were by like four or five feet.
Sean
I heard you say that on the broadcast. I was curious, like, what was it consistently, like, depending on where he was going, or was it one thing he was struggling with?
Mike
No, and we did a breakdown. I was stunned. Kovic one. The guy's been. Kitchmanovich has been in the fourth round here three out of four years. And the people he's lost to. Djokovic. Djokovic. Center.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
And then now center so he can play on grass. Short takebacks, can accept pace pretty well, but he Was beating Yannick kind of just playing through the middle, which is normally a recipe for disaster. Like I would have never, ever, ever mentioned that as a possibility for him. And it was working, but it was working because there was some relief. Janik was missing some today, right. He had 14 errors in the first set. You know, if you carry the. You have four and a half, three and a half games of errors just there. So scratchy. But let's think about this also when you win as much as he does. He was on a 30 match winning streak before Roland Garros, by the way. Like we forget about that a little too quickly. A month plus between matches for him is like an off season. But the only time he goes a month without playing matches because he wins as much as he does is, is like finals of Turin into Australia, which is like six or seven weeks, right? So there is going to be some, some rust. Grass is. You play in it for a month and then you don't play on it for 12 months. Like it's not something you practice on, it's not something you train on.
Sean
Right.
Mike
He did not get any grass. Even last year after the roll in Garrison, he went and played Halle and played two matches. There's value in that. Even though he lost a bublek or whatever. But like there, there is value in that. Was always going to be a little rusty. And when so much of the narrative about him coming into this tournament is heat, heat, heat, heat, heat, heat, heat. No one talks about his game ever. It's just all heat, heat, heat. There's never been more interest in the forecast nine days from now in the history of, in the history of tennis.
Sean
I mean, it's true.
Mike
But if you were going to have a gutsy win where you fall, I don't know how he didn't break all the hips.
Sean
I mean that, that.
Mike
Oh my God. That means it was one of those grass falls where you're legs go out.
Sean
That is where being a skier growing up probably came into effect. Because that was like yard sale central.
Mike
I'm telling you.
Sean
No skiing, you know what I'm talking about. It looked bad.
Mike
Where you kind of look. I was looking at the screen with one eye hoping he would like.
Sean
It's like a meniscus hip tear slip.
Mike
Brutal. And then whatever the hell he had going on with his nail, where he had the bloody. He had the shilling foot. Did you see this?
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
The shoe?
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
It kept growing like there was a lot of blood in there because it was a little spot to begin with. And then it was heading towards this heel.
Sean
Just like a sweaty, bloody, just grow white shoe.
Mike
Disgusting.
Sean
We'd have never seen it if it wasn't for the, for the Wimbledon whites.
Mike
He kept, he kept making the joke. He's like, because I don't know, I'll get something wrong. But the general gist of it is accurate. Like 90% of what covers you has to be white.
Sean
Yeah.
Mike
I was like, ooh, the shoes are flirting with.
Sean
Was definitely more than the piping. That's allowed.
Mike
When he, when he lost the third set, it was getting close. That thing was growing.
Sean
Oh, my gosh. It fit in, though, with the strawberry towels, though. Maybe it was a plan, we don't know.
Mike
But if there was a time for a very gutsy, kind of ugly win for him. Timing of the narrative is pretty good.
Sean
Can I give you the. The stat of the day brought to you by Surface Now. And this is something we were all talking about. Please. He's seven and 12 now in five setters in slams. Today's his first win in a five setter at a slam since his 2024 Australian Open victory over Medy. He had lost four straight. Yeah, five setters and slams since then. Granted, they're really good players, but like, winning this, right, despite all that, despite the 7 and 12 and all that, like, the way he looked after that was done, it was kind of like, I can do this.
Mike
There's a little spring into the next, next round.
Sean
Okay.
Mike
I, I think it's, I think him going five and surviving healthy, that's a big if. Like, you have to win for it to be good for you. Three and a half hours. Didn't get to that 350 threshold where he's never won a match past 350. There was an eye on that. But, like, I think this is perfect for him moving forward in this tournament. I think he's going to be a different human in the third round. I think there's ever a time for your foot to be bleeding through your shoe, to be falling down to get through it on not a perfect day. And I have to give him credit because being on the other side and every question, heat, heat, heat, heat on the desk. In the interview afterwards, we asked him about heat and he's patient. He's like, it's an issue. He goes, I look forward to doing it again. I like the challenge. He's not trying to poop it away or he's not frustrated ever. Like, try not losing your patience when someone asks you about, like, a flaw. 47 times a day.
Sean
Well, I have children, so I definitely.
Mike
Yeah, but that.
Sean
Always asked about that.
Mike
That gap is. Well, I mean, are you calling journalists children? Mike, please comment. Mike, at Sir, Mediagrade.
Sean
I'm saying I. I've grown to be very patient at producer.
Mike
I wish I knew email addresses.
Sean
He doesn't know what social media is.
Mike
Could have gotten you anything else.
Sean
Mike, to be honest with you, I thought this would be over by now by the time we were done recording. But Novak is in a tight one right now. They're in the third set. He's down three, two. Okay.
Mike
He was cruising when we started.
Sean
Yeah, he was. He'd won the first set, 6, 4. And lost second set, 7 5.
Mike
All right, you ready? You ready for this? You guys ready for this? I'm looking in the camera for those of you listening. Audio.
Sean
All right.
Mike
You ready for the magic of tv? Novak gets through in four sets. Tough one, Wins the first set, drops the second, gets through the next two. Not the worst thing for him. Try to get some reps going forward in the tournament. Not worried about him from here on out. He does have to kind of watch out for being on. On court too much, you know, but I'm not too worried. When you don't play at all is 5th tournament of the year or something, you kind of have to find your footing a little bit. You ready for option two? Okay, you ready? Novak wins a five set thriller pushed him towards the end. Like, I don't think this is great. I think the time on court is probably a little bit. A little bit too much. Like, you know, the body doesn't recover the same way at close to 40 years old. So we'll see. But he gets through it as Novak does. We'll see. Like, hopefully the recovery goes well and I guess we'll check in the next round. We'll. We'll see if there's any feedback as far as his body. Ready? Novak down in four sets. Back to back slams. Not making the second week for the first time. And I don't know how long. Like, it's crazy. Can't even believe it. Ready? Novak loses in five.
Sean
Oh,
Mike
crazy. Like, will we. Will we spit?
Sean
Is this bit over?
