Commercial Announcer
Hey everyone.
Andy Roddick
Welcome to serve. Brought to you by ServiceNow. I'm Andy Roddick. My partner in crime, John Wertheim. You see what I did there?
John Wertheim
What'd you do?
Andy Roddick
Thought I rhymed. Obviously, it wasn't obvious. How'd your day go? Day three.
John Wertheim
Good day again. Metabolism is my word. This, you know, draw gets cut in half. I'd say the when you say the intensity level, little different than it was yesterday. These events are so fun, but you get the feeling like sanity setting in with round two. I mean, round. Round one is just chaos and you can't even keep track of all the scores. Today was a little more manageable.
Andy Roddick
I was pretty happy because I arrived at the venue and you get out right outside the gate and sure as shit, I look right across the street and I see Wertheim with a bunch of cameras and mics. He's obviously doing a hit. So I only had one choice, Heckle. Which was to heckle.
Bill Simmons
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Did I interrupt A live like were you in mid flow?
John Wertheim
Did you have to cut and redo it? Yeah, it was. Who's that? That was Nate Burleson. What's a word with you?
Andy Roddick
Oh, sorry about that.
John Wertheim
Who is this angry man on the
Andy Roddick
street shouting during the live paradigms?
John Wertheim
All good, all good.
Andy Roddick
No, I, I thought it was, I thought it was an interesting day. Obviously the biggest upset of the day. Let's start with Barbara Kova taking out Roland Garros champion Andrea. I. I saw a stat. She's won two Grand Slams obviously in singles. She's won seven in doubles. How many top five wins before today has she had in Grand Slams?
John Wertheim
Oof. Tell me.
Andy Roddick
The answer is one.
John Wertheim
Is that right?
Andy Roddick
The answer is one. How many in her career top five wins does she have before today?
John Wertheim
Eight. Three. Eight. All right.
Andy Roddick
Like you, that's.
John Wertheim
This is a Newport bound player. She's picked her. She picked. Right. No doubt.
Andy Roddick
I can't tell you how everyone else is going to vote. I can tell you how I'm going to vote.
John Wertheim
You. You said upset today. I'd say upset. Let like mini upset. Right.
Andy Roddick
I mean if you listen to our draw episode, I was, I had Krit Cheva written in and then I just bitched out like I had. No, I couldn't, I couldn't do it because I just thought it was like the less risky option was probably Andre but to go to like a quarter.
John Wertheim
Right.
Andy Roddick
But this is one like nobody wants to see Krachika been a draw when she's not seated. Like she knows how to play in these. She's won two Slams.
John Wertheim
Did you watch that match too?
Andy Roddick
I mean this was a drama. I don't know how many she ended up having. She probably, I mean the count was up to like seven or eight match points before she closed.
John Wertheim
And then, and then she closed with a really strong, you know, she drops her serve and then closed. And there were a lot of weird moments. One of them. I saw this on Twitter. I wish I could say who was. Apparently Harry Kane from England scored a goal and everyone's watching on their phone and like Andrea like you know, misses a backhand and the whole crowd goes nuts. The hell just happened? I just. You and your. What do they call it when you score two goals?
Andy Roddick
What do they call that scoring two goals?
John Wertheim
It's got like a hat trick, a brick, a brack. Anyway. No, they're like, Harry had a brack.
Andy Roddick
Harry had a brack.
Blinds.com Advertiser
Yeah.
John Wertheim
So who, who's got Google
Andy Roddick
for sake? Yeah, yeah. I will say, I will say it is fun being over here during the World Cup. Like, everything just went dark. When England was playing the.
John Wertheim
Sally Bolton, the head of the England club, was saying, like, we're not going to show. You know, this is a tennis event. We're going to show tennis. On all the public monitors. I asked them, when I said, we're in the locker room, are you guys watching World Cup?
Andy Roddick
Yes, of course.
John Wertheim
Everyone's looking at their phone. So it's fine. It's once every four years. We can, we can take another sports international competition, but no Kikova. Despite that interruption from Harry Kane.
Andy Roddick
All right.
John Wertheim
Harry with his. God, I wish I remember the name. What we got to look that up.
Andy Roddick
It was a Brit.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
What do you call.
John Wertheim
What's the two goal equivalent of a hat trick? I just looked it up.
Andy Roddick
It looks like it's called brace.
John Wertheim
A brace. That's what it is.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Yeah.
John Wertheim
Harry had a brace. I was like, is he okay?
Andy Roddick
Well, was hurt.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly right. He got. Got an mto. Look out for Back to tennis. Look out for Bargara Krajikova. That was a nice win. Andreeva very upset. I don't know if you saw she
Andy Roddick
fling the racket at the.
John Wertheim
And so I don't, I don't. I want to quit tennis. And then she lost it in the, in the press conference. She's. She's a teenager. We'll give her some grace. But
Andy Roddick
she was, Caroline was, was honored today by the attitude. And Caroline's right. And I'm always entertained by people throwing rackets. I just like it. Kind of like, you know, I'd be pretty. I did it. And I find her petulance entertaining. That's probably not the right take. And she flings it. And I kind of was in the green room, so I started laughing.
John Wertheim
It's like mute with the Bo Jackson yesterday. Today we got a fling. She's a teenager. You win a major and you've got a lot of emotion pent up. You've got a lot of expectation for the next major and then you go out in round two and you don't play your best tennis and you have your opportunities and you don't take them. I, I get why you'd be a little bit emotional now.
Andy Roddick
It's a good throw.
John Wertheim
Good throw.
Andy Roddick
Yeah. I mean, it was, it wasn't as if it was one of those half throws.
John Wertheim
It's like, it was like.
Andy Roddick
It was like Sapphire legit.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly. Committed to the bit.
Bill Simmons
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
But I wouldn't, I would have been more upset if it was like a Half throw. I don't. You know.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly.
Andy Roddick
I like the full commitment. I can forgive that. Sabalenka gets through. Kessler played well. Like pushed her in the second set. That was actually a tough match. Naomi Osaka rolled. Shout out her daughter.
John Wertheim
Oh, shy.
Blinds.com Advertiser
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Three years old tomorrow. Happy birthday, little London birthday.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly. I talked to Naomi about that after the. She's in town. Daughter doesn't go to the tennis, which probably makes sense. Mom has her fashion. She seems like she's in a really good headspace.
Andy Roddick
Yeah, she's playing well. I mean, she's rolled the first two rounds. Jess Pagula, your pre tournament winner, one of the favorites, kind of getting through the paces. Couple tough first rounds. I. I like where she's at. I still think her game is really good on grass.
John Wertheim
Good for the surface.
Andy Roddick
Right? Yeah. I think so much of a. Gets through bench. It gets through. I'm telling you, that bench. It's Coco match. If. If we get there in the fourth round.
John Wertheim
History there.
Andy Roddick
Did you watch much of Coco today?
John Wertheim
I did, yeah. Yeah. Would you? I thought she got through. Yeah. A very potentially tricky match. Well, I got a great coach Coco story for you after we. After we talked to the match. But no, I mean, did you see. We talked yesterday about iga. We talked about Grigor. Did you see Coco's reaction to winning that match?
Andy Roddick
She got out of jail. I mean, there's no doubt. I mean, there was a lot of. So the positive first 10 aces, five double faults and she's being more aggressive on her serve.
John Wertheim
Right.
Andy Roddick
So that is a win because those numbers are normally flipped.
John Wertheim
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Right. Recent history. Anyways, I thought she served fantastic. I think she's trying to solve for the extreme grip on grass and having to have space to hit up on the ball. Not as much of an option on a grass court. A lot of sliced forehands, a lot of chip returns today. That's an adjustment. I don't know that I hate it. A lot of balls that were hanging in the middle of the court. I feel like she got away with it. I feel like she's, you know, I kind of say. I was saying it during the sits of boss match on or the Novak match against Sitzabas on espn. And is there something that automatically gets better because of the surface in Tsitsipas game? I don't know what it is. Serve a little bit. But like defending second serves is worse for him on grass. Right. Same with Coco.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
Right.
Andy Roddick
Like the speed and the movement is thwarted because you can slip. You don't get off the mark as fast. You can't switch directions as fast. The forehand doesn't give the space for her to find height and kind of hurt her opponent. The serve is better, but, you know, and this isn't something that's like an original opinion. She said it this week as much, but it wasn't. It wasn't great tennis. Sierra got tight towards the end, but like Coco's elite skill, competing her ass off, winning when she's still searching for something, it's a negative because the form isn't there. I would love it if she want to match three and two. And also, like, it's. It's an impressive skill also.
John Wertheim
I think the defense might benefit from this. No, I mean, she's scrambling around and she's. So she was down five, three.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
Yeah.
John Wertheim
And then she was down in the super tie break, I think seven, three. I mean, she was. I mean, you say get out of jail. That's really what it was. But she had some great scrambles. I think she's got. I don't know. You don't think she can cut off angles on this court. You don't think she can sort of scooch around and prolong points.
Andy Roddick
They have this thing where it's like movement on grass. There's two types of movement, and sometimes they're combined for like uber movement, like a Novak or someone. But there's like speed dynamics, which is like a mum feast, right? And then there's like the footwork dynamics, which, like Roger in a sprint, I don't know who he beats, but his footwork is perfect. Those small steps and the kind of flow mechanisms on grass isn't something that I think Coco has completely figured out yet. You say the defense, but is she going to be able to get away with hitting slice forehands without much on them, on in the middle of the court as the players get better. So what she gets away with today, I don't know that you can automatically project that forward and say, that's the recipe. That's what we're going to. That's the solution. Credit to her because she gets another chance to figure it out. I like, I like that she is actually having intent on her serve. That is aggressive, right. She can pump the serve. Like has a big arm. She doesn't sometimes because, you know, obviously that's been well documented issues with second serves and whatever. But, like, I'm just impressed with her because she. It's like, head down, get through it, you can figure out the rest of it tomorrow in practice or at least attempt to. But like champions mentality, kind of gets through matches that maybe she shouldn't all the time. So, you know, I think there's a positive there also on the men's side. FAA rolled. Caboli gets through, has to play again. Amara Medi gets through against Merida. Tommy Paul looks great on grass.
John Wertheim
Tommy Paul, by the way, he's like won the third most matches of anyone on tour this year. And Tommy Paul's going to turn. Tommy Paul has won 30 some odd matches, third most on tour. And he's. Remember, he got hurt at the end. He's defending very little. He's looked great. I think he spent like three hours in change to win two matches. He's looking very good.
Andy Roddick
Yeah, he was playing right behind me against Mueller first round. And it was like. It was like a match you see in juniors, like when. So when someone's just completely out. 70 something 1, 1, 2, you know, it might not have been that close. Fonseca looks good. I am like salivating for the potential down the road. Fonseca Djokovic match.
John Wertheim
We're angling for our second straight major, aren't we?
Andy Roddick
I mean, if all due respect, like Rinderkanesh, like friend of the show comes on, I know he's going to try to give Novak hell. Tennis universe.
John Wertheim
Yep.
Andy Roddick
What we saw in Paris, project, that forward crossing of the generations, different surface. This one is way more beneficial than Novak. And I'm going to get to Novak in a second because I called his match. I can't wait to see if that happens. Fuchsiavich gets through against Learner Tien. I don't know what I felt bad for Leonardian. He is not one that, at least in my experience, watching him is prone to like, drama.
John Wertheim
Right.
Andy Roddick
I don't think he is looking to kind of exaggerate anything. I don't know what it was, so I'm not going to play doctor here. He got through in the middle in that fourth set. At the end of the third set, beginning of the four set, couldn't move. I don't know if it was sick. I don't know if it's an injury. I don't know if it was both, but it was one of those ones where you're watching the four set, you're like, oh, this is over.
John Wertheim
Right?
Andy Roddick
This is. This is not.
John Wertheim
I mean, for. I mean, let's. Michael Chang isn't here for personal reasons. But also, did you notice Lerner eating bread? Not sure I've ever seen that. A tennis match bread during a changeover
Andy Roddick
which makes you think. I mean, listen, you, you hope long term after that, unfortunately, whatever it is today, you kind of hope long term that it's being sick that doesn't require, you know, a rehab stint. But I'm glad you mentioned Michael Chang. I think he's with his father who may not be doing well. So at least is the rumor and it's been talked about on air. So I'm not breaking any news, but thoughts are with him and hope he's back on tour. We wish held for his father and thinking of them. Francis Tiafo got through match suspended. Interesting scenario and it like caused me stress watching it yesterday. Like, he wins the first two sets, gets broken suspension immediately. So you're sitting with that overnight. You realize you've just lost your rest day. Comes out, finishes the match today, gets Otman had a. After Roland Garros, you know, we know what happened there against Arnaldi. Up two breaks in the four set, lets it go, loses in five like a little bit of a chip. Like loses serve to lose the third set before the sun goes down yesterday has to walk off right. Serving it out today like a chippy deuce. Add deuce ad. But did well, is playing great.
John Wertheim
He's great. I mean, so he. I talked to him after the match and he was saying, you know, he had this match and he. Roland Garros did not go well. In retrospect, that was a winnable match. Disappointment goes to hollow. Wins probably the biggest title of his career. He was saying he's playing this match against Felix, could have gone either way. He gets through it and all of a sudden he catches a gear and now he's won whatever it is. He's six, seven matches in a row. His 30th, July 1st, and he's won 30 matches so far this year. And suddenly he looks like he's in a really nice position. Didn't seem remotely phased. He's losing the off day. All right. Be okay.
Andy Roddick
Helps to play 38 minutes on court today. But like.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly. But like the. And it's not dissimilar to Tommy Paul. The level of professionalism for these guys is now in their, their mid to late 20s. It really makes a difference. And all of a sudden Francis looks like a player to really keep an eye on here.
Andy Roddick
He could make a deep run here. I mean, that, that, that.
John Wertheim
Oh, shit. I didn't tell you my coco story. All right, let's keep going. I'll save it for the end.
Andy Roddick
Well, now I want to hear it.
John Wertheim
We're interrupting the men, man.
Andy Roddick
It's not really pa. They can wait. Ladies first. Let's go.
John Wertheim
All right, so Coco, three set win, relief to get through. Good spirits comes to Tennis Channel. We chit chat. She's lovely. Great interview. We got to get her on the show. And then the someone from the social media team says, oh, you know, we're doing a fake dating. I don't remember what the. There was a conceit. Where are you from? Delray, Florida. Blah, blah, blah. What's your secret talent? She says, I don't really have. Well, actually, I can. You know what? I can. I can walk on my hands.
Commercial Announcer
What?
John Wertheim
That's interesting. And then Coco says, you want me to do it?
Andy Roddick
Yeah.
John Wertheim
And I'm thinking, part of me is thinking, hell yeah. And the other part of me is
Andy Roddick
thinking, you know, if she falls.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly. Former US Open champion, had to withdraw from Wimbledon.
Andy Roddick
Did she walk in her hands?
John Wertheim
I'm sitting there and I'm like. All of a sudden, I turn over and she's as far away from me as I am from you right now. And there goes Coco walking across the Tennis Channel studio. There's gotta be. I mean, go find. I mean, with any. Someone has to have posted this by now, of course. So I don't think I'm giving away any great industrial secrets here. And I'm thinking, a, how cool is Coco? B, how cool is tennis? We're in the middle of Wimbledon. It's literally like the middle of the Super Bowl. Hey, could you juggle chainsaws? Coco Gauff, contender to win the title, is next to me, walking on her hand, her shirt. I'm thinking, this is why this sport is so wacky. Awesome. But my highlight of the day had nothing to do with forehands and backhands. It was watching Coco walk across the studio on her hands.
Andy Roddick
That's amazing. Tomorrow what's going to happen? Is sinner going to make me a balloon animal clown?
John Wertheim
Yeah. Exact. Exactly.
Andy Roddick
Fantastic. It be amazing.
John Wertheim
This is like the perfect distillation of wacky tennis and why we love it. Anyway. Good. All right.
Andy Roddick
I love that.
John Wertheim
What else we got?
Andy Roddick
Jensen Brooksby gets three straight sets. Yeah, he didn't walk on his hands, but he did win six straight sets. Coco didn't do that. This tournament so far, Coco doesn't have
John Wertheim
to play Yannick center next year.
Andy Roddick
Yeah, Brooksby got to play Yannick Center. That's g. I mean, it's going to be. That's going to be tough. Davidovich Keep Fokina rolling, actually, like, keep an eye on him. Broke the streak. No longer the best player not to have won a tour title on tour.
John Wertheim
We got up that.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
Yeah.
John Wertheim
Who that is now.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Oh, that's a good. That's a good thought.
John Wertheim
All right, well, maybe for a. Yeah, exactly. Do a little research.
Andy Roddick
Divided F through Nakashima. Struf. Suspended at two sets. All those guys both know how to play on grass. I did two matches today. Two matches. And then did studio work in between.
John Wertheim
That's why you've. All right.
Andy Roddick
That's why you will, like one of the. Before we get to sin. Or Novak. Because I did both those matches, so I have thoughts on both of them. Wimbledon is nice. It's nice to walk home, like, actually have, like, a real dinner glass of wine, all in the home that I found on Airbnb.
John Wertheim
See?
Andy Roddick
You see that? See what we did? But in all seriousness, it is fantastic. My family's here with me. My wife's here with me. It's like a sense of normalcy after the chaos. It's fantastic. You don't just come back, wind down, you know, wind
John Wertheim
E or D. You know what? I can. I can say we're off by a letter. Wind down, Wind down. Novak had the best dad joke.
Andy Roddick
It was so good of the day. Yes. Explain that. Explain that while I get drunk.
John Wertheim
Yeah, this. This is one to check out on the. On the interwebs, if you haven't seen it. This was great stuff. Stuff where he had.
Andy Roddick
For those listening. This is me.
John Wertheim
Oh, nice.
Bill Simmons
Okay. Sorry.
Andy Roddick
Go ahead. As you were.
John Wertheim
It's good. What are we drinking, by the way?
Andy Roddick
It's the color red.
Athletic Brewing Company Advertiser
Okay.
John Wertheim
It's grapey, as once said on the Bachelor. So. So Novak has summons. You saw this, right? Summons a boss. God, what was it? It was fabric.
Andy Roddick
He had, like. He had, like, tape or, like, something on his shoulder. And there was like. I mean, you explained there was like a. I don't know if it was a Ballgar. Court attendant.
John Wertheim
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Someone asked. He asked him to, like, cut. He asked her to cut it off.
John Wertheim
And then he pretends as though she got your name, you know, so she's,
Andy Roddick
like, cutting it off, and he flinches. Like she. Like, she cut him. And she. I mean, this lady was for, like, mortified.
John Wertheim
She's like.
Andy Roddick
And he goes, no, I'm just kidding. It was like. He completely sold it.
John Wertheim
It was a great Uncle Sheldon. Don't you such a. Like, dad.
Andy Roddick
Oh, Frank.
John Wertheim
Exactly.
Andy Roddick
So, so good.
John Wertheim
You and your shenanigans. Yeah, he Got her nose, too.
Andy Roddick
He delivered it while he cooked it.
John Wertheim
Right, That's. That's a dad of two right there. We could appreciate that.
Andy Roddick
That was fantastic.
John Wertheim
You want to talk about his tennis? I do.
Andy Roddick
I actually really want to talk about his tennis. Seeing him up close in the bunker serve is unbelievable. The ball striking is unbelievable. He is in this thing with a very real chance. Today was important on a number of levels. One, you win. Drive for 25. Still alive. Time on court. Hour and a half, maybe a little bit more. There was no part of his game that didn't look locked in today. And I know it's a good matchup. There's not much Tsitsipas can do. He likes to have more time. He likes to create more height. All of these things that grass doesn't lend itself to. I mean, I said in the green room, I say. I said, I think this is a runaway train of a matchup. Right now he's 111 straight. So now he's 112 straight against Steph. Um, but I mean, just vintage performance cooking second serve returns, moving the ball around. Got into those rallies where it's back in the back end and just started unloading into that corner. Like as much pace as I've seen him injecting into the ball in a while. I was. I was blown away by the quality with which he was striking the ball today.
John Wertheim
Tell. Tell our friends what you mean when you say bunker.
Andy Roddick
Oh, sorry. The bunker is where you call the matches for espn, BBC, and it's literally court level. So when Novak is looking up at his box and yelling at someone, he is yelling right over. If you see the glass panels right before the player's box, that's where the commentary boxes are. So I was in there. It's like a legendary place to be. It's a tiny little room. So I was in there with. With Mac Mike Balone, and then I did the center match with Fowler as well as. Very cool experience. Nice rite of passage. But Novak was. Was phenomenal start to finish. He is. He is in this thing called Sinner also. You ready for that? You ready for this? So during the match last year, and I harped on this, so people who watch the match are now sick of me saying this. Last year, through the first two rounds on his forehand side, Jannik Sinner had 14 unforced errors.
John Wertheim
Right?
Andy Roddick
14, 14 unforced errors. Last year, in the first two rounds of Wimbledon, he had 14 unforced errors. This year, through two rounds on the forehand side, has 43 unforced airs.
John Wertheim
All right, I was gonna say that first set against Kazmodovich probably had 14.
Andy Roddick
He had 14 unforced air. No, not total unforced air on one side.
John Wertheim
Yeah, exactly. Wow.
Andy Roddick
It's significant. And someone asked him, impressed, like, how's the forehand? He's like, it's not great. He told Caroline Wozniacki, apparently casually, she was like, hey, how's it going? He's like, my forehand's not very good right now. I'm like, okay, well, that's. I would've lied to her. I would've probably lied to her about that. Searching for a little something. Serve bailed him out a little bit. Borges played pretty well served for the serve for the second set and kind of just got tight. I don't know there's any way around it. I think Jannik is still searching a little bit against Brooksby. He's going to be able to hit a bunch of balls. Jensen's going to have to, like, play drop shots, switch directions. Just. He can't get kind of straight ahead with him. But, like, Novak looked way sharper today than Jannik.
John Wertheim
So first of all, what do you attribute that to? I mean, if. If it's heat and, like, okay, everyone's serve goes off from time to time for a forehand to break down that you were pushing.
Andy Roddick
But it was weird because it was like he was missing some and he would miss it wildly, and then it would be great again. Like, the thing that's actually. Because people will harp on, like, a negative. The thing that I'm always impressed with is, like, when presented with a negative, what is the superpower? Most of us would lay off, start kind of guiding the forehand. This guy, he just. It's like a. It's like Steph Curry shooting. Like, he.
John Wertheim
He.
Andy Roddick
He knows he's gonna make the next one. Kept ripping. There was no, like, layoff because my forehand is getting a little squirrely because I, you know, used, you know, the frame on a couple when I shouldn't have, like, the next one heavy again. I mean, there's. There's no other gear. Like, the guy puts more pace into the ball more consistently than maybe anyone I've seen, you know, and from extended positions, like Andre, obviously, when he was set, give the ball a ride like I've never seen before. You know, add six inches to that equation and some lag and some margin. Like, I'm. I'm. I'm also always amazed when I see Yannick in person. And this One was especially cool because I was eye level. He hits it so hard, so when you're watching at home, you can see how hard he's hitting it. But from that kind of above view, you have no appreciation. You can't have any appreciation or enough appreciation for how far he's hitting it over the net. The margin, it looks flat on tv, right? This thing is really. Oh, my God. It's. It's clearing the net by two feet every time.
John Wertheim
Like the sort of slappy. I mean, it's very effective.
Andy Roddick
No, no, it's. It's. It's got, like an arc to it. Even when he rips. Even when he goes rip city, if it's not, like, flat and inside out, where it's kind of. The trajectory is laid off inside spinny. The amount of margin he has over the net on an average forehand is shocking considering how hard he hits the ball.
John Wertheim
It's amazing how many forehanders.
Andy Roddick
40 something through two. Two routes.
John Wertheim
Wow. And last year, he had 14 in eight sets.
Andy Roddick
So that's another one for you. Last year, there wasn't a single match where he had more backhand winners than forehand winners. This year, he had six more backhand winners than. Or, sorry, today he had six more backhand winners and forehand winners.
John Wertheim
Which. Which way does that cut.
Andy Roddick
He's.
John Wertheim
He's dialing in his backhand or that's a function of how off his forehand.
Andy Roddick
I think the forehand. I think the backhand is like, the one that doesn't go right. I think maybe even similar to Rafa. Like, when Rafa was going rip city on his forehand, it was landing. You had no chance. I think when Jannik finds his range on his forehand side, it's something similar. And I don't know that he's completely satisfied with the range on his forehand yet. And we're nitpicking. It's round two.
John Wertheim
I was gonna say, like, if he
Andy Roddick
goes out and plays great in the semis and routes someone. We're not. This. This conversation is gonna be like a fart in the wind. Like, it's just. It's just out of here. So it is surprising that he's missed as much as he has off that side through the first two rounds. And also, like, you put more stock in a sample size of the last four years and four majors, and, you know, it would surprise no one if he turned it around in one match, but something to keep an eye on moving forward. You ready for the stat of the day brought to you by service now.
John Wertheim
What do you got?
Andy Roddick
This is a cool one. This is one where it's like. This is legit. All right, 21.
John Wertheim
21. Should I guess what that is?
Andy Roddick
No, you don't have to guess. All right, what do you got, Sabalenka? Oh, you know this. Has won 21 straight tiebreakers in Grand Slams.
John Wertheim
That's insane.
Andy Roddick
That's a joke.
John Wertheim
That's a joke.
Andy Roddick
Her tiebreak record can legally drink anywhere. It's like 21 straight breakers and slams, like the most pressure packed situations on earth. She's won 21 straight tiebreakers and Grand Slams, winning her 21st over McCarty Kessler today.
John Wertheim
Novak, I think on the men's record was like 19, but. But what? Okay, so this is different surfaces, right? This is different opponents. Some of these are early rounds of majors and other. These come in crunch time. These are in majors. So in baseball terms like the leverage, the pressure point would be the highest. That's extraordinary. I mean there are a lot of sort of fudgy tennis statistics and you're not quite sure how clean the data is. This is.
Andy Roddick
Which one's the fudgiest?
John Wertheim
No, I'm saying when you have. Yeah, it sounds like a commercial. Sounds like a commercial for. For kids cookies.
Andy Roddick
Yeah.
John Wertheim
How many breakpoints squandered. Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Shy's birthday cake tomorrow.
John Wertheim
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Happy 23 years old.
John Wertheim
21. Yeah. I'm doing the math in my head right now. I mean it's. I don't even.
Andy Roddick
I mean, I can't make it.
John Wertheim
But some of those are going to be super tie breaks, presumably. But that's, that's a great, that's a great set. What do you want?
Andy Roddick
That's absurd. The other thing to watch out for. It's not, it's not the stat of the day, but it might be soon if I was to say 105 to you after Novak's next win, the amount of matches that he's won at Wimbledon, which would tie the all time record with Roger Federer.
John Wertheim
Oh, is that right, little nugget? That's a good one.
Andy Roddick
He wins, he wins two more matches. So he'll be potentially playing Fonseca to
John Wertheim
eclipse Roger Federer's all time Wimbledon match record.
Bill Simmons
Yeah.
Andy Roddick
Pretty crazy. And the other crazy thing is that he's won like over 100 at the French Open and Roland Garrett. Sorry, the French Open. French Open. And, And Australia also.
John Wertheim
It's not bad. I was going, I was going to say this isn't even on paper. This isn't even his best major. Yeah.
Andy Roddick
It's. It's a joke.
John Wertheim
Yeah. I mean, joke.
Andy Roddick
Like, you know him. We all know the numbers at this point. And I was sitting on there like, it's still impossible for me to actually digest them properly. When you actually think about what that
John Wertheim
means, I also am thinking, oh, I saw a great statistic on Novak. Now, God damn it, now I'm forgetting what. Paul Goldstein is the last player to have beaten him in the first round.
Andy Roddick
2006 Australian Open.
John Wertheim
Good call.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
John Wertheim
How about Paul Goldstein. Shout out.
Andy Roddick
Paul Goldstein, head coach at Stanford. I got another one for you. Do you know who Paul Goldstein beat in the 1992 Kalamazoo final? 16 and unders.
John Wertheim
Who?
Andy Roddick
1992, he beat John Roddick in the final of Kalamazoo.
John Wertheim
Is that right?
Andy Roddick
Juniors.
John Wertheim
Oh, man.
Andy Roddick
To snatch a junior title away with neurotic family. That prick.
John Wertheim
Were you there?
Andy Roddick
Yeah, I was there. I'm just kidding. I love if, like, obviously anyone who knows Paul Goldstein knows he's, like, the nicest person ever. Like, obviously, he's not a fucking. You're not a fucking brick. You're the best.
John Wertheim
And he still got the record. No, no. I was thinking, too. I mean, Novak, we're not even talking about 39. That number, which happens to be his chronological age. I mean, if you would watch this match and, you know, anything, you'd say, like, oh, this is peak. Novak Djokovic, who's beating Tsitsipas, and now he's gonna move on.
Andy Roddick
His movement at this age, when he's not gonna. He's not the fastest he's ever been. His movement translates better on grass than any other surface. Where footwork matters, where nuance matters, where it's not just, you know, pure physicality. Like, he's in this thing. I'm just telling you right now. Message sent. He is cleaning the ball. And it's week two. Did himself a huge favor. Time on court in the first week is going to be a massive thing for him. He did himself a real favor today and had the best dad joke of all time.
John Wertheim
Great prank. Perfect. Great dad prank, that one. Plays well at the slumber party, but perfect execution. Great day for Novak.
Andy Roddick
Yeah. I wonder if he found his home on Airbnb.
John Wertheim
I bet he did.
Andy Roddick
He probably did. Sorry. That was shameless. This is served. Brought to you by ServiceNow again. We'll see you tomorrow. I have my dream job, but even dream jobs have not so dreamy parts.
