What's up, Chuckers? Producer Mike here. And this is the Served 5 Center for August 1, 2025, your weekly roundup of all things racket sports in 10 minutes or less. So let's get into it. Sounds like US Open Mixed Doubles won't be the only matchmaking shakeup at Fan Week. But before we get to that, more about the mixed doubles. Fourteen teams are now locked in for the new look US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. Eight duos earned direct entry based on their combined singles rankings, with Emma Navarro and Jannik Sinner currently leading the pack. Navarro made her intentions for the event pretty clear. Take a listen.
Emma Navarro
Hey, Janik, it's Emma here. Just want to say huge congrats on the Wimbledon title. I watched a lot of your matches. I watched the final and you look like, you know, you're playing a lot of good tennis. But, you know, I'm just getting a little bit worried because I didn't see, you know, that much net play. You did hit a tweener between your legs at the net at one point, which was, you know, kind of cool or whatever, but you missed the overhead. I don't even know if that really counts. I'm gonna need you to, you know, just put in a good bit of work at the net on the Devils court in the next month or so. And hopefully, you know, you can kind of improve that part of your game because I'm out here working hard at doubles pretty much every day. So I need you to just step up your game a little bit and sort of match my level there. Let's get to work, buddy.
Producer Mike
The wild card entries are also grabbing headlines, with Venus Williams teaming up with Riley Opelka, Taylor Townsend is joining forces with Ben Shelton, and defending champs Sarah Arani and Andrea Vavasori are back to chase another title. And while we're on the topic of what's happening during Fan Week, the US Open is going to be debuting its own dating show this year. Yeah, it's going to be called Game Set Matchmaker and it's happening right at Flush Meadows. The series follows Alana Sedaka, a sports savvy bachelorette known as the Champion, as she goes on dates during Fan Week with seven hopefuls including influencers and die hard tennis fans. And speaking of Fan week, Andy, John and myself will be doing a special live show August 21st from outside Arthur Ashe Stadium doing our Draw special so you can watch Andy and John debate their picks and this year maybe you'll be able to pick alongside. Stay tuned for more details. Sign up for the newsletter to check that out. Next up, Casper Rud is suiting up for Team Europe again, a squad that already includes Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Alexander Zverev and captain Jannik Noah. According to Casper. He's ready to go, he says. Quote the team aspect is unique. Getting to play alongside guys who are usually my rivals and to support each other is something we don't often experience. There are still some roster spots left to fill, but Team World, who will be going up against Team Europe, they have a lineup that is captained by Andre Agassi and is already looking solid with Taylor, Fritz, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and the fan favorite Joao Fonseca on to set number three. One of Canada's biggest tennis stars has just played her final match and gave her hometown an emotional send off. Montreal's own Jeannie Bouchard officially called it a career Wednesday night, bowing out in front of a packed hometown crowd. She pushed Belinda Bencic to a third set, gave the fans a show and then gave them a heartfelt farewell. Take a listen.
Jeannie Bouchard
It's so special to play my last match here in Montreal on this court in front of you guys. I remember being a little kid sitting in these stands hoping and dreaming that I would play on this court one day. I grew up playing on these courts and courts all around Montreal and near here, so it feels like such a full circle moment to finish my career here.
Producer Mike
Bouchard became the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam final and even caught the attention of the Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons, who shared a sweet tribute on Instagram this week. When talking about her next phase in life, Jeannie says she's planning on sleeping in, going on vacation, and eventually figuring out what's next in life. I doubt it will be playing another pickleball slam with Andy Roddick. I think they got dusted last time. Speaking of the world of pickleball, a collection of pickleball pros have launched the World Pickleball Players Association. The wppa, as it will be known, is open to all pickleball athletes. Their mission? Advocate for player health and safety, demand transparency and compensation, tackle scheduling issues and establish fair, disciplined protocols. One of the top pro players, Colin Johns, is a board member and says he doesn't expect the association to be combative in any way with with the tour, adding, they can make it as collaborative as they want. It's about some minimum standards that we can all agree upon. We want to make sure everyone is treated the same, whether you're the number one player or the 100th ranked player. The formation of the Players association was aided by Sports Solidarity, which helped unionize minor league baseball players in 2022. The professional tennis Players association was also supportive of the formation, calling it a significant and commendable milestone. And finally, on to set number five. She changed the game on the court. Now her story is taking center stage. A new play called Billie Jean is bringing Billie Jean King's legendary journey to life from Wimbledon glory to fighting for equity off the court. It's running now through August 10th at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Here's a preview. I'm Billie Jean.
