B
Oh, we recorded the whole thing and I realized my mic was muted.
A
The whole thing. What? Don't touch it again.
B
I don't. It's still. Hello, can you hear me?
A
We recorded the whole thing with all of the enthusiasm in my goose. The producer.
B
Yeah.
A
Who's like jolly, like microphones.
B
Yeah. It happens to the best of us.
A
Okay. That doesn't change what happened.
B
No.
A
At the Billie Jean Kane cup, we preview. Italy's the favorite.
B
You called it.
A
Got to take the throne. Paolini is nasty. Irani is like, her tennis brain is like. I don't know how it fits inside of her head. I don't know how it doesn't leak out of her ears. Like, it is so massive and it's, it's like Roger and there's. She's probably below tour standard as far as, like, athleticism. She's not going to be the fastest. She's not. She certainly doesn't serve the biggest. She's. She doesn't hit the ball the biggest. I think she never makes a wrong decision. Like, she never makes a wrong decision. She's in the right spot. She shades to the right pieces of the court. She takes away the easiest shot, always gives the person the toughest shot. Like, all of these little nuances. She is an absolute expert. If she doesn't stick around in this game for the next 40 years coaching, then someone's an idiot for not hiring her.
B
Yeah. I mean, so Italy topped China 20 in the quarters, and then Ukraine went on and topped Spain 2. Oh, and then they faced off yesterday, Italy topping Ukraine 2:1. You know, and ultimately, just like you said, right, if it gets to doubles against Italy, it's over.
A
Yeah. I mean, well, I'll tell you, like, USA took out Kazakhstan and that's like a, That's A rough draw because of Rubak can take over an entire tie right like she can. She is that good and that big of a talent. Where props to Emma Navarro beating Putin Saeva tough three setter like Emma Navarro coming through on that stage for her team, for her country. Not having won a lot of tight three setters this summer, like going to the US Open. I think she won one match between Wimbledon and the US Open. Found a little bit of form there. But gutsing out this match against Putin Sava, who's a hell of a competitor. Big, big win. Rabakina ran through Jess Pugula and Jess Pula is so good coming off of the US Open semifinal there, you know. You know, I think the world of Jessicula in her gamer Bacchana when she is on is the type of player, one of the few in the world who can take the racket out of someone like Jess Pugula's hands, right. Has the big serve is going to hold if she's striping returns and getting into rallies. Really tough. Listen, we'll tell you how we get stuff wrong. Every single Redraw show got one right. We said Lindsey Davenport, tough decisions. Who does she play? Who does she not? Townsend Doubles for sure. Took a guess. We think the best doubles combination is Pegula and Townsend and Pula Townsend get it done to deliver the 21 win over over Kazakhstan. Great Britain rolls through Japan. So it'll be USA and Great Britain to take on Italy in the final. I like the USA to advance here. You know Katie Bolter, very good player. That's not the matchup that Rubakona is against Pegula. I don't know that Bolter is going to be able to take the racket out of Jessica's hands. And if Jess Pegula isn't scared about the knockout punch, she's simply better on those terms than most of most of earth. Let's see if Emma Bar can get it done again against Sons Hall. And I still think the double is the wildcard. I mean, USA Italy is going to be great. Like, I think those are the two best teams.
B
No, I mean, let's not crown it yet. Let's not crown it yet. I mean, they know I'm saying let's not say USA Italy yet. I mean, we still got.
A
I just said that I thought USA.
B
Was going to be Great Britain. I don't know. I don't know. Anything could happen.
A
I'll bet you $10 we'll be on.
B
Tomorrow to talk more about it.
A
We're going to talk More about it. I'm just telling you that USA is going to beat Great Britain.
B
Okay, you bet me $10. We allowed to do that?
A
I don't know.
B
All right, I'll take that bet.
A
No, just for fun. No, sorry. We definitely won't bet $10. We'll bet. We'll bet 10.
B
Yeah, he's not mouthing it or anything.
A
It'll be fine. We do that.
B
Can we do that?
A
Can we deny it?
B
Can we deny? We deny it. I deny it. We didn't do it.
A
It's on.
B
Can we talk a little bit more about the Italian team and what their strengths are as a whole? You know, I mean, right now I feel like Jasmine Paolini can't miss no matter what.
A
Paolini is just a really good player. They just have their tennis IQ on that. On that. On that team is just insane. You know, the second single spot is the place where, like, Emma Navarro has to win that match if they play. I know you don't like me going ahead, but assuming the USA gets past Great Britain, which we can talk about tomorrow, whoever plays Italy, if it's Great Britain, they have to win that second singles match because the other two are big asks, right? Pelagula has the firepower to beat Paolini. She's been historically better than Paolini. The Italians love this competition. For some reason, they're drawn to this. I think they prioritize this event as it should be as much as any team in the world. And they've been successful. They like these team ties. And I do think there's something to it. Irani is just rough in doubles, but you know who's really rough in doubles, too?
B
Taylor Townsend.
A
Taylor King Townsend is an animal in doubles. This is. This is a well shaped team. If Navarro plays well, I'm gonna say it. You ready for this?
B
Yeah, I'm ready for it.
A
Navarro plays well. USA is going to win this thing.
B
Where does confidence sit for you? I mean, obviously Italy's flying high in confidence. They're confident in every single player on the roster.
A
USA seems confident, but, like, Pegula played well at the US Open. Emma's a really. Townsend's confidence is through the roof. It's just based on matchups at this point. Right. Like Italy we know is consistent. Paolini is one of the best players on earth. Arani is the factor. Like she is.
B
That's gonna be the difference.
A
Oh, she's so good. She's so much fun to watch. Watching the talent and the craftiness of Taylor Townsend, I actually like, listen, as a homer, I hope the US wins 2 0, right. I also want to see that doubles matchup with Townsend vs. Arani and to see they play very different, you know, Townsend's cross. Arani more like, shapes the court. Like, cuts off the easiest shot, gives you the toughest shot, is always in the right position. Paolini kind of shades behind her. I mean, their communication without even speaking with one fades this way. They work like a windshield wiper. Like, one goes this way, the other one goes this way. It's like what Bob and Mike used to do. Like, one covers the right side of the court, the other one shifts. Right. Like, they're so good at that court coverage. It's like you could tie, you could take like string, right? And let's say there was 10ft, you could put it around both their waists and they could probably keep it together.
B
Yeah.
A
Like, that's how well they move together.
B
And they're not even that tall. Both. Both.
A
Where they cover the court and where they. They make the court smaller based on where they. They shift and set up. It's. It's been fun to watch. We've been here. We're in San Francisco. You can seek our makeshift serve team. Behind us, there's Keith Krieger, our intern photographer, slash, one of the best potters on earth. Techie Sean's back there doing something. Dylan Walker's another intern of ours. We still don't know what his job is. He's the only one.
B
Procurement specialist.
A
He called his wife today, and his wife goes, are y' all done working yet? I go. To be fair, Dylan was done when he woke up, you know, but he's doing it. Where's Dylan? Doing a great job. Procure. What'd you call them?
B
Procurement specialist.
A
We were basically just trying to think of something to put on a Labor cup edge.
B
Yeah, I was trying to figure out how to get. Yeah, he's got a reservation.
A
Keith has potter photographer, and we dared say procurement, food procurement, something. And Keith's like, I'm not giving up restaurants. As if we have actual positions for these fake made up internships that we've been doing. Keith's been crushing it on the photos. Check out served, Instagram, social. Sophie combined with Keith Krieger. It's like the Avengers coming together for our social team. Techie Sean coming through with those live shows. We're like. The live shows we're doing from labor cup are actually like a TV show.
B
Yeah.
A
Like, it's like we have. I'm gonna say it wrong. We have jibs.
B
We have a jib.
A
Which means what?
B
It's a camera on a crane.
A
It's a camera on a crane.
B
Yeah. It gives sweeping, beautiful shots.
A
I just picture like Sam Yule Jackson. Go. There's cameras on a crane. Mother.
B
I think this needs to end.
A
Do what?
B
I think this needs to end.
A

In this episode of "Quick Serve," Andy Roddick and Mike deliver fast-paced reactions and analysis of the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup (BJK Cup) semi-finals, discussing stand-out performances, team strategies, and offering bold predictions for the finals. The conversation spotlights Italy’s dominant form, the US team’s chances, and key matchups heading into the final rounds. True to the podcast’s lively tone, the episode mixes tactical tennis insights with signature banter and behind-the-scenes commentary from the hosts’ makeshift crew at the event.
Italy affirmed their position as favorites by toppling China in the quarter-finals and overcoming Ukraine 2-1 in the semis.
Jasmine Paolini’s outstanding form and Sara Errani’s extraordinary court sense are highlighted:
"Her tennis brain is like... I don't know how it fits inside of her head. I don't know how it doesn't leak out of her ears—it is so massive."
[01:27]
Italy’s doubles prowess is seen as their trump card—if the tie goes to doubles, there's a strong belief Italy prevails.
USA overcame Kazakhstan in a tricky tie, with Emma Navarro earning praise for a gutsy victory over Yulia Putintseva:
"Emma Navarro coming through on that stage for her team, for her country... Big, big win."
[03:19]
The episode celebrates the critical doubles win from Pegula and Taylor Townsend, just as predicted:
"We think the best doubles combination is Pegula and Townsend, and Pegula Townsend get it done to deliver the 2-1 win over Kazakhstan."
[03:56]
USA now faces Great Britain in the semis and, if successful, will confront the Italian juggernaut in the final.
The hosts debate the potential final, with Andy confidently predicting a USA vs. Italy showdown:
"I'll bet you $10... USA is going to beat Great Britain."
[04:40]
Key matches and pivotal players are discussed:
Taylor Townsend vs. Sara Errani in doubles is painted as a particularly intriguing stylistic clash:
"... their communication without even speaking ... they work like a windshield wiper ... one covers the right side ... it's like what Bob and Mike used to do."
[07:09]
Italy is described as consistent, intelligent, and historically passionate about team competitions.
USA's mix of confidence, tactical depth (especially Townsend in doubles), and matchups suggests they could challenge even the most favored Italians.
"If Navarro plays well, USA is going to win this thing."
[06:18]
Both hosts agree the doubles match could be the decisive point in the final.
On Sara Errani’s Legendary Tennis IQ:
"She never makes a wrong decision. She's in the right spot ... She is an absolute expert. If she doesn't stick around in this game for the next 40 years coaching, then someone's an idiot for not hiring her." (Andy Roddick, [01:27])
On the Drama of the Matches:
"If it gets to doubles against Italy, it's over." (Andy Roddick, [02:13])

Behind-the-Scenes Humor and Crew Shoutouts:
The hosts joke about their makeshift team—photographers, “procurement specialists” and tech support—offering comic relief and authenticity.
"Dylan was done when he woke up, you know, but he's doing it ... Procurement specialist." (Andy & Mike, [08:08-08:24])
On the Growing Production Value:
"The live shows we're doing from Laver Cup are actually like a TV show ... We have a jib. Which means what? It's a camera on a crane ... It gives sweeping, beautiful shots." (Andy & Mike, [09:01-09:11])
