Andy
Hey everyone. Welcome to Quick Served. I'm Andy, he's producer Mike. Techie. Sean is in the house. He also is in the house. And Amanda Anisimova taking out arena Sabalenka in the semis. And Iga Sviatek winning 6260 against Belinda Benchic. Tale of two matches. They couldn't have been more different. But you know what? Winners end up in the same spot is a chance to raise the Wimbledon trophy for the first time in Anna Samova's first Grand Slam final. Eagle will put her unbeaten record in Grand Slam finals on the line on her least favorite surface against someone who, I guess it has to be their favorite surface. Anna Samova. I, I mean she hustled her way through that match, right? Hit through her in the first set. Sabalenka adjusted, found it. And then Ana Samova wins the third set largely obviously the ball striking is still there. That's her bread and butter. That's what she does. But was like hustling one more ball down, hit, hit a couple running passing shots, hit a couple drop shots like these little, little chipper cross courts against Sabalenka. When someone is known for just creating the speed and not having that variation when it comes, it's, it's like jarring and credit to her. You could see she was nervous, you could see she was dealing with everything and she Just delivered. And it was, it was fun to see what, you know, never could she have imagined. Two years ago on the sidelines, not doing anything, really living her life like a normal person. Two years later, Wimbledon final beating, number one player in the world in the semifinals. Just, it was, it was great theater. I feel for Sabalenka just because she's been far and away the best player in the world this year. I don't even think there's like a close second and it's just this weird thing where you lose a tight final to Maddie, you lose a tight final to Coco and a tight semifinal to Anna Samova. At what point do you like, think about that stuff a little bit? Right. I mean she, she couldn't lose going into Aussie Open final this year, you know, two time defending champion a rolled at the US Open and now there's going to be. And she'll get through it. She's, she's a great player. She's still going to win, you know, a lot more majors. But there will be some mental gymnastics that these first losses are. Sorry that these three losses, latent Slams, you know, they'll creep in a little bit. And that's, that's sports, that's being an athlete. That's what you have to deal with. But all credit for to Anisimova. I mean her reaction when she won was just disbelief. Like I don't think I've ever in my life won a match and gone slower with my body movements. Right. It was, it was almost just this. The weight of. It was just. It was amazing. It was, it was, it was really fun to watch.
Mike
Yeah. The. A good stat is that she's now Anis Moma has now beaten Sabalinka on all three services and she is five and three against her in the head to head.
Andy
Yeah, I mean it just seems to.
Mike
Be a matchup, matchup challenge.
Andy
All matchups. All matchups. Right. She still, you know, still doesn't, doesn't play as well consistently as, as Sabalenka. She probably doesn't serve as well consistently as Sabalenka. She probably doesn't move as well consistently as Sabalenka. She probably doesn't have the variety. But we, what have we been saying? I chose Sabalenka to win this tournament. If I had to do it again, I would probably choose her again. But puncher's chance, when you can match Sabalenka's power, which in a Samova is probably one of the only people that can. And you can hit lines you can maybe expose people if you have an above average serving day. But the biggest thing to me was four or five years ago maybe when Ana Samova didn't enjoy the game as much. I don't remember these hustle situations, these one more ball situations mixing it up. You know, it just seemed like she was enjoying the fight of it out there. And I, I probably, you know, this is going to get talked about ad nauseam over the next two days, but I don't know, I don't know if that self corrects, if she doesn't kind of step away, get perspective and choose the game of tennis again. Right. Remember the Andre episode? He's like, I didn't choose this and I had a, a bitter relationship for a while. Anna Samova has chosen this second version of her tennis life and it shows when she plays now, maybe it won't show all the time and I'm sure there's going to be ebbs and flows, but I don't know that she handles it this well. You know, she made a semi a Roland Garros. I don't know that she handles it as well without being honest with herself and with, with who she saw in the mirror and in taking that time away. So credit to her was absolutely amazing. And iga, I mean she, she's not, Mike, she's not losing a lot of like when she's losing points, it's when she's hitting the right ball and maybe just missing it. There is next to zero indecision with IGA right now. She is not running around forehands. She is taking it straight from the middle of the court and that's buying her time of not having to get it around right. She doesn't have the time and she's not trying to square peg, round hole it. Her backhand there, you're, there's just not enough chat about it. We like the spin profile of the, the forehand, her footwork and all the little steps, you know, deservedly so, but gets the majority of the conversation. Her backhand, she needs no take back. It's like taking a rubber band back and snapping it. You can do it as quickly as you want.
Mike
She loads it quick and fires.
Andy
She doesn't even. It's like James Blake's forehand. Like back in the day, he literally. I used to make fun of him because he would take it back like two feet and hit it harder than the rest of us who had like full shoulder turns and whole thing. She needs no prep time on, on the, on the backhand side, and she's using that side. When you don't need time to prepare on a surface where your time gets taken away, you should default to that side more often, especially when you can hit it both ways, which she is. And also she's returning like an animal. She, she's creating mannequins on three or four. First serve returns per set. Right now, she's seeing the ball like a, Like a watermelon, right? In, in, in, in, in, bench. It just couldn't get that, like, forward movement where she would gain momentum. One shot, two shots, three shots. It was like one shot. Okay, I'm backing up. I have to start over. Oh, and she's pushing me to the corners now, and the point's over. Like, there was, There was no flow to what she was doing. And that's, that's because IGA took it out of her hand. She didn't let her do that movement where she's gaining on the, the court, you know, for two, three balls in a row. It's like we said, the second serve was coming slow, and IGA was just ending it. So, you know, as we project forward, I, I, I think IGA has to be the favorite, but Anna Samova has just been stepping up. It's just been so fun to watch. She has to serve well again, and she has to get the first strike in. If she gets moving, Sabalenka's power is different. She doesn't, you know, she, she can take it inside the court, but it's like more like a, Like a mosquito, right? She's on you quicker than, like, a bee who circles you, and then, like, the bite is, is harder. Like, Iga's just taking time away. She's seeing the ball quicker than everyone else and making decisions at lightning speed. I mean, she's beating really, really, really good players badly. I mean, roll through. Collins rolls through. Sim. Son of a. That second set was tight, and it could have been a lot worse, you know, to beat Benich 2. And, oh, on grass. I mean, these are real scorelines. These are scorelines you see like in, in junior tennis. I mean, she won that match, and it wasn't even, like, 12 minutes. It was like, not even over the top. It's like, okay, I, I got this. She was, she was locked in, so we'll see what, what happens with the nerves. But it's, it's weird. We talk about IGA a lot, and, you know, she, it's like, well, does she get tight? And does she, you know, the, the. You can See, you know, the, the, the stressors mentally on her, guys. She's never lost a Grand Slam final, so it's like, you know, some people that get celebrated for being mentally tough, like, I don't know, like, people thought I was a fighter. Yeah. I didn't win. I wasn't undefeated in Grand Slam finals. News flash. Like, I'd love to be as mentally up and down as IGA Swiatek, I'll tell you that shit right now. Um, she is, she's, she's playing fantastic. I, I don't, I don't know that I've ever seen an improvement since Pete Sampras year to year on, on a certain surface. Right. He hated grass for, you know, 90 through 92 to 93, it was like, this tournament's going to be mine many, many, many times. But whatever it is, it's, it's working. You know, she's, she's, she's playing great. What, what, what struck you, Mike?
Mike
I mean, it was just that I, I think the, the speed that she, that IGA rolled through the match, and I think it was just, it was just dominant and it was just direct and it was her game. You know, I, obviously they kept cutting to Belinda's. The, the toe cut out at the top of her shoe, you know, for. But I think I texted you, I was like, even if the toe was an issue, I, like, maybe she, maybe it's, maybe it's three in one.
Andy
Yeah, but it was playing. It was just wild. The toes, interesting and it's, it's there. And Belinda was so tough yesterday getting through that. It doesn't feel great. And also sports, like, like Karate Kid, you sweep the leg. Like, if Belinda Bencic has a toe and you know there's a toe, then you bully her even more to the corners. That's what you do. This is sports. This isn't feelings. This is sports. Unless you're playing in Newport where then you just play patty cake. But. Sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. But like, real tournament. But like, yeah, but like, it's what should have happened, right? But IGA just like, okay, here's your toe. I need to take you out. And that's what the highest level of this sport looks like. That's what it looks like is no mercy. Take it out. Execute. Cold blooded. That was eager today. Yeah, she looked, she looked fantastic.
Mike
And anisomova has won 29 straight matches after winning the first set at this point. So I think it'll be really interesting to see on Saturday.
Andy
Yeah. And iga. IGA likes to start quick. Also. She's a. She's a great front front runner. And I don't mean that as if she's. Normally, when people say front runner, they say it in a way that means, you know, they. They don't fight or, you know, that person's a front runner. I. I'll tell you, Federer was a front runner, like, and that doesn't mean he can't fight. We've seen him come back for. But, like, once he got ahead, you. They. He went into God mode. You know, you get broken in the first set and you're like, fucking hell, here he goes. Like, it's, it's. It's more. It's not. It's not even meaning just that you don't fight. It just means that once you get ahead, you can just feel the confidence swell. I think they both operate that way. I'll be very curious. I mean, I think the game plans for both of them are pretty straightforward, right? And if. If IGA serves as well as she has been, I mean, she's up 118 consistently. Like, popping first serves, moving it around a little bit. She's taking a way more aggressive serving mentality. It almost reminds me of. I remember Rafa in 2010 at the US Open was all of a sudden popping serves at like 1:35. And we're going, wait, now you're doing that too? Like, we already had to deal with all the other. And that's kind of what it feels like with iga. She's going to have an aggressive serving mentality. She knows that animus. Ana Samova is going to be looking for second serve returns, and Ana Samova knows the same. And IGA is going to have to take that power from Anna Samova. Sorry, Svotek. Is gonna have to take that power from Anisimova and redistribute. Right? Ana Samova is. Is many things. I don't know that she. She's ever been accused of being like, a great mover, right? And. But she can combat that by controlling the middle of the court. Pace through the court is tougher to redistribute. IGA's been doing a great, great job of it, but that's the matchup. That's the whole deal. If we look back and say, you know what? IGA shot tolerance and her ability to redistribute power to the corners, she did that well, then it's her match. I think it's that simple. And Anisimova is going to Take risks. She's going to take them early and she's going to go after that forehand. If you're going to make IGA play defense, you have to make her play defense on the forehand side, which she's been doing well, mostly cross court, right? If you're in a Samova, you take one hard there, you know that you make her play defense line, see if she can do it, and if not, you're set up for the next one. You can distribute either way, but I think that's the entire matchup. And I'm. I'm really curious to see how they show their cards in the first couple games knowing that, you know, both of them turn into a little bit of a downhill snowball once they. Once they get a lead, you know, that's it. I got a trivia question for you, Mike.
Mike
Very Shoot.
Andy
This is it. This is it. And if you're listening, if you're a new listener, welcome. If you're not, then, you know, Mike's just.
Mike
He's just is.
Andy
He's learning his little heart out about our sport. Techie Sean, you knew Techie Sean, you get in on this, too, and there's going to be a lot of chuckers screaming answers. So Ana Samova's initials. What are they? And okay, two other people have one Wimbledon with the initials A. A legacy, all right?
Mike
And I'm never gonna get this.
Andy
1975 Wimbledon.
Mike
All right? It's nine years. Nine years before I was born.
Andy
He played Jimmy Connors in the final.
Mike

Mike
Yeah, you were.
Andy
You were scrolling. You were doom scrolling Newport scores.
Mike
I was. You know what? I was rewatching that excellent match. I was like, man, maybe Sophie's right. Maybe Sophie can go pro. Andy, she just.
Andy
Oh, my gosh.
Mike
Well, no, she just has to get Jack stock.
Andy
No, no, no. Sophie. Sophie could go. Actually, this is proven that Sophie can go pro. She just needs to make. She just needs to be a billionaire first. That's it.
Mike

Episode: QUICK SERVED: Wimbledon Day 11 - WOMEN’S SEMI-FINAL RECAP
Release Date: July 10, 2025
In this episode of "Quick Served," host Andy Roddick, along with producer Mike Techie Sean and special guest Amanda Anisimova, dive into the riveting women's semifinals at Wimbledon. The discussion centers around the contrasting performances of Amanda Anisimova and Iga Świątek, providing in-depth analysis and predictions for the upcoming final.
Andy Roddick opens the discussion by recapping Amanda Anisimova's impressive victory over Aryna Sabalenka. Anisimova secured her spot in her first Grand Slam final by defeating Sabalenka, a dominant player known for her powerful game.
Andy [02:45]: "Two years ago, Anna was on the sidelines, living a normal life. Fast forward to today, she's in her first Grand Slam final, beating Sabalenka, the world's top player this year. It’s incredible theater."
Amanda showcased exceptional resilience, especially in the third set, relying on her consistent ball striking and strategic mix of running passing shots and drop shots. This victory marks Anisimova's 29th straight win after taking the first set, highlighting her rising momentum in the tournament.
Andy [04:25]: "Anisimova has now beaten Sabalenka 5 times out of 8 in their head-to-head matchups, making her a formidable opponent."
Mike adds that Anisimova's ability to adjust her game was pivotal in overcoming Sabalenka's power, noting the mental and physical stamina required to secure such a win.
Switching focus to Iga Świątek's match against Belinda Bencic, Andy praises Świątek's dominant performance. Świątek demonstrated exceptional speed and decision-making, minimizing errors and controlling the match from the outset.
Andy [06:00]: "Iga is not just playing hard; she's playing smart. Her ability to take the ball early and make quick decisions is unparalleled."
Świątek's aggressive serving and impeccable backhand were crucial in dismantling Bencic's game. Mike highlights Świątek's consistency and aggressive mentality, drawing parallels to Rafael Nadal's serve strategies.
Mike [10:28]: "The speed Iga brought to the match was just dominant and direct. It was her game, executed flawlessly."
Despite a minor issue with Bencic's toe injury, Świątek maintained her composure, showcasing the high level of professionalism and competitive spirit necessary at the top tier of tennis.
Andy delves deeper into Anisimova's journey, emphasizing her transformation over the past two years. From grappling with the pressures of professional tennis to now thriving in Grand Slam finals, Anisimova's mental fortitude and adaptability have been key to her success.
Andy [05:10]: "Anisimova's reaction to winning was sheer disbelief. She hustled every point, showing a side of her game that’s both gritty and graceful."
Mike underscores the strategic advantage Anisimova holds over Sabalenka, especially in serve and movement, while acknowledging Sabalenka's overall superior consistency.
Świątek's performance is lauded for its precision and aggression. Her ability to control the court and dictate play through her forehand and backhand has been a highlight of her game.
Andy [07:13]: "Iga doesn't need time to prepare her backhand. It's like a rubber band snapping back, allowing her to maintain relentless pressure on her opponents."
Mike points out Świątek's relentless serve and return game, which have been instrumental in her swift victories against top contenders.
Mike [11:57]: "Iga’s serve is up 118 consistently, and her aggressive serving mentality reminds me of Rafa’s game. It's a game-changer."
The hosts discuss the upcoming final match between Amanda Anisimova and Iga Świątek, analyzing potential strategies and key factors that could influence the outcome.
Andy believes that while Sabalenka was the favorite earlier in the tournament, Anisimova's momentum and Świątek's consistent performance make the final an exciting showdown.
Andy [13:30]: "If I had to pick again, Sabalenka would be my choice to win the tournament. But Anisimova has matched her power in a way that’s rare, making the final unpredictable and thrilling."
Mike emphasizes Świątek's advantage in speed and decision-making but acknowledges Anisimova's ability to take risks and disrupt Świątek's rhythm.
Mike [14:15]: "Anisimova is going to take risks early, especially targeting Świątek’s forehand. If she can keep Iga on the defensive, it could tilt the match in her favor."
The consensus is that the final will hinge on Anisimova's ability to sustain her aggressive play against Świątek's strategic dominance.
As the episode wraps up, the hosts encourage listeners to subscribe to their newsletter for ongoing Wimbledon coverage and insights. They express excitement for the final match and the concluding days of the tournament.
