Bank of America FDIC welcome to Sharper Square presented by Hard Rock Bat. We are part of the Volume Podcast Network. This is the show that makes the squares sharper and makes the wise guys pay attention. I am Chad Millman. I am joined as always by my co host, my companion, my compadre, my bff Professional Better Simon Hunter. Hello, Simon.
Matt Mitchell
Chad. What a weekend I had, buddy. LeBron James couldn't have dreamt it. I know you're jealous. I. I honestly can't get over it. It's been multiple days and still in Philly. We're talking as if it's like Joe June of the NBA playoffs. It's all non stop NBA coverage right now because the city's so in shock. And I got to see the Odyssey. I don't know if you've seen the Odyssey yet.
Chad Millman
Oh, I've seen the Odyssey. I got takes on both of your comments.
Matt Mitchell
I went to King of Prussia, which is the only place near me that has the 70 millimeter IMAX. And yeah, the hype is real, right? I don't know if you can attest to it, what version you saw, but I'm always, you know, I've saw interstellar in the IMAX 70 millimeter. And it's, it is, it was incredible. This movie. You can see it regularly, I think. But the, if you, if you're able to get to that 70 millimeter, I know there's a lot of pretentious people saying that's the only way you can see it. Truly, if you can see it that way, it is, it's an epic movie made for something like this. It really is an incredible experience. So all time weekend between LeBron James and the Odyssey, which is, you know, it's hyped to no end. It's. It lives up to it. It was an epic, epic movie.
Chad Millman
So on the LeBron front, great. Don't care. Like, I like LeBron. I like that there's going to be more competition in the East. I, I like that there's real continued deep seated animosity that is even heightened now between the Sixers and the Celtics. Look, growing up in the 80s, before Jordan was on the Bulls, I, I lived and died with the Sixers. My nickname, as you know, Simon, was Dr. C. Because I loved Dr. J so much. I can still to this day name not just the starting lineup for the 1983 76ers. I think I can go 10 deep on that team right now. Love that team. Like when they would lose to the Celtics, I would, I would be in physical pain. Like when they were up in the Eastern Conference finals and lost and the Celtics went to the finals and won. It would, it was excruciating to me. So I love like a good Sixer Celtics rivalry. I think it's great for the NBA. I'm going to love a Sixers Knicks rivalry. I think it'll be great for the NBA. I don't care about LeBron. Ring chasing. Doesn't matter to me. I think he's a great player. I love watching him play. I like the way he interacts with teammates. I think Jordan's the best player ever. Maybe Kareem, you Can make an argument. But I Love, love watching LeBron. Don't care where he's playing. I got to take on the Odyssey. I saw it in. I didn't see it in 70 millimeter because I live in central Connecticut and the nearest theater is 2 hours away with the 70 millimeter. I saw it in a regular IMAX. Great movie. Amazing cinematography. Knowing sort of the stories that they don't really use cgi, that everything is created. They used. They used jet skis to get the whirlpool going in the ocean. Everything was filmed live, all that kind of stuff. Amazing. Odysseus, kind of an idiot. If you look at every single decision he made, from deciding not to follow Agamemnon to where he decides to land to how he approaches strangers, every single decision was a terrible, terrible decision. I feel like the guy gets a ton of credit for creating the idea of the Trojan horse and getting them into the gates. And after that, he doesn't deserve to be followed because he made terrible, terrible decisions. That's my take.
Matt Mitchell
Just everyone's aware Chad thinks a man that invented the most genius, one of the most genius war strategies the history of humankind that we're still talking about 3,000 years later is an idiot. God bless Chad Millman.
Chad Millman
I'm just saying in this movie, if you look at it objectively, in this movie, Terrible, terrible.
Matt Mitchell
My favorite part of the movie. I know this is gonna sound so stupid. There was a guy who dies in this movie whose name is Mentor.
Chad Millman
Oh, yeah.
Matt Mitchell
That blew my mind. I mean, I just love all of our. Our. Our words come from and everything about the human experience. But the fact that Mentor was a real person, that was obviously a mentor for Odysseus's son who died, and that's how his legacy lived on, right? They. They couldn't give him a proper burial. He said his name will live on.
Chad Millman
Yes.
Matt Mitchell
I mean, that blew my mind. Homer. Homer, whoever. Whoever wrote that. I mean, 3,000 years later, like we said, Chad still slaps. And the whole time I watched that movie, I kept thinking, 3,000 years later, if they tell a story from right now, would it hold up, right? Like, is Christianity or Judaism still going to be a religion in 3,000 years? Because the whole movie is all predicated on religious beliefs, right? About Zeus, Poseidon, these gods. So I found that just really interesting about how wrapped up their lives were in Forklore and just the gods and respecting the gods. And what was the Zeus. The whole point of the movie, basis of the movie is you need to treat a Beggar with respect. Because it could be Zeus in disguise. Right, Correct the whole point. And he basically suffered these punishments because the Trojan horse, like Chad just said, is it supposed to be a gift? Right. That was a gift to the Trojans and it was a trick. And that's why he paid like hell for whatever that was, 20 years to get back to his family. So, yeah, just, again, just such a well done movie. I know there's always gonna be haters and critics, but like Chad said, there was no cgi. And when you're watching this movie with giants, all these crazy things, you're just like, this is how they should still be doing movies. I. I hate CGI. So, yeah, just 10 out of 10 experience.
Chad Millman
Well, the other thing is that he did not believe in the gods. And so every decision he was making was tempting or challenging the gods. And he was consistently being proven that the gods exist, which is also part of the folklore. Agree with you. Great movie. Matt Damon is unreal. It's three hours and there wasn't a second where I was like, God, I wish this would end like it was. It was.
Matt Mitchell
No, not even the pig part. The big part, I could do without.
Chad Millman
I thought it was. I don't want to ruin wild. I. I thought it was wild, but also it's wild to me because I'm thinking, how are they doing this without sort of, you know, the, the effect. So great movie. Go see it. I feel like more people feel the way I do that maybe, you know, Odysseus wasn't the best decision maker, got a lot of credit, and then sort of rode the coattails on that one decision. But whatever. A lot of people, A lot of people have gotten by on one big idea. We have an idea that we run into the ground every single year. Because it's honestly one of my favorite episodes. And before we kick off our division by division, NFL betting previews on Thursday, we have one final order of business. It is NFL. It is our most controversial annual episode. An episode where, to quote our producer Matt Mitchell, Chad makes deeply upsetting choices that should land him in prison. Kind of like Odysseus making bad choices every which way. Chad had one good idea, and since then, he's just been making bad decisions. Today is our top 10 NFL quarterback rankings. We vary scientifically. Use a betting wedge to analyze the league's best quarterbacks. Before we bring in our guest, Matt Mitchell is going to come on. He's going to share a story. I don't know what it is. He's the producer he just gets to decide when he does this. So, Simon, let's hear it.
Simon Hunter
Hello, boys. Chad, I don't know how we're going to maintain the title of the most literate sports betting podcast when you treat Odysseus like he's fired Eagles coordinator Kevin Petullo.
Chad Millman
By the way, that's why we're the most literate sports betting podcast, because we can have conversations in which we challenge the norm, in which we lead into. We read into the subtext.
Simon Hunter
Yeah, my bad. Okay, so I'll keep this quick so we can bring in Rich. Get to the meat of this.
Chad Millman
I haven't yet, so don't.
Simon Hunter
Yeah, everybody just endured this breakdown of a 2700 year old story. Okay, so my father in law, who I love big time, is Big Tom's birthday on Saturday. He wants to come up from Chicago, spend the day with us here in Milwaukee. I said, sounds great. I love Tom. My wife goes, what are we going to do? What are we going to do with my. With my father? I said, don't worry, I'll handle the whole thing. Tom and I are a lot alike. I know exactly how to show him a great time. He comes up Saturday morning. As soon as he arrives, I say, crin, I'll be right back. I take him, I go to the casino. I said, tom, I'm going to buy your birthday present. I take out like a lot of money at the casino and I walk over to the sports book with him and I say, happy birthday. And I bet almost all of it on the Chicago White Sox in their game because he loves the White Sox. I take the rest of it and I do like socks. Run line, Sox first to three. He loves Murakami, the Japanese rookie. I go, murakami did a home run. So I got a pocket full of White Sox tickets. I go, these win. I'll give you half the money. He goes, oh, this is great. What a fun time. Are we going to watch it? I go, yep. There's a barbecue tonight at my neighbors. He's got a big TV he takes out for the big games. I'll ask him to take the TV out for the opposite of a big game. A mid July, mid July regular season AL Central game. We get to the barbecue later. TVs up on the wall. I got the game going. I go, tom, it's just, I got a seat right here for you. It's you and me and this tv and the kids are distracted and we're going to drink 100 beers. We're going to win this game, it's going to be incredible. We sit down, games about to start. Another guest comes up who I knew, I knew vaguely, and she goes, what wonderful luck. My mother is also here from out of town. Can she join you said? Of course, of course. If she wants to endure this, absolutely. Is she from Chicago? No, she is from the West African country of Mali. Great. She comes around the corner. She's, you know, elderly, just like my father in law. She's in a beautiful dress. She has a cane. I said, hi, welcome. She says, bon soir. That's right. She only speaks French.
Chad Millman
No way.
Simon Hunter
I go, bonjour. We sit down, and me and Big Tom and this lady watched the entire game, every pitch. And me and Tom had about 500 Miller lights, and we watched one of the most excruciating baseball games ever, ever recorded. It was tied halfway through the game. There were like 20 combined strikeouts. The Sox lost on, like, two excruciating errors and about 500 warning track fly balls, the last of which I was like, oh, my God, I'm in hell. And I looked at this lady and she was just going like she finally was getting. Why it was so painful. We lose all the money. It was horrific. We had a great time, though. Tom was very pleased. 13 hours later, after the game's over, the Sox play again. 12, 3 win. Murakami hits two fucking home runs on his bobblehead day with his his family in from Japan in the crowd. What could be easier than winning a baseball game? They said, so baseball batting continues to be a lifetime of endless pain that will never cease. Football needs to come back right away. Happy birthday, Tom. I'm out of here.
Chad Millman
As always, Matt Mitchell bringing the most charming betting stories to our very literate betting podcast. Let's give it up for Big Time. Happy birthday, Big Time. I feel bad for you. They've been rooting for the White Sox, but they got a little bit of something special going. I think they're turning around. Simon. We're going to bring in our guest. We're going to bring in Rich Rebar, who we bring in every year to do our quarterback rankings. He's a fantasy expert. He's a friend of the show. He's from Sharp Football Analysis. Rich, are you going to save us from ourselves today?
Rich Rebar
I don't know. I actually just realized I left a complete player off, so I don't think I am. I'm starting off already. So when we already get to. It's like, wait a second. I totally missed a, like a big blind spot. But, you know, you know, being, being where I'm at, you know, sad to see, you know, LeBron not come give one final ride. You know, I'm listening in the background. And I know every, every podcast is looking for their host review of the Odyssey at this point, you know, after two weeks.
Chad Millman
So listen, just tell me you're on my side and we'll continue to have a great show and it'll be fine.
Rich Rebar
No, I, I, I did, I enjoyed the movie. It was. If, if you were to tell me Christopher Nolan made an Odyssey movie, that's exactly what you got.
Chad Millman
Yes. You know what? Best analysis so far. Here's how we're going to do the show. This is how we do it every year, right? I'm going to go first. I'm probably going to make Simon sick to his stomach. Then Rich is going to go. Then Simon's going to go. We're going to go from 10 to 1. Some notes from last year. Rich warned us that C.J. stroud was likely to regress in 2025. He did. Simon is the only guy with Dak Prescott on his 2025 list. Well done, Simon. Chad, little too much faith in Jared Goff. Won't make that mistake again. Simon's best quote. Chad's list is painful to me. I will say that came right after Rich said my list wasn't too bad and we had a lot of overlap. And then Simon also said the last two years, I've been the only one to rank Hertz over Herbert. So far I look like a genius.
Matt Mitchell
Now. Do you remember why I said your list was painful, Chad, or. No, you black it out.
Chad Millman
I usually forget everything that's ever been critically said of me. I only live in a rose colored glasses world.
Matt Mitchell
So I had Stafford at number five, which you were killing me for, and you had Stafford not in your top 10. And that's why I was just like, I might have to throw out Chad's entire list. Not only did Stafford have a career year, he won the MVP last year, people. The year Chad left him off his
Chad Millman
top 10 list, well, I might have pulled a Rich and just forgot him. And then as soon as you said it, I'm like, oh, yeah, I remember that guy. That's good. See, but this year, so we got. The three of us have seven quarterbacks that appear in all three of our top 10 lists. Okay, so we'll go over them at the end. I don't know where everyone has them ranked in order. I spent a lot of time on my list. What I realized is that every single division had to me at least two quarterbacks who you could debate were worthy of being on the list, except for one, the NFC South. So that to me was really interesting. I'm going to start from the bottom. I had a really hard time with this, the sort of bottom two, 11 and 10, let's say, because Simon, we had Solak on the call on the show, Ben Solak from ESPN on the show and he talked about two rank two stats that he loves when he's analyzing quarterbacks. And it's EPA per drop back in success rate. Only a handful of quarterbacks are in the top 10 in both of those categories. And so I was really upset that one of the quarterbacks on that list I ultimately decided was going to be out of my top 10 and that was Brock Purdy. So I love Brock Purdy and for me it came down to Brock Purdy and Caleb Williams for number 10. No surprise. I went with Caleb Williams because here's. You know, Matt, in the intro I mentioned that we do this through a betting lens, right? And to me this is about projecting the quarterbacks, not necessarily who are going to have the best stats or could be the mvp. It's going to be the quarterbacks who we either are most upset that we bet against in the final two minutes of a game or that we are happiest that we bet on in the final two minutes of the game. And you could argue that Purdy and Caleb, both of them could, could qualify, I think because of the combination. I love Caleb with Ben Johnson. I think Ben Johnson is a dog and I don't think he's going to let Caleb regress. I think there's a lot of opportunities for improvement to build on the natural talent. Purdy I think is great. He was top four in qb, in EPA per drop back and in success rate last year. To me, it came down a little bit to talent around them and injuries. You know, Purdy has had some injury issues. So I want Caleb at number 10. He does not appear on all three of our lists. I don't know if he's on anyone else's list. At number nine, Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert. And Justin Herbert does appear on all of our lists. Any comments so far before I, before I move on?
Matt Mitchell
I think we're on the same boat where it's like that, that back end of Caleb, Purdy, Goff, Jordan, Love, Baker. It's, it's preference. It's all gonna be preference between all of us, right? These guys are all no real playoff Success totally. Not like superstars in any sense of the world. Right. And they're kind of all just mixed together there. So it's all about preferences. So it's like as much I want to knock your list. No, I agree with it. It's like you just said, I finally have Herbert back in my top 10. I'll explain my reasons why. And with Purdy, I left him out of my top 10 as well, just because it's just hard to get him over certain guys that we're talking about here where it's like, we know Brody has top 10 talent. If they, you know, if he wins two playoff games next year, he makes the conference championship game, I could easily see all of us having them, our top 10 next year. Right. Purdy has no doubt has a talent level. It's just, can he be consistent? And at the end of the day, that team is still a Christian McCaffrey team. So that's just, that's my view of it with Purdy right now.
Chad Millman
All right. At 8. Dak Prescott. I'm really high on the Cowboys this year. Simon, we've talked a lot about this. I think, I think their defense is going to be improved. I like what they did in the draft. I think just getting rid of Eberfluss and upgrading a defensive coordinator and their offense. To me last year, super impressed with Schottenheimer. 7. Jordan Love. I cannot find a reason to not have Jordan Love on this list. When I was doing my research yesterday, I came across a stat from Barnwell. Since the second half of 2023, you know, Jordan Love's rookie year and his first. Not rookie year, but first year starting. Jordan Love has the best QBR in the NFL. He has the fewest interceptions in the NFL among starting quarterbacks. So to me, I just love the guy. And I think with Matt LaFleur, it's a great combination. And you think about what he's done and how effective he's been, even when he hasn't had a ton of help at the receiver position. Jordan Love, top 10 for me. 6. Stafford. Projecting a little regression. Things went perfect. Too many concerns in 26 about what if he does get injured. Right. That was a concern for us last year.
T-Mobile Advertiser
Five.
Chad Millman
Five. Drake May does not appear on all three of our lists. Went back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. At the end of the day, it was hard for me not to have him in there given that I think their offensive line could be a little better, the running game could be a little better. AJ Brown could make Him a little better and he did a lot of stuff last year that like was beyond the norm given the level of talent and the situations that he was in. Forget about the schedule. Like he did it against NFL caliber talent. Four Burrow, three Mahomes. Two Lamar, one Josh Allen. It's interesting to me my top four guys, all of them are coming off some kind of not perfect year. But to me they're still the class of the NFL. So Rich, any feedback for me?
Rich Rebar
No, I like it. I think the list is you include Caleb. I knew you would. Yeah, I knew Caleb was going to get in there. At least for you.
Chad Millman
Yeah.
Rich Rebar
And like you said, you know, getting to 10, you know, 20. We don't have 32 good quarterbacks doing this job on the planet. But when you do have to cut it to 10, you do have to kind of. It is arbitrary. There are guys like I debated back and forth, you know, between Jordan. I was between Jordan Love. I had Trevor Lawrence in there but I totally forgot. So I accidentally just totally overlooked Drake May. Like I'm like why is Drake May not on my list? Like but he should be. So he is on my corrected list. I'm going to throw the producer for a curveball. But he, because he should be. I just don't know why blacked out and didn't have Drake May on the list.
Chad Millman
By the way, I'm not surprised. Like Simon and I have debated Drake May multiple times this offseason. Like you could say he's a top five quarterback. You could say he doesn't belong on the list. So if you would say he's not on the list, I wouldn't be surprised.
Rich Rebar
Yeah, I mean so I do mine a little bit different than you guys. I kind of look at it just like who do I think are going to be the best statistical quarterbacks in 2026? Like it's like a marriage of my fantasy hat. Plus like what we're doing right. Like just the isolated this year, you know what we're going to do. And, and I still think Drake May a guy they had that year too. And like you said, the offensive line is going to improve their move. Jarrett Wilson, you know, to center. They have actual outs now. If they need to move Campbell to out of left tackle at some point this year, if he ends up picks up where he left off in the playoffs, they've got guys that can jost around. And last year his number one wide receiver was on the field for 65% of the drop backs and they're going to have two full time players now, potential upgrades and A.J. brown and Romeo Dobbs. So I think that he's going to continue to propel forward. The strength, actually strength. The schedule is going to be a big sticking point this year. They're going to have to get, you know, perform against these teams now that they're not going to sneak up on and punt punch. They have to punch up this year. So that remains to be seen. So I actually do have him in here so I'm slotting him in but like you said, I was between all those guys then I ended up did getting Purdy in mine. I stuck him at 10 still just because I think he gets a little bit of the, the misnomer that he's like a product of Kyle Shanahan and I still think that's such a big misnomer because the last two years what he's dealt with in terms of what the 49ers have put on the field and for this guy to have the production that he's having, he creates so much more off script than any guy that Shanahan's had since RG3 and he's a way better passer than RG3 ever was. But I mean even last year Kittle misses six more games, Pierce all misses eight games, Juan Jennings misses two games, Brandon Ayuk obviously never showed up and Christian McCaffrey had the worst rushing season of his career and like you know, the guy still gets them into the playoffs and the defense was dead at that point the back half of the year. So I still think Purdy doesn't get enough credit. So he's, he made my 10. That's where I decided to stick at that arbitrary slot of like I'm putting this guy on the list because I at least want to vouch for him.
Chad Millman
Don't hate it. Look, if not for Caleb Williams I would have had him there but obviously there might be some bias involved there. Who's your nine?
Rich Rebar
Nine is where I have Jalen Hurts and it's really tough. I have a couple guys here where I don't know how much I want to penalize them, you know, based on last year. But I do believe that, you know, when we're looking at just like hurts coming into this season, it feels weird that he's at a fulcrum point. Right. Like a guy that's won a Super bowl, been to two, arguably is the best player in both Super Bowls that he's been in, just done nothing but win, was saddled with like this high school offense last year, you know, from Odysseus. But like I look at the moves that they've made this offseason. He loses A.J. brown, who is like a tailor made receiver for him. Like Jalen Hurts is a guy that wants to see the throw, to rip the throw. He doesn't play with a lot of anticipation. He's never played under center to be the first time in his career, you know, going back probably to pre high school and probably in high school he never played under center either. I'm assuming, you know, is he going to have like, is he going to gel with this system, the Sean Manion system? I'm a little bit concerned to a degree. There's so much collective talent for the Eagles. They're going to be a winning team. Like the defense is too good. The offensive line when healthy is good. Saquon Barkley still like they're going to win games. I just don't know if Jalen Hurts is going to deliver that like high end passing production and if he's going to even go back to running at this point. He kind of has talked about, you know, is. Is those like kind of days a little bit past him a little bit. So I do have Hurts there. Then I have Dak, then I have Drake, May. I still couldn't. I still couldn't put May over Stafford because even with some aggression, I still think the Rams are set up for Stafford to really cook. At least give us one more good run. Then the. I have Mahomes and Mahomes is another guy.
Chad Millman
Hold on, hold on. I just want Simon's quick take.
Rich Rebar
Oh, go.
Chad Millman
Because I didn't have hers on my list. He didn't make it, obviously. And Simon, who has been adamant that Herz is a top two quarterback at times. I don't want you to tell me if you have Hurts on your list. I just want to see if you have a strong opinion about what Rich has said about Jalen Hurts people.
Matt Mitchell
Go get your MVP bets on Hertz while you can. Chad did not living on his top 10 list. We know when Chad is putting in his top 10 list, you win MVP. So I was very happy. Chad, not gonna lie when you didn't have in your top 10. If you want to go back and listen, I want to plug our old show, but every year Chad has not had Hertz in his top 10. Since Hertz has been a starter,
Chad Millman
we
Matt Mitchell
have this weird rhythm where we're. Chad doesn't have them. He makes Super Bowl. Chad will have him that next year. We don't do anything. Chad will leave him off the following year, then we make the super bowl and then we know the history here. So, Chad, I appreciate it. You were a creature of habit and you stuck to your, your pattern.
Chad Millman
I'm the focal point. I'm, I'm, by the way, I'm kind of Zeus in this scenario. I'm the God who's controlling the Eagle's future. Rich, please continue.
Rich Rebar
Well, yeah, I mean, I, I mean, yeah, at five and man, I almost think like, he, you can make argument he should be lower this year. And I would love to get into this Mahomes conversation a little bit to.
Chad Millman
Wait, hold on.
Rich Rebar
Yeah, Mom's at five, who's at six? Stafford.
Chad Millman
Oh, okay.
Rich Rebar
But Mahomes was the toughest guy for me to rank because the way I do it, like I said, looking at this season in isolation, you know, he's coming off of the acl. I mean, we have now three years running. Are we going to keep just like chasing the cachet of like, Patrick Mahomes attached to Peak, Tyree Kill and Apex, Travis Kelsey? You know, everyone's like, oh, Matt Nagy's gone. Well, look, what did Eric Benny do that time? He was gone. Eric B. Enemy also had Peak Tyreek Hill and Peak Travis. Like, this intersection of talent. The Chiefs decided to really just address defense this year. They were like, hey, because look, and I get it, like, if I had a talent like Patrick Mahomes, I probably would have built my roster with a little hubris too. And it, you know, they got away with it the year before, right, when they won all those, they had all those comeback wins. But the offense has been pretty bad for three years. Like, it's been, it's, it's been a, it's a mediocre to below average offense. And this year, the only change that they've made on offense wholesale is adding Kenneth Walker. They've decided to just throw all their equity and free agency in the draft in the defense. They sell players that can't get open and beat man coverage in this Vic Fangio quarters meta, teams are approaching playing the Kansas City Chiefs with man coverage at higher rates than anyone else because they don't respect any of the weapons that they have. They have no guys that can create on their own. And they've put all this onus on Patrick Mahomes over the past three years. This isn't a one year thing, it's not a two year thing. This is a three year thing. He's 17th in the NFL and completion rate he's 20 thirds in yards or pass attempt. He's 20th in touchdown rate and he's 20th in interception rate. But he's Patrick Mahomes, right? Like, it's like so, like it's, he is the hardest guy for me to right now slot based on the way I do this. Like, it's like thinking about it in isolation. They didn't add, they didn't give him any weapons and he's coming off the ACL like. And what's funny is, you know, Andy Reid, who's going to moonwalk into the hall of Fame, you look at all the easy buttons, what NFL coaches are doing right now. He's also not doing any of those things. It's really weird the, like the level of hubris the Chiefs have operated at.
Chad Millman
You sound like Matt Mitchell. Who's your. So who's four?
Rich Rebar
I have Herbert. The what? You know, I'm the lone Herbert, you know, stock buyer on this, on this program. And I have been forever. I mean just, I think this, when you look at just coming into this year, the marriage of Mike McDaniel, anytime a Shanahan system coordinator play caller has had a guy with any level of talent at the quarterback position, these guys absolutely wreck. I mean, they've turned water into wine out of guys like Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Greasy, Matt Shaw, Derek Carr, Sam Darnold, won a Super bowl last year. Guys like Kirk Cousins. Tua Tua has a higher touchdown rate the past three years than Patrick Mahomes, all three years individually. So, I mean, I think that this is going to be the best statistical season that Herbert has had. And he had a really good year too. So I'm, I think he's in contention for MVP this year, which I know no one else will agree with. But then I've got Lamar and Joe Burrow, Josh Allen to round it up.
Chad Millman
All right, well, look, there's a lot to debate here. I love Herbert. I actually sometimes I grade him down just because I know Simon hates Herbert. Chad Millman
All right Simon, let's rock and roll. Starting from number 10.
Matt Mitchell
Well, first of all my in what world do I hate Herbert? I gave I was the only person in all of media give him out rookie of the year 21 when everyone else is all over Joe Burrow into a also had him ranked above to it in the draft that year. I'm just someone that wants someone to have pledge success and I hate like you guys both had Josh Allen as your number one player, correct?
Chad Millman
Yes. Yes.
Matt Mitchell
Josh Allen. This will be his ninth season in the NFL. So I just, I don't get it.
Rich Rebar
I mean, since he entered the NFL, the only guys at more playoff wins than him are Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. Like he just didn't beat those guys.
Matt Mitchell
I mean Josh Allen beating up bad teams in the wild card round, he's good at it. I, no one's doubting that. I just don't think he's number one playing NFL. I'm just, I'm shocked you guys are in on it. Everyone's drinking the Kool Aid where it's like, why do we play these games? What, what's the point of it? So yeah, it's, it's tough doing.
Chad Millman
Here's what's interesting that I, I, I don't disagree with you, Simon. Like, look, part of my Josh Allen at number one is a little bit consensus. Like when I was doing the research, everybody put Josh Allen at number one. And it's, it's weird to say this, but I do think there's a little bit of like people are doing it because Josh Allen is Josh Allen and he's awesome and he can sort of do superhero things. But you're not going to put Lamar because Lamar has a new coach and he's had some injury issues. You're not going to put Mahomes because he is coming off the acl. You're not going to put Burrow because he's always coming off an injury and, and the offensive line is suspect, but even if it's not, he holds the ball too long. So like there's a little bit of Josh Allen by default here to me. And I know you look at it differently, so that's why I'm excited to get to your list. I don't know what your list is, so let's get it from 10 to 1 here because I'm excited to see where you land with 10.
Matt Mitchell
Yeah, I just, and again, it's just like we always say, these lists are tough to do. I just was shocked to see you both at Allen where it's like, my God, I Get it? He's the best player in football. He's, he's, he's literally was he 65235? He never gets hurt. He's incredible. He's a freak. No one's doubting that. But he doesn't win the game that matters the most. He just every time you can say it's his defense as fault, blah, blah, but it's, it's just tough to have him at number one. So I was with you chatted ten with Caleb Williams. I just looking at this list, fighting through all the guys like I really love golf obviously I love, love what you know, what these teams have done and surrounding these players and Jordan love great player and that didn't make my top 10. I know he's got all the stats but it's like when I think about comparing him in Caleb, Caleb in those clutch moments in those fourth quarters in that playoff game, he showed up. When you go through that entire season last year, the fourth quarter, yeah, it could be ugly. For three quarters Caleb kept showing up so I had to put him at 10. It's just like this kid in his, what I consider his rookie year because his first year with Ben Johnson, it feels like he super exceeded anything I could have ever projected. And if he keeps on his trajectory, we all could be sitting here next year and all have us and have him in our top three. Like that's where Caleb's projector right now, right? He has incredible offense with a questionable defense so he could put up incredible numbers. Was he 50 yards short of 4,000 yards passing last year, Chad? So yeah, I think Bears fans know they got a home run there and yeah, put him at number 10, number 9. I did finally sneak Herbert back into my top 10 as a huge Herbert hater. I, I had to give him props. Just the fact that the offensive line was so banged up and he kept finding ways. Now you could say, you know, some of those games run against the best competition. That's true. And even like the ugly games where he was, you know, had a broken hand and it was just making it all work, he kept finding a way and that's what I've always wanted from Herbert. Now laid another egg in the playoffs. So that's why I didn't have him any higher. I think nine was very generous to him just because same boat as these other guys. This is what year eight year, year nine for him in this league and he's got zero playoff wins. Tim Tebow has a playoff win, right? Tim Tebow found a way, something Herbert's not able to do in his career. So that's just my issue where it's like, yes, looks good in shorts, throwing deep balls in practice. Looks incredible on Sundays. Padded up and getting through the hits looks terrible in January. That's. That's why I couldn't move Herbert up higher on my list. Shocker. Probably my biggest shocker on this list. Chad Baker at number eight. I can't quit him. I just, I think back to me and you during the regular season, how much we were in love with Baker, giving them MVP love for the first four or five weeks. And I don't know if you watched the TV show on Netflix, Chad, but he's talked about the injury. This man was playing through multiple injuries. And, you know, as much as we love Baker, that's been his Achilles heels. That's why he's no longer on the Browns. Right? Tried to play through injuries, and that's cost him his career in the Browns. And now the Bucks are a little weird of giving him money because it's like this guy's a body sticking social abuse are really about to pay him whatever, 150 million over three years. I just. I just love Baker. He's just everything I look for in a quarterback, A gamer, a guy that just doesn't give up, plays through injuries. And yeah, I had him number eight.
Chad Millman
Rich. Rich Simon, Let me interrupt you for a second. I had, when I mentioned that every division had two guys you could argue are worthy of being on the top 10 list, except for the NFC South. Baker was the guy I was thinking about in the NFC south as the one. And like, to me, he was sort of, you know, Trevor Lawrence, Baker, 12, 13, Jalen was there. Like, I couldn't put Baker on because as much as I don't want to bet against Baker and I like betting on Baker, and again, this is my perspective for all this. I don't know if I have enough faith in what the talent is around him that it's going to make a difference. And the fact that he's a little guy and he plays all out and he gets injured a lot. So that's why I left him off the list. Rich, you didn't have him on the list, and I'm curious why.
Rich Rebar
Yeah, I have him right in that same bucket of guys. I mean, I wouldn't push back like really, if you, if you include in the list. But like that same, like Purdy, Lawrence, Jordan, love zone, right? Like, this is a guy that's clearly good enough at playing the position. Maybe you can argue, like, needs some more help around him, and maybe, like, that's why he doesn't punch up. But this is a guy it's super fun to root for. He's. He's another one of these guys that gut stuff out, you know, Basically played with, what, an oblique, a knee injury, a shoulder injury, all the back half of last year. I'm actually high on the. The Bucks this year. Being a team that is actually really strong, I think Baker's actually going to have a really strong year as well. I think they're set up a lot like a couple, like the Lions from a few years ago, where the. The Lions have all the good offensive pieces, the offensive lines coming back healthy, the defense has an awesome front seven, but they have, like, a really weak secondary, so they're probably going to play in, like, a lot of fun games that drive statistics back up a little bit. And then, you know, getting Zach Robinson, who, I believe, people we didn't get to see Zach Robinson, I believe, call games the way he intended to going to Atlanta, because first year, he got Kirk Cousins coming off the Achilles, and Kirk Cousins couldn't move or play under center. And then, you know, you thrust Michael Penck into the lineup, a guy who doesn't really fit kind of like that system either, because, remember, they didn't have Michael Penck on the roster when he took that job. So I do think we'll see Zach Robinson, who was there when Baker Mayfield toured through The Liam Cohen 22 Rams building, do a lot more of the things that Liam Cohen was doing with Baker, you know, two years ago.
Chad Millman
All right, Simon. I don't hate Baker.
Matt Mitchell
Yeah, yeah. Again, it's really tough like we talked about. And. And I. I do give Baker a little bit of love because, like you just said, Liam Cohen left. Now we're stuck with, you know, Todd Bowles running their show, and he.
Simon Hunter
He's.
Matt Mitchell
They paid for it last year. Right. That eight and nine finish, I really do think that reflect on the head coach. So, yeah, to number seven after Baker, I got Dak. I didn't move him up or down from last year. Like, I just had held the spot. Where, you know, my list really is based off past performances. Yes, I'm projecting forward, but it's really about what you've done for me in the past. And we go through Dak's career. Has he had the playoff success? Not really. I mean, he ended, obviously, Tom Brady's career. That was his big one playoff win, went to the Bucks and won on the road and that was Tom Brady's final game. Other than that, though, I mean, Dak, to me, he just makes these plays in the regular season where it's like, you can't deny it. This guy is a top 10 talent. His greatest pickings of CD Lamb is. We talk all the time. The NFL is filled with talent. These teams have a ton of talent. It's all up to quarterback to really execute those game plans. And you know that last year, that offense, think how many games he carried them in. Their defense just kept letting them down. So it's nice to see all of us are in unison here on Dak this year, where last year I got. We guys left him off, right? He's coming off an injury. It's kind of hard to have in the back of your mind after those type of seasons where it's like, he didn't play since whatever that was week five or six this year. It just. It makes sense, right? He did so well last year. I think we're all on the same page that Dak deserves to be in the top 10.
Chad Millman
Simon Dak led the league in throwing into tight windows.
Simon Hunter
Yeah.
Matt Mitchell
Stud number six, same as last year. Joe Burrow took a lot of heat last year for it because I had Stafford above him. My reasoning does not change. Same exact. It was the last year, right. Stafford has done more in his career. He's proven more. And as much as you want to say is he's gonna get hurt, whatever, like that. Joe Burrow has the same exact boat. Joe Burrow has weird injuries consistently. And you can try to blame his offensive line. We. We have the data. It's not all on his offensive line. Joe has a bunch of bad habits because he did have bad offensive lines when he came in the league. So hold on to the ball too long, trying to turn too many big plays. When you just take the sack, you just take. You just fall on the ball, right? You live for the next down. I think he's gonna. He's talked about this offseason. He's gonna try to grow from that and stop taking stupid hits. And, you know, Joe Flacco has apparently been in his ear about it, just being smarter with the ball and trusting his offensive line. So, you know, this is. I think people are starting to come around a little bit to my side. The Joe Burrow argument, right? A lot of people always pencil him as a top three, three, top four type of guy. I think more people are being like, Joe, you got to be on the field, you got to be available. We all Know the talents there. You have T. Higgins, Jamar Chase. Two premier receivers this season. We've talked about Chad. There feels like there's no excuse. I am very high on the Spangles team. So, yeah, number six comes in for Joe Bro. Number five, Lamar. I. I love Lamar. I know people are gonna get upset about me having so low. It's the same argument with Josh Allen. It's like, what are the excuses? This is year eight or nine. You've never been to a Super Bowl. You want to talk about great teams. I've. I've beaten people over the head with this Lamar. That Lamar in 2023 against the Chiefs in the playoffs, laid a total egg. He had the fifth best DVOA team in the history of dvoa. Like, I can't get to how big of a deal that is to nerds like me. When you look at the data where it's like every other team in that list in the top 10, about 80 of them won Super Bowls. So he's the rare thing where, you know, we can knock Mahomes because my home does score touchdowns. Mahomes could throw for one touchdown. Two picks in that game finds a way to win. Lamar can't for some reason. That's why I have him at number five. Where none of us down to talent. But he hasn't played the playoffs three of the last five years. And that's because of injury and missing the playoffs. We all know that. But still, that's a damning stat. Like him and Joe Burn that same boat. They have not played in the playoffs three of the last five years. So the respect of having him in the top five, I think all of us shows how much respect we have. A little more on the talent level. Eventually it's got to come together and this year it's really gonna be a true test.
Simon Hunter
Right?
Matt Mitchell
The new head coach gonna be a great defense offensively. I have question about their offensive line, but it feels like it's all there for a little more. So we all saw them in our top five.
Chad Millman
I like about your list so far. Simon is
Simon Hunter
Rich.
Chad Millman
I'm gonna criticize you and me both here. Like I said earlier, we've defaulted a little bit to the names and Rich made the point with Mahomes. Like, what are you gonna do? His stats the last 3 years are not extraordinary, but it's Patrick Mahomes and I think I didn't have the courage to say, move, burrow down. Move Lamar down. Like, I made my list yesterday. I'm like, what kind of doesn't put Lamar Jackson in the top three. Like a courageous. Doesn't put Lamar Jackson in the top three. Someone who's forward looking, someone who's looking ahead to what the season is going to be. Even though you're saying it's based on past performance, you're lying to yourself because your list isn't based on past performance, because your list is based on how you're projecting players, which I like. Simon, I'm giving you a compliment. I like it. I like it a lot.
Matt Mitchell
It is. But that's what projecting from the past to the future, right? That's, that's part of what we look into all these numbers for. Right? That's why we dive into past seasons and all this other bull crap because it does matter. These, it's all different data points. But Josh Allen, be quick. I haven't Josh Allen, number four. I know it's kind of a shocker, but I've kind of made my point. No one doubts this is the best player in football, the biggest athlete. He is incredible to watch. We are so blessed that he has been healthy and playing consistently. Got to get over the hump and they've catered to him right now with Joe Brady. They got rid of a coach before McDermott that he needed to tap him on the shoulder and stand up to him. Before that, Denver at halftime, when Josh lost that ball of 13 seconds, I think McDermott knew if we don't win this game, I'm being fired. Because that was as a head coach, that's inexcusable. And Josh Allen owned that because he is a great man. But that's on the coach. That's where you need someone in your life to step in and be like, listen, we can live for half rather than giving them a free three points in a game that it's going to come down to three points. And that's exactly what happened. So no one's doubting Josh Allen's talent. I, I pain me to put him at number four, but I, I'll go through my, my top three. I just couldn't find a reason to put him over these guys who have had playoff success. And number three, I bumped him down. My man Jalen hurts Adam at number two Last year he had to be dropped down, right? They, they struggled last year. No excuse for him. They should have been at least a two or one seed. And Sirianni did see everyone sit everyone in the final week of the season. That's why they can say they didn't get the two seed. But I look at Jalen hurts season last year and so impressed. Where the offensive line after they lost Lane Johnson, they were the 29th ranked offensive line in the NFL. But yet Hertz found a way that final 10 weeks of the season to get them into the playoffs. While other teams after the super bowl hangover fall off a cliff, they still found a way. And as much as you want to say, well, he's surrounded by a ton of talent who, what teams aren't? That's my whole point of beating these people over the heads. Where it's like you think Stafford's not surrounded by Devonte Adams and Puka in a great run game and Sean McVeigh. Like you think Hertz would struggle in that exact system. I think we had on Seth Wickersham, who, you know, one of the smarter minds. He had golfed ranked above Dakota. And I don't want to give Seth too much crap, but if dak had Sean McVay and then Ben Johnson, who's having a better career? Dak or you know, golf? So I do think coaching matters when you talk about Hertz, because Hertz, he's never had the same offense we were talking. He's going to be in a new offense this year. So what this man has done where every year he has a new oc where Mahomes has consistent offensive coordinator every year, I mean Josh Allen, with Joe Brady, they've catered their offense to him over these last couple years. Hertz is in a weird position where they're not catering this offense to him. They're saying you need to learn this new offense. So I agree. We're going to learn a lot about Hertz this upcoming season, but I think he'll adjust to it. He's just a winner. He does what he needs to do to win. And last year you had all this drama with AJ and all this other crap going on. This man still found a way to potentially become the two seed and find a way to the playoffs. And obviously they fell apart in the playoffs, right? That's what they do. They either make the super bowl or they get knocked out on wild card weekend. But yeah, I end up having him number three, number two, Stafford. I just, I love him so much.
Chad Millman
Wow.
Matt Mitchell
I know. Had him at 5 last year. Took a lot of heat from the fans. I was way too high on them. It's. I, I can't quit Stafford. I really can't. I know last year's coming up MV MVP season. I see nothing to change here. I know injuries can happen, happen to Anybody. I don't want to base that ranking off where it's like projecting out this season. We're all in agreeance. It's all there for Stafford. Like even if he throws 10 less touchdowns, I think that's just. McVeigh is not going to be chasing MVP for him. I think McVay who likes to run the ball in the red zone, he'll happily take those 10 touchdowns a way to run it. It's just safer. It's McVay's style and system. So as much as I think he'll digress in those numbers, the one seed, all that is for the taking here with Stafford. So I had him at number two. Chad, I'm shocked that. Do you hate that or is it just a shocking player to you?
Chad Millman
Shocking play feels uncharacteristically retrospective. I get what you're saying. Like you, like you think it's all laid out. And Rich said the same thing. It's all laid out for him to dominate this year. And look, Tom Brady had five great years after he was the age Matt Stafford is now in New England. So I'm not arguing that he can be great. I just feel like he's a little bit more injury prone than Tom Brady was and there's still questions about the pressure up the middle for the Rams. And so I just worry he's not going to be as available. Last year might have been sort of
Matt Mitchell
peak Stafford and number one, Drake May. Now what? You know who number one is?
Chad Millman
Patrick, I actually wrote down Mahomes before you did it. And then I'm like, Drake May. Are you kidding me?
Matt Mitchell
No. And this is my. This will be. I'll give my first. I'll give my pushback and I haven't Drake made my top 10 then because I know Patriots fans are gonna lose their minds and think I'm a hater. It's one season. It is one season and it's a one season where yes, he was great in the regular season. He struggled mightily once he saw good defenses in the playoffs. And you can say, well, that's because of the line or the town he has around him. That same town around him almost got him mvp. And you could say with the. The offensive line did regress. Totally agree. But when I watched him play, I saw a lot of 50, 50 balls that were successful to Matt Collins and Stefan Diggs. I saw a young kid that pulled it down and scrambled about 40 yards, 50 yards per game, which is incredible. We know in this league that doesn't last long right. One bad hit is going to change that tune. So I am all for having Drake May in my top 10 next year. If he produces even semi close to what the season he just had. If he throws for 32 touchdowns and over 3,500 yards against that schedule next year or this year, I'll have him at the top 10. Like there's no doubting the talent there. I am just heavily skeptical and I hate how quick we are to move these people up where, you know, as great of a season as he just had, Chad hasn't ranked higher than Jalen Hurts did after he went to a Super bowl and almost outplayed Patrick Mahomes and was a runner up to MVP as well. So it's just, I think we all just love Drake May right now. Is that not fair to say? Boys, we all just are in love with the prospect of Drake Vibe coding

in my top 13. Like I had guys above. That's a great point. So yeah, my home stake I think you guys already know right? It's what. What can we do? The man has so many super bowl rings. It's just I. I get it. The stats have not backed it up. I think he just. He's a chameleon. He evolves and just shapes to what he needs to be for this team and he Talked about he needs to start using his legs less. Right. That's a big thing he's talked about. They wouldn't got Kenneth Walker. K9 and Kenneth Walker. I don't know if you saw the photos. Chad, he is jacked right now. He is ready for this season. I think that's gonna be a huge difference maker. They have not a running back like that in his career. Like that's going to be a huge difference. In Rasheed Rice and Worthy. It's on them. I don't really think this is all Mahomes. Like Rich has laid it out for you. These guys aren't getting separation. That's on these talented receivers like Worthy. They drafted him for speed and separation. He's let them down that aspect. So I'm excited to see what they're going to be this season. I think Mahomes the numbers will improve not only compared to they were last year. I think last year was just a season from hell. What were they? One in nine and one score games. Yeah, that's not my home's like right. The previous year I think they were like 10 and one in one score game. So I think there's a happy medium there. And I, I get the doubt with. With Mahomes their first time and I think any of our lives we've had any doubt with Mahomes. I'm just not going to budge yet. Right. I need him. If he misses the playoff again this year then I start to doubt and move that because we saw Tom Brady, he did have that nine year period right where they weren't going to Super Bowls. They couldn't get past the conference championship game. So are we hitting that dead period in Mahomes? If we are, Al will adjust because we all know like Josh Allen, these other guys, Stafford, they are in my opinion better at the quarterback position than Mahomes is right now. Are they better at winning the game that matters the most? No. Like that just in the playoffs when everyone's sphincter super tight, that's when he wins. It could be 16 to 10, could be 22 to 13. Mahomes just finds a way when it's ugly and cold out. So I couldn't budge him. Chad still have my home as my number one guy.
Chad Millman
Aspecter says what I mean. You want to talk about a great movie? Fuck that Odyssey bullshit. Give me a Little Wayne's World. All right, here's who's on our list collectively. Herbert Dak, Prescott Stafford, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Simon had Baker Mayfield. Rich and I did not. Simon and I had Caleb Williams. Rich did not. Rich and I had Drake May. Simon did not. I think we can all agree, like, there is a consensus top 13. And after that it's a jumble and like maybe 9 to 13 is where there's a little bit of a mess. Rich, final word before we get out of here. No.
Rich Rebar
It's always fun coming out with you guys and talking about this, you know, triggering the masses. I love how we all approach it differently too, you know? You know, but in my opinion, like, football is hard. Like, it's hard to just put like the onus on like one of these guys winning or carrying. Like, we, we brought up Brady and like their law, like football, man, you need a lot that to go right around you to, to win, to win games. It's. It's hard, man. So it's like, you know, I look at some of these guys and I'm like, ah, man, playing. Playing this position is so ludicrous. And, and for all of us, like, you know, armchair watch. But if you even at low level have played like quarterback with like any type of pass rush and just understand the degree of difficulty like these guys operate at like this position, it's just absolutely insane. They're able to even do what they're able to do.
Chad Millman

This episode of Sharp or Square dives into the always-controversial topic of ranking the top 10 NFL quarterbacks heading into the 2026 season. Host Chad Millman is joined by co-host Simon Hunter and recurring guest Rich Rebar (Sharp Football Analysis) for a spirited, data-driven, and occasionally personal debate about who belongs in the upper tier of NFL QBs—using both betting and football analytic perspectives. The conversation covers not just stats but also intangibles, playoff performances, injury risks, and the optics of "clutch" quarterbacking, all through the lens of projecting success for the upcoming season.

Consensus Near Misses / Debate Zone: Brock Purdy, Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts (varied placement).
As always, the discussion walks the line between sharp analysis and friendly ribbing. The banter is lively, sometimes irreverent (Chad: "I'm kind of Zeus in this scenario"), and each host brings both humility and defensiveness to their picking process.
Absolutely—this episode is a must-listen for anyone prepping for fantasy, betting futures, or just arguing QBs at the bar. The panel’s explanations go deep on analytics but stay accessible, with plenty of references to recent seasons, coaching changes, and playoff heartbreaks. Even if you’re not a “wise guy,” you’ll appreciate the mix of stats, eye test, and betting logic.
The episode underscores two persistent truths about ranking quarterbacks: the razor-thin margins separating the elite, and how luck, coaching, supporting cast, and even panelist philosophy all shift the pecking order. It’s a fascinating snapshot of league consensus and individual conviction going into the 2026 NFL season.
Next up: The NFC South betting preview, and the crew promises even more heated debate.
