Podcast Host/Announcer
The following podcast is a Dear media production.
Host/Producer
This week on she's so Lucky. I'm sitting down with Hunter Harris and Peyton Dix, co host of the pop culture podcast. Let me say this, and let me say these ladies know how to create their own luck. As writers and media personalities, they're masters at telling compelling stories that make you laugh, think, and have something to take to the group chat. And as best friends and business partners, they know what it takes to build, pause, rebuild, and keep the creative inspiration flowing. Today's episode unpacks the media and pop culture moments that helped us create our own luck and the creative pivots we've all made along the way.
Interviewer/Host
Welcome to she's so Lucky.
Peyton Dicks
Thank you for having us. Oh, my God, I'm feeling lucky today
Interviewer/Host
to have you both.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, you are lucky to be in company with you.
Interviewer/Host
Oh, thank you.
Podcast Host/Announcer
You like that?
Peyton Dicks
I'm flirting already. Starting up flirting.
Hunter Harris
I mean, this is so that Miley Ariana video for the Backyard Sessions.
Interviewer/Host
If you're familiar as a Leo, I know you're also a Leo. Flattery always works. So this is.
Hunter Harris
I'm trained.
Interviewer/Host
I know.
Peyton Dicks
I know what they need. I know what they want. Is your Venus Leo, too?
Interviewer/Host
No, my Venus is Libra.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, love.
Hunter Harris
Oh, I think my Venus is Libra, too. Oh, that's. I think so.
Peyton Dicks
Yours might be different, but that's fabulous. That's where it wants to be. If that's true.
Interviewer/Host
I don't know.
Hunter Harris
You all seem, like, at home.
Interviewer/Host
Because Libra's ruled by people.
Peyton Dicks
Taurus and Libra specifically are like, really? I'm a Taurus?
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Host/Producer
You're a Taurus?
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
If any lesbian is watching. I'm a Taurus, by the way. But, yeah. Okay, so we're all lovers. Okay.
Hunter Harris
I was saying that.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. I would love to start off by hearing about a time each of you recently felt lucky and what that was.
Hunter Harris
Ooh, you're actually being a great day. I felt lucky last night. Yes, yes, yes. We were on what Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and I. I mean, I don't get, like, so nervous, but yesterday I just felt, like, really in my body, ready for just, like, hanging out with my friend on camera.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
And I really. I honestly had so much fun. Just, like, us, like, whispering back and forth, like, little things to each other. Yeah, it was really.
Peyton Dicks
It was really cool. And we have. I don't know, I feel like lately we've just been on this, like, really sweet run. We're acting like we need, like, a poster to announce. I don't know of being like. It is really cool to call what my problems are. My problems are right now and different in different parts of my life, I'll tell you that. But right now, it's like, oh, I get to build this thing that doesn't feel like a brand, but just a deeper friendship and camaraderie and silly, sweet, fun relationship with a friend and also his work. How cool is that? And now we get to drink with Andy Cohen, too.
Interviewer/Host
Kind of a dream come true for times like these. Wait, Pete. And I love the way you phrase that, though, that you get to call your current problems your problems. Like, they're good problems to have. And I think sometimes that's perspective that we can lose, because even when we get things that we've been working for that we want, like, everything comes with its own friction, challenges, whatever. When you're like, oh, but the challenges are also good, too, because this is part of what I've been working towards. Yeah, it's such a good perspective.
Peyton Dicks
Totally. It's like, because, you know when you're tired for things you don't want to be doing, and it feels so much more exhausting and difficult on your body,
Hunter Harris
that's when I get an attitude.
Interviewer/Host
That's the biggest attitude.
Hunter Harris
I'm like, I'm tired. I shouldn't even beat tired right now.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, see, I knew I didn't want
Interviewer/Host
to come here, like, exactly.
Hunter Harris
And I've known it all day that I'm gonna be mad, but. No, I really feel that. And I think. I mean, a lot of the things that we do are work and do feel like work in this, like, kind of industry where I would be, like, watching Love Island USA anyway. But then sometimes I'm, like, gunned in my head. I have to get through these episodes. But still, I feel like, oh, I'm so much more grateful. This is, like, everything I've ever wanted is to, like, have these problems, to be making something with someone that I love, to really feel a level of, like, I don't know, confidence and. Yeah, that's really nice.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Host/Producer
So good.
Hunter Harris
So good.
Interviewer/Host
I actually never really get to talk about pop culture on this show, which is why I was so excited to have the two of you.
Peyton Dicks
How much time do you have for you?
Interviewer/Host
We have all episodes to get into this, but I would actually love to start off by hearing from each of you, if you can remember the first piece of media that really had you in a chokehold and that made you want to do the work that you do.
Hunter Harris
Ooh.
Peyton Dicks
I Went back to my law school. And you want to find out, by the way, if you want to find out what it is, But I'm going to think about something else.
Hunter Harris
Okay. I kind of have two answers. They're both very, very different. The first one is that when I was little, I was obsessed with Patti LaBelle. I wanted to be Patti LaBelle. I would, like, perform on the fireplace, Patti LaBelle songs. And that was my first taste of, like, oh, I like, love older women. I love divas. I love aunties. And I wanted to be a musician and, like, singer, dancer, actress, whatever, and then quickly realized, like, actually I just want to be a writer. But I think a lot of my taste shows up through, like, me being an auntie and me being like a Whitney Houston Stan for second and third.
Peyton Dicks
And an example of that, if you're wondering, for the folks at home, even yesterday, Hunter got this drink and I got a mule kind of by accident, and it was gross. And I was like, can I try yours? And I tried it, and I was like, oh, can I get that? Hunter goes, see, that's why I told you. You want to get. I said, What? You are 65, and that's how I treat you, right? I know that you. I know you're gonna want this.
Hunter Harris
I said, girl, come on, take this.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Come on.
Interviewer/Host
I told you, like, I got something
Hunter Harris
in my purse for you.
Peyton Dicks
Just keep mine, girl. That's gonna be yours. It was so. And I'm so, baby, that I love being taken care of.
Interviewer/Host
It's like the perfect balance.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Yes.
Hunter Harris
My other answer is I was upset, obsessed with Pirates of the Caribbean, the movie. When I was young, I would, like, watch the director's commentary, and I'd be like, wow, guess what? I'm learning stuff. I'm taking notes, but like, oh, that's cgi and that's called a dolly.
Peyton Dicks
And that.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, that was that. I mean, that's like a lot of how, like, I learned about, you know, watching movies and TV and how stuff gets made. It's just like by watching DVD commentary growing up.
Peyton Dicks
And five, six, seven, eight. You best start believing in ghost stories, Ms. Turner.
Hunter Harris
You're in one.
Peyton Dicks
Thank you. And thank you. And that's. Yeah, that's for real. I actually. I feel like the thing that I just go back to, and I hope it doesn't sound like a cop out answer, but it won't be shocking. That's so, like, motherfucking Raven is like, when I think about the way she dressed, the amount of space she took up, how Low key. Like Queer Coded, she seemed on the show. And now Law Twist is talking to who? No one. But I think that so much of her, like, big personality. Granted, I do come from a line of women that are, like, really loud in general, but I think watching her be exactly who she is on that show allowed me to be as annoying as I was as a young adult, current adult, preteen, all the things. But yeah. And I think it, like, kind of brought me into my own personhood. And I think so much of the writing I do, the work that I do, this podcast is just extensions of myself. Like, I feel like when people ask what I do, I like, totally identify as, like, a storyteller and performer in general. And I think that that is only because I just have too much personality. And I'm like, so where do I put it? And, like, it's kind of found a form of, like, writing and performing or, like, comedy and this podcast. And I think, like, Raven taught me how to just be, like, a fuller person. That's so deep to say about that. So Raven made me.
Interviewer/Host
No, but I think that's exactly right.
Hunter Harris
And I think the way that, like, Raven in my mind was like, the first multi hyphenate on, like, to me or for sure. Guess what she sings, Guess what she acts. Guess what she was like also on the Cosby show when she was younger. Like, she really could, as a black girl, do it all. It was like the first, like, Keke Palmer, you know, like that kind of, like, earlier iteration, which is, I think, really important to see.
Peyton Dicks
And like, this might sound like, hopefully not, but this might sound backhanded, but she just did so much with her face that allowed me to stop being so concerned about feeling pretty all the time. Like, she was like a total freak sometimes. And I was like, oh, that's like, how I feel most of the time. Also a baddie, obviously, but the physical
Hunter Harris
comedy of that show too. She's like a comedic genius for sure.
Interviewer/Host
And to be that young, doing as a teenager, the way that she was showing up and performing every episode. Full body.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Like, was incredible.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
She must have stretched before shooting. Truly. Because Crazy. Truly.
Interviewer/Host
Wait, what I love about both of your answers. This is something that I talk about with my friends a lot. Bring back divas, you know what I mean?
Hunter Harris
And you got three right here.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, two Leos. Oh, well, here we go. Yeah, we actually just did a. Did it come up, the divas episode? I don't know if it came out yet.
Hunter Harris
Oh, no, it hasn't come out yet.
Peyton Dicks
But we did like a whole episode dedicated to just talking about, like, what makes a diva. And like, who is like, can I ask you?
Hunter Harris
Flip it.
Peyton Dicks
We're doing the interview now. Like, do you think we have a lot of present day divas?
Interviewer/Host
I don't think we do. I don't think that the current social climate allows divas to be in their full form. Because the thing about a diva, it's like you got to take the good with the. The maybe not so savory. It's like they're going to show up, they're going to be big personality, big talent. And also with that, you might get a little bit of demanding. You might get somebody flipping, flipping something and you got to take both with it. And I do think currently in our social climate, we're so quick cancel or punish people for any bit of, like, unsavory behavior. But that's part of what comes with it.
Peyton Dicks
Especially being a black woman. You have to be like, nice all the time. And like. Yeah, sometimes, like a diva doesn't always.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. They want shit done a certain way.
Hunter Harris
And I think too, it's all about, like performing your own, like, relatability. And it's at some point it's like you and maybe live a totally different life.
Interviewer/Host
Okay.
Hunter Harris
Like, that's what a diva's gonna tell you straight up.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
I mean, I don't relate to Patti LaBelle and that's why we love her. I don't, I don't necessarily relate to Mariah Carey because she's like Mariah Carey and all of her bigness or whatever.
Peyton Dicks
Whatever.
Interviewer/Host
Insert diva here. Yeah, they're divas because they're not relatable.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And this obsession with relatability, I think has like, watered down people's abilities, personalities.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, but not us, though.
Peyton Dicks
No. We teach women to shrink themselves. Not anymore.
Interviewer/Host
We're bringing it back. Not today.
Peyton Dicks
Not in this space.
Interviewer/Host
No, absolutely. Absolutely not.
Host/Producer
So let's talk about my morning routine for a second. Between everything I take for energy, skin, gut, health, immunity, there was a lot to keep track of. And I used to think it was just the price of feeling good. Until I started. I am eight. This habit has stuck. It's genuinely a part of my morning routine at this point. And on the days I skip it, I feel the difference. I am eight. Took 16 supplements covering nine major organ systems and put them into one drink. So instead of adding another thing to my routine, it actually simply simplified it. One scoop once a day, and I know I'm covering a huge amount of ground. And it's not just convenient, it's backed by real science. Im8 was co founded by David Beckham and built with leading doctors and researchers. In a 12 week clinical trial through the San Francisco Research Institute, 95% of people who tried it reported feeling more energy. And at $2 and 61 cents a day, it's genuinely one of the easiest wins in my routine. I use it every single morning and I think you should too. Very important between coffee every morning and life, I know I'm not always doing my teeth any favors. So when I learned about Laurene Co, a chewing gum that actually makes your teeth stronger every time you chew it, I was very intrigued. Lorenco uses nano hydroxyapatite, which is literally the same mineral your enamel is made of, to help strengthen and repair it. It comes in a bunch of flavors like mint, cinnamon, bubblegum, berry and they also make a really good fluoride free toothpaste. Loreen Co. Sent me some to try and I'm a fan. The taste lasts a lot longer than I expected and my teeth just feel stronger. So I like to chew it after meals. And it feels good to know that I'm actually helping my teeth every day. Time. It's such an effortless way to take better care of my teeth. Just better ones. Not more stuff. Just stuff that actually feels good and lasts. And that's the mindset behind Lily Silk, a brand making silk and cashmere pieces, clothing, sleepwear, bedding, accessories out of premium natural materials. Most of us default to synthetics because that's just what we know. But silk is a completely different experience. Smooth, lightweight and breathable. And lilysilk isn't positioning silk as some special occasion thing. They want it in your Everyday life. Your pillowcase, your pajamas, your blouses, your cashmere essentials. I've been wearing their pieces, and the quality truly surprised me. It doesn't feel like a trend piece. It feels like something I'll reach for years from now. Timeless over trendy, quality over quantity. That's become part of how I think about getting dressed and getting ready for bed. Interviewer/Host
audience to get to know the two of you a little bit better. Also in relation to your friendship and how this duo came to be. Can you walk us through your friendship origin story?
Peyton Dicks
We're so off book on this now. I love it. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Started in a little town called Boston. I don't know why I started it that way.
Peyton Dicks
We went to college together. I'm like, get in my purse.
Hunter Harris
Covering your dream.
Interviewer/Host
Boston.
Hunter Harris
No, we went to college together and we were the only two black girls in our freshman year film class. And we just, I don't know, like, started sharing notes, making, like, being friendly, setting together.
Peyton Dicks
I mean, you do the thing that you do when you go to, like, a pwi, right, which is like, you see another black girl and you're like, come. Even Loki. Even if you don't, like, immediately connect with them, it's just like we have this bare minimum to, like, hold on to together and build off of which is such an important starting point. There was our first moment of conflict, which I feel like that's when you lock in with someone, right? Like, when you meet someone, it's one thing. When you become friends, it's different. And we became friends when Hunter said that our teacher was hot and he wasn't, but he. I was right.
Hunter Harris
Let me say this. He was very smart. He knew a lot. And I.
Peyton Dicks
He's not biosexual. Don't.
Hunter Harris
Don't put that person. I would never.
Peyton Dicks
But yeah, so we had a quick debate, if you will. I eventually won it. Ten years later, I'll say it took
Hunter Harris
him 10 years to not be as handsome as he was before. That's how it worked out.
Peyton Dicks
Well, you don't know, but yeah, I feel like that was kind of like what we like, bonded over which, like, I love trauma bonding. I love strife. I love fighting over if men are hot or not. Even though, like, I'm gay. So there is. That does play a role into it. You're gay.
Hunter Harris
You're not blind.
Interviewer/Host
I was gonna say. I actually feel like I would trust your opinion even more.
Peyton Dicks
Exactly.
Interviewer/Host
Because you have. No, don't.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Actually.
Peyton Dicks
It's not me. No, no, no. Because I'll take you down some dark roads where I'm like, you don'. Vin Diesel, that's a man. Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
That's in 2001. Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
2026, baby. No, because you need to.
Hunter Harris
Okay.
Peyton Dicks
I know this is not the space to be talking about Vin Diesel on She's a Lucky Pod with Three Black Women, but he is truly, like, a poet. Go read his captions. Go see his video from January 1st, New Year's Day. I cried watching it.
Hunter Harris
Totally.
Interviewer/Host
Okay.
Peyton Dicks
And that, again, that's what I want to bring to the space. But, yeah, I feel like we just, you know, Hunter is met, derogatory, and complimentary. Every single person I've dated has notes and feedback on all of them.
Hunter Harris
We can go down the list, but I just want something, too, is that we didn't really. We worked together, like, very rarely in college just because we were both kind of doing different things, but we were always friends. But it's nice.
Peyton Dicks
I know, I know, I know.
Hunter Harris
But that was, like, the only. I didn't edit that column, though.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, yeah. It would have been better, honestly, if you did.
Hunter Harris
I was editing the school paper, and she Dick's picked up.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
And she had, like, a fashion column, which was. But I didn't edit that, actually, so. But I'm happy that, like, we finally. We've done, like, other things, like, kind of together. I wrote that Regina King cover story for InStyle. And then you did the creative for the shoot. Yeah, but this is, like, the first thing we've, like, done together.
Host/Producer
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
That's, like, fully ours.
Hunter Harris
Yeah. But it's a lot of fun.
Peyton Dicks
But it was really nice to, like, microdose working together. Like, because when the Regina moment came out, if it was the first time, we, like, text each other, be like, this is so cool that, like, our na, like, your name is on the byline. My name's on the creative. Like.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
And we get to put this, like, together and call it a version of ours. And now this is, like, fully ours.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And have your talents complement each other in that way.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And now you have. Let me say this.
Peyton Dicks
Yes. And I've been saying it works.
Interviewer/Host
I've been saying it, but now everybody can hear it.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Can we get into the pod or story.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, YouTube or wherever you get your podcast, but definitely YouTube, by the way.
Hunter Harris
The pod origin story is that I think we'd both been thinking about other ways to show up, like, and other kind of vessels, as you were saying earlier, like, for our personalities. And I had left my job, gotten freelance. You had left your job and gone freelance and just kind of felt like, oh, we finally both have, like, space and time to explore this together.
Peyton Dicks
For podcast long. Yeah, I guess that was kind of it.
Hunter Harris
Yeah. We made that one sheet. You came over. We made that one sheet, like, description with, like, 20 million typos.
Peyton Dicks
Totally. I look back at it the other day, I was like, who the hell would buy this? We must have been good old personality. I was like, they did not read over this one. But, yeah, we had, like, a first iteration of it, which was a great start to understand what we wanted and what we actually liked about the process and what we wanted to change about it. And I'm always so, like, regret nothing. Grateful to have experiences to teach me more about what I want and myself in our relationship. Yeah. Took a little break because. Wonderful. And it was kind of perfect timing because then we got to, like, reset and restart with both, like, our relationship and also, like, okay, what do we actually want from this? And who's the right partner for it?
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
And then we had a meeting with Higher Ground, and immediately we're like. We didn't even have high expectations. We were just like, okay, let's just, like, vibe check and see. I was like, my tweets are crazy. I was like, obama's definitely not gonna want to get behind me.
Interviewer/Host
Hunter.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, I can close that. You know me.
Hunter Harris
I don't know.
Peyton Dicks
But then it was. I was just so, like. It was so, like, kismet. It was so, like, there was so much synchronicity between, like, what they wanted and what we wanted. And it's. It was obvious that they understood our voice and who we wanted to.
Hunter Harris
Totally. And I think as we took that time to kind of not record just Reset, we really felt like, okay, we want someone who understands the show that we want to make. Understands our voices really well. And the thing with Higher Ground is it felt immediately like they really understood that and. Or, like, we like the show. We just want to, like, help you make more of it. Bigger, better, all of that stuff. And that was really important.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Because I don't think we Would have. I think we also had that one conversation where it's like, if this is where the show ends, if we can't find someone who feels like, you know, they are, like, locked and loaded in with this version of it, we're fine not doing it.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
And that's like, how fun. Yeah, Exactly.
Peyton Dicks
How cool that we did this. Like, totally. Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
But yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. That level of, like, alignment being really important in how you approach it together, but then also with another partner.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
I think we're both very, like, very authentic in how we approach all of our work stuff. And I don't think it just. It doesn't. I don't want something that feels fake. I don't want something that, like, I would not legitimately say to my best friend on camera. Like, that just doesn't feel like me or you.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. And I think a big thing was like, who are we speaking to besides each other? Who are we speaking to? You know? And I think that there was. Previously, we were just trying to be put out for everyone. And I was like, no. Like, we talked to a very specific gay guy online. A white woman who's interested in, like, understanding. More like an old, like, a millennial white woman. A gay guy at basement, and then a bunch of, like, baby queers. And like, that is our very special, very coveted. We hold them dear and near, like, demo. And we don't need to be for everyone. And, like, people won't get us. People won't like us. And that's totally fine. And now that feels like understanding across the board.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. Yeah. Well, what I appreciate, though, so much about the work that you both do is I feel like a lot of people in the cultural commentary space, particularly in the current climate, is it's just like, all shock value. It's like, who can get off the hottest take the absolute quickest.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Versus actually having a well thought out, well informed take and opinion. And sometimes it is going to be hot and unpopular. And I appreciate that. Y' all welcome that. But it's always, like, thoughtful, and it's not doing it just to have the shock value.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Yeah. I don't think that we're, like, really contrarians. Like, if we like something that everyone else likes, we're so fine to do that. It's never coming from a place of, okay, everyone else likes it, so I have to yuck it. Yeah, something like that.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, I don't. Yucky. Yum. But I judge it from afar. I would never. Doris would never yuck it. Right. I would hear it out. And I. I mean, the only thing I could think of is, like, I'd just be calling niggas just be gay. So I be telling people that, and they get upset sometimes. Specifically Drake fans.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Other than that. Yeah. I feel like we're. I feel like there's no. When you just rush to be first too often. I feel like when you, like, stumble and lose.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
And I mean, I. Hunter, she's really good about being like, here's how I feel. I'm strict and I'm sticking with it. Sometimes a little too stubborn about it. We'll circle back to that crazy from the Tourist. I'm like, the opposite. I'll say something like, yeah, next week. I don't know if I meant that. I'm changing my mind. So there's balance here.
Hunter Harris
Something I've been thinking about lately, though, is like, I don't have any Hot Take. I just have opinions. And if you. I think it's. There's something weird to me about, like, saying something that you think is, like, going to be controversial. Because it's controversial. It's like, no, I just feel the way I feel. Like, do I think the Drake album was bad?
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
That's not a hot take. That's just how I feel.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
And it's. Yeah. That's just something I've been noodling on lately.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. That makes me think about. I wonder if people will add the label to Hot Take as a prerequisite to what they're about to say to maybe soften the blow or to kind of level set expectations of. You may not like what I'm about to say. You could also just say it.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
But sometimes I've, like. I think sometimes we've said things and people like, oh, that's a hot take. I'm like, is it? What? Yeah. I don't think Aptis, anyone. I'm like, I don't think she can sing. They're like, oh, hot take. I'm like, no. Is it.
Peyton Dicks
That's just audio.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Right?
Peyton Dicks
So I do have ears, and I don't. And I love her music, but I don't mind that she can't say, like, two things can be true. But. Yeah. I think in a time, though, specifically where I was scrolling on TikTok, I was like, God, people just love to be angry, People love to be mad, and people love to fight online. Yeah. There's one thing about me. Yeah. My mom's a Scorpio. Okay. My grandmother's a sad and a lesbian and from Oakland. Fight with me in person. I'm like, you know what I mean? If you could do all that work in the comments, go ahead and like, you wouldn't do it to my face. And I think in a. In a time that everyone is just like, wants to be agitated. Yeah. It's like, I don't know, it feels like it's never coming from us trying to like ruffle feathers.
Interviewer/Host
We're never fake outreach about anything.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And that is something that, yeah, I
Hunter Harris
see show up a lot online. Like if I'm. If I'm worked out about something, you can best belief I'm really worked up about it and I'll be texting about it after we leave the studio.
Peyton Dicks
For months, maybe years on the few subjects. No, I don't know. Are your comments mostly like. I feel like, I mean, we have like pop culture takes. People love to have big feelings about pop culture. Do you find that too like that? Do you get ever into the comments or see people like having big emotional responses?
Interviewer/Host
Not a ton. I would say for a lot of the work that I do, it probably falls into more of the kind of like self help, the umbrella, which doesn't really tend to get the people going. But I sometimes it just depends on who the messenger is though. Like earlier this year, I had Emma Greed on the show during her press run. And like during that time she was like really getting the people going. So yeah, some of that did kind of filter in. But come. I mean, I don't know. It wasn't anything that I was too worried about. I also stopped reading comments after a certain point.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, that's for the best.
Peyton Dicks
I just look for someone being like, Peyton looks so pretty.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
And then I close out.
Interviewer/Host
Seen everything we needed to see.
Peyton Dicks
That's the review.
Hunter Harris
We had this one Drake video go viral and I. I was boxing in the comments. Cause I was having fun. I was like, this man was like,
Interviewer/Host
I did see that.
Hunter Harris
I'm like, why don't you focus on selling one singular T shirt? Because he had a T shirt brand. I went to the page and I
Interviewer/Host
looked someone to clean under their nails.
Hunter Harris
Oh, yeah. He was like, take the mics away immediately. I said, clean the dirt from under your nails immediately. This one guy was like, oh, here come like two blah, blah, blah. I was like, you're 39 years old. You have gray in your beard. You don't have any kids. You're spending your father's day telling two young women to get off a microphone, please.
Peyton Dicks
Your beard doesn't even connect. Yeah, like no.
Hunter Harris
Sometimes I have the time, and I'm like, ready?
Peyton Dicks
I'm like, you texted me. I was like, enough, Hunter. I'm getting the notifications when you come. I'm like, it's enough. I don't know how to turn them off. It's stressing me out.
Hunter Harris
Sometimes I just do look for a fight. What can I say?
Peyton Dicks
That video went up weeks ago.
Hunter Harris
My. I'm still checking in, being like, oh, what do you have to say? What now?
Peyton Dicks
They stop responding. She goes, and another thing.
Hunter Harris
I'm not done. Yeah, I actually have time. Like, oh, wow.
Interviewer/Host
Yes.
Hunter Harris
Yes.
Peyton Dicks
Hundreds of people on the Internet. I'm talking about Loki. No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
Interviewer/Host
So with this being. She's so lucky. We talk a lot about luck on this show. We talk a lot about creating our own luck. But I actually thought that it would be fun to talk to the two of you about depictions of luck in popular culture. And I came up with a little list of examples that I thought of where I thought of examples of luck that kind of framed how I think about luck in popular culture that we can chat about. But then also, if the creative juices get going and you think of some. I would love to talk about that with you.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
First being most obviously the song Lucky by Britney Spears, which is the namesake of the show. Other depiction of luck that I thought about was the Disney Channel original movie Luck of the Irish.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, yes.
Interviewer/Host
That was a big one.
Peyton Dicks
Was Inspo for Sinners.
Hunter Harris
Right?
Interviewer/Host
That's right.
Hunter Harris
Oh, my God.
Peyton Dicks
I got into that or what? I'm mixing moments, but, yeah, it was. It's not so Disney Channel. They was on their one tattoos.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
It would become Smart House every month.
Interviewer/Host
Well, it was the same actor, right. In that movie. It was. The Smart House guy was the one who started turning into a leprechaun. But it was like every month, Disney would come out with banger after banger after banger, and I was in front
Hunter Harris
of my TV with my popcorn, ready, ready. I was a kid who printed out the ballots for the teen for the Kids Choice Awards.
Peyton Dicks
Right.
Hunter Harris
Like, follow along like that. So that's something about me.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, what?
Interviewer/Host
How did I get there?
Hunter Harris
I've been about this for a long time.
Peyton Dicks
Just so you know, I see my split. So, you know, like, let's watch a Disney Channel movie. Oh, my God. I was like, what would I do? Yes, you're watching Disney Channel.
Hunter Harris
Sorry.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, that's on adhd. Sorry.
Interviewer/Host
No, that is totally fine. Next, depiction of luck. 13 going on 30 another movie classic.
Peyton Dicks
Almost used that as my reference of pop culture, actually.
Interviewer/Host
Really?
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. But then I made it black.
Interviewer/Host
But I know we can also. We can dig into that, too. But I do feel like that was a really good movie. That was almost an example of, like,
Host/Producer
be careful what you wish for.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
You just might get it.
Hunter Harris
I love the wish fulfillment teen girl movie. Like Ella Enchanted, I think, to some degree, Princess Diaries, too, because she, like, wants to be part of this popular girl group, and then she gets there and she's like, oh, shoot, I've made a big mistake. I missed my loudmouth friends.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah, not you.
Peyton Dicks
I don't even know you. That's line read. Okay.
Hunter Harris
But that's a good one. Okay.
Interviewer/Host
And then on the creating their own luck tip, because that's more so the theme of the show, this idea that we create our own luck.
Host/Producer
I actually thought about the Cheetah Girls.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Oh.
Hunter Harris
Sisters.
Interviewer/Host
Really good example of them creating their
Host/Producer
own luck because they work so hard
Interviewer/Host
and they were so dedicated and diligent in what they did to be stars.
Hunter Harris
I'm gonna take one. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
Peyton Dicks
Great movie.
Hunter Harris
Is a big one for me. And I've been thinking I need to rewatch it. I haven't seen it in years and years and years, but I just love the idea of Lindsay Lohan. It's almost like a Lady Bird prequel where she's like, I think that I am, like, a star. No one else knows it. I wear my little bottle cap necklace,
Peyton Dicks
like, blah, blah, blah.
Hunter Harris
And she's like, I have a lucky liar.
Peyton Dicks
Right.
Hunter Harris
Sometimes that's how you make your own luck is by a little white lie. And then she has a friend who doesn't see the magic, and she. They kind of both open themselves up to being more rational, being more practical. Also having a little bit more romance in how you address your life and your dreams, expectations. But that.
Peyton Dicks
Like the Lindsay Lohan and just my look. Well, yeah, of course.
Hunter Harris
Of course. But the paparazzi photo that became the
Peyton Dicks
poster of her winking.
Hunter Harris
That was a paparazzi photo. Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Really? Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
She's fat.
Hunter Harris
No. She knew.
Peyton Dicks
She's doing well, too. She looks good. It's kind of impossible for me to think about luck without thinking about the artist's way. Sorry. Mentioned in every single thing I do. And I know I'm taking a bit of a stroll away from Disney Channel movies.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
And to Julia Cameron. But, I mean, I guess, honestly, though, I would think about it as pop culture. Right. Like, it's a book that you don't even have to get. It's like ubiquitous at a certain point, I think. Especially now.
Hunter Harris
Right.
Peyton Dicks
I think, like, after seeing like Dochi do it.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
That gave it a bit of a bump. I remember someone had recently talked about on Lost Culture's too, but I just like, went through a bad breakup and started doing it and that was it. It was like the copy I had for like seven years. So much dust on it, all the things. But in terms of like, creating my own luck, I do think that it's like been one of the most helpful tools in terms of releasing any sort of expectation of what is next and just like trying to dream of very freely dream of, like anything could happen next. But here's maybe the things that I want to like, call in. And I. I don't know, I feel like I used to just put so much more. Like, if I'm not doing this by this age, then I'm not doing anything at all.
Host/Producer
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And do you feel like it helped you work through blocks? Because I will say, admittedly, I have been an artist weight abandoner multiple times. I think the first furthest I got through it was like six weeks. I got like halfway through, but I've never been able to make it all the way through. After many attempts, do you feel like there is kind of a hill that you get over with it?
Peyton Dicks
Let me say this. The most disrespected person in America is the artist way abandoner.
Hunter Harris
Okay.
Peyton Dicks
You're actually the most important to the group.
Host/Producer
Thank you.
Peyton Dicks
Because what do you do before you start it? You abandoned it just about 17 million times. Like, that's part of it.
Hunter Harris
You're actually.
Peyton Dicks
You're on your artist way journey right now.
Host/Producer
Okay.
Peyton Dicks
You're live. So one day we might make it.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Well, I think, like, you know, I don't advise someone to go through, like, the worst wake up of their life, but you will get snatched. By the way, all I did was live in the gym. But I do think that, like, knowing if you release the pressure of doing it.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
And just. Or completing it, that's like part of it. Right? Like, let me just try a week. Let me just try a couple of the, like, you know, little assignment tasks at the end of the week. I think when you don't try to finish it, it helps you finish it. And like, I carry it around. I used to at least carry around with me all the time to just try and do like one little thing or tell myself doing one single paragraph and just like, break it down to its smallest Form. But I'm like, also part of finishing the artist's way is not finishing the artist's way. Like, I really think it's a huge part of it, but I don't know, like, having the ability to start. Like, there's this little quote that someone once text me that's like, to begin, begin. And like, starting is the hardest part. So, like, honestly, like, that's half of it already.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
In my opinion.
Interviewer/Host
Did you have any favorite artist dates that you went on? Because that tripped me up too.
Peyton Dicks
I went to an Alice Coltrane exhibit in la. It was like I was there for a bit and it just made me better at going to things by myself. I just, like, I'm such an extrovert, like, need to be talking to someone all the time because otherwise I look crazy because I'm talking to myself. And that was just, like, so moving and powerful and special. And the exhibit, I don't know if it's still there, but it was incredible. And I think that was one of the. And it was recommended by, like, one of my best friends who had just started the artist way too, and was like, oh, I did this. Like, here's a recommendation. So it was fun to feel like it was kind of like community based in that way.
Host/Producer
For sure. Yeah. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
I think a big part of, like, the idea of creating your own luck to me, which the artist way definitely speaks to, is sometimes, like, making space in your life for something to come in or to, like, feel inspired. And that's what I think. Morning page as artist day, as in as a artist way abandoner. I'm stuck on week three.
Peyton Dicks
You're like, we see each other.
Hunter Harris
I'm like, always about to restart, and it's like, something happens. But I think that the biggest kind of feedback piece of it that I really loved was sometimes you just have to put yourself in a space to feel inspiration, to get in some new stimulus. And that's, I think, a really big part of creating your own luck and finding it.
Peyton Dicks
Okay, I want to pick you back up. The making space thing is interesting. I'm going larger with that, which is when you look and realize how crowded your life is. Sometimes it's shit you don't want or need or people you maybe don't need as close to you. And I think, like, that is a big lesson too, of, like, how to make that space so, like, more can come in.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Because there's so. I mean, we live in New York. Like, we're like hot, busy black women. Like, there's We're. There's so much noise all the time. Like, how do you clear a bit of that? Even just a little bit of it, like, carve out more energy for something new.
Hunter Harris
Yeah. And the artisty thing, like, that was a real problem. Like, I am so, like, what's going on? What's, like, next to my calendar, whatever. And sometimes it's like the action of I'm gonna actually prioritize something that is just for my artistic development, not for, like, my career, not for a friend thing, not for a work thing. That's maybe the biggest, like, lesson that I think is important.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. Yeah. I think, like, my inner perfectionist, which is truly what the artist's way is designed to kill, which I have not successfully done, clearly. Was also getting so hung up on this idea of feeling, like, not creative enough or not considering myself a creative. Even though everybody is a creative, everybody has the capacity for creativity. Still feeling like I couldn't put it in a box, I feel like was my biggest hurdle to actually label cleaning and thinking through it.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. But I think you said when we
Hunter Harris
were on Irish show that it's not maybe not the book to do, like, while you're trying to finish something, like finish a book, finish a script, but it's more of, like. Like thinking about your own artistic and creative development.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah, totally.
Hunter Harris
Unless, like, sort of an act, like, I want to finish this, like, in 30 days, you'll have a screenplay finish.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah, yeah, kind of that in between time.
Peyton Dicks
So.
Host/Producer
You know, I talk about luck being something that you build, not something that just happens to you. And nowhere is that more true than with money. For years, my relationship with finances were pretty reactive. I check my accounts, feel a little anxious, close the apps, and just hope things worked out. And that's not alchemizing anything. That's just crossing your fingers. Monarch is what actually changed that for me. It's a personal finance app that tracks everything. Your accounts, your investments, your savings goals, your spending, all in one place. And it showed me something I've completely missed on my own. A chunk of my spending had been quite quietly creeping up month over month. It was nothing dramatic, but it was just enough that my savings rate had started slipping without me noticing. And Monarch caught it before it became an actual problem. It genuinely feels like having a financial advisor in your pocket. There's an AI weekly recap that flags spending spikes and net worth shifts before I'd ever catch them myself. I can literally ask the AI assistant things like, can I afford this trip without touching my savings and it tells me. And if you split bills with friends, Bill Split lets you scan the receipt. Everyone claims what they got with no separate app needed. Write your own money story with Monarch. Use the code luckyonarch.com to get your first year of Monarch Core Half off at just $50. That's 50% off your first year at monarch.com with the code LUCKY. Use the code luckyonarch.comto get your first year of Monarch Core half off at just $50. Here's something that I believe deeply. You cannot create your own luck without reproductive autonomy. Every big decision that I've made in
Interviewer/Host
my life, my career, my finances, my
Host/Producer
relationships, all of it was possible because I had access to birth control when I really needed it. But access is not easy for everyone. Which is why we need to talk about opill. It is the first over the counter daily birth control pill and it is changing the game.
Interviewer/Host
Requires no prescription, no doctor's appointment, no insurance.
Host/Producer
You can just walk into most major retailers or order it online and get it. Getting on birth control used to mean jumping through so many hoops, and opill is here to change that. Opill is FDA approved. It's safe and effective, and it's backed by over 50 years of science. So it's not something new or untested. It's the same pill that has actually been prescribed by doctors for decades. It's just finally available without all the barriers. It's also genuinely flexible. You take one pill at the same time every day and it starts working after 48 hours and you can start it or stop it whenever your life calls for it. Preventing pregnancy is as easy as opill. Read all label information and use as directed.
Interviewer/Host
I want to come back to your podcast. And that in between time that you all had when you were on hiatus and determining what the new home for the show was going to be, what that time was like for you and what you used that space for. Would something like that be good for like an artist's way? How were you pouring into yourselves creatively? What did that in between time look like?
Hunter Harris
I feel like I know I started working on the Pit podcast. Yeah, that was like the HBO Max companion show to the Pit. That was something that I was really occupied by during that time. And I feel like you correct me if I'm wrong, but you were do a lot of standup. A lot more stand up during that time too.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. And I think that's something that only doing this podcast had taught me was like, oh, I love and Raven physical comedy. Like I love Also just being IRL and wanting to just get comfortable performing more. And I think that was a period I started one writing a little bit more for myself. Like starting to think about long term writing too. And then the total nightmare that it is to do stand up or live readings and that, like getting immediate feedback versus like sharing something online and putting it out in the ether and sure comments are left, but not getting to watch people engage in real time or laugh in real time or whatever it is. So that was like a huge challenge. It was like so like I really don't feel nervous and I don't experience shame anymore because I did the hardest way. But it was just like, oh, I'm so excited to feel fear. Like that was actually a big thing for me. I was so excited to be afraid again. I was like, I want to get out of my comfort comfort zone. I know what I'm good at. I want to get better. So I have to do things that scare me. And I feel like that was a time period that I was, yeah, like doing other like podcast shows. I hosted a series for them, us that was like, like Bathroom Stall Confessional, Queer Things and even that. Like it was like so fun to just chat. I just, I'm a loudmouth and I'm just, I feel like a conversationalist at the end of the day and I just want to talk to people, which is why we're all here. But yeah, I guess like that it was fun to play with different mics in my hand for different reasons. Back to the. That's the raven of it all, I guess. But then I remember specifically, I guess more in terms of less individually more for us. We were right after the podcast or maybe we were still recording towards the end. We went non verbal on your couch and just watched a show. And I was like, oh, it's been so long since we've done this. This version of Hanging out that wasn't like, are you going to this launch thing? Okay, yeah, let's go to this together. Or like there's a screening. Okay, let's do that. Because even though it's like, that's fun and not like technically work, it's still. You're still. Like, still is exactly. You're still. I gotta put a mug on to a certain degree. And it was like, oh, this is the kind of hangout that is so like integral to our friendship. And the success of the show is like non verbal parallel playtime where it's just your dog, you know, iPad baby, and two screens going like it Was very. That. And I feel like that for the end of the. The first iteration on that break was really, like, a nice reminder that, like, that's the point of it all.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
I mean, some of my favorite hangouts are when we're, like, in a car coming from somewhere, and we're just like, oh, girl, I can't wait to talk about this. Like, literally, totally, like, oh, and another thing. And it's like, we both, like, interrupt
Peyton Dicks
each other's silences, and that's so funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We're like. And I'll name them. No.
Interviewer/Host
I do think that what you both just shared, though, is really important, and it's something that we can overlook, especially if you're, like, ambitious or more type A or there's so many things that you want to do. Embracing fear and embracing things that scare you and then also letting there be space for silence and stillness. Those are, like, the two scariest things to people who may identify as being more ambitious and are kind of in between something and figuring out what's next.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And the two things that we avoid the most, that we probably need the most. I recently released a solo episode where I was talking about me being on my 87th quarter life crisis. Like, how I guess I'm closer to midlife now. I guess needing to embrace that and how uncomfortable it is to be like,
Host/Producer
I don't really know what's next, and
Interviewer/Host
I can't really force it. It's just got to be what it is.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Host/Producer
So scary.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. But, like, how fun to live in the potential of the thing before it happens. Like, a friend of mine before, she was, like, in between jobs, and she was like, I don't really know what to do next. And I was like, not to, like, eat, pray, love your anxiety. But, like, this is so special. Like, this is a time that you really get to be like, well, what do you want next? And, like, look at. Think about all the ways it could look. And, like, when you get a job again, baby, you're gonna miss this, by the way. It's gonna beat your ass. It always does, you know? So I kind of was like, this living in, like, the right potential of it all is sometimes, like, the best parts. That's hard to see because of anxiety, for sure.
Host/Producer
When you're in the thick of it.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hunter Harris
And because we put such a premium on, like, having something completed, having something finished, and I'm really, I guess, trying to be a little bit more conscious of people asking, like, okay, what are you Doing outside of this, like, what are you doing next? Blah, blah. And it's like. But actually, this is a lot of work. I write a newsletter. I host this podcast. I like, am a dog mom, single dog mom.
Peyton Dicks
I'm a mother.
Hunter Harris
And even, like, doing the artist way and making space for my own creative development. That's a lot. Full plate for a lot of people.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
I really like what you said about fear, like, finding the next thing that hears you.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. I, as of late, actually hate the what's next? Question and have decided to just not ask anybody in normal conversation, whatever. Just not. Because every time I get asked it, I'm filled with dread.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah. It's so capitalist. And, you know, I'm starting to practice, too. When I'm out and meeting people to be like, what do you like to do?
Host/Producer
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Because some people don't want to talk about their jobs. I feel lucky that my work is again, like my personhood. So I'm happy to talk about it.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
But if I'm getting to know someone, I want to create a friendship or relationship. I want to know what you care about, and if that's work, great, let's talk about it. But I think that that setup is so. It's not ours, you know what I mean? To be like, what do you do?
Hunter Harris
Or.
Peyton Dicks
And then that. Or like, has a value to you.
Interviewer/Host
To me. Totally the undertone.
Peyton Dicks
Totally.
Interviewer/Host
Okay.
Hunter Harris
Yes, I totally hear that. However, when I ask someone like, oh, what do you do? Or it's. I'm so, like, what are you passionate about? Like, I take it for granted sometimes that I spend my entire day doing stuff that I really genuinely feel very deeply passionate about. You know, that's for sure. Things we talk about on the show. I've been talking about to myself in
Peyton Dicks
my apartment because I look, Remy, I
Hunter Harris
literally, I'm like, girl, did you see that episode? She's like, remy's my dog. But I do sort of like now I hear it more when I'm like, oh, I don't mean like, how can we help each other? Like, what can we, like, Lincoln build? And do I. I truly mean, like, what are you into and how are you feeling, like, day to day? Like, what. What is your making you so happy and excited to wake up the next day?
Peyton Dicks
I think working in media also when your name is so attached to a big conglomerate or brand, it really, I think at least or did for me, it like, with my value. And I was like, oh, I'm only valuable because I'm attached to this bigger Entity and I could provide something for someone. And when I went to. I was a global social director at Mac Cosmetics. Yeah. And I. It was a big daddy job. And I remember taking the job even though I knew I was going to leave it, shout out to Estee Lauder money that I quickly took and ran. But I was like, I don't want to tell anyone about this job. I'm not going to announce this job. I want to know what it feels like to move through the world and have people guessing about what I do. And for a long time, I consulted for really big brands and just didn't tell people because it wasn't my personality. It wasn't the thing that was like, it was thing I could do. And I liked actually, but wasn't important to me. And I loved retraining my brain to be like, I'm not the comma next to my name. Like, I am my. I'm just Peyton Diggs, and that's gonna have to be enough. And that'll show me who gives a fuck about me low key. And who actually wants to build a relationship with me. And not based off of what I do or could provide.
Host/Producer
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
If that makes. I don't know. It was a big thing I had to release. I don't know if you struggled with that, too.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think when I left. Left Vulture, when I left New York magazine, I, like, been in New York magazine for four years. It was my total dream job. It was like a magazine I read because I read the Gossip Girl recaps when I was like, 13. And deciding to leave that job and start a newsletter in 2020 was like, one of the hardest things I've ever done? Just because I. It was that same sort of ego death of. Okay, so who am I if I'm not like, hi, I'm Hunter and I work for New York, like, my favorite magazine to read.
Peyton Dicks
And you're like, new York, my girl. Like, it was like, that was. You were known especially like, yeah, yeah, we're coming here for Hunter.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
We don't know about who other.
Hunter Harris
And that was a really big. I remember the first year I'd be like, oh, I write a newsletter. Like, I don't know, it's just kind of weird. Like, we'll see what happens, whatever. And just taking that bet on. I'm actually Hunter the writer and not Hunter Byline was a really big mindset shift. And now I see it in other people. So clearly what I'm like, oh, but who are you if you are not Attached to this huge media brand.
Peyton Dicks
Totally.
Hunter Harris
And what do you actually value and what are you actually making outside of something that, that, you know, you, like, go to a conference room to, like.
Peyton Dicks
Like for other people.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah, exactly.
Hunter Harris
And it's so. It was. I feel the same way that it's like, okay, now I'm not like, person who works for this big brand that you know and recognize. I'm Hunter. And I think something else too, that I. I'm sure you also deal with is we show up in so many different ways online.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Some people are so like, you have to know that I do this and do this and do this. And I, I feel totally. Literally, I was at a party a couple weeks ago and this guy was like, oh, my God, Gur. That girl from that TikTok where you said, Lita Dunham Penn goes crazy every single time.
Peyton Dicks
Oh, they're gonna say,
Hunter Harris
okay, don't bring that up. Yeah, long story. Cab driver in Paris told me, like, Michael Jackson.
Interviewer/Host
I saw that. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
So it was.
Peyton Dicks
There was a lot, but I was
Hunter Harris
like, oh, that's totally fine. Like, that's what. You know me from this random video from our podcast. It doesn't matter that I have written cover stories for GQ and New York magazine and I have this number one movies and TV newsletter on substack that
Interviewer/Host
your panel is crazy.
Hunter Harris
But, like, that you only know me in this one way. That's totally fine. I think that really divorces you from a lot of, like, the ego of, no, I'm this and this and this. Because then the Internet, maybe someone only knows you from like, oh, wait, you have like such good style. And I see you like on Shop my. Or maybe they only see you as like, oh, I've been to your stand up shows.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
And it's so funny when I meet people who love your work and I'm like, and actually she does this and this and this. And they're like, oh, my God, great.
Peyton Dicks
Like with each other's PR team. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Literally, I'm like, and actually watch this.
Peyton Dicks
Actually watch this. And then you pull up your phone.
Interviewer/Host
Look at this.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Have you even seen this?
Peyton Dicks
I've never seen her hot mom. Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
I feel like the. And I'm going through it right now. The, like, ego death for Leos is next level. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a constant, constant cycle.
Hunter Harris
But you have to be okay with that. I think that's a really important, like, lesson is that for sure, if you only know me in this one way, guess what you're gonna Be so excited because, like, you have four more things to offer. Like, four more things.
Interviewer/Host
So much more for you to.
Host/Producer
I'm 36.
Peyton Dicks
I love being black. I love being black. You're 19 years old.
Hunter Harris
I truly thought you were younger than I thought. You're like, oh, my God.
Peyton Dicks
What? I'm like, I'm gonna kill you, Loki. But, like, wow. No.
Hunter Harris
Incredible wow.
Peyton Dicks
Sorry. You can cut that if you need to. Literally, I was like, oh, you're like, 20. Literally 26 or 27. That's what.
Hunter Harris
Wow.
Host/Producer
Great work, big mama.
Hunter Harris
Beautiful, big mama.
Host/Producer
Yeah,
Peyton Dicks
I was just wondering that in case it was like, Saturn Returnee. I was wonder.
Interviewer/Host
No, my Saturn return is, like, long, long gone. That was many moons ago.
Host/Producer
So.
Interviewer/Host
I would also love to talk to y' all about pop culture moments of 2026, because I feel like 2026 has been such an odd year, but also really noisy and also a lot of pop culture moments that I feel like have been sending most of us into a collective psychosis. You know what I mean? Have there been any pop culture moments so far this year that you all have felt like, is this a fever
Host/Producer
dream that we're all collectively having?
Interviewer/Host
Is this real?
Hunter Harris
I think people liking obsession so much that movie obsession, I don't understand it.
Interviewer/Host
It took me a really long time to realize that people weren't talking about the Beyonce Idris Elba movie. For the first couple of days, I was like, is everybody rewatching that? Like, why is everybody talking? That's an old movie. And then I realized, no, this is a.
Peyton Dicks
That's something different. Yeah, something different. I mean, in terms of, like, mass psychosis, I feel like that always happens in a place I call Fiji.
Interviewer/Host
And.
Host/Producer
Yes.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah, absolutely.
Peyton Dicks
We're, like, just not, like, the way that they are, but the way that we behave. Like, the loser of Love island is always us.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
It's always like, we're the problem. You know what I mean? Like, the way people act on twitter.com and threads is. And TikTok, too. Yeah, everyone. Everyone got a PhD also in sociology. I'm like, oh, okay, you're 16.
Interviewer/Host
So. So I candidly have never watched Love island before. Like, not a single episode. Not us, not uk. Like, nothing. So every year when this. This particular collective psychosis happens, I find it especially fascinating just watching it all from the outside. So I'm like, I've never seen a single episode, but I still know who everybody is. I still. I still know every detail of what happened because everyone is so consumed by it that it is so Fascinating. It's almost more interesting to watch as an outsider, the commentary of it than like the show itself.
Hunter Harris
You watch it and you're like. And I'm actually so healthy.
Peyton Dicks
Like, you watch it and you're like, I'm so happy.
Hunter Harris
I'm not in that masculine.
Peyton Dicks
Your brain works. That's beautiful.
Hunter Harris
That's really cool.
Peyton Dicks
You don't see that anymore. One of these days.
Interviewer/Host
No, I. For me, it's purely because I just feel creepy and old where I'm like, as we just said, I'm 36. I feel really weird about watching all these like 24 year olds grind up on each other on an island and have such strong feelings about it. At my age. I do makes me feel weird.
Hunter Harris
I do have to like fast forward through some of like, the, the challenges, the making out because I'm like, I don't want to watch this.
Peyton Dicks
Like, I like, it's not sexy or sexual. It's weird.
Hunter Harris
I want to get to the drama.
Peyton Dicks
I want to see people like in a cut, talking. You didn't hear from me, but Bryce said that. But no, yeah, I get that actually. Like, even being 32, I'm like watching. So like, there's one 30 year old on it and he's like the only boy I had a crush on. And everyone else. Yeah.
Hunter Harris
Him being like the moral paragon of this place.
Peyton Dicks
It's like, get you off this island, baby. It's like, I mean, bring Trinity where
Interviewer/Host
you're out of here.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly.
Peyton Dicks
But yeah. And I'm like, oh, right. I have to remember, like, when people put so much moral, like, like, what's the word? I'm thinking of, like, expecting like the, the highest morals from these people. I'm like, their brains are developing, they're on their parents health insurance. Like, what do you think that they're
Interviewer/Host
gonna cut off from society for however many weeks?
Peyton Dicks
There's nothing to do.
Hunter Harris
They can't read books, they can't watch movies, they can't do anything other than give good chat or try to. I do think that they should have like someone's like age on the screen at every single moment to their mind. Just so you know, she. She's 23. Right. Like, don't hold this against her because I think that would be very helpful for the public's reaction.
Interviewer/Host
Yeah. I do also think there's been a really odd instance where people are also doing that to fictional characters. I feel like I've seen that a lot on TikTok over the past few years of people watching Sex and the City for the first time and then being like, oh, my God, Carrie Bradshaw. Here's all the reasons why she's so terrible and she's such a mess. And I'm like, yeah, but that's.
Host/Producer
She's supposed to be.
Interviewer/Host
She's supposed to be a very flawed character. If she made every perfect decision that you would make with your 2026 brain or whatever, it would be super boring and, like, no one would want to watch it. That's. That's the whole point.
Hunter Harris
Yeah.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Hunter Harris
I do have this working theory that people. Reality TV is hitting such a premium right now because people on reality TV can misbehave, can act crazy, can get loud, can do all this stuff. And in a way that people in fiction, like, you have to virtue signal, like, I know this is bad. This is a joke. I'm doing this anyway. And it's like, we give reality TV people more leeway in that way than maybe characters in fiction. Because a character, you know, I don't know, Melanie, Trinity, Anaya on Love island can act one way and we can fuss and discuss about it, whatever, But Carrie is like, wait, do they know that she's actually behaving badly? That she's being a bad friend in this scene in a way that. I don't know.
Host/Producer
I'm.
Peyton Dicks
Well, I wonder if it goes back to our conversations about divas and getting to observe people basically act out when we have so much now societal fear of misbehaving and being caught misbehaving, too. And we. I'm gonna really. I'm gonna find my way. But we had a conversation about the new meta glasses and a surveillance. Right. And so it's like, not just are you afraid of behaving badly? You're afraid of your bad behavior getting documented and caught. Because we are just always, like, taping something or recording something or do more of it. All right? And I think maybe there's this form of escapism that happens when you get to watch a housewife flip a table or call someone name or something like that, because we don't really get that cathartic release because we have to be like, good. Yeah. You know?
Hunter Harris
Yeah. And I think, too, I remember one time you got a comment years ago on the pod of someone saying that, I don't think these girls should have a podcast together. They don't seem to agree on anything. And I'm like, wait, that's the point. Yes.
Peyton Dicks
Yes. Yes.
Hunter Harris
Yeah. Like, no. And we can disagree about stuff, but, like, with so much love and Affection. And that's have called having a conversation.
Peyton Dicks
Right.
Hunter Harris
Like you're saying, if everyone agrees and that's not drama, that's not anything you want to watch.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
I feel like there's also very similar sentiments happening in the literary space with books where people are like, this book is terrible because I didn't like this character. And I'm like, well, you don't have to like the character to appreciate the story. You have to like everything.
Hunter Harris
Right.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Everyone.
Hunter Harris
Not everything is like, for you to be seen. Not everything is for you to feel like, oh, I agree with her. I feel represented by her sometimes. Like, that tension is what makes something so compelling to me.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Podcast Host/Announcer
Agree.
Peyton Dicks
Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
I think our brains need a little more of a workout than they've been getting the past few years.
Peyton Dicks
He's. God. Yeah. Oh, my God. I'm scared for the youth. I don't know. I'm scared of my peers, actually. Let me not just put that on
Interviewer/Host
for all of us.
Peyton Dicks
Yes. Equal opportunity fear. Yes. Yes. Yeah.
Interviewer/Host
Okay, before we wrap up, we got to do a little bit of a rapid fire, which I'm excited about. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to put a phrase out there. You can each take turns answering first thing that comes to mind for our rapid fire.
Host/Producer
Are you ready?
Peyton Dicks
Yes.
Hunter Harris
Okay.
Interviewer/Host
One word to describe summer 2026 outside Jess.
Peyton Dicks
I was going to say, really? They won't believe us. But literally, because I've already been it. Okay. Pride took me out Song of the
Interviewer/Host
summer for you personally.
Hunter Harris
Summer Girl by Haim for the record breaking seventh summer in a row.
Peyton Dicks
Naomi Scott Cherry.
Interviewer/Host
Oh, yes.
Peyton Dicks
So good. Great album.
Interviewer/Host
These are good. Okay, the celebrity notes app apology you're still waiting on.
Hunter Harris
Oh, my gosh.
Peyton Dicks
J. Lo to me that one time. But Smash, though, obviously.
Hunter Harris
Oh, my gosh. Why was my first thought JJ Abrams for ruining Star wars,
Peyton Dicks
like. And I'm still mad.
Hunter Harris
And I am actually, I am
Peyton Dicks
the
Interviewer/Host
most unserious thing that you took seriously this year.
Hunter Harris
Oh, my gosh.
Peyton Dicks
Pride.
Hunter Harris
Sorry, sorry.
Peyton Dicks
They don't kill me. See, this is why
Hunter Harris
the most unseasonous thing I took seriously, probably the slap. I was saying I need. We need another slap. We need the. The slap. To have another Oscars. To have another slap. I'm always thinking about the slap. A little something about me.
Peyton Dicks
One thing about me, I'm always thinking about the slap.
Interviewer/Host
I am. I am. Internet discourse you're most tired of.
Hunter Harris
I'm gonna say age gap discourse. I'm a bit like, I don't know it just. It feels like the same thing again and again and again.
Interviewer/Host
People won't keep doing it.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. So that's on every man, actually.
Peyton Dicks
I guess I would say, like, probably, like, like label discourse and like queer tick tock. Like, I feel like there's a lot of lesbians who have a lot of time and a lot of people who get one a little weird, a little turfy about, like, who gets to call themselves a lesbian and why. A lot of people that, like, we're still fighting bisexuals. Why they're beaten to a pulp. They enough like lay off bisexuals. People come for Geminis. They come from bisexuals. Leave them alone. That's my P.S. let people be by anyway. Yeah, probably that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Interviewer/Host
And then the last thing that gave you the it.
Peyton Dicks
So many things.
Hunter Harris
How much time do you have else gonna give me an ick?
Peyton Dicks
Oh, I've stopped dating recently. And the part of the reason. No, there's a ton of reasons, but I'm like on a break from dating. But the last person I hooked up with did say to me, you're dangerous. You're dangerous. This is not Love island, by the way. I was like, that whole, like, you're dangerous, you're trouble. What is. What is that? Put it down. Well, like, maybe Loki body putting tea, but, like, it was pretty rancid. It was pretty awful.
Hunter Harris
I actually had a dream about this guy last night. The last thing that gave me Nick was a guy I went out on a date with who said that he found Subway Takes, like, really insightful. And I said, not the word I would use, but interesting.
Interviewer/Host
And.
Hunter Harris
And like, that, like, the date really, like, went downhill after that. I was like, there's like, more about that.
Peyton Dicks
You're like, bring back to Subway Takes, actually. Truly.
Interviewer/Host
I was like, oh, no, that's a take.
Hunter Harris
I was like, name them.
Peyton Dicks
So, like, which episodes?
Hunter Harris
Which insights did you gain? Right? It was just so like, huh. Okay.
Peyton Dicks
I mean, I did learn to go to someone's birthday. They shout out to Zach Schiffman. But I was like, that was one of the best ones. It was like one invites you to their birthday party. It means two things. Either they actually want to be close or, like, they just need bodies to fill the room. And I, as someone who likes both. Yeah, go. Yeah, that was insightful. That's honestly kind of.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, that's the best one.
Interviewer/Host
Maybe talk about that one.
Hunter Harris
Yeah, maybe he wasn't off book, though.
Interviewer/Host
Peyton Hunter, thank you so much for being here today.
Hunter Harris
Thanks for.
Interviewer/Host

Hunter Harris

Podcast Host/Announcer
Of course.
Peyton Dicks
Oh my God. Have a great summer.
Hunter Harris
Have a kick ass somebody. Whoa.
Peyton Dicks
Bad girl.
Hunter Harris
I know, I know. It was like outlawed at my middle.

Guests: Hunter Harris & Peyton Dix
Host: Les Alfred
Date: August 11, 2026
This week’s episode dives deep into the idea of self-identity outside of professional labels and job titles. Host Les Alfred welcomes best friends and collaborators Hunter Harris and Peyton Dix—co-hosts of the pop culture podcast Let Me Say This—for a lively, honest, and often hilarious conversation. Together, they explore pop culture’s influence on self-concept, the evolution of their creative partnership, building “luck,” navigating online discourse, and the importance of separating your worth from your career. Throughout, the women reflect on creative pivots, fears, embracing imperfection, and growing past societal expectations to live expansive, authentic lives.

Timestamps: 14:21–19:55
“When you meet someone, it’s one thing. When you become friends, it’s different. And we became friends when Hunter said that our teacher was hot and he wasn’t, but I was right.” (15:21 – Peyton Dix)
“We want someone who understands the show that we want to make. ...If this is where the show ends, if we can’t find someone who feels locked and loaded with this version of it, we’re fine not doing it.” (19:36-20:08 – Hunter Harris)
Timestamps: 21:15–24:16
“A lot of people in the cultural commentary space... it’s just like, all shock value. It’s like, who can get off the hottest take the absolute quickest. ...But it’s always, like, thoughtful, and it’s not doing it just to have the shock value.” (21:15 – Les Alfred)
“I don’t have any Hot Take. I just have opinions.” (22:44 – Hunter Harris) “The only thing I could think of is like, I just be calling... just be gay. So I be telling people that, and they get upset sometimes.” (21:56 – Peyton Dix)

“I loved retraining my brain to be like, I’m not the comma next to my name. Like, I am ...just Peyton Dix, and that’s gonna have to be enough. And that’ll show me who gives a f*** about me low key.” (46:39 – Peyton Dix)
“It was that same sort of ego death of, okay, so who am I if I’m not like, hi, I’m Hunter, and I work for New York—my favorite magazine to read.” (46:42–47:07 – Hunter Harris)

“We teach women to shrink themselves. Not anymore.”
(10:10 – Peyton Dix)
Lively, unfiltered, and deeply authentic, this episode is equal parts cultural analysis, self-development seminar, and hilarious group chat. Listeners are reminded to value themselves beyond their résumés, embrace rest and uncertainty, and resist the urge to shrink in the face of others’ expectations or the tidal forces of internet commentary. As Les, Hunter, and Peyton demonstrate, luck comes from the willingness to move, pivot, laugh, and be unapologetically yourself, even (and especially) when you’re still figuring it all out.
