Hey, what's going on guys? It's your host Mike Garvey with the side Hustle Squad podcast coming at you from the branded Bull Studio here on a Tuesday. Start of the week we are moving right along. We're doing really well in regards to coastal fertilization. The app one is all done for fertilization, weed control. We're moving into mosquito and tick control and then we're finishing up weed controls. I'm actually out in the field this week, you know, helping out on some of that and it's so nice. It's like, you know, you got, I really do love being out in the field because that's why I started this company and you know, being away from my regular day to day and I love it so much and you kind of take it for granted when you start building this up and you know you're not doing it as much. So I, I do love being out there and doing, doing stuff so doing the services, meeting the customers, popping in my AirPods and just going to work and doing listen to my music, my podcast, my audiobooks, everything and just doing, doing the job and I love it so much. But so that's the update on that man shop build. We just crossed a big finish line on final site plan approval. All that should be pulling permits this week and then let's like start moving some, moving some land. Really excited about that. Had to tell Larry to calm down. He wanted to start making calls Friday afternoon getting everything done and I was like no one's going to answer. It's 3:30 on a Friday. Let's wait till Monday, let's wait till the beginning of the week and start doing stuff. So can't wait to share some updates on that. And and then the robotic outdoor power equipment distributors coming right along building out the mobile showroom, mobile trailer, all crests. We are Jersey Shores Crest dealer and want to talk about that A little bit update you guys on on that stuff. Something to think about. We did our first robotic install. We have we are in the officially installing robotic Crest mowers and I want to break it down what it's really like. Want to share some behind the scenes stuff. Some things about our first installs through roped from setup. Couple different different things, customer reactions and where these robots can actually, you know where they can make sense and you know if you're thinking about getting into offering robotic mowing to your customers, that's something that can definitely be done. And you just want to stay ahead of where the industry's going. Really just want to talk about what we're doing and we'll talk about it. Let's take a quick break here from the show sponsors and we'll come right back.

And talking about the roped our new venture Robotic Outdoor Power Equipment distributors. We are Jersey Shores Crest dealer so our regional rep Chad Woodring came down and we did our first install of a crest KR174. It is a the acre and a half and that's saying that you that's for an acre and a half as you go up in the model that's the quicker the robot will cut even a smaller piece of property. So again everyone sees okay, it's ready to go. Wow, that was quick. And it. It was and these are going to get quicker as we go. There's a couple things to it. It's not the Chris is has developed a kind of a plug and play 4x4i pilot that does self mapping. These again these robots do require mapping but it's very easy. Everything's app based so it's very easy to use. The app is super easy. There's a couple steps, setting it up and you know, entering the serial number, stuff like that. You can't just activate it without, you know, all the proper stuff from a dealer. And it was very easy. And man, I mean, a nice cut cut Larry's lawn a couple hours and then returned back charged and been going ever since. You know what people ask, you know, why did you get into this? You had a lot going on. We found a void in dealership support with Crest. We used all the Crest chainsaws, pole saws, hedge trimmers, blowers, weed whackers. We've been using it for well over a year now and we love it. I, all the guys have adapted to it. It's, you know, you put it in their hands and give them no other option. That's what they're going to use. And there's initial resistance. But they got over it very quickly. And I don't know why there was resistance. They, I don't, I just don't think they just understood exactly what it was. And you know, you see gas prices soaring, stuff like that. Now you don't have to deal with rebuilt carburetors, piston rings, all that stuff, blockages, it's there. So that's why we love that the product. But our closest dealer was over an hour away. So we approached Cress actually at Equip and the team there. And we've been through the process ever since. Now we're building out our showroom which will be at our shop, at our lot, but also be able to take it on the road. So, you know, we're building that out. We're offering robotic mowing to our customers and you guys can also, you know, the way we want to look at it as we're selling them a robot that they can own or there we can have a subscription based service that we own the robot and per, they have a subscription based, again, subscription service that we still come weed, whack edge, blow off. But the robot will be cutting every couple days, every day, whatever. However you want to set it up, it is helping with again, efficiency being ahead of the curve, setting these things up in the neighborhood. And people got to see them. They're showstoppers. I mean they're, they're. People are just stopping and just watching. And it's very cool to watch. It's very therapeutic. It's like you just watch it go. You don't want to really leave it. And it was very cool. So the setup, again, it's not plug and play, but you have to Do a Couple Things app is very easy. There's a couple apps, there's a fleet one and then an RTK one for the homeowner. So we're learning how to set these up prior to get everything set up and then just come to the owner's property, the homeowner's property. A lot of stuff is going to be done prior to. So you're not sitting there, twiddle, messing around on their property. They're like, wow, that took six hours. How can this be that easy? Let's do the prep work prior to. And we're learning. What are people going to think when they see it? What are the questions they're going to ask? What hesitations are we seeing right now? Price, reliability, theft. Some adoption people are. Some are early adopters, some are skeptics. And, you know, as I go through the quoting and the different things, talking to customers, this is what I'm seeing. I want to know more about it. I want to talk to you more about it. Okay, how does this work? How does that work? Coming up with questions. Just like questions people have with coastal fertilization kind of talking about, oh, well, what is your program? And now we have an answer for everything. This. I'm learning how to navigate those different obstacles. You know, there's some things to, to look at about mapping and, okay, if it goes off the, you know, how close can you get to the edge of the lawn? Edging is still going to be needed. Weed whacking is still going to be needed. This is not replacing cruise. Right. What are we doing about obstacles on the lawn? What are we doing about big sticks and other things like that? Kind of learning all about that. But again, we are ahead of it. I would love to set up 20 this year. Let's make everything realistic. Let's not go, hey, I want to blow this up and do all this. But let's work at different revenue, let's look at different customers. Let's homeowners. Okay. Other landscapers for the handheld stuff and for the robots. Working with a local school system. I'm setting up a demo on the baseball field here at Tom's River North High School, kind of working in conjunction with them. They have a labor problem. They used to have tons of guys. Now they're kind of. They have 18 schools in this district. Massive. It's a lot of cutting. It's a lot of. Lot of stuff. So let's kind of work with them and let's see where this goes. Municipalities, golf courses. I mean, it's it's the possibilities are really out there. It's just a matter of let's get our feet wet with the installs, let's do 20 installs this year and let's see where it goes. So really just wanted to give an update on what's going on with the robotics stuff. It's really, it's not replacing us. Remember, it's changing. But I encourage you all to start learning about it now and, you know, kind of adapting and being open minded to it. Don't just dismiss it and write it off. So we'll leave you with that. Glad to give you the update on all the robotic outdoor power equipment stuff and we'll catch you on the next one.

Side Hustle Squad Podcast – Ep 327
The Future of Lawn Care? Inside Our First Robotic Mower Installs!
Host: Mike Garvey
Date: April 21, 2026
In this episode, host Mike Garvey dives into his lawn care company’s exciting venture into robotic mowing technology. He offers a candid, behind-the-scenes look at their very first installation of a Cress robotic mower, breaking down the practicalities, customer reactions, challenges, and opportunities offered by automated turf care. Mike provides insights for side hustlers and business owners considering the leap into robotic lawn care, emphasizing how innovation can coexist with traditional service and create new revenue streams.
Mike shares that his company is moving successfully through the spring rush: fertilization, weed control, and beginning mosquito/tick control.
He expresses his enjoyment of being back in the field, reminiscing about the hands-on roots of his business:
“I really do love being out in the field… you kind of take it for granted when you start building this up and you know you’re not doing it as much.” (01:18)
The shop build has crossed a key milestone, with site plan approvals in place and permits expected this week.
Excitement about the new venture: building a mobile showroom for robotic Cress mowers, prepping for multi-site demos and sales.
The team installed their first Cress KR174 robotic mower (capable of mowing up to 1.5 acres).
Process details:
The mower’s setup was “very easy”; it’s app-based and involves basic steps like entering the serial number.
Not fully plug-and-play: mapping of the property is required, but Cress’s self-mapping tech helps.
Customer reaction was positive and fascinated:
“People are just stopping and just watching. It’s very cool to watch. It’s very therapeutic.” (07:22)
Mike emphasizes efficiency: most setup work is now done prior to approaching a customer’s property, minimizing downtime on-site.
Two main models considered:
Mike frames robotics as a complement, not a replacement, to crews:
“Edging is still going to be needed. Weed whacking is still going to be needed. This is not replacing crews.” (09:43)
Mike’s goal for 2026: Install 20 robotic units in the local area.
Strategic markets include not only homeowners, but other landscapers, school districts (notably, the local Tom’s River North High School and its 18-campus district), municipalities, and golf courses.
Practical, grounded approach to growth:
“Let’s make everything realistic. Let’s not go ‘Hey, I want to blow this up and do all this.’ But let’s work at different revenue, let’s look at different customers…” (10:43)
Robotics isn’t about eliminating jobs—it’s about evolving the business and staying competitive.
Mike encourages other side hustlers and lawn care pros to start learning now:
“I encourage you all to start learning about it now and, you know, kind of adapting and being open minded to it. Don’t just dismiss it and write it off.” (11:34)
Mike Garvey (on the field work):
“I do love being out there and doing, doing stuff so… doing the services, meeting the customers, popping in my AirPods and just going to work.” (01:28)
On the appeal of robotic mowers:
“They’re showstoppers. I mean, people are just stopping and just watching. It’s very cool to watch. It’s very therapeutic.” (07:22)
About adapting to battery equipment:
“There’s initial resistance. But they got over it very quickly. And I don’t know why there was resistance. They…I just don’t think they just understood exactly what it was.” (06:31)
Framing robotics as a service enhancer:
“It’s not replacing us. Remember, it’s changing. But I encourage you all to start learning about it now and…be open minded to it.” (11:34)
Mike Garvey’s episode is a candid, practical exploration of integrating robotics into a traditional lawn care business. He contextualizes the shift with personal stories and real business challenges. The tone is optimistic yet grounded, full of actionable insights and a spirit of innovation without hype. For entrepreneurs considering robotics in the green industry, this episode is a valuable primer on how to think about technology adoption, customer education, and sustainable growth.
