Vanessa joined Suits on Day one as Jenny Griffith, appearing on the pilot and nine episodes total. And following Suits, Vanessa joined friend of the Pod and wife of Patrick Troy and Bellisario on Pretty Little Liars. And recently she wrapped the CBS drama.

Right before you've gotten the audition for a little show. At the time, it might have been called Illegal Mind.

What was going on in your life, career at all in 2010, right before you got this show? Any insight into what was happening, if anything, if not.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Was Suits your first job ever?

[Vanessa Ray]

No, it was not my first job ever, but I was. I just. I remember this audition as clearly as anything because it was the first time that I thought, I'm gonna just be a cool girl who doesn't wear a lot of makeup. And it's a hot day in New York City, and everyone is. And, like, the description was like, girl. It wasn't like, girl who does anything. Girl who. Whatever that was.

[Patrick J. Adams]

The breakdown for Jenny was just like.

[Vanessa Ray]

It was like, girl.

[Tom Lipinski]

Girl.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Listener. You should see the, like, swaggy, like, situation. That's. The wiggle that's happening in the chair is gonna. Just says it all. Just picture it. She's girl, and she was girl.

[Vanessa Ray]

And I was like, I'm a cougar in New York City, and I'm gonna come in without makeup, and I'm gonna wear shorts.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Oh, you had.

You wore shorts?

I was. I didn't care. I walked into that edition, and all the girls were for real.

[Patrick J. Adams]

They were wearing suits for the role of Jenny. Or were you going in for Rachel?

[Vanessa Ray]

I was going in for Jenny.

What?

[Vanessa Ray]

And I went in, and all the girls were in suits and all because it was, like, legal.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Right, but what scenes were you doing that would have.

[Vanessa Ray]

Our first scene in the loft with.

The three of us in the loft. Right.

[Vanessa Ray]

It was that scene. But I remember it was a super hot summer day, and all the guys were in suits and they were all sweating, and all the girls were so uncomfortable. And I walked in in shorts, and they were like, who the is this girl thinks you're in?

[Patrick J. Adams]

Did you feel. Did you feel empowered? Did you feel empowered at that moment? Or were you feeling like, I've made a horrible mistake, I should be in suits? Or were you feeling your decision at that point?

[Vanessa Ray]

I thought I was just doing something Different?

[Patrick J. Adams]

Hell yeah.

Well, girl in TV outfit is a T shirt, leather jacket of various colors and denim, like tight denim and then like a little booty. That's a girl on tv.

Yeah. Cause sometimes it's dark green, Tom. Sometimes it's red.

Did you get any direction in your acting in the room?

[Vanessa Ray]

No, ma'am.

No, no, ma'am. It was yours. It was yours. You just.

And can I ask quickly, where were you at career wise at this point? Doing lots of guest stars. Had you already done your own series? I don't remember what you had done some pretty little. That Pretty Little Liars hadn't happened yet.

[Vanessa Ray]

Oh, that was after I did. I had. I'd like guest starred on like every show in New York at that point.

[Sarah Rafferty]

All the Law and Orders.

[Vanessa Ray]

Well, I didn't do any Law and Order actually. Speaking of.

[Tom Lipinski]

Whoa.

[Vanessa Ray]

I'm the only actor in New York that didn't get to do it. Sorry, Tom.

Geez, I know you got to here. I was respecting you for a minute.

[Vanessa Ray]

The big job was Damage.

I remember Damages. You came in having done Damages and I had just watched it and I was sort of intimidated because it was so good.

Glenn Close.

Like you got close to Glenn Close?

Uh huh.

Yeah, I did all the scenes with her.

I just broken up with my boyfriend, who's now my husband, and Ted Danson was like knocked on my door and was like, hey, I heard you just went through a breakup. Don't worry about it, girl. You got this, like, really great. He was really great. And so. And then. Yeah, that was, that was kind of where I was at as I was like guest starring on Joe's. I been on Broadway, I'd done a couple shows and. And then I auditioned for.

[Patrick J. Adams]

So you're coming into suits. It's another pilot that's being made. Yeah, people seem cool. Whatever. Yeah, that's it.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yeah.

[Vanessa Ray]

I knew nothing about it.

[Tom Lipinski]

Yeah, totally don't get it. Don't get ahead of it. I'm not. Don't put words in her mouth. Did people seem cool or.

[Patrick J. Adams]

People seemed really cool. Right.

[Tom Lipinski]

I mean, they were really cool and talented.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Especially the guy up front seemed really charming.

You know, it was love at first sight when I saw you.

That's true. So, Tom, why don't you step in, tell us what's going on in 20, 2010.

[Tom Lipinski]

Well, I am. I have a day job. And that day job is a full job, full time job. I worked at limewire. Any oldies know. Remember limewire? Remember that?

[Sarah Rafferty]

That would be me. I'm an oldie and I don't know what you're talking about.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It's a tech thing. So you're.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Oh, God, I'm out on all sides.

[Tom Lipinski]

It was downloading illegal music and files.

[Tom Lipinski]

It was a. It was an illegal file. Well, it wasn't illegal. I mean, it ultimately was illegal.

Oh, wait a minute. So I remember this. You were a building manager and I remember you. I was. I'm always impressed because I wish I were handier. And you had cool boots that building managers wore. Remember his boots? His red wings? He was very cool. But you were the. I always, in my mind, you were the building manager at like an apartment building. It was at an office building. It was at limewire.

It was an Office building. I worked for Limewire, and it was. I'm not kidding. Two blocks away from that loft scene where we shot in Tribeca.

Oh, right.

So, like, I.

[Patrick J. Adams]

No, no, it was Brooke Shields.

Yeah. Tom, do you want to. Do you want to circle back to the. No. In my career, I'd done some small stuff. I was nowhere near as preeminent as Vanessa Ray at the time.

I'd done a couple of small things. I'd done a movie. I'd done a. What at least at the time I was told was one of the few HBO pilots that never got picked up. They were just like, oh, these always go. And then it didn't. It was like, aw, yeah, we love that. That's a good start.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah.

[Tom Lipinski]

And I do. I remember I auditioned in, like, in a weird building that I never auditioned in ever again. Over in. Again. Tribeca.

[Vanessa Ray]

Yeah.

[Tom Lipinski]

And Bray was there for me.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Kevin Bray, listener, to remind you, as the director of the pilot and then also the producing director of the show for the first or one season.

[Sarah Rafferty]

He was the producing director for two seasons.

Two seasons, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

And Korsh was there, too. So the two of them were in the room, and I think that was the callback, not the first audition, but I was one of those guys.

Humble Bragg. I was at the callback. I didn't have to go to the first one.

[Tom Lipinski]

No, no, no, I did. No, I did go to the first call, and they were just like. I mean, I guess they were, like, calling back, but it was. There were a bunch of. There were a bunch of people at the callback, and both of them were so like, just sort of, like, very on the level that I was like, are either of you. Do either of you guys like what I'm doing? Like, they didn't. If they were enjoying it, they didn't tip their. Tip their hand. I'll say it that way.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Playing it close to the. Close to the head. Did you guys leave the auditions Thinking, yeah, I think I probably maybe got that job.

[Tom Lipinski]

No.

[Vanessa Ray]

I was one of those. I was one of those sweaty guys wearing a suit that Vanessa probably walked by in her little shorts.

That sounds right.

And I did it. And, you know, they asked me a couple questions. I was like, you know, I. Yeah, yeah, it's. And then they're like, all right, thanks. We'll see you. I was like, well, there goes another one.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And then you find out you got it.

[Tom Lipinski]

And then I found out I got it.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And I was like, so what were your impressions? Your impression was, this is a girl, and who knows what it's going to be.

[Vanessa Ray]

Anything.

[Patrick J. Adams]

What was your impression of Trevor and. Yeah, what was your impression?

[Tom Lipinski]

I mean, it was like he was the ne'er do well buddy. Which sort of kind of how that stuck. But, you know, what was that? The first. The pilot was the only thing we had, and it was just like me being stoned and essentially just trying to lie to my girlfriend and stuff. Like right out of the gate, I was like, okay, yeah, I think.

[Sarah Rafferty]

I think I get it when you say that stuck. Do you feel that you've been typecast since I legitimately.

[Vanessa Ray]

No.

[Tom Lipinski]

I mean, I always. When I first started acting, I had like a self conception. I was like, oh, I'm like the sort of how I am in general. I was like, oh, I'll be like the nice, like, guy next door. I'll be like the buddy. I'll be the friend. I'll be like the harmless, like, oh, look at this. He's. Look at this guy. And instead, I'm always like a killer, a bad guy, a rapist, a man with a secret.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You know, it's so weird. Cause you're just the sweetest guy in the world.

[Vanessa Ray]

He is the weirdest. What do you say that about you?

[Sarah Rafferty]

I think it is. Do you have any, like, idea why that happens? Like, what is it? What do you. What are you bringing to your auditions? Like, what do you think about that? And how's the experience of playing those. Those roles? Because those are juicy.

[Tom Lipinski]

They're juicy. I, you know, a heavy brow.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Like, honestly, seriously serious, though.

[Tom Lipinski]

But honestly, you know, you could. I could spin a whole story and emotional, you know, golden thread all the way going back to the early trauma. But I was like, I think then when people put a, like, light on my face, people were like, whoa, what's with the eyes? Geez.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You know, because I had redhead casting. I talked about this on this podcast, like, leading up to being on suits. There was a lot of, like, bad girl. Ooh. Like, what's she doing?

[Vanessa Ray]

I mean, I wonder if it's changed at all, because I do think that there is a thing that happens to you when you go on camera and you're lit. You're like, oh, I guess I am a this or I am a that.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Well, you were doing girls.

[Tom Lipinski]

Like, yeah.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You know what I mean? Way, though. I'm not kidding. Yes.

[Vanessa Ray]

Literally, you're like. You're a girl. Like, you're. You're like. I'm like, oh, I guess I'm just archetype. I'm an archetype girl. Like, yeah, redhead, like, hooded eyes. You even said, I remember. I can't. I don't remember anything, but I remember shooting that pilot.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Oh, tell us, Tell us.

[Vanessa Ray]

But I remember you saying, like, you go. You were saying about Patrick, you go, look at him. Just an open face.

[Patrick J. Adams]

No, he did not.

Yes, he did. Yes, he did. He said that to me, and I.

Was like, like, privately?

[Vanessa Ray]

Yes.

Like, not as a joke. What does that mean, not as a joke?

He was like, open heart. Like. Like, you just have, like, this open face. When we saw you on camera, he's.

Like, honestly, Honestly, that sound. That sounds like something I would have said in 2010 when I was all up on a black camera, Camera, camera story, you know, imagistic storytelling. But I do, of course, I mean, I could say that now that like. Like, open beauty, like, you're an open fate. That's, like the best compliment you could give.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It was. It is. I don't exactly know what it means, but it touches my heart when I.

[Vanessa Ray]

Hear it all the time. I'm like, do. Am I. I'm going to scene with it. I'm like, am I having an open face? Like, that was a really big compliment from Tom, and I was like, I want to have an open face as well.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Were you saying that from the point of view, like, that you think your face was closed or just. I think recognize.

[Tom Lipinski]

Well, I think. I think an open face is a couple of things. I think it's like. It's telegenic, right? So it's like, you look great on camera. You, all three of you look great on camera. So right. Right out of the gate, it's like an open face means, like, oh, you're beautiful.

[Sarah Rafferty]

So nice.

[Vanessa Ray]

You have the most, but.

[Tom Lipinski]

But also, like, open meaning, like, I can see. You know, you can see the wheels turning, right? You can see as things come in and then come back out. You can See them processing. So it's open. So it's not, you know, you're not hiding the process.

I see. So it's like, what a great compliment. Open face. Great compliment.

No, and I have been relishing that, watching these episodes. I'm just thinking of one that we're gonna talk about tomorrow. And there's just, like. What I love about Mike is how when he gets to be quiet, how much of his interior monologue is kind of what your monologue is like. You're, like, experiencing the world of suits through Mike because of what Patrick brings. Exactly. Like what you said, Tom, that openness, that thing that we can be a part of that.

When I said that, I thought I was like, oh, this show's gonna work. Like, this show's gonna be a great show because. What a compliment.

Yeah.

Well, let's talk a bit about your first days on set. Now, we're. I want to watch our loft scene, but I don't. We don't necessarily need to jump into it first, but for me, it was like. It's obviously, I think the first time the three of us are all together. Was it the first scene that we shot? Do we remember that? Do you remember when was the last time you guys watched the pilot?

[Tom Lipinski]

Oof.

[Vanessa Ray]

No idea. I have no idea.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Like, when it came out.

[Vanessa Ray]

Supposed to have a. Like, probably when it came out.

[Sarah Rafferty]

When it came out. Like, you haven't seen it, right?

Okay. Can I ask the questions before we look at the scene? Actually, Tom, since you're here.

Yeah, I'm here.

When I saw this on the day, I said to Patrick, I said, which one of you gents had the courage to say to the other, hey, bro, can. Can we make up a handshake? I just feel like that's very brave. It was scripted. That's why I just let me live in my own lore.

[Patrick J. Adams]

No, no, no, no. Someone had to do it. But it was based on. At first we thought. Oh, man. We came up. When I watched it, I was like, I think we just did that.

[Tom Lipinski]

Yeah.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And then I looked at the script, and it does say they do some sort of cool handshake thing. So that was the impetus.

[Sarah Rafferty]

But what I'm saying is you haven't met, and at some point, you're going to have to Figure out the thing. So which guy says first? Like, do you want to go back to my trailer and work on the handshake?

[Patrick J. Adams]

Hey, man, you want to go. You want to head back to the room?

[Tom Lipinski]

Do you want to come into my double banner and work on handshakes?

[Sarah Rafferty]

We should probably work on it, right?

[Vanessa Ray]

It's probably kind of some. I mean, they ask for it.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Like, what do you do?

[Patrick J. Adams]

I don't know. Do you remember how that. How that came about?

[Tom Lipinski]

I kind of do. I think that Kevin was there. He was like. Yeah. Like, was it. Maybe it was Kevin or maybe it was Aaron. I don't even know.

[Vanessa Ray]

God, your mom and dad were there to watch you guys make it.

[Tom Lipinski]

[Sarah Rafferty]

Kevin, that's so embarrassing.

[Vanessa Ray]

I think it's so embarrassing.

Kevin. I don't think we were being watched. I think we went off into the corner and did it and then, like, presented it.

I think we, like, went out into the corner and we were just like. What about. What about a punching thing?

And the reason. One of the reasons I want to bring it up is because I. In all honesty, in all seriousness, you guys did not know each other independently before you got there. And the level of chemistry that you brought to this pilot without, like, a thing to watch in advance, without knowing exactly what the world is. There was a special alchemy with the three of you, and I know that as a viewer. So let's go into.

Let's watch it. And. Yeah, I think that you.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Really special that you brought that.

You guys look exactly the same. It's so.

I mean our voices are so high.

[Tom Lipinski]

I was gonna say. Yeah, Vanessa looks just exactly the same.

[Patrick J. Adams]

She's not hearing it, but my face.

Looks like 10 pounds of mashed potatoes in a five pound box. Wow, that's great.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I don't say this lightly because I have the same thing. Watching. Doing this whole project that we're doing is very uncomfortable. We've talked about it a lot. I don't watch anything that I do. I cannot watch it. And so go back and watch. This is hard.

[Tom Lipinski]

Yep.

[Patrick J. Adams]

But that scene was one scene that was so joyful to watch for the reason that you just brought up, which was to think of three actors that didn't know each other at all. Like we probably met that day.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Sure.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And we are tasked and that fun thing we get to do as actors to be like, hey, be best friends now who've known each other forever. Who have a lot of history. You don't have a lot of scripts to base that history on. It's not like a film where you're given the script and then you learn later. You have all these pages to then be like, okay, I have to play. We don't know anything. We just know that you're my best friend and you're his girlfriend and that there's probably something here.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You came in with it. I saw it. He came in with it. Right when he said he's setting you up. Of looked at him and said, oh.

[Patrick J. Adams]

O yeah, perfectly played. Cuz it's not too much. It's not like, oh, no, I'm hurt. But it's.

[Sarah Rafferty]

And then you put your hands on her head to say goodbye. Like. Like she's your not sister.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Like we've been friends forever.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yes.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Like. Like me kissing you.

[Vanessa Ray]

There's hair there and it's not weird.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I feel like another show would have me kiss you and then Trevor would look a little like what's going on? But these people are so close that I can kiss you on the cheek or whatever. I hold your face and kiss you and it's totally normal and everything's okay. Yes. And so I left that scene.

Feeling like I love these guys. I know them.

12 of them. Obviously, I'm pretty proud of that motorcycle that I put. Put in.

Which, by the way, fun fact, I don't know if you remember, and maybe we'll look at the scene, but when we have our fight later on in the season, remember we're in Toronto and they have to try and replicate this loft in Toronto. And they. They couldn't. And so there was sort of like we were in the corner of some other apartment. And the motorcycle is in that scene.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Too, but it's a different motorcycle because Brook Shields is. Has some gold.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It's definitely a different motorcycle, but it's also a motorcycle in the most inappropriate. It's as if you put a motorcycle in like a one bedroom apartment, like the dining room, like. Like there's for it whatsoever.

[Vanessa Ray]

Squeezed it in.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah. Apparently you do ride motorcycles. Yeah, obviously.

[Tom Lipinski]

Obviously. I was waiting for them to do the insert of me riding away on my motorcycle on my Kawasaki Ninja. The big thing that I remember about that was like, Kevin wanted me to eat the cheeseburger. He wanted me to be taking a bite of the cheeseburger, being like, that's the best cheeseburger. And I remember, like, just before this, having read, I was like, you know, you're reading the acting books and all this stuff that, like, you're going to acting classes.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah.

[Tom Lipinski]

And I remember reading somebody being like, never eat on camera because if you get like 60 takes in and you got 60 bites of the cheeseburger. And I remember pitching to Kevin, I was like, I think it's better if he's like so stoned. He's just like, you know, ideating about the cheeseburger and what it was like. And he was like, all right, fine. And I was like, I think I saved myself a lot of cheeseburger eating that night.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Very smart.

[Vanessa Ray]

That's a good point too. I feel like they like, they kind of. I don't know how to say this in a nice way, but they kind of got out of our way.

[Patrick J. Adams]

They did, yeah.

[Vanessa Ray]

In a lot of ways. They let us kind of find each other and be in the room together and laugh and joke, whatever. I don't remember a lot of people being around us, like, telling us, like, we're managing it. I remember thinking, like, if I show up on day one and we have chemistry, the three, this will work. If there's no chemistry, then who cares? And then there was chemistry. And it really was like, I made the joke, but I was like. It was like, love, first sight. I love these guys. And it was very simple to build from that.

[Sarah Rafferty]

I remember that in the trailer. So I never had any scenes with you guys.

[Vanessa Ray]

Right.

[Sarah Rafferty]

And I was traveling back and forth to LA at the time. But I remember coming back and we cross paths in the trailer. I was coming to work and you guys were leaving, and you were going to Great Flags or whatever. What is it? Outside of Toronto.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You were going to Canada's Wonderland.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You were going to Canada's Wonderland, and.

[Vanessa Ray]

You guys were buds.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You guys were butts. Like, you were a gang and you did fun things. And I remember I had maybe been away for an episode or something, and I come back and I'm like, oh, my God. Look, like they have a whole life. Like, the young ones have this whole life out in the world with each other. And it was electric. Just like the excitement if somebody was taking off their makeup and you guys were getting ready to go. And I think I was like, don't forget your sunscreen, kids. And. And it was. It's the one. It's the one memory I have. And it was really an. I don't like you. You're like, I don't remember anything. I remembered that. I remember what side of the trailer I was on. I remember just being like, wow, look at that. I can feel it. It's. It's. It's a feeling.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I had it immediately with you guys in the pilot and then. And it always hurt that you then went away, because it wasn't the whole. It was a piece of the show. And the whole show is about Mike having this other life and meeting all these new people, and that's the focus of the show. And so we had this great chemistry, and we kind of fell in love with each other, and we were like, this is great. It was a whole different energy that I could go and play these great scenes, which is another one we'll watch where I tell you the truth about what I've been doing. And you can tell, like, how much fun I'm having in that scene, how happy I am today.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You say you trust me.

[Vanessa Ray]

Oh, no. Right?

[Sarah Rafferty]

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah.

What about fan reactions you guys like, do you remember at the time it was we were all kind of less plugged in, so we don't have a lot of memory about how the viewers were responding to characters. But I'm just wondering for each of you, like being part of a love triangle or being the bad guy, the bad influence, like, did that haunt you in any way? Or did you did do you get that now? Maybe after the resurgence? Are you recognized for it? Like, what's your experience with the show out in the world?

[Tom Lipinski]

I had the. Funny. I don't think it was, like, the first time that somebody was just like, oh, you're the guy on that show. But it was definitely the most memorable. I was on the 6 train. I'd gotten in a bleecker. I was going way uptown, and this dude gets on after me, and I'm facing, like, the doors that he gets on, and he's kind of got, like, flat. He's got flowers. He's doing, like, a flower delivery. He's got the big backpack and stuff. And he sees me and, like, stares at me, but, like, with a grimace, and he's not doing anything. I was like, I think. I don't know what I did, but it. It wasn't. You know, generally, people walk by and you get the. You understand when somebody's recognized you. That's like a very common. But this guy was. This guy was, like, standing me up, and I was like, oh, my God. And then he comes over to me right as I'm getting off, and he was like, like, stop around with Mike. And I was like, no way. But I was completely thrown. I was like, who the is Mike? What are you talking about? Like, this guy has me confused for. Oh, is this.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Is this in the. Is this in the first season or, like, way later?

[Tom Lipinski]

No, no, no. It was like. I think it was season two. So it was still early, but I was like. He was already like, you know, he's.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Acting like he's basically, like, internalized it. Internalized.

[Tom Lipinski]

It was like, go easy on Mike. Like, Mike's my guy. And I was like, oh, right.

[Vanessa Ray]

How long do you think he thought about it before he said that to you? He was so excited.

[Tom Lipinski]

Yeah. He was, like, going to be in the show with me.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And I was like, wherever you are, sir, thank you for your service. I appreciate it.

That's what happens. You watch a racing scene and you're like, oh, they're sweet. And then you come back, we're like, oh, but they're so sweet.

I did a whole diatribe on like, I'm not a team thing because I'm actually on a show with teens who. There's like a whole team thing that I'm like, I'm just team. The girl on her own, she's figuring out it's not who. It's like, just her. Her life. But when I watch a. So I go on a diatribe with Patrick where I'm like, I'm not doing it. I will not.

[Vanessa Ray]

I'm participating. I'm not participating.

[Sarah Rafferty]

And then I'm like, okay, sorry. I'm team Jenny right now. I know I'm fickle. But then. And then I go to Rachel.

[Patrick J. Adams]

So do you guys still get it now? Now that the show had this like, crazy Netflix resurgence, is there like a renewed. Like, I would.

[Vanessa Ray]

Yes. Yes. It's weird. I was in the back of a Uber on the way to the airport and this guy was telling. I was like, oh, you have such a. He was in like a, you know, a nice car. I was like, oh, it has a nice car. Pick me up, whatever. And he's like, well, yeah, I'm just, you know, I'm trying to, like, dress nicer. He says. And I go, oh, that's interesting. Okay, well, why are you trying to dress nicer? And he's like, well, I'm watching this show suits and like, they just dress so sharp on that show. It's such a good show. You ever seen it? And I was like, I've seen it. It's great. Yeah, it's really good. And I was like, you kind of look like one of the girls on it. And I was like, oh, what a compliment. Thanks. And he was like, you look just like Jenny. And this is like out. It's taking an hour to get to the airport, right? And I was like, yeah, I. I kind of look like her. I didn't know what to do cuz I was so nervous as I get in his car. But he was like, so invested in the show. He wanted to change the way he dressed.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It was fascinating. It was so good. I'm in good health. I am in good health. There is a beginning of some arthritis in some places, you guys. Oh, no, wait. Like, in my neck and stuff. And I'm like, does. Are you. Are you telling me that I can't, like, ski? And he's like, no, no, I think you're.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You're fine.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yeah, no, I. I'm lucky. I, I, I really want to acknowledge I'm not taking this lightly. Like, I had a great scan, and I'm super, super, super grateful. Tips, tips, tips, tips. Thank you. But all that is to say the lovely doctor Radiologist gentleman that when we went onto the zoom, he immediately was like, oh, I didn't recognize your name, but I love your show, and I watch it with my wife. And that was, like, our show through Covid, and it was so fun. And then we get into, like, my spleen and my uterine lining. My. All the different two clones. No, it was really interest. I was like. We just had this conversation about the show. And now speaking of being, like, recognized, that is what.

He knows you more intimately than anyone's ever known you, by the way.

That's what my aorta looks like. It's my aorta.

Well, speaking of playing the girl, do you have a lot of love scenes in your career? Did you have to do a lot of that?

No, I was famously on a soap opera was one of my first jobs, and I never had a love interest.

Wait, what was it? Yeah, what was your character then?

As the World Turns, I played Teresa Ciccone. She was a chef. And they kept trying to put me with like, older gentlemen. And I was like, I don't get it.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Oh, boy, that's great.

I don't get it.

[Vanessa Ray]

I don't get it. And they were like, okay, forget it. Well, this show's ending. Who cares?

[Sarah Rafferty]

Do you have a love interest on Blue Bloods?

[Vanessa Ray]

Yes. Well, I was. I got. I mean, it was such a love interest that we ended up getting married on the show.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Oh, right, I saw that on your Instagram.

And then at like, then it, like, like, you know, gutted the storyline. And then all the audience was mad at us.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Were they mad? Did you have to deal with that? Why? What happened? Like, how do you feel?

[Vanessa Ray]

Because, like, they like the will they, won't they? And then when they get together, the audience over it.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Now what are they fighting?

[Tom Lipinski]

I'm over it. Who cares?

[Vanessa Ray]

Cuz, like, if you're fighting, the audience like, likes that, like tension. But if you're fighting as a married couple, they're like, oh, my gosh. What? This is a terrible relationship.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Get out of it.

Kind of scary.

Did you have to like, tune out that fan response? Like, how did, how did it affect your work?

[Vanessa Ray]

Yeah, for sure. Well, I did. Well, see, this is the tricky part is if you have people in your life that do watch the show, even if you don't watch the show.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yeah.

[Vanessa Ray]

And they say comments to you and you have to like, say, mom, you have to like, turn off the Google or like, I'm sorry that people. Mom, stop reading the comments. Like, don't tell me anything about it. Because I don't know if you had that too. Where people were like, we want them together, we want them together, we want them together. And then like, like you get together and then people have opinions about that.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Wait a minute, wait a minute. I'm doing a deep dive here. I should have done it before Blue Bloods was on television for 14 years.

[Vanessa Ray]

Tom, weren't you on. Weren't you on, like, one of the first seasons of Blue Bloods?

Yes, I did an episode. It must have been, like, two or three. Season. Two or three. It was early.

[Vanessa Ray]

It was early because the reason I thought of it is because I know that by season 13, they opened it up to have people who had been on the first couple seasons.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Oh, like to come back because they had run out of actors.

[Vanessa Ray]

Tom will come back.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Oh, Tom, what's your favorite role that you've played?

[Tom Lipinski]

Ooh, that's a good. I mean, you know, it's. I don't know how you guys feel. It's always different. It's like, the answer is seldom, like, the thing that turned out the best, that it was, like, the most successful. I mean, this, I think, was a unique circumstance, certainly for me, where it was like, it was a joy to be there. Everybody was great. You wouldn't want to be anywhere else, and it was super successful. So you're just like, well, that's kind of the trifecta. That doesn't happen that often. But there are also those shows where you're like, I don't think the final product, or at least I was not great in the final product, but I learned a ton, and it was really sort of helpful. You know, I did a show, the Knick with Steve Soderbergh. You remember this?

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yes.

[Tom Lipinski]

And it was like, it was on Cinemax, so nobody watched it.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You played her husband, right?

[Tom Lipinski]

I played Juliet Rylance's.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Juliet Rylance's husband.

[Tom Lipinski]

It was a huge cast. It was a huge budget. They were shooting, like, in New York city for, like, 1900, and Clive Owen was the star of the show. And it was like this amazing show.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It's an amazing show. So good.

[Tom Lipinski]

And it was like, I'm forget. Like, I doubt not a lot of people watched it. I was forgettable in it. But the process of that whole show and watching Steven Soderbergh do his thing was just like, wow, this is an education.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Can you give us a nugget of that education?

[Patrick J. Adams]

Tell the story you told me all those years ago about how he would shoot such that like there'd be a window in the room and outside the window would be a street. So you would have to turn the whole street into age appropriate, appropriate, just in case the camera was going to go by the window.

[Vanessa Ray]

Can you imagine?

[Patrick J. Adams]

And then Steven Stoneberg would come in and be like, no, actually we're going to shoot this way. So the whole street had been turned into.

[Tom Lipinski]

That was the thing. You're absolutely right. We were in Harlem shooting in this house that had originally belonged to like the Barnum and one of the Barnum and Bailey like people. And it's, you know, period specific, all this sort of stuff. And outside when I showed up, There were like 10 horse trailers and they had like been dusting the snow, fake snow. They'd taken down all the street lights and the street signs and all this stuff. And it was for Steven Soderbergh to be on a oner on his shoulder to like push into two people having a conversation in front of a window that was like fogged and in the back you could see like a couple of horses and like, just like an old timey street. And like the other brain, the part of your brain that's like the line producer, you're just like 10 horse trailers, they have like four people per horse. Those horses need to eat. Those people have overtime. And you're just like, because. And it's not. He's the camera op. He's holding the camera, he's editing.

[Sarah Rafferty]

So he never slept.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Oh my God.

[Vanessa Ray]

So cool. That is so cool. That is so cool.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I know. Now I, I have a really clear memory of when you went to go do a little film called Labor Day and you had to get in shape. You were so rich.

[Sarah Rafferty]

I heard about this.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You came back, you had gone away and I didn't know what had happened. And you came and you said, I got this part and you had been working out like superhero working.

[Tom Lipinski]

Yes, it was great.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You were like waking up to eat protein at certain hours.

[Tom Lipinski]

Yes, yes.

[Patrick J. Adams]

You had like a whole regimen and you were whoa. Whoa. I mean, you've always been whoa.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Because you were a Josh Brolin. You were young Josh Brolin.

[Tom Lipinski]

I was baby Josh Brolin. But that was, that was a crazy, that was a crazy few days because. And those were some of my favorite, my personal favorite episodes of ours when we got to like go back in time. Our throwback episodes.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Oh, right. Yeah.

[Tom Lipinski]

Because that was like where we could sort of like unleash and be like young. You pretend we're Young. Young kids, young friends again.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah.

[Tom Lipinski]

But I came from Labor Day, flew up, did our scenes on that first Throwback episode, and then went and got married and then went back to Labor Day.

[Vanessa Ray]

That's right.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Wow.

That was a whole thing.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Congratulations. That was a fun little smart lady. It's a nail. It's a nail it down.

Yeah, yeah, right. Really, really smart. But, yeah, no, I was in. I did the, like, the whole. The thing that you always dream of, like the, oh, they're gonna pay somebody to train me and give. Give me muscles. Which was.

[Vanessa Ray]

Do you know that I tried to work with that guy?

[Tom Lipinski]

Did you?

The guy that trained me? Yeah. Because you gave. Yeah, you gave, Frank. You gave me. And guess what? I failed.

I think I stopped showing up three after the third. I was like, I guess I can't be a movie star.

I can't do it. I am not committed enough. He was so lovely and so intense.

It was so intense. What you described to me was. Was.

And I remember being like, my arms are very strong.

I do remember. I remember hating that scene.

I don't know. I don't accept it. And we're going to move on, but I. I'm gonna hold that grudge forever.

Yeah, we can take that offline anyway. But I remember hating that scene because I was like. There was a part of me that I was like, I don't want. It was like a breakup scene. And I was like, we have. You know what I mean? And I hated being, like, such an obvious prick to you. There was something that was really hard about that in that moment, because I also wanted somehow, like, selfishly, to keep our relationship going.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Do you know what I mean? No. It's a really good point and something that I wanted to talk about because you're in a situation when you're on a show and you're a guest star, where you're like, I want to be here. I really like this, and I want more. And then when your character starts doing things that you can feel is gonna put that at risk, you're suddenly at odds with like, well, I really want to do a good job. And do this scene as script. But I also want to leave enough breadcrumbs that you'll want to have me back a hundred percent.

[Sarah Rafferty]

And also, Patrick. I've been talking to Patrick each week about this television show. And just to reveal to you guys, since you're not totally caught up on sidebar, I think you grieve it too. Like, Patrick, you remember, you plug in. You see that you plug into. I miss my friends. I miss these two. He really talks about you guys all the time. To the point where I feel like, you know, pretty angry about.

[Patrick J. Adams]

We'll offline that as well.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yeah, we're going to offline. But he likes you better than the rest of us. No, but he. You missed them.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah, no, I had the scene I'm on. I was on the other side of that same. And it's funny, I don't think we ever actually talked about it, like, while it's happening, but it's like anytime something would move towards that, they would be painful scenes to shoot because it's like, I don't. I don't want. I didn't want to lose you guys. I especially. You know, I'm the only one who is having scenes with you too. Right. So no one else in the cast is having the experience of working with you guys. And how fun it is. Is. And I feel like it's so vital, but I could know that it's limited.

[Vanessa Ray]

And it's weird, too, when you come on and you. You're like, guest starring on the show. And you.

[Ted Danson]

You are our whole world.

[Vanessa Ray]

Right? Like, we. We like, bump into people in the hallways or whatever, but, like, you are our whole world. So to us, we're like, this is going great.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah.

[Vanessa Ray]

Like, things are really working.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah. Yeah.

[Vanessa Ray]

So for sure, we're. It's all happening for us too.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Right.

[Vanessa Ray]

I remember, like, after that first or second. I can't remember with first or second season, but I was out in LA for pilot season, and I remember being like, they're gonna make me and Tom regulars for sure. Like, that's gonna happen.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Exactly. Cause they should have.

[Vanessa Ray]

What else? What? I mean, in that version of a show, Mystery. Can you imagine? I remember. And I was like. And I got along with Megan. I was like, this is great. And then I remember talking to Aaron and he was like, it's not. We're going in a different direction. And I was like, oh, okay.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Okay.

[Vanessa Ray]

Oh, okay. So it was very confusing.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Was that in the second season, you.

[Vanessa Ray]

Were told second or third season.

[Tom Lipinski]

I remember that. I remember that phone Call.

[Vanessa Ray]

Do you remember that?

[Tom Lipinski]

I remember the phone call for you.

[Sarah Rafferty]

A phone call?

[Vanessa Ray]

Yeah, it was a phone call. They called us.

[Tom Lipinski]

It was pilot season. I was in LA for pilot season after the first season had wrapped and.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Listener. Listener. Hold on. Listener. Pilot season, just a reminder, was a time that doesn't really exist anymore, but it was a time of the year when actors would all start auditioning for the pilots that would then hopefully get picked up and come out. So, yeah, that would become suits. So it was a very big deal for actors to be available for pilot season.

[Vanessa Ray]

Right.

[Tom Lipinski]

But I was. So I was there. I had done my. My rent a wreck, which was like a West side place where you could buy it day. Just a beater of a car. And I've been going around for probably at that point, like a month and a half or two and just getting zero purchase on things. And I had walked out of an audition. I was on Sunset. I walked back to the beater. It had a parking ticket on it. I got in the car and Korsh called or he texted, was like, hey, are you available to talk? And I was just like, this is where it all changes.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Here we go. Here we go, baby.

[Tom Lipinski]

This is what I'm waiting for. And he was like, we have a lot of characters on the show. We think you guys are great, but we're probably basically like, you might come back for one, but that's gonna be the end of it. And I was just like, okay, thanks. Thank you, Aaron. I really appreciate everything you've done. And hang up the phone.

[Vanessa Ray]

Yes, yes.

[Tom Lipinski]

And kablooey. Just ballin.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And this was the second. Because we haven't gotten into the second season, but you guys still come and are involved at times. But this. So this was somewhere towards the end of the mid to end of second season.

[Vanessa Ray]

It must have been. I can't remember exactly when it was, but I do remember it being like after that first season of the show, like that pilot season, we got that call and it just was interesting. Cause it was like. Like I said, like, you're in this little world where you're like, oh, this is all. We're doing great things.

[Tom Lipinski]

This is the show. Yeah.

[Vanessa Ray]

Now you watch the show and you go. Or any show, really, and you kind of pull back and you go, okay, I see my. The cog of that character or whatever. Whatever.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It makes sense.

[Vanessa Ray]

Yeah.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Logically and logistically. But it's still. When you're the person inside of it, you're like, I must have done it wrong. Or I wasn't Did I do it good enough?

[Vanessa Ray]

For sure. It has nothing to do with that whatsoever. And you also, like, there. I think all of us had kind of been at that position in our careers where it was like, oh, this is what it's supposed to feel like.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Right.

[Vanessa Ray]

You know, so true. Like, all this was supposed to feel like. And then it doesn't go that direction, and it doesn't always. And I'm here to say it doesn't always feel like that.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It doesn't. You're right.

[Vanessa Ray]

It just doesn't.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Yeah. Even when it goes right.

[Vanessa Ray]

Even when it goes right.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Even when you get picked up and you're on the show, it doesn't always feel that good. And you don't get along with everybody that well.

[Vanessa Ray]

So just don't get, like, those special. Like. Like I said, like camp. You're like, oh. I mean, I keep talking about camp. I didn't go to camp. I don't remember. But that's a theory.

[Patrick J. Adams]

We never went to camp. But I have a idea of what camp was like.

[Vanessa Ray]

People talk about it and it's.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yeah, but we're all kind of in camp in our career.

[Vanessa Ray]

Yeah.

[Sarah Rafferty]

Like, there's. There's an intimacy. There's a camp intimacy. I think it's fun. I just want to point this out because we saw each other. Vanessa and I saw each other in the hall and came running towards each other across a great distance and leapt into each other's arms. And we had never really met briefly crossings.

[Vanessa Ray]

We'd been in a makeup trailer together.

[Sarah Rafferty]

I think that time that I told you to get some SPF and what happened. But, like, there is an intimacy. And we even just talked about it outside of the studio, talking about kind of the community of actors, you know, and how we take care of each other, even if we haven't worked together, you know. Let me put you in touch with so and so about this personal thing you're going through. And I think that is a magical thing about our business, is that we. We are all these nomadic people, but we're there for each other because we have this shared experience, whether we've been on screen with each other or not, and not even just on suits, but across the business.

[Vanessa Ray]

I think it's a beautiful thing.

[Patrick J. Adams]

It's an intense thing making a show when you find people that you really love and connect and you're like, oh. Because sometimes you go to work with people who are hard, and it's like, oh, this is making my day difficult. And you're really happy to get Home at the end of the day and take a break and then you have to put your armor back on to go back to work. When you find people that it is not that with where it's like, oh, my God, I get to go to work and just be silly with these people and get paid to be silly or to be in love or to be, you know, funny or to have a fake fight with my friend and be sad about it. You know, it's. It's just such a gift and it is so, so rare. So thank you, guys. Where do you think Jenny and Trevor are now? Where are they? In the world.

[Sarah Rafferty]

In my heart.

[Patrick J. Adams]

And go, well, it's funny because of course my line of work has become legalized both in Canada and all across the country. The United States. And it was just like, is it fun for, for him to be like, all of a sudden to be like a pot farmer? To be like in the legalized version? Because now every time I go to New York, it's just like the streets stink of.

Yeah, they're just on every corner now.

[Vanessa Ray]

It's everywhere.

[Tom Lipinski]

Every bodega.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I think that means you're just rolling in it though. I think if, if, if the amount of money you were making as a black market, briefcase dealing pot dealer, I feel like you're now running some corporation. Like you're a billionaire.

[Tom Lipinski]

I know. Although, like towards the end I had sort of like really straightened up and I was essentially like a teetotaler and was really hardlined into like, Michael, you need to turn your life around. That whole thing.

[Patrick J. Adams]

Oh, right. And do you remember where you went when we get into our. You went to Montana. Remember that part where you're like, I guess I'll go to Montana.

[Tom Lipinski]

And frankly, I don't know why the phone call from Aaron being like, we're gonna kind of write you out, why that didn't hit me sooner when they were like, we're sending you to Montana. And I was like, huh? I'm sure I'll come back.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I'm sure it's going to work out, Montana. Listen, guys, I want to be mindful of the time that we have you for, but there is this one more scene that I want to watch, Mike and Jenny, because it is so sweet.

Obviously, we have a lot of Suits fans watching this who I think are going to be so happy to hear from you guys. And you gu. Been so gracious with your experience of what it was like. But is there anything that you want to make sure you say in closing about what it was like and anything else?

[Sarah Rafferty]

Yeah, and we'll cut all that's. But I don't. We don't need to state it anymore.

Well, you know, I'll say this.

Yeah, everybody shut up while I'm talking. No, I will say this. Beyond being. Beyond being, like, more than grateful to all of you guys and to, like, my experience on set and all that sort of stuff, I find that, you know, like, people have asked, like, oh, is it annoying that, like. Because people have started to come up to me, as I'm sure they have come up. I mean, obviously they have come up to you forever, but they come up to me who play. You know, I was only in, what, 11 episodes, I think, and people have been coming up to me constantly. I went. I wanted. I was in. My wife was dancing in Germany, and I was in Germany and people in 2015. So before the Netflix of it all, before all this, and they came up to me and they were like, you're Trevor from Suits. And I was like, oh, my. My God. And I find that to be so special and such a. Like, a wonderful thing that fans are able and, like, consistently tune in and, like, get involved. I think that's like kind of this fantastic thing. And when people come up and are like, oh, my God, you're in that show, and I love that show that. That continues to, like, have this other life and live for other people, and you can be, like, a small part of that. You know, I never dreamt that I would be part of something that's this big or has been. This has such a long life. And I just, I guess, thank you guys for giving me that opportunity.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I would say you're not such a small part. I know 11 episodes feels like small, but they were really pivotal episodes in setting up the, you know, the drama and these characters. So it's not. I don't think it is such a small part. I just want to correct you especially what's my favorite thing to do.

[Sarah Rafferty]

You guys were the springboard right into these worlds.

[Patrick J. Adams]

I just think it's a really cool thing when people, like you said bring this up to you and that it's had this second life that is so amazing because we all knew it was good. And then now that it's, you know, it's got this second life to it or whatever, it's great when anybody brings it up to me. And I only have good memories. Like, I only have happiness. Like, I'm only delighted to get to talk about it or to say thank you or whatever.

[Patrick J. Adams]

That's a. That is very rare to have done what you guys did to make a show where even when we come in and out, we would feel like so loved and welcomed.

Yeah, my brother, who is an investigative reporter, and I, we started a podcast during the pandemic called Gone South. It is a true crime Deep south podcast. First three seasons were each. Each season was an individual crime that we report on. We interview the people involved, sometimes the people who perpetrated the crime and the original law enforcement, et cetera. And now we are in season four, where we have a different story every week. Whoa. 39 true crime stories for season four lined up for the people.

That's a lot of work.

Do you have any podcasting tips for us as we are just sort of beginning our journey?

You know, it's a long. It's a lot. It's a lot of stu. There's a lot of podcasts.

You look man, it's a long road, so just try to do your best. There's a. I.
