In September he’ll graduate with a masters degree and all going well, will find a job that will allow him to stay. Abhishek is a delight to talk to, he’s bubbly, chatty and very articulate. Obviously he misses home, his Mom, her food and the epic 10 day festivals they have full of dancing and music. She took us on a fiercely emotional journey about her experience with ayahuasca in Brazil. It led her to completely change her life and become the incredible woman she is today. Both our guests at ATN, Faye and Aoife, are stunning women. They’re courageous, raw, emotional, powerfully honest and conscientious activists. I was so honoured that they joined me. I was also so touched to see the tent completely packed, especially at 1pm on a Sunday. Thank you, so much. We packed out the tent, and I couldn't have asked for better guests, Faye O'Rourke (Soda Blonde) and Aoife Dunne (whose episode we'll share tomorrow).Faye is so creative and channels all of her emotions into both her songwriting and her visual arts. We chat about her process, what drives her, and about getting dark with her art. An incredibly brave and fearless woman (even if she doesn't think so herself!) I can't thank Faye and Aoife enough for taking time out of the Sunday festival to join us on Sin Scéal Eile, and also to all the lovely listeners who piled in the tent. He’s now challenged himself to walk 4,500km across America to raise awareness and one million euro for Spinal Injuries Ireland. It’s no mean feat, even for the most able bodied person, but Fergus is determined and knows what he needs to do to succeed.We wish him all the best with this epic challenge. Admittedly, I know nothing about Irish football, but I know that Nicky is a complete gent. He’s kind, funny and super welcoming. He’s generous with his storytelling today, even though he says he doesn’t do a lot of chatting these days due to complications from his cancer treatment affecting his speech. Nicky was a goalkeeper for teams like Bray Wanderers, Sligo Rovers and Cliftonville across the 80s and 90s and has so many stories from that time but what really catches my attention today though is the incredible youthwork he did alongside football. However, as he was giving us a short tour of the amazing island, it dawned on me that he has one of the most unique jobs in Ireland and we’d be silly not to interview him. With a bit of arm twisting, Cillian told us how exactly he ended up as general manager of Lough Derg and what exactly that entails. There’s 800 beds, man over board drills and so much more. 1w ago00:26:50Tap to summarizeMy call out for participants for this project reached Lough Derg, an inland island in Donegal, which many people know as ‘St Patrick's Purgatory’. It’s an ancient pilgrimage site that dates back to the 5th century. Each summer, thousands of people descend on the island and take part in a 3 day pilgrimage. They walk and pray barefoot, they fast and they stay awake for the duration of the first night and following day. I went to the island, not as a pilgrim, but to meet a very interesting man. Father La Flynn is the prior of Lough Derg and this year he is celebrating 50 years since his ordination. We chat about how a priest's role in the community has changed during his time, as well as all the things he's learned. She’s the kind of person who needs to know how things work, and she’ll teach herself everything she can to find out. That’s how she found herself in the role of Tech Manager, Projectionist and pretty much an all round cinema buff in both the Irish and Canadian film industries. Her take on what makes a good screening is beautifully analog and considered and she utterly cherishes the dying art of a good cinema experience. His story starts at the age of 14 when he found himself in Bermingham. He worked any job he could find, including on building sites and factories.
