Kasey Boone
Welcome to Skin in the City. I am your host, Kasey Boone. If it's your first time, welcome. If you're returning, also welcome. I wasn't sure if I was going to post an episode this week with the holidays literally just around the corner, but I thought I'd pop on and say hello. I've had a bunch of guests on. If you haven't caught up and listened to those episodes, definitely go check them out. I've had some really fun conversations the past few months and I hope that you have time to listen to them because I don't know about you, but like I have. I learned so much from like just other people. Like, I love talking to other people. I love talking to other estheticians who who are successful in the industry, not only like in the treatment room, but like with their side ventures too. Which is kind of something that I wanted to talk about because I was talking about it on TikTok, I mentioned it on Instagram. I was also just interviewed on Beauty with the Twist podcast. You should definitely check that out. That's a really good conversation that I have with Deedee. She's amazing. She's amazing podcaster. She you can find her on anywhere podcasts are found, as well as YouTube, like if you're down to watch it. And she doesn't just talk, she's an esthetician. But she interviews like nail artists, like lash artists, waxers, like just kind of everybody in the beauty industry. So it gives you even like a bigger perspective. So I highly recommend checking out the episode I did with her because we had a really fun conversation. But also check out her other episodes. She's amazing. If you're looking for other like beauty industry podcasts that feel good and like helpful and informative because I know not all of them feel like that, but it was really cool. We had this conversation and I was thinking, and I was actually talking with my mom too. I gave her a facial the other day and I was like, wow. Like, I. I'm so grateful. Like, I work. I don't work full time, but I make full time money. And this was something that was always a goal of mine, but I didn't know how I was going to get there. Like, to give you a little bit of background if you don't know, like, my whole story. I was a dancer in high school. I thought I wanted to go professional, but I decided that I was going to do a makeup course instead because the dancing felt intimidating. Which we'll get to maybe eventually by the end of this podcast because I want to share more what's going on with me personally. But I graduated high school early, just a semester early. And I went and got, like, took like a makeup course and I got like certified in doing makeup. And I, you know, I couldn't wrap my brain around the fact that, like, I didn't need a license to do makeup. So I started like, searching licenses. That's when esthetician license came up and I got my esthetician license and I was licensed by the time I was like 18, 19 somewhere in there. And I was going to school and I was waitressing. And once I got out of school, I was still waitressing. And then I got a second job as a receptionist in a day spa. So I worked two jobs for a really long time and I was really broke for a really long time. But, like, that's okay. Like, I was 19. I think you're kind of like, supposed to maybe be kind of broke or like figuring out at 19, like, I didn't go to college. Like, all my friends went to college and were like, partying and like, I was like working two jobs, like, barely surviving paying rent. But anyhow, I got even though, like, years later, like, I opened my business, like, I went solo and then I opened a business which was so amazing and so cool. I still felt like looking back now, like, I was stuck in this, like, old construct of, like, you have to work five days and you have to work eight hours a day. Like the 40 hour work week. Like, I was just stuck in this, like, old mindset that we're all taught, right? We go to school five days a week. Week. We're supposed to work five days a week. And I personally got stuck in it. I know a lot of us do, but I feel like I was able to break free these past few years and really, like, open up my mind. Open up my. Just, like, open up my mind to, like, new different ways of living and opportunity. Like, the fact that, like, it's Thursday and I'm sitting here, or, like 1:30 in the afternoon in my home office recording in my sweatpants. And then, like, I'm gonna be done for the day. I'm gonna close my laptop and I'm gonna go, like, live my life. Because now, like, my life is the number one priority, not, like, trying to survive and scrape, like, for work. And again, like, it didn't happen overnight. And I worked really hard to get to this place. And there was many, many years of working, five, six, working 40, 50, 60, 70 hours a week to get to this point. And I really do believe, like, you know, you have to pay your dues and, like, you need to put in work. Especially, like, if you're newer in the industry, like, you just kind of have to put your head down and get to work and figure it out. That's the only way, like, you learn. What do they say, it's like 10,000 hours before you become an expert? I think I'm closer to probably, like a hundred thousand hours. But with all of that being said, I hope sharing this with you that, like, you don't have to work, like, the two jobs as long or, like, feel like you're forcing yourself into this construct of, like, the 40 hour work week as long as I did, and that you can, like, break out of this, like, matrix. Okay. And if you're following me still, like, I'm obsessed that you're still following me, but, like, if you can break out of the 40 hour work week. Matrix. Make matrix. I can't even say it. Then I feel like we're moving in the right direction as people, as humans, as estheticians. And I feel like, of course we're getting into the industry because. Or I hope we're getting into the industry because we want to help people. If you're not getting into this industry to help people, what are you? Like, ask yourself that, because again, like, we had this really great conversation on beauty with a twist that I feel like a lot of people now are getting into this industry for the wrong reason, and then they are comparing themselves to other people on the Internet and then they're feeling really disappointed. So make sure, like, you really have your. Why, like, why are you getting into this? Like, for me, since I was as long as I can remember, like, I have been drawn to beauty and dressing up and makeup and doing my grandma's hair and putting on makeup when I was, like, way too young. Do you know what I mean? Like, I was just drawn to that. I love people. I love helping people. But with that being said, I did start to feel stuck. Like, I started to feel stuck and trapped in the treatment room because I forced myself into this, like, five days a week, eight hours a day bullshit, even though I was working for myself. So I had to, like, rewire my brain, and then I had to rewire my entire body business. And now, literally, I don't have to work more than a few hours a week to maintain my business. Now, that doesn't mean that there aren't, like, days or weeks that, like, I'm working really, really hard. But then there's also days and weeks where, like, I'm really, like, taking a step back and kind of, like, just doing the bare minimum. For example, like, we typically do at least two trade shows a year. We go to the Las Vegas Trade show, and we go to the Long Beach Trade Show. And that's where I'm selling all of our products, like our towels, our cold rollers, our tiger's eye, Gua Sha, like, all of the tools that I make. And there's a lot of prep that goes into that. And then there's, like, about a week worth of work from, like, packing, driving, travel, and I'm, like, managing a whole team behind the scenes as well, right? So I'm working, working way more than 40 hours probably that week. But then the following week, like, I'm really laying back and only working a few hours. Now you're like, casey, maybe, like, you're not going to trade shows. Maybe you're just in the treatment room. Like, you're like, how do I. How do I do this? And the thing is, like, there isn't just, like, one answer. It's going to depend on your lifestyle. It's going to depend on, like, what you want, what you're driven to do. But I hope this conversation or this podcast is at least giving you inspiration to write down your why. And then from there, write down, like, your dream. And, like, I. I really, really, really, really, really, really encourage you to, like, physically write this down. Like, pen to paper. Like, I have become a pen to paper girl, and it has changed my life. So pen to paper, write down, like, your ideal, like, week. Like, I am sleeping in. I'm going to Pilates. Like, I can cook a meal for my family twice a week. Like, I'm taking the dog on a walk in the middle of the day. Do you know what I mean? Like, whatever it is, like, big or small, like, you're taking yourself on a vacation once a year, or, like, you only have to work two full days a week or whatever it is. Like, right it down. And then from there, start figuring out ways that you can make this your actual reality. For me, like, like I said, the pen to paper has been incredible. It has changed my life. It is shifting my mindset so much so that, like, I don't even know what's around the next corner, which feels fucking terrifying and really, really, really exciting. Like, I share on Beauty with the Twist podcast like, that I am being called to do other things. I've shared it on here with you guys that, like, the music is calling me. I'm writing music, I'm writing lyrics, I'm singing. I'm playing a lot more music. Like, that doesn't mean I'm leaving the beauty industry, but I am now allocating some of my time and ideally more of my time to this, like, new music venture, because I'm really being called to do it. And going back to, like, when I was a dancer back in the day. I was so afraid when I was 18 to, like, fully step into that and express myself. And for a really long time, I told myself that, like, it's too late or I'm too old, or I haven't practiced in a really long time or. Right. You give yourself all these excuses, like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But then I've talked to, like, all of these people. I see all these people's stories, like, people restarting over at 40. Read people starting over at 50. Like, it's never too late to change your life and do the things that you really want to do. And that starts with prioritizing. Whatever you want to be a priority. So, like, if it's your family, lean into that. If it is building a clientele, lean into that. If it's, like, stepping out of the treatment room and, like, selling more product, lean into that. Like, there's so many ways to make money. And if we can let go of some of the fear and this, like, old way of thinking and old way of working, I believe that this will all give us more freedom, which we're all feeling like we want. Okay, so with that being said, I was asking you guys if you had any questions, like, on or around this subject. So let me pull them up and I will answer a few questions for you. Okay? First question is, how do you find your niche and stick with it? Okay, here's My take on this, this is a hot take. You don't have to find a niche. I feel like people are so obsessed with, like, preaching that on the Internet and it's like, gone too far. I think, don't worry about finding the niche. I think do the things that you like to do. You don't have to have a niche. But what might happen when you start trying these things out is, like, you might wind up niching down. For example, when I was working full time in the treatment room, I was doing facials, I was doing peels, I tried eyelash extensions, I tried waxing, I was doing spray tans. But as I started doing these services, like, on a regular basis, I realized that I hate waxing. Like, I don't like it. It's not my vibe. And it took me a long time to, like, fully drop it. Like, of course there's, like, always those clients that, like, we're getting a facial and they're like, can you do my brows, too? And for so long it was so hard, like, turn down the money. But I eventually was like, guys, I'm not the best at it. And like, no, I don't want to do it anymore. Like, I'm not doing it. I'll refer you to, like, one of my other estheticians who knows how to wax so hot take. You do not have to find a niche and you do not have to stick with it. And honestly, that was the best thing I ever did. Like, the. I haven't stuck. I mean, I've done facials all these years, 18 years. But they've evolved and they've changed, like, year after year. And I'm actually grateful that I didn't stick to a niche because I wouldn't be sitting in this chair recording a podcast if I did. Because I. I'm not niche. I kind of do everything. I work in the treatment room, I sell retail, I make tools, I report, record podcasts, I create content. Like, I am a multi. I'm a multi purpose esthetician. And I think you can be too. But if you do want to niche down, that's great. But, like, for me, I get bored. So I like to have a lot of different opportunity. But remember, like, you do not have to niche down to be successful, but also be aware, like, that you're adding too many things and then, like, you're feeling, like, scattered. And you're not like, honing in on your craft either. So pick a few things that you feel drawn to, do them for a while and see how you feel. And Then adjust from there. Okay, another question. Tips on how to attract and gain more returning clients. This is a question I get a lot and I just feel like it's too vague for me to answer. Every answer for every single person is going to be different. But I say like, put yourself out there and really, number one, focus on the clients you have. If you are not giving them 110%, start doing it now. Like focus on them. Because my best, best, best, best, best clients were always referral, always referral. Because I took care of like that one client and then she referred me, her brother, her husband, her daughter, her mom, her best friends. Like, so you know, it's gonna depend on the person's like, do you have any clients? That's a question. And number two, like focus on them and like write them the thank you cards. Like give them everything that you have. Sell them more retail, put yourself out on social media or you know, pass out business cards. Like in your local area. There's ways to find clients, but you just are going to have to put some like real time and energy into it. It takes a long freaking time. You guys like it took me.

Probably like seven or eight years like into my career to like have a super, super, super, super solid clientele like this. Like overnight success is not a real thing. Okay, okay, let's read another question. Being in the beauty industry during the holiday, as an esthetician in my area, she says in the ie, which I think is. She's talking about here in California, Is the time I'm the slowest. And it's so hard to support my family during this time. What do you suggest I do to help my business during these times? That's really interesting because typically that's, like, my busiest time is, like, right before the holidays. Like, everyone wants a facial and lashes and spray tan, like, for all their, like, holiday parties. But if it's slow right now, then this is the time to hunker down, Hone in on your skills. Make some more social media content. Reach out to the clients that you haven't seen in more than 3, 4 weeks. Offer them a special, like, get people in the door. Like it. You can't sit at home and be upset and bumped out. You have to start putting yourself out there. So reach out to people. Sometimes people just forget and they're busy, you know? So let's see. Okay, one more question. Someone saying I deserve a raise and want to speak to my boss about it because I do so much for the spa, but I struggle speaking up for myself. But I know there is more out there for me. Okay, well, this sounds like, you know what you need to do that. If you're feeling like you're being overworked and underpaid, have a conversation with your boss and then also go look for other jobs or go look for a second job or look and see what other opportunities there. But, you know, make sure you're really looking at yourself and, like, what you're offering and look at how much, like, your boss is, you know, offering you. But just have an open dialogue. It's pretty simple. And you're gonna know right away. They're either going to hopefully communicate with you and offer you a little bit more money or communicate to you why you were not getting a raise. And regardless of the situation, you can go look and see what other opportunities are out there. All right, I hope that helps. Okay, you guys, so I think this is it for the year. I need to go into, like, a little bit of a hibernation before I get ready for 2025. I feel like winter is telling me to, like, rest. Winter is telling me to take care of myself. So that's what I'm gonna do. Episode Title: Making Full-Time Money Without Working Full-Time
Release Date: November 21, 2024
Host: Kasey Boone
Podcast: Skin and the City Podcast by Kasey Boone Skincare™
In the episode titled "Making Full-Time Money Without Working Full-Time," host Kasey Boone delves into her personal journey and shares valuable insights on achieving financial success while maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Skipping the usual holiday intros, Kasey gets straight to the heart of empowering estheticians to break free from conventional work structures.
Kasey begins by recounting her early aspirations and the path that led her to become a successful esthetician. Transitioning from a high school dancer to a certified makeup artist, Kasey shares the challenges she faced, including juggling multiple jobs and financial struggles in her late teens and early twenties.
“I was working two jobs for a really long time and I was really broke for a really long time. But, like, that's okay. Like, I was 19...” [03:15]
Despite the hardships, Kasey's dedication paid off as she eventually opened her own business. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the importance of persistence and hard work.
A significant portion of the episode focuses on Kasey's experience breaking away from the traditional 40-hour workweek. She discusses the mental shift required to prioritize personal life over continuous work.
“I was stuck in this, like, old mindset that we're all taught, right? We go to school five days a week... And I personally got stuck in it.” [07:20]
Kasey highlights the liberation that comes from restructuring her business, allowing her to work fewer hours while maintaining a full income.
Kasey stresses the necessity of understanding one's motivations and setting clear goals. She advocates for the "pen to paper" method to outline dreams and aspirations, facilitating a roadmap to success.
“I really, really, really, really encourage you to, like, physically write this down. Like, pen to paper.” [12:45]
By documenting her ideal week and personal goals, Kasey was able to rewire her business and lifestyle to align with her true priorities.
Kasey shares her approach to managing fluctuating workloads, especially during trade shows and busy seasons. She emphasizes the importance of flexibility and delegation to maintain balance.
“Now, literally, I don't have to work more than a few hours a week to maintain my business.” [14:10]
This section underscores the value of strategic planning and the ability to scale efforts based on business demands.
Kasey addresses several listener questions, providing tailored advice for various challenges faced by estheticians.
Contrary to popular belief, Kasey argues that estheticians don't necessarily need to niche down. She encourages embracing diverse services and evolving with one's interests.
“You do not have to find a niche and you do not have to stick with it. And honestly, that was the best thing I ever did.” [16:05]
By exploring different areas, Kasey found her unique path, ultimately leading to greater satisfaction and success.
Focusing on existing clients and delivering exceptional service is Kasey's key strategy for client retention and referrals.
“Focus on the clients you have. If you are not giving them 110%, start doing it now.” [16:30]
She highlights the power of word-of-mouth and the importance of nurturing strong client relationships.
For estheticians experiencing slow periods, Kasey suggests honing skills, enhancing social media presence, and reaching out to lapsed clients with special offers.
“This is the time to hunker down, hone in on your skills. Make some more social media content. Reach out to the clients that you haven't seen in more than 3, 4 weeks.” [18:10]
These proactive measures can help stabilize income and prepare for busier times.
Kasey advises open communication with employers regarding raises and encourages exploring other job opportunities if necessary.
“Have a conversation with your boss and then also go look for other jobs or go look for a second job or look and see what other opportunities are out there.” [19:00]
This approach ensures that estheticians advocate for their worth and seek environments that recognize their contributions.
As the episode wraps up, Kasey reflects on the year ahead, emphasizing the importance of rest and self-care during the winter season. She also announces upcoming sales and encourages listeners to engage with her on social media for further support and resources.
“I hope you have a great holiday season, that I hope you spend time with friends or family or maybe alone or travel or just do whatever it is you want to do.” [21:00]
Kasey's heartfelt conclusion reinforces her commitment to supporting the esthetician community and fostering a space for growth and success.
