Tonight, addressing burnout. I find the word burnout very telling and interesting. I think it's a good descriptor. Like, we've been pushing so hard with so much heat, so much willful force that we burn through ourselves. Or like the electrical connections in our nervous system feel, like, fried. I know that's not exactly what happens. It's more like our adrenal glands are overtaxed and we become depleted. But the word itself tells a whole story. And speaking of the adrenals, every time we experience stress, our adrenal glands secrete just a little bit of stress hormone. And there are several different stress hormones. And that's not a bad thing. Stress hormones increase our alertness. They help us take action and generally push us forward when we need to be pushed. But when we deal with chronic stressful situations or find ourselves in super intense environments, or we have jobs that continually stress us out and we don't have a way to dial it down, we experience too many of these chemicals in our bodies and they start to wear us down and potentially do damage. When we're no longer able to find balance, the stress response takes over and gains momentum, and, well, we burn out. As we say, it can present itself in many ways, different ways for different people, but fatigue, mood changes, sleep issues, even cognitive problems. But no matter how you experience it, you know, things have gotten out of balance, but we have more power over the situation than we think we do. I always like to remind us here at Sleep Magic that the subconscious mind is a learning machine. It learns all sorts of things, good and bad. You learn how to drive and walk and pick your nose. So perhaps you are faced with stressful situations, but you've learned some unhelpful attitudes about the situation. Like, do you have belief systems around being a hero, that you're the only one who can handle things? Do you bring this stress home with you? Or do you bring the home stress to your work? Are you allergic to taking time off? Like, you have some opinion or belief about giving yourself relief? It can be hard when we have our pedal to the metal for such a long time, and it becomes compulsive to shift gears. Are you afraid to shift gears? Like, if you let go of this stance, will the world fall apart? These are just attitudes and belief systems that can undergird the stress, like nourish the stress and continually move you in that direction. So are your feelings of stress and your beliefs about stress just compounding one another, or do you have ways of dialing down the intensity when you come home or when the stakes are not so high? If we don't intervene upon our own minds under these circumstances, it's really easy and normal to just learn the stress and then get stressed about the stress, which gets you, you know, more stress, like a fist that doesn't want to open. So tonight we're going to drop whatever stress you're carrying right now and help you realign with the natural forces moving through you so you can experience more balance. And if you're going through something particularly difficult right now, I wish you all the best and I encourage you to use this episode regularly to give yourself some. Some breaks within your situation. None of us run the world, and for those of you who have lots of responsibilities, it's vital that you take care of yourself in order to continue to help others. I know that sounds like a cliche, but it's just physics. Is it physics, some kind of science where you have to be full and it's the cup running over? You know, you gotta have a full cup at least some of the time. So tonight we slow down, we cool down, and we return to the natural balance inside. So get yourself into a safe and comfortable position. And let's begin. Allow your eyes to close easily and gently.
B
Even that feels nice to close out the world. The world is okay. The world is doing itself. And no matter what we or feel about it, it's gonna keep just doing itself. And we're allowed to shut it out for several hours every night. And even when we wait, want to during the day, because other people are taking care of things too. Nature is moving through other people too. So now that your eyes are closed, bring your awareness to your breath.
A
And.
B
Come back home to you. This is part of the balance in your life, your inside world and the outside world. And you're allowed to go back and forth, your consciousness moving into the world and back home to yourself. And that's not some special thing. That's how you're designed. And that's a balancing point for every single person on the planet. So coming back Home to your breath. The breath is like this little bridge between the inside and the outside. Allow your awareness to just settle for a second as you dare to come back home. Welcome. As you bring your awareness now into your eyelids, you imagine your eyelids are.
A
Feeling very, very heavy.
B
And you allow this heaviness to increase in your eyelids. The sleepiness, relaxation.
A
And now I'd like you to imagine.
B
That the heaviness in your eyelids is so completely that you cannot open your eyes. And of course you can open your eyes if you want to, but we're pretending that you can't.
A
So as you pretend that your eyelids are so heavy that you cannot open.
B
Them, I'd like you to test your eyes to make sure you cannot open them by wiggling your eyebrows. Just give them a tug. Good. So this relaxation around your eyes, this heaviness, hmm. Let's imagine it moving back into your head. Let's imagine it moving back into your brain. Yes. This wonderful heaviness taking over your brain. And your brain has been so active today, so active in the world, handling so many things. But it's okay to allow your brain to simply drop all the connections and threads and pulses that it puts out and that it takes in. It's okay because your brain doesn't stop as you sleep. It simply slows down and goes inward and moves into a different mode. And one of the great things about the mode that the brain moves into is that it's a deep, wise and creative problem solving mode where connections get made and insights occur. So it's good to let your brain shift into this relaxation. The heaviness taking over your head, your head sinking into the pillow. Your brain sort of dialing down as the muscles of your face become soft and peaceful. Good. As all mental tension disappears. Beautiful. As you allow that relaxation to move down now into your neck. The neck secretly and silently carries so much. But now that you're horizontal and now that your head is feeling. Feeling heavy on the pillow, your neck is getting a vacation. So imagine the muscles of your neck are soft, flexible and relaxed. Any tension you may have been carrying in your neck during the day, whether it was conscious or unconscious.
A
Is letting go.
B
As the relaxation moves down into your shoulders, your shoulders begin to melt, melt like butter into the breath bit. And if you're somebody who feels a lot of tension or stress or responsibilities, imagine all the responsibilities that you feel you are carrying on your shoulders during the day. Responsibilities you feel to your family, family, to your friends, to your work.
A
Even.
B
Responsibilities you feel to strangers on the Internet. Responsibilities you feel to the world, to your society at large, responsibilities you feel to the future. That's a lot of stuff to carry on your shoulders. But carrying those things on your shoulders is not what solves those problems. You're a good person, and your feelings.
A
Of responsibility are good.
B
But that doesn't mean you need to feel heavy or burdened. The problem solving comes from an entirely different place in you than some heavy feeling on your shoulders or on your spirit. Your subconscious mind is always working to solve problems for you. And the more relaxed you are, the easier it is for your subconscious mind to solve problems. And I know that's counterintuitive, but it's true. So imagine all those responsibilities you've been carrying on your shoulders. Imagine them falling to the floor as you let go. And it feels really good to let go. And you can look at them tomorrow morning.
A
You can decide and figure out, which.
B
Of these things can I actually affect? Which of these things do I want.
A
To give my energy to?
B
And then you relax and trust that your subconscious mind is problem solving. And you listen to yourself deep inside for your next right move. And you can leave those burdens on the floor tomorrow morning if you want to. As your shoulders relax and you go deeper and deeper, and your arms are becoming nice and heavy like they're made of marble. And the heaviness is moving all the way down into your hands and your fingers. Good. And now imagine that relaxation moving deep inside your chest, opening up your torso, your rib cage, expanding, relaxing. That wonderful, relaxing energy is surrounding and supporting your heart. Imagine it holding your heart. Now, when it comes to stress, our hearts are very much involved. And we don't even necessarily know in the moment the degree to which our hearts are experiencing the situations around us. But our hearts are always here, listening and giving and knowing, because there are nerve cells in the heart respond.
A
So I'd like you to imagine any.
B
Stress that your heart has picked up recently. Just imagine that energy. And now it's disappearing, releasing, dissolving. And you allow your heart to simply, simply be right here, right now. Good. As a relaxation moves down deeper into your torso, deep into your belly. Allow your breath to drop deep into your belly as you imagine that relaxation surrounding and supporting your lower belly. This part of your body picks up stress as well. We hold things in our gut. So imagine any stress you may have been holding or gathering in your gut recently. Just imagine that energy. And now notice that it's disappearing, dissolving, and now it's gone. And you get to simply be in Your body relaxed and comfortable. As your pelvis feels nice and heavy on the bed. That wonderful relaxation that you've moved throughout your entire upper body is now moving down into your legs. All the way down through your knees, through your ankles, into your feet and into your toes. Wonderful warm heaviness. And as you bring your awareness now to any sounds that are going on around you, sounds from within your environment or out on the street, just allow them to take you deeper and deeper. Just allow them to move through you as you go deeper and deeper. And the sound of my voice is also taking you deeper and deeper. And even when my voice feels far away or detached, your subconscious mind will continue to get the message of this episode. So you can just let go and relax and receive. It's okay to receive. Imagine you're standing at the edge of a very special place. You're barefoot and wrapped in a towel. And you step into a cool room. The marble floor is smooth beneath your feet. The air is clean, calm and refreshing, like a morning breeze through an alpine forest. Light shimmers softly on the wall, a silver glow, still and pure. This cool space wraps around your whole body, your whole being, like a cool cloak of calm. You sit down and lean against a.
A
Cool wall made of marble.
B
And with each breath, your system respond. As you breathe in, you notice the chill in the air. And as you breathe out, you feel a soft calm descending. There's nowhere to go, Nothing to do. You are slowing down, cooling down, resting. Your adrenal glands are settling into a steadier rhythm. Your heart is relaxing. Your thoughts are slowing down and softening, their edges blurring. The coolness is soothing. The parts of you that have been overused, overheated, allowing your body to rest, allowing your mind to be still, allowing your inner being to find its strength again. Everything within you is beginning to align. To cool, to come home. You are at peace in this wintry stillness, like the quiet before a new season. Like the fresh snow on the earth. All is still. All is healing. I am allowed to be still. I am allowed to take care of myself. I am allowed to heal. This winter brings you inward and invites you to self reflect. As you come home to your inner being. Winter gives you the time to slow.
A
Down.
B
And really feel into yourself, to hear your intuition, to tap your inner wisdom. And even though winter appears still on the surface, deep inside, on the deepest levels of your being, your body is being nourished. You are healing. I am still. I am taking care of myself. I am healing. And you can come back to this cool room with whenever you want. Because just as there is winter in the world, there is winter in you. And now you notice a tiny shift occurring. The coolness is giving way to a very gentle warmth. As the marble floor beneath your feet is becoming wood. The air is feeling tender like the first day of spring. You hear birdsong in the distance. And the light dancing across the walls is gold. Space is feeling more alive. Open energy is moving again, gently and wisely. And your body is responding with that same wisdom. A quiet rise, a return of energy. I am allowed to be open. I'm allowed to be gentle. I'm allowed to take my time. Your chest is expanding. Your belly feels full and soft. Your thoughts are gentle now.
A
Open.
B
Curious. This springtime is inside of you as nature renews you. Just as there is springtime in the year, there is springtime in you. Springtime in your spirit. I am gentle. I am open. I take my time. You can revisit this springtime inside of you anytime you want. It feels nice to feel a spring. And now the warmth is deepening and a blossoming is occurring. And the room is glowing with golden summer light. Touching everything with within it. And you are receiving this warmth in every breath. It's moving through your skin, into your bones, into. Into your cells. And the energy, the energy deep within.
A
You.
B
Is blossoming fully. Your inner garden fills with green growth and big wide petals. You thrive in this warmth, in this light, in this energy. I am allowed to bloom. I am allowed to grow. I am allowed to love. You feel full now. Full of life, full of ease, full of power. You are nourished. You are full. You are whole. Your heart is calm and open. Your mind is spacious and wide. And this energy moving through, through you now is the same energy in the.
A
Rivers.
B
In the trees, in the oceans and in the stars. The universe is moving. Moving through you and moving through everyone. All is flowing. All is flourishing. And the more relaxed you become, the more more you flourish. I am blooming. I am growing. I am loving as you float in this feeling. And when you're ready, you come back to bed again. But there's more of you now. Something special has returned inside of you as you drift and float. Henry Sa It It. It.
Podcast Episode Summary: "Addressing Burnout | Stress Relief Hypnosis For Great Sleep"
Podcast Information:
Introduction to Burnout
In this episode of Sleep Magic, host Jessica Porter delves deep into the pervasive issue of burnout, offering both insightful explanations and practical hypnotherapy techniques to help listeners manage and overcome stress-related exhaustion.
Understanding Burnout
[03:25] Jessica Porter (A):
"I find the word burnout very telling and interesting. I think it's a good descriptor. Like, we've been pushing so hard with so much heat, so much willful force that we burn through ourselves."
Jessica begins by defining burnout not just as a state of exhaustion but as a result of prolonged stress and overexertion. She explains that burnout reflects the depletion of our physical and emotional resources due to constant stress, likening it to an electrical system that becomes "fried" from overuse.
The Physiology of Stress and Burnout
[05:00] Jessica Porter (A):
"Every time we experience stress, our adrenal glands secrete just a little bit of stress hormone. And there are several different stress hormones. And that's not a bad thing."
She elaborates on the role of stress hormones, highlighting that while they are essential for increasing alertness and facilitating action, chronic exposure to high levels can lead to the overtaxing of the adrenal glands. This imbalance results in various symptoms of burnout, including fatigue, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments.
Psychological Factors Contributing to Burnout
[06:30] Jessica Porter (A):
"Do you have belief systems around being a hero, that you're the only one who can handle things? Do you bring this stress home with you?"
Jessica explores the psychological underpinnings of burnout, such as self-imposed pressures and societal expectations. She questions listeners about their mental attitudes toward stress, such as the tendency to carry work-related stress into personal life or the reluctance to take time off due to fear of letting others down.
Managing Stress Through the Subconscious Mind
[07:45] Jessica Porter (A):
"The subconscious mind is a learning machine. It learns all sorts of things, good and bad."
Highlighting the power of the subconscious, Jessica emphasizes that our deeply ingrained beliefs and attitudes towards stress significantly influence how we experience and manage it. She encourages listeners to reprogram these subconscious patterns to break the cycle of stress and burnout.
Guided Hypnosis Session for Stress Relief
The latter half of the episode transitions into a guided hypnosis session designed to alleviate stress and promote restful sleep. During this session, Jessica (A) and a soothing voice (B) guide listeners through a series of relaxation techniques and visualizations aimed at reducing stress and restoring balance.
