The world is constantly changing and there are times when we go through faster changes than normal, bigger changes than we're used to, and less orderly changes than we would like. I actually heard a historian say the other day, if you want to understand a person, understand the world as it was when they were 20. Because we all have this kind of fixed experience of the world based on when we came into our adulthood into a more sort of mature consciousness of the world. And we, I mean most of us sort of carry that version of the world around inside our minds, even sort of inside our bodies as what we think of as normal. And then as we move through time and as things Change as they inevitably do. Big changes violate our original sense of normal. Even the small ones do sometimes like updating your phone. But those changes can be really stressful and uncomfortable. But I think it's important to remember that no matter what's happening outside of us and around us in the world, we are changing with it, no matter what. The only constant is change. And the bigger the change outside of us, the more we respond, the more we change. And one of the ways of responding to a big shift in the world is to contract and feel afraid and resentful that your 20 year old world is being broken. And that makes intuitive sense when a big change on the outside occurs to go into that protective space. And it's usually our first reaction, but it doesn't have to be our only reaction. Because although contracting feels sort of like we're stopping things and resisting the change, we're not. Even that reaction continues to develop. So as the world continues to shift, we get more afraid, more resentful, more resistant, more hardened. And that's not helpful or healthy. Now, as you know, I am a big proponent of relaxation. I think relaxation is the best response to just about any situation in life. Because when we're relaxed, deeper energy flows. When we relax, we allow for a softer, more peaceful, and generally wiser consciousness that rarely comes from tension. Although I imagine some of you are thinking relaxation is not an intelligent response.
D
To the world right now.
A
The changes are coming too quickly, they're too big. And for the most part, I beg to disagree. I think most big shifts in the world are best met with relaxation. Because relaxation allows me to let go of my 20 year old's world. It allows my ego's attachment to the past to dissolve so I can play ball in the present. Relaxation helps me to let go of what I think should be happening, which makes me a bad listener and gets in the way of my intuition. And perhaps most of all, relaxation allows me to be open to the changes taking place within me. Because if the world is changing, I'm changing. So how am I going to change? I have a choice? Am I going to become stronger, more helpful? A version of myself I didn't even know was there? Am I going to meet the moment by evolving or by freaking out and contracting into a ball of fear?
D
Because that's my choice.
A
I believe that when we relax, we allow ourselves to change into the next version of ourselves. For instance, I don't consider myself an activist. I never really have. And in my 20 year old version of the world, I didn't need to be. So I didn't develop those strengths and qualities. But who knows, as I relax in a very rapidly changing world, maybe I will develop my strengths and talents in that direction. Maybe I'm supposed to read history books or knock on doors, or express my views in different, more powerful ways. I don't know. Maybe I'm meant to be of service and bring my talents to the world in ways I'd never thought of or that were not needed in my 20 year old world. And when I relax deeply, I'm able to ask those questions and listen for their answers and let myself grow. Because no matter what, I am changing. One more thing. I believe that we as humans are basically a school of fish or a flock of birds. Like we have a collective consciousness, a collective soul that we're functioning from. And every single one of us is a part of that. And in spite of how crazy the world can feel right now, history shows that we actually have become better and better and better over the long haul. Believe it or not, we have become more empathetic, more connected. We've become more lawful and decent. It hasn't always been pretty, and there will always be ugly behavior in the world. But the human species has gone from isolated cave dwellers to 8 billion individuals, the majority of whom are living in relative safety and comfort. So we've been doing something right. We have been evolving and we will continue to. That's what species do. And no, we can't afford to get complacent and we must help to respond to today's problems. But we can also understand ourselves from a bigger picture. It gives perspective. So what is next for you? What is this moment asking from you, from your gifts and your talents? How are the shifts in the world asking you to grow as you relax and let the deeper energy move through you? What is the world asking of you specifically? How can you be used? Who is the best? You in this moment, as you evolve. So tonight we explore how we can find stability in the world and even grow. So get yourself into a safe and comfortable position and let's begin.
D
Allow your eyes to close easily and gently as we let go. Letting go of tension in the body, letting go of the day, letting go of even. What I just talked about, and this is one of the great benefits of relaxation, is that there's a letting go in it which makes space for other things. Good. So bring your awareness now to your breath. And as you allow your awareness to simply settle on your breath, you're coming back to that metronome of the Breath, it's always here, always here. And you may notice now that when you tune in with your breath during the day, you calm yourself down easily, effortlessly. Good.
A
So now I'd like you to bring.
D
Your awareness up into your eyelids for a moment. And just imagine that your eyelids are feeling very relaxed and heavy, sleepy comfortable. And as your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier, I'd like you to accept the suggestion that your eyelids are in fact, so relaxed that they will not open. Of course, you could open your eyelids.
A
If you wanted to, but we're pretending that you can't. So now I'm going to ask you.
D
To test your eyelids to make sure.
A
You cannot open them by wiggling your eyebrows.
D
So just give your eyebrows a little hug. Good. While your eyes remain closed. Perfect. So this wonderful warm relaxation around your eyes is the same quality of relaxation that you will soon have throughout your entire body. So let's imagine this relaxation around your eyes, now sinking back into your head, just melting back into your head, causing your head to feel very heavy, deliciously heavy on the pillow, like your head is a bowling ball just sinking into the pillow. And as your head is sinking deeper and deeper, the muscles of your face are automatically softening, relaxing, letting go your cheeks and lips, the teeny tiny muscles around your nose, your forehead, all relaxing. Because the day is done. Good. Now allow this wonderful relaxation that you have now in your head. Allow it to move down, down into your shoulders, and just let your shoulders become soft and supple and relaxed. Allow your shoulders to sort of melt into the bed like butter. Your shoulders do all sorts of physical, but also psychological work during the day, kind of carrying loads, being responsible. But now the day is done and your shoulders are letting go, and any responsibilities you carry on, those shoulders have fallen to the floor, and you can pick any or all of them up tomorrow morning. But for right now, you're going deeper and deeper. And as the relaxation makes its way down your arms, like a wave of relaxation rolling down your arms, causing your arms to feel very heavy and relaxed. Your arms surrender to the wave. And then that warm wave breaks right at your palms. Your palms relax and open. And then little separate waves are breaking down every single finger as you go deeper and deeper. And from now on, any sound that you hear in your environment, sounds that other people are making or noises from the street, those sounds are taking you deeper, deeper into relaxation, into this delicious heaviness. As those sounds simply pass through you like waves, even the sound of my voice is simply moving through you, taking you deeper and Deeper into relaxation. Good. So now let's imagine that warm, relaxing energy that began up around your eyes. Let's imagine it moving inside your body, inside your torso. And that warm, relaxing feeling is softening your chest and your upper back as your breath becomes deeper. And you allow that warm, relaxed feeling to move down deep, deeper into your belly, deeper into your body. And the muscles of your lower back are letting go, softening, melting. Because the day is done. The muscles of your belly, your lower body, belly, are softening and releasing your buttocks, relaxing. And now that warm, relaxing feeling is moving, rolling like a wave all the way down your legs, as your legs surrender to this wave. And they feel so heavy, heavy. And the wave breaks right at the soles of your feet. And the soles of your feet feel open, maybe even tingly. And then the wave of relaxation breaks into tiny little waves down every toe as you go deeper and deeper. Imagine now you are in a safe, warm room, and you feel very comfortable and relaxed here. This is your inner sanctuary. It is a place deep inside of you that is always inside of you. And you come here to restore yourself, to renew yourself. And this is your safe place inside. And from this place, you watch the world around you. In front of you is a big glass window. And on the other side of this window, the world is moving with its forward momentum. Cars driving past, people walking with purpose, voices rising and falling in an endless stream of conversations. The world is very active. And within all this activity, screens are flashing headlines blaring, and all sorts of different sounds from every distance. You may even see characters from the news, larger than life, playing above the scene. The world outside of you is in motion, often fast, unpredictable, even chaotic. And yet inside, as you go deeper and deeper, you are still. In fact, the faster the world is moving, the more relaxed you're becoming. The faster the world is moving, the more relaxed you are becoming. As the storm of the world swirls and grows more intense, you are going deeper and deeper, your whole body letting go with every sound, with every flickering light, you find yourself sinking further and further into your own safe space deep inside of you. You are not resisting the world or its chaos. You are allowing it to be as you find your own stillness within it. And as you settle deeper and deeper into this quiet place, your inner being is expanding and expanding. It feels so good to expand in the middle of the world. Your inner being is filling your entire sanctuary. It feels nice to take up space. And as the world continues to do what the world is doing, you continue to expand beyond the window, your inner being reaching out and touching the people in your life, soothing them, inspiring them, lifting them. As you relax and your inner being continues to expand, you are growing and changing. You are part of this world, and you are evolving with it. You are changing as the world is changing, as you ask yourself, how am I growing? How am I changing? What does the world need from me? As you continue to expand and feel into the next layer of you, and you feel yourself growing, becoming stronger and more resilient. And now, as you imagine.
A
Moving through.
D
The world, you're going deeper and deeper into yourself, into this stillness inside. And even in the world, your inner being is expanding, expanding as you evolve, bringing yourself to the world. And now imagine that you are rising, lifting effortlessly from your seat. You're drifting upward, floating higher and higher. The window fades beneath you as you ascend into the sky. And you're viewing the world from above. The city shrinks below, the streets becoming thin ribbons. The people just tiny specks of movement. The chaos.
A
So overwhelming at first.
D
Now looks small, contained. A pattern of energy rather than a force of destruction. As you rise even higher, breaking through the clouds. You are in the vast, quiet expanse of the atmosphere. And from here, you see the world as a whole, a living planet, shifting and evolving over time. And now, as you relax even more, you see the timeline of human history stretching out behind you like a river flowing far into the past. You see the challenges that have always been part of our story. And yet humans have persisted. We adapt, we create, we learn and we grow. We have found love, joy, beauty and meaning, even in the most difficult times. Big changes are not the end of the story. They're just part of it. And you, too are part of this story, as you ask yourself, how am I growing? How am I changing? What does the world need from me? And now, slowly and gently, you begin to descend, floating downward, drifting softly back through the clouds, back to your window, to your inner sanctuary. Back inside your body, you feel so peaceful and relaxed. You have been renewed. And you will renew yourself again and again and again. As you look through the window, you see that the world is sleeping too. And you find yourself in your bed, going deeper and deeper as you drift and float.
A
It.
Sleep Magic Podcast Summary: "Staying Steady In An Unsteady World | Sleep Hypnosis For Releasing Stress"
Episode Release Date: February 26, 2025
Hosted by: Jessica Porter, Hypnotherapist
In the episode titled "Staying Steady In An Unsteady World | Sleep Hypnosis For Releasing Stress", Jessica Porter, the host of Sleep Magic, delves into the challenges of maintaining stability amidst a rapidly changing and often chaotic world. This episode combines insightful discussion with a guided sleep hypnosis session aimed at helping listeners release stress and cultivate inner peace.
Jessica Porter opens the discussion by addressing the relentless pace of change in today's world. She reflects on a historian's perspective:
"If you want to understand a person, understand the world as it was when they were 20." ([02:15])
Porter emphasizes that many individuals carry a fixed perception of the world shaped during their formative years. As the environment evolves, these ingrained perceptions can lead to discomfort and stress. She articulates a fundamental truth:
"The only constant is change." ([03:10])
Porter explores the natural human tendency to respond to significant external changes by contracting—feeling fear, resentment, and resistance. However, she advocates for an alternative response: relaxation. She asserts that relaxation isn't a passive or unwise reaction but a proactive strategy to navigate change effectively:
"I think it's important to remember that no matter what's happening outside of us and around us in the world, we are changing with it, no matter what." ([04:05])
Porter passionately argues that relaxation facilitates deeper energy flows, fostering a peaceful and wise consciousness that tension often obstructs. She counters the misconception that relaxation signifies inaction or lack of intelligence:
"Relaxation allows me to let go of my 20-year-old's world. It allows my ego's attachment to the past to dissolve so I can play ball in the present." ([05:30])
By embracing relaxation, Porter suggests that individuals can become more adaptable, listening better, and tapping into their intuition. This state of calm openness enables personal growth and resilience in the face of change.
Expanding her perspective, Porter likens humanity to a school of fish or a flock of birds, operating from a collective consciousness. She highlights the progressive nature of human evolution:
"History shows that we actually have become better and better and better over the long haul. Believe it or not, we have become more empathetic, more connected." ([07:45])
Despite the persistent presence of negative behaviors, Porter underscores the positive trajectory of human society—from isolated cave dwellers to a global population enjoying unprecedented safety and comfort. She emphasizes the importance of understanding ourselves within this broader context to gain perspective and foster continuous growth.
Transitioning seamlessly from discussion to practice, Porter leads listeners through a comprehensive guided sleep hypnosis session designed to release stress and promote deep relaxation.
Porter begins by encouraging listeners to find a comfortable position and gently close their eyes, initiating the process of letting go:
"Allow your eyes to close easily and gently as we let go. Letting go of tension in the body, letting go of the day..." ([10:27])
She guides listeners to focus on their eyelids, progressively relaxing each part of the body—from the head and shoulders down to the toes—ensuring full-body relaxation.
"Imagine your eyelids are feeling very relaxed and heavy, sleepy comfortable... Your shoulders are letting go, and any responsibilities you carry on, those shoulders have fallen to the floor." ([12:10])
Listeners are led to visualize a safe, warm room—their inner sanctuary—where they can observe the world's chaos from a peaceful vantage point.
"Imagine you are in a safe, warm room, and you feel very comfortable and relaxed here. This is your inner sanctuary." ([20:00])
Porter contrasts the inner peace with the external world's turmoil, reinforcing that inner stillness remains unaffected by outer chaos.
"The faster the world is moving, the more relaxed you're becoming. As the storm of the world swirls and grows more intense, you are going deeper and deeper into your own safe space." ([25:00])
She encourages an expansion of the inner being, fostering a sense of connection and purpose within the larger human narrative.
"Your inner being is expanding beyond the window, reaching out and touching the people in your life, soothing them, inspiring them, lifting them." ([32:55])
Porter integrates a historical lens, reminding listeners of humanity's enduring resilience and capacity for growth. She prompts introspection on personal evolution in alignment with global changes.
"See the timeline of human history stretching out behind you like a river flowing far into the past. You are part of this story, as you ask yourself, how am I growing? How am I changing?" ([40:00])
As the hypnosis session concludes, Porter gently guides listeners back to their current state, reinforcing the serenity and renewal they've achieved:
"You have been renewed. And you will renew yourself again and again and again." ([45:48])
Listeners are left with a profound sense of peace and the tools to maintain stability amidst life's unpredictability. This episode of Sleep Magic serves not only as a guide to better sleep but also as a roadmap for personal growth and resilience in an ever-changing world.
"Staying Steady In An Unsteady World | Sleep Hypnosis For Releasing Stress" is a testament to Jessica Porter's expertise in hypnotherapy and her commitment to enhancing listeners' well-being.
