Happy Sunday. Social. Dallas family. Hey. We are so glad that you're here with us today for Social at the Movies. Week number three. Babe, I have to be honest, this has easily become one of my favorite series that we've ever done.
B
I actually agree. We need to do it again and again. Throughout these last few weeks, we've been diving into powerful films to uncover spiritual truth in unexpected places.
A
Absolutely. Now, I don't want to assume that you've been a part of the whole journey. So let's review week one. We step into the life of Chris Gardner in the powerful movie the Pursuit of Happiness. This was a story of a father's resilience. It reminded us what it looks like to hold on to hope when you feel like everything in your life is falling apart.
B
Then last week In Inside Out 2, we explored what it means to overcome anxiety and live a life where you can control your emotions and not let them control you. But I have to say that today is special.
A
And why is today so special?
B
Well, you know, I get to pick the movie.
A
Oh, my goodness. Now, to be honest, I don't like when you pick movies. Okay. I. You pick movies that make me cry, and I don't want to be vulnerable like that.
B
Okay. We love. We love our pastor being vulnerable. And I have to say. I have to say I'm really good at picking movies. So when I thought to myself, which movie should we choose for today for the Social fam? I heard Christmas Bells.
A
Of course.
B
So should I show the Grinch?
A
No, absolutely not the Grinch.
B
Maybe Home Alone. Lost in New York.
A
Babe, it is July and we in Dallas. It's hot. Okay. No.
B
Y' all know I love a good Christmas movie. Or we also. We could do the Chosen. That's my jam. Because I love Jesus. You know, I'm very spiritual. You know, I'm just very.
A
You know.
B
That's great. Yeah. No, no, no. Okay. So a movie that I saw years ago, which actually has still left a great impact on my life. We're going to watch. Drum roll. Hidden Figures. Such an incredible movie and a film that reminds us that even when the world overlooks you, God, he never does. He sees what's hidden and uses it to fulfill his greatest plans in your life.
A
Absolutely. Matter of fact, give me some. That's a good movie choice. I love that movie. As a matter of fact, it's based on the incredible true story of three brilliant women, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, who worked at NASA and helped launch the first astronaut into orbit. They did it all While breaking barriers of race, gender and expectations. These women weren't just smart. I believe they were called for such a time as this.
B
Yes. And while the world may have overlooked them at the time, heaven did not. That's what I love about this movie, that God has given us each a gift. And if we steward it well, he will open doors that no man can shut.
A
Absolutely. You preaching? He'll shut doors that no man can open. And I love God because he specializes in using what is hidden to fulfill his highest purpose. I want to remind you today the reason we're doing this series is because Jesus was a master storyteller. When he wanted to teach a deep spiritual truth. He didn't start with a list of rules or do long boring lectures. No, he told stories, parables, Stories that were familiar. Stories that relatable and powerful. That's what this series at the movies is all about. I believe that movies are like modern day parables, Modern day stories that hold timeless truths. We're using these films as a launching padding into the real message which is the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
B
Yes. And here at Social Dallas, we believe that God uses our stories to build our faith. Behind every story of redemption, identity, sacrifice or even healing is the greatest story ever told. The story of Jesus.
A
So let's get to the movie. Today we are focusing on the life of Katherine Johnson, a brilliant mathematician whose God given gift opened the door for her to work at NASA during the 1960s. Her mind was extraordinary, but her journey was not easy. She faced obstacles, setbacks, revolution, racism, misogyny and isolation. Yet she kept showing up using the gift that God placed on the inside of her.
B
Yes. And if you've ever felt overlooked or underestimated or even unseen, this story is for you. So lean in, grab your popcorn, little extra butter, extra sauce, extra cholesterol. Yes, and let's watch Hidden Figures. 14, 15, 16. Prime. 18, prime. 20, 21, 22.
A
West Virginia Collegiate Institute is the best school for Negroes in the state. It's the only school past the eighth grade anyway.
B
Near here. Isosceles, scalene, equilateral, rhombus, Trapezoid.
A
Catherine's in the sixth grade.
B
They want to take her early. Tetrahedron. Dodecahedron.
A
They're offering a full scholarship. All you have to do is get there. Ms. Coleman, why don't you solve the equation on the board? We took up a collection amongst the teachers and such. It's not a lot, but it's enough.
B
To help get you settled in.
A
That's more than kind Ms. Sulman, if.
B
The product of two terms is zero, then common sense says at least one of the two terms has to be zero to start with. So if you move all the terms over to one side, you can put the quadratics into a form that can be factored, allowing that side of the equation to equal zero. Once you've done that, it's pretty straightforward from the there.
A
In all my years of teaching, I.
B
Have never seen a mind like the.
A
One your daughter has. Hurry on now, love. You have to go. Let Mama took me in.
B
You have to see what she becomes.
A
Now I know that clip was short, but it is setting us up for what's ahead. And it was so evident watching young Catherine step up to that chalkboard. And she wasn't trying to prove anything. That girl was just being herself and flowing in the fullness of the gift God gave her. I love to watch. That reminds me of what Albert Einstein said. He said that everybody's a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will grow up its whole life believing it's stupid. In essence, he's saying that all of us have a gift. I wonder, do you know the gift that God has placed on the inside of you? And are you stepping up to your chalkboard to flow in your God giving gift?
B
And what gets me is that she didn't even know how rare she was. Other people saw it and called it out. Katherine was just doing what came natural to her. And that's what calling looks like and feels like. It's not forced, it just flows.
A
That's so true. And sometimes we think our gift has to be loud for it to be powerful. But this little girl in a room full of older students said more with her silence and equations than most people will ever say with a mic in their hand. Her life was sunny. I love what the teacher say at the end. You have to see who she becomes. That actually brings up a powerful question today. Who are you becoming even more so. What are you doing doing with the gift that God has put on the inside of you? That scene reminds us of something important. God often gives you a gift before he ever gives you a platform. If you need a platform to start flowing in your gift, then something is wrong. I love what Paul told Timothy. He says, I'm reminding you to stir up the gift of God that's been placed on the inside of you. Paul is letting us know something, that God gives you a gift, that it's your responsibility, ability to stir that gift up. Let this Be the last day you keep your gift hidden. Flow in what God has given you. But you have to know that it's in the hidden years when you're just doing the thing that comes naturally, wondering if anyone will ever see it or value it. God already saw it, and he put it there. I don't think the tragedy isn't lacking a gift. I think the tragedy is in bury your gift. Miles Monroe once said that the wealthiest place on earth is the cemetery. Because buried in the cemetery are books that were never written, songs that were never sung, and dreams that never reached their potential. Hear me, social fam. Don't let the cemetery get the gift that God has placed on the inside of you. Just like Catherine. Flow in your gift. Wow.
B
This is ministering to me. You don't need a platform to be powerful. Just walk in your gift. You know, remember when you preached, I'll never forget it, about wearing your coat.
A
Oh, yeah. The law of 50, 20. I was talking about Joseph, who, just like Catherine, was given a dream, a gift, at a young age. And I talked about how Joseph could have easily not put that coat on and shrunk back because of the criticism and the ridicule. But no, no, no. He had to wear his coat. I don't know who this is for today, but you better wear your coat and work your gift.
B
Yeah. And I think one thing that's super important to know as a believer is that just because you're called, it doesn't mean the path will be easy.
A
Absolutely. That's so true. Katherine didn't walk into NASA getting celebrated. They didn't give her flowers on her first day. In fact, she got rejected in spite of her brilliance. Sometimes when you're gifted, you will deal with rejection for sure. She walked into a room full of judgment and scoffs. And maybe you can relate. Let's be honest. Have you ever had to walk into a room and you knew the room didn't want you there, but you still had to walk in anyway? Everything for Katherine was a struggle. And that's where we find her in this next scene, when the pressure, the isolation, and the injustice finally break her. She has to say something. Let's watch Ruth. Yes, sir. Give me the cape. On the line. Shepard's trajectories need to be updated. Wow. Where is she? You and I are different from each other, Shutter Eyes. Black and white were the futures. I am colored. Don't act like you were there when you wasn't. I don't want no free ride. I'm just sick of Tired running Some nights I cry? Cause I can see the day coming Together we fly oh, but no more running no more running no more running. Where the have you been? Everywhere I look you're not where I need you to be. It's not my imagination. Now where the do you go every day? To the bathroom, sir. To the bathroom? To the bathroom? For 40 minutes a day? What are you doing there? We're T minus 0 here. I put a lot of faith in you. There's no bathroom for me here. What do you mean there's no bathroom for you here? There is no bathroom. There are no colored bathrooms in this building or any building outside the West Campus, which is half a mile away. Did you know that I have to walk to Timbuktu just to relieve myself? And I can't use one of the handy bikes. Picture that, Mr. Harrison. My uniform, skirt below my knees, my heels, and a simple string of pearls. Well, I don't own pearls. Lord knows you don't pay colors enough to afford pearls. And I work like a dog, day and night, living off a coffee from a pot none of you want to touch. So excuse me if I have to go the restroom a few times a day. It There we have it. No more colored restrooms, no more white restrooms, just plain old toilets. Go wherever you want, please. Preferably closer to your desk. Here at NASA, we all pee the same color. Wow.
B
That was so powerful.
A
Yeah. You could feel all the emotion of that moment. You know, Catherine wasn't trying to make a scene. She was just trying to do her job. But when the injustice got too loud, she had to speak up. You know, that moment reminds me of a woman in the Bible by the name of Esther. Esther was a Jewish woman living in the time when her people were being threatened by with destruction. She had been elevated to the position of queen, but no one knew her true identity. When the law went out to wipe out her people, she was faced with a choice. Stay silent and safe or speak up and risk everything.
B
And what I love about Esther is that she chose courage. She walked into the king's palace uninvited, something that could have cost her her life. And she used her voice to save her people.
A
Absolutely. And here's what blows my mind. The book of Esther never once mentions the name of God so great. Not one time. But even when you don't see his name, you can see his hand. He is the hidden figure in the story. Moving through closed doors, working behind the scenes, positioning people for his purpose. Hear me, social fam. God is still doing the same thing today. Just like Katherine, just like Esther, just like you. You may not feel seen, but God sees. You may not feel heard, but God hears. And he is still writing stories where ordinary people rise up with courage to do extraordinary things.
B
And if you've ever felt like you're doing everything you can and you still feel unseen, you're not alone. This scene is for you. God sees what no one else sees. He sees the extra miles you're walking. He sees the prayers that you're praying. He sees the tears. He sees the weight that you're carrying. And he is not ignoring it.
A
You know, even after that incredible scene, it's not like Katherine's life goes perfect. She still faces challenges that are outside of her control. Let's continue to watch how God writes Kathleen's story.
B
You wanted to see me, sir?
A
Have a seat. Is there Something wrong, Mr. Harrison? No, there's nothing wrong. In fact, our IBM is churning out numbers in fractions of the time any human can. Present company included. That's good then. Maybe. Thing is, the Cape's now insisting on doing all the backups down there on site. I see. So we won't be running backups here. And truth be told, we can't keep up with that IBM anyhow. Long story short, we no longer need a computer in this department. Progress is a double edged sword. Let's have you report back to the west coast for now. Let's see if we can find another assignment. Thank you, sir. Katherine, I'm. I'm sorry about this. It's out of my hands, if you can believe that honesty. Catherine, we heard you got engaged. Yes. Start for love. You. They're lovely. Mr. Harrison's idea, really. Although I suspect his wife did the picking up. Can't imagine he has an eye for anything but numbers. No. You have a great whim. Did good work around here, Catherine. It Mercury. Named after the winged messenger of the gods in roman mythology. Today, three years, two months and three days afterwards, we're ready after 10 girl to try again to put our first man into orbit. To put Colonel John. And Colonel John Glenn will be the first American to orbit the Earth. As you can see, there are thousands of people here today to witness this historic event. Paul, something's off here. These landing coordinates don't match yesterday's. The IBM just ran them. Well, then the IBM's wrong yesterday, right? Things wrong today, Paul, Am I right? It appears so. The IBM's been spot on up to this point, John. But we'll run it again, see what it comes up with. I'll be honest with you, Al. When I fly, I fly the machine. And right now, seems like this machine's flying me. We're on the same page, John. Our guys are on it. Let's get the girl to check the numbers. The girl? Yes, sir. You mean Katherine? Yes, sir. The smart one. I mean, she says they're good. I'm ready to go. All right. We'll get into it. Roger. Sam, go find Katherine Goble. She needs to verify Glenn's go, no go. We're staying on the ground. Yes, sir. Looking for Katherine Goble. It's Katherine Johnson now. They need you to verify these coordinates. All right. Give us some space. So to work as we await Colonel John Glenn's launch. A truly historic day for America. The country has waited for several months. Through many failed unmanned Atlas rocket tests. And ten scheduled manned attempts. Which were cancelled for various mechanical or system complications. All the final tests and checks are being conducted. John Glenn is ready to board the Friendship 7. But today we remain truly optimistic. And it's a go day in all regards. The capsule is ready. The rocket itself is a. Okay. And the weather here at Cape Canaveral is. We are being told that Mission Control at NASA is conducting a final check of the launch and recovery coordinates. Including the go no go calculations so crucial to a safe and successful launch, launch and recovery. After years of waiting and months of delays. Colonel Glenn is finally ready for that space flight that we've been waiting for with so much anticipation. Could indicate a hesitancy on NASA's behalf. But let us say without reservation that the safety of Colonel John Glenn is paramount to the mission and to the nation itself. No, sir. We're still a go. Yes, sir. That's it. What the devil are you doing? Are you taking a break? Yes, say yeah. Yes, say yeah. Yes, say yeah. Don't you want know that we're able that unknown makes us major yes, we can God and my alchemy yes, we can our 1 and 1 equals 3 yes, we can I feel it like lightning in the forest yes, we can each other Give it time. Sir. Bad 14. Catherine. Sir, we've got pad 14 on the box. All right, let me in. This is Langley. We have the coordinates confirmed. Standby. Langley, we can confirm the go no go. Point for reentry is 16.11984 degrees latitude. Minus 165.2356 degrees longitude. Launch window is a go. The landing coordinates match. That is very good news, Al. It's a little hard to trust something you can't look in the eyes. That's right, Colonel. Katherine did manage to calculate a few decimal points further than that hunk of metal. Well, I will take every digit you got. Be sure to thank her for me. Gentlemen, let's launch this rocket. Good luck, Friendship Seth. Godspeed, Langley. Here at Cape Canaveral, the countdown has resumed. As Colonel John Glenn is now aboard the Friendship 7. High above the Atlas Rocket on Pad 14. A height of over 93ft so far. The countdown is. These pictures are from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The gantry is now moving back and we are go for launch. The Mercury spacecraft umbilical is out. T minus 10 seconds and counting. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Zero. Ignition. You are in Max Q for Roger. I kept. All systems are reported go. 20 seconds to seco. The trajectory is still a. Okay, go for seco. On to that capcom. Go for SEO. 0G. And I feel fine. John Glenn reports everything looks good. Oh, that view is tremendous. Roger that, Friendship seven. You are a go for orbit. Thank you, capcom. Did y' all see that right there? Oh, gosh.
B
Where did you get that?
A
Hey, don't worry about that, okay? Hold my helmet. I want to know. Social Fam. Did you see that? I mean, Katherine, she got fired. She got let go. She was dismissed. And yet, when the mission was on the line, they called for her. They called her by name. What I love is. She did not allow the offenses in her heart to block her obedience. She did not let being overlooked stop her from being being prepared. She walked right back into that room, owned her moment. And helped launch a man into space. That right there is what Proverbs 18:16 means when it says, your gift will make room for you. Katherine didn't fight for the room. Her gift did. Her preparation did. Her character did. So maybe you've been passed over, pushed aside. Or told you're not needed anymore. But I came in a silver spacesuit to tell you today if go God made you and gave you the gift. The room is not closed. It's just not ready yet. And when the moment comes, they won't just need a person. They'll need you. So stay ready. Stay excellent. Stay planted. Because your gift will make room for you.
B
Yes. And we want you to know that we are standing with you here at Social. Dallas, you may feel overlooked, you may seem weary. But just know that you have never walked a day alone. God, the author of life, is writing your story. And he is not done with you. We are praying for you. And actually, I want to take a moment and pray for you right now. So, Father, I thank you for every single person that is watching right now. You see them, Elroy. That is one of your names. The expressions of the Father is that you see us, the God who. You know them by name, you know their story, you know they're coming and going and you care. And so I pray today, despite what they're facing, that they would have a supernatural strength that invades their soul today. To give them a fresh wind, a fresh grit, to continue to stay the course, to. To align with your perfect will, despite the adversity, despite the challenges, God, that they are fixed on you. Father, I bless them today. And we believe, Father, that you will continue to finish what you started in their lives. In Jesus name, amen.
A
Amen. Amen. Social, Dallas. This has been such an incredible series. I think we need to do at the movies every single year. What do y' all think? Yes, Social, I just want to say thank you for going on the journey with us this summer at the movies. I love you so much and can't wait to see you in person next week. We'll be back at Gillies. Three services, 8:30, 10:30, 12:45. So get your face in the place. Pick one or two. Hey, come to all three. It's summertime. What else you gonna do? It's hot.
B
It is hot. We love these social family, stay faithful, stay expectant, and if anything, just remember, you know how we get down. I think you should keep showing up, because if you keep showing up. Well, you know what? Hold on just one, one sec. Let's do this again. If you keep showing up.
A
Yeah. Keep growing up.
B
See y' all next Sunday.
A
We out.
