On today's show, we're going to explore the biggest Instagram updates that we need to know as marketers, including Is Instagram actually hurting smaller accounts by lowering the video quality? This is a bizarre story. Also, a new way to increase your reach with carousel posts and a new way to create more content for both threads and Instagram that I'm actually pretty excited about. My name is Jerry Potter. Yes, it rhymes with the boy wizard. Host of the Social Media Marketing Talk Show, a Social Media examiner production where we break down all the latest social media news and what it means for marketers like you. Today I'm joined by Chelsea Pites. Chelsea teaches sales professionals how to leverage social media and technology to build a powerful personal brand and develop content that generates real leads. Host of the Chelsea Pites podcast and her most recent book is called what to Post. Chelsea, welcome to the show.
Chelsea Pites
Thanks for having me. You wore the perfect shirt for your intro.
Jerry Potter
Yes, I do have a Harry Potter shirt on today. So let's talk about this video quality thing. This is this story and I feel like it's weird, but it also got blown out of proportion where Instagram was changing the video quality of some content, among other things. So run down exactly what was reported and then your thoughts on it.
Chelsea Pites
Yeah, so from what I understand is that they were saying older content or content that was no longer performing. And in my mind, I go back to the stuff that I posted two years ago or three years ago. And as I got into the article, it talked a little bit more about this question had come up about why do my old stories look blurry? Like, why do they look lower quality? And my assumption is somebody's going back into their highlights or maybe looking into their archive. And so this kind of spurred this, this question of why is my old content look not so great? And then Adam Osseri Said, well, yeah, that's kind of something that we do. We have this dynamic content system that looks at content that is older or maybe no longer performing. And I guess, I mean, I'm not a tech guru. I'm assuming it takes a lot of resources for them to compress and like have video quality. And so it sounds like they're taking the higher quality, more higher performing videos, keeping those in a higher quality and downgrading the quality of some of the older or non performing videos. But he did say if those start to take off again, which they could because it is a search engine and somebody could come across it later on, that they will then put that quality back onto the video if they took it off.
Jerry Potter
Yeah. The thing that surprised me the most about this is somebody who obviously looks and hears about all this stuff more than the average person is that Instagram has been the most stubborn of any of the platforms of we will demote low quality video.
Chelsea Pites
Yes.
Jerry Potter
And now we're going to make your videos low quality. Like, which is it?
Chelsea Pites
I know, I just give up. I don't know. I don't know the answers. Why? What's happening over there?
Jerry Potter
Yeah, it definitely does fall into the category of this is out of my control. I'm not going to spend more than five minutes being upset about it. But they said if a post receives minimal engagement after its initial viewing period, then the system will automatically switch to a lower quality version. But I didn't really see anything about what is the initial viewing period and does it vary? So.
Chelsea Pites
Right.
Jerry Potter
All right, well, we'll see if there's any more updates on it, but I thought we'd get more just because Adam has been so transparent the last couple years about a lot of this stuff. So. Well, carousels have obviously been huge on Instagram and have become, you know, next to reels, a great way to reach people who don't already follow you. And now a little tweak that Instagram has said is, hey, you can do this other thing and now reach more people. So what's this update about?
Chelsea Pites
Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this. If you add music to your carousel post, it's actually going to now be eligible to be served into the Reels feed. So there's two feeds. There's the home feed. When you open up your app, you're going to see your home feed and it's a variety of different formats and types of content. And then if you go to the reels feed, historically it's only been reels and now what they're doing is essentially putting carousel posts that you can swipe through into that reels feed as well. So you might see a video, a reel, a reel and then a carousel post. And I've, I've tried to do a little experimenting. Now I like carousel, so it might be showing me more than the average user, but I'm trying to say, how many reels do I see until I get to a carousel? How many reels do I see till I get to a carousel? So the big important thing is that if you want it to be eligible to go there, you do have to add the music. So if you have a carousel post that does not have music, it's not going to be eligible to be shown there in the reels feed. So now you have a potential of up to three times of your carousel post being shown to someone because you're going to have it shown twice in the regular home feed to the same person. And then on top of that, maybe getting shown to also the people that don't know you in the reels feed, maybe even getting under the explore page. I mean, so it really does give you a lot of opportunity to not only make reels and hope that it gets seen by non followers.
Jerry Potter
And in your testing, did you come up with a ratio at least for your own account? Like how far?
Chelsea Pites
No, it wasn't exact. Some days were different than others. But pretty much every single day now, every single viewing period that I am in Instagram in the reels feed, I will see carousel post now.
Jerry Potter
Okay, and is it weird swiping sideways all of a sudden in reels or does it just feel natural?
Chelsea Pites
No, I thought it would be, but.
Jerry Potter
You can all because I haven't seen any.
Chelsea Pites
Yeah, you can also tell like you can see that it's not a screen. There's no confusion if you're familiar with the feed. You're like, oh, this is a, this is a carousel post and it shows the dots lit up so that you swipe through it. So I actually like the experience. It's not strange at all. I thought it was going to be a little bit weird because I had heard about this coming and I find it totally like I'm just in the regular home feed almost.
Jerry Potter
Okay. I have never been watching or swiping through a carousel or creating one and thought, oh, I sure wish I could add a song to this, but now I'm going to. I already did one, but it's like, yeah, exactly now sure you want to tell me there's more reach? I'm Happy to do that. So, all right, updates on improving the workflow on Instagram. A couple of cool things that have come out we'll tell you about here in a second. We hear about it all the time at Social Media Examiner. Now they're rolling out to everybody. But remind us exactly what these are in the way that Instagram is describing them.
Chelsea Pites
Sure. I think I was one of the original people that had it. When we talked about it, I actually had it and I was like, oh, okay, this is a new thing. And I still have never used it. You know, you go to those business conferences like you and I go to a lot. We at one point in our lives probably had some third party app where you could say, oh, you want my information? Here you go. And it would be like a digital business card with a few other bells and whistles. And so it's basically that it's a little bit more of a creative way to share your account, to share your profile. You can put a little bit of your own personality in the styling of it, but I'm not sure how many people are actually going to use it. But it is an upgraded way to a more creative way to share your profile with someone else.
Jerry Potter
Well, and we were playing with it this week with the other Social Media examiner staff and you can share it like via text message, like I texted mine to somebody and then it opens an Instagram. And so I would see with brands it might be an interesting way to where you could, like if you use WhatsApp for messaging or different things like that, that'd be a good way to kind of say, hey, if you follow us on Instagram and it's a little bit nicer looking and more enticing than a instagram.com username, little bit of a.
Chelsea Pites
Better customer experience, a little easier to get them into your world for sure.
Jerry Potter
Yeah. So this might be something to catch us on. Or it might be something only Instagram was excited about. We'll know by this time next year. So, big improvements being tested right now in the drafts workflow for Instagra Instagram reels, which I think is really, really cool. What is this update about, Chelsea?
Chelsea Pites
Yes, I know you and I were so excited about this because if you've ever made multiple drafts and saved them into your reels drafts, sometimes it's hard to tell which one is which, especially if you've batch created content. So now they're going to allow you to name every one of your drafts, which I think is super, super helpful. And you're going to be able to schedule those drafts right from that screen. So naming them and scheduling them is going to be a lot easier when you're in your drafts folder. So if you're making a lot of content and you're batch creating and you're saving it, it's going to be a whole lot easier to use.
Jerry Potter
Yeah, I think it's a great update. And just the ability to schedule there, you know, you think about it doesn't seem like it's that hard to click around to the different screens, but if you're trying to go quickly and I remember working in an agency and managing multiple accounts, that can make a huge difference. So hopefully that'll roll out to everybody soon. It's always nice to know how our stuff is doing. And on reels we can certainly see how many followers are reached and how many non followers were reached and different things like that. But a new metric that they're testing right now, which I think could be helpful. Tell us about this.
Chelsea Pites
Yeah, I'm really excited about this. You know, I don't get excited about metrics very often, but I think this one is really going to be helpful, especially for marketers. So this one is unconfirmed tests, so hopefully it'll roll out of the top sources for where views come on your reels so you can actually drill down and not just see views. And these are the four things that they're going to show. They're going to show the views that came from recommendations, the views that came from the feed, views that came from reshares, and views that came from profiles. So I think that's actually going to be a nice little upgrade if they roll that out to everyone.
Jerry Potter
Yeah, I was thinking that if you had like one of your pinned reels, for example, on the profile and you just kept driving people there from your stories or from your email list or anything like that. It'd be interesting to see. You could drive that percentage up and just kind of all that data is really helpful. I know YouTube is my primary platform and we have that data far even beyond that. And it's so useful to know how is this stuff getting out there. So very cool to see that happening. All right. This is always helpful to get tips directly from Instagram and they're testing on screen tips for. This is specifically for reels. I understand as well. What have you seen with this?
Chelsea Pites
Yes, I have not seen this in the wild yet, but I have seen a screenshot like you and I have seen. And this is going to be a little data point that's going to pop up on the screen and give you some information as to maybe why this particular reel is outperforming other reels that you have posted. So it would be something that only you see. And so, for example, you would look at the reel and sort of right under where the first line of the caption that's at least showing in the screenshot that we saw, there's going to be almost like a little sentence and it is kind of hard to see, but it will say something to the effect of your strong hook. Kept people watching for more than three seconds. So it's kind of like a little Instagram reels coach that's like, hey, this is working and here's what's. What's working. And so, I mean, I don't know, I feel like it could be a kind of a cool thing. I think a lot of people might think, well, it's just one more thing to look at or make it feel cluttered. But I think it's always interesting to get feedback directly from Instagram. I just am curious how accurate or how specific specific that feedback would be.
Jerry Potter
We've heard talks about AI driven feedback and the hook is keeping people watching. It certainly sounds a little bit more insightful than this video. Got more views than normal. Make more like it. Right. Which is what we kind of had in the past, so.
Chelsea Pites
Exactly.
Jerry Potter
Yeah. So I think that's kind of cool. All right. Seems like there's a new Instagram sticker every other day, but I think especially for businesses that work internationally and use WhatsApp, this is going to be a cool update. They're rolling out a new WhatsApp sticker that you can use in your Instagram stories, right? Yeah.
Chelsea Pites
If you're a WhatsApp user, this is going to be awesome for you because you're going to be able to add it to your Instagram stories. And again, that user experience that we talked about earlier, it's so much easier to just click on a button and be taken directly to where you want to go versus closing out your app and going to another one or clicking on a link and logging back in. So again, that user experience connecting all of their platforms. This is something that we've seen meta do a lot in the past between Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Jerry Potter
And then another update for stories is a new way to share a different way to share photos, it sounds like in story. So what are we seeing with this?
Chelsea Pites
If you're into the collage vibe and you want to do a little photo dump, I haven't actually seen what the three options are, but allegedly there are three different options for new photo collage formats or templates. I know we already have templates to do a collage of sorts within stories. So there is that template option, but this is going to be above and beyond that, probably something a little bit more creative. So if you're into photo dumps or collages, get ready because hopefully they're going to be rolling out three new options for users.
Jerry Potter
Okay. And then Instagram developing a feature where we'll be able to go on to anyone's profile and sort the reels by most viewed content easily, they say. Which hopefully that would be the case. What are your thoughts on this? Do you see some use cases for this? Do you like this?
Chelsea Pites
Again, I just want playlists. I don't know why we're we're having all these other cool things. Like it's been four years. We would love a playlist. I know you know as a YouTuber how powerful those can be. Yeah. But yes, this is an option where you're going to have a dropdown. You're going to be able to say, hey, just show me the most viewed reels from this creator, which for some creators is going to be incredibly amazing. You and I were chatting earlier that since we've been making reels for so long, a lot of our most viewed reels are from years ago. I don't know if you'd find my what I would deem my most valuable. But like you said, we can certainly pin those up to the top of our post. But yeah, that's going to be a cool thing for some creators to be able to just sort by their most viewed and have their most viewed scene.
Jerry Potter
Well, and I think it can be great for market research too because when I'm Looking for content ideas on any platform. You know when you can find those outliers, when somebody had something do way better than their average, you can use that as inspiration and get similar success. So I kind of like that, the ability to be able to go and go, oh, this is interesting. But I totally get what you're saying. Especially if a brand pivoted. Maybe if this rolls out, we go to our profiles and we want to archive a few things that come up in the top nine.
Chelsea Pites
That's always a good idea. I hadn't even thought about that, but because a lot of people aren't going to think of that. So if you've had a pivot, whatever that pivot may be, you might want to go back and, and see which ones come up and decide if that's what you would like to come up.
Jerry Potter
Yeah. Because that is, that is something to keep in mind, is your overall brand and especially if these videos are not going to get seen otherwise anyway, so. All right. Instagram has Talked about how DMing is a huge part of the future of Instagram. Some days it feels like that's all they care about, is people DMing and sharing content among friends. And they are now adding more ways to manage the dms, which is always good if you are a marketer who manages an account that gets a lot of DMs. So what are these updates that you're seeing? Yes.
Chelsea Pites
So there's going to be some new filters in your inbox, which the filters are follower count, verified accounts, brands and creators. And while that in and of itself is going to be helpful for a lot of marketers, I think my favorite part of this is the access to just story replies. In fact, I do have this. I don't know if I don't think I have the other ones yet, but I've had for a while a separate little button that says story replies, which is nice because if you are an avid story or like I am, it's nice to be able to be like, here's all my story replies over here and here's DMS from people that are DMing me from content or for some other reason. So it's just going to be another way for you to organize. And certainly brands that are wanting to work with influencers or other creators or collaborations, this will be really helpful so that you can just immediately go to brands, creators, verified accounts even.
Jerry Potter
Do you still try and reply to all your story replies?
Chelsea Pites
I do. I don't always get to them right away, but yes, I really do.
Jerry Potter
That's not surprising. I mean, you obviously get clients by building relationships with them, so.
Chelsea Pites
Absolutely.
Jerry Potter
Certainly makes sense. I always feel bad when I don't do it fast enough. And then I'm looking at it and I'm like, what was this reply to or.
Chelsea Pites
Because it disappears, but now they've been keeping it and I'm like, thank goodness, because I had no idea what I was replying to.
Jerry Potter
Oh, so it's showing up longer now.
Chelsea Pites
I am seeing that. Yes. Yes.
Jerry Potter
Okay. Yeah, that is helpful. Somebody must have said something like, all right, come on. We know they expire after 24 hours, but let us know what they said. This is awesome to so we don't respond to the wrong thing.
Chelsea Pites
Thank you. Yeah.
Jerry Potter
Yes. Yeah. Threads continues to grow. There was a report this week about how threads is growing at a million new users a day and they're at 275 million users. But I also love that it's becoming easier for us to use as marketers. Scheduling from third party tools and now a feature to be able to create a thread from Instagram. So what does this look like, Chelsea?
Chelsea Pites
Yeah, so people are probably familiar with. They updated this. I'm not even sure when it was, if it was this year or last year, but they made it. So when you're looking at your own comments on a post, you can actually share one of those comments to a story and it will layer itself over the actual post. So it's similar to that where you'd go to the comment, you'd swipe it and there's going to be a new little icon there that looks like the threads icon and you'll be able to start a brand new thread over with that particular comment over on Threads. So again, we are connecting the different parts of the metaverse, the Instagram world, threads with Instagram. So a lot of people who are using threads are going to love that.
Jerry Potter
Yeah, I have it and I tested it and I'm not that active on threads, but I thought, okay, this might be something that I would use. And the way I. I would use, and I think this is. Could be relevant for other brands too, is sometimes you reply to a comment, it's just, thanks, yeah, appreciate it, you know, whatever. But other times you reply with something thoughtful or meaningful or valuable, like, you know, you're solving a problem. Here's what I would do. And then, you know, sometimes I'll look at that and I'll go, oh, that'd be a good email, or that'd be a good thread. Or that'd be a good video that I could make. And so the fact that you can do it that quickly again.
Chelsea Pites
Yeah.
Jerry Potter
If people who are already on lots of networks like we are as marketers are going to get on threads, that the less friction, I think the better.
Chelsea Pites
Agreed. And I think if you're going to pin the comment, that would be a good indicator of maybe you'd want to start a thread.
Jerry Potter
Yeah. And we mentioned earlier about how Adam Aseri from Instagram has been mostly transparent, or it feels like it. I'm sure they don't tell us everything, but there were some posts and accounts that were deleted and blocked erroneously and he came out to kind of say, hey, here's what happened. So what was the explanation around this?
Chelsea Pites
Yeah, I think probably more surprising was that people probably thought it was AI and according to Adam Mosseri, it was actually humans that made the mistakes. You know, humans. Right. And of course that's going to happen. I foresee that happening many, many times and we probably don't even know the amount of times that it's actually happened. But apparently there was some blockages and deletions of accounts and people were very confused and didn't understand what was going on. And according to Adam Mosseri said, you know, we were lacking some context. We actually had human beings. I like the idea of having human beings possibly like review some of that content too. So I think we're, we're going to see probably a lot of this in the future as well. And there's probably a lot of the times that this has happened and we didn't even know it. And hopefully they fixed those things when they caught that.
Jerry Potter

Episode Title: Instagram Updates: Video Quality Downgrades, DM Inbox Features, and More
Host: Michael Stelzner, Social Media Examiner
Release Date: November 11, 2024
In this episode of the Social Media Marketing Talk Show, hosted by Jerry Potter and featuring guest Chelsea Pites, the duo delves into the most recent updates on Instagram that are pivotal for marketers. The discussion spans a range of topics from video quality adjustments to enhanced Direct Message (DM) features, aiming to equip marketers with the knowledge to navigate Instagram’s evolving landscape effectively.
Chelsea Pites raises concerns about Instagram’s recent move to downgrade the video quality of older or underperforming content.
[02:09] Chelsea Pites: "It sounds like they're taking the higher quality, more performing videos, keeping those in a higher quality and downgrading the quality of some of the older or non-performing videos."
This strategy appears to be a resource management technique, potentially affecting smaller accounts that rely on consistent video quality to engage their audience. Jerry Potter expresses surprise and frustration over this change:
[03:27] Jerry Potter: "Instagram has been the most stubborn of any of the platforms to demote low quality video. And now we're going to make your videos low quality. Like, which is it?"
The conversation highlights the uncertainty surrounding the criteria for what constitutes "low-performing" and how this affects content visibility.
A significant development discussed is Instagram’s update allowing carousel posts with added music to be featured in the Reels feed. Chelsea Pites explains:
[04:36] Chelsea Pites: "If you add music to your carousel post, it's actually going to now be eligible to be served into the Reels feed."
This change means that marketers can potentially triple their content’s exposure—appearing in both the home feed and the Reels feed—thereby increasing reach to both existing followers and new audiences. Chelsea conducted experiments observing increased visibility of carousel posts in the Reels feed, noting:
[06:00] Chelsea Pites: "Pretty much every single viewing period that I am in Instagram in the reels feed, I will see carousel post now."
This update encourages the integration of music into carousel posts to maximize engagement and reach.
Instagram is rolling out digital business cards, offering a more creative and interactive way to share profiles. Chelsea Pites provides insight:
[07:48] Chelsea Pites: "It's basically a little bit more of a creative way to share your account, to share your profile. You can put a little bit of your own personality in the styling of it."
These digital business cards can be shared via text messages, enhancing the ease with which brands and influencers can connect with potential followers and collaborators.
Chelsea Pites highlights enhancements in the Reels drafting process, which include the ability to name and schedule drafts directly within the drafts folder:
[09:18] Chelsea Pites: "Now they're going to allow you to name every one of your drafts, which I think is super, super helpful. And you're going to be able to schedule those drafts right from that screen."
This improvement streamlines content planning and management, especially beneficial for marketers handling multiple accounts.
A noteworthy update is the introduction of detailed metrics for Reels, allowing creators to analyze the sources of their views. Chelsea Pites elaborates:
[10:21] Chelsea Pites: "We're going to show the views that came from recommendations, the views that came from the feed, views that came from reshares, and views that came from profiles."
This granular insight empowers marketers to understand better where their content is performing best and adjust strategies accordingly.
Instagram is testing on-screen tips that provide immediate feedback on Reels performance. Chelsea Pites describes:
[11:31] Chelsea Pites: "It would say something to the effect of your strong hook. Kept people watching for more than three seconds."
These tips act as a coaching mechanism, giving creators real-time insights into what aspects of their content are working, although Chelsea questions the specificity and accuracy of such feedback.
Enhancing cross-platform functionality, Instagram has introduced a WhatsApp sticker for Stories. Chelsea Pites notes the benefits:
[13:05] Chelsea Pites: "You’re going to be able to add it to your Instagram stories... it’s so much easier to just click on a button and be taken directly to where you want to go."
This feature simplifies the process of directing audiences to WhatsApp, fostering better user engagement and seamless communication.
Instagram is expanding its Stories features with new photo collage formats. While specific details are limited, Chelsea Pites anticipates more creative options:
[13:41] Chelsea Pites: "There are going to be three different options for new photo collage formats or templates... something a little bit more creative."
These additions cater to users who enjoy creating visually engaging content through photo dumps and collages.
A new feature allows users to sort Reels by their most-viewed content directly from profiles. Chelsea Pites shares her thoughts:
[14:27] Chelsea Pites: "You’re going to be able to say, hey, just show me the most viewed reels from this creator."
This functionality aids in market research and content strategy by highlighting high-performing reels, although Chelsea expresses a desire for more advanced features like playlists.
Instagram is improving its DM inbox with new filters and organizational tools. Chelsea Pites explains:
[16:23] Chelsea Pites: "There’s going to be some new filters in your inbox, which the filters are follower count, verified accounts, brands and creators."
Additionally, accessing story replies has become more streamlined, allowing marketers to manage interactions more efficiently and foster better relationships with followers and collaborators.
Threads continues to grow, now with scheduling capabilities from third-party tools and the ability to create threads directly from Instagram comments. Chelsea Pites describes:
[18:19] Chelsea Pites: "You can actually share one of those comments to a story and it will layer itself over the actual post... start a brand new thread over with that particular comment on Threads."
This integration enhances content distribution and engagement across platforms, providing more avenues for interaction and content dissemination.
Addressing recent confusion over account deletions and blockages, Chelsea Pites relays Adam Mosseri’s explanation:
[20:06] Chelsea Pites: "According to Adam Mosseri, it was actually humans that made the mistakes... we are going to see probably a lot of this in the future as well."
This clarification underscores the ongoing challenges Instagram faces with content moderation and the reliance on human oversight alongside automated systems.
The episode wraps up with reminders about the upcoming Social Media Marketing World event and additional resources for listeners to further explore Instagram’s updates and strategies. Chelsea Pites shares her contact details for those interested in following her work.
[21:15] Chelsea Pites: "Best place to find me is on the gram, of course. It's just Chelsea Pipes. It's P E I T Z."
