In the United States, there are only 27 states where the death penalty is an allowable conviction for especially heinous crimes of murder or terrorism. Tennessee, being one of those states, currently holds the youngest woman of her time who was convicted of the death penalty: Christa Pike. The crime she committed was so brutal that an investigator quoted her as being "the most evil person" he'd ever met... at just 18 years old! Just like Christa, Colleen Slemmer was hoping for a better future when she left home to travel to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for the Job Corps. Unfortunately, she crossed paths with Christa, who wanted her gone. What led Christa to take the life of Colleen Slemmer in 1995? Because they were worried about the safety of the students, they called for the city to step in immediately to fix the dangerous situation. But the answer they got was the exact opposite of what they asked for, culminating in the death of two students, Phillip Gibbs and James Earl Green.Listen as Mrs. Gailya Porter, a survivor, recounts the events that transpired before that evening and the profound impact it continues to have on the university. "HOW!?"How does a student, let alone a three-sport athlete, get stuck upside down into a rolled-up gym mat? How did no one hear him scream or see him dive in, even though surveillance showed other students enter the gym with him? How, even with all of the evidence, do authorities still believe this was just a freak accident?Full Source Notes:southernshadowspodcast.com Produced by 4Seven Media, LLCMusic written and produced by J.Chris
