Ryan Whitney
What is up folks? And welcome to episode 577 in the middle of August of Spitting Chiclets. I'm joined by Yant and Biz. Great to see these guys again, but first we got to talk about Pink Whitney. We got to talk about New Amsterdam's own Pink Whitney. As you guys nod and approval, we're going to discuss the Internet Invitational. We'll be leaving on Tuesday. Can't wait to see you guys Biz. Haven't seen you in what feels like forever and I think Pink Whitney. I'm hoping Pink Whitney is just being crushed in the Ozarks at Big Cedar Lodge for a very special kind of unknown. Don't know what to expect. Golf tournament of some YouTube golf creators. Yes, guys, at one point we called ourselves the kings of YouTube Golf. Well, I don't know if that's true. We're going to find out. But we are the kings of Pink Whitney. We're the. You guys are the princes. You're the prince. Prince. One prince. I'm the king. I'm the friggin king. I got pink skin right now. I Love my pink drink. And go right now and grab a big old bottle or a little nip or a medium sized bottle and just enjoy it with your friends and family. As summer kind of is coming to an end, guys, it makes me sick. It makes me sick to my stomach. Crazy biz. You might, you might. You're probably like, God, like, I, I, I, I'm in Vancouver now. Like, are you Victoria? Where are you right now?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, after this Ozark trip, I come back for like, like four or five days and then I actually make the move over to Victoria. So that's kind of like my chill out month where like I'm, you know. Yeah, it's such a, it's such a quaint little town there in Oak Bay where I kind of just mosey around where you're not like downtown Vancouver and, and, and I wouldn't say it's exactly chaos here, but you're in a downtown major city in Canada. So I'm excited for that and, and more downtime till I eventually have to ramp things back up for the Chick Cup. And that's the thing too is like, I need a little bit of rest and relaxation and focus time on what's to come in Boston. I don't know what this lunatic in the other screen here has planned for me. I know he's got ex convicts on his team who will have anklets on while we're playing. So I just have to mentally prepare for war as well as continue to fine tune my team with Terry Ryan, which we've seemed to narrow it down. The only question mark right now is con man. Like what type of shape is con man? And it's the same story over and over. But according to Terry Ryan, according to con man, he's in some of the best shape of his life. So, yeah, I'm excited. And right now, pretty much after the Ozarks, it's all focus goes on Boston and destroying the Boston Stranglers.
Ryan Whitney
Okay. And yeah, it's before I want to go to you, but we're going to have to address something here. And I think this is, this is quite obvious to all of us, at least post episode. Last week you thought a cod.
Biz Nasty
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
And so did I. Kind of like, because I didn't know. So I was like, oh, Yan's nose. You thought a card meant catch of the day and it wasn't an actual fish. I, I don't know. Are you?
Biz Nasty
I don't think his WI fi is working now. Unless he logged off because he doesn't want to answer the bell, I think he's.
Ryan Whitney
What an amazing time to freeze. If it's a fake freeze, I, Annie's.
Biz Nasty
Muted on top of that. This is just. You're just eating. Ls left and right, buddy. You're in full biz mode right now.
Ryan Whitney
Well, biz, I believe you had a couple Ls in there as well, where people were saying, there's no way. There's no way you caught what you said you caught.
Biz Nasty
I had the least amount of Ls because I said caught at first, and then I, and then I, and then I corrected myself by saying tro. And it was a brown trout. I should have, because I, I, they call them browns there. They don't even use the word trout on the back end of it. So I remember, I remember. And then, and all of a sudden we hit record. And then I forgot what I caught. So I, I, I corrected myself. And on top of that, with all that, what state were we talking about?
Ryan Whitney
We were talking about Delaware.
Biz Nasty
I was right about the gunpowder. I was right.
Ryan Whitney
I think it was the dupont family. I've been seeing a lot family. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
And then a couple things that I was corrected on by saying that what's the smallest state in the United States, land mass wise? And it's actually Rhode Island. And I screwed up by saying Hawaii. And you said, yeah, buddy, there's eight islands. You know how many islands there are in, In Hawaii?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, I, I, I was, it was brought to my attention that apparently there's like over 130, but I'm pretty sure, but I'm pretty sure that, like, I'm not sure of anything, actually. But I, I, there's like, a couple big ones that people visit. Like, I don't know if you know, like, when you're going to visit Hawaii, I think there's like seven or eight.
Biz Nasty
That you're like, okay, going to that are, like, habitable.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Like, you know, yeah. Maybe one of them is like, Jurassic park and we don't even actually know about it, you know? But, like, you can't be going around saying, like, well, either way, you said it was the smallest state in the country.
Biz Nasty
Which is it? Is it top five small estates?
Mike Grinelli
Oh, God.
Ryan Whitney
Are we talking?
Paul Bissonnette
Can you guys hear me now?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, we got you. Well, can we talk about the cod who originally told you it?
Paul Bissonnette
I was thinking scrod, because you know how everyone in Boston says, oh, yeah, we're having scrod tonight. That is select. What is it? I might be wrong again.
Ryan Whitney
This might be wrong.
Paul Bissonnette
I think I've legit never in a. Cod aren't in rivers biz. They're in the ocean.
Biz Nasty
I know that, but I. But I was telling. When you were frozen and had a log off, there is. Is. I corrected myself by saying a trope after I said the cod, and then you followed by saying, that fish. It's the catch of the day. Which I should have known that because when we got screeched in in Newfoundland, you had to kiss the cod, but you had me. You had me in my brain wondering and questioning my entire life at that point. That cod wasn't an actual fish.
Paul Bissonnette
The sick part is, is I've eaten co, just like you wit. It's the main dish of Massachusetts. And, like, it's what everybody get every white fish. If you get in fish and chips, it's all that. But scro. I thought that's what I was thinking, which. Whatever. I'll take. Hand up accountability. Not a fisherman. Never, never claim to be one. I've fished. I've never fished in the northeast. I've only fished down in Florida. So hand up accountability. I'm sorry for that. You called lovers. But yeah, not. Not a good look. But I was thinking scrod, which is select catch received of the day.
Ryan Whitney
Okay, all right. So sort of a decent explanation there, G. What were you coming on to say? Because you're gonna try being like, yeah, I'm a great fisherman. And I knew you guys were wrong. As I was sipping on a drink in France, I was shocked when.
G
When I heard Keith say that, because I'm like, I'm pretty sure cod is a real fish, so I had to google it. Google it immediately.
Biz Nasty
But scrod.
G
Scrod is specifically not a type of fish, but a culinary term. That's why I jumped in. Young, small cod or haddock.
Paul Bissonnette
All right, well, that's. That's what I was thinking. The scrod. Remember, your mom would be like, what's for dinner tonight? She'd be like, squad.
Ryan Whitney
Actually, I. Is there anything else that we. We. We messed up? Because. Yeah, I think there was fishermen out there and people who were big into fly fishing that were just flipping out, like, you know, trying to listen while also thinking, I'm never gonna, like, put this show on again. These guys are such morons. But I'll. I'll eat that any day of the week.
Biz Nasty
Right?
Ryan Whitney
Like, if. If you're laughing with us or laughing at us, you're still laughing. Laughing while consuming our show. So win. Wins all around. I really think that's true. But, yeah, any other mea culpas I don't, I don't none pop to mind. Right off the hop, Delaware people, they reached out after they were disgusted. They were, they were just like, dude.
Biz Nasty
You get one DM from someone from Delaware because you were right.
Ryan Whitney
You knew about the gunpowder. You knew about the gunpowder. So they're like, he's actually a historian of Delaware, apparently, even though he's never been.
Paul Bissonnette
They got to put you as the third most famous person from there.
Biz Nasty
I'd move there for no state tax. I'll get an apartment, you know, from Delaware.
Ryan Whitney
Biz. Mark Eaton. Remember Mark Eaton? Am I right on this one? I believe Mark Eaton.
Paul Bissonnette
He's from Saskatchewan. He's a cod fisherman now.
Ryan Whitney
Definitely American. Wilmington, Delaware. Yes. Apparently his daughter now is a very, very highly ranked, like, skilled golfer. I played with Eaton, Pittsburgh, but great guy. Great guy.
Paul Bissonnette
I ran into Lee Stepniak and his wife. His wife's family's from there. They were in the gun. Yeah, they were in the gunpowder business as well.
Ryan Whitney
Did he, did they slap you?
Mike Grinelli
No, they.
Paul Bissonnette
Thank God they didn't hear.
Ryan Whitney
Biz, what's, what's the last week been like for you? Just really kind of relaxing, chilling, like, and any nice dinners. How was the sushi place that you went to with six?
Paul Bissonnette
Oh, yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Think biz is having Internet issues. So what's very funny?
Paul Bissonnette
You pretend like you're biz. What's very funny?
Ryan Whitney
I, I'm gonna bring up this. The last time I was in this Nantucket house, I had no Internet, and it was a big, funny punchline for you guys. And we're about eight minutes in, and both of your Internets have broken. So the fact now that I had a guy came over, this great guy, all of a sudden, he wired this thing up, I could be building. What is the. What is the things people build that, that are worth a ton of money now. No, no. God. What are people, like, mining for? Bitcoin? I got Internet in here right now that I could be mining bitcoin, basically. So now I'm not the joking laughing stock you guys are.
Paul Bissonnette
Keith, wait, how did you get that guy in Nantucket brief on him?
Ryan Whitney
I don't know. Phenomenal. I, I, I wish I had the guy's card here right now so I could shout out his company. You know, I'm sure so many people listening are looking for better Internet in the island of Nantucket, but nonetheless, I, I don't have his name. I'll make sure to get everyone, anyone who needs that. My Internet is now humming along. And biz was like yelling at us, thinking there were too many producers behind the scene. I see Fish, I see Nick, I see Granali, I see Pasha. Pasha, why don't you come? Where is Pasha? What has this guy been getting into?
Paul Bissonnette
Because the first ever guy with a girlfriend. You see his post the other day. I almost peeked. Cute.
Ryan Whitney
I saw them. I know. Did you have a collage of you guys in the mountains and like oh.
Paul Bissonnette
Dude, that made me sick.
Ryan Whitney
Were you grabbing your breast in one of the pictures up yet?
Paul Bissonnette
It was disgusting. Like it was long overdue.
Mike Grinelli
It's been like nine months now. I had to make a little hard launch.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, that was the hard launch. Okay. Oh man, that was the hard launch.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. You know, you get everyone boshes off.
Paul Bissonnette
The market, no one cares.
Ryan Whitney
No, that you know, you know there was a couple women that follow Pasha that were just crying themselves to sleep that night. He just hard launched his relationship. Yeah, a lot of broken hearts. Boy, is he in love. Pasha, are you hearing any news about the Devils or anything? Like are you concentrating on the season? Are you more like us just kind of chilling, waiting for camp to start.
Mike Grinelli
I'm just chilling. I actually had a little party last night over my parents place throughout a town. Busy boy popped by so we had a lovely day.
Ryan Whitney
Hanging by the pool.
Mike Grinelli
That was a nice time. I'm just trying to keep my mind off the Devils. You know, I get worked up enough about the devils for 10 months out of the year so I gotta kind of decompress. Devil's Twitter is losing their mind that Luke Hughes has yet to be signed. I'm not worrying about that. That'll happen in due course. So yeah, try not to think about the Devils.
Ryan Whitney
So you don't, you don't know. Way different situations because McDavid is. Will be a UFA. But I'm not worried either that he hasn't resigned in Edmonton. So you're not going to try to chirp me about that considering you're not worried about. Look, Luke Hughes corre.
Mike Grinelli
Well, completely different situations. But no, I think Connor's going to stay for three years and I think Lou's going to get locked down long term.
Ryan Whitney
I was talking to somebody this weekend who and this, this, this person. Well, so I was hearing from them something that they were told that Quinn Hughes will be on the New Jersey Devils in two years. I believe it is so just like very funny and very kind of upsetting to me because you've been saying that for years and years and years and I'm. I just don't want good things to happen to you professionally, hockey wise. I'm happy about your relationship. I'm happy about the boob grab on Instagram. What are you talking about? I thought scrolling my phone late at night that that there was a boob grab like a nice like, like a sensual boob grab in one of the pictures maybe.
Biz Nasty
I just he's in love. He's in love? Yeah. I don't know.
Ryan Whitney
He's the first guy to ever have a girlfriend.
Paul Bissonnette
Could you imagine posting that like all.
Biz Nasty
I think it's more Come on, lay.
Paul Bissonnette
Off the gu it makes me sick to my stomach.
Mike Grinelli
Shut the up.
Biz Nasty
Him happy with his girl on insta be happy.
Paul Bissonnette
I I, I hope everybody's happy but do it in the privacy of your own home, buddy.
Mike Grinelli
It's been nine months since the first post.
Ryan Whitney
You're acting like every day I'm posting.
Mike Grinelli
Like heart.
Biz Nasty
A soft launch on no.
Ryan Whitney
This was hard launch he said hard cuz he was hard rubbing her boob on in the picture.
Paul Bissonnette
Hey I I did love the picture of biz just giving you the middle finger.
Biz Nasty
Yeah he's been dummy and me in chess he's got me three games to one right now. Although I did have the quickest check made on him in like world history. I think I, I think I made like eight moves and I had him busy.
Ryan Whitney
Fisher biz. There was a rumor going around outside of a chat you're in biz that when you started playing chess the first time you went to just hop over a piece because you thought it was the the same rules as checkers with different shaped pieces.
Biz Nasty
I think that I, I think that there was a few things that I had to clarify to like okay, now we've long talked about this. I think that you said that you could for sure beat me at chess.
Ryan Whitney
You wit I've said that before. I've said a lot of things when I'm then told I said him I'm like I don't think I can back that up. I I would I I'd play you in chess anytime but I'd make one.
Paul Bissonnette
We'Re going to be together this week.
Ryan Whitney
Okay, I'll play you in chess on camera but we need to have Amazon ship us those those speed button ones because I'm not gonna yo you could be a 20 minute between move guy and I need to know Bobby Fischer versus the Russian style. Bing bing bing bing.
Mike Grinelli
You gotta play 15:10. So it's 15 minutes each and then you get 10 seconds every move you make so the games end up being, like, 20, 25.
Ryan Whitney
Wait, explain. 15 minutes each.
Mike Grinelli
15 minutes each, but then you add 10 seconds for a move. So if you take one second to make your move, you get. You add 10 seconds. You know what I mean?
Ryan Whitney
Okay, so if you're down to, like.
Mike Grinelli
30 seconds on the clock and you make a few quick moves, you could, like, get up to, like, having, like, a minute left.
Biz Nasty
Oh, okay.
Ryan Whitney
Okay.
Paul Bissonnette
Have you ever watched the Queen's Gambit?
Biz Nasty
Oh, yeah, I actually watched that show. I don't watch a lot of shows. I actually saw that one. She. She was pretty good.
Ryan Whitney
Oh. Oh, really? Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
I will work you. I will work you in chess.
Paul Bissonnette
I will.
Ryan Whitney
When am I getting my money?
Paul Bissonnette
I literally saying, hey, do you want.
Ryan Whitney
Me to Venmo you it, or do.
Mike Grinelli
You want to keep it live? You didn't even respond.
Paul Bissonnette
Cash guy. Dude, he's a cash.
Mike Grinelli
I texted you that. I said, hey. Bets over. Now, do you want the Venmo, or do you want to keep it live for playoff bets?
Ryan Whitney
No response.
Biz Nasty
Did you guys have G hop on when my computer was in the bed about talking about his trip to Italy?
Ryan Whitney
No. Let's have G. Come on. He was in the middle of ordering a edible arrangement for his girlfriend at work.
Biz Nasty
Oh, okay.
Ryan Whitney
By the way, I got my wife. I got my wife an edible arrangement once, and she. I. And she told me. She goes, if you ever do that to me again, if you ever send me one of those things again, I'll throw the divorce papers right in your face the next day. So. I didn't know women look at edible arrangements as a trash move. Yeah, I didn't know that. Well, I thought I was being posh.
Paul Bissonnette
That's the guru, Pasha. Is that a good move or not? Biz, I thought you were going to.
Mike Grinelli
Get up for Charlize.
Biz Nasty
No, you know what? You know what? What? Say that again.
Mike Grinelli
What? I thought you were gonna get it for Charlize Theron on your first date with her.
Ryan Whitney
You're going on a date with Charlize Theron?
Mike Grinelli
Don't you remember when Avery was on. He's like, yeah, she's on Raya. And then someone. I think Whit was like, what would your first date be with her? And he's like, I'll take her for a hike.
Biz Nasty
And I'd bring her to Houston's. Yeah, I bring her to my joint.
Ryan Whitney
God, this is where I got folded by an Irish traveler.
Biz Nasty
So, you know. So you know, Pasha's girl does not like seafood or. Or sushi or anything.
Ryan Whitney
Or cod or. Where is he?
Biz Nasty
Bringing her on vacation in, in a month.
Ryan Whitney
Where?
Mike Grinelli
Japan.
Paul Bissonnette
Hope she likes ramen.
Biz Nasty
They're going to the sushi capital of the world. This guy. Three weeks.
Paul Bissonnette
That's a good, that's a hard, that's a hard out launch.
Ryan Whitney
No, there's got to be big time, big time steak, Wagyu steak.
Mike Grinelli
You have, you have a month left to like get acclimated. I've been trying to take her to sushi. I said you gotta like acclimatize your palate for salmon and, and tuna and whatnot. She's allergic to shellfish, so that's kind of out of the equation. But she needs to learn how to like, like, you know, a simple salmon.
Biz Nasty
She likes brown trout. Oh, speaking. Okay, speaking of brown. Speaking of brown. Speaking of brown. There's this like thing online right now. Have you guys heard about this Dubai chocolate? And we're going to get to G's trip to Italy and France. We got to hear about that. Have you heard about this Dubai chocolate?
Ryan Whitney
No, but I'm going to tell you something quick. I love, I love when you tell me something that's like going on with the Internet because I know this is.
Paul Bissonnette
Like seven months, this is seven months.
Ryan Whitney
Late or it isn't, it's fake. And it's just like I love this.
Biz Nasty
Kind of evolving with all these conspiracy theories as to why this is a thing. So Dubai this, by the way, Jeff brought me this. So Dubai chocolate is this new chocolate where it's chocolate and pistachio in the middle. And I guess it's like not that tasty and not that unreal, but it's all of a sudden become a thing. So people are like, oh, okay, like why is this a thing? Like even in Canada people are talking about it. So Yance, you could hop in anytime to correct me, but there's a conspiracy thinking that all like the Dubai Emirates have made this a thing to distract and, and, and clog up all the images on Google of the Emirates who actually like shit on all these girls that they hired to like quote unquote pound. So all these pros, like in Dubai, these guys, they like to shit on girls. They don't. Some of them, they don't.
Ryan Whitney
Where are we getting now that's a proven thing. That's a known fact.
Biz Nasty
Yans. Yans.
Ryan Whitney
Don't say Yan.
Paul Bissonnette
I know what Dubai chocolate is. It's a, it's like a chocolate.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, like the fact that these like Dubai. Are they called the Emiratis?
Ryan Whitney
I think that's an airline.
Biz Nasty
No, no, you're thinking of Emirates.
Ryan Whitney
Okay.
Biz Nasty
Emiratis are like like people in Dubai that are like, like regular citizens. If you're not an emirate, a regular sitting is a second class citizen. These Emirates have like specialized license plates. Like they have like, you know, whatever nice supercar you can imagine. They just whip around, basically get away with whatever the they want to get away with. And like, obviously they have more money than God. They're all like oil money tycoons. So you see all these like these rockets all the time and they're posting like in Dubai. In Dubai, yeah. Dubai is a beautiful place to visit and hang out, I'm sure. But, well, I mean, I don't think, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't believe women have the same type of rights as men there.
Mike Grinelli
Right?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, I don't know on this one I, I, I'm gonna say no. I, I think that some of those laws over there aren't great.
Biz Nasty
I think that a lot of the girls, the attractive ones that are posting and like in Dubai, in Dubai tagging their location, a lot of them are like Instagram thoughts who are essentially pros. And from my, from my understanding and the Internet's understanding is a lot of these guys who have these monies, they hire these girls and they'll like take dumps on them. That's like what they're into.
Ryan Whitney
Like, oh my God, it's just so gross. I'd rather eat scrod.
Biz Nasty
So they think that the, the conspiracy theory is that all the Emirates have made Dubai chocolate, chocolate and pistachio a thing. So now when you Google it, it's not all about these guys taking shit on girls, but yet it's just the Dubai chocolate that work.
Ryan Whitney
What's interesting though is like I don't think if people were googling to look into the, the storyline of these, these chics or whatever on women that they would search by chocolate.
Paul Bissonnette
Maybe that's what I call the term for it.
Biz Nasty
That's the term.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, that's what it was called.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, they call it Dubai chocolate. Oh yeah. Did you give her the Dubai chocolate? Like they're collecting them like Pokemons. Oh, you got that Instagram? Yeah, I took a on her. It's like that's what they do, that's what they're into. And I don't know. Yance, what do you know about dubai chocolate from seven months ago, Mr. Internet?
Paul Bissonnette
Only the, only the chocolate part, like the actual eating of the chocolate. I know, I just know it was a big thing on like TikTok.
Biz Nasty
Grinnell is probably a little more up to date on. On. On. Shitting on.
Paul Bissonnette
Call Grinnell in before we delete.
Biz Nasty
Am I wrong here?
Paul Bissonnette
Four minutes.
G
You know what, Biz? I. I think you could definitely be right. I did try some Dubai chocolate gelato in Italy. It was fantastic, so I can't say that it doesn't taste.
Ryan Whitney
Is that a term for you and Alana doing something weird?
G
Just getting shit on right in the middle of Lake Como?
Ryan Whitney
She's the cuck that gets shit on, though. Like, he's the one guy wants a boat tour.
Biz Nasty
You want the boat tour today?
G
Just get me. Just douse me.
Biz Nasty
Pass me the laxative, babe. Got the skirts. Anyway, I hope I don't get shot up by a emirate. Like, I'm so. Like, I'm going to Dubai anytime soon. And I'm not trying to out them as the fact that they like to take dumps on women, but that's the Internet rumor. So, g. Let's move away from the. The shitting on ladies and talk about your trip.
G
Yeah, it's been a while. It's been a while since I've talked to you guys. I've. I've done two Europe trips since I've last spoke to you. I've gone to two weddings in Europe. One of them was featured in Vogue, which is pretty cool. It was Andrew Fetich from Loud Luxury and Madeline White, who's a, you know, a model, tick tocker influencer, millions of followers. But it was funny because it was featured in Vogue. And then the next morning, it was like a Vogue exclusive. All the pictures were released, and we're going through the Vogue website, on the magazine, like, the magazine website. And at the very bottom, last picture, it's all Andrew, Madeline, every single picture. And the last picture is just me dancing shirtless. So I wasn't expecting to be featured shirtless in Vogue, but, Jason, you've been.
Biz Nasty
Hitting the trainer up.
G
Oh, yeah, but I look awful now. I mean, the start of the Europe trips, I look good. The end of the Europe trips, I look terrible. Beautiful wedding, though. Middle of the wedding, they. They just stopped, like, immediately. They're like, all right, everyone needs to go up to the top of the castle immediately. And we're like, what? Like, what's going on? I haven't even gotten my dessert yet. So we walk up to the top of this castle in Santorini, Greece. Sun is setting. It's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen in your life. And all you hear is the rest is still unwritten. And it was Natasha Benningfield. Natasha Bedingfield came out and played a bunch of songs, so it's super.
Biz Nasty
What does she sing? She's got the feel the rain on your skin. What a jam.
Mike Grinelli
Feel it for you. Oh, yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Imagine if they were like, get up to the top of the castle and you get up there and there was some just Dubai Emirates just waiting there, squatted down.
Mike Grinelli
I would have loved it.
Biz Nasty
Now, now I'm gonna cut the cake.
Paul Bissonnette
Cut the cheese.
Ryan Whitney
This is, this is just pudding, ice cream cake.
Mike Grinelli
Disgusting.
Biz Nasty
Did she sing that song?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, yeah.
G
She's saying she sang that song. She sang a few others and it was just, it was incredible. I had like tears in my eyes. I'm like, I don't. This is just like the best moment of my life. It was amazing. And then two weeks later, Alana's best friends got married in Tuscany. So we, we went back to Europe because that's just too long to kind of do as one big trip. And so we went back to Europe, started in Nice and we actually went to this famous day club called La Garit, where it was that one that like LeBron and Jeff Bezos were at like last week. And we were at this table. It's in cans. It's pretty cool. It's. You have to take like a boat out to this island to go to it.
Mike Grinelli
It's.
G
It's the coolest place I've ever been. And we're, we're sitting at the table and all of a sudden there's these security guards that keep coming over to our table and sniffing it out. I'm like, this is weird, but these aren't like legit security guards. They're kind of like half ass security guards. So I'm like, this person's important, but not that important. And lo and behold, the waiter comes up to us. I'm trying to order more, trying to order dinner, trying to order more bottles. Find the guys. Like, I gotta be honest with you. We got Jimmy Butler, we got Paul George, we got all these NBA players. We're going to need this table.
Biz Nasty
We're going to put you in the closet.
G
Put us in the closet.
Biz Nasty
We're going to copy a couple. Fiji.
Paul Bissonnette
Was it just you and were you.
G
No, it's like there was like 15 of us on this table, so we were still spending money. But they came in. It's like, Paul George, Jimmy Butler, what do you expect?
Ryan Whitney
We got you some jet skis out back. You got to leave.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah, basically, rookie move, bring in your fiance to a wedding that's going to be featured in Vogue. You got a lot to live up to. Your own thinking that.
Biz Nasty
I'm like, who are you hiring to do your music now? Yeah, he's gonna have Elton John at his wedding.
G
I was gonna be like, I was gonna ask Biz for a little 10 fade deal or something. Maybe busy boy could come in and hook me up with business. Like a music liaison now.
Ryan Whitney
I don't know.
Biz Nasty
Yan's and Whit would walk up there and smash the guitars out of their hand. They're so.
Ryan Whitney
No, I told you a couple jams I like, I didn't know, I didn't know about you investing in them, but there's a couple jams I like.
Mike Grinelli
Dude, I've.
Biz Nasty
Buddy, I've said this time and time again. Good bunch of guys, they believe in what they do. They work hard at it. They're. They're not into the, you know, they actually like make. They record all, all together. When they're recording their album, it ain't like, okay, let's record the, the, the drum. All right, print it then. Then the guitar. They all do it together.
G
One, they're making real music. They make real.
Biz Nasty
Making real music. And if, and if, if I lose it in guys and try to support their dream. 25 grand. It's a front wipe.
Paul Bissonnette
They always say invest with your. Your heart instead of your head.
Biz Nasty
That's what I'm. And. And G probably spent that at a day club over in the south of France for sakes. What was like, what was your table bill for 15 people?
Ryan Whitney
It was around.
G
Six grand before we got booted. And then I think we went to another table where they like threw us in the back and they're kind of just giving us like, you know, beers and. But we ended up dropping another and another three grand there. So it was around.
Biz Nasty
That's not too bad. That's not too bad.
G
Not too bad at all.
Ryan Whitney
And you covered that, G?
Mike Grinelli
I.
G
Unfortunately, the way it worked was I was kind of liaising like I was the one talking to like the waiters. And I had a couple glass of wine in me, so I was feeling myself. And so, yeah, I had buckets.
Biz Nasty
I got this one, buddy.
G
I had to put the debit card, couldn't put the credit card down. Didn't have that much credit, like line of credit, so I had to throw the debit card down. Went into the old bank account, the checkings account and.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. What?
G
Not looking forward to that.
Mike Grinelli
Wow.
Paul Bissonnette
Hey, Whit, Whit, Remember on my bachelor party when we were in New York, and It was when LeBron was touring all, like, those cities, the. It was the summer. He was. Yeah, he went to Miami, and the club owner was like, hey, LeBron's over there to our table. It's like, me and all of our goon buddies, he's like, hey, LeBron's over there with some of his guys. Do you want us to bring you over there to meet him? Everyone was like, no. Why the would we want to meet LeBron?
Ryan Whitney
I don't care, but let's do their.
Biz Nasty
Shirts off right now.
Ryan Whitney
Here's 200.
Biz Nasty
Have him bring us our next bottle. Make sure he's got two sparklers, too.
Paul Bissonnette
Not one guy said, yes. It was awesome.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. The decision not to. Where LeBron was going, that we just didn't want to go meet him. No, thanks.
Biz Nasty
So you hadn't heard of the. The shitting on the women? Just to clarify about that. Like, you'd never heard that that was a thing in Dubai, G. No, no.
G
And in my Europe travels, that wasn't the talk of the town, that Emirates were on women and that they've created this psyop to. Of chocolate to. To discuss to disguise the shitting of the Emirates. So, no, no, I did not hear that, unfortunately.
Biz Nasty
All right, well, maybe that's my Maya culpa today.
G
I think you're on to something, biz. I. I'm not. I'm not naysaying it. I'm just saying I haven't heard it. I think you could be on.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, your arm might be under a bone saw soon, but you could be on to something.
Paul Bissonnette
Me and Wit had nothing to do with that conversation.
Biz Nasty
You went to a couple awesome weddings. It would be tough to top what Leon Draisaitl put on overseas. And that picture of him that came out in his mouth, I think that's just one of those pictures that's, like, that's gonna follow around forever. That's That' iconic photo, and that pretty much solidifies that they're going to win a Stanley cup in the next.
Ryan Whitney
I saw that picture, and I was just like, I now know the picture. I'm tweeting every big goal he scores the rest of his career. So, I mean, that's when you know it's a legit picture. When, like, fans of the team that you're on are like, I. I now have a meme for every big goal you score. And he scores a lot of them. I mean, we talk about playoff production and having a couple cigarettes at your wedding. I saw one Tweet somebody. It was like a random one that shows up on the algorithm. Like, I quit smoking cigarettes like 14 years ago and I've never wanted a cigarette more than seeing Leon Dreisaitle have that at his own wedding. He's a stallion too. He looked great. His wife's. She's not too tough on the eyes either. Good for him. Congrats.
Biz Nasty
Imagine being the girl who like dated him prior and just missing out on that. And then. And then you see those picks come out. Why didn't I make them make a.
Paul Bissonnette
Post at the nine month mark?
Ryan Whitney
I should have made him make a post at the nine month mark.
Biz Nasty
Oh no, I should have brought her to Japan.
Ryan Whitney
Why didn't I pull the goalie? I should have said I hate sushi.
Paul Bissonnette
But bring me to Japan and then faked it.
Ryan Whitney
But I really love it. I should have DM New York Rangers players saying evil, awful, filthy things to him. Oh, shit. Yeah, it was a pretty cool video.
Biz Nasty
I think came out too. Him and him and McDavid riding the jet Skis next to each other. Yeah, brothers for that. That pretty much solidifies that. McDavid's coming back.
Ryan Whitney
I would have said to you all the time, man.
Biz Nasty
I would have said 55. He was a Toronto Maple Leaf, but that puts it down to about 42%.
Ryan Whitney
42. Okay. You're still alive, though. That's bad.
Paul Bissonnette
That could have been. That could have been a sign that they were going to. I mean, remember Calorn used to buzz around on his Jet Ski in Tampa. That could have been a sign. That's what I heard on the deep dark Web, that he was going to go to Tampa because of that.
Ryan Whitney
That it was all about Tampa. And that's how they ride around in style with. With their old cup celebrations. Tampa's old news now, though. Tampa was the team. And now the Cats, there's. They're going to torture us again this season. What else today? Oh, biz. So leading up to this tournament, have you played around a golf. Have you touched the sticks or.
Biz Nasty
I've played two rounds since I saw you guys last. I played one in. Why? I told you I played nine holes with Orpic, but my L5s one was barking, so I was just basically putting. And you can ask him how that one went. It was just nice to catch up with him. And then one full round at the Shooting Star in Jackson and then I had one here with a couple buddies that was just a nice fun one at. What's the place called? Point Gray, I believe. So I Just like, personally, like, I'd rather like golf to go play golf. It's like a five hour day. I'd rather go hike and, and go be active and go work out with my trainer. To be honest, I get more like, I get way more benefit from that. And also after driving that whole distance, I do find like, my back's a little tight and I got to get loosened back up. I got to get my hip flexors going. So like I said, like, I. I love playing in the, in the sandbagger scrambles because there's no pressure on me. I get to show up, smoke a little weed, and you guys take what, eight of my shots every time.
Ryan Whitney
Crack some jokes.
Biz Nasty
Crack a few jokes and you're a.
Paul Bissonnette
Legend with the putter.
Biz Nasty
I'm a decent. I'm a decent putter. So, no, not much golf. Now this is more of a hockey question, and you might. Guys might not want to answer. If you could pick one guy in the NHL who would like dumping on a chick who.
Ryan Whitney
I'm not doing this.
Mike Grinelli
We're not doing.
Biz Nasty
We're not going to do that. Yan's. No.
Mike Grinelli
No, we're not doing that. No.
Biz Nasty
I was just thinking we'd bring it back more to hockey.
Ryan Whitney
But I mean, I mean that just.
Paul Bissonnette
Hey, Whit, speaking of golf, how was the Fallon Cup?
Ryan Whitney
Oh, buddy. Another amazing weekend. Lost in the second round again. Got into the championship flight again. I'm pretty sure that's nine years in a row. I shot 73 in the qualifier. Our team best ball was 69. So we were the seventh seed of 16 teams. And we won on Friday like we always do, and we lost on Saturday like we always do. Biz. All nine of those years, I've won the first round.
Paul Bissonnette
Bragging about his Internet.
Ryan Whitney
I just. I don't know. I just. We. We. We played. We played the One Armed Bandit. I've talked. And my buddy Jay Driscoll, we. I've talked about the One Armed Bandit here long ago. We qualified for the US Four ball. He putts one handed. And I told the whole story. I went through that whole round. Well, it turned out we've played a lot of golf together, a lot of money matches together, me and this lunatic. Well, we went head to head and we lost in a playoff. We lost in the first playoff hole. Just a kick in the dick. Great match. We were up. No, we were down. We were up. We were down. We were up. We tied it on 18. Lost in a playoff hole. So an amazing weekend, though. I mean, Keith knows about the Fallon Cup. It was phenomenal. So you come in with your gross qualifying score, you go out, you shoot best ball and then after you're flighted based on those scores, then the handicaps come in. So there's a championship flight and then first flight, second flight, third flight, fourth flight, fifth flight. So every fight has 16 teams. So a buddy of ours, Danny McDaniel, McLaughlin comes in. Keith, they're like one of the last people qualifying end of 30 day comes in, gives a scorecard. The pros like you're right on the cut line. He's like, for what Flight? He's like, the tournament. They were the last team in they got. Because I think like 115ish teams try to get in, only 96 get in. So there's a lot of pressure, right? Like it's a member guess. But if you play horrible, you're not playing, you're not in the tournament. So that was pretty funny. And then the other funny moment of the weekend was Gary Keith, he played with Falls. So their match on Saturday, like Gary, Gary was up till about 4am on Friday night, he was in one. And then they teed off at like 7:30. So he didn't have his, he didn't have his contacts in either. He shot 97. Maharis drove him out. His contacts on the fifth hole, I don't even think it did that much because he was still so waffled. So they have a little. They, they tied it on 18 or they got tied on 18. They're going down a playoff. But they got a wake. Somebody else in a playoff just teed off him. All of a sudden it's time to hit and Foles is like, where's Gary? Where is he? He comes rolling back to the tee just a couple minutes late. He went and took a shower. He went and took an ice cold shower after shooting 97 in between the end of regulation, the playoff hall and then went down. What'd he do? He goes, I bombed a high draw down the hill. I hit it to 8ft. I putted it right when it left my club. I walked it in, picked it up, said, thanks for coming guys. I made a birdie and we won. So I've never in my life heard about somebody showering before a playoff fall. Incredible.
Paul Bissonnette
Same clothes on.
Ryan Whitney
Yes, yes. And he didn't. And he didn't even tell falls. He didn't even tell fools. He showered to Falls about two hours later on a shower because we had my friend, my friend's wife, our, you know, our, a couple that we're friends with my Harrison D. It was her birthday, her 40th birthday. So we had the party at our house. So Foals like, hey, Gary, you want to go shower before the party? He's like, no, I already showered after the playoff. He's like, what?
Mike Grinelli
What the.
Ryan Whitney
That's what we're waiting for on the first tee. But he made a birdie and put on the same clothes. And then he wore that outfit to the party too. He had his golf shoes on at my backyard. Amazing. Amazing.
Biz Nasty
Just all over the hardwood.
Paul Bissonnette
There's this family, the. The Kelly families. They love golf and they love boozing. They're like the o' Doyles from Billy Madison. But Gary doesn't live in Boston anymore. He lives in Philly. And when he comes to Boston, he just rips it up with his brothers. There's like 39 of them. And he just. He's lucky to make the tee time. It's so good not having his contacts in. Is so on brand. He's the.
Ryan Whitney
Couldn't see shit. He said. He said, growing up, I didn't know this, that I think there's. Is it six boys? I don't know, five or six. But apparently in their basement. They used to rent out the basement to all these Irish painters. These guys would come over from Ireland and paint and they'd be. They'd just be down in the basement smoking cigarettes, listening to music. And then there was like five of them. And then the boys are upstairs. Just a classic family. Amazing people. So that was a great. It was a good weekend, dude. It just sucks. I just never ever. I lose in the quarterfinals every year. I don't even get to play Sunday.
Biz Nasty
Save it.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Or the Internet Invitational. People are very. Not anxious. That's the wrong word. Interested about this tournament. I'm like, I don't know anything. Nobody knows anything. So I know you guys don't, but I can't wait to get there. There was a guy in the tournament who's played there and said that we're going to be blown away with this big cedar lodge. Apparently it's out of the world.
Biz Nasty
Ridiculous. It doesn't look real. It looks cgi. And I'm fascinated with this. Is it Tommy Fleetwood? Oh, dude, I feel so bad for this guy. He seems like the most likable guy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
And so it happened again, right? He was in the lead all week.
Mike Grinelli
Leading.
Ryan Whitney
At least he had a two shot lead going into today and blew it. Biz. He fucking blew it again. He has 21. Or it could be 29. Either way, he is like 21 or 29 top five finishes in PGA Tour tournament.
Biz Nasty
He's got currently 11 in the last 40 years. He has 11 more top five finishes than anybody else who's never won a PGA event. So he is just. It's. It's. He's never won anything even, like, PGA event, and he's been in the lead and. Tommy Fleetwood has achieved 29 top five finishes on the PGA Tour without securing a win. This includes a recent top five finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he led after the third round. Despite his consistent performance, he has yet to claim victory on the PGA Tour. So he might even be in the top, like, 20 to 30 on the money list, right?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. I mean, he's won a couple big events on, like, whatever. What's the other tour like? Euro Tour? It's got a different name now, but he's won events over there. He's never won a PGA Tour tournament. Now, interesting. I want to ask you, to you two guys, is it like, I'm going to keep putting myself. If. If you keep putting yourself in position to win, at one point, you'll win. Is it more that, or is the scar tissue from blowing all these. More than, like, just continuing to be in there? At one point you're gonna get one, but the more you're in there then on the 15th, whole Sunday, it's like, I. I fucked this up like, 29 times before.
Biz Nasty
I think he. He seems to be such a likable guy, and that's what. Like. Like, I don't. I. I saw earlier in the week that he was in the lead because the foreplay guys were, like, mentioning it, and they've done videos with them. And then obviously today rolls around, it's like, oh, he blew another one. So I would imagine that at a certain point, he just, like, has a different approach where he's no longer nervous or no longer gets the yips in that situation. Like, he's. It's. He's gonna break through and.
Ryan Whitney
Okay, so you leave. You lead towards that way.
Mike Grinelli
All right?
Ryan Whitney
And.
Biz Nasty
And normally it's. It ends up happening a few weeks after my get. I would hammer him, and he might.
Paul Bissonnette
Go on a run, too.
Biz Nasty
I would hammer him in the next two, three tournaments personally, because.
Paul Bissonnette
Whit. Whit. I mean, you're the golf guy here. But isn't he, like, known as, like, one of, like, the purest ball strikers? Like, he, like, he's amazing. Like, he has every shot in the bag where he can do everything, and he Just falls apart sometimes.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. They call him Fairway Jesus because the long hair and how he's just a straight up ballster. Actually, I, I, I, I don't know if they do. I've, I've heard that. I've seen that maybe on Twitter. Maybe one. I saw one tweet one time, and I now say everyone calls in Fairway Jesus.
Biz Nasty
It's sick.
Paul Bissonnette
Chocolate.
Ryan Whitney
I just looked, I just looked it up. He's 34. Man. Like, that is not old by any means, considering Justin Rose won today. He's 45, but at some point, like.
Biz Nasty
So this Justin Rose, too, I was reading. Is he super clutch come playoffs? Like, has he ever lost in playoffs?
Paul Bissonnette
Rider Cup? Yeah, he lost to Spawn.
Ryan Whitney
No, he lost in a playoff to Rory in the Masters this year.
Biz Nasty
Oh, okay. Okay.
Ryan Whitney
But he's, he's won, he won the US Open. He won the Olympic gold medal. He's won the FedEx Cup. He's been a machine. I think he's played in seven Ryder Cups. He's won the money list in the European Tour. He's basically done everything. But he was a guy who, when Liv started, guys like him went to live. Older guys on the back nine.
Biz Nasty
Oh, he signed there?
Ryan Whitney
No, he didn't. But, like, a bunch of those Euro guys did. Like, like Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter and guys like that and Henrik Stenson and like, kind of like, hey, I'm, I'm, I'm in my 40s, you know, it's a young man's game. I'm gonna go over and get a hundred million dollars, and I'm just kind of sailing away in the sunset to a Dubai chocolate land. But he's like, no, I'm staying on the PGA Tour. Almost won the Masters, won a playoff event. He's an animal, an absolute, like, clutch. And what's kind of hard is that I think him and Fleetwood are pretty tight. They were paired together today, I believe. So Just I, I was kind of trying to watch that on the ferry. The service wasn't great, but, man, coming down the stretch, I. When you get a golf tournament and these and there's a couple guys and they're in a playoff, I think that's some of the best theater in sports. I know some people don't like golf, but even if you don't like golf, seeing a playoff off, putt to putt, drive to drive, I love that. It's just that I never win them when I'm in them. We had Zach Warrenski haul a shot from 100 yards against us. Remember that one Biz?
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
So what do you.
Ryan Whitney
What do you think they would have.
Biz Nasty
Thrown at Justin Rose when they were trying to recruit him? Probably 3,400 million.
Ryan Whitney
No, he wasn't like. No, that's like 100 million though. 7, 500.
Paul Bissonnette
Just because he was older. If he was 26 when it happened. Yeah. He would have got that big bag. He was right behind like tiger and those guys when coming up.
Biz Nasty
Okay, let me ask you this one. If they ask you to join live and they said, but you have to let this Instagram thought you're single. Keep in mind you're not married.
Mike Grinelli
Okay.
Biz Nasty
150 sheets. Would you let a girl on your chest? Everybody know, like, if you're a member of.
Ryan Whitney
No, no, no, no. Because like I'm driving around in like a pimped out like Range Rover, like one of seven. And then everyone's like, but that's the guy who got. That's the guy who got on by a Dubai prostitute for that Range Rover.
Biz Nasty
That's chocolate brown. That's chocolate dookie.
Ryan Whitney
Shout out. Braintree, Massachusetts Biz. They got into the Little League World Series. That's the town right next to Milton. Keith, question for you. So Milton, they. They have Milton National, Milton American, Milton America. It's Cal Ripken, Milton Nationals, Little League. So Milton national has a team that tries to get into the Little League World Series. How ridiculous is it that Milton doesn't combine for Williamsport year?
Paul Bissonnette
It's crazy. I know.
Ryan Whitney
I don't get it.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah, because like, like is east side American or. Or because I was west side. So was that national or national? I can't remember.
Ryan Whitney
That's national.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah. So national. Yeah. If we had put our teams together, we would have had. They did the one year like my brother and Foals they played, it was called acs and they mixed the two teams together and they were a wagon because they had both sides of the town.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
But they weren't allowed to do Williams sport. Oh. Oh, sweet. I think by chocolate clips. Awesome. Yeah, it looks.
Paul Bissonnette
I think it's because it might be. It might be sizes of towns maybe or something. But you got to think like some of those towns in like Chinese Taipei or Japan, like they got to be way bigger than a town like Milton.
Ryan Whitney
I. I think that those international teams put together like all star teams. I don't think it's just like one town like it is in America. Keith, I was also told at the party last night from McDonough and your sister Lauren to ask you about Ms. McCabe. Just a saint of a woman, huh? So biz. Ms. McCabe, this is. I said, who is this woman? He's kid McDonough's telling me. Yeah, me and Keith were in the Romper Room together. I'm like, what's the Romper Room? He's like, well, just like all the kids who were, like, kind of fucked up. We just. And then apparently this woman was such a Saint, and this McDonough told me she changed his life. Like, was a true inspiration to him. And then some kids were giving Ms. McDonough a hard time, and you guys stood up and, like, we're fighting people, protecting Ms. McCabe.
Paul Bissonnette
It was like everyone with a learning disability was in this class, and it was. I mean, McDonough was probably four or five years older than me. Like, he should have been college. Like, we would leave. We would leave. He'd be like, hey, Ms. McKay, me and snag on a Dunkin Donuts. And he just would go to Dunkin Donuts, smoke cigarettes and get coffee coladas. It was unbelievable. We could do whatever we wanted because we just stayed in this one class, you know, it was like, dude, it was. But then, yeah, it was like Dangerous Minds. Real, real problems that were 100 exactly like minds.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, but she wasn't Michelle wife.
Paul Bissonnette
It was like there was another one.
Biz Nasty
Where they all had detention on the weekend. It was a famous movie.
Ryan Whitney
Breakfast Club.
Mike Grinelli
Breakfast Club.
Ryan Whitney
Great movie. Great movie. You know, kids fight class.
Paul Bissonnette
Like, it was insane. But yeah, Ms. McCabe and McDonough, like, were. I would definitely say she changed his life. She helped me out too. It was great. Like, it was, you know, because there are kids in. In school like myself, who, you know, couldn't really hack it in real classes. And you need somebody to kind of look after you and help you push along and help you out with stuff. And she was an absolute saint, man. Like, just such a good lady and really cared about everybody.
Biz Nasty
Speaking of delinquents locked inside of a room or at least a house, how about this? I haven't followed it much, but there's a couple clips that went crazy.
Ryan Whitney
The.
Biz Nasty
The barstool beach house. What. What has been the craziest stuff? Yance, you typically love this type of show.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, but he's not on Twitter. Ah, dude, I was following. I was, like, updating it at night. Like, I was like, this is actually very entertaining. It had 105 million impressions on Twitter.
Biz Nasty
So instead of. Instead of releasing it after it's all been filmed, they're doing it in Real time via social media. And then there'll be a weekly rap done by Roan is my understanding. So what has been the biggest drama of the household in the first week? We, we obviously wanted to send memes there. Chiclet's memes, but he didn't make the cut. There was rumors that if Dante didn't show up that maybe memes would have gotten the nod. But I did see that Dante was kind enough to not only show up, but he was cooking them breakfast. So just being really the, the, the, the mother hen, so to speak.
Paul Bissonnette
He's 57 years old.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, but. Right. Which was pro. That's why I thought it was maybe a little bizarre to begin with. But you also need a responsible adult in there, given if you're putting some people with some pretty in, in intense personalities. Right. There's been a few clashes early on. Like what's been the, the most, the most thing that, that went viral based on, on the show.
Ryan Whitney
I believe that the Brianna chicken fry young lady called Nikki smokes a rapist. That's, that's, that's not exactly a word that you wanna. Just because he, I don't necessarily know, like, put his hand on a girl's shoulder. Now granted, this is all meek trying to follow along on Twitter as everyone else is going to on. Then apparently the clip was deleted, which Portnoy said would not happen. Nothing would be deleted. But then it was re. Put up. I don't really know the entire backstory. I do know knowing Nikki smokes the way I do that he would be electric, I'll say on this show. I mean, he said he's going to do drugs. You know, he's pretty open and honest about how much of a scumbag South Floridian type of person he is. No offense, Keith Teeth. So I, I, I don't really know that. The kidic guy, I guess he played football.
Biz Nasty
The bigger guy.
Ryan Whitney
Everywhere just belly button.
Biz Nasty
So they're, they're going out. It's kind of like the Jersey Shore thing where they're just going out, coming back to the house, going out, coming back to the house. So yeah, anytime you mix in booze in these types of situations, obviously, like it gets a little rowdy. So.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Interesting. Okay.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. And apparently, like, I think Nikki smokes had two girls back. You know, walked into the bedroom with two girls, the door shuts. The cameramen are not allowed in there.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, he's there with his ex girlfriend.
Paul Bissonnette
You, his ex girlfriend's there.
Biz Nasty
He was wearing a ride and mind.
Ryan Whitney
You, his ex girlfriend last night on the show had a Ryan Whitney shirt on. So, like, shout out Annika for just, like, knowing that, like, you know, I. I can't say that I own Nikki Smokes, considering his team has dummied my team twice in the Stanley cup finals. But on, like, a human level, like, I own him. Like, he's here and I'm like, you know, way, way, way up here. So it just.
Biz Nasty
He was.
Paul Bissonnette
He was wearing your NHL jersey and she was wearing your face. Like, you and Bri aren't wearing shirts of Nikki Smokes.
Ryan Whitney
You're exactly.
Paul Bissonnette
You're up by a million.
Ryan Whitney
Exactly. Exactly. Well, you know, Bri and I would have to have white powder all over our nose to replicate something that Nicky Smokes would make Gilly like. Like, that was. That was. That was Johnny Manziel calling out Gilly. I was waiting for that video. People probably confused. Gilly's one of the members of. What is it?
Biz Nasty
The. The million dollars worth of game.
Ryan Whitney
Million dollars worth of game. And. And Johnny Manziel all of a sudden said, I'm gonna. I'm gonna slap you if I see you again. When he was apparently talking shit about Cam Newton. And then Gilly's video in response to just. It's just classic. Just classic. You got to kind of look that one up. What else?
Biz Nasty
That's pretty much.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, pretty much it.
Biz Nasty
Yeah. I didn't really have much else to catch up on. I mean, no fish. Had a great trip out to Newfoundland, G. Obviously had a blast just making it rain. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
G, how was the sushi?
Paul Bissonnette
You never told us.
Biz Nasty
It was incredible. It was a great, great. Sit down.
Ryan Whitney
You bring some back for Pasha's girlfriend.
Biz Nasty
Pasha came with us and. And I talked to Pasha and he said I'd be doing this, like, four or five times a week on my Japan trip, but I can't now. I'm going to be eating a chicken teriyaki the whole time. A bento box off of street vendors. But that's pretty much all I got, guys. I'm really looking forward to. To getting over to Victoria and enjoying some downtime with friends over there. And one, I think that people were a little confused when we said that we were going to kind of take a step back and not talk hockey and just roll out some interviews. Obviously, we came back a little earlier because of. I'm drawing a blank here. Tarnaski coming on, but we've been dropping some bangers. I mean, two pods ago, we had Henrik Lundquist, Marco Sturm, the new coach of the Boston Bruins last pod. I think people are calling Zen and canopka top 10.
Ryan Whitney
I knew it 10 minutes into it. Best. I want to have Konopka on once a month. He's that good. He's that. And there's so much more to that guy than just the interview we had. But he could tell a story with the best of them.
Biz Nasty
And he's got Dennis Bondi hands. When he's putting his hands up, he's got his fingers going in every which direction.
Ryan Whitney
Yes, yes, yes. Konopka people love. Yeah, I totally forgot about the Brophy story. When they're announcing before the anthem how the longtime season ticket holder had passed away. And he's like, we're killing our fans for fuck sake. So another thing about maybe getting on like one episode, try to get like 10 guys on 10 minutes each that played for bro feet. That would also be amazing. But Canopic was awesome. And today we have Pierre Turjon. Keith set this one up. I think Keith had been skating with him at a couple different men's league skates and this guy came over. Dude, what a machine. What? He looks phenomenal, dude. And you'll see when the interview drops. But he's a great guy, an awesome story. His career was legendary. I mean, his brother was a hell of a player. He turned into a Hall of Famer. So I hope everyone enjoys Pierre Turgeon. And I can't wait to see you boys.
Paul Bissonnette
Thing from Turge is like, you know, he's in the hall of Fame. He's done everything, like how grateful he was of the game and like what it gave him and the guys that he met, like, he just, you could tell even now he's whatever, 55 years old, however old he is. And just, just like the, the gratefulness he had of the NHL and the game and just everything was so cool to me.
Ryan Whitney
He loves hockey.
Biz Nasty
The one, the one word leaving that interview, I would have said gratitude. You could just tell that he embraced every minute and is just so grateful what hockey provided his life. And yeah, it was, I mean guys hall of Famer. So I. You guys will be able to listen to him. I would definitely go back listen to Hank because we hadn't had Hank on also since he'd had the heart issue, right? So we talked about his, his career and at the time when we originally interviewed him, we were on the west coast wagon tour and he was an all star that year. So that's how long ago that was one of our first things we ever did. We were with Teddy Purcell. We were with Bugsy Malone. I remember we interviewed Dry Seidel, my brother. We had Giroux McDavid. I mean, who. We had so many guys on that.
Paul Bissonnette
Me and my brother.
Biz Nasty
Yes, that's right.
Paul Bissonnette
Remember, Remember that night my. We went out that night. My brother was. He was working late. He was working the overnight shifts at that time. And he fell asleep in the club. And I have a picture. It's like me, Hank, you guys, like behind my brother. He's dead asleep in the club.
Ryan Whitney
It was a comfy couch at that place. San Jose too.
Biz Nasty
It was. So go check those interviews out if you guys have missed them and catch up and enjoy pure turg on.

Mike Grinelli
Thanks for having me. Appreciate that.
Ryan Whitney
This is all Yan's. Because about, I don't know, maybe last year. Earlier this year, he's like, hey, I. I've been skating once in a while. Pierre Terjean's out there. He's still silky. I said, you think he'd come on the show? He goes, I'll. I'll ask him. So he put this all together.
Paul Bissonnette
Well, I thought he was still going to be playing in the league, though. The first day I went out to this men's league skate, I'm like, terjon could still play in the NHL. Like, it was unbelievable. And it's.
Mike Grinelli
It's so much fun, though.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Have you ever stopped skating since you retired?
Mike Grinelli
For a couple years. It took me a couple years and then I got back into it and. And I was missing it, you know?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
And I love. I try to go twice a week on the ice, and if you don't go as much as if you go once or once in a while, it's hard to. Your head says something, but your hands and your feet are not connecting.
Ryan Whitney
Well, that happened to me while I was still playing.
Biz Nasty
Are you. You doing anything else other than just playing hockey to stay in shape? You look like you're still.
Mike Grinelli
I do. I mean, I go to the gym a couple times a week. It's. It's part of my life. I still. I. Yeah. I'm not gonna quit it doing it. I just love the feeling of it.
Ryan Whitney
And.
Mike Grinelli
And I get on the ice twice a week, so I enjoyed that part. And, yeah, I'm still working out.
Biz Nasty
I mean, I would imagine you ran a pretty tight ship if you can play that long. I mean, that has to be kind of part of your identity, right? Your work ethic.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, it's. It's part of. You just. There's a. It's passion, you know, getting on the ice is just. You get in the. Only. I said that earlier. You get in your own little bubble and you're in a place where there's nothing matters for an hour and a half. It's like doing meditation. It's like in a great place. I just love being on the ice, so I'M still able to do it. The only thing I said, like, you get up the next morning, my God, tough.
Paul Bissonnette
Even the sitting in the locker room and obviously having you there, just chat and hockey, it's so fun. And then you got guys that are on their lunch break for work and then go back. It's awesome. It's such a fun.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, it's fun. Oh, yeah. Locker room is one of the things we miss, obviously. But I did miss the ice a lot, so it's been getting back on the ice to its own.
Ryan Whitney
Do you still watch a ton of hockey?
Mike Grinelli
Not as much, no. You know, I watch here and there, and once in a while, when it gets to be the playoff, then I'll watch a little more. But yeah, yeah, I watch here and there.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. It's interesting to see, like, the game you came in and played and, like, how much more you might even fit in better in now's game. Like, it's crazy. Like, as a skilled player like you, you know, you came in when there was clutch and there was hold and there was fight. It was just. It was probably a tougher game when you came into the league than now.
Mike Grinelli
It's funny because when you look at the number, the 90s, you have the trap that came in, which is the mayor that brought the trap. Yeah. And next thing you know is you imagine red line is there. You could put your sticks around someone's weights and just key. And on top of it, the neutral zone is jam. You can't go anywhere. And then it made some great adjustment. Now you can't put your sticks around someone's waist. They took away the red line. You could bypass the trap. You could buy. So you could. You could. It's more strategy. There's a lot more strategy now. But you got to be able to skate. I mean, it's just. It's fun to watch. I think the NHL has done a great job to the game. I love watching it when I watch it, but it is different. The 90s up to now, obviously, it's. It's. There's a big, big improvement.
Paul Bissonnette
I think I remember during COVID they would be running all the old games and, you know, you're trying to stay in shape. I'd be on the bike watching. And the thing that stuck out most to me was the hockey IQ back then, because all the hooking and holding, but the little passes you guys made, and you still do it to this day, like, like little baby sauce passes to a guy in, like, where he can only get it, like, because The. The iq, If a guy's holding you and hooking you, you have to be one step ahead, right?
Mike Grinelli
Well, I think even. Even today. And then too. But you have guys that could be very good today with skill. They could be very good in the short area. But you see the difference with Crosby or, you know, all these guys that could see why. They could see the guys coming late. They could see. I mean, so you could be very good, tight, but all of a sudden you got to be able to just see what's happening around it and, and you can see the big, the skill players. They're able to find those little paths and find the light leg guy coming in. And it's fun to watch that on.
Biz Nasty
Last year you were inducted into the hall of Fame. I just like, was that a good time to be able to kind of reflect on your entire career and look back at what you were. You were able to accomplish? I mean, so many amazing things. The points close to 1300 games over 1300 points. It's just like, it's, I think five all star games as well.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I was just blessed to be hockey, man. Like, I love playing hockey every time I get on that ice. It's fun. And being a part of. Of the hall of Fame and you look at all the names, it's incredible. And it makes you look back at your. At your story and your. Your life, what you. When you. When you're coming from and. And the people that help you to get there, and you feel very, very, you know, blessed just to be a part of just that, that, that. That process to get there and, and being there. Last year was an incredible feeling and.
Ryan Whitney
It was emotional, obviously, like doing your speech, like you're. Yeah. Like, I guess you're reflecting and all of a sudden you're thinking of when you're 8, when you're 14, like, everything kind of comes back to you thinking of it all.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I mean, you. It makes you think the coach should. Players you played with and, and your story and how to get there in the struggle. There's not. Nothing is perfect, obviously. There's up and down, down and. But. But it makes you very grateful for what. What you, what you go through and the achievement of it. That it's. It's incredible. I mean, it's just. It's very blessed.
Biz Nasty
Who was your biggest influence from a younger age? Yeah, I'm sure you were watching it on television and you're from Noranda.
Ryan Whitney
Good job.
Biz Nasty
Canadian side or not a Canadian side, but a French side and an English side.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
And we were just talking to Dale Talon, he was from the English side. We didn't realize that you guys were from the same place.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, so we're, we're going around that seven hours north of Montreal, about six, seven hours from Toronto. You know, we had winter for then it changed now, but we had winter for, you know, seven, eight months or so. And, and it was cool. So we're able to go outside and play hockey and just, you know, and, and have fun and, and. But you, you're right, there's the, you know, we had the English side and we had the French. French guys. And, and we just were used to bass, you know, and it used to be so competitive. Obviously you got to be. And. And you know, we have a lot of guys that came from winner and too. So you look back at Reginald, you look back at, at. Yeah, Dave Keon that comes in. Yeah, yeah, let Michelle Perrier comes in. It's just so, it's kind of cool to see the people that help all these guys to go through and make, you know, have a career. You know, we have had I think 15 of these guys. But my brother was probably the biggest influence in my career. No doubt about that. He was the one that was looking, I was looking up to. He's four and a half years older than me.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, you idolized him.
Mike Grinelli
Oh my God. I looked at him and he used to put me in net when I was young. Just laser at me, you know, hey kids, I gotta practice my shot. Go put. Yeah, put your mask on. Go. I'm gonna laser some bucks. So he did, you know, then at one point. Okay, that's enough having a bruise around me. So it, yeah, so. But yeah, I used to look up to him and, and he, he, I sure had a huge, huge influence in my career.
Biz Nasty
Throughout the minor hockey, was there a battle between the French speaking kids and the English speaking kids?
Paul Bissonnette
Like Bloods and Crips.
Biz Nasty
No way was that that bad.
Mike Grinelli
It was, I mean, used to f. Yeah, I mean it was, it was always the school or it could be the hockey, the sports, any sport.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, it's pretty cool to have though, like. Yeah, that rivalry built in with, with.
Biz Nasty
The culture gangs in New York.
Paul Bissonnette
You know, it's a blue collar city, right?
Mike Grinelli
It is, yeah. And then we had, we had Ontario, which was 20 minutes to half hour from home too. So we used to go play tournament. And then it got to be even worse. Like it was. Yeah, so it was very. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
So your brother, he went second overall in 83. You went first overall in your draft. The only two brothers to ever go one and two. Yeah, that's wild.
Paul Bissonnette
Now I feel like it doesn't get talked about as much as, like the Hughes.
Ryan Whitney
I know it's crazy.
Mike Grinelli
It's crazy when you think about it.
Ryan Whitney
And then you, I imag. So when he gets picked and he's right in the NHL, in Hartford, like you're, you're trying. Were you able to go to games? I guess you're playing your own hockey and you're 14.
Mike Grinelli
You know, I was 14 years old.
Ryan Whitney
He's hearing his stories and stuff.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I, I, I did look up and, you know, one story that pops up is, is when I was, I was 14 the first year he came back, he comes back driving with a Porsche 944 Red. I'm thinking, whoa, you play hockey and you could get these things. I'm thinking, I want one of these too. So obviously it's, I know it's material, I know it's car. But it actually drove me as I didn't realize. I just love the game, playing hockey. I didn't know about that.
Ryan Whitney
I could, you don't even think of.
Mike Grinelli
That about money or think about, about having some, you know, things, but I'm like, I want that. So the first year I did, when I got to the NHL, I bought a 944 White Porsche.
Biz Nasty
No, I did.
Ryan Whitney
Because it had been in your mind for five years.
Biz Nasty
That's saying when you roll up in one of those. Yeah, well, you know what?
Mike Grinelli
It took me a year. My second year, I bought the Porsche. But yeah, it looks like, but one guy that really wasn't okay with this is Pierre Lacroix, was my agent and he was kind of a dad to me. So he flew back to Buffalo and he tells me, you can't buy that. I said, yeah, I want to buy it. He goes, you can't buy that. What are you going to want after this? He was kind of right too. He was trying to tell me, where.
Ryan Whitney
Are you going from there?
Mike Grinelli
Where are you going from there? So, so I'm thinking, no, I'm getting a Porsche, I'll sell it a couple months. I don't care. I'm getting it. So he, when he, when Pua can't go over to you and make you change your. He doesn't like it. You know, he was very com, you know, very great negotiate. So anyway, I bought the car and, you know, a year after I sold it and I bought a Ford Explorer.
Ryan Whitney
So this fits in Buffalo exactly a little better.
Biz Nasty
I was flying everywhere. I was sliding on the tires.
Mike Grinelli
I needed it, but I didn't do it.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Were you. Were you, like, kind of a phenom of a younger kid, too? Like, were you really high picked in the Quebec League? However they did it then, like, so there was never really, like, you weren't much of a late bloomer. It was kind of like you were always the guy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. So I was 14. I was playing with 16, 17, and 18 years old. Yeah. But at 14, I was 6 foot. And at 12, I was 5. 11. Like, 11. So I was a big kid right away. You know, we went to Little League, World Series. I don't know if you knew, but.
Ryan Whitney
I was gonna bring that up.
Mike Grinelli
So I went, literally, World Series. And I'm bigger than the coach. I'm bigger than everyone. I'm the guy that's standing over everyone's head like, it's crazy. At 5, 11, 11 years old.
Ryan Whitney
Wow.
Mike Grinelli
Right now I'm the same.
Ryan Whitney
No, it didn't change. Like, this guy's gonna be six, five.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, no kidding.
Mike Grinelli
That's what.
Paul Bissonnette
I like baseball as much as you liked hockey?
Mike Grinelli
Oh, no. Hockey is number one for sure. Yeah, hockey. I mean, baseball was a great experience. And when you think about us winning from wine, it wasn't. It was two cities. We won all over Canada to get to Little League walls here in Pilsim.
Ryan Whitney
Who does?
Mike Grinelli
You know, it's. It's crazy. And then Stefan Matteo was on the team, too, so me and him, two.
Ryan Whitney
NHL.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Biz Nasty
And we.
Mike Grinelli
We alternate. Me and Stefan all the time pitching. So we made it. That. That's how we made it. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Holy.
Mike Grinelli
Crazy.
Biz Nasty
Crazy.
Mike Grinelli
And then Stefan is. Funny thing is, me and Stefan, his mom and my mom were pregnant at the hospital at game. We're five days different. Holy.
Paul Bissonnette
Did they know each other?
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
No. Your mom and his. Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
Well, they got to know each other at the hospital.
Paul Bissonnette
Oh, my God.
Mike Grinelli
And all of a sudden, now we're like. We grew up and we played hockey together, we played baseball. We played in the NHL. We played in the same team in St. Louis. He was my roommate. Think about that.
Biz Nasty
Holy cow.
Ryan Whitney
Weird.
Biz Nasty
You know, did any other kids from that Little League World Series team that you guys. Did they advance to go play college like any. Any MLB guys?
Mike Grinelli
Not. No, not a lot. Lot of guys, but they were good, good players, obviously. But we had. The year before, we had Eric Desjarde, Andre. Andre Rascoe, the goalies. So these guys were there the year before, but we just went to. We went to the Canadian, and we didn't pass the Canadian to go all the way, but. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Did you idolize the Habs, or was it like. Was that your team?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I did.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
Sure.
Ryan Whitney
It's not as. Maybe as much as growing up in Montreal.
Mike Grinelli
Like, oh, no, you. You watch. And we were watching the games and stuff, obviously, was just. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So. And then being part. One day, part of it, it's.
Ryan Whitney
It's captain, you know, that's wild. Well, take us through the draft a little bit because obviously, like, were you told prior Buffalo was going to select you? Pierre Lacroix was your agent then and you knew growing in, or were you. Was there any doubt that you.
Mike Grinelli
They told me the night before.
Ryan Whitney
Okay. That I was going.
Mike Grinelli
They were. They were going to draft me. They told me. So I knew. I knew before. I didn't know until then. So.
Biz Nasty
So were you. Were you interviewing with the other team still? Just at the chance, but it wasn't a thing, man.
Mike Grinelli
You know? No, you kind of. Dude, you just got to, you know.
Ryan Whitney
There was no combine.
Mike Grinelli
I couldn't speak anyways. I couldn't say a word in English. That was.
Ryan Whitney
No.
Mike Grinelli
How you doing? Yeah, seriously, it was.
Ryan Whitney
So did you play that up in Buffalo? A little bit. Even when it got better, like, no, no.
Mike Grinelli
Well, I didn't. In my first year, I was like, yeah, you know, and then I live with a Billish family. That's all I knew. Porsche, thank you very much. So I knew something. So all the interview I had, the draft, they all came and says, thank you very much. That's all I knew. So. So. And he goes, how you doing? Thank you very much. You know, that's. Yeah, Yeah. I couldn't say anything else. But you know what? It was. It was a learning curve. I live with a bit of family my first year, and I was calling Jacques Clutz. He was a good friend of mine today still. And Jacques, I said, how do you say, I'm hungry? How do you say, you know? So I was trying to get, you know, communicate with the family I was in and so I could move forward. But I did, you know, when you're in the place, you're forced to do it. And it took me a year, two years to feel more comfortable. What about the practice and the coaching?
Ryan Whitney
Something I know.
Mike Grinelli
I don't know. You go behind the line, hopefully when it gets to be your turn, you know what's going on.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Just don't go first.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. I went the last. All the time. If I didn't know I went back behind the line again.
Biz Nasty
So who were the guys that you were able to lean on in those first couple years?
Mike Grinelli
Jacques Cloutier was your guy? Yeah, yeah. He was the guy that I talked to all the time. Still today he lives in Denver. So we go back in Denver a lot. All my kids are there. So we go back and I. I still visit with him.
Ryan Whitney
It's been such a tough run for the Sabers, but we always talk on the show about how. How crazy it is of a hockey market. Like, they love hockey. And I know you made the playoffs all years you were there. Did you sense even then how much they loved it or had it? Yeah. Okay.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah. Good sport time.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
I mean, the Bills were there in four years in a row. We were there during that time. So the. No, yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Oh, the. Jim. Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah. Jim Kelly.
Ryan Whitney
Thurman. What was it? Thurman.
Mike Grinelli
Thomas.
Paul Bissonnette
Thomas.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Thomas.
Mike Grinelli
It was unbelievable. So we were there there, and they got. These guys were coming in. We were going to see the game. So we. We mixed. It was incredible. Yeah. I mean, it's just a sport. The town is incredible for. For.
Ryan Whitney
They love drinking and they love sports. That's pretty much how it goes.
Paul Bissonnette
Just the town, like, it's.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
They. They deserve. They. They need to figure it out at some point.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
It's such a good market for hockey and they need to be good.
Ryan Whitney
I'm looking at your. At your stats, like, rookie year. I mean, good year. 42 points. Pretty. Pretty good. But then it just. Something clicked that summer, huh? Maybe getting used to the league.
Mike Grinelli
You know, I gotta tell you, so you get drafted and I'm thinking, you know, you go to. I went to Buffalo and, And. And Buffalo is a smaller ice and. And every time I had the puck was gone. Like, what. What's going on? So the first three months. So two months, I felt like, guys are stronger, the game is quicker. It's a big step, as we know. We all know, Junior to the NHL, it's humongous.
Ryan Whitney
No. No time and space.
Mike Grinelli
No. You know, everything was. So. After that, I started. After a couple months, I felt okay. I belong here. I'm okay now. That's. Everything's going to be fine. And then, you know, you're playing a lot more confidence and. And you feel like you. You belong in that league. So it was. It took me, I'm gonna say, the first couple years, I. You're young, you're coming in, you learn. And I think it's more. You depend on your skill and you realize that it's not enough, and you gotta start battling around the corners. You gotta. You got. The puck is yours. You gotta have the mindset. You gotta go and get that puck, you know? And I learned that when I went to play for the Yonders for Al Arbor. Al Arbor had a couple meetings with him, and he got in my mind in a way that could just made me go through a brick wall if I needed. Really? Yeah.
Biz Nasty
This guy was like, he. He untapped your potential more than. Than what could have happened in Buffalo.
Mike Grinelli
It probably would have happened because you can't just depend on your skill. There's, you know, there's. There's battles, there's protecting the. There's. There's. This is all other areas of the games that creates scoring chance. I'm saying winning the battles and behind.
Ryan Whitney
Them that you don't need skill for. Almost.
Mike Grinelli
No, you. It's all protecting. It's all tree. And then the skill comes. You have a little. Those little pass on the side or, you know, this. Like, I love Crosby. That's what he does. And I love the way he plays. And I. I'm not Crosby, but I'm saying I played that way a little bit. Bit. If later on in my career, I.
Ryan Whitney
Felt like where he, like, almost is considered like this superstar. Superstar grinder, almost people.
Mike Grinelli
I love it.
Ryan Whitney
Like, it's like, yeah, you're doing things. You see third and fourth line guys do, and then you have the skill, once the space comes, to just explode.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. And. And you just. You. You drop your shoulder and you're battling. Why release? Just an example. Why release? When the puck comes up, you got to stay in it. Your shoulder down, you're attacking it.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
It's a mindset after that.
Ryan Whitney
I think that if Twitter was around in 1992 or 91, and LaFontaine's traded for Terjon, it might have exploded. Like, did you know it was coming? Like, what an amazing big deal that was at the time in the NHL.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. I'm good friend with Patty today. Good guy. So. But, you know. Yeah, I mean, I didn't expect it, you know, then everyone was staying at the same team for a lot of you years.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
And when Gretzky got, you know, Wayne got traded, they're like, if Wayne could get traded, one could get traded. This, you know, so. So.
Ryan Whitney
So the league thought that other guys around the league were like, oh, of Gretzky's traded now.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, anyone could have us. And it did happen, you know, so. But it was a Great trade. It worked out well. We had Yui Krup, Dave McWain, Benohoag, and then they had Randy Wood and Patty going to Buffalo. So we had, you know, it changed the team for the elders. It turned out. Turn out very well for Buffalo. And then on the same day, we had Adam Creighton and Steve Thomas. That came from Chicago. Yeah. So we had seven. Seven. Six. Seven guys. Having six guys coming in one trade, two trade. I mean, same day.
Ryan Whitney
And that was all Al Arbor.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
He kind of saw something all Arbor.
Mike Grinelli
And it was manager Tori. Bill Toy.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, yeah. He was a bow tie, right?
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah. Such a good guy. You said Milbert, No.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
He'S. Oh, really Smart. Smart man.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Knew the game. Oh, Restless. God rest his soul. Good man.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
I was gonna ask you, like, outside of your brother, who do you think the most influential people on your. On your, like, your skill and your career in that regard? Like, just like helping you with on ice stuff. Was there like maybe a. A skill coach back home or anyone in particular that really helped you kind of achieve that next level?
Mike Grinelli
I think Al Arbor was the guy. Yeah. But when it was guy, like when I played with Dale Inerchuck, you know, it was amazing how good he was to protect the puck. You know, he didn't have much room to put a puck in the net. You know, he wasn't a great skater, but all of a sudden he's got six, 700 goals. Like, it's crazy, you know? I mean. Yeah, and it's amazing, but what a hockey player. He could pass the puck like crazy, but he. It was all about protecting. He had his big butt off out.
Ryan Whitney
And he was just in front of the net. Right.
Mike Grinelli
Unbelievable. Unbelievable. And you didn't need much. You just gave him that puck. Somewhere around his. His blade, he found it like he was in that. So he was one of the guys I look up to at a young age. And then I played with Brett and I played with, you know, many guys that I played with. It was incredible. So. But I'm gonna say Al Arbor was. One day calls me. This is where. Where it happened for me with. With Al. He calls me in his office and he goes, he goes, how many games? He goes, he goes, how many games in a year? 82. Okay, how many games home? Where you going with this? You know, 41. And then how many period? Okay, how many? So how many shift do you have in one period? I go, six, seven.
Ryan Whitney
That's up to you.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, exactly. Six, seven. He goes, he goes, how Many minutes. Do you. How many minutes you. You know, how many seconds you. Your shift. It's a 45 second. He goes. I want you to find those 45 seconds. And every second you stay in the now and you battle as hard as you can to get that puck. And that's all it matters. Nothing matters. When you come back on that bench, it's done, it's gone. It's your next 45 seconds. Don't look any further than that. But stay in a moment. And I want you to get that puck and I want you to be here. I don't care how big the guy is in front of you. I'm gonna get that black thing. It's mine. So that's how I felt. So I came out.
Ryan Whitney
Wow.
Mike Grinelli
I came out with him. That. That brought me to another place with. I fell a lot.
Ryan Whitney
Do you think mentally prior to that you might have like thought in the future. Thought too far in advance. Like maybe he sensed that like to get you more in the moment was a big thing.
Mike Grinelli
Moment just. Yeah. So. But that's what hockey's all, you know, whatever the battle is. The battle it you're there. Yeah, I want it. That's all.
Ryan Whitney
Who's going to win that battle?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. That's what it comes down to and that's that battle creates a pass, creates a scoring chance.
Biz Nasty
What was he saying it because maybe you were known to take shifts off Prior.
Mike Grinelli
Like when I was more on the talent side. So you could go around and stay outside and be dependent on your skill. But I think it makes you a complete player. More a better player. The details of the game.
Ryan Whitney
That's what brings to become truly great. He's talking.
Mike Grinelli
Get in there. Just battle. If you need to go to the gym, get just bad. Just work out, make sure you're strong. Get in there. If it's at your. If it's. You know, they're getting big. That's who I played with most of the time against all the time. So I play with big guys and you got to stay on it, you know.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. You had the. You had the D that were just crushing people.
Mike Grinelli
Oh yeah. I mean these means.
Paul Bissonnette
I mean they cross checks Stevens. Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Adam Foot.
Mike Grinelli
Because these guys. Yeah. So my pads around me was my back. I had of pads like that thick, that wide. I made sure that I could take those watch.
Ryan Whitney
You know.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
The trainers. Hey, can you put me something in the back make sure I could. I could just stay in with the battle there. Yeah. So yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
So even like for how skill obviously hall of Fame, how skilled you are. Like when I think of your get, like you always had the puck down low and like you said, getting, getting crosshair behind the net like Gretzky, almost like that was your office.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, that's.
Paul Bissonnette
Those are the, The. Yeah, those are the tough areas to be in is. I mean, you're not a huge guy. Like going against those guys. That must have been night in night.
Mike Grinelli
It's hard. But I will say the two guys that I had a hard time with, it's not the guy that's going to be physical. It's the guy that took away your time and space to create. Lidstrom, Lindstrom, heart like Rayborg, tough. These guys, they were. You know, usually as a player, you go places before you get the puck. You have time and space to create. But these guys got close enough to you that just a little poke, that's all you needed. And then you like it just bounce and then you have lose control. But they took away your time and space to create.
Ryan Whitney
They read the play.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah, they were so good. And then you go two on one. You try to flip it over, you go to the other side. Clip. Yeah. Just like, you're like, okay, people. Good. They were tough.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
You know, these are guys I. It was hard to play again, these two guys were the hardest player I have to play against, in my opinion. For me.
Paul Bissonnette
Were you like when your time in the Islanders, were you playing where with, you know, certain guys the entire, like the majority of the time, I feel like that's different now. Like, there's so much line switching. Like back then you're playing with a couple guys.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
You're staying with them.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
That must have been nice to get that.
Mike Grinelli
To get the same stability. Steve Thomas, Derek King. And we were. We played together four years. Yeah, that's what it was. You know, I love playing in Stump. He could fly at speeds and he hit anything. He was a pest. He wasn't a big guy, but. But he was just. Yeah, he could hit anything. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Were you surprised when you ended up getting moved over to the Islanders?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I was. Yeah, I was surprised. It's just because I wasn't expecting. When I got it was Jeremy and calling me in. In the, in the. In the room and, and, and. And in. In Buffalo and just got traded. He goes, you traded? And Patty Lance coming in. I said, okay. So I was just. But it's fun again. The first one is always the hardest one. And then after that you're like, okay. And then I got tried to trade it in. In Montreal. All but that trade was. It was. It was. I was kind of happy too, you know, I'm going back to Montreal to play for the Canadian. Crazy, you know. And then they had.
Biz Nasty
That didn't intimidate you at all, going home?
Mike Grinelli
No.
Biz Nasty
Did they tell you when that was going to go down? That you were going to end up being the captain?
Mike Grinelli
So I'm going to rewind this. So maybe I shouldn't say, but I'll say it. Patrick what calls me two days before. So you get in traded, you're coming to Montreal. I said, what? He said, no. So I'm going to the rink and we have a game that night and we have in. In the morning. I'm. I'm waiting and I'm thinking someone's.
Ryan Whitney
When's gonna do anything to tell me?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. So. So in the afternoon comes around and then I go back and I call him. I said, okay, that's. It's not gonna happen. He goes, yeah, you watch. So that night, it was a Pierre Tourjean night. So that's why they didn't make the trade. But the next day I got trade traded. That's how I get traded. But yeah, Patty calls me and goes, ah, I think we're working on this. You can't do that. But he did.
Ryan Whitney
Imagine now, now they got. They sit out guys weeks in advance if they're going to get traded.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
They were willing to like if you somehow got injured that game, that whole thing was done.
Mike Grinelli
That's right.
Ryan Whitney
That's crazy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
I gotta ask about one of your first assistant coaches, John Tortorella in Buffalo. What was he like then?
Mike Grinelli
I couldn't understand anything.
Biz Nasty
So it was fun.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
But not only that.
Ryan Whitney
Could speak English.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
So.
Mike Grinelli
But he was great as an assistant, you know, I didn't, you know.
Ryan Whitney
And different.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I think it was different. And then when you got to be coach, obviously I'm here, so I don't, you know, I don't know. But he's doing. He's still there.
Paul Bissonnette
Still doing.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, he's still doing it.
Biz Nasty
Were you the most. You play with Brett hall, correct?
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Were you the most intimidated by playing with him, like just because of his cockiness?
Mike Grinelli
We said we. We got a couple argument and then it was fine. He.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, right off the hop.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, we. Yeah, didn't took long. Yeah. So. But we, we. You know, Brett is. Yeah, I. I needed to get used to him, obviously. But he's. He a bad pass. He could make it a good pass. I mean, he's so good. His, his range is, is just an amazing. The way he gets the puck and the way he released the puck. But he goes to me, looks at my sticks a couple days after him. There he goes. Your sticks sucks. I said, okay. I said, it's too stiff. You're gonna need a stiff whip here. So, okay, he goes, let's see. After practice I'll show you how to do a one Timer. And I'm 27 at that point. I'm thinking, okay, I'm think I'm, you.
Ryan Whitney
Know, you had 100 point season.
Mike Grinelli
So I'm thinking, you know, sure, Brett. You know what? I went back home and I told my wife, I said, I don't do something today. Incredible. His upper body, like his hands the way he, he, he is. He's righty, but his upper hands away from his body. If the puck moves a little bit, he move his hand forward and then he released the puck. Instead of having your hands tight too, I'm lefty. If you have your hands too tight to your body, you jam yourself.
Ryan Whitney
That's a new thing that all these skills that was.
Mike Grinelli
He was ahead, you know, I mean, his hand is away. And then if the puck moves, you know, forward, then you're able to move your hands forward and then release. And on top of it, if the puck is ahead the of of your front foot, you're able to push back your hands forward and then you release. So your target is not. It's hard to do. One timer is not. It's not easy. It's hard. You have maybe eight inches. Well, with that, he was able just to release at any places around his feet. He was able to get it. It was incredible the way he did. So I learned something. I'm like, okay, that's pretty cool. When I was 27 years old, like, like legit.
Biz Nasty
That day you changed the. The.
Mike Grinelli
I worked on it, you know, after that, after practice, I used to work on it all the time. Time away from my body, just release it, you know. And then I started changing my stick to. At one point, it was too stiff.
Biz Nasty
Was it, was it?
Mike Grinelli
He was right. I just didn't know any better.
Paul Bissonnette
You know, nowadays everyone uses a whippy stick. In fact, even when we started, everyone was 100, 110. If you had under 100, you were. Guys looked at you like you.
Mike Grinelli
That's right.
Paul Bissonnette
A little kid.
Biz Nasty
Well, I think that. Didn't Brett hall have like a 60?
Ryan Whitney
Oh, it was like crazy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, he had a 100 for the power play too. Yeah, yeah. 70 and 75, I think.
Biz Nasty
I think something like this, that's still. That was a wet noodle.
Mike Grinelli
He's the best one timer ever. I played with crazy.
Biz Nasty
Was it, Was it. Was it the first time you'd maybe ever seen a guy interact the way that he did with head coaches? Because, like, I feel like you, like nobody could give him. And even when like Keenan did.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I saw that. So when I get to St. Louis, I mean, Keenan trades for me. I'm thinking, why does he want me? Like he wants me. And so I get there and I play like freaking 25 minutes, 24 minutes. Too much, too many minutes. And, and, and so the second game or so, and then all of a sudden I see there's a. There's a TV break on the ice. And then Brett looks at, you know, and the. The F word are going back and forth.
Ryan Whitney
I'm like, whoa, I never seen this before.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Who talks like this to coach.
Mike Grinelli
Coach back.
Biz Nasty
You know, it's unbelievable. Al Arbor would have str.
Mike Grinelli
You wouldn't be gone. You know, I'm thinking, whoa, this is a little different. And so, yeah, that started that way. And then I played with Brett and then at one point, Brett, you know, I came back and I looked at him, I said, brad, I don't need to play with you. I'm telling you, I don't need to play with you. And then he goes, okay. And after that, he changed. Like, we argue for a little bit and then it was. I was done.
Biz Nasty
Kind of like Brett is Brett, though.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. You know, kind of like when you know him. I love Brett. I think I love playing with him. And he was. Then he was bat checking. He was. He was an incredible passer too. He could do it all. He was an incredible player. Incredible. Love playing with him. Love it.
Biz Nasty
That's awesome.
Ryan Whitney
Back to Buffalo quick. Just because you were there when Mo Gilney came over and like, just so dynamic the way he played. Like, could you tell right away? And did you know the story of how he'd like, been smuggled into the country? Basically, yeah.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. I mean, obviously it's a. It's almost same age, but we had had Esso cup back in Quebec and we played when we were like 15, 14 years old against each other. So I played with him. I knew him.
Ryan Whitney
I didn't know him, but I knew about him.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. So when he get. When he got here. So we knew each other just without, you know, talking. But he. Yeah, it was the way he, you know, defected and.
Ryan Whitney
Crazy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. Unbelievable. And then I remember that about a year after or so his mom was able to come down and she came down. They kept the rest of family home. Home. And I remember hearing the story when she went to the grocery store, just bawling just on her knee, just seeing so much food and it's just. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It was extremely emotional. That's what he was talking about. Yeah, yeah. Alex. Alex lives not too far from here, I guess. Yeah, yeah. Thanks.
Paul Bissonnette
Get him out to skate.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. Oh, I'm gonna work on that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
And for him, like, obviously he knew no English. Like, there was no other Russians around. Like, were you one of those guys that kind of helped him out?
Mike Grinelli
Well, I couldn't. We couldn't speak.
Paul Bissonnette
Both people just looked at each other.
Ryan Whitney
We walked.
Mike Grinelli
So, yeah, I was able to. Yeah, we communicate a little bit. But I was gone like 2 year. A year. 2 years after too, so. And Patty came in and. Yeah, but he was in. He was fast. Like, it's. Yeah, he was fun to play with. You just left the puck behind and just let it raise and he was incredible.
Biz Nasty
As your career progressed, like, like what. What did you find the hardest thing? Like, keeping up and like, obviously staying in the league as, as you got older, I mean, you ended up on some like Dallas had a good team there. You guys had Madonna, Zubov, and they were kind of coming along. Like, what was the hardest thing about getting older while you were playing?
Mike Grinelli
It's. It. Well, it's. It's the. It's the next day, the back to back game. It's the. Now you feel it.
Biz Nasty
It's.
Mike Grinelli
It's not. You're not as. You know, when you get in the 30s, 30s, something, then you, you feel it. In my last two years with, with, with. With Colorado, I felt it right away. I said, okay, I had injuries here and there, and I said, I done. But you. I could see, I could feel the different. Getting in the 30s and then all of a sudden you, you. It's not the same. You don't. When you have 82 games to play during the year, it's a lot of games and you. You start. You. I was starting to feel it for sure.
Paul Bissonnette
It gives you more perspective. Even like the older guys, when you guys were flying commercial, like the guys that, I mean, end of your career, you're flying private everywhere.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Imagine those older guys when you're at the back end of your career flying commercial. Like, you must find it the next day. Yeah, the next day.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Biz Nasty
Crazy in Dallas, you Had Ken Hitchcock, too, and he could ride his players. And I. I just like. I think of the. How old school some of these coaches are. Like, were your. What was your time with, like, him?
Mike Grinelli
It was. I was there for a year, year and a half, and then he was gone, too, so he didn't stay long. And then we had Tippet. That came in.
Biz Nasty
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But the. The place where we had a good chance was St. Louis, and we had Pronger, Al McInnis, all these guys.
Ryan Whitney
I think you won the President's Trophy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, we did. Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
You get hurt.
Mike Grinelli
Fusey got. Yeah, yeah. Fusey was the guy was that kios.
Biz Nasty
Who landed on him or something.
Paul Bissonnette
He was such a good guy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah. Fusey was there, and we had Roman Toric the next next year after. So. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
And then those St. Louis teams were good.
Mike Grinelli
We had.
Ryan Whitney
You had some great teams, but, like, couldn't almost. It was kind of like Dallas, Colorado, St. Louis. Right. Like you'd lose to one of them.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, we. It was actually Joe Sakic. Sh. I was apparently. Penalty shot, I think. And he scored the penalty shot against Roman Turek. Yeah. So to finish. Yeah. The series. But, yeah, it was. It was. The team went hard. It was a hard. I mean. Yeah. You know, Colorado was a good team, and we had Patrick Wetter score on, and it was just. Yeah. And the other side, we had Eddie Belfor and in. Yeah. In Dallas. Tough.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, it was tough.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Back to Long island, like.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Nassau Coliseum must have been nuts because, like, obviously when we came into league, it was a dump, and the team wasn't great, but I can only imagine when they had great teams. That place must have been wild.
Mike Grinelli
It was fun. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. This. This is. This is where, you know, we had Washington, and then we went to Washington and the situation with Dale and they all entered, you know, and then we went to Pittsburgh, and we want to get to Pittsburgh. You know, Game seven, ot, we won. David Volek scored from Paso Marie Ferrari, and we move on to the Montreal Canadian. And then, you know, this is where I was out for. For 10, two weeks or so. And then I still came back at it. One shoulder, but, yeah, that was. That was a. A run that we had there was incredible, too. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
So you got to take us through this infamous play where it's just brutal. You score the series winning goal.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
And you turn into the corner and. I mean, I'll never forget seeing Howard Chuck's quota. I didn't know he scored those 15, 000 people going crazy.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Just out of nowhere, boom. You're flying into the. Into the board.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. So I had it. Yeah. This is where I had a separate. I knew right away I got up. Oh. I felt like my shoulder was just not attached, you know, I knew it right away.
Ryan Whitney
Had you had battles with him in the series?
Mike Grinelli
No, no. Yeah. I never had any situation with. Before anything, you know. And he calls me three days after. He said he didn't see that. That I scored when he said 20, 000. But. But, you know, I think it was more. It was just, you know, three days after. I mean, it was. It was 93.
Ryan Whitney
That was your guy's year.
Mike Grinelli
So. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
So I thought that was the second round. So they beat Pittsburgh after that without you.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, and.
Mike Grinelli
And I'm. I'm on. I'm on the. So I asked Al Arbor to dress on game seven. And. And I. He said, are you okay to play? I said, no, but I just want to be on the bench. Some guys are not playing anyway. So it goes to do overtime, the second overtime, and he comes to me and he pushed me. He goes, can you have a shift? Do you have a shift? And you. I said, yeah. And right after David Volek scored, you.
Ryan Whitney
Were going to be out there.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah, I was going. I. I could see the level dropping down.
Ryan Whitney
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
Energy level was up. I was in the zone, even sitting there.
Ryan Whitney
Imagine if you'd went out and scored it. Holy shift.
Mike Grinelli
The whole felt.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
That's how I felt.
Ryan Whitney
I would have.
Mike Grinelli
That was just. My adrenaline was so high, and I would have gone with one shoulder. I don't care. I was going because I could see the level. Everyone was tired. Everyone couldn't battle. They couldn't have. And I had ton of energy, so I said yes. I don't know if he would have sent me, but I think he was going to.
Ryan Whitney
Wow. That would have been legendary. Do you think that it was. Was. It took so much out of you guys to get by Pittsburgh against Montreal. It was just. It was a wa. Was too good.
Mike Grinelli
Like, was unbelievable. Yeah. Yeah. Open net, like. Yes. Like. Yeah. Yeah. He had too many cheaters on him. That's right. That's what I tell him all the time. Those cheaters. Side pad.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, the old. Before they cut down.
Biz Nasty
The old guy adding gear. Before guys were adding gear, he had a jersey.
Mike Grinelli
He had a web, like, he.
Ryan Whitney
The flaps.
Mike Grinelli
His jersey he had was so big. Like, it was this. It was stopping.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
He couldn't go through his body. And then the blocks here in front. And he had blocks also on the side. He had blocks everywhere. Remember, there was no shoulder all the way here. Him.
Biz Nasty
And Jiggy, was he chirpy where, like, he'd make a save and he'd be like, oh, nice muffin. You like, would he be there?
Mike Grinelli
He didn't say that. He just went like this. We wink at you? No, but he didn't. But that's the highlight we see all the time. I think it was against la, correct?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, yeah.
Mike Grinelli
So. But he was good. He obviously, you know, when I. Even when I got traded to go there, I'm thinking, I have a job, chance to win. He's there. When you go in front, Patrick, you have a chance to win. He's unbelievable. He's. He could.
Ryan Whitney
Were you on the team that he. When he got traded?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, so you. You lost 10 to 1.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, my God.
Ryan Whitney
And then he was left in for all goals and then came on the bench.
Mike Grinelli
Listen, I. We talk about this. I mean, I. I live beside him. We drove every day to the rink. And I told him, I said, I think I could write a book on this.
Ryan Whitney
And I say.
Mike Grinelli
He goes, but you're not going to write a book on this. Yeah, but you know what? There's detail that it goes. And he. He forgot some of the details, but he. It was a big change. And I remember sitting in the locker room, the, The. The first meeting we had, Mario comes in and then the argument right off the bat, Mario wanted to say, I'm the boss. And that didn't work. That's all.
Ryan Whitney
It's just. Patrick goes. Patrick's.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah, but no, but he's a coach. Yes, but he wanted to make sure Patrick wasn't. Patrick used to decide which game he played. You know, let's say play 70 games, 10 games. So he's the one that went to. And he didn't want that. So. And. And it just turned out that was.
Ryan Whitney
The beginning of it, really.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, yeah.
Biz Nasty
And you're. And you're saying that that's the detail that kind of sparked.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah. It didn't. It didn't start well in the locker room. I think right off the bat. The first meeting we had. The first meeting we had, it didn't start camp first. No, it was just. No, not in camp. It was. It was. Demers got fired six scheme into the.
Ryan Whitney
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
The season. And then. And then they came in. Mario Trombley came in.
Ryan Whitney
Where had Tremblay been?
Mike Grinelli
It was doing video. It was doing radio in Montreal. Imagine that. I mean, I'm not saying, like, you go from radio to coach for the.
Biz Nasty
Montreal Canadien and then you're pigeon tossing Patrick Waugh.
Mike Grinelli
You know, it's tough.
Paul Bissonnette
Was he trying to, like, insert his dominance?
Mike Grinelli
He was trying. I think they were roommate when they played, right? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's even more.
Paul Bissonnette
This is why you could write a book.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah. They were roommate, and there's a lot.
Biz Nasty
What do you not give him the remote control or something?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. I don't know. But they were roommate. They were fine. Next thing you know is he got to be. Because Patrick has a lot of power. It's like.
Biz Nasty
Well, you also.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, you're right. If threats comes to the coach and say, you know what? We should have a day off today.
Ryan Whitney
You get it.
Mike Grinelli
You get your day off. You know, Flamugos. I mean, this. You got to work with your. The guys. I think that's my opinion. But, you know, it's. But Patrick was one of those guys. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Were you the captain at the time of that happening?
Mike Grinelli
No.
Biz Nasty
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
Because Kane got traded.
Biz Nasty
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. They were traded together, and then I got to be captain after.
Biz Nasty
So. Were you aware of what was happening on the bench when it was happening? Or like, did you find out or.
Ryan Whitney
It was just quick, Right. He walked down.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. But it started. I knew right away. I mean, I heard it every day, so I just knew what was happening. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
You'd heard all of this in the car.
Mike Grinelli
It was happening. It was happening. Know that it was happening. Like any. It's happening. It's a matter of time and when. Don't know. But it's going to happen.
Ryan Whitney
What was it like with the. With the no glass and. And having the. It was the ownership, right. That would sit.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Would they? Like.
Mike Grinelli
It was Corey. It was the president. Mr. Corey was sitting right beside.
Ryan Whitney
It's kind of sick looking now.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Weird as crazy.
Paul Bissonnette
Our owner and junior did the same thing. One piece of glass out and he sat right there. Obviously different than.
Biz Nasty
That's what I'm going to do in Greensboro.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Hey, we got. We bought a team. I'm gonna be like Jerry Jones. I'm gonna have ear pieces in their headset on the. On the power play. I'll be telling them what to do.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Like these fathers nowadays.
Ryan Whitney
It was crazy, the game, though. They left him in for all ten.
Mike Grinelli
Like, I don't know. All ten. Was it all.
Ryan Whitney
I think it was ten one.
Mike Grinelli
I thought it was ten one, but I think he left seven.
Ryan Whitney
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
And then he walked in Front and then got up and said, this is my last game. I'm going to play for the Montreal Canadian. Cool.
Paul Bissonnette
Remember he made a save and they were cheering him and he was waving.
Ryan Whitney
The Bronx cheered him.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Yes.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Yes.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Do you remember what it was like in the locker room after the game?
Mike Grinelli
It was quiet. And then I called him after. Said, you okay? Said, what you say? So he mentioned that. He says, in the last game, I'm playing here. That's it.
Biz Nasty
So he said, all right, we'll see you seeing warm ups when I'm replay you guys.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Hey, then he gets traded. You're captain. You're like, I got to talk to the media about this.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, the media about. The media took it right off the next day, and it just went on. But you know what? It took a while before it got traded, before they made the trade and stuff. And Pierre Laquan knew that if he was going to have Patrick wa. For the Avalanche had a chance to win.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah.
Mike Grinelli
100.
Ryan Whitney
And did they win that season? He got traded or the next year?
Mike Grinelli
I think it was that year, right? That year.
Ryan Whitney
96. They won 96. I don't know when he got dealt, if it was.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, it was 96.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, my God, it was 96.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Because they had Ambusher. Right? And then.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. And he said to Mr. Corey, said, I'm sorry to. I mean, all that I'm on. I'm gonna be winning the standing. The next Standing cup, and you won't be with me.
Biz Nasty
Oh, he said that in that to Mr. Corey.
Mike Grinelli
But he's a good friend with Mr. Corey. So he was a good friend. And he mentioned. He said, I'm gonna go in a standing cup. I'm really sorry that you're not going to be with me.
Biz Nasty
What a. So he carries his balls around a.
Mike Grinelli
Wheelbarrow a big time. And you know what? When you play in front of him, you know, you could win like, you know, you make a mistake, you might stop. I mean, he's. I don't know. I mean, there's. There a lot. Obviously all goalies, I mean, they make big difference. I mean, obviously there's a lot of good goalies. But, you know, going there for me, it was like, whoa.
Biz Nasty
If you rung one off his head in practice, would he come and try and fight you?
Mike Grinelli
He would. No. But he won. He was so competitive. I wanted to score every time on him. And if I scored, I buzz up around him and I'm like, you know what? There we go. Take that. Yeah. For sure.
Paul Bissonnette
You know, Ray Borg told me like he would. The Patty would come in and be like hey guys, you guys score one more, I'll shut it down. Like they're not gonna get it.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, that's how he was. He said that. That's how he was. Like I'm gonna shut it down. That's it. Just the guys. Oh yeah, yeah. But you, you feel that, you feel as a forward, as a player too, you feel that? Yeah, you're about the back is. Is good.
Paul Bissonnette
Would you say he's the best all around player you ever played with?
Ryan Whitney
With?
Mike Grinelli
I'm going to say yes.
Paul Bissonnette
Wow.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. But all around I said the as goalie. There's a lot of good players I played with obviously. But yeah, I mean there we're talking about Mark Ricky had played with him in, in Montreal. He was there. Vus these guys were. And, and Pavel Dimitro, which is the most under player I played with. Really incredible player Scott Young. You know, these k could release that puck quick. And I played with, you know, so I played with a lot of.
Ryan Whitney
Looking at this team, 95 good players. So 95, 96.
Mike Grinelli
It's unbelievable the team behind you.
Ryan Whitney
I. I wonder if a player for the Canadiens has had 96 points ever since. You might have the most recent.
Mike Grinelli
Maybe.
Ryan Whitney
I don't know if anybody's had 90.
Biz Nasty
No, I don't think they've had 100 point guy in a long time.
Ryan Whitney
But you had you damfoose re Saku Koivu. Like what a team. Who'd you lose to in the first round that year?
Mike Grinelli
Do you remember? It was a Ranger.
Ryan Whitney
Rangers. Oh yeah. Must have been a good team.
Mike Grinelli
It was unbelievable. Yeah. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Well, you got to play. Oh you got to play with Otoline.
Biz Nasty
Mark Recky is one of your favorites.
Mike Grinelli
He's incredible. Animal better be ready because the puck is coming. It's a laser.
Ryan Whitney
That guy was an animal.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, works all the time.
Ryan Whitney
Just he'd go in the corner like a little shorter stride, come out of the puck with the corner. With the puck.
Mike Grinelli
He was smart.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
How many years did he play? 20.
Mike Grinelli
20? Oh, even more than that, I think. Even more. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
Think played 1652 games and then 189 in the playoffs.
Paul Bissonnette
Oh my God.
Mike Grinelli
That's unbelievable.
Ryan Whitney
I mean he started in 88, 89. His last year was 2010, 2011. 21 years. Jesus. And he. And there's a lot of like 82 game seasons for him too.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
You said you felt your time coming to an end in Colorado.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Like, what did, like, did you talk, like, think about the future when you were going to retire? Like, what was next? Like, were you. Are you pretty good at staying in the moment? Kind of the.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, I wanted to enjoy my last, my last couple years and I. And so we. Me, I used to drive with Joe. Psychic, good friend with Joe.
Biz Nasty
So you drove with some legends.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, but Joe's the first class man. Joe was a freaking.
Biz Nasty
I heard.
Mike Grinelli
Unbelievable. Yeah. And, and, and we're driving and we went to. When we went on the road. Road get back on the, on the plane. And when we're coming back, I used to, used to have a bottle of wine. So it's just. He goes, I want one glass. That's it. So. And we weren't allowed to drink. So. So I get, I get the. And then everyone sees that have a bottle. So everyone comes down, say, you have some wine. So next thing you know, I bring two bottles, three bottles, four bottles. And then I have four bottles in my bag. And we're not, we're not allowed. My two years, my last two years, we're not allowed to have drinks on the, on the plane.
Ryan Whitney
That wasn't common then, was it?
Mike Grinelli
While Pierre.
Ryan Whitney
Okay.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. Peterson. So we're in Chicago. The guy in the locker room, I asked him, I said, can you go get me some wine? There's a, there's a bar restaurant down the main, the main floor, you know, where there's wines. So can you get me four bottle of wine? We're taking the plane after. I just want to make sure we put on my bag and I'll bring it, sir. So the guy goes and tells a guy, he said, pierre wants, you know, bought a bottle of wines, go get the phone. So he goes, kids, four bottle of wine. He comes back, Pierre like was walking in front. He says, Pierre, I have you four bottle of wines for the plate for you. And he goes, this is, this is it. Yeah. And he goes, he goes, I didn't order four bottle of wines. Don't. Don't talk to me about that. So excuse. And he never talked to me and said any word about that. I bought four, four bottle of wines. But he was my agent.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah, I was just gonna say.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah. Got to know I was 11 years old. Well, I was. Used to stay at his house when I was young. So yeah. So I have four bottle wines and I bring. It never said anything. And we used to catch up. Before he passed away, we were in Vail and we got back together and we were. And I mentioned that story Because I knew, you know, just I knew exactly. So I just didn't say anything.
Paul Bissonnette
But there was only one other Pierre that it could have been.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Because he was, he was raised agent. Was he Patty's agent too?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
So he had all you guys in there. Yeah, came.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, Savar, Denise Savar. Yeah, yeah, a lot of guys. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Paul Bissonnette
Was. Did you know he wanted to do that?
Mike Grinelli
So. Yeah, wait, no, not at the beginning. But then it, it changed, you know. So at one point you could tell he wanted to, he wanted to have a different challenge and he wanted to be a, you know, manager. And so he went to Quebec City and then after Quebec City he moved the team, they moved the team to Colorado. But you could tell he wanted to have a different challenge, you know, but he had a huge, huge influence in my career for sure, as far as thinking future and thinking ahead. And we used to have. This is inside a little bit, but we used to have a meeting every year. They used to call the electric chair. So we used to sit down. After a year we made a hundred thousand pay 40,000, you know, you have 630 of the bank 30. Where did you spend your 30,000? So we used to have to explain our money.
Ryan Whitney
That's smart.
Mike Grinelli
Oh, no kidding. So, so we wrote it down. We didn't ask have no software. No. So we wrote it down and we're missing 5,000. He goes, where's the 5,000? Listen, I don't know. So, so the next year I'm thinking, freaking I'll be ready next year. I'll make sure I'm not going to miss anything. So I wrote everything down. So I. As far as when you say Miss 5000, we didn't know where it went, you know, I mean we didn't know the spending was so. And then it made you connect it with your money, made you connect it where you, where it was going. And then we had an investor beside us, us that they were thinking, that's compounding. Look at 50s, you're thinking 2050s. Am I going to be there? You don't even know, you know, you're not thinking.
Ryan Whitney
You don't even think. I know.
Mike Grinelli
But looking back today, it's crazy, you know, I mean it's, it's, it's, it's a, it's a skill. It's something that they showed us what to do and at a young age, right. And we were making a hundred thousand dollar then. It was not a lot of money, but it was still a lot of money. But you're Thinking if I could pay a house and be fine and then I'll go work, work. That was my mindset. And then 90s is the second contract change.
Biz Nasty
And then that's what Dave Tippett used to always tell me. It's not what you make, it's what you say.
Mike Grinelli
100. Like a lot of.
Biz Nasty
A lot of guys were just not educated like that back then. And you didn't have the resources to the Internet, where you could even learn through that type of stuff. And so, I mean, sometimes you'd run into scammers and everything. So did you have anything away from the game, hobby wise? Like even while you were playing or then after you retired, like, what did you get into? Like outside of hockey?
Mike Grinelli
After hockey?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, yeah. Or did you have hobbies?
Mike Grinelli
The hobbies was the cottage, spending time with the kids, you know, the toys. That's we. That's what we did. And the memories we had that were incredible.
Biz Nasty
That's.
Mike Grinelli
Where was your cottage in the war, Nanda.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, where were you from?
Mike Grinelli
Go back. We drove back.
Ryan Whitney
It was great town. In the summer though, like on the lake.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, we had some. Some summers were nice. Some summer they weren't as nice. Yeah, but we still made it. The. The kids didn't care. They want. They wanted to be on the water. They had wetsuit, they had, you know, body glove, wetsuit, all that stuff we used to have. And we just went. And they used to jet ski. You see all that stuff. But the memories. We didn't have Internet. We didn't have tv. We didn't have. And we just, Just lived. Loved it. You just loved the best. You talk to our kids today. They've been to a lot of place. It's the best, best memories they have middle of nowhere where. Yeah, it's a beautiful thing.
Biz Nasty
And then, and then when you retired, like what got what caught your interest first? Like, what did you end up doing, like with your time?
Mike Grinelli
I just want to just be around the kids and coach the kids. That's what I did. I was involved in coaching.
Ryan Whitney
Yeah. Your son was picked by Detroit.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was picked by Detroit. He played eight games, you know, in the NHL. He was trying to make it.
Ryan Whitney
He made the NHL.
Mike Grinelli
He blocked shot. There's something I didn't do in my career.
Biz Nasty
Where do you learn that?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, yeah. Not for me.
Paul Bissonnette
You just went over and saw him in Germany.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, so I went to Germany. Yeah. Yeah. It was fun. Yeah. It's funny because. Did I told you that? Yeah. So I go, we. He's got two or three games Christmas time, and we're going 16 up to the 29. And. And first two chef. And the guy drops him, fight him. He hits him, cuts him here and he's out for the rest. So I didn't see. I saw.
Biz Nasty
I saw two Chef.
Mike Grinelli
I'm like, are you kidding me? And then you had a guy went left. He broke his hand. And it's just. He was a lefty too, but he dropped him. My son had. You could see pictures. My son still had his glove on. And the guy dropped in and start.
Ryan Whitney
You know. But anyway, you saw two chefs on a trip to Germany.
Mike Grinelli
So we went to the. The Christmas market, which is in Germany. It's unbelievable to see, by the way. Unreal.
Ryan Whitney
That's what Merle's raves about. Our buddy played there. He says they're in like every city has one. He says they're unreal. Yeah, like all the crazy Christmas stuff. Drinks.
Mike Grinelli
Like it's freezing outside. Guys are all dressed. Well, they're all drinking outside, eating, and it's freezing.
Paul Bissonnette
Like, okay, like in Quebec.
Biz Nasty
Cool culture.
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, no, no. But yeah, Quebec, we don't even go outside.
Biz Nasty
No, no, we go inside.
Mike Grinelli
But these guys, it's just. It's a tradition. You could tell. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
It's time for the. The rollback. Last question. Use code chiclets on roback.com for a generous 20 off your first pet purchase through the end of the month at CH I C-L-T S on R H O-B-A-C-K.com 20 off all hoodies, joggers, and more with code chick roback.com. my question is, that is one of the most beautiful watches I've ever seen in my life. Where is that thing from? Did you wouldn't have bought that if you still had the electric chair meetings with Lacroix?
Mike Grinelli
It took a while before I bought that.
Ryan Whitney
That.
Mike Grinelli
Those. Yeah.
Ryan Whitney
What is that?
Mike Grinelli
You know what that was?
Paul Bissonnette
It's a rightling.
Ryan Whitney
Oh, bright team.
Mike Grinelli
We used to have those 40 off with the.
Ryan Whitney
With the NH Shell biz.
Paul Bissonnette
Used to buy them and sell them for 40% more.
Biz Nasty
Out of the trunk of my car.
Paul Bissonnette
The place in Toronto.
Ryan Whitney
What did. What did your team. Where were you for a thousand games and did they get you anything special? Like Keith, you guys were telling me that you got Jovo around at Augusta or something.
Paul Bissonnette
Yeah, I think it was Jo.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, we got him a putter that said Augusta on it whenever he was going to get going.
Ryan Whitney
Do you remember your gift or anything?
Mike Grinelli
Yeah, it was A. It was a Rolex because I love watch. It was a Rolex in St. Louis. They bought me a Rolex in St. Classy. Did you love as a thousand game in the back?
Ryan Whitney
Oh, it does. It's pretty cool. Oh, that's awesome. So, so many guys love St. Louis that they stayed there. Did you. Did you sense that?
Mike Grinelli
Did you feel. Oh, yeah, for sure. It's a good city. It's a good city, good sport town. The people there were great. The fans are awesome. And teammate we had. It was incredible. It was fun. It was fun. So, yeah, you could see that there's a lot of people after hockey. They live there because it's a great place to live, raise a family, you have kids. If you have kids involved in hockey, they have a great program too and stuff. So it's a good place. Great place.
Biz Nasty
Well, Pierre hall of Famer, man, you just seem so grateful for your time in hockey and what you were able to accomplish, and we can. Can't be more grateful for your time here. And, and the stories. And those Patty Wash stories are awesome. I think people there's more of it.
Mike Grinelli
It's in. It's in the bag. Yeah. But thank you for having me. Appreciate it, guys. And congratulations on what you guys do because it's so much fun to watch you guys doing what you do and, and, and looking forward to see, you know, more show. For sure.
Ryan Whitney
I love it.
Mike Grinelli
Thank you.
Biz Nasty
Thank you so much.
Mike Grinelli
Thank you.
Ryan Whitney
