Army Armstrong
Shave his head.

Chick Flick FL.
Yancey Thigpen
What is up guys? Welcome to episode 578 of the Spitting Chicklets podcast. Summer's ending, but pink Whitney season isn't ending. Biz. Look at that hat. Biz. What an absolute clown you are.
Biz Nunez
You know what?
Yancey Thigpen
You could look great though, even in that hat. Wearing and drinking some pink Whitney Army. You know what's up? End of summer, you know, still have the pink Whitney around the pool. The dog days. So go grab a big bottle, go grab a little bottle, go grab a little nip and wear business hat and you can enjoy pink Whitney. So guys, what's going on? Biz? I you look like it though. I gotta give you credit.
Army Armstrong
Samuel L. Jackson. Doesn't he wear those hats?
Yancey Thigpen
He's a guy like you go to a safari and then like all of a sudden like he's with your wife at the safari. He was leading the whole thing with that hat on.
Army Armstrong
He's doing a real elephant walk with the elephants.
Biz Nunez
I I agree with you Army. You said Samuel L. I would also say Jama. Jamerica, the old artist. Two bangers. Don't know how many he had after that, I only remember the two popular songs he had. But army, when I see these types of things, I go, I'm gonna get that just to wear it in front of Wit. So he chirps me and we all get a good laugh, right?
Army Armstrong
So the thing is, is like you can pull it off. Like, that's a cool thing about you. Like, if I wore that hat. Like, if you can. If you, if you pan down, I'm hanging from my tighty whitey undies on a hook in a bathroom with.
Biz Nunez
That's funny that you say that.
Army Armstrong
That's what I look like.
Biz Nunez
She got you one.
Yancey Thigpen
He got you one.
Cal Clutterbuck
No way.
Biz Nunez
A matching bucket hat.
Army Armstrong
The guy that would give you a shirt off his back gives me a matching hat.
Biz Nunez
Thank you.
Army Armstrong
Amazing. What a guy. I miss you guys.
Yancey Thigpen
You can't wear it if he. If he wears it too that night because it's like, yo, that guy looks.
Biz Nunez
I actually.
Yancey Thigpen
You look.
Biz Nunez
Actually, I actually got it for Wit, so we could match it. Chicklet's cup. But I guess that he ain't throwing it on at this point.
Yancey Thigpen
No, dude, I'm on the Boston Stranglers logo released. Don't know if you saw the team logo. Phenomenal. I think I actually army when I tell you what Biz did at this Internet invitational. I don't even want to get into it yet. This guy tells you think he can't shock you? He shocks you an extra an extra times 10. Like, so I'll get into that later. But looking at your hat, it just reminded me you are one ridiculous human army. We wanted, we wanted to have. Have you on mainly to catch up how the summer's been. Cruz is going back to hockey. Family's probably getting ready for school. But you were also at the flowers retirement party, which just the pictures that came out of there look like an all time night.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. So school's starting up, right, boys? I got buddies that have kids in school starting today, first day back.
Yancey Thigpen
That's crazy.
Army Armstrong
And I'm just like my. I'm getting like anxiety. I'm like, oh, my God, it's over. Summer's over. What a great summer. Yeah. And then the, the Flurry party. To be able to go to that. And in prior podcasts of listening to you guys and Keith and lacrosse and you with your kids, hockey wit and hanging out with like dads and, you know, that's my life now. That's what I do. I get the Chicklets trip. I get that kind of good stuff. But I got the Flurry party and I'm telling you, it was incredible. The guys, the wives. It was just like, like the Minnesota Wild guys that were there. These guys are unbelievable guys. Just on like, it's like I'm on the team. It's like I was on the team, hanging out with them. You know how easy it is.
Biz Nunez
You've played with half of them.
Army Armstrong
A few of them, yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
Was Bogosian there?
Army Armstrong
Boghossian. This fucking guy is unreal. Guy is built like an absolute house truck. He's got the Brent Burns starter kit rolling. He's beard, he's got the mullet. He's got everything going. We're at the party. So you want me to start from the start how great it was?
Biz Nunez
Start us through.
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, yeah.
Army Armstrong
I played with, with Bogosian when he was 18, 19 years old, just cracking in in Atlanta and I haven't seen him. I seen him in the dressing room here and there. But like, I haven't seen him like hanging out with him ever. Now he's got a wife, he's got four kids. So just like time has flown by. I met his wife, it was awesome. She was great. But we get to this party, I get up there, we go to this venue. It's. It's like a wedding. It's unbelievable. Beautiful set up in this like car, like exotic car themed kind of venue that they have. It was. It was unreal. There's like these sports cars everywhere. All red. It looked just sick. You know Flurry likes his cars, right?
Biz Nunez
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Army Armstrong
So it like, it was perfect theme. Big long tables on either side of this little stage in the middle with this beautiful French girl with this old school microphone just singing in the middle, standing up there, just going. And I'm like, whoa, this is like fancy as hell. Like, it was like Veronika's wife put on a, like, I don't know how they planned it, a party plan or whatever. It was awesome setup. Food was great. Max Talbot did an unbelievable speech. He wrote this awesome poem out, you know, like, wrote the poem. He wrote a big poem about Flurry's whole career. Like tied it all in all together. It was Talbot. It was very.
Biz Nunez
He's a very, like, he's very tapped into his emotions.
Yancey Thigpen
And I would say he's an artistic guy. A little bit.
Biz Nunez
Very.
Army Armstrong
Yeah.
Biz Nunez
Sitting down with him again. When we were in Montreal there for the four nations, like, it was just great catching up from. And him and Flower were like, they kind of had that French connection of him, Latang Flower. And I feel like Sid was Even almost part of that French crew too, right?
Army Armstrong
Yeah, for sure. Yeah. And. And everyone was kind of young too, right? Like, it was. It was. They were all just. We were all just like buddies. Like, we all were in Wilkes together. We're all just like buddies. It was awesome. So it was kind of cool to be there. Talbo was there. Like, Dupuy was there. Andre Waugh was a maniac. I think I. I think I have a hernia from laughing so hard. Like, this guy was just on fire. Like later on in the night with dance moves and stuff. Just a beauty.
Yancey Thigpen
Was he doing the imitations?
Army Armstrong
Oh, he had them all going. He had them all. It was unreal. He's doing leg kicks, pretending to drink a candle. You know, just casually, like doing all these things. Like, I was. Buddy, I was. He was incredible. I was just dying with Alan Walsh. His agent was there. Like, he was just loving it, hanging out.
Yancey Thigpen
Always put out, like at least two, three fires too. Like defending Flurry.
Army Armstrong
He's a battler.
Yancey Thigpen
The stab in the back tweet was the all time.
Biz Nunez
That's all.
Yancey Thigpen
One of the best agent tweets I've ever seen.
Army Armstrong
Maybe ever. Yeah.
Biz Nunez
You also mentioned that Bogosian got on the mic a few times, didn't he?
Army Armstrong
Buddy. Buddy. So I woke up the next morning, pretty foggy. This is literally the first thing I said. I woke up next to my wife in this nice hotel in Montreal and I rolled over and I'm like, holy, Bogosian can sing. I had no buddy. All of a sudden this DJ is playing after the dinner and this little couple speeches and everyone's going. And like, it's picking up. We're getting her going. Then we get in this other room, which is like set up for like kind of like an after party setup. And all of a sudden there's this DJ dude just playing sick tunes. Like, the dance floors rock and the boys are going. You know, everyone's just comfy. Everyone, like, everyone gets it. Like, no judgment zone. Like just being beauties. Like, later on, guys have their tarps off. You know, one of those ones. It was getting going pretty good. And also I hear like a voice. I'm like, what the hell is that? Is somebody singing? It sounded amazing. It was like, he sounded great. I look over, I go around the back and Bogojin has like the DJs mic and he's singing a song. Singing the song. And he's like, in the. Now he's on the dance floor, he's singing a song, he's walking around with the boys.
Yancey Thigpen
What music genre?
Army Armstrong
It was a country song. It was like a good country song. And he had it down good. And then he sang another one later. It was just unbelievable. What a beauty. And then the best part was like, ryan Hartman, this guy. I love this guy. This guy is just a weapon.
Biz Nunez
He's a savage out there.
Army Armstrong
Lunatic on the ice.
Biz Nunez
He'll stick you right in the nuts.
Army Armstrong
That's kind of why I like him, because he's a lunatic, I think, but just a great guy. And, like, I was, like, hanging out with him, getting to know him, and he's just, like, kind of hanging out. He wants to sing a song now. Just a beauty. So I'm like, All right, Billy G's ripping around.
Yancey Thigpen
Picture. Billy G's got the flow.
Army Armstrong
Oh, yeah. He looks like Shooter McGavin. He looks like Shooter McGavin when he was in the state asylum. He got out on the new movie, but he's wheeling her out with his. His. His guys on his team are a. He's got a great dressing room. Like, those guys are beauties. Like, Marcus Felino. The Moose. Gologoski was there too. An ex guy as well. Kicking around, but unreal. Guy got along great with him. But Hartman went to go sing a song. He's like, let me sing. So he takes it. He's singing an entire song. I'm standing next to him so I can hear him. Sounds good. I go, buddy, you're killing it. Sounds great. Bogo comes flying over, like, 6, 4, 2, 30. Just.
Biz Nunez
He's like, hey, the guy.
Army Armstrong
Shut your microphone off.
Biz Nunez
You're actually not even singing.
Army Armstrong
And he's like, what? So Pogo takes the mic, goes up.
Biz Nunez
It, like, gives it to the dj.
Army Armstrong
Also, the mic's back on and he steals it. He's singing again.
Cal Clutterbuck
Wow.
Yancey Thigpen
It didn't work.
Army Armstrong
He got the mic back. Hartman did. Couldn't get it going.
Biz Nunez
But was Bosan better at singing than. Than Hartman was?
Army Armstrong
Hartman was good, though. I give him credit. But Book Bogo was unbelievable.
Biz Nunez
Anybody else get on the mic to sing or do any, like, funny stuff? You mentioned Talbot with the. With the emotional speech, but was there any, like, funny speeches? Anybody go off the rails?
Army Armstrong
No, no one went really off the rails. It was. It was all class. Just good times with the fellas. And. And, I mean, I was just happy and my wife were saying this to, like, like, just the awesome, like, hockey vibe, like, acceptance of, like, anybody. I was sitting. I never met Malcolm Suban, really. I was sitting at dinner with him. Just an unbelievable Guy just Flower, like, idolizes Flower. He couldn't even kept saying to me, I can't believe I'm here. I can't make you. Fuck you. You played with a dude. You're like, it's just.
Yancey Thigpen
The guy is also invited to this.
Biz Nunez
He's like, thanks for not taking the net from me like all the other guys.
Army Armstrong
10 out of 10. 10 out of 10, sweetheart. Malcolm Soup. And Hal Gill was there. Great to see him. I heard Diane saying he ran into him on our group chat and how.
Biz Nunez
He'S good to Skills. He still buddy. That's crazy for somebody who drinks a thousand beers a night.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, I know. That's all he does is drink beers. And he's ripped and he's jacked. He looks amazing. He looks like a male model in, like, a Big and Tall catalog or something.
Yancey Thigpen
So Army. Did they have. Did they have a. Was there maybe a video of like a. Like, highlights of his, or is it too classy for that?
Biz Nunez
Yeah, there was Columbus just on repeat that correct.
Yancey Thigpen
That's. That's probably like they're going through, like, the rosters of the teams and all the guys he play with, they're like, no, no, no, no. I almost broke. Broke my leg in Columbus.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Yeah. Well, no, there was a slideshow, though. Like a wedding. Like, you know, you have, like, a wedding slideshow. So that was playing the whole time of, like, him winning, him starting, him getting drafted, pictures with his family pictured with. With random guys. Biz. You're in there in one of the draft pictures, too. I got. Actually took a picture of it. I meant to send it to you.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, one that, like, Jonathan Felwic Stoners in it. Carcillo's in it. Yeah, I remember that.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, that picture.
Biz Nunez
I was honored to be drafted. Not only the first. The. The same year as him, but they put me with them as roommates towards the end of that first training camp. So, like, that's like a feather in my cap, the fact that I got the room.
Yancey Thigpen
An alarm started going off in the GM's office. Who the hell I lost with. Flurry.
Army Armstrong
Was on the radar.
Biz Nunez
Hey, two or three nights. And they're like, yeah, no, this is not the example we're trying to set for our first.
Yancey Thigpen
I would have loved to somehow get into the highlight package and. And you know the. The video they played and just like, chucked in when. When Flower shot it off. Patrick o' Sullivan and USA won the world Judas. The whole party's like, what the. I'm sitting there, who did that?
Army Armstrong
Sitting at ground round in Wilkesbury with the myrrh when that happened.
Yancey Thigpen
Controlling it on a computer thousands of miles away.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Though he. But I think we could all agree, boys, that Mark Andre Fleury, one of the. For goaltenders to like, put him in. That could just put them in category of guys, like, all time. One of the greatest teammates, classiest guys, best guy. Just unbelievable at this party and event. Talking to everybody, schmoozing around. You know how he is. He's just so easy and great. His wife just all class by. By them and their family with this event. The next day, boys hosted us at their house. Beautiful house on. What is that. That St. Lawrence River. Like it. It was. It was amazing. Well, I hope yard. Yeah, he's loaded, but just a sickest setup. Sick house. All his masks down in the basement. When I went and gave myself a personal tour, creeping around, flurries. I was like a psycho. I almost died, though. I did almost die. I. I asked Bogojian because he grew up in Messina, New York, which is like, on the St. Lawrence. And like, he's very. I'm not. I'm a lake guy, and I like lakes biz. I know you're really big in the top 10 boating situations, but I want.
Biz Nunez
To go, like, you know, if you want to get into the. The boating.
Army Armstrong
I mean, I don't know where this is on the boating rankings, boys, but I was like, I want to go for a tour. So I'm like, bogo. I'm like, you want to take me on a jet ski and just rip down and we'll go look around what's going on. There's, like, giant cargo ships going by, boys. This is re. This is serious place. So I'm like, okay, we get on there. I got the life jacket. I got him. I'm holding on to him. I'm holding on to this, like, thing. Like, there's like, a strap you can kind of grab for the guy in the back. He. He's. He's going. It's all nice. He starts in. He flooring it. He's flooring it.
Yancey Thigpen
We're hitting singing, too.
Army Armstrong
He's laughing like a psycho. He's going so fast. So every bump, I'm. I'm like. I'm freaking out. Like, slow down, Slow down. Oh, my God. I'm not a daredevil. I'm not a freak. I just wanted to go for, like, a fun dad ride, like, with a coffee in my hand. And look at. Oh, look at that house. Oh, I'm that guy.
Biz Nunez
Agreed.
Army Armstrong
We turn around. I'm like, hey, let's go back. I'm freaking out. He's like, okay. I'm like, don't go fast anymore. That's crazy. I'm bopping off the back like it's nuts. He's like, okay, okay. Starts gunning it. And I mean, like, I. I think we're going like 60 miles an hour. These jets.
Yancey Thigpen
I'm not down with that.
Biz Nunez
Nobody lose my mind.
Army Armstrong
Buddy. I fucking flipped off the back. I hit the water. I wish. I wish there was a video of it. I must have done a hundred cartwheels across the top of the water. I hit.
Yancey Thigpen
Boom.
Army Armstrong
Like, the right side of my body was completely blown apart. And all of a sudden I landed. I couldn't breathe. I was like. I floated up to the top of the water. I look Bogo sitting there. He's like.
Yancey Thigpen
He's tried giving Hartman the mic.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah.
Army Armstrong
Must say, yeah.
Biz Nunez
Payback.
Army Armstrong
That doesn't definitely pay back. That doesn't happen when Bo goes around, come and pick me up. Another boat came over, like, to check on us. I gave him, like, the good wave, but I was, like, dying.
Cal Clutterbuck
I was like.
Army Armstrong
I was just insane. Got back there, and I was just like, oh, my God. I'm, like, trying to do body assessment.
Yancey Thigpen
But thing that you couldn't hold on. Like, you weren't kind of strong enough.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Well, when you're going that fast and you hit, like, one little wake wave from, like, something else. Like, I was bucking around like. Like on. At, like one of those. Like at one of those country bars, riding one of them bulls, trying to hang on for dear life. I was on the back. I had nothing. I just. I. I couldn't. I teetered off and boom. It was like hitting. It was like a car crash, man. It was.
Biz Nunez
That's when. That's when you got to reach around and just pinch his nipples. The faster he goes, the harder you squeeze.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. I should have been me.
Yancey Thigpen
Might even go faster if you do that, though.
Biz Nunez
Yeah. Yeah, maybe he likes that kind of stuff.
Yancey Thigpen
You hit 100, you pinch your nipples.
Biz Nunez
No, I'm not into, like, the dominatrix type stuff.
Yancey Thigpen
No, I know if I bench your.
Army Armstrong
Nipples best, you would gun that jet ski so hard, it'd just be buzzing. But great night. Great night. Great. Two nights a night, in the day.
Biz Nunez
How many former teammates would you say showed up and. And how many of the original cup winning team? I mean, you talked about Billy G. I think I saw a few other guys, obviously. Pascal DePuy.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Jocelyn Tebow was there. He wasn't on the team, but he was there as well. Great.
Yancey Thigpen
Craig Adams there.
Army Armstrong
Steph Dubay was there. Steph Dubay, old strength coach. Steph Dubay was there. Haven't seen him in a long time. Great seeing him. It was. Who there? Sorry.
Yancey Thigpen
Craig Adams.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, Craig Adams was there. Kunitz was there. Off those pens. You look.
Biz Nunez
Kunitz doesn't look like he's 80 a day.
Army Armstrong
No, he doesn't. Craig Adams is shredded. He must be doing Iron Mans or something. Everyone looked great though. And that I, I give Billy G. A ton of credit with the guys that he has there. Middleton, all those guys were there like Spurgeon, awesome guy. They got a great group. They got a solid good.
Biz Nunez
So it seems like majority of the Minnesota. I would imagine there was probably a lot of golden knights. Did you just say revoir?
Army Armstrong
Revo was there. Yeah, Revo was there. Beauty. Got to hang out with him. He was in great form. Tarps off just being a party. Loving it. Got a one year deal down in San Jose. We got to get him another year deal. This is what got to work on this. He's got to get a thousand games.
Yancey Thigpen
Old Revo, we got to get him about that. He's not.
Biz Nunez
He'll get there.
Army Armstrong
He's got to play all year. He's got to get a few next year and then he's got it.
Yancey Thigpen
But he's got on this show. He might have told us or at one point might have mentioned to us at a dinner. He was like, yeah, I never thought I'd get a hundred. I got a hundred. I said, oh my God, there's no chance. I get two. And it's just kept happening and happening. So for him to get a thousand would be amazing.
Biz Nunez
How many guys have to play another what, 8, 88 games? He's at 9, 912 right now. And I don't think he signed a one year deal. I think it was the last year of his sign with the Leaf. I think he signed a three year deal at like a million and a half per. So talking about games as well as. As he's probably made, I would say he's probably made close to 15, 20 sheets at this point.
Army Armstrong
Greers, he's just got to Reese just extend them to the extra year and just have him around with those young kids and, and, and Ghost there has.
Yancey Thigpen
A good year and they're going to be better than they were last year.
Army Armstrong
Yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
And then all of a sudden, all right, let's give him another year deal.
Biz Nunez
Well and you got to protect those young guys too, right? Nobody's going to around if he's out there on ice.
Army Armstrong
Hey, this Marcus Foligno's a beauty though.
Biz Nunez
Oh yeah, I love.
Yancey Thigpen
I think both those guys are all.
Army Armstrong
Time guys like grew up in the NHL. Pretty much like both felinos. Just a beauty. This Marcus is awesome. These guys were. I had a great time. So thank you to all of them. Congrats to flower on his retirement. I. I left him with this. I said hey, come January when a couple teams, a goalie goes down and you get a call, a couple mil to come in prorated.
Biz Nunez
I said he could just ebug it. Don't say 32 ebugs.
Army Armstrong
He looks great. He could still play. Like are we kidding ourselves here? Like easily. He could still play. He's unbelievable shape. Unbelievable. By the way, took a dunk in his cold tub in his backyard too. I was just abusing the facilities all over flowers house that day. So thank you.
Biz Nunez
Phoenix panties. Just really just going, hey, is this Dubai?
Yancey Thigpen
They're like army. Army.
Biz Nunez
Yeah.
Army Armstrong
I thought this was goalie mask. Shout out to V though. Classiest thing. It was like a wedding I was at, boys. And they're the best since day one in Wilkes where it all started. I was gonna get them like something from Wilkes on the rip through it dropped off the kids in Wilkes at the in laws, ripped up to Montreal is gonna grab him, bring them the.
Yancey Thigpen
Olive garden bread.
Army Armstrong
Get him a tux doll like the, the mascot tux.
Biz Nunez
Outside of Flurry and his wife who. Who was the first star of the whole. The whole shebang bang.
Army Armstrong
In my opinion, Bogosian.
Biz Nunez
Okay.
Yancey Thigpen
Wow.
Army Armstrong
I know. I love the guy. I love the guy. I love him. I don't care. It was a great experience. I don't care. I never crashed that hard, boys. It was the first time I ever really crashed hard like that. Unbelievable. I'd never do it again.
Biz Nunez
Moving away from the party, a couple things I was going to ask you. What type of shape are you in right now? You're getting ready for another Chiclets cup, much like me. I felt like part of your summer focus was not only going to be getting some nice time off with the family, but also getting in better shape. How is that been going? You look great. You look like you got a bit of a tan. It kind of looks more like pink, but still a tan.
Yancey Thigpen
I respect.
Army Armstrong
I was out in the sun today because I'm panic buttoning it because people are going back to school. Like I said, so I was like, I got to absorb sun. So I was out there today. Full, full boiler. Then back roll timer on my phone. I got to be smart about it. I'll go, I'll burn. So I got that going. But I have been working out boys. I got in the gym with my son back here, Lauren Goldenberg, longtime trainer. You know him, Biz, you must have worked out up, up with Matty Nickel and. And those guys at the. He'd be kicking around. Longtime NHL trainer. He's here. He did like a little thing for kids. Got back in the game and he's. He's been going. So he got me in there and I'm doing dad workouts. I'm getting it going. But biz, I always scoffed at you, always about your hiking. The hiking, it sounds lame. Sounds like work.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah, I got no army.
Army Armstrong
You're into it, buddy. I never. I usually just power walk around my neighborhood like a loser. That's loser. Going to a trail. I got an app now, this all. All trails app. Do you have that biz?
Biz Nunez
Oh, I got it. Oh, I got it.
Army Armstrong
Dial in any trail around wherever you are and you rates it like, is it hard? Is it moderate, Is it easy? How long it is? How long will it take you to do. There's trails crossing over other trails. It gives you a route to get the miles in. I've been pounding out trail heights, buddy. It's so good. Uphills, rest a bit downhill, work the quads back up. Just power. Good posture, good form. Power in the glutes.
Biz Nunez
Also just to escape. You said the power walks around the neighborhood, but just to be away from houses and cars and people and just to dial out how, how, how much has it done for your mentals?
Army Armstrong
Oh, it's great. And I've been sleeping much better. I'll say this so people that haven't taken the jump yet or they're waiting to hit rock bottom and I've talked about this on game notes all the time in Merle's to get into it. Like, you know, get to get in shape and arm zempic in this whole thing. Hahaha. But like I feel great. I feel good. I'm up early, I get after it. And you know what? I always depended and you guys may be the same. Maybe, maybe not. Biz, because he can go do it on his own, but he does like to have like a support group of boys and buddies. But like I've. I've been getting up and going on my own. I go for solo hikes and I'm. I'm getting up and going and doing it, like, motivated where before I was like, oh, maybe I'll start today. Maybe I won't. I'm waiting for a buddy to, like, grab me and bring me with them. I'm. Now I'm in the zone. I got Lornie got me going. Lauren Goldenberg, and now I'm just rolling. So I feel great. I feel good for you, buddy. That's awesome.
Cal Clutterbuck
Here.
Army Armstrong
I love it. Little. Little caution to the people that are getting going again. I did rip my hammy. I have an old figure skating injury. Wit from when I.
Biz Nunez
From your battle blades.
Army Armstrong
Battle of the blades dropped. This poor Russian chick gave her a back breaker over my knee. Lifting her saved her from dying with a. With a skull fracture, but in the. In the process tore my hamstring. I was down and out. I always am worried about it. It's always in my head. Like, it's. It's. It's kind of like a lingering. Like, a hammy is a dangerous thing. So last week, I get back from flurries. Monday, I go in, boys, I'm gonna pound the. I'm gonna pound the weights. I'm gonna work out with the young bucks. I'm an athlete now.
Biz Nunez
I'm cocky. Get out the anxiety from all I've.
Army Armstrong
Been working out, though. I'm gaining momentum.
Yancey Thigpen
I've still got a boiler, though.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, I know, but I'm like, give me those things. I grabbed these dumbbells. I'm doing dumbbell step ups onto this box. Like, one, down, two, switch legs, you know? Three other leg, four, boom. Hammy buckle down. Lauren's like, what are you doing? Why would. Because I convinced him that I can do it. Boys, can I show you this bruise?
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah, yeah.
Biz Nunez
Let me see it. Oh, yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
Sometimes when the groin contact bruise. Oh, wow. You sure that isn't from the Boghossian crash?
Army Armstrong
Buddy? That's right in the underbelly of the hamstring. Right there. Just buckled me. I. I spent a whole day mind myself. Like, I'm done. I can't walk. What the. Laying in bed. Got up the next morning, so high and low.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah.
Army Armstrong
Oh, yeah.
Biz Nunez
You are the. You are.
Army Armstrong
It's like a hike. It's like a hike. It's like a hike.
Yancey Thigpen
You're boozing. And the jet ski accident. You must have been down in the dumps on that.
Biz Nunez
How many times has. Has Mel had to take your shoelaces away?
Army Armstrong
Oh, buddy, she's like my psychiatrist. She. She knows how I operate.
Biz Nunez
She's Your nose. She does it all.
Army Armstrong
She's my. I need her.
Yancey Thigpen
Like, if the kids are like, dad, oh, she left in the ball. Curled in a ball, the fetal position again. Crying because he's hungover.
Army Armstrong
I couldn't even like, be like, I don't even know where my money is. I don't know where my bank account.
Biz Nunez
You might just get arrested on purpose so you can live in a cell.
Army Armstrong
Because it'll be one of those guys, provider. You would bail me out. It'd be on YouTube video of you bailing me out, me coming. Oh, like you leave me in there. I have nothing.
Cal Clutterbuck
I have nothing.
Biz Nunez
Army living at tent city because he can't fend for himself. He's like, I don't know how to use my debit card.
Yancey Thigpen
Only guy ever to volunteer to go there.
Biz Nunez
So army, like you talked about going with the weights. Like, even, like, me, I'm training. Like, most days I'm going to this place called the Yard. My buddy Cumby owns it here in Vancouver. I'm doing a lot of this. Like, even like, like if you're doing step ups, you put the resistant band on the Smith machine where you switch both ways. Where you're, you're, you're like resisting to where you're trying to pull in more. So you're working your adductor and then you switch it around the other side where maybe it's a little bit more like glute outer, outer quad and outer leg. So it's, it's not so much like heavy weights anymore where it's just more turning things on. And when you're doing it body weight and you're doing it slow, I don't know, I find like, I just get just as much benefit. And you're not. Like, even Sid, when he used to work out, he hated the feeling of being sore. So he's not doing a lot of stuff that'll make him be like, like, you know, need to get on the massage table for three days in a row. Although he does.
Army Armstrong
I remember Sid, like, we'd go in the gym and like, we'd be working out at the old Melon arena and we're all doing like, you know, Gary Roberts workouts. And, and I see him, he's laying on like a bench and he's just doing, doing like the old hip opener moves. Just loosening the hips up. Like he was ahead of the game. Yeah, he was. He really was. I'm not doing like what you're doing. You're more advanced. When I was at witt's house and I crashed at his place.
Yancey Thigpen
That's your style.
Army Armstrong
At the start of the summer, I saw you doing, like, ab ball, like, dead bug things. And like, I'm doing Dad. Static lifting light, but good form all the way down. Slow timing things. I. I got cocky. I thought it was an athlete. I went. I tried to push it. Hamstring salute. But I woke up the next day, boys, and I, not thinking. I got up to go for the old morning pee, wheeled in there. After I was done, I was walking back to bed and I was like, whoa, fuck. My hamstring doesn't even hurt. What the hell happened? I was like, healed. I was healed. And I continued working out. I went for hikes and everything.
Yancey Thigpen
I don't know the guy where, like, they had to come out with the trainer. You left the game, they're like, he's out. And then the next night you were.
Army Armstrong
Buzzing around Paul Pierce, buddy. I was out four to six weeks. I was out four to six weeks once in Pittsburgh, and they said, I can't come back and play without a knee brace. It was after I blasted Saku Koivu. Then Surrey jumped me and I tweaked my knee and. And I. I missed the next game in Montreal and, like, people hated me. They wanted to kill me. And I. I got the brace and I skated. I can remember I came into the training room like, I'm good. I don't need to wear the brace. I was doing like, knee wobbly things. Like, hey, look at this. Look at the flexion. I'm not. No pain, nothing. Because I didn't want to wear that brace. And I. They said, yeah, okay, you're good. Go for it. I'm a weapon, man. I heal it with my brain. I heal it with my mind, boys. I heal it with my mind. The things part, the ups and downs, it's all a process.
Biz Nunez
Since you brought it up with the hiking, I am doing our. We did the pilot of Peaking with Donnie and. And Corey. We're going to be filming our first season of it in bc. We're going to do the mainland, which is here. We're gonna do the gross grind. Then we're gonna go to Whistler and do a bunch of stuff, maybe even Stop and Squamish along the way. And then we're also gonna head over to the island and hit up either one or two hikes there, as well as head to a place called Tofino. So throughout the. Throughout the course of these seasons, we are going to introduce more and more guests. So once we head out east near you army, I don't know. What are the appellations?
Army Armstrong
Longest hike. What's the longest hike you guys go on? Like I, I've been. Now I'm looking at this. Some guys, there's like 14 hour hike on some of these places.
Biz Nunez
You could do the, the, the John Muir Trail. Or I think I might be saying it wrong, where it's a seven day where you gotta set up camp. Seven, seven times.
Army Armstrong
There's one of those here. There's a trail here to Washington and it's apparently like an old trail that you can do. And you can do that. It takes days to do it though. You got, you can hike this whole thing.
Biz Nunez
So I'm 100 at one point gonn Earth roamers. And I'm going to be doing every single national park in North America and then eventually head down to South America. Like I'm going on an excursion that would probably be my, like my retirement gift is go on all these crazy excursions. But what I was saying though is, is we are, I think we're going to do one overnighter this trip. That'll be the first time we've obviously done it with the peaking series.
Yancey Thigpen
But on your own. No electricity, nothing.
Army Armstrong
No sleeping bag rolled up with like a little Bunsen burner cooking up like a little tuna thing.
Cal Clutterbuck
Wow.
Biz Nunez
Bingo. We're gonna do it.
Yancey Thigpen
What if there's bears around?
Cal Clutterbuck
Like how there are bears around.
Yancey Thigpen
It's got no gun.
Biz Nunez
I'll judo chop that. I'll tap that bear out, say my name.
Yancey Thigpen
This is not like six Irish travelers. You've seen the size of these paws. This thing would just eat you up.
Biz Nunez
I've studied the Revenant where Leo gets in the battle, and I know exactly what he did wrong. So I know what to do right? Including bear sprites right to the yap and then hit him with the jugular.
Army Armstrong
You know what you could do? You could do like Liam Neeson in that wolf movie. You can have all those pink Whitney little nips and you break them and you can put them between your knuckles at the end of the movie, Remember, he's getting surrounded by the wolves.
Yancey Thigpen
I thought you say get him loaded, like give him the pink Whitney crushed.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Do you think Donnie hung over the next day?
Yancey Thigpen
You're like, oh, I got him.
Biz Nunez
Oh, fuck that pig Whitney kicked me in the dick.
Yancey Thigpen
Pig Whitney saved my life, Joins a sorority.
Army Armstrong
He's just in the corner. Diarrhea.
Biz Nunez
He's rubbing his blood on the floor.
Army Armstrong
On the Forest floor. He just like.
Yancey Thigpen
So that'll be filmed in the next few weeks here.
Army Armstrong
Is Donnie gonna. What's the time for Donnie on this gross grind wit.
Biz Nunez
Okay.
Yancey Thigpen
I've never done it.
Biz Nunez
So I. I've done it three times so far this summer. I did.
Army Armstrong
What's your time?
Cal Clutterbuck
Four.
Army Armstrong
Yeah.
Biz Nunez
Then 57. I was a little tired that day and then just matched my time of 54. I've been getting a lot of needling and work done. I did a. I did three hours of stretching yesterday. I felt unreal in the gym this morning. I think I can crack the 50 minute mark. I would be shocked because Donnie. I don't think Donnie's doing a lot on his own.
Army Armstrong
He like.
Biz Nunez
But he'll, you know, go and do whatever. I would be shocked if he broke an hour.
Army Armstrong
I think Donnie like me on a jet ski cruising and looking at the houses is the way that he. I picture him hiking. I don't think.
Biz Nunez
Like not with this gross grind. Man. It's a kick in the game.
Yancey Thigpen
You can't just do it slow. Like he. He'll. He'll do it with a cigarette in.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah.
Army Armstrong
What's a. He's gonna be over an hour saying.
Yancey Thigpen
It'S almost too steep to just like take your time.
Army Armstrong
Stairs.
Biz Nunez
It's. You're doing lunges either way the whole time. You're doing step up lunges. Like army blown out his hamstring. So I'd be shocked if he didn't have a hammy looking like armies by the time it's all said and done. And also that part of the episode. It's for time. Like we're doing the grouse grind for time. So I always get a bunch of tweets and messages about it when I. When I mention it on here. But there was one other thing I was going to ask army though.
Cal Clutterbuck
God. Oh.
Biz Nunez
So how old is Cruz now?
Army Armstrong
15. Just turned 15 in June. So he's. Yeah. So summer. Like I had to take him back. He's going to Mount St. Charles again.
Biz Nunez
Same place as last year. Right?
Army Armstrong
Same place. You'll start out the season there though. It'll be great. Get into school on. On. On. On Saturday at first practice with his team on Sunday. School starts on Monday. On Tuesday. Rip them out of school. Adios. We're going to Seattle Thunderbirds camp at the Western Hockey League out west, baby. Let's go first. Or like I don't think they have a rookie camp. I think they just have the camp.
Yancey Thigpen
That'S main training camp. He's going To.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, I think that's how they do it in Seattle. If he, they have a rookie game, if he's good enough. I'm not sure if a lot of kids his age will be introduced into this game. It's like a rookie game they play against the Everett Silver Tips on, on the Tuesday. We'll see if he plays good enough or he warrants army.
Biz Nunez
What are you telling him before that game? Are you saying put the foil on, let's go?
Army Armstrong
Yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
Like, have some hockey iq, right?
Army Armstrong
Like, well, yeah, yeah. I'm just all about like creating time and space, like setting yourself up, pulling guys around, like that kind of smart stuff that I'm working on, like really trying to work with him on. He, he worked his ass off this summer. I give him a ton of credit. And in the gym, on the ice. Went with my brother in Philly for the month of July on ice, off ice, every day. So it's, he's, he's worked his butt off. So I'm, I'm proud of him. I'm pumped for him. Hope it, I hope it breeds like confidence with him and his game and, and gets things going. So we'll see what happens this year.
Biz Nunez
Well, I would imagine he was skating with older guys there and, and I like to like ask you about these things, right, Because Ryder isn't quite there and Wyatt, they're still younger. At what point did you start really introducing a lot of the summer training? Like is. He's going five days a week. Like how, how heavy are the weights? Like as a parent, where do you decipher, like when to be like, hey buddy, it's time to ramp it up if you, if you want to play with the big boys.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, well, I don't know, like Whit, you don't know you, this is your first time with your kids, right? And then you just know what you kind of know too, a little bit obviously.
Biz Nunez
But I know kids are so young, they're not trucking.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah. But so from like, you know, like friends with kids cruise his age and stuff, that what I did and what I know, it just doesn't really happen anymore. I think now kids are way younger. Hopefully you're doing body weight, but I'm talking like, I'm sure there's like 10 year olds that are like doing, you know, push ups, sit ups, probably going to a trainer, working body weight, band stipe type stuff where when we were growing up it was like, hey, do some push ups, like shoot some pucks. It wasn't, I think you're the, the way you're taking care of your body now and is changing with younger kids too.
Army Armstrong
Oh yeah. Like, I don't, I didn't know some of the stuff like forever we were told kind of like don't lift weights when you're young. It stunts your growth. Do you ever remember hearing that when you were like.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, I, I think I started around like 12 or 13, but really before that, I don't. Yeah, I was, I started twin. I think I was doing all the power cleaning stuff too at a, at a fairly young age. Like, I feel like that's young to, to start all that stuff. But when did crew start lifting weights and last summer. Is that, is that the stunt, the growth thing?
Army Armstrong
I think so. I think there's like better science on everything now on training and how to do it and proper weights and movements for young kids. I think a big thing with young kids guys is like, the biggest thing is I, I don't quote me on this, but I think there's a study out on like hockey players and their hips and the unnatural movement of skating that is really bad for your hips. It's really hard on your hips and like.
Biz Nunez
And why it's important to get away from it in the summer.
Army Armstrong
Yes. Do other sports and, and do other sports and strength and don't. You can't skate every day. It's not like healthy for your body to be in that unnatural pushing out stride position on your hips to be twerking like that. So it's, you know, like this stuff is starting to come out on, on, on, on training and, and younger kids and what, what's valuable and what isn't and you know, the longest. The biggest thing is like summer tournaments every weekend. That was like the biggest thing for the last like four years. Who's going? Who's going? And I'm like, Cruz, don't do that. Like, let's just do skit. Let's just do. Get some ice. We'll do some skills. You could get skates in. We can get buddies out there. We just go out on a pickup time and just play. Just like that. Free time to play too. Everything's so structured. So stay away from that stuff but like train. So this year he trained like literally five days a week. Like, like a. He was like a pro. He did like a pro this summer. I give him a ton of credit. He put a ton of work in. It was a lot of time and I was in there too.
Yancey Thigpen
Handle it.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Now I seen him do it. He did it on his own. He pushed himself in there with some older kids too, here in Pittsburgh when he was back. But like, it was, it was great seeing him take these strides and build confidence that way. So great summer for him and I'm pumped to have him back there. I can't wait to see the, go back to the dub, you know, getting out in Seattle. Can't wait to get out there, check it out. Probably got some great trails out in the Seattle area, and it's nice that.
Biz Nunez
He'S familiar with the school he's at too. I feel like last year was a bit of a whirlwind when you, you, you switched him out, right? So it was a crazy transition and, and at the start of the year. So now he's going to be the, the Wiley veteran. And, but, but he, he can't make no Western League team, right?
Army Armstrong
No, he can't make it. He's only 15, so he'll come back. So he's got, that, he's just got to get his, have a good season this year, get better and you know, start to stack, stack months on top of months this year and get better and better as the year keeps going and, but yeah, that, like, you know, I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm just as like a dad, like a hockey dad, like, proud of the, see the work he put in. I'm like, dude, I never did this. When I was, when I was 14, 15, I, I was juggling golf balls in the backyard.
Yancey Thigpen
Next morning I was, I was training.
Biz Nunez
I was going five days a week. When I was that age, I didn't train at all. I was driving my mom's Ford Temple to Niagara Falls, and I was, I was training with a guy named Jason McLean who was an Olympic lifter, if.
Yancey Thigpen
You had your license.
Biz Nunez
No, I think, okay, so you're right. So I, I think at 15 you get your beginners, and then 16, you're, you're on your own. But yeah, I'm, I mean, between my, my mom driving me at a younger age and then eventually my own, it was, yeah, the, the old 4 tempo would take it all the way to Naples.
Army Armstrong
You know, when I really creatine, I.
Biz Nunez
Was taking protein at that age. I don't think I knew what creatine was at that age.
Yancey Thigpen
Did you see the golfer on, on, on Sunday at the BMW Championship? Ben Griffin? He, he started his round triple double bogey, and then he went on to shoot seven under the rest of the round. So shot one under par after that start, and they Asked about the start and he's like, yeah, this is kind of crazy, but I, I, I overdosed on creatine.
Biz Nunez
When you I was too much. You could feel a little bit weird. Kind of like when you take zinc. If you take zinc without eating a meal first, you feel almost nauseous. So yeah, sometimes when I take my supplements and I don't have enough in my, my system, it'll you up. Like I, I do creatine twice a day. Five. Five. Five grams or five.
Army Armstrong
I used to get that feeling with in the mindsee's when I was crushing suties before they.
Yancey Thigpen
No wonder they ban those things.
Army Armstrong
I'd be like this on the bench.
Biz Nunez
Oh yeah. That was, I mean three and three. What do you expect?
Army Armstrong
I mean they're like, arby, you're up. I'm like, okay.
Yancey Thigpen
Immediately run someone through the board.
Army Armstrong
Penalty.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah.
Biz Nunez
Elbow to the jaw.
Yancey Thigpen
Punch the guy in empty box and open the door.
Army Armstrong
They're like, army, you're going the wrong way. I'm just flying.
Biz Nunez
Oh, so through the Zamboni door.
Yancey Thigpen
Won't be out for a while and and would would never really give away kind of what happened. But this Internet invitation.
Cal Clutterbuck
Incredible is.
Biz Nunez
It was incredible.
Yancey Thigpen
It was. Yeah. It's going to be pretty ridiculous I think once you see all the storylines that ended up happening. The area, this big cedar lodge in the Ozarks blown away.
Army Armstrong
You didn't know what you were getting into. Hey, Disneyland. Really?
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, dude. They own 45, 000 acres and they have I think four main courses, two different par threes. They're building a putting course. You're overlooking the Ozarks. First night they got, they got the guy out playing the bagpipes. Guy played the bagpipes for like 50 minutes. The sun was way up and I was like, oh, it's listed at the beginning. I was like, I wonder how long he's playing. Yance is like, he's going till that sun hits the hor. I was like, no. And sure this guy did. I, I don't know how he's breathing this long playing it but it was.
Army Armstrong
Just like would you move there? It was, it was, was it that nice? Like you would consider like moving there? I just get a place there.
Yancey Thigpen
No, I wouldn't move but I would go there with, with buddies or bring your family there. Any, any year.
Army Armstrong
Every Boys, boys. I've never been on a boys like a golf trip. I hear guys going on golf trips all the time.
Biz Nunez
I'm not the biggest golf guy. So doing 36 a day for three.
Army Armstrong
Go for a nice dinner, Biz. Go for a nice dinner.
Biz Nunez
You know, but if that's your jam, this is one of the places that you need to go. And Whit talked about it. So the part of the 45 acres where majority of the courses are, you can't see the lake. I didn't realize the lake, if you walked the perimeter of it, it's bigger than the, the, the coast of California. Like it's more. I, I didn't, I didn't realize how big that that lake was. Is it called Lake Ozark?
Yancey Thigpen
I have no idea. But I said that to Portnoy on the, on the ride home. He's like, I guess every single guy from Chiclets is going to tell me this fact about the. I'm like, you're such a brick. He's like, you just told me, Keith told me. Now you're telling me. How amazed are you that the.
Biz Nunez
I didn't realize how big the lake was. But, but they, they like with dynamite, they blow out the rock and they're creating this mini putt course where you can overlook the point of the lake where it's just like. Imagine where the gu.
Army Armstrong
Like Tiger Woods. Is it like a Tiger woods video game looking type of thing?
Yancey Thigpen
He designed one of the courses there, Payne Valley and like named after Payne Stewart. Yeah. This place is just unreal. But great weekend. But this kid. Can I tell you, Biz, what this guy pulled the act. This guy pulled in the. So we were in a cabin. We get in there both. Both rooms have two beds. So somebody gets their own room.
Biz Nunez
So we drew tease.
Yancey Thigpen
Biz is like, I'll room with the guy who loses. Like I'm. I don't want my own room. So I lose. Yan's gets its own room. So we're up the first night, we're hanging out. Finally, you know, like one o', clock, we're like, all right, let's shut her down. We're just sitting there, hot stove and having a great night. Now Biz, he doesn't drink. Crushes waters, but doesn't drink. I wake up at, I think my alarm was set for like 6:30 because we had to be mic'd up at 8am or something. And he's not in his bed. I'm like, oh, he's up early. Stretching. This guy's stretching. This guy 24 7. He stretches his dick off all day long.
Biz Nunez
And I'm the tightest human on the planet.
Yancey Thigpen
And he's still tight as a drunk.
Army Armstrong
Like anywhere. Like, like Any place on earth. Like, he's walking.
Biz Nunez
I've been overdosing on magnesium, so I'm gonna be taking care of that.
Yancey Thigpen
It would be like a guy who played like golf all day every day and couldn't get a driver off the ground. It's like, dude, you. All you do is stretch and you're this. But I'm figuring he's in the. He's in the common room, like kitchen area, stretching. I go out there, he's not in there. I'm like, where'd this guy go? I hop in the shower. I think it's like 6:50. I knock on there on Keith's door and they. I kind of open the door, like, what's up? Keith's on his phone. It's dark in there. I'm like, biz, how'd you end up in here? Right away I'm thinking that like I passed out. And then they were like, oh, we don't want to go to bed yet. And they went in there. I'm like, what I missed this is you guys hot stove. After I went to sleep, Keith goes, no, he hosed the bed. I'm like, I'm like, pardon? Biz is like, yep, hose the bed. And I did it last night too. This is the second night. I said, wait, wait, wait. I said, you're dead sober. He's like, I've been having this dream lately. It's bad news. Can you tell the dream what and explain to the listeners. This is bad how dead sober. You're hoes in the bed as a 40 year old man.
Army Armstrong
Holy shit.
Yancey Thigpen
Two nights in a row.
Biz Nunez
So before I, before I get into it both nights because I was so tired from like not only the travel, but the golfing, being out in like the hot humidity. Like these were long days. So I was fully gassed where when I was sleeping, I was. I was hitting my REM cycle. Like I was fully, fully, fully out.
Yancey Thigpen
Okay.
Biz Nunez
So that I'm not using that as.
Army Armstrong
An excuse like every human.
Yancey Thigpen
I like it, but keep going.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, no, you guys know when you're in that deep, deep sleep. So I get this dream and the first night I did it, but when I started doing it, I woke up right away. So it's. It only got like, like, you know, a little layer so I could throw a towel down and going to disrupt. So I stayed in the room or whatever. But I get this dream where I go up to the urinal and I'm like trying to piss, trying to piss, trying to piss, trying to piss. And Then finally it's like, ah, yeah. And then obviously you wake up and you're like, I'm hosing the bed.
Army Armstrong
And maybe you're not that deep. Maybe you're actually not that deep asleep.
Yancey Thigpen
He. I would hope to.
Biz Nunez
The second night I was obviously because I got about 98, 0.6% of the piss out and then finished it off in the other 1.4 in the bathroom and then made my way over to Keith's room. Because I knew at that point, like I obviously touched the bed around it and it was no army.
Yancey Thigpen
It was like someone.
Biz Nunez
You might as well throw the mattress.
Yancey Thigpen
It was like a wave came crashing through and only got his bed, not my bed.
Biz Nunez
But the thing is though is like for, for people listening. And I think that we get over half a million listeners to this podcast who now know that I'm a. A bedwetter. By the way, Shane Doane actually calls. Every time I call him, he calls me a bedwetter. He's like, what's up, bedwetter? So he's bang on. He was ahead of the curve. But I'm not embarrassed.
Yancey Thigpen
It's just like because what are you supposed. And that goes to my question. What are you supposed to do? Like, I don't know. I don't. You're. Because if. If you were crippled, it's like buckle and you're pissed in the bed. It's like, I gotta stop drinking. I gotta figure this out. But being dead sober and stretching 18 hours a day, what are you supposed to do?
Biz Nunez
I don't know. That's a question for our fans and.
Army Armstrong
Maybe some docs psychological thing. Like when you're. There's gotta be a. Like there's meanings behind your dreams. And when you're deep sleep like that, you remember your dreams. I haven't remembered a dream since I was like 12 years old. I don't think. Think I've tried. I've hung on like I'm in a sick.
Biz Nunez
You gotta write them down when you wake up right away and I've been.
Army Armstrong
Like, don't wake up. This is. I'm in. I'm in. I'm in the perfect spot. And then poof, I wake up. And then poof, I forget about it. Like, I'm like, okay, here I am.
Biz Nunez
A dad in black. Yeah, she's got like a God time.
Yancey Thigpen
To go on a hike again.
Army Armstrong
But you remember this. You remember this dream.
Biz Nunez
The good news is though, is, is. Is we have a, a co presenting sponsor that we're adding the pens for Men's. Yeah. I reached out, we did a call.
Yancey Thigpen
That he, he, he goes, he'll buy diaper like a. Depends. Depends deal out of this. I also texted Yance. I said, hey, what happened when he came in the room? He goes, he turned on the light. He started making so much goddamn noise. I was flipping out, but I wasn't really pissed. He was just dying, laughing. I couldn't believe it. It looked like Yankee stadium in there, how much light he put on. So he came in and just blasted it. Walking around making noise like, you're probably like, what the. Bringing out his underwear.
Biz Nunez
I was just more of like, like, like. Well, I gotta tell the boys, obviously, because he's gonna wonder why I'm not in this room. And I. I'm not gonna lie to the boys. What do you got for me, G?
Cal Clutterbuck
Wouldn't it simple. So like, Whit asked what you do? Like, wouldn't a simple solution just be like not chugging three waters right before you go to bed? I feel like that's like, I actually.
Yancey Thigpen
Get your best hydrations a day. You said, I drink so much.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, I drink. I drink a lot of water. I think that I. And it was hard because the sodium packs were throwing me off where I think that that was part to blame with the gout, where I was going overboard on it. So I would definitely say I need to slow down my water consumption, G. And I agree. I gotta cut myself off at a certain point now I've really honed back on the weed, which makes me a little bit parched. And that's why I'm always trying to wet my whistle because my mouth's dry from smoking. But. But I have definitely toned it back on. On my cannabis consumption as well. So hopefully with all of that makes me not.
Army Armstrong
You're like a healthy guy. Great point by G. Just lay off the water. Like, this is like drinking, right? Stop drinking. Yeah, stop drinking water. You ever think about like just putting one of those clothesline clips on the end of your horn?
Biz Nunez
I. I like doing the grenade pisses in the shower because I got the big foursy just tire in a knot. That would be a good idea. That would be. I would honestly, if. If depends me, I would wear a diaper to bed every night if they.
Army Armstrong
Can you imagine if I go into the like store, I'm wheeling down and there's biz with an ass looking over like he's looking over the back shot with a big diaper ass ripping on the front of the Pampers fucking bag.
Yancey Thigpen
All of a sudden like the Chiclets, Pampers. I'm like, dude, we got into the diaper game, the adult diaper game. He's.
Army Armstrong
He's looking over his shoulder and all you see is a diaper ass. His like, his like coy smile like that. He does. He's like this and, and a Halloween themed arm sleeve tattoo.
Yancey Thigpen
He's like, I got equity in this company, bro.
Army Armstrong
Look at the gel, the gel packets.
Yancey Thigpen
Speaking at the Bedwetters Union next month in Saginaw. We got this deal lined up.
Army Armstrong
Listen, I'm five years down the road.
Biz Nunez
I'll have just as many people in my DMs as I did over the Dubai chocolate who are in support of me. So I appreciate.
Yancey Thigpen
I saw that.
Biz Nunez
I appreciate. I'm sure you've gotten a few too. I appreciate the support and I knew it was factual. And I, I've talked to a lot of people who have had girlfriends go over to Dubai and have said they've been propositioned to do the same thing. I've had numerous amounts of people reach out to confirm my story was true. Last pod. So thank you to the you'd buy chocolate business.
Army Armstrong
This is a slap chop guy. But for male diapers. This is unbelievable. This is unbelievable.
Biz Nunez
I do have a few other things.
Army Armstrong
You see these nuts.
Biz Nunez
And by the way, we're going to be getting Cal Clutterbuck on. Former New York Islander.
Yancey Thigpen
Awesome.
Biz Nunez
Also Minnesota Wild. Unreal interview. Grew up with Clutterbuck. I, I trained with him. Coming up with our boy Stacy. Unbelievable guy. Unbelievable career. Over a thousand games and very much like a Konopka interview. Just like great stories and, and a nice throwback, which we've been on a bit of a roll here. I mean we had the Boston Bruins head coach, we had a Hall of Famer Henley. Henrik Lundquist, probably in the Chiclets hall of Fame at this point. Zena Konopka, Army. I don't know if you listen to that one.
Army Armstrong
He was so good. It was. You guys just stopped the interview. I wanted him to keep going. You got to get him on again. Oh, you gotta get him on again.
Yancey Thigpen
Come Regular Schaefer.
Army Armstrong
First overall pick you guys had on Pierre Turjon. I love those stories from Pierre Turgeon. The Patrick Wasp. That was my childhood growing up a Habs fan. Patty Wand's awesome.
Yancey Thigpen
I don't know if Fish did it or Fishy. That that was so good. It was longer one too. You know, the Instagram clips usually around a minute or so. I think this was four or five minutes. But it was the story about when he knew that WA had had enough and it was all coming to an end. I had completely forgotten, until I watched the clip, that the coach was the radio guy. What was his name again? That they hired Biz. And they had been. They had played together, too. It was just like. Like a great story. And. And I think we mentioned how grateful Pierre Turjon was for just his career. He loves hockey, so that was awesome. Yeah. And Clutterbuck was great. Clutterbuck is, like, apparently one of the top hockey playing golfers, and so he wants action in a sandbagger. We got to set that up for sure.
Army Armstrong
How much money did Clutterbuck make? How much money did he make?
Biz Nunez
I bet you made 40, 50 million.
Army Armstrong
50.
Yancey Thigpen
Made a lot.
Army Armstrong
I know this is one thing I always say about Clutterbuck. If you go into a Go in your hockey dressing room, if you have kids and ask all the kids, who wants to be Connor McDavid, they'll all put their hands up. If you ask, hey, who wants to be Cal Clutterbuck? Like, none of them will put their hands up. Like, you don't like $50 million? You don't like 50 mil? No way. Did that just happen.
Yancey Thigpen
He got it the hard way. I mean, he was grinding. Everyone hated to play against him, running around. He was great.
Army Armstrong
40, 37. Just shy of 38 mil.
Cal Clutterbuck
Career.
Biz Nunez
Not enough Cal Clutterbucks out there, ladies and gentlemen. I agree with you, Army. That's a great example.
Army Armstrong
Great job to have.
Yancey Thigpen
Should we throw it to him now, you think?
Biz Nunez
Guys, I was just gonna bring up a few other things here quickly. Did you guys see that? The UFC deal?
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah. So that was the first time I've seen. I mean, maybe I'm wrong, but I enormous, like, TV deal announcements that has actually made fans completely fired up for it. Like, the fans were celebrating that in terms of all the money they're spending on pay per view. And now Paramount. Plus, you get it. You get every fight. The pay per views are done. Do you ever remember seeing fans that excited about, like, a new TV deal within a sport they like?
Biz Nunez
I'm. I'm not even the hugest UFC fan. Like, once in a while where, when there's a big one, I'll find a way to either go to a bar and watch it maybe, or go over to a friend's place, but. But, like, it's such a growing sport, and now that it's become mainstream, I feel like it's gonna skyrocket. I'm fired up because I Want to see these guys scrap? Like, it's something I don't mind watching sometimes when they're gruesome or like when a guy kicks a guy and his leg breaks and it's like flopping around.
Yancey Thigpen
Not great at watching that.
Biz Nunez
Or, or when guys get knocked out real bad and there, there's like a guy that gets his eye gouged out. Some of it can get pretty gnarly, but. But I'm pretty fired up for this. This is a. I believe it's a seven year deal at 1.1 billion per year. So this is a.
Yancey Thigpen
Where do you stand on these guys making a little bit more dough?
Biz Nunez
Okay, so that's a non negotiable. Like, I respect everything that Dana White's done, but just like when the NHL had its lockout and then you came back and then league minimum was getting bumped up, I believe league minimum now is like close to a million, isn't it like 800-850-or something, maybe?
Army Armstrong
I think in the new CBA, they bumped the bottom up to a million. Perfect, I think. And that was a game notes thing that I, that me and Merle's kind of said, hey, you gotta bump the bottom up too if you're gonna raise the top, bump the bottom up for the.
Biz Nunez
I feel like you and Merle's and Merle specifically have, have been bumping not only that, but the, the health insurance for former players for a long time. So. Which is something else they did with the new CBA where there's a fund now. I was just talking to Glenn Healey the other day actually, so he's fired up for it. But like, when you're talking bottom of the barrel treatment, like some of these guys in ufc, it's brutal. Like they'll go there, get their leg broken, and they'll never fight again. And they made like 50 grand. And by the time you pay your trainer, your, your travel and everything else, like, you're basically in, in the red.
Army Armstrong
How do you do comparables and like, how do you get like, you know, say I'm fighting you biz and like you're like a main event guy. Like, how do they. It's all pay per view. That's how they weigh. Like the hype machine to like wondering the same thing.
Yancey Thigpen
Or is it more of an issue with. There's just so many people that they have to choose from. Right. Like, obviously there's some incredible world class fighters, but like, in what world would people not be trying to become UFC fighters, even though they're Underpaid, you know what I'm saying? Like, the option for Dana White and ufc, there's just so many people they could choose from, right? Like, you're not going to. You're not going to see anyone just stop fighting because they're not getting paid enough.
Cal Clutterbuck
Right.
Biz Nunez
But I also feel that the. With more money coming into play, they'll have better resources to train. And now even more and more people will want to get into it if that bottom line keeps coming up, especially at the fact that you don't have to. You don't have to buy hockey equipment, you don't have to.
Yancey Thigpen
Like, you.
Biz Nunez
You go to. You go to, like, I bet you the, like, the amount of people signing up for karate, jiu jitsu, and all those types of things is just skyrocketing as it is, because the. Because it's a great, like, mental escape as well, as well as physical. But I think that that is. It's a. It's a good thing for the overall. And like you said, the bottom line will definitely come up. And if it doesn't, I mean, I have a lot of respect for Dana White and what he's done, but if he doesn't move that needle, that's a tough look. I mean, you just made $7.7 billion on this deal, and, and your sport's going to grow and get more eyeballs, and you don't have to really worry about the only other flip side. No, there's no way there. It's like every man for themselves.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, it's every man for themselves. Like, you don't go into a negotiation. It's all just a negotiation at the end of it, right? Like what you're gonna make for the fight, or you just take the fight and say, fuck it, I want to fight that guy on the big card.
Biz Nunez
Yeah. The big question mark now is. Is like, how are, like a guy like Conor McGregor, right? Regardless of where he is and how much coke he's snorting up his nose, people want to see him fight again. But he's probably worth between 500 and a billion now. How are you going to entice him to get back in the ring? I would assume that with that money that they're being paid from Paramount, you're going to have to offer him 30, 40 million off the hop in order to just get them. It's not like all of a sudden before they would negotiate part of the pay per view, so there's no doing that anymore. So you. You have to kind of take, take, take what you're being paid of the 1.1 per year and figure out how are we going to divvy this up so that. That's going to be the challenge. But regardless, a monumental contract and deal for Dana White in the ufc, and everybody gets to watch it for free now, which is huge. The other thing I had written down is. You guys see this Justin Bieber impersonator?
Army Armstrong
No. No.
Biz Nunez
So, like, this Justin Bieber and person.
Army Armstrong
It'S been on my social media a lot more, though. Is it a personator, though? I don't know.
Biz Nunez
He's buzzing right now. His new album's like every girl that when they post an Instagram photo, they got either Daisies or UConn planned. So he's got about four or five solid bangers on the the album. So good for him. And there was a lot of rumors about how he'd lost his mind and lost his money and all this. But one funny thing is this Justin Bieber impersonator, I don't know if he like, emailed the win and said, hey, I want to get paid, you know, half a million bucks. I'm going to come in, perform at the Day club. Well, next thing you know, this Justin Bieber impersonators performing at the Win Day Club, where they never flagged them.
Army Armstrong
Does it look exactly.
Yancey Thigpen
Whoever. Whoever was the final decision maker on that not being like, wait, Justin Bieber is not coming here? Like, what? Like who? It's like, if that was actually him, it.
Biz Nunez
It's bad. I don't know. I'm sure. GG have you seen the video? How much would you say it looks like I'm out of.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, how much it actually. I'd say 1 through 10. I would. I would give it a. An 8.
Army Armstrong
It actually, like, he has like, all. He's got the max tattoos.
Cal Clutterbuck
He's like, like hunched over, like, the way Bieber does.
Yancey Thigpen
Send this to me, G. It's a dark nightclub.
Cal Clutterbuck
It was that excess at the Win. It's just.
Army Armstrong
That's just a tough look. So he came in and he was like, singing. How did he sound? How was the singing? Oh, yeah, look at that.
Cal Clutterbuck
It looks just like him, the way.
Biz Nunez
He'S dressed and maybe a little fatter.
Army Armstrong
Punchover thing going crowd.
Yancey Thigpen
There's a couple people like, I don't think this is. He sounds off tonight and he's probably.
Army Armstrong
He's lip singing anyways. It's not like, Colby, you asked how he's singing. Like, he's just up there just like moving like him. No, he's that's not. That's brutal. That's about him. That's a bad move right there. That's. Is that what he does? Bieber doesn't.
Biz Nunez
No, he ain't doing that.
Army Armstrong
He doesn't do that. That's what I do. I do that. That's what I do.
Yancey Thigpen
Army's doing that at flowers party.
Army Armstrong
Do that.
Yancey Thigpen
I think it was.
Army Armstrong
Bogosian was singing.
Biz Nunez
I was doing Prigosian chopped his salad off. So I thought that that was pretty funny. I mean the win's no joke. It's not like you're going to some dumpy ass hotel.
Yancey Thigpen
So he just took a kind of a joke. Now they had a fake Justin Bieber performing piss.
Biz Nunez
I know it's with. At least he could have had this bucket hat on that would have.
Army Armstrong
Speaking of look alike. So before you move on to the next thing too. I can't wait to watch that video. But. But does the Boston Stranglers logo some people were saying I commented on like it looks badass. People are going, it looks like biz looks.
Biz Nunez
It's AI. It's AI generated garbage. If you root for the Boston Stranglers, you're a piece of. And the big deal selects are going to be dropping our jerseys in the next week or so.
Yancey Thigpen
So we're.
Biz Nunez
We're ready for Chiclets Cup. I know. Keith Y.
Yancey Thigpen
Any related in the jersey.
Biz Nunez
Here? I'm telling you, you trade Newfoundlander.
Yancey Thigpen
That could be a yes based on your reaction.
Biz Nunez
It's. Don't worry about it.
Yancey Thigpen
Get bed wetter.
Army Armstrong
The jerseys are yellow.
Yancey Thigpen
I can't.
Cal Clutterbuck
Laugh.
Biz Nunez
What I'm just. If anytime anybody chirps me that I'm just going to laugh and then I'm just going to hose my pants.
Army Armstrong
You should wear. You actually should wear those diapers during the the. During the Chiclets cup. And I could get a good stream in there and let the gel packets absorb. You'll have good hip protection.
Biz Nunez
Oh yeah. Going in the corners.
Army Armstrong
Yeah. Squish.
Biz Nunez
Protecting the puck with my stinky pee. Nobody's gonna come near me. I'm gonna be able to back that ass off.
Army Armstrong
Just a giant piss bomb diaper my kids used to get when they get real full with. Remember those diapers they can absorb a lot of pistol sticks but they. They balloon like a giant piss bomb.
Biz Nunez
The last thing I had was Sean Kingston. He's going to jail for three and a half years for. For fraud. Wire fraud. He was sending people fake wires to buy cars, jewelry, whatever it is. So as Jeff, I wonder in Those.
Yancey Thigpen
Cases, when you're sending, you know, money that is like, are you thinking you're just never getting caught or are you just like, oh, Whenever you're just in.
Army Armstrong
One, you're in so deep wet. I think you don't give a. You're like, oh, just keep it going. It's like a Ponzi scheme. It's like a personal Ponzi scheme.
Cal Clutterbuck
Scheme.
Yancey Thigpen
I know, it's nuts guy, the Ponzi scheme.
Army Armstrong
How do you do that, though? Do you write him a check? Is he just writing. But there's no money.
Biz Nunez
The Madoff thing, people were getting, like, fake reports.
Yancey Thigpen
So when you're Madoff being like the Ponzi guy, am I just gonna. I guess I'm just riding this thing till it ends. Like, the anxiety of that, like, just waiting and waiting.
Biz Nunez
I think that if you're doing that type of stuff like. Like that. That that element to your brain just, like, doesn't exist or it just doesn't turn on. Right. It would be like a guy who's got six different wives there. I read. I read a report recently. There was this guy who had, like, whatever, three, four separate families. Like, he all traveling for work again.
Army Armstrong
You're like a serial killer. You're like a serial killer kind of.
Yancey Thigpen
I don't know, mad at you. You're in one. You all of a sudden, all four of them are mad at you.
Army Armstrong
You're like, you don't give a though. You're just a robot. You're like, I don't care.
Yancey Thigpen
I don't think that guy cares.
Army Armstrong
What's she saying? Who's she? I don't know. It. You've been with her, I would think.
Yancey Thigpen
I'm going ring shopping for number five.
Biz Nunez
Yeah. I wouldn't put the wife hoarder on the same level as a serial killer, but, you know, I mean, close.
Yancey Thigpen
Kind of brain. Like the kind of, like, slightly sociopathic.
Army Armstrong
Yeah, I don't care. Like, go out murder someone. Like, go out get married when you already have a family and just go home the next day and eat a bowl of Cheerios. Like, oh, hey, what's up? Fucking not a big deal. Like, I'm not doing anything.
Cal Clutterbuck
Fucking rights.
Army Armstrong
You got to have some kind of fuck. You got to have, like, kind of similar, in a sense.
Biz Nunez
The lack of give a fuck meter is so high. It's. It's.
Yancey Thigpen
Hey, by the way, I would know.
Army Armstrong
How to be a serial killer.
Yancey Thigpen
USA Hockey. We won the Hlinka tournament. I think it's under 17. Not exactly sure. I Don't even know if we're sending our. Like we're not even sending the national team development program guys. We're sending the next best considered at that age by the USA Hockey Scouts. Canada sent their. Their all star team.
Biz Nunez
Here we go.
Army Armstrong
But all the guys you sent for that American team, a lot of them are. Are guys that play in the chl. Like that's why they're fucking studs.
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, I don't really care where they play. I just care that we beat you guys. And then we beat Sweden too and won it all. So USA Hog. It's been an. Now listen, the four nations, right? And Olympics coming up. You guys own me at the. At the top level. But we have a. We have a. A big list of. Of you know, U18, U20 things the past few years for USA starting to pile up.
Army Armstrong
I'll admit.
Yancey Thigpen
Starting to pile up that age.
Army Armstrong
This will be huge for the Olympics. Busy, busy. This is coming up.
Biz Nunez
So they had to move to the Halenka. Was Matthew and Brady playing in that.
Yancey Thigpen
Yance played in the Halinka. I'm pretty sure he took a slap shot and warm ups. Had a Russian kid and like hit him. Knocked him out of the game too. We gotta ask him.
Army Armstrong
Danz was a gangster back then. I talked to someone that played against someone. He was like 12 years old. He had a full beard and like he was like the intimidating like older kid with a mustache back then or something. Is that looked like rap photo.
Biz Nunez
Can we pull up Dan's draft photo?
Yancey Thigpen
No, it's. It's the one picture is Private Pile from. From. What's that movie?
Army Armstrong
Oh, Full Metal Jacket.
Yancey Thigpen
Full Metal Jacket. He has a Private Pile headshot with a phoenix coyote shirt.
Army Armstrong
I see that one.
Biz Nunez
Boys, this has been great catching up. Army.
Army Armstrong
Love you guys.
Biz Nunez
Part of the game notes crew. We're excited to get you guys back in action again next year, folks. Enjoy Cal Clutterbuck.
Yancey Thigpen
Clutterbuck time. Old school player, great storyteller. I can't wait till we do a little bit more with him, specifically with golf. And then even have him on these guys who've played in the game and played in the league up until right now. Those are the guys I'd love to chat with. Right? Especially once you hear him in the interview. Like, he's personable. He knows what he's talking about. Maybe we get him on once every month during the season. Once every two months. So let's throw him to him now. Great guy. Cal Clutterbuck.
Biz Nunez
Welland's finest.

Army Armstrong
I mean, they're drinking their faces off, but they're just crushing.
Yancey Thigpen
There was, like, no drama this week in that house.
Army Armstrong
Not much.
Yancey Thigpen
I mean, first week, you could say. Second week, I'm checking the clips. I'm just kind of like, all right.
Army Armstrong
But you know why?
Yancey Thigpen
They're all.
Army Armstrong
They're all.
Yancey Thigpen

Yancey Thigpen
Big time. Big time.
Biz Nunez
I was going to say when it's nice that, you know, you got your balls back from Lou's mason jar in his office. And the fact that you can come.
Yancey Thigpen
On and join Us to get a beard, got to not have to use clear tape on his socks anymore. It's a real win.
Cal Clutterbuck
It's all good, boys. We had some good years. We had some good years. Like, I know you guys hated it, but, you know, whatever it is.
Biz Nunez
What do you mean? We didn't hate it. We just hate when we got blackballed. Now, did you ever specifically have a conversation with Louise, like, listen, Cal, I.
Army Armstrong
Love you and I know you're from.
Biz Nunez
Welland and I know business from Welland, but we can't have you going on that rotten podcast.
Cal Clutterbuck
Never. It never even went that far. I just knew.
Biz Nunez
Okay, okay. Nice. Self awareness is good.
Cal Clutterbuck
You know, right away. You know, right away. Listen, I, I like, you know, I would have loved to do, to do it. I, I get it from both sides, you know, like, he's so. What you don't understand, like, if. Unless you play for him, like, what you don't get is like, it's, it's so good for, for you as a player. Like, you got nothing to worry about. And I don't. You know what I mean? Like, by all means, I could have came on here and said something really fucking dumb and then like, like, you know, it just, it just takes, it takes that all out of the equation. So I get it. And I get it from your perspective too, definitely. I think, you know, part of it and the change now is like the ownership group is looking to get the guys out there a little more. So you guys will have plenty of access to the guys moving forward, I'm sure.
Biz Nunez
So now to lose the fence and since you're, since we're already on the topic, like one of the most loyal human beings and as you said, kind of knew what was good for the team and keeping out all the, and just focusing on the task at hand, like, what was your relationship with them? And, and I mean, I'm sure you have owe a lot of your career to what he was able to establish in Long Island.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, well, when he first comes in, you never know, right? Like, you see him from the outside and you think like, oh man, this guy is going to be real difficult. Like, he's going to be in my face all the time. The rules are pretty simple. Like, you know, he's got, he's got a couple little rules here and there. And then again, like his model for running a team is what it is. Like he, he did it since like, I think 1987. You know, he started in September of 87. I was born in November of 87, so longer than I've been alive, he's been running teams. It's just the way he does it, man. You got to give the guy his flowers. He's been successful pretty well everywhere he goes. And so who the fuck am I for flying pigeon to challenge that guy at anything? So you. You follow the rules and. And things are great. You have great rel. I have a great relationship with him. He's just. He's a really great human being. He'll do anything for his players. And, like, as a player, that's really all you can ask for. And. And we really. And on top of that, we didn't have to deal with a lot of the stuff that, like, a lot of guys deal with. We didn't do appearances during the year. Like, we played hockey. We went home to our families and. And, you know, we lived our lives. And as long as you weren't. As long as you were a good guy, good human being, and a good teammate, like, you were fine.
Yancey Thigpen
So I love going back to the beginning. I mean, now you look. You made over 37 million playing. But talk about as a youngster, right from welland, you're two years younger than biz. When did you first kind of meet him or experience the whole business effect?
Cal Clutterbuck
Oh, God. So I actually don't remember the first time I met him, but I remember meeting him when he was, like, square, skinny, afroed out. Like, you know what I mean? You guys didn't know him back then, but, like, he wasn't square as square can be. Like, he. You remember you drove me to the bar the first time I ever went, I was like, maybe I was maybe 14 or 15. I was playing junior B. And you were. You were driving your mom's minivan. We went out to Port D. He.
Yancey Thigpen
Charged her for gas.
Cal Clutterbuck
I got in. I got into the mansion with tarts, and, like, we were, like. We were vibing. But biz biz actually grew up. Like, his backyard backs up to my wife's backyard. So, like, oh, she's known him longer than I have.
Biz Nunez
Yeah. Cassie.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah. But we. We really, like, kind of like when we both went to junior, probably, we started training together at Jay McLean's, like, way back in the day is when I really first met him. And then he had a couple years in Wheeling where he was, like, a wild card. And then when he. When he made the show and then I made the show kind of around the same time, we started hanging out this summer, and we had a couple good summers together.
Biz Nunez
We had a good training Together. When you, when you first started with Minnesota and going back to wit, calling you a bowling ball, you maybe were a little high in the body fat percentage. And they were trying to get you on this diet where you were essentially starving yourself, trying to lose weight and, and get in the gym and get in shape. NHL ready.
Cal Clutterbuck
Dude, I've always been fighting my weight. Like, it's like, well, you're in one.
Yancey Thigpen
Now because there's no more hockey.
Army Armstrong
You know what?
Cal Clutterbuck
I've actually done a decent job.
Yancey Thigpen
Okay. All right.
Cal Clutterbuck
I'm like five pounds up from playing weight, you know, which for me is like nothing, whatever, like, like, you know, but I needed it, man. Like, there was one year, the lockout year 20, 2012. I got down to like 199 pounds and I was a useless tit out there. It was like fucking, you know, I was trying to run into guys and they're all bigger than me. And I was like, this sucks. Like, I hated it. So, you know, I hovered around like 210, 215, maybe 220. I did play a World Championships. I was closer to 240. But like, you know, it is what it is. I can, you know, I got the legs for it. I can handle it. So it was always fine now and.
Yancey Thigpen
Going from junior, like, you look at.
Cal Clutterbuck
Your stats, your last year, you're well over a point a game. And then, you know, I hated playing against you.
Yancey Thigpen
Like, you come into the league, what.
Cal Clutterbuck
Was that point where you were like, okay, I, I'm not going to be a point of a per game guy. I'm going to just make everybody on this ice's life miserable and I'm going to do it for a thousand more games. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. I get that. I get that question a lot. And honestly, I'm kind of just an annoying human being by nature. Like, I'm very competitive and I just, I knew my path wasn't going to be fighting everybody. Like, it's just not it for me. I'm 5 foot 10, you know, could I Cam Jansen myself through it? Like, then I probably get a couple hundred games and I'd probably get my face kicked in a bunch of times. You know, I was, I was more just going out there to be really annoying. Like, I mean, as annoying as possible. And you guys, I'm sure know, but it was just like, I was really good at hitting and I always was. And so, so my thing was, and I told these, the guys this is that I was good at it. I didn't do anything really that dirty ever. No. I never got suspended, so it didn't really. I had no like pressure from like anybody to really have to like fight guys. I didn't had no business fighting. And there's one time in my career where I. I only think it was dirty. But I cross checked some kid on the Edmonton Oilers and. And Ju Jarkera asked me to fight and I fought him because I was like, okay, it's maybe borderline dirty. I should answer the bell. Sure. I go drop the gloves, I lose the fight. Whatever. It is what it is. Guy's a monster. I tried to Superman punch him actually, and I missed. I was like, oh, I was in one after that. But you know what it is, it's just like, it's constantly just it. My thing was like, I was more just. I wanted to be in your face all the time, like constantly. And annoying you and like annoying you and annoying you and not so much like maybe with my mouth early on, but like not like in the later years. Once you play against guys for 15 years, like Gan's, like we're having conversations on the ice, but you know, I'd give you the heads up or whatever, but I was like, I just, it was just annoying. Cause I was just consistent, you know, and that was, that was what's annoying about what was annoying. I think about me and, and it really was always the way, like even in junior before I started scoring a lot, that was kind of my. I was good at that and. And then I really kind of leaned into like learning the defensive side of the game and, and being out. Being able to be out there and play against a good player. So free up our guys to go out there and play against ToT teams. Not so good players. And I think we had a lot of success doing that.
Yancey Thigpen
I remember you, you gave me a warning one time, we're coming, we're coming. It's like as a defenseman, I remember Sean Thornton did. It was the best. But then you'd still try to run me. But your biggest thing you could skate, man, like you had wheels on you. Was that something from, you know, 10 years old. You're always a great skater because that's what allowed you to play over a thousand for sure.
Cal Clutterbuck
No, I was actually. My scouting report coming out of junior was I was a horrible skater.
Yancey Thigpen
Really?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, yeah. And I was. I used to wear grass like everyone else in. While in front row sports would just put everybody.
Biz Nunez
Yeah.
Cal Clutterbuck
Oh, yeah. You wore those cement boots too, didn't You.
Biz Nunez
Oh, you think I didn't.
Yancey Thigpen
That's why he's so tight. There's groins and hips now. Can't even. There's a reason why only refs wore.
Cal Clutterbuck
Those things because they are not good ski. Oh, they were like wearing pure white laces.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah. Did you work with somebody maybe in one of the off seasons turning pro or just something clicked or. Or they had it wrong.
Biz Nunez
You've never power skating with Nancy he gruel growing up?
Cal Clutterbuck
No, I, I was no Sherry Shaw a couple times and I hated it. And it was like, if I gotta do this to get better, like I really don't want it that badly. I hated it. My back would hurt. She'd have me sitting in the chair position doing seat cuts up the ice for an hour straight. My leg bagged. But I put, I actually put vapor tens on like my third year in junior and like all of a sudden I wasn't a bad skater anymore. I think it was just like, I don't know, it might have been the fact that the grass weighed six pounds each.
Biz Nunez
Geez.
Cal Clutterbuck
I was wearing, I was wearing ankle, ankle waist the whole time. But no, I was fine. And, and I did get myself in the, in a, in a pretty good shape. Like my, my body kind of rounded out, my legs got strong and I was able to start carrying, carrying the weight because like in junior I went from like my first year junior, I showed up at like 155 and then by the start of my second year I was 205. So it was like, you know, it was a lot of weight to put on and I kind of got strong in the process. So then I might have. And then I went to 225 and that was a little much.
Yancey Thigpen
But go. Going back right like you, I think your second or maybe third year junior, you met and played with I think a 14, maybe 15 year old John Tavares. And it's funny, you guys end up, you know, being teammates again later on, but right away it was just that evident. Like this guy is that good.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, I think he had like 35 or 40 when he was 14. Like he was 14. His birthday's in like late September, so when he showed up to camp, he was like 14. And so it was like. And I think I was like my third year, so I would have been 17 turning 18. I got a late birthday too, so I became his kind of like driver to school, sort of chaperone. But again, like he was so quiet, man. Like they were grooming this kid to be Like, Sidney Crosby, media ready, like, couldn't do anything. You know, all eyeballs were on him. But then he would go out on the ice and like he was. I mean, he's incredible. Like, he, like, what is he now, 35? He scored 40 almost last year. Like, he's just so solid on his skates. He's got such a unique game. I think think people don't give him enough credit for that. And then, and then as a 1615 turning 16 year old, he scored 75 goals. Like, I, I played on his line for most of that year. It was like ridiculous. Like, I mean he's, he's the first guy I've ever seen score more than one wraparound goal in a year. He scored like 10 of them. And I was like, what? I'm also, like, I was also kind of like, I'm in the slot here, bud.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, round the net and find me, buddy.
Cal Clutterbuck
I think you're gonna be fine. Like, why don't you give me a couple extra cookies here? But no, it was great, man, he was just so young. He was so young, like, so timid and young, but he took a lot of shit and, and he battled through it. And he's a gamer, man. He's. And he loves hockey. I'll tell you, he loves hockey more than Morgan, more than you can imagine. Probably one of the first wave of guys, like this younger wave of guys who are just obsessed with the game. And I'm sure you guys noticed talking to him, playing with him, them, that's like all they do, you know, And I, I wasn't that way. Like, I just, I wanted to play the game and go home, have a couple beers and like shut down, you know, and, and. But these guys are all in, man. Like the McKinnon's and McDavid's of the world are just like all hockey, all the time.
Biz Nunez
I'd be remiss though, before we get too deep into your NHL career, like growing up in Wellen, getting to play for some great coaches, great players there. It felt like during that five, six year window, we had Dan Pai, Jamie Tardif, Nathan Horton rolled through Andre DeVoe, Matt Ellis, who kind of set the way. Like, how cool. Girardi, of course, can't forget him. Like, I think he's, I think you might have surpassed him for most games played from a Welland guy from back home. But just like, what did it mean to you to grow up there and be around those guys? And how proud are you the way that you've represented Our hometown, it's just.
Cal Clutterbuck
Such a unique place and like, unless, you know, you don't know, but, like, you know, and I. I grew up in the best part of that era because I was kind of the last one, so I got to see them all go through it, including yourself. And. And, you know, I was so blessed because you guys all took me under your wing. Like, I was out there skating with you guys. Like, even when Matt Ellis is playing in the A and Danny's playing in the show, like, I was skating with you guys in the summer and I always was, like, kind of had to elevate myself to keep up with you guys. And I had a benchmark. So I always had. I always had a frame of reference and I always kind of had this feeling like it was possible because of the guys who were before me going out and doing it and. And our coaches, like, our minor hockey coaches were great, man. Like, you know, and just. Just for, like, just for not even teaching hockey because, like, I don't know how many minor hockey coaches really, like, are going to teach you the game the way you need to learn pro, like, because they don't. Not many of them have played, but there's a lot of guys around well and who played at, like, a decent level, like, you know, the Bob laforce and the Al Wiley of the world. And you run into them at like, ccs and like, you're around the rink and. And there's really, like a hockey community there that really, like, just makes you feel like, yeah, no, I'm in the right place and I'm doing the right things and, like, we'll see how far I can take it. And, you know, it just really kind of built a foundation for me and like, it's more of a character thing. Like, my coaches growing up, it was always about, like, it was always about being a good teammate and like, you know, not being an idiot, treating the rafts with respect and like, you know, all the stuff that, like, I think maybe gets lost in a lot of places. And we just. Luckily for me, like, like I said, I had. I had great, like, role models and. And guys who were close to me in age that were doing it. So I was basically confident that I could go do it. And then I had good coaches to kind of like, give me the foundation when I got there. I wasn't going to be a total donkey.
Yancey Thigpen
You got. You got to Minnesota. I'm kind of going through here. Like, Owen Nolan was on the team your rookie year.
Cal Clutterbuck
Holy.
Yancey Thigpen
Talk about a throwback.
Biz Nunez
Well, that's kind of cool because he grew up in Thor.
Cal Clutterbuck
Up in Thorold, man. And it's so weird. Like, born in Belfast, Ireland, and then somehow grows up in Thorold, doesn't put a pair of skates on till he's 12 years old, and then becomes a complete stud in the NHL. Like, you know, he was. He was great with. For me, man. Like, he took a special liking to me.
Yancey Thigpen
He.
Cal Clutterbuck
He spent a lot of time with me that he didn't have to. He was. Remember, I got healthy scratch for, like, I only got healthy scratch twice, and it was my first year, and it was kind of just like, you know, Jacques Lamar was kind of just, I guess, sending me a message, and he just pulled me aside. He's like, dude, you're fine. Just keep doing what you're doing. Don't worry about it. It was like. It was great. He was a good guy, but he was grumpy, man. Like, he's a grumpy mother.
Biz Nunez
I heard he's the grumpiest man alive.
Cal Clutterbuck
He's might be the grumpiest man alive.
Biz Nunez
Is. Was it before he had his coffee or just, like, all the time? Like, well, would you ask him, hey, why are you so grumpy today?
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah, right?
Cal Clutterbuck
All the time. All the time. Did he get a coffee? Almost made him worse.
Biz Nunez
What was it that made him the grumpiest?
Cal Clutterbuck
Walking into the door. Yeah, I mean, first thing in the morning, probably. Unless. Unless. Unless somebody did something that would, like, rub them the wrong way. And then it was like, okay, let's just give him his space. And. Because he was nails, too. Like, oh, you know, keep. My rookie year, he. I fought Sean Avery in one game at msg, my first game there, and he fought Colton Moore right after.
Biz Nunez
What?
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, he was fighting those guys, dude.
Cal Clutterbuck
He fought Colt Moore and almost dropped him. I was like, dude, what the is wrong with him? He's. He's great. Like, he's nails man. Like, you know, and then we're in the room after, so we both get sent off, like, less than five minutes in the period, and he's, like, in there afterwards, like. Like, giving me the tutorial on, like, grab and twist and, like, they tuck your chin. It was crazy, man.
Biz Nunez
That's awesome.
Cal Clutterbuck
I played with him in Phoenix, and.
Yancey Thigpen
He invited me out one night, and.
Cal Clutterbuck
I'm like, oh, finally I'm in with this guy. Like, Buster likes me. We have a great night. He had his cousins in from Ireland the next morning, I'm like, hey, what's up? Buster didn't say A word to me.
Yancey Thigpen
Nothing.
Cal Clutterbuck
How about this story? This is a crazy story. So I'm at Super bowl party. My. I think my rookie year, maybe my. Yeah, my rookie year. And I wasn't a typical rookie, let's say. I felt like I was pretty comfortable. So, like, I was, you know, having some drinks and. And Cowboy had gone home, but his wife liked to have a good time party so that everyone's still there. Brent Burns had a UFC mat laid out in his basement right by where we were watching the game. So his wife is a feisty little thing. Like, she's like, you know, 4ft 11. So she's, like. Starts to, like, want to wrestle. So I'm like, fake sparring her from a distance, and I like. She, like, tries to kick me, and I'm like, hey, don't do that. Like. And I try and kick her. She grabs my leg. I'm like, don't do that. I'm like. She's like, why? I'm like, I'll jump and roundhouse kick you. She goes, yeah, right. I kick her again, like. Like, play kicker. She grabbed my leg. I jump and roundhouse kicker and actually catch her in the chin. Drop her. I dropped her. Cut her mouth open like she's bleeding.
Army Armstrong
I'm like, oh, my God.
Cal Clutterbuck
I'm like, this guy is gonna fucking kill me. And sure enough, like, I get to the rink the next day. I'm just like. I didn't sleep all night. I was like, oh, boy. I get there, first guy there. I'm just waiting for it, and he. He comes up to me and he said something ridiculous, and I don't want to misquote him, but it was like. He's like, did you have a good time last night? I'm like, yeah, something happened. He goes, oh, no. I know. I'm like, okay. He goes, she earned it.
Yancey Thigpen
You thought he'd be snapping.
Cal Clutterbuck
I thought he was gonna lose his mind. He's just like. He said something like, play stupid game. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Something like that. You know what I mean? I was just like. I couldn't believe it. I was just like, oh, my God, this is insane. What world am I living in?
Biz Nunez
That must have been unreal playing in Minnesota, though, such a big hockey town. And it also had listed there the top score of the team that year. Gabric. So that, like, playing with him in his prime, like, the way he would skate, like, that must have been just sick.
Cal Clutterbuck
It was cool, man. Like, that's a great place to play, like, especially for A young guy. It's a great scene there. There's a lot of colleges, a lot of, like, University of Minnesota is right there. Like, it's a really good place to play. They love the team. The place is packed all the time. We were coming off of, like. Like, very successful years. Like, the tail end of. I got in there. The tail end of, like, the Rolston chair, Mark Bouchard, Gabric, Dimitri. Years, like, where they were. You know, they would win 35 home games out of 42. It was just, like, automatic playoff birth. And they can never really get over the hump, but they have really good teams, and the. The people there were so genuinely nice. And, like, I had a lot of opportunities there, and I. I loved it there. I was really sad leaving there. And. And really, when I got traded to the Islanders, I was shattered. I was depressed.
Yancey Thigpen
You know, you guys had just made the playoffs finally, the year before.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, yeah, in a shortened year. And they won, like, 12 games in a row to, like, make it. But I was like, you know what I mean? You go in there as a visitor, especially from the Western Conference, and you go right to the Marriott from Farmingdale, and then you walk through the gauntlet of fans to the Coliseum, and then you play in the Coliseum as a visitor, and you're just like, this place is. Is just terrible.
Yancey Thigpen
Get me out of here.
Cal Clutterbuck
And I got dealt there, and I was like, I'll never forget. I was in my basement at my old place in Brookhaven. This. And I was just like. I thought I was getting traded to, like, San Jose or California. So I'm on the. I'm on, like, online looking at houses in. In Cali. And next thing you know, Gary Bettman gets up to the thing, and he's just like, I have a trade to announce. And I'm like, oh, here we go, boys. Like, I'm going out west, like the Islanders trade for. And I'm like, like, oh, God, no. Right. Right to the fridge. Just. I had a boot. Like, Molson. Canadian was giving out, like, glass boots at the time. I had a boot. I filled it up in the tap, and I just, like, took three of them down right away. I was just like, yeah, I fucking earned this one, didn't I? I'm like, this is the world getting me. But it just turned out to be.
Yancey Thigpen
The greatest place for me, buddy. I'm looking at the names on the Wild, too. So I ran into this guy about biz. When did we go to Halifax? March. James Shepard. So you guys played some bastards yeah, well. Well, I'm sure he missed that season. Do you remember that story? I was with him in Vail?
Cal Clutterbuck
The best man of my wedding.
Yancey Thigpen
No, unreal guy. I hadn't seen him since the accident and he was on an ATV and broke his femur.
Army Armstrong
It was horrible.
Yancey Thigpen
And. And that. I didn't know you were that close. But he was good, man. Like, he was gonna be. And he still played in the NHL after that.
Biz Nunez
San Jose.
Army Armstrong
He was.
Yancey Thigpen
And he. Yeah, I caught up with him in Halifax. Great dude.
Cal Clutterbuck
Dude, he's one of the best dudes you can find, man. Like, he was. Him and I were the two young guys.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah.
Cal Clutterbuck
Played as an 18 year old and I was like 19. And we did everything together. Like, we lived across the street. He was my guy. Yeah. And then he had that ATV accident at like, in Vail and like, shattered his kneecap into like seven pieces.
Yancey Thigpen
And then he loses money that year since it was one of those accidents.
Cal Clutterbuck
Oh, yeah. So he lost his money and then he had to have it done like two more times because he kept, like, separating, I guess they put like a wire through it all and like circle it and bring it all back together. And then the wire, like, came loose. So he went back in like two, three times. He missed like two full years. And then this is the worst part is, is like he came to my wedding and he had had surgery like four days before, and he's the best man in my wedding. So he's in like a wheelchair at the wedding or like crutches and like, he's getting picked up on a chair. And like, you know, it was just like. It was. I couldn't believe he even made it. Like, it's just kind of the kind of guy he is. He's like. He's the perfect opposite for me. Like, he's super chill kind of hippie. Like, just like. It's all good, man. Don't worry about it. And I'm just like, you know, white knuckling it all over the place. And he was perfect for me. He was. I mean, he's still one of my best friends. I love him to death. And he's living back and. Yeah, he's out in Halifax now. He was in Vancouver for a while. He played all over Europe. He did well there. But yeah, kind of a shitty bounce for him, man. Kind of derailed him. And then. Yeah, actually. Actually we there. There was one night where. Where he was about to get reinstated after being suspended. So, like, he'd gone through the process. He was healthy. He Got cleared. So we went out to kind of like celebrate a little bit in the afternoon, and we had practiced the next day and we went out with Kevin Love and Nick Swardson at. At the Loop in Minneapolis. And we like comedian.
Biz Nunez
Oh, he's so funny, dude.
Cal Clutterbuck
He's a goer. And. And so we set the record for, like, most great babe shops shots. And Sheppy's like 20 minutes late to practice the next day. So I'm like, dude, you're like. You're literally like. And like, of course, like, they're waiting at the door for him, and he walks in like, do you want me to suspend you again? And. And I was like, this fucking poor bastard can't catch a break. You know what I mean? Like, it was just like one thing after another. But no, he. They reinstated him and then they kind of moved on from him. But he had some good years in San Jose and like. But again, like, you can't. Like, once you're 25 and you go through that and you don't play for two years, like, you can't get your. Your footing back. And he just had a tough go. But, I mean, his attitude towards the whole thing was like, pretty incredible the whole time.
Biz Nunez
How did you meet Nick. How do you say his last name? Schwartz.
Cal Clutterbuck
Nick Swartzen. How'd you.
Biz Nunez
How'd you meet him? And what are these shots you're talking about? Is like a famous bar?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, famous bar. The Loop has a great bape. It's like they give you like a half glass of like, vodka and like, grape soda, but it's like a Minnesota grape soda. And it's like a little. Maybe a little bit of soda added in, but they give you two big fat straws and you. They give you like a shot like this, and you just sip it through the straw, like, take it down. And we set the record. We had like 80 of them, but it was like, you know, There was like 10 people there and it was. It was like the receipt was on the wall for a while. I think someone beat us. But he was, you know, one of those. And we just. Next thing you know, like, you're wrestling and hockey, fighting with those guys in the bar. It's like five in the afternoon. That's like. That's. That's a long time ago. That's. That's the way we used to do things.
Yancey Thigpen
What was the trade when you. When you did get dealt? Who. Who did they?
Cal Clutterbuck
Rider?
Yancey Thigpen
No, that was the deal in a third, right? Wow.
Biz Nunez
How the do you know that? Yance am I right?
Cal Clutterbuck
Hockey nerd alert. No, I just, I just texted the producers like 10 minutes ago. Yeah, that was Nina. It was Nino. And actually when I got here, people were pissed. They're like, we're trading a first rounder for a fourth liner. Like, thanks. This is awesome. Like, classic islander move. People are still kind of bitter about it, but, you know, it worked out fine. I. I think I. I think I held my weight there.
Biz Nunez
I just wanted to ask, you mentioned Brent Burns, so he probably got there a few. Did he get there a few years after that? You were in Minnesota?
Cal Clutterbuck
No, he was there before me.
Biz Nunez
Okay.
Cal Clutterbuck
He was there.
Yancey Thigpen
He played as an 18 year old.
Cal Clutterbuck
He's an 18 year old and he's. I think he's an 85. Okay. Yeah, he would have been there two or three years before me. He was already like, well established. I remember he. I think first year I got called up, he, He. He had just signed mid season, his extension. So, like, yeah, three years before.
Yancey Thigpen
Was he then. Oh, sorry, B.
Biz Nunez
We could talk about him in general. I was just wondering, was he going through his Ace Ventura phase then? Like, when you got there, did he have all the snakes and didn't he have palm trees in his backyard in Minnesota?
Cal Clutterbuck
Dude, he had like, he had like. He called, he called the zoo to see if he could like, have his backyard pool built like an exhibit. Like, you know, like you go see the polar bears of the bears, and they have like, like the fake rocks and they jump off the rocks and go into the water and then there's like the beach. And then like his backyard was made by like a zoo designer. And then he had his like 100 snake, 80 snakes in the basement or whatever. But he had this one 12 foot, like banana python, like the big boy. He kept them in like drawers, though. Like, they were like, they weren't like, you know what I mean? Like, they weren't in like, like when you go to a serpentarium or something. Like they're in like aquariums. Like, like these guys were just in drawers on like newspaper clippings. And I remember the one time I went over and he's like, you want to feed the big boy? I'm like, yeah, sure, no problem. He's like, put this glove on. The glove goes up to like here, and he takes like an eight pound rabbit out of the freezer.
Biz Nunez
Oh, no.
Cal Clutterbuck
He starts hammering it against the concrete floor. And I'm like, what are you doing? He's like, you got to bloody him up a little bit because otherwise, like, they Won't eat him if he's not, like, freshly bleeding. And he's like. Like, if he's. If they know he's dead, like, they won't touch him. So he gets in there, he's like, hey, you gotta hold him and, like, shake him and just wait till he comes. So I had to sit there and hold this thing and shake it until the thing, like, kind of circled around. And, like. And, like, was, like, eyeing me up, and I was like, dude, if this guy goes over my elbow, like, what am I gonna do? Like, I'm gonna. I was thinking to myself, like, I'm gonna grab him behind the head, like, put him in chokehold.
Biz Nunez
You remember all the stuff that Owen Nolan taught you?
Cal Clutterbuck
What, I mean, mean?
Biz Nunez
Yeah. You remember the talk you had with Owen Nolan after the. After the scrap of the first period in New York?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah. He grabbed on that thing and. And, like, took it down and he's like, yeah, no, he's good for three weeks to a month. I'll feed him next month. He's good.
Biz Nunez
Oh, Jesus.
Cal Clutterbuck
That thing. That thing got out one day and they. They found it three days later wrapped around the hot water heater. Jesus.
Yancey Thigpen
Did he have kids then?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, he had two young kids. Yeah.
Army Armstrong
Oh, my God.
Biz Nunez
What did. What else did he have other than snakes?
Army Armstrong
Any.
Biz Nunez
Any other exotic pets?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, he had, like, a bearded dragon that was like, you know, like the small version of like, a Komodo dragon. It was like. And he was like. He told me, he's like, of all the ones I have, that's the one that. That really kind of scares me the most because he's so fast and so vicious, but he was, like, probably like, you know, this big. And he had parrots. Like, he had an apartment sort of like. Like, up off the main floor, like a nanny suite kind of thing. And he had parrots. And they had, like, the parrots all sit on those hanging balls. You ever seen them? They're, like, wrapped in, like, hemp, and they're like. They're, like, round, but they have places for the birds to stand. And he had them, like, in that room, and you'd open the door and, like, the parrots would, like, go flying by you. Like, wind, wingspan of, like four and a half feet. And just, like, they're talking to you, and he's in there playing Call of Duty with them, and they're just hanging on the thing. It was great.
Yancey Thigpen
Crazy.
Cal Clutterbuck
It was totally Ace Ventura. Like that scene when.
Army Armstrong
Come to me, my jungle friends.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, yeah, exactly. When he's just like, what do you got all that pet food for? He's like, fiber. And then he opens the door. Oh, the thing.
Biz Nunez
Don't get this guy. Don't get this guy started. He knows every movie line. Well, I guess so. Do you, you, you. Yance.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah. Let's just do movie quotes.
Biz Nunez
Do movie quotes.
Yancey Thigpen
So obviously, is Burnsy the most interesting.
Cal Clutterbuck
Guy you've ever played with on and off the ice? Yeah. I mean it has to be, right? Like there's no. And even now, like he kind of expanded it. He's living. He's got a place in Texas. He's got like his 400 acres all fenced in with like African wildlife and he's all into like the sustainability and. And then he drives his RV around all summer and then like works out on the side of the highway and you know, like there isn't just. There's no human beings on the planet that like do that. Aside from like maybe David Goggins and Cameron Haynes, like, they're just none that.
Yancey Thigpen
Play in the NHL or any other professional sport.
Cal Clutterbuck
Do you think, like, do you see him retiring? I feel like he's going to be.
Yancey Thigpen
A guy you have to like, he's.
Cal Clutterbuck
You're going to have to drag him out of the rink. I think you're going to have to drag him out of the rink. But the other thing too is like, he's just like, when is he going to slow down, really? Like, he might play longer than Char, like, honestly, because he's got to be close to 40 now and I don't. He's still pretty good and he still flies and he's still, still. He's still one of the strongest human beings. I know. His. What's crazy about him is he's like, he just got the brain of like a nine year old child.
Biz Nunez
Holy dude. He's three games away from 1500.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah. What?
Biz Nunez
That's that. I. I thought he would have been at like 12, 13.
Cal Clutterbuck
I think he plays 82 every year.
Biz Nunez
He's played for every year.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah. One clutter.
Yancey Thigpen
The craziest thing is that you played 82 once. It was here last year.
Cal Clutterbuck
I know, I know.
Biz Nunez
Brett Burns has played 82 games 10 times.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
That is the way he plays.
Biz Nunez
Remarkable.
Cal Clutterbuck
Crazy. Remarkable. Playing 82 in your last year is like making double bogey on every hole and then making e lining.
Yancey Thigpen
Hey, that keeps you coming back though.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, but he wasn't allowed back.
Biz Nunez
Hey, was he doing the backpack thing when you were playing with him?
Cal Clutterbuck
No, he wasn't. He wasn't there yet.
Biz Nunez
He hadn't evolved to that yet.
Cal Clutterbuck
He wasn't there yet. Yeah.
Biz Nunez
Yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
When you went to the Islanders, like, I mean, you guys made the playoffs your second year there, your third year, then two years without, and then. Then it kind of started, right. Like, did you see. Cause, I mean, you were in the cup finals. Like, that was the cup final, the game you guys lost to Tampa. But even years prior, were you. Like, we're building something here? Because even when you guys had the team to do it, I. I was somebody like, I don't know. They can't do anything. But you must have seen something building and growing there as it was happening slowly. No.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah. You. The interesting thing was it started in, like, I want to say it started my second year there, which would have been like, maybe 14, 15. We made playoffs. We lost to Washington seven, which was, like, still maybe one of the most, like, physical gauntlet series of all time. Like, it was ridiculous, the physical contact in that series. And we went to seven. I think we lost two one in game seven in Wash. And I think for us, things were so bad in New York at the time. Like, we're talking, like, our practice rink was, like, the ice wasn't even level. Like, you could stand at the hash marks, and you would just drift down to the goal line, and then. So you'll. Everybody, like, we'd started drilling. Everybody would go to the one end that was the high end so you could skate downhill, and then you saved the skate uphill.
Yancey Thigpen
We want you to play downhill.
Biz Nunez
Okay, let's play north. Sure. Got no choice.
Cal Clutterbuck
Like, we had, like, no food. We, you know, we were. We had. We had all the bad. And it was just like they were trying to get a. A new rink built where the Coliseum was, and it wasn't working out. Nobody in, like, politics would let them do it. So then Charles was kind of looking to, like, just not spend that much money. And Snowy was trying his ass off to build a team, and he did a great job. And luckily for us as players, we sort of started to, like. Like, we kind of came together because the only, like, the only way that you could get through, like, a situation like that, it was almost like the, you know, Cleveland Indians, Major league. It was just like, we kind of just bonded over the fact that we were. We definitely had it the worst. We sort of nicknamed ourselves the migrational Salmon. We were always swimming upstream. Everything was difficult. It was like. But it made us very close as a group. We had a lot of, like, Western League and Ontario Guys. So, like, those guys, we usually get along well with those guys. And then a lot of the us guys we had were Minnesotans. So, like, they're basically an extension of, like, that. And we just had a really good group and good leaders and good team. Like, Franz Nielsen's one of the best teammates I've ever had. Kyle Koso, everybody knows his leadership capabilities and qualities. And. And then, you know, you've got Matt Martin and you've got, like, some older guys there that were. We were young. And then Brock Nelson came in, Ryan Strom came in, Anders Lee came in. So we. We. We kind of started to build something, and we felt it then. And then that kind of plateaued, and it started training the other way. We missed the playoffs two years in a row, and we kind of thought, like, oh, shit. Like, we might have missed our window. And then Lou came in with Barry, and. And then we were like, oh, shit. Like, we were expected to be a lottery team when Johnny left, and I think we might have finished second in the division. We swept the Penguins in the first round, which nobody expected, and. And then we got swept by the Hurricanes. But then the following year, we were like, all right, it's go time. We got a couple extra guys. I think, really, when it started, it was only traded for Letty and boychuk.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah.
Cal Clutterbuck
In fifth. In 14. This September of 14. And then, you know what I mean, like, a decor is everything for a hockey team, like, in the NHL these days. Like, you know, you. Like, 2D men can change any hockey team. There's a lot of teams out there that have solid forward groups. They just need the puck in the right spot, and it all kind of comes together. And so it happened for us. But. But we were close, man. Like, we. I. I'm. I'm lifelong friends with Ton with. Like, I'll be lifelong friends with a lot of those guys. It was there. There were great years.
Yancey Thigpen
Take us back to when John left because, you know, like, the. The picture, he. I think he maybe dropped the picture of him in the. In the Maple Leafs, like, bed and on and. And pajamas and. And you guys are hoping he comes back. All of a sudden, the fans despise him. Like, do you remember that July 1st? Like, what did you think? What did you hear? You know, had heard. And what did the team say after? Because that's a kick in the dick. Because you're right.
Cal Clutterbuck
Like.
Yancey Thigpen
Like, when he left, it was like, oh, they're done.
Biz Nunez
Did you. Did you guys view it as kind of gutless at the fact that he didn't give him the heads up to trade him at the deadline. No.
Cal Clutterbuck
No, no. I mean. No. Yeah. I mean, he. He's. He was. He is and was one of my closest friends. He. I was in his wedding party that summer, so he was getting married that summer in Niagara on the lake. And. And we were on his bachelor party the week leading up to July 1st. So we were at Bandon Dunes from, like, call it June 25th to June 30th. And then he was going to LA, to his agent's office to like, have people come in and pitch him the offers. And I just remember him really being not sure. And. And it. When it was like, trade deadline time, like, we were still kind of good and he had ended up getting. I think he got hurt that year anyway. So, like, it wasn't. It wasn't what people make it. It like Snowy really, like, wanted to give himself the chance to sign him. And I think John really considered coming back. But, you know, at the end of the day, like, when you're that guy and you get the chance to go home and be the guy and the hero, like, if you're looking at yourself in the mirror and saying, like, as an outsider and saying, like, I wouldn't do that, like, you're liar.
Yancey Thigpen
You're full of.
Cal Clutterbuck
Exactly, full of. Like, he had the chance to go. And my only reservation is I kind of. I wanted him to get on the phone with, like, Zach Parisi at the time, because I knew Zach and like, him going to Mini was kind of the same thing. And it. And it didn't necessarily work out the way that Zach wanted to in Mini. And I just wanted him to have the information, like, hey, like, if this doesn't work out the way you want it to work out, like, there is a chance that it's going to be difficult for you to, like, be in your hometown if that's where you want to live the rest of your life. Like, you might hear some on a regular basis even into your 40s and 50s. Like. Like, that was my only play to him was like, you know, sometimes it's good to play away from home because, you know, you can always get out of there if you want to. And you know, he took so much man, like that first game back he made anyway, so he. Not to get things confused, he made the decision and I didn't know what he was going to do, so he made the decision around, I think, July 6, around then, something like that.
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, that I didn't know that went on that long. That wasn't the first day went on lie.
Cal Clutterbuck
It was like that.
Biz Nunez
I think he took every team to Nobu and just abuse the. The private plane hours.
Cal Clutterbuck
It was like the. The schmoozing period time of the NHL where, like, they had, like, you know, a week to, like, present their offers. And he waited a little while, but I think right around maybe. Maybe it was 4th of July, but he made an announcement, I think on his Instagram page or whatever, and they announced it, and people on Long island went crazy. And. And quite frankly, I wasn't surprised. Like, when I. When I knew, like, when he wasn't, like, all in on staying, I kind of knew something was up, and I just didn't know where he was going to go. But, you know, it ended up being good for him, and it ended up being really great for us. Like, I mean, after that, Brock Nelson just turned into an absolute, like, horse stud bars. He was able to go out there and do his thing. And like I said, it gave us the freedom to sort of add guys to our lineup. We brought in, like, the Leo Komarovs and the Valtteri Filth Blows of the World, and then the Travis Zajak and Palmares, and we were able to kind of add, like, Jordan Eberly was maybe the most important piece of it all. And so it kind of just, you know, again, it was like our attitude was already, like, us against the world. Like, we're the New York Islanders. The whole league gives us no respect, regardless of how good or bad we are. Even when we were good and went to the conference final the year before, we come back the next year, it's just like, this team can't repeat. Yep. We were all like, all right, you guys are dumb. But it is what it is. And. And it just worked out the way it worked out. And I never. I never was even. Like, I never held a grudge. It's like, the guy. It's the guys, he earned that decision. Like, it's his decision to make. I don't. I. There's nothing that I can do. I can try and, like, tell him that we all want him to stay, but, like, at the end of the day, he's gonna make it. And. And he made it. And, like, I'm sure he's fine with it. I'm. I know he's fine with it. And. And I'm fine with it, too. It's just that. That, you know, people on Long island, they hold a garage.
Biz Nunez
How was the wedding? He must have had, like, 15 Islander guys there?
Cal Clutterbuck
No, it was all the owners from other teams. Oh, I think there was 12 groomsmen. So I was standing like, I was obviously the one at the end standing like outside the New York just put me in the front row with, with the families. It's like a more visible rather sit. We got, we got pretty banged up, actually. I don't think people realize, like, like during a season, if a guy's gonna be a free agent, you don't really talk about it too much with your, with your teammates. And if a guy does leave, if he's gonna go make more money or he's gonna be happier, wants to be like, every guy's happy for one another. Like all you.
Yancey Thigpen
Everyone knows you have a.
Cal Clutterbuck
Either a 5 year window or a 15 year window to make your money. And there's.
Yancey Thigpen
Fans get more mad than the team.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, the players are. Everyone's happy for each other unless you like, talk about them on the way out. But he's. He seems like a. The class act not doing like that. Yeah. And like the guys that like you, like, there's just. No, there's. There can't be any animosity. Like, you're just like, dude, you. Like, when you become a free agent and you guys know, like, you earn that, you have to grind through seven or eight years of being in your spot that you got drafted and, and whether you like it or not, if you like it, you stay. If you don't, you go somewhere else. And like, he had an opportunity you can't turn down. Like, they were up and coming. They had. Had all the tools. They had everything they needed. Like, you know, I, I just could never blame them. But, you know, I mean, people on Long island took it very personally. Like, I think my favorite thing was right before he came back to play that first game. Do you guys ever watch a video of that first game?
Biz Nunez
Yeah, they were throwing snakes at him. They were selling snakes at the game.
Cal Clutterbuck
It was Brett Burns. Oh, yes. This game I've ever seen. And we beat them like 7:1. And it was like pumping, dude. It was wild. And he was just like. And I saw him after the game and he's just like, God, I'm glad that's over. Like, I. Honestly, dude, I think he might have a couple more in you. Like, I think every time you come back, it might not be that bad, but it's gonna be bad and. But no, it was crazy. And then there was like a News 12. Like the local news station went to the Coliseum parking lot to film people like, basically, like, telling, like, how do you feel about John leaving? And it was just like, like, I, I. I called my son John. I like, you know, I can't believe.
Army Armstrong
You would do this to us.
Cal Clutterbuck
You're a scumbag. Like, it was just like. It's still on YouTube. You can pull it up. It's insane.
Biz Nunez
There were like, like, dolls with nooses on them.
Cal Clutterbuck
Like, dolls, like, burning jerseys in the parking lot. You know, pajama boy chants. I remember my favorite chant was at the end of the game. They were just chanting, it's your bedtime. Oh, no. Are used to so bad. But, like, you know, I mean, again, like, every decision has a consequence. And I guess that was his.
Biz Nunez
I was gonna ask you about the famous line Tazikas and, and Matt Martin. Matt Martin, probably the one of the more handsome players ever playing the NHL.
Cal Clutterbuck
Cal not too far behind him.
Yancey Thigpen
Your guy's line was a nightmare.
Biz Nunez
Nightmare to play against. When were you guys put together and, and like, just talk about the chemistry.
Cal Clutterbuck
And how starting games.
Biz Nunez
It must be awesome. Awesome getting to play with the same guys and knowing each other's tendencies for so long.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, we were, we were put together year two on the island for me. The year we. We ended up playing Wash. We were the brainchild of Jack Capuano. He decided to put us together, and he called me in one day, and he's just, like, clutter. I just, I think it's a good fit. We're gonna try it. I'm like, all right, Cap. Whatever, man. Let's do it. And so we went out there and. And the best part about it was the first, the first game was just like, you know, first shift, the puck was behind the net. Marty and I like Malachi sandwich and buying the net. And then it's just like the crowd goes bananas, and then, like, the Coliseum crowd is just loves that shit. So we just kind of, like, that was our thing. We kind of just like, started every game. We were going to win the Face Off. We were going to dump it in. And as Thomas Hickey said, we were like, you know, we were like a bunch of, like, Indians on horseback. Just, like, galloping in on a forecheck, just like swinging a club, like, ready to go. Know we were coming, like, you know, making noises and, and just, just feasting on D, man. And, and we did, we did. We did a really good job with that. And. And obviously, when it has success, it stays. But, like, honestly, we make the joke all the time. For ten years. Marty left for two years, but My. My name and Casey's name on the lineup card was the same for 750 games. Like, every game was just like. And always at the bottom. It's like, there it is. Like, the marker never changed. Like, there's blue marker everywhere else, and ours is still in, like, black marker from eight years ago still sitting there.
Yancey Thigpen
They never even erased it.
Army Armstrong
Sharpie.
Cal Clutterbuck
No, it was just. It just stayed. Like there was never a thought of changing it. It was just. We were good, man. Like, we had. We just. We did a good job of being able to, like, kind of do a little bit of everything. I think that that's what kind of set us apart. We could, like, we would score some big goals. Like, I think Casey scored 20 once or twice. We had some good years and then. And then we. We really made our.
Biz Nunez
Our.
Cal Clutterbuck
Our money in the playoffs. I think we. We really were a hard, hard thing to deal with in the playoffs for teams.
Yancey Thigpen
You mentioned Brock Nelson's name. You must have been fired up to see that new deal he got. I mean, he's over 300 goals now. Nasty player. I. Supremely underrated, and I, I think we'll see more offense even out of him in Colorado, but pumped for him to. To find a home there. I'm guessing you chatted with him like. Like, must have been pretty difficult to. To move on, right? That's the only thing he knew.
Cal Clutterbuck
Like, one of the more emotional reactions from a player having to make a decision like that. But I think, you know, he really was. And he's not a. He's an emotional guy, but very reserved, very quiet, but one of the driest, funniest you can find. But he, you know, pretty close and. And it was. It was weighing on him a lot. And I think once. Once it came down to it, like, there was a lot of chatter about him all year. Once it came down to it, like, at deadline time, when it was time for him to make the decision, I think he got really, really tough on him and really difficult. He said it was one of the toughest two weeks probably of his life, and he didn't want to leave. But at the same time, I think, And I, And I echoed this with him. It's just like, when you have the opportunity. It's the same thing with John. When you have the opportunity to put yourself in a situation in your early 30s, to go and be on a team that has a really good chance to win perennially. Like, you take it and. And he took it and. And then I wasn't sure what he was going to do, but I had a feeling he was going to stay in Denver. He said he loved it there. And that team, obviously, is a. Is a wagon. It's going to be a wagon for a long time. Those guys are young and they're locked up and. And so he landed in a great place. I think his style of place suits them perfectly. And he's a great player, man. Like, he's a horse. You don't realize, first of all, people don't realize how. How chippy and dirty he is. Like, he's kind of a rat up.
Yancey Thigpen
He can get like that, huh?
Cal Clutterbuck
I know. Oh, yeah. Well, he's. He's like, he's. He's real chippy, really competitive, but like, maybe one of the best hand eye coordination guys I've ever seen. Like, in practice, we would do three on two drills, and sometimes he would just juggle the puck on his stick in the middle of the ice just for fun, just to, like, so no one could take it from him. And it's like, it's crazy talent, that guy.
Army Armstrong
Yeah.
Biz Nunez
You got any Cronin stories?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, I sure do. Y. He's.
Army Armstrong
You know what?
Cal Clutterbuck
He's. He's. He. His heart isn't. Is in the right place. He's just so. He's so David Dogin that it's like everything is life or death. I think my favorite thing with him is like. Is like every time someone would fight, he would put. We'd come into the meeting the next day and. And it would be paused. Unlike the square off and we knew it was coming. He would play the clip. He had a stopwatch in his hand. He would start the stopwatch, and then the minute the fight was over, he would stop the stopwatch and he'd like, hold it out to the guys and be like, 37 seconds. He's like, this guy goes out there and puts his balls on the line for 37 seconds, and some of you guys can't even show up for one shift. Shift. Like, what the is wrong with you? Every time somebody fought every time, and it was just like, you know, you're like, you know it's coming. And I was talking to Marty about this yesterday. He came up and he's just like, I. Like, after the first time, it's like, all right, we get, we. We get. We get it. But he's just so. He's so intense. He was actually good for us. His Cappy was our head coach, but Crow really kind of like gave us the. The hardo sort of like side of things. And he would have the hard meetings and he would have, like, the best one liners, like, take the sandpaper out of your vagina and, like, jerking off. Right. With pen, paper, and like, I'll. I'll nail my dick to a burning log. If Nick Lety goes out there and hits somebody, like, you know, he would.
Biz Nunez
Say that in a pregame meeting.
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, yeah, he's nail my dick to a burning log.
Cal Clutterbuck
You can do that.
Biz Nunez
I mean, I like to get freaky, but nailing your dick to a burning log, that's.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah. But if Letty threw a hit, man, I get him going.
Biz Nunez
Holy wow. Add it to the spank bank.
Cal Clutterbuck
So, so, so over the top clutter.
Yancey Thigpen
You're such a hockey lifer. Like, what. What's next for you, buddy? Like, you think you'll be in management, scouting, coaching. Have you not. I mean, it's, It's. I think it makes a lot of sense. Take that one year, figure it all out. Or are you not even sure yet?
Biz Nunez
Well, preparing for a sandbagger is one.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah. You might play on the senior tour.
Biz Nunez
Yeah. Would you maybe join my ball hockey team to beat the wheels out of the. The Boston Stranglers?
Cal Clutterbuck
He's just gonna play in alumni games. He had seven goals in the alumni game last year. That would change. Yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah.
Cal Clutterbuck
Well, I show up there and the Rangers trot out their entire roster from 15, 16. And I'm like, like, sitting there next to, like, Eric Cairns and Benny Hogan. I'm like, all right, boys, we're gonna have to show up today. Like, we don't want to get embarrassed out here. It was. That was fun. No, I mean, honestly, like, I don't know. The answer is I don't know. I. I did. I did TV for MSG last year. I'm gonna do more this year. I'll probably be full time this year, so, you know, hopefully you'll get between the benches and do that for a little while and, you know, as much of a hockey lifer I am, I'm not really a hockey lifer. Like, I'm like, my sights are set on. On, like, playing golf and. And kind of hanging out at home and maybe trying something different. But I think once. Once you get out there and try something different, you realize that, like, your life's experience is in a certain place and you try.
Yancey Thigpen
Like, we don't know anything else.
Biz Nunez
No, nothing else.
Cal Clutterbuck
You have to go be ready to start over and, like, kind of of, like, shovel shit for a couple years. So I'm at the place Where I'm like, I got the shovel in my hand and I'm staring at the pile and I'm just not sure if I'm gonna start digging, you know.
Yancey Thigpen
All right, well, we got we. And this isn't the last question, but I want to get this ad in the rollback. Last question. Use the code chiclets@roback.com for generous 20% off your first purchase. Three end of this week. That's C H I C L E T S on R H O b a c k dot com. Amazing golf shirts.
Biz Nunez
You would love this.
Yancey Thigpen
They got everything 20% off. Polo shirts, swim trunks, and more with code chicklets. I gotta go back to the islanders and our producer just reminded us what the hell were they doing trading devontaves. You must have been shocked when that happened.
Cal Clutterbuck
Not really.
Army Armstrong
Really?
Cal Clutterbuck
Wow.
Yancey Thigpen
Did you see him being this good? Is that kind of a surprise as well?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yes and no. I mean, I mean, again, like we were in a position where we had done really well and somebody had to go because the numbers just don't add up. So if you're looking at us in, in that year, like that might have been like 19. If you're looking at that team in that year, like, you know, the difference between him and, I guess the only comparison is like Ryan Poolock is the only one. It's like either him or Pools goes. And Pooley was playing with Pelly and they were playing 23 minutes a game and they were shutting everyone down. So then you're sitting and Taser had a great start, great first year. And then his second year, I think that he, I think he had a little bit of like a sophomore. Like he had an average year for him. So I think at the time it was just sort of like we need to keep the kind of core guys intact and they made a decision and obviously, you know, you'd love to have both of those guys. I think that's, that goes without saying. But, you know, hindsight's 20 20, but maybe a little shocked, but at the time it was just like something needed to happen. We were just waiting to see what it was and that happened to be what it was. And, and, and Taser's a great player and he's. And again, he's gone to a great spot and he, and for teammates, like, you're just happy for them when they land in a good spot because it's sad to see those guys go, especially when you're in tight knit group. But you know, he gets to play with Gael and, and you know, he's the perfect guy for him because I think Taser knows exactly what his lane is. I don't think he tries to do too much. He lets Cale go and do it. He backs him up when he needs to. But he's a really good first pass guy. Skates extremely well. He's got a sneaky little sifter from the point. Like he knows. He knows exactly what type of player he is and that's why he's so successful in the league. I mean, that's really what it boils down to is, are you good enough and do you know who you are and are you going to be able to do it every night?
Biz Nunez
It sounds like you should be like in management.
Yancey Thigpen
That's why I asked it.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, he sounds like you should be. This is your little. This is your resume. You're welcome.
Yancey Thigpen
Well, let's go back to something that you do love maybe a little bit more than hockey. And that's golf. And when you talk about hockey players who play golf, it's always Clayton Keller, Cal Clutterbuck. Like those are the one and two in terms of game for the NHL. Yeah, like he's. So when did you get into it? I'm guessing you played growing up.
Biz Nunez
Oh, I've played with him a bunch.
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, okay.
Biz Nunez
He chucks.
Yancey Thigpen
What the she do to bizarre. Oh, I've seen it. Have you seen Business Backswing?
Cal Clutterbuck
Trust me, I've watched all the videos. I've seen it. I really. We gotta get him a treatment guy. Like, that's the problem. His shoulder turn is like.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah, he can't move, dude. And all he does is work out.0 athletics.
Biz Nunez
All those splinters in my ass.
Cal Clutterbuck
Mark. Him and Marty are the same, dude. They're all. They're both just jacked in the gym all the time and they go to swing the golf club and like it's just like.
Yancey Thigpen
You talk about like, yeah, shoulder rotation. He's like, what I gave a girl.
Biz Nunez
It's like a showing machine though.
Cal Clutterbuck
When you swing a driver like you're hitting a 40 yard pitch shot.
Army Armstrong
Keep going, keep going.
Cal Clutterbuck
Like, you know what I mean? Like, it's all in the hips. Just watch Happy Gilmore a couple times. It's all in the hips.
Yancey Thigpen
He does, he does hit his. Hit his pre roll and then he'll be like pretty good after that. So there are ways we can get him a bigger turn. It just involves narcotics.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I love playing though, man. I. I didn't play growing up much. I played. I want to say I had maybe two summers at like, maybe 12 and 13, where I got, like, a membership at Water Park Biz. Remember that place? It was like a farmer's field with 18 flags.
Biz Nunez
The old goat ranch had water slides, too.
Cal Clutterbuck
And I'd get a. My parents would chuck me two toonies, and I get like, a Diet Coke and a hot dog at the term. We played 36. Yeah.
Biz Nunez
Beer cart Boys.
Cal Clutterbuck
And then they'd pick me up and I go to, like, baseball practice or whatever. So I did that for two summers, and then through junior, I didn't play a whole lot. And then once I made the NHL and I made a little money, I joined, like, the Nice club back home, Lookout Point. And I was playing with a kid that I played minor hockey with. Was like, a really good player. Like, A plus. Was trying to play, like, serious golf, competitive golf. And there was this game where you could show up Monday to Friday, 7am first tee. You didn't have to call or text. Like, you just show up, put 20 bucks down, play 18 holes in, like, three hours, go out, have breakfast, and, like, divvy it up. And there was no shots, so I was like a seven handicap at the time, maybe an eight. And I. And I just was getting my. My ass handed to me on a regular basis. And I'm just a competitive guy, so I would go to the range after, and I would just, like, hit a million golf balls. And. And then. And then I just. You know, one day you shoot. Shoot 74, and one day you shoot 72, and next thing you shoot 70, and then you're shooting 73 regularly. And that's kind of just how. How it goes.
Biz Nunez
Oh, you're the best. No, we're gonna get.
Cal Clutterbuck
Okay, so I mean, business in the gym, and I was flying golf. Let's just put it that way.
Yancey Thigpen
And who played a thousand games.
Cal Clutterbuck
Business. I would have been best friends.
Biz Nunez
We got to give a shout out to Stacy, who we trained with together at the. Was it the St. Catherine's Racket Club?
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah. Yeah.
Biz Nunez
He was awesome. We. We. We had a. We were blessed to work with a lot of amazing people. And you brought up the Olympic lifter. It was. Yeah. Jay McLean. He was awesome for us, too. Maybe that's. That's what tightened me up a little bit. I. I gotta.
Cal Clutterbuck
I gotta. I gotta jump in. Like, Stacy was really good for me. Like, I. I could have. Like, I hated the gym. And he was really good. Like, he didn't make me do too much on days where I just wasn't feeling it. He Was. He was really good for me. I gotta give him. Him a lot of credit. He was huge for me in like, my young stupid years when I just didn't realize I needed to do just enough. He. He made me get in there and do just enough. So I got to give you credit biz too, because, like, you being in there made me go in there. I was fucking. You would embarrass me if I didn't show up. So I gotta give you a little credit.
Biz Nunez
But, buddy, you were great. It was great having a partner and I'm so happy for your entire career and what you've been able to achieve. To go back to the golf quick, now that we got Yan's in the mix, we like to do the sandbagger scrambles, three on three. So we do three on three. Now. We just interviewed Zen and Canopka. He would be a great partner, although he's not a great golfer. He would be unreal for the stories on the course. If you had the ability to pick your two other guys. Who are you going with?
Cal Clutterbuck
Well, I think the. I think the marquee matchup is probably me, Casey, Marty. Right? I mean, that's the line, right?
Yancey Thigpen
That would be sick.
Cal Clutterbuck
It. It. I think the handicaps kind of match up. I think it would be like a pretty good fair fight. And I think, like, you know, at this point, we're kind of a package deal.
Biz Nunez
Would you do it in Boston this summer?
Cal Clutterbuck
I can do it whenever you want.
Biz Nunez
We should maybe do it that Boston date after.
Yancey Thigpen
Where did you join in Long Island.
Cal Clutterbuck
I met Plan Dome Country Club, which is like the local club down the street that, like, is a good little track. Great membership, guys, like, great hangout.
Yancey Thigpen
What's your favorite track on the Hamptons? I mean, there's so much there, the bridge, all that, like. What do you. What do you enjoy most out there there?
Cal Clutterbuck
I like. I really like national.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah, that place is ridiculous. I actually played national one time and I. You get, you know how you go and you do the big lunch before. It's like a big thing, right? Yeah. So I went there. We got there like two and a half hours before the tea time, and I got to the first tea, Buddy. I was crippled. Like, I was like, drinks. Yeah. And I was trying to, like, you know, just get a nice little buzz and. And it ruined. I played it one time. It was. I could. I couldn't even see. And it wasn't like when I get good when I'm drunk. I was just smothered.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah.
Yancey Thigpen
So I need to play again. So I don't really remember the background.
Cal Clutterbuck
That's like Jimmy Veazy played with Nash and Kevin Hayes, and he slept from hole 11 to 18 in the cart, didn't play a single hole because he.
Biz Nunez
Was so buckled off. These infusions, you can't.
Army Armstrong
You can't go there early, ferment them.
Cal Clutterbuck
All winter long, and then you drink, like, one and a half them, and you are smothered.
Army Armstrong
Smothered.
Yancey Thigpen
Smothered bits.
Biz Nunez
But it matters.
Yancey Thigpen
It's like, it's next. It's next to Shinnecock. So it's just like the best golf in the world on this little peninsula in Long Island.
Biz Nunez
I don't even know what words you guys are saying.
Cal Clutterbuck
Automatically you crushed. When you play there, no matter what.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah.
Cal Clutterbuck
They make South Sides. And then, like, I. I played with a couple guys out there where you sit at that little halfway house for, like, two hours, and you're just like, oh, we have to play the back nine. I'm like, I got. Got three South Sides and two Dark and Stormies. I mean, I'm just kind of crawling up the 18th.
Biz Nunez
Well, you were gonna hop in when Whit was talking about the golf. You said you're a bit of a history guy or something.
Cal Clutterbuck
I love. I love. I love the old golf courses. I love the golf courses that have been around for, like, 120 years, and there's so many of them around here. Yeah, because it's just like the pictures in the clubhouse just show you what it was originally and, like, how it started and why it started, and. And then that old windmill's been there forever. And, you know, I mean, when you play a lot of golf and you're a golf nerd, like, you like the architecture, you like certain people's designs, you don't like other people's designs. And I think national kind of like, checks all the boxes. Although I will say the back nine at Shinny might be, like, the best.
Yancey Thigpen
Nine holes in the world.
Cal Clutterbuck
Didn't you and Frankie played it from the US Open tees one time when they had the open there in 18. And I was just like, I played maybe as good as I could play, and I just barely broke 80. And I was like, holy shit. Like, these guys are on a different. Different level, you know, going up and shooting numbers and competition like they're on a different plan.
Yancey Thigpen
Yeah, no doubt. Well, Clutter, one last question.
Biz Nunez
It was more of an Islanders question for now. And since you're basically a general manager, I believe Noah Dobson's up for contract this summer. What do you think he should get paid? And is he the real deal? And is he a foundational player that you could add to the core group to build around? Because I think that he's going to want a pretty hefty tag. We know what his offensive skill set are, but, like, what, what do you look at him as?
Cal Clutterbuck
Well, I think I, I think from a general manager's perspective, there's a number. I think from Noah's perspective, there's a number. And the number that always ends up happening is the number in the middle. So the number in the middle is probably. I don't know, I mean, I couldn't even say it's probably like in the Sevens and, you know, it's probably term. Cause he's like 23 years old. I think he's capable of doing whatever he wants to do. I think he's actually the one thing that I might have been a little bit gun shy with with Noah is just his ability to, like, defend hard and like, just be strong enough to contain some of the best players on the other team. Like when Barkov comes it in, like, can you handle him? Can you handle Tkachuk below the goal line? And he showed flashes of it, but, but he, he wasn't consistent with it. And I think this year he actually took the mentality of, like, he, he did sacrifice a lot of his offensive side to, to really go out and show people that he could be that guy. And he really needed to be that guy because, like, Pelik and Pollock have both been hurt for long stretches over time, and he's really been. And become the guy. And, and here's my, my, my indicator for him is that the more minutes he plays, the better he is. So, like, for any D man, some D man are great at 18 minutes, 15 minutes, 17 minutes. You put him up to 22 and you start to see the holes or the chink in the armor. I think with Noah, the more he plays, the more he produces and the more opportunity you give him, the better he does. So to me, that's the biggest indicator. And like, again, he's a great kid who loves the game, he's dedicated to it, he works on it. He's going to continue to get better. I mean, you could, I would never like if he. Whatever he ends up getting is just not going to be a bad number for him. You know, I, I just think you could give him, obviously, like, there's, there's numbers that are too high for everybody, but I think the number I Mentioned give or take million dollars. However it ends up, you can give him that for term. Be confident that he's going to be there for you. Like, consistently.
Yancey Thigpen
You give him. He had over 80 points. Like, like, if he signed 8 times 8, I'd be thrilled. As an Islanders fan, I'm sure he wants a little bit more, but.
Biz Nunez
Yeah, but that. But he just touched on it. It's the defensive side where it's like, oh, sick. You put up 80 points, but you're getting burnt every night. I think that the eight times a.
Cal Clutterbuck
Lot of money with doing that.
Yancey Thigpen
Oh, you can, but you're looking at two guys who did.
Cal Clutterbuck
Oh, yeah.
Biz Nunez
Holy. Couple all star jerseys. But you never made eight. You're talking about.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, true.
Yancey Thigpen
Different game now. All right, Clutter, you're a legend. We're gonna be in touch because we have like four days in Boston and maybe you can call the. The old line, Casey and Marty, get him going and that would be a hell of a matchup.
Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, I'd love to do it. I've been waiting to do it forever. I've been texting biz. I love to get out there with you guys and. And slap it around to come off.
Yancey Thigpen
The wagon for that one.
Biz Nunez
I would come off the wagon, but we'd have to ask Lou first, so. Thanks for joining.
Yancey Thigpen
All right, Clutter.
Cal Clutterbuck
Hey, could you imagine? I show up to the first te with. With Marty and Lou and that's.
Yancey Thigpen
That was our three suit and Lou smashes one down the middle.
Biz Nunez
Yeah. He pulls out a bag. He's like, you want to bump?
Yancey Thigpen
Jesus Christ.
Cal Clutterbuck
That would be awesome. I. I can't wait for that. It's going to be a great time.
Biz Nunez
Love it. Can't wait for it. Hope he brings the Colombian. That's a. That's a wrap.
Yancey Thigpen
Thank you so much to Cal Clutterbuck. Awesome interview. Wrapping things up. We do want to announce Thursday, 5:30, Army Greensboro Gargoyles releasing the jerseys for their inaugural season that begins, I believe, October 18th.
Biz Nunez
We'll be there.
Yancey Thigpen
We'll be there 5:30 Thursday at Piedmont Hall. Maybe G just said, but 5:30 Thursday and we've seen these things, boys.
Army Armstrong
Are they roller hockey? Actually, I haven't seen them. Are they roller hockey? Do they look like roller hockey? You know, roller hockey looks.
Biz Nunez
National league. We might get relegated to the top league.
Army Armstrong
Okay, I like this. I seen. I seen you guys are signing players and stuff now it's coming out. They're taking the glass out from behind the bench for you guys. When you're sitting there sitting behind the guys like the Patrick Wa with the Terjon interview for Biz to be barking at the boys just flexing, just sitting there, piss diaper boiling.
Biz Nunez
I'm gonna put Jerry Jones to shame by the time this first season's over.
Yancey Thigpen
But Goshen should come sing the anthem for he should.
Army Armstrong
He would be unbelievable. You guys would be amazed actually. Fantastic.
Yancey Thigpen
That would be pretty sick.
Army Armstrong
That's exciting though.
Biz Nunez
Thursday at 5:30 we're probably going to head to three games this year where we're doing like promotions and and putting on an event including that home opener. So make sure you get your tickets now folks. It's going to be a great time. And Army, I hope you and Merles and the whole game notes crew are able to come as well. So maybe Elio, maybe we do like a Mr. Ice Night there or something. So it's going to be awesome. And we're so grateful to be partnered up with the city of Greensboro and obviously the Gargoyles. So inaugural season coming up and we're going to make some headways.
Yancey Thigpen
All right. We will be back to you next week. Army. Great catching up with you dude. Awesome to hear you had a great summer. Biz busy the bed wetter but another awesome time with you. Can't wait for people to see this video of this tournament. It the Internet Invitational. We'll be back. Peace.
Army Armstrong
We got a squirter Biz.
Cal Clutterbuck
We got a squirter.
Yancey Thigpen

Cal Clutterbuck
If I.
Biz Nunez
Don'T know the other.
Cal Clutterbuck
Way this spirit is so hard to break.
