Me and Ryan have been officially welcomed to the jungle that is Barstool Sports.
G
I brought it towards the coyotes and I asked him if it was okay if I joined the Spit Chuckles podcast full time.
Biz Nasty
Ryan Whitney's got a pink Whitney out there now. The song man is a full time member. Marley just got an assist from Chris B. Whoa.
Keith
We're buzzing right now.
Biz Nasty
What is up everyone? Pinkies up. Pinkies up for episode 644 of Spitting Chiclets. I was gonna say biz, what time's the show start? But there he is. He's ready to go. Pinky's up. He was probably just. He's. He might be back on the booze and he was maybe getting a little Pink Whitney. Quack.
Keith
Pregame.
G
I was getting a nice little Americano.
Biz Nasty
Okay, Americano. That's your drink. Well, my drink's Pink Whitney. That's everyone's drink in the playoffs. That's everyone's drink in the summer. The beach, the golf course, the lake, the boat. It doesn't matter where you are. Go get a bottle of pink. Whitney. Pinkies up. What an incredible, incredible couple days since we last recorded. I hope everyone had the chance to maybe tune into our live stream. Wednesday was that, no Tuesday night. What night was that? G. Tuesday night of the, of the Avalanche just taking control of this series over the Wild. We'll get into that. But it was right after some of the funniest content. I, I couldn't make up the content we got. And for anyone who's maybe a little behind, I'll just quickly rehash Biz is done with the Leafs. It was, it was a very, I'd say, enormous moment in this show. Years and years of just loving the Leafs hometown team. And he quit. And he had his reasons. And what happens after, what happens after is something I'll never forget, God willing. I'm 90 years old, I'm laying in a bed old, can't even move. And then somebody says, remember that draft lottery? 20, 26. And I just. Because not only did the Leafs get the first overall pick and now more than likely taking Gavin McKenna, who Biss said he was just gonna follow to whatever team he went to, the number 12. I mean, the fact it was the
G
number 12, man, this is, that's Gary giving me the double barre.
Biz Nasty
Gary giving you the dough about. And I mean, I don't even know who the guy was with the unkept beard that was behind the balls. It was like, I don't know where that guy came from.
G
He's a barstool guy. Yeah, he, he's one of the whack pack.
Keith
Yeah, he's prototypical barstool.
G
Look, I think I thought he was Bluntman's assistant. That's what somebody told me.
Biz Nasty
I mean, another aspect, just to add to more of the Chiclets content stream is just G going on a rant about what he's gonna do with the sixth overall pick he's getting from Toronto. And boom, the Maple Leafs come out of nowhere. They win the lottery. Gavin McKenna will be a Toronto Maple Leaf. Unless they're just, I think they'll be beyond dumb if they don't take.
G
Well, I, I, I actually spoke to him and I told him, I gave him an ultimatum. I said, if you go to the Toronto Maple Leafs, we're no longer in the fishing business together. So, no, it's not a guarantee. I think it's up in the air right now. I think he's taking a real strong look at the business opportunity with the right hook fishing lure and how that could probably put a lot more money in his pocket than, than MLSC and Rogers can. Especially on an entry level contract which we know are not very good. All thanks to the 100th guest on game notes, Alexander. When he signed his, his fancy signing bonus, all of a sudden that was an end to that.
Keith
So yeah, thanks a lot.
G
Yeah, I have my reasons. Obviously there's Leafs fans online who are like, oh, you're gonna, you're gonna ditch our team because, because you're, because Arizona didn't sign a washed up 40 year old hockey player and you're going to be poopy pants. Like this is some charity league. They have no idea what they're talking about, these people. Yeah, zero.
Keith
Yeah, it's zero clue what that guy did. Shane Doan, we're talking about what he did and I don't even know if he wanted to play another year. Whether he did or not, whether he wanted to be a part of the team, whether he wanted to play goal, if he wanted to play goalie the next year, I would have let him. The guy was the only reason that the Coyotes were even in there as long as they were in, in Phoenix. So just an absolute meathead. Whoever just thinks you're doing it just for that reason, there's a lot more behind it. And like yeah, I love the fact that you're as loyal as you are. You're as loyal as a dog. Even though you get all of your dogs stolen, it stinks, I hate it. But it's one of those things, man. Like you are a loyal dog and I love you for it.
Biz Nasty
I, I, I also gotta just, just shout out like you know, Scott Van Pelt, Stanford Steve, they're talking about biz after the game that night. It's just the, the, the forget also the Sharks getting the second overall pick. That's even more incredible because now they're just okay, so they don't even have to make the decision.
G
Which is nice.
Biz Nasty
If you are somebody who says it's Stenberg or McKenna and it's somewhat of a battle. Oh well, whoever they don't take, we got. And if it is Stenberg, it's like wow. And now people have said they have to take a D. I kind of get that. But if you're talking about a generational type player then I think you take best player available, you figure it out. I mean unless one of the defensemen is considered a future number one Chris Pronger style defenseman, 25 minutes a night. PP PK. You think about it. But it was just wild how it all went down.
G
It was. Why it was a movie.
Keith
It was, it was literally. It was like Ryan Seacrest went into the NHL office. He was like, hey, just let me do two days. Let me get two days. I'll put this hockey world on their head. Just give me two days. And he did it. NHL went over to Bravo for one day, got all the ratings up and then boom, now it's back to real hockey.
G
Yeah, the Bachelorette was like, you know, they did their thing and the NHL is like, hold my beer.
Biz Nasty
Grinnelli's saying here the Sharks are going to sign Radish over the summer. Have you been told? You got.
Keith
He said that last night in the group chat.
Biz Nasty
I got inside info on that one.
R.A.
No, it just, it makes too much Sense. They have 40 million cap space next year, 82 mil the year after that. They still have to sign Will and Mack, but you go sign him, maybe
Biz Nasty
a pair him with Dickinson.
R.A.
That kid they got 11th overall a few years ago, played in London. I think it's, it's the, that's the number one.
Biz Nasty
I think they only have 2D signed.
Keith
Did you see, did you see Radish's year end meeting too? Like the conference with the.
R.A.
He's gone.
Keith
He sounded like he's gone.
Juice
Really.
Marley
I mean, Dimitri Orloff is the highest
Biz Nasty
paid player on the San Jose Sharks
Marley
right now, making 6.5 million.
Biz Nasty
They have to spend money somewhere. Well, they're going to be spending a ton of it. I. Then I think a report came out from Chris John. Was it Johnston saying maybe Matthews, like isn't sure if he's going to go back? I don't really know. You kind of see all these different reports.
G
So like I think that they're, they're going to be in a solid spot. Like getting that first overall pick changes everything. And also if, if Matthews does decide he wants to leave, like it wouldn't be the worst thing if they stripped it to the ground because the return on even him and Nylander alone, like, you know, you could build around Cowan, you can build around McKenna, obviously. And then the return you could get. If you're sending those guys out the door, I imagine you're getting three to four first round picks. Hopefully they're high first round picks and then probably like, like two to three roster players, including a few prospects. So you get a boatload in return and then the timeline would match up a little bit. But also you got Cowan on entry level, you got McKenna on entry level. So that's going to save you some, some money for some skilled top six winger. Of a sudden, you know, your cap situation's not horrendous with the fact that it's going up what, eight and a half million? Because that was one thing that was announced. So, so for the Leafs going from the. Where their cap's going to now getting the first overall pick, a lot has changed to the fact that I don't. I could see them making playoffs next year. The only thing they have going against them is the fact that the Atlantic is still going to be very difficult. And you know, I mean the, the, the east in general is going to be a gauntlet. So do you agree that they could turn around and be a playoff team? They have solid goaltending. The one thing that, that you're hearing through the grapevine is that Matthews is like, we need a few puck moving D, man. I can't keep playing the way that we played last year. Like, it's nauseating. I need to have the puck on my stick. I lost marner. I can't even be given and go keeping go. I can't give and go through the neutral zone. So I, I feel like they could solve a lot of their problems with the fact that they have cap space available. A couple studs on entry level deals and. Or moving off some guys.
Biz Nasty
I, I kind of love when we're chatting about teams and yeah, you need puck moving D or they, this team,
G
they don't grow on trees. Right?
Biz Nasty
Well, that's. I was just gonna say like GM is. That's tough, man. Like you could throw out what every team needs. Like actually getting it done for sure. To me it seems impossible. Like I have no GM ability in me. Like I'm looking around, I wouldn't even know where to start. That's probably why we're doing this. Just throwing out hot takes that never land. I just think like where, how do you go do it? And the, the Leafs don't have a ton of assets. Right? So I don't know that's a problem. I did see their lineup. Somebody tweeted up their lineup next year.
G
It's not horrendous.
Biz Nasty
Kind of. I, I don't know. Kind of look decent, actually.
G
It looks decent.
Biz Nasty
Yeah. Horrendous. Sorry.
Keith
So Bill, are you.
G
It looks decent.
Keith
Are you more for. Kind of leave it the way it is. Have Matthews, Nylander stay, try to make playoffs next year or you want him to blow it up now?
G
I don't. Well, first of all, I don't care. I don't give a. But obviously it's a team that just got the. Yeah. Like, you know, it's, it's kind of, it's kind of invigorating, actually. It's kind of nice.
Biz Nasty
And for people who didn't. Didn't catch the live stream. I'll never forget this moment as well, when he said what I've been saying for years, the biggest loser fan base in the league. And just to hear it come out of his mouth, it was.
Keith
Yeah, it was beautiful.
Biz Nasty
I was just a lot.
G
That was more me lashing out at the amount of people not knowing why I actually left to begin with and not it not clicking right. Like some of those people. They're just so stupid or never, never click with them. And also, they've never been part of something where they have that much loyalty to an individual. They must not ever have had that in their life. So they wouldn't understand it to begin with. So why would I just, why would I constantly beat my head and try and explain it to him? Right?
Biz Nasty
Hey, hey, I'm built for that.
G
If there's one guy who's built for that, it's me getting peppered in the brain. But, but here. But I would be curious to know what other Leafs fans think about what the approach should be. I would, I wouldn't be shocked if half of them would be okay if. With a great return from Matthews and Nylander and, and maybe starting fresh a little bit. I, I. Do you think I'm crazy with that?
Keith
I. Yeah, I think they think because they got first overall pick that the cup is theirs next year.
Biz Nasty
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Keith
They had parades going outside the.
Biz Nasty
Well, yeah, but winning the fir, Winning the lottery, I mean, that's a big deal. That's excitement. Now. I don't think they got to be completely deranged, which. Look, we're looking at a guy who's been deranged for a long time and was a Leafs fan. So you understand, like, they might think that, but. No, no way.
G
But, but, but they're not deranged in thinking that now that they had the first overall pick, it is completely revived their opportunity to potentially compete. The issue is going to be no first round pick the next two years after this because they're giving away. They don't have a strong prospect pool. So how are you going to. Unless you're going to do your Damage in free agency as, as Wick pointed out, there's not a lot available and they're not a team that's playing with a ton of cap space to begin with. And also, is Toronto a big landing spot for free agents compared to, like, the way that other teams are kind of on the rise and coming up, like, like you talked about Radish, like, to me, to go, not disappear, but go play in San Jose, fly under the radar. I mean, same. You're basically dealing with the same taxes you are in Toronto and you go get to play with that young group of guys who are, who are going to keep getting better and better year over year, including getting the second overall pick that we don't know could end up turning out. Like, look at, look at Leo Carlson. Like, wasn't Leo Carlson second overall or Leo Carlson's incredible.
Keith
He's so good.
G
So, so you might be dealing with another one of him going over there in, in Stenberg. Is that how you pronounce his last name? Stenberg?
Biz Nasty
Yes.
Keith
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Ivan Ivar Stenberg. I don't know. So I'll say also, like the Leafs. There's excitement there.
G
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
But there's still a lot of questions to remain. Now, I, I love the O dog. We've talked a lot about the O Dog we had him on during Olympics. I kind of appreciated his point of everyone, let's, let's give Chaika a chance here. And I think Leafs fans, maybe they've turned around and the luck of getting the first overall. Let's, let's kind of. Let's kind of give him, give him a chance, see what he can do.
G
Everything when everything I said, I've, I've, I reiterated this a few times. I have no ill will to what he has going on moving forward.
Keith
Right.
G
I've repeated that over and over. I don't, I don't. Maybe the guy goes on to have success. I have no clue. The only reason I'm off the train is what happened when he was a member of the Arizona Coyotes organization and what happened and the way it was left. And let's not forget how it was left here. I explained that on the live stream. Did we explain it last podcast about the situation with the New Jersey situation. So I think that there were a lot of character flaws early on. Like, and there's a laundry list of them. Growth is important. He's gotten a lot older, maybe a lot wiser. I mean, Frosty sales were up 28 when he was in charge of Wendy's, so he could Figure a lot of things out.
Keith
Really great.
G
Frosties are apparently in Canada. I don't know.
Biz Nasty
He worked at Frosty. I think.
G
I think. I think his family are. He married into where his. I think maybe his wife's family owned like, Wendy's chains. Like, they have like a bunch of the restaurants.
Biz Nasty
They have like 60 of them.
G
Wow, 60 Wendy's across Canada or something like that.
Keith
So he's not taking this job for the money?
Biz Nasty
No, for him. What was I. Oh, also the confusion around the draft picks the next two years. Just quickly. I read now it is one of the most confusing setups I've ever seen. If the Leafs have a top 10 pick next year, they choose Philly or Boston. You imagine that they choose Philly, right?
G
100%.
Biz Nasty
And then if it's not top 10, it goes to Philly and the next year's goes to Boston. Probably getting 20, 28. The league is going to come in and.
R.A.
And actually make them decide soon on this because the other teams need to trade these assets. They need to know moving forward, they can't just wait until Toronto wants to make this decision. So from what I was told, it's going to be Philadelphia 2027 and Boston 2028.
Keith
Okay. Yeah, that would make more sense because if you left it going as long as like, up until the draft, and the Philly would be like, hey, take Meech Cobb off of us. And then, you know, like, they could. They could sweeten the pot for some deals and stuff like that. So they definitely have to get that done as soon as possible.
Biz Nasty
We. Speaking of Philly, man. Oh, they. They had that game key. Yeah, they had it. We're gonna get into it. We're gonna have Merles on them. We're having Drew son Kevin bxa. But before we get to them, before we get to Murn talk about the playoffs and the games and what's happened, we got tough. DraftKings. The playoffs are here. They're going. They're buzzing. What do we got? Buffalo, Montreal.
Biz Nasty
Where is the merman? Mer, what's going on, buddy? Oh, yeah.
G
Oh, he's dripping a little bit, but not as bad
Biz Nasty
one. Nothing is right. Mer, before we actually break this, this first game one of Buffalo, Montreal down the playoff trends, boys, I wanted to bring this up. You know, do I make things about me sometimes. Yeah, maybe sometimes.
G
All right, we love that. We love that about you.
Biz Nasty
But since 1996, four teams have taken a 30 series lead in each of their first two series. The 2024 Rangers, the 2012 Kings, the 2008 Penguins, and the 97 Flyers. Okay, I'm only bringing this up because it was at the top of the outline. I was on that Penguins team. We went up three zero in the first three rounds, boys. We went up three. Zero in the first three rounds. And I guess I'll kind of save that for Carolina and Colorado because that's more, you know, matters to them. But Mer, Buffalo and Montreal, they kicked it off. I gotta be. I gotta be quite honest. They didn't have much. I, I felt like I should have known that as a gambler. It's like after that, just that win that the, the emotion of Game 7 on the road, you had to think they'd be let down a little bit. And Buffalo and Josh Doane and Zach Benson, they were ready to go.
Marley
Yeah, you should know it as a player, too. We remember in those game, Sevens and Wilkes, Barry. But they would always warn us, guys, it's going to be a huge letdown that next game. And the Sabers were ready for once. They were ready that first period. They jumped all over them. But I thought maybe the rest of the game, Montreal might have. Might have outplayed them a little bit. They, I know they outshot them, but Buffalo had the timely scoring and they got the power play going again.
Biz Nasty
If they score on the power play, that's, that's an issue for anyone. They're playing because they hadn't done anything against the Bruins. And I think leading into the playoffs, they'd really struggled in the regular season, too. So if you can get it going now, the first goal, that was Doane's goal, I believe. The beautiful.
Keith
Oh, my God.
Biz Nasty
Brutal luck for Hudson just kind of hit the boards. I lost where he was, falls down. Benson, I, I gotta say, Dobson coming back and play, played a great game seven. Probably the worst played two on one I've ever seen. It was just kind of a. It was like a Whitney slide.
G
Whitney's hockey school.
Biz Nasty
You got it. If you're slided, you gotta get. He slid. And Benson was just like, oh, okay. But a great pass and all of a sudden it's one nothing. Was that the picture we had sent in the group chat of Shane Doane celebrating the exact. I'm sorry, Josh Stone celebrating the exact same. Was that the assist he had no,
Keith
it was the one where he just screened in front of the net. He. I don't even think he had anything to do with the goal. It was the, the Byron. Byron goal.
G
Yeah, okay, that was, that was so that was late on the power play. I believe that was their third one of the game. And tough clear. That's a tough clear. I think it was Matheson who just basically turned it right over. Gotta go. Glass and out. But boys, I, you know, we see this a lot now. The first unit, they get the first minute and a half and you know, Buffalo's first unit hadn't really got much going. Second unit scored both power play goals for them yesterday. And they got some skilled players on there. They got Benson and Donor who are willing to go to the net front. They just keep it simple. And then they. Their D, they're mobile and good enough to. To have a good second unit. And you saw it with Bo Byron, the way he's able to skate, walk the line and fire that pill. So huge, huge, huge game. Benson as as big of a rat as he is. Fuck, man. He is a skilled, good player. And when he's on the forecheck, he's always got his stick in the right lane. He's always disrupting like making it hard on D where they're second guessing their first option. It stalls that guy just long enough so you can get closed in on him and get pucks turned over. And even on that, that pass back door to donor like him selling that shot like fuck. He looked like David Posternak selling that shot. He kicks the leg up like he's pissing on the fire hydrant. And then Dovis drops that right leg so he can't push off really anymore. And you mentioned the two on one played by Dobson. My God. What, What? The game for them. And then, and then of course getting that 2o goal. And I mean talk about donor. 1 and 1 in the first period. Like he, he stripped Anderson the slot. I was one on three right there. And he slides it. He knows exactly where Benson is and Benson knows exactly where McLeod is. Back door. So a great start to the game. And I didn't think that they were going to be sleepy off the start. They were sleepy off the start. Their first three home games of the first round and they couldn't come in sleep. And especially against a team mur like you mentioned, like who came off an emotional game seven in Tampa.
Marley
Yeah, I want to go back to that second unit power play. Put my little coaching hat on.
G
Oh, okay.
Marley
Explain to the people what happened out there, their second unit, and what. This is what used to happen in the old days. You had your one first unit one minute and then the second minute. And as a penalty killer, you hate it if they had two different setups, if they had a umbrella on one side, if they had the box and one. So the second unit now used the box and one that you don't see anymore, because this one three one is almost unbeatable on the power play because you always know where somebody's open. But that's what happened. Montreal penalty killers got caught, stuck in. Oh, this is how we play one three one. All we do is play one three one. Oh, what the hell is this? The boxing one worked just even on the McLeod one because of their setup. You see Doan's in the middle and he knows he can whack it. Either way, one of those guys are going to be open because the D converge on him, and they got a lot of chances from that. And. And it was a huge adjustment by Seth Appert in the Buffalo Sabers.
G
Murray, you don't think it was because it was a broken play. Like, both of them were kind of broken plays.
Marley
Yeah, but you're in those positions. If you're in those 131 position, they will. All three guys wouldn't have been down near the post like that.
G
Well, but like. So on the second one, it was like a turnover broken play where Deno ran out, Right?
Marley
Yeah, but I'm sure that earlier in that power play, just to get the momentum and get everybody scrambling around, it was set up like that. You moved it up, sent the one clip where the D walks in, but just has them all kind of unsure of what they should be doing. Where 131 penalty killers, like, oh, I always do that. I always do that. But it has them confused, is probably a better way to say.
G
So you're saying 131 for the penalty killers.
Biz Nasty
No, that's the power.
G
No, I. I know, but he. The way he just said it, he
Marley
said, yeah, but if you're a penalty killer, you know, like, okay, it's a one three one. I always push down the boards here, and then it comes underneath me and I go out.
G
You got two flankers with that front guy, bumper guy in the middle, and one guy up top.
Marley
And. And Keith probably knows this as a power play guy. I remember we would do that on a power play. This is in Europe, when I was actually a PP guy. And you would start in a box in one and get Them thought like that then you would rotate to an umbrella. Did you do stuff like that, Keith? Inside a two minute power play?
Keith
What like switching up? No, not really. It was kind of. I, I think the best power plays having some structure and then just kind of, I mean everybody on the ice is good enough to get open and make plays and nowhere to be. So I think you have to have a lot of freedom too within the power play to let guys have the freedom to move around. Yeah, you always want somebody in front of the net. You always want the flank guy. But I think having like a set set like actual like where you're going to be is kind of obsolete a little bit now. Like they're kind of guys are free flowing and, and just going out there and using their hockey senses more than just kind of being in a spot.
G
How would you play against the 13 1? You're saying set up in a diamond. That's usually how they're doing it.
Marley
Yeah. And then the diamond doesn't work on the box in one. If you can see it that way. You know what that means like.
Biz Nasty
Oh yeah, I see what you're saying. I mean I would think that they'd be all over that though in the pre scout. But like you're saying when it switches that quick, right, like it is, it is difficult to just kind of wrap your mind around like all right, this is a completely different setup. But Keith's right at least in, you know, in the runs the Oilers had to the finals, they, they would have somewhat of a setup and then it was just freewheeling. Now granted that's McDavid and Leon, but even you watch Colorado, they're kind of all over the place and we will get into Minnesota. God damn, what a disaster their power play is. But Buffalo, I, I felt as though the game. Buffalo did kind of a good job. You're saying maybe Montreal outplayed him a little bit, but it seemed like, it seemed like the arena was a little quiet even in the third period.
G
Buffalo had more scoring chances than shots on net. They had, they had seven. I think they finished with 16 shots on net or 17.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, oh yeah. Because they hit the post on the
G
one post they had. They had one more scoring chance than they, they had shots on net. So the quality, yeah, the quality of opportunity. So they had 17 scoring chance on 16 shots and the quality of, of opportunities they had. There was a lot of breakdowns for Montreal. Montreal still were in the double digits in grade eight chances. I, I felt like a lot of theirs came in the third period as they drastically outshot him and Buffalo sat back a little bit. But, man, Lyon was pretty good, man. He wasn't giving out sloppy rebounds like he. He made very timely saves and some. A little bit of puck luck, too. I think Lane Hudson early on went double doink off the post crossbar.
Keith
But I. I also don't think it's time to panic. Like, I was talking to our guy Woody last night. He was on the Stranglers and he was like, you know, panicking almost about losing that game one. But I think they can take some good things. They out hit them, they won the face off, battle outshot them. So I think it's one of those things where Dovish was so good, maybe he took his foot off the gas a little bit and then he's gonna have a nice reset game. One of the goals I didn't love from him, but it's like he's gonna. You're not gonna be good every single game. If you can split here in Buffalo, it's a win and try to get, you know, come back home one, one.
G
I think it's a different. A different ball game, though. I think that Buffalo does a way better job of getting guys in front of the net and they're better at elevating the puck. Which one didn't you like? The Greenway goal.
Keith
Greenway. Yeah. Yeah, because it hit his glove, right?
G
Yeah. There was somebody flying by, like there was a drive by. So I don't know if. Sometimes when you get those cross bodies, it's hard to track the puck. But if you go to. I mean, two of the goals were east to west, and then two of the other goals I view as screens. Like Donor. He couldn't see, right. So they got some. They got some big lanky forwards up front for Buffalo, and dovish is what, 6, 4, 6 5. So if they keep getting traffic in front. Now, you guys were in the chat. You guys wanted to see Fowler in there, right?
Biz Nasty
Thinking about it now, three of the goals, I don't really think you. You can't fault them on the Dome. You can't fault them on the McLeod. You can't fault them on the Byram. Considering the scre. I guess maybe the third, it might have. Only it might have been more just like, hey, reset.
Keith
Yeah, but.
Biz Nasty
But I think when Greenway makes it three one, it's like the game's still so alive. It's not like you're pulling them. All right, this game's over. So I kind of get not doing It Greenway, he was unbelievable. I know.
G
Huge.
Biz Nasty
And. And if that guy gets going, like, because I don't. He didn't, you know, have a great year necessarily. Right. He might not even be in the lineup of Carrick's playing and healthy and he looked awesome. It actually reminded me remember the time in Montreal when Steve Beijing were you on the team when he had a first period. He was flying around, dominating and Terry and came in, he's like, Steve Beijing looked like Wayne Gretzky.
G
What, the little guy?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, because he was talking a little feisty guy.
Marley
I don't know that game. I remember the story.
Biz Nasty
Dangling everyone. It was like Greenway was dominating.
Juice
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
That shift behind the net too. We made a bunch of great plays. But it reminded me center ice, couple
G
big hits, toe drag center ice. You know, you're feeling it when Green likes toe dragon middle of the ice.
Biz Nasty
And. And I think it was very similar though to Philly first game winning an emotional game seven on oh, game six. Sorry. And then going in and you're kind of just like overwhelmed a little bit. And then they had an awesome response. They didn't get the win. But I think Montreal comes, comes back out, you see a better game. But yeah, no reason to panic for Canadian defense at all.
Keith
Hey, why wasn't Gallagher in? Why was Buddy.
G
Hey, Bellino, I'll. I'm gonna double down on that take. And my apologies for saying, oh, they're gonna remember Gallagher in 15 years. They're gonna remember him regardless.
Keith
Right.
G
But I think that if you're Martin St. Louis, you pull him aside and you said your job is to get under Benson's skin and make him a complete non factor because Benson ran their show first shift. He had. Or maybe it was second. He was in the crease. You got Anderson and a D man punching him. Just getting right under their skin. So I think that you send one of the. To today's standards, one of the OG small guys, pain in the ass boys right after the new school one.
Keith
Yeah.
G
And he's got to try to show him who's daddy now. Bull Byrom Bolton Rat Mama Bo Byram. He got the puck post game like the. The MVP of the game for the Buffalo Sabres. And Montreal wasn't happy with their game, but Buffalo wasn't the happiest with theirs either. Like they, they were not like in the, in the room after they know that they got to be better as well. So I, I love that out of them. Yes. I expect better from Buffalo as well. So got to be a split what, what did you guys think of the amount of red in the lower bowl? I was still pretty shocked that it was that much.
Marley
I'm not happy with that. But they say it's even worse in the regular season.
R.A.
Yes.
Marley
All you Southern Ontario people biz that get the cheap tickets compared to Toronto. They come down and I know people were like flooding social media and the news in Buffalo. They don't even want people wearing red like randomly going to church or going to, to Wegmans grocery store.
Keith
They're like, no shout out Wegmans.
Marley
But yeah, I, I was a little disturbed by that. But I guess there's nothing you can do that they, they might own some, a lot of the season tickets, the Canadian people. And then they sell off the games they don't want.
G
Oh yeah, blame Canada. So, hey, blame Canada.
Biz Nasty
I did get a kick out of Benson in the post game press conference. There was a question asked him and him and Greenway and Green was like, why don't you take that one? And he's like, he's like, I, I wasn't even listening.
G
I have the attention span of a goldfish.
Marley
Hey, Greenwood, right now, Benson, he is just, he calls it a hockey city the other day and another press thing, he is just running that city until Josh Allen.
G
I got a buddy who went to the game and he was like, I just bought a Benson jersey.
Biz Nasty
Can you play this clip?
Keith
I bet he's leading sales in jerseys since like playoffs started for that team.
G
Here we go.
Juice
This is for both of you guys. Canadiens are very different team from the
R.A.
Bruins with the way that they play,
Juice
probably some more time and space.
Keith
What's the adjustment like going from playing that team to playing this team?
Juice
You had a couple of days to
Keith
prepare, but I'm just curious, you know,
Juice
what the feeling out process was like,
Keith
even though you, you know them fairly
G
well taken away better.
Biz Nasty
Well, I was thinking you're going to answer.
Juice
I wasn't really listening.
Biz Nasty
I mean, yeah, that's just, that's just. I'm just focused on hockey right now. My family's carnival and then hockey.
G
He's just thinking how he's gonna rip a Southern Ontario guy off for 20
Biz Nasty
bucks for three darts questioner, the guy
Marley
that, the actor that banged the drum, he had a 6 Benson jersey on. He's just, he's the guy right now.
G
Did you see the, the question that they asked Greenway where they're like, hey, we asked coaches to maybe why you're, you're, you know, scoring and figuring out shooting the pill better and he said, you had three goals in practice the other day.
Biz Nasty
He's Joe. He said.
Keith
One of the best nicknames I've ever heard. We did one of those like before camp skates in Naples. I was like, greener, what are you gonna. What are you up to tonight? He was like, I don't know, man. Probably just grab a grease wheel and hit the sticks. I'm like, what the. A grease wheel? He's like a pizza man. I'm like, that's unbelievable. Calling it a grease wheel is beautiful.
G
I like that. I never heard that same.
Marley
I thought you would have heard that biz. My buddy Freighter up in Toronto called him.
Biz Nasty
I didn't know. Greaseway. I did not know. So, boys, final thing you know, before we kind of move on from game
G
one, did Kirby Doc have the nicest goal of playoffs so far with.
Biz Nasty
That was sick. That was sick. Unreal effort. I mean, that makes it. That's a huge goal at that point in the game too. Just the second effort on it on the backhand was phenomenal. I don't know how did they turn it over on the neutral zone? I don't remember exactly. Quite.
G
Yeah, I think it was. Tage Thompson. Thanks for bringing it up. If. If I scored that goal after deactivating my. My Instagram because of Montreal fans coming at me, I would reactivate it and just post a picture of my ball back.
Biz Nasty
Not even the goal, just my.
G
My hairy chewed up bubble gum nutsack right on Instagram. Post it, story it.
Biz Nasty
Caulfield right now through. What would it be for them? Eight games, five on five, zero goals, zero assists, nine shots.
G
So that line has one five on five point so far these playoffs, that.
Biz Nasty
That would be the one thing. As a Canadiens fan, I'm a little like, oh, like this is not gonna last. Whether it's this round or the next round, if they don't. If they don't get going well, they won't last.
Keith
If they don't get going well, that's a good point.
Biz Nasty
And we could talk about what Brindamore did in Carolina, but I'm looking forward to game two. I think. I think Montreal have a much better effort.
G
You think he's banged up with. You think. You think Caulfield's dealing with something?
Biz Nasty
I thought Suzuki was banged up, but he started to look a little better. I mean, I think everyone. Everyone's banged up. I imagine for Caulfield, just a little tougher, tighter. But it's surprising because that line was just so good, right? And Slavkovski made A great pass over to Suzuki. But that was, that was power play, wasn't it?
Keith
Plus minus.
G
Was it Demodov back, though, or you talking about on the goal?
Biz Nasty
On the goal.
G
On the goal. Yeah, yeah.
Biz Nasty
But we had another game last night. And for anyone who thought that Vegas, like Blutman said, he'd be shocked if Vegas lost this series. They've outplayed them both games now. And we can go back to the for the first game of the series. We haven't chatted since the no icing call in game one. I, I, I've seen a lot of people say, no, no, they got it correct. I think that's complete.
G
Who said that? The same Leafs?
Keith
Dave Jackson?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, I mean, there was people who were out there. Like it just does you see the view of where the players, Lacombe and Eichler skating at you? And that's blown down as an icing pretty much 99 out of 100 times. And, and this is five minutes to go in a playoff game. But Anaheim, they played, they outplayed them. Game 1, and they dominated last night. Dominated that game, I think. What did Eichel score? 10 seconds of whatever it was. I couldn't believe the Ducks haven't had a shutout last season or this season.
G
Yeah, 170 games or something. Or maybe 140 games. It's gone where they haven't had a
Biz Nasty
shutout, but it's like, who cares, right? Big, Big dub. Leo Carlson's a problem. I can't believe how good Truba's playing. Maybe
G
he played 65 on 5 minutes against McDavid with Lacombe last series and
Biz Nasty
every shift he's out there like he's so good at never looking at the puck. I mean, granted, he's looking to take your head off every single time, so it makes sense. He's not looking at the puck, but stance guys up at the blue line. Carlson looks great all the. They have depth. Seneca. I mean, that goal was sick, man, because it was kind of in his feet and he was still able to raise it enough to get it over the love of Carter Hart. But I think Anaheim right now, they got to be feeling great about themselves at biz. I know you're, you're on the train of Vegas and really something going special there. But they can't be happy after two games.
G
No, but I so kind of like I go in the first round against Utah was very quiet the first few games, and also they got outplayed in the first few games of that series as well. And I think still one one, right. I think that the speed is hard, but they, I, you know, they're veterans. They find a way to adjust. And I, I think we can all agree that Anaheim has been the better team here. The one thing that Anaheim, if they want to win this series though, they're going to have to figure out their power play. Boys, they're, I believe 0 for 9 right now. They had the 509 early in that game.
Biz Nasty
The 5 on 3 was. It was.
Keith
And they were 5.
Biz Nasty
5 on 3. It was similar to that one against Carolina. It was horrible.
G
Yeah, it was horrific. But man, but yeah, like they just keep coming at you. And you talked about that goal from Seneca like it was Paling and VL on that line with them. And keep in mind Seneca is used to playing top six minutes most of the year. Right. He played 11 minutes last night, but yet was still effective. Adapted to his role playing. Playing a limited role. Where you look at that 4 check. VL gets on there pain in the ass as the F1. Paling does a great job of following up along the wall. He just punts it right back down to vl. And you talked about like Seneca adjusting to that, to that pass and where it was. How about VL being so close to the net, knowing that Carter Hart's going to throw out his stick and his blocker and he gets it over. Hey, was it a nice saucer pass? No, it was a mag. A ragu meat sauce coming at him. But he still got it over that blocker and that stick and right in his wheelhouse in order for them to get it. So that VL man, he's made a huge impact physically. You saw that big hit he threw on dry Seidel and how big of a pain in the ass was in the first round and already in this series makes a huge play, which is essentially the game winning goal because Eichel didn't score till 5 seconds left and they'd already sealed the deal. So what a job. By, by, I mean, Paling was awesome in first round with all the speed that he possesses. So they are getting contributions from everyone and, and yeah, Anaheim looks, looks great. What. What did you. What else did you guys see from. From Vegas that you weren't happy with?
Marley
Well, with Vegas, I was going to talk some coaching more on the Ducks that you guys kind of didn't talk about with your favorite line got broken up. He took out McTavish, he took out Ian Moore and he puts in Johnston and Harkins and, and they Made an impact and switching over to Vegas for the coaching. You cannot pull the goalie with McNabb on the ice. They're down two to nothing. McNabb is on the ice. That's not a guy you want on a six on five, and he knows it. He tries to change in the middle of it when they don't have possession. Gets turned over easy empty netter. Lights out for the Golden Knight. So I see coaching in the. In the Ducks, they put out the regular lines and warm up. He pulls a switcheroo for the game. That line was super effective. I see a huge mistake by Torts on the Vegas side. Coaching. Coaching.
G
Do you think. Do you think Kolasar needs to come out and Smith needs to go back in? Mer?
Marley
Yeah, for sure. Kolasar, I love the guy.
R.A.
He.
Marley
He's gonna have his. He'll be back in at some point, but he's taken two bad penalties now in two games. Really didn't get a lot of ice time. Let's get Smith in there a little more speed, and we'll find another spot for Kolsar later in the series.
Keith
I like how Anaheim didn't change their game much. Like, and I think that, like, Mer was just saying about coaching, like, after Game one, people were all over them and not shooting pucks and making the extra pass and trying to make pretty plays, but that's kind of how they play. And I thought maybe they'd switch it up and play a little bit heavier, but I would imagine. And having played for Q, he went in there and said, hey, listen, we're going to play the way that we've played all year. What. What's got us to this position? Let's just continue to do that. And I thought they did a really good job of just playing the way that they've played all year and throughout this playoffs.
Marley
And.
Keith
And then it gets them that win. And. But going. Going back to the. The icing in Game one, like, there's got to be some accountability for the ref that's in the.
Juice
At.
Keith
At ESPN or AT tnt. Like, whoever.
Biz Nasty
You're all about this.
Keith
He can't. He can't just agree with whatever the call was. Like, he has to say what he really thinks. We all see the play. Couple extra replays. We understand the refs on the ice don't get the extra replay.
Biz Nasty
He's got to call it how it is.
Keith
Am I not. Am I crazy?
G
No, he's got it.
Biz Nasty
He's got a holy union where Hank has a tough time being like that's. A horrible goal. Like, they just. They stick together. I get that. But I just. I was watching that game and. And Quenville's reaction. The best part of Quinnville before this. He was losing his goddamn mind before the goal. As the play's still going on, he's already screaming, not even looking, and then it go in and it's complete. Just an explosion. Now, I'll give Dorothy of credit. That was he. Absolutely. Now, Anaheim was kind of like out to lunch, but he dangled somebody, made a sick pass to Barbershev. But I get Quenville being disgusted. He really calmed down before the press conference, though. He didn't lose his mind. I thought he might just gun.
G
No, he got it out on the bench.
Marley
He caught it all out at the wrong linesman. It wasn't that guy's call.
Biz Nasty
It's the guy on the other association.
Keith
Man, you got.
G
Oh, yeah, right.
Keith
Pipes on. You're gonna get it. But he knew, like Whit said, he's flipping out before they even score. He's been in these situations for 30 years. He knows that. That it could turn into a goal like that. He knows how the hockey world runs. Like, it's those little calls and playoffs matter so much. And he knew before it even went in.
G
Yeah. It's also, you know, Eichel and some of their big dogs on the ice. And the thing is, is Q's on the. The strong side.
Juice
Right.
G
The reason why the. The missed call is so egregious is people are saying, oh, Eichel stretched out his leg, and it's almost like they were tied 50, 50 as they reached the hash mark. While Ty goes to. To Lacombe and the way the puck was dumped in cross corner, Lacombe has body position on him. That's like the puck is on his side of the ice, including where Q's probably staring right at me. And like, there's no way in any world is. Is Eiko getting to that puck before Lacombe because of the way it was dumped and where it was dumped. So very egregious. And I agree with you. Like, it's okay for. For Jackson to say it was a missed call. Like, I'd much rather hear that. I think people are going to be more lenient if they hear your honest truth rather than just trying to back up a bad call where it's like, well, no wonder people hate refs because they. It. Even when they're wrong, they refuse to admit it.
Biz Nasty
Yeah. If you say. Exactly. If you say, like, it's Just so fast. And. Yeah. Kind of botched it. Like, as a fan, I'm like, all right, I kind of get it way more than, like, you're telling me that was the right call. And.
G
Yeah. And.
Biz Nasty
And.
G
And switching to game two. And we're. We're in the group chat about this to take the focus off of that icing is. Is we talked about the rougiette, the dick pill. Well, I'll tell you what. Q ain't gonna need one after the way that the D man and the forwards were laying out for dose. Dostal was out of his crease a couple times, and there were some empty nets. There was four Anaheim Ducks spread. Spread Eagle. Like.
Keith
Like, spread Duck.
Biz Nasty
How about the Grandland Save?
Keith
Grandlin looked like Jagir. JF Jagir in 2000, 2004, or whatever it was. And I swear to God, Q will be in that locker room. He's always in the hallway giving you knuckles.
Biz Nasty
Loves it.
Keith
Loves Knuckles more than anyone in the world. More than Harry Knuckles. But he.
Biz Nasty
He will be in the Holy Gram save. You're gonna play Holy next game. Yeah.
G
Cheering for me like he's Seabiscuit.
Biz Nasty
The. The Leo Carlson goal. While it was a beautiful pass by Terry, right? If you go back and watch it, Kreider brings it in. I think Carlson gave it to Kreider. He brings in, and he kind of, like, goes to drop it, and Carlson misses it. If you watch, though, Brett Howden, he doesn't really stop on the puck. He kind of just goes for a little bit of a skate, and Terry picks it up. He's in the middle of nowhere. Awesome pass. Carlson gets that one over the glove. That might have hit Hard's glove, too, but that makes it two nothing with 13 minutes to go. And Carlson just. I. I know we keep talking about it, but you're. You're literally watching. And this is a. This is just another example of Mers Mer knowing. I mean, Mer's telling us that this is. This should be the first overall pick. Complete fumble. Complete fumble. And now I'm like, watching these games. You're. You're. If. All right, so if you're a Western Conference player and you're watching these games, you're not playing anymore. Your season's over. You're like, holy. Like, I played against this guy. I realize it.
Keith
It.
Biz Nasty
But now to see it in the playoffs, they are set for the future. And hearing about this Roger McQueen kid who's at Providence, like, don't forget they have another top pick coming. Really yeah, like Anaheim. Yeah. They're just my bet against Pasha boys.
Keith
Oh God.
G
He's still delusional. He still thinks he's gonna win that one.
Biz Nasty
No, no, no.
Marley
He knows now on Leo Carlson and the reason I knew it because I was able to go to their games and just watch him. He was 16 years old and he. Where'd he play there in Orebro. And, and, and if you were in that building, you can just see the control he had on the entire game. He's 16 in a men's league. I saw other 16 year olds, they, they didn't have that control. And that's why scouts have to be in the building. I don't want to hear any of these analytic guys that are watching it on the video and watching the numbers. You, you saw him live in person. It was something different. And, and that's why these analytics. I'll never get into them as much as Pacha. It's by the eyeballs and, and even Demers. I saw Demers. Another guy coming over that he should have been a number. He should have been the number one
Biz Nasty
this morning also, shout out pad for Beak. And at that point it was Cronin was the coach. But I'm guessing it was for Beak's idea that if you remember Carlson rookie year, he would play a game or two. Yeah. Stamp coaster one or two. And then he.
G
And then they still had his hips developing.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, he was still growing and stuff like that. But you're watching a guy turn into a superstar and just take over games and then you're. You're seeing like the size of them. I mean, Eichel's enormous and Carlson's just there skating with them. Same type player. It's. I think Anaheim's in a great spot. Going home, boys. Now they keep showing the Anaheim Ducks, by the way. Shout out Ducks fans. I was a duck. Fucking quack. The, the rink party, when they show, it just looks a little. They gotta fill in the floor.
G
They sold it out both times. I think they're allowed. It's a not. It's. They allow for like 9, 000 fans. And they said that they've sold it out. But yes, it. Does it look like Montreal or like, like the Oilers? No, but it's Anaheim.
Keith
However, however, however many people show up, you just say that that's a sellout. It's like, yeah, 6,000. We could only have six.
Biz Nasty
We only sold 6,000 tickets. Quack.
G
The. The comparison that I saw online was it's basically like they got Sasha Barkov but he's developed earlier. Like, yeah, he's like. Or he, like, he's. He's what, like a year away from being like. Like the high. You know what? One or two years from being a high end. Sasha Barkov.
Keith
Yeah. And that. That's a great point because Barky, his. I mean, maybe his teams weren't as
Biz Nasty
good, but I was with him his rookie year, and I remember just being like, now let's look at his numbers. I remember being like this kid. He was. He was so big, like, thick. I mean, he had 24 points his first year, 36 points his next year, 20. The first year he played 54 games. Wow.
G
Carlson, very similar.
Biz Nasty
Yeah. He popped off his fifth season for 78 points, then 96. Yeah. I mean, I. There might be more offensive talent with Carlson. I know that sounds insane. And. And Keith, you might be someone who says Barky could get 100 points every year, but Carlson is. Is something else. And if I'm Anaheim going home, I'm feeling very good about where I sit.
G
He's very fluid for a big guy. Like, he doesn't look big because of how he moves in that sense. Like, you're like, how does he move so efficiently yet he's so big?
Biz Nasty
There's been three or four plays he's made in this series alone where he's picking. Picking it up in the middle of a pivot. I mean, the one play to the comb is the one everyone's talking about, but. But there's been a couple others where. And then he'll get a quick stick handle through a guy's triangle when it looks like he has no room and no time. So if. If they get game three biz, are you gonna start. Are you gonna start worrying a little bit about your. Your Golden Knights, or are you still.
G
They're not my. They're not my Golden Knights. I just. From. I just. I. I do believe in a veteran group and how they got to Mojo going, but hey, man, credit to Anaheim. It's awesome to see a team take this next step like this. And credit to Verbeek and staff. Like, with the mix of veterans, like, they are way ahead of schedule right now.
Keith
Oh, yeah.
G
Way ahead of schedule. What was the last thing I was going to mention there?
Biz Nasty
I'm happy for VL too, because that fourth line against Edmonton, right. Is so dominant.
G
Oh, yeah.
Biz Nasty
Then he decides to make the change with more and McTavish out. And that is an example of, like, a player like, you want more ice time, like, go out and go out and earn it. And then he's on the third line with Paling and Seneca, and it's like, that's just. I just love seeing that, right? Like, hey, you want more ice time? You can't sit there and say, I want to play more. Like, go out and do it. And he gets moved up a line with the lineup changes, so.
Keith
And. And it's gonna piss off McTavish when he does get back in the lineup. He sees what VL's been doing. Maybe he tries to mimic his game a little bit more. It's. It's good for the whole team.
G
I think I've texted this in the group chat. McTavish is a bit of a wild card if you ISO cam him during games, like, sometimes he'll make a great play, and then other times you're like,
Biz Nasty
whoa, he could play. I hate saying this as a guy wasn't this way, but just like, he could be a little harder, right?
Keith
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Big body. Like, if he was mean as. I don't. Maybe I'm totally missing that.
G
He is thick, kid. If. Man, I feel bad for Hurdle because he's like the nicest guy in the league, but I think that he would be a health bomb on. On my Chickens cup team right now. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I think Terry Ryan's getting in the lineup before him. Yeah, well, three goals since February.
Marley
Before I go, though, I. I gotta give some life to our Vegas guys, Migs and Blutman. Golden Knights are 06 in game two of the second round. They've gone on to win four of the previous five series.
Keith
Okay, Murr.
Biz Nasty
Hey, I wasn't aware of that. That. All right, well, Murr, thank you so much, buddy. Great job on game notes. Congrats. On 100 episodes was the Daggle money.
Keith
Oh, another one.
R.A.
Yep.
Marley
The Daggle's the best. Make sure you go listen to him. He's.
G
Hey, congrats.
Marley
We're gonna keep getting him on.
G
Congrats to game notes. 100 episodes, folks. Go check them out. Check out YouTube.
Biz Nasty
All right, before we bring in juice, let's talk about Athletic Brewing. Athletic Brewing Company crafts great tasting, award winning non alcoholic beer. That means no compromises on flavor, no consequences later for enjoying the celebration. This is a full flavor, non alcoholic beer that never feels out of place. There's always a seat at the bar for you not drinking or cutting down on drinking. Fit for all times. You can drink anytime, anywhere, and still go right back to whatever you were doing. Biz oh, wow. I didn't see you grab that. You're an Athletic Brewing guy. You love those. Bruce, no hangovers. Great nights don't need awful mornings. Athletic Brew has a variety of styles, including IPAs, goldens, extra dark brews, sours, hazies, and more, many of which are only available online and for a limited time. Oh, okay. Is that your number one right there?
G
No, this is a new one they just came out with. It's. It's like a light lime and salt classic light.
Keith
Review it right now.
G
Sure, sure. I've never tried this one. Good call, Yan.
Biz Nasty
So that's one of the sours. That's one of the sours right there.
G
Okay, so I. I like the. The hairy IPAs, as you guys know. This one I had, I just put down there is a golden. I actually crushed all six of the IPA ones. I had three while we were on the stream the other night. That's why.
Biz Nasty
Well, you could find Athletic Brewing's best selling best selling lineup at grocery or liquor stores near you or try a variety of limited styles exclusively on their website. Go to athletic brewing.com/chiclets to find stores near you or get brew shipped right to you. Use code chiclets to get 15 off your first online order near beer. Terms and conditions and certain limitations apply. Athletic Brewing company fit for all times. Let's hear it, Biz.
G
It's awesome. It's not overbearing either. You're not like. Like a sour after. It's very light. Oh, it's nice. Goes down nice and easy. And also, this isn't even cold and it's great. Wow. This is room temp right now.
Biz Nasty
Room temp. All right, well, we also. We got to talk about shell. I'm gonna be honest. I don't usually get excited about loyalty programs. Boys, they promise big rewards, and then it's like you actually have to eat 48 pizzas to get one for free. So when I heard about the Shell Fuel rewards program, I was skeptical. Shocking. I know. Me, I'm not usually skeptical, but I was. But here's the thing. It's actually kind of annoyingly practical. You're already getting gas, you're already grabbing takeout. You're already buying snacks you didn't need but absolutely deserve. And with Shell Fuel rewards, you just get rewarded for all that. That and not in a fake points you'll never use type of way. It's actual savings on gas. And the part that got me, the saving stack. So it's not like one sad little discount. It's you fill up, you eat, you shop, and it all piles up into real savings at the pump. Joining takes less than three minutes in the shell app and you'll save on every fill after that. Literally every single one. Join the Shell Fuel rewards program and save now. Give me juice. Give me some juice. Onto this show.
G
And as we bring on McAfee.
Keith
You mean
G
bring him in. And while he's on, I gotta say, Juice, you would love these because you're in shape. Only 40 calories and $2 million a year get donated back to local trails. So hiking trails like you got. Do you love hiking, Juice? Are you a hiker?
Biz Nasty
This is your dream.
Juice
I almost believe you. Bizarre. I almost believe it.
G
Says it right on the can. Given back up to juice.
Keith
What happened to the teeth?
Juice
Oh, they're right here. I'm just eating some oatmeal. Yeah, yeah, but biz, you're telling me that tastes good, like warm.
G
It's room temperature. It's great.
Juice
I like, I do like hiking. I think everyone likes hiking, don't they?
G
Giving up to 2 million per year annually. I didn't make it. Yeah, it's on the can, buddy. You think I'm diabetic?
Juice
That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. I'm happy for you.
G
Thanks, buddy.
Biz Nasty
So you are.
G
You don't, you don't sound genuine.
R.A.
Right.
Biz Nasty
Excuse. When you get to Toronto at the start of the playoffs, you're just there till cup finals. That when you're traveling from arena to arena for the, for the games.
Juice
Yeah, yeah. The finals were on site. I'll go home for. I got like a five day window where I got to go home and do some family stuff. But I check into the hotel for 51 days. I go buy myself a candle at shoppers drug market.
G
Oh, nice.
Juice
Probably illegal in a hotel. I set the mood in my room. I unpack, I go get some, some waters and some Gatorades and I set up shop. And I'm basically every day.
G
You know what's nice though is those W's is usually there's like a nice little living room area. Like you got room where you can like stretch out. And it's not like you're not. You don't feel like you're in a crammed hotel room.
R.A.
Yeah.
Juice
So you got the bed and the golf clubs and then you got your. Yeah.
G
Biz. You've stayed here before.
Juice
That's a good setup. It's a really good setup.
G
It's unbelievable.
Juice
The gym's good. And in the gym Now, I don't know, last time you stayed here, biz, they added a whole bunch of equipment and they had. So now they have all these personal trainers in there. So every day I go in, there's like four or five of these dudes that are personal trainers and they have clients. And these guys love hockey. So every day I walk in, it's just non stop hockey talk. And then with the draft lottery, I'm scared to go in there today. I think it's going to be a 45 minute conversation about who the Leafs
Keith
are picking the heavy bags in there.
Juice
No, no heavy bags. Yeah. You stayed here too? Yeah. No, they got rid of the heavy bags and they added like three racks. So you have actual like weight now. There's people. There's a guy, like a six year old guy, trap bar deadlifting the other day and it's kind of wild. It's fun.
Keith
Fun to see David Amber.
G
What? He's a unit. He could pro. He could probably play starting safety in the CFL
Juice
too. Nice.
G
What do you make of. Of everything that went down over the last 48 hours or. Or three days? It's been a bit of a circus there.
Juice
Yeah. Like the draft lottery. Well, first of all, I don't really understand your reaction. I thought you were so pro leaves Ambassador and then you jump ship. You didn't want to win the first over. Why?
G
Just because. Because the. The gm.
Keith
Really?
G
We had him in Arizona.
Juice
Oh, you're not a fan.
G
Well, I just. I don't want to get into it now. It was tough sledding. I don't. I don't like the way that Doan was treated when he. When he was in charge.
Juice
Okay, you want to go back to you interviewing me then instead of me interviewing you?
G
Well, I mean, I could talk. I could call you after and explain why and go in or go into big time. Yeah, to a certain degree. Is there anybody, if there's. Is there anybody that you played with where. If they were kind of shunned. What if. What if they were shunned from the organization that you were involved in that you would be loyal to them? You'd say I'm good. I don't. I don't want to.
Biz Nasty
For example.
Juice
Yeah, but. No, I understand what you guys were saying for sure. Your loyalties are to your friends and your teammates. I get that. I just was kind of stirring the pot.
G
Oh, I know, but you do that. I was just. I was questioning your loyalty. Who are you loyal to? Like who are your ride or dies?
Biz Nasty
Elliot.
Juice
Elliot, for sure. Elliot, Amber. Yeah, like Ron teammates. Right. And when I played too, it was the same thing. Oh, I was just watching 4 seconds left in the Anaheim Vegas game. I didn't see Ross Johnson and Kolasar having a little convo, like maybe they were gonna go.
G
Nothing happened there.
Juice
But back to the hockey stuff like the draft lottery. I actually quickly talked to the, the cities after it because obviously Vancouver, they thought they were going to get the first pick and that that didn't happen. I said it's kind of a blessing in disguise in my opinion, because this draft is not like a celebrini where celebrities clear cut number one. And it's a big drop off, you know, the Russian below him and then some other guys and then even the Bedard. Although I heard you talking about Leo Carlson. Arguably he could be better than Bedard, but going into that draft it was clear cut Bedard number one. There's no clear cut guy this year and it really is based on, on your needs. So I think you almost dodge a bullet where you don't get the pressure and the scrutiny of picking first overall and making sure you pick the right guy. That's a slam dunk. And at number three, you could possibly get the guy that you wanted at number one anyways, depending on what the Leafs do. Like you would just think the safe pick is McKenna, right? If you don't want any backlash, you got a winger who can play with Matthews. That's the safe pick. And then when you go to San Jose, if they don't trade down or anything like that, like they need a defense back. Like they have great forwards, great young forwards and we got Sam Dickinson. But after that they need some young defense and they need a right hand shot. Well, there's two great right hand shot defensemen in the top five. So if you're Vancouver, you're probably going to get your, your Stenberg or your Caleb Mahaltra or your Chase Reed, like whoever they value number one. So it's kind of like it was a blessing in disguise. And then. But for the Leafs, the Leafs needed that for their organization. I know you don't want to hear it.
Keith
It.
G
No, I'm, I'm fine with that.
Juice
But they need something good to happen, right? And Matt's coming in. I play with Matt's. So you say who am I loyal to? Like I'm a big Matt Sundeen fan. He was unbelievable to me. He came in and we all knew he was going to be in the hall of Fame. He played half a season with us he got absolutely piled drive by the media and the coaching staff when we were there. Like, he came in at Christmas and he was behind. You know, he wasn't really playing, and he was training a little bit back in Sweden, and he worked his butt off. He was doing, like, lunges before practice. He would work his butt off. And then at the end of his game, like, some of the first games that he played, he'd take, like, kind of a bad penalty at the end, like a stick penalty. And the next day, in video, Vino would show it on video and be like, brutal penalty, son. And you call him son. Brutal penalty, son. And we're all looking around like, not that anybody should be exempt from that treatment, but there's some guys that are kind of above being embarrassed in a meeting.
Biz Nasty
Paul's son.
Keith
Oh, yeah, that was everybody's son.
Juice
Yeah, we thought that Matt was. I thought match was above that. So what do you think his reaction would be, guys? Like, what would your reaction be? If you were a Hall of Famer and somebody was talking down to you, you. You would probably feel confident enough to fire back. This guy just took it. Best teammate ever. Never complained. So I got a lot of time for Mats.
G
I love that. The. When you guys went back to Toronto and didn't you get the Shootout winner?
Juice
Yeah, we were talking about that yesterday. They came by to say hi and the studio, and I said, hey, dude. Because we're talking about, like, the. The memories you miss with the boys when you're done playing. And I go, remember that the night after Mats, because he took us all out to music, and we walked into the bar afterwards, full sushi spread and everything. Matt's took care of the whole night. So on the ice and off the ice, that was a super memorable night. It was so cool to see him honored there. And, you know, you could tell he was emotional and everything. And, like, I grew up in Toronto like you, and I grew up watching him and the Leafs, so it's pretty cool for me to see that moment.
G
That's awesome.
Biz Nasty
Wow.
Juice
So cheer for him, Biz. Cheer for mine.
G
I am. I am. Hey, it's more about, like, some of the Leafs fans coming at me for not, like, knowing why the I did it. And like I said, I'm just. I'm loyal to my guys, and that's it. I. I've.
Biz Nasty
I've.
G
I've put the line in the sand, my friend. That's good.
Biz Nasty
If we're speaking about future hall of famers, what Nathan McKinnon is doing right now in the playoffs, Colorado looks heads and shoulders better than Minnesota. They have 14 goals in two games. McKinnon has three points in his last three games. Each game he's got three points. Not only that, he runs over Baldy, he runs over Quinn Hughes. He's just completely dominant. And Juice, I'll go to you, is there any chance Minnie can get back in this series? And we've said before with no Erickson and Ek and Brodine, that's, that's what makes this look almost impossible right now.
Juice
What's G saying right now in the chat group?
G
No, he, no, he dropped Baldy and
Biz Nasty
oh yeah, he said he joins him exclusive company with his third straight three point playoff game. The only players to accomplish that over the past few last 40 years, Leon Dreisaitel in 2022, Miko Rontin in last year, Pavelski in 2010, Joe Sakic in 97 and Dennis Maruk in 1986.
G
And then he also reminded us that he, he went after Baldi and Quinn Hughes. It looked like the dog was out to prove a point.
Juice
Yeah, get jump in there, G. If you got something good like that next, some good stuff.
G
He's the producer. Well, he hops in sometimes that you got you on. We can't have 10 guys on the mics.
Keith
That's why he wrote it, so he can read it.
Juice
I know, I know. I just calling him out.
Biz Nasty
He's giving me a chance to read off a 6 stat that he found.
Juice
No, yeah, that was great. No, McKinnon's been awesome. He's been. The thing about him is, you know, like he's obviously, he's fast and he's super skilled, but he's a big dude. Like people forget that when, but when he was 19 years old, he played his first, first full NHL season. They lost, I believe in the first round of the playoffs. Then he came over to the world championships and he met us there. He was kind of the last guy to show up because he played, you know, some guys play one round and come over. The rest of us missed the playoffs. So he came over kind of like late and he wanted to play. And he's 19 years old and we knew how fast and how good he was. And he comes up to me in practice the one day day and he goes, hey, can you teach me how to fight? And I go, what? And he goes, yeah, yeah. So like I'm like, okay. So we dropped the gloves and it's, it was nice because there's no cameras or no nothing there and, and he's 19 and I'm just kind of like, first thing you teach a guy is how to protect himself. And I just kind of grab him by the shoulders. He grabs me and like, I thought I was pretty strong. And he's just a 19 year old kid and he just starts whipping me around a little bit and I'm like, okay, like this guy's gonna be fine. Right? He's just another thing to add to his repertoire. And I think McDavid is really strong on his feet. McKinnon's a different level of strength and power though, so he's a really hard guy to shut down. You can't bully him, you know, like Boldy, I think, is a big, strong dude on his feet and that was a huge, huge hit. So when he's determined, I think Nate dog, there's very few people that can slow him down. It's when he gets kind of, you know, a little frustrated and maybe poopy pants sometimes. That's when you got him. But he's not like that right now, so that's scary.
G
Yeah, he's. He's more inclined to throw a reverse hit than McDavid would be and to initiate contact is the way that I would put it.
Juice
Yeah, that's a good way.
Keith
Another guy on that team that I think's been unreal is Marty Naches. Like just his speed. He almost looks like McKinnon out there sometimes, the way him and they get up and down the ice. I think looking back like now making that trade for renting and bringing in nature, like there's no way they're regretting.
Juice
Nature's is so sexy, the way he skates because he's a. He's probably like 6, 3. And when he starts crossing over, he's got like that little hop to his step and the jersey starts fluttering and he just has really good style. Like my son. You guys have met my son. He's always been a Carolina Hurricanes fan. So nature's has always been one of his favorites with all. Yeah, he's like, why he said that he watched Ajo and Tara Vinen and World Junior and that's when he first started to like him. So he's been a day one since I played, like I was still in the league and he was cheering for Carolina while I was still playing.
Keith
He's like, dad, will you get me a Martinuk stick?
R.A.
Exactly.
Juice
Well, he's got, he's got one. It's funny like the first All Star game I worked. I brought him with me and aho, was there and they were doing the media scrum before. And he's. My son's a really shy kid, especially when he was younger and he was probably only like 12. And I go over and I introduce him to Ajo and Aho was probably like 19, 19, 20, and he's a shy kid too. And they both just basically stared at each other and nobody talked. And I'm like, I'm like, cole, tell him what you said. Sebastian, tell it.
G
Like, yeah, yeah, like mediating a conversation
Juice
between two, like mute kids.
G
What do you make of. Of what Stank Hoven hall and Jackson Blake are doing? And more like, more importantly, like, Stank. Like, I was kind of surprised that they, they like, like they were okay going in with him as a second line center. It's not like he was a world burner as far as offensive output this season too. I think he finished the regular season like 40, 45 points. Like, did you think that was a risk going in? Are you shocked what he's showing us so far in the first six games of playoffs?
Juice
I feel like a really bad analyst because I told everyone before that I talked to about Carolina. I just don't trust a team that has their top five offensive guys under 5 foot 10.
G
Right.
Juice
I just, I just don't get it. Jarvis, Ajo, Stankhoven, Jackson, Blake and Ehlers. And they're making me look pretty, pretty silly. But all of us, all of us. But I knew, I knew like from watching him at world juniors, I knew Stankhoven was like a little bit of a pit bull and. But I mean, he, like, what a player. He every shift he throws a hit, he steals the puck, he makes a sick play, he skates it. He's kind of fearless out there. And I think the one good thing about Carolina is we all know how they're such a great team, right? Like there's. You can't really fool us. I think we know they're a great team. And that line has kind of taken over the Ajo Svetchnikov Jarvis line in the playoffs. And they're playing better, they're producing more and you're seeing the transition where they're starting more power plays, they're starting more games and they're kind of getting played more like a first line. And I don't see any pout from the Jarvis line. Like they're. Jarvis is just going out and getting run over and taking hits to make plays and blocking shots and doing whatever he can to win. So that's a sign of a Good playoff team. When one line's going, you ride the hot hand, and there's no hard feelings from everybody else below them or above them.
G
Sorry.
Biz Nasty
No, go ahead.
Keith
I was just gonna say Sandheim and Rista Linen have been on them most the games that I've seen. And you'll see tonight at home who. Who will be their number one line. Because if Sanheim and Risto are on that the Stankhoven line, then that's their number one line that they're afraid. Creative.
Juice
So, yeah, interesting question. You and wit defensemen. Three defensemen. Who was your toughest, like, matchups? Like, I hated playing the little guys. The little fast guys that you go near them and they tight turn away from you. Like, I loved. Like, I didn't love it. But I didn't mind playing Joel Thornton and Ryan Clow and Marlo. Like, I didn't mind that line more so than, like, a line with all these little speedsters. Like, those guys are not easy to
G
play against, especially when there's two of them on one line.
Juice
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
And their compete levels are really high, so their motors are what makes them so successful. So you're in the corner, you think you might have them pinned. They're spinning off you. Now, I saw a cool. Well, first I want to shout out Brindamore because the Svetchnikov aho Jarvis line had been a little slow. Then he put Jarvis with Stall and Ehlers, and then that produced the goal that tied it up in game two, Right?
G
Jarvis's buddies did.
Biz Nasty
Yeah. True, true. And I think they're multiplying. I think there's like 12 of them now. I thought it was six before, but Brenda Moore's like, all right, let's switch it up. And then if you look at that now, I don't know if Martin Nuke can get Ajo and Svetchnikov going, but obviously, Ehlers Jarvis install. That's an awesome line. Then I saw a video of Stankhoven where they're interviewing his dad, who was down at the. Down at the game, you know, the pregame tailgates. He's got a beer in hand, and he's.
Keith
He's.
Biz Nasty
He's just talking about how at Olympic break, Stankhoven went home, and he's like, I don't even know if I'm gonna get 30 points, dad. Like, I think he had 18, 19 points. And he's just talking to him, like, try to take some pressure off yourself, you know, like. And Stankhoven says how much his dad's meant to him. He coached him, you know, his entire life growing up and he's taken off since then. So sometimes it shows. Like you go back, you have a chat with your father who's been your coach your whole life and you kind of simplify things. But that kid, he's the first ever, the youngest player in NHL history to begin the playoffs on a five game goal streak. So it's like I didn't, I didn't know that. You kind of forget how young he is too. But I do think that Philly like with, with their game in game two, they, they, they're in one now because yeah, I don't think about, I more think about winning the series. Like how do you beat this team 4 out of 5? That's my thing with Minnesota and Colorado. Like, you know, you're, I don't know if you're going to see a team beat these guys four out of five. But Philly at least with that effort going home has a chance here. They do need to have like Porter Martone boys like he, he slowed down a little bit. I totally get it. You come from college run and all of a sudden you get a little tired. And the tippet injury, the tippet injury. I also had no idea for speed bursts of 22 miles an hour or more, he was second in the league behind McDavid.
Juice
Oh yeah, that'll isn't Noah Cates out now for the series lower body.
Biz Nasty
Yep.
Juice
So like you're right, the injuries are piling on. I, I think to beat Carolina because they play that man on man and they're, they're all over you in the, in the neutral like everywhere you get the pocket boom guys right on you. Because he's just like ISO camming you and he, and he has you. So you have to be a good one on one player. And Zegrus is a really good passer. He's a really good kind of like, you know, off the rush, three on twos. Like he's creative that way, but he's not necessarily a guy who can spin off Slavin and beat him, take it to the net. You know what I mean? Like Martone is one of the guys I think can do that. I think he can beat a guy down low and take it to the net. Those are the type of players I think that create offense, you know, historically against Carolina. But I don't know, I think that Philly, they had a great start to game two, but I really thought they needed to win that game just, just for their confidence to think they could be in this series. So they got a tall task, man. Like, it might be. I hate to say it, I hate to do it, to talk, but, like, it might be a sweep. Like, this could be a sweep series. And then Carolina's sitting around just licking their chops, waiting for Montreal and Buffalo to beat each other up.
G
Have you ever been on a team where, like, basically since like, All Star break, you have to go on a crazy run to even get in? And if so, like, how much energy does that take away from you? Because I feel like they've been playing playoff hockey now for like two months already. Right. It's not like they got a little bit of rest going in the playoffs. It's like every game was a must win situation for them to even get in. I think it was 3.8% was the chance they had after Olympic break. So, Juice, have you ever, like, had to do that and, like, do you hit that wall?
Juice
Yeah, I have. I've been so. 2010, 11, we won the President's Trophy in Vancouver. We ended up making a whole run to the finals, game seven, all that stuff. The next season was about a month left. We were. It was so tight. There was so much parody in the west that we were. Were kind of on the verge of not making the playoffs, but our division was all still really close, so we had to grind to make the playoffs. And we ended up winning the President's Trophy again. And everyone said we were the worst team to ever win the President's Trophy. Like, that's. Well, I don't know. Like. Well, yeah, here's. Here's the evidence. So then we were the number one seed, playing the Kings in the first round and. And they beat us pretty, pretty easily. So we were just like, not a little bit from the year before, but just playing all these meaningful games and not so much physically because you can recover. It's like the mental, like, where every mistake is such a big deal. Like when you play 20 games of that, then you start the playoffs. Like, as soon as the playoffs start, you're almost like, oh, I can exhale now. You know, like, every mistake is not like, we have four wins to play with here or four losses. I should say to play with here. Like, I don't have to be that mentally on. And then next thing you know, you're down 2, 3, 1 in the series. That's a real thing.
G
And your fan base is, like, kind of just happy you made playoffs. Like, it's just like you're playing with houses, money. Everybody's In a good mood and you've broken a what, five, six year streak of not making the dance.
Biz Nasty
So interesting mentioned biz on the stream. I think about Carolina and the way they play and how much energy it takes if they can get a sweep or info. Oh yeah, makes such a difference to them because like they're the man on man thing. Like it is definitely harder in your own zone. Are they in their own zone that much? Not really. The Slaven slaving continues. Like you watch games, man, and it. That guy is so fast and he makes. He'll make a stick check in his own zone and all of a sudden he skates it to the red line and he'll, you know, he'll dump it in change or make a pass and it's just like this guy is so much better than I think people give him credit for. And even in the past few years people have really started un understanding. But if you're a Flyers fan who doesn't see Carolina a lot, you're like this guy's. He's a impossible to get around the wet.
Juice
There's a. Where there's a. There's an analytics statistic to support what you're saying. It's called like disruption stats. And Carolina and Slavin are off the charts. Like disruption and. And 50, 50 battles won and like killing plays. They're so good at that. And so they're man on man in Montreal is also kind of a man on man. Tons of energy. So what are both those teams have in common? They play everybody. Everybody plays on their team. Like pretty even across the board. Like you're talking about Carolina and Montreal. Like Montreal's D is a little bit skewed, that third pairings a little bit below. But in Carolina everybody plays like they roll the line. You have to.
G
That's what I was just going to bring up. So the, the least amount of ice as far as forwards in. In. In game two was Jankowski and he played 13 minutes. Wow, you look that. Yeah, dude, that I was just. That's really literally why I brought this up because you talk about how they do get tired or they could get tired because of how hard they play. They do such a good job of having no passengers and just. And distributing ice that not only are they going to get their rest, but they keep everybody fresh because they roll four lines and that's how they're able to keep that pace up throughout the course of a game. Now I also thought that this was crazy. Who do you think led their team in ice Time on D last game.
Juice
Biz, you need a defibrillator if you played 13 minutes, buddy.
G
I played 11 against the Edmonton Oilers. I had to take the next practice off. Ask Gans. I was in a body cast in the room the next day.
Juice
Yeah, played 11 minutes in the first period.
Keith
He was literally the next day, he's like, that's right. Do this. Getting ivs. Had the Norma Tech boots.
Biz Nasty
You took your option, right? Took it up.
G
First time ever.
Biz Nasty
First time. Was it Keandre Miller?
G
No, but he was second.
Juice
Walker. Sean Walker?
G
No, it was Chatfield. Played 29, seven times. Oh, I was asking those. I was asking Juice, but. Sorry.
Keith
Do you think it's because their first line isn't going that well, that they just spread the love throughout? Like, if they were humming and going out at a good clip, getting chances all the time, that they'd be getting a little bit more ice time, but now that they're not, they just kind of spread it throughout everyone.
Juice
I think as a coach, I think if they were to your point, if they were going, like, really going, you'd start with them. You go line one, line two, line three, line four. And then the next time you go line one, line two, lay three back to one. So you'd maybe get them every three lines once in a while, and maybe you'd slow down with the fourth. But if they're not going to, and your fourth line's going, then I think you just. You just continue to roll them. And then, you know, obviously, special teams resets everything. So who's. Penalty killing, whose power play, that. That resets things. But this playoffs, what a lot of teams are doing, like, Anaheim did this the whole first round, as soon as they. And who did it last night? Montreal's been doing it as well. After every power play, they come out with the full fourth line. Because you know how, like, on a power play, you have two units. So essentially you have eight forwards that are on the two. Two units with two D. So that's like. Like one guy from one line. One guy. So the fourth line. Usually nobody plays on the power play, so a lot of these teams, because they trust their fourth line so much, they're coming out of a power play with a full fourth line, and all those guys are fresh, and now it kind of resets everyone and they can get their lines back together quickly. Like, I don't remember teams doing that when I. When we were playing. Well, I guess when I was playing. I'm a little bit older than you, but that's Kind of a cool thing. But you got to trust your fourth line to do that.
Keith
And if you don't score you can go out and get an energy shift kind of get the light back into your group.
G
So and to answer your question, each of their like Carrier, Jankowski and Robinson, they, they average 11 minutes of ice during the regular season. So they're rolling like they were.
Biz Nasty
There's not a lot to be the most in the league for fourth line.
G
I would say that they're up there now. I don't know that that's regular season. I'd be curious if that aligns with the way that playoffs have gone.
Juice
There's no way Kerry is a fourth liner the whole, the whole year though. He must go up to the third at times. I've seen him because he's kind of one of those guys where he can move up and down.
G
Jankowski's averaging 12 so far this playoffs of ice time. Robinson's kind of for sure fourth liner.
Biz Nasty
Would you say it's a lot of chances man?
G
Oh he's, he's fast as too. He, he's averaging 10 minutes these playoffs.
Keith
That's probably exactly why like you go to Carolina you're not going to have hundreds point seasons. If you're a guy like you, you gotta, you gotta be bought in to play there to be like hey listen like you it a really good season is 80 points if you're a high end like aho. But like they really get their guys to buy in and to not about it like you said only playing 15 minutes instead of the big dogs on other teams when they're playing 21.
Juice
Yeah but how good is that for team culture when after the game everyone's, you know what it's like when the top guys play 23 and then there's a guy that played six or seven and they grab the event summary after and they're kind of just like bitching under the belt. Oh I barely played tonight like and you. And they like I don't care like I didn't, I didn't have any get on the bike. Yeah. And you're just miserable. Like it's so good when everybody feels like they have like an impact in the outcome of the game.
Biz Nasty
I think that's one thing not to make it about Edmonton where fans are like I there kind of has to be more evened out ice time. Yeah, Carolina's like proof of, of what that can do. But going back to this, I want to ask you this Juice. Minnesota kind of started with that as A defenseman, Alexander Daigle. The Daigle was on with game notes yesterday, and he said to those guys that Quinn Hughes is playing too much. I. I see what he's saying. I also see that that's just what he's so used to. But at this point, like, with how physical Colorado's been, do you think you try to lower his minutes or you really can't? With Brodino?
Juice
That's who that was. Eh? I saw the. The clip online. I didn't know who it was. Yeah, I don't know that. That's tricky. It's the same conversation with McDavid and dry settle like, they play too much, but, like, I'd rather take McDavid and dry saw at 50 than anyone on the bottom six. So I don't know. Like, Quinn Hughes. Like, I. I watch Quinn Hughes as he gets tired at the end of a shift.
Keith
Shift.
Juice
Yeah. Like, sometimes he'll. He doesn't have the juice to get it get away from a guy because he's so good at escaping four checkers. And when a guy comes to him and he doesn't have a passing lane, he can tweak, turn, quick, turn, quick, turn. See you later, bud. And he loses that ability as the shifts go on. But I don't know. I've watched this series, and I don't think. I don't think that hurt him. And I watched him a lot in the Olympics because I thought, what's the difference with this US Team from four nations of the Olympics?
Biz Nasty
It is.
Juice
It was only Quinn Hughes, and everybody thought that the US Team had the best decor at four nations and the best E core at the Olympics. So now all of a sudden, you insert this guy to the best decor, but he plays monster minutes. Like, how is that going to affect all the other guys around him when he's out there so much? And I didn't really think his extra shifts and his long shifts hurt him. He always has, like, a little bit of gas left in. In the tank. So I don't know, like, you're down to nothing right now going home. Like, you. You play that guy as much as he wants to play. But as a coach, I always, like, watch guys when they come off, they're breathing in the recovery. If he just had a hard shift where he's gas and he's skating around, he's got the puck and he takes a couple big hits, that's the time you give him a break. So, like, you're. You're almost watching his body and his recovery throughout the game rather than the line matchups or who's up next. And you just get him out and put him in a good situation. You think he's gassed, give him an extra shift. Even if he's like, I'm good, I'm good. I'd be like, no, bro, I can see your chest beating a thousand miles an hour. You just took a huge hit by, you know, somebody. Remember, he's lying underneath the pile for five minutes. Like, no, you're gonna. You're gonna sit once you get recovered.
Keith
I. I wish we had a high end forward on here. No offense, biz, but like to ask him this question because. No, because I remember having a conversation with Dan Cleary and we were talking about Lidstrom and he would just say like, he was like, Nick would have the puck on his stick for half a second and just pass it right up to the forwards. Get it in the hands of the fans. Like always talk about that. And I'd love to like find out from a guy like Kirill or like, does he hold on to the puck too long sometimes? You know, I love watching him and I love the fact that he holds on to the puck and, and makes his plays. But I wonder if the forwards, if it kind of gets them out of sync.
Juice
Yeah, you got to pick your spot. You got to pick your spots when you're playing those minutes. Like, not every shift can be super event handful. I don't know, like breaking. Breaking. Let's see, guys.
R.A.
We do have some breaking news.
Juice
Oh, there he is.
R.A.
It told me to there, but Quinn Hughes has not been named to the Norris finalists. It's Rasmus, Dalin Kale Makar, and Zach Warinski.
Keith
Wow.
G
Shard either. This is gonna all Warinski's year, boys.
Juice
No chance. No chance.
G
You think Bakar gets it again?
Juice
I think McCarr is the best defenseman, but I think Dalleen's gonna win it.
R.A.
What?
Juice
No, I do. I think Darlene's gonna win it. He's. He's like, it's his year for sure. Like, he penalty kills, he plays hard, he's got tons of block shots. He. He's kind of a complete, complete defenseman. Like, look at the. The jump that their team made. Like the fact that Rinsky's team didn't make the playoffs. That will hurt him and the voters opinions. I think I 100 the fact that
G
Darlene did all that while his. His fiance, I think he's engaged now, was going through everything that she was going through. Hand it to him. Oh, unreal.
Juice
But I don't think, in my opinion, and we're splitting hairs here, because easily Quinn Hughes could be in there. Bu Shard. Lane Hudson, you could throw so many different guys in there. Makavoy still Jake Sanderson, like, what a year for defenseman. But I still think McCarr is the best defenseman. He starts power play and penalty kill. Not only on the Colorado Avalanche, the best team in. In the NHL, but Team Canada, the best country in the world. And he's the clear.
G
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Juice. Thank you.
Juice
They are, though, like, you guys.
G
They dominated that game.
Biz Nasty
I don't know. Women, Paralympics. I don't know about that.
Juice
Paralympics. That's what you're saying, buddy.
Biz Nasty
We three for three. Would I say that to your face? Maybe not. But three for three,
G
they touched the puck as much as I did if I was playing. I know domination.
Juice
But, yeah, whatever you guys are, you guys won. But you didn't. You're not the better team just because the. The better team doesn't always win. Put it out.
Keith
Okay.
Biz Nasty
Okay. Rod and Coop,
G
I love it. I need. I needed another Canadian on here. I'm getting dummied.
Biz Nasty
Every goddamn well you had Pasha, but then he completely just like, oh, he's
G
more American than you guys. I gotta ask Juice one thing about the Canucks. I think it's been eight or 16 drafts in a row where they haven't bumped up in draft position. And I know you're loyal to the Canucks. Like, they've. They've got the worst fucking luck in the world, man. They have never gone up in draft position. They've never had. I think. Well, they had the second, third overall pick, but in the last. Like I said, Last 16 years, like,
Biz Nasty
well, they had to trade for the other. Well, they had second. I think they had to trade Berkey at the. Trade for the third.
G
Yeah. Like, how do we change the lockup for the Canucks?
Juice
Kevin, do you want me to connect you to Ron Delorme? Ron Delorum, line one. Here's Biz. Yeah, I mean, scouting's tough, and you need some breaks, for sure, and. But I just think, like, you have to. You have to pick your guys. You have to make sure you identify who you. Who you get, and then you have to develop them. I think you have to be committed to developing them. And I think in a Canadian market, that's hard sometimes because there's so much. Much pressure to win. Now, even when you're rebuilding and even when you're retooling on the fly, there's still some pressure to be competitive every night, you know, your power play goes over four, you're getting booed off the ice at home. So it's so hard to be patient and develop your draft picks in a Canadian market. So at some point, yeah, somebody has to make a stand and there has to be alignment that this is what we're going to do. We're going to draft well and we're going to develop all of our draft picks. And so basically, all I can say
Biz Nasty
there biz, there's such a panic now. I feel as a gm, like you gotta know your scouts are good at what they do because look at the UFAs. Every year, every year there's less and less. And if you don't draft well now you have zero chance. That's, that's, that's everything. Back quickly to this series. Little Vancouver talk there.
G
Sorry.
Biz Nasty
So even strength. They're actually pretty even. What are we talking about with special teams here in Minnesota? Biz, you pointed it out to us.
G
Yeah, Their penalty, they can't kill PK
Biz Nasty
or have a PP.
G
The fact that their PP was running at, I think it was at 8% last I checked, might be even a little bit lower now after that game the other night. But their penalty kill was atrocious against Dallas. Yeah, Dallas has one of the best power plays in the league. But Juice, like, I was getting texts from Jared Stoll and he's like, man, like, they can't take away the simple low play. Like, just, it's all about stick positioning. Like, what the are they doing? So it maybe goes back to certain guys maybe playing too much ice and maybe not knowing how to play certain specialty areas. Well, what do you make of how dog their. Their special teams are?
Juice
Well, last game, Ryan Strom's been in for a couple days doing some analyst work.
G
Yeah, he's been awesome, right?
Juice
Really good. And so he was kind of pointing out the last mini game, like the down low plays. And he's like, okay, this is a set play off the, the face off when you get possession. They're running through this play first. It's the most obvious play that everybody's seen. Every penalty kill is seen.
G
You pre.
Juice
You pre scout this team before the playoffs. You should know. Okay, McKinnon gets the puck. He goes. Or sorry, Natures gets the puck. He goes. Download him again on the goal line. He's trying to hit Langoscog, but bumper or back door? Like, how do you not know what your responsibility is if that gets there? So for Me, it's a little bit of coaching. So the first one goes down to McKinnon, Middleton goes and slides across and the other guy is late. Like, they're almost like the other defense. Like, should I take the bumper or should I take the net front guy? Like, how do you not know what that read is? That read should be set in stone before the series even starts. So it's a little bit of execution for, for me for Minnesota, but a big part of it also is Ericson at neck. You know, when you have a guy who's so friggin good and starts every penalty kill and double shifts, it's a big hole, man. That's a really big hole for a team to fill.
G
What does Brodine play as far as penalty kill during the regular season?
Juice
Yeah, another guy, he's a PK there.
Keith
He's a big 59 in the playoffs and the power is 13. Like it's, it's got to be better if you want to.
Juice
And I would say, I would argue that a defenseman is more important on the penalty kill than a forward. Like the way that defenseman plays that down low. Like when nature has the puck and he moves up high, that defenseman. I hate when I see a defenseman when he, you know how he like Yan's like, you kind of say like the dot is my reference. Like you'll extend to the dot but not beyond. But I hate when I see a defenseman go to the dot and then a stick is going middle goal line, middle goal line. You have one responsibility there, not two. So whatever your team system is, you should know and have that your stick in that lane. Most of the time your stick should be on the go towards the goal line guy and making sure if that puck gets to him, you push him deeper into the corner so he's not closer to your net to make a two on one at the net. And I hate when I see defenseman like, oh, my sticks here, my sticks there. Why are you doing that?
Keith
It should be a windshield wiper.
Juice
Yeah, there's a windshield wiper. Tells me you don't know what your responsibility is. And that's like a team coaching, a team system thing. That's Minnesota right now.
Keith
Yeah, no, it's tough to watch.
Biz Nasty
I'm, I'm even rewatching the McKinnon goal. Like he kind of sliding through the middle and then it's a total miscommunication of the forward dropping down. So you're right, Juice. It is kind of execution and figuring out, all right, like we have to simplify things at this point because we're running around, we can't stop a power play. We're losing all momentum. If we have any, when we get penalties. I've heard some people say Erickson EK may play game three. And then somebody's saying they heard he got surgery. So obviously playoff time, you have no idea what's going on. But without him, they're. They're in.
G
Was it Gary Lawless?
Biz Nasty
Gary Lawless. Hey, Juice. Gary came on our show.
Juice
Gary's on day.
Biz Nasty
He's the best. And he comes on, he's like, I don't even know if Carlson's gonna be able to play in this series. Talking about Wild Bill. And then he tweeted out a minute after he got off the show that he was playing game one.
Keith
The guy's unbelievable.
Juice
Did you hear the Carlson story in Anaheim? You know, I used to do the team party before the earth. The owners at the Samueli's house. The year before I came, I think was Carlson's or a couple years before. And they make all the rookies go up to the front, in front of the owners and all the players and the GMs and the coaches and just say like your name and introduce yourself. And he goes. And he never talked, right? He was so quiet, so mute. And he goes up, I think he had a couple pops in them before. And he stands up at the front and you go, it's like on the cliff of the ocean, it's beautiful house. And he goes, my name is William, but everyone calls me Wild Bill. And I like to party. I just start dying laughing. Like what? Like, he's a bit of a beauty error.
G
So he. You play with him for a hot minute?
Juice
No, I didn't play with him. This is. I came there like the year after and Cogliano and Silverberg and those guys were telling me about this guy because I'm like, what's this guy's deal? Like, oh, he's a closet beauty.
Biz Nasty
Owner Samuel. He was rocking the jersey in Vegas.
R.A.
Yeah.
G
No number, right?
Biz Nasty
Yeah. Was it no number.
G
It was a blank.
Biz Nasty
Maybe if you're a billionaire, you're like, I'm definitely not putting another man's name,
G
put my net worth number on there. I'll fold this
Keith
well.
G
I'll have you wearing Mickey costumes next week.
Biz Nasty
The other awards that that were, the finalists were announced. Rookie of the Year, I think, no surprise to anyone. Seneca Demidov and the winner, which might be. I mean, what. What will be the percentage of first place votes? Matthew Schaefer. That thing is gonna be a landslide. And Seneca's awesome. Demidov was great. Demidov's got to get going a little bit here against Buffalo. But no, no surprises there for you guys.
G
If you don't vote for Schaefer number one, like you should have your, your, your vote revoked.
Juice
Right. I hate when guys have the really dumb vote where one guy gets one vote out of every all 30 guys like it. One person gets the, the fifth. The fifth vote. Like, yeah, like Schaefer is the obvious pick, but any other year if he's not in it, those two guys have definitely have a chance.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, that's a race between those Schaefer.
Juice
Schaefer got Braden Shen to lift his no move clause where he didn't even want to leave because of an 18 year old kid because he's just lighting up the league and he's walking the line like he's Kale Makar as an 18 year old. Like that kid deserves. The guy deserves a share of Hrr just for himself.
G
I thought that it was Patty Wa who helped him remove that and then they axed him like four days later.
Juice
Yeah, but yeah, I know.
G
Isn't that you sent him over to do.
Juice
Thanks for the help. Thanks for the help.
G
See, thanks for poaching another good player. For us. The new wave is no move. Here's the door.
Biz Nasty
The other news was I, I should have said this when you brought up Van. Jim Rutherford will step down as a president of hockey operations for Vancouver. I guess he'll stay on in an advisory role. I mean, obviously Canucks fans, the way things have gone, they're not, they're not thrilled right now. But this guy's career and what he did in Carolina and then what he did in Pittsburgh, I always think of him as he was early on making trades. When he wanted to make a trade, he wouldn't wait till the deadline. He was always earlier. And then he gave guys more time to be a part of the team. And I mean, I don't know if you know him at all, Juice.
Juice
Yeah, I do. I've talked to Jim before. Three, three Stanley Cups. You look at the teams that he assembled and both those teams that you, both those cities that you just mentioned, fast, skilled, right? Like fans like to watch fast, fast skill teams. So I'm glad that he's staying on in some sort of role because I think it's always great, great to have guys with winning resumes to bounce things off of and just kind of oversee everything.
G
Yeah, love that.
Biz Nasty
I Mean, I'm looking at the Carolina team that he was behind that won the Stanley Cup. They brought in Recce that year. Right. They brought in Doug Waite that year,
Keith
I believe, when Wesley. Or was he there?
Biz Nasty
I think. I think he was already there.
G
Ray Whitney.
Keith
No, he was there.
Biz Nasty
I think he was there as well. I'm trying to think of who else they would.
G
Was he responsible for drafting Stall and Cam Ward?
Biz Nasty
Yup.
Keith
Had to have been. Yeah. Good call, biz.
Biz Nasty
Yep, exactly.
Keith
So one. MVP of the playoffs, right?
Biz Nasty
77 years old. Man, what a run for that guy. Incredible. What else we got? All right, so the press conference that the Barry Colts had after winning the Eastern Conference final.
G
This guy's getting ruined.
Biz Nasty
So you know what? I respect the hell out of this guy. He came out and he's like, just poor judgment by me. I think he realized pretty quickly. And for anyone who didn't see. Why don't you play it quickly, G. Coach. Words probably escape you after that one. Maybe you can try your best.
Juice
No one cares.
Biz Nasty
Work harder. Okay, Sean, big moment for you.
Keith
A goal tonight.
Juice
Hostile environment.
Keith
What can you say about the way
Biz Nasty
your goaltender played in that one?
Juice
No one cares. Work harder.
Biz Nasty
Questions.
Juice
Can you just contrast what you must
R.A.
have been feeling six days ago, leaving
Juice
the arena, losing 6 1, and what you're feeling now?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, it's a good question.
Keith
No one cares. Work harder.
Juice
What he did in game six,
Keith
Really good. No one cares. Work harder.
Biz Nasty
Okay, you can cut it.
G
So can we get some context as, like, what happened? Did they win that game? Did they win the series?
Keith
No one cares.
Juice
What happened was. And first of all, I can't believe this is such a big deal. There's so many sensitive media guys and girls for how many daggers these media people throw like that. First of all, that's entertaining. If they did it every single day, I can understand you complaining, but the one time they do it and listen to some of those questions. Oh, how did you feel six games ago when you lost compared to tonight? Like, what do you think the answer is? Like, they won in game seven. So they came back and they beat Brantford in game seven. And I heard that they. They wanted the. The coach wanted to bring the whole team in to the press conference because, you know, he was so proud of them, and they kind of overcome the odds and they said no. So then he was kind of, I think, upset about that. So that was kind of their team slogan all year, is like, no one cares.
G
Work harder.
Juice
So they just kept reciting that. And I know agents in A bit. I've, I was on the ice with him in the summer. Like, he's a good kid. He's a good kid and you guys would love him. Like, he throws bombs, he's, he scores goals and he beats guys up. Like, who doesn't like that as a defenseman? So he kind of just followed suit with the coach. But I don't know. What do you guys think? Like, I didn't think it was, I
G
think, I didn't know the Barry Colts were even in playoffs. And now I know they're, they're advancing and he got, ended up getting fined or the organization got fined 15 grand for, like, what? Stuff that was detrimental to the league
Biz Nasty
where it's like, I'll speak on the other side a little.
G
Well, that's fine. But the whole hockey world's talking about it. And like you said, it was one press conference and yeah, it was a little off the rails, but like, can't we all just laugh about it? Like, yeah, they gotta get fined 15 grand. It was their slogan all year. And then the guy came out and issued an apology saying, okay, we were wrong doing it.
Keith
Like, it's, he saw Mark, he saw Marshawn lynch do it at the Super Bowl 20 years ago and he's like, oh, I can be a meme forever. This is fun, light hearted. Sorry, dude. You're getting run through the ringer in
G
the Canadian OHL should be paying him for free advertising.
Juice
How is that not funny?
G
Like, were you hilarious?
Keith
I think it's because they brought the kid into it. Like you, you bring the kid into it.
Biz Nasty
Oh, I just kind of feel for like. And I think Merrick tweeted this might have been him, like, that. I feel like the OHL report, it's not like you're doing it to Steve Simmons, who, by the way, his son reached out to me and was like, I love when you carve my dad. It's hilarious. You should have more. But I feel like some of them are like, younger, trying to get in and they just won't. The Easter conference final. You're just looking for a couple quotes for your article. I'm not saying it's the end of the world. I think I tweeted, settle down, Belichick, when we're on to Cincinnati press conference. But I, I, I feel, look, put it this way, for the guy to come out and be like, I probably shouldn't have done that. I feel like he knows the same. I don't think it's the end of the world if you Were flipping out about this. That's an overreaction. But the room. The room that they were in was a legit closet. It was a closet five feet by.
Juice
Wait, have you ever interviewed or talked to an OHL kid? Like, if you like other.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, fizz.
Juice
Like, what quotes are you getting? Like, he's gonna be, oh yeah, we got pucks deep and we just like persevered.
Biz Nasty
Like swipe right A for the boys.
G
The, the. The. The interviewers and the media people in there could have wrote an article about it. It would have been their most read article that sure. Ever wrote or talked about or whatever podcast they're on. It was a. Yeah. I don't.
Biz Nasty
Not a big deal. But it's. And now they're going to the final.
G
Now they're going. And now I'm locked in. I want to see this coach have success.
Biz Nasty
I think they were. Were they down 31 in the series? I think they were down. And I think the team they beat, which might have been Brantford, was.
Juice
Branford was a wagon. We know this and we wouldn't have
Keith
known this and probably never should.
G
The only time we talk about the OHL is when their crowds are given BO to all the players in Oshawa. That was the last time we talked about the OHL or when.
Biz Nasty
Or when the kid got suspended for. What do you say?
Keith
Shower before coming to the games.
G
They had to send out gate, wasn't it?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, yeah. Sim got a five game suspension for calling a kid a pussy gate.
G
Remember that?
Juice
Oh, I had a kid when I coached minor hockey. 30, 30 day suspension for that. And he's. And I had to go. We had to do like a, like a zoom call and we had to like make our argument. Well, what do you mean? He was calling him a pussycat, like a timid cat. And they're like, well, no. I'm like, well, yeah. Like, how do you know? So. It's a sensitive world sometimes. I think. I think. I think we care too much about words like action. Shouldn't mean more than words like boarding a guy from behind and almost breaking his neck. Should be more than some of the words. But anyways, that's another conversation.
G
Oh, I. I agree with you, buddy. It's gone mad.
Biz Nasty
Yeah. Well, Juice, thank you so much. We got R.A. coming on here. We appreciate you hopping on. I know you're grinding now. You and Biz. It's just night after night. When you get back from the late game, are you like, are you sleeping in late? Are you still up early?
G
Like he's got his wine, wine, wine bottle opener, and he hits the vino and lights his candle.
Juice
No, I don't. I actually went the. The first extra hand.
G
Not a sip.
Juice
Not a sip of alcohol in the first round. And then I had a couple opportunities just to have a few after. Sometimes after shows. Can't go every time. But the. The hardest thing for me is to not order, like, the Happy Burger when I get back to my room. Like, I. I love a smash burger with a vanilla milkshake and. And waffle fries. Like, I. It's so hard for me. I'm talking to my wife walking back, and she's like, you can order food again. I go, I'm gonna try so hard not to. Sometimes I cave.
Biz Nasty
Juice.
G
Do you. I enjoy the second round better because you're able to focus and zone in on. On, like, fewer series. Do you find the first round is a little bit, like, too much like, like March Madness, where you're scrambly brained a little bit, trying to remember all these different plays and calls and blah, blah, blah?
Juice
Yeah, but. But it is fun too, though, Biz, because you're like, oh, look, that's happening and that's happening and that. So it's chaotic and it's harder from. For our, you know, for what we do. But it is super exciting at the same time.
G
Right?
Juice
Like, some of these kids are playing their first ever playoff game, so it's, like, super passionate and fun to watch. And then, yeah, right, the second round settles in and you're. You're working one game at a time, which for people in broadcasting, they know that when you're working two or three games simultaneously, it's so like you're. You got a headache because you're looking. You're looking at the TV to the next screen like, every 10, 15 seconds, trying to keep an eye. Playing both have, like, covering one game at a time is so fun and
G
so much more fun. Last thing I got for you, Habs, winning that game two, one. Like your studio in Toronto, you guys must have been fired up because with Edmonton and. And I'm drawing Ottawa getting bounced in. In the first round like that, that would have been catastrophic for you guys, right?
Juice
We need our studio, Biz. Our studio.
G
No, I know, but I wasn't trying to.
Juice
We needed that.
G
We needed that. Yeah. No, I don't do playoffs, so I wasn't trying to claim it.
Juice
No, you got. You got equity for sure.
G
Yeah.
Juice
No, we need. We needed a Canadian team to still be. To be involved and relevant and like, this was the first year that I've worked in broadcasting that the Leafs didn't make the playoffs. So, like, what a difference. Just on having the Leafs in the first round in Toronto, walk into the studio, a bit of, like, air goes out of the balloon. But Montreal just seems like such a likable team and so easy to cheer for. So I'm hoping, like, all Canadians get behind Montreal. But the problem is Buffalo's so close. Like, I grew up going to Sabers games at the odd scalping tickets of my dad and my brother. I. I've never been to a Leaf game that I didn't play in. I've only went to Sabers games. So they're a team that everyone's getting behind, too. So we kind of. We're lucky where we get one of those two teams moving on in the third round.
G
Yeah, I went to more Buffalo games growing up. They used to give away free tickets at the. At my bank. They used to like the hair.
Juice
Did you really like to the odd biz and, like. Oh, yeah, I went to the tickets in the odd. Like, my dad. My dad's a big dude. He was, you know, a biker guy. And we would go, my brother and I, and we go walk down the alley, and like, all these guys would open up their big trench coats and they just have, like, tickets, and then, like, a gun right there so you could see the gun. Just, like, don't mess around kind of thing, right? And then my dad and the guy would kind of negotiate three tickets, and then we'd walk into the odd, and there'd be, like, nosebleeds, obviously, and it was so steep, you needed, like, a bungee cord to walk down to your feet.
Keith
I feel like Montreal, for other Canadians is the hardest team to root for. If you're not a fan of that team.
Juice
Well, just because you don't like the French people.
G
I just think that. I think that their team, and with Martin St. Louis at the helm, they're just likable. I think it just so.
Juice
So likable.
Biz Nasty
You think more Canadians on a whole, dislike the Montreal Canadiens than the Leafs?
Keith
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Oh, I feel like.
R.A.
No.
Biz Nasty
If you're not a Leafs fan and you're in Canada, you hate them.
Juice
What do you think that for real Yens?
Keith
Yeah, just. I mean, obviously outside looking in. I have no. Nothing to back this up but pick it.
Biz Nasty
Boston.
Keith
Yeah, maybe. I. I just think, like, they think they're their own country. You know what I mean? Like, they're. I don't know.
G
Oh, now you're getting political.
Juice
Yeah.
G
I mean, they have asked separation. Yes.
Biz Nasty
Dude, didn't that vote come down to the wire on separation?
Juice
Stop it.
Biz Nasty
Okay, okay. Oh, yeah, I forgot. You guys are number one.
G
Yeah. I don't know Quebec would be able to survive on their own. I think it's just good that we're all one. And we'll figure it out. We'll figure it out, right, Juice? We all love each other.
Juice
Pull vier on this podcast.
Biz Nasty
All right, Juice, you're the best, buddy. Thank you.
Juice
Yeah, boys. Good talking, buddy. See you guys.
Biz Nasty
The odd man. I wish I got to see a game in that building.
G
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Back to the Boston Garden. Like, I don't. Don't have like a ton of memories, but I remember the Bruins winning a playoff game there.
Keith
Just madness.
Biz Nasty
Leaving guys jumping on cars on Causeway Street. So a guy who definitely remembers that as well is RA. Time for RA's World. Bring him in. Bring the guy.
R.A.
Hello, everybody. Welcome to Ra's World here on the Spitting Chicklets podcast. Great to hear. Juice in the pod. One of my favorite guys and his old team, the three L's, Leo Lucas, Lacombe. Unbelievable what they're doing. Love that game last night. Lacombe, you know, 22 minutes of ice time. Second on the team, Leo Carlson. This guy's going to be a perennial selkie candidate like we saw with Kopitar and Bergeron the last few years. So awesome game. And. And G pointed out to me last night, shout out to the checks and the way they've been producing goalies lately.
G
Yeah, three.
R.A.
Three out of the current eight status a check goalies, Dostal, Dobish and Voda. That's the equivalent biz of like North Carolina producing three starting goalies in the NHL's final eight teams right now because population wise, which, you know, when you put it in those terms, absolutely kind of banana. So it's impressive as hell. And you have to think how much Dominic Kashik has factored into that growing up. Watching him, you know, with the. With the stories, you gotta, you know, guys want to grow up and be him. So.
G
100, dude. And. And there was also one more in the first round of playoffs, and I'm drawing a blank on. There was another check starter for a team that was bounced.
R.A.
Yeah, I only did this round. I'm trying to blank on it as well, but either way, good stuff. And, you know, we interviewed Leo at the draft of Nashville actually before he got drafted, and, man, I think we all. We all like, started rooting for that guy. That day and you know, he, he's, you know, he has a stutter. I think he's, you know, I don't even know if he has anymore, but we weren't aware of that and the way he just didn't let it affect him and power through it and I think I mentioned before Brian Rust on the, on the Penguins used to have one and he started a foundation and Leo reached out to him, started his own foundation. So you know he, it's a great kid. It was just made him like you just made rooted from a lot more on what he's been doing now and the interview we saw Kyle a couple a week or so ago. He could tell he's getting his confidence and you know, feeling comfortable in his skin like, you know, tripping with VL there his teammate colon. He's annoying. I'm in the locker with him so. Good stuff, man. I like, I appreciate that stuff.
G
Velco was the other one and he had a great first round, I thought.
R.A.
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah with. With Utah and how about Montreal getting their own Blade gang? I I apparently the they reached out to the Buffalo Blade gang paired up but I guess though one of them got assaulted. I don't know if he got slapped or punched or whatever. Leaving the game last night and you know, posted about it's like, you know, and this ain't, this ain't about Buffalo fans. It takes one donkey. But you know, if you're any arena, if you see you know like people like with fans out of town like, you know, I'm not saying put your ass on the line for a stranger, but just say, hey man, chill out. It's a game. Like don't be afraid to tell someone to knock the off.
Biz Nasty
I know people get drunk surprised by that. If I didn't get slapped leaving that arena from the night. Nicest people I've ever met. Can't believe after a win a Buffalo fan would go after the Montreal Blade gang guy. That's very surprising to hear.
R.A.
Yeah, yeah. I mean, yeah, whatever you have fun track people but you know, don't be putting, don't be putting hands on people. I gee, I think we gotta, we gotta, you know, reach out to them. Get him for the chick. Let's cup whenever the next one is, wherever it is, man. So something we should jump on Josh Stone. Just an incredible pickup by the Sabers with the season he had what he's been doing the playoffs like they got him in Kesselring for Paterka there. An unreal move by Buffalo. Love watching that kid play? Let's see, what else?
Keith
Oh, Evan Adams.
R.A.
Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Hey, is he gonna. Is he gonna win the GM of the year?
Biz Nasty
Someone tweeted for the Buffalo banging right before the game. The crowd would probably go bananas if they brought Kevin Adams back to do that.
R.A.
If you got a better chance of seeing me do it, I think.
Biz Nasty
I don't know if he'd want to do it. I don't know if they would do it, but you'd have to think, think.
G
Consider at least. At least a sword chug.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, but you gotta turn that down. Although there was a guy in the crowd last night,
G
he did. They put him on and he crushed it.
Biz Nasty
I saw a video online of a guy. He had it. He had it, like, a little straight, but, like, not like where mine was, like, upside down. He had it kind of just like waiting and slowly and then no spillage either.
G
Like, Carl, you haven't been to work. Yeah, I've been practicing my sword chug
Keith
ever since I saw Wit.
G
I want to get on the Jumbotron.
R.A.
Well, the last night was the actor William Fickler that did it. You know, he was the guy in the Perfect Storm. He was the scumbag in Heat, too, that tried to let double cross Robert De Niro. I didn't recognize him with long gray hair, but, yeah, it's pretty cool. Like, a nice little thing they do there. I. I honestly, guys, the person I text most with during the playoffs is Ma Dukes. Like, she. My mother. She loves, loved the game. So last night, she's like, saw the squad. She's like, yes, Buffalo's still cooking. I'm like, Like, Mama just said, like, Like a. A millennial.
Biz Nasty
Like, that's what Ryder says. Oh, you're cooking right now.
R.A.
Yeah, I. I was like, where the. Like, where did you hear that? That Ma. So, yeah, she's a huge fan also to, like, Minnesota.
G
Oof.
R.A.
I know they're missing Erickson, Ek, and what's his name, bro? Dean, but I didn't think they were going to be getting spanked this bad. I don't. I don't know if the goaltender matters much. Minnesota just looks like a completely different team than we saw in the regular season.
Keith
And.
R.A.
But, you know, kudos to Matt Boldy. I mean, he got fucking crucified by Nate. Dog in the corner there, he slowly gets up. He's heading to the. Out of the zone, and Minnesota's, you know, they're making a rush down ice, and he dole. You know, he made a dive to get the blue line so they wouldn't be offsides. Like after he just got, you know, almost high, like basically almost murdered in the corner there. I don't know. That's just like the hot. The grit, the effort that we love in the playoffs. And it was, you know, I know it didn't work out for him, but it was just an awesome effort.
Biz Nasty
And he took a punch from Parker Kelly, I believe too, he was giving it to the ref a little bit that I forgot to mention with juice that McCarron said against Dallas, like their D, we were just dumping it in and punishing their D. And I believe, like Faber and maybe one of the Folignos are like. It seemed by the end of the series, they didn't even really want to go back and get it. And now we have to figure out a way because they're just so different. They skate better than Dallas's D, you know, besides Heskin and really like. And they're more mobile and they're getting up ice. We have to figure out a way to. To kind of slow their D down.
G
Gotta get your licks in. I was gonna ask you boys, do you think they overth goalie change? I mean, we were talking about put.
Keith
No, you got to do it.
Biz Nasty
And now you go back to Wallstadt.
Keith
Yeah. It's exactly what Merle says. And if you're a Minnesota fan too, the series isn't over until you lose at home. Like, you got to take care of business. These next two games, you're gonna. They're gonna go back to Wallstead, I would imagine. I thought they were going to go back to him during the game just because the. The first goal, the backhand of one that was. That was weak. And then what was it? The third one, Another weak one. Was it the nature school? Like, it was the two saves you got to have. So I definitely going back to Wallstab. But if you're Minnesota, you got to just be excited to play at home. Get ready. And I think Colorado too has done a really good job of holding up. Like the forwards getting in the way of the. The Minnesota four checkers just given that D man an extra half a second because that means the world is a D man.
Biz Nasty
I can't believe R.A. i don't remember seeing a series with three days off.
R.A.
Exactly. Took the words out of my mouth. And you got to think that benefits Minnesota, right? With, you know, like especially with Eric Sinek might be back on the lineup. Yeah. I don't know if the builder was booked for a Console or something. But that's, that's kind of crazy. I don't remember seeing a three day old boys.
G
I think that the fresh get fresher. Like Colorado, man, even more.
Keith
Yeah, yeah, a good point.
G
I just, just.
Juice
I don't know.
G
That's. To me, it gives like you have
Biz Nasty
a little bit more respect for the Kings now. I mean, some of those games were close.
G
Yeah, right.
R.A.
Yeah. I mean, three of the four of them, the Kings weren't until the end, basically.
G
I, I think it gives me more, also more respect for Colorado in the fact that they, they can play any way you want and they're like, this is how we have to play to beat them. They'll frustrate you. And I know it's not how we want to play, but will get the opportunity in later rounds to kind of do what they're doing now. Right. It feels like they're having more fun in this series than they did the
Keith
last one because Minnesota tries to play like them, which that feeds into Colorado. I was just thinking now, if it, like, if you're Carolina and you're hoping to get to the cup finals, I think it could be a better series than people may think, now that I'm thinking about it. Because of what la, like, at least had tough games against them.
R.A.
And just jump back to Montreal, what you guys were saying a few minutes ago, I'll be honest, like, I've never had Bruins fans come up to me and like, almost like talking on the side of the mouth and like, hey, Magul. Like, I, I think I'm rooting for the Canadians right now. Like, what? Yeah, like, I mean, not. They're not being disloyal. They just like. Because the Canadians are like, so fun to watch. And when you watch those games in Montreal, that crowd, I mean, I think 90% of the audience has a red jersey on and you. You can't help but like, get goosebumps, you know, watching what goes on up there. So, yeah, I've had more than one Bruins fan the last couple weeks come up to me and say, yeah, they're kind of on the Montreal bandwagon. Pretty funny. And also. Yeah, and also too, I think, like, with like a lot of the, you know, younger generations in our state, they haven't really experienced the rivalry that, you know, like, like us, you know, us, our era did. So they, they don't have that same, I guess, nostalgia or hatred or whatever. So. All right, moving along, I, I don't think you guys mentioned the Selkie finalists. I don't think I heard, heard, heard that. Anthony C. Brock Nelson, Nick Suzuki. They were the three finalists. Like, I mean I think Suzuki is going to be the chalk on the, on that one, but he's the way he's been playing. And the Masterton trophy that was also announced the finalist, Jonathan Taves, Rasmus Stallion and Gabriel Landiscog. And I mean, honestly, like, I think one of those three guys, I think it's, you know, a pick them basically would.
G
I think Darlene hands down.
Biz Nasty
So the fact Darlene has been through what he has been through and then he's up for the Norris Drew that. That's crazy. And then the Landiscog one is wild because during our live stream I forgot to bring it up. I don't think I was alone in thinking Landiscog wasn't going to be playing hockey again. Like, you just kept hearing setback and all the time he missed and it was like, man, I give this guy credit, but he's probably done and he get. He gets an enormous goal. The other night game, Game one, it's like. Or it was a game two. It's incredible. That is three awesome stories and what tapes went through. And his. I think they, you know, he went to. He was in the Ayahuasca train. Right. Like trying to figure out everything and three awesome candidates there.
R.A.
Yeah.
Keith
Especially those two guys. Taves and Landy. And Landy. Like, and we all know once, like it gets in your mind, like that might be it. I might be done. Like, usually your body just kind of shuts down and like your love for the game. But the fact that they were able to battle through that and get to where they are and still playing is amazing and. And just shows their true love for the game and. And what they bring to it. And you tell me right now, like Buffalo, if you're Buffalo, like every guy on that team would do anything for Darlene. Right? Just what he's been through. Same thing. Taze. Like it's. It's cool when. Because when guys show that type of love for the game, like it gets sent back to you a million times over.
G
And also like, I mean, don't. Don't tell us that Dana White. But like, like the mental health aspect of it. Imagine being like, like that young, maybe more so for Landy where there's still a lot of tread left on the tire. Like to be stripped of your livelihood at that age where you still have so much juice left in the tank and you have these unbelievable teams that you don't feel like you can be a part of. Like, that would, that would be brutal. Dude, I couldn't imagine the, the mental grind of having to go through the year, the few years that he had to go through. So same with Taves, right? Like, get the thing for what Taves always, like, he, he was at the top, man. Three Stanley Cups, like, that was a. That's probably the biggest modern day dynasty that we've seen next to what the Islanders and, and the Oilers. Like, when's the last time we saw a dynasty? Like three cups in five years.
R.A.
Yeah, we're gonna see it with Florida, of course. Edmonton, what was it? Four and six, I believe. Back. Okay.
G
Yeah, well, I think it was just back to back to back year off and then back to back.
R.A.
Yeah. 80, 84, 85, 87, 88, 90. Yeah, they like five over those years. But I'm glad you mentioned Headman. Like, you know, he obviously took some time off to take care of himself and he released the statement. But man. And I know social media is like just a toxic wasteland, but the, the reaction was just pathetic. Like, just like these loser hottos. Like, oh, he's got. He's got all the money in the world. Blah, blah. It's like, bro, like that, that doesn't mean. Yeah, money is great. It helps. It helps with stuff that G just put up there. And it's like, but that doesn't mean at the end of the day. And I don't know, it was just awful. Awful takes. You just mentioned Dana White with that stuff he said. Like, it's like, oh, unattractive to woman. It's like, you know, it's more unattractive to women. Dana slapping him in the face. So like, I don't know, I just, I just hate that Hotto attitude and that dirtbag bubble of love. Sponge down Tampa. Like, you know, there's rumors all the time of old players.
G
Like, he's talking like some guy went on basically Hogan's buddy.
R.A.
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like, exactly. This guy who, who let the 24 inch Pythons run Hulkamate on his old lady, like in the chair. And like, he, he's. He says he. And he literally says it's rumors on the streets. It's my opinion.
G
Let's not even repeat it.
Biz Nasty
No, I'm not.
R.A.
No, I'm distinctly not. And then, and then he repeats pizza. It's just like, it's just, it's this scumbag.
G
There was a rumor about. Rumor about Headman. The same that was going on with all Mark, where these Idiots, like, they just take it.
R.A.
Exactly.
G
You know, when it comes to the mental health stuff, just like, let these guys be. Let them go and figure their thing out and. And. And. And not. And not pile on. Right?
R.A.
Yeah, yeah. Just. Just, I don't know, donkey behavior. But going back to a little more positivity. You guys mentioned the call to candidates already. We got to talk. What? Schaefer. The night kicking off the draft lottery was probably the cutest segment we've seen all year. He FaceTimed, you know, Sydney and Matt Martin's daughters, and he had them explain how. How the draft went. But. But the best was afterwards when he was hanging up, they're like, bye, Shafe. Like, calling him shave. I don't. Man, that was just like, some awesome stuff. So who. Whoever came out with that. It was brilliant stuff. And continuing with that, the draft lottery. This is another thing, like, meathead central. The whole rigged lottery talk. Oh, man, I got, like, no time for this. It's like, like, like. So. Okay, okay. What's the logic here? So the NHL, what the. They're gonna, like, with. Risk their reputation, like, swear people to secrecy. Ernst and Young is gonna.
G
I have to admit that I. I said that. I was just on tilt a little bit.
R.A.
Yeah. Everyone's kidding around. Don't take it so seriously.
Biz Nasty
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Everyone is not kidding.
G
Not everybody. I was.
Juice
Not at all.
R.A.
There's a. There's a. Probably a trolling aspect to a G. But no, like, there are people, like, convinced. And then I love my boy Chief, but I think he said, like, this one was rigged just like last year's was for the Islanders and the one for Bedad was. And it's like, I come like. Like, like this one, though.
Biz Nasty
Like, if you want to.
R.A.
If.
Biz Nasty
If you're. These are rigged, like, Truther. You really believe it. The envelopes won. Okay. With the. The balls. Now, like, the way they did it this year with the ping pong balls. I don't. How would you ever rigged. I don't even get it.
R.A.
And of course, they had a commercial break before and people like, oh, okay. What? They had a secret.
Biz Nasty
See the video of Winnipeg's ball going up first? Yeah, that was. That was tough to see. And then did you see Gary?
G
What? See Gary when the number eight was going up?
R.A.
Yeah. People like, oh, there was helium that in that one. It's like, oh, man. But, like, even again, even if it happened, like. Like, Toronto already makes all the money they can. They sell it every game. There's like, like to what? Okay, we're gonna fix this. So this team drafts a guy who may or may not turn out to be a superstar. It just guarantees nothing, man. I just like the conspiracy theory brain out there. It's crazy. And also, that's what a lottery is. It's called a lottery. They went from five to one. Not crazy.
Biz Nasty
San Jose won the lottery.
G
We were on the live. Yeah, yelled it. I was on tilt. I got hand up. I was just pissed. It was a tough, tough 24 hours for busy boy here. So my, my fault, everybody.
Biz Nasty
San Jose technically won the lottery more than Toronto. Right?
Keith
Agreed.
R.A.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, and it seems like, I don't know if is like, actually, gee, do you think McKenna is the slam dunk that everybody's like, convinced he's been for the last year, or is this a little more wide open than people think? I think it's more wide open than people think. I think Iver Stenberg, I mean, Merle's is another guy Murrells has been talking about for years. Like, he was just dominating the SHL this year, breaking all these like, rookie records. So. So I don't know. Like, I, I think Iver Stenberg is, is based off style of play. I think Iver Stenbarg is the safer pick. But it's tough on a guy like McKenna because he's supposedly a generational talent. We saw what he did in Medhat, kind of took a step back with
Biz Nasty
Penn State, but I guess wasn't he second in the country in points per game in college hockey as a 17 year old?
G
And if you go back to Bedard when he played in the in WHL with the Regina pats, I think McKenna, the year prior playing in WHL had way more points per game too. So, like, what he did at the same age in, in the WHL compared to what Bedard did is more impressive. And then he makes the jump and listen, the first half of the year for McKenna, yeah, there's going to be an adjustment period, just like there will be next year. But what he did in the second half is like, oh, fuck, man. This is how this kid accelerates when he's thrown adversity and new challenges. I don't know, it would be hard. It would be very, very hard to say no to McKenna.
Keith
And he didn't have his line mate, that Aiden Fink kid. Like, if you're on a college team, it's your first year playing college and you're missing the second best player. It's hard to Produce. You're playing against men in college, right, Whit?
Biz Nasty
Like, yeah, and I think when he came back is when he started like, lighting it up.
R.A.
Yeah, when he started going crazy.
G
It's not an easy thing. Man, this is going to be awesome.
R.A.
What's up? What's up?
Biz Nasty
What, what did you think of Steve Simmons question to Pelly and Chaika?
R.A.
It was obnoxious as hell, though. He could have asked that same question in a much more respectful way, like to, to like, and I guess his wife and kids with it just, just, it was just obnoxious. Like you, you can say that same. Ask that same question in a much classier like, like way. Like I, I get it. There are concerns and, and you know, like, we talked about it with Biz, obviously, but like, yeah, it was just, it was. And that's why people can't stand the guy. And he's the same guy who made up this stupid hot dog story about Phil Kessel. So, yeah, I, I didn't like it at all. I, I, I, I'm not a chick. I, I don't know, Jake. I have no feelings one way or the other, but it's just so, it was just such a disrespectful thing to call a guy a, you know, a con man like that. Yeah, shitty stuff. What's up?
G
And, and he's right there. Why don't you ask him? Like, yeah, well, I talked to Chaika if you have a question and obviously word it differently. Like, obviously I'm not a big traitor guy. Even I thought I'm like, ah, yeah, maybe it's funny for like a viral moment for everybody to like, oh my God, like chaos and drama and it gives us to talk about and we're a hockey podcast. But yeah, that was a bit, that was a bit much. He also dropped Matthews's Covid.
R.A.
Like he's, yeah, yeah, he's a donkey. And like, I think actually Pelly like, kind of told Jake, like, I'll, I'll take these questions. I, that's why I don't think Jake answered that particular one. But yeah, either way it was shitty stuff. But some more great news. The first round ratings set records. The best like, first round ratings ever. Gary was on back a few the other day. He cited the Olympics, obviously. And he also cited he, he did rivalry because of course he binged that back in the, uh, last year and said like, he brought all that, that brought a lot of fans in as well. I mentioned a couple episodes of the great Play by Play guys, we have But I want to mention specifically Shane Knighty on the color. Like, he's been absolutely fantastic, man. He's so good at breaking down the game, like, especially for new fans. Like, he puts it in layman's terms. So you. You know, if you're not familiar with the game, you understand it. And Vegas fans. When I tweeted about the other night. Vegas fans love him. He's, you know, he's obviously out there during the regular season, so I want to give him a shout out. And also, I mean, I think we said it before, but Eric Johnson, you talk about.
Keith
He's been incredible.
G
Oh, he's awesome.
R.A.
You know, ESPN brought him. Just an absolute natural. He's Bob with shoes and who's unbelievable the chemistry there from the jump. I mean, you know, ej, he's as funny as hell, charismatic as hell, and he's awesome what he does. And he had a, you know, a little. What I get together with Scott Van Pelt the other night. They never met each other was. It was actually pretty funny. I don't know if you saw that. Yeah, he's like, hey, we never met. And he's like, oh, ej, Can I call you that? He's like, oh, svp. But no one calls me that. And then when they finished up, he's like, hey, thanks a lot, svp. It was kind of. It was kind of funny, but it was great. Little good stuff there, man. Eric is killing it, so. Good stuff.
G
Did a lot of good ads. Like, Carberry was great. I think he's off to the world championships now, so he won't be at the desk anymore, but, yeah, EJ is the best. Handsome bastard, too. Jesus Christ.
Juice
Yeah.
Keith
Holy.
R.A.
Yeah, he's hilarious. Yeah, he mentioned. Yeah, he. He was about the weather changing. He's like, I'm a bit of a green thumb. I planted some flowers yesterday and then probably gonna have frost on it. So Marley, you know, he's. He's just a character, but some. Yeah, some shitty dudes at ESPN if. Like hockey wrestling, Star wars fans, a lot of hockey media folks. I'm not sure if you ever met him. Well, I don't pronounce my hours, but it was Arda. Ocal. Yeah.
G
Yeah, they let him go, unfortunately.
R.A.
Yeah, he tweeted about it yesterday. And, like, I. I mean, I've never. Never actually met him in person. We've, you know, been interacting for. For several years on. On online social media. But everybody who. Who. Who knows this guy. Me, and he's just like a gem of a human being. And, and you know, wherever he ends up next like that, the company's gonna have a great guy. He's just awesome at what he does. And you know, I was bummed out that, that they, they let him go. So just want to give him good vibes and I'm sure he's gonna land on his feet somewhere. So generally a great dude.
G
Absolutely.
R.A.
And another TV note, Ted Turner. Like, and you guys best. TNT did a wonderful tribute that Liam did. Uh, you know, he's a businessman who became like. Like I would. The 20th century is like one of the most influential media titans of the last century. Died at 87. He had that awful Lewy body dementia he diagnosed eight years ago. You know, it's a type of dementia that affects your, like, body and your nervous system. But I mean, this guy, he. He invented like the 24 Hour News Channel. When he launched CNN 1980, he started WTBS. And I don't. I know I'm older than you guys, but that was on every cable system in America. Like, so that's why there were so many people became Atlanta Braves fans because you would get every single brace. Game on tv, the Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, and Obviously, of course, TNT. Just an interesting guy. Won the America's cup in 1977. Pretty much single handedly brought the American bison back from the brink of extinction. Like, you know, it was like, wow. Yeah.
G
He's one. He was one of, if not the largest landowner in the United States.
R.A.
Yeah. And all from.
Juice
For.
R.A.
And all for good reason. Like, conservative, like, so people won't go like, build, build on that land, you know, to keep the.
Biz Nasty
How did you do that with the bison?
G
He owns half of Montana, Brenda.
Keith
Maybe. I don't know.
R.A.
Yeah. Yeah. Got him.
G
I'm dead serious. I think somehow, I think if you Google it, G. He. He literally owns like half of the land in Montana.
Biz Nasty
Wow. So ra. This is a billionaire that you're down with 100.
R.A.
You know, he's a billionaire. He's. He's a great American.
Keith
He started cnn.
R.A.
Yeah. He cared for his country and, you know, he won what's best. What's best for us. And he did things toward those ideals. And, you know, I, you know, I, I mean, I'm not. I don't know any billionaires. I wish, like, guys this day and age maybe did that a little bit
G
more rather than he put his money where his mouth is. He was big on philanthropy. And yes, he was a. He was a G in that regard as well.
R.A.
He owns 2 million acres across America and in just Montana alone. 113. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Did he ever own. Did he own the Braves?
R.A.
Yeah, he actually coached him for one game.
Biz Nasty
It was really.
R.A.
Yeah, he, he. The. The coaching a fight and he, he. It's hilarious as a picture. He, you know, like a baseball manager, they wear the uniform. He coached them one game. But like whoever was commissioner at the time was like, oh, you, you can't do this. Which I don't know why when he owned the freaking team. But yeah, one game. He coached the Braves back in the day. And also there's a. I highly recommend the like, you know, if you don't know about him or if you want to learn more. It's a fantastic docu series on hbo. It's called. It's called Call Me Ted does. It's phenomenal. It does a deep dive on his life career, the whole impact and you really just see like how much of like an American original this guy was. So highly recommend that if you like, like I said, want to learn more about the dude. Great piece in the Athletic by. By Jeremy Rutherford about the great Tony X. The hilarious Twitter account. He stumbled onto a playoff game 10 years ago.
Biz Nasty
I remember that.
R.A.
This is lit. It went viral. He became a huge Blues fan and be like very quickly became one of the funniest people on hockey Twitter. Like, yeah, this is, this is the first time I've ever watched hockey and this has been lit for these first 45 seconds. He's like white people been hiding hockey from us for years, bro. This lit. I don't know who this Kane guy is, but we got to stop him. And this is the funniest. After the Hawks had pulled Corey Crawford for an extra attack, this dude just said it and left like and boom. Like he was off and running and you know, he ends up meeting Jon Hamm and gets invited to All Star games and. But, but the crux of the story was there was a shocks fan, Nikki Marawelli her name is. They were following each other. They started interacting, started texting and like few years later she flew up to St. Louis. They hung out for a week, ended up meeting up at the Winter Classic and now they live together and like you know, their engagement is pending. It was just an awesome story that. That was in the Athletic and he is a funny bastard man. So I'll give. Give a shout out to Tony X. Let's see this.
G
No. Hey, they got. They're engaged now.
R.A.
Well, they're not.
Biz Nasty
No, it.
R.A.
It's. It's pending. It's like well, impending.
Biz Nasty
Well thanks for ruining the surprise for us.
R.A.
It was in the story. It was in the story, though. I read it because like, she. No, she designed. She designed the ring and picked it out. So one of those like, she knows. She knows it's come or whatever.
Keith
Make sure he gets a prenup.
R.A.
No fault state. No false date. Don't go off. Don't go there. The ahl, they had a. An h egregious non call the other night. Springfield versus Providence. It cost Providence game one. I mean, the dude was offside by a foot. But the ahl, they. They don't have a review system set up at Darren Drager. DHL come out. They owned up to it. They're going to have blue line cameras already in planning, but they're going to bring a re. A review process in next year, which obviously that's a perfect reason because that's just awful for a team.
Biz Nasty
Thought it was on side. Wait, they don't have review. I know. I thought they did in the playoffs offs.
R.A.
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, I guess they don't.
R.A.
Brutal. No. No excuse not to. Okay, a couple more here. Oh, last night I. I ran over the tavern after the cabs save his game to grab a bite to eat. And a bunch of dudes come in like, you know, eight to 10 of them. And like, I. You know, usually people, like, they may see my face, whatever, they hear me, hear me talking. And dude's like, usually, hey, you already. You're right. And the dude's like, are you the Admiral? I was like, I kind of like that. I was like, it sounds like much more bossy. I was like, I am. A bunch of dudes from South Dakota, they were in town for. One of them's getting married to a girl from Charleston. And there was the bachelor party for these few days, and he's getting married this weekend to a Charlestown girl, but he went to Salem State, played hockey for a year. A couple of these guys. But what was interesting, you know, you know, obviously North Dakota, like, huge hockey hotbed. And you would think, okay, South Dakota, like, just south of them. You know, there's probably a lot of hockey there. But these dudes said they were only like the. I think the 9th and 10th, like kids from South Dakota to play college hockey at any level. Like, I was like, are you. Like, that's kind of crazy considering, like, you know, again, right above them. North Dakota produces all these players, but
Biz Nasty
I remember a USHL playing Sioux Fall. Oh, my God. Yeah, that guy's offsides by. By a little bit. Looks like the Kreider 1 Sioux Falls Stampede. They're in, they're in South Dakota, I believe. I believe. And that barn was incredible. I remember Vanek was on the team and I was like, holy, this guy's unreal. I think he ended up playing the next year as well, then went to Minnesota. So I was a little bit surprised. Maybe you'll see more players now.
R.A.
They got Augustana now too. Boys, that Augustana, the new college hockey program is, is in South Dakota.
Biz Nasty
Remember next few years from South Dakota.
Keith
Remember Brock Lesnar told us he's from South Dakota. And he was like, we didn't, we never even had, I don't even think they had a rink.
Biz Nasty
He said, yeah, 3034 registered hockey players in the state of South Dakota for 24, 25. I think by 2030, that'll be at 10,000. And then we're, then we're to close. Cooking with gas here.
Keith
What would like Massachusetts be with, I
Biz Nasty
don't know, probably a shitload more.
R.A.
Yeah, way up there. But yeah, Brooks Metzella's name is, he's the coach of the, the Badlands Sabers. They're in the NA3HL. I think it's like they're all third level or whatever. So anyways, just give him a shout out, congrats on getting married. And you know, I hate to end on, on a down note, but I just want to acknowledge Massachusetts state trooper Kevin Trainor. He's 30 years old. He, he was killed the other night. He just finished doing a detail. And for people out of state, not familiar, it's like a flag man. And they call him in other states, but Massachusetts, they, you know, they hire policemen to, you know, for public safety if whether they're doing utility work or stuff on the road. And he just finished a detail on his way home at 2 in the morning. And the call come over the radio that there was a wrong way driver on, on route like Route 1 north, but someone was coming down the Southland. This is a road I'm going a zillion times. And you know, he, he was done work. He, you know, he wasn't necessarily obligated to go. He could have went home, but he responded to the scene and the idiot driving the car smashed it over and killed and both of them died. It's just an awful, awful tragedy. And now, you know, like as a mass hole like, you know, who's driven that road, it's like to think, you know, this guy like, you know, showed up when he didn't have to and fucking sacrifice his Life for, like, whoever was on that road, man, it just. It's just so sad. He just bought a house with his fiance and. And gee, I know you have a GoFundMe. I think we should post a link shared on our Twitter. So, you know, we send out our deepest condolences to his family, his friends, and, you know, his peers at the Mass. State Police. It's just. Just. It's tough, sad thing. And again, I. I take the end on a download, but, you know, we want to acknowledge that. I. I certainly do. And yeah, it's a tough one, boys. But.
Keith
But.
R.A.
So, yeah, let's talk about something.
G
Yeah, no, no, thanks for bringing that up.
Keith
I didn't even hear that. That's horrible.
R.A.
Incredible.
Biz Nasty
Guys, I know her state troopers post the picture, like, on Instagram stories. I was like, I hadn't heard it and then read the article.
R.A.
Is horrible. Yeah. Yeah.
Biz Nasty
And he definitely saved people, too.
R.A.
Exactly. That's what, like, you know, it's, you know, again, he was on his way home and I mean, you know, like,
Keith
anyone who's going, Anyone who's finishing a detail, all they want to do is get home. The fact that he did that, man, just goes to show you with the type of guy he was, that. That is incredible because how many more people did that guy. That's terrible.
G
So was the. Was the guy just drunk and didn't realize he was on the wrong side of the road?
R.A.
Those. The particulars haven't come out yet. It happened, well, very early yesterday morning, basically, but those details haven't come out. But. But yeah, he. I mean, he. He definitely saved who knows how many lives. And like I said, the fact that after a detail, he. He reported to the scene and, you know, and lost his life for. For us folks here in Massachusetts, yeah, it's. It's. It's terrible. And like I said, we. We couldn't extend our. Our sympathies anymore. So I. I hope people are doing okay.
Keith
So.
R.A.
But. All right, boys, this weekend, what's going on? Anything? I feel like we gotta, like, I don't know.
G
No, no, I get it. I know it's a transition out of that, but, you know, it is.
R.A.
But, you know, something we gotta talk about.
G
So we got. We got Carolina and Philly. Game three tonight.
R.A.
Yep. Seasonal line for Philly.
G
How do you guys feel?
Keith
I think Philly's gonna really scum it up.
Biz Nasty
I need Philly to win that game, though. We don't want.
R.A.
Yeah. We don't want three.
Biz Nasty
Three. Nothing serious year.
R.A.
Yeah, but I mean, Carolina's been like a scythe through wheat right now, just dominating. But I think Philly, I think Philly pulls a W out of their ass tonight. I think the crowd be. Be rock us and make it a 2:1 and see what happens going forward.
Biz Nasty
But yeah, that's the only game tonight, right?
G
Yeah, Solo. We got it. Tonight, 8:00'. Clock.
Biz Nasty
Oh, biz early night for you, buddy.
Keith
We need tip it back. Like how do we know anything about that?
Biz Nasty
No, no, nothing. I don't know what that's from. I mean you saw him truck stick. That doer who I actually saw resigned with Pittsburgh today. He looked fine on that. I don't know what happened later in
G
the series, but they should just dress gritty for warm up and have him skate the line. Just kind of maybe change up the momentum a little bit, you know.
Biz Nasty
I like that. I like liars are plus 140. All right. If you want to.
R.A.
Yeah.
Biz Nasty
You believe in them?
R.A.
Yeah. Well, no, I've. Yeah, I'm excited. I'm on the way going right now. So I, I haven't been. Which actually not the worst thing. I've probably saving a couple bucks but. But like I don't. I haven't even been looking at the lines but actually what have you. That documentary on series on HBO about the. You know those free climbers, those crazy nuts who climb like rock walls.
G
I forget the name of it, but Free Solo.
R.A.
No Free Soul was the Alex Honold won a couple years ago. But there's. There was. It's a four Potter with another dude. He was actually another one with Rivals with him. And no, it's pretty good. Worth checking out. But I, I like when you watch that. I can't believe with those like. Like they do that with like no ropes. Like to go up a 2,000 foot mountain man.
Biz Nasty
Yeah, they're tapped.
R.A.
Absolutely.
G
They're adrenaline junkies.
R.A.
They need it.
G
It's like their croc.
Biz Nasty
I do know that a week from this Saturday, so nine days boys. I will be on Family Feud.
G
Congrats, buddy. Right?
Biz Nasty
I mean let me tell you boys,
G
like, you're no Stu Finer, but congrats.
Biz Nasty
Buddy Minahan. Jersey Jerry Rico and myself with me and Stu Finer have a. The worst fast money matchup you've ever seen. I mean I was asked the question was. One of the questions was what would be somebody's interest on a dating app that you wouldn't. That you'd know. Like I don't want to, you know, swipe right or whatever. I didn't hear it Correctly. I said ugly. That. That's not an interest. Stu Finer went with Nazism. I mean, so when you talk about that, I think he had no point. I think I won that fast money with maybe 20 points. So, yeah, I kind of, you know, I think Portnoy tweeted. I skated by some ridicule based on Stu's answers, but I wasn't much better. I was decent in the first match. But in breaking news, so Portnoy, myself, Jersey Jerry, Rico, Kirk Minahan, we're being joined by Stu. We were given another option, another opening. We can have six, and Stu's coming.
Keith
You're trying to win.
Biz Nasty
No, you don't need us. Stu's gonna be money. The brighter the lights, the better Stu is. And he's entertaining.
Keith
He will not get.
G
Yeah, he just needed a few reps.
Biz Nasty
We went to dinner after, actually. Me, him, and Frankie Borelli. And now Stu's in. I just saw Dave's tweet. So that's being filmed Saturday the 16th in Atlanta. I can't wait for that.
R.A.
You must be fired up, man. Huh?
Biz Nasty
Like, Like. Oh, is that a video he's released?
G
I didn't even. I listen.
Keith
One of the best shows of all.
G
I just saw the title, and I retweeted it.
Biz Nasty
I just picture Steve Harvey's face. If he had said Nazism in front of him, he probably, you know, you know, the Harvey looks into the camera, he gives. I can't wait to be on that show. Very excited for that. We got to get a win. I don't think I can say who we're playing. And then other news. Oh, so no laying up as a golf podcast. They have a podcast off of that that they do not discuss golf with Tron and Big Randy, two of the guys that are part of the no Laying up team. It's called Trap Draw. I've been a listener for a while. Tron, the other night tweeted, wow, this playoff hockey is incredible. I'm into it now. Like, and I. I think. I. I don't know. I responded to him. I got the look. I am on the Trap Draw next week. We're. We're recording. It's a.
Keith
A.
Biz Nasty
Basically a podcast about anything and everything. They monitor situations. They look around the world at all different stories to talk about. They want to learn about the NHL and the Stanley cup playoffs. So I'll be making an appearance on that.
Juice
Oh, wow.
Biz Nasty
Assuming that'll be out next week as well. Very excited on that.
G
Are they good golfers?
Biz Nasty
Yeah, they're all they're all good golfers. Yeah, they, they don't really get involved in, like, they have their own YouTube golf stuff, but they never really, they don't really mix or do stuff with like, you know, the YouTube golf crowd that you saw on the Internet Invitational.
G
Would they be a good sandbagger opponent? Like, do they crank the booze or are they kind of more a little straight narrow?
Biz Nasty
Like, I think they're pretty purist in terms of golf and not being, you know, either on gummies or shrooms in your case, or, you know, 14 pink Whitney Nips, me and Keith's case. But I'll bring it up.
R.A.
I'll bring it up and I'll bring that docu series. By the way, it's called the Doc wizard and a dude's name is Dean Potter. Just for anybody that was listening might want to watch it. The doc was on hbo, so. All right, boys, again, playoffs have been great. Love chiming in. It's been fun. So I think wrap it up here. Unless. Any final thoughts?
Biz Nasty
No. No. All right, let's get the.
Keith
Go get him tonight.
Biz Nasty
Tonight. And thank you everyone for tuning. We'll be back Monday. Shout out game notes once again for their hundredth episode. Go check that out. It was yesterday.
Keith
It won't happen, won't happen, won't happen again it won't happen, won't happen, won't happen again
Biz Nasty
A bad habit worth breaking but it's taking time I don't know it don't matter it's going to happen,
Juice
going to happen again.
Biz Nasty
Hey, guys, it's Big Cat. When you're on a long road trip traveling between cities, anything can happen.
G
Flat tires, endless traffic.
Biz Nasty
Stopping to see a 50 foot wooden alligator. But I suspect everything actually happens for a reason. Like, is Grit week really a time to visit different training camps?
G
Or is it just an excuse to
Biz Nasty
check out different places to get a Reese's? And when we stop to fuel up, or are we really stopping to refuel on a recess? After countless miles thinking about chocolate and peanut butter, it all starts to make sense that everything happens for a Reese's.
