We are smack dab in the middle of the month of July, which kind of makes me sick. Post July 4th, it almost feels like summer's over a little bit. People really jump down my throat when I say that. But whoever tweeted out it was legit. The next Johnny Knoxville movie. That made me laugh because the guy was. Fuck, he was 17ft in the air, upside down after, and it looked like he got away from him. Now, I'll say this, he was 65. So the guy's got 22 years on me. I'm getting away from that thing 1,000 times out of 1,000 times. People chirp my ankles, my legs. I think you're juking that by 1,000%.

But all these sports franchises, they're just going up and up over 9 billion is.

I think it goes back to like AI. As crazy as that sounds, I think that people. I think.

I don't know. I. This one wasn't bad. And I'm usually. Four hours is usually my max. I do that quite to like Tampa, just past Tampa for the kids lacrosse. But yeah, this five hour, I don't know, like it was in New Jersey. G knew the road that we took, it was like through the mountain. Not mountains, but hills. It was like cool scenery. So. And there was no traffic, which was huge. If there was traffic, I would have lost my mind.

I went, I went Scottsdale to Salt Lake. Salt Lake to, To Jackson. Was obviously in Jackson a while. I always love driving through the park and I always go to Bozeman, so. Drove through the park, avoided getting killed by a bison. I always like to stop along the way. There's a few like, rivers in there. Well, there's a lot of rivers. And I just get out and just like jump in and like. It's kind of refreshing. It kind of wakes you up mid drive. You know, it's, it's surprisingly for this time of year, there wasn't that much traffic in Yellowstone. Maybe it was because of the pocket that I was in, but got past there, stopped in Bozeman. Bozeman's a fun town. Like it's, it's a beautiful little downtown strip, great restaurants. Stopped there for a night. And then where'd we go after that? We stopped it. Oh, then I went to Cordelane. Ended up going to the Gretzky Hockey School for the, for the Friday boys. I, I like. I was like legit playing in the game against the, the, the. The second age group. And then the kids that were. There was a few that were up to the age of 16. I was having a hard time keeping up.

I mean, even if they don't have skill, even if they don't have hockey, I.

So Derek Ryan, who I believe just retired, he played for the Oilers. His kid was out there, who was probably the best kid. He was out there juking. Like, I got dangled a few times where they put me on rollerblades. And like, all the parents are watching, and I'm like, oh, yeah.

Like, just like, I'm not trying.

Yeah, no, I was legit trying. So we didn't win a game for both sessions. I hopped on you full gear? No, I just did skates and gloves. I took a few. A couple of the kids, you know, how you think that they're gonna. They're gonna. The puck back and they're gonna see I'm in the lane and not shoot. Nah. Right off the shins.

But then on from there, I ended up stopping in Seattle for. For a couple nights, which, you know, not your typical city that I would go to, but the weather there is stunning. Kind of a weird city layout. Like, there's too much, like, industrial that you always see regardless of when you're looking, like, at the ocean part, I know you're on the inlet, but. But nonetheless, beautiful weather. Went to a couple incredible restaurants there, and then finally made the trek. So overall, a great two weeks and very excited to be back in Vancouver and then heading to Victoria. And then we got our boy Jeff Jacobson's birthday party on the 23rd.

So fired up staying on Old Hickory Lake like 20 minutes outside of Nashville. Gonna rent a boat one day. I heard there's this, you know, big sandbar where everyone goes drinks and parties. So it should be a blast playing Hermitage as well. I got two rounds there. Two separate 18s. Playing both of those golf game is just in the absolute tubes right now. It is horrible. Irons dialed, putting dialed. Just can't figure out the tee box. I just, I've. I've created this insane slice that I just can't fix. I got three swing coaches trying to help me. Everyone says they can fix it in 20 minutes and they work with and they're like, yikes, this kid needs a lot of work. So hopefully I can figure that out for the, for the golf trip. Know there's going to be some money matches there, but I'm so fired up and it's. It's just so crazy. You know, I came into Chiclets as a young 23 year old kid. Now I'm getting married. I'm 33, going on my bachelor party this week. So it's. It's been a crazy ride. Pinky's up and. Yeah, I just, I can't wait to get to Nashville and see all the boys and I mean, this week. Noah Kahan. Noah Khan. It was the best show of my life. It was an unbelievable concert at Fenway Park. He got nominated to like the Music hall of Fame at fenway Park. Only four people. Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Zach Brown Band, and now Noah Kahan. It was unbelievable. He showed up four consecutive shows. Insane. But I bought fake tickets. And this. I don't know how this always happens to me. I bought these tickets for Alana for Valentine's Day. So in February, I got these right away. They sent me the tickets. I know, like, we. I'm. I'm kind of the guy that always handles the tickets on the Chiclets trip. That. That doesn't usually happen. They don't usually send you the tickets six months in advance. Usually a week before, sometimes 24 hours

before he does it. One o' clock day of the concert.

Yeah. Also, I didn't know that he had this, like, ban on secondary markets reselling the tickets. So as we approach the concert, I start seeing on TikTok and Instagram all these people getting rejected outside the show, and they're not allowed in. They have, like, real tickets, but it's the barcodes all up. So I'm looking at these tickets and I'm like, I. I tweet out. I'm like, I think I bought fake tickets. Chiclets fans start DMing me screenshots of their tickets. I'm like, holy. These are completely different tickets. Like, these.

Disgusted with you, by the way. We'll talk to him in a bit.

So I call my friend who works at Fenway park, and I'm like, hey, like, is this ticket real or not? He calls me back. He's like, no, it. It is not. That is not a real ticket. So I end up buying two more tickets because this is now 20 less than 24 hours before the show. So I end up buying two more seats in the same section. So I want to be like, all right, maybe if they look alike, you know, maybe they are the same seats. Completely different tickets. Like, these are a row apart. Different barcodes, different looking.

So where you bought it online, though?

Online? I used a pretty reputable site and a very, very reputable site. And then I call the site and I'm like, hey, like, these are fake tickets. They're like, no, they're not. These are real. I send them the screenshot of the real ticket I bought and then the fake. The other fake one. They admitted. They're like, yeah, that there's no way that.

So did they reimburse you?

So I. About an hour before the show, they send me two more tickets. So now I went from having zero tickets to four tickets. So I got to bring two of my buddies for free. So it ended up Being an un.

That's nice that they. They ended up bucking up and taking responsibility. So now we're in the. So the backstory is that I want to say, after the last time he played Fenway, which was summer 2024, I didn't go. My dad had tickets. I'd never heard or listened to him, and I wasn't there. And then all of a sudden, everyone like, this concert's incredible. I started listening. I'm a super fan. I love the guy's music, right? So I'm like, I'm going this year. Well, in the meantime, he somehow hears that we were talking about him and DMs biz. Biz sends the DM over to us. I'm like, holy shit. Biz is mentioning let's play golf. Hey, big fan of the show. Not the biggest hockey guy, but you guys are hilarious. Blah, blah. I'm like, this is unreal. I show my wife. I said, we might end up playing golf with Noah Kahan. I might get tickets through this guy. I don't know what we're going to be at this.

We couldn't figure that out. But I'll get to the concert now. Incredible rock star. Unreal. Fenway Park. He's from Vermont. I think his parents went to school in Boston. You could tell the best part of the show, he was so appreciative, this guy.

Sense, like, how grateful he is for the life he has, right? And the music. So I'm with Brie, and I played golf with Ned earlier that day. Now I get to the golf course and I hear Ned on the phone. He's talking to his wife. Hey, babe, they're going down the Cape. Will you pick up a bunch of High Noons? I'm gonna drive down after the round. I'll see you down the Cape. She is the kids. I said, ned, we gotta go to this concert tonight. He said, ashley went on Wednesday night. I said, well, we gotta go. He said, I have Bree text her. So he. She texts her. She says, okay, I'm in. They cancel their plans to the Cape. I'm looking at Ned's car still outside my house right now, which is hilarious. This was Friday night, so. So we go to the show. A bunch of friends are in there. We're in there at Loco before with Shazzy. My wife and I take a little bit nibble of a chocolate bar, then a couple nibbles of a gummy bear. And I'm sitting there with Ned and my wife and his wife. And I felt this joy overcome me. And I'm just so happy. And the sun's setting and I love the music. And Fenway Parks might not be my favorite place on Earth. And I'm just like, life is good. Well, then I immediately drop my phone. You know, I fumble. Fuck my phone. I drop my phone. I pick my phone up, my phone's broken. The Screen is completely green. It's going. It's black. It's then going to white. I start panicking. I'm like, all right, I. I can't do the Verizon Apple store thing before this trip. I have to get all this stuff done. Ned grabbed me by the shoulder. He said, wit, let's just enjoy each other. Let's enjoy the set. I said, you're so. You're so goddamn correct. I put it in my pocket. I didn't even reach for it. I might have reached for it once. And I'm like, no, no, it's broken, buddy. I was sitting there, maybe it was, being a little bit high, a little bit drunk, being with my wife. We were. We were singing, and I knew every word to some of these songs. I'm talking, arm around her. She's got her arm. She's rubbing my butt, giving her kisses on the cheek. I'm like, this is life right now. And no way. So listen, I did. I, I. No, no, no. There's not a fourth on the way, unfortunately. By the time we got home and we cooked up some Angela pasta, there was no sex to be had. There was no sex to be had, but there was eating.

And then a guy came up to and shoved him, and he had to shove him back. And I'm like, just fix my phone, please. But I didn't yell it, but in my brain I'm screaming it. You must have been losing. Losing my mind. Losing my mind. And then the guy at Apple, who is a great guy, well, then an attractive woman comes and needs his help, and he is just wheeling and dealing. And I'm like, buddy, I get. I actually went up. I said, one sec. Excuse me, miss. I said, I wish. I said, I get, like, what you're doing here. Like, I'd be doing the same thing, like, if the roles were reversed. But I need your help so bad. He goes, buddy. He goes, buddy, just give me a couple more minutes on this one. He got her number. They literally went back and said, hey, listen, we got, we got an offer sheet coming and we know it's significant. We're going to give you one last opportunity to throw an eight year deal at what would be a reasonable number, which was 15.

And keep in mind, it might not have been eight. It might have been. They might have still wanted five, but either way doesn't matter. I know.

I think that he would have taken eight, which would have benefited Anaheim at the fact that if he were to sign eight times 15, three years into that contract, Leo Carlson would be making 11% of the team's cap. That is a deal.

The ups and downs, too, are wild because you went over there, you're playing with Eric, and then there's years of like, like, you know, not success. Then you guys get really good, and then the playoff, you know, failures, and then all of a sudden, it finally comes to fruition this year. But what's crazy to me is how long you've played. Like, you have over 1400 games now, 181 playoff games. How do you feel? Do you still feel good? Like, are, Are. Are you even one of those guys that's like, fuck, I'm getting older, or you still feel like, excellent in the off season and stuff like that?

No, I, I'm.

I'm hurting. I mean, I, I feel. I feel fine at times, but there's, there's definitely times where, you know, you're. You're like, what. What am I doing here? Barely wake up for basically getting to the bus of the game. And, you know, it's. There are times and moments for sure, and, and, you know, like I said, you get kids in the picture that those are hard too. You know, the longer you go, the more, you know, you're cutting up, cutting out time with them.

But. But for the most part, man, my body feels great. My mind, I'm having so much fun. I mean, this team is incredible. Like, that's the biggest thing right now is like, like I said, I have been playing so long, but I've been like Raleigh's home. Like, it's been home and, and now I, I'm. My kids call it home. I have 11 year old that's literally only lived in Raleigh. You know, it's like, so they call it home, I call it home. And I get to play on an unbelievable team with a chance to win every year. Like, you can't write that up any better. Like, I know I grinded through some years, but I like, like it, it, like it is. You can't, you can't picture it at the end any better. For myself and I've been just really having so much fun with these guys and, and, and enjoying the grind. I mean it's, it, it is a grind, but it's so much fun and, and I appreciate it. Embracing the suck, as your brother Mark used to say when I played with him all time. But even for you, even going back, like you got to play with Eric and Jared, like, how cool was that? Like, obviously he's, he's one of the brothers not talked about as much as you guys, but like, how much does he mean to you in, you know, to be able to play those two games with him in the NHL?

Yeah, that was cool moment. You know, I thank Jimmy Rutherford for that. Obviously pulling Jay up and, and being able to have that opportunity to, to play with two bros. And, and honestly, I think Mark would have been in that lineup if Eric didn't hit him too hard a couple months before that. But it was, you know, he was in the building, which was wild, you know, so all four of us, Whoa, whoa.

He didn't play because he was out

with an injury due to maybe that might have happened. But it, it was, it was touchy subject for a while, but for the most part we had all four guys and, and brothers in one building. Incredible moment, obviously. And to play with the little bro and have an opportunity to, you know, grind it out with him for a couple games and it, it was, it was really cool moment. You know, those were tough years and that was a highlight for sure. You know, on top of playing with Eric and, and you know, being part of his family and his kids and, and having one of my own during that time and all that stuff. But the little bro coming up too was really, really cool. I mean, that's actually, you know, I don't have put much of it on the walls, but the one picture I do like is, you know, us three in a row. How much more gratifying is it that the fact that you basically, like, you stuck through it and, and built what you guys built from the ground up. And I guess going to the beginning of it, people were surprised at the fact you moved on from Pittsburgh. Was playing with Eric, like a majority of the factor of you deciding to go there or was it more of like. No, I think I, I can maybe take on a little bit more responsibility and not play third fiddle if, if that's.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, there was a little bit of that. For the most part. It was, it was, it was a wild time. You know, it basically Pittsburgh at the time offered me 10 year deal and I was like, well, and my agent's like, take it, take it. You take it. Let's just take. Just take the deal and we'll. Please, listen to me, listen to me. Jordan and I. And you know, Eric's like, yeah, you signed that. And like, he's like, we might not ever play with each other, you know, and, and you know, kind of a. Kind of a dwe move, to be honest. But it, you know, it just like, it just planted a seed. And honestly, it was like rolling into my wedding and I remember looking at my. My future wife. I got, I guess at the time I was like, you know, you figure out these next few days and I'll figure out the rest of our lives here. Like, it was like it was both through some crazy times. So I said no. I still had a year left, so I wasn't sure what they were going to do. We magically had our wedding on. On draft night. And, and sure enough, right in the middle, right in the middle of the entrees, I have a half a pierogi in my mouth and my agent comes running over and shout out Pittsburgh. Yeah, yeah, and tarot trip. Yeah. And. And I, you know, you gotta trade the Carolina Hurricanes. And yeah, I was like, what? And I like spit it out, basically. And you know, you kind of hear the rest of the room, you know, kind of get hushed and. But you know, that so much emotion, like, obviously your wedding day is incredible day. And then I'm sitting there, you know, my stomach, you know, in my throat, looking in the far corner there, and I see, you know, eight to ten guys from Pittsburgh that are, oh, yeah, they're there for my wedding, you know, and so I, so I was, you know, I get out there, I'm half ball and like, you know, hugging everyone. But on top of that, we had an Incredible night. Not too often you get traded, but also get to hang with your boys and, and, you know, enjoy an evening knowing that, you know, we had a couple more weddings ahead. We had, you know, Flower and, and Brooks Orbit got married that summer. So we had a couple more parties. So it was good, but crazy story, crazy time. But, you know, like, to answer your question, yeah, it was to play with Eric. That was the biggest thing. And, you know, to play with your brother in the NHL, I mean, how can you. How, like, how can you pass that up? Even the opportunity, too. So. I was so excited to get down to Carolina, man. I was. I was. I was going to change the whole thing. Like, we're going to turn this thing around. And I had all this ambition and it. It just went. It went to. I mean, for the most part, it was. It was no good. But so many great, great memories, you know, with the brother and, and all those things, like I said before, and. But yeah, it was. It was crazy times.

[Paul Bissonnette]

Yeah. I was going to say, you see Orbs and Flower leaving at like 2am and they got the Toaster and the. And the blender. They're like, all right, I won't see him in camp anyway.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Starts doing.

Yeah, your quote after. It was incredible. And it for sure wasn't like a shot at anyone. But with how the league is now, you just mentioned, like, so many guys jump ship. And for a guy who, his first six years in the league never missed playoffs, you go down in seven straight years, you miss and you stuck it out. You just mentioned that. But, like, was there ever a moment in those seven years, maybe the fifth year, the sixth year, where you're like, like. Or did you see by the end of that kind of run of no playoffs, like, all right, something's coming here. And like, the next year it's going to come or the next year. You know what I'm saying?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, no, and you're exactly right. I mean, that comment was. It was an emotional one, but it

[Ryan G]

was not like, yeah, everyone knew that. It's just how the league is now.

[Jordan Staal]

It just like it is. That's what it seems like everyone wants a quick fix and a quick shot at it, which I get. But like, like, you're exactly right. What, What I went through just. It gives me chills. Right. Just thinking about, like the, the. The whole journey was. Was incredible. I mean, there was ups and downs or it's life, right? I mean, there's ups and downs in life all in everyone's lives. And I Learned so much about myself, about my teammates, my brothers, my, My own character, like, and then, you know, to, to grind through that stuff all those years was, was tough. And then honestly, like I said, if there was a moment, yeah, it was when they traded Eric. I was like, my goodness, like, I came here to play with them, and I know they're trading them. So, like, I, I, I definitely sat down that summer. I was like, what am I doing? Like, I'm in my prime. We're struggling. We don't really see a light for the most part. We're not spending to the cap. We're not trying to get better. You know, we just traded my, our arguably, I think, our best player at the time. And, you know, it was like. So, yeah, there was questions there, there was questions all throughout that. I mean, why, why wouldn't you, right? I mean, I wanted to win so bad. I mean, you get that taste, and all you can think about is how you want to win again. And, you know, but it just, it just, to me, I, I was, I, I was committed to Carolina. And I've seen so many times where guys could bolt out and grass isn't always green on the other side. Sometimes it goes south and it just doesn't work. And, and I, and I loved Raleigh. I love the opportunity we had there. And I wanted to build something and I wanted to be a part of it. And it, it, it was slow, you know, it was funny, actually. I mean, I, they traded Eric, that's at the end of the year. And I, I met with Ron Francis, you know, obviously the guy that traded him, but he's like, he's like, you know, blah, blah, like, and I heard this for years, me and Eric, like, this guy's gonna be good.

Like, we're, you know, we're, we're building something here, you know, and then we get in the summer, and he's like, no, I know. Trade Eric's tough, blah, blah. He's like, but this, we, we got this Sebastian Ajo kid. Like, he's, he's gonna be good. Like, blah, blah. I'm like that. I'm like, yeah, at the time.

I've heard this.

[Jordan Staal]

I've heard this before. I've heard this 100 times. Like, no way. Like, like, I've had enough of your crap. Like, this is so. I'm like, all right, whatever. I'm gonna take another year. I'll work hard, and I'm gonna try to be the difference maker next year. And, and turned out that kid was Pretty good. And, and then, you know, Jacob Slavin shows up and you know, and, and, and all those guys obviously started rolling in. We started building something cool. And obviously with Tom taking over, he started pushing the envelope of getting better and, and, and spending the cap and creating the team. And then you have Rod. I mean, what more can you say about that guy? I mean, once he took the reins behind the bench, things changed dramatically. Our competitiveness, the way we play, our aggressiveness, the details. And then just the day to day consistent grind that he brings. All that kind of mixed in together and it was just, it was a gravitational pull from everyone. Everyone that came in that room was just like, I feel something here. And you hear about even guys that would have to leave and you know, they would, they would shoot a text to the group which you don't see a whole lot, I don't think. And they're like, man, you guys have something special. You know, it's like really fun to be a part of and, and a bunch of guys that do that and, and I felt it too. So I, I, I believed in it. I loved what we were doing, the way we, direction we're going. And then, yeah, like you said, we just kept getting kicked in the balls, you know, one after the other, you know, year after year or having a good team, get a couple injuries, you know, run into whatever. Just didn't click. It didn't click. You know, like, keep telling the media, you know, it's, it's a matter of just giving yourself a chance. I mean, we have a great team. You know, you got to make playoffs. It's hard to make playoffs. It's not easy. And you just got to keep giving yourself a chance and you know, you hope, hope it clicks, you stay healthy and you, and you play the way you want to play. And, and this year it did, it worked. And 17 years, man, it's just like, it's crazy. And you know, we, we, it was, it was a wild time. Obviously not 17 in Raleigh, but incredible ride building something so amazing and, and to see all love to watch them raise that cup was there was, that was the ultimate goal and it was just so amazing.

[Paul Bissonnette]

At what year would you say you started to like, not only hear that like, oh, you guys got something special brewing here. Could you pinpoint an exact time? And just looking at the like the timeline here, Rod had been assistant coach for two years before you got there. He was still assistant coach for about, I think five years after you gotten there. When you got there, were you like Maybe a little bit surprised given, like, his professionalism, his drive, his knowledge of the game that it maybe took so long for him to take over as head coach.

[Jordan Staal]

No, I, I, So Roddy was, as an assistant, he, he had respect for the head coach. He, he was doing his job. And I'm sure in the back of his mind, he's like, I think I can do this better. And, and I'm sure he mentioned that to Ronnie a few times, but over the years. But no, I think when it really started to click and, you know, started to go was obviously when, when Riley took over and, you know, we started pushing playoffs and, and making moves and, and climbing the standings consistently was probably those moments where, you know, guys coming in, out that were really appreciative of what we were doing and how we're doing it and having fun with it. We had a blast, and we still do. And I think, think that was probably the time probably basically when Ry took over and we started going. But, you know, for the most part, Roddy, Roddy had a lot of respect for any coach that was in there. I know he was, he was pretty close. I, I, I think I could tell you the story. It was, you know, with Bill Peters, I think was our last head coach before he went and took over. But I remember sitting on the, on standing on the ice with him, talking to him, and he was like, I think I'm done. I'm like, roddy, you can't leave. You can't leave. I'm like, I'm like, years.

We need you.

He needs you. I said, you, because I'm gonna get

a head coach job somewhere else if you leave. Like, he was just, like, he was over the whole thing, and I was like, I'm like, we'll talk, like. And that, that was the summer that he ended up taking it over. You know, we, we figured it out that, you know, we found a way to get him to where he needed to be and where he, he should have been for all along. But, like, even he can't leave. Like, like, what am I gonna do? Like, I, like, like, I was like, basically on my knees, like, you can't, you can't leave. So. And, you know, we, we found a way, and man, once he took over, what an incredible ride from there too. And just, it was just like a roller coaster. We're just going tick, tick, tick all the way up. And it was, it was really co.

[Ryan G]

That's what I was kind of curious about. So he comes in, you get in. He's been in the playoffs every year, which is now eight straight. But those years where you're coming up short, conference finals, second round, like a couple of those exit meetings, did it, did it turn? Not, not nasty, but almost like, what. What needs to happen here? Like, what are we missing? Because obviously you're so good every regular season, you can't get to the top. So there's definitely hard conversations that happened throughout that run the last eight years.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, no, yeah, there, there. There's a few. And you know, it. It's. It's just about getting better, right? I mean, you're just, you're. You're tweaking it, I think then, you know, you see a lot. A few teams here and there that, you know, they blow it up because they can't quite figure it out. But, like, my goodness, you make playoffs, you're. You're a great team. Like, you look at the. Like, I know. You know, Whit was a big Ottawa Centers fan, served this round, like, but they were, They're a legit.

[Paul Bissonnette]

You know, they were good, man.

[Ryan G]

They were good.

[Jordan Staal]

They're legit team. They are. And they, they, they had, they have great pieces and, you know, you, you want to tweak it a little bit or whatever it is. Like, you, you're. And you think any player, any team that's, you know, making playoffs, there's no question, like, anytime I've ever made playoffs, like, I have aspirations, we're going to win this thing. Like, why? Like, why not? Why. Why not us? And you know, we have a great spot. So, like, I, I think, like, there is. There is something said about, you know, of, of. Of just. Just tweaking. I mean, you don't want to. You. You feel like you have a great core and you have the right, right mix, but you, you just need to just. Just continually try to get better. And that's just like day at a time. It's. It's a corny thing that, you know, Bill, our strength guy, says you got to go one and. Oh, and it's just about trying to get better every day and, and that's just tweaking with players, too, and stuff like that. So that a few hard conversations about how we can get better and, and finding ways to. To. To just get us over the hump and. And I think the healthy thing was a big thing, too. I think there was some years, man, we had some great squads, and it just, you know, it doesn't take much. I mean, you know, I mean, you could, you can go down the line even this playoffs and the teams we played, they had a couple injuries, and it's hard. It's hard. It's just hard. So, you know, we were. We were very fortunate and blessed to stay healthy, which is big.

[Paul Bissonnette]

And.

But also, you know, we. We brought in some players that are incredible. I mean, incredible additions on top of everyone else just executing that much better. And, you know, we found a way to pull it up.

One of the biggest tweaks you guys made was getting ranting and a couple years ago, and then, you know, he essentially says he doesn't want to be there. What was the whole thought process with you? I mean, obviously, you're the leader in that room. Like, what was the whole process? The chatter with the boys and everything there. It must have been crazy times, right? You get one of the biggest guys.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, that was. That was wild time. That was. I remember telling the guys after it was all said and done, like, that was the weirdest, like, few.

[Ryan G]

It was weird for fans, let alone. It was so weird, you guys.

[Jordan Staal]

Well, I mean. And I get it. And I felt bad for Rance, too. Like, he, you know, he wasn't really expecting to get traded, and, you know, he was. He was hoping to sign Colorado, whatever it was, and obviously, like, he has his own story, so it is what it is. So we have, like, a star player here sitting beside me on my right, and he's not sure what's going on. He's trying to play his best. He's struggling out there. He's frustrated. And, like, Roddy's kind of tiptoeing around because, like, we want to sign him. You know, it's like an end.

[Ryan G]

I don't want to carve him. Yeah.

[Jordan Staal]

And he's like, yeah, but he's not really doing kind of what we liked him to do, and. But also, like, he's so talented. And you're like, well, I get it. Like, you know, he can make plays. And you're like, okay, we'll figure that out. But, like, we also need to know he's going to be here. And it's like, it was the weirdest time. And even for me, I was like, I didn't know what to say to him for the most part. And it's like, it's tough. It was weird. So. And then, yeah, honestly, we were obviously just average the time when he was playing and we were winning, losing games. We knew we had a great squad. And then, you know, we, like. I remember telling talking to Marty, and I was just like, I. We just need this deadline to be done. Whether he stays or not, I don't care. Once that deadline's done, we can. We can finally, finally just go, like. And then we literally, you know, he obviously left. And then I think we won 10 straight right after. Right after the deadline, like, we were just busting, like, we're like, finally we just, like, just do what we need to do and play the way we want to play, and whoever we have, let's just go. And we did. And. And, yeah, it was. It was a weird time, though. It was one of the weirder, you know, moments in. In. In my whole career. Really.

[Ryan G]

Yeah. That's like. Well, we had Tom Dundon on who. What an electric guy, right? Like, he.

He speaks his mind. Like, with us, I couldn't believe how good. I actually had a couple people reach out, like, oh, that guy's great. But when he came in and you mentioned already spent into the cap, like, to have a guy who wants to win but also is kind of demanding of winning, that maybe be intimidating to some guys, but you must have loved it. Like, all right, now we have, like, an owner who's like, wake the up here, guys.

[Jordan Staal]

You're exactly right. I mean, that was. That was the big thing, too, is like, I thought, you know, with me and Eric and a couple pieces we had, I was like, man, we can be a good squad. And we just never really. We're just kind of hoping, you know, we were hoping that we were going to be good enough. And, you know, this. This player that they were talking about, he's really going to be panning out, and you're like, okay. And then you start the season, you're like, I don't know. And then it's just like. And that's all it takes. The game is so close. Like, this league is so incredibly close. So, you know, you get on a couple streaks down the other way, and then you're out. Like, you know, whether you're three points out or whatever, but you're out. So, you know, when Tom took over, it would have been much more incredible if Eric was still around. But yeah, man, he. He pushed the envelope. I remember sitting him with him right, right off the bat, and he was like, all right, look, what do we got? What are we doing here? And he was just picking my brain. He's picking everyone's brain. And, And. And I mean, the amount of data that guy, like, shoves into his brain and spits out, like, amazing stuff. He's. He's incredible. He. I don't Understand how. Where he gets the time line and how he does it all. But. But. But a guy that wanted to win, he. That was it. It was like you could see it and that's. I mean, it was so, so such a breath of fresh air. And he was willing to spend on the players to. To get the right players and. And keep moving and try to push any bit buttons that would get better. And. And he was. Like I said, it was the perfect storm between Roddy taking over and Tom pushing that, that, you know, we just started to build something really cool.

[Paul Bissonnette]

If you're saying that about his numbers and analytics and stuff like that, that. What do you make of Tulski?

[Keith Yandel]

Yeah, Tulski is his favorite person in the world.

[Jordan Staal]

He's a fan of Tulsi, indirectly. So. I mean, the guy's. He's. He's a mastermind back there.

[Paul Bissonnette]

I heard you guys don't let him near the wives lounge.

Yeah. Too handsome.

Oh, yeah. No, yeah. You keep him away from the girls. I mean, he. He's a chick magnet for sure, but he. He's. He's incredible. Obviously, he's done a great job. You know, he. He. He plays the part, but he, you know, you start getting to know him and a lot of. Of a lot of conversations. A great dude that, again, wants to win and. And just wants to be a part of something special. And he. He's. He's played his part incredibly well, and he's. He's. He's been. He's done an amazing job for. For our group.

Did you ever ask him the backstory to, like, what happened with Stankhoven? Like, are you. Are you on that type of level with him? When, like, Like, I, I believe the story goes that one of the guys, one of the scouts said to him, like, this guy is. He's a. He's a her hurricane. Like, I don't know how else to describe it. He's a hurricane. So, like, did he already have that kind of teed up in case it didn't work out, or were they scrambling after they made this trade to figure out, oh, how do we. How do we get out of this?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, I think the story you did kind of spill it out for us because obviously it was a, you know, obviously a bit of a whoopsie on their part. And, you know, I mean, it could be in the long run, it could have worked out better for us or any better for us, but, you know, it. It was. It was nice of Randon. I think there was, you know, four or Five teams that he was willing to sign with, I think. So he gave us an opportunity to kind of flip them. And, and so that was very. He didn't have to do that. Could have said, sorry, I'm just gonna.

[Ryan G]

Yeah, that's true. If he was just like, oh no, I'm playing this out.

[Jordan Staal]

Like, we were like, all right, well we're gonna try to win with you and then we'll see what happens. But you know, you know, it's nice of him and, and then yes, obviously Stanks was a, was a, a nice addition. I mean, I'm obviously a nice, amazing addition, but like, I don't think he was just. I don't think they wanted to give him up. But you know, for a guy like R, you have to. And he was a good young player and I remember actually getting a few texts from a few guys that played in the west. And, and you know, I obviously didn't play against Stanks a ton, but they're like, oh, you got a good player there. And I was like, I, I didn't. I. Well he jumped them online right away. And I like, yep, he is good. Like, he's legit. And, and he only kept getting better and, and you're exactly right. He's like KAC through and through. Like his competitiveness, his drive and his day to day and how he competes and, and and tries to get better every day is he's up there with the greats on our team. So. And just, just a solid dude, man. Just a, just a good dude that that was. Wants to compete and that's. Those are the guys we love.

[Keith Yandel]

For a guy that won so early in your career and then obviously you don't win again till this year. Like, were there times, you know, going into the summertime be like, I might not play next year, this might be it. And then if so and then this year after winning, is it like, okay, I got even more years now. Like it, it lit even more of a fire. Are you kind of like, okay, I got maybe one or two more?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, well, I mean this is how my brain works, I guess at times. But you know, I've, I've always been hard on myself and probably too hard in regards to maybe me.

[Ryan G]

I remember you being very hard on yourself. Ye.

[Jordan Staal]

And as a I. And I've gotten better that with that over the years. But I truly, when I signed that 10 year deal, I was like, I just, I, I don't want to get bought out. Like, I, I was like, I was like, I want to Play this to the end and I would be happy. I mean, I would, I mean that's incredible. Like, I mean who, who can, you know. So that was like, literally my goal is, especially through the dark years, it was like, like, is this guy any good? Like, and I was like, I think I'm good. I, you know, it was like random, but like, and you know, it's just like I didn't want to get bought out. I wanted to keep competing and, and play, play to my, what I committed to, you know, my commitment to that deal and with the team and what we were doing and, and that's what I wanted to do. And then, and I started rolling at the end of that, of that. And you know, to be honest, I, I was kind of right after that 10 year deal is I was like, I was almost a one year at a time. I'm like, I didn't know what they wanted either. I was like, I'll play for anything right now. I'm so excited to get back in there and, and play for the season, group with these guys and, and try to win. So yeah, we snuck in a, a four year deal and I was like, all right, I'll just, just start with one and you know, it, it goes by quick, man. Like, it's like, it's crazy that I'm at the end of it again and you know, having a year, I, I had, you know, one year left is, and my mental state is, I mean I, I, I gotta go work out here at some point in the summer. You know, I gotta walk, I go use my brother's gym because I'm too cheap to make a better one, so. And it's like, you know, he's already sleeping. I'm up at 6 and getting there early and, and I'm dreading it. But I'm also just excited for the next year. So I gotta do it, you know, it's gotta be done and, but how much longer am I gonna do that? I don't know. And I, I, I mean I'm, I am exhausted with it. Um, what, what I have told the guys recently, the worst part about, you know, being out this beautiful lake, it's about an hour drive, hour and a bit just to get on ice, right? So.

Yeah, it's a lot, It's a lot. A longest drive, it's kind of pain in the butt especially. I work out and then, you know, I'm changing and I'm going in the car. You sit in the car, your hips are, you know, you, you by the time you get out of the car, you know, already bent over, like, oh, crap. And then you get on the ice and you just have to skate around for 30 minutes where you can actually feel like you can bend legs. And then you finally get there and you're like. Then you just bag yourself and you get off the ice and go. So it sucks. And it's not that. Not that enjoyable, but it has to be done, you know, So I would do it, but this stuff last. Last summer, last few summers. Eric's oldest. Oldest boys are, you know, they're getting older and they're like, well, we want. We need to skate. Like, we, you know, we're trying to get better, blah, blah. And like, all right, like, come skate with me. Like. And Eric's like, I'll run the practice. I'm like, all right, so we know. And then next thing you know, next thing you know, I have. I have my daughter. I have my little guy. And it's like I'm sitting in this room and it's like, you know, it's Parker, Levi, Finley, and then Henry, my son, and. And Lila and Abigail and, you know, Jack, and they're all tying their sk. Getting out there as a. Like, in one room. And like, I'm like, it's incredible. Like, I, like, it's so cool. And I. I granted, I didn't get as much work probably as I should have get done out there, but for the most part, I got what I needed, you know?

And you got memories.

And. And sharing the game.

I mean, it's like, it's. It's in our blood, in the soul family. And, man, the next generation are just. I'm. I'm excited to literally go up. So, yeah, he's right in the mix. And. And Eric's. Eric's basically coaching them or assistant coach there and, and helping out. So it's. It's fun. Fun to be a part of, for sure.

I have heard that line, like, multiple, multiple, multiple times from a lot of different people. So I will do as you said, Randy Annz. I'll try to play as long as I can and, And. And I'll enjoy it. You mentioned the trainer and his influence on the team briefly. We heard the backstory of the cinder block and it weighing 35 pounds that you guys were made aware of. But you mentioned he's a character too. Like, what, like, what about him is, like, so inspiring or, you know, what makes him an unbelievable trainer and maybe more so than other ones around the league.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah. Bailey, I don't know if you heard many stories. I mean, I won't start spewing them all out, but he, He's. He's a Jersey guy through and through, whatever that means to you guys. But a lot of other people, he's. He's a character for sure. And, and man, he. He. He does a great job of. Of bringing the guys together. I mean, we. We do like, a stretch before, you know, every practice, and, you know, you think team stretch, and most guys, literally, most guys that come in right away, they're like, oh, my goodness. Like, we do junior shit. You know, like, you're like, this is stupid. And then, you know, you. You start doing it, and this guys. I mean, Bill is just such an idiot. And, and just it. It literally brings us together and it is so good and, and so funny and. But also, like, man, the guy works, man, and he wants to get better. It's just all.

Basically, what we've built, I think, in Carolina is like, we're. We're gonna work, but we're gonna have fun doing it. And it's. It's. And that's it. Like. And he's the epitome of that. He. He couldn't. You know, I don't think he have a job anywhere else. He needs to be with the guys, like 20 guys in the room chirping because, like, I think he would have got HR called. But, like, he's an incredible dude and, But a hard worker and. And it's just another guy that you can just gravitate to and, and really just jump on board and, you know, he. He's helped me a ton. Not only just like the bringing the team together, but just me personally with the workouts in the summer, keeping my body right. He's done an incredible job. And yeah, Billy, he's. He's. He's an unbelievable addition for, for our team.

I don't know if you yet there probably 21 liners that. I mean, you probably wouldn't be able to play half the stuff now, but yeah, he's. He's good.

[Ryan G]

Like, I remember. So I was. I was struggling in Anaheim and. And gets. He grabbed me one day and he was just kind of talking to me and I'm wondering for you, like, if Ajo's getting riled up. You know, he. You see him get angry or Spec is going through a dry spell. Are you somebody that's kind of taking guys aside one on one once in a while and helping them through good time or tough times or really pumping them up during. During great times, if you know what I mean. Like, you talking to guys individually.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, there's. There's certain players for sure. You know, I've had conversations with. I would say even just last year, I bet she, you know, he. He didn't struggle to start the year, but, I mean, actually pretty incredible. Just stepped right into Cinnamon's job and. And just tried to figure it out. And he did. You know, it. It was slower probably than he'd like for at the start, so he was frustrated. I'm like, man, you're doing fine. Like, you know, they'll let you grab a little things, you know, sweating. Had some ups and downs last year. So you grab fish. Yeah, don't worry about fish. Man. That guy is just like, okay. Oh, man, he, like, he gets.

[Ryan G]

He gets pissed off out there.

[Jordan Staal]

Yes. And I love that. And I think it's good I let. Let him do that. That's all good. But he's so Dialed. He's got. He's. He's a smart. He's so smart. And. And I don't worry about him ever. I don't worry about Slavo, Marty. I don't worry about those guys.

And, and, you know, and they do a great job of taking care of everyone else too. So. Yeah, there's times where there, there's moments where you're really watching guys and, you know, there's some ups and downs and everyone has it. Right. It's just. No one's gonna play incredible for 82 and now 84 somehow. But like, you know, it's like.

No testing, though.

But no testing. Yeah. Great. So it's. It's. It's. It's fun to be a part of that. To. Different, obviously, than when I was with you. It. But just a. It's a cool thing to be to, yeah. Come alongside guys that are struggling or, you know, there's ups and downs and I've seen. I've seen so much. So, like, you know, I hope. I hope. I hope it resonates with the guys by. Grab them every now and then and, and, you know, from what I've seen, it seems to. Seems to work at times, but. But for the most part, you know, the guys we have in that room, that room, I don't worry about a whole lot of guys and just a lot of competitors, and that's. That's the way Roddy likes it.

So that means you're doing your job by not having the babysits that you're leading. But I was going to ask you. I know a lot of the credit and a lot of talk has gone to Bussy, but, you know, Freddy got you guys there, right? Like, he was unreal for you guys. He won you a couple series and just a guy that's battled injuries, battled, you know, shit in the media, and just. I was so happy for him. I got to know him at a skate one summer. Unbelievable guy. But, like, what did he mean to your group?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, first man, you're exactly right. Talk about, like, roller coaster. Ish. For sure. Especially in Carolina with some injuries, ups and downs and. And all those things in between and just alone in that playoff run, like, you know, obviously there. I'm sure there is media talk about who we're going to start this and that. You know, Busu is incredible. Freddie's been our backbone for so long. He's steady.

[Jordan Staal]

He's. He's been unbelievable. And you know, we, We. We went with him and my goodness like, he, he, I mean that all of us series, like, he, he far the best player in that whole series. And you know, you know, more or less that game, that series could have went seven at any moment. And he was a big reason why, you know, we got four straight there and, and, and, and so on and so forth right to the finals. I mean, you know, he gets, gets dinged up and, and, and can't play and truly though, if you guys, if he plays that out and you know, and plays, you know, plays the way he was doing the whole time, like, like he's a constant winner. Like, that's, that's, that's who I, I would see it as. And he was incredible. Our back one the whole time and you know, so to see him go out and not be able to pull our part at the end and it was a bummer for him. And you know, I'm sure he wanted to be in there so bad, but, but we wouldn't have been there without him. So he was a huge part of that win. And, and then obviously, you know, with Mr. Lemire going down and all, that's. All that emotion and, and, and, and, and you know, the way he carried himself through that all was incredible. And so it was, it had to go to him right away. And in my mind and, and was just so happy to see him raise that cup.

[Paul Bissonnette]

If you want to touch on Bussy, too, I mean, what, what a, what a pickup off of waivers to start the year. And he has that incredible start too. So just to have two guys help kick and, and, and get it done, that's psych. And like, were you guys, were you guys very confident when he was going in, in the finals? And I was going to ask you in particular because you mentioned like, you thought Freddy was supposed to be the Con Smythe guy, but you go against Vegas and you have the series. You did. And all of a sudden you win it. Like, what a fucking rip, man.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, I mean, that was, yeah, that was a wild ride. I mean, for me at the end. But Bus, I mean, he, when he, when he jumped in then like some of his, like, I mean, some of his practices and stuff, you're like, okay, I see it, I see it. And then, you know, you get him a game, though, man, he's like, he's this, he's so dialed and chill, but also like, he's big and like, just gets in the way. And then, you know, next thing you know, you know, we're, we're four, four, five. We're Five, four and a minute left and he comes across and just makes this massive save right at the end and you know we, we get this win and we're moving on and you know another win is like, and all of a sudden like you know, you know, five games straight just like you know, massive save again, you know, just, just at the end, you know and it's just like he is, he had this gamer feel you know, it's just, you could feel it like you know whatever the score was like he's going to feel it like he, he, he understands like that he's got to be this is the moment that he needs to step up for us and he, he just had that, that attitude and, and he made, he made some amazing saves right off the bat and, and then a crazy run for him. You know, NHL you know, records you know, coming in, starting and winning those games. It's so cool to see. And you talk to him, he's like, like you said he was apparently working Chipotle like five. It's, it's a wild story.

No, I, I, I wouldn't say probably a whole lot of guys you know, knew but, but once he jumped on board in that first game we're like oh we think we're gonna know this guy and just, just a, just an amazing dude to just chill you know, ready to work too and, and, and, and even keel and no no drama, just, just wants to go play goalie and, and make insanely awesome saves and that's, that was, that's, that's exactly what

we need for you personally from like a self motivating perspective obviously Stanley cup. But like were you like this might be your last chance at it and you all of a sudden go nuclear in, in the last series and I would imagine that was probably your guys toughest opponent I know Ottawa. I've heard you guys talk about how I know it was a sweep but that was tough. Vegas was kind of a different beast and quickly.

[Ryan G]

Sorry stallsy because this goes into that. Do you remember, do you remember Gary Roberts telling us that when we lost to Detroit about how you guys don't understand like no, you might. Do you remember that?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, no, and that's a great, that's a great story because I, I I talked about guys about that before, and I remember sitting there when. When Rob said that, I'm like, I. I don't. I don't believe that. Like, I know. I know how big this is. Like, I. I, like, I, like, I was like, let's go. Like, we need this now. Like, that's all I kept thinking about. So. But maybe some guys didn't. I. I don't know. That's. That's the way out my mind was going. So that speech maybe resonated with other guys that maybe need to hear that, but I. I didn't. I didn't want to say that with our group. I was like, I think everyone knew what was going on, what needed to be done, and. And literally, we watched all our games, so we didn't change anything. So it wasn't like there was a, you know, moment where I was like, man, what are we doing? It was like, no, we're just. We'll figure this out. We'll get it done. Like, we'll keep moving forward. And there wasn't really a crazy amount of hiccups in that finals. I mean, a wild series, don't get me wrong. But, like, you know, we were. We were heading the right direction. But, you know, I think that series was. I. I mean, I don't know. It was like. It felt like there were, like. I mean, God was behind me, and I was just moving forward, and I would, like, all I could think about, honestly. Biz was like, yeah, I went nuclear. But I was not thinking, this is my last shot. I was like, these guys need to win. Like, I was like. I was like. And that's, like, the care factor that we've talked about in our room and how it's grown over the years. And Roddy said that's. That's going to be our difference man anchor. You know, our. Our C5 is, you know, compete consistently, and then you care for each other and. And you. Then you have your culture, and. And that care was a big one for me, especially in that finals. Man, I was just like, all. All that kept pushing. My brain was like, these guys need to win. Like, they need. It has.

Has to happen.

[Jordan Staal]

Like, I'm like, it has to happen. Like. And I. I mean, you know, if I said, like, I have to win, maybe I wouldn't have played as well as I have. Like, all I could think of was how, like, I need to see Slavo with that thing. I need to see Aho with it, with it and all these guys, and that's what I kept running through my brain, you know, throughout that finals and, and obviously, you know, things were clicking and the puck was going in and I was feeling it and you know, it was, it was, it was an incredible ride and I would never have dreamed anything like that. I mean, I'm sure a lot of you guys think oh Jordan Spell is a heck of a player, blah, blah. But you know, for that to all click for me personally was, was an amazing, amazing moment I, I would never dream of, of. And it still really hasn't sunk in. I mean I'm sitting up in the lake, I'm trying to get it to sink in and it can't, I just can't get it figured out. But maybe it will one day.

I don't know.

[Jordan Staal]

Maybe it never will. I just always feel like a dream. But it was, it was really cool and. Yeah. What, what a ride.

[Paul Bissonnette]

Just one quick follow up. Is it hard in those circumstances for you to stay in the moment? Like I would like my biggest problem is like you know, when you're even when I was going for a caller cup and it's not even like a comparison here is you're just, just like you, you start. Sometimes your mind gets a little bit ahead of yourself. You're just like stay in the moment, stay in the moment. It's hard to do.

[Keith Yandel]

And did already winning help you with that? It must have, right?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, it, it, it helped for sure. Nah.

[Ryan G]

Three decades ago.

[Jordan Staal]

Honestly. I mean once you get into the mix was to be honest, like I always found even each series that, that run the, the first game is always hardest for me because you know, there's so many what ifs and you don't really know what this team's going to beat. Like you don't know what you're up against until you play that game. You get into the, into that first game, win or lose, you're like. And after every one of those game ones I'm like okay, like we can figure this team out and you know, we can win this series. You know, it's like so you know, and once you get in the series, you know to turn your mind off is really hard and I, I, I'm biz, I'm telling you by, by the end it was was, it was really, really hard cuz like we were that close. For me to like grab this cup was, was insane. So yeah, I was, I was up middle of night slot just trying to bury my brain and, and turn it off and it wasn't easy but just more, more excitement and and anxieties of just getting the game started. Like, basically the hardest part was just, like, once that puck dropped, I was like, final. Like, I was like, finally I can drink.

[Ryan G]

Just.

[Jordan Staal]

Just play and not have to think, really, and just play the game that I love and. And see what. See what we can do with these spells and try to win. Like, and then the game would be done, and I'd be like, all right. Like, and just, like, you're basically counting down the minutes until that next puck drop is. You finally feel free of just, like, going out and playing and not thinking. And so it. It's hard. It's. It's. It's exhausting. And that's. That's a big part of. Of the playoff. Exhaustion is just, like, you're. You're just trying to calm your body down, you know, chill out and. And. But it's hard to do, and. And especially the closer you get, it was incredibly hard, you know, to. To get your mind right and. And get your rest and then get ready for the next one.

[Keith Yandel]

Well, you mentioned the first game being the hardest then. I believe it was the first game of the entire playoffs when you and Brady dropped the gloves at center ice. Like, what happened there? Was it you having nerves? Was it him asking you, vice versa, like, how did that all happen? Because it was iconic. And when it happened, I'm like, this is the start of a DVD championship.

[Paul Bissonnette]

I know.

[Keith Yandel]

You know, title thing.

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, it was. Yeah. I mean, he's. I mean, you know, Brady, he's. He's an exceptional player, Physical player, demands it and plays, plays hard. And honestly, I didn't even really think about it much before the series started, you know, but kind of just before the game, I'm like, oh, he might ask me to fight. And I was like, all right.

[Paul Bissonnette]

That just popped in your head?

[Jordan Staal]

Yeah, it kind of did. I was like. I mean, I saw it, know, at world championships whenever he did the, you know, the Four nations thing, and I was like, oh, that's. I'm like, maybe we might do it this time. And. And then now I kind of left it at that. And then, sure enough, like, it's like, he starts. I'm like, okay. And I'm starting against him. I figured I would play against him, and, you know, I'm line up to the draw, and, you know, he. He kind of pokes his head up from the. The side of the circle. He's like, we're going to series. I'm like, okay. And he's like, you want to do it now? I'm like, all right. And I was. Was it like. And, yeah, I mean, gentlemen, how the wife and kids and. Yeah, just kids being kid. But it was, you know, it. It was a cool moment. You know, I think it really. I think it brought our team together. I, you know, I think those Panther series, I. I think we.

[Ryan Whitney]

[Jordan Staal]

We got, you know, we got out muscle a bit too much, and, And I regret not being. Doing a better job with that stuff, but I think not. Not really fighting, obviously, after that, but the way we held our own against a really. A really physical team and a tough team, I thought you see a lot of other guys start caring for each other and stepping in in certain situations, and there. There were moments there that I hadn't seen in the past from our team and I. And maybe that was part of the, you know, striking eye a little bit right off the bat from what I did. But. But you could see I think I was ready. I was ready to do anything, man. And we. I wanted to win. That was all I kept. I just want to win. And so if that's what it takes, then whatever, I'll do it. I'll do it for the fellows and we'll.

[Keith Yandel]

We'll.

[Jordan Staal]

We'll find a way to win this thing. If I get knocked out, you guys better figure it out. But, like, you know, it's like. But like, let's. Let's do this thing. So that's. That's kind of how it went. Obviously. You know, momentum we got from that was incredible. Our fans were behind it, and the boys rallied around it, and it was. It was a cool moment.

[Ryan G]

The fan base is nuts to me because, you know, you saw some of the tough years in. The building's empty, and I think the mega church.

[Ryan Whitney]

Yeah.

[Ryan G]

And Tom Dundon mentioned it, and all of a sudden, now it's like that place is rocking. It's a smaller building, but I'm. I'm interested off the ice. Like, are you getting stopped and recognized, or is it kind of that feel of just like, hey, when they're at the games, they're unreal. But there's not much going on in terms of. Of, like, fans coming up to you at dinner or anything like that?

[Jordan Staal]

No, no, it's. There's still a little bit of that, but I don't know. I mean, the, the south, man, there's some. Just some good people out there, and they have. They have respect for it. I would say a good story for that would be after we won, we were sitting at the restaurant, the Guys eat pre yard house.

Yeah, it's got to be a chain.

It was Olive Garden actually. No, it was uh, it was uh, play Bachi and Benny Han, Benny Hana bus.

[Paul Bissonnette]

He's got a part time job. He's everyone diarrhea and every heartbeat with the rice. He's like, hey, wait till you see the voice wallet. I'm making league minimum again for the

next six years whipping shrimp in the stalzi's mouth.

We're sitting on serving Jarvis's buddies, but they have to get the extended 10 table.

[Jordan Staal]

We're sitting on the patio and you know the cup's out there and we're just having a few beers, hanging out, trying to figure out what we're going to do with this thing the next day and, and people started figuring it out and we didn't tell him we were coming besides the restaurant for the most part. But. And just very politely they all just started making a line and just like taking photos and, and we would just sit there and they were enjoying the cup, which is what you want or you want them to experience it. And they just like they made this nice lawn. They were taking photos and everyone take their turn. They would leave and they would say good job guys. And like it was just like, I mean it just like I couldn't imagine that in any other city. Just like it wouldn't, it wouldn't be like that. It would just be pulling up seats.

[Ryan G]

Yeah.

[Jordan Staal]

And like so much respect but, but so much energy and so much love too. And I say like another story with Archeniacs is just like in that, that building is incredible, man. Like it's so loud and, and, but, but they cheer like nonstop. Like it's not like they're, they're cheering for a amazing player. You know, a couple play like it's like, it's like there's just a, there's a belly behind it. Not like all the time and especially playoffs obviously, but I'd say like a great example is game five. We're up three nothing. I think you know, they, they did they score that 3:1, you know, and, and you know there's some time left but like, you know usually most places just go quiet and like. And they did like you go a little quiet but like they literally just started like before they even stopped the pucky and the place just starts going berserk but like for nothing, like they hadn't even dropped the puck. And also you just hear like another roar and they're like let's go. We, you, we got this, like. And no, they're behind us. Like, it was like. And like, it gives me the shows because, like, that's so cool. Like, that's. That's something that, like, they're like you.

[Ryan Whitney]

They were.

[Jordan Staal]

They were a part of it, right? And. And they felt it. We felt it. And such a cool connection with arcaniacs and how amazing they are as a fan base. And man, that city has grown and it's a. It's a. It's a hockey town, no questions asked. Like, you walk around and. And see what I've seen over the years, it's grown tenfolds and it's. It's been so cool to be a part of and call Raleigh home.

That's the aspect of it that. That it was just a place that was like, oh, down south. And now, you know, people really want to play there. And I think that the fans have a lot to do with that. You know, people may think that's crazy, but all of a sudden you see a fan base that's just so passionate with team. And I don't think you guys deal with, like, there's markets where the Boobirds may come out a little bit, but there it just seems like they just love the team. It doesn't. It doesn't really happen the way it does other places.

[Paul Bissonnette]

Even when we would criticize like on the pod and we would post the clip, the fans would come at us like rabid dogs. They would be. It might have been Dundon Burner accounts being like, you could even check the analytics. You need to check them out. Dominating these guys.

Check out these spreadsheets. They, like you said, they have your guys back and then just going to experience conference finals there, which was. I guess my last question is like, when you guys lost that first game to Montreal, were you kind of super even keel or was there a bit of anger inside of you or were you more like, fuck, we just had 12 days off because we swept the first two rounds were. We're a little flat.

[Jordan Staal]

There was all those things that they're. Honestly, all that ran through my brain for sure. That's a great question, Rush. And no, there. There is. There's some deep scars there. Obviously the media love the. The, you know, the line of us not being able to win games in the East Garments final. And obviously, you know, we rolling through two teams and then, you know, we get waxed first game. You're like, what in the world?

[Keith Yandel]

Like, what?

[Jordan Staal]

No, like. And I was like. And every time I sat down the bench and like, there's also a breakaway. Like, what is going on? What do we do? Like, that was. Honestly, that whole playoff room is the only time I'm like, what in the world are we doing? And it was.

[Ryan G]

It did.

[Jordan Staal]

It did look like we had, you know, a little bit too much time off. As much as I hated that question between series, I'm like, it was just like we. I mean, we practiced non stop and it was like, you know, what would you say? Is it rest or is it not? Like, what's best? I'm like, would you want. Like, should we have given them two games against Philly? Like, what do you think? Like, of course we're going to win every game, no matter what, and then we'll figure it out after that. Like, we're going to take the rest. We're going to enjoy it. I felt incredible. Like, for me, as like, for me is like, I may. I honestly don't, like, truly believe if we went 6, 7, 7 and rolled into that finals, I wasn't playing the way I was in that finals. There's no way. There's no way. But I was. I felt amazing, like, but rightfully so, because we had that rest. Like that. That is for sure. You know, obviously the young guys might have been fine, but for me personally, like, it was. It was for sure a game changer for us at the end.

And.

And it helped me a ton. And. But yeah, that first game, I was like, oh, crap, here we go.

[Paul Bissonnette]

Was there like a speech or a moment? Maybe it was then or in the finals. Could be that cinder block story where, like, you just kind of. You, like something happened and it just, like, it was poetic and it kind of just righted the ship again. And was there one moment that sticks out the most from, like a meeting perspective?

[Jordan Staal]

I mean, I like what Roddy said. Well, I mean, after the game won in Montreal, like, he. He ripped us and was like, what are we doing? Like, that was not us. And we'll show you. I go, we'll show you tomorrow. We'll go through the video. And like I said, I think I've said this before. That was from that game on in that series. I think that was the most clinical hockey we ever played.

That was crazy, dude. It was like they couldn't get the puck.

[Paul Bissonnette]

I was polishing a turd on television for four games. Like, oh, yeah, you know, maybe that's just.

[Jordan Staal]

Yes, it was incredible. I mean, I felt like they just didn't. They didn't really touch the puck and we just played unbelievable. Everyone did though. It was like, you'd see everyone was like, all right, like, we're. We're kicking this door down. We've had enough of this, you know, this Eastern Conference bs. And. And I would say the other speech was. Was actually a big one for me personally. When Roddy came in after we lost that overtime in. What was it in Vegas? 2 1. We were down 21 when you came back, Came back like, incredible, right? I mean, we. We were. We were kicking ourselves down four. We're like, let's just, you know, we. We just got to take chunks out of them. Like, you know, whatever that looks like for here on out the rest of the game. And bang. Score three goals. Like, we're back into. Let's go. And. And like, you know, and then, you know, we tie it up. And like, all the things you're like, you gotta feel that momentum is coming. And we. We. And we were.

We did have them. We were playing better, obviously. They had an incredible bounce. We had some bounces too. But, you know, and the game's over and that's it. And you know, Roddy comes in and. And. And does this feel and I'm. I'm like, I'm already cross eyed. I'm like, I'm, you know, pissed.

But like, and he does the, like, he does the, you know, you know, we lost the game. You know, lost because we gave up four.

And I was like, yep. And I, like, I don't ever say anything ever. Like, when he's talking, I was like, yeah. And he's like, we, you know, we.

You might lose it, you might be out. You know, I mean, like, there. There is no run where you ever feel like you're gonna doubt that you might lose this whole thing. And there was a moment there. Like, we were like, you know, we're down 2:1 on the road and you know, a crap, you know, obviously a crap loss and whatever, but, you know, there's there's always of a bunch moment in any run that, like, you feel like you might lose it all. And, and that was kind of our moment. I think it was, you know, it was only 2:1 and we got that. But, you know, you get down three one, you know, and, and you know, it's tough. So we came back. I thought that game four was incredible, you know, and then we kind of took over. I think we took over that series, obviously. I mean, we won the next three, but we, we were the better team from then on out after that game. Game and, and more consistent what we like to do. And I thought that speech was. Was really a really big one for us.

When Roddy left the room, did you address the team or it was just like he kind of.

No, I think what he said was, was good. I was like, that's. You're exactly right. And you know that honestly, like, I, I. There, there are moments where I have addressed the room over times, but, you know, I didn't. I honestly didn't feel like I had to. That that whole run was like. We lost three games, like, and we were in like, every other one for the most part. Even that Montro. I mean, we were coming back. Like, there was. There was like, what I saw out there, the guys were all in. And that's why I was honestly probably so pissed off for that one because, like, yes, we did lose it in the first, you know, four goals, but, like, my goodness, we clawed back and the guys were. The guys have this thing. Like, we have it. We just, we just can't do that again. And. But we have it, you know, so it was, it was. It wasn't a ton of talking by me, and I didn't have to. I mean, I really didn't have to. There was, there was a few, you know, obviously pregame stuff that, you know, you, you try to plant the seed in what we want to do before a game, but for the most part, after every game, I felt. I felt good about what we were doing out there. And there was really no reason to, to, to say anything, you know, besides what we were moving forward.

He works for the Athletic. And the spokesperson from the Hockey hall of Fame told the Athletic that Hockey Ops, the NHL hockey operation, signed off on it and that the Hockey hall of Fame had nothing to do with it. So.

But again I, I don't know what the parameters are as far as part time full time employees but I think the one player, Nystrom, who, who he had played 38 games, 41's the minimum you can petition which they did for Dari Rea because he only played seven games in the regular season after getting traded there played one playoff game but you can make a petition in the league and approve it like the Bruins did with Max Avad who didn't play at all in 2010, 2011 but still got his name.

So it's over. It's 41 or more games in the regular season or one game in the

finals, one game in the final. Yeah, yeah, but again, they, and they. I think it was 94. They brought in that new rule where you can, you know, make a, a

They only lost what, three games all playoffs.

You're right. Right, exactly. Because it wasn't like a long list like, oh, this guy, this guy. All these should have been on instead of the kids. So.

Yeah, I think, you know, one of those headlines, you're like, oh, with the F. But then, you know, you dig into it, you read up on a little bit and it's like, okay, it's maybe not as, as bad as initially looked, but it was bad for a lot of folks in Calgary or Vancouver. They lost their sports radio stations. Fans out there not too happy. Rogers shut down six radio stations in Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax and Kitchener. Vancouver lost, uh, Sportsnet 650 and News 1130. Calgary lost Sportsnet 966 News Radio. This is obviously a huge loss for fans. Of course, the people who lost their jobs, we felt terrible for, you know, media has been kind of shrinking and shrinking and you know, companies are just tightening belts all over the place. So you do feel awful for these people who lost their jobs and again, the fans who lose that connection. And you know, and obviously, you know, Rogers has a connection to Toronto. So that feeds into the. Everybody is, you know, is a Toronto fan and they, you know, they ignore the teams out west. So either way, just, I want to acknowledge that that's a tough loss for, again, the people who lost their jobs

and the fans who, yeah, their livelihoods, man, it's like, you know, it's what keeps you the, the, the, the wheels spinning too. So that's, that sucks. Let's hope these people land on their feet and, and figure out what the next move is. It's brutal. Like you said already, it's been happening a lot. Like every year it seems like a few stations or. Yeah, a few groups of guys and, and girls lose their jobs due to these, these network slowing down on the radio front yeah, it stinks.

Man, I think there should be more of that in soccer. Like I, like I, I don't mind watching soccer, but watching these guys flop around Every like minute 90 seconds, it's like it's a drama fest.

No, I mean, yeah, I think that's the one thing Americans are like, what the fuck? I mean you're watching NFL running backs usually just run through six, seven guys doing whatever they can and then you see soccer and like you're just. Somebody blows on you and you're throwing your hands up in the air. But what a game. I mean Switzerland went down to 10 men. It went to extra time. I think Argentina got two more. It was 3:1. But the goal in extra time to go up 2:1, which was basically, you know, that was it. It was sick. Guy cut back. I looked him up. I think he plays for like, Athletico Madrid or something. But the talent on these guys. I told you last week, I was running around the backyard with a soccer ball. Running full speed with a soccer ball.

I just think it's amazing. It's amazing what they do. And having somebody kick one at you 60 miles an hour. And just. What do they call it when you.

I'm reading. France and Spain are the two best teams left now. Argentina doesn't die. This team, they just, they just keep winning and winning. They look, they looked dead to who was the quarterfinal or the round of 16 against. They were done. They were down two nothing with 10 minutes to go. They won that one. And Belgium. That was Egypt. Yeah. So Messi, if he gets another one. I love seeing every single. Because there was a video I saw and which they were talking about how, like, Ronaldo Messi, who's the goat? And then it was a video of, like 25 legendary soccer players. And they didn't even take one second to be like, messi, Messi, Messi. All of them from all these different countries. So I think it's, it's quite obvious that he is the number one greatest soccer player to ever lose.

Yeah, I thought that was a tough call. I know the guy already had a yellow, but I, I don't. To throw a guy out for. And it was a blatant dive, obviously, but to, to toss that guy and, you know, you give, you essentially giving him a power play. I know it's not the terminology in soccer, but it, it just seemed like a little excessive.

He'd been at the Herald over 35 years. He retired a few years back. But, you know, like, you know, a lot of people when they start out, like you sort of start off writing about high school, whether it's an internship or you're in college, whatever, but. But you know, Danny found his. His niche with this. And he was probably the preeminent, like high school sports reporter in the country. He. He was there for so long, and I never met him, unfortunately. But everybody who. Who did said he was just such a wonderful guy. A great sense of humor, just a terrific human being. And you know, like I said, like, that's usually a stepping stone. He made a black comedy about the black Cold War in the midst of the Cold War. I think it came out in 1964 and you know, people were like thought we were on the brink of like world global disaster. And he made like a comedy, a black comedy about it. Peter Sellers, who played the Pink Panther, he plays like three different roles. Again, old flick. Awesome.
