I've gotten a few in Canada, too. I was at Cactus Club, Super Cactus, the one that Drake talked about when he zoomed in on it. One of his Instagram videos. He likes getting one of the fancy drinks that they have there.

Wait, all the Cactus Clubs that I enjoy? There's actually one that's called Super Cactus Club.

[Biz]

Yeah, it's a great. Where the pack rim in Vancouver is on the corner where that whale is. The. Like, the fake whale. North Vancouver. And it's huge. It's like a size of a Costco. They could probably seat 400 people in there. And there was a couple guys in there, and one of them on the way down told me he was from Thunder Bay. One other guy through the glass near the kitchen. I end up going later on the week to a restaurant called Nightingale that my buddy David Hawksworth owns, that Kevin BXA put me in touch with. And sure enough, I walked in. Those two guys from Thunder Bay were there again. Same two guys sitting right there as soon as I walked in. So we've been getting the pinkies up. Attacks going quite a bit through North America.

What province are we? What provinces are we in or not in? Because I get messages. I wish we could still be here, but where is it in Canada?

I. I think maybe it's in Quebec right now, and then maybe one other province because it's been. The tariffs took it away.

Okay, so Biz Jeff's birthday party for everyone doesn't know the man who runs biz's life. Without him, he'd be. You'd be a nobody. You'd be a shrub. And he turned 40, and it was a banger. So did memes go out?

Memes flew out. To him and him and oldie have been on this tour for the last three weeks. Like shout out to Canadian oldies Wife.

Oh, it's like going to Vegas two nights. See you later. Like, don't want to see it for another year. So he goes there for like eight, nine days. I don't even think they had a ticket or anything planned. And sure enough, they end up getting like brought around. They're in this box, that box. Tickets to this. They're at Ella Langley. All of a sudden he's meeting her backstage, meeting this guy backstage. Then he flies all the way. I think he went back to Toronto. He was there less than 24 hours and then off to Pei Prince.

Like, go to see your kids. He's like, no, I just had to do some laundry. Didn't even talk.

[Biz]

He just had to do. No, his wife had to do it.

[Keith]

Imagine doing his laundry.

[Biz]

Oh, just G strings and half. Half crop tops. And then off the PI. And then he went from PI right over to. To BC and he like, he. I think he was sleeping on memes buddy's couch for a few days. And then of course over to Jeff's birthday, which was a riot, obviously a lot of people. There was like 140 people that ended up showing up. He did it at a. He'd been to a concert before, the Arkels, big Canadian band. I think they got like 220 people in for the Arkels concert. And he went and saw it. So he's like, oh, that's a cool venue. It's an old strip club. It used to be a supper club. Turned in a strip club. It's a pretty clean strip club on the inside, surprisingly. And then he got a dj. And then, like I said, it was just booked out for all of us and our friends, 140 of us. So everybody showed up. It was a great time and celebrated. Celebrated him in style, man. Well, well deserved.

No, Jeff. Jeff wrote the speech.

Jeff gave it to himself. No. So we had. So you got to keep in mind, like all the people there, like, Jeff went to like high school with. So they know Jeff even more so than I do. So I, like, I'm not a big speech guy. I called Jeff, obviously, beforehand, like, and. And always tell him how appreciative I am of him and, like, how much I love him. Obviously, like, took care of the dj, like, helped him out and said, hey, here, happy birthday. I don't know. Do you think that's weird that I didn't give him a speech?

No, no. I. I was gonna be surprised if you did, but I thought the moment might have just kind of overtaken you and you're like, I just want to address everyone.

I thought you're. I thought your only involvement was the sign. The sign just said, if you know Jeff, come in.

Yeah, that was. Well, actually, no. So he thought of that himself or so. And so they put that up on the billboard out front. And then my idea was to put cum as in C M. Cuz it was a strip club.

What was it, a nine day rip. I got to go see, like, some of my. My friends have had kids over the last couple years. I got to hang out with them and see, like, how much they've grown and how much they've come along and just to kind of, you know, fill the love. Tang up with the people that I know north of the border. So now I'm in Victoria for the. Basically the rest of summer. And yeah, I'm excited to just kind of get some downtime here.

Well, I took his golf clubs when we landed in Boston, so That he didn't have to then bring them to Baltimore, where he was going, so you'd have to lug them around Baltimore, you know? So I was like, I'll take him home now. Part of that was shipping it to him. That was. That was. That was eight days ago. It's one of those things where you just got to do it, right? Like, I have a problem of, like, I got to do this. Well, why haven't I done it? No reason.

Why I aggressively press the button without an answer is a question I'll ask myself till the end of time. I just wanted to win that race and then kind of thought I'd have more than, you know, two seconds to have an answer. I didn't have an answer immediately. Knew that I'd be. The storyline in Dave Portnoy's world. And unfortunately, it's turned into that now. The problem with me doing that game is I'm not that quick on my feet in terms of, like, when the lights are at their brightest. You've seen double overtime, hockey's championship game, put own net to lose, Stanley cup finals, you know, didn't play great. Olympic gold medal game minus one. Didn't see another shift. When the lights are the brightest, do I show up? Not necessarily. Family feud wasn't for me. But I still just don't know why I wanted to win that race against Ace. Flag. Talk about the wrong name. He should have been named Cooper, and I think Cooper should have been named Ace because he got crushed in the department of being born second and then looking like that.

No, it was Ace's. Ace is the worst player. Oh, you think Ace. They. They should have switched names when they realized what was happening. But, yeah, I don't really have much else to say besides it was a disaster. And. And the fact that I had to wait and wait and wait for it to be aired made me even more sick.

Jason Robertson, I, I gotta be honest guys. I saw you signed a one year deal. I'm like, I don't understand how this guy's on a one year contract. All the deals we've seen given out and he's playing again for everything on the table now he's a UFA after the season, so that's what makes a lot of sense. But 12 million bucks was the number. Okay, I, I, I just can't believe this guy. And he was also offered an eight year deal for around 120 million. Did not want to be on the Seattle Kraken. I get that. But he's back in Dallas and let's see what happens now, biz, because the rumors aren't going anywhere. It's not going to change now.

So my understanding is he was offered Jack Eichel's contract. So I don't know. For a guy who's had as much, much success as he's had in Dallas, a place where you're playing with no state tax, a team that's going to be good. Like who? Whoever leaves Dallas. Nobody really leaves Dallas.

No, people don't want to leave there. They love playing there. And Eiko's deal, if you're not, it's eight years, 108 million. So like 13 and a half. Really want, if he really wanted to be there, he was offered that deal. I don't get that.

[Biz]

And no, no problem. And he was offered a deal for 15 million from Seattle. Okay, well you don't want to go there and you don't want to play there. And now you're being offered essentially with, when that, that tax implication comes in, in 2028 in Seattle, your base, you would be making around the same amount of money as you would signing an 8 times 13 and a half in Dallas. So I don't know if this guy just wants to hit the absolute top of the market, but how oftentimes do you get paid like the top of the market and get to decide where you're going to get the play as far as one of the best locations in the NHL? Like you're also trying to win, so you're trying to maybe leave a little bit more on the table for other guys on the team or for more signings to come. I think it's fucking crazy. If he was offered that deal and he didn't sign it for, for, for, for, for what? For what are we talking here? And now he signs a one year deal. He, he, he becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, if I'm not mistaken. Correct. So yeah, all the control back to him on where he can go. My understanding also is they had a few, one or two other trades for him to even go places, but he's not willing to go and sign there either. So it seems like he's a pretty, it's not very easy to keep him happy right now. I think basically what he's telling them is he wants essentially what he was offered in Seattle. But when you, when you're playing on a team like Dallas in a market like that, I don't think you, I don't think he should be getting paid 15 fucking million dollars.

Did you guys see Jeff Merrick's report too? He reported that he knows for a fact that some Stars players are pretty pissed about the whole, how this whole thing was handled by, by Robertson.

Well, well, for this year he kind of like saved them money a little bit. He's only making 12. Okay. Now the noise doesn't go away of like, is Robertson getting traded? Robertson getting traded? I, I just think, I don't think he could come out and be like, I really want to play in Dallas anymore if that deal was offered to him. I, I, I just can't buy you saying, I really want to be a Dallas Star, buddy. You just got offered $108 million by them for eight years and you're saying no. Now my thought is there's got to be one team he wants to play for. Right? And by going to UFA Then it's his decision also with the way the market's gone this summer. We've talked endlessly about these numbers being ridiculous. It seems like he's got plenty of confidence in himself. Why wouldn't he with the numbers he puts up? He's like, I'm going to go score 40, get 98 points again and I'm probably going to get an eight year deal for what? 18, seven year deal for 18 as UFA. Like if you're looking to get every single cent out of this thing, I could never chirp somebody for that. But you can't say you, you really want to be in Dallas that bad.

But like Biz said, like he, he, you could do that in a Seattle, you could do that in a, you know, Winnipeg or something like that. But the teams that he's going to want to go to, are they going to be able to pay him that money that.

Yes. Without knowing where he really wants to be? I don't know. But dude, he is one of the guys that actually has the numbers come to be a ufa, to be able to be like, I'm getting max payment from someone. Yeah. Is it going to be a good team? I don't know what great teams out there will have that money. I mean, I guess the cap is going up so everyone has a little bit more.

I could see a guy playing on a team that's kind of like, you know, middle pack, maybe missing playoffs, who's lighting it up like that, wanting to eventually play it out like this, where he can go to a good team and maybe even in some case take a discount. But to be on a team who. I would say that over the last like three, four years, every Dallas has probably been in everybody's top six top seven teams, right? So if you're looking to win, so you're essentially, if Jack Eichel just signed that deal, you're looking at top market money and you get to play in Dallas where obviously he's comfortable and loves because he's had that much success. He's gotten to play with unreal guys, by the way, which if you look across their team like, like Haskin is fucking, what's he making? Like 8, I think 8 million, right? So if you're Haskin and you're saying, fuck buddy, like I'm making eight and you won't even take like close to double what I'm making here, like what the fuck's going on? Or at least 1 1/2 and then you got, I mean, what's Rupe Hintz make, he makes fucking peanuts too. You got Miko Rotten and who I think everybody could agree, Stanley cup champion, probably a better body of work than what he has eight times 12. So he's going to be paid a million and a half dollars more than Ratnan. And then all of a sudden, man, they're pretty locked up on the wings, man. That's a pretty strong, strong group. And if you're on that team, and G said that Merrick said a few guys aren't happy about it. Like Maverick Bork is this up and coming player for their team. And you know, he's, he's, he's done a lot for their group. Like obviously he was due to get a raise, but with the uncertainty of what's going on with Robertson, all of a sudden, like, they can't commit to him to wait to see what goes on with him. And then all of a sudden, finally they signed a deal and he gets, he's like, I'll commit to you guys for one year. It's like, we just lost a valuable player that could have helped us win here because like, not only are you being greedy about it, but you don't even want to lock in long term. So it's that thing.

Is that so hints Heskinen and Wyatt Johnson all make 8.4 and then rotten, it's 12. It's like, dude, you did 13 and a half. Like, we're all kind of like if, if they're all pulling on the same rope here, which by the way, like this, this is how it goes. Some guys are, are, are more into just earning every single dollar they can. But if you look at it from Robertson's side. Okay, like you see. All right, well, look at my numbers compared to Connor Bedard's. Yes, he's younger. He just got 15 a year. Like, I'm not taking less than that. Okay, then you might have to play in a place like Seattle. You might have to play on a team that would do anything for a stud and pay whatever you want, but you're not going to be on a very good team. Whereas Dallas, I think everyone would be shocked if they weren't in the mix again come, come the playoffs this year. Like, they just have a great roster, they got a great goalie, they have an awesome thing there. It's a great city to play in. So, yeah, it's surprising, just odd if he did get offered that. That's crazy.

And like, from what I've heard is like he got, they played hardball with him on his contract last time he was trying to get everything, trying to get back at them maybe a little bit. But it's like, dude, at what point both sides have to win? Unless you want to go somewhere else. He should just say, okay, just trade me. It doesn't matter where, but like you have to either play ball with the team if you really want to be there, or fucking leave.

Yep, another signing. This one happy for this guy. Massachusetts guy. John Marino. The Utah, the utah mammoth. Boom. 6.75 a year for an eight year deal. So what was that? Over 50 million.

I was like, do you guys know him?

I don't know him personally, but I've heard amazing things about him. I guess. He's hilarious. Hell of a player too. Now that's a, that's a great payday for him. And then they, they had that off season where they ended up getting rid of Matheson and Marino and then they kind of went to the shitter. Yep, three years in Pittsburgh Jersey and then last year with Utah. 35 games, 1 goal, 13 assists, 14 points.

You hit that market and there's a bunch of ufa great defensive, which doesn't seem to really happen anymore. And that number's probably different, but the cap's going up and there's no UFAs and you get $50 million. So I'm so happy for that guy. And I never met him. Leave it, leave it at that. Leave it at that. Also, interestingly enough, Torch came out, Torts came out. I think Torts was bummed. He wanted, he wanted to go back with that Vegas team. And I, I, I totally get where he's coming from. He comes in there, they don't lose a game for, what was it, like 11 games in a row. They go on this run, they're dominating. They just run into a juggernaut in Carolina in One of the best Stanley cup finals I'll ever see. And he's told the next day, apparently, right when he sat down the next day, yeah, you're done. Do you think if they won the cup this year, they would have kept them?

They said they already had it made up in their mind that they were going to that to their AHL coach and that they thought it would be unfair to just throw him in the mix like that going into playoffs because all of a sudden then like the fans are judging him by his first playoff performance. And I think they obviously made the right call with, with what strings that Torts were, was able to pull. But I was kind of surprised after he came in there, worked his magic that maybe that wouldn't have altered their decision to maybe say, hey, let's run with him for a one year deal and see how he does. And maybe it didn't even work out. Halfway through the year and then boom, you're off to the new AHL coach like that. I, I was pretty shocked, especially the next day. And then I don't want to call it. I, I guess I can't call it cutthroat. Cause if that's the plan they had in mind and what they told the, the AHL coach, I guess they would have been gutless towards him. But, but my God, to go on a run like that and then get shown the door the next day, that's, that's tough. That's tough.

But he even said it like when he came over he was like, ah, I'm not even really doing anything. I'm just kind of letting them do their thing. I'm not even really coaching. It's like, oh yeah, maybe you should have been like, actually I changed everything. This team was brutal. I'm the reason why they went on an 11 game heater. So maybe he kind of screwed himself a little bit.

But Spinny said you gotta ask him about our pickleball battles. So you two are just like head to head.

I got demolished. Like, and I would say I'm pretty athletic guy. Like, I'm, you know, I grew up playing every sport and like, that's what we do in our free time. It's like, all right, you want to go play hoops? Perfect. You want to go play softball? Pickleball. Pickleball. He shelled me like I didn't get a point the first game we played. And then I was like, all right, now I'm like sweating out there. I'm running back and forth and you're rattled. Yeah, I was rattled.

He's a great small area game, buddy.

[Wit]

I love it. I love pickleball. Absolutely.

And I suck at tennis. Like, I can't. I can't get the top spin on it. So my ball goes into 200.

Two isn't a workout.

You're the best. Yeah. At one point, Keith's brother Brian and I, I think we went like 15 days in a row. Like three out of five sets, games to 11. Like good workouts.

Your heart rate gets going too nice because you're doing the quick feet. It's like you're doing the ladder drill, but you're not having to think about it. Why are you laughing? You don't do the ladder anymore. Is that of the work ladder.

But I don't know if I would say pickle ball is like the ladder.

I was a deman. Working the corners mostly, and then they switched me to forward and then I had to go all up.

And then you had to get on the ladder a lot.

Smitty drives me nuts though. Cuz he is one of Those kids, that's just very good at everything. Oh, no, you're playing golf with them. He smack. I'm like, okay, enough.

I did dust him in golf last week.

Do you guys, like. Do you guys have a group text going where. When he's walking in with these. These outfits and all these girls are commenting all the time, you guys just give it to him?

Not really. Like, I don't give it to him much. I mean, he's got his. He's got his stuff figured out a little bit already.

You know what happened? That woman who did the video of him in Celebrini.

He's like, yeah. After that, it got a little insane.

And then he was like, now practices at San Jose. There's like. Like hundreds of girls at their practices.

It is insane. And it's. It's constant.

Are you guys the same age?

[Maddie Beniers]

I'm two years old. God. I don't even know when we got tight. It was just one summer, and he was. We were skating together and became buddies. Just. Yeah.

Became buddies at NTDP together either then?

[Maddie Beniers]

No, he was the year I left, so he was actually. No.

[Wit]

Yeah.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah. I was in Michigan by the time he was there. My family kind of knew his parents because his mom went out with him to Michigan, and my mom did the same, and I kind of, like, knew of him. And then probably, like, two, three years ago, we started, like, skating together in the summers, working out, kind of had a good time together. And then I think I started. I used to live with Berard in the summers. The guys with the Rangers, I kind of down. And then he went back to Providence, and then I like living with someone, and Smitty kind of needed someone to live with him in Boston, so it worked out well.

[Wit]

What is the routine like in the summer? Because we talk a lot how guys are on their skates all summer. We never did that. Are you skating now pretty constantly, or.

[Maddie Beniers]

No, not yet. No. Okay. More like my biggest thing is, you know, getting bigger. And so for me, like, going on the ice at this point probably wouldn't be the smartest thing for me, at least. But it's different for every guy. Like, Smitty's probably skating twice a week right now, maybe a little bit more. For me, it's like, all weight room until probably next week. And then I'll get back on the ice and start doing like two, three times a week.

[Wit]

Okay.

[Biz]

Yeah, if you're getting on like, yeah,

[Wit]

July is early enough.

[Biz]

Oh, for sure. I just said that was one of the things I regretted the most is I wish I would have just. Just not even to like bag myself in conditioning. It was more about just staying on your edges.

[Keith]

Less ladder, more skates.

[Biz]

That's the problem, man. I was going too hard on the ladder drill, Matt.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, well, I did that last summer too, where like I went to Worlds and then by the time I was back, everyone's already skating. And I was like, oh, I gotta. Yeah, I gotta skate now because everyone. Everyone in the gym skating. So I didn't really have that much time off last summer.

[Wit]

But you won the gold.

[Maddie Beniers]

But we won.

Yeah.

So that was sweet. So, yeah, I was given take. But then this summer I was like, all right, I'm gonna take some time off.

[Wit]

Who were you playing with over there?

[Maddie Beniers]

Smitty a little bit. I was. I was with Smitty and Gautier a little bit. And then I was with Tomer and Frankie Nazar.

[Biz]

So you got to win it.

[Keith]

Yeah.

[Maddie Beniers]

I was on the ice though, when we won it. But yeah, we won them, right?

[Biz]

Yeah, that must have been such a cool experience.

[Keith]

First time in like 80 years.

[Maddie Beniers]

We also had a great squad. Like.

[Wit]

Yeah, that team was loaded, fun look.

[Keith]

Fun group going out. Yeah, that's.

[Wit]

Where was that?

[Maddie Beniers]

We were in Denmark. Herning, Denmark. In the middle of nowhere. There was like one bar. I actually have a funny one from that. Probably one of the most like demoralizing moments of all time. We just are in the round robin. We were playing pretty well too, and we got shelled by Switzerland on a back to back. We played them. You would have thought these guys were Wayne Gretzky out there skating around us.

[Wit]

It was the Russians in a Switzerland jersey.

[Maddie Beniers]

Unbelievable. I was like, what is. We were all like, what is going on? And so we finished the game and like, you know, I don't think we had anything the next day. So we were like, all right, we're gonna go center town and eat some food and have a couple beers. I don't know. And we get there and the entire. Every single Switzerland fan that was in Denmark was in on this street. And they started. They all stood up. We walked right through the middle. All of them. They all stood up and started like doing this chant. It was like we had basically laughing at you. Oh, it was so embarrassing. Oh, I think I went home after that. They sent me home. I was like, I'm go to bed. Yeah, let me play them in the finals.

[Wit]

Okay. All right. So, yeah, payback.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, we got a little payback there. But yeah, it was, it was a great time. I, I would definitely go back. Yeah.

[Wit]

This year just kind of didn't feel it.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, this year just wasn't. Yeah, I just wanted to get home and train. Yeah, that was kind of the biggest thing for me this summer was like, I gotta get bigger. You know, you look at a lot of, you know, sentiment around the league. You know something, they're, they're bigger, they're stronger guys that helps them with, you know, in the corners and draws, you know, just like shutting down other guys as well. So that was, for me, that's kind of like my next.

[Biz]

It's, it's a fine line though because you're trying to like gain weight and gain size, but yet the game, it seems like year over year it just keeps getting faster and faster. So how do you kind of find that balance of like what do you do for workouts and how are you, how do you, how do you feel that you're like kind of retaining the weight?

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, it's just like putting on more muscle. It's not really like I don't want like a belly, you know, like. No, but yeah, it's just like putting on more muscle and I do think that for myself as well, like putting on more muscle. Yeah, it's going to give me more weight, but also it's going to make me faster.

[Biz]

Right.

[Maddie Beniers]

More having more muscle in my legs and my butt. Like, like those areas are just, they're gonna help my skating as well. So for me it's kind of which is your strength already, which is one of my strengths. So kind of a double edged sword. That's why I was like, I can't, I can't go this year and kind of just went right back home and just got in the way room.

[Biz]

So what, like what are you up like 5, 10 pounds already?

[Maddie Beniers]

I lose a lot during the year, so I'm probably up like 8 to 10 already.

[Big Cat]

Wow.

[Maddie Beniers]

Another like 8, 8 to 10 after that.

[Biz]

Like over the course of a game. Like do you weigh yourself before and after?

[Maddie Beniers]

Usually before and after a game? Not necessarily, but I'll lose like after a practice, like probably three or four pounds.

[Biz]

Okay.

[Maddie Beniers]

And mostly water weight, but you just gotta like pound water and get it back.

[Biz]

We, I, I remember playing with guys where they would lose 10 pounds over the course of the game. Because they just leak, so.

[Maddie Beniers]

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Especially our. Our goalies, I think, had that issue for a while, but yeah, it is. It is so annoying. I would rather have. Probably have in my situation than the other way of not being able to lose it.

[Keith]

Yeah, that's the tough.

[Biz]

What is. How has it been as far as coming in where an organization is pretty much new to, like, the changes over the past, like, four years since you've been there? Like, is it. Is it. You know, obviously getting used to a new city, but, like, they're getting used to having an NHL team and maybe changing things and doing things differently.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah. Well, we're pretty fortunate. Like, they love sports in Seattle. Love it.

[Wit]

Great fan base there for.

[Biz]

Unreal.

[Maddie Beniers]

You guys were all there for the outdoor game.

[Wit]

Yeah, it was awesome.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, they love sports, regardless of what sport it is. Seahawks there, they don't necessarily. They're starting to understand it now, but there were definitely some times in, like, the first year, the second year, like, a goal gets called back and they're, like, still going nuts, and you're like.

[Wit]

You're like, oh, that's by four feet.

[Maddie Beniers]

That one didn't count. But no, they've. That's been great. The organization is unbelievable. Like, the way we get treated is.

[Wit]

The rank is sweet. Like, there's some really. They. They. The owners really did it up right. You know, they were. I think they were telling us about, like, they were pretty over budget when they first built the rink and built all the stuff, because they were like, all right, well, if we're gonna do this, we got to do it right. Do it the right way. So they're. They're pretty awesome about that. And the way they. They. The way they treat us out there is pretty second to none. I mean, I haven't played on other teams, but I would say, like, it's pretty unreal.

Well, even from. I'm sure you guys talk in summer workouts.

Yeah.

You guys got like. Yeah, we were talking about it yesterday when we were in with Phoenix. Like, the league owned us. It was. We were buying our own lunches. Like, now everything's there for you guys.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah. And, yeah, the Utah guys talk about how great it is over there, for sure.

[Keith]

Yeah.

[Maddie Beniers]

Compared. Compared to.

It's funny because your rookie year, you guys, you made the, you know, you make the playoffs, you go to win.

[Biz]

Didn't they upset Colorado?

[Wit]

Yeah, Game seven. And then went to game seven, the

second round with Dallas. Yeah.

[Wit]

Yeah. So. And then all Of a sudden, it's been, you know, more difficult. Right.

[Maddie Beniers]

For sure.

[Wit]

Like, it. Part. Part of it probably is like, it was great making the playoffs and the fans love it, but you didn't end up getting, like, another high pick with yourself. Right. You know, like, that's probably something where you look at both sides, it was great to get in, but. Oh, we. We almost maybe might have been better off being, like, worse that first year.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah. I don't know. It's not that.

That's a goal.

[Maddie Beniers]

No, it's not. You're. You're right. I mean, it's tough regardless. Like, you look at. Gosh, you look at this year like we were. We were in a spot for so long.

Yeah, you started off good.

[Maddie Beniers]

Started off great. You know, we went to second half of the year after the break and just couldn't. Couldn't really get that Mojo going again, get that confidence. You know, we got really hot right before the break. So, you know, sometimes it's just a little bit of that. It's like, are you hot at the right time, the right time in the year? You know, you look at. God, she look at Detroit, too. Like, obviously, there's all that stuff going on right now, but, like, they were in a playoff spot for almost the entire year.

[Wit]

Yeah.

[Maddie Beniers]

I mean, so. And I think we got enough veteran presence to, like, you know, get us over that edge of, like, okay, we put ourselves in a great spot this year. To make it now, the last 20 games, you gotta just like, make sure you're. You're winning. You're just playing winning hockey, like, that's all that matters at that point.

[Keith]

And for you, it's your fourth year. I think you've had three coaches already, right?

[Biz]

Like, is that coach killer?

[Keith]

No, not. But, like, you talk. No bringing in veteran guys like Brandon Montour comes over, guys like that who have won. Like, if you're not used to a coach, like, you got to have the guys in the locker room who are helping out. And I know you've been around four years. I'm sure you're a leader, too. But having those veteran guys must be huge in being in Seattle. Getting those guys to come there is huge as well.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, no, having those guys are. Is huge. You know, guys that have been in playoffs, you know, won cops. You know, we have, you know, Schwarzi in there. We had Montour, you know, Vince D. We got a lot of guys that have Stevenson. We got a bunch of guys that have won it, that have done it, that know how to do it. You Know, I think the organization also. I think part of the reason why we've had different coaches is, like, they want to win now, and that's pretty important to them. I think our, you know, our ownership group and, you know, management group is trying to be as aggressive as possible and, like, get new people, get new guys. So I think that could be a potential reason for the turnover as well as, you know, the lack of success throughout the. Throughout the team or the team, you know, not doing as well as we should have. So, yeah, it's tough. It's tough year to year, but. But, you know, it was pretty promising last year. I. I think we. We had a really good team. We. We did a good enough job to hopefully make it in. We didn't make it in, and, you know, hopefully next year we do.

I was out there for that Winter Classic game, and we. We ended up meeting you guys at that bar we saw you at, the one where.

So I ended up going to Michigan because I knew trust got and Bordo. Those are guys that I played with at the program. And then also, like, they had power, they had Johnson, they had. We were. We were stacked. And so we got there and it was just an unreal mix of like, we had older guys that you Know loved hockey, took it super seriously. Also love to get after it and go have a great time. And then we had a lot of young guys coming in. Like, my class was a lot of young guys that, like, probably took hockey a little bit more on the serious side and, like, didn't love going out. But it was a great mesh of, like, the older guys kind of forced us all out. The young guys all listened and went out. Like, we didn't have one. One post game where, like, we didn't have everybody there ever. Not once. Not once. Regardless of if you drank, if you didn't drink at all, like, you just had to be there. And we were all there all the time, and we had a blast doing it. Oh, my gosh, was it fun, Rex?

Or like, not until we got it, which is the craziest coincident of all time. The weekend before the tournament, we were going to the national tournament. We were like, we're not going out. So everyone stayed in. We were like, we can't risk this after. We just did it all year. All year. We can't risk it.

So no one went out. Not one guy went out. We were like, all right, we're going to do this. We're. We're. We're. We're all going to do this together. And a guy got it right right when we got there. We didn't. One guy had it. Yeah, one guy. One guy had it. And then based on like the rules at that point in time, it was like one guy had it and then other guys had to quarantine for like two weeks because they were around that.

That was the fake. That was the fake world we all lived in. When I got yelled at for not bringing down the groceries in the well

What do you, what do you make of how like the college hockey rise and how popular it is and just like the growth of it in general

and guys playing in the AHL and then going back to college now? Yeah, some of that. It's crazy.

I love. I mean it's great for college hockey. I think. It's rightfully so. Like I think college. We would always have these debates like Canadian Junior league versus college. I don't even think it's close to be honest game.

But it does suck now. And I went on when they made the rule of CHL to you to ncaa and I was like, this is amazing for college hockey. It is and it's made it. You know, it's definitely above that now. But as an American kid, it is like, wow, American kids are, are kind of get going to get crushed here a little bit because every good Canadian player is going with CHL and then ncaa.

Yeah, they'll get. Maybe they'll get pushed out a little.

They need more teams.

Like, you get treated just as good as you are in the NHL. At Michigan, they give you meals. You know, you get game day meal. Game day meals, chef. The night before, you know, you. The money you get for your rent and food is. Is like a party. Yeah. But you, you just get treated so

and you're going. You're getting a great education, too. You're going to Michigan University. Great education and just so much fun. So, like, you kind of have like the trifecta. And all the sports are good.

So, like, it's not just hockey. You got. Got basketball doing well, you got football doing well. Like, so it's fun. You get to go, like, see these guys and watch them play. And now you're watching them in the NFL or in the NBA. Like, that's pretty sweet.

The Big Ten is in a great spot for hockey and they have all the money.

They got the dough Now, I don't think you're. Everyone's making the decision based on just the money for college hockey.

Going into your junior year and you got a big recruiting class, you didn't play sophomore year, it's like, all right, I want. But the every year thing is.

The every year thing just takes all, like. Like the. The culture out of.

Like, it needs to. I agree with you. One's fine. Like, yeah, okay, you're in a bad situation. Like, you. We don't want. Or you don't want your career to get screwed over because maybe you don't like the. The coach doesn't like you or, you know, maybe it's just you're not getting the opportunity at the school you are now. You go to a lesser school and now you're doing great, and now you have a chance to make sure. Right. That's great. But the moving every year is just way too much.

In my opinion.

Was it just going back to, like, your first year and being in college? And I remember I. I was with Hazy after his first year and.

Yeah.

Like, was it a tough transition for you? Because it seems like in college, like, you guys are always with each other 24 7. Right. And I remember Hazy always having to have someone around him. Just like a guy. Was tough for you going into the NHL like that?

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, that was a little tough. For sure. That's why I love being home so much. Just because you guys got people around all the time. Right. Just attacks, play golf, do whatever. But I had a roommate my first two and a half years was Will Borg, and he got traded to the Rangers. So that was tough. Right. That's a good dose of, like, what the pros is like. All right, this is my best buddy.

Gone.

[Maddie Beniers]

Gone the next day. Just don't even say goodbye. But yeah, no, I like having. I like having people around. It's nice. It helps so much. And you're right. It's so different. Like. Like after practice at Michigan, we'd all get in the same room and, you know, go to the hockey house, and we go watch TV or we all go play Xbox or, like, do nothing. Just together. Right now, you're in pro. You live thousands of miles away from your family, and it's like you got. They all your buddies got families. All your buddies got wives and girlfriends, and you're kind of like, all right, what am I. What am I doing now? So you kind of got to figure out what you find some things you like to do outside the rink, you know, keep yourself busy. I got a house in Seattle now, so that kind of keeps me busy. I, like, take care of that.

[Biz]

Yeah.

[Maddie Beniers]

Make sure everything's okay and, you know, do a little, like, cooking on the side when it's. When I'm home alone, or I'll go to dinners. I'll try new restaurants. Like, just, like. You got to find something to do, because otherwise, if you're there alone, it's just.

What's that city like? Like, Boston? Is it like. Like good restaurants?

[Biz]

Fun little pockets, right?

[Maddie Beniers]

There are fun pockets. Yeah, it's good. Really good restaurants. It's definitely bigger than here is.

It's a little bit more spread out.

There's a lot going on. Yeah. Like Bellevue. Like, y. There is. I. I live on, like, on Vancouver Island.

So, like, they got the Gulf Islands, and then you guys have, like, the Roche harbor and all those little islands. And then you can go in that little pocket, there's a bunch of Nash. I don't know if you're into hiking, but there's a bunch of national forests and beautiful mountains there.

The outdoor stuff is awesome. It's just. We haven't gotten to do a ton of it.

Because I'm not there in the summers, but, like, they have a lot of stuff to do. When it gets a little bit nicer out, It's. It's a little rainy sometimes, but. But the golf there is great, so that's. That's awesome. Golf's great. The restaurants are really awesome. There's, like, some night life. Not a ton, but there's some.

It's a bit of a sleepy town. Vancouver doesn't have great nightlife either, but

yeah, I mean, you're on the road so much. Like, it doesn't totally matter.

the summer right now? I think Schwarz is staying there. He's having a kid, so he's staying there a little bit. Alexia used to stay, and Grubauer used to stay a little bit, but there's not like that's what they're trying to build up there is. It's not like Boston rare. The Boston guy, the Bees guys who stay. They have players.

Well, 15 more players. Probably more. 20, 25 players around that are just like Boston guys.

So they can skate with us. They can skate with.

Oh, it's more of like a resources and having got.

Yeah, you need people to skate with and train with. If you're in Seattle, you're kind of all alone. Like, there's not.

Yeah. There's not that big hockey community there. They're just like, just starting it.

You guys have to do a lot of stuff with the youth because I remember talking with like donor when the team first went to Phoenix. Like, they had basically had to start the youth programs and show up and be at those.

They would do a lot of like, community stuff. That's a big, you know, importance of our ownership group and. And the guys in the team are great about it. Like, everyone wants to be involved and. And like you said, like, there's just not that much hockey around. So it's finding ways to like, get people into it and, you know, you get kids more excited. We go to schools all the time. You know, we do hospital visits, all these different things to. Just to show your support and then also show them your sport a little bit. Because it's like not even.

There'll be. There'll be, you know, 15 years from now. There'll be some players coming up.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah.

Hopefully. Look at. Look at Matthews after Coyotes come. I know it's years later, but when you look back on like your year, this year, the past couple years, what. What is like Lane Lambert tell you, like, this needs to be better. Obviously you talk about like just getting like stronger. Like, is there anything else that you're really focused on? Yeah, I think you have the skill and you have the speed. Right. So it's like, what's next? I think.

[Maddie Beniers]

I think it's just like a little bit more like taking some more offensive risks. Like, I definitely am. You know, I try to be a two way player. That's always been kind of my game, playing the game the right way. But I think there's some more areas for me to grow on, like the offensive side of the puck. Maybe take us more chances, you know, trying to take guys a little bit more one on one, taking guys wide a little bit more. Just being, you know, maybe a little bit More selfish with the puck. Sometimes shooting. Shooting the puck a little bit more. So it's kind of the offensive side of things. And, and I think I'm, you know, I think I, I liked my year this year. I thought, I thought as a team it was, you know, we didn't finish where we wanted to, but as the first 3/4 of it was pretty good. And for myself, I liked, I liked my game throughout. And so it's just like continuing to build in those areas, whether it's like my face offs, my, you know, defensive play.

[Maddie Beniers]

Was that something you'd like?

Something I'd love to do.

Yeah. I don't do it.

It. I block a bunch of shots, so I have to, I'd love to, but yeah, no PK and then like getting more productive on the power play too. Like that's, you know, you see so many guys who have. They get to the 80, the 90, the 100 points. Yeah, that's where that comes from.

Is the power play points that extra 20.

[Wit]

Yeah. Because you're at. You had 57 and then 50 this year and like, so it's like getting to 70ish, right?

65. 70, 75. Like that's where that growth comes, I think is the power play and you know, maybe sneak in a couple more empty netters for myself. I don't know. But I, I don't think I had any this year.

I had zero my whole career.

It's a thing. If you look a lot of guys, they probably get, I don't know, six to ten points a year. Empty net goals. You got to win a lot of games to get them. I ate the minuses trying to tie it up.

And never got any pluses or points. We did the math.

I think I have a hundred empty net. Yeah, we did empty in my career. We looked it up at one point.

You got to look up actually when you're, when we're done with this, look up how many ABs had their first year. I think it was an outrageous amount. Minuses on empty. Like the Kraken very first year.

Yeah. He was minus 28. When he gets 2 in one game,

when you get 2, when they score, when the coach empties the net again, you're like, no, no, no. But for you, like with like you're a defensive minded.

You play a 200 foot game.

So now like we talked to Bergeron early and he, he was talking about just the little things in his game. Not Worrying about the points, just taking care of the minor details. But coming in as a young guy, being good in the defensive zone now you can probably focus more on the offensive side.

[Maddie Beniers]

Yeah, you get. You definitely get a little bit more of a rope, a little bit more leeway. You gain confidence. Like, the, you know, the mental side of the game is just as important. So that's. That part of the game. You start to get more comfortable in the NHL. You still get to get more comfortable going against, you know, harder matchups and 23, dude. Yeah, you get. You find ways to, like, produce in those. In those areas while also still trying to, like, shut guys down. So. Yeah, no, it's been good. I mean, I really like, you know, really liked Lane in the staff this year, and, you know, I think they're very intelligent and do a really good job and, you know, it'll be nice. Like you said, we've had different coaches every year. Year that can be good, but also can be tough because you're kind of trying to get the lay of the land with your new coaches. So it'll be nice this year coming in. And we kind of already have a plan in place, and now it's like, building instead of, like, restarting, for sure.

Yeah, yeah. What. What about hardest hit You've taken four years in now.

Like, I mean, describe that to a young guy maybe coming up, like, how. How much harder it is. And, like, it's not even, like, you can escape it where you're like, oh, we got, like a, you know, a couple. Couple easy ones coming up. Like the league. It's like there's so much parody, especially being in the Pacific Division. Like, you might have McDavid and Dryle one night, and then going into play against, like, Vegas where you have jack eel. Pretty hard, man.

Yeah, no, it's tough. I mean, it's a lot of games this year was crazy to be completely

every other night with the break.

Playing 17 games in a month was outrageous. And I know A lot of teams did it. I don't know if everyone did it, but I know that month was just

like, that's like two or three back to backs. And other than that, every other night.

Every other night, there's no two in between a game. Like you're on the road, like you said, like you're gonna say travel.

Like for our travel is the worst.

Like by the time August hits, guys are skating four times a week anyways, like, you're ready to go for camp and then you're on the side on Wednesday grinding a two mile bike or a mile bike, you know, three times. Whatever your testing is just so you can like pass the test. Yeah, that's all, that's literally all it is. You're training for that test, so I think it's great. No testing. And I also like how we're doing. Just, we're kind of just getting right into it this year.

Yeah, it's like we play, I think, think more than 100 games. You play two. You can only play two games max. And so we're going to play two games and then it's going to be like right into it.

It did like a kind of a deep dive and you know, is basically his family history and why he's been depressed and writes the songs he does and you know, like, sort of like issues he's gone through. Like his, you know, body type and all that stuff I could kind of relate to. I definitely related to the guy a lot more than I thought. Not necessarily musically, but it was a great documentary. You already missed. It was the car Carnival cruise. The carnival celebration. Like, it already left. But we can put you on the holiday because. Because the currents. They have to leave and catch the currents to make all the ports a call. And we got there, but only two of us had our luggage. And I'm like, buddy, I just took out us too long ago on this cruise. You. I don't care about clothes. If you guys want to get on, I'll see us there. So we all end up getting on the boat, but we gotta like. It wasn't like the gangway like the Love Boat where everyone's waving to you. They had to like sneak us in a side door. So basically there were eight of us in each port of call. Me, my mother, my brother though we go up for the whole duration. Then my, my niece, her boyfriend come up. My, A couple of my uncles are going to come up. So, you know, like we, we used to only do it for a week, but we're doing two weeks this year because last year we were like, I could easily do another week here. So.

We take a day trip over from where we stay of a month and it's about an 80 minute trip. What's great about it, it's all the back road, so you don't even have to get on any highways at all. It's just a beautiful scenic ride through all this sort of upstate New York Farmland. And yeah, we make a day trip there and maybe try to hit a few breweries this year because we're staying for a little bit longer. But yeah, basically just waiting for that. Jeopardy's in repeats now. So that was my, my one show I pretty much watch every night is repeat time. So yeah, just kind of call the minutes to get to get up to Vermont and enjoy a little vacay with the fam.

We had a house for years. It was not like a winterized house but obviously we're in the summer so it didn't matter but it was, the guy ended up selling it. So we get it like an old fashioned cabin now which is actually like what you call rustic which I actually like more than the house. It's just. You feel like you're in Vermont more. It's like right on a lake, Keith. And it's not like over developed. It's not even really developed at all. It's a lot of year year rounders and a few people go up for the summer so it's very quiet. We just sort of go up and honestly it's just the ultimate decompression. It's just like there's not even a TV in the house. There's kid, there's Internet and stuff but just kind of go up, unwind, you know, eat, drink and be merry basically.
