Yeah, it's a great. Where the pack rim in Vancouver is on the corner where that whale is. The. Like, the fake whale. North Vancouver. And it's huge. It's like a size of a Costco. They could probably seat 400 people in there. And there was a couple guys in there, and one of them on the way down told me he was from Thunder Bay. One other guy through the glass near the kitchen. I end up going later on the week to a restaurant called Nightingale that my buddy David Hawksworth owns, that Kevin BXA put me in touch with. And sure enough, I walked in. Those two guys from Thunder Bay were there again. Same two guys sitting right there as soon as I walked in. So we've been getting the pinkies up. Attacks going quite a bit through North America.

Oh, it's like going to Vegas two nights. See you later. Like, don't want to see it for another year. So he goes there for like eight, nine days. I don't even think they had a ticket or anything planned. And sure enough, they end up getting like brought around. They're in this box, that box. Tickets to this. They're at Ella Langley. All of a sudden he's meeting her backstage, meeting this guy backstage. Then he flies all the way. I think he went back to Toronto. He was there less than 24 hours and then off to Pei Prince.

Like, go to see your kids. He's like, no, I just had to do some laundry. Didn't even talk.
Biz
He just had to do. No, his wife had to do it.

Imagine doing his laundry.
Biz
Oh, just G strings and half. Half crop tops. And then off the PI. And then he went from PI right over to. To BC and he like, he. I think he was sleeping on memes buddy's couch for a few days. And then of course over to Jeff's birthday, which was a riot, obviously a lot of people. There was like 140 people that ended up showing up. He did it at a. He'd been to a concert before, the Arkels, big Canadian band. I think they got like 220 people in for the Arkels concert. And he went and saw it. So he's like, oh, that's a cool venue. It's an old strip club. It used to be a supper club. Turned in a strip club. It's a pretty clean strip club on the inside, surprisingly. And then he got a dj. And then, like I said, it was just booked out for all of us and our friends, 140 of us. So everybody showed up. It was a great time and celebrated. Celebrated him in style, man. Well, well deserved.

No, Jeff. Jeff wrote the speech.

Jeff gave it to himself. No. So we had. So you got to keep in mind, like all the people there, like, Jeff went to like high school with. So they know Jeff even more so than I do. So I, like, I'm not a big speech guy. I called Jeff, obviously, beforehand, like, and. And always tell him how appreciative I am of him and, like, how much I love him. Obviously, like, took care of the dj, like, helped him out and said, hey, here, happy birthday. I don't know. Do you think that's weird that I didn't give him a speech?

No, no. I. I was gonna be surprised if you did, but I thought the moment might have just kind of overtaken you and you're like, I just want to address everyone.

Tang up with the people that I know north of the border. So now I'm in Victoria for the. Basically the rest of summer. And yeah, I'm excited to just kind of get some downtime here.

Well, I took his golf clubs when we landed in Boston, so That he didn't have to then bring them to Baltimore, where he was going, so you'd have to lug them around Baltimore, you know? So I was like, I'll take him home now. Part of that was shipping it to him. That was. That was. That was eight days ago. It's one of those things where you just got to do it, right? Like, I have a problem of, like, I got to do this. Well, why haven't I done it? No reason.

Why I aggressively press the button without an answer is a question I'll ask myself till the end of time. The problem with me doing that game is I'm not that quick on my feet in terms of, like, when the lights are at their brightest. You've seen double overtime, hockey's championship game, put own net to lose, Stanley cup finals, you know, didn't play great. Olympic gold medal game minus one. Didn't see another shift. When the lights are the brightest, do I show up? Not necessarily. Family feud wasn't for me. But I still just don't know why I wanted to win that race against Ace. Flag. Talk about the wrong name. He should have been named Cooper, and I think Cooper should have been named Ace because he got crushed in the department of being born second and then looking like that.

Like you're also trying to win, so you're trying to maybe leave a little bit more on the table for other guys on the team or for more signings to come. I think it's fucking crazy. If he was offered that deal and he didn't sign it for, for, for, for, for what? For what are we talking here? And now he signs a one year deal. My understanding also is they had a few, one or two other trades for him to even go places, but he's not willing to go and sign there either. Like, this is the last year we can do this. We're aging out.

And then I was like, all right, now I'm like sweating out there. I'm running back and forth and you're rattled. Yeah, I was rattled.

No, he was the year I left, so he was actually. No.

Yeah. I was in Michigan by the time he was there. My family kind of knew his parents because his mom went out with him to Michigan, and my mom did the same, and I kind of, like, knew of him. And then probably, like, two, three years ago, we started, like, skating together in the summers, working out, kind of had a good time together. And then I think I started. I used to live with Berard in the summers. The guys with the Rangers, I kind of down. And then he went back to Providence, and then I like living with someone, and Smitty kind of needed someone to live with him in Boston, so it worked out well.

What is the routine like in the summer? Because we talk a lot how guys are on their skates all summer. We never did that. Are you skating now pretty constantly, or.
Maddie Beniers
No, not yet. No. Okay. More like my biggest thing is, you know, getting bigger. And so for me, like, going on the ice at this point probably wouldn't be the smartest thing for me, at least. But it's different for every guy. Like, Smitty's probably skating twice a week right now, maybe a little bit more. For me, it's like, all weight room until probably next week. And then I'll get back on the ice and start doing like two, three times a week.

July is early enough.

Oh, for sure. I just said that was one of the things I regretted the most is I wish I would have just. Just not even to like bag myself in conditioning. It was more about just staying on your edges.

Yeah, well, I did that last summer too, where like I went to Worlds and then by the time I was back, everyone's already skating. And I was like, oh, I gotta. Yeah, I gotta skate now because everyone. Everyone in the gym skating. So I didn't really have that much time off last summer.

We were in Denmark. Herning, Denmark. In the middle of nowhere. There was like one bar. I actually have a funny one from that. Probably one of the most like demoralizing moments of all time. We just are in the round robin. We were playing pretty well too, and we got shelled by Switzerland on a back to back. We played them. You would have thought these guys were Wayne Gretzky out there skating around us.

It was the Russians in a Switzerland jersey.
Maddie Beniers
Unbelievable. I was like, what is. We were all like, what is going on? And so we finished the game and like, you know, I don't think we had anything the next day. So we were like, all right, we're gonna go center town and eat some food and have a couple beers. I don't know. And we get there and the entire. Every single Switzerland fan that was in Denmark was in on this street. And they started. They all stood up. We walked right through the middle. All of them. They all stood up and started like doing this chant. It was like we had basically laughing at you. Oh, it was so embarrassing. Oh, I think I went home after that. They sent me home. I was like, I'm go to bed. Yeah, let me play them in the finals.
Wit
Okay. All right. So, yeah, payback.
Maddie Beniers
Yeah, we got a little payback there. But yeah, it was, it was a great time. I, I would definitely go back. Yeah.

This year just kind of didn't feel it.
Maddie Beniers
Yeah, this year just wasn't. Yeah, I just wanted to get home and train. Yeah, that was kind of the biggest thing for me this summer was like, I gotta get bigger. You know, you look at a lot of, you know, sentiment around the league. You know something, they're, they're bigger, they're stronger guys that helps them with, you know, in the corners and draws, you know, just like shutting down other guys as well. So that was, for me, that's kind of like my next.
Biz
It's, it's a fine line though because you're trying to like gain weight and gain size, but yet the game, it seems like year over year it just keeps getting faster and faster. So how do you kind of find that balance of like what do you do for workouts and how are you, how do you, how do you feel that you're like kind of retaining the weight?
Maddie Beniers
Yeah, it's just like putting on more muscle. It's not really like I don't want like a belly, you know, like. No, but yeah, it's just like putting on more muscle and I do think that for myself as well, like putting on more muscle. Yeah, it's going to give me more weight, but also it's going to make me faster.
Biz
Right.
Maddie Beniers
More having more muscle in my legs and my butt. Like, like those areas are just, they're gonna help my skating as well. So for me it's kind of which is your strength already, which is one of my strengths. So kind of a double edged sword. That's why I was like, I can't, I can't go this year and kind of just went right back home and just got in the way room.

So what, like what are you up like 5, 10 pounds already?
Maddie Beniers
I lose a lot during the year, so I'm probably up like 8 to 10 already.

Another like 8, 8 to 10 after that.

Like over the course of a game. Like do you weigh yourself before and after?
Maddie Beniers
Usually before and after a game? Not necessarily, but I'll lose like after a practice, like probably three or four pounds.

And mostly water weight, but you just gotta like pound water and get it back.
Biz
We, I, I remember playing with guys where they would lose 10 pounds over the course of the game. Because they just leak, so.
Maddie Beniers
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Especially our. Our goalies, I think, had that issue for a while, but yeah, it is. It is so annoying. I would rather have. Probably have in my situation than the other way of not being able to lose it.

Yeah, that's the tough.

What is. How has it been as far as coming in where an organization is pretty much new to, like, the changes over the past, like, four years since you've been there? Like, is it. Is it. You know, obviously getting used to a new city, but, like, they're getting used to having an NHL team and maybe changing things and doing things differently.
Maddie Beniers
Yeah. Well, we're pretty fortunate. Like, they love sports in Seattle. Love it.

Yeah, they love sports, regardless of what sport it is. Seahawks there, they don't necessarily. They're starting to understand it now, but there were definitely some times in, like, the first year, the second year, like, a goal gets called back and they're, like, still going nuts, and you're like.

That one didn't count. But no, they've. That's been great. The organization is unbelievable. Like, the way we get treated is.

You know, you look at. God, she look at Detroit, too. Like, obviously, there's all that stuff going on right now, but, like, they were in a playoff spot for almost the entire year.

I mean, so. And I think we got enough veteran presence to, like, you know, get us over that edge of, like, okay, we put ourselves in a great spot this year. To make it now, the last 20 games, you gotta just like, make sure you're. You're winning. You're just playing winning hockey, like, that's all that matters at that point.

No, not. But, like, you talk. No bringing in veteran guys like Brandon Montour comes over, guys like that who have won. Like, if you're not used to a coach, like, you got to have the guys in the locker room who are helping out. And I know you've been around four years. I'm sure you're a leader, too. But having those veteran guys must be huge in being in Seattle. Getting those guys to come there is huge as well.

Yeah, no, having those guys are. Is huge. You know, guys that have been in playoffs, you know, won cops. You know, we have, you know, Schwarzi in there. We had Montour, you know, Vince D. We got a lot of guys that have Stevenson. We got a bunch of guys that have won it, that have done it, that know how to do it. You Know, I think the organization also. I think part of the reason why we've had different coaches is, like, they want to win now, and that's pretty important to them. I think our, you know, our ownership group and, you know, management group is trying to be as aggressive as possible and, like, get new people, get new guys. So I think that could be a potential reason for the turnover as well as, you know, the lack of success throughout the. Throughout the team or the team, you know, not doing as well as we should have. So, yeah, it's tough. It's tough year to year, but. But, you know, it was pretty promising last year. I. I think we. We had a really good team. We. We did a good enough job to hopefully make it in. We didn't make it in, and, you know, hopefully next year we do.

And then we had a lot of young guys coming in. Like, my class was a lot of young guys that, like, probably took hockey a little bit more on the serious side and, like, didn't love going out. But it was a great mesh of, like, the older guys kind of forced us all out. The young guys all listened and went out. Like, we didn't have one. One post game where, like, we didn't have everybody there ever. Not once. Not once. Regardless of if you drank, if you didn't drink at all, like, you just had to be there. And we were all there all the time, and we had a blast doing it. Oh, my gosh, was it fun, Rex?

I love. I mean it's great for college hockey. I think. It's rightfully so. Like I think college. We would always have these debates like Canadian Junior league versus college. I don't even think it's close to be honest game.

But it does suck now. And I went on when they made the rule of CHL to you to ncaa and I was like, this is amazing for college hockey. It is and it's made it. You know, it's definitely above that now. But as an American kid, it is like, wow, American kids are, are kind of get going to get crushed here a little bit because every good Canadian player is going with CHL and then ncaa.

You know, we do hospital visits, all these different things to. Just to show your support and then also show them your sport a little bit. Because it's like not even.

Yeah, I think you have the skill and you have the speed. Right. So it's like, what's next? I think.

I think it's just like a little bit more like taking some more offensive risks. Like, I definitely am. You know, I try to be a two way player. That's always been kind of my game, playing the game the right way. But I think there's some more areas for me to grow on, like the offensive side of the puck. Maybe take us more chances, you know, trying to take guys a little bit more one on one, taking guys wide a little bit more. Just being, you know, maybe a little bit More selfish with the puck. Sometimes shooting. Shooting the puck a little bit more. So it's kind of the offensive side of things. And, and I think I'm, you know, I think I, I liked my year this year. I thought, I thought as a team it was, you know, we didn't finish where we wanted to, but as the first 3/4 of it was pretty good. And for myself, I liked, I liked my game throughout. And so it's just like continuing to build in those areas, whether it's like my face offs, my, you know, defensive play.

So now like we talked to Bergeron early and he, he was talking about just the little things in his game. Not Worrying about the points, just taking care of the minor details. But coming in as a young guy, being good in the defensive zone now you can probably focus more on the offensive side.

Yeah, you get. You definitely get a little bit more of a rope, a little bit more leeway. You gain confidence. Like, the, you know, the mental side of the game is just as important. So that's. That part of the game. You start to get more comfortable in the NHL. You still get to get more comfortable going against, you know, harder matchups and 23, dude. Yeah, you get. You find ways to, like, produce in those. In those areas while also still trying to, like, shut guys down. So. Yeah, no, it's been good. I mean, I really like, you know, really liked Lane in the staff this year, and, you know, I think they're very intelligent and do a really good job and, you know, it'll be nice. Like you said, we've had different coaches every year. Year that can be good, but also can be tough because you're kind of trying to get the lay of the land with your new coaches. So it'll be nice this year coming in. And we kind of already have a plan in place, and now it's like, building instead of, like, restarting, for sure.

I know you guys saw talking about the Noah Khan show a few weeks ago though, you guys, that went. I checked out that documentary on Netflix out of Body. Like. Like some. His music. I get it. I get the appeal and it's just not necessarily my cup of tea. But the documentary was great, man. It did like a kind of a deep dive and you know, is basically his family history and why he's been depressed and writes the songs he does and you know, like, sort of like issues he's gone through. Like his, you know, body type and all that stuff I could kind of relate to. I definitely related to the guy a lot more than I thought. Not necessarily musically, but it was a great documentary. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Also too that. Remember that conquer Costa Concordia boat that ran agrounded Italy a few years ago? Like it just basically gets stuck on the rocks and was. I'd be there. And we ended up missing our boat, like, because like, we couldn't fly into Atlanta. We. It was like the weather, like, delayed everything. So we get there and like, listen, you. You already missed. It was the car Carnival cruise. The carnival celebration. Like, it already left. But we can put you on the holiday because. Because the currents. They have to leave and catch the currents to make all the ports a call. And we got there, but only two of us had our luggage. And I'm like, buddy, I just took out us too long ago on this cruise. You. I don't care about clothes. If you guys want to get on, I'll see us there. So we all end up getting on the boat, but we gotta like. It wasn't like the gangway like the Love Boat where everyone's waving to you. They had to like sneak us in a side door. So basically there were eight of us in each port of call. One of my buddies would get his luggage. So like, over the course of like the week, you could see we all have each other's clothes on. If you look at all the pictures, but.

Boys. It's been kind of a. What Of a chill summer. I don't do my family trip for another couple weeks, so I just been kind of weak counting the minutes to, to go up to Vermont for my, like I said, my end trip.

He goes by himself, calls it a family trip on a cruise. What. How many people are going on this family trip?

Me, my mother, my brother though we go up for the whole duration. Then my, my niece, her boyfriend come up. My, A couple of my uncles are going to come up. So, you know, like we, we used to only do it for a week, but we're doing two weeks this year because last year we were like, I could easily do another week here. So.

Yeah, this is where I saw you in Saratoga years before the show even began.

Yeah, yeah, we. Yeah, yeah, we shared the one on the way out. Yeah, I think that was the second time we met. Yeah, we. Good, Good call. We take a day trip over from where we stay of a month and it's about an 80 minute trip. What's great about it, it's all the back road, so you don't even have to get on any highways at all. It's just a beautiful scenic ride through all this sort of upstate New York Farmland. And yeah, we make a day trip there and maybe try to hit a few breweries this year because we're staying for a little bit longer. But yeah, basically just waiting for that. Jeopardy's in repeats now. So that was my, my one show I pretty much watch every night is repeat time. So yeah, just kind of call the minutes to get to get up to Vermont and enjoy a little vacay with the fam.

We had a house for years. It was not like a winterized house but obviously we're in the summer so it didn't matter but it was, the guy ended up selling it. So we get it like an old fashioned cabin now which is actually like what you call rustic which I actually like more than the house. It's just. You feel like you're in Vermont more. It's like right on a lake, Keith. And it's not like over developed. It's not even really developed at all. It's a lot of year year rounders and a few people go up for the summer so it's very quiet. We just sort of go up and honestly it's just the ultimate decompression. It's just like there's not even a TV in the house. There's kid, there's Internet and stuff but just kind of go up, unwind, you know, eat, drink and be merry basically.

I try, I try, I, I try with. I bring books up and it's been a struggle man. It's like these, these MFs, man, they're so goddamn addicted. It's just I, I try to check it. I've been trying to read even like recently just try to focus on, just get, recalibrate my brain a little bit just to like read books again because I used to be a voracious reader. So yeah, I'll bring a handful of books up and hopefully just throw the phone in the lake for a little bit, see what happens.
