Me and Ryan have been officially welcomed to the jungle that is Barstool Sports.
Biz
I brought it towards the coyotes and I asked him if it was okay if I joined the Spit Chickens podcast full time.
Whitney
Ryan Whitney's got a pink Whitney out there now. The song man is a full time member. My religious galaxy got an assist from Chris.
Keith
Whoa. We're buzzing right now.
Whitney
What is up folks? Welcome back to spitting Chiclets episode 663. We're getting up there. Patrice Bergeron joined us back. Heard of him in Boston for the cup finals. This is a great interview. I think everyone's going to enjoy it.
Biz
Boston.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. The bees.
Whitney
The bees. He's a big part of their. Their history, their biz. So Patrice Bergeron's coming on Pink Whitney. You got to shut out the pinkies up. Pinkies up from Macklin Celebrini. We're going to get into that monster deal and pinkies up for what he did to me on the golf course. Get into that in a second. But either way, it's Pinky's up. So I'm not going to get upset and rattled when I'm talking. Pink Whitney. Shout out everyone out there who's buying some.
Biz
Were you helping him negotiate?
Whitney
Yeah, I was a big part of it. Yeah. It wasn't even his agent. It was me. I didn't tell you that. Yeah. I don't know, though. I don't. I don't. He didn't show me much. What's the word? He didn't show much gratitude towards me, though, on the course, I'll say that. But I do have one big announcement here before. Before we get going. Chiclet's cup is. Is locked and loaded. Now we're back in Boston. The registration goes on sale. For anyone who wants to be a part of this Wednesday at noon Eastern, go to BarstoolSports.com Heartbroom Brewery again. Place was phenomenal the last time we went. Perfect setup. So we're going to do that again Wednesday, August 5, 12 Eastern. That's noon Eastern. Barstoolsports.com we got no bull. Reese's Pink Whitney coming in. Harpoon Brewery. Thursday will be the welcome party and the registration. Friday is the event. Day one Pink Whitney party. Pinkies up that night. Saturday, the day two of the event. Closing ceremonies, 5pm at Hartroom Brewery, where we'll be on the mic biz. We try to. We try to give our flowers to all the winning teams. Unfortunately, every year you're coming off. You're coming off of a loss. And then, like, sitting up there like wounded, bleeding, like, oh, we lost again. Here's your trophy.
Biz
Ra's cabs or RA Shins.
Whitney
That was amazing. RA came back last year. He fell over the barrier. We'll have to ask him about that. I don't know if we've ever brought that up to him. And then was up there just leaking blood all over the stage. I was like, Whoa, welcome back, R.A. here we go. But I don't know what you guys are up to. We're getting ready. Got a big week here.
Biz
The final announcement, I think. I think it's going to be the big deal. Selects last dance. It's going to be our last dance.
Whitney
Win or lose, you're done.
Biz
I think it's going to be the last dance.
Yan
You say that every year, you motherfucker.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, every year you say Mike Keane.
Yan
Every year you fucking say this.
Biz
We Just interviewed Mike Keane. Yan's is making a joke. This guy played 1100 games in the NHL and then played 5 years in the AHL to end his career.
Whitney
And wasn't floating around the outside either. He was like grinding in your face in front of the net. Those five years in the Myers. That was a great interview. That'll be coming out in a couple weeks. Biz, how is vacation started with the parents?
Biz
Yeah, yeah, it started yesterday, the first full day. And it was a tough one, boys.
Keith
Oh, no.
Biz
So on. If you've watched. If you watch the BC peaking season, we go to a place called We Peeking. We Peeking. The next one's coming out, I think early September. That's going to be the Lake Havasu one. But we went to this place called Coombs where they have this like, you know, outdoor. They got the, the, like all the beautiful fruits and vegetables are locally grown. You can go into the. One of the supermarkets. It's got like every kind of cheese and all these unreal homemade pepperoni sticks, beef jerky pastries. Like, like this apple strudel. I can even show you. Like, look at this apple strudel.
Whitney
Apple strudels are phenomenal.
Patrice Bergeron
Like, look at that.
Whitney
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Keith
Seen better. I've seen better.
Whitney
So have I. Not even trying to be a dick, you can't see much of the apple. Like there's too much crust in the top of that thing.
Biz
Oh, you guys are.
Whitney
This vacation's doomed.
Keith
Yeah, that looks store bought. But go ahead.
Biz
That's what was bought. But it was definitely. Okay. So we go in there, we had a great, a great lunch. They went on a little bit of a tour beforehand. I had already been on this tour with Donnie to see all these old trees, trees that go up to about 800 years old. So they actually had a tour guide. So he was driving them around before that. So I met them at Coombs. Okay, Because I got my sister, her kids, my dad, so there's six of them. So we finish off at this place. It's got the, the goats on the roof. Remember when I said. Yeah, yeah, that place. So I, I'm parked probably 15 minutes down the road. 15 minute walk because it's packed, you know, it's like the, the high season here. So I got to walk that way. So I give him a kiss. I say, hey, I'll see you at the hotel. Okay. All right, great, you know, great. Great afternoon. So I walk towards my car. I stop at this little antique shop just to take a few peeks. Inside. And then as I get to my car, I get a text from my sister, and she goes, well, we're on our way to the.
Whitney
The.
Biz
The. Like, whatever. The icu.
Whitney
What we're going.
Biz
Mom fell down, and she's got to get stitches. So. Buddy. Buddy. The minute I must have said bye to them, they're walking up to go meet where their ride was picking them up. And they got these speed bumps, but the speed bumps aren't colored yellow. They're the same color gravel as the road.
Whitney
You got to. You got to make sure people can see that that's a speed.
Patrice Bergeron
Bu.
Biz
You got to make sure you could see.
Keith
This could be a nice little law.
Whitney
There's a law in the United States.
Keith
She slipped on a strudel.
Biz
So she toe picks on the speed bump. Buddy goes down. Even the hands couldn't stop her.
Patrice Bergeron
Boom.
Biz
Right on the corner of her eye. We're off to the. To the ICU unit or whatever the you call eight zips in the corner right here. Eight zips for Yoli, Buddy. I'll tell you what, though. Not yet. Not yet. But she was a trooper. She was cracking jokes, chirping herself, even when we were signing in with the. With the nurse and stuff like that. So a couple clicks for Yoli, first day of vacation.
Whitney
Kidding me.
Keith
Breaking in the new feet.
Biz
Yeah,
Whitney
that's.
Biz
That's a Hitchcock going, guys firing pucks at her on the ice. When she got out there, Buddy just ate in front of everybody. There's probably a hundred people there just, like, having a chuckle at Yoli's expense.
Whitney
No, no, no. You see somebody fall like that, you're. You got to be a real piece of scum to be laughing at that. There has to go, and, you know. You know, Canada, they're all running to help her. They're all friendly. Yeah, I thought you were. Say, one of the goats from the roof fell off and hit her. That's tough.
Keith
That would have been better. Yeah.
Biz
Then we would really would have got some money out of this, maybe.
Whitney
Like, I could have got security footage of that. I could have sold an ad on that video.
Keith
Did you. Did you have to drive her? Did you have to drive back up and pick them up to take them to the hospital?
Biz
No. By the time I got the text, when I was. By the way, their phone service was absolutely brutal at this place, so I got the text, so she just sent me where they went, and I drove down the road. It was like, 10 minutes away, and they were already there kind of checking in, so spent you know, two, two and a half hours there waiting for her to get stitched up or whatever it was, and. And then on. On she went. But hey, man, Trooper, she was up today buzzing around, all good to go, so.
Whitney
Okay.
Biz
No, Conky's a tough customer, man.
Whitney
Yeah, that's where you get it from.
Biz
Yeah, you always a tough cut. You got Irish Traveler by the Goats at the At Coombs. So that was the start to our vacation. But after this, I'm going to mini putt and I'm. We're gonna. I'm gonna go play against my sister's kids and her husband.
Whitney
Show no mercy on these kids.
Biz
Zero mercy, buddy. I told them yesterday at lunch, I said, you know, I'm bringing my own putter, right? Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gonna dust you guys. And they're like, oh, handy. What's the handicap? I'm like, you ain't getting nothing over there.
Whitney
If there's one thing you can do in the game of golf too, it's pot.
Biz
That's it.
Whitney
Pot. Everyone saw in the most recent bagger with the Bob does sports boys, the collared boys, taking them for a walk. You, you were reading the greens. We. We decide. You are our guy. Putting our guy. Thank you.
Keith
How. How old are her kids?
Biz
10? Yeah. 10 years old.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
That's old enough to like. Yeah.
Keith
Take them to the woodshed.
Biz
Oh, yeah. Well, they're. They're. They're twins, right. But one boy, one girl. So they're. They're probably going to be working together. They're always attached at the hip. This is last year was the first year. They didn't do their, like, their grade together. They split them the classes. So these two work very well together. Okay, I'll be, I'll be. I'll be ready to go. But that's it, boys. Just getting a little bit of R and R here on the island. And what about you guys? What do you got going?
Whitney
Yeah, I saw the odds.
Keith
Same, same.
Whitney
What'd you think?
Keith
Loved it. I was in. I was not had. Did not have the best setup. I was at the, you know. Have you been to the movie theater here in Nantucket?
Whitney
No, it's. Is it small?
Keith
No, it's a great movie theater, but then there's like a separate one that's just basically like a screen that comes down and then just regular chairs. And that's where we were at for the Odyssey.
Whitney
So they didn't get the big theater. The Odyssey wasn't in the big theater.
Keith
Not sure why they were playing Young Washington instead of the Odyssey in that one.
Biz
But don't even.
Patrice Bergeron
I thought the movie.
Keith
Exactly. I thought the movie was insane. I know we talked a little bit before about how much AIDS is actually in it. That was incredible.
Biz
Him or
Whitney
you see him 30 times or more in the movie.
Ra
He.
Biz
Is it weird, normal teeth or did they kind of darken them up? Because it'd be weird if a guy had such nice teeth at that.
Ra
He said.
Keith
Didn't he tell us that the producer told him he to never show his teeth? Didn't he say that to us?
Whitney
He wasn't showing his teeth that much. Because you're right, Biz, you don't notice the big Steve Harvey pearly whites, you know, in the middle of like trying to get home on, on the Odyssey. Now. My, my. I thought the movie was excellent. Loved it. I want to see it again because I didn't see it in imax. My theater experience though, it was one of the all time worst theater exper. No, not the, not the movie part, but going there and getting home. I couldn't find tickets. This movie, every time I looked there was no tickets. And then I looked and I see, oh, Foxborough movie theater in Patriot Place, which is right around Gillette Stadium where the Patriots play. They got restaurants, obviously, movie theater, all this. I'm like, oh, there's a bunch of tickets tonight. I'm like, this is perfect. So I bought the 7:30 tickets. Then I found out the babysitter could come at 5. So then I saw there was a 6:30 film. There's tons of tickets for that one too. I'm like, this is my lucky day. I'll go to the earlier one. The movie's three hours long. I won't get home at 11:15, 11:30, you know, I'll be home earlier. Well, we get in the car, leave. It's usually 25 minute ride. It says an hour and 15 minutes. I'm like, what the. I look it up. I didn't check. Gillette had Monster Jam for the Monster Trucks.
Patrice Bergeron
Oh no.
Whitney
So I'm like, oh no, I can't do this. Like sitting in that ride on Route 1 to get to when there's anything going on. Gillette, this is just horror.
Biz
It's a nightmare.
Whitney
It was horror, horror film stuff. I don't even go to Patriots games because of it. So then we turn around, I'm like, all right, forget it. We're looking at all these other theaters. Of course there's no tickets. There was tickets because there was a Monster Jam, by the way, though. So hold on. So then I'm like, well, what else are we going to do? Let's go. I got tickets to the 7 32. She's like, you had tickets to both? I'm like, yeah, well, first, whatever. I explained that turnout. Just sat in the traffic. Now at one point, I'm like, what are we doing? Like, it took an hour and 15 minutes. It was. We barely made the 7:30. We're sprinting. Sprinting in there, basically. And that's my problem with the theater. When I tell you sprinting into this theater is nearly impossible. What they've done is. Well, by the way, I get out of the car. I get out of the car and I hear the announcer over the loudspeaker in Gillette, like now racing so and so, so and so. Meg.
Biz
Grave digger.
Keith
Gravedigger.
Whitney
Yeah, Megalodon can't race. He's in the shop or something. Megalodon's not at the booze. I heard from the crowd, it was like, because Megalodon's one of the kids favorites. It's the monster, I think the shark looking one. So I'm like, oh, fuck, man, those kids are rattled in there. But we get into the theater and if you thought these kids were rattled after, no. Megalodon, I'm standing in line to get.
Ra
This is like.
Whitney
It's a newer theater. It was just redone, but it's. It's back to like going to the theater in the 80s. There's no, there's not. You know, this hero acts at all the theaters now, right? Like, you order food at your seat, stuff like that. And I don't know if you've been to a theater like that, but this is not one of those. You just go up there, they got popcorn, soda, whatever. I'm waiting for for a while because we're kind of late to the movie. I get out now. I go to the guide who gets your ticket, right? It's on my phone. I'm holding like 20 different things. I got. I got popcorn, I got candy.
Biz
I got.
Whitney
You know, I'm loaded up, long film. I'm like, dude, what theater is it in? Here's my ticket, right? Like, he's like, no, no, no, no. I can't tell you what theater it's in. You gotta. You gotta find out what theater it's in from the guy that just sold you all the popcorn. I said, no, no. I'm like, no. I'm like, dude. I just wait. I was going, no, no, no. I'm like, what are you talking about? And he's like, I know, it's crazy. And I was. I look back and I said, are they gonna let me in front? He's like, no, man, you gotta wait in the line. I buddy.
Patrice Bergeron
I was.
Whitney
I. I was like, where's the man?
Biz
The dumbest thing I've ever heard.
Whitney
And all of a sudden this guy's walking towards me with like a bowtie and real nice guy. I'm like, I can't wait in that line again, man. You got to tell me what theater this is. He's like, I'm like, just go look at the theater. Tell me what?
Biz
Who gives a fuck?
Whitney
That's. Have you ever experienced. I missed the very beginning of the movie. So I still have to go back. I couldn't believe that you had to get. And then why they don't tell you when you buy. I got large popcorn. Like you'd think the guy say, hey, I got to scan your ticket to see what theater you're in. So the whole ordeal. But. But then the movie starts and it was incredible. I mean, I'm telling you, I love this movie. I want to talk to Ra about it. I'm not going to give spoilers out. Avery definitely spoiled a part of it. Like, I was like, oh. But then. Not really, Keith. Because of what happened after. Either. Either way. Then I got. Why didn't you still traffic leaving. There was traffic leaving. I then sat in the same traffic leaving the Monster Jam. So I got buried on this night.
Biz
I get what you're going to ask Gans. You're going to say, why if you ask someone, hey, are you going to see Odyssey? And just say, where are you going? Where are you heading to?
Whitney
Because then they had to scan the ticket. They. They wouldn't scan the ticket till you knew it. I'm telling you, buddy, this was one. It was crazier than some of the. Some of the one eyed monsters in the Odyssey was just trying to get your ticket punched and be told what theater to go in. So kind of a ridiculous experience for the movies. But. But like I said, the movie was great. And then that was actually after that day I played with Celebrini, so maybe I was already on edge and this is all on me. And this isn't that crazy of a story. Kevin Hayes, he set up golf with me and him were going to play Will Smith and Celebrini. All right, awesome. Hazy had to back out last minute. I'm with Foles. I'm like, you want to go Play. He's like, get out of here in the. Yeah, Foles. Like, all right, we waxed these two up and down this golf course course for four hours. Just a complete kicking. We get to the 18th hole. Now, I've been told by my accountant to never mention financial figures on what we're playing for in golf. So I'm gonna take his advice. But we're playing for a good amount of money. They go double or nothing on 18. Okay, we win that now. I'm laughing now. Old Sandwich has a 19th hole, okay? It's got one little extra green. And when you walk off the 18th hole, there's a shot from 100 yards or 140 yards, kind of like a little gambling hole, a buy hole for say they double or nothing again, we win again.
Patrice Bergeron
I'm.
Whitney
I mean, I'm laughing. I'm like, oh, my God. I'm like, this Guy's new contract, 18.8 a year. I mean, what the hell is he gonna do? How's.
Biz
He's playing for free in two years?
Whitney
Yeah, for sure. So they want a double or nothing one more time because you can go up from a different angle and hit an 130 yard shot. So the same green, but a totally different, like, place where you're hitting down from they double or nothing again. And I hit it to about 15ft, a very good shot. And I'm humping air. I'm yelling, give the sharks my address. I'm like, this is false. This is unbelievable. Celebrini goes after me and hits it to about 12ft. And I was like, oh, no. I'm like, I gotta make this putt. Because, like, this kid seems like one of those guys, you know, and he was horrible. He's going to be good at golf. Like, he kind of just started playing. He's got a nice swing, but he. He must have shot 98. He was horrible, but he hit this shot. And I'm like, oh, no. And it's me and like, my. My past as an athlete. And if I don't make it, then it's him and who he is. Sure as shit. I miss and these guys read this putt for, I'm going to say 10 minutes. I have a video, false video, the entire thing. Will Smith's lining up the ball, then he's going back. Celebrity standing over. He's like, move your hands 2 inches to the right. The they're just adjusting like a video game. And what happens?
Ra
He can.
Biz
He nailed it.
Whitney
He cans it. Of course he canned it. Of course he can it. And at this point, the groups behind us were now coming up there and they're watching because I think two of the kids played with Will Smith at bc. They happened to be out there and it was like, I just knew it. I knew it. Walking down, I said, if I don't make this putt, and even if I do make it, he's, he's making it. You know, some guys have that, that it factor. So that was it. And then I couldn't get into the goddamn movie theater until I got my, the general manager to help me out, tell me what theory was. But overall, great Friday. A great what?
Biz
I was going to say what a great Friday for those two guys. And they probably headed into the weekend.
Whitney
They went right down to Chatham and then they were going to Nantucket the next day. And I saw them about to get abused. Did you see them in Nantucket?
Biz
On Nantucket?
Keith
First thing, Celebrini says to me, what? Tell you about my putt?
Whitney
Shut the.
Keith
I swear to God, I go, I think I heard about it two minutes after duty.
Biz
Oh yeah.
Whitney
He left out the, he left out
Keith
the fact that he shot a 98. But he was telling me all about
Whitney
that putt that he buried in my money. Fools. Was like, oh my God, I could do an addition on the house. I could do. And it was just, it was, it was a, it was a ballsy move. It was a big time putt by a big time player. And I guess that kind of leads us into when that contract news broke. I was like, wow. I was more amazed at just five years. I'm like, so this kid's going to be a UFA with a hundred million dollars in the bank when he's 25 years old? Yeah, 26 maybe. Maybe it'd be 25. I'm not exactly sure. Awesome for the Sharks, awesome for him. I don't know if it was a real quote or tweet I saw that said Mike Greer is like, I would have given him whatever he asked for.
Biz
20. I think, I think the full, the full 20%. He said.
Keith
Yeah.
Whitney
Okay, so that wasn't fake.
Biz
He's 20.8 or something. That. Yeah, it was.
Whitney
And then.
Keith
And all of it well deserved.
Whitney
Well, yeah.
Biz
I mean, this guy's a unicorn, boys.
Whitney
I, I witnessed it. A unicorn.
Keith
Yeah.
Whitney
And he's telling me his younger brother, he's like, my younger brother is disgusting. I think he's 14. So I think there's another one of these things coming.
Keith
If he does come, they have to set it up. Where he gets the play. They play on the same team.
Whitney
Yeah. If he's this good, you're saying in four or five years. I know, but he'd have no, he'd have no control of where he gets drafted.
Keith
Four or five years, he'll. Five years. Celebrini will be a free agent and he can just go to whatever team drafts him.
Whitney
Biz. What did you think when you saw the number?
Biz
I think that I don't. I would say thank you. Leo Carlson offer sheet. Cause that kind of, I guess set, set sort of the, the, the around where he was going to get, but I don't really think it mattered. I think that San Jose is one of those markets where it's like, okay, we need to keep a guy like this. You know, there's other, obviously other markets where he could thrive from a, from a, like a marketing standpoint and marketing dollars. But he's had great success there. He broke the all time record for most points in a season last year in his second year in the NHL. And that's, I mean he's Sidney Crosby 2.0. He's the, he's the perfect player. He does his own dirty work. You see these clips of these shifts where he's out there just busting his ass for a minute straight, stripping guys, getting in on the forecheck, backtracking, and, and, and then he could get it done offensively and pretty much do whatever he wants with the puck. And, and to also do it with. Listen, like I'm, I, I'm not trying to take anything away from Sid, but in, in Sid's like second and third year, they, you know, they were bringing in some, some veterans to surround them with this last season. Their team was, was not very good. If you look at their team on paper, you'd be like, oh, it's a little bit underwhelming. And the fact that he did that with having all that pressure and also doing it in an Olympic year where he went to the Olympics and they pretty much rolled that line out there with him on it every other shift when they needed a goal. So you're talking about the best Canadian players in the world and he's the guy that you're looking to at that age. He's a freak, guys. And I hope the league gets about 10 to 15 more of them because it'll just raise the bar for everybody else and money well earned. But like you said, five years, that would kind of suck to have to fork over that much dole and only get the five Years. But he had him by the balls and he's got all the control and shout out to Pat Bresson and his team for knowing all that, but more importantly him for putting in the work and being the freak of nature that he is.
Keith
Yeah, I don't think there's. When I saw the number two, it was just like, yeah, whatever number it was going to be wouldn't have rattled me. Just because what he brings to your team, what guys will want to do to go play there with him. I forget who we were talking to, might have been talking to whoever, but he was saying that all the guys on the Olympic team were like, I want to play with Celebrini, I want to play with celebrity. So like he's already got that it factor at such a young age. And I mean Whit, you spent four or five hours with him, like he just seems like such a level headed kid where it's like it's not going to get to his head him signing this big deal. He's still going to be training his ass off, working hard every shift. So I, I think it's well earned, well deserved and you know, good for both sides, I would imagine. Obviously if you're a San Jose fan, you'd like to see him for eight years. But hey, listen, you build around him, you get five unreal years out of him and you know, and then maybe he does want to stay and they're building something and they're winning cups in
Whitney
the next few years and you, and you say like, ideally, yeah, you'd rather give, get him on more years if you're my career. But you're also like not pissing them off. You're not starting any sort of like, oh, like why, why won't they kind of give me this? And you're just like, hey, we, we love you, we want you to be here. If this is what you want and this is what it takes right now, here you go. And then there's no bad blood. You know, you've look at kind of like look at what we've seen with different teams and pissing guys off and kind of how it goes. So I, I, yeah, I'm excited. He is really like a very genuine person. You would never know it talking to him, friendly to everyone, just seems to kind of know he's got the world by the balls right now, but not be cocky about it at all. So, and, and a big time potter,
Biz
the Sharks puts a little pressure on the Sharks where it's like, you got your five years, let's get moving here, start making some moves. They did do some stuff in the off season. Now, now with knowing he's making 18.8, are you a little bit more like the money they threw at that Truba and now they got Darnell. Like, does that worry you a little bit.
Keith
I didn't even think they had to.
Whitney
They had to do like, they just needed to bring in some veteran defensemen. How many more years those guys have? Four each. I mean, they have a lot of prospects. He was telling me, like the. Their draft this summer. We talked about that right after the draft. All the guys they've drafted before Misa, like, he's pretty fired up about what it's looking like there and how quick they think they can get it going. And I was.
Biz
He talked to Stenberg.
Whitney
I didn't ask him that. That's a great question. I was more folk. Me and foes are just like, we're. We're just in our game. Like, I, I didn't even remember. He was just. He was just somebody I was competing against out there. But I wasn't thinking of man in the arena. Yeah, man in the arena type shit. You know what I'm saying?
Biz
Let's get the poem again.
Whitney
Calling graph sign too. Now I wonder what Smith gets. I didn't bring that up either.
Biz
Did you ask him about anything? Maybe he's doing different training wise. Did you ask him about his old man? Did you guys get into any type of like off season, the hockey talk?
Whitney
Not really. I was asking him. They were. Smith was just out in van and I was like, oh, how was that? They just said they were. They were up at 6, training, skating. Then they'd go for like a track workout, skate again. Five straight days. They said it was. They were legit grinding. And then they were doing a camp in Boston this past week. I think the guy, Adam Nichols, was running it for local pros around here. So it seems like these guys are all dialed in. It seems like they're on the ice constantly.
Patrice Bergeron
We've.
Whitney
We've had this discussion a lot. That's just, that's how a lot of guys are doing it now. And looking back, I've said this, instead of bagging myself on the bike or bagging myself on sprints, I think I would have just skated way more, had my cardio always be on the ice. Like, why mess around with other cardio if you can just do it on the ice constantly?
Keith
And then you didn't have as many guys around though.
Patrice Bergeron
I know, but to get an actual good skate.
Whitney
I know. But I think if it was you and I, we could have gone out there and bagged ourselves with like drills and different types of things where. All right. We don't have to do. I don't know, maybe that's. Dude, our guys.
Keith
I was doing it. I just didn't invite you.
Whitney
You're like, dude, I don't need.
Biz
Son of a bitch.
Whitney
I don't need that shit, man.
Patrice Bergeron
Thanks a lot.
Biz
Son of a bitch.
Whitney
I don't need that guy on the ice. The Sharks, they also signed Graph, who I like. He. He's looked good when I've seen. And it's only 4.25. Three year. Yeah. Three year extension. Three year contract. 4.25 a year. So played over 16 minutes a year. And he had, according to G's outline, extended looks on a line with Celebrini.
Biz
So do you think some of the guys like McKinnon and. And Dryle are regretting signing eight year deals?
Whitney
You can't really.
Keith
Oh, the eight years, like the money, the. Just because of how much money.
Biz
Now, now those guys are. Those, those guys are playing through their prime on, man. You got. You got him making what, $6.8 million more than dry Seidl?
Whitney
It's pretty wild.
Biz
14. Yeah, he made 14. McDavid's at 12 and a half, but he's making.
Whitney
When McKinnon signed, I don't think it.
Biz
12.6.
Whitney
Yeah, but we didn't know what the cap was going to turn into or any. Like, Leon was recent enough where. Yeah, he probably. I don't know though. Maybe he's just like, dude, eight years at 14.
Keith
Yeah. How do you say no to that?
Whitney
I'm good. Yes. Thank you. Thank you. Unless it's Jason Robertson, he's like, no, thanks.
Patrice Bergeron
I don't think so.
Whitney
I'm all set there.
Yan
Yeah.
Keith
It's interest because Biz, you're the one who always says. I mean, you were saying it even before all these short contracts. Like if you were a superstar, you would just sign like four year deals.
Biz
I think it was Judd who was saying that.
Keith
Okay.
Biz
And that's where I was getting it. Yeah.
Keith
You weren't digging.
Biz
No, no digging here. Just.
Whitney
I saw a video of Matthews ripping pucks. I think he was in Switzerland.
Biz
Switzerland with Joe Thornton.
Whitney
He had on some like, designer sweatpants. I think he's just snapping pucks on some goalie. Unless those weren't designer. And I have no clue what I'm talking about. But they didn't look like normal Sweatpants you throw on to go out.
Biz
He's always got the expensive stuff going, like bell bottoms. Yeah, I don't. I can't keep up with all these brands anymore. Like what's cool, what the kids are wearing. But maybe they got Chromehurst sweatpants now. Maybe a couple two, three GS just for some, for some fresh cotton. But I don't got much else, boys. I mean, that, that's pretty much the only news. We finally reached the time of summer where things are calming down and it's almost time for training camp.
Whitney
Yeah. Novak signed in Pittsburgh. 4.65 million per season. Got that 42 points at 82 games last year. Oh, Billy G. Was apparently in Michigan.
Biz
Took the bird.
Whitney
He took the bird.
Biz
Took the bird.
Ra
Yeah.
Whitney
I would love. How much would you love to be
Patrice Bergeron
a fly in the wall?
Whitney
Billy G. And Quinn Hughes maybe having a couple.
Biz
Quinn missed the meeting. He was at a Morgan Wallen concert.
Keith
That's true.
Biz
Yeah. He did another walkout. So don't think that's going to bode well for Minnesota Wild fans moving forward. He's probably on the move, but. Yeah, I mean, what do you tell them? You tell him, hey, we're fucking blank check. Just like Caprisov.
Whitney
I, I think you tell them, hey, how many years will you stay here and what do you want? Yeah, and if it's true that they're like the rumors, you hear of him just signing a deal that will make him and Jack a UFA at the same time, I think that would be a three year deal.
Keith
All right.
Whitney
And yeah, just say, hey, we'll give you 18 times three.
Biz
What you would, you would have. Well, I'm saying is like, okay, so now you got, you got that two guys making 17 and 18 million. Like how it goes back to what Merle said.
Whitney
That good. I mean, he's not going to take less than Caprisov. He's better than him. And you want him there and you need him there. And if he'll do three years. Okay, look what they traded for him. He's kind of have. He kind of has him like, hey, give me this. I guess the G, the owner has decided he's not going to say blank check. That one he might regret a little, but maybe not. Maybe he's like, I don't care.
Biz
Let's go over. I'd be interested to see what if, like from the contending standpoint. Cause if he resigns there. I think that you would. And even for next year, going into next year, would you consider Minnesota still In the contender category.
Whitney
Yeah. Their forward lineup though, you've seen like tweets of like I don't know is this, is this a Stanley cup champion forward group? But I still would consider them contenders, no doubt.
Biz
So in two, let's say, let's say Quinn like stays put and he does sign for 18 million. Taking the five top paid players. What exactly. What, like what they would make of the cap like and when it kicks in, I mean you got boldy obviously as one of those guys, right?
Whitney
You have those deal. He's a nice deal.
Biz
Like how, how many teams who have won a cup have their top five guys making over 50% of the team's cap? Is a question I have for you guys.
Whitney
Okay. Yeah. That's one that I couldn't even begin. I got a better chance of getting into that movie theater without a ticket then I could answer that question.
Biz
But because it goes back to the same thing that happened with the core four in Toronto. It's just like the top five guys are all making too much money and they, they kind of signed at the like the, it was a perfect storm, right. Because Covid hit and then it was all of a sudden a flat cap. Clearly they're aware of where it's going to be going in the next five years. But these guys, these guys are signing their new deals projected on where it's going. So Caprisop 17, you got, you got Quinn at 18, let's say then you got boldy at what the good news is you got bold.
Whitney
He's 7 money too.
Yan
He's making 8, 8, 5.
Whitney
You also have news this year at 7.85. So like correct, you're getting that this
Keith
year with just be a two year extension.
Whitney
Well, I, I actually don't know when Jack's ends. I think for them.
Biz
I think Jack had five years left on his deal.
Whitney
I would think it'd be four because I thought people said if he signed a three year extension that they would match up which would be four more seasons. I don't know. Posh is probably slamming his computer right now.
Yan
Jack Hughes contract ends in 2930 at the end of the 30 season.
Whitney
So this is, let's do some crazy math. 26, 27, 28, 28, 29, 29, 30. Okay.
Keith
Now that takes Quinn to what age? How old is quinn right now? 26.
Biz
Let me grab my apple strudel.
Whitney
We're asking.
Biz
Well, you guys figure this out, this thing?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Keith
So he's 26.
Whitney
Power food to win a putt putt challenge. Against his 10 year old twin niece and nephew.
Biz
Yeah, well, this one's theirs. I'm stealing it just to get under their skin.
Whitney
Here comes Pasha. They don't have a 1C and they're forwards. Besides, Kirill and Boldi are paper thin. Good luck being Colorado and Dallas back to back every year with that.
Keith
While he didn't even put Edmonton in there for you.
Whitney
Well, he's talking division, he's talking central division there and he's just kind of waiting for the day to get the news that Quinn is on the New Jersey Devils. That would be the worst day for me doing this.
Keith
Never gonna happen. That's never gonna happen.
Whitney
If there was news that he was traded or signed with the New Jersey Devils, I don't know if I could handle that guy.
Biz
The only person left in the group chat would be Pasha.
Whitney
It's just everybody write things to himself. He's sending like box scores to himself.
Yan
Yeah.
Whitney
All right, let's with that, let's answer with this.
Biz
Does Quinn Hughes resign in Minnesota?
Whitney
Yes.
Keith
Yeah.
Biz
Do you think he signs a short term extension?
Keith
I think what Whit said, where it lines up exactly with Jack. So would that be a three year extension?
Whitney
Extension?
Keith
Yeah, I think, I think he does.
Whitney
And I also feel like, you know, Billy G's, he's got the bird out to see him. It would make sense to kind of ideally have that done before the season starts.
Keith
Yeah, for sure.
Whitney
Because as the season starts, the team somehow maybe doesn't play well. All of a sudden it's like, whoa, like is this guy going to be dealt to somebody else for the second year in a row? You know, I, I, I think it's just a headache that could be there that if they get him signed is just non existent, you know? Headaches.
Biz
Does Dylan Larkin make them a contender?
Whitney
He makes them better.
Patrice Bergeron
Oh yeah.
Whitney
And they're good already.
Patrice Bergeron
Oh yeah.
Whitney
I would, I mean what, what would they have to give up though? It's crazy. You see all today's the MLB trade deadline. I'm watching over all this Red Sox news and boom, they get a player. But you're like, oh, what'd they give up? What'd they give up? Then that comes back and you're like, oh, some fans who know all the prospects, like that's a ton. I don't know. Just give me the star player and the prospects and the draft picks. The, the disgusting, dirty, evil Vegas Golden Knights have just convinced me like draft picks and prospects just bring me in players who are already that good and we'll figure it out later. Liam Plutman style. All right, let's throw it to Patrice Bergeron. A true legend at the game. And the guy looks great. Awesome. Sit down with us. We appreciate it. I think you guys will hall of famer.
Biz
And not to. Not to create any rumor mill drama stuff, but I heard he is skating right now. Skating again. Okay, So I know Boston's a little thin at center. You just. You never know with the money that guys are making now. I could see him coming back for one more.
Keith
It could be stupid not to Patrice Bergeron.
Whitney
Let's take a quick minute here and talk rollback. Everyone, listen up. Summer is here. Summer. It's already August. Makes me sick. But rollback is locked in with the gear that you need to look good the rest of the way. We get the sweater polo first. Hear me out. Sweater polo is not what you think of Roback for, but Roback pulled it off. Super comfortable, super soft, and an incredibly clean look. Perfect for a night out. You're going to want one podium level stuff. If it's good enough for biz, it's good enough for the rest of us. Then the tailwind polo. This one might be my favorite. It's so soft, very comfortable. It's lightweight, breathable for the summer. So it doesn't feel like you're a walking billboard. Just a clean, easy to wear polo that works everywhere. And the kind of shirt you put on and immediately feel like you've got it all figured out. And obviously the swim trunks, if you haven't grabbed those yet, best designs out there. The liner that you actually want to keep in. It's built for everything from the lake to the beach. So go to roback.com rho b a c k.com use code spitting spit I n for 20% off your first purchase to the end of the week. Summers on. New gear is here. Let's go. Let's take a moment here and talk pin golf. Gee, didn't you just play with the. The. The founder of pin golf the other day?
Yan
Yeah, we played at Essex too. One of the nicest courses. Unbelievable. Just like the random rocks, they have just giant rocks in the middle of a fairway. The elevation.
Whitney
Donald Ross lived on that house behind like the 14th theater.
Yan
Yeah, it's insane. Obviously I played awful. But ping golf we had. We were dialed with the ping golf gear. We had the caddy, we had the. The range finder, the speaker. And it was pretty cool talking to Alex, hearing just all the entire origin story of Pingolf and how far They've come. And it was pretty cool, too. He was also telling me about their National Golf Month sale. It's going to be huge this month. And everything on their website is up
Whitney
to 50% off with dog the Caddy GPS tablet. Oh, yeah, that's also on sale. Okay.
Yan
Oh, yeah.
Whitney
All right. That's never on sale. So there's. There's a sale on $100 off on that. All right. So everyone can shop pinned National Golf month sale and get dialed in for the rest of the season. Fall golf is coming. Shop pinned National Golf month sale and get dialed in for the rest of this golf season. Ladies and gentlemen, we got him. A man who exemplifies leadership.
Biz
Karate skills.
Whitney
Karate skills. According to him. Now boxing wife gonna be a psychologist. The man can do it all. Stanley cup champ, Olympic gold medalist, world junior. Goal everything. He's done it all. Patrice Bergeron.
Biz
And he looks like he could still play. Boys.
Patrice Bergeron
Yes.
Whitney
So what's going on, buddy?
Patrice Bergeron
Not much. Thanks for having me, guys.
Whitney
Of course, of course. We figured once you retired, we'd be able to get you, you know, you're a guy that was just grinding and always dialed in, so came to Boston basically just to get you, so. We appreciate it.
Patrice Bergeron
Well, thanks for having me. Honestly, happy to be here.
Whitney
Awesome.
Biz
I was. I was on my way to take a piss and you were talking with wit. So you're. You're taking karate lessons now?
Patrice Bergeron
No. That's okay.
Biz
He was just 40.
Whitney
Told Gan okay. Because he could leg. Leg sweep a cow, I think at this point.
Patrice Bergeron
No, I did some boxing lessons afterwards just to kind of like try different things. And I did go boxing with authority and. And our coach over, Tommy was there, but that one was Sean Lally, MMA guy that we got acquainted and. And his friend now obviously. So. Yeah, so he, you know, we've just had that one session now. He says that I'm. I'm an Jiu Jitsu guy and I can, you know, I can fight and whatnot, but maybe I should have done that during my career. That would have been.
Whitney
How many fights do you have in the NHL?
Patrice Bergeron
I think three fights. Do you remember who Georgia's was? My first one.
Whitney
Okay.
Patrice Bergeron
Tyler Myers.
Whitney
What?
Biz
Okay. All right. He's got the reach on.
Patrice Bergeron
It's random. Yeah, he sure did the reach. And Blake Wheeler. Okay. Former team up. It's kind of wild, but yeah, when he was with.
Biz
He's a little spicy. Blake Wheeler, right? He can get spicy.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. I mean, that was kind of like a random thing. Like he. During the Game. Like, we were in this crumb, you know, in front of the net, and he kind of said, like, anytime you want me, Bergie, I'm. I'm ready.
Whitney
I was like, buddy, what?
Patrice Bergeron
So then I kind of had it in my head the whole game that I was like, gonna have to go. Like, he just called me out. Yeah, he just called me out and. But, you know, obviously a lot of respect for him and there's really nothing behind it. It just. It just kind of happened.
Keith
I'm sure the media ran with that, like.
Patrice Bergeron
Exactly.
Keith
Didn't want to sign with. Back with you guys, right? Wasn't something.
Whitney
No, he's traded.
Biz
Yeah, I was with the Coyotes. Yeah, that was at the Coyotes. They tried a nickel and diamond on the signing bonus.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
After he was. He was like, fifth overall. Right?
Biz
Fifth overall. And they try to. Nickel and diamond. You go, I ain't coming to Phoenix. Trade me right fucking now. Right, right now. So what's it been like being retired? Like, how much do you miss playing and. And like, have you really enjoyed the other side, though, and maybe getting a little bit more family time?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no, for sure. Definitely a lot more family time. As we talked before, my. My wife is back in school now, so I'm. I'm the stay at home dad and like the Uber driver and we got four kids, so definitely busy. But it's a lot of fun. It's nice to. And you know, I'm just taking a step back from. From everything and just kind of concentrating on family and prioritizing that right now. But, like, you know, definitely sometimes you do miss it. You miss the competition, the intensity of, like, being on the ice and being part of a team. I think that's probably the biggest thing. The camaraderie is. Is the one thing that you. You'll always miss.
Biz
Yeah, the room.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, exactly. Being with the guys and. But that being said, you know, in Boston, there's a lot of guys that are still around, which is kind of nice. So we have a little skate on Fridays. Just em, about this skating.
Biz
I started rumors that you were coming back.
Whitney
There you go. Started from that. I'm like, are you talking about the skating on Fridays?
Biz
I heard he's looking good. I heard he's coming back. They need it. They need a settlement. That could be a good deadline acquisition.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
You hear those rumors when we start them?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no, I did. I heard about it. I had to answer them, too.
Yan
Thanks, guys.
Patrice Bergeron
Media from. Yeah, there's a couple media that actually reached out. They were like, hey, I Kind of have to ask. And obviously friends from back home. So let's do that again. Like, I'm next year.
Keith
The way the money's going, you might want.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, true. Yeah.
Keith
One year. Deal.
Whitney
Yeah.
Yan
I need you in Boston, man.
Patrice Bergeron
Please.
Ra
One year.
Biz
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cassidy's not here anymore. You can come back.
Patrice Bergeron
I love Cassidy.
Biz
Yeah. Okay. So you were a big fan.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I mean, I. All my coaches had a lot of respect and they were great. So I have nothing bad to say about butchering now.
Whitney
Was there a side though, where there wasn't really anything a coach could ever say to you and you're a very modest guy. I'm not. But like, I think other guys were like, well, what's he gonna yell at Bergeron for? There's nothing to yell at. He's giving it to me constantly. You must have seen it a little.
Patrice Bergeron
No, they're. Yeah, but I think they're. Every coaches has, you know, a side of them that they can, you know, they're going after some guys and yes, some guys hear more than others. That being said, like, I think like he was trying to get the best out of every player in the locker room. And, you know, he's done a great job of that. You know, he's really good at that. And like, obviously his X's and O's and the way that he coaches is pretty, pretty amazing. So like, he's obviously have a lot of respect for all the coaches and the guys I've had and. But I do know that there are some guys that have different opinions about different guys, different coaches.
Biz
Yeah, we. We had him at tnt. Like, obviously, like you said, he's a brilliant guy. X's and O's, like, he. Like, there's really no gray area, it seems right. He's like, this is what you're doing. This is what this is. And then. But just like the other side of like just how. How a coach probably as intelligent as he is can tend to wear on guys because maybe there's some frustration over a course of an 82 game season, but. Yeah, I don't know that.
Whitney
Well, we can move on from that. I want to go. Go back to your youth. That's kind of how we do it on.
Ra
Yeah.
Whitney
And you have a long career, so it won't be too long.
Biz
But can I say this one, boys? This. This hometown where he's from, this is it Lancien Lorette.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Funny, because, like, I was born there. Like, I didn't really grow up there, but then it's like Everywhere, like everyone says I'm from.
Whitney
Is that Montreal or Quebec City?
Patrice Bergeron
Quebec City.
Keith
Like, okay.
Patrice Bergeron
Like a little suburb right outside of Quebec City. But yeah, I grew up in a small town just outside Quebec City called Sillery. Kind of weird, but. And yeah, so like, I was born there, then I. I grew up playing minor hockey around that area for. Until basically I. I moved to Juniors.
Whitney
Nordiques fan.
Patrice Bergeron
Yes. Huge Nordics fan, which I became an Avalanche fan afterwards. Like. And they won, right? That one hurt, like.
Whitney
Yeah. The next year, five.
Patrice Bergeron
They win in 96 when they moved. Yeah.
Whitney
You're 10. So it's like that' prime NHL fandom, I'd say.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no, for sure. 95. They had a really good team too. And they were supposed to like, go far. And then in the first round, they faced Montreal and they lost. So like, I was at the first two games. So, yeah, so it hurt. But at the same time, I was a big fan of Sakic and Forsberg and then they moved on to Colorado, so it was a big Avalanche guy after that.
Biz
Do you remember going to games in Quebec?
Patrice Bergeron
Like stadium?
Biz
Yeah, it's still. It's still there and still great shape. Right?
Whitney
New one.
Patrice Bergeron
It's a new one now. They don't really use it anymore. It's kind of like now there's a big debate on what they're going to do with it. But like, right beside it is a brand new rink. That's beautiful. Yeah.
Keith
Because it seems like every year or whenever Expansions talked about, it's always Quebec should get a team. Like, how. How much do you think they deserve a team?
Patrice Bergeron
I mean, I think it'd be great. I mean, obviously, like, you know, kind of preaching for, you know, my. My hometown. And I think the fan base is there. I know they've. There was some talk about the corporate side that wasn't as strong. I feel like it's became a lot stronger in the past 10 years, I would say. And yeah, hopefully, you know, down the road at some point. I know now there's, you know, we're creeping up on the amount of teams that we have in the league. So maybe it'd be a move or from a different franchise. But like, I would love it. I'd love for the fans and for the kids to have that as well. Because I grew up having, you know, you know, idols and guys that were in, you know, in the same city as me and, you know, playing the NHL and having that dream is pretty special.
Whitney
And the sickest unis going, oh my
Biz
God, those are Unbelievable. Were they not selling out that building in Quebec during the Montreal Montreal playoff run this year?
Whitney
Story on how they, how they like ended up losing that team.
Biz
Yeah, well, I just like meant this year during the run, like, you would see, you know, when they were on the road, you'd see the Bell center that was packed. I think they were also selling out the.
Patrice Bergeron
Were they?
Biz
I. I thought I. Yeah, for the halves when they were on the road, like, they would sell out that building too. Maybe I'm going crazy. And it was just the Bell center and maybe they had the wrong tag on the bottom, but I could have sworn I saw.
Patrice Bergeron
You might be right. Packing it because now the fans, the Montreal fans came, you know, like, kind of spread out to. Towards Quebec City. Now it's, you know, like. Yeah, that's the thing. I wonder if, like, the Canadians would be okay with having a team in Quebec City at this point, because now it's their fan base over.
Biz
We have a lot of probably even Canadians and. And of course, a lot of American listeners that haven't been to Quebec City. Like, how would you describe it? Just go into it.
Patrice Bergeron
Well, very European, you know, the feel, the downtown, the old Quebec. I mean, I think it's a pretty nice and small town.
Whitney
Like, beautiful.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I think.
Whitney
And it's great in the winter and the summer.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
Like, because they have.
Patrice Bergeron
Depending on what. Yeah, they have this like, music festival in. In the summertime that's pretty, Pretty incredible. Lots of great big names that go to. So it's a good time to go in July. And then obviously if you're not scared of the cold and you're used to it, there's a carnival in. In February during the peewee tournament.
Whitney
Ice.
Patrice Bergeron
Have you guys everywhere. Yeah. Ice sculpture.
Biz
GWENY LIAS Y yeah.
Keith
Drinking out of those big long things. Exactly.
Patrice Bergeron
There you go. Yeah, so it's. I mean, I, I recommend it for anyone that's looking for a little change of scenery.
Whitney
So. Love of the game was there, right? Like, was your father really involved? We're always kind of interested in, in like, where your passion came from. If you had siblings who played and, and. Or maybe best buddies. Like, what were, what were your winters like up there?
Patrice Bergeron
Just.
Whitney
Yeah, hockey.
Patrice Bergeron
That's what it was. I think it was from my brother, you know, he was a couple years older. He was playing hockey. I wanted to do the same as him. And back home, you know, like, there's a lot of like, neighborhood rinks, the outdoor, like, rinks in the winter time. So you just grab your skates and stick and gloves and you go, you know.
Whitney
And would they be lit up?
Patrice Bergeron
They're lit up in a night. Yeah, because it's dark at like 4pm
Biz
you know, is that still a thing there still? The rinks.
Patrice Bergeron
Every neighborhood has their own rinks.
Biz
And that's unreal.
Patrice Bergeron
So I didn't. It gets so cold that you don't have to, you know, now people have the pipes and, like, you know, the refrigeration and all that.
Biz
It's got it in his backyard. It has a little maneuver out there.
Whitney
Bagging myself. Did it for the kids. No, I'm good, dad. I'm out there doing mountains on the mini.
Patrice Bergeron
Climbing the mountain.
Biz
Like, there's a whole.
Whitney
There's a laundry, there's a hole in the ice.
Biz
Kids are puking all over the house.
Patrice Bergeron
Get the in here.
Biz
I'm not worried about your VO2 max.
Keith
I'm pretty sure Ray Borks, I think his dad, like, ran one of those rinks and that's how, like, for his neighborhood, and that's how he would just be on the ice all day. Every, like, even before school, their lunch breaks, they'd go out and skate. Like. So these kids were on the ice all the time.
Patrice Bergeron
Because basically it's free ice. Like, it's just there. Whenever you want, you can jump on. There's no, like, schedule or, you know, it's just like, you can go with the park pucking a stick and you. After school. I'd go there with my brother all the time.
Keith
Yeah.
Biz
Can I steal your question?
Ra
Sure.
Biz
What's good? Yan's was asking for? He said I'm gonna ask him about why is there maybe a lack of French Canadian players right now?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
Especially for me in the goaltending category. Like, you're telling me about these outdoor rinks where sometimes, like out west in Ontario, you see that they're limiting them and taking them away. You heard about stuff during COVID Well, if they have all these outdoor rinks and these kids can play for flee three, what's, like, what's happening right now with the development?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, that's a good question. I think there's a lot to talk about it right now. You know, I think Hockey Canada on as a whole.
Ra
Right.
Patrice Bergeron
Talking about it, but I think, like, especially, like the, you know, Quebec Federation, the province is doing a lot of soul searching right now and, like, trying to figure out, you know, what is the. The issue? Because, like, if you look at the world juniors, I think we only had one, you know, French Canadian on the team. From the province and none on Olympics. None on the Olympics. So, like, you know, like, I. I think there is definitely something that they're trying to figure out. You know, it's around the development. How, you know, is there, like, new ways of thinking of doing it that could be helpful? I know they're, you know, actually, it's funny because I. I was. I was at the world championships in Zurich, was it last week or two weeks ago, and I saw the. The director of the Quebec Hockey Federation, and they were. They're actually doing like a tour right now, trying to visit different, like, countries and see what, you know, what could.
Whitney
Like an audit almost.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. What can we improve? What things are you guys doing that has been successful whatnot? So I think it's great. I think it. Hopefully, you know, they find answers and. Because I know the talent is still there, the kids are, you know, the love of the game is still very much alive. It's more like, how do we figure it out?
Biz
Yeah. And it's not even bashing it. Like, I'm a proud Canadian.
Keith
No, I know.
Whitney
Yeah.
Biz
And, you know, I'm sure you're.
Patrice Bergeron
You're very reality.
Biz
Yeah. The province of Quebec, you want to see these guys flourishing, and Hockey Canada wants it.
Whitney
Oh, we're missing a province that we always had, like, where the.
Biz
Is our mark. Andre Flurry of. Of today. Right. We need a guy like that, like, with that type of flare and stuff, Even if it's just the net, for crying out loud.
Patrice Bergeron
It's crazy how the gold thing used to be, like, it's all French Canad Bobby Lou.
Keith
Like, it was like a. The top goalie every year was a French guy.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Keith
And like, you play in the Quebec league and every game's 86 or whatever, like the softest league. But all the toug guys came out of there for a while, like George the Rock. Like, there were killers out of there. And then. Yeah, it's. That. That's good that they're at least out there trying to figure it out, because I remember, like, Barkov telling me, like, in Finland or whatever, they would play half ice all the time. And then I saw it, like, the kids would be doing that over here, even using half fights instead of. Because, you know, when you're young, the one kid can ski fast, he's got
Patrice Bergeron
the puck the whole game.
Keith
But, like, having small area games, so making those changes is huge.
Whitney
The question I've always wondered is you play. So you played one full year in the Quebec League. Right. Where Most guys play two and then their draft year happens and your second round pick, best draft of all time, 2003.
Biz
There we go, baby.
Whitney
Like, it's just nuts when you look through. It's the amount of games that were played from this draft.
Biz
I think 20 guys in the first round have played like a thousand games.
Whitney
There's like 20, 10, 51, 1365, 15, 26, 1321 and like keep going and going and going. But all of a sudden you're in the NHL and second rounder and like, I don't know your expectations going. I've always wanted to ask you, like, did you have any idea you'd make the team?
Patrice Bergeron
No, not that year.
Whitney
Because they couldn't have even thought it, I'm guessing.
Patrice Bergeron
No, I, there's no way. I mean, I, as you said, I was a second round pick. And for me it was more. When I got to training camp was more like, let's leave an impression, you know, like, hopefully, you know, next year or the following year, I'll be, I'll be in the mix. And so I think at that draft they traded Stumple, who was a centerman. Okay. And they didn't sign anyone over the summer. So I kind of got there. There was, there was room, so there was an opportunity. Doesn't mean that, you know, like, doesn't mean anything, but.
Keith
Yeah.
Ra
At least for you.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. New coach Mike Sullivan, I think it was his, I think he made. Maybe he came in the year before, halfway through and so we were still like a rookie kind of, you know, coach coming up from Providence. So I think he was kind of like open to like, look at anyone, give anyone a chance. Right. So sometimes these coaches are like, you know, my.
Whitney
They have their guys.
Patrice Bergeron
Have their guys. You know, team is made pretty much before camp and this one was more. Anyways. I don't know, maybe that's something I'm just telling myself. But like, I got there and yeah, I mean, I, I. Rookie camp, I was supposed to like go through the rookie camp and, and come back to juniors to Bathurst in the Quebec League. And the Quebec scout at the time, Daniel Dore was, came to me. He's like, hey, you know, you had a good camp. We're going to bring you to regular camp.
Whitney
First win down, right? Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
So I'm like, all right, that's. This is amazing. And then first week of camp, I slowed down the first couple games, couple days. I was more like in awe of like seeing Joe Thornton.
Ra
Yeah.
Biz
Was on the team then.
Patrice Bergeron
So like. And he came to me again, which kudos. To him for like doing that. But like, he's like, hey, just don't, you know, don't think about who you're playing against, who you're passing to, but like, just keep playing your game. They really like you. So that was kind of like the, the moment of being like, all right, like, you know, they're, they're watching me. So, like, let's just like give it more, more energy, I guess. I don't know how to say it or explain it, but anyways, so go through the first week. And the first game was coming up on the weekend, it was Montreal. So I. He can't. He comes to me again, he's like, they're going to give you a game. And after the game you're going back to juniors. Like, you had such a great camp, they want to give you a game. So I go there, I played a game and I score in overtime and they're like, you're coming back with us. So I play this.
Whitney
You must have been so happy at this point.
Patrice Bergeron
Like you're, you're like, oh, my God, that was wild.
Whitney
I'm surviving this.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I know. And I was just happy to play that game, to be honest. My whole family drove down, it's about a three hour drive, all at the game. Had some friends.
Whitney
That's not three on three overtime at that point either, right?
Patrice Bergeron
No. Yeah.
Whitney
Find it out. Real old school time.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, it was. Yeah, no, you're right. And then, yeah, so I scored that goal. They're like, hey, you're coming back, you know, for the Boston. So I got back on the plane and we had nine games, nine exhibition games back then, which was a lot more than now. I played all nine and signed the contract at the end. They signed me. Yeah.
Whitney
Holy. I bet they weren't sure, though, if you were gonna like, because you could. Men. Isn't it the eight games thing then? Like, did you, when you signed, were you like, I'm right here all year or not even then?
Patrice Bergeron
No, they're like, they're gonna try. And at that point, so I signed the contract, which means I'm gonna start the year. And they signed Travis Green the next day as a center. And I'm like, oh, no, I'm going back. Like, you know, there's no way they're going to keep me. And then. So I played my first few games and they switched me to the wing and. And yeah, I guess we were on the road. Played the California trip to start, which was pretty amazing as start in LA for. Oh, you Know, I think it was Dallas. And then we played in Jersey at the Garden. The first game. That was my first NHL game. And it was a tie.
Ra
There were.
Patrice Bergeron
There were ties back then. It was a tie. Two, two. And back then, Jersey didn't give up any space. Right. It was just a boring 2, 2 game. And then we went to that Dallas and California trip and. And I didn't know if I was going to make it. And after I think game, maybe seven or eight, they're like, hey, you should look for a place.
Whitney
I'm in the NHL now.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Yan
When did you decide to live with Martin Lapointe?
Patrice Bergeron
So that's. That's what happened. So Mike Sullivan, and that's Marty that told me that. I guess Mike Sullivan, the coach went to Marty and said, can you help Bergey, like, find a place to stay? He's, you know, we're going to keep him. And he said, well, if he's okay with. I'll talk to him. But like, I'd love to. For him to come with me. So took me under his wing and stayed with his family. And I mean, that was beyond like cr. It was surreal to me to have him.
Whitney
How was your English at this point?
Ra
Awful.
Whitney
Okay. Because I. Yeah, I remember, like, I
Patrice Bergeron
could barely speak commercial.
Keith
Him on the Zamboni with Raycroft. No, no, it was Samson. Off Sergey Samson.
Patrice Bergeron
No, it was Razor.
Keith
Oh, it was Razor.
Whitney
For Bruins fans and even hockey fans. Like 0304, the Bruins roster. Thornton, Glenn Murray, Brian Rolston, Mike Knuble, Samsonov, Nick Boynton was there. Travis Green, Michael Nylander, a couple games. Hal Gill, Rob Zamner. Like, this was.
Keith
Oh, wow.
Biz
Gonchar and group.
Whitney
Gonchar. Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Keith
That deadline going back to like, they. Because the Bruins were known as like a pret. Pretty cheap organization back then. Right? I bet they were just flying you up there so they didn't have to pay for your flight from Boston.
Biz
100 quicker to get.
Keith
We'll bust you to Bathurst. Thank God you scored. Holy.
Whitney
But you made the playoffs. Who'd you play in game seven? Who was that first round against seven Game series.
Patrice Bergeron
Montreal.
Biz
Oh, my God.
Whitney
Where was game seven?
Patrice Bergeron
Boston. We had the home ice. We should have won that series by. By a mile. But I mean, kiddos, to obviously Montreal. But I'm just saying, like, we were up three to one. We lost that. That. I remember that.
Biz
So this is. You came in an interesting time too, because you came out. Came in pre lockout.
Whitney
I know that's.
Biz
I mean. But before we get there, though, I want to talk about the draft specifically. Like, did you know where you were going to go around? Like, did you think you would go that high? And then like, what was it like as a, as a French Canadian kid getting drafted by the Bruins at that time? Because I feel like that rivalry was still a thing back.
Patrice Bergeron
I loved it. I was, I was, as I said, I was a big Nordics fan and when they left, like I was not a Canadian at all. So like to be with the rivals for me was, was great. So that's. But like the draft, like I, I didn't know. I had no expectations. I obviously I fell under the radar. Like I wasn't really, you know, I wasn't. I. The second round, the third round was kind of my hope. I knew the first round was not like kind of out of the, the equation. I didn't go to the. What was that game back then? Like the oh, prospects prospect. I didn't go.
Keith
I make that or Cherry.
Whitney
Was that something at the time you're like bummed out about or were you.
Yan
Not really.
Patrice Bergeron
I started on fourth line in Bathurst that for my first year I was on the fourth line and it kind
Whitney
of moved up the NHL one year. Yeah, yeah.
Keith
You only get 70 points and like
Biz
that because that first year in junior you played four games to kind of get your feet wet. You came in and played that full season before you made the NHL and like you went into that camp and started fourth line and just progressed your way up.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, exactly. So like that. So those, those four games were like around Christmas time. They, they had a lot of injuries. They call me because they were playing Quebec City. So like I was right there. They're like, did you wanna. So I, I came in for a few games around that, during that road trip and then went back to Midget aaa. But then this following year I still wasn't like a sure shot to make that team. I was a fifth round pick in, in juniors.
Whitney
Yeah. So at 13 or 14, I know we're kind of all over the place. Were you like not one of the big names in Cuba City? I, I mean you must have been pretty good.
Patrice Bergeron
I was a good player like on, on my team.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
But I don't know if you guys remember like Steve Bernier, Mark Julio.
Biz
I play with them in under 17s.
Whitney
Yeah, they were like the guys, the
Biz
guys like they were like playing with Crosby and Ramouski.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, exactly. Ruse and Danny Ruse.
Biz
Oh yeah, I play with him. Okay.
Patrice Bergeron
So those guys were like the, you know, they were above and beyond everyone. They were like like men playing with kids basically at that age. They were like amazing. And so they were like the ones that were supposed to be like, well, that ended up being first round picks and but you could tell like they had something special about them. But like, so I kind of fell because of that. Under the radar a bit because I was playing in the same league
Keith
and
Patrice Bergeron
yeah, so like got drafted in the fifth round, juniors, got a couple games that, that same year when I got, I went training camp, got cut, but then went, played major aaa, got the four games around Christmas time, came back down and then the following year that's when like I was, I, I was saying like I wasn't a sure shot to make that team. So like I was at the end of training camp, like obviously ended up making it, but I was on fourth line and kind of worked my way up during that year to eventually being on the radar to at the draft because like that wasn't something that I, it's funny because like my age at the time I had like an agent, but he wasn't, you know, he was more advisor. An advisor. Yeah, exactly. And then he called me in January and he said, how's everything going? It's going well. I mean I, I'm having fun whatnot. And he goes, I was talking to Chicago the other day and they, they like your game. And I was like, chicago, like, who you talking about? He's like, the Blackhawks. I'm like, what? I was like, what do you mean? Like, so I had no idea that I was like, it's almost like it
Whitney
kind of quite good almost.
Patrice Bergeron
It was over my head. The fact that I was, it was
Biz
my draft year and you were, it seems like you were probably, were not reading the press clippings, like reading things about yourself. You're just kind of worried about playing
Patrice Bergeron
hockey and getting better and Bathurst is a really small town. Like, you know, Yan's nose, like it's so. Yeah, I was just hanging out with the guys and like do you think,
Whitney
say, starting off on the fourth line, you had to be pretty good defensively? Like, do you think that led to like the type of player you became where you were just, it was so responsible. Right, like, because you had to be that way maybe at like a younger
Biz
age and in a, in a league where I feel like it was very point driven, like the Quebec League, like a lot of these guys, 100 points, 150 points.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I think the, you know, it definitely made me like conscientious of like, you Know my defensive game and like, making sure that, you know, because if you make a mistake, if you're on the fourth line, like, yeah, you're probably not seeing the ice again. Right? So like, obviously there is that part, but also our coach that year was really big on like face offs and like playing the right way and like, you know, like not taking any chances. And you know, I'm a type of guy that wants to do right by the. Yeah, you want to press your coach right thing. And like, so like, that was like, I took so much. I put so much emphasis on like Face off and working on it and like making sure that, you know, was doing the right. So I think that helped me a lot that year. Like that learning process of like playing defensively sound but also like, you know, try to eventually bring some offense to it as it. The year progressed.
Whitney
All right, so take the. The rookie year happens, which is just incredible. Like the way that all works out and then all of a sudden, like, boom, league's canceled right now. Since you're under the entry level deal, like, was there any discussion of anything or was it Providence? Like, you knew you were going to be in Providence, which I was in the AHL that year. It was a great league team. Five to seven guys were on the NHL team the next year. But was there talk of going to Europe or anything? You know, guys?
Biz
Yeah. And I feel like those players had the adv coming out of the lockout. There was a lot of like, old school guys who. They probably had big contracts and they took the full year off and they came back and it felt like the game because of no more obstruction. It was like another, like another level, another speed and. Yeah, like what. So like, what was all that like.
Patrice Bergeron
And they like the. The new rules we did in. During that. Yeah, we tried the new red line. So we were using million penalties at
Whitney
the beginning of that.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Oh, all that stuff. Like we tried, like we were kind of the guinea pig. Guinea pigs for that. So like, it was helpful having that year for sure for myself. Like, I never really considered Europe because like, so the. My junior team was like pulling hard for me to go back.
Whitney
Yeah, yeah, but that's like.
Patrice Bergeron
But then I was like, well, I really wanted to go to Providence. The main reason was to. To continue my development, but also the second was to continue to learn English because it was so bad. I was like, I gotta. Because last year, the year before, I was with Marty, right. Playing speaking French, speaking French to the family pretty much the whole year. So then like, you don't really. You need to immerse yourself if you want to learn and. And really improve. And so, like, I was like, I need to go live on my own and, like, learn English and, like, develop as a player. And. And I knew that the league was going to be a great league, you know, like, there was a lot of talk of, like, a lot of guys in my situation or younger guys that were going to go play. Like, I remember Spezia went and played.
Whitney
Yep.
Patrice Bergeron
So a lot of guys, their team was a wagon.
Biz
He was talking about Bingo. Yeah. He was saying how they ran through the regular season, then you guys beat him in playoffs.
Whitney
And I actually wanted to ask you if you remember, we played you guys in Providence, and it was an afternoon
Biz
game and there was 16 anthems.
Whitney
David Kochi fought Colton or. I don't know. I mean, you've played, so buddy.
Biz
Coach must have got.
Whitney
It
Biz
looked like me and hers put together.
Whitney
Blood reached Boston from the Providence arena from coach's nose. But actually, I. I knew Colton. Or you guys had. But you had Brent Thompson.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Ra
Oh, my.
Whitney
You had Brenton Walsh on that team. It was Jay Henderson. That was a tough team you guys
Patrice Bergeron
had, but every team was like that, though.
Whitney
Yeah. There was meat down there then. Yeah, Meats.
Patrice Bergeron
There was at least three or four fights. Every game. Every game. Yeah.
Whitney
But what's cool about that? Oh, sorry. Go ahead.
Keith
I was just gonna say, from playing in the NHL with the old rules going, and then in the AHL with the new rules for you, was it like, oh, my God, this is so much better, because the D back then were big, holding you, and I'm sure you were 18, you were still growing into your body, not as strong. So was it much easier for you in the AHL that year, as opposed to the NHL the year before?
Patrice Bergeron
I just felt like it was a lot more fun. Like, you know, you felt like you had more room, more time. Obviously it was nice to have more power plays, you know, like. But the red line made such a big difference. But then it was a big adjustment, like, defensively, like a neutral zone. How do you defend? And, like, so there's all that. But, like, I can't imagine, like, playing with a red line anymore. You know what I mean?
Biz
Like, Wayne. Wayne says they should bring it back. I asked him what would be one. I said, what would be one rule change? And he said he would bring back the red line. He had a. He had a great reason as to why my CT's kicking in right now. I can't really remember what that's so
Whitney
tough to just bring up something Wayne Gretzky brought up. Crazy rule and then not knowing what he said.
Biz
Yeah, okay, well, I mean, there's a
Whitney
10 chance we drop this interview. We'll have you call so we can then after the interview give. But that year. So the coolest part for you that year was you leave middle of the year and you go to play for the greatest world junior team argument. Argumently that's ever. That's ever kind of been fielded. And that was the first time, I think you and Sid played together, right?
Patrice Bergeron
First time.
Keith
Yeah.
Whitney
And. And I just remember it was in North Dakota. I remember you guys and it was like Ovechkin versus Crosby and. And Malin was there too, and Malkin was there. And like take. Take me through your memories of that and also like seeing Sid, who hasn't even been drafted yet, you must have been like, who. Holy.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, who is this guy? I remember the first practice when Sid was on the ice and he. There's a three on two and I don't know, like, we kind of like regrouped in neutral zone and he ended up being in the middle and I passed to him and he went right through both Ds with such Pete. I was like, what is going on? Like, and it was like Shea Weber. And like, enough.
Ra
Yeah, yeah.
Biz
Your decor was like a hall of fame decoration.
Patrice Bergeron
So it was. I was like, oh my God. So I'll just give him that puck. I got. So like he's. Yeah, he was on a different level. He was 17 too. Like, he. With the bubble and.
Whitney
Yeah, yeah, but nine too. Wasn't he?
Patrice Bergeron
Right? Exactly. No, that team was. Was incredible. I mean, so much fun. And as I like, I've never really had. I guess I played the year before at the Worlds, but like, I didn't really. I didn't know much of these guys because I wasn't part of these games, you know, the under 17 or under 18, whatever that's called. And so like, I didn't. I didn't really know get Slav or like Carter and Richards and all these guys were new to me. But like, I was so impressed with the talent and, and the character also. It wasn't. The guys wanted to win and like they were like chirping each other and like in practice they were going hard and the intensity was always like.
Whitney
Because they're almost like feeling each other like you're on the same team, but there's some competitiveness there. Right?
Keith
Like you're all that playing against.
Whitney
You're all that back playing against them. Yeah, I mean, going through this, the tournament scoring leaders. You led the tournament scoring. Then it was Getzlaf, Ovechkin, Jeff Carter, Malkin, Crosby. And it like, you just keep going and going. It's nuts that you got to kind of experience that, which is probably cool to break up the HL season too. Yeah, you get to go away for two, three weeks.
Patrice Bergeron
It was a fun, fun experience, but also was a nice little breakup in the season. Especially at that time, I think there was talks about, like, if. If we're not going back to the NHL, halfway through, it's, you know, it's over. So, like, knowing that, like, I went over there, I had the chance to, like, live that experience, and, you know, I'm looking at it as the glass half full. Even though, you know, I missed a year playing the NHL, I had a chance to play the world juniors and like, on. On one of the good teams that, you know, has been.
Biz
Has been on the ice up until that point. Like, had you faced. Ever faced pressure like that? Because I believe it was the year prior where it was the Patrick o' Sullivan goal off of flurry, right. They'd lost the gold, the gold medal game. So all of a sudden you guys have this stack lineup. Half the team was a year underage of the max the year prior. So now all of a sudden you have the Phaneufs, the Seabrooks. I think Cockburn was on the team. Crosby, obviously a year older. Like, was that the most pressure you'd ever felt to that point to, like, bring home gold for Canada?
Patrice Bergeron
I don't know if we felt pressure all that much. It was more like the expectations inside the locker room was so high. The guys had a chip on their shoulders because they lost a year before. Like, as you said, I think it was 11 or 12 guys coming back from the year before.
Biz
Stephen Dixon was on the team.
Yan
Yeah.
Biz
Of all guys.
Keith
Clark MacArthur, I think was on it.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, like, he was there.
Biz
Yeah, it was crazy.
Keith
He just.
Whitney
Fourth line grinder.
Biz
Was he shaving his V neck into his chest back then? And his. His triceps.
Patrice Bergeron
I remember him being so funny, man. Oh, he was the best in locker, you know, like chirps and like, just the. The one liners that he had. Like, he was a great guy. But yeah, the guys just. I think because of what happened the year before, like, it was just like they were on a mission. Everyone you could tell, like, there was no. Nothing was really going to stop them from, like, getting that goal that Year and, you know, I was running along, and it was a lot of fun to be a part of that.
Biz
What was the gold medal game? Was that against Russia?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, Russia.
Biz
Okay.
Patrice Bergeron
Six one. Oh, God.
Biz
That's a state.
Whitney
That was the Double Dion game.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, the double deal.
Biz
Yeah.
Keith
You mentioned, like, going to Providence, learn English, then you go into a locker room like that with all, like, how many of those guys ended up being captains of NHL teams? And for you, you're known as one of the best leaders. Like, when did you find your voice to be that leader and be able to speak up, be who you are now?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no, I think that year was. Was definitely helpful for me to. To start a little bit. I mean, going to the world juniors. Also the fact that, you know, I played the NHL the year before, you know, I was bringing some experience to the locker room, and it's, you know, coach was Brent Sutter at the time. Put an A on my jersey. So that, you know, obviously meant a lot. I was still maybe a little shy with the. With the English, but once I was with guys my age, it kind of helped, like, finding my voice a little bit.
Whitney
Not, you know, you're more confident.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Not feeling so bad about, like, messing up or whatever. So, like, that. That tournament really helped me with, like, the leadership part, but also leading by example, but. And learning from some guys, too. Some guys were like, you know, Mike Richards was. Was a guy that was pretty impressive as a teammate, and he was. He was a menace on the ice,
Whitney
you know, he was.
Patrice Bergeron
He was a game.
Whitney
Exactly.
Biz
I played under 17 with him. Under 18. Jeff Carter, like, ju. His stick was so good. Maybe not the fastest guy, but just fight anyone.
Whitney
So that lockout year. Him and Carter came to Philly after their OHL season. And in g. In the second round, we were up 4:1 in the third period. Game six. They won 74. They end up playing you guys in the.
Patrice Bergeron
Play them in the. We lost in. Want to say six, but.
Whitney
And they won it.
Patrice Bergeron
They won. Yeah.
Whitney
Yeah, they.
Biz
Oh, the year of the lockout.
Whitney
Yeah, they added those two, and it was.
Patrice Bergeron
It was fair when they added those two guys. Yeah, they led the. The league in scoring, the playoffs.
Biz
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Carts and Richie, I think.
Whitney
Yeah.
Keith
Dude, that out of junior is insane.
Whitney
Oh, and now. And like we said, that league was legit.
Biz
Talk about the first three years of your.
Ra
Your.
Biz
Like your professional career. So you make it out of camp after only playing one year.
Whitney
Junior on the fourth time. Beginning of that year. Yeah.
Biz
Yeah.
Keith
Fifth round.
Biz
Back in the queue. That three, four Year span. Then the next year you go to Providence, you get to win gold with with Canada and experience. You know that that year down the Miners with the new rules. And then that next year you come back and then 23 games into the season, Joe Thorton gets traded.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
What the is going.
Whitney
That must have been so shocking for.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, it was especially this early in the year. Like it was. Yeah, it was wild. It was a crazy time for sure.
Whitney
Now going back to the year you lost to Montreal, that was when they were all over him. He had broken ribs. Right. And they, the media it was. And the fans were like, oh, oh, he's not producing. And it's. And I think a lot of people who knew and you. Yeah, I'm speaking for you. It's like the guy they can't even breathe the broken rib right. Like that was part of it, I think, wasn't it?
Patrice Bergeron
100. Like I, I was always impressed with Joey. Always wanted to play through so much. Like, I remember like earlier in that year, my first year, he, he got into a fight against Lindros and Lindros broke his face. Like his, his orbital bone and his nose and he got surgery. And then we had a game like the next day or the following day. And I remember a trainer being like, hey, you're gonna take some a few weeks off. Like it's the regular season. And it was, it was on the ice. He played the game. No, he was wild.
Ra
Yeah.
Whitney
Full cage.
Patrice Bergeron
Full cage. And then. Yeah, he was. Yeah.
Whitney
Love when the game so much was being questioned. I know.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. No, that was not not it like he was, it was as stuff as they come. But also his love of the game was special.
Keith
I don't think there's anyone who loves the game more than he's still in the walk.
Biz
Still doing helicopter talks for the boys out of mine.
Keith
I love them, but it must have been too like they knew they had him where.
Biz
Oh.
Whitney
Which is weird for you, I bet.
Keith
Right?
Whitney
Right.
Keith
Yeah.
Whitney
You're 20 and you're lighting it up that year. So they're part of it is like, oh, we kind of got our guy. Which is maybe awkward for you.
Keith
Would have been nice.
Patrice Bergeron
I don't know if I saw it that way. I mean I, I, I couldn't tell you really what the reason why they treated him and what really went behind the scenes. But I was still young, you know. Like, I, I know you know, I needed some time to really like be, be the, the face of the team. But yeah, I mean it was, it was a Crazy, crazy year. Obviously it was a. It was a. Definitely a tough time around. You know, the fan base and like, there's a lot of things going on around that time. The building wasn't always full. You know, there's. There's some. Some tough years early, but, you know, obviously it was all worth it in the end, I guess.
Whitney
And so those two years out of the lockout, point per game player right there, your game's like, really? And you're 21ish. And then all of a sudden, that Randy Jones hit. Yeah. And. And I think, would you play 10 games?
Patrice Bergeron
You're like, that was my 10 games.
Whitney
Did you ever try to come back during that year? I mean, it was kind of similar to what Sid went through later, where you're. It's kind of a scary time. Right. Like, you'd been through a lot, physically and mentally, to not know if you were going to be good again. Right.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no, for sure, it was. It was more mentally. That was. That was the hardest part. You know, like, I probably could have played at the end. I think I was. I was ready to play. And I'll never know if. If you know, what was the best decision at that point, maybe it would have been fine to play, but they shot me. I think I was young and they wanted to shut me down and like, you know, let's start over. Let's have the whole summer so you can really build your strength back.
Ra
And.
Whitney
And they weren't the playoffs anyways.
Patrice Bergeron
No. We were there for the first round. Okay. We lost in the first round, but, like, we were kind of rebuilding also that year. So it was. Yeah, it was a tough year. It was. It was mentally really draining. And it's more the questions that goes through your head or the questions that people ask you. Right. Yeah, you've been asked all the time, how you feeling? Are you gonna, you know you're gonna be okay or, you know, are you the media asking if, you know, you're gonna feel you're gonna be scared we go back on the ice or feel you're gonna be the same player? So, you know, a lot of soul searching at that point, but, like, it was something that obviously made me stronger that I learned from.
Whitney
I guess, like, after that, I mean, it was kind of like, you're saying the rebuild happened. What besides the. I mean, there was names that came in and Krachi becomes a player. And then the biggest thing, though, was like, Big Z and what he brought and Savard, and then you have to see him go through everything. But you must have been realizing we're building something special here, right? And what did Big Z act like when he came in? Because we've heard the stories of camp when he's doing 35 pull ups and everyone's like, ah.
Keith
And you were still pretty young when he came, right?
Patrice Bergeron
He's 21.
Keith
Yeah, yeah.
Ra
Jesus.
Whitney
Demanding, right?
Patrice Bergeron
I mean, like, so I played against him right when he was in Ottawa. So like, when he, when I found out that we signed him over the summer, I was like, oh my God, thank God, you know, like, I don't have to face him anymore. But I guess, like, what I didn't realize is he plays as hard in practice. So then like, so I asked more of. Wait. I always tell that story of like, usually it come to me and be like, hey, let's set the tone today for practice. And he always wanted to start drills. And it was like a one on one drill. And I was like, yeah, let's go. Like, let's, let's, you know, let's play hard and let's, let's set the pace. And I go into the, the corner and he absolutely buries me, like, from behind. Dude, I'm like, I'm on, I'm on the ice.
Whitney
I fall down, got the whole year.
Patrice Bergeron
No, but that wasn't that year. I'm just like, that's kind of kind of jumped a few years at that point. But like, and then he's. I'm on the, on the ice and he's pushing me down and like, my helmet's over my head and I'm like, like, what is happening? And then like, clothes, like, feels bad. He's like, all right, like, you know, I'm waving the, the white, the white towel here. Like, so, like, he blows the whistle, like, goes back to the, to our line and goes, great job. And I'm like, yeah, for you. You abused me for 15 seconds in the corner. Like, what? Anyways, I always thought, I always tell that story because it's kind of like Z in a nutshell, you know, like, you just can't turn it off. But like, what he did for us as a team and, and individually, like, just to like, find that edge and find the intensity and like, don't take a practice or shift or a workout, you know, off. Like, you always need to be on and, and, and that's the culture that he, that he brought in. I mean, it's just leading by example every day, right? They didn't have to say much. You just had to look at you like the wrong way to be like, all right, like I'll dial it back in. You know, so. And, and then. Yeah, you're right. You know, they, they brought in some character guys and some pieces that came in and like wanted to be a part of the solution and, and, and really bought into what you know, the leadership group wanted to sell and, and the coaching staff and. But it definitely started with Z, you know, and, and as in its intensity and, and you're right. You know, the, the pull ups and a training camp and back then we used to do the, the wing gate.
Whitney
Oh yeah, the quick one. But it was, it was worse than the feel.
Patrice Bergeron
Like you had a puke after. Yeah. 100. But he crushed it by like it wasn't even close. Like the sec, it was first, but the second was like, I don't remember exactly what the bike was broken.
Biz
Yeah, it came down to basically what your, your watt, your job.
Yan
Right.
Keith
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
If you're able to sustain anyways. But like he was miles ahead of everyone else. So. And then he was kind of like mad at us because he was kind of like, hey, we need to like, we have a lot of work to be in front of us if this is what we're showing up with in this. So then that's when like in the summertime guys, like we're nervous about him.
Ra
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
But also like, I think it was great for him to be like, you know, this is unacceptable. Like these numbers are like embarrassing. Like we need to like figure it out. So a lot of things happen. But obviously that, that part of it, that competitive drive and that leading by example of like this never being satisfied from Z has been pretty special to, to witness but also I think really helpful for us because we were all young at that time.
Keith
I tell the story all the time. When we were during the lockout in. What was that? 12.
Whitney
When he came back from China.
Keith
Came back from China. We were all skating at bu. It was like the dog days of the lockout. And he flew overnight, landed cayman skate and we were like two minutes late getting on the ice. He comes in the locker room, get on the eyes. Every scream we're like, dude, we've been, we've been doing this since September. Leave us alone.
Biz
He's like, get on the eyes.
Whitney
They ended at 3 in the morning. I think to try.
Keith
I'm like, go see your family, man. Yeah, he was a machine.
Biz
What was your introduction to Brad Marshaw? Like? When, when did he, when did he.
Whitney
Funny enough, I didn't know. I thought the cup year Was his rookie year. He played 20 games a year before. A goal.
Biz
Yeah.
Whitney
Like, I didn't know that. I thought it was that first bad sound.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no. He had a couple training camps, I think before maybe a year. One training camp, they went back to juniors and then another training camp where he played in the A and then came up and played those 20 games and then the following. So I think it was his third training camp, his rookie year and was
Biz
he being a rat out there? Like, did you notice him? Like, were you. Was he on the radar?
Patrice Bergeron
He was like. I remember actually when I was coming back from my concussion that summer, so we, you know, I missed that whole year, come back in the summer and there was like Dev camp. They started doing that. So Marshy was there and I, I asked if I could go skate with the guys and like, so I was there and I remember doing like a first practice. I didn't know Marshy at all. We do this drill and it's a one on one in the corner and he comes in so hot and he like. And he hits me basically. Yeah. And I'm like, who is this guy? Like, and he was like, obviously, like, he's, he's not the biggest. And I was like like, what's happening? And he was so relentless on the puck and like hitting me and like, so like I was like, all right, like this. But I liked it. I was like, this guy's a gamer.
Whitney
Like, knew what he was doing too.
Patrice Bergeron
So like from that training, from that camp and they asked me, they're like, if there's one guy that like stood out. And I was like, this guy, like Marshawn, like he's, he wants it. You could tell. Like, you know, I remember, I don't know if you guys saw, but like Marty St. Louise said he was at Def Camp for the Canadians. I think it's from this past year. And he said if I, you know, if I have like a ball and I leave it at the center of this locker room.
Biz
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Who's going to leave with it?
Ra
Right?
Patrice Bergeron
I would. You'd be on the team who's got, I guess, the guts and the will to, to go above and beyond and really do whatever it takes to make the team. That's what Marshy, you know, kind of felt to me that during that, that week of Dev camp, like he was just like, like a dog on a bone at every play. He wouldn't give up. Like, let's say like you go for like, you know, a shooting drill early in practice and just take the one shot, go in the corner, he would go for the rebound, grab the rebound, try to go score. Even if, like, yeah, you know, the goalie was still watching the next guy coming, right. He was still going put the puck in and like, why?
Biz
Kind of like how Talbot was a little bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Whitney
But like, Marshawn just was so skilled. I remember. So I. I know. I remember watching the finals and I correct me, he was on the fourth line at one point in that year.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
And then by the finals, you guys are playing incredible together, top line. And I was like, this guy, like, he's so much more skilled than I thought. Playing against him early or watching, I was like, wow, he's like toe dragging guys. And like, he had moves that I didn't expect. Where you say Talbot didn't have like, that aspect of it also, which was even crazier.
Biz
No doubt.
Patrice Bergeron
No, he definitely had that skill. Skill set that, you know, but then he. He came in and he. He was willing to do whatever it took to, to stick and to be on the team and if it meant to be on the fourth line and be like, yeah, you know, a pest is. You know, he didn't care. Like, so. And kudos to. To him for. For doing that and. And obviously he had it in him too as well. But for Marshy, I think it was more like the growth, you know, from like the, the steps that he took from. From like, like the beginnings to like, to now really like it.
Biz
But he's all just like, maturity wise.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, maturity. Yeah.
Biz
I think he was. It was hard. It's almost like he was stuck between, like, he had to be that like, four checking guy who would get under your skin in that rat. But yet then he had to be like a top line player. So he was trying to find that balance. Like. Yeah, there was a few instances, but like, you look back on hockey history, like, hilarious. Him licking Callahan's face. Hilarious. Unbelievable. That is like, like, you guys must.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, that's where we draw the line.
Yan
Marshy,
Biz
when he did that, like, what are you guys saying in the locker room?
Patrice Bergeron
I mean, it was more like. Yeah, he was like, what? It's not in the rule book.
Biz
That's what he said. That's such a marshy answer.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, he was like, trying to get under their skin. It was like, well, I mean, you know, do whatever it takes.
Whitney
Well, yeah, but I don't.
Patrice Bergeron
I don't know if you should talk about this or if you, like, know.
Keith
Yeah, but there's also, like, for you, his teammates like, guy, we don't want you suspended. We want you playing. Yeah. There must have been conversations.
Patrice Bergeron
No, there's conversations, but Marsh is a smart guy. Like, he. Yeah, he's extremely emotional. Like, he's, you know, he's got his heart on his sleeve, and, like, he'll do whatever for the team, for his teammates, and, you know, there's moments where, like, the emotions got the best of them, and it's just what it is. And he would be the first to say after the incident and be like, yeah, I know. You don't have to say anything.
Keith
Like, I don't.
Whitney
I just. The wires crossed.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, exactly. On the batch. Many times I had to, like, put my arms around him and be like, buddy, like, simmer down. Like, we have.
Whitney
Really?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Let's get back to the game. Like, we need you.
Biz
You know, like, would he ever bite back at you or would he always.
Patrice Bergeron
No, it would.
Biz
Like, that's cool.
Patrice Bergeron
No, we had that relationship. Right. Like, we were really good friends, and we still are. So, like, it's. Yeah, it was more like. And I was. You know, it happened to me as well, where he would be like, hey, like, you know, let's focus back on the game and, like, you know, let's forget about this or whatever. So, like, we had. You know, we've played together for so long that we're able to, like, be able to talk to each other and, like, and have no hard feelings from it. So, like. And to go back on Marshy to him making it, I think, like, he's. He paid his dues, and that's. He always says that, and sometimes it grinds his gears when, like, he sees, like, guys.
Whitney
First line. Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
I think for him, he's like, that's what built me, like, fourth line and have to work my way up and, like, you know, eventually, like. Like, coming through. Like, that's the adversity that, you know, you need.
Whitney
That's why he's still playing. Yeah, that's part of it.
Keith
I think I played with him in junior. He was on the fourth line, like, barely playing. Like, there were guys way better than him. Like, I mean, similar to you earning everything that he got. Like, nothing was handed to him. You got to tip your cap to guys like that. Because nowadays it's like, even when you made it 18, there wasn't many guys like it is now.
Patrice Bergeron
No. Yeah. It was an older league.
Whitney
Guys played.
Keith
Yeah.
Whitney
After being drafted.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
Oh, it was crazy. Like, it.
Biz
The thing that was crazy about it is, like, it kind of goes back to that 03 draft, and maybe it was just timing because of the lockout, but a lot of those guys just kind of stepped right in.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
So that was kind of like a weird time for it to all go down, but pre lockout, it was so rare.
Keith
Yeah.
Biz
Like, it was so.
Patrice Bergeron
But I think the lockout changed that because the new, you know, the new rules of cba, like. Of, like, it became a younger league as well. Right. With the rules and like the Cabs.
Ra
So, like.
Biz
Yeah, they needed those cheap players, eh? Yeah, yeah. A lot of the child labor.
Keith
Yeah. I mean, but that was 36 million, wasn't it? It was something.
Whitney
It was low.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
I don't remember exactly the number, but yeah, the.
Biz
The. Like. Like the culture, like. So, like, Sullivan, was he fired or does his contract.
Patrice Bergeron
So he was. It was fired. And then Dave Lewis came in for. For a year and.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Load came in the following year, if I'm not mistaken.
Biz
And when he got there, could you sense it? Like. Like, that's our guy. Like. Yeah, yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
I mean, so speaking about, like, Z and like, the culture that he brought in and. And the intensity, I think Claude was very, like, black and white, you know, in the structure. You. You either, like, do it as I say or you don't do it and you're not gonna play. So, like, there's a lot of that where there's no gray areas and there's no, like, ad lib and, like, trying to. So, like, it was a lot of, like, very simple system, but also very effective. And I think that's what we needed. We needed some structure at that time. You know, we're very laxative. Daisy Cole and a lot of, you know, guys cheating and a lot of, you know, cutting corners and. And he really, like, changed that aspect on the ice, and I thought that was. That was great. And again, I go back to. But yes, Clothe came in with that system and that culture. Z. But also the guys that came in after, like, the character that came in and. And the buy in that that was there from those guys, like, made the biggest difference.
Biz
What, like Lord
Patrice Bergeron
Gregory Campbell boy.
Whitney
Sean Thornton, parents. It was a tough team.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
Like, wait.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
The crazy thing about those teams was that it was tough. And you'd say all these guys and then you'd be like. And Chara. Yeah. Who was the toughest of them all?
Keith
Yeah, it was crazy.
Whitney
But the 11th season, which we have to get into that a little bit, I. I think people forget the year before you're up three zero against Philly and then you're up three. Nothing in game seven. You lose that. So that had to create so much anger going into that next year with everyone and probably worry with Drew Julian a little bit.
Ra
Like.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
To get through that, to survive not getting fired.
Biz
That was the year before they won it.
Whitney
And then Philly lost to Chicago in the final.
Keith
Wow.
Patrice Bergeron
Is that first round or. Oh, my God.
Whitney
I would say it right here.
Yan
Philly. No, it wasn't.
Ra
It wasn't.
Patrice Bergeron
Right. Yeah, second round.
Biz
Yeah, we. We actually played you the. The year that you guys won it in the World Premiere Games at the start of the year.
Keith
Yeah, yeah, I was gonna ask you that, like, because every time we were a very tight knit group and every time we saw you guys get eight guys, deep ten guys. You guys always like that on the road?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, yeah, we were. That was, you know, it was great, especially those years was we wouldn't text each other, like, who's going where we'd go. We'd meet in the lobby and just like figure it out from there. And then we used to have like some big groups going out for dinner, which was awesome.
Biz
How Gil calls it, the bag chuckers. You get there, you chuck your bag in the room and you're right down the lobby.
Patrice Bergeron
That's exactly right.
Biz
Him and Chris Mason.
Yan
What was the young Tyler Sagan like on that team? Because I don't know if you guys remember, but he was a rock star in this city. I've never seen anything like.
Biz
It was him and Grogger.
Whitney
Yeah, yeah. And Marshy was running around with him too.
Yan
Shirtless. The greatest bar. You'd see the P everywhere.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Sags was. He was something. He was so much talent. I mean, obviously came in and lived on his own at 18 and like he was living it up for sure.
Yan
Got the boot out of the apartment quick, right? Oh, yeah, I think he did.
Biz
He got a booted.
Yan
Yeah, I think so.
Keith
I didn't get his first in last month.
Biz
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're keeping the deposit.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, he was. He was wild, but he was, man. Him. Was he talented? He was. He was a good player and obviously it was. I'm sure he would say that. Like, I think it was a great thing for him to be on the veteran team as well.
Biz
Oh, yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Guys. And like, you know, to help him, help him out. I know Soupy was huge for him at that time to. To help him getting his way around and, you know, probably got him out of trouble a few times as well. So.
Keith
Yeah, for you having clothed in like a French coach, were you like the buffer for the team? Because he used to be hard on guys, right?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, he was hard on guys. He was. I want to say he was demanding, but he was fair. I go back to that. I think he was. He wouldn't like. I think you knew why you weren't playing or you, you know, you know, this is why. And he would have meetings and tell guys, you know, as. As it is. And you know, sometimes it's as. As we said before, you know, like, there. There's some relationships sometimes that are harder to the gap, I guess because of like the. The difference in. In opinions. But like, at the end of the day, like, you knew why you weren't part of the. The lineup. And this is what I need need from you if you want to get back in. And. But yeah, was I a buffer? I think he was good with like, meeting with us and, and like sharing what he thought and like for us to. To kind of. So I think like, we were the bridge for sure and I think we were selling what he was selling.
Keith
Yeah.
Biz
You know what I mean?
Patrice Bergeron
Like, so I think like, you have to.
Whitney
You're buying in that you have to be in sync.
Patrice Bergeron
Like, if you're not with your coach and like your leadership group is like behind your back, like talking crap, like, obviously that's just not like, how it's going to work. Right. Then there's going to be some. Some issues. So like, that. That was really important for him to. To share that with us. And, And I thought, you know, for us, I think we did a good job of like buying in and really selling to the guys. Like, this is. You know, there was some back then, like, I don't know if you remember, but like, you had to wear a suit even on the plane and like.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
So even on the road we had to wear a suit on days off and like. Yep. And that was like, now, like, that all changed. But like, some guys were like, we're in Florida. We're wearing like a super jacket on top.
Yan
Can we.
Whitney
From the guy, Montreal. That was like, it weighed like 30 pounds.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Keith
Dominated.
Biz
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Whitney
In Lauderdale.
Biz
My suitary wool suit. Special three piece.
Keith
Yeah.
Biz
Just absorbing. You're at. What's that bar in Florida called? Elbow Room.
Keith
Elbow.
Biz
You're at the Elbow Room, just sweating your dick off your wolf suit. Grinding on the dance floor, paying cash for booze now. So you guys were kind of like the Leafs before the Leafs. You guys blew that, that three one series lead against Montreal. We just talked about the one you guys blew to Philly. So going in that next year, as Whit mentioned, like, you guys had this massive chip on your shoulder.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
Was that up like a different level?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I think it was. I mean, it was definitely a learning experience for us to. You know, I think it was. It could have been our first or second time going to second round.
Keith
Right.
Patrice Bergeron
Like, so, like. And to lose obviously, the way we did, there's. We had no business losing that game. We're up three nothing in game seven. Right. So to go back to that series that we lost, Cratch, like, we were up, I think three nothing in the series of three 1. And CRCH. Richie hit him and. And broke his wrist. And that hurt us. We lost our momentum there as well, losing him. But that being said, we should have won that series. But yes, I think, like, to go back to the world juniors and like, you know, losing the game the year before and the guys coming back the next year with. With Avengers, I think that was definitely true for. For our team. And yeah, you know, I remember having a lot of early meetings and in. In. In August, even with Z and like, Claude and. And really trying to come up with like, a plan and like, this is how it's going to be. The issue. It was. It was definitely like a different, like, feel a lot more business. Like. And like, all right, like, we. We can't mess this up because if we do, like, we're, you know, we're gonna break. They're gonna break up the team, you know.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
The course might be gone. The core is gonna be gone. Like, and that was. You know, I'm gonna fast forward. But like, like in 2011, like in. In. In the first round, we. We were almost. We went to game seven against Montreal and we were supposed to win the. Win that series pretty easily. And then we went to game seven. So, like, we lose that game.
Whitney
I remember if that's done, it's. It's done.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
Holy. That was. That was. The guys won it.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
Wow.
Biz
So you guys went to seven against Flort.
Whitney
Not winners. Tim Thomas made a save on Gianta, I think, in overtime of that game.
Patrice Bergeron
Game. I don't know if that was overtime, but. Yes, that. Two on one, you mean.
Whitney
Oh, my God.
Biz
Yeah, it would have put them ahead.
Whitney
Yeah, it was Timmy.
Patrice Bergeron
Like, there was so many saves like that. Like, the amount of saves that he made during that playoff run is insane. Like, crazy saves too. Like what?
Biz
Like, so. So was Tim Thomas with the team the year prior?
Patrice Bergeron
Didn't Tuka play Though was Tuka in that?
Yan
I think Tuka played that year. And then they went into the next season. It was like kind of a goalie competition. And Thomas played so good. It was like, all right, this is your net. Okay.
Patrice Bergeron
Y, you might be right. I, I, I wasn't sure on that.
Biz
What, what was his, what was his demeanor? He kind of looked like a bit of a beer league goalie because of his style, but, and, and he seemed like he probably wasn't the skinniest guy either, but could he get it done?
Patrice Bergeron
Oh, yeah, the battle fly. We called him like the battle fly. Yeah. Because there, because it wasn't like we didn't know what style it was. It was just like as long as the puck stayed out of the net. Right.
Keith
Like that was his instead of butterfly fly.
Biz
Yeah, that just kicked in, man. That just kicked in.
Whitney
That is unbelievable.
Biz
What's a battlefly?
Whitney
He's like this, he's like, no, instead
Keith
of butterfly, he's just battling. But he could be butterfly. He could be.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, exactly.
Whitney
He was so get it.
Biz
No, I get it. But it's like, is there such thing a battlefly?
Patrice Bergeron
I don't think we put that much thought into it.
Biz
Is there a battlefly?
Patrice Bergeron
Maybe Tim Thomas going to come up
Biz
the B. Who's, what's a battle fly?
Patrice Bergeron
It's not a real thing.
Whitney
No.
Biz
Yeah, it's just you. It is.
Patrice Bergeron
I think we made that up. Yeah.
Whitney
So Horton scores ot, right?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
And then I don't remember second round, but third round. I we've said before on the show, best one nothing game of all time against Tampa. Incredible game at home. Horton scores the winner in that, I believe.
Yan
Yeah.
Keith
Didn't Bugsy take a puck in the face in that? He.
Whitney
No, that was the finals with Pittsburgh. Okay, but, but then you get to the finals and you lose both in Vancouver. And I remember in Vancouver was so good that year.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
Take us through kind of like the team like on the way home. And, and basically the, the fact is you just pounded them every home game that series. Like, did you guys know going in this thing is so far from being over going into game three?
Patrice Bergeron
I think we did. I mean, so to go back to like the first round, we were down two nothing against Montreal.
Whitney
That was the Ference middle finger.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. So like we're down two nothing heading to Montreal for game three.
Whitney
Oh, you lost the two home.
Yan
Yeah.
Biz
Dude.
Patrice Bergeron
So that was wild. And so we had that and we won the series. So like we had that in our.
Whitney
Okay.
Patrice Bergeron
They're like, hey, we've done it before. Like, so we kind of had that speech. We're being like, hey.
Whitney
And we did it on the road. Game three and four.
Patrice Bergeron
Exactly. Now we're going home. And like so I think we had that confidence of like we've done it and we've been through so much during like that was a wild, you know, run. I mean all the playoff runs. When you go all that all the way, it's a pretty wild in the long, you know, journey. But we went seven the first round. We won the Philly in four seven again against, you know, Tampa. So like it's not like we. It was an easy way there. So I think like that experience and that. That knowledge of like, hey, like it's not going to be easy. Like we have to find ways was in our minds and you know, we got home. Obviously it's a much better feeling than going game three.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Road. Right. So like at least we're like, all right, let's just get yet. Let's just do the job at home, stay in the moment and. And. And go from there.
Whitney
And just beating the. Out of the.
Biz
The one thing I remember from. From talking to Kevin BX about that is how like confident they were until game seven at home. He said that he could sense the tightness in the locker room. Now you guys going on the road for game seven after forcing it to game seven, like, what was your guys demeanor? Were you guys like, were playing with the house's money? Were you guys super confident or were you guys also tight knowing that that man, one game to decide whether we're Stanley cup champions or not?
Patrice Bergeron
No, I think it was the opposite. It was more like, let's go play hockey. Like it was, it was a pretty cool.
Biz
You had that feeling you guys were going to take it down.
Whitney
I felt this one at home, like it's got a little like on the
Patrice Bergeron
road when you go on the road. I think the fact that we're on the road, as crazy as it sounds, like you're with the guys and like you just have that. You go for dinner tonight before. And we actually had it a team dinner at the hotel we just stayed in because like it was crazy over there in Vancouver.
Biz
Oh yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, it was wild, you know. Yeah, we'd get booed. We'd like, with like some restaurants didn't want to like host us for like for dinner. Like it was pretty wild, but it was, it was awesome at the same time, you know. But that being said, we had that team dinner and I remember sitting with Rex, Mark Recky. And just seeing this demeanor of, like. Like, he grabs a glass of red wine, and he's, like, so relaxed, and I'm like, all right. You know, like, this. This was. And then I just asked him, I was like, have you been in game seven of the finals before? And he goes, yeah, twice. I was like, and you won both. And I was like, all right.
Whitney
I like that.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, he was so. I don't know. I just like the way that he was like. And it was his last game, right? He was retiring after that. So, like. Like, just to see him, like, yeah, just, like, enjoying the moment and, like, almost being like, hey, let's enjoy dinner now, and we'll worry about the game tomorrow. And we'll.
Whitney
You know, it's pretty cool, like, to see a veteran who done it and be like, oh, he's.
Keith
He.
Biz
He's twirling his wine glass.
Patrice Bergeron
Rex smelling all the sends it. You know what I mean? And I'm, like, both freaking out beside him. I'm like, all right, I guess battle.
Yan
That was a huge cup final, too, because it was the first time in a while that it was a US Team versus a Canada team. And then there was all the hate with the Bruins and the Canucks, like, Burrows, your finger. Remember?
Biz
Oh, there was a lot. I think they called them the Sadine sisters at some point.
Yan
Remember Mar.
Keith
Oh, my God.
Yan
Aaron Rome hitting Horton and knocking him out of the series.
Keith
Yeah.
Whitney
Horton poured the water on the.
Keith
He brought the water from Boston.
Biz
What was. Did you, like. Did you know that was going on?
Patrice Bergeron
No, I didn't know the water, but the hit on Hy. That. Honestly, that. That poked the bear a bit. Like, that really kind of turned the right and.
Yan
And the next one was, like, 8:1, wasn't it?
Patrice Bergeron
The guys, like, we. Yeah, it was like, almost like, all right, we're. We got to do this for hoardy now, you know? Like, it was. And we had Timmy. Timmy stood on his head, like. And he had, like, the hit on Sadine, like, one of the games. Oh, yeah, he was.
Whitney
When he was looking up at the puck or something.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, exactly. But having him, like, you know, like, his demeanor also, like, just always so confident and, like, would you guys ever
Yan
be like, what the Is this guy doing? He just skated out to the blue line to hit guy.
Patrice Bergeron
It was almost amazed with, like, his competitive drive and, like, his will to win. And, you know, he's. You look at his career, man. Timmy, like, he's been, like, through so much, and he's overcome so Much adversity and, you know, almost like, had to prove people wrong almost all the time, right. Just to be like, all right. To eventually become, like, a number one goalie. And then when he was given that chance, like, he freaking ran with it. Like, it was pretty impressive. So, like, the confidence that we had, like. Like having him having Z behind, like, in the back end, like our. Yeah, I feel like our structure helped us also. But, like, Vancouver was. They were wagon, too. They were a good team. Like, it was. It was a battle. It was.
Yan
I feel like Dennis Seidenberg is such an underrated part.
Patrice Bergeron
He was credible if he wore regular skates.
Whitney
His son is, like, really good. And his son apparently is a complete wagon of a human, too.
Patrice Bergeron
But he's.
Keith
Sides is a machine in the white room. What?
Patrice Bergeron
I think he told me he was 12 or 13. I talked to him the other day. He's like 12 or 13. He's close to 200 pounds already. Holy. Just
Keith
right. Creatine at age two.
Whitney
Exactly.
Keith
So was it game six? They beat him eight. One.
Yan
It was game. I think it was game four. Threw a hissy fit that my dad didn't get me.
Patrice Bergeron
Three or four were there in the.
Whitney
Yeah, yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
It was back to back.
Keith
Because then they brought in Schneider, right? Was that game six? They brought in Schneider, but that must have.
Patrice Bergeron
I think he came in okay. But that was just like, during the game, right?
Keith
Yeah. Started every loose started and then he came in. But even going to, like, a game seven where the goal is being switched, like doing that to a goal, especially a Hall of Famer like Lou being able to get in his head, like, that's got to be a good feeling for you guys going into seven.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, no, for sure. I mean, I. I think at that point, you're. You know, you want to rack up the. The goals to kind of like, get in the other team and the other goal he's had. But that being said, you know, they're professionals. I mean, Lou's been around for. For a long time at that point.
Whitney
And you're like, we're gonna win one road game.
Patrice Bergeron
Exactly.
Whitney
Not. We've lost three. Like, we're due.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, and there were tight games, too. You know, it weren't. They weren't blowouts in Vancouver.
Whitney
Yeah. One of them was, I think, Burrows and OT early.
Patrice Bergeron
There's. There's an OT first one, I think. And then lapierre had a game winner on game two, and in the third game, I'm not sure who got the game winner.
Whitney
Yeah, that's true. Where you were blowing them out at home and then they're close there. It's like, guys, they were like, hey,
Patrice Bergeron
we just have to go out and win one. And you're right. Like, it's the. And I. I can. I can see it on from the V. The Canuck side, where they're like,
Yan
you know, like, game three was eight one. Game four was four nothing.
Whitney
Either way, not close. Game six.
Yan
Game six was five two. So another. Another one.
Whitney
That is. That is nuts. I mean, what an amazing run that was, though. And for you just to like, CZ raise the trophy, kind of an all time screaming. It just had to be just such an incredible feeling with those guys that. That had done it together for. For a long time. And we're so close to being broken up.
Keith
I guess kind of the first crew after they won that we heard to
Whitney
go because it was bar steward. That was because of barstool. That was legit barstool. Like just port noise, getting pictures saying Marshawn. Saying Marshawn. Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
You know, they got the call after two weeks.
Whitney
Probably go.
Yan
Go home.
Patrice Bergeron
Go home, guys. Leave this city. Yeah, it's time to. So I guess, like, authority got a call from. I don't know if it's Cam or Sweens or whoever, but like, oh, back then was Peter Sorelli, but I don't know who called Tory, but like, hey, make sure you talk to Margin Shags and tell them to leave the town. Leave the city. So I guess Marshy told me that he's like, you know, I was kicked out of Boston party anymore. I would have gone another week.
Keith
Remember his voice singing Black and Yellow? It was like.
Patrice Bergeron
But he was mangled gold. I didn't realize he was. Yeah, when I called him out on that, I was like. Then he started singing.
Ra
I was like, all right, let's.
Patrice Bergeron
Let's move on.
Whitney
He's. He's blacked out again.
Biz
What was the story behind that? What was like $120,000 tab or something?
Whitney
Something ridiculous authority was telling us about that. And Foxwoods or something like that was.
Biz
That comped.
Patrice Bergeron
So, like, there is the bottle of Ace of Spades that was like 80 or 90 grand that they comped. So it's not like, like, yeah, wow, still a lot of freaking money for a party. But, yeah, we didn't pay.
Whitney
So it's.
Patrice Bergeron
It's.
Whitney
It's hard because you just had such a long career. So, like, we could talk more about that. But then, you know, there were some heartbreaks for you. Obviously, we haven't Even mentioned the gold medals in 10 in Vancouver and. And Sochi. But with the Bruins, like, that lockout shortened season, that was the year that it was like, this guy's playing with a punctured lung and what you went through and that heartbreaking game six loss. They got the two goals quick. Was it true you weren't gonna play game seven?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I don't think I could have played. It was too bad. I was.
Ra
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Because at that point, I was at the hospital and I. They had to do, like, to have. I had to have surgery on the. Well, but the lung to get back up because I was. It was collapsed at, like.
Whitney
How did that happen?
Biz
Yeah, how's it. How'd that happen?
Patrice Bergeron
Oh, my. I broke my ribs in game two or whatever, and then I kept playing, and eventually, like, the ribs. I punctured my lung.
Whitney
Jeez.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
Who got you?
Patrice Bergeron
I couldn't even tell you. Like, it just started from, like. Like, a weird play. Like, I think it might have been C Cbrook. Like, he kind of. I was trying to shoot and I was off balance and tried to push me, and I fell on the ice and I fell awkwardly, and I was like, oh. And I. I think my. That's when it broke.
Yan
Well, you had a separated shoulder, too, at the time.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, that was later. That was like, game five. Oh, geez.
Biz
Okay, this is biz.
Whitney
After one hike.
Patrice Bergeron
Just couldn't do the podcast with the airborne operation.
Whitney
When the rib punctured the lung, did. Was it like, Like.
Biz
Or were you.
Whitney
Did you feel that right? I don't even know.
Patrice Bergeron
It's weird. Like, I felt like something poke. Yeah. Like, you know, like a sharp pain, and then it just went away. So I was like, I'm fine. And eventually. Yeah. So.
Whitney
Jesus. I mean, that is like. But that team was so good, man. That Chicago team was incredible.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Yeah.
Whitney
Like, that was their second, I think.
Patrice Bergeron
Second. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They had a good team. I. It was. It was tight, though. You know what I mean? Like, it's hard to, like, at that point, you know? Like, it's anybody's game. But they. I mean, kudos to them. But I remember where I was.
Biz
I was in Vancouver and I was. I was like, walk. Walking by a bar, and they had the game on, like, at the. At the end, and then they went bang, bang. Who got the first one? Bickle and Bolan.
Ra
Is it those?
Whitney
Yeah. Was like. I think Boland even, like, almost thought it was. He didn't think it was Gloves. Like.
Biz
Yeah.
Whitney
Just got the winner. What would Be the winner.
Yan
Kind of broke up the core after that, though. That's when Sagan got traded right after that dude.
Whitney
That was. After that.
Patrice Bergeron
Was it that year.
Yan
Yeah.
Whitney
I'm not mistaken, huh? We haven't asked about Craichi, though, who we got to do a sandbagger with. Great guy, like, playoff performance. Oh, my God, that guy in the playoff.
Keith
He was a machine.
Whitney
Playoffs, but it was always like. Like, you look at Stanley cup championship teams in Pittsburgh, and it was two great centermen. So, like, it was always, you know, you never were together unless it was power play. Right. But you just knew he had his own line. You had a line, and that's kind of how you always knew he'd be ready to go in the biggest games.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I mean, he was like. I don't know. I think it's his demeanor for. For Crutch. Like, he was always. Never too high or too low. He's like that for anything in life, by the way. Like, he's so, like, laid back and such a great guy, but, like, it's his talent. It's just the way that he would slow the game down. Obviously, him and Luch and Hordy, who was a menace on the ice, right. They were like, a pretty amazing trio for. For a long time. So, like, it was. It was great to have him. You know, like, I. I said that many times, but, like, obviously we were competing, you know, like, being both Sandman playing on the same team and, like, in a way, like, competing for ice time. But we never felt it that way. We never really had that.
Whitney
That.
Patrice Bergeron
That sort of, like, unhealthy competition. It was always about, you know, like, you know, they would have a good moment, a good game, and I was always extremely happy for him. Vice versa. Like, Chris was always great with me and always a lot of respect for each other, and I think that helped also, like, kind of for the rest of the team to realize that, you know, like, we can all be, you know, ourselves and. And be successful and individually and, like, that's gonna. As long as we're, like, bringing it collectively. And I think that that's spoke volume for the rest of the guys that, you know, like, don't.
Whitney
They're not bickering.
Patrice Bergeron
Don't complain about exactly, like, what you're not getting or what you want. And it's more. It's always about, you know, the team. And Crutch was really good with that throughout his career. He was always taking whatever ice time and whatever minutes that he was getting and. And making the most of it. And, and I always respected that. And he was an amazing teammate and
Keith
obviously player just like, I'm sure you don't want to talk about yourself that much, but like, like I think you, Barov, kopitar, like these two 200 foot players that just do everything right. But also if you guys wanted to, you could have had a hundred points every year if you just cheated the game like some guys do a little bit. But what's kind of like you're in even with Kre learning from you. What was kind of like your going into a season for you to have a good year? Was it a certain amount of points or. I wanted to be the best defensive player because you did both so well.
Patrice Bergeron
Well, yeah, that's a good question. I never really set like goals for myself as far as like points or statistics. I think I was always trying to worry about, you know, the team success and like, that's how I would like, I guess rate my game, you know. And I always felt like I wanted to bring more to anyways. I always want to improve and like felt like there's always, you know, another level to get to or like other players that you're like, oh my God, I, you know, they're able to do this, let's try to work on that. Or they this. So like, you know, I've, it was maybe based on my overall game, like if I was able to be strong on the face off, it was always to me like it was all. It's always been a game of details.
Keith
Yep.
Patrice Bergeron
And if my details were good, like the rest was taking care of itself
Whitney
and like, like the junior coach almost said. Yeah, right. It was, it goes back a long way.
Ra
Wild.
Patrice Bergeron
Because like if you think about it sometimes, like, you know, like you're, you're, you're not scoring for like five, six, seven games. And now that's when you, you're being asked about it and that's when it gets in your head a little bit more. You know, like, I think like it's, it's one of those things where you, if you think about the end result and you think about scoring goals, you're never really going to get there because you don't take your, take care of your details. But if you always worry about your details, winning a face off, making it, you know, getting the puck out when it's time to get the puck out, giving, making a nice pass when it's time or shooting once, you know, you're always going to event or have a good forecheck eventually you're going to be in the right place at the right time because the puck's going to find you because you're, you know, doing the right things. Right. So, like, I feel like that's, that's something that I've always kind of preached was for me to take care of my details and the rest of my game will follow. And, and, and then it's more on the collective side where, like, you know, I wanted to make sure our PK was good, our face offs, you know, that's for my team. Like, I want to make sure, like, I'm effective for them. Like, so that way was how I would rate my, my game for the most part.
Whitney
If you don't, probably young kids for sure need to hear, right.
Biz
Oh, for sure.
Whitney
So much put into stats and the money and I get it and you understand, like, where they're coming from, but it's like, God, there's gonna be a lot of kids who have to become different type players. Yeah. Play for a long time.
Patrice Bergeron
You know what's funny too, I think, like, it's when, like around the years that, like 2011, in those years when we had those guys that, you know, as I said, the, the, the glue guys and the guys, you know, that, that really bought in the things that we would say to the young guys was, you know, if you win, no matter what your role is, you're buying yourself like another four or five years of your career legit. Instead of like, thinking about the individual stuff and like, maybe scoring 20 and then I'll get a better contract, think about, like, winning with your team and doing whatever it takes to. And I think, like, the Panthers is a good example. Right. Got A.J. greer and these guys are like, like, came in and, you know, played tremendous minutes at the end and like, really were effective.
Biz
Now there's headlines. AJ Greer is going to free agency. Like, like when. If he hasn't played for the Florida McCarron. Yeah. Like, just like. Yeah. Any type of success, you. Yeah.
Whitney
Like almost all of a sudden the rest of your career, it's like, hey, we're bringing in a cup champ at the deadline.
Patrice Bergeron
Exactly. And a gamer and a guy that's successful winning the chips. You know, the, the game's on the line.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
Were you a big video guy? Would you watch video after games to, like, study more and more or were you just going back on the ice and applying the.
Patrice Bergeron
I was watching my shifts by the end of my career, like, a little bit more. I, I, I, I felt like I was a Pretty instinctual guy. Like, I was trying to, like, I. I knew if I had a good game or a bad game, there's games I didn't want to watch. But, like, I think for the details and, you know, like, there's. There's things that I, you know, Face Offs was really something. I was using a lot. The video. But yeah, for. For, like, I couldn't stand the iPads on the bench. Like, for me, I feel like takes away my. My instinct and. And like, listen, like, I was. I was on the ice. This is how I saw it. Like, even if you show me, like, from, like, yes.
Whitney
Full motion.
Biz
And you're. And you're. And you're. Now you're like, you're. You're in your own head about the last shift as opposed to letting it go.
Whitney
Yeah. Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
I think like, this. Well, this was open maybe, but it's hockey. Like, it's not like football where you have to run your routes. Like in hockey, like, the next shift is not gonna be the same. The positioning is gonna be different. The guys won't be in the same area. Like, so, like, you have to read and react and, like, use your instinct for the most part. So I get, you know, the. The video and, like, the. The iPad and, you know, it could be helpful once in a while, but to me, it's like, to a bare minimum, Like, I mean, I don't want to bash anyone that does it. It's more for myself. It didn't work.
Whitney
I guess I kind of wish we started with 13 and 19, finished with 11, but, like, obviously 20, 19.
Biz
Here's your sandwich.
Whitney
Yeah. There was so much that went into that, though. I mean, like, you.
Biz
You.
Whitney
You wrote St. Louis in game six, right? And you're going back home. Big Z's got the broken jaw, which must have fired you guys up so much. These playing with the A bubble on. He's got a broken jaw. Many. Like, a lot of Z talk right now, I guess, with Braden McNabb, kind of take us through that. That game and that year, I guess, because I remember it was the conference finals. I was on a golf trip.
Biz
Needed Marky.
Whitney
You swept Carolina, right? Yeah. Needed Rex coming back.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, we sure did.
Whitney
Yeah.
Biz
Brought out.
Patrice Bergeron
Should be on the road, I guess.
Whitney
Yeah, it should have been on the road. Don't.
Patrice Bergeron
No, I mean, first of all, the. The season was.
Ra
Was awesome.
Patrice Bergeron
It was a great year. It was a lot of fun. That run was. Was special. As you said, we. We swept Carolina and honestly, like, and, you know, we lost fair and Square. But like, to, to have that big break was maybe not the greatest thing for us. Yeah, we, we were, you know, on the road, you have the momentum going, then you have like 10 or 11 days and it was like, at the time it's like, it's nice because you can rest, but also it's, it's a long time in between, you know, series. But that being said, you know, when you're game seven, doesn't matter. You've played six before, so, so you should be, you should be ready. Obviously we, you know, like, we, we didn't just didn't play. We just didn't, you know, we had a good start of that game and,
Whitney
and great start of that game.
Patrice Bergeron
We should have scored a couple actually. Biddington stood on his head, made some great saves and I think that kind of took that first goal, obviously took the, the win out of us, and then we couldn't really recover and, and, and that was, that was it. So I mean, obviously if we score, you try to get it back. Sometimes you, you look back. I mean, I, I, I said that many times, I think, like, of course, like the championships and you know, the, the, the things that you're able to accomplish as a team, you know, that's what you look back and, and, and you appreciate. But the losses, they hurt. Like, it's, it's hard to, you know, to, to, to go through that. So it's, it's obviously still something that is a sensitive subject, but like, it's at the same time you have to be proud of what you've accomplished still as a team and to get all the way there and like, hurts more
Whitney
than like almost the winning.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Y, yeah.
Biz
Well, you try to think a little bit about legacy too. Imagine being able to bring the Boston Bruins to Stanley Cups. Like, yeah, you know, I may, I don't maybe not you because the person you are, but my mind would have wandered a little bit being like Crosby was able to get three of them, you know, like, yeah, yeah, those types of guys. And I put you in that category. So to get there and to be so close. But hey, at least you get to say you won one of the two. Game seven of the Stanley cup finals.
Yan
You've been. Legacy is just fine in Boston. Like, we love you. I would take a bullet for you need some. Someone killed. I'm your guy. Like, we, we would do anything.
Whitney
Brady too. So he's got two guys he could go to jail for. But when you shut it down and this is fast forward a couple years, like the hug with Marshawn. Like, I, I didn't think you were retiring. You knew, though, huh?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I knew.
Whitney
You could have kept. You weren't. You were still there.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I mean, I, I, I'm coming back next year anyways.
Keith
Vegas will take you.
Biz
Oh, yeah.
Whitney
No, but, like, mentally, yeah, I think
Patrice Bergeron
it was, Yeah, I was, I was at peace with, like, everything I, I did. The, the experiences I've, I've, I've had. I think my body was obviously, by the end, kind of getting, you know, I, I herniated my disc a couple years before my last year, and then I did it again before the playoffs. Like, there was a lot of signs of, like, overused, you know, like the hips and all that. And it's not that it wasn't like, I still could have played for sure, but, like, I also looked at my kids and I was like, I actually want to run with them. I always show. I want to, you know, grow up. Them to grow up and have me around and be able to actually play and, and, you know, and being able to be active.
Whitney
So that was part, what, eight and under that point?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
My, I think he was seven, my oldest, so. Yeah. And I think, yeah, I think mentally I was, I was there. I was, you know, I had a great career, so there was not one reason really why I did it. It was more.
Whitney
Had you told the guys before that game?
Patrice Bergeron
No.
Whitney
Okay.
Patrice Bergeron
I did not. I said I told the guys. I never, I guess I told Marshy. I told, like, a lot of guys I knew from even the start of the year. If we go back to the, to the summer. I called Cratch to, to come back because I want him to, because it was my. I told him.
Keith
Wow.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
And, and do you think that that, like, like, had influence on his decision to come back over.
Whitney
I don't know.
Keith
Back?
Patrice Bergeron
I hope so.
Keith
Patrice Bergeron calls you and says, you got to come back.
Whitney
Cuz I'm on the next flight.
Keith
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah.
Biz
So he was of the bagger.
Whitney
He played in check. I mean, he came back. He had 56 points, 70 games.
Patrice Bergeron
How wild is that? He played in the Czech League year before. And I spoke to him that summer. I said, hey, what are your thoughts? He said, I don't know. I, I might play one more year in the Czech League and, and call it. I was like, all right, I'm. I think this is my, this might be my last year. How about, like, it'd be one more sick. We do one more. Like, we go for one more we'll have a good team. Like, let's do one more run. And he was like, all right, let me talk. So I think he talked to his wife and like, he. He thought about it for a few days and then. Yeah, he said.
Whitney
And then you talked.
Ra
Wow.
Whitney
You said, don, I'm gonna call him. Like, is it right? Like, you had to kind of. Of.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. Well, at first. No, at first I was more like. So I. I told Sweens, I was like, I. I want to come back for one more. And then I was kind of asking, what's the situation with Cratch? He was like, well, I don't know. I haven't really spoken to him.
Whitney
And.
Patrice Bergeron
And yeah, that was kind of it. And then I was like, I'm just gonna call him and.
Biz
And then you guys win the President's trophy and have the. Was that the best regular season of all time?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I know. Yeah.
Keith
So there was no truth to you wanting to retire to presume your acting career? Cuz I heard you used to make. You make. He used to make these videos making fun of the guys. I heard they were incredible.
Biz
Stayed underground though, apparently.
Yan
Bruce Cassidy told me you're in a movie that's coming out.
Patrice Bergeron
I am in a movie. Yeah.
Ra
This is.
Keith
This is your.
Biz
You're going to be the new Cam Neely Seab Bass for the.
Patrice Bergeron
No, I mean, it's definitely not. I don't think it's going to be quite as, you know, something that you'll. You'll remember for the rest of your life. Like, cs. Like his line. I still remember his lines actually from that movie, but my line is a lot less remarkable. But yeah, I was in a movie called Driver's Ed and I think it's out now. It's on Amazon Prime. Thanks for the. Thanks, Mike.
Whitney
Checking that out.
Yan
Look, he knows my.
Biz
Oh, go ahead. Sorry.
Patrice Bergeron
No, I was going to say I'm at the beginning of the movie too, so. Which is kind of wild. So when I cringed when I saw myself, oh, my God, what am I doing there?
Keith
But what were these videos you made? Making fun of the guys.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah. So that was so. Rookie party. We used to. To make like, you know, we. We'd have the. As we all know, like the rookies try to make him. Have him make a skit or sing a song. And I was before one of the rookie parties, at some point, I was with Marshy at dinner. I was like, what if, like, us, we do something? Like, what if, like us, like the older guys, like, we come up with something and, like, just chirp like, the. The team. And he was like, oh, that'd be sick. Well, but then he was like, how we're gonna do that? I was like, let's just make a video, like, and just, like, keep it on the wraps. And then at a rookie party, like, just when the guys are a few cocktails deep, like, was just, like, put it on tv, like, at dinner. And then, like, like, it was a big hit that first year. Then we just carried that on after that.
Whitney
Would you give it to the most in those.
Patrice Bergeron
So we do everyone. So it was like everyone had. You had to, like, do something for everyone almost, basically. And it kind of like, it's almost got to be like, do something for biz. I'd be pretending I was biz, doing some of the, like, the rituals that he does or, like, like, okay, pick it up on some of, like, being observant of, like, the guys and observing what they do around the locker room and for guys to, like, understand what. Who I am and then kind of, like, make fun of that, basically.
Whitney
In a good way.
Patrice Bergeron
Like, in a fun.
Whitney
We kept you a while.
Yan
Can I just ask one more? So I asked Tom Brady the same question, and I gotta ask you, like, you've meant so much to me, the people of Boston, for. For 20 years now. Do you have any message to them?
Patrice Bergeron
Well, I mean, I think it's. I feel the same way. Like, I've. I've. I was welcomed here when I was 18 years old, and it was a pretty special, special run. I mean, there's a reason why I'm still here and living here with. With my family. You know, my kids were born here, and, you know, I call Boston home, and. And, you know, it's been. It's been special. I think it really means a lot. Every time I. I. I'm able to have a conversation with someone, someone is, you know, on the street, is, you know, kind of shakes my hand and talk about what hockey has meant to them and what the Bruins has met to them, and it's always very special. I mean, sometimes it's kind of surreal. You don't really think about it all that much, but then it's always very special. And, yeah, it's dear to my heart. I mean, obviously, like, the people have been. Been awesome for. For all my time here, and it's been, you know, welcoming me with open arms, even though I couldn't speak English back then. It was, you know, it was. It was. It was cool. It's been a great journey. It's been so much fun and. And that's why it's so special to be a Bruin.
Yan
And just a funny story for you. Quick. So my dad used to have season tickets down below, like right behind the net. And I think it had to be 2007, maybe 2008. He was like, we're gonna move to first row balcony, right behind where the Bruins sit. Right behind where the Bruins shoot twice.
Whitney
Great seat.
Yan
So you can learn Patrice Bergeron's game. So all me and my three brothers, every game, we'd sit there and he'd be like, I. So Patrice Bergeron watch this kid the
Whitney
whole time, Smoke before the game?
Yan
Oh, yeah. Didn't work great for me. But it's crazy that, like, you had such an impact on Boston, where my dad would move our season tickets up to the balcony just because it was better to watch, like, how you develop the place.
Ra
So.
Patrice Bergeron
Oh, that's what. Thank you, man. It means a lot. That's. That's awesome.
Whitney
You did mention my last. You mentioned face offs a lot. Is there anyone who owns you? Anyone you had a tough time with?
Ra
There's a.
Patrice Bergeron
There's a lot of guys. I think, like, Playcanic had a. A good number on the turtleneck. Yeah, Sid was. Sid was.
Biz
Could he cheat more? Could certain guys cheat a little?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, but I can't really talk about that because I feel like I was cheating as well. So.
Whitney
Yeah, there's not many guys when you win the cell.
Keith
Like, I won the Salky every year. No one gave me a hard time.
Patrice Bergeron
No, like, Sid was. Was. Was obviously like, we had some great battles. Jordan Stahl was really good.
Biz
Oh, he's a.
Patrice Bergeron
He's so big, Paul. Go, dad.
Keith
He was.
Whitney
Oh, yeah, he was.
Patrice Bergeron
He was getting solo. He was strong. He was a good player. Good on draws.
Keith
Yannick Perot, he was really good.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, well, my first couple years, I definitely. A lot of guys dusted.
Whitney
They were abusing you. 19.
Biz
Yeah, I got. I got one more. So you guys win the President's trophy. Marshaw, I. I'll never forget. I think he had a breakaway to end that series against Florida. And then fast forward a year later when you see that he gets traded there like at like 4 o', clock, an hour past the deadline. Were you in shock or were you aware, like, were you made aware that that was coming?
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, I was. I was in shock. I wasn't. I wasn't sure. Like, I was kind of like. I feel like Marsh has been, you know, drafted with the Bruins. It was pretty much a Staple for. For the Bees and a face of. Of. Of the franchise. So. But at the same time, like, you look back, it's like, you know, it gives him an extra cup. And I know, you know, the way that he played another six years. Six years.
Biz
Like, he was more shocked that he saw a six year deal come over the.
Whitney
Yeah.
Patrice Bergeron
I think he was still riding that. The. That high of winning when he saw Sign that six years is like, I can play six more.
Keith
Why not?
Whitney
Well, thank you so much.
Biz
And you have a documentary coming out as well.
Patrice Bergeron
Oh, really?
Biz
Is that true?
Patrice Bergeron
Do I. No. Oh, this is it. Oh. Oh.
Biz
Oh, sorry. It was. It said Patrice Doc. As in like, we had a document for questions. I thought maybe. I thought.
Keith
Yes.
Whitney
He also thought that Leon Dreis had. Was coming out with a cologne because he googled him. He's from Cologne, Germany. Thank you so much, Patrice. Unreal guy. Unreal player.
Biz
Jeff, have any questions for us?
Patrice Bergeron
I don't know if I do. I didn't came prepared. No, we can wait.
Biz
Hey, you live with Marty Lapointe. Does he have more scars on his face or do you. Is he the one that has the. Doesn't he have a crazy nose?
Patrice Bergeron
No, Marty's actually like. He's jacked and he's like.
Biz
He's.
Keith
He looks like Bird man like that.
Biz
Oh, okay. Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong guy then. Who was the guy who played in Philadelphia? He was a scrappy guy. Guy. Was it another lap point?
Whitney
Oh, you're thinking of.
Ra
You're.
Whitney
No, you're thinking of. Oh, my God. A little tough guy who ran around Philly. Oh, this is gonna drop. Point's got the white beard now. What the hell is his.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, yeah, actually, the. You remember the. Oh, you probably remember, but I was watching you. You know that game that. The prospect game. Yeah, like, you hit poot. You killed.
Biz
No, that was Dion, was it not? Oh, you went in.
Patrice Bergeron
Yeah, you're right. You're right. Yeah, that's right. So I remember that. That's. That's the one thing I do remember about you.
Biz
I was like, Pulio's agent came in the locker room after and was like, thank you so much for doing that. Yeah, that guy should never play hockey.
Keith
So you weren't playing in the game and he was.
Biz
But I was the MVP of the game. I was the MVP of the game. I scored on.
Keith
Because Don Cherry gave it out and
Patrice Bergeron
he liked the Rockham software.
Biz
No, I scored on Flurry.
Patrice Bergeron
No, but you made a name for yourself by doing that. Like you had a game.
Biz
I had a game brother.
Whitney
And he fought five months later as
Biz
an 18 year old defenseman. Six, seven. Let's keep talking about my, my almost. I was supposed to be Patrice Berger off. I was supposed to make them out of camp.
Whitney
Hell happened.
Biz
We wasted the good surprise on you, Patrice.
Whitney
Fifth round draft picking junior.
Biz
Oh, that's a wrap.
Whitney
Thank you very much.
Patrice Bergeron
Thank you guys. Thanks for having me.
Whitney
Guys, I'm going to be honest with you. I don't usually get excited about loyalty programs. They promised the big rewards and then it's like you actually have to eat 48 pizzas to get one free. They're always a little. They're always a little sketchy. So when I heard about the Shell Fuel rewards program, I was skeptical. Shocking. I know, me being skeptical. But here's the thing.
Yan
Thing.
Whitney
It's actually kind of annoyingly practical. You're already getting gas, you're already grabbing takeout. You're already buying snacks you definitely didn't need, but you absolutely deserve. And with Shell Fuel Rewards, you just get rewarded for all of that. And not in a fake points you'll never use type thing. It's actually saving on gas. And the part that got me, the saving stack, it's not like one sad little discount. It's you fill it up up, you eat, you shop and it all piles into real savings at the pump Joining takes less than three minutes in the Shell app and you'll save on every fill after that. Literally every single one. So if you want my wreck, join the Shell Fuel rewards program and save. All right, guys. DraftKings. If you're a DraftKings person and you're a slot fan, the wait is over. Whitney
Thank you, Patrice. I'll tell you, one thing he's not doing is hammering apple strudels the way Biz is right now.
Biz
Unbelievable.
Whitney
You know, I don't think that. That. That's a part of his diet.
Ra
Look at you. Just.
Biz
I would take eight zippers on the eye like Yoli for another one, and
Whitney
some just fell out of his mouth.
Keith
Scale of 1 to 10, biz 1 to 10.
Patrice Bergeron
How is it 8 zippers
Whitney
with food falling out of your mouth? Let's bring in Ra. Let's bring in our. Let's bring in our guy right now.
Ra
Hello, everybody. Welcome to ra's World, here on the Spitting Chicklets podcast. What's going on, boys? I absolutely hate this humidity. With dog. I would rather a foot of snow out my door than this humidity.
Whitney
That is the craziest thing I've ever heard. It's not even that hot either, Ra. But I'm talking. Even if it was worse than this snow, you'd rather have ac.
Ra
I do, but it's just like, I went outside a few minutes ago. The mugginess, just the stickiness. I know. I just. I much prefer the winter to the summer. I know I'm in the mid, but glad to see you boys did get to. To the Odyssey. I went for round two the other night myself. But when you were getting to talk about the crowd, I thought you were going to talk about the audience in the theater. Was there any things that would violate my. My, Zeus's laws in a movie theater?
Whitney
Yeah, I did, actually. I. I probably should have mentioned this. That. So we had, you know, the assigned seats, right? You buy your seats. We get in there, and like I said, we were a couple minutes late and we. So there's the two seats on the aisle, and then we're the next two in. We sit down, breeze right next to somebody. She's like, hey, like, are those empty? I'm like, yeah. I mean, like, we're late. So she just moved over one. So I took one of their seats, and she had one of ours. Well, sure as shit. About 10 minutes later, the people come in, buddy. I had the popcorn resting on my belly. I had. I had Lucy here. I had my phone over here. I had the penis palms on my knee, and I'm like, oh, sorry, sorry. I'm, like, grabbing all this stuff. And then she's. But she was wicked cool. She's like, no worries. I would have done the same thing. And I'm, like, getting over, like, some of the popcorn spills. I'm like, oh, oh. Like, buddy, I'm holding four things, two in each hand. And then I'm like, hey, sorry, is my phone there? I think I. I think you might be sitting on my phone. And she's like, no. And then she's checking, and, like, her husband's, like, looking over, and then I see my phone's in my hand. Dude. So I was a complete disaster. The people next to us and behind me were probably. If it was. If it was you already, you might have, like, attacked me. And I had my screen on. I had the.
Biz
Oh, full brightness and right in their
Ra
yap, because they're still selling out. I went to Coolidge Corner the other night, and, I mean, you know, there's very few, like, empty seats there on a Sunday night, which is just so real.
Whitney
There's no Monster Jam near there. Near Coolidge Corner.
Ra
Yeah. Definitely didn't have that. But, you know, I don't. I think you cannot go to a theater, not have it. At least one peck ahead. Head right behind us. Classic. You know, boomers. Like, there was a. There's an old Eddie Murphy stand up. And he talks about, like, people talking in the theater. Like, specifically, like, a woman asking her husband or her boyfriend, what's going on? This woman asked every five minutes, like, which. It's like, watch the movie. That's the plot. They're gonna tell you the whole time. And, like, you turn around, you stare at them. That. Because you don't want to say nothing again and draw attention and disturb other people. And it didn't stop the whole time. Like, one. One scene is like, dude, he's standing up in the movie. One of the characters practice. She's like, is he dead? And the guy's like, no. It's like, hey, what? Oh. It was infuriated. So we. Afterwards, I walked by him. He goes, buddy, you should do, like, the talk a lot during a movie, man. I just kept going.
Whitney
You gave it to the guy's wife? You gave it to the guy's wife?
Ra
I said, well, I said it to him because, like, you know, he's just
Whitney
answering the lady, like, yeah, we've all
Ra
been there, incessant the whole movie.
Biz
Like, I wanted you to call her a.
Ra
Every plot point. It's like that. That's why you watch the movie. It Explains itself. But before that, like, you know, like. And these aren't my rules. These are the theater rules. No talking. Shut your phone off. The typical rules. Dude in front of us picked his phone up. Now, eye level. Just literally. The studio credits are coming up at the beginning of the movie. He's got his. I'm like, oh, he's probably gonna shut off. He's holding it. There's a game there. It's like, not even the. The screen. And I was like, bro, can you put that phone down, please? And his buddy next to him. Him snaps his head back, gives me the Manson lamps. And I was like, what is that?
Whitney
What's the Manson lamps?
Ra
Like, that's a Sopranos line. He tries to give you the crazy eyes. You know, Tony Soprano says that to. Oh, God, the Richie April. He's like, don't you give me those Manson lips. Like, he tries to, you know, give you the bug eyes.
Biz
Yeah.
Ra
I was like, what? I goes. I asked him to put his phone down, and I just like, buddy, you're looking at me. And he turned around. That was it. They didn't pull them solo.
Biz
RA Is just on edge walking in there.
Whitney
You should actually be hired by theaters to be like, you should beater police.
Ra
You know what?
Keith
You're like, the bike lane police. Like, Avery is to the movie theater.
Ra
But it's just, you know, it's. It's annoying, and it's gotten worse. I mean, I stopped going to the movies for years because. Because I. I figured I'm gonna get shot one of these days because. And again, it's not my.
Biz
What a way to go, though.
Keith
R.
Whitney
Like, what happened? Like, he said the wrong thing to the wrong guy at. At a Creed 7.
Ra
Yeah.
Biz
40th anniversary was playing solitaire before the Odyssey and just playing a game on his phone.
Whitney
Or was he watching a game?
Ra
I don't know. It was. No, not like a sports game. Like, I don't even know what monster truck phone. But, like, he. He was just sort of holding it there. It wasn't like he was shouting off of the main screen. And he didn't turn around. His. His buddy did. And I said. I said, please. I. I just said, hey, bro, can you put your phone down, please? Like, you know, I didn't.
Biz
He's watching the. The Grave Digger on the live stream from Gillette.
Ra
Truckosaurus
Patrice Bergeron
not playing.
Biz
I. I also want to do something in the theater. As soon as the. The screen goes, hey, everybody, make sure your phones are off. They give you the whole deal, okay?
Ra
Hello.
Patrice Bergeron
Everybody shut Your phone away.
Ra
Yeah. Oh, yeah. That's. That's the thing. It's like they tell you that and it used to be common sense, but you know everybody. So with this and. And it's not picking on young kids. It's just entitled people in society again. The boomers are as bad as could anyway. I could start to see why the millennials can't stand the boomers. That's like the biggest rivalry on the Internet.
Biz
That should be the next Odyssey movie is like. Like Millennium Verse Boomers and like that whole. The war. The war of the millennials.
Ra
I also went the show Friday. I saw this one, the Invite with Olivia Wilde.
Biz
Heard it was awesome.
Ra
Unbelievable, funny. Funniest movie. Heard of it.
Keith
Biz.
Biz
It's getting rave reviews. Seth Rogen. It's just four of them. And I think all of it takes place in an apartment. Apartment, right?
Ra
Yeah. Seth Rogen and Olivia Wild. They're married, miserable couple. I guess that might be redundant, but they invite their upstairs neighbors now for dinner. Edward Norton and Penelope Cruz, who still looks phenomenal and basically, like, hilarity ensues. I wouldn't want to spoil anything. Legit. Piss your pants. Laughing. There was like two other people in the theater being afterwards. We were like. Was like. We were like. Well, kind of all laughed at the same. We were like, talking to total strange. I think it goes. Was that. Was that as funny as I thought that? Like, it was. There's a couple, like, serious moments in it, but Olivia Wild, man, I didn't know she was this funny. Her and Rogan, they were like, like, like Abbott and Costello. Like the. Like the. The banter, like, the repartee they had, like, with the comedic lines and the writing was awesome. Legit. Hilarious. Yeah. If you. If things aren't great with the old lady, I would maybe recommend going to see it with that with her. If you haven't.
Biz
Or you should, because Penelope Cruz and. And Edward Norton, like, aren't they telling them to, like, get into, like, group sex and I don't.
Ra
I. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. No, I. I don't know. I don't want to spoil any parts of the movie. That's why I left it vague. But they're a much more chill couple and they kind of, like just kind of get in this conversation. But legit. I don't know how much. How much it might have been improv because some of the lines that, like, Rogan come up comes up with but hilarious. Go see it. If you're looking for an actual. What's the name of it, it's called the invite.
Whitney
Any, any bad behavior people in that show?
Ra
No, that there was three of us in there because I, I went Friday on matinee over at the Garden so there's only three of us there. So fortunately I didn't have to brawl with two ladies in front in front of me. But highly recommend that moving along to. Well, sort of hockey related. Did you see this quote from the Vancouver mayor? I, I tweeted about it the other day. Oh my God.
Whitney
I saw this on the group chat.
Ra
This.
Whitney
I. I'm so happy you brought this up.
Ra
I. I couldn't believe it. Yeah, he, he was asked something interview. He says, as a fan, I want to see the Canucks have an exciting run and make it to the Stanley cup finals. His word, not my mind. And hopefully win in game seven in overtime. As the mayor of Vancouver, I do not want them to play a single game in the playoffs because the stress that it causes for safety. Like, what the fuck you talking about, bro? You're the mayor of a Canadian city with a team like even if you went game seven, that's like at least 12 games. You're going to have in your city millions and millions of dollars dumped in that people, you know, waitresses, bots. And there's so many people made money. And you're worried about safety, which obviously Vancouver has a riot here history. That's what your law enforcement professionals are for. You've already had a few of them. You, you know, call the monkeys. You could, you know, it's a huge deterrent.
Biz
We've had a horse get the Mounties downtown. I agree with you.
Keith
Put a couple speed bumps in.
Yan
Yeah, yeah.
Biz
That's how you stop them. That's how you slow them down. That's not going to create safety. It's going to create havoc.
Ra
When we've had, you know, the Red
Biz
Sox on there, there's not enough people at the hospitals to take, take up all those people coming in for apple strudels everywhere, just everywhere.
Ra
You put a couple like garrisons of cops out there and that's a huge deterrent. So I don't know, I just thought it was like a foolish thing for a male again of a Canadian NHL city to say safety. Dude, I, I don't know. The last riot actually was what, 15 years ago. Shut up, Bruins. The other one good news is is
Keith
they are not gonna make it to the stand.
Biz
They won't even come close.
Ra
Yeah, it'll be AI riot by the time they get back to the stand.
Biz
We Got a better chance of making it to the the finals of the Chiclets top.
Ra
Yeah but I was actually reading up on the history of riots in Vancouver. The last riot Prior to the 9411972 Little Band Called the Rolling Stones are in town. I guess there was a big riot. They got arrested arrested a bunch of people Also Tuma the 66th grade cup the night before the Saskatchewan Rough Riders were playing the Ottawa Rough Riders. There was a big Broadway.
Whitney
I love that they had the same names.
Keith
Two names.
Ra
And then the 63 Great Cup B.C. lions lost to Hamilton. There was another riot.
Keith
So yeah Vancouver's gonna the Hamilton Lions substantial.
Ra
Is there Hamilton?
Biz
No, they're the Tiger Cats. Another. Another lion. Another cat of the jungle.
Ra
And speaking of things that can't get out of their own way. The wnba man they. They. They just. They finally kind of got to this level. They've been scratching it in Clarence off for ages to get to and then the this the video. I don't know if you saw it with Paige Bacas like AKA Eminem and Angel Reese. They made a. A video of making a bet on the all star game and they have like legit cash paper and the league put shitted on their own Instagram. Now I don't know if they would joke it if it was fun but the way gambling is the way leagues are so sensitive about the fact that they made this video and they only tweeted it. I'll put it on Instagram whatever is absolutely bananas because the so much regulation. The last thing you won't even like joke about this day and age is having players in your league make making bets on stuff. So the wnba they you know they
Whitney
took it down or the players tweeted it.
Biz
The players did. Then they reposted it.
Ra
Yeah the WNBA posted their official account.
Patrice Bergeron
What's up is I. I haven't been following.
Biz
There's been other that's been going on too. Like there still seems like to be a Caitlyn Clark issue. Like why can't they figure it out? Dave's always talking about it and how like. Like they. I don't know. There seems to be like a still a Caitlyn Clark problem in a sense.
Whitney
I don't know how to treat the league seems. The league seems like it's like they get all. They get her coming in and. And all. You never see good headlines about the league. They got the other player. What is it? She's like talking like trans and and like women being only women could play women's Sports, then that's a story. And then other players are getting asked about that. It's like, I thought that it was all about like the league was getting better at basketball and the ratings were going up. Like, why is all you hear or
Biz
see any of the basketball.
Whitney
No, just all the bullshit.
Ra
All the. Yeah, but she, she did an interview with espn, you know, she, she gave her opinion and then it became this, this firestorm. And like, like what you said, like these, these gals are playing basketball and you got these, you know, reporters who do have agendas and they're asking like the same question over and over. It's like you don't see this in any other league. League, like just, just move on. You could disagree with her, but, you know, and then the owner of the Seattle team, there were two girls. Obviously someone hooked them up, but front row seats and you know, they had, you know, shirts supporting Sophie in some way. And the owner of Seattle went over and like accosted these like teenage girls, like, you know, talking shit to them. It's like crazy this. So they suspended the owner, whatever the hell that means. Like another fan spit on another fan. Like, it's just like I said, they, they. And I don't watch much wnba but sounds kind of highest level. Can you get the scores?
Keith
Buying the pattern.
Whitney
Can you get the scores on espn.com ra
Ra
yeah, but you can't get the NHL final scores on there. But they're not getting this discipline yet. Here's what they said. The wnba, we'll use this as an opportunity to re. Emphasize the players involved about wagering, joking about wager on games. They basically just like didn't take any rap for it. Like they're not going to get in trouble. And I'm not saying they should. But any other league, if two players did that, they. I mean, look what happened to Buddy in Austin, Ottawa. He didn't do anything illegal and lost what, half a season a couple years back. Oh, so I don't. I just. Like you said, it's crazy. This lead, they finally get somewhere and it kind of pissed it all away.
Biz
You talk about the Pinto parlay.
Whitney
Pinto parlay was a hilarious storyline and what made it great when we had him on. The kid just laughs at everything. I love Pinto parlay. I'm a big Pinto Parlay fan. That guy, he didn't give a.
Ra
Here was the quote. I was. Yeah, we recognized that the post, missed the mark, removed it shortly and addressed the matter. It's like, how did he. I don't know. Just to not have the will of all the foresight to know that that was going to be a shit show from the, from the jump, but either way. Did you guys see this post from our buddy strick out in St. Louis?
Whitney
No.
Ra
He said speaking to an NHL exec, he suggests if a player negotiates a no trade or no move clause in their contract, but then request to be traded prior to the expiration of the deal, the NTC should be voided and the team should be allowed to trade the player to any team in the league. That has to be the most boomer executive take from an NHL guy I've heard. Yeah.
Whitney
What's their punishment if you ask a guy to wave is no move because you, you want to trade them?
Ra
Exactly. Exactly. It's like, I mean, I know it's just like a mentality. I don't. I'm assuming it was probably a guy on the older side, but that's bananas, man. It's like a CBA you guys negotiated. It's all, it's all in the laws. And you know, if you don't like what a guy's doing, fine. But if they're doing it by the book, man, to say like, oh, you lose your rights and we could trade you anyway. Although biz, it would jazz the league up a little bit, I suppose. Right.
Biz
So I would just ask you guys, would you be okay seeing less like a rule in enforcing less mo. No move and, and, and no trade clauses?
Whitney
I would be okay. I would be okay. Or understand if at one point the league in the next CBA was like,
Biz
it's max, like limiting teams.
Whitney
It's max 3A team. I would get that.
Biz
Yeah.
Keith
That'll be what's next. Like the league will want that next and they'll probably get it. And how many? My guess would be like five per team you can get. But I don't know. I hope everybody gets one like from
Biz
the player side of it. Like, I get it like it's, it's ruthless, it's cutthroat. You don't want to get traded your families to deal with from a fan element, it's kind of like, oh, all these like sick trades are getting nicks because. Because of these, these, these no move clauses. And I think that. Did they not say like 60, how. What percentage of players now have them to some degree in their contracts? Wasn't it like over 50% of guys now really out of entry level contracts?
Whitney
50 of the league has no move clauses.
Biz
I don't.
Keith
I think even though, you know, like a Modified, no trade or a certain amount of team. Some type.
Biz
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think progressively it's gone up. Maybe it's a reach like 37 or something, but they have a. They had a chart of year over year, how much it's gone up. Maybe 50s and over over exaggeration. But obviously entry level players can't have them in their deals.
Yan
Kind of crazy here. So just across different leagues. The NFL, eight no move clauses. The NBA two no move clauses. The MLB 35 no move clauses. The NHL 245 no move clauses and
Keith
there's what, 700 players in the league.
Whitney
So yeah, they're, they're gunning for this and they just redid the CBA day so that it's going to be a while before it can get changed.
Ra
Hey wait, did you see the, the, the clip of that. The woman's golf a chank she played on her caddy. Did you, did you hear about that?
Whitney
I didn't love it. I didn't love it. That's a not going to lie, Keith. This, this, this woman, Charlie hall, who's. She's.
Keith
She's the one who rips.
Whitney
Yeah, rip starts. It's unbelievable. And she somehow faked char. She, she faked that her caddy won $100,000. 100,000 on the lottery.
Ra
Lottery. A fake scratch ticket. One of those like fake scratch tickets that you know, makes someone think they won. Sorry, go ahead.
Whitney
No, no, you brought it up. Imagine he's like you
Biz
first TE of the next major. She's got a exploding ball. Funny, ain't it? Cunt.
Whitney
She stepped on. She stepped on a speed bump.
Biz
Can't say that's 8C word I got. Guess.
Ra
Yeah, Keith, it's one of those you could probably buy at a joke shop. And you know, it's a, it's a fake ticket. People think they won. But it was her caddy. I mean she probably makes anywhere from what, 50 to 100 times more dough. It just, it just seemed like like punch it down. This guy was running around, he thought he won like a hundred thousand dollars and one thing he's doing to your boys, busting balls and haha that you know, that's whatever if you a prank amongst the fellas. But I don't know, I thought it was, I thought it was kind of a low, low blow. She said oh he didn't care and maybe he didn't man. But I don't know. I thought it was kind of cringe actually Butcher grasp posted it.
Keith
Maybe they do pranks on each other all the time. And that's just part of their relationship.
Whitney
Yeah, true.
Ra
Probably should have said that in the press conference.
Whitney
True. She instead was like, suck on that one. You didn't win.
Patrice Bergeron
And I makes a triple.
Whitney
He's looking for a ball in the
Patrice Bergeron
face, like three cups out to the left.
Ra
Her. Her punishment. She's got to like, ride, ride with me in the coffee. 18 holes.
Biz
Exploding cigarette. Next one.
Whitney
Her next round, all about the stars in the galaxy. Like at granite links with Eichel.
Ra
Oh, I can't wait for Vermont next week, man. Stargaze. And all night. I don't know if you saw. Oh, it's been all the Netflix decidah murders doctor here on Netflix.
Biz
This cigarette tastes funny. Yeah, I put crystal meth in it. Thanks for the scratch.
Whitney
Shoots 58.
Ra
This little Phoenix cyclophene. You have to see what this stuff
Keith
finishes around in an hour.
Ra
Yeah, I'm not usually a murder guy. Murder dark guy. Murder porn, as they call. There's so many of them and I don't know, it's depressing, but I did watch that the Idaho murders one, like I said here on Netflix. And I mean, I didn't really follow that case because it was such a gruesome thing when those four college kids got killed. But no, I watched it. I, you know, tweeted, basically, if you watch this and think this, like, loser incel didn't kill these people, you're brain dead and you should probably log off. So naturally, my guy Jeff Nadu do. He's like, oh, let's debate this. I was like, Like, I'm like, you really think he. He put, like, a laundry list of reasons he thought so. He literally just DM me on Twitter. He wants to do a spaces later to have a debate about the conviction of this, like, psychopath.
Keith
You're in debate mode right now, so I think you should do it.
Whitney
Yeah, I don't even want to watch that because that story's so horrific. It's too bad.
Yan
It's too sad. But I watched it and it's like sometimes, like, I just. Just. A documentary doesn't need to be made about everything. And this one, it was too soon. Like, I. I'm watching it and it's like these kids are still healing from this. The best friends, the kids who were next door. Like, there's so many things that are still, like, ongoing issues that these kids are clearly dealing with.
Patrice Bergeron
And I. I don't know.
Yan
I just don't think this documentary.
Biz
What year. What year were the murders?
Yan
Believe it was around 2021 or 2022.
Ra
Oh, yeah.
Keith
Wait, so did they not find the guy? Guy?
Whitney
No, they got him and they. They got him like a million different ways. He like, didn't he leave the sheath there from the knife? And then he had. They pinged his cell phone. They had all these ring cameras.
Yan
It's like he was taking classes, like studying serial killers. Like it. It's. He. He was like, this was months and months and months of planning. They have every step. I couldn't agreed more with your tweet, Ra. Like, if you don't think this idiot did it, you are a moron.
Whitney
Is that the premise of the documentary? To get you to maybe second. Second guess?
Ra
No, no, no.
Whitney
Okay, definitely.
Ra
They definitely early on because, you know, they want you to watch all three apps. Like, you know, sort of bring someone up that might have. But then they make it clear that this person had nothing to do with it. And then when they build the case with this guy, you just like, honestly, gee, like when his face come up on the screen, I was turning. I was turning my face away. He just like such. Such a creep. Like, he. He had like what they say he had like eight contacts in his phone. Like when they. When they went.
Yan
Yeah, I mean, just thinking about how he ran by the room of the one girl.
Ra
Yeah, brutal stuff. But I.
Biz
Well, eight contacts, like only eight numbers
Ra
and yeah, this whole phone. Well, I. Well, from one sad talk to another, I was gonna make another recommendation for. For Netflix, but it's called the bombing of Panam 103. It's. It's a doc series. It's a. It's not a documentary. It's like a six pot movie. Oh, so I know. I didn't know. All right, we'll get Dhaka. No, if you look up what was
Biz
the one that was a huge hit years ago know it was on Netflix.
Patrice Bergeron
Making the murder King. Is it making a murder with the Dassey.
Whitney
Brandon Dassey that just wanted to go back and watch WrestleMania?
Keith
Yeah. He's like, well, I'd be home to watch WrestleMania. And they're like, nah, dude, you're gonna be a clink.
Ra
WrestleMania 700.
Keith
That's what I call Rick Nash. Brandon Dassey.
Ra
Ah, yeah, that. That and that was during, I think covert too. Keith. Everybody was cooped up and. Yeah, but anyways, it's a. It's a good docu series about an incident happened. Incident. A terrorist attack that happened back in 1980. Biswood. A plane, it was blown out of the sky and it crashed over Lockerbie, Scotland like, it was. They think it was intended to blow up over the ocean so there'd be no evidence. But it blew up over Scotland because they had to take a different route. And so all of a sudden, this plane just falls out of the sky in the middle of Scotland and, you know, killed everyone on the plane, obviously, but it also killed, like, Scots on the ground. So it gets into the investigation. They probably could have maybe shaved a pot or two off, but it's. It was, you know, you have the Scottish people, it happened on the land. And then they're trying to get info from like CIA and the FBI and it's all a bunch of hot. Like, they don't want to share info. They don't want to tell this. It's like, dude, you. Let's try to figure out who did this. But the invest. The investigation, it's pretty impressive. Like what. What they. They were able to. How they were able to track down who did it. It was just like an awful event. But it's. It's a good take. Give that a watch one more sad thing, and then we'll get to something fun.
Biz
Oh, for.
Ra
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this. Last week, my classic recommendation was movie the Commitments. And the very next day, the guy, Glenn Hansen, who he was, he was in that movie. He died the next day in a motorcycle crash. He wasn't very known when the Commitments come out, but he was in the movie. Once that out 20 years ago, it won Oscar for best best song. It's like him and the other girl, like, he's like a buska. One of the dudes who, you know, plays a guitar on the street. The song, I think it's Fall, Falling Away or Falling Slowly. You've definitely heard. It's like the guy and the girl sing it like acoustic, quickly. But anyways, I. You know, I wanted to mention that he got killed in a motorcycle accident literally the day after the movie. So condolences to family, friends and everybody over the old side. The Ireland's been like a national morning right now. They're having a public wake and stuff, so. And finally, the classic recommendation. I got a fun one for you.
Whitney
Schindler's List.
Biz
Yeah.
Ra
Classic recommendation. This week, one of the funniest star spoof movies ever. A Walk Hard, the Dewey Clark Story.
Keith
Unbelievable.
Ra
It's.
Whitney
Heard of this.
Keith
You don't want none of this, Dewey.
Biz
Oh, it has to do with Johnny Cash, doesn't it?
Ra
Yeah, it's just. No, it's a spoof of All. All those, like, musical biopics. There was a run coming out every year. No, no, that's just the musical like, you know, Ray, Johnny Cash. Remember all these, like, music biopics?
Biz
Oh, I thought maybe Grease was in there too.
Ra
No, no. So they made this movie that spoofed all these. It's a. It. It's legit hilarious. It should get mentioned much more when you talk about the funniest movies ever. But John C. Riley, he plays the music star. And why I thought of it. He was actually in Charlestown the other night.
Yan
Keith.
Ra
He was. I don't know what he was doing in town. He was at the Tavern at the End of the World. I guess he got up and sang a couple songs with the band playing the other night. So anyways, yeah, walk hard.
Biz
What a talented guy.
Ra
Yeah, walk hard.
Whitney
John C. Riley.
Biz
Oh, he's just so. He's so hilarious. Play anything serious. He was in.
Ra
Some people say I look like answer solo.
Biz
He was in Gangs in New York, too.
Patrice Bergeron
Like, he just.
Biz
He's got a. He's got a pretty wide range.
Ra
He's. Yeah, he's very, very diverse. IMDb page, but yeah, boys, that's it. Gonna enjoy the Red Sox. They've been on a heater. What's it, 20, 28 and five in the last 33. So.
Keith
Yeah. How the Astros doing?
Whitney
I don't.
Ra
But it's literally. I've been wearing Astro for forever. I got about 17 hats. Don't worry. It's the. The right. There's a 47 on there right there. So don't worry about that. Keep the boys happy.
Whitney
When are you going up to Vermont?
Ra
Sunday. Going up Sunday.
Biz
Watch the speed bumps.
Ra
I'm. Yeah. Actually is a kind of a bumpy dirt road getting there, but, yeah, I'm very excited. I've been. Like I said, I've been. I've kind of had a. A boring bit of a summer, so I've been looking forward to this just to. I don't go out, chill by the lake for a couple weeks with the fam and. And, you know, few beers, some barbecue and whatever else else.
Whitney
Let's go. Love it. All right. I hope you have a blast. So we'll see you. So we're live from Vermont next week. Yeah, yeah.
Ra
How big? Bring the gear up. Absolutely.
Patrice Bergeron
Awesome.
Ra
Remember we. Remember we did the very first Spit and Chickens Dozen trivia game. Remember that one?
Biz
Oh, yeah. Oh, is that a few gummies? Ah, mushrooms or something?
Ra
Me. Yeah. It was me and Biz versus PFT and Brandon Walker and I, I hadn't met.
Biz
And we beat them.
Ra
We beat them.
Whitney
No, you won that one.
Biz
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. RA Was tripping off his balls and. Yeah, I somehow pulled the rabbit out of his ass.
Ra
I was enjoying my vacation biz. You. You were clutch too, man.
Patrice Bergeron
We.
Ra
We had great teammates, but they.
Patrice Bergeron
No way.
Ra
They thought they were going to lose to us two packer heads. But Chicklets versus pft Brandon Walker. Give it a. Give it a look. See if you want a few laughs. So.
Patrice Bergeron
All right, boys.
Biz
Great show, boys. Patrice Bergeron.
Whitney
Yeah. Thank you, Burger.
Keith
Gonna go watch Uplifting.
Whitney
Yeah. I'm gonna put on World War II documentary. Meeting all the kids who are.
Ra
Is he gonna die?
Whitney
Bye. All right, everyone, have a great week. We'll see you next week.
Patrice Bergeron
Love you all.
Keith
Peace.
