I was born and raised in Sardinia and I still live here. I'm the person behind both the Streetlist Sardinia blog and this podcast where I share practical tips to help you plan your trip and avoid the mistakes you see travelers make all the time. In this episode, we're answering a very simple question, one that can completely shape your trip. Should you fly into Cagliari, Olbia or Alghero? Because the truth is, most people get this wrong. Before we start, make sure to check the episode description. That's where you find the link to the flu blog post. On the blog, I break these down in detail with distances, routes and practical tips to help you plan your trip properly. Now let me give you this answer immediately. If you're staying in the south, fly into Cagliari. If you're staying in the Northeast, fly into Olbia. If you're staying in the Northwest, fly into Alghero. That's the correct choice in almost every case. And honestly, for most trips, that's all you need to know. But the problem is people don't do this. They choose based on flight price and that's where things go wrong. Now, this decision matters more than you think. Sardinia looks small on a map, especially for those of you that are coming from North America. But it's not. Driving from south to north is around 250km, easily three to four hours, sometimes longer, depending on the route and the traffic. And that's without stops traffic, winding roads. So if you land in the wrong place, you're losing time, spending more on fuel, starting your trip stressed. This is why your airport choice is not a detail, it's a core decision. Let's start with Cagliari. This is the main airport in the south, also the largest. It's located just a few kilometers from the city, seven kilometers from the city center. You should fly into Cagliari. If you're staying in Cagliari, Villa Simios, Costa Rey, Kia and Pula, and basically anywhere in South Sardina. Why it's a good choice? Well, it has the best connection year round, easy access to the city. It's just a quick train ride to the city center and works well even without a car. It's also the Most forgiving airport. My opinion, if you're unsure, choose Cagliari. It's the safest option for a first trip to Sardinia. Now let's talk about Olbia. This is the airport for the northeast. You should fly into Olbia if you're going to the Emerald coast, if you're going to San Teodoro, if you're going to Lamba, Delena Archipelago or the Galura region in general. This is a classic beach holiday area. Although we have gorgeous beaches in the south as well, so that's a bit debatable. What people don't realize is also that this is the most expensive part of Sardinia. The Emerald coast is one of the priciest destinations in Europe, with luxury resorts and very high accommodation costs. My opinion, fly into Obia only if you're staying in that area. Otherwise it just doesn't make any sense. Next, third option. Alghero. This is your airport for the northwest. You should fly into Alghero if you're staying in Alghero. Obviously Stintino, La Pelosa, Boza, or the northwest coast in general. Or also Oristano. Works well. Why people choose it often Cheaper flights, smaller airport is very easy to navigate, but it has a few limitations. First of all, fewer routes, more seasonal flights, and it's a bit less flexible than Cagliari. My opinion, Alghero is a great choice, but only if your trip is focused on that area. Now, the biggest mistake that people make, choosing the cheapest flight. That usually happens if you find a cheaper flight to Olbia, but you're staying near Cagliari, for example, now you have a three, four hour drive, full cost. A wasted day. That cheap flight is no longer cheap. What you should do instead. Here's the correct order. Decide where you're staying, then choose the closest airport. Only then compare flight prices. If you do it in reverse, your trip becomes more complicated. What if you're visiting multiple areas? If your itinerary includes different parts of Sardinia, you have two options. Fly in and out of the same airport, do a loop. And no, five days are not enough to do a loop around Sardinia or to choose different airports, arriving one and leave from the other. And this is often the better option. It avoids backtracking, it saves time. You can pick up your rental car in one airport, return it to the other. It's super, super easy. It's done by pretty much anyone. It works well if you have. Well, five days is still not enough, but if you have a week, it's a good option. Car rental and logistics no matter which airport you choose, you will likely need a car. All three airports have rental desk. They're easy to navigate, allow quick pickup, but prices go up quickly in the summer and availability drops. So book early. On the blog, I've linked the best options for car rental. That's where you can compare and book now. Final Decision Framework it's going to be very simple. If your trip is in the south, fly to Caliari. If your trip is in the northeast, fly to Olbia. If your trip is in the northwest, fly to Alghero. If you're unsure, choose Callieri. If you're visiting multiple areas, consider flying into one airport and out of the other. Now, choosing the right airport is one of the easiest ways to improve your trip. Get it right and you're facing less driving, less stress and a better experience. Get it wrong and that means wasted time, higher cost, more complicated itinerary. And most people only realize this after they land. Now, before we finish, don't forget to check the episode description. That's where you find link to my full blog post. On the blog I go into much more detail. That's where you'll find distances, routes, links to car rentals and accommodation. If you want help planning your itinerary and choosing the right airport for your trip, you can also book a one hour consultation with me. The link for that is in the episode description. In the next episode, we'll talk about being prepared for a hike in Sardinia, something that is really important if you're coming here for hikes.
